- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we talk a lot on this show about the
- 0:02Speaker 1: issues around the Northern Territory with crime, and we know
- 0:06Speaker 1: that there is going to be a bit of a
- 0:07Speaker 1: meeting as I understand it, this evening, and yeah, joining
- 0:12Speaker 1: me in the studio right now to tell us a
- 0:13Speaker 1: little bit more about what is going on. It is
- 0:16Speaker 1: Shelley Lay from Zicicole, IgA Good Barding.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Shelley, Hi, Katie, how are you?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yeah? Really good, So great to have you in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: studio now. I know you've well, there's a bit of
- 0:25Speaker 1: a crime meeting that's going to be happening out in
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Palmerston area out in Zicicola, isn't there.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yes, we do have our community safety meeting on this
- 0:31Speaker 2: afternoon five to six pm. It's our first for the year.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We did a couple of these last year, but due
- 0:38Speaker 2: to the community's request, we've initiated that again this year.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So what exactly can people expect for the one this evening.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So we've got the anti police in attendance, people from
- 0:51Speaker 2: victims of crime, and we'll also have neighborhood watching tea
- 0:54Speaker 2: in attendance, and really our main focus there is to
- 0:58Speaker 2: get our community together, give them an option to be
- 1:01Speaker 2: able to talk to these organizations to voice their concerns
- 1:05Speaker 2: and you know what, really just to get to know
- 1:07Speaker 2: their neighbors and other people within their community, just to
- 1:11Speaker 2: make them feel safe, exchange telephone numbers, even just getting
- 1:15Speaker 2: back to basics.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I reckon, that's a good idea of knowing your
- 1:17Speaker 1: neighbors and being able to keep a bit of an
- 1:19Speaker 1: eye out for each other again, like have that community spiritus, you.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Know exactly, And look, we all know that we're on
- 1:25Speaker 2: Facebook and there's lots of different community sort of suburb
- 1:28Speaker 2: groups happening. But you could put there somebody walking down
- 1:31Speaker 2: your street and the people who are seeing that could
- 1:33Speaker 2: be five streets away. So if you could just send
- 1:35Speaker 2: them neighbor a text and say just hey, look out
- 1:37Speaker 2: for this and that. So we really just want to
- 1:40Speaker 2: get back to those basics and get people to know
- 1:42Speaker 2: each other.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Shelly, have you found like when last year when you
- 1:45Speaker 1: were having these meetings, did you have a lot of
- 1:46Speaker 1: people attending or was there what were the numbers?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Like, yeah, look, last year we actually sort of made
- 1:51Speaker 2: it more of a Zacholi meeting, but this time, due
- 1:55Speaker 2: to the requests, we've made it more for surrounding suburbs
- 1:58Speaker 2: and anybody who who lives in you know, around the
- 2:02Speaker 2: Colleague and the surrounding you know, Johnston and Gunn and
- 2:06Speaker 2: Bakewell and all of those suburbs. They're more than welcome
- 2:09Speaker 2: to get involved. Because the more people that get to
- 2:11Speaker 2: know each other we get this message across, I think,
- 2:15Speaker 2: the better outcome we're going to see.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah, right, so you've actually had to expand it a bit. Yeah,
- 2:21Speaker 1: that's a good effect, you know.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Look, and I'm all for getting to know more people myself,
- 2:24Speaker 2: you know, and getting to know those within our community.
- 2:27Speaker 2: And we've already had some people come into the shop
- 2:29Speaker 2: who are just quite upset due to some break ins
- 2:33Speaker 2: that they've experienced, and they just they want to have
- 2:36Speaker 2: Sometimes even talking about their experience with other people is
- 2:40Speaker 2: quite therapeutic and to know that they're not alone. Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And so it's a situation here as well where it's
- 2:46Speaker 1: about sort of meeting your neighbors, meeting those that are
- 2:48Speaker 1: around you, having that you know, community spirit, and keeping
- 2:51Speaker 1: an eye out for each other. But also hearing from
- 2:53Speaker 1: the police, hearing from victims of crime, and did you
- 2:55Speaker 1: say neighborhood watch as.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Well, neighborhood Watch is coming as well. Because of our
- 3:02Speaker 2: meetings that did start last year. They did ask me
- 3:04Speaker 2: to get on the board of Neighborhood Watch and T. Yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 2: so we did. Neighborhood Watch ANDT do some amazing things
- 3:11Speaker 2: and it's obviously something that we need to get across
- 3:14Speaker 2: to people before they are breaking occurs, and it's a
- 3:18Speaker 2: proactive approach. So Neighborhood Watch and T has different apps
- 3:23Speaker 2: in place to help people record their valuables. Should be
- 3:28Speaker 2: unthinkable happen and they get robbed, then they've already got
- 3:31Speaker 2: a list of their items there. So getting having Neighborhood
- 3:35Speaker 2: Watch and T there is a great sort of preventative
- 3:40Speaker 2: to talk about different strategies and tactics we can do
- 3:43Speaker 2: too to keep our home safe.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So, Shelley, did you join the board? Did you end
- 3:47Speaker 1: up join the board Neighborhood Watch. Yes, you want something done,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you ask a busy person, don't God, I know.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I know, but you know I'm passionate about helping people
- 3:58Speaker 2: and I couldn't say no. And if it meant that
- 4:01Speaker 2: I could bring information even back to my Zicicolean's I
- 4:05Speaker 2: was more than happy to do that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah, good on you. I like that you know, it's
- 4:08Speaker 1: not just about talking about these things, it's you know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: being part of it as well and trying to find
- 4:12Speaker 1: those solutions and help other people. Yet, definitely, Shelly, how
- 4:15Speaker 1: have things been going for you guys? Because we have
- 4:17Speaker 1: been talking a little bit this morning about some of
- 4:19Speaker 1: the threatening situations that people have been in bottle shops.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I've been sent some vision over recent days of well
- 4:27Speaker 1: out in Palmerston of some very threatening behavior people with
- 4:33Speaker 1: like large polls and things like that. How have things
- 4:35Speaker 1: been for you guys?
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, we haven't had anythink of that of late.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I must say, thank goodness. I heard that earlier on
- 4:47Speaker 2: the show as well. And to think that that is
- 4:49Speaker 2: happening is incredibly scary because people who are working in
- 4:53Speaker 2: the bottle shops and in shops are just normal people
- 4:57Speaker 2: that they don't have a weapon, they can't protect themselves.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, what's their motive? They just want the alcohol?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that really concerns me. And I haven't seen
- 5:08Speaker 2: that footage, but I can only imagine if they've got
- 5:10Speaker 2: a weapon.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, it's frightening Stelf. And this is the thing,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you know, you don't want, you don't want anybody to
- 5:17Speaker 1: be put in that kind of dangerous situation in any way,
- 5:20Speaker 1: shape or form.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It's not worth it, no, you know. And as much
- 5:24Speaker 2: as it upsets us and it's and it's a personal
- 5:27Speaker 2: attack when it's your shop and that people are stealing
- 5:30Speaker 2: from you, you can take it quite personally, but it's
- 5:34Speaker 2: never ever worth anyone's life or injury.
- 5:38Speaker 1: That's exactly right now, Shelley. Where can people? Where do
- 5:41Speaker 1: people need to go if they want to come along
- 5:43Speaker 1: to the community safety meeting this evening.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So we've got it just in front of the IgA
- 5:47Speaker 2: and Z a coolie five till six tonight. Everyone's welcome.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I'll have some nibolies there for anyone who's a bit
- 5:55Speaker 2: hungry on the way from home from work. And yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 2: just love to see anyone who's free and really just
- 6:02Speaker 2: get to know your neighbor.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, good stuff. I think it's a really good thing
- 6:05Speaker 1: to do. Get to know your neighbor, look after each other,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and also find out a little bit more about ways
- 6:09Speaker 1: that you can sort of protect yourself. I guess a
- 6:11Speaker 1: bit better.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, Yeah, Shelley.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Always lovely to catch up with you. Thanks so much
- 6:15Speaker 1: for your time this morning.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Thank you
