- 0:02Speaker 1: F T Spring Training Tour. Don't cry.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Last day in Arizona, Kip's dancing, Kratz is dancing.
- 0:10Speaker 1: That's it. Then we're moving to Florida.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Kip, it just felt so short with you, So let's
- 0:14Speaker 2: cherish these next couple of hours.
- 0:19Speaker 3: You're not short. You're in Giants Camp. You're like you're
- 0:22Speaker 3: a giant short.
- 0:24Speaker 4: It felt short. He did not say I was short.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You know it's going to be like, this is how you.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Want to start the show, Eric, I want to start
- 0:31Speaker 4: the show.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Mm hmmm.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let me get a sponsor in the way to break
- 0:35Speaker 2: this up for now. So the Spring Training Tour is
- 0:38Speaker 2: engineered by Fast and All. We love them dearly and
- 0:41Speaker 2: they also help us to lay out a calendar. We're organized.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Check them more info at fastnall dot com. And we
- 0:47Speaker 2: love their vending machines, among other things. So we knocked
- 0:51Speaker 2: out a couple of weeks just now in Arizona. By
- 0:53Speaker 2: the time we get done today with Giants Camp, and
- 0:56Speaker 2: we're excited to talk to their manager, Tony Botello. We're
- 0:59Speaker 2: expecting Logan Web, We're expecting Ron Washington. It's going to
- 1:03Speaker 2: be a fun day. And also, I would just like
- 1:07Speaker 2: to point out that I am wearing the Splashit Territory
- 1:11Speaker 2: shirt today.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Here it is. I made the mistake yesterday of.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Wearing Snake's territory over the weekend and then just didn't
- 1:19Speaker 2: have it in time, So sorry dbacks fans. But today
- 1:22Speaker 2: I actually did get to model the splash Hit shirt
- 1:25Speaker 2: and I love it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It's really fun and it's a shirt.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Did you do before showing that right right before we
- 1:30Speaker 4: went on air?
- 1:31Speaker 2: Dude, I am gassed hundreds to try and get myself
- 1:36Speaker 2: for my one big moment on the show. I'm mostly
- 1:39Speaker 2: going to stay out of the way.
- 1:42Speaker 4: That's some.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Good call out.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Oh, I also want to remind everyone about this. Then
- 1:49Speaker 2: we'll get to Ken. The show is changing times next week.
- 1:53Speaker 2: We do this every year. We're doing it again. FT
- 1:56Speaker 2: is live eleven a m Eastern Time starting on Monday.
- 1:59Speaker 2: You can still catch the show later do whatever you
- 2:01Speaker 2: want to do. Obviously, it just won't be live. So
- 2:03Speaker 2: eleven am. We are live for the next few weeks
- 2:06Speaker 2: when we're running through Florida because their games start at
- 2:09Speaker 2: one and we want to get as many players as possible.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Now let's get to Ken.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's the Inside Scoop and it's engineered by Fastenall where
- 2:22Speaker 2: industry meets innovation.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It's efty.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Senior insider Ken Rosenthal with us right now. Can I
- 2:26Speaker 2: want to start with your article on Connor Griffin the
- 2:29Speaker 2: super prospect, the top prospect in baseball, and we can
- 2:32Speaker 2: get into him as a player, but first I want
- 2:34Speaker 2: to go the spicy route. You mentioned how the Pirates
- 2:38Speaker 2: maybe mishandled their situation with Paul Skeins. Can you get
- 2:43Speaker 2: into that. Does it have as much to do with
- 2:45Speaker 2: when to call the player up versus also making sure
- 2:47Speaker 2: it's a small market team that you take advantage of
- 2:50Speaker 2: potentially getting a draft pick with someone like Connor Griffin too, right.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Yes, And I actually wouldn't say the Pirates mishandled the
- 2:58Speaker 5: skiing situation. It was understanding at the time he didn't
- 3:02Speaker 5: have much minor league experience at all. They wanted to
- 3:04Speaker 5: polish off his development. Obviously, in retrospect, it looks like
- 3:07Speaker 5: he was ready to pitch the major leagues. I don't
- 3:09Speaker 5: know two years ago, three years ago, even before it
- 3:12Speaker 5: was in the major leagues. But what happened was they
- 3:14Speaker 5: didn't call him up until May eleventh, so they didn't
- 3:17Speaker 5: get the chance to receive a draft pick at the
- 3:20Speaker 5: end when he won Rookie Year of the Year because
- 3:24Speaker 5: he was called up too late. Under that Prospect Promotion
- 3:27Speaker 5: Incentive program, the guy has to be in the big
- 3:30Speaker 5: leagues within the first two weeks of the season and
- 3:32Speaker 5: then spend the entire season in the majors. That didn't
- 3:35Speaker 5: happen with Skeins. And then at the end, and I
- 3:37Speaker 5: wrote about this at the time, they didn't shut him down.
- 3:40Speaker 5: They didn't try to prevent him from winning Rookie of
- 3:43Speaker 5: the Year because at the end of this they got
- 3:46Speaker 5: kind of nailed another way. Once he won that award,
- 3:51Speaker 5: he gained a full year of service time under another
- 3:54Speaker 5: provision in the CBA, So he gets the full year
- 3:57Speaker 5: of service time, which of course costs the Pirates a
- 3:59Speaker 5: year of Paul's skins, and he doesn't get them a
- 4:02Speaker 5: draft pick. So how does this apply to Connor Griffin?
- 4:05Speaker 5: As Ben Sherington, their general manager, told me, two different players,
- 4:08Speaker 5: two different people. Griffin is a high school kid. Skins,
- 4:12Speaker 5: of course, pitched three years in college. It's much different.
- 4:16Speaker 5: But at the same time, Connor Griffin is a kid
- 4:19Speaker 5: that looks like I know it's early in spring training,
- 4:23Speaker 5: but This goes back to last season as well, when
- 4:25Speaker 5: he was in the miners going through three levels. He
- 4:27Speaker 5: looks like the kind of teenage prospect that can make
- 4:30Speaker 5: an impact in the major leagues right away. We don't
- 4:33Speaker 5: want to get ahead of ourselves, but everything you hear
- 4:35Speaker 5: about him, everything we've seen so far indicates that. And
- 4:39Speaker 5: the other element with the Pirates is if he's not
- 4:42Speaker 5: the shortstop, then who is. It's probably Nick Gonzas or
- 4:46Speaker 5: Jared Triolo. These are unproven players in their own right.
- 4:50Speaker 5: So if the Pirates truly believe they have a unicorn here,
- 4:53Speaker 5: another unicorn, a second unicorn, maybe it will behoove them
- 4:58Speaker 5: to open the season with Griffin as their shortstop.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I do want to get ahead of myself and I
- 5:03Speaker 3: want to see him in the big leagues. But what
- 5:05Speaker 3: do you feel or what did you hear from Ben
- 5:07Speaker 3: Charrington as the stumbling block for him to get to
- 5:11Speaker 3: the big leagues, because when there used to be playf
- 5:15Speaker 3: service time manipulation. You know, Chris Brian had a few
- 5:18Speaker 3: heirs in the minor leagues, so we need to keep
- 5:20Speaker 3: him down, you know. That's what all these rules that
- 5:23Speaker 3: Ken just brought out are not in the way but
- 5:25Speaker 3: what is Ben Charrington saying the organization he's just young. Well,
- 5:29Speaker 3: everybody's younger than somebody.
- 5:33Speaker 5: The concern is that he is nineteen turning twenty. I
- 5:36Speaker 5: believe in May and then he's young and that you
- 5:39Speaker 5: want to protect him. You want to give him the
- 5:41Speaker 5: full chance to develop into the player you expect him
- 5:46Speaker 5: to be. Eric It's a legitimate concern. Kids nineteen years old.
- 5:51Speaker 5: He hasn't experienced much. He's two years out of high school.
- 5:54Speaker 5: It's kind of crazy if you think about it. But
- 5:57Speaker 5: at the same time, in the minor leagues right now,
- 6:00Speaker 5: development is different than it was in the past. They
- 6:03Speaker 5: play six game series in one city. They don't travel
- 6:07Speaker 5: like they do in the major leagues. They have a
- 6:09Speaker 5: day off on Monday. Most players get another scheduled day off,
- 6:13Speaker 5: so they're not necessarily ready for the riggers of the
- 6:15Speaker 5: major leagues, even if you'll leave them down there. It's
- 6:17Speaker 5: a different world. So from that perspective, it seems to
- 6:22Speaker 5: me that when you're in the Pirates position, when you
- 6:25Speaker 5: have a player who may I said, may transform your
- 6:30Speaker 5: franchise like Skeens, did you take that shot? And there's
- 6:34Speaker 5: no guarantee of success. Mike Trout came up to the
- 6:37Speaker 5: major leagues, I believe a twenty, sent back to the miners,
- 6:40Speaker 5: and of course then became one of the great players
- 6:42Speaker 5: of this generation. You never know what's going to happen.
- 6:45Speaker 5: No one knows for sure, but everything you hear about
- 6:48Speaker 5: this player from teammates and opponents alike, not only is
- 6:53Speaker 5: he incredibly gifted physically, he's big, he looks like a
- 6:57Speaker 5: young Cal ripkn but he has a good head on
- 6:59Speaker 5: his shoulder, the great instincts for the game. It seems
- 7:02Speaker 5: like he's the kind of person and Tony Beasley, the Pirates,
- 7:05Speaker 5: your third base coach, mentioned this to me in the article.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Seems like the kind of kid who can withstand whatever's
- 7:12Speaker 5: going to come his way.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And Ken, that's where I want to finish on this topic.
- 7:17Speaker 2: When you say he's got a good head on his shoulders,
- 7:19Speaker 2: and you can point to some superstars thriving from the
- 7:23Speaker 2: jump and others like Mike Trout needing a nice little
- 7:26Speaker 2: pop back down, and then he comes up and he's
- 7:28Speaker 2: a superstar. I don't really see any world where they
- 7:31Speaker 2: don't have him on the opening day roster. His upside
- 7:34Speaker 2: from day one is so significant and so much higher
- 7:38Speaker 2: than anything else that they put out there. And this
- 7:40Speaker 2: does feel like and this is where I'll relate the
- 7:42Speaker 2: question a make or break it year for the Pirates
- 7:45Speaker 2: for ben Cherrington. So percentage chance in your mind that
- 7:48Speaker 2: he does start on the opening day roster as long
- 7:50Speaker 2: as he's healthy. I don't even really care about much
- 7:53Speaker 2: of the spring results, because there can be some bad
- 7:55Speaker 2: at ballock and all of that. I've got enough for
- 7:58Speaker 2: me to say, let's see what it looks like. If
- 8:00Speaker 2: in a few weeks he's you know, three for thirty whatever,
- 8:04Speaker 2: then you can always send him down and bring him
- 8:06Speaker 2: back up.
- 8:06Speaker 1: So what do you think, Scott, I'm with you.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Percentage chance would be hard to assess. I would say
- 8:11Speaker 5: seventy five percent, and that's just an estimated. It's a guess.
- 8:15Speaker 5: It's not coming with any knowledge of what they're thinking.
- 8:18Speaker 5: It just seems to me that there's a ton of
- 8:19Speaker 5: momentum for this. And as you said, when you step
- 8:22Speaker 5: back as the Pittsburgh Pirates and it is something of
- 8:26Speaker 5: a make or break year. Every year with Skenes is
- 8:29Speaker 5: going to be a make or break year because you're
- 8:30Speaker 5: not going to have him forever. So yes, they have
- 8:34Speaker 5: to push forward now and they have done some things
- 8:37Speaker 5: this offseason which we're quite encouraging as far as getting
- 8:40Speaker 5: back to be a competitive team. I'm talking about the
- 8:43Speaker 5: trade for Brandon Lao and Jake Mangum. I'm talking, of
- 8:46Speaker 5: course about the signings of Ryan O'Hearn and Marcella Zuna.
- 8:50Speaker 5: You're doing that, you're trying to win. In the past,
- 8:53Speaker 5: the Pirates weren't necessarily trying to win. So if you're
- 8:55Speaker 5: trying to win, you have to assess the whole picture.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Who gives us the best chance to possibly make the playoffs,
- 9:03Speaker 5: be a dark horse team in that regard, And if
- 9:06Speaker 5: we did this with Connor Griffin, if it goes badly,
- 9:10Speaker 5: what's the end result? What is the worst case scenario?
- 9:14Speaker 5: And the worst case scenario is just what you mentioned, Scott.
- 9:16Speaker 5: You send them back to the miners and at some
- 9:18Speaker 5: point he'll be ready to go.
- 9:21Speaker 2: The number one rated ticketing app is seat geek, and
- 9:25Speaker 2: you can get ten percent off on Sea geeks app
- 9:27Speaker 2: by using the code territory ten, So you should use it.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Aj Oh I'm definitely going to use it for WBC
- 9:33Speaker 3: games in Miami because I want to go to the
- 9:35Speaker 3: semifinals in the finals.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And they're going to be sold out.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Absolutely spring training games for the people out there who
- 9:40Speaker 3: want to go to spring training games. Absolutely great idea,
- 9:42Speaker 3: best seats Radar one through ten. And I recently had
- 9:44Speaker 3: to use SeatGeek to buy tickets to a Florida Gators
- 9:46Speaker 3: basketball game that was sold out. So I love the
- 9:49Speaker 3: code Territory ten percent off and the rating is the best.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yes, he's talking about each ticket rated on a scale
- 9:55Speaker 2: of one to ten, so you know you're getting a
- 9:56Speaker 2: good deal. So look for the green dots. Green means good,
- 9:59Speaker 2: red means bad. And of course we have a code
- 10:01Speaker 2: for you. Like I mentioned, it's Territory ten for ten
- 10:05Speaker 2: percent off your next set of tickets at sea Geek.
- 10:07Speaker 2: That's ten percent off any tickets with promo code t
- 10:11Speaker 2: E R R I t O R Y one zero.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Make sure you click the link in the description and
- 10:15Speaker 2: download the app and have the code automatically added to
- 10:18Speaker 2: your account so you can use it later.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Thank you to see geek.
- 10:23Speaker 4: There's free agent years where you're motivated to play better
- 10:26Speaker 4: and you have a lot of things going for you
- 10:28Speaker 4: that get you locked in the day. What has been
- 10:29Speaker 4: the story with him and dealing with all these trade rumors.
- 10:32Speaker 4: We know they try to sign Boba Schett. What can
- 10:35Speaker 4: you tell us about this and how he's mental game
- 10:37Speaker 4: spent kind of keeping up with his game on the
- 10:39Speaker 4: field at Phillies.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Jason I found it really interesting talking to him. He
- 10:44Speaker 5: says he was not bothered at all by any of this.
- 10:46Speaker 5: It's been two off seasons of trade rumors for Alec
- 10:49Speaker 5: Boem and he basically said he understands it's a business.
- 10:53Speaker 5: He doesn't take it personally. He doesn't stress over it,
- 10:56Speaker 5: doesn't sweat it. It only becomes a topic when people
- 10:59Speaker 5: come up to him constantly and say, hey, man, where
- 11:02Speaker 5: are you getting traded to? And to that he said,
- 11:04Speaker 5: I know as much as anyone reading on the internet.
- 11:07Speaker 5: So the Bashette one was I would say, the closest
- 11:11Speaker 5: call yet for Alec Boulm. I can't imagine they would
- 11:13Speaker 5: not have traded him if Bashett had indeed signed with
- 11:17Speaker 5: the Phillies. But Bishett did not sign with the Phillies.
- 11:19Speaker 5: So here's Alec Boum back for more his free agent year.
- 11:23Speaker 5: And he's a guy that has been down on himself
- 11:26Speaker 5: at times emotionally. You could see his frustration in his
- 11:30Speaker 5: body language and just the way he conducts himself on
- 11:32Speaker 5: the field. But he's gotten better with that, according to
- 11:36Speaker 5: one of the Phillies coaches, Bobby Dickerson, the infield coach,
- 11:38Speaker 5: and it just seems to me that his head is
- 11:42Speaker 5: also in the right place.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Here's a guy that he was a.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Number three pick overall in the draft. I don't know
- 11:48Speaker 5: that he's had the kind of career that a number
- 11:50Speaker 5: three overall pick should have, but he's had a good
- 11:53Speaker 5: career and he's gonna be batting cleanup most likely for
- 11:56Speaker 5: the Phillies behind Turner, Shober and Harper. He must be
- 12:00Speaker 5: pretty good because he's going to be doing that. So
- 12:03Speaker 5: he kind of is at a place where he knows
- 12:06Speaker 5: where he's at. He gets it, and he gets everything
- 12:08Speaker 5: around him, and in his mind, he just wants to
- 12:11Speaker 5: keep improving as a player, and obviously as he gets
- 12:14Speaker 5: closer to free agency, then the choices will come his way.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Does it seem like he would like to go back
- 12:20Speaker 3: to the Phillies or does it seem like when you
- 12:22Speaker 3: talked about the last two off seasons, it's like, I'm
- 12:26Speaker 3: just gonna be done with this organization because somebody was
- 12:30Speaker 3: trying to get me out of here. Don't know who
- 12:31Speaker 3: it was, but did it seem like he was open
- 12:34Speaker 3: to a reunion.
- 12:36Speaker 5: I would imagine he's open to it. Actually didn't bring
- 12:39Speaker 5: this up with him, Eric, But the reality of the
- 12:41Speaker 5: situation for him is the Phillies have a prospect named
- 12:44Speaker 5: Aidan Miller. They want him to play, and if Bishett
- 12:48Speaker 5: had signed with the Phillies, the likely scenario is that
- 12:51Speaker 5: Bashett would have played third for one year, then vacated
- 12:54Speaker 5: third for Aiden Miller, and they would have moved Bashett
- 12:57Speaker 5: the second, possibly traded Bryce in stot. There were a
- 13:00Speaker 5: couple of different ways, of course they could have gone.
- 13:02Speaker 5: So the writing is on the wall. So to speak
- 13:05Speaker 5: for Alec Bouman Philadelphia, I would guess he knows it,
- 13:10Speaker 5: and that's okay. A lot of times, you guys hear this.
- 13:13Speaker 5: You heard it in your careers early and when you
- 13:15Speaker 5: were in the minors. We hear it all the time.
- 13:17Speaker 5: You're not just playing for your team, you're playing for
- 13:19Speaker 5: the twenty nine others as well. And someone's going to
- 13:22Speaker 5: take an Alec Bohm in free agency and it'll all
- 13:25Speaker 5: work out as it's supposed to work out. But I
- 13:28Speaker 5: would be surprised if it worked out in Philadelphia. Shocked
- 13:31Speaker 5: actually did.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Through the conversation that you had with him. Did he
- 13:35Speaker 3: feel like he was treated fairly through his entire time,
- 13:38Speaker 3: because early on it was about the oh, I hate
- 13:41Speaker 3: this freaking place. Then it was his maturity towards the
- 13:45Speaker 3: end of the season getting bench for a playoff game.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Does he feel like he was treated fairly?
- 13:50Speaker 5: He does not feel like he was treated unfairly, I'll put.
- 13:53Speaker 6: It that way, okay.
- 13:54Speaker 5: And the incident with I hate this place, that was
- 13:58Speaker 5: something he owned right away after the game that night
- 14:02Speaker 5: and the next day, if you remember, you got a
- 14:03Speaker 5: standing ovation and the benching. In twenty twenty four in
- 14:06Speaker 5: the division series, we didn't go through all of these
- 14:09Speaker 5: incidents again, but that was because manager of Rob Thompson
- 14:14Speaker 5: wanted more energy and he thought Edmundo Sosa would bring
- 14:17Speaker 5: more energy. It seems to me that Bowman has learned
- 14:20Speaker 5: from all of this, and as Dickerson said, he's kind
- 14:23Speaker 5: of matured in many ways. So when he talked about
- 14:28Speaker 5: the trade rumors in particular, he did not hold a grudge,
- 14:31Speaker 5: and it just doesn't seem to me he's the kind
- 14:33Speaker 5: of guy that thinks like that. He's like this is
- 14:36Speaker 5: a business and this is the way it goes in
- 14:38Speaker 5: the game, and he understands that.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Now, ken you're at the Tiger's camp today, right, Yes,
- 14:44Speaker 4: What's what's going on over there? What can you tell
- 14:45Speaker 4: us about that organization? How they're going to take the
- 14:47Speaker 4: next step after the way they finished the last season.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Jason, there's a lot of excitement here, and I know
- 14:51Speaker 5: there's a lot of excitement in all thirty camps, but
- 14:54Speaker 5: here they brought it in from Bervaldez. They brought back
- 14:58Speaker 5: Justin Verlander, and they've got Kenley Jansen to anchor the bullpens. So,
- 15:02Speaker 5: as one of their people put it to me this morning,
- 15:04Speaker 5: they have some adults in the room now. And it's
- 15:06Speaker 5: not that they didn't before, but this was a very
- 15:09Speaker 5: young team and they needed, in my view, some veteran
- 15:13Speaker 5: presence that the type that they kind of brought in.
- 15:16Speaker 5: So I expect them to be really good. They play,
- 15:19Speaker 5: of course in the al Central. No disrespect, Jason to
- 15:22Speaker 5: your roots.
- 15:22Speaker 4: But your next words wisely can choose your next words wisely.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Maybe not the struggles. So they feel really good about
- 15:31Speaker 5: their chances, and not only do they feel good about
- 15:33Speaker 5: their chances of winning the division. But on paper, this
- 15:37Speaker 5: is a team that you can see possibly getting to
- 15:41Speaker 5: the World Series. And the reason I say that, actually
- 15:44Speaker 5: there are multiple reasons. One the veterans I just mentioned.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Of course, their starting pitching depth is pretty good, even
- 15:50Speaker 5: with Troy Melton now being behind. They have Jackson Joe
- 15:54Speaker 5: potentially coming back in August. And in addition to that
- 15:58Speaker 5: that depth, they have a the position talent that we're
- 16:01Speaker 5: gonna see most likely at some point with their rookie
- 16:04Speaker 5: Kevin McGonagall, who might be the number two prospect in
- 16:07Speaker 5: the sport behind Connor Griffin. He's gonna be here and
- 16:12Speaker 5: Max Clark he might be here too at some point.
- 16:14Speaker 5: He's a top ten prospect as well in the sport.
- 16:17Speaker 5: So once that happens, then maybe they have a little
- 16:22Speaker 5: bit more offensive oomph. And it's a team you still
- 16:24Speaker 5: look at offensively and say, Okay, it's pretty good Riley
- 16:27Speaker 5: Green and good player Torkles and all that. But if
- 16:30Speaker 5: they get the kind of injection of energy and talent
- 16:33Speaker 5: and skill from a guy like McGonagall, that could transform
- 16:38Speaker 5: them too. And that's why I'm pretty excited about them
- 16:41Speaker 5: this year. They have a lot going on in good ways.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Can you saved yourself. I was gonna say, you need
- 16:47Speaker 3: to name all the pitchers you just named and say
- 16:49Speaker 3: how many hits did they get last year, because this
- 16:52Speaker 3: team would still be playing in the final game of
- 16:55Speaker 3: their season because they still haven't scored a run. And
- 16:58Speaker 3: to me, if you're saying this organization has a possible
- 17:02Speaker 3: influx of Max Clark and Kevin McGonagall, two impact big
- 17:06Speaker 3: league hitters, the issue of the last two seasons, yes
- 17:10Speaker 3: it's been offense, and yes they made some strides early
- 17:13Speaker 3: last year, it's been about more like immature at bats,
- 17:18Speaker 3: more like young at bats. Do they have a plan
- 17:22Speaker 3: to combat that? Since they spent zero money and I
- 17:24Speaker 3: don't include labor Torres as any money. He was on
- 17:27Speaker 3: the team last year a qualifying offer. But because they
- 17:31Speaker 3: spent that, do they have an ability to change that narrative?
- 17:36Speaker 5: They do, and it would come from within. They feel
- 17:39Speaker 5: that some of the younger players Green is a good example,
- 17:42Speaker 5: are going to continue to mature and evolve as hitters,
- 17:45Speaker 5: and you would actually expect out of them, of course.
- 17:48Speaker 5: But I can see Eric at the deadline just kind
- 17:52Speaker 5: of the scenario playing out the way you envision, which
- 17:55Speaker 5: is they still need a bat and maybe some of
- 17:58Speaker 5: their young players besides Toorkles and maybe it's Cole Keith,
- 18:02Speaker 5: who knows, Maybe they emerge. The guys were in the
- 18:04Speaker 5: big leagues already. Matt Vierling is back, he will help.
- 18:07Speaker 5: But in my view, they still need some kind of
- 18:12Speaker 5: offensive elevation. Put it that way, and now maybe it
- 18:15Speaker 5: comes from McGonagall and or Clark, maybe it comes at
- 18:18Speaker 5: some point from an outside edition. They're going to see
- 18:21Speaker 5: how that plays out, obviously, and then if they have
- 18:24Speaker 5: to adjust to the deadline, then given what they've assembled here,
- 18:27Speaker 5: they absolutely should.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Ken enjoy your Florida camp tour. We will hear from
- 18:33Speaker 2: you on Monday on fair.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Sounds great, Thanks guys.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 18:37Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 18:40Speaker 3: That's what he said.
- 18:41Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 18:45Speaker 2: We've got some good ones today, Yeah, a number of
- 18:47Speaker 2: That's what he said. Clips that we're going to throw
- 18:49Speaker 2: your way from the FT Network. Yes, Kratz has shaking
- 18:53Speaker 2: his head. Got some good guests on this week, and
- 18:56Speaker 2: we want to make sure we highlight that and react
- 18:57Speaker 2: to some of the comments.
- 18:59Speaker 1: So let's art with Joe Musgrove.
- 19:01Speaker 2: We can't get to every camp in Arizona, so Friar
- 19:04Speaker 2: Territory is handling some interviews. They spoke to Musgrove, who's
- 19:07Speaker 2: looking to put together a full, healthy season here for
- 19:10Speaker 2: the Padres and they sure need him.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Here's what he said.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Did you try to put more pressure on yourself to
- 19:15Speaker 5: come back because of what other guys in your rotation
- 19:18Speaker 5: were going through?
- 19:23Speaker 6: Not so much. Not so much for that reason. I
- 19:25Speaker 6: mean maybe a little bit of it, maybe, like subconsciously,
- 19:27Speaker 6: I felt like that was part of my job, was to,
- 19:29Speaker 6: you know, step up and fill that role, and I
- 19:31Speaker 6: think a lot of people were kind of counting on me.
- 19:33Speaker 6: And it's hard because, I guess, back to your last question,
- 19:35Speaker 6: one of the hardest things is having people constantly ask
- 19:39Speaker 6: you, you know, how you feeling, Are you going to be back?
- 19:41Speaker 6: Are you going to be ready? And trying to answer that. Honestly,
- 19:44Speaker 6: it was very hard because if I was honest, I
- 19:46Speaker 6: wasn't be like, hell, no, I feel like shit, you know,
- 19:49Speaker 6: but maybe I won't feel like shit in a week,
- 19:51Speaker 6: maybe I'll feel better in a month, But just kind
- 19:53Speaker 6: of lying to people and be like, yeah, I feel good.
- 19:55Speaker 7: You know, I'm in a good spot.
- 19:56Speaker 6: You know, stuff's coming out and my bullpens were good,
- 19:58Speaker 6: but it was the recovery wasn't bouncing back from those
- 20:01Speaker 6: feeling very good. So trying to be honest with people
- 20:05Speaker 6: was very difficult. But yeah, towards the end of the stretch,
- 20:08Speaker 6: it was more of a personal a personal thing that was,
- 20:11Speaker 6: you know, eating at me. It's like I'd set this
- 20:13Speaker 6: goal out and I'd worked so hard and I had
- 20:14Speaker 6: gotten so close, and then that last month I kind
- 20:16Speaker 6: of took a left turn and wasn't feeling as good,
- 20:19Speaker 6: and I felt like all these plans that I had
- 20:22Speaker 6: and like this high spirit of like I'm gonna have
- 20:24Speaker 6: a chance to pitch, We're starting to dwindle away. So
- 20:28Speaker 6: I think it was more like the selfishness of wanting
- 20:30Speaker 6: to get in there and wanting to be a part
- 20:31Speaker 6: of it. That was the more of the contributing factor
- 20:34Speaker 6: to me pushing. Yeah, it's freaking awesome.
- 20:39Speaker 3: I love the honesty because how many dudes did we
- 20:43Speaker 3: see come back last year in the postseason, not just
- 20:46Speaker 3: for the Padres, I'm talking about around the league, and
- 20:49Speaker 3: it's like, you have to be honest with yourself because
- 20:52Speaker 3: eighty percent of Joe Musgrove might have been enough for
- 20:56Speaker 3: the Padres to say, Okay, we don't have a better option,
- 20:59Speaker 3: but in his mind he wasn't probably even at that point.
- 21:02Speaker 3: So I love the honesty.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Yeah, We've got a lot more of that.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And you know, somebody in a somewhat similar spot here
- 21:10Speaker 2: in Brandon Woodriff, who was on Brewer Territory. We didn't
- 21:13Speaker 2: get to Big Wu. We got too many others over
- 21:15Speaker 2: at Brewer's camp. But Big Wu is also trying to
- 21:18Speaker 2: put together a full, healthy season, and again, this is
- 21:20Speaker 2: another team that's going to be like, hey, dude, I
- 21:23Speaker 2: know you've missed a lot of time in the past,
- 21:25Speaker 2: but when you were pitching last year, you looked really
- 21:28Speaker 2: damn good. And then of course we got to the
- 21:29Speaker 2: playoffs and you know, he couldn't be a part of
- 21:31Speaker 2: the mix. So Brewer Territory talked to Big Wu about
- 21:35Speaker 2: a big upcoming season this.
- 21:38Speaker 8: Year after trading Freddie, and I'm kind of, you know,
- 21:41Speaker 8: the last one standing, and it's it's been it's been
- 21:45Speaker 8: a fun process for me, to be honest, and I've
- 21:49Speaker 8: never been a huge vocal guy, but I try to
- 21:51Speaker 8: lead by example and try to be the best and
- 21:54Speaker 8: most consistent, you know guy in terms of preparation and
- 21:59Speaker 8: and just you know, doing the things daily to get
- 22:01Speaker 8: my body ready to go, you know, play catch or
- 22:03Speaker 8: whatever it is, and try to and try to set
- 22:06Speaker 8: those standards in that way. But it's been fun to
- 22:12Speaker 8: talk to these guys and help them, and because I've
- 22:15Speaker 8: gone through the experiences now.
- 22:16Speaker 7: That you know Quinn and Chad.
- 22:18Speaker 8: You know Chad and Mis went through coming out of
- 22:21Speaker 8: the bullpen in the playoffs, pitching in big moments, pitching
- 22:24Speaker 8: in big spots and doing well and drawing from those experiences,
- 22:29Speaker 8: just like you know at eighteen, that was that was
- 22:32Speaker 8: that basically springboarded me into into where I'm at now
- 22:36Speaker 8: and the pitcher that I am. And so I try
- 22:39Speaker 8: to just I try to I try to not talk
- 22:43Speaker 8: about when I come back to the metrics, I try
- 22:46Speaker 8: not to talk about any of that stuff.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I try to just talk.
- 22:48Speaker 8: About more of the mental side of the game with
- 22:51Speaker 8: these guys and how to you know, go about pre
- 22:56Speaker 8: pitch routine or whatever it is, or type of situations
- 22:59Speaker 8: you get into them the field.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's the that's that's the role. One one.
- 23:08Speaker 3: They're paying him a lot of money in Brewers Land,
- 23:11Speaker 3: But that's the role that Big Wu. I even kind
- 23:14Speaker 3: of saw because I saw the maturation process in eighteen
- 23:16Speaker 3: from he had gotten a call up in seventeen. Then
- 23:19Speaker 3: he was kind of up and down in eighteen to
- 23:21Speaker 3: the point where he was coming out of the bullpen
- 23:22Speaker 3: and giving us a big innings. So I have a
- 23:25Speaker 3: hard time thinking while he was talking there, listening to
- 23:27Speaker 3: what he said about something Big Wu hasn't been through
- 23:30Speaker 3: in his career struggles getting sent down, moved to the bullpen,
- 23:35Speaker 3: having a massive role in the starting rotation, to being
- 23:39Speaker 3: a cy young type of pitcher, to injury to recovering.
- 23:43Speaker 3: So it's like he's just a great sounding board for
- 23:45Speaker 3: so many pictures in that organization.
- 23:48Speaker 2: See sir, all right, sir, We're going to get to
- 23:51Speaker 2: another picture while Ron Washington is getting set up out
- 23:55Speaker 2: there at Giants camp.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Jared Weaver, the former Angels starter on Halo territory.
- 24:02Speaker 9: You know, I came in young. I came in a
- 24:04Speaker 9: little you know, cocky. I started what nine and zero
- 24:07Speaker 9: or something to start my career. But those guys would
- 24:09Speaker 9: put me in my place when I wasn't doing something right.
- 24:12Speaker 9: You talk about, you know, going in the food line
- 24:16Speaker 9: too early, or getting in the training room too early
- 24:18Speaker 9: and not giving these these veteran guys that have been
- 24:21Speaker 9: around the time to get their bodies ready, because it,
- 24:24Speaker 9: you know, thirty eight years old, it might take you
- 24:27Speaker 9: a little longer than a twenty three year old to
- 24:29Speaker 9: get ready. So you gotta, you know, you gotta get
- 24:32Speaker 9: your ass out of the out of the training room
- 24:34Speaker 9: and and and get in there when you know no
- 24:36Speaker 9: one's in there.
- 24:37Speaker 7: But uh, you know, Lackeye took me under.
- 24:40Speaker 9: My wing and really grinding me on working hard the
- 24:44Speaker 9: conditioning side of things, the weight side of things, when
- 24:48Speaker 9: to kind of push it when it back off.
- 24:49Speaker 7: It's a long season, uh you know.
- 24:53Speaker 9: And I try to instill what kind of Lackey told
- 24:57Speaker 9: me and you guys coming up, and you know, I
- 24:59Speaker 9: might have some guys the wrong way, and and probably
- 25:02Speaker 9: didn't some guys probably didn't understand me. But if you did,
- 25:05Speaker 9: I would hope that you know, you kind of flourished
- 25:08Speaker 9: from it, and uh you know, and and you know,
- 25:13Speaker 9: I just love being in the clubhouse and competing and
- 25:15Speaker 9: being with you guys, and and uh you know, maybe
- 25:18Speaker 9: my mindset kind of got a little bit out of
- 25:22Speaker 9: control with trying to put you guys in the right direction.
- 25:25Speaker 9: But that was just the way my mentality was and
- 25:28Speaker 9: kind of learned from those guys and and uh, but yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 9: towards the end of my career, you know, with the
- 25:34Speaker 9: Padres there was it was not like that anymore, and
- 25:38Speaker 9: you know, I had to kind of back off and
- 25:41Speaker 9: and kind of cater to these guys, which was, you know,
- 25:45Speaker 9: it was hard for me to do. And uh, you know,
- 25:47Speaker 9: there wasn't any dinners going out, you know, with ten
- 25:50Speaker 9: to twelve guys or everybody was going to their hotel
- 25:53Speaker 9: rooms and playing video games and not hanging out in
- 25:56Speaker 9: the hotel bar to talk about the game afterwards or
- 25:59Speaker 9: you know, things like that.
- 26:00Speaker 7: So it was not only my career was dying.
- 26:03Speaker 9: But the passion for coming to the field every day
- 26:08Speaker 9: and then trying to work hard for those guys kind
- 26:11Speaker 9: of went out the window too. So it's a totally
- 26:15Speaker 9: different game.
- 26:18Speaker 3: It is a different game. And you hear this from
- 26:20Speaker 3: guys because their interaction or their experiences when they first
- 26:26Speaker 3: got called up. You heard about the dudes that were
- 26:28Speaker 3: given him a hard time. But he also looks at
- 26:31Speaker 3: it as teaching as he was being taught because he
- 26:34Speaker 3: was cocky. The biggest thing I always said towards the
- 26:37Speaker 3: end of my career, the players hadn't changed. When you're
- 26:41Speaker 3: twenty two years old and you get called up to
- 26:42Speaker 3: the big leagues, you think and you know that you
- 26:45Speaker 3: are the best, and you look at these guys and
- 26:47Speaker 3: they're like, oh, this guy's thirty geez, what is he
- 26:50Speaker 3: He's a walking fossil. But the reality is you got
- 26:55Speaker 3: to be able to connect with all those guys because ultimately,
- 26:57Speaker 3: it doesn't matter if you're thirty eight or eighteen. When
- 27:00Speaker 3: you've come into a big league clubhouse, it's about trying
- 27:03Speaker 3: to win. And what Weave was saying was awesome because
- 27:05Speaker 3: he was being honest that maybe you know, there is
- 27:10Speaker 3: a lost sense of competing and wanting to be out
- 27:13Speaker 3: there to get better every single day, and it can
- 27:16Speaker 3: get lost when you're making fun of rookies, but it's
- 27:19Speaker 3: also to not put them in their place, but to
- 27:23Speaker 3: help them be the next steward of this game. And so, yeah,
- 27:27Speaker 3: we Weave is a guy. He is definitely a guy
- 27:29Speaker 3: for me.
- 27:31Speaker 2: We're going to get into all of the nitty gritty
- 27:33Speaker 2: details about why you should switch to Mint Mobile, but
- 27:37Speaker 2: I brought a special guest in for this one to
- 27:39Speaker 2: alert you that you might be paying way too.

- 28:30Speaker 2: See mintmobile dot com. Hey, hot corner time and it
- 28:42Speaker 2: sounds like the padres are going to get sold really soon.
- 28:45Speaker 2: It could come in the next few weeks. It's kind
- 28:47Speaker 2: of sneaking up on everyone. So here we're actually posting
- 28:51Speaker 2: the correction to the story put out in The Athletic.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Dennis Lynn and Ken just reposted how Drew Brees and
- 28:59Speaker 2: the founder of Viewery I want to be in on
- 29:03Speaker 2: this regarding the process. Those two guys did not submit
- 29:07Speaker 2: a formal bid on their own. They're exploring potentially partnering
- 29:11Speaker 2: with one of the other groups. So apparently there are
- 29:15Speaker 2: five bidders that are involved, and first round of bids
- 29:19Speaker 2: we're due on Wednesday, Like this is happening fast, Kratz.
- 29:22Speaker 2: It's five bidders and then they hope to have this
- 29:26Speaker 2: finished up by opening day. And we see this process
- 29:30Speaker 2: often happen that way, so you kind of get it
- 29:31Speaker 2: out of the way so that you can then just
- 29:33Speaker 2: enjoy your last ride, and then the transition happens.
- 29:36Speaker 1: At some point during the season.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I think we saw this timing pretty similar with the
- 29:40Speaker 2: Orioles from what I remember.
- 29:43Speaker 1: When David Clara Getty that group.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I thought it was pretty similar where they took over
- 29:49Speaker 2: around the start, like we got the news around the
- 29:51Speaker 2: start of the season and then they officially took over.
- 29:54Speaker 3: No, okay, I just thought there was semantics thought. I
- 29:58Speaker 3: thought there was like a game and then they like
- 30:01Speaker 3: we're in the bar buying drinks right around when it
- 30:04Speaker 3: happened around Camden Yards.
- 30:06Speaker 1: But whatever it was the official yeah yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 30:10Speaker 2: So anyway, we're about to see a big change here
- 30:13Speaker 2: with the team when it depends who is going to
- 30:16Speaker 2: be running that team. Joe Lakobizibob. We talked about him earlier.
- 30:19Speaker 2: He owns the Warriors. He's done a pretty nice job there.
- 30:22Speaker 2: And then there's an English Soccer League team owner. I
- 30:27Speaker 2: think he owns Chelsea the football club, which is worth
- 30:30Speaker 2: a lot of money, many many billions, many more than
- 30:32Speaker 2: what the Padres are going to go for. Padres evaluation
- 30:35Speaker 2: from from some of the publications has them like in
- 30:38Speaker 2: the mid twos billion, but it sounds like they're asking
- 30:41Speaker 2: for three and I think they're going to get close
- 30:43Speaker 2: to that number because it's such a vibe out there.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Kratz.
- 30:47Speaker 2: I think there's still a lot of room for growth
- 30:50Speaker 2: and they dominate the city even if it's a smaller market.
- 30:54Speaker 2: I mean, they're selling that place out. It's like imagine
- 30:56Speaker 2: if you have a freaking concert tour and you're just
- 30:58Speaker 2: selling out a two nights in a row or eighty
- 31:01Speaker 2: one nights in a row.
- 31:02Speaker 1: I mean they're they're printing, they know what they're doing.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And yeah, did they jack up the payroll a little
- 31:07Speaker 2: bit and maybe pay or overpay for some guys perhaps,
- 31:10Speaker 2: but some of that's coming back down. I think this
- 31:13Speaker 2: is going to be a very profitable franchise.
- 31:15Speaker 3: I mean, they've they've created they've created an entertainment industry
- 31:20Speaker 3: right there at the stadium. Like I know a lot
- 31:23Speaker 3: of teams are like, oh, we got to build around
- 31:25Speaker 3: the stadiums. They won't say it, they won't say it,
- 31:28Speaker 3: but they've created the energy in the stadium that's now
- 31:33Speaker 3: permeating through the city like it is. It's San Diego's
- 31:36Speaker 3: only professional team, and I think, you know, it's credit
- 31:40Speaker 3: to the late mister Sidler, but what he created, what
- 31:45Speaker 3: he allowed the payroll to get to, was to win.
- 31:49Speaker 3: And I think this organization still wants to win. With
- 31:51Speaker 3: a j pereller at the helm and oh added a
- 31:57Speaker 3: repercussion or what happens when you put money in to
- 32:00Speaker 3: try to win, Fans start coming out. You get a
- 32:02Speaker 3: good team and they have like it's like it's a snowball.
- 32:05Speaker 3: They have like seven or eight games a year where
- 32:08Speaker 3: a new attendance record because they're adding seats, people want
- 32:11Speaker 3: to go to the game, and it's it is a vibe.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Yeah, you just want you want you just want ownership
- 32:22Speaker 4: to come in. I just want ownerships that are looking
- 32:25Speaker 4: like the Mets are like. You just want them to spend.
- 32:28Speaker 4: You want to make this league fun. You want to
- 32:30Speaker 4: get these exciting contracts. Obviously little bias coming from a
- 32:32Speaker 4: player's side, but you want teams. The more teams that
- 32:35Speaker 4: go for it, the more fun this league becomes.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Cohen actually has the highest bid ever for Major
- 32:44Speaker 2: League Baseball, buying the Mets for two point four to
- 32:47Speaker 2: two billion. But again this this is going to beat
- 32:50Speaker 2: that number. Also, think about it on the franchise valuation side,
- 32:54Speaker 2: the current group that owns the Padres. This isn't like
- 32:58Speaker 2: the Twins where they bought them forty years go. They
- 33:00Speaker 2: bought this team in twenty twelve. Okay, so it's twenty
- 33:04Speaker 2: twenty six, that's it's fourteen years ago. In fourteen years,
- 33:08Speaker 2: the valuation has gone from eight hundred million to now
- 33:12Speaker 2: they might sell this team for close to three billion dollars.
- 33:16Speaker 2: They are going to at least triple their money, at
- 33:20Speaker 2: least triple their money. Put your money in the market
- 33:24Speaker 2: in twenty twelve and then close your eyes and look
- 33:26Speaker 2: at it now.
- 33:27Speaker 1: It didn't triple.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Nice, No it didn't. But ultimately that is what brings
- 33:36Speaker 3: businessmen into a business. But oh no, down business and
- 33:42Speaker 3: a sport that you know, what Scott's talking about is
- 33:46Speaker 3: teams and owners crying, oh it's poor, like we had
- 33:50Speaker 3: to You don't understand. There was a lot of overhead
- 33:52Speaker 3: during that time. Okay, but now we're coming to the
- 33:57Speaker 3: completion of all that overhead, all of that although investments
- 34:01Speaker 3: and how you handled how you stewarded your possession of
- 34:05Speaker 3: the team, it shows it growth. It shows it grew,
- 34:10Speaker 3: and they they had growth that now they're able to
- 34:13Speaker 3: cash in. Now the state side, Peter Sidler's a state
- 34:18Speaker 3: is able to cash in. And I think it's interesting
- 34:20Speaker 3: because all we hear is, oh, we're going to wait
- 34:23Speaker 3: till the new CBA. We're gonna wait. You know, they're
- 34:25Speaker 3: probably gonna wait till the new CBA to put their organization,
- 34:29Speaker 3: put their franchise on the market. It'll be interested to
- 34:33Speaker 3: see how if it's sold before this new CBA and
- 34:39Speaker 3: then the organizations that are sold after the CBA, did
- 34:43Speaker 3: they get a gold mine by jumping in a year early.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think they're already starting to price it
- 34:50Speaker 2: that way, where they think POSTBA, your valuation goes up,
- 34:55Speaker 2: and that's why some of the teams are waiting to sell.
- 34:57Speaker 2: And really my point also is even simpler that they've
- 35:01Speaker 2: done a nice job with the team and the money
- 35:04Speaker 2: goes up. I mean, the money goes up with the
- 35:06Speaker 2: league anyway, with the revenues. But they've done a nice
- 35:08Speaker 2: job out there, and Kip winning matters, it's most of it.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yeah, But they haven't won a.
- 35:14Speaker 2: World Series title, and they've brought a lot more of
- 35:16Speaker 2: a winning culture out there, a lot more of an
- 35:18Speaker 2: entertaining culture out there.
- 35:20Speaker 1: So I know there's Dodger fans that are watching right now.
- 35:22Speaker 2: They're going to insert their little bro jokes or whatever
- 35:25Speaker 2: they've got for the Padres because they've been winning and
- 35:27Speaker 2: the Padres didn't. And really I can't harp enough on
- 35:30Speaker 2: going back a couple of years ago where the Padres
- 35:33Speaker 2: had them and I think they would won a World
- 35:35Speaker 2: Series that year.
- 35:35Speaker 1: That was that was the time.
- 35:37Speaker 2: For some reason, it seemed, you know, distracted and just
- 35:41Speaker 2: they couldn't put together hits against a really good Dodgers'
- 35:43Speaker 2: pitching staff. But anyway, you fast forward and Kip, I mean,
- 35:47Speaker 2: for a good chunk of your playing career, what did
- 35:49Speaker 2: you think of the Padres as a franchise.
- 35:53Speaker 4: They again, as j I said, when Webby was here,
- 35:56Speaker 4: I never got to play them, or never really played
- 35:58Speaker 4: against in San Diego, so I never experienced competing against them.
- 36:03Speaker 4: But at the same time, they weren't what they are now.
- 36:06Speaker 4: I think once Preller got there, once you got to
- 36:10Speaker 4: the Machado, Bogart's like, you got all these big names,
- 36:13Speaker 4: big contracts coming in. You saw the NFL team lead
- 36:18Speaker 4: like that city loves that team now and it looks
- 36:21Speaker 4: like a vibe to play it. Like you said, it
- 36:24Speaker 4: looks like a fun, loud place that gets even louder
- 36:27Speaker 4: during the postseason. Guys want to live in San Diego,
- 36:30Speaker 4: Guys want to play there. It looks like the place
- 36:31Speaker 4: to be. They just were not able to get over
- 36:34Speaker 4: the hump that year that you were talking about. And
- 36:37Speaker 4: who knows, maybe this could be this new ownership if
- 36:40Speaker 4: it does happen and the deal's made and it goes
- 36:42Speaker 4: through and it gives them a chance to reload for
- 36:45Speaker 4: Preller to go after some other big names and get
- 36:48Speaker 4: there maybe after the Dodgers are finishing their run, if
- 36:51Speaker 4: they're about to go on a run. So it's one
- 36:54Speaker 4: of the better places to play in the league weather wise,
- 36:58Speaker 4: fan wise, and if you have good ownership and ownership
- 37:02Speaker 4: willing to spend. Why wysees not II on most free agents' list.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Improwler is actually going to be there now for a while.
- 37:10Speaker 2: You just signed an extension. Yeah, there's back and worth
- 37:13Speaker 2: going on there. So yeah, he's he's locked in, all right,
- 37:16Speaker 2: So this is going to transition us to current free agent.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Justin Turner chiming in on the Socials last night. Something
- 37:24Speaker 2: that popped was John Haymond putting in his story what
- 37:28Speaker 2: a salary cap would look like from a proposal standpoint,
- 37:31Speaker 2: and then people were reacting. He said, early suggestions are
- 37:34Speaker 2: looking at a proposed cap around two sixty to two
- 37:37Speaker 2: eighty MILI and a floor of one forty to one sixty.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Justin Turner then put out their question for the quote parody.
- 37:44Speaker 2: People who are pro salary cap, do you implement the
- 37:46Speaker 2: cap and then wait for all the deferrals like the
- 37:49Speaker 2: Dodgers to expire before you start seeing if the cap
- 37:51Speaker 2: works for parody. Do you not think this gives them
- 37:53Speaker 2: an even bigger advantage over the next five to ten years,
- 37:56Speaker 2: And then debate ensued.
- 37:59Speaker 1: About what that would look like.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So even if we do get to a world where
- 38:02Speaker 2: there's a hard cap, because we have soft one now
- 38:04Speaker 2: a hard cap implemented. Yeah, they're not going to do
- 38:08Speaker 2: this overnight. It would take a lot of time to
- 38:10Speaker 2: get there. But he said, in case you're wondering, the
- 38:13Speaker 2: deferrals wouldn't actually start hitting the Dodgers hard until twenty
- 38:16Speaker 2: thirty four. They would be at about ninety and deferrals
- 38:18Speaker 2: toward a propose cap, so eight years until they start
- 38:20Speaker 2: to feel it. I will say, though, there's so much
- 38:23Speaker 2: nuance to what he's talking about, because we still factor
- 38:27Speaker 2: in deferrals to the luxury tax numbers so you can
- 38:29Speaker 2: do net present value, So it doesn't quite work that way,
- 38:33Speaker 2: and I think it's more worth talking out. The other
- 38:35Speaker 2: thing I'll point out there is, I mean, these stories
- 38:37Speaker 2: are coming out left and right, and the season hasn't
- 38:39Speaker 2: started yet, Kip.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Right now, we have some fans like stop talking about
- 38:43Speaker 1: the CBA.
- 38:44Speaker 2: And I'm like, the stories keep coming out and social
- 38:46Speaker 2: media keeps going to blaze about the topics. So yeah,
- 38:50Speaker 2: I mean, I don't want to talk about it all
- 38:52Speaker 2: day either. I know we're going to talk about it
- 38:53Speaker 2: all freaking winter long next year. But right now, somebody
- 38:56Speaker 2: puts out a story, puts out a proposed cap number
- 38:59Speaker 2: that definitely comes from a you know, somebody who's in
- 39:02Speaker 2: the know. There comes from someone on the league side
- 39:04Speaker 2: who's leaking that out. We're going to react to it
- 39:07Speaker 2: at least.
- 39:08Speaker 4: A couple of things. Couple it's our job to talk
- 39:10Speaker 4: about it with this show. That's exactly what we should
- 39:12Speaker 4: be doing. It's a big part of the game, and
- 39:15Speaker 4: it's a big part of the direction this game's headed
- 39:17Speaker 4: to right now, where this is going to be a
- 39:19Speaker 4: huge story. And one thing that I think the player's
- 39:22Speaker 4: side has always kind of stood by is we want transparency.
- 39:24Speaker 4: We want the public to have all the knowledge and
- 39:27Speaker 4: all the stories that we get so they can have
- 39:30Speaker 4: all the information to make kind of their own judgment.
- 39:33Speaker 4: But no, these stories are very important because this game
- 39:35Speaker 4: is maybe coming to a standstill here soon because of
- 39:39Speaker 4: certain disagreements, and I want everybody to know what's actually
- 39:42Speaker 4: going on, and I want them to make an educated opinion.
- 39:44Speaker 4: So these stories are very important to talk to talk about.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Can I ask a question, Kip, you're a business man.
- 39:52Speaker 2: If if fans feel like some teams you know, can't
- 39:57Speaker 2: spend enough and they're gonna have to spend a lot
- 39:59Speaker 2: more on a floor like that, Let's say it's one
- 40:01Speaker 2: sixty mil. I mean, there's some teams barely touching one hundred.
- 40:04Speaker 2: How are they getting there? I'm going to tell you
- 40:05Speaker 2: how they get there. They're going to get there from
- 40:07Speaker 2: revenue sharing. And then this just basically puts in forced
- 40:11Speaker 2: revenue sharing. So I know the player stance is, Hey,
- 40:16Speaker 2: if you want a cap, it's just suppressing player salaries, right,
- 40:19Speaker 2: it's concentrating them. It helps franchise valuations. Isn't the same
- 40:23Speaker 2: difference to just give more money to the teams that
- 40:26Speaker 2: don't feel like they can keep up and then force
- 40:28Speaker 2: them to actually spend it, because we don't do either
- 40:30Speaker 2: of those things right now? Like, Okay, you played most
- 40:33Speaker 2: of your career in Cleveland, right, Cleveland doesn't spend much
- 40:37Speaker 2: in the offseason. I mean lately they really do almost nothing.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I think they kind of push chips in more during
- 40:43Speaker 2: you got during your last run there, right, twenty sixteen,
- 40:46Speaker 2: there's a little more going on now.
- 40:47Speaker 1: It's like really really quiet.
- 40:49Speaker 2: We had Mike Turnoff the other day on and he
- 40:52Speaker 2: was very personal, but very also very straightforward, like, yeah,
- 40:56Speaker 2: we don't play in those waters. I'm like, Okay, what
- 40:58Speaker 2: if I just dropped one hundred million bucks on you?
- 41:01Speaker 2: And it sounds crazy, but they have a new TV
- 41:03Speaker 2: deal that's going to come up in the next couple
- 41:05Speaker 2: of years, so it's not that crazy that they're going
- 41:07Speaker 2: to get more money and they can figure out the
- 41:09Speaker 2: revenue sharing a little bit more. If they're then told, hey,
- 41:13Speaker 2: you got to spend this on players, what's the difference
- 41:15Speaker 2: if your team then is forced to spend that way.
- 41:18Speaker 2: What's the difference between that and then putting a cap
- 41:21Speaker 2: on something.
- 41:23Speaker 4: I think the difference Here's one where I'll say the
- 41:25Speaker 4: difference is I think after we were making our run
- 41:27Speaker 4: in Cleveland around sixteen and all those years we were
- 41:29Speaker 4: able to sign Edwin and Carnrasci and I think for
- 41:32Speaker 4: four years for eighty so a twenty eight year. It's
- 41:36Speaker 4: granted it's spent some years since then, but you see
- 41:39Speaker 4: Cleveland has kind of stopped spending a little bit. You
- 41:41Speaker 4: don't want a team, especially a small market team to
- 41:44Speaker 4: go for it, to spend some money and then have
- 41:47Speaker 4: to take a decade to lick their wounds from trying
- 41:49Speaker 4: to go for it. You want them to keep going
- 41:50Speaker 4: for it. That's so I think that's where the floor
- 41:52Speaker 4: is a little bit better than the cap. But listen,
- 41:55Speaker 4: it's not like they're they're struggling to make money here
- 41:57Speaker 4: with TV deals and everything else. I think it's no difference. Uh,
- 42:03Speaker 4: when you when you put it on paper the way
- 42:04Speaker 4: that you were laying it out earlier. So I think
- 42:07Speaker 4: you're using too much common sense and rationale right now,
- 42:10Speaker 4: which just hasn't always been there in negotiations. But hopefully
- 42:12Speaker 4: it will be come to the future. I think there
- 42:15Speaker 4: is a medium, there is some place where we can
- 42:19Speaker 4: meet forward. The problem with these negotiations is instead of
- 42:21Speaker 4: just agreeing on the middle piece, it's i'll give you
- 42:24Speaker 4: this inch, you give me this inch, and it's like
- 42:26Speaker 4: it takes time to get there to the middle because
- 42:28Speaker 4: nobody wants to even give that inch. So hopefully the calmer,
- 42:32Speaker 4: smarter heads prevail in the long run. But yeah, it's
- 42:35Speaker 4: just these are the stories that are going to keep
- 42:37Speaker 4: coming out where you're gonna realize why no, no sides
- 42:40Speaker 4: willing to budge yet.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Kras what you think of these parameters.
- 42:47Speaker 3: I just think my opinion is I try not to
- 42:52Speaker 3: be two players sided, but I'm trying to bring the
- 42:56Speaker 3: reality of the situation. This is an owner's I don't
- 43:00Speaker 3: have an issue as much with the guardians because they
- 43:04Speaker 3: do try to win the organizations that try to pocket money.
- 43:09Speaker 3: It is where is where I have the issue. Let's
- 43:12Speaker 3: say let's say the the Marlins. Let's go to the Marlins.
- 43:15Speaker 3: There's seventy six million dollars as a projected opening day salaries. Ah,
- 43:23Speaker 3: they're just gonna automatically get to They're just with the
- 43:26Speaker 3: increased revenue sharing, they're just gonna automatically double their salary,
- 43:31Speaker 3: like their salary expenditure. No like that. I just have
- 43:36Speaker 3: I have a hard time believing they're just gonna automatically
- 43:38Speaker 3: poof like generate this much money. This could be something.
- 43:42Speaker 3: There's something like, like Kip said, there's something in the middle.
- 43:45Speaker 3: There's an answer in the middle there because we have
- 43:48Speaker 3: the soft salary cap that teams are willing to go over.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Teams are willing to pay that penalty, which then yes
- 43:57Speaker 3: goes to players. But it also goes to the lower,
- 44:01Speaker 3: lower level organizations, the organizations that need the revenue sharing.
- 44:05Speaker 3: So why can't we have a soft floor where if
- 44:09Speaker 3: you don't hit this. I just don't like the parameters
- 44:12Speaker 3: that are there are just you know, they're they're putting
- 44:16Speaker 3: those numbers out in the media so that fans are like, oh, yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 3: that sounds great. That's my team is a small market.
- 44:22Speaker 3: My team is not the Dodgers. So I'm going to
- 44:25Speaker 3: you know, I'm going to get behind this. The reality
- 44:28Speaker 3: is the Dodgers are going to get richer if they
- 44:31Speaker 3: institute this. Teams are going to get richer, and the
- 44:36Speaker 3: parody is not going to be like, look at the
- 44:38Speaker 3: other organize, look at the other leagues. The parody is
- 44:41Speaker 3: not there. So it's an organizational thing. Maybe when you
- 44:46Speaker 3: look at the league and you say everybody has to compete,
- 44:49Speaker 3: it's competitive balance. It's not a CBA. That's just a balance.
- 44:53Speaker 3: It's not a BA. It's a competitive balance. The point
- 44:56Speaker 3: of our league is to make every team compet. Not
- 45:00Speaker 3: everybody gets a trophy, but every team compete, and without
- 45:04Speaker 3: a soft salary floor, those teams have no reason to compete.
- 45:09Speaker 3: They just continue to get their revenue checks, and they
- 45:11Speaker 3: continue to cry poor, and they continue to finish in
- 45:15Speaker 3: third to fifth place.
- 45:16Speaker 2: And that is the real battle going on behind the scenes.
- 45:19Speaker 2: That is that is a fact. There's a massive battle,
- 45:22Speaker 2: because we've even seen owners get public about that, right.
- 45:25Speaker 2: We've heard some of you Yankees, We've heard Al Steimern
- 45:30Speaker 2: are kind of say, hey, I don't want to keep
- 45:32Speaker 2: sharing all of that with these guys because I don't
- 45:33Speaker 2: feel like they're spending it.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And that's the.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Battle that goes on behind the scenes. I mean the
- 45:38Speaker 2: TV battles there too. You know, some teams are like,
- 45:40Speaker 2: why do we have to give up all of our
- 45:42Speaker 2: rights to the league? And you see it looks like
- 45:44Speaker 2: the Braves and the Angels are going to start their
- 45:46Speaker 2: own network. So there's a lot of battling that goes
- 45:50Speaker 2: on behind the scenes. But all we see out in
- 45:52Speaker 2: public is all right, it's going to be two fifty mil.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Dodgers are going to make eight hundred million dollars a year,
- 45:57Speaker 2: and they're going to create I mean, they might be
- 46:00Speaker 2: able to buy another planet and breed their own baseball
- 46:03Speaker 2: players with that extra money and make them sign with
- 46:06Speaker 2: the Dodgers. I'm kidding but in all seriousness, it's it's
- 46:12Speaker 2: that's a tough number in my mind. Yep, I don't think.
- 46:15Speaker 2: I don't think they're going to get anywhere close to that.
- 46:17Speaker 2: And anyway, I'm just one of those people. I don't
- 46:19Speaker 2: think there's going to be a cap And I also
- 46:21Speaker 2: don't think that we're going to miss time. I think
- 46:25Speaker 2: that they're going to fake miss time. That's been my prediction.
- 46:28Speaker 2: I think they're going to fake fake miss time means
- 46:30Speaker 2: we'll get to March blah blah blah. They'll say, oh,
- 46:33Speaker 2: now we're going to start missing games, and then they'll
- 46:34Speaker 2: figure it out a couple weeks later when push comes
- 46:36Speaker 2: to shove and it starts to look like they might
- 46:38Speaker 2: actually miss them, and they'll be like, we're going to
- 46:40Speaker 2: flow some double headers. You're going to barely have any
- 46:42Speaker 2: spring training. They might not even go to spring training.
- 46:44Speaker 2: They might just do like COVID style, you go to
- 46:46Speaker 2: the ballpark, you do a week and you just go
- 46:49Speaker 2: and they say, well, you want to fight with us.
- 46:51Speaker 2: You might not be totally ready and you get hurt.
- 46:53Speaker 3: I think it needs to be remembered too, that this
- 46:56Speaker 3: is a lock This would be a lockout, not a strike,
- 47:00Speaker 3: too many people that were still alive, and nineteen ninety
- 47:04Speaker 3: four the players struck. This is the owners locking the
- 47:08Speaker 3: players out, locking their employees out of the business. Locking
- 47:12Speaker 3: up cannot come to work. So I think there's just
- 47:16Speaker 3: too many there's too many times where it's just been
- 47:18Speaker 3: very much like who the player is?
- 47:20Speaker 5: This?
- 47:20Speaker 3: The players? That to me? When this number comes out
- 47:24Speaker 3: two fifty to one sixty, if that's if that's what
- 47:27Speaker 3: they want, if they won a salary cap? What are
- 47:30Speaker 3: the owners willing to give up? Come next? John Hayman
- 47:34Speaker 3: article next next Evandrelic article next, Jason Starr Ken Rosenthal
- 47:39Speaker 3: all those articles? What are the owners willing to give up?
- 47:41Speaker 3: Because with a cap players are giving up so much?
- 47:44Speaker 3: Are you willing to let your best player go after
- 47:47Speaker 3: four years to free agency? Four years of team control?
- 47:50Speaker 3: That's it, that's what we're willing to give up. Like, no,
- 47:53Speaker 3: let's start here.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Know what happened there?
- 47:56Speaker 2: I can guarantee you what would happen there. There's something
- 47:59Speaker 2: that exists. You want me to tell you what would happen?
- 48:01Speaker 2: I'm telling you like I could see that where they're like,
- 48:04Speaker 2: forget that three years, right, and then you know what
- 48:06Speaker 2: they would say, look at the NBA, it's going to
- 48:09Speaker 2: be super team city because if you're capped on what
- 48:12Speaker 2: you can say, you all the guys are going to
- 48:13Speaker 2: go to the same spots that just treated really well.
- 48:15Speaker 2: And then you might even start to see some Quhi
- 48:17Speaker 2: Leonard marketing contracts. Oh wow, look I can get an
- 48:22Speaker 2: influencer deal, It'll turn to like nil. Look I got
- 48:25Speaker 2: an influencer deal for one post. I got twenty million bucks.
- 48:27Speaker 2: But I'm with the Dodgers. Now it could get real ugly,
- 48:30Speaker 2: real fast.
- 48:32Speaker 1: NBA is going.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Through a lot of problems right now. That's years A
- 48:36Speaker 2: regular season is sloppy right now.
- 48:39Speaker 7: It's terrible.
- 48:39Speaker 3: Guys don't even play the whole year. Yeah, but it's
