- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:50Podcast, and we are live at the 2024
- 0:52payer issues roundtable.
- 0:54I'm currently joined by Pankari Sharma, who is
- 0:57the strategy and operations leader at Humana. So
- 1:00thank you for being here today. We'd love
- 1:01to start our conversation by having you introduce
- 1:03yourself and tell us a little bit more
- 1:05about your role.
- 1:07Thanks, Grace. Happy to be here
- 1:10and, talking to you. I'm Pankari Sharma. I'm,
- 1:13like you said, the strategy and operations leader
- 1:15in Humana in their clinical strategy team.
- 1:19What my work scope includes is
- 1:22improving the health outcomes for our members
- 1:25through different initiatives, and that consequently also reduces
- 1:29our total cost of care. So broad initiatives
- 1:32under that umbrella.
- 1:34Well, thank you for being here. And let's
- 1:35start our conversation today surrounding growth goals. So
- 1:39from improving member experience
- 1:41and expanding value based care to controlling costs,
- 1:44payer executives have ambitious growth goals for the
- 1:47rest of this year and looking ahead into
- 1:492025.
- 1:50In your role, what is your top priority,
- 1:53and how are you planning to get there?
- 1:55Sure.
- 1:56So I would say, my priority is would,
- 1:59again, fit under that very broad umbrella of
- 2:01improving the member
- 2:03outcomes as well as,
- 2:05thinking through how to enhance member experience while
- 2:08doing so as well.
- 2:10The 2 initiatives that are on top of
- 2:12my mind this year and would be early
- 2:14next year are, firstly,
- 2:16addressing the gaps in care for our members
- 2:18so that they can proactively
- 2:21be in charge of their health more, are
- 2:23able to
- 2:24have better access to the providers,
- 2:27to the services that would help them not
- 2:29worsen their chronic conditions.
- 2:31So that is one thing that's on top
- 2:33of my mind.
- 2:34And the second thing is,
- 2:37providing
- 2:39better and more holistic population
- 2:41health services to our, members and especially
- 2:44the more vulnerable population.
- 2:48And going along with that, at an industry
- 2:50level, how would you describe the biggest barriers
- 2:52to effectively
- 2:54serving and engaging members? And what opportunities do
- 2:57you see for large scale improvements? And how
- 2:59are you applying this in your current strategy?
- 3:02Yeah. I think the
- 3:05largest barrier that I see personally is the
- 3:08adoption of preventative care and especially when it
- 3:11comes to members and their mindsets.
- 3:14So I think as an industry, we all
- 3:16have, and by we, I mean, all the
- 3:18stakeholders, including payers and providers. We understand the
- 3:21value of preventative care
- 3:23in ensuring positive outcomes
- 3:26in a proactive manner.
- 3:28But, ensuring that members get that and they
- 3:32do not have reactive,
- 3:33but proactive mindset
- 3:35to getting,
- 3:37preventative care. And we as stakeholders can facilitate
- 3:40that. So,
- 3:42ensuring that in terms of affordability,
- 3:44accessibility to providers, availability
- 3:47of providers,
- 3:48and, just building their trust in the health
- 3:51care industry overall so that they reach out
- 3:54to us as well when they need such
- 3:57help. I think that is one of the
- 4:00barriers or something that we should be working
- 4:02to improve upon.
- 4:04And shifting gears slightly toward leadership growth, keeping
- 4:08pace in today's dynamic health care landscape is
- 4:11challenging. So what is a piece of advice
- 4:13you'd like to share for peer leaders to
- 4:15help grow their businesses while keeping members top
- 4:17of mind?
- 4:19Sure. I just had a panel on, harnessing
- 4:22AI and, dig digital health outcomes for improving
- 4:26member
- 4:27health outcome plan. And I would probably I
- 4:29would just repeat the answer that I gave
- 4:31there, which
- 4:33was interoperability,
- 4:35in terms of,
- 4:36data is something
- 4:38I feel would not only help our members
- 4:41and our outreach to them, which would be
- 4:42more targeted, more timely, more customized to their
- 4:45needs,
- 4:46but also having that kind of interoperability
- 4:49would help peers
- 4:51and providers make our back end processes more
- 4:55efficient.
- 4:56So I think that's a a bedrock for
- 4:59a lot of improvement
- 5:00in terms of how we,
- 5:02do decision making as well as implement our
- 5:04decisions.
- 5:06And as we wrap our conversation up, are
- 5:09there any closing remarks you'd like to share
- 5:11on the podcast
- 5:12today? It was great to be the part
- 5:14of this conference.
- 5:15It's it was great to see how
- 5:18different organizations and stakeholders have same things on
- 5:21mind. I think,
- 5:23AI was one,
- 5:25element that we all are thinking about. We
- 5:27are making our efforts from our end, but
- 5:29also
- 5:30looking at the regulatory
- 5:33organizations as well. Got it. And,
- 5:35I'm leaving this conference very optimistic that in
- 5:38a couple of years, we would be way
- 5:40ahead of where we are right now.
- 5:43Wonderful. Well, thank you for taking the time
- 5:45to be here. Again, we are live at
- 5:47the 2024
- 5:48Payer Issues Roundtable.
- 5:50Thank you for having me.
