- 2:35be able to vote. You can't ask for a Republican ballot or you know

- 2:42controversy with that. I'm gonna talk about that coming up a little bit later
- 2:44on. Plus, there was a big event happening this weekend and Hurricane Hurricane.
- 2:49I live there and I just pronounced it hurricane. I can't believe that

- 3:13executive director, the president, the CEO, whatever title you want to give
- 3:16her. She's a boss at Advantage Valley. Taryl, good morning, Welcome
- 3:20to the show. Good morning, Thanks for having me, Thank you for
- 3:23being here. You folks at Advantage Valley just completed a housing study for the
- 3:27valley. Now it's been well publicized the fact there it was a public event
- 3:30held last week in one of my hangout, Sleepy Hollow there in Tayese Valley.
- 3:34What was the purpose of the study? Well, thanks for having me,
- 3:38Dave, and I think if we could all sit back and think about
- 3:42what we know about housing in our region. And let me be clear,
- 3:46the region is the Charleston and Huntington metro areas in some of the surrounding counties.
- 3:52I think we all understand if you've tried to go out and buy a
- 3:53house lately or run an apartment, that you're having a hard time, and
- 4:00whatever inventory is on the market might might not suit your needs. So the
- 4:03purpose of the study, we intuitively know that we have an issue with housing.
- 4:08And by the way, housing is really a national housing issue. It's
- 4:12not just for the Advantage Valley region or West Virginia. Nationally, we have
- 4:17a housing crunch. So what we wanted to do is better understand how our
- 4:21housing market is evolving, and particularly in the light of all the great announcements
- 4:27that we've heard in the region in the past couple of years, New Core
- 4:30Berkshire, Hathaway Energy, a stamp, Toyota's adding jobs. I mean,
- 4:33the list goes on, and we're seeing tremendous investment in the region, creating
- 4:38new jobs. And if we think that we have an issue with housing now,
- 4:42we want to know how are those investments going to impact our housing market
- 4:46in the future. So that was kind of the primary reason, so that
- 4:48we could better articulate that. So overall, and we'll get specifically just a
- 4:55bit of an overall what did the study find. Well, it found some
- 4:59things that I think I think we all knew, but it also pointed out
- 5:01some really other interesting facts. Before we get into the findings, I want
- 5:08to make sure that people understand that this wasn't like some consultant sitting in an
- 5:12office somewhere in Columbus, Ohio who just concocted a bunch of numbers and then
- 5:16gave them to us. We had over twelve hundred people respond either through interviews
- 5:23or surveys. We made a real point of talking to employers about the housing
- 5:28issue as well, and nearly thirty percent of employers in our region indicated that
- 5:32they had difficulty attracting or retaining employees due to housing issues. Their employees could
- 5:39not get housing close to the place of employment, and almost seventy percent of
- 5:44employers said that they were likely or somewhat likely to employ more people in the
- 5:48next three years if additional housing was built. I think you know everybody.
- 5:54The response the residents and commuters who responded to the survey indicated that there was
- 6:00a high need for certain types of housing. And we talk to developers as
- 6:04well about what's keeping you from not building more housing, and it is a
- 6:09lack of land and infrastructure and the cost of materials right now that's keeping them
- 6:14from building more housing. So what are some of the key things that we
- 6:18found out while we all knew that there were new jobs coming in, the
- 6:25number of new jobs and how that multiplies in our economy was quite eye opening.
- 6:30So we look at the fact that after talking to employers, assessing all
- 6:35the data that's out there about new jobs coming in, there's over five thousand
- 6:40new jobs that are projected to come into the region. Those are direct jobs,
- 6:44most of them in the manufacturing sector, but those all have a spin
- 6:47off effect. So if I'm an employee a new job at new Core or
- 6:53one of these other manufacturers, for every job that comes in, there's a
- 6:57multiplier effect for people. You know, I need to go by gas,
- 7:00I need to get my haircut, I need to go shopped at the grocery
- 7:03store. So we looked at how many indirect jobs are going to be created
- 7:09by that. So there were nearly fifteen thousand new indirect jobs coming in.
- 7:13So now you're looking at approximately twenty thousand new direct and indirect jobs coming into
- 7:18the region and this is projected over the next five or six years. So
- 7:23what does that mean in terms of households? Right our demographics, we were
- 7:28on a trajectory of losing households. With this information, with those new jobs
- 7:32coming in. We now are looking at increasing the number of households in the
- 7:36region to the tune of about thirteen thousand, which is pretty significant. That
- 7:42reverses a decline that we've seen for a long time. I mean that's and
- 7:46again go back ten fifteen years ago, and you've been in economic development in
- 7:50this sort of realm for some time, and I've studied it. I'm certainly
- 7:55not an expert, but I mean to think about this time in twenty fourteen
- 7:59or two thousand four or whenever, that we'd be talking about adding thirteen thousand
- 8:01households. I mean, that's that's incredible, right. So we were looking
- 8:05at, you know, by about twenty twenty eight, being down to about
- 8:09you know, two hundred thousand households in the region, and with this new
- 8:13edition of households, we're now back up to about two hundred and thirteen thousand
- 8:16by about twenty twenty eight. So we're delighted about that. But what that
- 8:22points out is, you know, if we have a housing issue now now
- 8:26we're adding new households, so what is the total magnitude of that issue before
- 8:31we get to that though, one thing that we discovered through this process is
- 8:35not just that we need to add new rental units, new single family homes,
- 8:43but we also looked at affordability in our region and how many units are
- 8:46available right now to people in certain income categories. And it was very eye
- 8:54opening. If you look at the top thirty five occupations in our region,
- 9:00and many of them are service industry, forty nine percent, almost fifty percent
- 9:05of the people in those top occupy top thirty five occupations cannot afford to pay
- 9:11whatever fair market value is for a two bedroom apartment, and seventy nine percent
- 9:16cannot afford to buy a home and what the average home rate sales price is
- 9:22in their county. So and on top of that, not only is the
- 9:26price point not in their range, but they can't even find anything. For
- 9:31the entire region, we had a one percent vacancy rate for rental units we
- 9:39surveyed, Like the consultant literally got on the phone and called over ten thousand
- 9:45apartment building or ten thousand units, you know, covered apartment buildings with ten
- 9:48thousand units. One percent, one hundred were vacant in the entire region.
- 9:56How the healthy market, you should have between four and six percent vacancy so
- 9:58people can move around. Sure, we don't have. In Kannaw County,
- 10:03zero point six percent were vacant. So we've got an issue with accessibility and
- 10:09affordability and on the in the existing trends for for sale housing, and people
- 10:15have said, well, what did interest rates do? I mean interest rates
- 10:18went up and shouldn't that have depressed the market so there should be more houses
- 10:22available? Well, yeah, in twenty twenty three there were fewer houses available
- 10:28on the market than twenty twenty two. And you would have thought that pricing
- 10:31would have gone down. It did not. Pricing rose continued to rise.
- 10:35So over a three year period from twenty twenty to twenty twenty three, we
- 10:41saw a sixteen percent increase in our pricing and it doesn't look like it's coming
- 10:45down. So and again, I know your role in this whole thing.
- 10:50And again we're talking with the Taryll Ellis of the Advantage Valley on this housing
- 10:54survey and the findings were released last week. So your role is to kind
- 10:58of bring all this down. And I know it's not to how to fix
- 11:01it, but I'm gonna ask the question, how do we fix it?
- 11:05How do we fix these problems? Well? Can I talk about one more
- 11:09things? So we go to how to fix it. Yeah, sure,
- 11:11because we've kind of talked about what's existing here already and now we're adding thirteen
- 11:16thousand more units. So what does that mean in terms of the number of
- 11:20more rental and for sale single family homes that we're going to need in this
- 11:24region over the next five to six years. For the entire region now we're
- 11:30talking ten counties, we're looking at needing an additional eleven thousand rental units over
- 11:37the course of the next five to six years, and for single family for
- 11:41sale housing, we need about twenty thousand more units. Now, let me
- 11:45be clear, that's to address the vacancy rate, the lack of vacancies,
- 11:50to create more of a healthy market. So it's to allow for everything from
- 11:56the lower end of the market to the higher end of the market in terms
- 12:00of creating more housing for people here and to accommodate the people coming in and
- 12:05in Canaw County because I know, you know, particularly Knawk County and Putnam
- 12:09County. Canaw we're going to need about twenty eight hundred more rental units and
- 12:13Putnam's going to need about thirteen hundred more, and in Kana we need about
- 12:18fifty three hundred more for sale housing and Putnam twenty seven hundred. So those
- 12:24are they sound like they're daunting numbers, but again we're breaking it down over
- 12:28five or six years. So your question is what are we going to do?
- 12:35And it's a very good question. It's a complicated issue. I think
- 12:39that the state has done a couple of They've created the Build West Virginia Act.
- 12:43That's created some incentives for developers. That's great, and we need to
- 12:48get our communities to engage with that and get designated, you know, as
- 12:52an area that they can execute on that program. I think one of the
- 12:56things we need to do is make the development community aware of the opportunity here.
- 13:03You know, West Virginia gets overlooked a lot in terms of development,
- 13:07and there's other places that people are going to develop housing right now. We
- 13:13need to make sure that developers both in the state, in our region and
- 13:16outside the state are aware of this opportunity. So we're going to be spending
- 13:20a lot of time talking to the development community about this. But I also
- 13:24think it's incumbent on us locally to start looking at our community and say where
- 13:31can we identify sites? Because you know, the first thing to turn a
- 13:35developer off is if they come into your community and say, well, I
- 13:37see that there's a great opportunity here, but where can I you know,
- 13:41where are the sites? And we're like, well, we're not really sure.
- 13:43Maybe over here, maybe we could create some infrastructure over here, and
- 13:48that'll be in a couple of years. We've got to get our acting.
- 13:52We don't have a couple of years. We don't have a couple of years.
- 13:54You're exactly right. So education and outreach to the local community and doing
- 14:00things to get our act together locally, as well as making sure the word
- 14:03gets out. I think, you know, the governor has a proposal to
- 14:07create a fifty million dollar incent a fun to incentivize more housing. I don't
- 14:13know much about the details of that, but I think anything that the public
- 14:18sector can do to help drive down that cost for development right now, I
- 14:24think we need that to jumpstart what we need in the area. And there
- 14:28were some articles I know yesterday Arrrell's. We started to wrap it up,
- 14:31I know in the I actually my mind still thinks the Sunday paper, but
- 14:35then the Saturday paper, that's the weekend paper, I guess for the zet
- 14:39mail. There was an article about some about some housing developers and things of
- 14:43that nature in there. I know where outsaid I live in Putnam County.
- 14:46I know there are units going up, but we we simply need more.
- 14:50We simply need more, and we did take that into account in our report,
- 14:56any projects that were already underway or already permitted. And there's a lot
- 15:00being talked about and that's great, so we just help hope that those come
- 15:03to fruition. Where can people learn more about this stuff? Because I know
- 15:07I'm kind of a geek about this. I can spend all show on this,
- 15:09But where could people learn more about this survey or about Advantage Valley as
- 15:15a movement in general. Well, we welcome you to come to our website.

- 18:37Lots to get to politically coming up a little bit later on. The
- 18:40filing period ended at twelve oh one a m. Sunday morning, and there
- 18:45were some last minute filings on Friday and Saturday. As you may expect,
- 18:48some names that you probably will recognize. I'm going to try to get into
- 18:51those a little bit later on. Plus, the State Republican Party, the
- 18:55Executive Committee made the decision on Saturday at their meeting here in Charleston to close
- 19:00the primary to independence, but it won't be to twenty twenty six. We're
- 19:03going to get into that a little bit later on as well. This Saturday,
- 19:07it's going to be a huge event at Hurricane City Park. It's a
- 19:11twenty twenty four polar plunge, or it's called freezing for a reason. Love
- 19:15that name. It's a benefit for Special Olympics. John CORBTT is here to
- 19:18talk about it. John, good morning, Welcome to the show. Good
- 19:19morning, Dave. How are you, sir? I'm fine, Thank you
- 19:22for being here. It's this Saturday, starts with registration at three point thirty
- 19:26at Hurricane City Park. It's going to be a huge event, John,
- 19:27talk about it. It truly is. Not only is it a huge event,
- 19:30it's also a fun and entertaining event. We have folks come up from
- 19:34throughout the area to come have a little fun jumping in the pool in the
- 19:37middle of winter and do a wonderful job raising funding for Special Epics West Virginia
- 19:44and thousands of Special Epics West Virginia athletes throughout the state. So it's going
- 19:48to be a great time as always, and like I say, an entertaining
- 19:52time. I'm looking to head to the extended forecast right now. My weather
- 19:55people always tell me, you know, you can't put that much into a
- 19:59four caca that far in advance, But it looks like it's not really going
- 20:03to be freezing, but it could be better. It's going to be about
- 20:06forty or forty one off for a high on Saturday. But it is at
- 20:10least going to be sunny, at least that's what it looks like right now.
- 20:12That's true. Mother nature always wins. That's one thing we have learned
- 20:15over the years. But you know, we're we're planning to set the pool
- 20:18up Friday and so it filled it up and let it sit overnight so that
- 20:23we can get the pool as cold as possible. We'd like to give everybody
- 20:26the full polar plunge experience. If you know what I'm so you're gonna add
- 20:30on too. It's like kind of like making fake snow at a ski resort.
- 20:33Is that right? That is absolutely right. We traditionally have a little
- 20:37ice form on the pool overnight and we make sure we build in some time
- 20:41to break that ice and get it out of the pool before folks start taking
- 20:44the plunge. But we promise it'll be nice and cold just for them.

- 21:08there's going to be a costume contest. What kind of costumes are you hoping
- 21:11to see? Well, we have everything from your traditional Halloween type costumes,
- 21:18from superheroes to the crew from Scooby Doo, etceter. But we also have
- 21:23some folks that get very creative and come up with their own costumes. We've
- 21:26had ice cubes, frozen bags of peas, doughnuts, and hot chocolate,
- 21:33homemade costumes, just whatever moves people as long as it's in good taste.
- 21:38We encourage them to come out and compete in the costume contest, and then
- 21:41most of them actually take the plunge in their costumes as well. So it's
- 21:45always a sight to behold when we see some of those costumes. Well,
- 21:49let's talk about exactly what goes on at the polar plunge. I know,
- 21:53everybody gets cold and everybody you know gets dunked in water, but exactly how
- 21:56does the whole thing work? Yeah, we set up a rather large pool
- 22:00there at Hurricane City Park with a help of volunteers and the Hurricane City staff
- 22:07and get that ready for everybody. It's four and a half feet deep.
- 22:11Folks can plunge two at a time, but there's only one exit ladder,
- 22:15so that's always entertaining to watch folks fight for the exit ladder as they try
- 22:19to get out of the pool. But they basically show up. They can
- 22:23plunge with a friend, a colleague, a coworker, or by themselves,
- 22:29but up to two of the time under the water and we count them down.
- 22:33And I have found that if folks don't actually jump off the ladders,
- 22:37the crowd will boo them, so there's a little warning in of vans.
- 22:41But it's a simple concept. Folks go out and raise money to support their
- 22:47participation in the polar plunge. They show up the day of registration starts at
- 22:51three point thirty and goes up until the plunge time at five. We get
- 22:55them in line, we get them in and out of the water. We
- 22:56have changing barns there that they can go change their clothes and get warm afterwards,
- 23:03and then we have an after party at fireside grill so it's it's a
- 23:06full evening. I want to mention the folks that at Fireside Grill, it's
- 23:10one of my favorite places, Rob and Judy and the entire folks. Anything
- 23:12going on in the community there in Putnam County, Man, they're all about
- 23:17it. They just so hats off to them. Yeah. Absolutely, we
- 23:22think that folks that have braved the cold water deserve to come join us for
- 23:26a couple hours afterwards and share their plunged ventures and eat and drink and have
- 23:32a good time. And when we recognize those folks who raise the most money
- 23:36and and have the best costumes at the after party as well. So always
- 23:40a lively evening. And you got some swag, I understand for the people
- 23:44that take the plunge, Is that right? Yeah, everybody that plunges and
- 23:47raises them in dollars gets the Polar Plunged T shirt. But we do have
- 23:51folks that like to get the hoodies and some other prizes. So the more
- 23:55they raise, the more they get, and the more we appreciate that and
- 24:00us all the proceeds benefit to Special Olympics. And I know we spent a
- 24:03lot of time talking about Special Olympics here on the show, John, but
- 24:07talk about your involvement with Special Olympics and how special it is. For lack
- 24:11of a better term, Yeah, we serve literally more than four thousand individuals
- 24:15in West Virginia that have intellectual disabilities, and some of them also have physical
- 24:21disabilities, and we give them opportunities for year round sports training and competition.
- 24:26I think we all know how enjoyable sports can be, and these individuals who
- 24:30have disabilities also enjoy and love the opportunity to play sports, and so we
- 24:33give them that throughout the year. And we actually have two of our six
- 24:37state events are held right here in the area. Our Summer Games, which
- 24:42are typically their first weekend in June where they'll come in and compete in track
- 24:45and field and swimming and softball and bachie and tennis and some other sports.
- 24:51And also our state bowling Championship is held here in the area in December.
- 24:55So we make sure they have opportunities to play sports, show everybody what their
- 24:59cap of accomplishing when given the chance, and we recognize them for their accomplishments
- 25:03and send them home champions. How many people typically take the polar plunge,
- 25:08Jean, We have typically over the years have between one hundred and one hundred
- 25:12and fifty people actually plunge, and of course there's another two three four hundred
- 25:17people in the audience cheering them on or who in an awing as they hit
- 25:22the cold water. So it's a it's a pretty nice event for us.
- 25:25And so for those people that maybe like myself or or maybe Ryan, my
- 25:30producer, who really don't want to take the polar plunge but we'd like to
- 25:32cheer people on, is there something for I mean, can we still contribute?
- 25:36Because you can they still make donations? How does that work? Absolutely,
- 25:40we welcome any donations and you might find somebody, you know, again
- 25:44a friend of coworker, a family member who is willing to take the plunge
- 25:45and you say, you know, here's some money for you. It's a
- 25:48sports your participation. But even if that's not the case, you know,
- 25:52donations can be made, and we have a website dedicated specifically to our polar
- 25:56Plunge, which is a soowv dot org backslash Polar Dash Plunge, and they
- 26:04can go there and there's a donate button and they can either say I'm going
- 26:07to support an individual nor I'm just going to support the ben itself and so
- 26:12again give us that website so we can make sure that everybody has it.
- 26:17Yes, it's soowv dot org, backslash Polar Dash Plunge. And also know
- 26:25you have a presence on social media. I went on your social media page
- 26:27here on Facebook and stole the graphic that I did in my preview this morning,
- 26:32so you can also check it out there. So it is this Saturday
- 26:34at Hurricane City Park twenty twenty four, Polar Plunge, Freezing for a reason,
- 26:38the benefit Special Olympics of West Virginia. Registration starts at three point thirty.
- 26:44It's going to be a huge event, it always is. All kinds
- 26:45of different prizes available if you want to take the plunge, if you just
- 26:48want to cheer people on, if you want to sponsor somebody, get with
- 26:52John, or just show up there at Hurricane City Park this coming Saturday at
- 26:56three point thirty. Then go party with Rob and the fine folks fireside grill

- 27:03wouldn't be possible without the City of Hurricane, So a big shout out to
- 27:06Mayor Edwards into Amanda and all the folks there with the city as well.
- 27:08Absolutely there are always a huge help. And Dave, just in case you're
- 27:11curious, we do have room in the pool for you if you want to
- 27:15join us, well I'll consider that. How's that fair enough? John,
- 27:21I appreciate you being here man, Thanks a lot. Thanks Dave, we
- 27:22appreciate you as well. All right, John Corb. But again with the
- 27:25Special Olympics. The Polard Plunge is this Saturday at registration starts at three point
- 27:30thirty at a Hurricane City park and again a big shout out to a Mayor
- 27:34Edwards and Amanda and everybody with the City of Hurricane because they're the ones that
- 27:37really kind of hike this thing up and make it a huge, huge We're
- 27:41talking about a couple hundred people that are going to be there and they're all
- 27:44gonna take that plunge. It again, long range forecast doesn't sound like it's
- 27:48going to be all that cold, but it's still gonna be forty degrees and
- 27:51they're gonna do something to make the water maybe a little bit colder. But
- 27:53a lot could change between nowaday, but it's a great event and again it
- 27:56all benefits Special Olympics here in the area. So hats off to John and

- 28:53day. What's the deal? Well, this show is ever evolving, as
- 28:59you know, I've been doing the Shit Show for four years in May.
- 29:02I'm not sure the exact date off the top of my head, but sometime
- 29:04in May. It's been four years since, and I've done different things,
- 29:07and I've you know, did the Friday Funhouse and the guest host and Mayor

- 29:37fun House may come back. I don't know, we'll see. Uh.
- 29:41Texts says this is from Friday as well. Not even a mention of Trump
- 29:45blowing up border discussions, said, well, I had other stuff on Friday,
- 29:49like five guests on the show on Friday, but uh yeah, and
- 29:55what the texture is referring to, and of course this text came in on
- 29:57Friday is a former president and that Donald Trump is urging a no a no

- 30:11if we can a little bit later on a couple of news note see what

- 33:47couple of quick notes here. I haven't brought this up for a while,
- 33:51but the potential closure to the Postal Services distribution Center at South Threege it's still
- 33:57a thing. First of all, on front, the West Virginia Senate adopted
- 34:02Senate Resolution sixteen to show their support for keeping the facility open. Now,
- 34:07there's going to be a meeting held tomorrow at two thirty at the Coliseum of
- 34:12Convention Center to address this potential closing. Now, I'm not sure the exact
- 34:16format or the details of the Jeff Jenkins is in. What do we got,
- 34:21Jeff? They postponed the meeting. They postponed the meeting. Yeah,
- 34:23yeah, so the meeting. We found out over the weekend that the meeting
- 34:28will take that story down from our website. But the meeting has been postponed.
- 34:32There's no reset date okay yet. So we found out from the Postal
- 34:37Workers Union they were supposed to have a informational picket today just to try to,
- 34:44you know, get some information out before tomorrow afternoon's meeting. But now
- 34:47there's been no there's no meeting, no new date set, but the Postal
- 34:52Service says there will be a meeting at some point, a public meeting.
- 34:54Okay, just don't know which. I'm glad you listened to the show.
- 34:59Absolutely all right. Well, okay, so the meeting has been has been
- 35:02postponed. We don't know whether it be so what about the informational picket?
- 35:06Is that still going to be a thing that's postponed? So everything's postponed?
- 35:08All right, Jeff, I appreciate it. Man, think Jeff Jenkins with

- 35:44scheduled for tomorrow at Kyle Seamen Convention Center on the potential closure of the Postal
- 35:47Services distribution center out near south Ridge that has been postponed. No date has
- 35:52been given for a makeup as of now. All right, So elsewhere,
- 35:59on Saturday, the state Republican Party held their winter meeting in Charleston, and
- 36:04among the items covered was the closing of the Republican primary, which is going
- 36:10to happen, but it's not going to be right away. There were those
- 36:14that wanted the primary to be a closed primary as early as this year,
- 36:21which was very problematic for a lot of reasons. They put it to a
- 36:24vote of the Executive Committee and the vote went sixty five fifty four, and
- 36:30the committee did vote to close the Republican primary, but again it will be
- 36:35in twenty twenty six, not this year, which well, I'll get into
- 36:39that a little bit later on. But the timing I think is very important
- 36:45here because it would have been in my opinion and talking to those, and
- 36:47I got a little bit of background and experience at this. It would have
- 36:52been a nightmare for twenty twenty four to try to pull this off on behalf
- 36:54of the county clerks and things of that nature. So it's now going to
- 36:58be in twenty twenty six. Now what does all this mean, Well,
- 37:00it means if you're a registered independent, you will not be able to request
- 37:06a Republican ballot as it stands now, if you're registered as an independent or
- 37:13no party on election day, when you walk into your polling place devote in
- 37:16the primary, you simply state your name and say I'm Dave. I'm a
- 37:22registered independent, but I'm requesting a Republican ballot or Democratic ballot as it were.
- 37:30So the Executive Committee has spoken on this, and again I spent some
- 37:34time talking about this last week. The parties themselves have the right to set
- 37:40their own rules. That's just the way it is. This is not a
- 37:44legislature thing or Secretary of State or whatever. The parties can pretty much set
- 37:47their own rules. But the Executive Committee, many of whom in talking to
- 37:52them, believed that there were far too many, as they call it,
- 37:58rhinos getting involve they wanted to keep it to just Republicans, and again they
- 38:02wanted to have it in this upcoming election. It's been put off to twenty
- 38:08twenty six, So if you're a registered independent, starting in May of twenty
- 38:15twenty six, you will not be able to request a Republican ballot. You
- 38:19can still request a democratic ballot, or you can vote for the nonpartisan races,
- 38:22meaning you can vote for judge or to education magistrates, etc. It's
- 38:30controversial as well, in my opinion, as it should be. And I've
- 38:36said, nobody really cares what I think, but I have simply said I
- 38:39don't agree with him, but I don't know that again, anybody really cares
- 38:44what I think. You have basically a lot of independence out there. You
- 38:52know, the independent party or lack of party is growing in West Virginia,
- 39:00and the polling numbers back this up that the majority of independence choose a Republican
- 39:10ballot. So someone along the way got it in their heads that the so
- 39:17called Rhinos Republican name only as they call them, have too much say in
- 39:22Republican politics in West Virginia and they want to shut them out of the process.
- 39:27Okay, that's the right of the party. Each party makes their own
- 39:30rules for their party. I just feel me, Dave, just me that
- 39:37they're making a huge mistake. I really really do, because there's a lot
- 39:43of people in certain area, and I know I see this particularly in southern
- 39:45West Virginia where people may have been a registered Democrat for many, many years,
- 39:52got fed up with the State Democratic part or the National Democratic Party really
- 39:57and they switch to independent. But they can still go in and request a
- 40:01ballot, and they usually do request a Republican ballot. And if that were
- 40:07to be the case in twenty twenty four, it's not. It's going to
- 40:10be in twenty twenty six now if someone wants to I was talking to somebody
- 40:15over the weekend who is a is a big time Trump supporter and is also
- 40:22a registered independent, and that person said, there's gonna be a whole lot
- 40:25of people that are going to be upset if they can't cast their vote for
- 40:30Trump and they're a registered independent, they can only vote for again, board
- 40:35magistrate, judge, so on and so forth. And who are they going
- 40:37to blame for that? Well, in the moment, they're not going to
- 40:40blame the legislature. They're not going to blame the party for doing this.
- 40:47They are going to blame the poll worker. And trust me, it is
- 40:52hard enough to get poll workers in West Virginia. So they're going to take
- 40:55out if they come in and they're an independent voter, and they come in
- 41:00and they say, I'm an independent, but I want a Republican ballot because
- 41:02I want to vote for Donald Trump or fill in Republican here. It seems
- 41:06to be Trump as the leading one, but it can be any of them.
- 41:08They're not gonna think, well, the state party past this, or
- 41:12why didn't the legislat They're gonna look an eighty eight year old Hattie here,
- 41:15who is who is the poll worker, and they're gonna blame her or whomever
- 41:22for it. By putting it off to twenty twenty six, it does,
- 41:25at least, I will say, give them time to educate voters and to
- 41:35explain to them that the Republican Party, or at least certain members in West
- 41:38Virginia don't want you to be a part of the process. So it's over
- 41:43and done. I feel it's very short sighted. We have the Republican Executive
- 41:46Committee West Virginia, but again just my opinion, tex says the primary should
- 41:52still stay open. Thankfully, some very smart, brave folks were able to
- 41:55whip voats to delay this bad move till twenty twenty six. Hopefully West Virginia
- 42:00Republican Party can reverse this foolish decision before the twenty twenty six primary. Tex
- 42:06says, Dave, we can thank Trump for the closing of the postal facility.
- 42:10It's his appointee that's wanted to close these facilities. For Trump, Texas,
- 42:17at least the Republicans left the primary open for this election. Now I
- 42:21can go vote against Patty Cakes. Morris, he go back to New Jersey,
- 42:24Patty Cakes. That's a text, Texas said. Republican politicians are always
- 42:29exclusionary. Do you meet the totally made up Rhino definition. If so,
- 42:34you're not a real Republican. Do you love a rapist? What? Congratulations,
- 42:37you're a real Republican. As a Texter, in the heart of West
- 42:40Virginia, there exists a profound force that goes beyond the realm of sports,
- 42:44transcending limitations and fostering a sensi belonging. Talking about Special Olympics, a remarkable
- 42:49initiative showcased in the latest episode of West Virginia enriched in collaboration with Huntington,
- 42:53stands as a testament to the power of determination, unity and unwavering support.
- 42:57See of video highlighting the Special Olympics at Facebook dot com slash five ADWCHS Texas.
- 43:02There were candidates at the media putting pressure on the executive committee members to
- 43:07close the primary, namely Chris Warner and Alex Mooney. Now that's from a
- 43:10texture. I did not attend. That's the words of a texture text to
- 43:15day. People should vote for whoever they want anytime Republicans want to control people's
- 43:20lives. Won't be voting Republican anymore, says a texture. All right,

- 45:55my time on the show, which goes back up was four years and if
- 46:00you didn't hear it, go back and listen. Posted on my social media
- 46:01pages Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and The Dave Allen Show and Act. You
- 46:05can also find it on YouTube, but WCHS network pages, et cetera,
- 46:08et cetera. Now, if you thought that was a little off the wall,
- 46:13former Massy CEO Don Blankenship has filed to run for US Senate as a
- 46:16Democrat, which could set up a ballot in a battle, I should say,
- 46:22in the general election between he and Governor Justice. Justice of course currently
- 46:25trouncing Congressman Alex Moody Napolie. So there's that. Former Secretary of State Natalie
- 46:31Tennant is going back into politics as she has entered the race to run for
- 46:37Kanawah County Commission. So, yeah, a lot of interesting things Texas,
- 46:43Dave, I want to know how Putnam County Republican Executive reps voted. How
- 46:45do I find that out? What I'm told? But it was my secret
- 46:49ballot. So unless you know the people and you reach out to them and
- 46:52you ask them themselves. There's really no way of knowing. Again, I
- 46:54wasn't there. That's what I understand. I understand. We have a call.
- 46:58Let's go to the phones. Good morning, and you're on the show.
- 47:00Hey Dave, how are you? How do it fine? How are
- 47:02you? Sir? Good? Listen there that independents are who helped the Republicans
- 47:10eventually take over the House and the Senate. And had it not been for
- 47:17the independent votes in the primaries years ago, they picked up the Republican ballot
- 47:23because we were the only ones they could pick up. So most of those
- 47:28people continued to vote Republicans even though they stayed independent. So once you vote
- 47:35for somebody, you're likely to vote for him again. Okay, So I'm
- 47:43going to read between the lines here, but I'll go ahead and ask you
- 47:45the question. Do you support what the Republican Executive Committee did on Saturday?
- 47:51Absolutely not. I'm a former delegate. My name is Ron Walters, and
- 47:58you know I had over twenty or of service. Had it not been for
- 48:00the independent vote, we would have never taken over the House. Okay,
- 48:06all right, Ron, I appreciate your phone call, but I appreciate your
- 48:08input. Thanks a lot it's five minutes away from ten, So there you
- 48:14go. I'm talking about so many people that file for August. I mentioned
- 48:17that Natalie Tennett, former Secretary of State, has filed to run for Conaw
- 48:20County Commission. Let me just say that's going to be an interesting interview when
- 48:24I do it. Former Delegate to Joshua Higginbotham has filed to run for Agriculture
- 48:30Commission. And doctor Casey Sachs, who was just on the show Friday,
- 48:34doctor Saxonbridge Valley, has filed to run for Knawa County Board of Education.
- 48:38I was unaware of that when I had her on the show Friday, but
- 48:42I'll have her back on again as a candidate to talk about her run for
- 48:46the Ward of Education here in Kanawah County. Let me go back to Don
- 48:50Blankenship for a moment. He will be on this show soon and he's Hoppy's
- 48:55first guest coming up at ten o six this morning on Talk Klinn. Also
- 49:00on the show Matt Harridge, I hope I'm pronouncing that right. Who is
- 49:05the new head of the Republican Party in West Virginia. He will be on
- 49:07the show as well. Dave Island showing five eighty Live is brought to you
- 49:09part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty Birds. May be winter,
- 49:13but we're always thinking about baseball over at Gomart Ballpark. The twenty twenty
- 49:16four Dirty Birds schedule posted at their website that is Dirtybirdsbaseball dot com. Your
- 49:22hometown baseball team is a Charleston dirty Birds. Tech says the interview with Carper
- 49:25was bizarre. Not for you, but for Carper. It was weird,
- 49:30says a Texter text. I heard the Carper interview. King Carper was not
- 49:36thrilled with you. Hey, kind of got that impression. Kind of got
- 49:39that impression myself. The leads story this morning at wv Metronews dot com.
- 49:45A bill that would require eighth graders to watch a video showing insemination and fetal
- 49:51development has been put on hold for now. Rat mclhenny has the story posted
- 49:54on the website. It looked like the bill would be on track for passing,
- 49:59but on one Friday, senators referred to the bill's sp four to sixty
- 50:05eight to the Rules Committee, which can be where some bills go to die.
- 50:07I don't know yet. There is a section of the bill that would
- 50:12require eighth grade students to watch the video, the so called Baby Olivia Act.
- 50:17It is produced by the group known as Live Action, which is a
- 50:20nonprofit group that has been active and anti abortion campaigns. You can read all
- 50:25about the film and watch the clip at wv metronews dot com Texas. The
- 50:30Putnam County chairman was against closing the primary in twenty twenty four. Not sure
- 50:36how the other Putnam members voted, says a textra that was in reference to
- 50:40somebody asking how the Putnam County Executive Committee voted on the vote of the Executive
- 50:45Committee to close the primaries on Saturday. The Library Bill, the legislation to
- 50:52open up libraries for felony prosecution if miners gained access to so called obscene materials,
- 50:58has also been parked or should I say it's not hit the committee agenda
- 51:02yet it's house built forty six fifty four story by Brad posted at w metronews
- 51:07dot com. There was a public hearing about it last Wednesday, and by
- 51:12the way, I'm still getting over hearing that in some of the language we
- 51:15heard on the floor. It was on the agenda in Judiciary on the nineteenth
- 51:22of January but it's put on hold due to a snowstorm that day, if
- 51:24you remember, it was parked again due to the public hearing it. So
- 51:29has it come in front of a committee. The Library Association of West Virginia
- 51:31has been one of the groups speaking out against the bill. I mean,
- 51:36and I said this on the show last week. I mean, I get
- 51:38it. No one wants their kids to have access to porn, but are
- 51:44they really going to the library to get it when they can see unlimited smut
- 51:50on their phones and devices already, you know, the ones that parents usually
- 51:53use as a babysitter for their kids. We want to look at that stuff.
- 51:58When I was growing up, we had to work hard to get it.
- 52:00Now, apparently, according to some legislators, it's a problem in the
- 52:04libraries, which I'm not so sure that it is. Textays your Dave,
- 52:08your voice kind of trembles whenever you interview. Can't Carper says a texture.
- 52:13As a Republican says the text, I have to ask whose stupid idea was
- 52:16it? Basically tell independence who support we need to go pound sand. It
- 52:20should only be a short amount of time before you turn Westreet into back to
- 52:22blue. That we thought so hard to get away from after eighty disasterrous year,
- 52:25GOP screws itself every time according to a texture. All right, gotta
- 52:30go. Tomorrow Restaurant Week kicks off in Charleston. We'll talk about that a
- 52:34little bit, plus some real estate with Rich the Realtory coming up tomorrow,
- 52:37Hoppy coming up DoD blaken Ship at ten oh six. I will see you
- 52:39tomorrow till then, have fun. I love somebody. Fighthsam ninety six point
