- 0:46Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:50I'm Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Stiegler, buddy.
- 0:55We own a Sunday night here. Got Sunday night football going
- 0:59on, and we had a little bit of a rough Friday night.
- 1:04Is that fair to say, little bit of a rough ride that is debts,
- 1:09fair to say it's more than fair to say ruff is a nice term to
- 1:15use for what happened Friday night.
- 1:19I've seen I've seen shit games that might have been.
- 1:24One of the top five were shit games.
- 1:26I've ever seen in, man, we've got a lot to unload tonight.
- 1:31Luckily, we had a full day to decompress, think about things
- 1:37and I tell you, for me, if my fantasy football team will not
- 1:44absolutely kicking ass today. Thank you, Justin Herbert.
- 1:48Hey, thank you for Dale, Patterson.
- 1:52Thank you between this on Friday night and these guys, where is
- 1:59it out here? San Francisco, just a few hours
- 2:02ago losing to cult fucking McCoy.
- 2:07Um, yeah, I'm going to be in a little rager here, but thank the
- 2:13fantasy football. I was bad but you well, my Colts
- 2:20took care of business on Thursday night, so I didn't have
- 2:23to worry too much about the NFL side of things.
- 2:28Unfortunately, we all saw at the Hokies ID on Friday night to
- 2:31follow it up. So, you know, we're still
- 2:33feeling the effects of that one. And we're going to go over quite
- 2:38a few things about that game tonight, fellas.
- 2:42It was, it was one of those that From the first drive.
- 2:47It just didn't feel right and it went downhill from there.
- 2:51Now, from the first drive, it didn't feel right at all.
- 2:56You know, we find out, you know, that your code is back with
- 3:01their missing some pieces. You know, we find out about Tray
- 3:06which we're going to get into about the press conference and
- 3:09what Pete Moore said today, because that's a hot-button
- 3:12fucking topic right now. But let's start with the One,
- 3:16good piece. He one.
- 3:18Good piece on the offensive side of the ball. somehow Rahim and
- 3:25Malachi, both averaged over five yards, a carry With I think the
- 3:31entire Boston College team in the Box.
- 3:34Yeah, I mean it was bad. I digitally but once Braxton
- 3:38went down, they knew we were running the ball and, you know,
- 3:41we were still able to more or less Keep the running game
- 3:46going, even if it was getting stifled, once we get into an
- 3:50area where, you know, they had to go up a little bit, we were
- 3:53still moving the ball, somewhat effectively on the running game.
- 3:55It just, it wasn't something that we could go to enough to
- 4:02get first downs consistently because of the loaded boxes.
- 4:05It's it's frustrating because if you had any semblance of a
- 4:13passing game to pair, with what they've been Doing, you know, we
- 4:17saw it especially against Georgia Tech which I know that
- 4:20still Georgia Tech, but if you can do anything with the passing
- 4:23game, you know, this running game can open up a little bit.
- 4:26But you know, without that threat I mean it was, it was
- 4:31tough going. It was very outgoing and you
- 4:34know, only what we only had 12 first downs in the entire game
- 4:3712. We had a couple drives where we
- 4:40had six and eight plays and we've got 18 and 24 yards, That
- 4:45is pitiful and I tell you total passing yard was 73.
- 4:52But you not tell me Brian. Was there?
- 4:54Like the pit of despair of? We're not waiting another.
- 4:58We might not be do we might not be view?
- 5:02Yeah I've officially hit that when I when I saw what they were
- 5:06doing and I saw what we were unable to do and I mean, I know
- 5:12this is Boston College, they have a good Front six.
- 5:17Good overall defense. Yeah.
- 5:20But they're not Elite by any stretch of the imagination.
- 5:23Solid, there's thought, you know, Miami's probably more
- 5:28athletic. Probably less sound.
- 5:32You know, we're still going to see two pretty bad defense has
- 5:36coming up with Duke and especially with UVA it to close
- 5:39it out. But if we can't move the ball
- 5:43effectively, we're going to struggle in all three of these
- 5:46contests. And it was evident especially
- 5:51once Braxton went down, but it was evident from the jump, like
- 5:53we didn't look like without tray.
- 5:55We didn't look like we had any anything that was a threat to
- 5:59them in the passing game. Yeah.
- 6:01And that That feeling of Despair.
- 6:03I'm sure it was worth every hokey who's watching a night or
- 6:05listening over the next few days here.
- 6:09Three passing yards. And it literally took almost to
- 6:13the end of the first half to get a pass complete in those three,
- 6:16passing yards. Yes, 33.
- 6:20And what, what's, what's the old Bob?
- 6:22Uecker line from Major League, what did he say?
- 6:26What was it? Which one?
- 6:30One, one, one. Yeah, one bleeping.
- 6:34We got three. We got three bleep in passing
- 6:38yards. You know, you know baby gets
- 6:44banged up, its the ribs, you can tell it.
- 6:46We said it earlier in the season we set it even before the season
- 6:50started, if he gets hurt, this team is insignificant trouble.
- 6:55He's hurting now I don't, I do not know the time frame, we
- 6:59won't know the time frame, let's just be honest.
- 7:02Yep. You know we're not going to know
- 7:04anything about BB until we won't know until 3:30 to 40 minutes
- 7:09before kick-off, when the media starts reporting of who's out,
- 7:15throwing the football and practice in warming up pregame
- 7:19that's when we'll know. And after, yes, I'd from that,
- 7:24it's going to be interesting because We don't.
- 7:28And we're going to talk about it more here in a little bit.
- 7:30But it's, it's this so close to the vest game that this staff
- 7:37plays to the detriment of everything, how folks view them,
- 7:42how folks embrace the program. I mean, there's just so many
- 7:46missed opportunities with the, the pr in the messaging that the
- 7:52fans get. And it's starting to To take a
- 7:57toll, I think on everybody. it is, I mean, you know, Not to get
- 8:04off topic too much of their sorry.
- 8:06We'll get there, we'll get there but it's just you know, the
- 8:09messaging is bad, you know, the messaging is bad.
- 8:13But what's worse Braun is. Okay, so you get an ox, K them
- 8:17to come in, right? And we've already mentioned
- 8:19that, it's not gonna be a good situation.
- 8:21I do think watching knocks throw the ball.
- 8:23I think, Knox has a slightly better armed than Braxton.
- 8:28He's not he's got a stronger arm yes'm not near the athleticism.
- 8:32Not Nearly the worry about the back end, if they're breaks, but
- 8:37that we come in and the first pass, he completes first of all,
- 8:41they ran a freaking read option to the short side for him.
- 8:46And he realizes, he's four yards behind.
- 8:49I think Caleb Smith the slightly down field.
- 8:51He just chucked it over shit. That's the first pass.
- 8:54That wasn't a true past. That was him being a heady
- 8:56player, getting rid of the ball with the actual first two
- 8:59passes. I know this, how to drive you
- 9:01crazy because your thing all year with BB has been let's get
- 9:06him easy, throws early, get him comfortable, you know, let's do
- 9:10this. Then let's go downfield.
- 9:14It wasn't one brine. The first two passes.
- 9:18You're not skating. Shot shell filled shots that
- 9:23Kaitlyn tank now take did Miss play his ball and that's okay
- 9:31new quarterback. I'm not going.
- 9:32I'm dating Robinson was a bright spot, you know less the fumble
- 9:37which we'll talk about in a few minutes but where's the easy
- 9:41shit? Where's the where's the easy
- 9:43hook passes? Where's the swing?
- 9:45Where is something that this guy can see a ball?
- 9:47Get completed? I don't care if it's at the line
- 9:50of scrimmage. Scrimmage or one yard pass.
- 9:53It shows tude, the last time. He threw a significant snap
- 9:59through significant ball and it alive contest was the, the pick
- 10:05So Littleton, why are you not trying to get this guy
- 10:08comfortable in this situation? It is, and it's not like we were
- 10:13down twenty one. Twenty four points?
- 10:17Yeah, it was, essentially a two possession game where we were
- 10:22still Within Reach. We were within reach the whole
- 10:25game, which will get to very soon that's coming up very soon.
- 10:29Guess what? Sit there and It shows the
- 10:36ineptitude that the person inch, I'm just gonna say it right now.
- 10:43The SOB calling the play. He is never going to get another
- 10:46Collegiate coaching job ever ever.
- 10:48No one will take him. I guarantee he's gonna be
- 10:51scraping for a high school job. I mean he's definitely not.
- 10:55I mean give him a D3 job wouldn't.
- 11:00Now Marty, Marty wouldn't hire, why did they go Mark Martin,
- 11:03Marty calls the plays be Marty wouldn't hire me anyway but
- 11:07would make him would make it not Pedro wouldn't want him, did
- 11:11you? Every single week, there more
- 11:46things that happen every single week.
- 11:49Yeah. I mean right now not not letting
- 11:52him go is is just kind of letting him, you know.
- 11:55Tied it on news here, it's true, he's hurt.
- 12:01I mean it's hurting our brand long-term it's hurting his
- 12:04viability as a head coach long-term and it's so many
- 12:10different angles especially on the offensive side of the ball
- 12:13that we're just seeing complete and utter chaos we've been this
- 12:18year, so, Far fairly well on third down but it took a big,
- 12:22big collapse this week. Oh, it was Dreadful.
- 12:25I mean, 3 of 12. I mean yeah, we were right at we
- 12:30were essentially right into their wheelhouse of what they do
- 12:33on third down as a. They're solid top 25, 30 defense
- 12:37in every aspect. They're not great at one thing,
- 12:40but yeah, it was, it was absolutely terrible.
- 12:42What's just it begs the question.
- 12:44What are they doing there in the week?
- 12:46What are they preparing for? At least the last two weeks we
- 12:49could say, we looked like a semblance of a team, but, you
- 12:54know, your quarterback goes out and it's what we talked about.
- 12:59It's what we talked about. There's things that you cannot
- 13:03do with Knox. There's things you can't do with
- 13:06him and there's things that you can't make a couple.
- 13:09So as you've said, Brian numerous times, would you say
- 13:12about BB? I mean, BB has been the reason
- 13:17that our offense is moved, but also the reason our offense
- 13:20can't get better, He any he puts a ceiling on the offense but he
- 13:25also keeps the floor somewhat high.
- 13:29And let's not let's not talk about looking at game on
- 13:31Saturday night. With what hooker did?
- 13:36Yeah, we he had more touchdowns in the first half than we had
- 13:39yards throwing and we hard Gorge rowing for.
- 13:45And so it's beginner coming. Apparently, clear that He was
- 13:51the most talented, and if I can't tell you what I said, 10
- 13:57days ago, much less 10 months ago, understand why he left
- 14:01fucks? Why I left.
- 14:04But it was more of a detriment to the team and he's went
- 14:07somewhere with heiple hypos always coaches.
- 14:10Quarterbacks well, always gain. He is finding a rhythm.
- 14:15And, you know, pulling the upset off at Kentucky, they're
- 14:19probably definitely going to the Bowl.
- 14:20The toughest part of their schedule is, you know I think
- 14:23they got, they got Georgia left. Yep.
- 14:26Then it's like maybe I once often but they've got to to very
- 14:29winnable games but they're gonna they're gonna blow the doors off
- 14:32and handi-van. If they go in there and there
- 14:36are five and five and six they're going to blow the doors
- 14:39off the Mandy. There's not even a doubt about
- 14:41that but it's you see how he passes in the runs especially
- 14:45the downfield shots. And we don't we don't have that
- 14:47at all and you know, I mean, we'll say it, I mean that
- 14:52offense is a better offense in terms of steam and it fits his
- 14:57skill set very well. And and the offense here was a
- 15:02fairly good match for his skill set.
- 15:04So I mean, it's not so much like it's great that he's blowing up
- 15:09there and and I'm glad that he's doing all that but When we look
- 15:15at it, if he'd have been here, I think we would have been we're a
- 15:18better team with him than we are without him.
- 15:21And I think and I think and I think that's aside from scheme,
- 15:24I know he's in a better situation in terms of having a
- 15:29little bit higher caliber players around him will add it
- 15:32to the fact you've got better better scheme overall better
- 15:35better coaching this just say that better.
- 15:38Yeah Josh heupel is doing more with the Tennessee recruits that
- 15:42Pruitt brought in improves doing.
- 15:45Yeah, it says a lot about heiple.
- 15:48He walked in there. He figured it out.
- 15:51He wasn't afraid to make a quarterback change.
- 15:53I felt like he wasn't calling the plays.
- 15:55I think he is calling the plays now, don't quote me on that, but
- 15:59he's finding it on the go in how they competed with Alabama.
- 16:04Right. Yeah, they competed with Alabama
- 16:06was a huge sign, and I think in a few weeks here, I think maybe
- 16:11even this week is when it is when they play Georgia, probably
- 16:15how they'll compete with Georgia.
- 16:17Well, they're probably about two cycles worth of defensive Talent
- 16:22away from making making a press in the East, not saying that
- 16:27they're going to match Georgia, but they'll be right there in
- 16:30the conversation of that next tier in.
- 16:34One to two years, if they get some some more recruits in the
- 16:36door for that defense. Abso-freaking-lutely one of the
- 16:42things was another positive. We did not break the scoring
- 16:45streak this week. Thank you, John.
- 16:47Parker Romo. Banging through it by about that
- 16:50much the field goal, you know, in the second quarter to make it
- 16:57a 17-13 game, where again, we were still In reach and reach in
- 17:03and we were still in reach with four minutes and 47 seconds left
- 17:07as well, Curtis oh. Well, well, let's do this first.
- 17:11We were on the doorstep to make it a one touchdown game and tape
- 17:14on those the ball and that sucks because that was probably the
- 17:17best Drive of the night that we, yeah, yeah, three minutes.
- 17:22We had some runs. We had a downfield, passport,
- 17:25Avion, making a big play, another big run, malachite,
- 17:28again, with the big run, Gallo with the big catch and we get
- 17:32there. It's that inside screen and he
- 17:35got lit up and it was essentially the back home from
- 17:39behind. I looked at it.
- 17:42It's not like he was loose with the ball, just perfect, right?
- 17:45Just perfect, there's a perfect punch and although that killed
- 17:50defense held up. We'll talk about them later.
- 17:52They weren't perfect but they did have their moments.
- 17:56But what Brian is talking about is with 4 minutes and 47 seconds
- 18:01left. At.
- 18:06Our own, what was it, 25 yard line, 4th and 6?
- 18:13You don't 14, you got two timeouts in the bag.
- 18:17If you pump the ball, you literally need rien out.
- 18:21Score a touchdown in two minutes, get the onside kick and
- 18:27then use for another touchdown. Essentially, Justin Fuente, came
- 18:33quitter make quick wit, he decided even in the Press was, I
- 18:37wanted to give us a chance, you're down two touchdowns and
- 18:40it's under five minutes left. The most, you can extend this
- 18:42game is too. Six.
- 18:45It's six minutes. You don't have enough time to.
- 18:48So he quit if you were if that was you know seven-and-a-half
- 18:54sure that's that's seven a half minutes left.
- 18:57That's a logical thing to make with with under five minutes
- 19:01left to go in the game that is malpractice.
- 19:07Now, that is malpractice because you're essentially folding up
- 19:12shop and saying all right. Well, I need my defense to give
- 19:16me the ball back and then I've got to do something.
- 19:18I haven't done the whole game, two times.
- 19:21Yeah I trust you and you're not going to get the ball back,
- 19:26you're not not the way. They were running the ball and
- 19:28Gala. We didn't.
- 19:32We didn't get the ball back. You know, we sit here and it was
- 19:37just like it was a quick. It was a surrender cover, it was
- 19:40a surrender, cover, it was malpractice, it was negligent.
- 19:44Yeah, it was something that I didn't think like this was kind
- 19:49of a low point for me. And this is this is classic
- 19:52Fuente though. When we talk about some of the
- 19:56weird fourth quarter choices, some of the, the
- 19:58conservativeness, when you get a lead, like, all of this is from
- 20:02the classic Fuente Playbook like I just don't get being that
- 20:10conservative down two touchdowns, nope, it just, it
- 20:18baffles me. It was one of the most
- 20:21head-scratching decisions that Fuente is made in his entire
- 20:26time at Virginia Tech and he's made some big ones, also nothing
- 20:30but this one did it just It didn't make sense.
- 20:34It was pretty much saying, guys we're done.
- 20:38We're done, we're done. We're not playing any more with
- 20:40less than with just under five minutes left.
- 20:42He said, now we're good. We're cooked.
- 20:45We're we, he said to the team essentially on both sides of the
- 20:49ball. We can't win this game.
- 20:53Y'all are not good enough to win this game.
- 20:57I am not good enough to win this game.
- 21:00That's what it was. That's exactly what it was.
- 21:04It's irritating because in that situation, you have nothing to
- 21:09lose. If you go forward and you miss
- 21:11it, the probabilities was probably about eight to ten
- 21:16percent, you could do it. So very, very small that you
- 21:19could actually pull and tie the game back up.
- 21:22Yep. So well, the thing is that if
- 21:26you end up Driving the field and you get a touchdown there.
- 21:30You haven't wasted the clock of kicking the ball, back to him.
- 21:33You haven't wasted your time out.
- 21:34So you can still have two timeouts by the time you go for
- 21:38your onside kick and if you don't get the onside kick, you
- 21:40can still have a chance to get the ball back, and we'll tie it
- 21:44up true. Once you kick that there, at
- 21:48least running what a minute, two minutes off that their least
- 21:52running two minutes off that, but even if you don't even if
- 21:56you kicking you hold perfectly, It which we have seen already
- 22:00probably wasn't going to happen, even if you stop them, and burn
- 22:04two timeouts. Ten seconds for the kick. 10
- 22:10seconds per playwright give or take sure.
- 22:13Yeah four minutes and 15 seconds on the clock.
- 22:15They're going to punch you way back in your end zone.
- 22:18Again, likely and now well, now you've got a score and you don't
- 22:24have the ability. If you throw a pass on the
- 22:27middle of the field and you get a first down and you can't get
- 22:31everybody down, you don't have the ability to control you.
- 22:34Just you're, you're either wasting the down with the spike
- 22:37or you're having a call to play fast and Waste the time getting
- 22:40lined up in a new formation lacing, time getting the play
- 22:44in, all that all of that, fun stuff, all of that fun stuff.
- 22:50So we go to they they run on place, they win the game.
- 22:54All right, so the press conference comes Brian, we had
- 22:58gotten when the tree was going to be out, right?
- 23:01We got win it. It was Monday night, Monday
- 23:05night, when we didn't talk. About it because we got it for
- 23:11me, a source that were not. It is what it is, right?
- 23:15And but we got it from someone, he's probably not going to play.
- 23:18Okay, that's fine. You know about this early in the
- 23:21week. You probably knew about it
- 23:23Sunday. You probably knew about it.
- 23:24Saturday, you can game plan for what to do in that case.
- 23:31Well, I saw it on David cutting hands, tweet it was, we didn't
- 23:37know right up until game time that.
- 23:39That Trey wasn't going to play. What?
- 23:45Yeah, I've been in this discussion most of the day.
- 23:50Oh yes, you had big time. It's it hasn't been a fun
- 23:55discussion because so to me it's two angles here either this is
- 23:59Foo playing injury information so close to the damn vest that
- 24:04he's lying to cover. Shia, he's covered or he is so
- 24:11like, I don't believe that there is this level of ineptitude that
- 24:16he didn't know the status of trays injury.
- 24:18I think this is him trying to be so close to the With injury
- 24:24information that he's fabricating information to the
- 24:27meat. Yes, whether purposefully or
- 24:30inadvertently and it really doesn't matter because it's
- 24:33malpractice either way. Because I don't believe at all
- 24:39that. The head coach did not know the
- 24:41status of the injury to his star receiver, the number one
- 24:46throughout the week. Yeah, I don't believe that
- 24:49whatsoever. That that would not be the case.
- 24:54There's a ton of things. We heard Whispers, you know, did
- 24:59it didn't affect your decision, it really didn't affect my
- 25:01decision in our predictions. I know some people are like
- 25:05coming out and saying Saying, all you knew this information?
- 25:08Okay, listen, the know about Djokovic.
- 25:11Brian talked about that. We had a wind of tray, you don't
- 25:14mention it because if somebody tells you something and they
- 25:17trust you, you don't mention it. It hadn't reached official
- 25:21channel, so I, we weren't going to talk about it on here.
- 25:24We see until it reaches official channels.
- 25:28We don't play that game, okay? Not at all.
- 25:31We're not, we're not going to sit on here and, and feed you
- 25:34hearsay and shit like that. I mean, damn right.
- 25:37We are we might know something but until it's official in our
- 25:40mind, we're keeping it off the air.
- 25:42Yes, we are. Alright, so that was said some
- 25:46the Lash back happened with trays Mom, I'm You by Wednesday
- 25:52that I wasn't, what is it? She basically she, you win state
- 25:55was absolutely. He was not going to play.
- 25:57She canceled her plane ticket to Boston.
- 25:59Cancelled hotel reservation. She was implying.
- 26:02Whoa, we got wind of it. His mom, you win state.
- 26:06She's making all her cancellation, she's not flying
- 26:08up the Boston because Trey's not going to be there makes perfect
- 26:11sense, but the head coach at Virginia Tech football.
- 26:13Team. Did not know that his number
- 26:15one, star receiver. I call bullshit.
- 26:18I think he was trying his excuse, we know about it.
- 26:21So close to game. So we don't know how to really
- 26:23play. That's why we look like trash.
- 26:25No. You look like trash because
- 26:28you're offensive coordinator and certain guys on that cell Baltar
- 26:31trash and you're trying to protect them and you're making
- 26:34yourself look like an ass. Now.
- 26:38Brian, I hope you got this. Get the Tweet up. if you a
- 26:43little reading, which one Forest week from today, Okay.
- 26:50What will Stewart at ESL? Because all right.
- 26:55So Pete Morris, please let me clarify a few items.
- 27:00The medical staff and coaches are in constant communication.
- 27:04Every injury is different game. Availability, may not be
- 27:07determined until later in the week in many instances player.
- 27:11Safety kancare is always a top priority.
- 27:16That's great Pete. But you didn't give us any new
- 27:21information there. Everything you just said, is
- 27:24something that in my mind I had already assumed was the case.
- 27:27Yeah, you didn't answer the question.
- 27:29The question is, why did the head coach?
- 27:34State in a press conference that they didn't know that Trey was
- 27:37going to miss this game till very late in the process when
- 27:42his mom knew for certain on Wednesday.
- 27:46And other people knew as early as Monday that it was a good
- 27:50probability that he wasn't playing.
- 27:55So what is it? Is it the medical staff not
- 27:58reporting injuries to the coach. Is it the coached lying?
- 28:03Well, I'll pee did was throw gasoline on this thing because
- 28:05all because he came out there with.
- 28:07And I mean, I'll say it's just that like classic generic PR
- 28:10bullshit that did nothing to add to the conversation.
- 28:15It merely pointed out information that most fans had
- 28:19already assumed it. Pissed us off.
- 28:21If you want more than me, I had something.
- 28:24He's going on here today. Some errands running and you
- 28:27were lighting it up, but it when I read it is like, no, the
- 28:32question is, why why did he not know?
- 28:36And the wise are either a he's lying.
- 28:42Or be somebody truly didn't tell him and I really find that hard
- 28:47to believe. I find that hard to believe.
- 28:50I find it hard to believe that he did not know he was going to
- 28:54be there all on him, all on him 100%.
- 28:59And You Know, It's Just So that's the offense.
- 29:06That's the fire. That was a lot of fun.
- 29:11But let's go over to the defensive side of the ball.
- 29:15Siglo over here, set it on Wednesday night.
- 29:18There were some Whispers That there was a chance your coat.
- 29:23It could be that You didn't say definitively.
- 29:27He's going to be back. You just said you had read in an
- 29:29article. I don't know where it was
- 29:31published. I saw someone that was
- 29:34affiliated with BC tweeting that jerk.
- 29:37Oh, Vic had been seen throwing at practice?
- 29:40Hey, he saw someone tweet this. So it wasn't, like, we got this
- 29:43behind the scenes and we held it.
- 29:45He said this on Wednesday night because of that, tweet, from
- 29:48someone associated with the program, And then on Friday,
- 29:52just a few hours for game time till Djokovic will be starting
- 29:55tonight and is their offense, a lot different between your
- 30:00kovacic Rosell or Alexander. No.
- 30:04I mean I mean they really I mean obviously Moorhead can, yeah,
- 30:12you're good. Moorhead has a little bit more
- 30:14of a of an arm than Rosell but and obviously Phil we saw was a
- 30:21little bit. Still a little bit limited with
- 30:22what he could do with his arm right now.
- 30:24Sure probably a grip thing and not being able to rip it like he
- 30:29wants to and just general rust from not playing for what?
- 30:34Been weeks, six weeks, six weeks?
- 30:37Yeah, six weeks. So the combination of those two
- 30:40things are probably what's what held him back.
- 30:43But I mean, they were still running the full complement of
- 30:45their offense, you know what the wrinkle the mean wrinkle of him
- 30:50on the read option. It baffled us.
- 30:55And I mean men, he went 70 yards.
- 30:58You know, unlike nine carries over seven yards a carry
- 31:01including that one play where we had him dead to rights about 12
- 31:05yards in the backfield. He avoids not one but two
- 31:11potential sacks and gets up the field for a 10-plus yard game.
- 31:15Yeah and and if you ask me and this is me this offense wasn't
- 31:21going to change whoever was out there.
- 31:23But if you put it on a scale of 1 to 100, even an injured, your
- 31:27kovich is probably somewhere between and 80 and 90 versus
- 31:33we're gonna sell and Moorhead will be below that.
- 31:36Humor, 8 full, we've seen them compete with some of the better
- 31:40teams. Yeah.
- 31:42And I think the thing that we can see was missing, he wasn't
- 31:45able to rip it. Like he normally is and like I
- 31:49said, I think that's probably due to not being able to get at
- 31:52least feel comfortable with the grippy at, on the football.
- 31:55And like I said, probably just still knocking off some Rust
- 31:57with the timing and everything with his receivers, but there
- 32:00definitely wasn't the zip on the ball when he was throwing it
- 32:03down the field. Like we're used to still, was
- 32:05better than good. Get down the field then gross L
- 32:08had been on the whole the last six weeks but you probably
- 32:13probably lost a little bit in terms of arm strength, compared
- 32:17to what you have got with Moorhead, but you probably roll
- 32:20with the more seasoned player at that point.
- 32:22So that's probably why they went that direction.
- 32:24And I know they kind of left it up to him and sounds like
- 32:27whether he felt comfortable going, he went in there and said
- 32:29he wanted to play so they played him and you know, he didn't have
- 32:34his best game throwing the ball but he Me too especially way
- 32:37they were running the ball with Garwin the way they were using
- 32:40that read-option with him and taking advantage of a lot of
- 32:44missed tackles by our defensive front six.
- 32:47Yeah. And you talk about the arm
- 32:48strength and you think about, let's think about two of the big
- 32:51plays that early in the game. It gave me the feeling that, you
- 32:54know, we're not going to win this game.
- 32:56It's just you have those breaks. Let's talk about Dorian strong,
- 33:01he rolled out, and he tried to throw the ball, and he's short
- 33:03of the ball and Dorian just picked it.
- 33:05And Dorian's running trying to find a lane to get up and give
- 33:09Djokovic credit, he came back down, field bump the ball loose.
- 33:14And they recover. And you just sign.
- 33:18I sat there and said they had a good drive.
- 33:21Going. Try to roll pocket, throw you
- 33:25left it. A little short, young guy came
- 33:27up, picked it. And there are some people on the
- 33:30timeline, there were screaming like when I saw him running
- 33:33around like that looking for something I was just screaming.
- 33:36Go down, go down. There's nothing there he didn't
- 33:40they fumble? They score off that with
- 33:44actually a jerk covid run. Yeah.
- 33:47And if that wasn't bad enough I feel like that the next one was
- 33:52even worse. Because how many times do you
- 33:53see that happen? Yeah I mean daily comes in makes
- 33:57a good pass defense. Probably could have knocked it
- 34:01towards the ground a little bit more but bang-bang play.
- 34:04Their tipped is like eight yards back like what?
- 34:08Like yeah like eight or nine yards back and you know winner
- 34:14gets the the reception there ends up.
- 34:17Being a first down, you know, you think you're potentially
- 34:20getting off the field again and then all of a sudden you're
- 34:22looking at another first down for the other team and those are
- 34:26two. That's the to play those like
- 34:27the are this this unit snake been denied that they can't do
- 34:30anything, right? Even when they do right, they do
- 34:32wrong. And then on that one to Winter,
- 34:36he doesn't even catch it and get the first down.
- 34:39He's a yard short, they plow over the defensive line Djokovic
- 34:44does on sneak easy first down. Down what?
- 34:48You know, how do you feel? How does secondary field?
- 34:51Ryan, how does a secondary have to feel when they we've got to
- 34:54pick. We stopped them on Third and
- 34:56long with a great pasta flexion. And they essentially got 10
- 34:59points out of it. Yeah.
- 35:01Hi, like how do you even stay in the mindset?
- 35:03That How do you even stay in the game after that happens in the
- 35:09first 20 minutes of it? Yeah, is definitely
- 35:15disheartening the fact that they kept coming back and you know
- 35:20still hell the pass game more or less in check for most of the
- 35:26game. Yeah, they weren't able to do a
- 35:28ton down the field even when they took shots, obviously they
- 35:32were purposefully leaning on their running game.
- 35:35Most of the time, especially once they got that big early
- 35:38lead, but You know, it was kind of it was kind of hard that even
- 35:44when they were making plays, you know, they've it's still ended
- 35:47up working out for the offense, so that was frustrating early on
- 35:52and I think some of that frustration carried over.
- 35:56But, you know, when we look at the running game, that's where
- 36:00that's where things started to fall apart for the defense
- 36:03d-line, and linebackers were getting kind of pushed around by
- 36:06that offensive line Lindstrom was a wasn't Animal inside their
- 36:14get into this second level on Dax, most of the night, it was
- 36:22wasn't pretty dead Dax and Tisdale were finding themselves
- 36:26out of position a lot. It kind of see it was more of
- 36:29that 2020 style. Shit rearing its head.
- 36:34Here you go. It looked as close to 2020
- 36:39defense as I've seen. Seen this year and that was
- 36:44disheartening and it's not that they went out there and they
- 36:47gave up a ton of points. The they're still doing a freely
- 36:50and fairly decent job of bending and not breaking, but you got to
- 36:54get a team like that off the field more than you did you.
- 36:57Absolutely. And that's the problem is, that
- 36:59they extended so many drives. There were so many 10 and 12,
- 37:03Play drives, and then just methodically, moving the ball
- 37:05down, field it, and then you can't do that when A thin team
- 37:12especially up front and I mean you're going to wear yourself
- 37:14down so fast and that's what happened.
- 37:17I know. And you know Garland over 130
- 37:21carries he looked like he was like under force.
- 37:25It was the second worst yards per carry production game since
- 37:29Temple, but he still went over 100.
- 37:31They went to 34 is a teams. The sad part is for us.
- 37:36At least it's the this was the death by a Thousand Cuts that
- 37:39you always talk about. They had no gains over 20.
- 37:43No running gains over 20 yards. But you know what they had and
- 37:47you already mentioned it kind of talking about.
- 37:49They just kept leaning and just kept long extending Drive. 22
- 37:53first downs. 22 in 50% on third down and fourth down.
- 38:00So you know every other time we had a chance to get him off the
- 38:04field, we couldn't they extended the drives.
- 38:06So in one sense you get pissed the defense like damn you guys.
- 38:10Why don't you make that 25%? On the other hand, you say got
- 38:14them off the field, a lot and they did keep us in this game
- 38:20because they didn't give up big plays because even though they
- 38:23were missing tackles and it was ugly at times, they were still
- 38:26stopping drives at times if the defensive magic imagine if You
- 38:30played sound like a god, like a seven to three games.
- 38:37Yeah, it would have been an ugly ugly.
- 38:38Matt, Bevin we played sound defense by the took the over
- 38:41would have just like, went out back and just hang their head
- 38:44against trees. Like, why did I take over
- 38:47against these Duty? Yeah.
- 38:49And and everything we saw on defense, there was nothing
- 38:52egregiously bad. It was just consistently not
- 38:55enough to get off the field. Yeah.
- 38:58And I think That goes back. I mean, some of that's by Design
- 39:02with this Bend, don't break style but that's where Bend
- 39:05don't break style in a game, like this comes back to bite
- 39:08you, right? But because because you're
- 39:11killing your killing the, the the time of possession you're
- 39:14getting killing time of possession, and then your
- 39:18offense can't do anything with it.
- 39:20It's true, but a lot of the times Brian, it was the missed
- 39:23tackles that were happening. You know, instead of being the
- 39:27three are gain, it was the five. Yeah.
- 39:30Instead of you will only have six tackles for loss no sax.
- 39:33Instead of being the tackle for loss and putting them at second
- 39:36and 12 second, 11. They'd get it back to the line
- 39:40of scrimmage or one or two more yards, and that's the ones we've
- 39:43talked about it. Several times up.
- 39:44That's the frustrating piece. It's, because it's the momentum,
- 39:49right? Because you imagine those guys
- 39:51coming off after they go out. I listen.
- 39:53Hey, keep running hard. They had you for a six yard
- 39:57loss. You made it a one-yard gain.
- 39:58They had you for a sack and you got the ball away.
- 40:02It mentality. Its momentum.
- 40:04It's being able to walk to the sideline and saying you're this
- 40:07close. You keep pressing instead of
- 40:09being a zero yard gain, you're going to get five and that's
- 40:12what they did. And they kept pounding and kept
- 40:15pounding on us until eventually, you know, at the end be set on
- 40:19the ball for the 447, they took it out, they won the game.
- 40:23I want to, I want to what I want to address before we go to break
- 40:26here. Brian, the Dax incident That's
- 40:32got a personal foul penalty later on Djokovic, borderline,
- 40:35whatever. And then He essentially shove
- 40:40Jeff Heffley. This is my view on that.
- 40:44If he does not shove Jeff Heffley, he would have fucking
- 40:48ran Jeff haffley over in probably seriously fucking
- 40:51injured him. So there were people for janya
- 40:53tech fans on the timeline. Saying, what kind of shit is
- 40:56this? This is garbage.
- 40:57This is the type of player coach Know, believe it or not, him
- 41:01shoving him down to the ground. Probably seriously.
- 41:06Help halfling. Not get fucking killed by
- 41:10240-pound linebacker, fully padded.
- 41:14My opinion. I don't know how you feel on the
- 41:16incident Brian, but I think how backs what he did was right?
- 41:21Not, if you really want to hurt haffley, he could have just kept
- 41:23running. I don't think there was intent
- 41:27in what he did in terms of trying to trying to shove him,
- 41:30out of the way, out of frustration.
- 41:33I think it was just, he's there. Let me get this guy to the way
- 41:37as I'm running through. But if you combine it at the
- 41:44time and I get where the were the knee-jerk reaction comes
- 41:47from because you got to play that probably wasn't the
- 41:51smartest play, by him anyway, he should have been aware of where
- 41:54he was on the field. Not carried, carry through the
- 41:57tackle and took him to the ground with the push.
- 42:01So that's It wasn't quite the bang-bang play there, and then
- 42:09you add that that action after, after that happens.
- 42:14You get why the knee-jerk happened?
- 42:16The knee-jerk reaction on that. I think it's Much Ado About
- 42:19Nothing or at least not. Not anything worth dwelling on
- 42:25it. Kind of is what it is.
- 42:28The play that hurt us was the play of the of the tackle
- 42:33itself. Not anything had happened
- 42:34extracurricular. There we go.
- 42:37So we'll put that one to bed and again if you were under a rock
- 42:42for the last 48 hours or so look he's end up losing 2:43 up in
- 42:48Boston during the red bandana game, and Brian what we'll do.
- 42:52Now before we get into a couple other things here tonight, we
- 42:57are going to take a quick pause for a message from our digital
- 42:59partners. Because we take a quick break,
- 43:03we'd like to tell you about getting your free website report

- 43:20forward slash free Dash website, Dash report.
- 43:24Now back to the episode All right, and we are back.
- 43:31So earlier today, me and Brian put our heads together and said,
- 43:35we need to throw this out here because what CH loss is worse of
- 43:39the last three seasons. Is it Duke in 2019?
- 43:44Is it the pit game 4714 of 2020? Or is it this game?
- 43:51And we put a pole out here in almost 400 of you guys have
- 43:56responded. We really appreciate that and
- 43:59brought on drumroll, please. The winner is 2019, Juke
- 44:06carrying 68% of the vote. Second place at 29%, I think
- 44:11carrying maybe a little more me and you were surprised was the
- 44:15BC game from Friday at 29%. And then last but not least with
- 44:19a handful of boats is the pit 2020 game.
- 44:23Yep. Now go ahead run.
- 44:26I was going to say we did have a couple other right ends.
- 44:29The other one that was probably the strongest was ODU from from
- 44:342018 ODU and pit from 2018, several of those.
- 44:39But I just wanted to go through some of the comments here and
- 44:41let's just talk about some of our listeners will give you a
- 44:43shout outs out there. Let's start with our boy tally.
- 44:46He said BC, and he said, because we had zero highlights.
- 44:50It is true, we had no real highlights in this game,
- 44:55everything bad. Other than Peter, more kicking
- 44:58the ball. Three yards at halftime just
- 45:00enough said, I boy James Ambrose hits up all of the above
- 45:05inferior opponent and Duke pit was missing talent.
- 45:09That game BC was just this was a coaching Miss.
- 45:13Here's one of the 2018 pit James Copeland God we chat with Cajun
- 45:17Ali. He put 18 jute or 18 pit as the
- 45:22worst But on here was Duke 19 and he said that was when the
- 45:28nation saw through wasn't it, dip a couple more we're going to
- 45:33keep going, just and then we'll give our complete thoughts on
- 45:36this because you guys make, I won't give credit.
- 45:40It wasn't most of you guys didn't.
- 45:43Just put the game and then leave it.
- 45:45You put your reasonings behind it and I love when people give
- 45:48their opinion in their thoughts. So I'm going to read a couple
- 45:51more brown eyes. I'm already quite a few more
- 45:53because you guys did awesome tonight.
- 45:59GJ p v t0 9:00 after the debacle, 2018, food needed a new
- 46:03start in 2019, he did not get it, he did not get it after the
- 46:07shit show, that happened in Chestnut Hill and then the ODU
- 46:12game and then the close call with ermine do game with the
- 46:16beginning of the end. He turned the tide midseason but
- 46:19we closed out on a sour note. Yep.
- 46:22Jake Lamb 2019, because cooker would have been number one in
- 46:27Camp. Dixon Mills hits, ODU, 2019.
- 46:31I said, I think you meant 18. He did say that was it, but 2019
- 46:36was the precursor for the Duke game because the Furman and the
- 46:40ODU game watching those two. What happened to Duke was not a
- 46:43surprise to a lot of people. Yeah.
- 46:47We'll keep going here. My buddy Pete, the over too.
- 46:50Deep Duke was the Duke was the worst because the worst home
- 46:53loss and it was a bad Duke team and CJ from VA.
- 46:58This was the one you were talking about Brian none.
- 47:00It's ODU. We were ranked in the top 15.
- 47:03They were owing three. They had lost to bad team.
- 47:06They finished four and eight. We were there.
- 47:07Last, we were there first to four wins at season.
- 47:12You had been downhill since then and I think everything is right
- 47:15there. I will Count the value of the
- 47:18ranking because we should have been ranked at that point in the
- 47:22season. It was it was totally still
- 47:25based off of the strength of the Phantom FSU win.
- 47:29But everything else you said was spot on there and it definitely
- 47:34looked worse because the fact that we were ranked, obviously,
- 47:37that that heard in terms of perception, even though the
- 47:40perception was a little bit of a facade, you want to give your
- 47:44take first. You want me to lead on this?
- 47:47Well, let's let's before we give our take on what we feel.
- 47:49Is the words. Let's go with the other two
- 47:51because believe it or not. Of the one we agree with me and
- 47:56Brian agreed. On the same one.
- 47:57Let's start with the, with the furthest back almost over two
- 48:02years ago, the Duke 20 Nightwing loss.
- 48:07We had hope right Brown. Even after that loss, there was
- 48:10hope. We brought Jerry Keeling.
- 48:14We had Quincy and we had hindon to force for quarterbacks both
- 48:21highly ranked in the wings. They were there, we had a good
- 48:26Core group of players right after 2018, those guys were
- 48:30going up like yeah, it was like it was shitty, but you feel like
- 48:35things could change and then You felt like there was at least a
- 48:41pivot. There was at least something to
- 48:43Pivot to even if that pivot didn't work.
- 48:46There was something there right? Yeah.
- 48:50There was something there and it's the Shawshank Redemption on
- 48:56right Ron. Yep.
- 48:58Hope it's a good thing. It's the dangerous thing and it
- 49:02was dangerous for this fan base because what happened between
- 49:07the Miami game and even the bowl game, you felt like okay this
- 49:11might be on back on the right track.
- 49:15Yes, we lost a Notre Dame. Yeah we lost you vo the first
- 49:18time since we were like 20 that they done that but it still felt
- 49:25like hope because with the UVA game, they needed Perkins to
- 49:28play. Literally the game of uva's,
- 49:31entire football, history, to win that game.
- 49:35And then the Kentucky game, The game Friday night.
- 49:42I'll just say it. I can't I didn't vote for that
- 49:45one. And I didn't vote for do 2019,
- 49:48because I felt like Friday night, Brian.
- 49:51It's over It's over. Yeah, it's going to be very hard
- 49:58for them to come back from that because that was as flat of a
- 50:02performance, especially on the offensive side as, as we've
- 50:06seen. And in terms of just output in
- 50:10general, as bad as we've seen, I mean, there's been other games
- 50:13where our offense hasn't done well, but, you know, we're
- 50:15talking about a hurricane game or shit like that, not not
- 50:22Perfect. Fall conditions, in Chestnut
- 50:24Hill 40 degrees risk all night and that happened, you know,
- 50:32it's over that. I think that's the general
- 50:34consensus. That's it's coming down.
- 50:37How quick it happens. I think that's that's to be
- 50:42determined. I said it based on, just the
- 50:45performance and then the post game stuff.
- 50:50I didn't think you should have made it to the MonDay, presser
- 50:53and we'll see. Obviously, it seems like he
- 50:54will. It's it'sit's just so it'sit's
- 51:02laughable. At this point, it is getting to
- 51:03the point that apathy is said in, in the fan base, the fan
- 51:06base is done and I'm sad because I hope so.
- 51:10Still show up for the Duke game because the seniors deserve it.
- 51:13The players in general deserve, it seniors are developing guys
- 51:17deserve. They've been playing, they've
- 51:18been playing their ass off, man. In they've been let down by
- 51:25their staff. They've been let down by the
- 51:28program in general. And I hope that we are able to
- 51:33make the right decision to move on because the players deserve
- 51:37it, the players deserve to when they go out there and lay some
- 51:40I'm up that they're going to have the best chance they can of
- 51:45coming away with a victory and I feel like that's that hasn't
- 51:47been the case for at least two years now, if not longer.
- 51:54You know, I think as we've talked about a little bit with
- 51:59with this, you know, we felt like Jerry kill helped out in
- 52:012019 and there was hope that that would carry over after he
- 52:06left and it absolutely has not well what happened last night?
- 52:10Not think what we felt happened after 2019, we saw those things
- 52:13in place and I think you talked about carryover you felt like
- 52:16there will be new things implemented.
- 52:20Things will be done differently in.
- 52:22It looks like it was going to be that way.
- 52:25It shows that the ever so lessons learned from Jerry kill
- 52:28there was no Lessons Learned. There were, no, the lessons were
- 52:31learned put into practice when they needed it, and then
- 52:34immediately reverted back, right?
- 52:37It's like, you know, it's like punishing your child for doing
- 52:41something. And taking a toy away and then
- 52:47giving that toy back and then the then the same behavior
- 52:51happens again and you're just like, and that's what's
- 52:55happened. They were shown what they were
- 52:57doing wrong, they were corrected, he was out of bounds
- 53:01by the way, I don't, you know, I don't know what they've ruled.
- 53:03I can't hear it. He stepped out of bounds and he
- 53:05was the first guy to touch the ball, he was not forced out.
- 53:09It looks like that's for me because I have Higby on my
- 53:12fantasy team. All right.
- 53:18So obviously we've talked BC 2021, we are the three
- 53:24percenters. Yeah, we're the three
- 53:27percentage. Yeah, it sounds like some sort
- 53:29of group for those, if you're listening, if you voted for pit.
- 53:39DMS or plowing the chain. Because literally out of about
- 53:42400 votes. When it's like three person.
- 53:44It's literally like six or seven of us and it's me and Brian were
- 53:47talking throughout the day in just four.
- 53:51We jumped on here tonight. Why was pit so bad?
- 53:58Pit was bad because they were missing the large majority of
- 54:03their all-conference caliber players.
- 54:09We came into that game in a winnable batch up and just got
- 54:14the dog shit. Beat out of us, we were more or
- 54:17less. It was one of the times of the
- 54:19year where we were more or less healthy going into that game
- 54:23last year mostly full complement of weapons and we did nothing
- 54:30and we let them run up and down the field on us let them throw
- 54:34up and down the field on us and we had nothing to respond with
- 54:37on offense. It's we did nothing.
- 54:41He looked terrible. We looked uninterested
- 54:44especially on offense, especially with the defense.
- 54:47Remember the first half of that game defense played good.
- 54:50We were kept us in it and then the wheels fell off in the
- 54:54second half. This is why I chose that game.
- 54:59If you remember guys, last year Liberty?
- 55:01I was out firing. This was the game that push
- 55:04Braun over the edge and that's when Whispers started of he's
- 55:09going to be gone, he's going to be gone and that's why this game
- 55:12to me. I voted for because it was we
- 55:16thought after that game it's over.
- 55:19We're going to get a whole new regime, you know, we're going
- 55:24to, you know, probably get some more We're going to get some
- 55:29more working, probably some more funding that our assistance will
- 55:35recruiting staff. And when the press conference,
- 55:38with what happened after you V8, and it didn't happen.
- 55:40I revert back to this game and I said that was it that they were
- 55:45missing. So many players, we coach so
- 55:47bad, we played so bad. That's the coach.
- 55:51This is the issue and you rip the rug out from us.
- 55:56And 2018 pit. Yeah, that was really bad, but
- 56:00after what we'd seen early in that season, it was expected to
- 56:02happen. Yeah.
- 56:04That didn't shock me as much. I mean, we were a very young
- 56:06team. We just lost a lot of our core
- 56:08players from the previous season.
- 56:11It was a bad loss because that bet pit team was not as good as
- 56:15the 2020 B team, but the 2020 pit team was missing more of the
- 56:19players that counted in that game than the 2018.
- 56:23So and it was also we was all set.
- 56:25Where, you know, 2018 after 2016 and 2017, you're not pulling the
- 56:31plug on your head coach 2020. After that performance, that was
- 56:35a pull. The plug level loss.
- 56:39Yes. And that's why it's different.
- 56:41That's why? That's why ways more for me,
- 56:44especially what had happened with, but there was a step to
- 56:47get there. Right?
- 56:48But why North Carolina had looked the way we had played
- 56:50against wake, the Liberty game and then that game.
- 56:55Then that game there were there was all of this thing on the
- 56:58table, so that's us. And we are clearly in the
- 57:03minority here and that's fine. And I don't think anybody that
- 57:08answered otherwise is wrong. I just think, I think we have a,
- 57:11we have different opinions of power where it is and, you know,
- 57:15people that say yeah, that's a bad Duke team and he should
- 57:18never get blown out by Duke especially in whom I 110 percent
- 57:21agree with you but There was there's one thing in 1921.
- 57:29They got stolen 19, you had hope 21.
- 57:33We have hope 20, The Hope got stolen from us a few weeks
- 57:36later. That's the big.
- 57:38That's why I had a vote for because the hope that stole from
- 57:41me feel he hasn't gotten stolen at least from Corning 21 yet.
- 57:45I hope they don't steal 2021 because I will put this poll out
- 57:48again and I will vote the BC game, not the pit game.
- 57:53All right, Brian, this is this is Last segment.
- 57:56Well next to last time we're going to talk about our pics in
- 57:58a little while here. A buddy at car, we chat with
- 58:04their follow them on Twitter, he made a statement and after
- 58:13what's happened. The last two years, we have to
- 58:16visit it and basically Eric at the aircar following if you like
- 58:21Okie football tweeted. This is VT football worse today
- 58:26than it was the day. Frank Beamer retired in 2015.
- 58:29That would have been after the Independence Bowl win.
- 58:31In over. Tulsa we go seven and six.
- 58:35Our only losses by more than double digits that year or ten
- 58:39point loss to Ohio, 10 point loss, to Miami and the lost Ohio
- 58:44State opened the season. Every other loss was a touchdown
- 58:49or less. Keep going here.
- 58:56Going into the November 12th week, end of 2015.
- 59:01It was, was it four and five were four and five?
- 59:08And we go down the stretch and we win the game.
- 59:13We lose Frank's last home game in overtime to UNC and we win
- 59:16the UVA game to go. Six and six similar here with
- 59:23you. I had to look that up.
- 59:25I forgot who it was. We played the week prior to
- 59:31don't worry, I'm going to effort this real quick because I want
- 59:33to remember who we played in 2020.
- 59:40For 2015. One moment, everyone, the game
- 59:44before UNC the game for UNC, unless you have it up there.
- 59:47There we go. We beat Georgia Tech.
- 59:54We beat Georgia Tech. By two points.
- 1:00:03And let's let's let's do this. Braun okay?
- 1:00:07What you got 2015 going into 2016 verses 21 going to the 22
- 1:00:13with Talent worse or better that year in your opinion, Talent
- 1:00:18level is Mutt, was much better in 2015 heading into 16th.
- 1:00:22And it is right now, not just talent, but depth, which is as
- 1:00:27just as important is overall Talent.
- 1:00:31It's true. I agree with that.
- 1:00:32The only thing we had not ironed out was the quarterback
- 1:00:35situation do give the when they credit for that.
- 1:00:39But getting Evans in here that made that team click.
- 1:00:43Yep. Do not know if we would have
- 1:00:45went to the ACC title, gamer, won 10 games out here without
- 1:00:48drive-ins. I'm, I'd say eight, maybe seven,
- 1:00:51looking, how this coaching staff coaches.
- 1:00:53Now, So write that down, we're going now into a new regime,
- 1:00:58likely with less Talent the other big piece behind and this
- 1:01:05is big. I don't give a shit who you are
- 1:01:07what you say. Following a coaching Legends and
- 1:01:11the expectations that have been set.
- 1:01:14We're here. Yeah, we're here.
- 1:01:19Next regime. You're not following a coaching
- 1:01:22Legend, You're not found a coaching Legend.
- 1:01:25You're also, I mean, the expectations, I think in terms
- 1:01:30of where we want to be or the same, I think that out the gate,
- 1:01:34there will be a lot more leash than was given previously.
- 1:01:40And that's just because of the things we just talked about,
- 1:01:43which is the talent level and roster makeup and depth of the
- 1:01:47roster overall. We're in a situation where not
- 1:01:51It's not just finding a solution at quarterback.
- 1:01:54It's finding the solution at about three or four different
- 1:01:56positions. Yep.
- 1:01:58Pretty securely in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
- 1:02:02Very true. The quarterback is the big one
- 1:02:07though. I do think you have Luke coming
- 1:02:11back, Parker's looked better. Kate and getting the playing
- 1:02:17time this year has helped out. I don't think he's there but I
- 1:02:19think he has a potential. You do need some more depth on
- 1:02:24the line. I think it's defensive in depth
- 1:02:26on the defensive line. I feel okay about linebackers, I
- 1:02:31feel good. Oh okay about the backend on
- 1:02:33defense but it's the depth. There ain't much behind anybody
- 1:02:38so I'm with you on that, but it's the expectations.
- 1:02:41I think we as a fan base or probably going to go into this
- 1:02:44thing that first year depending on, who comes how the portal,
- 1:02:48looks who stays in the recruiting class, who we get
- 1:02:51from the transfer portal, yet portals going to absolutely be
- 1:02:56important. No matter who comes in, but it's
- 1:02:59going to be well as expectations if we're sitting here a year
- 1:03:02from tonight and you tell me where it's six wins, they have
- 1:03:05met expectations if you're telling me that with three weeks
- 1:03:09ago on the seasons, we have six wins, you've completely met my
- 1:03:11expectation as of right now, We've got to see everything that
- 1:03:17happens. Check us back in August of next
- 1:03:19year and see if I say six wins. Like I said nine this year,
- 1:03:24stupid me trusting, this coaching staff.
- 1:03:28All right Brian, let's jump on the snack, I don't necessarily
- 1:03:30trust the coaching staff. I thought I thought talent-wise
- 1:03:33on the field. We were better than at least
- 1:03:37half the teams on our on our schedule.
- 1:03:39And then we sneak one in their Sleek one or two in there, and
- 1:03:43we haven't done that. And We've played below our
- 1:03:47talent level in a lot of games and most of that from coaching
- 1:03:51decisions that are made in real time.
- 1:03:53That's very true. That's a good point to make you
- 1:03:55may be a new coach task and revitalizing the seven.
- 1:04:01The seven point loss, the three point loss in the two point loss
- 1:04:05of the four-point loss can all be flipped, all right?
- 1:04:08Brian I don't think anybody should argue about this 2015,
- 1:04:132016. We were significantly needing of
- 1:04:16upgrades. Those are rolling into effect.
- 1:04:20The new coach is going to have the new weight room.
- 1:04:23The new players with the new dorms, The increased budgets.
- 1:04:29So, Ami, that's that, this is the only area that Fuente is
- 1:04:34leaving better than he found it and he didn't do it, and he
- 1:04:38didn't really do a whole lot to get it there.
- 1:04:40But between what wit had already put on the the roadmap, plus
- 1:04:48what? In terms of recruiting and other
- 1:04:51things that, you know, Fuente was able to in terms of
- 1:04:55recruiting staff, I should say that Fuente was able to bring to
- 1:04:57the table. Post the bail.
- 1:04:59Flirtation. The combination of those two
- 1:05:02things have at least moved the conversation forward.
- 1:05:05Even if not all of the financial investments have made their
- 1:05:10their way home yet. But more than likely those are
- 1:05:14coming through in the next two to three years and hopefully
- 1:05:18some of the early big investment that's made into Reach For
- 1:05:21Excellence. Can be put towards building that
- 1:05:24recruiting staff, or hiring those offensive and defensive.
- 1:05:28Analysts to kind of move things forward for this team because
- 1:05:34that's where the, I think in terms of on-field product,
- 1:05:36that's what's going to help the most out the gate.
- 1:05:39So that and obviously, the assistant salary pool, all of
- 1:05:45that's going to be big in. That is the one thing that if
- 1:05:49anything, from this tenure, you're going to say, things will
- 1:05:52pointed out. And I think if things had, let
- 1:05:58me ask this, Ron, if 2018 didn't happen, 2018 didn't happen.
- 1:06:04And let's say, we went eight and five in 2018, we would be behind
- 1:06:08a year on all the upgrades. 2018 is going to be considered should
- 1:06:13be considered a blessing in disguise because when you have
- 1:06:17that bad of a season, after essentially the Frank run at the
- 1:06:22end, it was just Frank's just getting older, he's slowing
- 1:06:24down. Can't get the recruits.
- 1:06:26It's tougher. But after the first two years
- 1:06:30are just want to, in 2018 doesn't happen, it doesn't turn
- 1:06:33whitside to. I've got to get this shit.
- 1:06:35Straight up, gotta get this shit straight now especially in it
- 1:06:40and that there's the upside if he doesn't come do what he did.
- 1:06:45We don't move forward quicker. Yeah and and I mean, let's talk
- 1:06:50about this too because obviously the biggest issue that we're
- 1:06:54having in terms of not achieving what we want to achieve right
- 1:06:57now is Is coaching, but all these other things are playing a
- 1:07:02role and the fact that they need to be addressed, can't be
- 1:07:06understated. That being said, a good coach
- 1:07:11gets us where we need to be in spite of that.
- 1:07:13Yes. And you give them something to
- 1:07:17build upon they can they can grow into something even better.
- 1:07:21Yeah. So that's kind of where we are
- 1:07:24in this thing and then we talk about fan engagement, kind of
- 1:07:27being the last thing, comparing the two way different way,
- 1:07:33worse, way worse. Even the meddling last four
- 1:07:37years of Frank? We were still a In about 60 to
- 1:07:4161 think. I think somebody said this year,
- 1:07:46we're at like 58 maybe 50 to the X, so, 10,000 centrally to and
- 1:07:50that's after not having fans and stands for 2020 and it being a
- 1:07:55big fucking deal. The first two to three weeks
- 1:07:57that we went home. What did we say on here?
- 1:08:02We said it almost a year ago, when he was kept, you're going
- 1:08:07to see effects on the fan base. People are not going to show up
- 1:08:10and then people like, yeah, but we've been locked in a year.
- 1:08:13Yeah. And for the first few weeks,
- 1:08:15it'll be okay. Yeah, we start fucking up,
- 1:08:18you're going to see exactly what you are seeing at Syracuse.
- 1:08:23And, you know what, we're probably going to see at the new
- 1:08:25game, which is about 55 56, thousand in length.
- 1:08:29We don't want to turn into Bobby Dodd Stadium.
- 1:08:32Yeah. Do you not want to become that?
- 1:08:36And I don't think, I don't think we will either, but I think I
- 1:08:40think the point and I get that but that you talk about a team
- 1:08:44in the middle of a city. They've got other shit to do.
- 1:08:46I get that and Virginia Tech is the biggest show in the state of
- 1:08:51Virginia. I get that but hold on but you.
- 1:08:56Yep. It's the city of Richmond in
- 1:09:01Virginia Beach, in Northern Virginia.
- 1:09:05How many people are driving 3-4 hours, every Saturday.
- 1:09:10We've done it Brian and coming into Blacksburg.
- 1:09:14What you do not want to do is convince those people.
- 1:09:18I don't need to go we suck. Anyway, I'm not going to do
- 1:09:21anything. I'm not going to be engaged with
- 1:09:23the team. Yeah, give me folks from like
- 1:09:25Lynchburg and Stanton and All Points.
- 1:09:27West of that is not the hard part.
- 1:09:29It's getting getting folks from the Tidewater there, every week.
- 1:09:33Getting folks, Richmond, there every week.
- 1:09:34Getting folks from Nova there every week.
- 1:09:38And once you start losing that audience, yep.
- 1:09:42Where they might make one One game a year instead of five
- 1:09:45where they might not make a game this year, because they'll get
- 1:09:49it next year, when the teams looking better.
- 1:09:51Yeah. Whatever it may be.
- 1:09:53That that's when you're going to be in trouble.
- 1:09:55And I think it's, we're already starting to see some of that
- 1:09:58creeping in what we say. And it's not, it's not just,
- 1:10:04I'll say this, we've seen it as we have progressed week-to-week,
- 1:10:09based on the podcast, true. It's drink them.
- 1:10:14The more folks are. We are engaged at the beginning
- 1:10:17of the year when things still look pretty.
- 1:10:20Yeah, it started to trickle away there is.
- 1:10:24Apathy said to him, we see it. I mean that that's one metric.
- 1:10:27You look at the metric of folks showing up in the stands.
- 1:10:30There's several different metrics that point to the fan
- 1:10:34base is losing interest in watching a losing product on the
- 1:10:37field. And you can only sell hope for
- 1:10:42so long into the season every year before it starts going back
- 1:10:47to. Oh, okay, this is that same
- 1:10:49team. We saw last year that chokes
- 1:10:51these games away. This is the same team that
- 1:10:53doesn't quite, get it done because the coaching staff
- 1:10:56doesn't have them prepared properly on.
- 1:10:58Ask you a question, right? And be very serious about this,
- 1:11:01if a change is made last year, but we're sitting at exactly the
- 1:11:04same record this year. You want to thank engagement.
- 1:11:07Still wouldn't be up. I mean, yeah, you're going to
- 1:11:11get a honeymoon period obviously with the new coach especially if
- 1:11:13that new coaches coming in and actually engaging the fans in a
- 1:11:17way that they are used to historically, but we're also
- 1:11:21going to be sitting here and saying he had to clean up the
- 1:11:24absolute dumpster fire. That was yeah again you get you
- 1:11:28get morally, she get the honeymoon period.
- 1:11:30There's going to be a period of time where we are giving the new
- 1:11:34coach the benefit of the doubt. And hopefully that he's earning
- 1:11:37it because that's one thing that I will say.
- 1:11:39To Fuente is that he doesn't get the bit of the benefit of the
- 1:11:43doubt because he'd never tried to earn it in terms of fan
- 1:11:47engagement. Nope, never did.
- 1:11:49If you keep that shit, so close to your chest that people don't
- 1:11:52know what to think, they are going to write their own
- 1:11:54narrative. And if you let that go for long
- 1:11:56enough, it's going to become a problem.
- 1:12:00And they're going to give you the big finger and say, I don't
- 1:12:03need to waste my money. I'll need to come see, I want to
- 1:12:05know about my program. I want to know about players, I
- 1:12:07don't know about what's going on.
- 1:12:09We this is college football. This is not the NFL and they
- 1:12:13can't be that tight lipped. So you know, next guy think
- 1:12:18about it in for the next coach to.
- 1:12:23There are numerous Coca-Cola events every year.
- 1:12:28Their enrichment, Oddworld, all over the place, my advice to
- 1:12:31you. When there's a recruit night in
- 1:12:33Richmond, go to, when there's recruit night in title or go to
- 1:12:36it, Nova, go to it. They always show up for the
- 1:12:40kickoff dinners. That's fine and dandy if there's
- 1:12:43other events, create other events, keep engaging.
- 1:12:46Send your assistant. Coaches are two talks in players
- 1:12:49to talk. That's what's going to get us
- 1:12:52back. All right.
- 1:12:54Getting getting those coaches back in the high schools,
- 1:12:56consistently is going to help to you.
- 1:12:58Damn right. It is so, you know, again, shout
- 1:13:02out to Eric for saying to that. And let's just, let's just say
- 1:13:04it. I think we're not significantly,
- 1:13:07lower than where we were. I don't think we're this far in
- 1:13:102016, or from 2015. I do think we're probably about
- 1:13:14a step and a half back of where we were.
- 1:13:19We're not where we were 2015, but we're not in the dumpster.
- 1:13:24We're just a little bit down. We're a more attractive program
- 1:13:28financially than we were in 2015, heading into 16.
- 1:13:32But probably by every other measurable metric.
- 1:13:35We are at least a step behind, if not more and opinion.
- 1:13:42Makes sense. So again, we both kind of agree
- 1:13:45that we aren't where we were. We're lower.
- 1:13:48But knowing this fan base. Knowing the potential donors out
- 1:13:54there knowing that how they're setting the money up.
- 1:13:58If the next guy gets it Roland The things can happen, quicker.
- 1:14:03Big time. All right.
- 1:14:04Anytime Brian, let's roll into this Saturday.
- 1:14:07Pick them's. Braun 5 & 5 this week.
- 1:14:13Okay. What can you do?
- 1:14:14The coin? Flip GT Miami is what burn me?
- 1:14:20Of course it did. What's GTA in 73?
- 1:14:25This week? Both got wake wrong, both got
- 1:14:29pit, right? If you put twenty eight and a
- 1:14:31half, like I said, sorry you lost your money.
- 1:14:34I was all 53 juice for a heck of a lot more than I thought.
- 1:14:38They would GT Miami. I know you had to be angry at
- 1:14:44points in that game, right? Our it just like just put these
- 1:14:47guys away. Yeah.
- 1:14:49Please and they didn't find me one.
- 1:14:52It was close. Close!
- 1:14:54Close NC State easily. Handled FSU.
- 1:15:00They won by two touchdowns so that line was we taught that
- 1:15:04line smelly right? Yep.
- 1:15:06Yep. And you know, next one up
- 1:15:08Clemson, not quite the dramatic backdoor cover that they had
- 1:15:12last week but they got it late again.
- 1:15:15They did it again. We both whiffed on the Kentucky,
- 1:15:21Tennessee game. Yeah, shout out him and hooker.
- 1:15:24You took care of business, man, and I know there was a couple
- 1:15:27questionable calls and no calls at the end of that one, that
- 1:15:30made a controversial, but 8, shout out to Hendon hooker.
- 1:15:35Great job. Biggest upset of the week,
- 1:15:39Brian. Told ya that you got me on that
- 1:15:43one too, man. Heard you upsetting Michigan
- 1:15:47State? I don't we upsetting, they sort
- 1:15:49of ran away from them. And again, you know, Purdue
- 1:15:56playing a top five. Team is different than Purdue
- 1:15:58playing literally any other opponent dangerous, very
- 1:16:01dangerous. I like Jeff brohm, I like Jeff
- 1:16:06brohm a lot. As a coach doesn't have the best
- 1:16:10recruiting Style. But he's also at Purdue.
- 1:16:15So, if you ask me what I like him to be the next head coach of
- 1:16:19yes, but he's got to make his staff full of Ace recruiters.
- 1:16:23I think he's a great X's and O's guy but we'll see his bio.
- 1:16:27I'm here in his files, very high, probably some yes, like 7
- 1:16:31million. Yeah, really high.
- 1:16:35Washington, Oregon, Washington made it interesting for a long
- 1:16:41time in that game on Saturday night, or you eventually puts
- 1:16:44them away, You know what, Oregon's just like that team
- 1:16:50that if it's somebody that's below them they are similar to
- 1:16:55us. It's like they turn off certain
- 1:16:58gears. Yeah and lucky with them they
- 1:17:01have some Talent. They can turn it back on and
- 1:17:04pull away at the end but you know you see Washington.
- 1:17:10Let go of half their offensive staff.
- 1:17:14Jenny Lake Champlain, Jimmy like going to get fired.
- 1:17:17Yeah, well Jimmy Lake knows what Justin Fuente.
- 1:17:21Doesn't that exactly if shit goes south, get rid of somebody
- 1:17:25to buy you a little bit of time? See if you can right the ship it
- 1:17:28is this is his second year so you know after having a I think
- 1:17:32they'd at least solid last year and he's got a little leeway
- 1:17:37there Ole Miss. Yeah I think he's underachieving
- 1:17:42relative to the keys he was handed and that's that's why
- 1:17:45people are getting antsy. See.
- 1:17:50And I think that that mean you, you were essentially coming off
- 1:17:53a trip to the college football playoff with the previous regime
- 1:17:59and now, all of a sudden here. We are exactly Ole Miss handles
- 1:18:04Liberty. In the Hugh, freeze bowl.
- 1:18:07That game was over at halftime. I don't, I think Ole Miss did
- 1:18:10nothing but Lane when ton lane lane ran the ball in the second
- 1:18:14half, cut the game in half and essentially didn't give Liberty
- 1:18:17a chance to come back later. Down, they won by 13.
- 1:18:21I think we said they wind up. Well, I think we both said 14,
- 1:18:24we were one point off on that one and the biggest game of the
- 1:18:28day we completely screwed up completely.
- 1:18:33But now am's winning, the other thing was Arkansas.
- 1:18:39Beat Mississippi State, Arkansas is going to get ranked this
- 1:18:41week. Mississippi state's going to get
- 1:18:42ring unranked this week, but Alabama's going to have multiple
- 1:18:46wins over multiple ranked teams, just all the way it's going to
- 1:18:49look. They're going to continue to
- 1:18:51climb any other game that culture out of this weekend.
- 1:18:54Braun trying to think of any other ones.
- 1:19:00That was that I watched that wasn't on this list.
- 1:19:02That I was keeping tabs of most of the ones we had we had
- 1:19:06picked. So always, I can't think of
- 1:19:08anything off the top that really caught my eye.
- 1:19:11What about you? You've won Ohio State and
- 1:19:14Nebraska was Was interesting. There's one more that was that
- 1:19:20in my poor cousin from Charleston, didn't get to go.
- 1:19:25I know where you're heading with this one, by his sons and
- 1:19:27offensive linemen, they have a state playoff game, and he hurt
- 1:19:31his leg. He was going to go to Florida,
- 1:19:34South Carolina and he didn't get to go.
- 1:19:36And he missed chain Beamer. Absolutely walking the dog on
- 1:19:41Dan Mullen, I like Dan Mullen. I just don't think Dan Mullen to
- 1:19:45fit for Florida. Shane gets really his first big
- 1:19:49win and, you know, a lot of people crying, we should have
- 1:19:56hired chain. Like, you know, Shane would have
- 1:20:00been a no-lose situation. Even if he comes back in 10
- 1:20:03years, it's still a no-lose situation or a no-win situation
- 1:20:06for Shane. Hey, what do I need to do here?
- 1:20:09You need to win a National Title.
- 1:20:11Your dad, got this close you need to win at 0-0 and you need
- 1:20:15to win like Ten Conference titles.
- 1:20:20Yay. What else?
- 1:20:24Number one. Picks need to do a couple more
- 1:20:26of those. What else?
- 1:20:29You know that's it. Yeah.
- 1:20:34Have one of the best 30-year runs of all time, you didn't win
- 1:20:45a National Title and all this. He never had top 10 Talent
- 1:20:50across the board. Consistently, if Frank Beamer
- 1:20:53Has top-10 Talent across the board, consistently for his Run,
- 1:20:57Frank has three rings. That's my opinion.
- 1:21:01Pride anything breaking other than it has a nice finish to the
- 1:21:06football game here. I think we're good to go buddy.
- 1:21:10All right. Well, that is going to wrap up
