Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Dylan Thomsen: AA Road Safety Spokesperson on the rolling out of more speed camera signs
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Road safety warning signs for fixed speed cameras are set
- 0:04Speaker 2: to be rolled out across the country. The government hopes
- 0:07Speaker 2: the move will allow key we's the opportunity to check
- 0:09Speaker 2: their speeds in high crash areas to avoid tickets and accidents.
- 0:14Speaker 2: The rollout will take place as NZTA takes over managing
- 0:17Speaker 2: speed cameras from police. The warning signs are already going
- 0:20Speaker 2: up and the AA Road Safety spokesperson Dylan Thompson is
- 0:23Speaker 2: with me now, Dylan, good morning. Do these signs work?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Do we?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Presumably they do. We slow down when we see them.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Good morning, Ryan. We expect to see a big reduction
- 0:35Speaker 1: in tickets at these sites when the signs are rolled out,
- 0:39Speaker 1: which means obviously that we have less people exceeding the
- 0:42Speaker 1: speed limit at those high risk locations. So in our view,
- 0:46Speaker 1: this is a really good thing and has been a
- 0:48Speaker 1: long time coming. We're really pleased to see these signs
- 0:50Speaker 1: finally happening.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Okay, but that's assuming that all of the cameras are
- 0:54Speaker 2: in high risk locations. And it used to bug me
- 0:57Speaker 2: going to Wellington driving down not on a gorge and
- 1:01Speaker 2: you know you're going downhill, so everyone speeds a little bit.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But is it a high crash area? Are the cameras
- 1:06Speaker 2: in high crash areas they go.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Through a process to establish where the cameras are going
- 1:14Speaker 1: to go, and in the past has been involved with that,
- 1:18Speaker 1: So they definitely have looked to find either locations with
- 1:22Speaker 1: a history of crashes involving speed or areas where there's
- 1:27Speaker 1: a lot of people traveling above the speed limit. No
- 1:30Speaker 1: longer Gorge, I know it very well. I think one
- 1:33Speaker 1: of the things people forget there is at more peak times,
- 1:38Speaker 1: especially when you're coming downhill, there can be tailbacks of
- 1:42Speaker 1: traffic that come and and if you're going down there
- 1:46Speaker 1: faster than eighty and it's a bit weirt or something
- 1:48Speaker 1: like that, and you come around the bend and suddenly
- 1:50Speaker 1: a line of cars stopped in front of you, there
- 1:53Speaker 1: is a lot of risk there. But hopefully the signs
- 1:56Speaker 1: when they go up are going to help people going
- 1:58Speaker 1: down now ato on a Gorge to remind them that
- 2:00Speaker 1: there's a camera there, check their speed, slow down, get
- 2:03Speaker 1: a lot of the.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Risk doesn't how far are the cameras from the signs?
- 2:07Speaker 2: In other words, how long do you have to slow down?
- 2:11Speaker 2: If you are not that I'm saying you should speed
- 2:12Speaker 2: or that people do.
- 2:13Speaker 1: But it's going to vary a little bit depending on
- 2:18Speaker 1: the environment, you know, so they'll have to adjust the
- 2:20Speaker 1: signs depending on roads and intersections and what's around. But
- 2:25Speaker 1: we're probably looking somewhere around two hundred meters either side
- 2:29Speaker 1: as a ballpark figure. And I think just one other
- 2:32Speaker 1: thing that's really im one of those because I hear
- 2:34Speaker 1: people talk about our trys will just drive above the
- 2:39Speaker 1: speed limits or they see one of these signs, they're
- 2:41Speaker 1: not slow down and then speed up again. There is
- 2:45Speaker 1: definitely a certain group of people who just try to
- 2:48Speaker 1: drive as fast as they can above the speed limit.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I would say those drivers already have a pretty good
- 2:53Speaker 1: idea where the cameras are. What these signs are going
- 2:57Speaker 1: to help us. The large bulk of people who aren't
- 2:59Speaker 1: trying to the speed limit, they're good drivers, they're trying
- 3:02Speaker 1: to follow the rules. Maybe they're just a bit distracted,
- 3:04Speaker 1: maybe they just have let their speed creep up. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: it gives those people chance to just a little financial
- 3:10Speaker 1: incenter reminder to take a look oh this camp by
- 3:13Speaker 1: coming up, check the speed, slowly down if you need to.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Dylan Thompson, thanks so much for your time. The AA
- 3:19Speaker 2: road safety spokesperson on the rollout of signs warning us
- 3:23Speaker 2: of speed cameras.
