- 0:21membership options there. This is a trailer for hamster
- 0:25extra which is existing contributors fans that are
- 0:28talking about different It shows other than dokdo choosing five
- 0:32episodes and yeah doing commentaries on those episodes.
- 0:37So first of all, we will briefly here from frasor Gregory talking
- 0:42about the five red dwarf episodes that he is going to
- 0:45discuss. Enjoy.
- 0:48And have you ever actually had a triple fried egg sandwich with
- 0:51chili sauce and Chutney? I feel like I'm having a baby
- 0:57you can talk about the show, not long.
- 1:00My ID card is high anyway yes, I'll wait, I'll give you my
- 1:05five, picks them gone. Ever since we've been talking
- 1:09all about swords, I'll give you the five that I have picked,
- 1:12which I'm going to say now will probably change but it's really
- 1:16difficult just to get. Five is the first thing I need
- 1:18to say because let's say everything was taught about you,
- 1:22but could do those episodes and, you know, talked and talked top
- 1:25because the saw so good, it was really difficult to not just
- 1:29Pick all of series for because again, absolutely fantastic.
- 1:34But what I'm going to pick is I want to pick terraformed from
- 1:38Series 5 because like I said, that was, that was one of the
- 1:42ones that really got me into it. And it's just every scene is
- 1:47just a banger in that thing in front of my concept.
- 1:51That's yeah, study. That's a good one.
- 1:55I'm going to talk about the end. Which is the very first one
- 2:00because I think that though the series one is it's very raw and
- 2:06rough and finding its feet. You know, even in that episode,
- 2:09you can see the beginnings of. If really, some really special
- 2:14praise, I'll be. I've been eating the crew.
- 2:19You trying to tell me everybody's dead.
- 2:22Everybody is dead. Dave and queeg.
- 2:26We're gonna go with Big golden because again, it's just, you
- 2:32know, you've got a lot of Mi Nam.
- 2:34Love it. That's, that's a really strong
- 2:37episode for him. And I'm going to go with
- 2:39polymorph. The secrets of the box of shells
- 2:43but you are you sure? Oh, yes.
- 2:48Betty, spaghetti. Honestly, your have anything
- 2:52would you list up again? Just Just so many good Concepts
- 2:59and you know, the give the Casimir new to do with their
- 3:04characters which is which is fantastic.
- 3:06And the last one is going to be probably my favorite all-time
- 3:10episode of Red Dwarf ever. So, what is it?
- 3:17It's a white hole that you're favoring.
- 3:23Yeah, again it's just Again, it's one where every scene is
- 3:29just full of laughs and you're full of great ideas.
- 3:32I mean, paying playing pool with planets.
- 3:34Oh, hi guys is brilliant. It's just, you know, and you've
- 3:39got everything leading up to that of sort of like Holly and
- 3:42talk is toaster coming in. Yes, just general.
- 3:47Are you all the time? I go, was it given that the
- 3:50universe is also infinite? Would you like a Dusty cheese
- 3:54waffle? I'm just ready.
- 3:59It's a bit currently as well those are absolutely brilliant.
- 4:05Brilliant choices I will obviously go into why you chose
- 4:08her nose in a lot more depth when we do the commentaries.
- 4:12And next up we have the wonderful life and possibly from
- 4:16flight for entirety skill and talk to podcast.
- 4:19So you might have heard of discussing the five episodes of
- 4:23press gang that he wants to talk about the Steven Moffat
- 4:27children's comedy drama, enjoy well then why don't you tell
- 4:34everybody? Then the five episodes that
- 4:37we're going to be doing college. So because you said to me you
- 4:40don't necessarily think these are all the best episodes.
- 4:43So now I want to hear your reasons for choosing them Okay,
- 4:48so I so a night in. So we're going to watch series
- 4:53one. Like I said, one from each
- 4:54Series. So we're going to watch series
- 4:561, episode 5 and 19. I don't think that's the best
- 5:00episode of the season. I think probably the second last
- 5:03episode of the Season Monday, Tuesday is the best because
- 5:08something happens on Monday night and we see things
- 5:11happening on Monday, leading up to the thing that happens on
- 5:14Monday night. And then things happening on
- 5:16Tuesday. The resultant as a result of it
- 5:21and you've got spike in their deforming The Narrative as well,
- 5:24by introducing a be plotting to the discussions and stuff.
- 5:27You just delicious. If you describe that to me, I
- 5:29oughta just said, Steven Moffat straightaway.
- 5:32Yeah, it's very Moffat e and it's like his 11th, you know,
- 5:37the eleventh episode of TV that he's written that airs.
- 5:40So a 19 is is kind of a little bit business as usual.
- 5:44It's a little bit is a little bit.
- 5:47Current. I mean we're having we're going
- 5:48to watch another one whether in The Newsroom at night and
- 5:52there's Series 2 opens with an episode called breakfast at
- 5:56czar's, which is also them working all night in The
- 5:58Newsroom. And but this is this allows us
- 6:01to concentrate on the main characters.
- 6:03So we've just got the main characters in in The Newsroom.
- 6:07Everyone else is not there and we just get to see that into
- 6:12play and I think we start to see a relationship forming between
- 6:17spy. Bike and Linda we see.
- 6:22Yeah, I think it's where we kind of get to know people.
- 6:25We get to see what Collins like. It is just a sort of business as
- 6:28usual episode and I thought that that was a good start.
- 6:31I think it's properly funny. You know it's clever it's sort
- 6:34of a bit unexpected. I enjoyed a lot.
- 6:37That's why we doing that one. But I mean, there are other real
- 6:43really stunning ones, and I do think that that ends with the
- 6:46Monday Tuesday and then the final episode of the series
- 6:50shouldn't I be taller? Is it like a two-part thing
- 6:54which kind of rounds the series off and gives Linder a crisis of
- 6:58confidence? Which she then overcomes, and
- 7:03And I think that that's some pretty strong writing as well.
- 7:08Series 2, so series to so series to we are doing an episode
- 7:15called gosh, there are some good ones here.
- 7:18We're doing the last episode so it's called the big finish and
- 7:23it's episode 13 and ye tile before somewhere, you know?
- 7:28Yeah. I I think that, that, that big
- 7:32finish is named after. Oh, absolutely slow.
- 7:35They cheer makes it. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:38So so eats again, sort of part 2 of 2 parter and part. 1, episode
- 7:4512 is about Kenny. It's called Rock Solid and it's
- 7:48got a double meaning because it turns out, he's, you know, he
- 7:51can sing and play guitar. But it's also about Kenny's role
- 7:55kind of keeping everything together and dealing with the
- 7:59people Linda is horrible to and dealing with leaner and stuff
- 8:02and it's really strong and it introduces some of the themes
- 8:05that come up in the big finish. But the big finish is the sort
- 8:09of costs of the show. So it's their last day of school
- 8:13and eat, is the day that the decision is being made, whether
- 8:19they're going to be allowed to take over the junior Gazette, as
- 8:24the As and do it properly for money, you know, cut the Apron
- 8:29Strings to the parent paper and actually just run it as a proper
- 8:32newspaper as adults with them in charge, or whether it's going to
- 8:36be given to another group of kids.
- 8:38So that they can do the same thing that they did the previous
- 8:41year. And again it it's Linda waiting
- 8:45for the phone call and then into cutting between that and the
- 8:51events of the day that have led up to the phone call.
- 8:53And it ends with Spike and Linda way it is way up there.
- 8:57The phone rings phone rings, it could be spikes.
- 9:01Father, it could be matka the newspaper.
- 9:05What does Linda say? It's time to grow up or so.
- 9:08I think it's time, yeah. Or for one of us are grow up and
- 9:12then of course, it just ends with her saying hello jr.
- 9:16Gazette. As you answer the phone, it goes
- 9:18to Black at the series ended there, where it potentially may
- 9:21have, because it was facing cancellation, that would have
- 9:24been the perfect ending that your Sunday and there's a
- 9:28lovely, this like a crane shot as the phone rings.
- 9:31I just like, yeah, yeah, we seriously good.
- 9:35Yeah, and it's that phone, which has been so important.
- 9:38Portent. They steal the phone you know
- 9:40they run a cable into the parent.
- 9:43Yeah. And they're stealing the phone
- 9:46and then they eventually get given it.
- 9:48But it's the one phone as well which is then light on the wall
- 9:53of The Newsroom framed for series for Series 3 to 5 when
- 9:58they have proper phone systems. What about are truncated Series
- 10:023 then. Okay, so series 3, Starts with
- 10:10like starts with Spike returning.
- 10:13So what we discover is that in series that in between the two
- 10:20series, Spike has decided to go back to America, which was the
- 10:23decision that he faced in the big finish because Spike and
- 10:28Linda have a relationship during series to during a few episodes.
- 10:32But then it stops and it stopped in episode 11.
- 10:38And so the big finish has him saying you know I love you and
- 10:42her refusing to say it until she says will be S, of course.
- 10:45I love you. I you know I don't know what to
- 10:49do with that. All right you guys was it off
- 10:51course. I love you.
- 10:52Yeah. But I have to run a newspaper
- 10:55like I don't know what to do, you know?
- 10:57And it is that sort of cusp of adulthood thing.
- 10:59So, he goes off. He turns up in series 3 and at
- 11:06the end of a really sort of ridiculous comedy.
- 11:08Beside which has lots of telephones and stuff in it.
- 11:11She you know the camera tracks down and we discover that she's
- 11:14stolen spikes passport. And so this is season 3 episode
- 11:182 which we're going to watch killer on the line is another
- 11:21night in The Newsroom with just a few people.
- 11:24Sarah's been dumped by her boyfriend.
- 11:27Spike is ransacking the place trying to find.
- 11:30He's he's passport, it's actually like just a few hours
- 11:36after episode 1. One.
- 11:38It's on the same day. It's playable, what's wrong?
- 11:41There's there's our tent. I saw very little comedy in that
- 11:45episode. I thought it was well traumatic,
- 11:48but there's lots of sort of, like, I think Linda Linda is
- 11:52funny in this episode as a cell, but great at the beginning,
- 11:56where spy walks in and he goes, oh, don't ask and then he looks
- 11:59around The Newsroom and someone's lying on the floor and
- 12:02he goes, well, don't ask then. Yeah, yeah, it's just terrific.
- 12:06So I think it is funny. I think it does have The lines,
- 12:08but it's another one of moffatt's.
- 12:10It's another telephone Century episode that and yeah, yeah,
- 12:15yeah, I thought the ending was really, really properly.
- 12:17Good. And we'll talk about it when we
- 12:18do it, but it is one of those things where there's phone call
- 12:23things. Like someone calls The News Room
- 12:26by mistake and it turns out during the course of the episode
- 12:30that they're committing a crime that they've that they've
- 12:35assaulted someone in a shop. In order to Steal the till but
- 12:39they've been maced and so they can't escape a shop.
- 12:42And so they're calling. They think they're calling
- 12:44someone else but they're calling The Newsroom and, and Sarah
- 12:48manages to solve that crime of during the course of the
- 12:51episode. It's good.
- 12:53But are immature. Yeah, yeah and it, you know,
- 12:56like it's the sort of thing he loved end up doing Sherlock,
- 12:59where someone does deductions about how things work and the
- 13:02whole thing hinges on phones. Obviously, why did you have to
- 13:05bring up Sherlock honestly? Yeah.
- 13:08You know, like that is the sort of thing where he has he wants
- 13:11smart characters. It Sarah is the smartest
- 13:13character like the smartest person and so she's able to come
- 13:17to the relevant conclusion. So I think that I think that
- 13:21does exemplify what I was saying earlier about when he's given a
- 13:23lot of time and though Sherlock episodes like two hours long,
- 13:27very long and now our pretty agonizing, they are clever but
- 13:32some of the majority is aren't so they look pretty great.
- 13:36But yeah, this Has nice and tight. 25 minutes is exactly our
- 13:41say, the series 4 episode that you chose which I watch last
- 13:44night in bed and was trying desperately hard not to laugh
- 13:49because my other office next to me.
- 13:51Oh my God. It was amazingly good.
- 13:53It was so funny. So it's Spike, comes back so
- 13:57Spike and we get this explained to us in the episode and we'll
- 14:00talk about it then. But that whole Arc in series 3
- 14:04about Spike coming back with his What Linda concludes is his
- 14:11fiancee and then the way that Linda ends that relationship in
- 14:18such a spectacularly. Funny moment, it's in the last
- 14:21moment, the last scene of the episode, we see that she's
- 14:25ruined their relationship. It's just a perfect thing.
- 14:27And he comes back and the two of them meet Kind of unexpectedly
- 14:34in their sort of. I thought that was one of the
- 14:40sharpest things that we'll never really know I've seen.
- 14:42It's so funny. The dial is just so good and she
- 14:47and you could never been more about Sourpuss with a.
- 14:49Yeah bar but boy, she's happy with it.
- 14:53Yeah yeah. And she's also getting over like
- 14:55Kenny's departure in between Seasons as well and so she's
- 14:59just being extra horrible to everyone but we don't actually
- 15:02see that like That's one of the things too.
- 15:04We do get to see her, be horrible to people.
- 15:07But the way that she's talked about, you know, you use the way
- 15:10that she's talked about to make her seem even worse.
- 15:13So we never get to see anything that is, you know, truly, truly
- 15:17awful, but she's clearly been horrible to everyone fabulous
- 15:22bit, where she's called out on how horrible she is.
- 15:25That is forced to apologize. I was punching the air, I
- 15:28thought. Yeah.
- 15:29So it's the return of Lucy Benjamin as well, which is the
- 15:31other thing that's happening. Sassy And shit.
- 15:34And I was loved and episode 1 of a new show as well like a like a
- 15:38new episode one. You know, like I've said before
- 15:41on Ft and on title start row project but I love a series 2
- 15:45episode 1 and in this is series 4 episode 1, but he's clearly,
- 15:50let's see, it's retooling. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:54What about season? Five of them so I've chosen
- 15:58season 5 episode 1 which I don't think is the strongest episode.
- 16:03Load. And I think.
- 16:07Series 6, AB series series 5 episode 6.
- 16:12I think he's a strong ending but I think it does tip over the
- 16:18border into being a bit unpleasant.
- 16:22And I also think because it it also features the kid who kills
- 16:30himself the end of Monday Tuesday as well.
- 16:33So and it's called, there are crocodiles in it very, very
- 16:36difficult. Italy kind of leans into the
- 16:40idea that Linda is a terrible person.
- 16:44And so I thought we would do Series 5 episode 1 instead which
- 16:49isn't the strongest episode of the season.
- 16:51But it is very much about her being a bad person and her using
- 16:58her sort of monomania her obsession with doing the job of
- 17:02a newspaper person and doing it. Well, blinding her.
- 17:07The fact that she's she's causing damage in someone's life
- 17:13and it's also the episode where we kind of kind of decide that
- 17:18just spiked a Linda and together and the two of them disagree
- 17:22about what she's done, but they do it in a way that doesn't
- 17:27wreck their relationship or anything.
- 17:29I think it's quite like, I'd like the portrayal of the spike
- 17:32Linda relationship, where it's just a settled thing and it
- 17:36features David. Links?
- 17:37Who he's in serious, one and two.
- 17:41I don't exactly know how often, but he plays the Headmaster of
- 17:44the school and so we get to see him again there.
- 17:48So I think that that's again that's a little bit of a
- 17:50procedural episode but it does have a central kind of moral
- 17:53question, which I think is makes it worth looking at.
- 17:58Next up we have the Glorious Simon, heart long-serving,
- 18:02hamster, contributor practically co-host nowadays and Talking
- 18:07about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and why that is six
- 18:11episodes long. They have to choose five
- 18:13episodes would have been a bit mean but we discuss that here
- 18:17and just why you love the show so much.
- 18:20Yeah. Enjoy.
- 18:22I barely made with lalla Ward, you know.
- 18:24Yeah, absolutely. When that's, that's bad.
- 18:26She'll never let us forget, that was quite right, too.
- 18:30If you had Douglas Adams, as your best mate, you would never
- 18:32let anyone forget that it's true.
- 18:35Oh, I don't begrudge you. I love a lot of work.
- 18:37Me too well, looks like I don't have to ask you the question,
- 18:42which five episodes would you like to do commentaries on?
- 18:45Because as you have already said, there are only six
- 18:47episodes but I'm going to ask you this.
- 18:51Are you have a favorite installment of this.
- 18:57It's very hard to beat the first one.
- 18:59The first one is magnificent and clever, and does everything.
- 19:04And, and again, and it's full of wonderful lines, like, the ships
- 19:11that hung in the air, exactly, the way that bricks don't and
- 19:14things. Like I think the first episode
- 19:16is absolutely tremendous. All right.
- 19:19Yeah, I think that what's really inside with deep for its that
- 19:22threads episode 3 and then 5 That was really great as well.
- 19:26Yes. Only, because they do this
- 19:28elaborate ten-minute sequence all for that joke. 42 know.
- 19:34It's episode 4. Isn't it with that one?
- 19:36That's last. Yeah, for yeah.
- 19:40Well, I'll say this to you. I'm salivating to get going with
- 19:44this off it. We are called wait.
- 19:46I'm finally on this trailer, you have me.
- 19:52I've chosen show show myself which wasn't dr.
- 19:55Related. And that was the X-Files.
- 19:58And here's me, desperately trying to pin down five episodes
- 20:02of The X-Files to talk about. A squat challenge.
- 20:07Yeah, okay then so we know what type of story you like.
- 20:14We heard that there is five the five.
- 20:18We've got to conspiracy ones and three Monsters of the week.
- 20:21So drum roll, please order Baba. Okay.
- 20:25So my first episode is Duane Barry from season two.
- 20:30It's probably the tightest hostage drama I've ever seen.
- 20:35It's really it's really Written and directed by Chris Carter.
- 20:38And I wanted one the he was heavily involved in.
- 20:41He's utterly unpredictable. Yeah, he's either going to
- 20:44produce something Incredible or something shocking.
- 20:49And and there's rarely anything in between this is incredible.
- 20:54And I also wanted an episode that showcase David Duchovny.
- 20:56And this is where scully's out the action and he's terrific in
- 21:00it. The second conspiracy.
- 21:03One is a two-parter. Sorry.
- 21:06Series, a is Essence and existence at the end of series.
- 21:09A, it's a massive movie of the week to part of either love is
- 21:14block is full of action. So one where Scully has a baby,
- 21:17but most importantly, It's the episode that showcases that
- 21:21Ensemble. Yeah, at their best.
- 21:24Robert Patrick is brilliant. In it, he gets a replay.
- 21:27All the Terminator 2 seen us. He's the victim this time, and
- 21:32the super soldiers after him. Yeah, excellent.
- 21:35Look, what about them? My third one is bad blood from
- 21:39the series 5, which is a is written by Vince Gilligan, who
- 21:44went on to ride the grief, why is that show hero?
- 21:47The fellow, who grows the the drugs, everyone loved it, Rick
- 21:53and Bud. Thank you very much.
- 21:55That one. That was the show that really
- 21:56made it but this was his first work in television and is
- 21:59X-Files episodes are brilliant. And I wanted to do one that was
- 22:02a bit subversive and this is an episode is a comedy episode.
- 22:06We're Half it's told from oldest point of view, Half is told from
- 22:09scully's point of view and you get to see how they actually see
- 22:13each other because Duchovny and and some play, those two halves,
- 22:17as the other characters, he's clever, it's genius.
- 22:21And finally, I wanted a Darin Morgan episode, he wrote five
- 22:27five episodes, 6 episodes all comedies they're held up as the
- 22:32best of the show. I've chosen for a pretty
- 22:35controversial. Ali, the Lost Art of forehead
- 22:38sweat, which is from the very last season, and I chose it
- 22:42because I the Lost Art of forehead sweat.
- 22:46That's what it's called, okay? It's from the last season's from
- 22:50season 11, I wanted to choose something from the Revival.
- 22:53I wanted a Darin Morgan episode and it is smart and funny.
- 22:57It's all about memory and sort of how you remember things as a
- 23:03child yet. So how they actually are now and
- 23:05it has very A very profound things to say about that.
- 23:09It's brilliant. That's my fave.
- 23:12And as well as all that, there is a host of hamster.
- 23:15Contributors coming in with other shows as well, they're
- 23:19fabulous. Steven, Alexander will be
- 23:20talking about Mad Men, Mark. Dodik will be talking about
- 23:24Blake 7 Toby hey toke, will be talking about quite a mess on
- 23:28the pit. Gary Russell is brave enough to
- 23:31talk about the tomorrow people and much much more There's 14
- 23:37computers signed up now. So there will be a host of extra
- 23:40episodes as well as that there are Advanced episodes coming
- 23:44out. The Impossible Planet.
- 23:46That's a to a and episode. One of the Romans is already
