- 0:00Speaker 1: Jalen Hurt, despite immense success, is facing some frustrations now
- 0:03Speaker 1: within his own building. Mainly, sources point to an issue
- 0:07Speaker 1: with coachability that even in twenty twenty four when they
- 0:09Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl, coaches trying to implement new schemes,
- 0:13Speaker 1: motions and shifts, maybe more things under center hursus pushed
- 0:16Speaker 1: back to those at times. They feel like changes within
- 0:19Speaker 1: the huddle to play calls have been excessive at times,
- 0:22Speaker 1: even you know, giving signals to receivers with you know, hands, stables,
- 0:26Speaker 1: a change of play that weren't installed in the offense.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So those are things that have just sort of come
- 0:31Speaker 1: to a head. Despite all the winning that they've done,
- 0:33Speaker 1: the passing attack has not diversified in recent years.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Well, we all have seen that football and four powered
- 0:39Speaker 2: by the Inside of the Birds podcast and of course
- 0:41Speaker 2: Jeff Mooscher is here today. It's brought by Ocean Casino Resort.
- 0:45Speaker 2: We will be there for this year's draft party, and
- 0:48Speaker 2: of course you could be there as well. We'll do
- 0:51Speaker 2: our qualifiers next hour. We just had two more qualifiers
- 0:54Speaker 2: who just got in to win tickets to go see
- 0:57Speaker 2: the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. By the way, Phillies
- 1:00Speaker 2: down five to three. Bryce Harper's up with two on
- 1:02Speaker 2: in the ninth and he just popped up to shortstop. Ah,
- 1:06Speaker 2: that's a bummer. Schwarber is on and so is a Turner.
- 1:12Speaker 2: So there's two outs in the ninth. Harper did homer
- 1:15Speaker 2: in his last at bat to make it five to three.
- 1:17Speaker 2: They're down five to three. They're down to their final out.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But things never seem to be quiet around the Eagles,
- 1:24Speaker 2: And it seems like every couple of years there's one
- 1:26Speaker 2: of these quarterback stories that come out. And this one's interesting. Jeff,
- 1:29Speaker 2: let's kind of set the stage here. This was not
- 1:32Speaker 2: supposed to be a Jalen Hurts article. This was more just, hey,
- 1:36Speaker 2: what happened to the offense? And it seemed a lot
- 1:40Speaker 2: of the sourcing and reporting started to go down the
- 1:43Speaker 2: road of the quarterback. Is that how you kind of
- 1:47Speaker 2: read this piece that a lot of people in this
- 1:49Speaker 2: building are saying, what's wrong with the offense? Well, you
- 1:52Speaker 2: got this, this and this, and as Fowler kind of mentioned,
- 1:55Speaker 2: Jalen Hurt's name just kept coming up a lot.
- 1:59Speaker 3: So I didn't realize that when I read the story.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I think that's something Jeremy might have said on ESPN
- 2:05Speaker 4: that it didn't start out that way.
- 2:07Speaker 2: He said that the reason they wrote the article was
- 2:09Speaker 2: not for where it went to. The article was supposed
- 2:12Speaker 2: to be about the struggles of the twenty twenty five
- 2:15Speaker 2: offense that had all this talent but didn't really do
- 2:18Speaker 2: what you thought, and that when he started to get
- 2:21Speaker 2: sourcing dozens of sources, this is how the story ended up.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Well, let me ask you just a really basic football question. Sure,
- 2:29Speaker 4: take the Eagles out of it. If you're going to
- 2:31Speaker 4: write a story about a team's struggle on offense, what
- 2:35Speaker 4: are the odds that the quarterback is not going to
- 2:38Speaker 4: be at the center of that story.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So, I mean, in.
- 2:41Speaker 4: All fairness, and I love Jeremy, I don't think he's
- 2:43Speaker 4: trying to backpedal. I think I'm sure he was looking
- 2:46Speaker 4: to write something him and Tim about the Eagles offense
- 2:49Speaker 4: with all that money involved, and how it.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Could have evolved to what it did.
- 2:53Speaker 4: But I mean, you can't be surprised that it came
- 2:55Speaker 4: back that a big part of it is about the quarterback,
- 2:57Speaker 4: because that's how offense works in the NFL.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You're right about that, You're definitely right about that. But
- 3:03Speaker 2: obviously This was layers and layers and layers of different things,
- 3:06Speaker 2: tense moments between him and Kellen Moore in twenty twenty four.
- 3:09Speaker 2: When I want to start there, because to me this
- 3:12Speaker 2: sets up everything is that More coaches them hard, there's
- 3:15Speaker 2: tense moments, and he got the most out of them
- 3:18Speaker 2: a championship. Then there's some reporting that he had too
- 3:22Speaker 2: many yes men around him. Well, More's out of the building,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and now maybe the offensive coordinator and the others don't
- 3:29Speaker 2: hold him as accountable for changing the play, going off script,
- 3:33Speaker 2: calling his own plays that aren't even installed in the offense.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you know.
- 3:39Speaker 4: So let me first say this, I really give a
- 3:41Speaker 4: lot of credit to the work that both Tim mcmanuson
- 3:45Speaker 4: Jeremy Feller did because when I read the story, what
- 3:48Speaker 4: jumped out to me right off the bat was how
- 3:51Speaker 4: balanced it was Mike, and how a lot of times
- 3:55Speaker 4: reporters write stories with anonymous sourcing, and I don't know
- 3:59Speaker 4: if they do this intrinsically or just subconsciously, but they
- 4:03Speaker 4: sort of You can tell that they either took a
- 4:06Speaker 4: side or they presented more than one, like one side
- 4:09Speaker 4: more than the other. And I think the beauty of
- 4:12Speaker 4: the ESPN story that came out between Tim and Jeremy
- 4:16Speaker 4: is that there's actually contrasting points made in that story.
- 4:20Speaker 4: There are points that Jalen Hurts is uncoachable, does it
- 4:25Speaker 4: his way, wants it to look a certain way, is
- 4:27Speaker 4: unapologic about it. And then there are also quotes and
- 4:31Speaker 4: sources who say he is more open than ever to changing,
- 4:34Speaker 4: to being adaptable. So I give them both credit for
- 4:37Speaker 4: really balancing you. That's not a hit piece. If anybody
- 4:40Speaker 4: thinks that's a hit piece on Jalen Hurts, they don't
- 4:42Speaker 4: know what a real hit piece is, and it's like
- 4:44Speaker 4: they've forgotten what journalism is supposed to be. That is
- 4:48Speaker 4: a very balanced story with a lot of a lot
- 4:51Speaker 4: of sources, yes.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And sources that don't always agree.
- 4:54Speaker 4: And I think that that's the point you're left with, Mike,
- 4:57Speaker 4: is that if you're rational enough to under stand that
- 5:00Speaker 4: there are two things can be true at the same time,
- 5:04Speaker 4: and that several people can look at the situation and
- 5:07Speaker 4: find different either culprits or different people responsible, different people
- 5:13Speaker 4: to praise, different people to discredit. You get that, and
- 5:16Speaker 4: that that's really what the story is. That's what life is.
- 5:20Speaker 4: You know, not everybody a Greg CoA Stal likes to
- 5:21Speaker 4: say in scouting when he breaks down tape, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 4: reasonable people can disagree. Sometimes two people will watch tape
- 5:29Speaker 4: of a player and come away with a different opinion
- 5:31Speaker 4: and say, well, that possible, right.
- 5:33Speaker 3: So I think what it really just goes to show.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Though, is if you're among the people, if you're a
- 5:40Speaker 4: consumer of football, if you're a fan of the Eagles,
- 5:42Speaker 4: and you've got some semblance of common sense about you,
- 5:47Speaker 4: you know that the quarterback in terms of this story,
- 5:50Speaker 4: has some flaws and has some that we've talked about,
- 5:53Speaker 4: has some things that he's got to improve, and you
- 5:57Speaker 4: come away hoping that or at least given the glimmer
- 5:59Speaker 4: that maybe he recognizes that and will improve upon it.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Well, all right, so let's break down a couple things here.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The word uncoachable is not a great word to use
- 6:07Speaker 2: when talking about somebody, especially like Hershie was a coach
- 6:10Speaker 2: OF's son, and we've heard how coachable, you know, supposedly
- 6:14Speaker 2: he is.
- 6:15Speaker 5: When you hear sources.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Say that he's uncoachable, is this a case of him
- 6:20Speaker 2: being stubborn or someone who doesn't trust the scheme he's
- 6:24Speaker 2: being asked to run?
- 6:26Speaker 4: Well, let me let me just talk about what Adam
- 6:28Speaker 4: and I have reported a couple of different times and
- 6:30Speaker 4: talked about on Inside the Birds, and I got a
- 6:32Speaker 4: nice A person reached out to me today. It was
- 6:34Speaker 4: a long time Inside the Birds listener and had read
- 6:38Speaker 4: the story, and this person's remark to me, and I'm
- 6:41Speaker 4: not trying to steal from Timid that Tim and Jeremy
- 6:43Speaker 4: took it to another level.
- 6:44Speaker 3: They did a great job.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But this person reached out to me and said that
- 6:48Speaker 4: they felt that they already knew a lot about what
- 6:51Speaker 4: has come out because of Inside the Birds and what
- 6:53Speaker 4: Adam and I.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Have talked about.
- 6:54Speaker 4: So I'll just feel comfortable saying, like we have discussed that,
- 7:00Speaker 4: two things about Jalen is he tends to be you know,
- 7:03Speaker 4: and this won't surprise people.
- 7:04Speaker 3: He's just got a little like an introverted.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Sense about him where he obviously has the utmost confidence
- 7:11Speaker 4: in himself to the point where he has this lives
- 7:15Speaker 4: life by this chip, by these mantras, by these one
- 7:17Speaker 4: liners that we call Sabanism's right and he's very stoic
- 7:22Speaker 4: in that regard, and that has also made him a
- 7:24Speaker 4: little bit difficult. As we've heard and talked about for
- 7:27Speaker 4: his teammates to relate to. He's not like a kind
- 7:30Speaker 4: of like let's have a conversation at the bar type
- 7:32Speaker 4: of guy.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, is the way we get it, you know.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I also I've been opined that he seems very unrelatable.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Correct, right, and then signing that big contract, winning the
- 7:43Speaker 4: Super Bowl, becoming MVP, lighting up the cigar allah Michael
- 7:47Speaker 4: Jordan style, right.
- 7:48Speaker 3: You know that.
- 7:48Speaker 4: I think Derek Gunn kind of talked about that during
- 7:51Speaker 4: the season when some things came out, just how he
- 7:53Speaker 4: perceives himself and wants to be perceived. Well, that goes
- 7:56Speaker 4: into coaching. When you sign a big contract, when you've
- 7:59Speaker 4: reached this level, this is not immune to anybody and
- 8:03Speaker 4: certainly not remain to just jail on hurts, but you
- 8:06Speaker 4: start to view yourself a little bit differently. And I
- 8:08Speaker 4: think that that is fair reporting that. You know, he's
- 8:12Speaker 4: a guy who's not just good And we saw this
- 8:14Speaker 4: with Carson Wentz. You see with other people that is
- 8:17Speaker 4: just going to just do what's being told without either
- 8:20Speaker 4: questioning it or having his own imprint on it or
- 8:23Speaker 4: feeling on it, and what you want to call that
- 8:24Speaker 4: on coach boy, Sure some people would.
- 8:27Speaker 5: By the way five five.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I just saw that five to five, so so just
- 8:31Speaker 2: got to base it to tie the game up in
- 8:34Speaker 2: the bottom of the ninth there with two outs in
- 8:36Speaker 2: the bottom of the ninth, So that is happening as
- 8:39Speaker 2: well as when it's five five with the runners on
- 8:41Speaker 2: second and third. Yeah, I'm paying attention to you because
- 8:45Speaker 2: I have a follow up question here.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I'm listening. I'm following along here.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I love that the Philli has decided to wait seven
- 8:51Speaker 4: endings before they start having good at bats.
- 8:52Speaker 3: But whatever.
- 8:55Speaker 4: But yeah, so, so, yeah, I think that that's it's
- 8:57Speaker 4: a fair assessment of him. It certainly something I've heard
- 9:00Speaker 4: about other guys who have excelled in their position as well.
- 9:03Speaker 4: So it's like I said, it's not something that's unique
- 9:06Speaker 4: to just chilling herts.
- 9:07Speaker 3: But no, wait, you got to be coachable though, you
- 9:10Speaker 3: do have to accept coaching.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Right, yes, And and you know I have said all
- 9:15Speaker 2: the time that when things aren't going well, when things
- 9:19Speaker 2: are going find everything's fine. But when things aren't going well,
- 9:22Speaker 2: he seems very just not relatable, like just not one
- 9:28Speaker 2: of us, not one of the guys. And then say, hey,
- 9:29Speaker 2: how come things were going well well? So and so,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and yesterday you hear the owner speak glowingly about him,
- 9:37Speaker 2: and it felt like some people are saying he has
- 9:39Speaker 2: poor body language, he doesn't buy in, he's not coachable,
- 9:42Speaker 2: and we notice it, but the people who matter don't
- 9:45Speaker 2: notice it, and that gets frustrating. If that's the case.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it can be, I mean, and I think that,
- 9:51Speaker 4: you know, we have probably had discussions like this over
- 9:54Speaker 4: the last few years about his relayabile, relatability.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Approachability, things of that nature.
- 10:01Speaker 4: In the end of the day, I don't think it's
- 10:04Speaker 4: the biggest thing in the world. I think it gets
- 10:05Speaker 4: magnified when you lose and then sort of brushed over
- 10:09Speaker 4: when you win.
- 10:10Speaker 3: But the reality is the Eagles are either winning.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Super Bowls or getting knocked out of the first round,
- 10:15Speaker 4: so it's gonna come.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Up when that happens.
- 10:17Speaker 4: And that's sort of a part of their story of
- 10:21Speaker 4: being this ultra successful franchise who either wins it all
- 10:24Speaker 4: or disappoints people and then to a point where you
- 10:27Speaker 4: don't understand what's going on. And that's a part of
- 10:29Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts the story he is. I thought this The
- 10:31Speaker 4: story on ESPN did a really interesting job of pointing
- 10:34Speaker 4: out that when he's not the guy, right like, you
- 10:39Speaker 4: see him work so hard to become the guy, and
- 10:42Speaker 4: now he is.
- 10:43Speaker 3: He's not losing his job to Tua. Heear he's won
- 10:46Speaker 3: a super Bowl.
- 10:46Speaker 4: He's not the guy that has to have the chip
- 10:48Speaker 4: on his shoulder anymore because he's the guy that people
- 10:51Speaker 4: want to be and you have to handle that differently.
- 10:54Speaker 4: And the story did a good job to explain now
- 10:57Speaker 4: and the source has said, he's got to get used
- 10:59Speaker 4: to that now. Okay, he's got to be a little
- 11:01Speaker 4: more related, but he's got to stop acting like you know,
- 11:04Speaker 4: twenty people are disrespecting him all the time. He's signed
- 11:06Speaker 4: a contract, he's won the Super Bowl. Yeah, throw your
- 11:09Speaker 4: arm around another guy who might be struggling.
- 11:11Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:12Speaker 2: One of the I thought parts of this that was
- 11:15Speaker 2: that stood out was that sources close to Jalen Hurts
- 11:17Speaker 2: says he has too many yes people around him, and
- 11:21Speaker 2: then you have Sean Mannion. You know, how does that
- 11:25Speaker 2: comment resonate with a thirty three year old first time coordinator.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yeah, that's great, And I think I think that goes
- 11:32Speaker 4: back to the conversation where you just never thought after
- 11:36Speaker 4: the Eagles fired Kevin Batulo that they were going to
- 11:39Speaker 4: hire another novice play caller, but they like Sean Mann
- 11:43Speaker 4: and they think he's really brilliant, and honestly, if they're
- 11:47Speaker 4: going to put their eggs in that basket, they expect
- 11:49Speaker 4: him to coach Jalen Hurts, and that means they expect
- 11:52Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts to take the coaching.
- 11:54Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 11:54Speaker 2: If not add to this, Jeff is the report that
- 11:58Speaker 2: there were tense more between him and Kellen Moore, but
- 12:02Speaker 2: they won the Super Bowl, So that kind of tells
- 12:04Speaker 2: me Kellen Moore pushed back on him where maybe Patullo
- 12:08Speaker 2: did not.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Well, I mean, this is a This reminds me of
- 12:11Speaker 4: a lot of conversations from that year. Kellen Moore tried
- 12:14Speaker 4: to run his offense for about four or five weeks,
- 12:17Speaker 4: and the story that came out today pointed out we
- 12:19Speaker 4: talked about that on ad Nausea that year on inside
- 12:23Speaker 4: the Birds tried to run his style of offense a
- 12:25Speaker 4: lot more motion. At the end of the day, after
- 12:29Speaker 4: the sixth week of the season, it was a lot
- 12:31Speaker 4: more like the Eagles offense with some motion.
- 12:34Speaker 3: They did to do more motion than maybe they had
- 12:37Speaker 3: done prior.
- 12:37Speaker 4: But the point is you can either call that a
- 12:40Speaker 4: compromise or you can call that a coach getting frustrated,
- 12:44Speaker 4: crumbling up the paper and saying we're just going to
- 12:47Speaker 4: run the ball, which is another way to look at
- 12:48Speaker 4: it too, And they did that really well.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Why is there such a massive disconnect in your mind
- 12:54Speaker 2: regarding Hurtz going under center or play action I mean
- 12:59Speaker 2: to me, or not well play action, but also setting
- 13:02Speaker 2: a man in motion to me, like if he's unwilling
- 13:05Speaker 2: to just like just take the under center thing, Okay,
- 13:08Speaker 2: he's not comfortable with that. That I can understand. Sending
- 13:11Speaker 2: a guy in motion he would be adverse like that
- 13:14Speaker 2: to me?
- 13:14Speaker 3: Is no, I get it. You know Peyton Manning hated
- 13:17Speaker 3: motion as well.
- 13:18Speaker 5: By the way, yeah, I've heard that reporting.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Definitely, when you send players in motion, the defense adjusts.
- 13:25Speaker 4: And usually you send a person in motion right before
- 13:27Speaker 4: you snap the ball, right, so if the defense then adjusts,
- 13:31Speaker 4: as a quarterback, when you're in the shotgun, especially, you
- 13:34Speaker 4: have already surveyed the defense and you have already figured
- 13:37Speaker 4: out what you want to do based on that defensive look.
- 13:40Speaker 4: So if now you have a motion man that changes
- 13:43Speaker 4: the defense at the snap. Now, as a quarterback, you
- 13:46Speaker 4: have to do mid snap or post snap, I should say,
- 13:50Speaker 4: processing and figure out perhaps a different throw than you
- 13:54Speaker 4: might have thought before the motion based on.
- 13:57Speaker 3: The defensive Look, gotcha, So I can understan and that.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Now someone will say, listen, you want to be a
- 14:03Speaker 4: high profile quarterback in the NFL, you have to be
- 14:05Speaker 4: a good post snap processor. And that would be the
- 14:08Speaker 4: knock that Jaln's much more of a pre snap determiner
- 14:11Speaker 4: than a post snap processor, So that that's the rock
- 14:15Speaker 4: quarterback wouldn't want that. The back to the The the
- 14:19Speaker 4: under center versus shotgun thing is twofold. Also one he
- 14:22Speaker 4: doesn't like to have his bet when you go and shot.
- 14:25Speaker 4: When you go under center and then you snap the ball,
- 14:28Speaker 4: whether you're passing or running, your back has to face
- 14:30Speaker 4: the defense. So if it's a play action pass for
- 14:33Speaker 4: most you have to fake to the running back with
- 14:35Speaker 4: your back facing the defense. Then you lose that picture
- 14:38Speaker 4: in your head. And quarterbacks who play exclusively out of
- 14:41Speaker 4: the shotgun the way Hurtz did in college don't really
- 14:43Speaker 4: like to do that because it's new to them and
- 14:46Speaker 4: they don't want to see the picture change while they're
- 14:48Speaker 4: turning their back. In fact, Mike I brought this up
- 14:51Speaker 4: in a story that I wrote during the season. Minnesota
- 14:54Speaker 4: game is the first game where they showed under center
- 14:57Speaker 4: jumpbo package play action.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:59Speaker 4: You remember the touch down he threw to Devonte Smith
- 15:01Speaker 4: in that game bomb that came from under center. If
- 15:04Speaker 4: you go back and watch that, it was a very
- 15:07Speaker 4: uniquely drawn up play where he was under center, but
- 15:09Speaker 4: he never actually fully turned his back when he faked
- 15:14Speaker 4: the handoff to sa Quon Barkley. It was one of
- 15:17Speaker 4: those kind of side and then a quick throw. He
- 15:20Speaker 4: never fully did the full pivot. It wasn't true downhill
- 15:25Speaker 4: play action because he never turned his back to the
- 15:27Speaker 4: defense in that snap. So that's something that again quarterbacks
- 15:32Speaker 4: don't like, and Jalen like obviously being at a shotgun
- 15:36Speaker 4: for most of his career because that also presented the
- 15:38Speaker 4: fact that he could run. The defense isn't gonna think
- 15:41Speaker 4: you're gonna run if you're under the quarterback. I mean,
- 15:43Speaker 4: if you're under center when you're in shotgun, that brings
- 15:46Speaker 4: the RPO element, It brings a zone read element that
- 15:49Speaker 4: was a big part of his career for the first
- 15:50Speaker 4: four or five years.
- 15:52Speaker 2: There's a report from Jeremy Foul. We're talking with Jeff Bosher.
- 15:54Speaker 2: It's football for that. You know that he changes the
- 15:57Speaker 2: plays at the line of scrimmage to win a sessive
- 16:00Speaker 2: degree freestyling. Sometimes he calls plays that are not installed
- 16:05Speaker 2: in the package. Is that something that we should be
- 16:08Speaker 2: shocked by or is that normal?
- 16:11Speaker 4: I just think that that's a good at least way
- 16:13Speaker 4: for people to understand.
- 16:15Speaker 3: And they won't anyway. I mean many will I shouldn't
- 16:18Speaker 3: say everybody, but they'll be the detractors.
- 16:21Speaker 4: But you know, for all the throwing under we said
- 16:24Speaker 4: all the time, you can't blame the play caller for
- 16:26Speaker 4: every play call. Because a guy goes into the huddle
- 16:30Speaker 4: with two or three calls to begin with based on
- 16:32Speaker 4: the defensive look, and they settle on a play call.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Because of all the checks and the changes of defense,
- 16:36Speaker 4: then the play call changes a lot, and that's up
- 16:38Speaker 4: to the quarterback in that regard, especially a veteran quarterback,
- 16:42Speaker 4: to make sure he's making the right play call.
- 16:43Speaker 3: So I have no I don't think the issue is.
- 16:45Speaker 4: That Jalen Hurts changes the plays a lot, because again,
- 16:48Speaker 4: every quarterback does that. I think the issue is, are
- 16:51Speaker 4: you changing it to a play call that's good that
- 16:55Speaker 4: it is a good play against that defense, because we
- 16:57Speaker 4: know that Jalen Hurts prefers to throw the deep ball
- 17:01Speaker 4: outside the sidelines, right. And then that's where the fourth
- 17:03Speaker 4: and sixth play against Green Bay came in, where he
- 17:06Speaker 4: changed the call and Rick Nick Sirianni was like, what
- 17:09Speaker 4: are you doing? You know, and everybody blames Patulo and
- 17:12Speaker 4: Sirianni and calls them idiots, and you know, reminds everybody
- 17:15Speaker 4: that Jalen Hurts won the Super Bowl, but they want.
- 17:17Speaker 3: To ignore that part, and that part can't be ignored.
- 17:20Speaker 4: You can change a play call, but you've got you
- 17:22Speaker 4: can't call the same play all the time just because
- 17:25Speaker 4: that's your strength. It's got to be a good play
- 17:27Speaker 4: call to come back to defense.
- 17:30Speaker 2: The how much pressure of any does this report put
- 17:34Speaker 2: on Sirianni?
- 17:35Speaker 3: Do you think? I think it puts more pressure on
- 17:38Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts.
- 17:40Speaker 4: I mean, they're they're inextricted, inextricably linked anyway, Like if
- 17:44Speaker 4: the Eagles had a terrible year ago six and eleven,
- 17:47Speaker 4: they're probably both going to lose their jobs, you know.
- 17:51Speaker 4: But I think just the idea that they went out
- 17:53Speaker 4: and hired Sean Manion because they think he's an amazing
- 17:57Speaker 4: designer or offense or he had great ideas and they
- 18:00Speaker 4: didn't go with a veteran play caller.
- 18:02Speaker 3: It shows you that they weren't just gonna.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I asked that question just because if uncoachable, that narrative
- 18:11Speaker 2: continues and the offense isn't good Again, does the organization
- 18:16Speaker 2: look at hurts or that the coach can't coach the quarterback?
- 18:23Speaker 3: Say it again? Let me think about the said.
- 18:26Speaker 2: So I asked the question about Sirianni. Is that if
- 18:29Speaker 2: uncoachable is the word, and that narrative continues, does ownership
- 18:35Speaker 2: and how we say the offense if the offense struggles again,
- 18:39Speaker 2: is that them saying you're not getting through to this quarterback.
- 18:44Speaker 5: He's our guy and you're not getting through to them.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't answer that, man. I think I have
- 18:49Speaker 4: the same question you do. You know the owners of
- 18:51Speaker 4: the owner?
- 18:52Speaker 5: Does the owner gave a glowing report about him and.
- 18:55Speaker 3: That and that's not lip service? The owner really dies
- 18:57Speaker 3: like he didn't.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Give a glowing report about Jalen Carter.
- 19:01Speaker 3: That was funny, confusing one for the other. But the
- 19:05Speaker 3: owner really does like Jalen Hurts now the owners.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Owners liked a lot of players who eventually walked out
- 19:12Speaker 4: the door because they weren't getting a job done. So
- 19:13Speaker 4: the owner is still the owner and he still got
- 19:15Speaker 4: a bottom line.
- 19:16Speaker 3: But you got to remember this about Jalen Hurtz and
- 19:18Speaker 3: the owner.
- 19:19Speaker 4: The owner was involved in that decision to draft him
- 19:23Speaker 4: and took a lot of heat for it and now
- 19:25Speaker 4: looks like the biggest genius in the NFL because Jalen
- 19:29Speaker 4: Hurts has turned successful. So it'll probably take a lot,
- 19:34Speaker 4: But I would say a bad season is a lot, right.
- 19:37Speaker 4: I mean you just heard him say when they fall
- 19:39Speaker 4: short of winning the Super Bowl, it's disappointing.
- 19:41Speaker 3: So he loves the guy. He's not going to give
- 19:45Speaker 3: up on him easily.
- 19:46Speaker 4: But at the same time, you're presenting sort of a
- 19:49Speaker 4: doomsday scenario. What if this thing backfires and the offense
- 19:52Speaker 4: is horrible again, Well, I think then anything is on
- 19:55Speaker 4: the table.
- 19:55Speaker 2: We're calcified. That was the word that they used to
- 19:59Speaker 2: describe the offense. When you talk to people around the
- 20:02Speaker 2: league or you look at the Eagles, do they view
- 20:04Speaker 2: this as a the limitations of Jalen Hurts or has
- 20:08Speaker 2: it been Nick Sirianni's offense is very vanilla.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Well, you know, one thing about the offense that we
- 20:14Speaker 4: expect to be implemented, Mike, is it. It's supposed to
- 20:17Speaker 4: come with a whole lot of answers, and typically Shanahan
- 20:21Speaker 4: McVey style quarterbacks, the floor don't have to change the
- 20:25Speaker 4: play as much because the answers are already supposed to
- 20:28Speaker 4: be built in. So that's my way of saying, I
- 20:31Speaker 4: look forward to seeing on you know, what happens with
- 20:33Speaker 4: the Eagles offense.
- 20:34Speaker 3: There's support.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I think that's a big reason why Manion's here, so
- 20:37Speaker 4: that Jalen may not have to make as many of
- 20:39Speaker 4: those decisions.
- 20:41Speaker 2: The report has dozens of sources, so there's a lot
- 20:45Speaker 2: of people who spoke on this.
- 20:46Speaker 5: So why now.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I can't answer that I'm not the author.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Well, I only asked that as a guy who's a reporter,
- 20:53Speaker 2: you know, because again, this wasn't set out to go
- 20:57Speaker 2: after Jalen Hurts this right. This story was about the offense.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So so people might say, well, why now are the
- 21:03Speaker 2: Eagles trying to get the message to Jalen that we
- 21:07Speaker 2: know what's been going on here buddy or not?
- 21:10Speaker 5: Are you not reading it? That way.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I don't think a story like this comes out because
- 21:15Speaker 4: the Eagles facilitate it.
- 21:18Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:21Speaker 3: So other than that, I really couldn't tell you why now.
- 21:23Speaker 5: All right. The other part of the story.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Is AJ Brown is involved in the story a little bit,
- 21:31Speaker 2: believe it or not. And it was pretty blunt about
- 21:34Speaker 2: AJ Brown's effort and his struggles when it came to
- 21:37Speaker 2: zone defenses.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Right, That's what I got from it.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And is the friction that has happened between Hurts and
- 21:46Speaker 2: Brown a result of the scheme that they run failing them?
- 21:51Speaker 2: Or is this Brown just not liking the offense?
- 22:00Speaker 3: Well, I'll just you know again, I'll give you my
- 22:04Speaker 3: feeling on it. That's independent of the story. I think
- 22:07Speaker 3: back to.
- 22:10Speaker 5: Has just won the game for the Phillies.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Ah man, this kid is really off to such a
- 22:15Speaker 3: great start.
- 22:15Speaker 4: And you know why because he's putting the ball on
- 22:16Speaker 4: the ground, he's beaten out hits, He's he's not trying
- 22:19Speaker 4: to hit home runs. Although he did hit a nice
- 22:21Speaker 4: double off the wall. He might have to back clean up, Mike.
- 22:23Speaker 4: That's the way he's going. Yeah, what a great, great
- 22:27Speaker 4: at bat by Crawford there, I will say I'll go
- 22:29Speaker 4: back to I forget what game it was where A. J.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Brown had a couple of touchdowns. One of them was
- 22:36Speaker 4: because a guy fell I think it was man. It
- 22:38Speaker 4: was man to man and Hurts threw it up left.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Side caught touchdown.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Another one was was a really nice pass in between
- 22:46Speaker 4: two defenders.
- 22:48Speaker 3: I'm not sure if it was mannered on on that one.
- 22:50Speaker 3: But after the game, A J.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Brown, you know, everybody thought he would be like finally happy,
- 22:55Speaker 4: and he had that post that said use me, but
- 22:57Speaker 4: don't use me, right ye ye, Yet my my read.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Into that, without you know, AJ clarifying it was.
- 23:05Speaker 4: That, yeah, like, yeah, I'm there for you on your
- 23:08Speaker 4: signature deep bombs, right, but like when I'm opening zone,
- 23:12Speaker 4: when when there are other plays where you could get
- 23:14Speaker 4: me the ball.
- 23:15Speaker 3: You don't want to do it. That was that was
- 23:17Speaker 3: kind of my my read on that.
- 23:19Speaker 4: But but but to the story's point, and something we've
- 23:22Speaker 4: talked about with Greg Cosell on inside the tape that
- 23:25Speaker 4: we do every week, you know, twice a week during
- 23:27Speaker 4: the season where we break down the offense every week.
- 23:29Speaker 4: It's it's quite clear that he was far more successful
- 23:35Speaker 4: of a of a touchdown maker against man than zone.
- 23:38Speaker 4: But I will say that that Chargers game and then
- 23:40Speaker 4: moving when they started to do some different things offensively,
- 23:43Speaker 4: I thought he made some really really good improvements throwing
- 23:47Speaker 4: between the numbers and in the middle of the field
- 23:51Speaker 4: from the Chargers game to the game after that, and
- 23:53Speaker 4: then all of a sudden it went like at the
- 23:55Speaker 4: end of the year. I went back through, you didn't
- 23:57Speaker 4: see it, which is confounding to me. But I guess
- 24:00Speaker 4: that's why this story came out.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Well, this reminds me a lot of and you guys
- 24:03Speaker 2: that inside the Birds have John d Philippo as a guest.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You know plenty of times over the years that when
- 24:08Speaker 2: Wentz had d Philippo, he coached him really hard and
- 24:11Speaker 2: the result was Carson Wentz was an MVP candidate. And
- 24:15Speaker 2: then when he left and Carson kind of got his way.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So maybe Jalen Hurts is someone who needs that hard coaching.
- 24:24Speaker 4: I most quarterbacks need hard coaching, you know, no doubt,
- 24:28Speaker 4: no doubt if you go back to the Brady Belichick
- 24:33Speaker 4: era and it didn't end great. But I mean, who's
- 24:35Speaker 4: argued with all the success in the Super Bowls, that
- 24:37Speaker 4: ESPN story that came out that sort of detailed how
- 24:40Speaker 4: things got wonky at the end.
- 24:43Speaker 3: You know.
- 24:43Speaker 6: Part of the build up though to winning all those
- 24:46Speaker 6: titles was Brady accepting from Bill that he was going
- 24:50Speaker 6: to make a remark every once in a while, like
- 24:52Speaker 6: the quarterback at Foxborough High could have made that throw, right. So,
- 24:57Speaker 6: and Bill's message to Brady early in his career, I
- 25:00Speaker 6: need to be able to coach you hard despite the
- 25:03Speaker 6: fact that you're a superstar, because that's the tone.
- 25:06Speaker 4: We have to set here for to have succeint sustained success.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Nobody can be bigger than the team, and so I
- 25:13Speaker 4: think all quarterbacks need that.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Just to uh, you know, you mentioned the balance of
- 25:18Speaker 2: the story. There is a part of the story that
- 25:20Speaker 2: says one team source says that Hurts is quote as
- 25:23Speaker 2: open as he's ever been to changes. So training can't
- 25:29Speaker 2: get it, can't get here soon enough, right.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Hurts Hurts PR team doing a great job too.
- 25:33Speaker 4: You gotta love it Eagles PR team versus Hurts PR
- 25:36Speaker 4: team very well.
- 25:37Speaker 3: The Eagles, by the way.
- 25:38Speaker 2: The Eagles, by the way did not comment on the story, correct, right,
- 25:44Speaker 2: I don't know what that messaging is.
- 25:46Speaker 3: What do you think you're not gonna comment?
- 25:50Speaker 5: All? Right? All right, football for Jeff Moser. Good one.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Today Phillies win justin Crawford with an RBI single in
- 25:57Speaker 2: the bottom of the tenth. By the way, Doran came
- 25:59Speaker 2: in and pitch the top of the tenth and one
- 26:02Speaker 2: two three inning. There Philly's down five two, a Harper homer,
- 26:07Speaker 2: a real Muto homer, and then a couple of runs
- 26:10Speaker 2: to tie it in the ninth and a Crawford single
- 26:12Speaker 2: to win it in the tenth. There we go, Jeff Mocher,
- 26:15Speaker 2: good stuff when you come on.
- 26:17Speaker 4: And again we don't get to my Yukon husky. So
- 26:19Speaker 4: I guess we'll have to talk about it on Monday,
- 26:21Speaker 4: when they're going to be playing for a national title.
- 26:23Speaker 3: I guess that's what we're gonna have to do, Mike.
- 26:26Speaker 5: All right, we'll talk about it Monday. By all right,
- 26:30Speaker 5: Jeff Mocher,
