- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Welcome to everyone to critics.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: The movie rated below 40% on rotten tomatoes.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: It tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Yanit Co.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Ten years later, it's the error of its way.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: My guest today is Dennis, comedian, writer, podcaster, Dina Cavunio.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Hello, thank you.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Very excited to talk about this masterpiece.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Right, that's the end of the podcast, right?
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: There's nothing more than Street Fighters.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: That's all you need to know.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: It's Street Fighter.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: It's the original Street Fighters.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I I didn't realise there were so many of them.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I didn't know, I genuinely didn't know either.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: I'm glad you found that out.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: I genuinely thought they just did one.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Because I know the first one ends in like the way Marvel movie ends with a little bit, oh, he's not dead or whatever.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but I thought that they I thought they nipped it in the bud.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: But obviously, this is back in the for people of my age, we are of the straight to video generation.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Do you know what straight to video?
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: So lot kids don't know about straight to video, but um we do.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: So I think what they must have done was they must have made all these straight to video Street Fighter movies that I never knew about, and now I've got to catch up.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: I've got to find a video player.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I've I've never seen I didn't even seen this one to be honest, until yeah, today.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, well I'm glad actually, I'm glad that I brought you to this film because you know I can't really I probably haven't seen it.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: But somebody who likes bad films that's remarkable.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean there's like I think it came out, didn't it come out like the same year as c as Mortal Kombat?
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, you're tested me there.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but we're talking like '93, '94.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: So we're talking about like Teenage Munic Ninja Turtles, we're talking like Super Mario Brothers, like all those early 90s video games things, uh, or cartoons being made.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that wouldn't surprise me if Mortal Kombat.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen Mortal Kombat now.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: I think, oh no, I have seen Mortal Kombat.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Of course I have.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in fact, that's a better that film was too good for this podcast.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Mortal Kombat is uh isn't bad actually.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: That's one I remember, and I remember really enjoying that at the time.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: That was but like I never got round to seeing this because I I always kind of like thought of them as similar things, like as like clashing uh with each other, and like they were like they were kind of similar, but I don't know.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I was in I was more into the Street Fighter game, but I was more I was more into the Mortal Kombat movie just because I I guess I saw it at first and then Well in when I was a kid you were either Nintendo or Mega Drive, and that would have dictated your loyalty.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: So if you was Mega Drive, you you you was into Mortal Kombat and that was your loyalty, and if you were Nintendo, you were Street Fighter, I hadn't either, so I had no so that's why I've seen I've seen them both.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: I got my Mega Drive a little later.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Um so um by that point I'd I'd already seen them and I hadn't I hadn't pledged um allegiance to either.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: No, I had a I had a Super Nintendo and I had Street Fighter, but like later on, not when it came out.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, right, yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Because I was like five when it came out, I was way too young.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Oh okay, yeah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: I was I was yeah, that's that's too young.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: That would you'd have been become a very different person had you been like when you were five, you'd be in a cage right now, cage fighting for a living.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Not necessarily the worst thing right now.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: No, actually, well, with social distancing, I don't know what I would do with cage fighting, you have to just sticks.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: So what what is your actual history with this movie?
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Well, it's kind of basic, so it came out and um I thought it was great, and that's kind of it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: But you have to you have to remember that when it came out, like it's it's it had the people the people in it were the biggest stars you could get at the time, and they're people who people now don't really care about, but like that I don't think I can really possibly properly convey how famous John Claude Van Damme was in the 90s.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: He was bigger than Brad Pitt, he was bigger than I don't know, um Ed Sheeran.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: He was just he was just in everything.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: He was in uh Universal Soldier, he did Time Cop, um he just and he was like really like he was he was like Arnold Schwarzenegger, but you was allowed to fancy him.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: You can't fancy Arnold Schwarzenegger, you know what I mean?
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Like it's just that's that's a hot that's almost his own that's almost his own sexuality, you know.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Like I I identify as somebody who fancies Arnold Schwarzenegger, that's weird.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: But John Claude Van Damme, yeah, like he was, and I was still little at the time, I wasn't like so.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: I I hadn't, you know, these feelings were just odd to me.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: I was like 11 or 10 or something.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Um, but the there was that had Kylie, who again people have to understand how famous Kylie's famous now, okay.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: But to people of my generation or my age, I should say, in the 90s, Kylie had just come off of neighbours, which was like in the UK the biggest show ever for kids.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Um so for us, this is like um this is like a James Bond movie, or you know, any I don't I'm trying to think of famous actors, and I can't.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: This is just like the A-list, a double A-list, double A star list.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Um but that's the thing, they don't that doesn't really like necessarily exist anymore.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: That kind of like real A-list movie action star necessarily.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think they call them vehicles back in, you know, that whole thing was like you put Keanu Reed on a bus, we'll just go and watch the movie because it's Keanu Reed.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, the whole all that, all that, all that all diehard and all that stuff.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Which incidentally, I've just I haven't who was this before?
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: The writer of Street Fighter.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: I know right, Commando, greatest 80s movie, but not the second greatest movie of all time, second only to this.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, he wrote uh oh you wrote all it he wrote for Night Rider, the TV show, right?
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, I didn't see that.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I I missed that on this, I missed that on his list.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: He wrote so he but these vehicles were just like get a famous person, have them kill a lot of people, have things blow up, um, and um have them you know kill vaguely foreign or clearly foreign foreign non-European American um people, and that's what we that's what we lived on, and we wonder why we voted Brexit when we were brought up on this shit.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: But uh Street Fighter now, come on now.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Everything is all like ethnically a little bit ambiguous, even though John Codback and Alan Kylie are still you know white saviors and all this shit.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: But there's still he also has like an American flag on him as well, like tattooed on him, which is weird.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I thought I I hadn't I did I thought Guy was in the game, they do they do change the ethnicity of a few people.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they definitely do.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Like Kyle, like Ken was ja is Japanese, like I don't know why they made him American.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Um and Ryu, like, is Japanese, so I don't know why they made him American.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Like so that was a wait, is Ken's not Japanese?
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, is he not?
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: No, no, he's American in the game.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Oh is he in the game?
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Oh I can't I've forgotten that.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, fair enough.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, he is American, but he's I think he's the only American in the game, which is why I don't know.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Like I haven't played it in a long, long time, but he's definitely like he's definitely white white with blonde hair and okay, yeah, that that's fair enough then.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So they got they got one right.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Um but they change a few of them around, and yeah.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I don't think I don't think Kylie's character's in the game.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: No, I I just I I couldn't place who she was.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: I think they must have invented a character for her because she's not in the game.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: I have no memory of I don't recall her being in the game, but that's fine because they that's how they had to they couldn't have a you know they could have done what they would do now and get her to play Chun Li, you know, like they'd get Scarlet they'd get Scarlett Johansson to do it, right?
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: But I didn't see that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: So I I respect how forward thinking Street Fighter was and cast in an um East Asian actress to play an East Asian person, um which is you know rare in this this day.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And she's probably the best thing in it as well, like except for maybe Rao Julia, like those two are like the best characters in it.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: I would say that that is the case.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: He's Raoul is um is it Julia Julia?
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know, but he's um yeah, I'm not sure.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Um but he's really evil, which is good, and and Chan Lee just like he is the strong female lead before that that was even in invented.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it always bothers me this whole narrative about oh yeah, yeah, yeah, women in movies, like you know, like those how violent women in in have been has been have been in movies since forever.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Like it really isn't that big a deal if you're a woman in a movie and you have to learn some martial arts, or if you're like Chinese cinema, do you know what I mean?
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Women just oh my god, it's just like they're always stabbing someone or in like so it's that that that's kind of mythology.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, don't get me wrong, like women are portrayed in a certain way in movies, but the idea that it's revolutionary to have a violent woman in a movie is just like no, please.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: It's been violent since forever.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: They were violent in Street Fighter, trust me, they have nothing to worry about in terms of that part of the culture.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: It's pretty like tame in Street Fighter though.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Well, I was reading about um it just uh just for this podcast.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: Apparently, they had to edit out all the fight scenes, um, which is why they're so shit.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Um which is why the fight scenes are so bad.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Um apparently they had to be chopped up so they could get the rating so the teenage the kitties could watch it.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Um which I hadn't um appreciated.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Um but um but apparently just before it got released, there was a school shooting.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Now I would suggest oh I would suggest before most movies are released, there's a school shooting in America.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: That's just kind of that's kind of what happened.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: But because of that, they were they got quite strict with with the um with what you could depict and what you couldn't depict.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: That's that's interesting you say that then, because they cut the fight scenes, but they left in a lot of the shooting in the movie.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Welcome to America.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: What can you say?
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, you can you can literally blow up a whole uh but get who gets shot?
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: It's all of those, um it's all of the kind of the type uh the uh it was one of the oh it's a made-up country, right?
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: It's a made-up country.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's um it's all these very clearly sat East Asian people in the made-up country that's shot basically.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Shadow, they just call it right, yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I mean god it's almost like they made it.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: You know how sometimes you get things on the internet where it's like pick your fake country and it's like your name begins with A, start with this syllable, it begins with this, start with this syllable, they just made it up like that.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: That's interesting, I believe.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, that's right.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Of course, you're allowed to, you know, it's you're allowed to shoot lots of people as long as you're not shooting lots of white people.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: Then you get an A, then you get like an AT.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: But um yeah, it was Jean-Claude Van Damme's army um came in the people, so it was fine.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so like this this movie itself, it's just like it's a very I don't know, it's a very typical action movie in the sense of like it's uh you've got the bad guy, you've got the good like action star who's trying to slave everyone, and then you've got like uh all of his like basically his almost they're almost his assistants, pretty much, because they cut that he brings them in to help fight everyone, and it's just uh and help bring down uh M Bison, which is the the villain.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um and he's just like he's he's very he's really hamming it up in this M Bison uh uh Rao Julio.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because the dude has to.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: What else are you gonna do?
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you you know, but I like it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: And I think that's I think that's the beauty of this film, and that's why I don't understand why people don't like it.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Like, it's meant to be hammy.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Like it's meant it's meant to be corny.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Um it's like it's a Bond movie, it's like I said before.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Like, if you Oh it you wouldn't watch a Bond movie and be like, oh, the brilliant was a bit too camp.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Like if you'd say the brilliant wasn't camp enough.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Um so it it's it's meant to be like um ostentatious and audacious and ludicrous.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Um and they're meant to have a lair.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: The minute you see the guy's got a lair, like of course he's gonna hammer up.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: He's not gonna be discreet, he's not gonna have to have like he's not gonna have daddy issues that we're gonna see behind the movements of his eyes.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: No, he's just gonna be he's just gonna be straight up mad, um, which is I like, so I don't understand why people don't like that because that's necessary.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Um he he's like uh so he I think he's really good in it.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: I know you say Jean-Claude Van Damme was like the at the peak of his career and the every other hype.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: I think he's really, really bad in this.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: So again, did a bit of reading on this um before I know what you're gonna say.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, coked out of his mind, um, which is um I don't know because he looks really good, so it's not like a bad advert, like it's not like a same to drugs kind of performance.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: It's kind of a oh 10 grand of 10 grand's worth of coke a week he was doing during the filming of this.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: I don't know how much coke costs, but I know that you I have no idea, but that sounds like a lot to spend 10 grand and as expensive as it is, I think that that's in the early 90s.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: Well, listen, this is how far ahead of its time it was.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: You know, like in um do you remember in Austin Powers where like the evil guys holds up someone for ransom and he asks for$10 million and they all kissed?
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Yes, okay.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: The ransom in 1993,$20 billion for Guile to release the green guy, whatever his name is.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Um now come on, like that's good, you know.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: They didn't want to date this movie, they could have dated this movie by saying, Oh, give us half a million.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: They were like, this movie is so good, we've got the confidence that it will stand the test of time that we're gonna rate in inflation, you know.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: 20 billion dollars, come on, that's like um that yeah.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm very impressed with with how that's that's withheld, or that's held up over the over the decades, three decades almost.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: That would be huge now to even say that.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's um it's it's it's it's what it costs to to furlough everyone or whatever.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's phenomenal.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: Um, and I'm pleased.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: I've actually that shows foresight and intelligence.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: But they pay it as well.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: They well they're willing to pay it at least.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Oh they say they're willing to pay it, and then no, and then Jean Corb had angry, he's like, Oh, what is it gonna be next?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: He will come back to us next time and say 50 billion, a hundred billion.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: He's got again this is good diplomacy, it's a good point.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: I think um, I don't know, maybe because it was aimed at kids, but kids have no real understanding of money.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so maybe they were like just make it 20 billion or 30 billion, whatever.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Um but um I'd I I I rate that highly.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: I think that's a I think that's that deserves another 10% on rotten tomatoes alone.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, so I I should say this is at 10%.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Is that 10%?
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: It's only at 10%.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: It's at 10%.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: No, I'm gonna vote now.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: How do you vote?
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Just remember.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: No, no, you can't vote.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: It's uh well you can do an audit, you can uh vote on the audience score, but you can't vote on the critic score.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: The critic score is 10%, the audience is 20%.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: 20?
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: That's it, yeah.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: The audience is 20, which was a surprise but the critics though that we're talking about, man.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: These same critics, man, will tell you that will tell you that um oh, I don't know, Django Unchained is a good film.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: It's a terrible film.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: So what do you crit what do critics know?
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: I just it's 10% is really low.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I I didn't like the movie, but I like moments of it.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Why didn't you like okay?
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Let's just no, let's discuss this.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Let's yeah, we can discuss this.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Why did you not like the movie?
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: What didn't you like about it?
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Um I didn't like Jean-Claude Van Damme.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I thought he was he was really bad in it.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: I thought his dialogue was I think the dialogue, all other dialogue, but yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: I'm okay.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: I can live with I can live with bad dialogue, but he's the leader of the movie, and he's like every time he's on screen, I want him to be off and I want to see I want to see the other characters.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: I don't care about him being on the screen.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Um that's because you don't handle him.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: That's fair enough.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: If he did, he'd have a different he'd have a different perspective.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Um I think a lot of the characters from the game are wasted in this as well.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: I think they do nothing with uh Dal Sim.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: He's like isn't he easy?
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: No, isn't he evil?
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: No, he's like being forced to work on uh on uh what's his name?
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Um Green Guy.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: The Green Guy Green Blanker, yeah, yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: He's being forced to work on him and like perform everything.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: So I and then he like gets stuff spilt on him at one point, and you're like, oh, he's gonna turn into his character.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Nope, does nothing until the end of the movie, he shaves his head.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: You don't see him like do his stretching arm movements or his legs or anything.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: That was actually that's funny.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: I remember being disappointed by that specific thing.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Because that sounds very specific.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's not much hyper That's my favourite character in the game, and yeah, he does nothing.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: There's there's not much hyper hyper-realism um in it.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Um like, yeah.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Blanc Blanca feels like a fake Hulk that does nothing.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Blanca's been kidnapped though.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: Like, if I'm sure if we watch Street Fighter 2, 3, 4, 5, Blanca will because he's been released by the end of the movie, by them, and he needs vengeance because he's got some acid on his face or something.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: He um he could have easily risen up to be the lead of of the second one.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: We'll never know.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: You didn't give it a chance.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: You didn't give it a chance.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: The second one is called The Rise of Blanca.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Is it?
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: It's not no yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: The other thing is, okay, I actually enjoyed this about it.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: I'll say this.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: The sets are so cheap.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: The sets are really, really cheap, and they're like, there's a point where like uh someone gets knocked into one and the whole thing starts shaking.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Literally the whole set shakes, and but it's like, how much did they actually spend on this movie?
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: It like it doesn't seem like a cheap movie necessarily.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: It's not a cheap movie, it's incredibly cheap.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: I think you're absolutely well they I think they spent all the money on the costume because I think it looks good, and Van Damme's coke habit, yeah, and and possibly potentially him, because apparently he took most of the budget just in salary alone.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: I can believe that.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: I think what was like what was I reading?
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: I can't remember, but he took like I think the budget was like around 30 to 35 million dollars, and he and he got paid about eight uh which is really funny.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Um that makes a lot of sense.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so the budget is yeah, when but you have to understand when you when I was little, I didn't see any of that stuff.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Like when you're 11 or 12, you don't see like the sets the set swabbing, you just think there's an earthquake or something.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: So let me ask you this then.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: When when you were were you the target audience uh when it came out?
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: I would say yes, or probably but younger, but yeah, because they basically wanted people who played the video game to watch the movie, right?
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Like that's it, and everybody like everybody played it, whether we played it in an arcade, whether we played it at home, like on the Nintendo, other people's Nintendo's everybody played by so absolutely, but that doesn't that doesn't cloud my judgment.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: I see where you're going here.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Does not cloud my judgment, okay.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: I'm still I'm still taking an objective position when I say this film is highly underrated, highly.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: So uh let's see then.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: What what um let's let's talk through the movie.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Let's talk through it.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Uh let's see, but see, because you were saying you hadn't seen it in a while.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen it in a while, but um I do remember um I do remember bits of it.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Um I have very I do I remember the acid going on some guy's face very clearly.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Um it's on it's not on uh on um Blanca, it's on Dalsim.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, fine.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: I've got that I'm so I'm assuming that's why he loses his hair, because I I I remember like looking down to write something, looking up and his hair was gone at one point, and I was like, when did that happen?
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Well, because of the acids.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it wasn't it, but it was like later down the line.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: He was just like no hair suddenly.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: You think he just like had a haircut and they just had It looks like it.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: But he's also like got like his face paintings and everything, and you know, all the tattoos and all that suddenly, which he doesn't have originally.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, so the movie it starts it opens with like civil war in Shadaloo has uh that it's ending and the capital has fallen, and uh uh Chun Lee is like uh a news reporter.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the valerius thing that's a bit of a stereotype, isn't it?
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: Like the Asian American Asian news reporter.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: That's quite yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Well obviously, when you were kidding you don't see these things, it's only now I'm woke I can see that.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: What is she in the game?
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Can you remember?
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: She just like none of them have jobs.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: None of them have none of them have any.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: They have to give them something.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: They don't have armies in the game.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: There's no you know, Guile doesn't have an army, it's ridiculous.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: No, but he's very clearly like in some kind of army general, at least.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's true, but they're all they're all very much in solo artists in the in the game.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Oh no, no, actually, it's it's General M.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Bison, which is uh Jean-Claude Van Damme.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: He's like um oh no, no, sorry, no, he's M.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Bison's.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Bison's the evil guy, sorry, yeah, yeah.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's the evil guy, he's the general.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Uh he's asking for 20 billion in Ramson for 63 hostages.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: So that works out to a lot of money for each person.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: That's fair enough.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: And then it comes up with the title, it said based on Street Fighter 2, which surprised me because I thought I didn't realise it was based only on the second game, and I'm assuming that's because it's only because they wanted to get so many of the characters.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you why, because Street Fighter 1 wasn't the big game.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's a big difference between Street Fighter 1 the video and Street Fighter 2.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Street Fighter 2 was the one that made it onto the consoles.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: I don't remember Street Fighter 1 being on the consoles, so we only ever played Street Fighter 2.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Um on that makes sense why I've only played the second one.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, you won't have unless you went into an arcade to put you know that you put money into the machine, you play video.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: That was Street Fighter 1.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Street Fighter 2 consoles.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: Now, don't quote me on that, but I could swear that is the case.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: When Street Fighter 2 came out, that was weird, that was the first time it was on the Nintendo or whatever.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: So that's why it says it's based on it, because that's that's what it was based on.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: I thought it was just to get the characters in or something.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: Probably that as well, yeah.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: But that's yeah, I think just to be specific.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Um, then we see cur the Colonel, uh, Guile.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Is it Guy say his name Guile?
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Guile, isn't that that's his name, right?
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, is that how you say it I'm asking for that name?
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: I'm the wrong person to ask.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: I am not good with names, so I'm the wrong person to ask.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And that's like the premise of the movie, basically.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Like they're they um then it starts setting up all the other characters.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: There's uh there's uh Ryu and Vega uh no, Ryu and uh Ken.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And they're they're like two friends and they're having like uh they're doing like a weapons trade deal with with um one of the characters.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: And then it turns out that they they try to sell him like fake guns with like uh tennis balls inside them.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: And they have a fight and they get out of there and it's very stupid, and then like Ryu has to fight Vega, uh the guy with the like the Wolverine claws.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: Um in like a ri in like a ring.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and again, you know, this is before cage fighting, guys.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: This is like this is before, and like I said, ahead of ahead of its ahead of its time.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: But it This is pre-UFC.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it it's funny what you said earlier, how they just tried to shoe home all the characters in.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because they they're also at this point they're injecting Blanca with everything, and like that's when he starts fighting.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Like he he's literally his first his opening scene is him kidnapped, gonna get it getting injected by someone.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: And it's all sort of and it's really weird.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: I don't think we ever understand why they're torturing him.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't think that's ever really addressed.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: They so they've got him kidnapped and they address they kind of address it that he's a friend of Guile, and when uh Guiles on the TV saying, Oh, I'm gonna come save you, Blanca, uh that's when he's like, that's when uh M Bison's like, oh no, he's the one we're gonna attack.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: He's the one we're gonna like inject with all this stuff.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's fair enough then, but it just seems a bit they could have just slit his throat, but no.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: I think they want like yeah, to get revenge.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: He wants to get revenge on his on uh Guile.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: I don't really I'm not really clear why they hate each other, those two.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, they just do that because I one one of them because one of them is a is like a a kind of an overlord, and one of them is like um E runs the UN or whatever it's called.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: He runs the army.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: So it's a bit like um they're just that's why they hate each other.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: One person is is is the law and one person is a criminal for my that's what that's what I took away.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: It's such a base level of like of criminal and hero.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: But it's so funny because like um coming from like a diehard perspective where there's so much nuance to everything and there's so much to it, and then you come to this, and it's just like let's do this as broad and empty of any kind of play, it's based on a video game.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Come on, it's not.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: I know, but it's based on a video game, but there's nothing to it, they can add whatever they want to.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's they could put a backstory in.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: But I also think that's like why video games don't work as movies, as such.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't I can't think of a good uh a video game that has to me has worked as well.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Did you ever watch Max Payne?
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, that was a Telber film.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that doesn't work.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Oh god, that was a sh and that's that was weird because Max Payne would have actually probably done a good film.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: So I don't know why they made a it should have been.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know why they've made a teleb when we've got Max Payne, and also they put Mark Warburg in it, who is not good, you know.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Not suited for the role, yeah.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Him and Mina Codeerson, yeah.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um I'm sure they must have made one good video game.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Um what about um oh Resident Evil that's not bad, that's probably one of the better ones.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's all personal taste though, like at the end of the day, it's all yeah.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Um like, but yeah, this is definitely better than Super Mario though.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: Yes, um I I can't even I actually saw that in the cinema and I don't really all I remember with that just being really bored.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Because it's not the thing about Super Mario is that you you when you are a kid and you are going to what you think is Super Mario movie, you think you just expect to see the video game on screen, you know but but I just saw normal people that didn't make any sense.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Like, where are the mushrooms?
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: Where's you where's Yoshi?
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Yoshi Oh the Yoshi Yoshi in this that movie is so weird.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it it was all yeah, that that that wasn't good.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: And all the it was like Bob was Bob Hoskins, wasn't it?
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: They put in it.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: He's not even yeah, Bob Hoskins.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: It's just yeah, that was just a dumb movie.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Just a just an English man.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Did he put an accent?
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: I can't remember.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Uh he has an American accent.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, right, so he doesn't have a yeah, they don't have the Italian accent.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: They have like New York Italian, I think.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: New York Italian American.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: Hey, it's Mario! Like there was none of that in there.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: It was how could you not have someone go, hey, it's Mario?
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: I think what made that bad was they tried to make it too dark.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they tried to make it art house, it didn't work.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: They just yeah, they like that's a dark movie for for the the for like what it comes from, and then this is just like I don't think this is dark enough.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: This is too camp.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think that's like the two the two opposites there.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I think that yeah, if they'd gone really dark with this one, I think it would have been good.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I think how I mean it's pretty dark.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, they talk it's got torture, it's got um arms deals, um things blow up, like religious temples get blown up.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: That's quite you know, there's sacrilege there, that's quite yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Um and there is the case of like a dictator who wants to build bisop bisonopolis who wants to build, which is right, which is clearly, you know, if you're gonna if you're gonna name build something, you might as well name it after yourself.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Bisonopolis is just such a bad name.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Because Chun Lee, Chun Lee's avenging her father, don't forget.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: Like she they can write a backstory, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: So bison I missed that completely.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Bison killed her dad, that's why she gets the gang together.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yes, you're right.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: And she works for 20 years to avenge.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that's how she was working as a news reporter, so she was just like building up her country, isn't it?
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Just like maybe she's got kids and she's got to build up her um college fund money, and then once she'd done that, she was like, right, now I can get back to business.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and she's also played by uh she also played by the woman who plays Mulan, which is quite great.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Is she?
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: I know she's been in loads of things, but I didn't know that.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that makes me happy.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: She's in Mulan and she's in Agents of Shield as well.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: I just know that she was in um because I love ER.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: My other one of my other favourite all-time things ever is ER.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Um she's in ER, so like she's really um like she's like a really long-running uh character in yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: So oh really?
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: So she had a long career then.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Look, the c I'm telling you, the cast of this film is wicked.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's got it's a good cast.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: I've got nothing wrong with the cast except for Van Damme.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: He's the only and like I think he's just like too I don't know, he's not doing the same thing everyone else is doing.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, he's on a different planet, isn't he?
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: But if he's on 10,000 pounds worth of coke a week, I can't expect him to be good in it.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Absolutely not.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: The fact he showed up is um although he did show up late every day, apparently.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: They had to shoot around him.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: What if that look I'm telling you right now, any if you think about it like Tom Hardy probably works that way.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: I'm I wouldn't I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: When you're the biggest superstar in the world and and and you know the film pivots upon you, be like your name on the poster, you're gonna take the piss.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: I don't want to take the piss if that happens to me.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: You're on record now, so yeah, but I won't get I won't get a Coke habit, I'll get like No, I know that I'll just get like I like olives, I guess, so I just olives.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: It's so middle class.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Do you know what?
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: My my little one likes olives, and I'm just thinking, God, yeah, she like I don't want her to be middle class, but if she's got my olive problem, then you really are so North London.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, olive's got my olive problem, yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: It's that yeah, like I don't know, like in this movie itself, like I don't know.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: There's lots of just there's things that happen, there's a magic trick at one point where they they invade, like they they escape and they hide.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they escape prison, then they go do the magic trick.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: So they escape the prison, first of all, and they do it through like um still they Ryu and uh Ken have a fake fight, and to do that they get they grab the the guards' keys and then they escape uh in the truck and they like drive out it with all the prisoners in this like the truck.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: And that's when they think that's when he uh uh I keep forgetting uh Van Damme thinks he's uh on uh they're on the opposing team, basically they're on the rival, they're the rivals, uh, but they're actually like working with him.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Um and then Van Damme gets shot, but you later find out that he he he was faking it, it's fake blood.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: Um and they didn't actually shoot him.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: So it's like it's it's very complicated.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: I won't lie, there's there was a part with this movie where I was like, I don't know what's going on, and then it gets then it brings it back again, and you're pretty much describing that part.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: That's fine because that was an infantile mind watching a movie that was like I don't know what's going on, but you just you just watch it because it's bright lights.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know how a kid understands it.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: It's bright lights, um, fine, you know.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Um, but I do remember feeling that that um that sense of when Van Damme gets shot, and then that relief when he's yeah, as a kid you're like, oh no, he's dead, but then now you now you see it and you're like, oh because he's not dead.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that back then, back then it was deep, man.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: You're dumb when you're a kid, you think that they're dead in real life, you don't think that they're like I know it reminds me of like a scene in Keenan and Kel.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: Do you remember that show?
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: And there was like uh not to do with them dying, but like one of the there was a scene in like a mid-series episode where Keenan had to move away, and I was like, oh, it's really the end of the show.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: I think it's not the end of the show.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you said we take things to heart, and I think like I said, the movie um probably like if you just have adult eyes, it is gonna look shit, and you've got to watch it like you're five or seven years old, or maybe eight, yeah, or nine.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Nine, watch it like a nine-year-old, and it's all gonna look great.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: Um but there's there's a good bit in this part where Ken and Ryo get taken away and uh by Sagroof, and he gives them the outfits that they wear at their real costumes from the movie, uh from the game, I mean, and like once they all start getting the costumes, I'm like, okay, um, that's another thing, right?
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: X-Men, they don't wear the cost.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: I know, that's a real big thing about the costumes in X-Men.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: They wear the like um Wolverine wears bright yellow in his own.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: I really hope he does that for the for the reboots now.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: Because why would they not put him in bright yellow?
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: It's street.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I know, I know.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Um so but Street Fighter didn't take the fist like that.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: They knew they knew that we cared about these kind of Yeah.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: That's one thing that I will give them credit for.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: They give every everyone eventually gets their costumes in it, and it it makes it more exciting because you're like, oh now we can finally get to the fighting with all these people and we're gonna get to it.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: The combat trousers are really like shitty.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: They're like they got them from Top Shop or Primark or something.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Chan Lee's isn't quite right because I don't think Chun Li in the video game wore were purple, but in the movie she wears red, red.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: There's little Yeah, it's red in the in the movie, yeah.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: And it's because he like he it's because uh uh bison gives it to her to like dress up as, and he wants to like watch her and flirt with her.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: It's still that it was telling the Jedi shit.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Um that that yeah, but it it's that's not quite right, and it's it's revealing.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: But Kylie, do you know something?
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: Kylie's outfit, who I mean, she wasn't in the game, so I couldn't tell you what she's supposed to wear.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: That she wants it's like she's got her breasts out, like they would do, you know, in in a movie that you make now with like a woman superhero.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Like Wonder Woman.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: I just sort of think you know, cones for bra and a really short skirt.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: There's nothing wonderful about that.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: It's not even like convenient to wear that to fight or anything.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: I thought Wonder Woman was a tellman.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't know.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: I should have checked what Wonder Woman got on Rotten Tomat, so I hated that film as well.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: That's pretty high, I think.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Oh god, that film was so bad.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: Do you know why that film was bad?
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Because she lost her virginity to the first man she met.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: Like, do you know what I mean?
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Like, okay, she parked him and meet some other guys.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Imagine that, you've got an island full of women and you've had like this really woman-led life, it's all been great, and you meet a guy and he's the first one you hit.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Like, nah, please, you've got to meet one, you've got to do at least 10 that 10 10 dates first.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, as if men are so irresistible.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: So once that happened, I was like, I'm not invested in this movie at all.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: It's very unrealistic.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Do you know what?
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Save save your thoughts on Wonder Women.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: We'll bring it up later for the bad for the movie that's well reviewed that you think is bad.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: If you unless you have a good unless you have one bit later.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: So let's let's save that.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: We'll save that.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Uh definitely, uh we'll park it.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: We'll park it.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Because it was definitely well reviewed.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Uh not a ma I don't think it was amazingly reviewed, but it was like I think it was like above like 70% or something.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Nah, that's not the same movie.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna look that up quickly now.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna Google it.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Uh it's definitely like a positive review.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Uh it is you're gonna get so angry.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: 93%.
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean that's not real.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's a lot of bots that do is that audience or critical?
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: No, that's the critical review.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: The audience is lower than that.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: What's the audience?
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: The audience was like 83.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: I'm so they were watching a different film.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: That film was so boring.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: And like at the end, she's not even the hero, the man is the hero.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: And it's just like randomly ends with her being like a historian or something in in the loop.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: What is this?
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: There's no that it's a DC movie, so already you've got to knock 10 points off, you know.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Um all those DC movies are bad.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: I don't like them.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: They go on for too long, and it's yeah, they're just they lack discipline, they lack I don't know.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Anyway, that's one thing about this, actually.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: This is a nice, tidy one hour 40.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, but it's neat, it's it does what it needs to do, and it's out.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, yeah.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: And that's probably why it doesn't make a lot of sense because I think we spend time with useful establishing story, yeah.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: There's nothing established here whatsoever.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: It's just oh, okay, um, we need to get this guy, we need to free some hostages, um, and there we go.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: End of it.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: I think Chun Li has the most like character art, like the character backstory.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: None of them, none of them have.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: She has to quit a job to be Chun Li.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: Like she doesn't start off as Chun Li the warrior, she starts off as the as as a worker, and she just magically knows martial arts.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Or I think she used to do it.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: I can't remember, I can't remember.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: She used to she's been training for a long time, but then what uh Bison says to her is that oh, since you've been here, you've I've never seen you do it once.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: It's always been your assistance, it's always been the other two guys that have done all the fighting and everything, and then she's like, and then she fights him, she's like, That's why I didn't tell you, I kept it a secret, and she like completely beats him up.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well that yeah, that's nice, that's a nice reveal.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a nice reveal, and she like she she gets some good fight scenes in it, actually.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: I'll say that.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: She does get some.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: And um, I don't know, the fact though, who's a sumo wrestler?
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Uh that is uh E Honda's Honda, yes, e Honda, yeah.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Um but um the fact he gets a full name in this as well.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: He like gets like what the E stands for.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: I got what does it sound for?
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: It's not about Eric.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Something like that.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: It's something it's something dumb they give it, like Eric.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: That's yeah, they should have kept the mystery.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: I prefer intrigue.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: Uh I but I totally agree.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: Chanel E it gets the best fights.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: But she's also one of the better fighters in the game, so it makes sense.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Like she's all she was always one of the better ones.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Hip her and Ryu.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I used to be Ryu all the time.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: I used to be Dulcin, but just because it was like easy to win with him.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: And I used to be Blanca as well.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Delson, yeah, and his long arms and his yeah, that that you could you could because you could the key to Street Fighter is crouching.
- 38:36unknown: Yeah.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: Crouching is I would just crouch and like uh stretch my legs or my arms out.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Just they couldn't nobody could come close.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you just didn't like bat the button or just button mash.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: You you guys were the most annoying players because you're not playing the game.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: I know, I know playing the game in it.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: Get up, like come to the fight.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, that's that's frustrating.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: I'm glad we never played Street Fighter together.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't play that now, but it's just as a kid.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: I'm glad to hear you've got some morality now.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Now now I'd play as like one of the actual characters that could fight.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, yeah, like uh I wrote down like um at this point I wrote down Jean-Claude is really bad in this and not in a fun way because like everyone else is there's like bad stuff in it, but it's fun.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: He's just bad in and it's just annoying when he's on screen to me.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Like um, I don't know.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: I just really I you I've made it clear I don't like him.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: So you're you're right, it's not his best performance, but he's uh again, something else I read.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: Um he's um he's been in two movies that made over a hundred million dollars.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: Is this one of them?
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: One of them was Time Cop, the second one Street Fighter.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: Wow, this made over a hundred million.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: You might think he was bad in it, but Okay, I I'll I'll give it a lot.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: This is one of his biggest hits.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: What can I mean?
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: How can you say yes to drugs?
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: That's what it means.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: The thing is, biggest action star, one of the biggest action stars at the time, huge cast, biggest game at the time.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: You can't go wrong with like it's gonna make money.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: It's like a guaranteed hit.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: And also, like, again, this is really like what critics don't like is isn't necessarily what people don't like.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: Like when we go to cinema, we don't always want to watch um of course some something that critics like most of the time, like critics like La La Land.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: I hated La La Land.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: I just thought we I didn't actually I've never finished it.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: I just thought I can't.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Oh really?
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or the other one was um what's the one with uh Bill Murray?
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and he's in he's in like a he's in Japan and he's got like this that's my favourite movie of all time.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: What's it called?
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Lost in translation.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: Um oh no, that's not the movie.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking of something else.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I'm thinking of Birdman, which has not got Bimbo, it's got Michael Keaton.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: Um and that Birdman was just Birdman's terrible, but I hate it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: Like Oscars and stuff, and I'm not, yeah, I just don't get it.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: What am I watching here?
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: Um so it's it's just um what do critics know, man?
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: When we go to cinema, yeah and we're a highly um unhealthy food and we're with our friends.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we just watch we want to watch stuff like that.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I'll watch I'll watch like the other stuff at home.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: I'll watch I'll watch action and fun movies at the cinema.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: I don't want to like go to the cinema and and like have to think too hard.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: I just want to have fun.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: I cop I think that's what it is.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: I completely agree, absolutely agree, especially because you know it's not you you want to escape, you don't want you know, you don't want to watch something that's like gonna remind you how shit the world is.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: I mean maybe you do sometimes, but most of the time I don't want to watch that.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's a lot, and I think that's what that's one of the reasons I started this was just like there's so many movies that are are so low rated that are unfairly rated, and I think there's so many that are so highly rated that for no reason other than they're just like, oh, it's intellectual, so it has to be good, yeah.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: Even though it's not exactly.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: I'm um yeah, I'm I'm a big fan of shit movies at the cinema, definitely.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: So what what are you what else are you into then?
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: What like cinema-wise?
- 42:24unknown: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, I kind of like everything, so I don't really have like um um like a favourite, like, oh, I like these kind of movies.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: I just genuinely What's the last thing you saw that before everything, obviously, but what's the last thing you saw at the cinema?
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: Oh god, that's so funny.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: I can't remember.
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: I can't remember last time.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Um was it Star Wars?
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: I would have probably seen Star Wars maybe in December.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: Um was that this year?
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: That was no, that was that would have been last December.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: Because I think it was.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: I think that's what I mean.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: Was that last December?
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: It feels like so long ago, no.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Um I I don't think I don't think I had a do you know something?
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: Generally would have been it would have been something I saw in December last year because yeah, literally New Year, I was in Ghana for three weeks.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Uh got back, I started um a kind of a bursary job thing, and then it was lockdown, so I didn't really have yeah, and I've I'm not and I'm not going out as much as I used to anyway.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, this year I don't think I've been in cinema this year at all.
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: Now I think on it.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: But I've been watching.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: I see I saw one film this year at the cinema, and that was 1917.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that's good though, right?
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: I think that's great.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was good, yeah, it was good.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: But the the movie I saw before that was Cats, so I'm lucky I saw 1917.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: I'm glad I saw 1917 after that.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: But I've been watching like loads of films um in lockdown, like Netflix, because all they've all they've put them all out on Netflix now.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: Everything's on there now.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: So um Oh, speaking of which, did you see what Disney have done?
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: With uh with Mulan.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: I've had Disney Plus.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: I've not watched it.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Is it good?
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: No, no, they haven't released it yet, but they're releasing it in America at least, uh next month, and it's gonna cost you if you want to watch it, it's thirty dollars to watch it.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Like nobody's gonna pay that.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: In my own home, no, no way.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: No, that's the thing.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: The money I'm saving no the money I'm saving on cinema food, you know, it's not worth it.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: It's ridiculous.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: I don't I think it's just gonna get pirated everywhere.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: No, he's gonna watch it.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: It's uh it's um that's ridiculous.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: And it's a real shame because it's it's too much to watch for free.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: There's so much that and that's the thing, there's so there's so many things even on like Netflix and Disney Plus.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: So like I don't need it.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: It's Amazon as well.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: I I'm paying I don't know.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: I have three accounts of Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: And that's all you're doing.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: Well, I've got I I've got rid of Amazon.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: Um because basically I only have used a free trial, so when it comes out, I just keep me hearing it.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: But I've got Disney Plus on Netflix, um, and they I think they suffice.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: I'm happy with those those.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they've got most of the stuff, so yeah, yeah.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: The worst at least Dis D Disney have everything now because they own everything.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: Do you know what they do, but they have everything franchise.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: So it's just if you're into the franchises, then it's good.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: But if you're not, but I just I mean this is restraining off the top of here, but it's great if you've got kids Disney Plus.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: They like my little one loves loves Disney Plus.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: So um that's like perfect for your for your child.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: Oh man, Disney just make the best kids stuff, so she's obsessed with coffee dog pals and docmac stuff and thought that crap.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: Um six pounds a month is like a child mind that costs fucking ten pounds an hour, so yeah, exactly.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, so let's let's let's finish up with the movie at least.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: It's um the the I mean there's a point in the in this where Gile comes in on his like uh plane slash submarine ship thing, and he goes into stealth mode, and uh uh Bison like starts pressing this arcade machine to like fire at him, and he it's a full-on arcade machine.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: He's it literally looks like the original game, I guess.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: From what I'm imagining, like you're saying it came on an arcade machine originally.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: I'm a ma I think that's just a uh like a call out to whatever that is.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: Um he's pressing the arcade buttons and it fires at uh Guile and explodes up the ship, but Guile's already jumped off of it and he gets into the building.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: Um Blanca gets released, dials him gets covered in radiation, they find out there's no money, they haven't actually transferred the money over to him.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: So he gets really uh to to uh oh god, why do I keep forgetting his name?
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Bison.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Um and then uh he gets really angry and starts like firing everything out.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: They s they released the incubation chamber expecting Blanca to come up and uh Van Damme comes flying out with a kick, and they have they that's when all the fighting starts.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: This is when it this is when it actually gets good.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: Um this is what I enjoy.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: But you said you don't enjoy the fighting.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: Well the fighting's the the last fight scene in is and the fight scene where Bison finally like meets his his grizzly end is good, but the fight scenes generally are quite shit.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: Like even I can admit to that.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Um like even I'll concede that there isn't quite it's not quite the level of combat you're used to.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: You haven't come from the game, which is a mark a Martian.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, the game has so many good fights game, right?
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: So there's nothing translate, it's very little actually from memory translated from the game to the film.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: That's what I was just thinking, actually, as you were saying that.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Even uh Chun Li is like her moves in this and not her moves in the cab.
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: No, no, she doesn't need that kick thing.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: Um there's there's there's nothing there's nothing in the in the movie that should be in the game, or that that is from the game, which is bullshit.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: But that's fine because I still appreciate the flaw.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's basically there's a big fight, and then eventually uh Van Damme fights uh Bison and on a on a bridge, and then they like fall down into the main area, they have a proper fight, and it's like a callback to the game where like the background looks like the game.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: Um at least that's what I read.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: I can't remember that that background in the game to be honest, but that's what I read it was.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, they fight alone, uh, and then I wrote down why has Van Damme got a US flag on his arm?
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: Makes no sense.
- 48:24SPEAKER_02: Because the well the prop it's propaganda, isn't it?
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: Because they've invented um they've invented a country to kind of like be a little and just say is evil or overthrown, but they will never invent a country that is doing the overthrowing and the liberating.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: They'll always say it's America.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course it's America, there's not no country better than America.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: So that's just that's just to make that's just propaganda, isn't it?
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: Like which is ironic because they're trying to bring around the propaganda and they're trying to bring down dictatorship.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah, but anything America does is ironic.
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, he kicks by he kicks bison into the electrics, electric, all this stuff, and he like Yeah, into like the TV screens or whatever, yeah, and then he gets and then he talks he talks about it and he's like uh he talks about it to Kylie and he's like uh she's like oh how you doing?
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: He's like, I'm half dead, he's all dead.
- 49:20SPEAKER_01: Which is just a terrible lie.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Um but that's an accurate description of what happened.
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Kind of he got beaten up, but he's killed the person who beat him up, so there you go.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Kind of accurate he's not dead.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: He's not dead, that's because then he gets up again in the Escanam.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: He gets revived by the machine, like that he's lying on.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because um he gets injected with like everything, and I don't know.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: It's weird.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: Um and then he yeah, then he shocks him.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Uh he like fires out, and it's like the worst graphics you you can imagine.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: But it's fine, it's like early 90s, is what it is.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: It's like he gets like electric shocks, um and then Ro walks into a trap with Vega, they get into a fight, bison jumps up and levitates, and uh he uh he starts flying through the air.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: Yes, because he's gonna fly, because at that point you don't see him fly before that, do you?
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: That's like a new that's a new thing.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: I I don't believe he can fly in the game, if I'm honest.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: Um can he not fly in the game?
- 50:21SPEAKER_02: I'm sure I remember something like that.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: He did that move where he could jump up and he could fly into somebody.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Um so tech maybe it came from that, but at that point in the film he's not flown, it's a new thing.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: No, he's never flown before, but he finally gets like all of his powers, I guess.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, and then Kyle kicks him into electronics again, and then uh all the hostage he dies, all the hostages get freed, and Honda, which is the funniest thing, he just walks away from his fight with uh with the Russian guy.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: He's like, Okay, playtime is over, and he just walk he just gets up and walks away with all of them.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: Um and then Blanca and Delsum decide to stay behind for some reason that this exploding building, they're gonna stay inside it and they hide in like a cave.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: It's not clear.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: Oh but you thought it's one of those things you have to watch again, like like Inception.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: No, no, thank you.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, Guile makes it out even though they think he's dead, but then they find that he's got out.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then he says to and then uh Chun Lee says to him how about that interview?
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: And he replies back, only if you wear that dress.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: And it's just, and then that's the that's the last line in the movie, and it ends there.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: It's that it ends with a bit of sexism.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but then it ends with Bice come back to life again or something.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: I can't remember.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: Does it?
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: I could turn it off at the crack.
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: Oh no, this is a post-credit bit.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: You missed it.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: I didn't expect a post-credit bit pre-marble.
- 51:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 51:49SPEAKER_02: I told you the movie's ahead of its time.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: So I'm I wish I'd watched it again as I could tell you exactly what happened.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: But there's a post-credit bit of because um in the big in the cinema, when I went, you got told not to leave the cinema.
- 52:00SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 52:01SPEAKER_03: They had to tell you back then.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, back then they would tell you because it wasn't like a thing.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: Um I remember seeing like I remember when I went seeing for weapon and they were like, there'll be a surprise at the end.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: Because at the end of weapon movies, they have like a little thing at the end.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, so they did that, and that's well, there you go.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: You missed if you like, oh, takes the whole thing out.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: I've I've lost I've ruined the movie then.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, but it explains why there were a load of other movies we haven't.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: I genuinely didn't know there was more than this movie.
- 52:26SPEAKER_02: I did not, I had no idea.
- 52:28SPEAKER_02: There's loads from the looks of you.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: No idea.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, so that's that's the end of the movie, but like uh you've kind of like lost that you've kind of talked about it throughout the uh the whole of the podcast.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: But what is it that you love about this uh specific movie that makes it a good movie?
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: Because it try you know something, it tries so hard, it really tries hard, you know.
- 52:49SPEAKER_02: It tries so hard to say we want to make a movie that reflects the spirit of this game, and they do see they've tried to do it, they just had their work cut out with budget, yeah, you know, the coke head and all this stuff.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: Um and it it kind of if you if you ask very little of it, it provides it's like going to McDonald's.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: If you ask little of your food experience, McDonald's is fantastic, you know.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: This is a very McDonald's movie.
- 53:20SPEAKER_02: If you just want to be satiated, then then what more could you ask for?
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: And with this film, it's like what are you asking for?
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: You're asking for characters you've heard of, wearing uniforms recognized, beating each other up, things being blown up, and famous people.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: So what should yeah, so that 10% is very, very um ungenerous, absolutely.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I have a do I do have a question you might possibly be able to answer.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Uh let me know, I don't know if you can or not, but like, why do you think that uh the audience didn't like it?
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: Because I know I also read that at the time it came out the audience were very angry about it.
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, well, I mean, I don't know.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: I think that the all people are dumb that you know that they voted for Trump.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 54:05SPEAKER_02: Like, what do they know?
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: Um, no, I think I think maybe they expected more out of the league because it's the famous people that were in it, they expected and what you said about it looking a bit cheap and nasty.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: If you if you were able to recognise the cheap and nastiness of it, then obviously But it might not look cheap at the time, I don't know.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: It just looks cheap in retrospect now.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: It probably did look cheap at the time to be fair.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: If the if the set is if the set is shaking, you know, they did they do you know did you see a John Wayne set shake?
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: Do you see what I'm saying?
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: Like they made that stuff in the 50s and 60s, so um yeah, it's it's probably to do with it failing on other indicate on other things that they would have expected it to do had done well on, isn't it?
- 54:48SPEAKER_02: I still defend it.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: I still def I still think it's uh it's way higher than 10.
- 54:53SPEAKER_02: I would say it's a 35%.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: So that's still not great.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's still okay.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: That's still enough to qualify for this podcast.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, is it?
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, 42%.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, just yeah, okay, just outside.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Um, do you have anything else we want to say about it specifically?
- 55:09SPEAKER_02: No, I rest my case.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: You rest your case.
- 55:11SPEAKER_01: Okay, great.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: Uh let's talk about let's bring it back to that uh the w the well-reviewed movie that you think is bad then.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: Uh which you do you want to go with Wonder Woman or you can go with another person?
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: So I say Lalaland, should I do Burbank?
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: Let's go with Wonder Woman, yeah.
- 55:24SPEAKER_02: So let's do Wonder Woman.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: So I wasn't aware that was well-reviewed.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: First of all, it's too long.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: It's a three-act film, and it each act is like an hour.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: I've never, it's unheard of.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: It's just and the f and the the the most frustrating thing is the message that is is coming um from each act is just it doesn't need it doesn't take an hour for me to learn she lives on an island full of women and she's been trained by them and they don't want her to leave.
- 55:48SPEAKER_02: Like, I just sort of feel like I've just said it and it took me three seconds.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: So that is that the establishment of her and her life is just ludicrous.
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: I found the whole thing about when she ends up on like in America and it's 1940s American there, that whole charade of her um being educated as just how to look normal was just it's quite a cliche rate Eliza do little, right?
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: So again, they didn't need to belagger that because we've seen it all before.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: Unless you're gonna bring a lot, unless you're gonna bring something new or funny, and there's lots of things that happen in that sequence, which is a very long sequence of nonsense that are supposed to be funny and they're not funny.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: I didn't laugh once, so I was like, this is none of this is this is supposed to be funny, but and it's coming across as zany.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: Please, if there's one thing that I cannot tolerate, it's zaniness.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: Zany.
- 56:39SPEAKER_02: Oh if someone just if someone describes themselves to me as zany, I'm like, we're not gonna get on.
- 56:44SPEAKER_00: That's not your comedy.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna do that in your stand up.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: In that kind of they're doing it on purpose, they're probably perfectly that what zany is what what what people what boring people adopt as form.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: There's nothing, there's no natural weirdness about it.
- 56:59SPEAKER_02: It's very, it's very American high school.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm just a bit zany, like go away.
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: Just a bit weird, it just weird at all.
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: There's nothing nothing weird about these guys.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: Um, so that annoyed me.
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: Secondly, the whole thing about her like falling in love with this guy, and I was just like, like I said, the first guy really like you spent this whole you spent your whole life how men are trashed, and you meet a guy, and you know, oh, I'll change my mind.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: Like, what?
- 57:21SPEAKER_02: This this guy, um, it that's annoying.
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: And I I'll skip forward.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: It does, it gets okay.
- 57:27SPEAKER_02: Once once the if you watch this movie, I suppose it's got it, it takes about an hour and 45 to get going.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: It's only until you get to that hour 45 point you realise that they've got to go.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Um, and there's the evil person who's got this scar in their face or whatever, the dis because the evil person is always disfigured because they're and you know, um, it was which is really I'm just sick of that stereotype as well, to be honest.
- 57:47SPEAKER_02: Um and um, you know, the whole thing about but there's something with bombs in in something continental Europe, I can't remember anymore, but there's the it doesn't get moving until an hour and 45.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: So any movie that I have got to sit through an hour forty five, an hour forty-five, just to kind of get how is that a good thing?
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: And finally, finally, when it gets to the climax of a movie, the man is the hero.
- 58:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but this is about Wonder Woman.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: Why is the man that's literally Wonder Woman?
- 58:16SPEAKER_02: She made a film about Wonder Woman, which is supposed to be this incredibly liberating and interesting, blah blah blah blah blah thing, and the man's the hero, and then fast forward, and now she's in the lube going, That was wasn't that nice.
- 58:29SPEAKER_02: What do you do?
- 58:31SPEAKER_02: She's an archivist or something.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: Why did she go back to her islands and say, Well, I had sex with a guy who's uh and he's dead now because he saved my life, because they make you know they made him make that ultimate sacrifice movie.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: I thought that was just so it was boring, it took too long to get going, and once it got going, it was good, but then it ended um use it with the man being the saviour.
- 58:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe maybe I don't know, maybe it's good that he gave his life and she didn't, like disposable collateral damage.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but I thought it was I thought so, and also um what there was something about her uniform that really annoyed me.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: I can't remember what it was.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: It was just like shoot her where she's not covered.
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: Like, because most of her isn't covered, and she's batting away arrows with her like her wrists, and I literally all of her legs are bare, like shoot her there, right?
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: She is not covered anywhere else.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: Um, um, so I thought that annoyed me as that that annoyed me as well.
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: Um that nonsense that is the most passionate, like angry at a film so far on this podcast.
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: It's really bad, and I think I'll tell you why it made me really um annoyed.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: I didn't watch it until a little while after it'd been released.
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: So whilst it had been released, all I saw was feminists going, Oh my god, Wonder Woman's amazing, Wonder Woman's this, Wonder Woman's that, and I was like, Oh cool, it's really good.
- 59:53SPEAKER_02: And when I watched it, I was like, You love so easily bought, you know what I mean?
- 59:57SPEAKER_02: Like, nah man, you can't like you can't just just because it's called Wonder Woman, you can't say it's good.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: Um and Galgado's alright in it.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not no, you know, no hate on her, like you know, she's not a bad lead, she just has a bad film, it's a bad film.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just I was so I think I was so disappointed by the contrast between what I'd been told to what I saw.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I that's why I hate it more.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: Uh are you gonna see the second one?
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, they're making a second one, yeah.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_02: I wasn't aware of that.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: Um no.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_02: Set in the 80s.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_02: No, I wasn't gonna, I'm not no, I'm I will not see the second one.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: Not unless the runtime is 90 minutes.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_02: If it's got a runtime that's not gonna be, is it?
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a bit c isn't it?
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_02: And it's gonna be just it's you know, it's it's gonna have lots of setup we don't need, and it's gonna it's gonna have it's gonna be it's gonna have jokes that aren't funny in it and all this stuff.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna have a lot of 80s references, and that's gonna I think that's gonna be the the the jokes around it.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_02: I know that's gonna be tiresome, but you know, it's gonna be very tiresome because I can see them getting it wrong, you know.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I'm not looking forward to it.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: I'm not I don't want to watch that.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: That's fair enough.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, uh well this has been great.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: Um how uh have you got any plugs?
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_01: How can we find you?
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, plugs, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: Just my podcast.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: So I've got a podcast myself called Keefe and Athena Company.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: So if you just look for Keefe and Athena Company, um you'll find it.

- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: Is that all you all you want to plug?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_02: That's it, that's all I got going on.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: I wish I had more, but I've got fuck all going on, excuse my language, but everything nothing else I'm doing is worth talking about, unfortunately.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: Alright, well, yeah, thanks for coming on.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's been very interesting, and uh hopefully some people's minds have been changed about Street Fighter.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, if not, shame on them.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: Great, thank you.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
