Latest / Opie & Carl / Carl Went Dark in Miami — No Phone, Speedos, and a Ferrari
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Square to start today. Well, first, we lost a good
- 0:04Speaker 1: friend of the show, Gary Rourke of Ubonn's Barbecue, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: we didn't lose him like Opie loses most of his friends.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Gary passed on. And when Greg called me to say
- 0:14Speaker 1: that he wanted to use this special end of summer
- 0:16Speaker 1: Labor Day podcast as a memorial to the King of Barbecue,
- 0:19Speaker 1: I knew it had to be an episode that includes
- 0:21Speaker 1: our favorite chef, the mad Cuban, Carl Luez. The problem
- 0:26Speaker 1: is where the fuck is Carl Now? The last I
- 0:29Speaker 1: had heard, he was hanging out with our Westwood One
- 0:31Speaker 1: podcast network suits, Tim Sabian and Robert Mathers. Yeah, that's
- 0:35Speaker 1: trouble to begin with. But Carl's a big boy, and
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm guessing he's got his face buried in vagina casserole
- 0:40Speaker 1: where he's busy putting his new restaurant together. Then I
- 0:44Speaker 1: checked my Instagram feed for like three days and not
- 0:47Speaker 1: one post from Karl. Now that's troubling because the chef
- 0:51Speaker 1: posts himself drinking or eating something that would put me
- 0:54Speaker 1: in rehab or a hospital like every ten minutes. In fact,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I may have lost five pounds. Not seeing his is
- 1:00Speaker 1: ruizing this past week, because when I do see his posts,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I gotta eat. So with that, Opie put on his
- 1:06Speaker 1: little Sherlock Holmes hat and began investigating things because, let's
- 1:10Speaker 1: face it, we can't pay tribute to Gary of Ubon's
- 1:13Speaker 1: without Carl. It just wouldn't be right. So Opie got
- 1:17Speaker 1: in touch with Carl's girl Friday, Gloria, and she gave
- 1:20Speaker 1: him a number that has an Arizona area code.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Like, what the fuck?
- 1:24Speaker 1: So now we check in with our host in his car,
- 1:27Speaker 1: podcasting as usual and giving that Arizona number a shot
- 1:31Speaker 1: on Opie Radio.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Hello, call.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Calebs, what's up? Call Lamb.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Chop is alive. I'm alive, bro, I went dark.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Huh, you haven't posted on social media in about four
- 2:00Speaker 4: five days. I texted you, you didn't never wrote me back.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Then I freaking got a hold of Gloria. All I
- 2:08Speaker 4: know is she said that you lost your phone in
- 2:10Speaker 4: New York before you flew out, whatever that means.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And then finally you started calling me.
- 2:15Speaker 4: From some weird number with an Arizona area code.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And I called that.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Number back and uh and here we are, here, we are.
- 2:25Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 2:26Speaker 3: Call? Let me tell you something. Brother? When I tell
- 2:29Speaker 3: you almost the grid. Almost the grid.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Oh, I don't care if you go off the grid.
- 2:34Speaker 2: But no one knew you were going off the grid.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Well, I didn't know I was going off the grid
- 2:38Speaker 3: in the beginning. What happened was I was in New
- 2:40Speaker 3: York and I was at a party and I may
- 2:44Speaker 3: have drank too much.
- 2:46Speaker 2: You think.
- 2:48Speaker 5: It is a Tuesday, Tuesday, and I left my phone
- 2:53Speaker 5: in an uber really and I don't know any of
- 2:58Speaker 5: my passwords or anything.
- 3:00Speaker 3: So then I called Gloria and I'm like, hey, I
- 3:03Speaker 3: have no phone. I'm flying to Orlando because Guy Fieri
- 3:07Speaker 3: is opening a new place called Chicken Guy. It's like
- 3:10Speaker 3: a fried chicken place, which was delicious, by the way,
- 3:14Speaker 3: so you should see me. I landed Orlando. I don't
- 3:17Speaker 3: I can't rotate anybody. I don't know anybody. Nobody knows me.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I have five grand in my fucking in my pocket,
- 3:27Speaker 3: a check card and cigarette and I roll up and
- 3:33Speaker 3: I roll up and I figure out, you know, where
- 3:36Speaker 3: this guy thing is, and they had security you couldn't
- 3:40Speaker 3: get anywhere, And all of a sudden, this's Wondero's like,
- 3:42Speaker 3: holy shit, it's the Cuban right, And I'm like, hey,
- 3:45Speaker 3: what's up? And when I hung out with a guy,
- 3:47Speaker 3: we did the thing, and I said, well, now that
- 3:50Speaker 3: i'm here, I'm going to Miami. I got no phone,
- 3:54Speaker 3: I got nothing. I'm Cuban. I'm gonna go where I'm safe.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So I rented a car and I drove from Orlando
- 4:01Speaker 3: to Miami and just started falling. And then just word
- 4:06Speaker 3: got out that I was here, like in Miami, like
- 4:10Speaker 3: just from people like fighting, right, And all of a sudden,
- 4:13Speaker 3: my buddy, Richard Hales calls me and he's a great
- 4:16Speaker 3: chefs out here. Richard Hales calls the restaurant because I'm
- 4:19Speaker 3: staying at the Confidence Hotel where his restaurant is.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and they bring.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Me a fucking cordless phone, like like nineteen eighty nine.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I was gonna say, like, it's Miami Vice.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yo, it was straight Miami life, right. And he brings
- 4:33Speaker 3: the phone and he's like, yeah, what are you doing
- 4:35Speaker 3: in my fucking hotel? And I'm like live it right right.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So he's like, yo, I touched you for three hours, bro.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I'm like, well, I've been at the bar for three hours.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Like I literally called the restaurant to find out why
- 4:49Speaker 3: you were bad at me. I said, I have the phone,
- 4:52Speaker 3: and then I hooked up with him. And then I'm
- 4:55Speaker 3: walking down the hallway and I see a bunch of
- 4:58Speaker 3: girls that I know from out of state, and now
- 5:00Speaker 3: I'm not leaving.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Well, good for you. Did you get a new phone?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I just got a new phone.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Right it's up in my room.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I don't even want to turn it on.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 4: No, I called this weird Arizona number because all of
- 5:13Speaker 4: a sudden, I'm getting phone calls from this weird Arizona number.
- 5:16Speaker 4: And then I get a text from you, going, yo, it's.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Me, call me back. What's the Arizona number about?
- 5:25Speaker 3: Man? I make friends, man making friends, just making friend
- 5:34Speaker 3: I'm making I make a lot of friends. Single call
- 5:36Speaker 3: and I and I and let me tell you something, Opie.
- 5:40Speaker 3: One of the most peaceful weekends without a phone. Yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 3: I'm in Miami's Flavor Day weekend. Everyone around me is
- 5:47Speaker 3: beautiful and I'm making sure of it. You got to
- 5:49Speaker 3: see my bar tab. It is embarrassing.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I could only imagine.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Man, it's embarrassing, embarrassing. I've been taking champagne for three days,
- 5:59Speaker 3: no text, no nothing, nothing, just nineteen eighty eight straight
- 6:04Speaker 3: party foot rate old school.
- 6:07Speaker 4: U easy, But were you jones into to post on
- 6:11Speaker 4: Instagram or Twitter or any of that shit because none
- 6:13Speaker 4: of us can let it out our phone, not at all?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Really, Oh god, bless.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Everything around me was so delicious, so people.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Right, oh my god, I mean.
- 6:24Speaker 3: There was not one ugly person around me.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and all the.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Girls like me because I have no phone, so I'm
- 6:30Speaker 3: paying attention to them, you know what I mean. So
- 6:32Speaker 3: like everybody's on their phone and I'm literally looking at
- 6:35Speaker 3: people's eyes, like all right, so tell me. Then when
- 6:38Speaker 3: did you find that puppy? Yeah?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 3: People became my social media. So next thing you know,
- 6:44Speaker 3: I got twenty caps around me and we're jamming, and
- 6:47Speaker 3: we are jammed.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Motherfucking That's that's pretty amazing. I don't think.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I don't think most people could go without their phone,
- 6:56Speaker 4: for god, I mean I.
- 6:58Speaker 6: Hang out with me every day, right yeah, yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I literally don't pick my handle, I don't pick my
- 7:03Speaker 3: head out of my phone, right, I wasn't living, man.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I gotta tell you, bro, there is something so beautiful
- 7:09Speaker 3: about just being disconnected, right, I gotta tell you it's unbelievable.
- 7:13Speaker 3: And I know because you do this. If anyone's gonna
- 7:15Speaker 3: agree with me. It's you because you do the same thing.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You just connect. When you're out, you're out. I'm out fishing.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'll talk to you later.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Well, I disconnected for the month of August, where I
- 7:23Speaker 4: went Trump free, right, No, that's the truth.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I went Trump free. Like people around me, they wanted
- 7:30Speaker 2: to talk about Trump, anti Trump, pro Trump, I said, nope,
- 7:34Speaker 2: this is a Trump free zone.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Man.
- 7:35Speaker 4: We're fishing and we're not talking about Trump for the
- 7:38Speaker 4: whole month of August. And then usually I uh, I
- 7:41Speaker 4: spend a lot of time in front of the TV.
- 7:42Speaker 4: I go MSNBC, CNN, Fox, and just keep rotating. And
- 7:46Speaker 4: all of a sudden, I'm like nope, and I started
- 7:49Speaker 4: watching documentaries and I just simply blew off the Trump shit.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Just what.
- 7:53Speaker 4: A month later, the world seems like it's it's fine,
- 7:57Speaker 4: and I don't know what fine.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Let me tell you something. The most, the most in
- 8:03Speaker 3: depth thing I've said in the last four days is,
- 8:08Speaker 3: baby girl, what color arms are those?
- 8:15Speaker 2: By the way, look, man, you're not fooling me.
- 8:18Speaker 4: To get you off your phone for four or five
- 8:20Speaker 4: straight days and not even have a phone, that means
- 8:23Speaker 4: Carly's got a crushy pooh, no.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I go you may rumors, that is all rumors.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Carly's got a crushy pooh, Carlly's got.
- 8:36Speaker 2: You know what?
- 8:37Speaker 3: Really, this is why, this is why I don't phone ship.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Somebody's got a high school crush? Are you gonna invite her?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Are you gonna ask her to the prompt?
- 8:50Speaker 3: I'm literally renting half next to you.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Sure, go for it, go for it.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I can't wait till we all go for fun, do me?
- 8:58Speaker 3: You and.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Carl?
- 9:03Speaker 3: Man?
- 9:03Speaker 2: For real, though, I'm starting to think, what the fuck
- 9:05Speaker 2: did I do?
- 9:06Speaker 4: Because you weren't getting back to me and the people,
- 9:09Speaker 4: and that people are calling me. Have you heard from Carl?
- 9:12Speaker 4: I'm like no, And then you know the classic shiit?
- 9:15Speaker 4: What's going on?
- 9:16Speaker 3: Man?
- 9:16Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 9:17Speaker 4: And then and then you know, I'm glad everything's good
- 9:20Speaker 4: And you just left your phone in New York City.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I left my phone and Uber and I have no
- 9:25Speaker 3: no access to my emails or anything or nothing. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 3: there's must be so much shit going on, right, and
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know what, I don't give a fuck, right. I
- 9:36Speaker 3: think everyone should unplugged at least the weekend and remember
- 9:39Speaker 3: what it is to talk to other fucking people. It
- 9:41Speaker 3: was just unbelievable. And I got around just fine. I mean,
- 9:44Speaker 3: I know a lot of people in Miami. Maybe it's
- 9:46Speaker 3: not fair, but I get I get alone just fine.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And I had the best conversations and I laughed. I mean,
- 9:52Speaker 3: for one, when I'm at a hotel bar at the lobby,
- 9:56Speaker 3: drunk as fuck, just blowing air kisses at whoever walks
- 9:59Speaker 3: through the door. Remember o'clock in the morning, I looked
- 10:04Speaker 3: like Diego Maridona at the World Cup, right of course,
- 10:10Speaker 3: same size, actually actual side, he's just shaman. And everyone
- 10:16Speaker 3: in the hotel they called me because don't given so
- 10:19Speaker 3: they called me the horse.
- 10:22Speaker 2: The horse.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Then that's like the biggest compliment. Like at Galas at
- 10:26Speaker 3: the bar, a smart and I'm d jaying. I mean,
- 10:31Speaker 3: I sent some girls go get her iPads and we
- 10:33Speaker 3: could play different music. Speak English. I don't know what.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Maybe she was speaking English, but I just didn't understand it.
- 10:40Speaker 3: But it was just incredible. Good for you must have said,
- 10:45Speaker 3: I must have said show me one titty at least
- 10:49Speaker 3: sixteen times tonight.
- 10:51Speaker 4: So if you say show me one titty, then you're
- 10:53Speaker 4: not part of the me too movement?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Right, If you say show me your tits. That's when
- 10:57Speaker 2: you're crossing the line.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Well, I mean this is so you make out of me.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I mean, you don't do a cold.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Right, right, I can't believe.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I don't know, man, I don't know if I'm getting
- 11:08Speaker 4: the full story because for you to unplug like this
- 11:10Speaker 4: for so many days, man, I don't.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Know if you're an old story. So you're implying I
- 11:16Speaker 3: just want to make straight. Okay, this is the most
- 11:19Speaker 3: unpleasant phone call. After four days, you're already taking in.
- 11:23Speaker 2: My perfect.
- 11:32Speaker 4: I think you're leaving out maybe just a little little
- 11:35Speaker 4: piece of the of the story. But that's okay, that's okay,
- 11:40Speaker 4: li It.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Nothing that matters, right, that's all that matters. Because I'll
- 11:44Speaker 2: tell you, I, uh.
- 11:45Speaker 3: You think it is? What do you tell me what
- 11:47Speaker 3: your version of the story? And I'll tell you, Yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 3: your name, that's fair.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:51Speaker 4: I'm calling a phone with it Arizona area code.
- 11:57Speaker 2: That's my that's my fucking clue. What is it? Is?
- 12:03Speaker 3: Not a clue? Just happened to be someone with a phone.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Next question, well.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I mean, if you're gonna shut down my first question,
- 12:08Speaker 4: then it makes it tough to go with a second question.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And I just hear a happy car, happy cross.
- 12:21Speaker 3: You don't like you don't like happy car.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Happy carl stinks. I mean you just took it.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Never made me single, bro, It's a nightmare out here.
- 12:33Speaker 3: This place is a complete paramoil. And I understand what
- 12:37Speaker 3: you're saying. You're implying it. I'm coming on some kind
- 12:40Speaker 3: of super date. Is that what you're implying?
- 12:42Speaker 2: I I think, uh, because I think.
- 12:47Speaker 4: You've been on a super date for let's see, you
- 12:50Speaker 4: haven't heard from you in about five days, So I
- 12:52Speaker 4: would say you're you've been on a super date for
- 12:54Speaker 4: five days and for you to rent a car in
- 12:57Speaker 4: Orlando to go to Miami cauzcuz a roocuz of roo.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Well, I don't want to disrespect your investigative skill.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Okay, because look, we all want to unplug, but we're
- 13:14Speaker 4: all addicted to our phones.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I'll tell you. I think it was two years ago.
- 13:17Speaker 4: I was fishing and my phone fell out of my sweatpants,
- 13:20Speaker 4: fell into the water, and then I watched a wave
- 13:23Speaker 4: just take it into the ocean.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I'm like, Ah, that's no big deal. The phone is
- 13:26Speaker 2: right there.
- 13:27Speaker 4: And long story short, three to four hours later, I
- 13:31Speaker 4: couldn't find my fucking phone. And I wasn't able to
- 13:34Speaker 4: get another phone for about two or three days.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Being unplugged for two or three days, I loved it,
- 13:40Speaker 4: but I was jonesing inside. And the first thing I
- 13:43Speaker 4: did when I got back to New York City was
- 13:45Speaker 4: I ran and got a brand new Samsung. Oh my god,
- 13:50Speaker 4: that's why I think there's something else in play here.
- 13:52Speaker 2: But that's that's none of my business.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Let's just say, I mean, make sure you have a
- 14:00Speaker 3: suit for my new wedding. I'm I'm, I'm having a
- 14:06Speaker 3: good time out. Everything's me. I finally finalized the deal
- 14:10Speaker 3: for the restaurant. We've got the concept down and all
- 14:13Speaker 3: and all bulls decide. That's why I'm in Miami, okay.
- 14:16Speaker 3: And you know what, I'll give you exclusives because I
- 14:19Speaker 3: love you, all right, and I can't tell you the
- 14:21Speaker 3: truth about other things.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I'll take you.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Tooth about them, all right. The restaurant is gonna be
- 14:27Speaker 3: opening in New York on fifteenth Streets, and it's gonna
- 14:30Speaker 3: be me and I'm back in the game, and the
- 14:32Speaker 3: place is gonna be called.
- 14:33Speaker 2: The Cuban Nice for real, The Cuban Yeah, it's the Cuban.
- 14:37Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I'm still working on it, back and forth, like even
- 14:41Speaker 3: a Cuban or a Guano or Guano.
- 14:44Speaker 2: No, I'm going I'm going back.
- 14:46Speaker 3: My mother's getting old, you know, my dad is really thick.
- 14:50Speaker 3: So I'm gonna build a restaurant basically of how I
- 14:55Speaker 3: grew up, right, So it's gonna be the bar. It's crazy.
- 14:59Speaker 3: There's gonna be a club downstairs, like the old copa cabana.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 15:03Speaker 3: So I'm gonna build a place for middle aged dudes
- 15:06Speaker 3: to scoop up chicks right.
- 15:08Speaker 4: On, because I'm the best sat And do you have
- 15:10Speaker 4: a place for Michelle Pfeifer?
- 15:16Speaker 6: Fly fly.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Carl's got his himself a Michelle Fighter somewhere in Miami.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Oh yeah, man, I like the gifts of like Alpacina
- 15:27Speaker 3: dancing behind Michelle Fighter, like right, definitely happening every twenty minutes.
- 15:36Speaker 4: You're gonna You're gonna come home with a wife and
- 15:38Speaker 4: she's gonna have a kid in her bellies if you
- 15:41Speaker 4: don't watch out.
- 15:42Speaker 3: The first of all, I'm Cuban, Yeah you do. We're
- 15:48Speaker 3: like bumblebees. But opey, i've been to a marriage or
- 15:51Speaker 3: I don't. I don't want kids because I've decided. You know,
- 15:56Speaker 3: then I'm just gonna bawl out as hard as I can.
- 15:58Speaker 3: But isn't it you want to be a star. You
- 16:00Speaker 3: want to be a shooting star or star. I want
- 16:02Speaker 3: to be a shooting star. I'm gonna go as hard
- 16:03Speaker 3: as I can't.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Well, that's why everyone was concerned, because we all know
- 16:07Speaker 4: you're a shooting star. And then when we don't hear
- 16:09Speaker 4: from you for four or five days, you're like, ah, fuck, hey, I'm.
- 16:14Speaker 3: One hundred percent. I'm one hundred percent good. I'm literally like, bro,
- 16:17Speaker 3: I'm doing like. I et a salad today. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:20Speaker 3: it was delicious. There's grilled chicken with grits.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Okay, look, if you're eating a salad with grilled chicken,
- 16:27Speaker 4: I'm gonna upgrade the crushy poo to you're you're in
- 16:33Speaker 4: full blow love.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Saying height of the valet. People they like parking, They
- 16:41Speaker 3: like parking, my rent, that asks Ferrari.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Oh Jesus Christ, Oh yeah, brom in Miami, you gotta
- 16:46Speaker 5: see me.
- 16:47Speaker 3: I'm wearing an Ulcamedia T shirt and wow, oh that's perfect.
- 16:50Speaker 2: That's that's you. So is it true? That most Cubans
- 16:52Speaker 2: conceive their children on a dance floor.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Absolutely a thousand percent correct, right, I was, I was.
- 17:00Speaker 3: We conceived that some shitty Spanish club and fastake New Jersey,
- 17:06Speaker 3: Like half of me is on some cubs the drill.
- 17:12Speaker 3: What you could tell, Like my grandfather used to say, like,
- 17:15Speaker 3: you were conceived during a fast song. Your brother was
- 17:19Speaker 3: conceived during his slow song. That's why. That's why most
- 17:22Speaker 3: of the stuff got in time.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Oh that's hilarious.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the difference between you and your very very
- 17:28Speaker 4: straight laced brother who doesn't really party or do anything.
- 17:33Speaker 4: He was conceived during a slow song. You were conceived
- 17:36Speaker 4: during what la bamba?
- 17:38Speaker 3: So I wasla bamba? During the plane accident?
- 17:42Speaker 4: Oh my god, just just a plane crash on the
- 17:45Speaker 4: dance floor, dude.
- 17:48Speaker 2: How do you deal with Miami though?
- 17:50Speaker 3: Man?
- 17:50Speaker 4: I I've been to Miami, I don't know, three or
- 17:53Speaker 4: four times over the years, and the people down there
- 17:56Speaker 4: are so fucking beautiful that it makes makes you instantly depressed.
- 18:01Speaker 3: I love beautiful people, Yeah, I love beautiful.
- 18:03Speaker 4: People, but you have to drop your own number down
- 18:05Speaker 4: a few digits when you're in Miami.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I mean me, like if you work.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I can fish a solid seven, yeah, all day, I
- 18:13Speaker 3: can tax seven in Miami. I'm the combat in three
- 18:17Speaker 3: or four point five is too much.
- 18:20Speaker 2: It just proves that God is very, very cruel.
- 18:23Speaker 6: He is.
- 18:24Speaker 3: But the thing is, in Miami you have to regulate, right,
- 18:26Speaker 3: You have to compensate for a lot of shit. Right,
- 18:28Speaker 3: So you need a giant fucking room that the girls
- 18:31Speaker 3: can see from the pool, and you need something red
- 18:34Speaker 3: with a horse on it. And then and then you'll
- 18:37Speaker 3: maybe if you play your cards right and you don't
- 18:39Speaker 3: slow your speech, you're gonna be hitting.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Six six and a half, all right, all right.
- 18:44Speaker 3: You know? So, yeah, there's rules down here, and if
- 18:47Speaker 3: you play by the rules, you're gonna win, right if
- 18:50Speaker 3: you if you show up you're looking like you're in Kentucky,
- 18:52Speaker 3: You're done, You're gone. I mean, I'm literally walking around
- 18:56Speaker 3: with jewelry.
- 18:58Speaker 4: If it sounds like I wasn't less something to you,
- 19:00Speaker 4: I wasn't because I.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Just swerved out of the way almost was in a
- 19:03Speaker 2: major accident.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I'm on my way to bay Ridge, Brooklyn, of all
- 19:07Speaker 4: places to talk to christ Uh, I'm gonna talk to
- 19:11Speaker 4: Christa Stefano and Jannis Poppas the Bay Ridge Boys. So
- 19:15Speaker 4: we're gonna hang around in Baybridge, Brooklyn and do some
- 19:19Speaker 4: of that podcasting.
- 19:20Speaker 2: But I was worried about you.
- 19:21Speaker 4: So I'm like, uh, I finally got this phone number
- 19:25Speaker 4: to call you and and uh, to make sure you're
- 19:27Speaker 4: all right.
- 19:27Speaker 2: My brother Chris, and I mean.
- 19:29Speaker 3: You're probably probably your first quality podcast.
- 19:37Speaker 2: It should be fun. I'm meeting Chris and his.
- 19:40Speaker 3: So fucking funny. I tell you. Christ is one of
- 19:43Speaker 3: my favorites. There's very few people as funny as Christmas
- 19:46Speaker 3: and and as far as roasting people, Christ is the
- 19:50Speaker 3: best one. When he locks in on you, You're fucked.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 3: He has the social wherewithal of a fucking time bomb.
- 19:58Speaker 4: He's he's he likes the Hispanic uh bruds.
- 20:04Speaker 3: We both we both drink from the same well.
- 20:06Speaker 2: He loves the Hispanic bruds.
- 20:08Speaker 3: If I saw this girl today, you could see the
- 20:10Speaker 3: fact of her from the front o.
- 20:13Speaker 2: My god, does that be Uh?
- 20:15Speaker 3: She was everything, she had everything everywhere, and I just
- 20:18Speaker 3: I just straight not even tried to open in English.
- 20:22Speaker 7: I'm like, right, right, hi, Poppy, I'm like I would
- 20:28Speaker 7: talk all right, Yes, I mean, I'm meeting him at
- 20:32Speaker 7: his empty apartment.
- 20:32Speaker 4: He just bought uh an apartment in Bay Ridge, and
- 20:35Speaker 4: then he wants to go get a haircut. So I
- 20:37Speaker 4: think it's set up for another wonderful Opie radio podcast.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Me. I'm a fan, and and I'm gonna.
- 20:44Speaker 4: You know, I'll i'll uh, I'll talk to a bunch
- 20:47Speaker 4: of people on the street, I'm sure, and then and
- 20:49Speaker 4: fuck that up.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So hopefully I don't get punch in the film.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I'll give you a little I'll give you a little uh,
- 20:54Speaker 3: I'll give you a little taste. Yeah, if you want
- 20:56Speaker 3: to keep your investigation, I'm gonna give you what we
- 20:58Speaker 3: call the lead. I'm gonna give yeah hotly.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Okay. The other night in New York, Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 3: I was showing with with my with my new squad.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I was swatted up. Yeah, Tim Stadion and Robert.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Ohless No and Sara.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Were it was. I was at full power in New
- 21:19Speaker 3: York City, at full bawling power. Wow, it was incredible.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I was giving out stakes like I give the stretch off.
- 21:29Speaker 3: You're gonna think it.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Was incredible, taking care of everybody. And then that led
- 21:33Speaker 4: to I said, waking up. I said, taking care of everybody,
- 21:37Speaker 4: And that led to you, uh, leaving your phone in
- 21:40Speaker 4: an uber and then jumping on a plane to go
- 21:43Speaker 4: to Orlando and then running a.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Car and driving to Miami, all without a phone. You're nuts.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Yeah, all of this happens. All of what you're saying
- 21:51Speaker 3: is true.
- 21:51Speaker 4: So Carl, this podcast became very different than what we
- 21:55Speaker 4: were gonna do. It's the end of summer, and uh,
- 21:58Speaker 4: I was gonna just do a few minutes with you.
- 22:00Speaker 4: That's why I've been trying to track you down. Because
- 22:02Speaker 4: Gary from ubonn H passed away, so we wanted to,
- 22:06Speaker 4: you know, do him right. So Joey put together like
- 22:09Speaker 4: twenty twenty five minutes off Gary just crushing at the
- 22:11Speaker 4: New York City Barbecue Fest.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I was lucky to meet him because of you.
- 22:15Speaker 4: You brought me into that whole world and the whole
- 22:17Speaker 4: Yubon family and the whole barbecue family.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Really, uh really made me feel at home.
- 22:24Speaker 4: And Gary just crushed it with the old school jokes
- 22:27Speaker 4: and the stories, and uh we had just the time
- 22:30Speaker 4: of our lives.
- 22:31Speaker 2: And then uh, you know.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Second, OPI I understand it. I can I get a
- 22:37Speaker 3: jib beam double And I'm so like in a glass. Yeah, no,
- 22:42Speaker 3: I understand them.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Go ahead, you are are you? Oh? My god.
- 22:50Speaker 4: You know what if Gary's listening to this and ab andy,
- 22:53Speaker 4: He's like, Yep, perfect, that's exactly That's exactly how you
- 22:56Speaker 4: should handle my sudden death.
- 22:58Speaker 2: My god. No, we loved Gary obviously.
- 23:03Speaker 4: From you bonds, and I really want to thank you
- 23:06Speaker 4: man for introducing me to him, because he was one
- 23:08Speaker 4: of those guys. I only knew him for a short time,
- 23:11Speaker 4: but he's one of those guys that I felt like
- 23:13Speaker 4: I knew him my entire life. And uh, it was
- 23:17Speaker 4: such a bummer when you called me about a week
- 23:19Speaker 4: ago and told me that Gary.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You know, I don't mean it.
- 23:23Speaker 3: It was I mean, let me tell you something. I
- 23:26Speaker 3: don't know how to say this. That's sucking to make
- 23:27Speaker 3: people upset. But I got a list of a million
- 23:30Speaker 3: people that I wish died instead of him.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah, he was.
- 23:34Speaker 3: He was very few times in life do you meet
- 23:37Speaker 3: the genuine article?
- 23:38Speaker 2: Right?
- 23:39Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you very much. Honey. Hold on, I'm saying
- 23:43Speaker 3: our room eleven oh one, the big one.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Note to self, don't let Carl speak at my funeral.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I literally Harrys the hater.
- 24:05Speaker 2: He gets a d D when he sees a bar.
- 24:08Speaker 3: So Gary is a genuine article, you know, what I mean.
- 24:12Speaker 3: And one thing that that actually triggered me to really
- 24:15Speaker 3: not give ask about what's going on with my following
- 24:18Speaker 3: and all that was him. If Gary could do one
- 24:21Speaker 3: more thing, he would he enjoy other people, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 3: And I think we forget that every day. Like when
- 24:28Speaker 3: when I met Gary, you know, I was a Spanish kid,
- 24:32Speaker 3: a Cuban kid, business to talk or you know, anything
- 24:37Speaker 3: about it or barbecue or anything like that, and he
- 24:39Speaker 3: opened his arms and treated me like one of the family,
- 24:42Speaker 3: no questions asked, you know. And and there's so few
- 24:46Speaker 3: people in my life and I'm and I'm definitely going
- 24:49Speaker 3: to point you out and say in your life that
- 24:51Speaker 3: aren't your friends without an angle, you know, like we
- 24:54Speaker 3: have a great friendship, you know, Like Gary and me,
- 24:58Speaker 3: we don't need each other for anything, you know what
- 25:00Speaker 3: I mean. I'm not calling you or you're not calling
- 25:03Speaker 3: when we do the podcast. We do it because we
- 25:05Speaker 3: want to see each other. And it's that simple, you know.
- 25:07Speaker 3: And when people like get away from Opie, it's like
- 25:10Speaker 3: someone telling you, like, get away from your best friend.
- 25:12Speaker 3: It doesn't make it doesn't make sense, I mean. And
- 25:15Speaker 3: the same thing with Gary, we talked about real stuff.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I mean, there's very few people that you could tell
- 25:20Speaker 3: anything through and the end of the conversation will end
- 25:23Speaker 3: up with a hug, and he'll just tell you you
- 25:25Speaker 3: ain't dead, right. And he touched me. He touched my
- 25:30Speaker 3: heart in a way that very few people, very few
- 25:34Speaker 3: people did you know. And if he did one thing,
- 25:37Speaker 3: he inspired me to live even harder, because you never
- 25:40Speaker 3: know when when it's going to be your day. And
- 25:43Speaker 3: nothing ever bothered him. When they would win barbecue competitions,
- 25:46Speaker 3: he was happy, and when he would lose barbecue competitions,
- 25:49Speaker 3: he would be happy the same level of happiness. Like
- 25:53Speaker 3: I'll telling you in Memphis in May last year we
- 25:55Speaker 3: were in Memphis, and two years ago in Memphis in May,
- 25:57Speaker 3: which is the biggest barbecue competition in matter right, it's
- 26:00Speaker 3: like the super Bowl of barba. And he's one Memphis
- 26:03Speaker 3: of May before. So when he didn't win the year
- 26:07Speaker 3: that I went, he threw the a party like he won,
- 26:11Speaker 3: and everybody showed up, like he didn't care. His ego
- 26:16Speaker 3: wasn't hurt in the least, he didn't care that it
- 26:19Speaker 3: came in fifth place or whatever. He threw the same
- 26:21Speaker 3: party as if he would have won. Yes, and That's
- 26:23Speaker 3: who Gary was. He was the most consistently honest and
- 26:27Speaker 3: loving human being I've ever met in my life. And
- 26:29Speaker 3: he didn't know me from Adam, Like he didn't you know,
- 26:32Speaker 3: It's not like, you know, he didn't want anything from
- 26:35Speaker 3: me nothing. He just wanted me to drink of bloody
- 26:36Speaker 3: mary and say them stupid funny stuff that you say. Right.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he was one of those guys that And like
- 26:46Speaker 4: I said, I only knew him very very.
- 26:49Speaker 2: A very short time. And I was really excited that
- 26:51Speaker 2: he was going to be part of the podcast. I
- 26:53Speaker 2: couldn't wait to do it again with him.
- 26:55Speaker 4: But he was so full of life he meets me,
- 26:57Speaker 4: he made me feel like one of the gang. And
- 27:00Speaker 4: uh he made sure I had a drink and food.
- 27:03Speaker 4: And he also knew that, uh you know, he could
- 27:06Speaker 4: have fun and tell some of his jokes and tell
- 27:08Speaker 4: some stories and and he.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Didn't care how it how it came out. He just knew.
- 27:12Speaker 2: He just knew. He just knew we were all gonna
- 27:16Speaker 2: sit around and just have a good old time. Man,
- 27:18Speaker 2: was he a monster in the barbecue world.
- 27:21Speaker 3: He was a monster. I mean here, he has more
- 27:25Speaker 3: trophies than you have. Pink flips in radio.
- 27:28Speaker 2: That's a lot of trophies.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Then he is, right, I heard from Craig, you know,
- 27:33Speaker 3: the barbecue ninja. Sure, he called me at eight thirty
- 27:37Speaker 3: and uh in and the way he I mean, the
- 27:41Speaker 3: way that they talk in the South, it's just like
- 27:43Speaker 3: it will hurt you right to the bone, you know
- 27:45Speaker 3: what I mean. Yeah, he calls me up and he's like, hey, Pop,
- 27:48Speaker 3: he's gone. Poppy's gone. And I'm like, sign up a bit, right,
- 27:54Speaker 3: and I just hang up the phone. Poppy's gone. And
- 27:58Speaker 3: then I remember I I I called Bill Derney and
- 28:02Speaker 3: you know, Bill Derney is one of the best barbecue
- 28:04Speaker 3: guys in the country and has known Gary. We called
- 28:07Speaker 3: him Poppy and his own Gary's whole life, I mean,
- 28:10Speaker 3: in his old professional life. And and it was so funny.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Secretly it's a tough Brooklyn guy, right, And uh I
- 28:18Speaker 3: get choked up just thinking about it. And I called
- 28:20Speaker 3: Italy and I'm like, Billy, you know, Poppy's gone, and
- 28:24Speaker 3: he just quietly he said, we lost the king today.
- 28:28Speaker 3: He lost the king and that was it.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Wow, that's wow, bro. I just got a bit teary
- 28:36Speaker 2: eyed me too.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I mean, every once in a while, one of these
- 28:40Speaker 4: really hurts, and uh, you realize only the good die young.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Uh my heart goes out to uh the barbecue princess.
- 28:49Speaker 2: She's got to be just out of her mind.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Uh Leslie. And Leslie is the glue of that family
- 28:54Speaker 3: and which he has to deal with and her and
- 28:56Speaker 3: her husband he you know, is a is a beautiful
- 29:00Speaker 3: man and a great doctor. And I mean, these are
- 29:04Speaker 3: real people. These are real people, and I'm glad that
- 29:08Speaker 3: I was able to. I mean, one of my last
- 29:11Speaker 3: posts was was a yazoo yubon's picture and you know,
- 29:16Speaker 3: maybe God in it this way. Maybe I lost my phone,
- 29:18Speaker 3: just like, get off my bullshit, right, and you know,
- 29:21Speaker 3: I mean, just let it sit for a second, let
- 29:23Speaker 3: it thinking what being a real person is, because let
- 29:26Speaker 3: me tell you something, every day we get farther and
- 29:28Speaker 3: farther from it. I'm breaking up just thinking about it. Yeah,
- 29:31Speaker 3: I mean, like, yeah, he was a good dude.
- 29:33Speaker 2: He was the king.
- 29:35Speaker 3: You know, the king waved down his crown that day,
- 29:37Speaker 3: and it was awful. It's awful for all of us.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Sometimes it's good to just kind of wake up and
- 29:42Speaker 4: reorganize your priorities and realize that dumb Twitter and that
- 29:46Speaker 4: dumb phone means nothing in the end, absolutely nothing. It's
- 29:51Speaker 4: fun to be fun and silly at times, but you know,
- 29:55Speaker 4: we shouldn't take that shit seriously. We should all get
- 29:57Speaker 4: our faces out of our goddamn phones and have real
- 30:00Speaker 4: human contact again.
- 30:03Speaker 3: He was unbelievable. Like when he died, I was listen,
- 30:07Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of people die right and tell
- 30:10Speaker 3: you the truth. Most of the time. I'm not that sad.
- 30:13Speaker 3: You know, I justified some way. He was old. He
- 30:15Speaker 3: was a coke ad. He didn't have a helmet on,
- 30:18Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I always figure out something
- 30:21Speaker 3: to justify it, right, so that I could move on
- 30:23Speaker 3: with my pettiness.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Sure right, Sure.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Got When someone like Gary died, everybody stops right because
- 30:31Speaker 3: he didn't have a negative thing to say about anybody.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Oh my god, man, No, I felt that immediately with
- 30:36Speaker 2: the guy. He was just I felt right, felt guine. No,
- 30:40Speaker 2: he was just full of he was just full of love.
- 30:43Speaker 4: There's not a lot of people you meet in this
- 30:44Speaker 4: world these days that are truly just full of love.
- 30:47Speaker 4: That a person that others want to gravitate towards soon
- 30:51Speaker 4: as they see him, Like even through the second day
- 30:54Speaker 4: of that barbecue fast when we were podcasting the whole time,
- 30:57Speaker 4: in the back of my head, I'm like, where's Gary.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Where's Gary. I can't see Garrett. And I knew he
- 31:02Speaker 2: would give us great shift.
- 31:03Speaker 4: For the podcast, but I also just wanted to hang
- 31:05Speaker 4: around that energy.
- 31:07Speaker 3: His energy was so pure. I'm jealous that we weren't closer.
- 31:11Speaker 3: How about that, I'm jealous. I'm jealous that I didn't
- 31:16Speaker 3: spend as much time as I could have with him
- 31:19Speaker 3: for this year. Fact that, you know, just to love
- 31:21Speaker 3: him more, just to love him more and if that's important.
- 31:24Speaker 3: He was just I mean, he taught me things about life.
- 31:29Speaker 3: I mean, you can learn about cooking, but he taught
- 31:32Speaker 3: me without ever teaching me anything, without telling me ever,
- 31:35Speaker 3: sit down, boy, this is what you do. He's one
- 31:37Speaker 3: of those people to teach you how to be better
- 31:39Speaker 3: just by existing.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 31:41Speaker 3: And I would look at him, and I don't know
- 31:45Speaker 3: how much longer I could talk about this, but I
- 31:47Speaker 3: look at him and I was like, Wow, that's you know,
- 31:50Speaker 3: on his worst day, he's better than me on my
- 31:53Speaker 3: best day.
- 31:55Speaker 2: You know, I get it.
- 31:56Speaker 3: That's what a man is. You know that, that's what
- 31:58Speaker 3: a man is, not going out wreckting a Ferrari and
- 32:02Speaker 3: actually that's pretty cool, but not doing all this flashy shit.
- 32:08Speaker 3: The real stuff is being able to love someone for
- 32:12Speaker 3: no other reason than just to love them, you know
- 32:15Speaker 3: what I mean? And as New Yorkers, I think that's
- 32:18Speaker 3: our number one thing that we missed, right, Like, we
- 32:21Speaker 3: just like me and you like, it's hard for us
- 32:24Speaker 3: to talk about shit like that. Most of the shit
- 32:27Speaker 3: we do is bullshit, right, you know, and this guy
- 32:30Speaker 3: had zero bullshit. You know. People would visit him in
- 32:34Speaker 3: Mississippi that only knew him for an hour, and he
- 32:36Speaker 3: would sit on the porch and talk to you for
- 32:38Speaker 3: a day, and you could sleep in my grandmother's room
- 32:42Speaker 3: and you could do whatever, you know what I mean.
- 32:43Speaker 3: It was incredible, you know when Bill Dirney said that,
- 32:46Speaker 3: when Bill Derny said, you know, we lost the king today,
- 32:50Speaker 3: I swear to god, it was like a lightning bolt,
- 32:52Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Because you're talking about one
- 32:54Speaker 3: of the toughest, baddest people in barbecue who never even
- 32:58Speaker 3: cracks a smile.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Maybe Billy, Yeah, No, I know, Billy's tough man. Billy
- 33:04Speaker 2: doesn't give it up, you know what I'm saying.
- 33:05Speaker 3: No, he doesn't give it up, and he just and
- 33:08Speaker 3: and just to see Billy and to hear a crackle
- 33:11Speaker 3: in Billy's voice. And I called Sam Jones, and Sam Jones,
- 33:16Speaker 3: you know, I mean, just to hear Sam Jones and
- 33:19Speaker 3: all these legends just completely take two knees. You know,
- 33:24Speaker 3: there was he was immediate and reverence. It was the
