- 0:00Speaker 1: That's impossible let me tell you what i believe but
- 0:03Speaker 1: your weakness is not your technique don't think you are
- 0:10Speaker 1: no you are the impossible life podcast you're sitting on a.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Winning lottery an idea that is fully formed fully understood.
- 0:19Speaker 3: That sticks.
- 0:22Speaker 2: This is the impossible life podcast because Nick and I
- 0:26Speaker 2: are attempting to live impossible lives. What we know is
- 0:30Speaker 2: that nothing is impossible. So instead of using impossible as
- 0:34Speaker 2: an excuse to not try, we'll use the pursuit of
- 0:37Speaker 2: impossible as an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been
- 0:42Speaker 2: done before, that just means it's unexplored. If they tell
- 0:46Speaker 2: you it's too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Impossible is a default label used by uncourageous people unwilling
- 0:55Speaker 2: to take a risk.
- 0:56Speaker 3: The real truth is this.
- 0:58Speaker 2: The solution to any impossible task starts with this question.
- 1:03Speaker 2: If I had to, what would it take?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
- 1:12Speaker 1: your co-host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across at a
- 1:14Speaker 1: man whose daily supplement regimen includes vitamin C, creatine, and pain.
- 1:19Speaker 1: That's right, friends, the former Navy SEAL, Garrett Unklebach, a
- 1:25Speaker 1: man who knows that pain should be taken daily and
- 1:28Speaker 1: always followed by a meal. Is that the best way
- 1:30Speaker 1: to digest pain?
- 1:33Speaker 3: No, a little pain first thing in the morning is
- 1:35Speaker 3: a great.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Way to start the day.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Shout out to my man Truett Haynes for his It's
- 1:40Speaker 3: Just Pain t-shirt this morning. I think that's where Nick
- 1:43Speaker 3: got his inspiration.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It is 100% where I got my inspiration because it's 6.30
- 1:48Speaker 1: in the morning and Garrett showed up to our podcasting
- 1:50Speaker 1: call with a sleeveless shirt on that says it's only
- 1:53Speaker 1: pain with a smiley face, which is what you were
- 1:54Speaker 1: talking about there. So anyways.
- 1:57Speaker 3: It's just pain. Little pain. It's just pain. Don't let
- 2:02Speaker 3: pain be the guiding voice in your life. And that
- 2:04Speaker 3: is really what it's all about.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Exactly. All right. Well, gee, it's tools and tactics. So
- 2:09Speaker 1: we're just going to dive in. Today's episode, man, we're
- 2:13Speaker 1: really getting to the root of all sin, which sounds
- 2:15Speaker 1: like a big thing, but we're going to really simplify
- 2:17Speaker 1: this sin that's absolutely destroying your life. Because I think
- 2:20Speaker 1: when you can highlight this, it will unlock so much
- 2:24Speaker 1: of what distorts your view of the world, distorts your
- 2:27Speaker 1: view of God. Like really that's sin damages everything. your
- 2:31Speaker 1: relationship with God, and then it transfers and makes everything
- 2:34Speaker 1: harder for everything that you're put over. Like when Adam sinned,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I think he had no idea that all humanity for
- 2:41Speaker 1: the rest of time, not to mention the actual earth itself,
- 2:44Speaker 1: would fall under the consequences of what he'd done. And
- 2:48Speaker 1: it's because he didn't realize the authority that he'd been
- 2:49Speaker 1: given by God. And so that's a picture for all
- 2:52Speaker 1: of us. Every person listening to this has a measure
- 2:54Speaker 1: of rule. If you want to make your life harder,
- 2:56Speaker 1: keep sinning. And so we're going to make that very simple.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And gee, we have kids. And we, uh, one of
- 3:01Speaker 1: the great things about kids is you get to see, uh,
- 3:04Speaker 1: you get to see the development of a little human
- 3:06Speaker 1: and you get to pick out some of the roots
- 3:07Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, these are consistencies. Uh, so I'm
- 3:10Speaker 1: teaching my 13 year old this as well as my
- 3:12Speaker 1: seven year old this, and you've got even younger kids,
- 3:14Speaker 1: the joy of fighting over the same things.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Well, what's interesting in, in watching your kids, because I
- 3:21Speaker 3: feel like I, I examined myself in this examined other people,
- 3:26Speaker 3: but when God gives you a couple of mini me's,
- 3:29Speaker 3: you really get different level of examination. It's interesting when
- 3:33Speaker 3: you do it, when you examine and you've got to just,
- 3:35Speaker 3: just quick side note. I know we don't have a
- 3:37Speaker 3: lot of time for side notes on tools and tactics,
- 3:40Speaker 3: but I was just sharing this leadership anecdote with someone recently. Don't,
- 3:44Speaker 3: do not fail to be a great examiner of other people.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Don't do it in a judgmental way. Do it in
- 3:51Speaker 3: a way that you seek to learn. And the leadership
- 3:55Speaker 3: lesson I was teaching It's one of my favorite ones
- 3:59Speaker 3: where Henry Ford said, I tried to hire a pair
- 4:01Speaker 3: of hands, but instead I got the whole person. When
- 4:04Speaker 3: you want someone to just do something for you, you
- 4:07Speaker 3: actually miss the best part of them. Now, the complication
- 4:11Speaker 3: is that people are a lot more difficult to manage
- 4:14Speaker 3: than just a tool or a machine because they all
- 4:17Speaker 3: work different. And what this lends to is the understanding
- 4:21Speaker 3: that leadership is one of the most valuable skills in
- 4:24Speaker 3: the world. Leadership begins with learning how to lead yourself,
- 4:27Speaker 3: but then it expands into, it's hard enough just to
- 4:29Speaker 3: lead yourself, but then it expands into leading other people.
- 4:32Speaker 3: And the first thing you realize when you've led yourself
- 4:34Speaker 3: and you're learning to lead someone else is, man, they're
- 4:37Speaker 3: not exactly like me. And so what you've got to
- 4:39Speaker 3: do is learn how to examine people the same way.
- 4:42Speaker 3: People who, one of my friends, he's a really great
- 4:45Speaker 3: just engineer and machinist. And he's one of those guys
- 4:48Speaker 3: who from the time he was little, he picks stuff
- 4:51Speaker 3: apart and says, why does it work this way? Well,
- 4:53Speaker 3: learn how to do that with people and not in
- 4:54Speaker 3: a judgmental or mean or emotional way. Just examine them.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Why are you motivated this way? Why do these things
- 5:01Speaker 3: not motivate you? What brought you to those conclusions? And again,
- 5:05Speaker 3: do it from like a scientific and examining way, and
- 5:09Speaker 3: it'll teach you how to lead people. And so I
- 5:11Speaker 3: say all that to say we could talk more about that.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I was examining my children. And one of the things
- 5:16Speaker 3: that's so interesting is who taught you that? You know,
- 5:19Speaker 3: it's like because I've examined myself quite a bit. And
- 5:23Speaker 3: there's parts of me that it's natural that way. And
- 5:25Speaker 3: there's other things that I've learned. And it's interesting to
- 5:27Speaker 3: look at my kids and look at the positive and
- 5:30Speaker 3: negative things of the way that they are. It's like,
- 5:32Speaker 3: I didn't teach you that. You just are that way.
- 5:35Speaker 3: And one of the ways, so that's all a lead
- 5:38Speaker 3: in to say one of the ways that we all
- 5:39Speaker 3: are naturally, I didn't have to teach my kids to
- 5:42Speaker 3: be selfish. And one of the lessons that I'm teaching
- 5:45Speaker 3: little kids is, you know, because kids are really good
- 5:49Speaker 3: at telling you what they want and their demands. Okay.
- 5:52Speaker 3: And what I'm, helping them understand that you don't get
- 5:55Speaker 3: this as a kid. You're not aware of your selfishness.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And what I'm helping my, my little girls understand is
- 6:00Speaker 3: your joy cannot come at somebody else's expense. The only
- 6:05Speaker 3: thing that will make you happy cannot be something that
- 6:08Speaker 3: takes away another person's happiness. But when you're, when all
- 6:12Speaker 3: you see is yourself right now, it's as I, my,
- 6:15Speaker 3: my oldest grace, you know, she's starting to form logical
- 6:19Speaker 3: thoughts and she can understand like, Oh, okay. That makes sense.
- 6:23Speaker 3: That would be mean. But before we can even understand logic,
- 6:27Speaker 3: we begin with a view of life that's all about us.
- 6:31Speaker 3: It's this self-centeredness. What about me? What about what I want?
- 6:35Speaker 3: This is the sin that destroys us. And that's what
- 6:37Speaker 3: sin is. Sin is just selfishness. It's the root of
- 6:41Speaker 3: every single sin. And this is the shift that Satan
- 6:45Speaker 3: made in the Garden of Eden. When he's speaking to Eve,
- 6:50Speaker 3: he shifted the conversation. through just a little drop of selfishness,
- 6:55Speaker 3: shifted the conversation from what did God say into a
- 6:59Speaker 3: conversation of, well, what could this do for me? He
- 7:03Speaker 3: didn't try to say God's not all powerful, didn't try
- 7:06Speaker 3: to say God's evil. He says, well, if you ate
- 7:08Speaker 3: this fruit, what could it do for you? And so
- 7:11Speaker 3: he started making Eve think, well, I'm missing out. What
- 7:15Speaker 3: could I have if I did this? And so I
- 7:19Speaker 3: say that to say, That is like the internal voice
- 7:22Speaker 3: of sin that we all have to wrestle with is
- 7:25Speaker 3: just kind of this what about me thought process. And
- 7:28Speaker 3: where it becomes so dangerous is when the thought process,
- 7:32Speaker 3: and we're going to expand on this today. I'm going
- 7:33Speaker 3: to give you three core lies related to sin, different
- 7:37Speaker 3: ways this creeps in, because it's not just Satan coming
- 7:40Speaker 3: to you and saying, hey, what could this thing do
- 7:43Speaker 3: for you? Selfishness has a few different trap doors into
- 7:47Speaker 3: our life. But where it's so dangerous, I'm just setting
- 7:50Speaker 3: the foundation here for a second, where sin and the
- 7:52Speaker 3: selfishness thought is so dangerous is when that begins to
- 7:55Speaker 3: have a greater precedence over what God said, over what
- 8:01Speaker 3: is right in a situation, what's going to be the
- 8:03Speaker 3: best thing in a situation. Or what we've talked about
- 8:06Speaker 3: many times on the show is what's required of me?
- 8:09Speaker 3: What does love require? Like, what is the mission, right?
- 8:13Speaker 3: I put this one back on people in a corporate
- 8:15Speaker 3: sense sometimes of like, And what would it have been
- 8:17Speaker 3: like if we were on a mission and I go,
- 8:19Speaker 3: we're on a very important mission. I go, chief, I
- 8:21Speaker 3: got a headache. Can we turn around?
- 8:23Speaker 4: Right?
- 8:23Speaker 3: That sounds stupid on a SEAL team. And it should
- 8:26Speaker 3: feel that stupid in your life when you're that focused
- 8:29Speaker 3: on your mission and the things that you're focused on
- 8:32Speaker 3: in yourself. The reason it's stupid is because everyone clearly
- 8:36Speaker 3: understands the mission is so much more important than your headache.
- 8:39Speaker 3: But when we make selfish decisions, we're doing the thing
- 8:41Speaker 3: of like, but my head hurts really bad. Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I think it's, man, there's so much in what was
- 8:47Speaker 1: just said about simplifying sin down to just selfishness. There's
- 8:54Speaker 1: so many different laws on sin and all the ways
- 8:55Speaker 1: to atone and all these different complications. I mean, if
- 8:57Speaker 1: you read through the Torah, it's amazing actually how in-depth
- 9:03Speaker 1: God went. But when you simplify it like this, gee,
- 9:06Speaker 1: we live in a society that is constantly telling you
- 9:09Speaker 1: to get yours. It's like rewarding in athletics. Oh, this
- 9:12Speaker 1: guy held out and he got an even bigger contract.
- 9:14Speaker 1: For the common person, when you take a picture with
- 9:16Speaker 1: your friends, who do you look at first? If your
- 9:20Speaker 1: first thing is like, oh, you got to go look
- 9:22Speaker 1: and make sure you look good.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Boom.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Selfishness monster. The term selfie. I mean, I freaking hate
- 9:27Speaker 1: that term, G. It's always made my skin cringe. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: I will just say it's become a culture of like, hey,
- 9:34Speaker 1: let's have 5,000 pictures of me in front of something different.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Just learned about a general the other day. Just learned
- 9:41Speaker 3: about a general the other day who got fired for
- 9:43Speaker 3: a selfie. Well, we're in the no selfishness era of
- 9:49Speaker 3: the Pentagon.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Yeah, well, praise the Lord. But you know, G, the
- 9:53Speaker 1: great thing is this is not just our opinion. I
- 9:55Speaker 1: love the book of James because if you don't know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: the book of James is unlike any other book in
- 9:59Speaker 1: the New Testament. in that it's a verse-by-verse book. This
- 10:02Speaker 1: is just a little quick Bible understanding for you. It
- 10:05Speaker 1: is a modern, what would have been a modern-day Proverbs
- 10:08Speaker 1: back then. It's the New Testament version of Proverbs in
- 10:10Speaker 1: the sense that it's not telling a story. It's not
- 10:12Speaker 1: even book-by-book or paragraph-by-paragraph. It's phrase-by-phrase. And James is just
- 10:17Speaker 1: breaking down and giving wisdom. So James 1, 14 through
- 10:21Speaker 1: 15 literally says exactly this. It says, but each person,
- 10:24Speaker 1: so this is where sin is born, is tempted when
- 10:27Speaker 1: they are dragged away. Where from, G? By their own,
- 10:30Speaker 1: own evil desire and enticed. Then after desire has conceived,
- 10:35Speaker 1: it gives birth to sin. And sin, when it is
- 10:38Speaker 1: full grown, gives birth to death. It starts with such
- 10:41Speaker 1: a small thing because who doesn't want to feel good?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Who doesn't want to look good? Who doesn't want to
- 10:46Speaker 1: have abundance? And what we're not saying is like, oh,
- 10:50Speaker 1: you should completely not want any of those things and
- 10:52Speaker 1: treat yourself like a worm and put yourself away. We're
- 10:54Speaker 1: not saying that. But when those things are like the
- 10:57Speaker 1: main focus of your behavior, when you're walking into rooms
- 11:00Speaker 1: and the first thing you're thinking about is what are
- 11:01Speaker 1: people thinking of me or what I want out of
- 11:04Speaker 1: this place or the example I gave with pictures and stuff,
- 11:08Speaker 1: it is just constantly reinforced. And as a marketer, I
- 11:10Speaker 1: will say companies are very, very good at appealing to
- 11:14Speaker 1: your sense of selfishness to get you to buy whatever
- 11:17Speaker 1: it is that they're selling. And just be on guard
- 11:21Speaker 1: because selfishness, like if the beast that's going to grow
- 11:23Speaker 1: inside you is whatever's fed, Society is feeding your selfishness
- 11:27Speaker 1: all the time.
- 11:27Speaker 3: So you got to be aware. And James being the
- 11:30Speaker 3: book of wisdom, like Proverbs does, it repeats itself. It's
- 11:34Speaker 3: also similar. James chapter four.
- 11:37Speaker 1: No, I don't get it. Perfect.
- 11:38Speaker 3: But James chapter four is what is it that causes
- 11:43Speaker 3: the fights among you? Is it not the war within yourselves? Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 3: It's referring to the same thing. What's, what's the war
- 11:50Speaker 3: within ourselves? The war between, between the flesh and the spirit,
- 11:56Speaker 3: the war between what God has says and what I'm
- 11:59Speaker 3: personally seeking for myself. It is the journey, the heroic
- 12:05Speaker 3: battle of a journey of self-sacrifice and deciding to choose
- 12:10Speaker 3: a life that's not about you. And this is exactly
- 12:13Speaker 3: what God has called us to. Luke chapter nine, verse 23,
- 12:17Speaker 3: whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves And
- 12:23Speaker 3: take up their cross daily and follow me. And the
- 12:26Speaker 3: core of that is take up their cross daily and
- 12:29Speaker 3: follow me. That's what it's about. But where does that
- 12:31Speaker 3: journey start? What's the first thing? A lot of people
- 12:34Speaker 3: skip past that. That's a verse that most Christians have heard.
- 12:38Speaker 3: But if we did a multiple choice test of what's
- 12:42Speaker 3: Luke 9.23, a lot of people would get the, this
- 12:45Speaker 3: is how they get you with all the wrong answers
- 12:48Speaker 3: on the SAT. Here's the three-fourths correct answer. And I
- 12:52Speaker 3: can delete the must deny themselves part of this first.
- 12:55Speaker 3: People go, oh, that's Luke 9, 23, right? Because it's
- 12:59Speaker 3: so easy to read past this piece of scripture, right?
- 13:03Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that that is the most important
- 13:05Speaker 3: piece of the scripture, but it is an important part.
- 13:07Speaker 3: And we're hitting on this topic today of you've got
- 13:10Speaker 3: to not let pain be a guiding voice in your life.
- 13:13Speaker 3: You've got to not make your life about running from
- 13:15Speaker 3: pain or running towards pleasure. You've got to decide the
- 13:18Speaker 3: journey that you want to go on. And that journey
- 13:20Speaker 3: is going to require you I'm not saying that you
- 13:24Speaker 3: forget about yourself, but that you can't be number one.
- 13:27Speaker 3: God must be number one. And so what does he say?
- 13:29Speaker 3: Must deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow me.
- 13:34Speaker 3: So let's just take a coat. This is, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 3: this is all just set up for, this is tools
- 13:38Speaker 3: and tactics. We want to give you three specific lies. Okay.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I know those of you who listen to this show
- 13:43Speaker 3: all the time, I haven't told you anything new yet.
- 13:46Speaker 3: You know, selfishness is terrible and I'm constantly fighting against
- 13:49Speaker 3: my selfishness And it's good to get reminded. We get
- 13:51Speaker 3: these reminders. We need reminders. As one of those of
- 13:54Speaker 3: you who come to Mighty Men hear me say this
- 13:56Speaker 3: all the time, as one of my mentors said to me,
- 13:59Speaker 3: men only need to be told once. We need to
- 14:01Speaker 3: be reminded often. What we just talked about is a
- 14:04Speaker 3: reminder on selfishness. But I'm very much a strategy and
- 14:09Speaker 3: tactics person. And it's like if you don't know chess
- 14:12Speaker 3: and people start making moves, you're just like, oh, my gosh,
- 14:14Speaker 3: this is overwhelming. When you've studied chess and you understand
- 14:18Speaker 3: each move that people make, you're like, oh, that's this
- 14:20Speaker 3: setup or that's that setup. In martial arts, in MMA,
- 14:25Speaker 3: on the battlefield, in business, you understand. I negotiate with
- 14:29Speaker 3: people on a daily basis. As soon as people start
- 14:31Speaker 3: talking to me, I'm thinking about, okay, I see the
- 14:33Speaker 3: move that you're making. It's because it's not foreign to me.
- 14:35Speaker 3: I understand the tactics that you're deploying. What I want
- 14:38Speaker 3: to talk about really quick is just like, here's three
- 14:41Speaker 3: specific tactics that selfishness uses on us. And they come
- 14:47Speaker 3: from different places. It's all the same core, but it's
- 14:50Speaker 3: a different approach. Again, just like in martial arts or
- 14:53Speaker 3: something else, every move is a move to try to
- 14:56Speaker 3: defeat you, but there's different types of moves. All of
- 15:00Speaker 3: these are selfishness at their core, but here's some different
- 15:03Speaker 3: moves that try to defeat you. Number one, we've all
- 15:07Speaker 3: been guilty of this. And these are specific quotes of
- 15:11Speaker 3: a lie that selfishness produces. And here's number one, I
- 15:15Speaker 3: deserve this, right? We've all thought that. It's my turn, right?
- 15:21Speaker 3: I deserve this. I earned this. By the way, I
- 15:27Speaker 3: won't have a perfect antidote for all of these, but
- 15:29Speaker 3: my antidote for this one is I remind myself what
- 15:33Speaker 3: the Bible says I do deserve. The Bible says that
- 15:36Speaker 3: the wages of sin is death. So the next time
- 15:39Speaker 3: you start feeling entitled, like, but that's mine, but I
- 15:43Speaker 3: did this, and you said that. The next time you
- 15:46Speaker 3: start feeling that way, you have to quiet that voice.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Maybe you did what was asked of you and you
- 15:53Speaker 3: didn't get the proper compensation. The next time this voice
- 15:58Speaker 3: starts welling up in you, it's not that it might
- 16:00Speaker 3: not be logical to say, I deserve this, but this
- 16:03Speaker 3: is a voice that wants to destroy you. And remember
- 16:05Speaker 3: what the Bible says. What you deserve is death. The
- 16:08Speaker 3: Bible says the wages. It's Romans 8, I believe. I
- 16:13Speaker 3: don't know why I'm blanking on the reference.
- 16:14Speaker 1: But it's Romans.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Romans says the wages of sin is death. So the
- 16:20Speaker 3: next time you start thinking, I deserve this, this is mine,
- 16:22Speaker 3: I should be getting this. Remember that the only thing
- 16:25Speaker 3: that the Bible says that you deserve, there's a lot
- 16:27Speaker 3: of God's promises of his gifts to us, and God
- 16:30Speaker 3: doesn't fail on his promises. But the thing that you've earned,
- 16:34Speaker 3: sin has earned you death. So be careful before you
- 16:37Speaker 3: start reaching your hand and claiming, hey, this is mine,
- 16:40Speaker 3: I should have this. And as it relates to really
- 16:44Speaker 3: just entitlement in general. There's nothing wrong to say, hey,
- 16:48Speaker 3: here's proper compensation for these efforts. That's not what I'm saying.
- 16:53Speaker 3: I'm not saying that thought process is sinful, but this
- 16:56Speaker 3: is the issue. It's not about that it's illogical, but
- 17:00Speaker 3: the issue is when that becomes the highest authority. You
- 17:05Speaker 3: might think you deserve for a business to be successful.
- 17:08Speaker 3: You might think you deserve a happy marriage, or you
- 17:11Speaker 3: might think that you deserve respect from your wife. And
- 17:15Speaker 3: maybe you have done things that you should earn some
- 17:18Speaker 3: respect for your wife. Maybe you've planted those seeds, but
- 17:21Speaker 3: it is not up to you to demand that or
- 17:23Speaker 3: to force it, right? I'm not the creator of laws.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I get to live underneath these laws. But where I
- 17:29Speaker 3: get off base or where I lead myself off of
- 17:33Speaker 3: a cliff is when I start thinking this thought that
- 17:36Speaker 3: I deserve this is the most important thing.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Right?
- 17:40Speaker 3: This is, um, we do this with, with simple comforts
- 17:43Speaker 3: and simple pleasures, right? This is the, um, like when you,
- 17:48Speaker 3: when you get off of your diet, you think like,
- 17:50Speaker 3: oh man, like I've worked, worked out really hard today.
- 17:52Speaker 3: You know, I, I deserve some food. Well, it's not
- 17:56Speaker 3: irrational for you to say like, I worked out, so I,
- 17:59Speaker 3: maybe I deserve a treat. It doesn't change, um, what
- 18:03Speaker 3: the laws of thermodynamics are. If you engage in those
- 18:07Speaker 3: treats that, There's going to be a consequence that goes
- 18:10Speaker 3: with it. And is the, you know, getting a treat,
- 18:14Speaker 3: is that the mission that you're on? Or are you
- 18:16Speaker 3: on a mission for fitness? Are you on a mission
- 18:18Speaker 3: to have a healthy body? Are you on a mission
- 18:21Speaker 3: to live a life that serves the kingdom? Just understand,
- 18:25Speaker 3: it's not a sinful thought to say, man, I've worked
- 18:27Speaker 3: hard today. I deserve a little treat. But you cannot
- 18:31Speaker 3: let that voice become the authority. And it's why it's
- 18:34Speaker 3: something Nick notices in me. It's where he's realized I'm
- 18:38Speaker 3: not just a crazy person at this point. But one
- 18:41Speaker 3: of the things he first clicked onto in me is
- 18:44Speaker 3: there was stuff that it's like, why are you so
- 18:46Speaker 3: weird about that? The same way that some people have
- 18:49Speaker 3: a reaction to people who have a little bit of
- 18:55Speaker 3: the tism, they have a reaction to certain materials. They're like, oh,
- 19:00Speaker 3: that just makes me uncomfortable. Nick thought I was just weird.
- 19:03Speaker 3: It's like, why do you shut stuff down? you know,
- 19:05Speaker 3: so quickly. It's really the things that I would attack
- 19:09Speaker 3: very quickly with stuff that I realized, man, that's a
- 19:12Speaker 3: negative thought process. And it doesn't seem like a big thing,
- 19:17Speaker 3: but it'll become a big thing in my life if
- 19:19Speaker 3: I let it stay there. So number one is just this,
- 19:22Speaker 3: I deserve this mentality. Maybe you do, but you cannot
- 19:26Speaker 3: let it become the authority in your life.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:29Speaker 1: That thought process that you just shared about understanding the
- 19:31Speaker 1: small threats. I remember where it clicked for me, Derek.
- 19:34Speaker 1: You told me that Navy SEALs always escalate. If someone
- 19:37Speaker 1: throws a rock, you're going to shoot bullets. If someone
- 19:39Speaker 1: shoots bullets, you're going to drop a bomb. I was
- 19:43Speaker 1: coming at it from a very, well, that's not, why
- 19:45Speaker 1: do that? Then you said, look, someone may throw a
- 19:48Speaker 1: rock at me. I don't know what else they have
- 19:50Speaker 1: because I'm so used to like these movies where people
- 19:52Speaker 1: draw guns and they talk for five minutes so we
- 19:54Speaker 1: can see where everybody's at before you finally do something.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And that's obviously not how life works. And when I
- 19:59Speaker 1: realized that the reason you escalate is because you don't
- 20:01Speaker 1: know just how dangerous it could get. All the thought
- 20:04Speaker 1: process you just shared made sense. Like, oh, it's just
- 20:07Speaker 1: a little bit of porn. Well, the same lustful thoughts
- 20:09Speaker 1: that lead someone to look at porn or look at
- 20:11Speaker 1: that chick in the gym or check out that image
- 20:14Speaker 1: on Instagram grows and matures into, hey, let's have some
- 20:17Speaker 1: human trafficking. Let's sell people into prostitution. You might be like, whoa, no,
- 20:22Speaker 1: that's a big jump. Where do you think it starts?
- 20:25Speaker 3: It would be really good with the things that are
- 20:28Speaker 3: trying to destroy you. I'm not saying go all the
- 20:33Speaker 3: way in this direction.
- 20:34Speaker 1: This is not an honor off.
- 20:36Speaker 3: This is more of a you know, maybe crank up
- 20:39Speaker 3: the dial on this one a little bit, but you
- 20:41Speaker 3: should crank up the dial a little bit on shoot first,
- 20:45Speaker 3: ask questions later, crank that dial up a little bit
- 20:48Speaker 3: on the things that are trying to destroy you. Instead
- 20:50Speaker 3: of when you see something that you shouldn't be looking
- 20:52Speaker 3: at on Instagram, you say like, oh, well, it's okay.
- 20:54Speaker 3: This isn't like, this isn't, you know, porn by definition.
- 20:58Speaker 3: This is just like lust for material, you know? So
- 21:01Speaker 3: it's not porn by definition. I can just keep looking
- 21:03Speaker 3: at it. Let me scroll further. Instead, that's the worst
- 21:06Speaker 3: reaction you can have. Instead, why don't you throw your
- 21:08Speaker 3: phone across the room? Right. That's a little bit more
- 21:11Speaker 3: of the shoot first, ask questions later. There you go.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Shout out to T-Mobile. We're not sponsored by them, but
- 21:16Speaker 1: they will replace that phone. Anyways. All right. So number
- 21:18Speaker 1: one was I deserve this, G. What's number two?
- 21:22Speaker 3: Number two, man, this one's dangerous. So number one was,
- 21:24Speaker 3: you know, I deserve this with selfishness that comes from entitlement.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Number two is, this is where these, I'm trying to
- 21:31Speaker 3: show these trap doors where selfishness comes from different angles.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Number two is, it won't hurt anyone. And this is
- 21:37Speaker 3: a selfishness that comes from autonomy. One of the biggest
- 21:41Speaker 3: lessons of maturity is understanding that your choices affect more
- 21:46Speaker 3: than just you. It's not just about you, but so
- 21:49Speaker 3: often we, we, we look at self and well, it's like,
- 21:52Speaker 3: it's okay. You know, like I know we were just
- 21:54Speaker 3: talking about porn in the first one, but this is,
- 21:57Speaker 3: this is the trap. I think that gets people on
- 22:00Speaker 3: porn as well. Like, Oh, it's, it's not hurting anybody.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Or when you tell a lie or you do certain things,
- 22:06Speaker 3: it's okay, right? Like God will forgive me and this
- 22:10Speaker 3: isn't going to hurt anybody. Galatians 6, God will not
- 22:16Speaker 3: be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Every choice
- 22:19Speaker 3: you make, everything you look at, everything that you eat,
- 22:22Speaker 3: everything that you do and say, you sow a seed, right?
- 22:25Speaker 3: So you cannot say that you're making decisions, you're making
- 22:30Speaker 3: choices in a vacuum. And you've got to see selfishness
- 22:35Speaker 3: as the enemy in your life that's trying to rob
- 22:39Speaker 3: you of salvation, that's trying to rob you of your destiny,
- 22:42Speaker 3: that's trying to rob you of the greatness that God's
- 22:46Speaker 3: called you to. One little lie at a time that
- 22:49Speaker 3: you think you're serving yourself, but actually you're building your
- 22:52Speaker 3: own prison. It won't hurt anyone is a disastrous lie
- 22:56Speaker 3: that makes you think, I can do these things with
- 23:00Speaker 3: no consequence when actually— You're doing, you're sowing a seed, right?
- 23:05Speaker 3: It's Satan is trying to whisper you like, see, look,
- 23:08Speaker 3: sow a seed. And it's the wrong type of seed. See,
- 23:10Speaker 3: sow a seed. Hey, nothing happened. Do it again. Do
- 23:13Speaker 3: it again. And that's where people sow calamity in their life.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And then a year later, years later, they wonder why
- 23:20Speaker 3: they live in a jungle of weeds. And it's because
- 23:22Speaker 3: they've been sowing seeds for a long time that have
- 23:25Speaker 3: a delayed harvest. And that is how it is most
- 23:28Speaker 3: of the time in our life. So do not fall
- 23:30Speaker 3: trap to this lie. of it doesn't hurt anybody. All
- 23:34Speaker 3: of these, as I'm sharing this today, all of these
- 23:36Speaker 3: are meant to be triggers. The next time you have
- 23:39Speaker 3: a selfish thought, you should be able to point it
- 23:42Speaker 3: back to one of these. Either I deserve this or
- 23:45Speaker 3: it won't hurt anyone. We'll go into the third one
- 23:46Speaker 3: in a second. You should be able to point back
- 23:48Speaker 3: to any of these and say, see, there it is.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Now I understand your tactics. I know what this is
- 23:54Speaker 3: and now I'm more aware. So let's go to the
- 23:56Speaker 3: last one really quick.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Real quick before we do, though, because you said on
- 23:59Speaker 1: point one, it was Romans 8. It was Romans 6.23
- 24:01Speaker 1: is the wages of sin is death. We always will
- 24:03Speaker 1: have that one person who will pop up in the comments.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And so I'm just going to go ahead and save
- 24:06Speaker 1: them the comment. And you can write something else.
- 24:09Speaker 3: All right.
- 24:09Speaker 1: What's number three, G?
- 24:11Speaker 3: They may comment before they may just pause.
- 24:16Speaker 1: We had somebody comment that we never use the name
- 24:18Speaker 1: of Jesus. And I just went back and said, listen
- 24:20Speaker 1: to the rest of the episode. So that was a
- 24:21Speaker 1: fun one. Anyways, I hope that person is still listening
- 24:24Speaker 1: because we use the name of Jesus all the time
- 24:25Speaker 1: and we will always use the name of Jesus. All right.
- 24:27Speaker 1: So number three. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Nothing positive to say to that. Okay. Number three, third
- 24:34Speaker 3: light here is I need this.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:39Speaker 3: And this may sound similar to I deserve this or
- 24:42Speaker 3: it won't hurt anyone, but I deserve this. This comes
- 24:44Speaker 3: from entitlement, thinking you're owed something. Okay. It won't hurt anyone.
- 24:49Speaker 3: This comes from autonomy. A false, the wrong type of freedom.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Not the freedom to do whatever, and not the freedom
- 24:57Speaker 3: to grow, to pursue what God's called you. It's the
- 25:00Speaker 3: freedom of thinking, I can just do whatever I want
- 25:02Speaker 3: with no consequences. That's dangerous. And then the third one,
- 25:06Speaker 3: I need this. This is selfishness that comes from fear, right?
- 25:11Speaker 3: This is the selfishness that wants to control. And again,
- 25:15Speaker 3: with all of these lies, there's a circumstance put in
- 25:18Speaker 3: front of you where you put that lie ahead of
- 25:22Speaker 3: God's word. And so when you get into a situation
- 25:24Speaker 3: where it's like, man, the outcome to this could be
- 25:27Speaker 3: really bad. What if I lose my job? What if
- 25:30Speaker 3: I lose my business? What if the person gets mad?
- 25:32Speaker 3: What if whatever is scary to you, then you will say, well,
- 25:38Speaker 3: that would be the worst thing that could happen. So
- 25:40Speaker 3: let me step over God's law. Let me step over
- 25:44Speaker 3: God's instruction. And I'm going to take control of this situation.
- 25:48Speaker 3: It's selfishness that comes from fear. Fear will rob you
- 25:52Speaker 3: of your destiny. And by the way, Jesus speaks to
- 25:56Speaker 3: this one specifically in Matthew 6. I've done multiple sermons
- 26:03Speaker 3: just on what Christ is talking about here. But he says,
- 26:07Speaker 3: why are you worrying about what you're supposed to eat,
- 26:10Speaker 3: what you will wear? He says, seek first the kingdom
- 26:15Speaker 3: of and it's righteousness. And then all these things will
- 26:18Speaker 3: be added unto you. It's not wrong to worry, to
- 26:21Speaker 3: think like, man, what am I going to eat? But
- 26:23Speaker 3: what Christ is saying is don't make that your first thought.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Your first thought must be, and that's where selfishness is
- 26:28Speaker 3: dangerous because sometimes they're rational or even logical thoughts of like, hey,
- 26:33Speaker 3: I'd like to not have my business to get destroyed.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I'd like to be able to eat tomorrow. None of
- 26:38Speaker 3: these are wrong thoughts, but when you make them God,
- 26:41Speaker 3: when you make them the number one, the primary thought
- 26:44Speaker 3: in your life, That's where selfishness destroys you.
