- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: Hello!
- 0:06[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to MLGP NFL podcast, I'm Connor Roy, there's Albert Brear, Albert I'm a fresh off of my first Red Eye, and probably about a decade.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: And holy shit, that is a, that's a body rock and experience.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_01]: Right in the middle of free agency now, this is pre-draft also.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I was very excited to go out to California and visit with a Prospective Top 5 pick.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: You can find out who, when you buy the magazine, when it comes out in April.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I have to say this, we talk all the time.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: Prospective, I think it's perspective.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: Prospective.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a regional?
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a regional?
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: I just think you should.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: I just think you mass holes don't know how to pronounce anything.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: Is that like, is that like tournament?
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, all my friends from Jersey would call it a tournament.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we've all watched the departed.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: We know how people from your side of the country know what's interesting is like, nobody I grew up with has that accent.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: Zero point zero people have that accent.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's a certain pockets of Boston that have it.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: And there's actually, you know, there was a news story.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was actually like CBS this morning or one of the national shows did it on the Boston accents actually disappearing, which is interesting.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, my argument about the Boston X and in particular, but I think all accents are sort of disappearing.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like, in, you know, US, like not international, obviously, but like, I think, I think we all are starting to sound the same.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's the same thing as like when I go to my kid goes to this, he's a, he's a tight end, so he does like, he goes to like this, he goes to tight end, you.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: I know he goes to this quarterback.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: So his quarterback thing is his team's quarterback goes to and the quarterback's got to pay I think 60 bucks a session whatever it is, but the receivers can go for free.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: So he goes and shows up to that and it's good, he'll always do on it.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, I noticed I said to some of the other dads, all the quarterbacks throw exactly the same now.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: There's no
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then I watch kids pitch and baseball and they all pitch the same, you know, and so, like I think that's probably the same thing is like that we all are that way to talk the same too.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: My argument was always at the Boston accent, is a choice, whereas Brooklyn, Long Island, parts of New Jersey, it's so insular that you, and like all of your relatives, your grandparents, everybody's talk like that, and you've just never met anyone who didn't talk like that, that you absolutely come out with an accent or if you don't have it, and then you move in, like I did,
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: And then was very lucky to inherit a very large New Jersey Italian family through marriage.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: Your inflection, your tone, everything does change, whereas I think that the Boston voice in the only reason I say this is because I had two college friends.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: from Massachusetts when the departed came out.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, I mean, like sophomore year at Syracuse, these guys just show back up to campus and, you know, they're, you know, it's like, it doesn't have it.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're like Walberg, you know, and that was around in the sea, the detective squad, you know?
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was me though, because like, so goodwill hunting came out when I was in high school.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so when I got to Ohio every good will hunting came out when you were in high school.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: Holy shit.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: I got to look at the the early state, but yeah, I was in high school hold on.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it came out.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: It came out.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: It came out my senior year in high school.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: Senior year in high school.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: December, 1997.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: So I graduated in 98.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: Amazing.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: So when I like every girl would ask me why I don't sound like that, I tell them where I was from.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it was like, why don't you sound like that?
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, because nobody, I, nobody, I grew up with sounds like that.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and my part of it, too, is like my dad's from Detroit, you know?
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: And so I may be sound like even more Midwestern than I do East Coast.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: And then my mom's from Austria, which obviously, if you have a, if you're the son of a of an immigrant like I am, like you're not going to have any trace of obviously their accent.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: So, right.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: But my what I was going to say was I think before we got detoured into this was that we always talk about Acts of just horror and tear at the airport and I do want to spotlight what instance of human kindness before we get into the Well, but let's go max cross be situation, which is
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I mean, and this was all happening, by the way, I'm like flight to California.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: There might be some hints of humankind, this and there will get to that.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but yeah, we'll see about that.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: But so on the flight, I look and I'm in middle seat in a six hour cross country flight, which is already dicey, right?
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: And the woman in the window seat looks up and says, hey, do you want the window seat?
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I was just like,
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean a hundred percent who says no to that and so Things are going well, but I packed incorrectly for California.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: I left my coat in my suitcase.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so I don't have I'm just wearing like a golf shirt.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's negative six thousand degrees right and I'm by the window I'm shaking.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: I have a blanket.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: They give you a blanket right
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: And then this lady somehow russles up two more blankets and gets them on me So that I can have like a like I don't know who this lady is, but like God bless you.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: I mean that was like a window The window is the prime seat for the for the right eye.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: No question the window is the prime seat because it's easier to sleep on the only Is you can read against the side of the point you can lean against side of the plane, but when it's so cold outside
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: like that's where all the cold air is also and so like it does complicate factors there, but this lady wrestled me up like two extra blankets.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: She gave me the window seat like if you're out there, I doubt you listen to a football podcast, but if you do, thank you to that lady, because I'm here now.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: Being able to talk about Max Crosby and Albert, what a goddamn mess.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is a
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: This is a straight-up god damn mess like like I don't even know how else to put it so we should probably go through um we should probably like kind of dig through the uh the mechanics of it and like how we got here right yeah so like I mean that's important because I don't expect people to know the mechanics of how a trade happens um but
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is the important.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple of interesting twists here to this story that I think people don't know that got us to where we are.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, when you're coming down the stretch of a trade, and I think you know this corner,
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Basically, what will happen is the team that's trading the player will give their trainer permission to talk to the other teams trainer.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: At that point, there will be an exchange of medical information.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's an NFL system that houses all this information as well.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so they'll be able to trade all of the pertinent medical information.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: And so because of that.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: their generally aren't very many surprises when a team actually gets its hands on a player, right?
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Which is why so many other teams were kind of offended their senses to see it go down this way.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, generally, you get a guy in for a physical, you know what you're getting.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's, it just is, you know, it's most of its black and white.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a great level of trust between medical people and trainers across the league.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: They don't lie to each other, you know?
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: So there's that piece of it and that happened on Friday morning where, you know, the raiders allowed for the Ravens people to go through the medical records and they traded information and they talk.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: And so at that point, like they have a baseline.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Now, one of my first questions.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if anybody else had this question, but maybe it's just the way that my mind works was, well, why the hell didn't the Ravens put Max Crosby on a plane right away?
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: That was my exact question.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so here's the reason.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: So Max Crosby had a longstanding scheduled sobriety anniversary party, which is very significant for him personally, right?
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: 100%.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: that was Saturday night.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I believe Shibuzi played that party.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's Shibuzi.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: You can't back out.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: I think Shibuzi would play that party.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: There was video of them on the internet.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: So when they were talking about, okay, like when do we bring you out?
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's out west and it's Friday night when the trade gets done.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you just have your
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: come out here and that was the way they set it up.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: So Saturday night, Sunday, you know, you know, just hang out chill, Monday morning, come on in.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: So Monday morning, he flies.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's a three hour time difference.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: So he doesn't get to Baltimore until early evening,
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: on Monday on Monday.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: So now it's, we'll just come in Tuesday morning and we'll do the physical.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's how much of a formality this was seen as, you know, and so then Tuesday morning he comes in and they get their hands on him and obviously.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: that's where everything changed.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: So that piece of the mechanics I think is really important as to how we got here is Friday the exchange of medical information happens Tuesday we don't Tuesday were sitting there and like oh my god what happened you know what I mean like Tuesday night.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_00]: So that piece of it I think is important.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the other piece that I think is really pertinent and I know you know this.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't black and white, it's not a pass fail, like a pass fail in school, right?
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: They more or less give you a score or a grade medically, like that's the way these things work.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so for example in the draft, the way this would work is your doctor, say a guy is a degenerative, like a really good player, but it has a degenerative knee condition, right?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: So let's just say that player exists in this year's draft.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the doctor might say, I'm going to give him a score that makes it okay for my coaches, my GM to take this guy in the fourth round.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: But I cannot sign off on making a first round investment in the guy.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the same I as the veteran players, obviously.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: And so, if Max Crosby were traded for a seventh round pick and was making $5 million this year, you know what?
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens probably passive, right?
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: Well, this becomes gray is the investment that they're making.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Because this becomes a much more serious decision, and so the risk assessment equation is completely different.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so now the risk assessment equation is completely different.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you're Eric DeCosta and the doctor comes to you and says,
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, man, like, because this was never about, whether it would be ready for week one, the doctor looks at, like, I don't know, man, like, by the end of 2027, we might have a problem here.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, this is a longevity issue, and that's what the injury that he had is, like, would create, it can be, I mean, the the Manuscus injury can, can be a precursor for arthritis, usually is a precursor for arthritis.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, now if you're air at the cost, you might still really like the player in the here and now, but can you justify turning over two first-round picks for him?
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: or not.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's the question.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: And the Raiders are pissed and justifiably so I would be too.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it like does it as efficient?
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like it does seem fishy, you know?
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: And do I believe that they were going to acquire both masks across being triandrics?
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: And no, I don't.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't believe that.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think they may have been pursuing both of them, but they weren't going to, there was no way they were, I don't think there was any way they were going to get both of them.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I think Trey Hendrickson was a pivot off of, off of Crosby when they saw the worst trouble with Crosby, you know.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, it's like, I think it's like the cost is said, it's like, it's, it's hard because it's like sort of, what are you supposed to do?
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, you're kind of between all rock and hard place at that point because you're either going to violate the trust of the Raiders, which again, the Raiders have a reason to be pissed off.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: They gave them all the medical information.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like they were hiding anything, right?
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: So you either violate the trust of the Raiders, violate the trust of Max Crossby, or you do something that could be damaging for your franchise that might not be responsible per your doctors.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where you are.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: The other part of this to me and to everybody, right, that I think is critical is the timing of when the Raven's first made contact with Tray Hendrixon and then there's some other kind of background information that I think is worth sharing here.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: We're being honest about it, like they were, they were, they, I'm sure they talked to us to us agent of the combine.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, sure, right, but I think here's where it looks, and this is what I wrote after Albert, I said, it doesn't really matter.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the truth obviously matters, but it doesn't in the sense that,
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: the order of events unfolded so nefariously that it's going to be impossible for the larger population to accept the fact that this is just a timeline of random inconveniences.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I think what's what's deeply troubling about it,
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: is that Baltimore did have a famous failed physical under-decaused a before this in 2018, which was a very healthy, Ryan Grant for Michael Crabtree, when Michael Crabtree became available.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: And so doing that, and then spinning it forward to this time, where again, I mean, all this could be happening on a totally reasonable timeline,
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know Eric DeCosta to be in a nefarious individual.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that some people have those reputations some don't.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: I have not heard that about him in my 15 years of covering the NFL.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: But when you get to the point where you maybe start to pivot toward
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: starts to dip below what we expected it to dip below and whatever only slightly, I think that adds to the what's going on here factor for a lot of people, right?
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: And and and I'll spin it forward like this.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the I think that the Ravens are to blame.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think the Raiders a little biter to blame and are kind of scurting blame here because again, I mean, I understand Crosby had his long plan celebration, but if you're a GM or anything like that, you got to know that it's buttoned up and you can't go out and spend over a quarter billion dollars without knowing that it's buttoned up, right?
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think that it's
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, how many of those do you think we're going to come back?
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I have to have the list in front of me.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Winter bomb no.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: I say lightly.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, likely maybe.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: Um, likely, maybe.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to have to pull up the Ravens loss is okay.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: So, um, I think Charlie Colar or likely.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think they probably, I think there's a good chance they bring one or the other back.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: You would assume records gone because that's going to be a different kind of offense.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: They would need cards gone.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think Linda Baum the price was just too much.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: I know they were trying to keep Dreyman Jones was where they were willing to go to 10 million.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's believable to me, like that, like if, you know, if you're not, like because Crosby hears a thing about Crosby too, is Crosby wasn't going to, Crosby is comfortable going into 2025 or 2025, or 26 on his current contract.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: But it was what the thought that potentially I could be in for another huge pages is last year of guaranteed money, right?
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I play well and will Anderson, Jr. signs that I could be looking at 50.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean, like after this year.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think that's part of the equation too.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: You can't look at like, try Hendricks in.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's gonna be asking for $50 million after the year.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: That could happen with Max Crosby, which makes it harder to justify bringing Drainman Jones back, who they were trying to bring back.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I would say, and then the other one maybe be Jordan Stout, which like, that's like a little easier to wrap your head around, you know what I mean?
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like where, like, I think it's one of, I think it's the guys that will be in question for me,
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe they bring back one of the tight ends, or dream on Jones or Stout, not all three, but maybe they have somebody in that group that they're able to bring back.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: Here's my thought, and I'm curious what your take is on this, and it's funny.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: We have cute names for both of these things, legal tampering period, which we all think is very funny.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I, so this is what I'm asking, right?
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: I've made fun of too much.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's like when we, I personally take credit for shaming them out of calling a super, super, super wild car weekend.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: With a hat tip, a hat tip to Matt Mike Silver also.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think me and Mike Silver's joint effort to make them, make them feel like idiots for the just, a ass-in-ine, ass-in-ine, renaming a wild car weekend when they added a third one.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: Super!
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, calling a super wild car weekend because you added the 13th and 14th best teams in the league and watered down the playoffs is astronaut and deserves mockery.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: And we successfully shame them out of calling that, calling it that anymore.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think all the legal tampering jokes have shamed them out of calling it that anymore.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think they call it the negotiating period.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know our friend Brian McCarthy tweeted something out there earlier in the week, but
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think B. Mac might be a little disappointed to me that I'm going to read the column, but that happens quite a bit.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, he's a good guy for taking it and stride, but we have negotiating period.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: They've really taken the issue of South of that one.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's what's called on his Twitter.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: So we have that, and we have the coaching care cell, and in both situations,
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: what's happening here is that you're compressing very serious decisions that involve on the coaching front like background checks, personality exams, like staffing concerns and issues, like player fits, all that kind of stuff.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: And on the free agency and medical evaluations, personality evaluation, scheme fit evaluations.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: And while you're of course thinking about this
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: for, in a good GM has an action plan, you're cramming in the consummation of all these things into an insanely compressed window where other people are also competing for the same people that you want.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so this is how it happens where, for example, you know, the coaches hired and this coach has a glaring legal issue in his background that just didn't come up because the team went through the process so fast that they didn't have time to conduct how do you expect a process then what's that how you saw down.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think for free agency it's easy, it's just like the seasons over and it doesn't baseball, it's like, all right, seasons over, we take like a month off and then it's hot stove baby and then you just, you start cooking like who gives it shit?
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, I think one thing that you could look at here, um, that I think would be interesting, when I first started covering the
- 21:23[SPEAKER_00]: the combine led right and the start of free agency.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that like honestly like the NFL,
- 21:31[SPEAKER_00]: the NFL wanted to space these things out because they wanted to turn like each into like a tent pole of the offseason and I get that.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like I remember like when the combine was right before free agency like there's the famous Albert Haynes restore here where that one right like that him and Dan Snyder got caught together at the Capitol Grill and Indianapolis.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: And so and so like I
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: I, like, I think that that would create, like, an organic, everybody can talk to everybody type of scenario, you know, and you just maybe look the other way on it, you know what I mean?
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like, because I, I just, I think,
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you, and again, like, it'd be hard to get the NFL to move off of its spot on this, you know, like, I don't know.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: It'd be really hard to get the NFL to move up because they want these to be events.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: They don't care about the functionality of it, but like I think.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: Coming out of an event where everybody is in one place at one time and a lot of these negotiations are happening like in a time sense since they changed it what a lot of the What the what a lot of the agents and teams will tell you is that like because it's too far off now nobody's really showing their cards.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: But everybody's just trying to sort of set markets and determine where, you know, okay, like this is where this position is the top of this position is over here and you're trying to determine all of that.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: But nobody's actually putting their cards on the table when it comes to like specific players or on the player side specific which specific team they're going to, you know, right.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe if you readjusted the calendar back and maybe this happens naturally when they move the Super Bowl back.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good one.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: This pushes it into it, but I do think that there was like a, to me like there was like a functional benefit from the free agent market opening right at the end of the combine.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: Here's my thing though, right, because now we have situations where, and the NFL is going to survive all this, right, so it's not like it's going to be, it's not like it's going to matter, but with the speed of the coaching search, for example, what you're essentially doing is every year you're bastardizing the Rooney rule a little bit more, and you're making a rule that is meant to prevent.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: racist hiring practices feel even more racist, right, at their core, right, an offensive and, you know, that has the potential to cause some long term damage.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I think this free agency period.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let me add this to the coaching search thing.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: that compressed time frame and window, mixes in the added pressure of doing things like the cardinals had to do with Jonathan Ganon, whereas to have impermecible contact with a coach who's trying to prepare a team to win the Super Bowl.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: Okay?
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: That hurts the product.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: And what we had with Max Crosby hurts the product.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason that it hurts the product is because once that Max Crosby deal is consummated
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: all the other decisions that happen with 31 other teams are related to that trade right now the edge market changes now everybody else's plan of attack changes the cowboys who were theoretically uh in on max crossbeat go get rishon gary the raiders who think that they got rid of max crossbeat now we know genos miss out and there's a world when the raiders went in the
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: But they sign coolity pay in Malcolm Coons.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and both those players were on the impression they're coming into start.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: Now with Max Crosby coming back, one of them will.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: Right, and that impacts their livelihood, their chances of getting another contract.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe the raiders would let one or two of them out of that, you know, whatever.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, well, they could have, those guys could have walked away from those deals.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: Right, because it was still an negotiating period, you know, but obviously, obviously that hasn't happened.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: And so, and so you have this cascading,
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: thing, where a bunch of teams now are either suboptimal.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: in terms of their free agency plan, the Raiders are certainly suboptimal financially, unexpectedly.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: They probably didn't get to attack free agency the way they wanted to because they thought they had another first round pick in their hit pocket.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, all this stuff gets messed up and I get it, the NFL like you can make the argument that these teams are always scrambling and they're always trying to find answers for stuff
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: But it's impossible to say that what happened with Crosby really stepped up a bunch of stuff and it lessons the value of the product.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, is that, is that true?
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: Is that not true?
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and again, like I don't know, I think that's fair.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I mean, it sucks.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: It affects so many people, you know what I mean?
- 26:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like it does, it affects a ton of people.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_00]: Again, like, you know, I mentioned the guys in Baltimore, maybe one of those guys wanted to stay and what have stayed, if Baltimore could go a little further and then Baltimore can't go a little further because the money's tied up in cross people.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: But now it's not tied up in cross people so they could have gotten a little further to keep them.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: So there are all kinds of scenarios that you can look at that.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like in this, just, it's just a sort of the cascading effect that reaches from the tops of our authors, the bottoms of our authors.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, again, it's just, it's really hard.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: And, and here's the reality of it, too.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: And this is another thing with football that's different than the other sports.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and the other sports, there are a higher percentage of the players have the leverage.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: So the best players are going to control the pace and the tenor of the free agent market.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like in baseball, correct me if I'm wrong here, the free agent market like lingers for like three or four months, like where there are guys just out there, you know, right.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_00]: And those guys all know, well, you know, eventually I'm going to get a job somewhere.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: And this team isn't going to, like this team doesn't have another option of me.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: Because there's a scarce, the amount of people that can do what I do, so I can sit out there in the market, and basketball, like those guys can take tours, and like going and visit the facilities and all that stuff.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: The reality is, in football, there are very few people, very few players that are truly different than everybody else.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: that are in a position where it's not like, well, if I don't sign you, I'm just going to sign this other guy.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and that's the product that's part of the problem with with it in football is that you're talking about a league that's got 2,000 players in it.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: The rosters have 53 guys on them and teams have to be aggressive about filling those rosters out.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so because of that and because
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: again there aren't like so many unique players you might have four guys in a cluster that you view relatively similarly at a certain position and if there are seven teams looking to fill that position and one guy's asking you to wait that guy what could wind up being screwed you know anything like because now you know the teams are gonna jump all right we'll go to this guy we'll go to that guy or sorry we're gonna spend that money in another position we're just gonna
- 29:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's a different dynamic in football and the challenge of putting rules around that that make it work for everybody or enormous and they haven't been able to solve that.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess the way it's always been, you know, it's the same thing as like, I mean, shoot, like if you want to go back and look, right, if you want to go back and look at like what this was like when they pretended that the members, when this tampering period first came into
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: You want a lot of talk numbers and everything.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then there'd be two days where there's this information vacuum.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_00]: And then I remember there was that one year when Chefter had like 25 weeks like ready to go for three minutes.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_00]: You remember that?
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: I do remember that.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: I remember what year it was, but it was like like free agency like lasted like 13 minutes.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: And like, I'm sure Adams, I'm sure Adams, like he boarding is in a high level, you don't get to a high level, the level it, few of us are at, like without being, being fast with their fingers, but I, like, I tend to think that maybe he had some of those drafted beforehand, you know, which, no, which means the rules may have been broken, you know, so I just don't know if there's a, there's really a right way to do this, you know.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think baseball is a little more preferable.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: But again, the issue with baseball is that baseball, there are like guys who are still free agents now.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, so I don't know if that's best either.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's cool, though.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, but I would say this too with baseball, right?
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's, it's uncapped.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so, and, well, there is a luxury tax.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: Great.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like, let's see what happened.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the cap only adds to the musical chair's element, right?
- 31:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, because once the cash and cap budgets are spent, and roster start to fill up, there are less chairs out there.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like, let's see what happened with the Raiders got.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_01]: way out of control.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the worst that could happen to the Raiders in baseball is that they get dinged like whatever it is another 20 million in luxury tax right.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: If if what happened with the Raiders got truly out of control this year, um, like does the NFL help them get under like these are the big questions that I have like what happens if.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: Jerry Jones still, I'm gonna get myself in a little bit of trouble here, still cared about winning a Super Bowl and freaked out that he traded for a Sean Gary after this happened.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like what happens if the most powerful owner and sports freaks out that this happens?
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: What happens if the if the jets, if the cowboys, if like eight of these teams lose their
- 32:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, what does the NFL do?
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like if if everything that we've been talking about for two days in the legal tampering period gets unplugged and everybody becomes free agents again, like what would have happened?
- 32:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I honestly think in this, you could tell me if I'm crazy.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we were that far from that scenario.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't because if you're these teams, it's like, I got to get this right or I'm going to be fired.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_01]: So it's bullshit that it went this way and so I'm unplugging everything.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's back in the pool.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know how close I don't think we were that.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think we were, it's like whatever.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: I moved the doomsday clock closer to midnight.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't quite at midnight.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: But like, what happens if that happens?
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and now we've seen the, we've seen the picture of chaos and what could happen?
- 33:02[SPEAKER_00]: I guess if that makes sense.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this was certainly chaos, you know, and again, I don't know how you would roll the clock back on that, like, and then just be like, ready, psycho again, but it's, it's interesting anyway.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, where do you think we go from here?
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, here's the thing.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: I wrote this.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: I don't, and you know, when you write something with opinion, you're in the heat of the moment, I think that as it goes on, this will soften teams will trade again with the Ravens.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like everybody's gonna be like dubious of everything.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's like one of those things time.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: He also owns a guy.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe over the next six months, if you're doing a deal with the Ravens,
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: be careful about the way you execute it or but I mean, I don't think it's going to look like all these guys have to do what's best for them, you know what I mean and best for their teams.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: And so you know if if they're working with the ravens on a trade, you know, like then, you know, and that trades with best for their team, it's like, you know, what are you going to do?
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: Not do the trade because of the max cross resituation.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: It just seems unlikely to me.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_00]: and it seems like one of those things where, you know, like, you're probably maybe a little more careful now, but you know, in 2028, or you're still going to be thinking that way, probably not.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: But I'll tell you what, Triandrics and made out like a bandit in this one.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_01]: You can tell me if I'm misreading this, but I mean, we talked a little bit about it during our winners and losers.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think that there was probably an initial mystery on the market by Trey Hendrix and his people.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: But then to only land a million dollars, you'll throw it.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, first of all, I brought to you again.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really believe, I don't really believe that they were going to be able to pull off getting both cries being hundreds.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: And like this was a pivot.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like I was just call it what it is, like going to Hendrix and was a pivot.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_00]: If they'd offered Hendrix in 28 on Monday, he would have been a Raven on Monday.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: And the market wasn't where Tray wanted to be over 30.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's where he felt like his value was and look like I don't think he's out of line for asking for that all these numbers sound huge now But the top of that market right now is what micah at 46 and aiden Hutchinson at at 45 right?
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so like If you're asking for over 30, that's two thirds of the market, you know, like and he's been a really good player Had a really weird year last year and I think
- 35:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I'd say war out as welcome in Cincinnati last year after like a few really tough years, but 17 and a half sacks and 23, 17 and a half sacks and 24.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: And you hope that you can recreate that if you're the Ravens.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: God, what a,
- 35:50[SPEAKER_01]: So what a bleep show.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: And that happened while I was on my flight out to California.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so to have you were on the plane.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like that was an interesting I was I was I was I went to bed on Tuesday at well I guess it was Wednesday technically at like 2 a.m. and then I had to wake up at like 545.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: So yesterday was a little bit of a slog for me.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: Um, we got it done.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_00]: I like, do you, do you ever pass out right this is where like we talked about like dip the other day right like and how dip can help you right.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think we talked about was that that was you.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: I had that.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: Correct.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so like, like my Tuesday night was one of those nights for like a like a pinch of skull winter green probably would have helped me finish my column a little faster.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't do that anymore.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I did pass out.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_01]: Um,
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: I had, because, and I'm, and I'm glad I ended up working out that way.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: So when we, when I got to California, I had, what I, I wrote on the airplane, what I thought I wanted to say about Max Crosby, and then talk to our editors a little bit.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: And they're like, well, I don't be waiting till the morning, because, you know, at this point, it's,
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: whatever.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's one o'clock in the morning Eastern and so maybe something happens overnight that adds to the development of that, but I was like, okay, I was determined to just like finish the last couple sentences of that column and then I woke up, you know, fully clothed and you're in your hotel bed with the laptop still open, you know, which is, you know, it's never.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: never what you want, but that's part of life, you know, not how you drew it up.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Not how you drew it up.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on here because I mean, listen, we could talk about this for hours.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think that there's going to be, I mean, it is great content.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_01]: It is, it is great content.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: I will say the last thing, though,
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: The Raiders are clearly pissed.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: Is there a world where they, where they step, would they take this thing to the parking lot and ask the league to look into it?
- 37:52[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't know.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the problem is the gray area that I laid out.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: There's so much gray area for them for the ravens to work through there.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't know what you would be.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what you would be banging them for.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you can't officially consummate a trade until Wednesday, right?
- 38:12[SPEAKER_00]: So like, I mean, we know how this stuff works, but like, we're talking about theoretical trades and theoretical signings until Wednesday or four Eastern.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_00]: And so like it's hard to enforce anything when it wasn't allowed, you weren't allowed to have an official agreement in place anyway.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I do think by the way, I just put a ball on.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: I do think he'll play for the Raiders this year.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: I felt that way for the last 24 hours.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think some of the broken trust think the way that the Raiders handled that was totally, I really, like honestly, the Raiders have taken a lot of hits justifiably over the last couple of years.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: I do think like the way that the guys in charge handled this.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_00]: We'll score them points with their players.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: We'll help Clint Kubey act build a build a program there.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think Max Crosby went through this, like some of his trust with the Raiders because the whole outskirts, we don't have to go over that again, was fractured.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think they went a long way and having his back through this to rebuild that trust.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: And so now I think they go forward and Max gets to play on a different team with a different defense around him.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think the Raiders
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because of the, like, you're not going to be able to get close to what you got from the Ravens and not just because you're trying to redo the trade now, the market's smaller.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the Ravens failing him on the physical has a chilling effect on his on his trade value.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_00]: I know that their team can't, like, I mean, if you're another team,
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like here's the thing like say like your GM or your coach, like you have to think about like the investment your owners making in this and it's like part of the equation has to be how bad am I going to look if this guy starts breaking down in 2027 and I traded for him after the Ravens five that right build them like it's going to look really bad.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so I think the one scenario where he could eventually wind up being traded is maybe he gets off to a banana start to the season, which I think he's me highly motivated to do that and the Raiders still aren't very good and somebody gives him a godfather offer before the deadline, but I think he's going to at least start the season as a Raider.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I didn't think about that.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you're Crosby.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess you're running out of time to cat, although Trey Hendricks and just got $30 million here, you know, up to $30 million here at the age 32.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I think if you're Crosby, this is a virally impacts your ability to take one more bite at the apple, which sucks.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I do wonder what his feelings are personally on this and motivations.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: God if, you know, I think it was,
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: I forget who was the tweet of this, but it's like, if the NFL really wants to lean into this, we got to find a way to get the Raiders and Ravens on the same schedule together this year, just to see what happened.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, who knows, they won't be seeing each other in the playoffs.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: I could tell you that, um, let's, uh, because again, I mean, I could,
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: I could talk about this for hours.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of did, I felt like, even when I was out working on this other story, everyone is like, just what happened.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_01]: Amaze by this, you know, and so taken by it.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_01]: But let's talk about the quarterback market as of the taping of this at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 12th.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_01]: We have Kyler.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: seemingly on the doorstep with the Vikings, but also taking zoom meetings with teams that will need a quarterback in 2027.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: So he's essentially thinking about leapfrogging the free-age of market and what that might look like.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_01]: Do we have a better sense of where
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: All these guys are going to land grappleau, Kirk Cousins, some of these names that were familiar with that I still think it could be quality starters and my sub question to that is is Gardner mentioned that.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_01]: Is that what they're rolling with the Arizona?
- 42:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: What's your sense?
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what's going on?
- 42:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I do think Kyla winds up in Minnesota on a one year deal.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_01]: Minimum League minimum.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: And like a chance, uh, I think it's the what's best for him.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's probably what's best for the Vikings at this point.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to see what what K.L.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_00]: can do with them there.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's a real chance for them.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I think there's a chance for that to be a good
- 42:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, going back to him, I might have written the two months ago, like I thought he was going to the Cardinals.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, just because I know what that ram staff thought of him, how much they think of him.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_00]: And it does make me wonder, did he overshoot his market a little, you know, and that they decide to bring in gardener min shoe.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: But Minshu's deal is at a level where you could.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't know if you wanted it, but you could still bring Jimmy Garoppolo in.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: And she's open a competition among the three of them, Berset Garoppolo, Minshu.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_00]: Either way, I think the Cardinals are doing a lot of teams are doing right now.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think the browns are doing it.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think the jets are doing it.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think our animals are doing it, which is bridging the 2027.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, I do a radio show every week with Brady Quinn and we were talking about all the different quarterbacks in next year.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: Can he still play at this point?
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he looks great.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-oh, uh, you know, maybe I'll reach out to the old right hand or in C.F.E.B.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_01]: Available for the, uh, I always believed in but he was one of my favorite Notre Dameers of all time.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was like peak high school, Connor years where it was like Brady Quinn to Jeff Somarja.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: I just always thought he was going to be a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we were going through some of the names and like, I mean, it's,
- 44:06[SPEAKER_00]: Dante Moore, CJ Carr, Arch Manning, Trinity, Chambles, Mayava, a U.S.C.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: Sam, Levitt at LSU, Julian Sane, and it'll hire a state-lenorrous sellers.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: Brady informed me of this guy, Mesta Maker, who I'm not really all that aware of, was at North Texas, is now transferred to Oklahoma State.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_00]: DJ Lagoe was a high-end recruit of Florida, now at Baylor.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like there's, so there's, I mean, there's just like a lot of names, you know what I mean?
- 44:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and the point I made to him, which I, I'd make here too, is there's no, like, Caleb Williams or Drake may.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: three years ago in 2023, we knew like at this point in 23, that in 24 of those guys were gonna be top five picks, like same thing with Trevor Lawrence, if you remember, going back further, same thing with Justin Herbert, like there were just certain got like, and I don't know that there's anybody that I put in that category, but there are so many of them.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's like a dozen of them.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: And so if there's a dozen of them,
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: maybe five hit and now you have five first round quarterbacks and a lot of these guys have the physical ability so I think what the cardinals are doing is bridging the same way the jets are bridging the same way the browns are bridging I'm sure you can give me a couple other teams that are doing this just looking at the draft order you know but and you know everybody recognizes that
- 45:30[SPEAKER_00]: Fernando Mendoza is going first the Raiders and then after that you might not have another franchise level of quarterback from a talent perspective in this year's draft.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, I know a lot of those teams are sort of planning now on, okay, like, how do we get to 20, 27?
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Miami, I think would be in that category too.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's hard, too, for some of these first year coaches, right?
- 45:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like you take Jeff Haffley and Miami and you take, you take Michael Flore and Arizona.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's how do you, how do you sort of marry the, we need to be drafting high enough to get one of these guys next year, but still feel competitive enough team and put a competitive enough quarterback out there.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_00]: where you can still sell your program because your players aren't going to be, I mean, 80% like 90% of your players aren't going to be into, oh yeah, like wait till next year.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: You still have to sell those guys on this year, which is why Jeff Halfway goes and gets Malik Wallace, you know, which is why, you know, Michael Floor is part of bringing in gardener mentioned.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, how can we create something where, you know, we're bridging the next year, but we're also at least giving our players a fighting chance to
- 46:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I thought, and I wrote this at the time.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I thought Malik Willis was one of the best moves in pre-agency because Malik is the perfect.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: bridge quarterback.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: I, I really like watching him.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: I had a lot of fun watching him, but I think I could probably, you know, if you were to force me to put all my life savings on poly market as to whether I think this guy will be the Dolphin's quarterback for beyond the next season and a half, I would say no.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I just think that's the nature of the league, you know.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_01]: what the dolphins did and I think is brilliant is they're going to draft a quarter back next year but what they did for now was that they just bought the idea of effort and potential and possibility right which is fun like at the very worst Albert
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: Malik Willis and HN on the field together is going to be fun, okay, and, and, and, and if it works, great, and, and then you extended and you don't need to draft a quarterback if it doesn't work and I put work in air quotes because what's going to happen is.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_01]: Dolphins will probably miss the playoffs.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: Half Leo start feeling it in a second year, same with the GM.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_01]: So that's when you bring in the rookie quarterback.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_01]: We've just seen this life cycle too many times to not assume that that's how it's gonna take shape.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: And then Willis will be on to his next team.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: But I think he fulfills that.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas,
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: If you're Arizona, like, and you're the floor, and you've got to set the tone in your one gardener and choose a tough poll.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know what I mean?
- 48:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's a tough, you know, even the first four weeks of the season, like, is any fan showing up and being like, yeah, buddy, like, this is what I'm paying on $50 to take it for, you know?
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, well, I mean, it's even more important for your players have to believe it too, you know what I mean?
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's a big piece of this is like, how do you sell your players on like you should buy into everything we're doing?
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to give you the best chance to succeed, so then you're rolling in the year two, you know?
- 48:55[SPEAKER_00]: And you do have to give them a chance, and I think,
- 48:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's sort of, I think the jets last year sort of the cut, because I think Aaron Glenn has a lot of call qualities to be a really good, a really good, hey coach, but.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like, were they doing enough to sell their players on?
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to give you guys a chance this year.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: Or, you know, Justin Fields doesn't play very well.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: And then you start dumping, you know, veteran players.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: It starts to feel like a death march for everybody.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and like, you do need to establish like a baseline of, like, here's what we're going to be.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I'm looking to build.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: here's like our path there and no we're not there yet but we're going to give you guys some light at the end of the tunnel where you guys can perform well enough to keep your careers going, perform at a high level individually and we're able to establish something as a team that can be lasting.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_00]: You can't just like, we're not dealing with robots here.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 49:58[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't Madden.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, you can't just be bad for like, you just can't be like bad for a couple of years and expect like that these 24, 25, 25, 26 year old guys that have put their entire life into making it there are gonna continue to buy into what you're doing.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_00]: You can't write, you know?
- 50:17[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think that there has to be an immediate
- 50:23[SPEAKER_01]: at least show of potential.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_01]: And potential gets you through year one progress gets you through year two playoffs gets you through year three.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's the coaching.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_01]: You're taking over truly a truly bad program.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the best example is the Niners in 2017.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_00]: where they had, I mean, they had been through, they had fired coaches three years in a row, right?
- 50:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like the fire harbour, they fired Tom Sula, they fired ship, and then, you know, like the roster is sort of a wasteland, and they were really bad at being that year, they trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_00]: And at the end of that year, they win,
- 51:06[SPEAKER_00]: five in a row or six in a row, I think they were like oh and nine and then one in ten and then they won five in a row and get to six and ten and that was really significant for them.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now the next year Jimmy tears his ACL and they're bad again, but at that point you've already shown the players we've got something here, you know what I mean and then they make the Super Bowl in year three.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: Even if you're not very good and everybody knows it because these guys aren't stupid, you have to give them some sort of like, this is where we're going and here's why you want to be a part of this.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_00]: And Kyle very clearly did that.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like everybody knew, everybody was there knew like, Kyle's taking this play, that this thing somewhere, you know.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_01]: Um, let's play a quick game before we get out of here.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I'm going to just, and again, we're not be holding to this, but in the theme of the quarterback market, uh, I'm going to just list some teams and let's both fire out.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, uh, I prospective starting quarterback.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um, Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_01]: Las Vegas Raiders, I think we up.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let me ask you this.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_01]: Las Vegas Raiders week 1.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think Mendoza, but I wouldn't rule out like a Kurt Cousins or something like that.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, because Brady has done a bunch of interviews about how he said that Drew Bletsow was instrumental in.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think Cousins could wind up in Indianapolis also.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: Really, oh, I liked that.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're talking.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go to the Minnesota Vikings week one Skyler.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: The Falcons.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is like a medical question, right?
- 53:07[SPEAKER_00]: It is a medical.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_00]: It is a little like a question.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 53:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be really close, really close.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'll say panics because they're invested in them.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_00]: But I think there's a real shot.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's to a, like I think this is going to be close.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I say that because he's got so much history with the knees.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's just, I, you know, why this is why this is a fourth torn ACL, third, I believe.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: because he didn't, well he's hair and tore each of them and caught.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it maybe tore one twice.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_00]: I can't remember if it was the same, but there were multiple.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think this, I think it's the second time he's torn whichever ACL it is.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, or maybe it's not, I got him.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_00]: Either way, I think it's a tough recovery.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think that wasn't really close.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_01]: Cardinals were looking at a good, Jacobi Percept.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think Persepetta mentioned, yeah.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then she was your, is your number two.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then did I ask you about the Vikings?
- 54:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Kyler, Kyler.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so would you agree with that?
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: Would you, would you, would you go the other way?
- 54:16[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think I would change it.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: I go Daniel Jones and Andy.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: I do think he'll make it back.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: For sure.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_01]: So that leaves like Kirk Cousins relegated to a back up role.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_01]: Jimmy Garoppolo relegated to a back up role.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_01]: Joe Flacco relegated to a back up role again.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's, you know, and yeah, there's some,
- 54:34[SPEAKER_00]: I do wonder with Garoppolo if he's playing the long game here and that like a staffer to retire because he really likes it in LA and McVay really likes him.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like is he maybe playing a little bit of the long game there, you know, like where it's like, hey, you know, if Matthew or tires after this year, then I'm at the very least their bridge, you know, and then I'm in a position to kind of, you know, put my career back on the tracks and that could be somebody's
- 55:02[SPEAKER_00]: short-term long-term answer or whatever you put that longer term for short-term.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a long week.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_01]: It has been a long week, but we appreciate you all.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_00]: Can I give you one trade I liked?
- 55:23[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_00]: I like the miners acquiring Osada
- 55:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I mean, I think the Niners have had an excellent free agency.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Niners is quite like, because I think you put him in the room them with the young guys they have, the two they drafted last year, Alfred Collins, and CJ West, and Yadnik Bosa coming back like, I don't know.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_00]: It just seemed like a logical move for them.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_00]: They have four, I think, fourth round picks.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: So not having the third isn't the end of the world for them.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_00]: Look, I think they...
- 55:53[SPEAKER_00]: Again, this is like kind of like them playing the compensatory formula, they've got three, four-throw compensatory picks and it allows them a flexibility to move the three to go and get a really good player who's like a attacking three technique with a perfect fit for them.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was a radar there, but I like that one.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: Kansas City and San Francisco, both probably did the most to me in free agency to set themselves up for a legitimate rebound, Super Bowl run.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I would say.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_00]: And they both have higher than usual picks in the draft.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_00]: we're going to keep track of it all as we as we wind down here and as I try to take Albert's advice and not simply collapse into a pile of us the key fight through like that's what you always say when when you go to Europe that's what they always tell you right like because that's the same sort of dynamic you're flying over there overnight and they always say make it through the first day stay up till 11 o'clock and then go to bed and you'll be reset two cups of coffee down what will happen
- 57:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'll let you guys know on Monday.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks so much.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk real quick.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're time to do wake up on Wednesday.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yesterday.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: Our two days ago, holy go.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you're there.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I woke up at like four a.m.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: But instead of doing the whole, Staniske's coast time.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: Staniske's coast time, I was like, oh yeah, normally I have like a million kids in my bed.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I was like, it's just so nice.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then I just rolled over and I went back to bed until like, 730, what, Pacific time.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so, I'm a little, I'm a little screwed up, but I'm gonna fight through it.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're gonna get you and we'll see you guys on Monday
