- 1:29Speaker 1: of nineteen fifty and the title is The Sword of Sabo.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Get This and Get It straight. Crime is a Sucker's
- 1:38Speaker 2: road knows who travel had wind up in the gut
- 1:40Speaker 2: of the prison of the Grave. This time I started
- 1:42Speaker 2: with a Roumanian from left Field, got misled in the
- 1:45Speaker 2: Philippine Jungles, chased the beautiful blonde clear of venice, and
- 1:48Speaker 2: wound up with a friend from Siam, all without every
- 1:51Speaker 2: leaving Los Angeles. It happened like this.
- 1:55Speaker 3: From the pen of Raymond Trembler, outstanding author of crime fiction,
- 1:58Speaker 3: comes his most famous grin the Adventures of Philip Marlowe.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe, we bring
- 2:15Speaker 3: you tonight's exciting story, The Sword of Save Boot.
- 2:44Speaker 4: You could tell me where is the office of Philip Marlowe,
- 2:47Speaker 4: the Detective?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Maybe? Yeah, sure, right around the corner here your left.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Oh, thank you very.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Much, my friend.
- 2:53Speaker 2: You know this mister Marlowe? Y, yes, I think you
- 2:56Speaker 2: could say I know him.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Tell me he is a reliable man.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Depends on what you want to rely on him for.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Excuse me, what you want to want to lock the door?
- 3:05Speaker 2: You are Philip marlow Yeah, you're so right. Come on in,
- 3:08Speaker 2: mister never.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Mind, now listen to me. I will pay you twice
- 3:12Speaker 4: what Henry Pound has offered to you. Also, I will
- 3:15Speaker 4: add to that one thousand dollars for a bony.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Wait a minute, what is this Henry Pound?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Because please, please, I have not the time for haggling.
- 3:21Speaker 4: We may get two thousand dollars, but you must work
- 3:23Speaker 4: for me, not for Henry Pound. You only pretend to
- 3:26Speaker 4: work for him.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Now. Look, but in the first place, I haven't heard
- 3:28Speaker 2: from Henry Pound since I worked for him four years ago.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Second place, I still don't know who you are or
- 3:33Speaker 2: what you want. Maybe a better sitana over there, start
- 3:35Speaker 2: at the beginning and tell me lying.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Right to freak me very well tomorrow.
- 3:40Speaker 2: The short, nappy man with wild black hair turned suddenly savage,
- 3:43Speaker 2: swung a hard fistful of knuckles in my front teeth,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and pawed me back up against my office desk. By
- 3:47Speaker 2: the time I got out into the hall, he was gone.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I was gonna follow him with my phone screaming for
- 3:52Speaker 2: attention inside stop me. I decided to be philosophical about it.
- 3:56Speaker 2: After all, screwballs find me all the time.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Hello, Marlow Hell, this is Henry Pound. Remember me?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I just had a reminder.
- 4:04Speaker 7: I've been trying to get hold of you for two hours.
- 4:06Speaker 2: My boy, where have you been to dinner? And now
- 4:08Speaker 2: listen mister Pound.
- 4:08Speaker 8: I just first, Mardo, this is most important.
- 4:11Speaker 7: I need your help again immediately.
- 4:13Speaker 2: No doubt includes the stubby crumb with a head full
- 4:15Speaker 2: of wild black hair and a nasty tampa that left
- 4:17Speaker 2: here on the run ten seconds ago. Great Babisco, whatever
- 4:20Speaker 2: you call him, it's probably it Bibesco.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Great Babesco.
- 4:22Speaker 7: He's the one man I have reason to hear, Marlo,
- 4:25Speaker 7: come out here to my place at once, will you,
- 4:26Speaker 7: my boy? Oh, Henry Pound's future is dangling over a
- 4:29Speaker 7: very deep abyss by the merest threat all because the
- 4:33Speaker 7: sword is gone?
- 4:34Speaker 2: What sword? What sord are you talking about, mister Palm.
- 4:36Speaker 7: I'm the island of Simpo in the Philippines, the sword
- 4:38Speaker 7: of simple what it means everything to me, and it's
- 4:40Speaker 7: gone furnished.
- 4:42Speaker 6: I must have it back. Hurry Marlow.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Twenty minutes later, I pulled up in front of the
- 4:51Speaker 2: wall in jungle. Henry Pound called home and zig zagged
- 4:54Speaker 2: in through an okanawan at evil spirit gait waited past
- 4:58Speaker 2: the grove and dripping elephant airs and right a banana trees,
- 5:00Speaker 2: and finally made the front door the house itself from
- 5:04Speaker 2: turned up eaves to patch nipa and I must have
- 5:06Speaker 2: been gathered piece of me along the Pacific Islands, all
- 5:09Speaker 2: the way from Hokkaido to the New Hebrides. Was Henry
- 5:12Speaker 2: Pound himself once at the door, Oh.
- 5:14Speaker 8: Marlow, you know the only thing wrong with you is
- 5:18Speaker 8: I never get to see you except when I'm in trouble.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It's the business I'm in. Come in comm here. It's
- 5:25Speaker 2: quite a place you have here, mister Palm.
- 5:27Speaker 8: The islands by boy, Yes, it's business. Keeps me away
- 5:30Speaker 8: from them. I brought their atmosphere here to.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Me, even the music, all with the mosquitoes.
- 5:36Speaker 8: Oh shoeshoe, now stay away from underfoot?
- 5:39Speaker 2: Will you want to get shoeshoe ear? That's an albino Siamese.
- 5:44Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, it's quite unusual. But he sheds that abominable
- 5:47Speaker 8: white furve. He is like a common cat this type
- 5:50Speaker 8: of year. By the way, did you see my servant
- 5:53Speaker 8: high deck?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Was I supposed to?
- 5:55Speaker 8: When I couldn't reach you by phone, I sent him
- 5:57Speaker 8: down to your office to week roll.
- 5:58Speaker 2: He must have gotten lost then, no matter.
- 6:01Speaker 8: Let's get out the cases, my boy. Now sit down,
- 6:04Speaker 8: sit down and listen.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Close.
- 6:06Speaker 8: All my major business, as you remember, is importing pearls
- 6:11Speaker 8: from the Orient and since you worked for me last
- 6:14Speaker 8: I acquired a partner, a fine fellow named Boss in Manila.
- 6:18Speaker 8: With his contacts there and mine here in the stage,
- 6:20Speaker 8: we've been extremely successful.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I was either one who sent you that sort you mentioned.
- 6:23Speaker 8: Yeah, she arrived two days ago, but he said, over
- 6:26Speaker 8: half the curios you see in this room. That's why
- 6:29Speaker 8: I failed to realize that there was anything special about
- 6:32Speaker 8: the sort of Say boo.
- 6:33Speaker 2: What is so special about it, mister Palm?
- 6:35Speaker 6: Yeah, read this letter.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I got fuming, Henry. I'm certain now there's going to
- 6:40Speaker 2: be trouble from one Kurt Bibesco in particular. Yeah, However,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I've taken every precaution rest assured Henry that if anything
- 6:51Speaker 2: ever happens to me, I shall somehow get the complete
- 6:53Speaker 2: list of my contacts here into your hands. Sincerely, Eugene Voss.
- 6:57Speaker 8: Well, Eugene Voss was murgan four days ago in Manila,
- 7:01Speaker 8: murdered for that list of contact.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Do you think the sword ties in in some way?
- 7:06Speaker 8: Well, I'm positive of it.
- 7:08Speaker 2: What does it look like?
- 7:09Speaker 8: It's it's three feet long, Marlow. The handle and the
- 7:12Speaker 8: sheets are from the same gorgeous piece of white mahogany,
- 7:16Speaker 8: and literally covered with intricate and exquisite carving.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Sounds wonderful.
- 7:21Speaker 8: When the sword is in the sheets, the two pieces
- 7:23Speaker 8: form a complete pattern. I thought of it it once,
- 7:26Speaker 8: of course, but when I came in to examine it again,
- 7:29Speaker 8: it was gone stolen.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Naturally.
- 7:31Speaker 8: I called Junstead of the police. I've got to get
- 7:34Speaker 8: it back Morrow intact and without publicity.
- 7:37Speaker 2: White.
- 7:37Speaker 8: That sword is wait, Hi deca, hey, he's hurt, missa Palm.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Sorry he did not see hole, Missa Morrow.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Dick was attacked outside the minicure.
- 7:50Speaker 2: By a stocky guy with wild black hair.
- 7:52Speaker 6: Yes, he finds out where high Decky was going.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Then he tied not all high deck you remember, until
- 7:59Speaker 5: a few minutes ago when he worked up.
- 8:02Speaker 8: Do you need a doctor, hikky No.
- 8:04Speaker 5: No, thank you, just the same, Miss p Hi taky
- 8:07Speaker 5: already feel much better.
- 8:09Speaker 6: Well if you're sure.
- 8:10Speaker 8: If you were everywhere now you better go lie down.
- 8:13Speaker 6: Anyway, So thank you.
- 8:15Speaker 2: We washed your head first on to be ship shaped
- 8:17Speaker 2: more time. Very sorry.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Sorry, that explains how the bisco got to your office.
- 8:27Speaker 2: My boy, he's a hor man or yeah, but I
- 8:29Speaker 2: don't think the bestco has the sword. You see, he's
- 8:31Speaker 2: looking for it. He offered two thousand bucks to meet
- 8:33Speaker 2: a double cross you.
- 8:34Speaker 8: Oh, I can't understand it. The BESCO is the only
- 8:38Speaker 8: one who might know the truth about the sword. If
- 8:41Speaker 8: he didn't take it then, Oh so you're stupid.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Can't get out there. I knew it.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Now, see what you've done broken my chiling.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He was playing with a piece of paper over there.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Oh yeah, here it is. It's a
- 8:54Speaker 2: rent receipt may out of somebody, somebody named Saunders.
- 8:58Speaker 9: Let me see it.
- 8:59Speaker 8: Sure received forty dollars rent one month in advance for
- 9:04Speaker 8: eight twelve Front Street, Venice. It's dated yesterday, Modal. I've
- 9:09Speaker 8: never heard of dishonors person, yet this thing was dropped
- 9:11Speaker 8: here in my house, perhaps by our thief model.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Do you realize what a break this ease dropped? Isn't
- 9:16Speaker 2: the word this was deposited? Oh you mean the planet.
- 9:18Speaker 2: It's a planet, complete with name, address and date. I
- 9:21Speaker 2: was left here by someone who wanted it to be found.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Because whoever has the sort of say boo right now,
- 9:25Speaker 2: I might also have it up for sale.
- 9:26Speaker 6: I think you're right, my boy.
- 9:28Speaker 2: What do you plan to do? The only thing I
- 9:29Speaker 2: can do? Go to Venice and strike a bargain in
- 9:31Speaker 2: our favor. I hope, I'll call you mister Palm. I
- 9:38Speaker 2: pushed my way out through the jungle of my car,
- 9:40Speaker 2: turned around at the dead end of the street, and
- 9:41Speaker 2: went down the way I'd come. At the first intersection,
- 9:44Speaker 2: leaning against the lamp post was six feet of lantern
- 9:47Speaker 2: jawed redhead and a turtleneck sweater and seamen's jacket. Gave
- 9:50Speaker 2: me a hard steady once silver until I was out
- 9:52Speaker 2: of sight. Later, halfway to Venice, I picked up a
- 9:55Speaker 2: pair of very sticky headlights in my rear view mirror,
- 9:57Speaker 2: but lost them again. I turned out a front street
- 10:00Speaker 2: and finally found number eight twelve, all by itself, out
- 10:02Speaker 2: of the far end. I parked the block away and
- 10:05Speaker 2: walked back. It was a battered rickety beat check. I
- 10:09Speaker 2: moved in gently and found a crack wide enough to
- 10:11Speaker 2: look through. There was no furniture, just one big packing crater,
- 10:14Speaker 2: kerosene lamp, and a blonde. Oh what a blonde. She
- 10:20Speaker 2: belonged in that joint like an orchid and a blacksmith.
- 10:23Speaker 2: In one hand she held a cigarette and the other
- 10:25Speaker 2: a small automatic. I went quietly at the back of
- 10:27Speaker 2: the house found a tin cannon through it, and I
- 10:30Speaker 2: plastered my back up beside the door and waited. She
- 10:33Speaker 2: came out slowly, gunn first, and when there was enough
- 10:35Speaker 2: showing to get a hold of, I grabbed my sister.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Come on, KIV, that's better. Now we can go in
- 10:43Speaker 2: and talk.
- 10:44Speaker 10: Huh you think you're so clever?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Goodbye, hey, cozy little spots you.
- 10:51Speaker 10: Picked you got here so it serves its purpose?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Awhile Philip Marlow, Henry Pond's private detective words. A sword
- 10:58Speaker 2: we thing to talk overting position as lousy miss Saunders?
- 11:01Speaker 10: What's the author?
- 11:03Speaker 2: Zero? Baby? I'm getting it back for free. Nowhere is it?
- 11:05Speaker 6: Take your hands off me.
- 11:09Speaker 10: The sword is here in the house, but this cab
- 11:12Speaker 10: it isn't. And one's quite worthless without the other.
- 11:14Speaker 2: You know, I'm not taking a lot of chances, are
- 11:16Speaker 2: you kidding?
- 11:16Speaker 10: So it has already brought me five thousand dollars mil
- 11:19Speaker 10: and I've only just begun, So make an offer and.
- 11:22Speaker 6: Make it good.
- 11:22Speaker 2: You're a liar, so it's not worth one tenth that,
- 11:25Speaker 2: not of itself.
- 11:26Speaker 10: No, but this one's special and I know why. And
- 11:29Speaker 10: I'll tell you something else.
- 11:30Speaker 2: You bet you will. You'll tell me where it isn't
- 11:31Speaker 2: fast drop the gun.
- 11:36Speaker 11: I even turn around.
- 11:39Speaker 2: A lantern joe with red hair. You were telling me,
- 11:43Speaker 2: after all, you said it.
- 11:45Speaker 10: Now wait a minute, shut up, but I get.
- 11:47Speaker 11: Up the front door.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Go on, go on, beat it.
- 11:50Speaker 12: I'll see you later, now, you mister, now what Now
- 11:54Speaker 12: we sit down a couple of smart guys and find
- 11:57Speaker 12: a good sensible way to work this out.
- 12:00Speaker 11: Only I'm just a little smarter because I got the
- 12:02Speaker 11: only gun.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Keep talking.
- 12:04Speaker 11: What you say the sword was Speak up, fellow, times running.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Out sounds like time's not the only thing that's running
- 12:10Speaker 2: out red. Somebody's in my back room. Sorry, tootsy, but
- 12:14Speaker 2: now this only works one wait. Oh oh, I couldn't
- 12:26Speaker 2: tell how long I've been out. I felt like I'd
- 12:29Speaker 2: lost at least a weekend and somebody's boiler factory. I
- 12:32Speaker 2: got back far enough to realize that something was going
- 12:35Speaker 2: through my pockets. It was snaggled too for the week's
- 12:39Speaker 2: growth of beard and put the room in need of
- 12:41Speaker 2: a healthy spring of sweet air.
- 12:44Speaker 6: Yeah that's that's a little better. I thought you was
- 12:48Speaker 6: done in there for a minute.
- 12:50Speaker 2: E who I Oh what happened anyway?
- 12:54Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what I'd like to know.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Call me.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Sid, okay, Sid, thank you.
- 13:01Speaker 6: I was walking along the beach out there, like I
- 13:03Speaker 6: always doing. All of a sudden I heard a swim,
- 13:06Speaker 6: you know, like I was a wounded cat came from
- 13:10Speaker 6: in here, and I know this house has been empty
- 13:13Speaker 6: for years?
- 13:14Speaker 2: Was it you?
- 13:14Speaker 6: Was screened?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Oh? No, I went out too fast.
- 13:17Speaker 6: Yeah. Well, I come a running, and just when I
- 13:20Speaker 6: stepped up in the porch and fell on the pea jacket,
- 13:22Speaker 6: come charging out and beat it down the street.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Reading the noise in the back. Have you been
- 13:31Speaker 2: in there that back room? Me?
- 13:33Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I just looked this far and then I
- 13:37Speaker 6: found you. What what's it all about, mister? What's back
- 13:42Speaker 6: in there?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Hey? Bring that kerosene latin were.
- 13:46Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, sure, here I got it.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Look a guy, yeah, a wild head Roomenian named Bibesco
- 13:56Speaker 2: with a sort of save boost, taking clear through him
- 14:00Speaker 2: dead center.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Now with our star Gerald Moore, we continue with the
- 14:16Speaker 3: second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The Sword
- 14:19Speaker 3: of say Boo.
- 14:30Speaker 2: While the Beachcomba gaped like a marionette with broken jaw,
- 14:33Speaker 2: strings of the impaled body of Kurt Lebesco slump at
- 14:35Speaker 2: our feet, I quickly covered the room in the back porch,
- 14:38Speaker 2: which led to the beach outside, looking for the wooden
- 14:40Speaker 2: sheath that belonged to the sword of say Boo, just
- 14:42Speaker 2: in case Claire Saunders had been bluffing. But five minutes
- 14:47Speaker 2: of that got me nothing more than a little exercise
- 14:49Speaker 2: and a lot of salt hair. Well what choie ought
- 14:53Speaker 2: to do? Now? Mitt?
- 14:54Speaker 6: Did you call the cat?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah? I guess so.
- 14:57Speaker 6: Sure would like to take that sword?
- 15:00Speaker 2: What jor? But the homicide boys are kind of narrow minded,
- 15:02Speaker 2: you see. They like their corpses as is. Come on,
- 15:06Speaker 2: let's get to the phone.
- 15:07Speaker 6: Okay, there's one's a couple of blocks away.
- 15:09Speaker 2: You got a car, Yeah, it's upfront, got a light?
- 15:13Speaker 6: Yeah? He match?
- 15:16Speaker 2: Oh wait a minute. What do you do with the
- 15:19Speaker 2: conger clubs? Yeah?
- 15:21Speaker 6: Oh matches ain't mine? Just picked them up off in
- 15:25Speaker 6: that barrel.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Come on, good club man, you know where it is?
- 15:31Speaker 6: Sure it's right here in Venice ex Marine run in
- 15:35Speaker 6: a while, though cops rated at once they had some dancing.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Where is it? Where is it? Come on? It could
- 15:40Speaker 2: be important.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Straight down Front Street, Broadway, then left phone block and
- 15:43Speaker 6: you're there.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Now, look you call the cops and get back here.
- 15:46Speaker 2: And wait till I come. Tell them my name is
- 15:48Speaker 2: Philip Marlow. I'm a private detective.
- 15:50Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Oh no, no, sir, not me. I ain't waiting here alone.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Ten bucks? You heard me here? Tell he'll all get
- 15:59Speaker 2: in touches as I can. Also said I'll match that
- 16:02Speaker 2: ten the next time we meet. If you've kept your
- 16:03Speaker 2: mind on your work.
- 16:04Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, but well I telling me you
- 16:08Speaker 6: went to the conger.
- 16:09Speaker 2: You catch on fast the conga junr. Well it be
- 16:25Speaker 2: Max Scotch and a little information girl named Claire Saunders
- 16:30Speaker 2: dressed in a white linen. I never heard of him.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Mac Oh, I see so many people, you know? Yeah, sure,
- 16:35Speaker 2: now you get what I meant you may, of course,
- 16:39Speaker 2: Well you better make that a double Scotch on throw.
- 16:42Speaker 2: He should have known better, trusting a fast name with
- 16:45Speaker 2: every set of his war bonus war bonus. Yeah, who
- 16:50Speaker 2: should have known better? Well? I yeah, I've been waiting
- 16:55Speaker 2: in a minute. A look, who should have known? Betterness?
- 16:59Speaker 2: My kid brother back in New York. He's a vet marine.
- 17:04Speaker 2: He got his check in the state and he turned
- 17:05Speaker 2: it over to this Claire's sawas they were going to
- 17:07Speaker 2: get married. That's what she said, and that was the
- 17:10Speaker 2: last he saw her. Oh well, it happens every day.
- 17:14Speaker 2: He'll know better than us time.
- 17:17Speaker 5: I just happened to remember, you do. Yeah, but around
- 17:23Speaker 5: a couple of days. Now it's pretty flush all right.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Now where she's staying, Yeah, sure do.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Ritzie motel about four blocks from here, the pavilion pavilion.
- 17:31Speaker 5: H yeah, she got bungalow ten there, Mac, I know
- 17:33Speaker 5: because she was complaining about it being the end one
- 17:35Speaker 5: and too long a run for the bell hop and
- 17:37Speaker 5: a cracked ice to tell you go get him, Mac.
- 17:40Speaker 5: And when you do, tell a kid brother that another
- 17:43Speaker 5: ex marine tipped you off.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you bet I will, bell hop eyes. We're gonna
- 18:10Speaker 2: straighten it out right now, Quiet down now over there
- 18:16Speaker 2: as much as bat at full syelash, take inventory. Baby,
- 18:20Speaker 2: I know you're alone because I played Peeping Tom before
- 18:22Speaker 2: I played bell Hop. Sham of maid's doing much needed
- 18:25Speaker 2: job on bedspreads.
- 18:28Speaker 10: All right, So we're down to the pillow. So you've
- 18:31Speaker 10: got the sheet. Now what are you gonna do with it?
- 18:34Speaker 10: And without the sword?
- 18:35Speaker 2: You kidding, duchess. You don't think I missed that back
- 18:37Speaker 2: room at the cottage?
- 18:38Speaker 10: Do you you found the sword there?
- 18:40Speaker 2: And Kurt Babesco, who's wearing the sword the hard way
- 18:43Speaker 2: through his insides.
- 18:46Speaker 10: Somebody was killed with the sword.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Oh come on, come on, it's a little late for
- 18:50Speaker 2: that wide eyed pitch baby. It doesn't shut carrot top part.
- 18:52Speaker 2: And I tell you every time he kills anything wrong.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Oh sure, sure, yeah, sure, but just for laughs, let's
- 18:59Speaker 2: pass it. I knew a lot of the cops.
- 19:01Speaker 10: Huh no, please don't please, I'll tell you everything.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Marrow.
- 19:04Speaker 10: Turner isn't my partner. He hardly knows me.
- 19:06Speaker 2: That's better just to Turner, the man with the red hair.
- 19:10Speaker 10: Malla, believe me. I can explain everything.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Okay, let's try it did just Tables saw it for
- 19:15Speaker 2: my client, Henry Pound. Yes or no? Yes?
- 19:16Speaker 10: Why let me start at the beginning a week ago,
- 19:20Speaker 10: and Manila.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Please, all right, let's have it.
- 19:22Speaker 10: It was late in the afternoon and I was shopping
- 19:24Speaker 10: for a handbag, just looking in store windows. Suddenly I
- 19:28Speaker 10: noticed a man hurrying down the opposite side of the street.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Man who turned out to the Eugene Voss, Henry Pound's partner.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Maybe that's right.
- 19:34Speaker 10: I could tell he was afraid of something, Marllowing. He
- 19:36Speaker 10: darted into a curio shop nearby. A minute later I
- 19:39Speaker 10: saw Turner, you know him, just slightly. We met once.
- 19:44Speaker 10: Obviously he was following Boss, but he didn't go into
- 19:47Speaker 10: the curio shop, and Steady he hid close by. And
- 19:51Speaker 10: then when Boss came out, he shot him marllow.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Just like that.
- 19:55Speaker 10: It was gone before anyone knew what had happened. I
- 19:58Speaker 10: ran over the Boss to see if there was anything
- 19:59Speaker 10: I could do to help, but there wasn't.
- 20:02Speaker 2: He was dying.
- 20:03Speaker 10: Oh, it's rightful. Please, I'd like a drink there on
- 20:09Speaker 10: the desk when you're through, go on, go on.
- 20:10Speaker 2: What happened makes Oh?
- 20:11Speaker 10: He told me to take the money in his billfold,
- 20:14Speaker 10: five thousand dollars, to take it all for delivering a
- 20:17Speaker 10: message brought the sword. Yes, I was to get in
- 20:19Speaker 10: touch with Henry Pond here in Los Angeles and tell
- 20:23Speaker 10: him that the sword, which Voss had just purchased in
- 20:25Speaker 10: the curio shop was on its way. He should pay
- 20:28Speaker 10: special attention to it. And then he died.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Well, you decided that five thousand bucks was an awful
- 20:36Speaker 2: lot for playing messager boy, eh? So you said nothing
- 20:39Speaker 2: that the police grabbed the first plane for LA got
- 20:42Speaker 2: the pounds place here and swiped the sword right.
- 20:45Speaker 10: A delivering message was worth five thousand dollars. The sword
- 20:49Speaker 10: itself would be worth.
- 20:50Speaker 2: A lot more, but you had no idea why.
- 20:52Speaker 10: Maybe a cold in the pattern of the design and
- 20:54Speaker 10: the jewels in the handle. Probably not the sword itself.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you figured right, little schema. Yeah, here's your drink.
- 21:01Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Hu. The rest of the story I can fit together myself.
- 21:10Speaker 2: You know you had something, but you didn't know what,
- 21:11Speaker 2: so you swiped the sword. You left an obvious clue
- 21:13Speaker 2: to an empty cottage, that rent receipt. You counted on
- 21:16Speaker 2: it to start the ball rolling, and it certainly did.
- 21:19Speaker 2: What would that be? I don't know find out.
- 21:24Speaker 9: Who is it?
- 21:25Speaker 10: I want to talk to you just a minute.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You still sure you're not partnership?
- 21:30Speaker 6: Yes?
- 21:31Speaker 2: I told you the truth, All right, answer. I'll wait
- 21:34Speaker 2: here in the closet with the door open wide enough
- 21:36Speaker 2: for the barrel of at thirty eight. Just in case
- 21:38Speaker 2: you've never been a miniela. Go on, hurry, Maybe you're not.
- 21:47Speaker 12: When I slugged over the cottage, wasn't then when I
- 21:50Speaker 12: went back, just some bomb I skared away, went back.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I went.
- 21:53Speaker 11: Back after you ran.
- 21:55Speaker 12: There was some excitement Sweet. First I slugged the people
- 21:58Speaker 12: because I heard some noise in the back.
- 21:59Speaker 11: I thought, we you me.
- 22:00Speaker 10: I never returned to the cottage.
- 22:02Speaker 12: I know it was the loudst name, but Besco I
- 22:04Speaker 12: got him, all right, but the very sort he was
- 22:08Speaker 12: at the little number right here in my hands.
- 22:11Speaker 11: He was competition.
- 22:13Speaker 12: So we you, sweet, except that I doped your angle
- 22:16Speaker 12: a long time ago. What do you mean I told
- 22:18Speaker 12: you something before he died in another I stopped after
- 22:21Speaker 12: I ran doll.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I even came back.
- 22:24Speaker 12: I saw you go for his bill cold some mumble something.
- 22:28Speaker 12: When I ran into you again here in la I
- 22:30Speaker 12: knew you were swinging in the dog. It was a
- 22:32Speaker 12: nice try, Sweets, but you missed. Now give me the sheet.
- 22:40Speaker 12: He's too belonged to get it.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Come on, hand it over.
- 22:43Speaker 11: You don't want me to be rough to your dog. Yeah,
- 22:49Speaker 11: Like I said, they belonged to together.
- 22:55Speaker 2: That's funny. They should fit it.
- 23:00Speaker 12: What are you laughing at the Yes, Sweet's a slip
- 23:03Speaker 12: of paper with a list of people on it.
- 23:05Speaker 11: I think it's crumpled in the bottom of the sheet here, and.
- 23:08Speaker 2: That's why the sword all the way.
- 23:14Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 10: A piece of paper, A.
- 23:17Speaker 11: Valuable piece of paper.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Sure names the numbers of all the players. Oh he's dead,
- 23:31Speaker 2: isn't It's about his dad, as a guy named Eugene
- 23:34Speaker 2: Voss was last week on a sidewalk in Manila or
- 23:38Speaker 2: the party called the best Go.
- 23:42Speaker 10: What is it?
- 23:44Speaker 2: China is dead? But I don't think his partner is No.
- 23:47Speaker 10: You thought I was his partner?
- 23:49Speaker 2: Oh? Yes, yes, and I thought wrong, Claire. And now
- 23:52Speaker 2: I'll get a little more to go on. I'll see
- 23:54Speaker 2: your honey.
- 23:54Speaker 11: No way, what am I supposed to do?
- 23:57Speaker 10: Call the police and explain it all away As a practical.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Joke, O have a hard Where are you going?
- 24:03Speaker 2: Back to my client, little dreamer? I think it? Give
- 24:05Speaker 2: me a line on that part, ander'd be good. I
- 24:17Speaker 2: was an hour plus driving slowly back to the transplanted
- 24:19Speaker 2: world on Crestline Drive, and all the way I kept
- 24:22Speaker 2: adding and subtracting all the screwball figures i'd run into,
- 24:25Speaker 2: hoping that someplace i'd find a mistake. But when I
- 24:28Speaker 2: was there, through the junior jungle and standing at the
- 24:30Speaker 2: front door, I knew that my hunch was right. You've
- 24:34Speaker 2: got the sword sheath like mister Palmerer in my car. Also,
- 24:37Speaker 2: I got news the best goes dead. So I don't know.
- 24:43Speaker 6: But why haven't you brought this Ordan sheath in with you?
- 24:46Speaker 2: Because they don't count, mister Palm, there wasn't any code
- 24:49Speaker 2: in the pattern on either one. The answer was a
- 24:51Speaker 2: slip of paper jam down in the sheath. Here is
- 24:54Speaker 2: that what we're after? Me?
- 24:56Speaker 6: Yes, yes, Marto, this is it.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Oh.
- 24:58Speaker 6: I knew he wouldn't fail me.
- 25:00Speaker 8: I knew voss was loyal. I knew it.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Oh, better than that, mister Pound. You counted on it.
- 25:04Speaker 2: And don't move a finger. Happy. It's a great night
- 25:05Speaker 2: for killing. Now go on into the study. We're going
- 25:07Speaker 2: to use the phone. Marnal, you're sure sure? I am,
- 25:11Speaker 2: so much so that I let the hairs from an
- 25:13Speaker 2: affectionate Siamese cat changed my mind about everything. Keep moving
- 25:17Speaker 2: the cat.
- 25:18Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 25:19Speaker 2: I mean? The turner who shot Eugene Vossum and the
- 25:21Speaker 2: low murdered Butbesco out of the beach, who I just
- 25:23Speaker 2: killed before he could kill me, had white hairs molting
- 25:26Speaker 2: white Siamese cat all over his suit, the same kind
- 25:29Speaker 2: of white hairs I got on mine when shoes shoe
- 25:30Speaker 2: rubbed against me. I go on open that door. In
- 25:34Speaker 2: other words, Pound Turner was a friend here, not full
- 25:36Speaker 2: and from there on in it all figures. But do
- 25:38Speaker 2: you still think I'm insane?
- 25:40Speaker 6: Yes?
- 25:40Speaker 2: I oh, Marle, You're right, you bet, I'm right.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Turner was in this with me, a partner.
- 25:49Speaker 8: You might see, you see. I knew that Eugene Voss
- 25:53Speaker 8: was worried about competitors.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Like Vibesco go on.
- 25:57Speaker 8: I knew that Voss would see I got his clients list,
- 26:00Speaker 8: the Pearl dealers if his life was really.
- 26:02Speaker 2: In danger, and gave you a brilliant idea put his
- 26:05Speaker 2: life in danger, So you sent Turner to Manila to
- 26:07Speaker 2: kill Voss once the list was on its way. Oh,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I'm neat, tell me clean cut. Why didn't you let
- 26:13Speaker 2: Turner know about the sword at once?
- 26:14Speaker 6: Because he was strict?
- 26:16Speaker 8: Bost planted a faint listed his hotel, hoping the Turner
- 26:19Speaker 8: would find it and go his merry way, which Turner did.
- 26:22Speaker 8: He didn't know it was fake until he arrived here
- 26:24Speaker 8: this morning, which of.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Course didn't affect the scheduled murder. Nice and thorough, aren't you?
- 26:29Speaker 2: Or if you left have some little detail I should know,
- 26:31Speaker 2: like why you bothered having Turner get mixed up in
- 26:33Speaker 2: this at all tonight. I would have brought the sword
- 26:35Speaker 2: and sheet back for you without him.
- 26:37Speaker 6: I know you would, Marlow.
- 26:38Speaker 2: That's why I heard.
- 26:39Speaker 8: But I also knew that there was a good chance
- 26:41Speaker 8: that in finding the sword you would also find that
- 26:43Speaker 8: ideal in opium, not.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Per you know. Oh fine, And Turner was right behind
- 26:49Speaker 2: me all the way, ready to kill me if I
- 26:51Speaker 2: found that out from say Berbesco.
- 26:53Speaker 6: Huhice, Turner was right behind you, Marlow. Even if high
- 26:57Speaker 6: DECKI is right behind you, You're fool.
- 27:01Speaker 8: Why do you think I kept talking here, kept confessing,
- 27:03Speaker 8: Speak up my decade.
- 27:06Speaker 2: He can't.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Hi, Debby is very unconscious. Hire him with a place
- 27:11Speaker 6: a Philippine.
- 27:13Speaker 2: You're lying.
- 27:24Speaker 10: All You've got him behind the curtain.
- 27:30Speaker 2: There's nothing there, honey, I think more than a friendly
- 27:32Speaker 2: cat named Shoeshoe. It took a long time, it always does,
- 27:50Speaker 2: but finally the police in Los Angeles and the police
- 27:53Speaker 2: of Manila knew exactly who had done, what's a whom
- 27:55Speaker 2: and why, all of which left Henry Pound, the vicious
- 27:58Speaker 2: little character. Wouldn't eve recognize honor among thieves with a short,
- 28:03Speaker 2: unpleasant future. And I thought about him and every rotten
- 28:08Speaker 2: thing he'd done as I walked through his imported island
- 28:10Speaker 2: jungle to my car. I thought about him, and Butbesco
- 28:13Speaker 2: about Turner the houseboy, about Eugene Vasen. I didn't think
- 28:18Speaker 2: about Claire Saunders until I got to my car. Was
- 28:21Speaker 2: in behind the wheel, headlights on. The words were written
- 28:26Speaker 2: in lipstick, the linked and breadth of my windshield Still dear.
- 28:30Speaker 10: I stepped out when nobody was looking. But don't friend,
- 28:34Speaker 10: because from here on out I'm going to be very good.
- 28:38Speaker 10: I've learned my lessons.
- 28:40Speaker 1: PS.
- 28:42Speaker 10: My plane doesn't leave until morning. Would you like to
- 28:46Speaker 10: help me?
- 28:47Speaker 6: Wait?

- 28:50Speaker 2: and they're open all night. Claire Airport Cafe, and he's
