- 0:47Speaker 3: in the mountain time zone for pfl action today brewers
- 0:56Speaker 3: in the world series tyson ewing behind the glass by
- 0:59Speaker 3: the way filling in my regular role.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Excuse me.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I said, Ewing, I went the whole show saying the
- 1:07Speaker 3: right last name.
- 1:08Speaker 4: It's Tyson Whiting.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Shout out to Tyson Ewing, who this Tyson, Tyson Whiting,
- 1:15Speaker 3: who I just messed up your name. You know that
- 1:18Speaker 3: we've worked with Tyson Ewing a very long time calling
- 1:20Speaker 3: women's basketball games, new women's basketball voice this year, Spencer McLaughlin,
- 1:24Speaker 3: looking forward to getting to know Spencer.
- 1:26Speaker 4: So that's for the listeners out there.
- 1:28Speaker 3: That's why We're probably going to get Tyson Whiting's last
- 1:32Speaker 3: name wrong.
- 1:33Speaker 4: And for you, Tyson.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It happens all the time.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Two great play-by-play voices in the market with the same
- 1:38Speaker 3: first name.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Yeah, that can be tough.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Tyson Whiting behind the glass. Thank you for correcting me.
- 1:45Speaker 2: How about those Brewers? First time in the World Series
- 1:47Speaker 2: since 1982. First time as a National League team reaching
- 1:51Speaker 2: the World Series because the other time they were in
- 1:52Speaker 2: the World Series, they were an American League team.
- 1:55Speaker 4: It was that long ago.
- 1:55Speaker 5: St.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Louis Cardinals lost in seven games.
- 1:58Speaker 4: It was that long ago.
- 1:59Speaker 3: 1982 as an American League team, 44 years ago was
- 2:05Speaker 3: the last time the Brewers were in the World Series
- 2:08Speaker 3: until they swept the Dodgers last night. All of us
- 2:13Speaker 3: Dodgers haters are hyped about that too, Tyson. And honestly,
- 2:17Speaker 3: the Brewers have been a team that I... have never
- 2:19Speaker 3: really liked that much. The franchise probably haven't had an
- 2:22Speaker 3: opinion on them.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I mean, that's the thing. The Brewers have had so
- 2:24Speaker 2: many down years. Like you, you can't even really like
- 2:27Speaker 2: dislike them because it's like, you gotta be, you gotta
- 2:29Speaker 2: be a winner to dislike them.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I've leaned towards disliking though. Just another one of those I've,
- 2:34Speaker 3: I've mentioned on the show before with OC, the Braves,
- 2:37Speaker 3: the Dodgers. And I know that I know Braves are
- 2:40Speaker 3: your team, Tyson, my bad, my bad bringing that up.
- 2:43Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I've transitioned to a Colorado Rockies.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Are you Rockies?
- 2:46Speaker 2: I can relate to the Rockies pretty well because I
- 2:48Speaker 2: went in life at about the same rate. The Rockies
- 2:51Speaker 2: went on the baseball field. So I feel more of
- 2:52Speaker 2: a connection with them.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Okay. But yeah, the Braves, I brought up the Dodgers.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I brought up, I just haven't liked the cut of
- 3:00Speaker 3: their jib, you know, and with the Dodgers just feels
- 3:04Speaker 3: like ruining the competitive balance of the sport. The last
- 3:07Speaker 3: few years have just made that worse. Also the fact
- 3:09Speaker 3: that they're an LA market team and, And I grew
- 3:12Speaker 3: up in Utah, man. I think we're obligated not to
- 3:19Speaker 3: like L.A. sports teams. You know what I mean? But
- 3:22Speaker 3: yet those fans exist.
- 3:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:25Speaker 2: They exist because of the transplants. They're from Southern California.
- 3:28Speaker 2: They go to the University of Utah or they go
- 3:30Speaker 2: to BYU or Utah State, and all of a sudden
- 3:31Speaker 2: they stay here forever.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So a lot of Southern California transplants, that's for sure.
- 3:37Speaker 3: So there's a lot of L.A., sports fans in the market.
- 3:41Speaker 3: There's even just because the Dodgers are a notable West
- 3:45Speaker 3: coast team and we're in the Western United States. There's
- 3:49Speaker 3: a lot of people here who grew up in Utah
- 3:54Speaker 3: and their family. We're all Dodgers fans just because that's
- 3:58Speaker 3: the closest note, most notable baseball team. So I know
- 4:01Speaker 3: we got a fair amount of Dodgers fans here for
- 4:04Speaker 3: various reasons, but you know what, in all of your faces, okay.
- 4:09Speaker 3: You can't buy championships. Well, I guess you could buy
- 4:11Speaker 3: two in a row. You cannot buy three in a row.
- 4:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:14Speaker 3: The Brewers knock off the hated Dodgers in a sweep.
- 4:19Speaker 3: No less in come from behind fashion and like three
- 4:23Speaker 3: of the four games, if I'm not mistaken, Tyson, at
- 4:25Speaker 3: least the last two games. So, or two of the
- 4:29Speaker 3: last three games at the very least. So shout out
- 4:31Speaker 3: to the Brewers. Great story. And you know, Those poor
- 4:38Speaker 3: Dodgers fans who've just had to wade through so many
- 4:47Speaker 3: unfortunate seasons, they will not win a three-peat this year.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So condolences to all of you, but not really. You
- 4:55Speaker 3: just got back. You just won back-to-back World Series. You're
- 4:58Speaker 3: going to be fine.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Maybe next year. Assuming that there isn't next year.
- 5:01Speaker 8: You know what?
- 5:01Speaker 3: There's always next year, right? Game four, ALCS tonight in Cleveland.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Guardians and Rays. Guardians lead Tampa 2-1. That's, again, in
- 5:12Speaker 3: Cleveland coverage starting at 530 here on your home of
- 5:15Speaker 3: the MLB playoffs, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. That's right
- 5:19Speaker 3: after just a slightly shorter drive with Spence Check. It's
- 5:22Speaker 3: going until 530 instead of 6.
- 5:26Speaker 4: So we got.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Baseball playoffs on the station tonight, the only series left.
- 5:32Speaker 3: We'll talk a little bit more about that maybe in
- 5:34Speaker 3: the Daily Dump, maybe later in the show. Utah, Colorado,
- 5:38Speaker 3: tomorrow it's an 8-15 kickoff. This one's not going to
- 5:42Speaker 3: be moved up. We are not going to have hurricane
- 5:46Speaker 3: or tropical storm remnants in Denver area, in the Boulder area. uh, tomorrow.
- 5:52Speaker 3: So this one should stay 15 Tyson, uh, 10 hours
- 5:56Speaker 3: of game day coverage beginning at four 15 with Porter
- 5:59Speaker 3: Larson and the pregame show, just like each and every week.
- 6:02Speaker 3: You can watch that show by the way, on YouTube
- 6:05Speaker 3: as well at ESPN 700 sports, Utah, we've gotten pretty good, uh,
- 6:10Speaker 3: engagement on those pregame shows on YouTube. So if you
- 6:14Speaker 3: haven't checked those out yet, uh, check out Porter Larson
- 6:17Speaker 3: and the pregame show, uh, tomorrow, starting at four 15, uh,
- 6:21Speaker 3: And again, 8.15 kickoff here on your home of the
- 6:24Speaker 3: Utes and your home for football. We got a great
- 6:27Speaker 3: guest list for you. And I fall into that sports
- 6:33Speaker 3: talk radio host guy. I always say it's going to
- 6:35Speaker 3: be a great show today. And we got a great
- 6:37Speaker 3: guest list. People listening are like, well, it better be, right?
- 6:42Speaker 3: Like that's the plan, right? So, of course, once again,
- 6:45Speaker 3: a great guest list for you. Dan Sorensen. Ute Zone founder,
- 6:50Speaker 3: Ute Zone publisher. We were not able to do a
- 6:53Speaker 3: Ute Zone Wednesday this week because Devin Dampier ended up
- 6:55Speaker 3: being live on Wednesday in the regular time slot there.
- 6:58Speaker 3: So we're going to do a Ute Zone Friday on
- 7:00Speaker 3: this football Friday with Dan Sorensen at noon. Lee Sterling,
- 7:05Speaker 3: Paramount Sports, talking sports betting for entertainment purposes only, of course.
- 7:13Speaker 3: at 1245 in his regular spot. Usually we get to
- 7:17Speaker 3: him at 1250, to be honest with you, but it's
- 7:19Speaker 3: somewhere near the bottom of the noon hour. We'll have
- 7:22Speaker 3: Lee Sterling give you some great betting lines for the
- 7:29Speaker 3: college and pro football season. Again, for entertainment purposes only,
- 7:33Speaker 3: of course. And then Daily Dump at 1230, of course.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Coordinator's Corner.
- 7:38Speaker 3: We talked with Mac G, Kevin McGivin, the offensive coordinator
- 7:42Speaker 3: this week, OC did anyway. So that was obviously recorded
- 7:47Speaker 3: earlier in the week. You'll get to hear that at
- 7:49Speaker 3: one o'clock as we are want to do coordinators corner
- 7:54Speaker 3: brought to you by mountain home services, by the way,
- 7:57Speaker 3: and then airing of grievances. If you just cannot wait,
- 8:01Speaker 3: if you got something bugging you right now, go ahead
- 8:04Speaker 3: and send us a text. Don't start dialing the phone
- 8:07Speaker 3: line yet.
- 8:08Speaker 4: We'll wait till one 30.
- 8:09Speaker 3: If you want to be live on the air, Um,
- 8:12Speaker 3: but go ahead and send us a text 8 7
- 8:15Speaker 3: 7 3 5 3 0 700. If you just need
- 8:16Speaker 3: to get it off your chest in text form right now,
- 8:19Speaker 3: we'll wait till one 30 to read them off, but
- 8:22Speaker 3: go ahead and get those grievances in to our text
- 8:25Speaker 3: line right now. 8 7 7 3 5 3 0 700.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Tyson's got a couple, at least a couple of grievances
- 8:31Speaker 3: on one.
- 8:32Speaker 2: My internet's not working right now, so I can't get
- 8:34Speaker 2: to my.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Email a little early Tyson.
- 8:37Speaker 8: All right.
- 8:38Speaker 3: But yes, that is frustrating. Um, and then I know
- 8:44Speaker 3: you got that one and a couple others. I got
- 8:46Speaker 3: a couple to, to get off my chest around one 30.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And I know you guys always do. And, uh, yeah, again,
- 8:52Speaker 3: wait till one 30. Actually, if you want to call
- 8:55Speaker 3: us and talk to me directly on the air about
- 8:58Speaker 3: your grievance, get that off your chest, wait till one
- 9:01Speaker 3: 30 there, but you can text it in right now.
- 9:03Speaker 4: We'll, we'll get them in the queue as it were.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Uh, want to start off today though, Tyson with, uh,
- 9:10Speaker 3: probably the topic of the day in college football, which
- 9:16Speaker 3: is not the BYU Notre Dame game tomorrow, which is
- 9:20Speaker 3: obviously a huge thing. Two top 10 teams game day
- 9:24Speaker 3: in Provo, Steve Young, celebrity picker. We'll, we'll get to
- 9:27Speaker 3: that a little later, but the topic of the day
- 9:30Speaker 3: nationally is what broke at the end of the show. Well,
- 9:32Speaker 3: middle of the show yesterday, Tyson, Pete Thamel reported and
- 9:36Speaker 3: Heather Dinich reported that the 2014 playoff is just All
- 9:41Speaker 3: but guaranteed to get started next season. Pending final approvals.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I have not seen an update beyond that. So it
- 9:49Speaker 3: has not been made official yet. But it's official enough
- 9:55Speaker 3: that you got insiders like Pete Thamel and Heather Dinich
- 9:57Speaker 3: who break these kinds of stories. break this kind of
- 10:00Speaker 3: news saying that it's going to happen starting next season.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So 2014 playoff field, it's 12 team for one more
- 10:08Speaker 3: year this season. Unfortunately, when it comes to BYU, Utah
- 10:15Speaker 3: and Texas tech and other big 12 teams, it's not
- 10:19Speaker 3: a 2014 playoff this year because that if it were
- 10:21Speaker 3: a 2014 playoff this year, there'd be three, maybe four
- 10:23Speaker 3: teams in the field from the big 12, maybe even
- 10:26Speaker 3: all five that are ranked right now in the field,
- 10:30Speaker 3: including Utah and BYU. But this year it's going to
- 10:36Speaker 3: be half that size. Once again, 12 team, good chance
- 10:40Speaker 3: right now. It looks like that two of those teams
- 10:42Speaker 3: gets in, especially if BYU is, pulls off the upset
- 10:46Speaker 3: at home against Notre Dame tomorrow.
- 10:48Speaker 4: But I digress.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Well, first thing I wanted to look at, Tyson, is
- 10:53Speaker 3: how many times the CFP has been around since 2014.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It was a four-team field, of course, for the first
- 11:01Speaker 3: about 10 years, and then the last few years it's
- 11:03Speaker 3: been a 12-team field. Assuming that all, what's this, the 13th, 12th,
- 11:09Speaker 3: 13th season of the CFP? Assuming that Baker's dozen years
- 11:16Speaker 3: were always a 2014 field, how many times would Utah
- 11:20Speaker 3: and BYU have made the playoff?
- 11:23Speaker 2: I would think quite a few times.
- 11:27Speaker 4: For Utah?
- 11:27Speaker 2: Probably eight times.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Okay, you nailed it with Utah eight times. Do you
- 11:31Speaker 3: have a guess for BYU?
- 11:33Speaker 2: Probably six.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Six? You're close there.
- 11:35Speaker 2: It's four.
- 11:36Speaker 4: So eight for Utah, four for BYU.
- 11:38Speaker 3: And the reason why it's half as many times for
- 11:41Speaker 3: BYU is because that independence era, BYU just did not
- 11:45Speaker 3: have enough great seasons in that independence era. And they
- 11:49Speaker 3: didn't have as much, they wouldn't have had as much
- 11:52Speaker 3: access to the playoff because they're not in a conference, right,
- 11:55Speaker 3: in that time. So that kind of, that hampered them
- 11:58Speaker 3: in the first, what, almost 10 years, nine, 10 years
- 12:02Speaker 3: of the playoff.
- 12:04Speaker 2: On both teams, they could be very consistent over the
- 12:06Speaker 2: next decade, assuming it's a 2014 playoff and assuming both
- 12:09Speaker 2: programs continue to be as consistent as they have been.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I think what concerns me, though, as you talk about
- 12:16Speaker 2: BYU's huge game tomorrow against Notre Dame, if it's a
- 12:19Speaker 2: 2014 playoff, is that game as big? Is that game
- 12:23Speaker 2: as big knowing that, all right, if BYU loses, they're
- 12:26Speaker 2: probably still in the playoff. If Notre Dame loses, they're
- 12:29Speaker 2: probably still in the playoff. BYU-Utah in a few weeks,
- 12:31Speaker 2: part of what makes that such a huge game is
- 12:34Speaker 2: the thought that there's a playoff spot on the line. Well,
- 12:36Speaker 2: if both teams are undefeated going into that game, one
- 12:38Speaker 2: loss isn't going to hurt them that much. Does that
- 12:42Speaker 2: game feel as big if it's just, well, both teams
- 12:45Speaker 2: are going to be in the playoff anyway?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Absolutely, and we'll get into that.
- 12:48Speaker 3: That's certainly a concern that I share, and I think
- 12:51Speaker 3: a lot of people, a lot of college football fans
- 12:53Speaker 3: and media share that concern. But going back to how
- 12:58Speaker 3: many times I would have made it, Utah would have
- 13:00Speaker 3: made it eight times BYU would have made it for
- 13:03Speaker 3: Utah's eight times in a 2014 field if that was
- 13:08Speaker 3: what the field had been the entire existence of the
- 13:12Speaker 3: college football playoff going back to the 2014 season would
- 13:15Speaker 3: have been 2014 through 2016. All three of those years
- 13:20Speaker 3: they would have been in the 2014 field. 2018 and
- 13:23Speaker 3: 19 when they lost in the Pac-12 championship game first
- 13:27Speaker 3: against Washington and then against Oregon they would have been
- 13:30Speaker 3: in the field. 21 and 22 when they were Pac-12
- 13:34Speaker 3: champions obviously would have been in the field as an
- 13:37Speaker 3: automatic bid, but also even if they weren't an automatic bid,
- 13:40Speaker 3: they would have been high enough in the rankings to
- 13:41Speaker 3: make a 2014 field back then. And last year, they finished, what,
- 13:46Speaker 3: 15th in the country? They easily would have been in
- 13:49Speaker 3: a 2014 field last year. So that's the eight times.
- 13:53Speaker 3: For BYU, it's all since 2020. So you got that
- 13:57Speaker 3: COVID season that catapulted Zach Wilson into number two overall pick.
- 14:02Speaker 4: For the Jets, he was incredible that season.
- 14:04Speaker 3: BYU has one loss at the end of the year
- 14:07Speaker 3: against Coastal Carolina. They still would have made the playoff
- 14:10Speaker 3: if it were a 24-team field. The very next year
- 14:14Speaker 3: in 21, when there was at least a 10-win season,
- 14:18Speaker 3: maybe an 11-win season, when they beat Utah for the
- 14:22Speaker 3: first time in forever. Cam Rising, of course, doesn't play
- 14:26Speaker 3: in that game. Utes fans like to think, and I personally,
- 14:30Speaker 3: tend to lean this way too. That was a close
- 14:32Speaker 3: enough game. If you have the quarterback that everyone feels
- 14:36Speaker 3: was the right quarterback instead of Charlie Brewer playing, maybe
- 14:39Speaker 3: that game goes differently, but he didn't play.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:41Speaker 3: So, so that's a win for BYU in the record
- 14:44Speaker 3: books and always will be anyway, that great, those back-to-back
- 14:47Speaker 3: great seasons for BYU, they would have been in a
- 14:49Speaker 3: 24 team playoff field. Um, and then the last two
- 14:53Speaker 3: years for BYU 24 and 25, they would have easily
- 14:56Speaker 3: been in a 24 team playoff field. And this year,
- 15:01Speaker 3: if it were 24 teams, they're both undefeated, Utah and BYU.
- 15:05Speaker 3: So they're trending towards– and BYU's top 10, Utah's right
- 15:10Speaker 3: outside the top 10 right now. So they're both trending
- 15:14Speaker 3: towards being included in a 24-team field if that was
- 15:19Speaker 3: the playoff format for this year. So you're looking at
- 15:23Speaker 3: a ninth year for Utah, a fifth year for BYU,
- 15:26Speaker 3: a third year in a row for BYU if that
- 15:28Speaker 3: was– if that was the format this year. So that
- 15:32Speaker 3: gives you an idea of the upside, reason for feeling
- 15:38Speaker 3: good about a 24-team field for us local fans and media,
- 15:45Speaker 3: people that cover the team and people that root for
- 15:48Speaker 3: these teams. More years than not, Utah and BYU.
- 15:54Speaker 4: we'll make a.
- 15:55Speaker 3: 2014 playoff field as long as the house is in order, right?
- 15:59Speaker 3: As long as you would think Kalani Satake is leading BYU,
- 16:03Speaker 3: as long as Morgan Scali is leading Utah, they're going
- 16:06Speaker 3: to make the playoffs. So that's a reason to feel
- 16:09Speaker 3: good about it. Spence, at the end of the last show, Tyson,
- 16:12Speaker 3: called it the middle class benefiting from this. Middle class meaning, like,
- 16:18Speaker 3: numbers 13 through 25 in the top 25 every year,
- 16:20Speaker 3: who those teams.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Always are missing out on certainly a four-team playoff, the
- 16:27Speaker 3: original four-team playoff, and this current 12-team field. But 24-team field,
- 16:35Speaker 3: all but one of those teams are in, right? So that,
- 16:37Speaker 3: if you call that the middle class, absolutely benefits those teams.
- 16:40Speaker 3: You get access. But you bring up, you brought up, Tyson,
- 16:45Speaker 3: a really important point, which is, and Spence brought this
- 16:48Speaker 3: up too, I've heard others bring it up on national shows.
- 16:52Speaker 3: I tend to agree with this too. Does it dilute
- 16:55Speaker 3: the regular season too much? Will we still feel the
- 17:00Speaker 3: same high stakes in the Holy war game in Ohio state?
- 17:06Speaker 4: I'm Ohio state fan.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Of course, not just the game against Michigan, but they
- 17:10Speaker 3: played number one and number four, Texas this year, number
- 17:13Speaker 3: four at the time, Texas, Ohio state was preseason. Number
- 17:16Speaker 3: one at the time, they lose that game to Texas and, Already,
- 17:21Speaker 3: Ohio State still feels like they're in no danger of
- 17:24Speaker 3: missing the playoff because of that. But it's like, you
- 17:30Speaker 3: don't even have to play your best game. You don't
- 17:33Speaker 3: have to have sweat that you play your best game.
- 17:34Speaker 3: With a 2014 playoff, you lose that game. So these
- 17:38Speaker 3: huge games on the schedule, whether they be rivalry games
- 17:41Speaker 3: or great ranked-on-ranked non-conference games, do they have any meaning
- 17:47Speaker 3: in a 2014 field?
- 17:51Speaker 2: Oh, they probably do if you're ranked 20, if you're 22, 23, 24,
- 17:54Speaker 2: but those probably aren't huge games because you're kind of
- 17:57Speaker 2: in the middle of the pack. Nobody's thinking of, okay,
- 17:59Speaker 2: number 20 versus number 24 being a huge game. All
- 18:02Speaker 2: of a sudden that may be a bigger game because
- 18:04Speaker 2: of playoff implications, but you'd like to see top 10 games,
- 18:08Speaker 2: you know, have a similar type of meaning. You maybe
- 18:11Speaker 2: hope that one benefit could be if there's 24 playoff
- 18:14Speaker 2: teams that maybe more teams will have the incentive of
- 18:16Speaker 2: playing tougher non-conference games as opposed to Indiana playing, uh,
- 18:21Speaker 2: Kearns high school, Taylorsville high school, and mixing in with the,
- 18:24Speaker 2: some Sunbelt school. That's our non-conference schedule. You know, maybe
- 18:28Speaker 2: it may be, you know, some other teams would be like, well,
- 18:31Speaker 2: one loss isn't going to hurt us that much. So
- 18:33Speaker 2: maybe we can go out and go play a tough
- 18:35Speaker 2: non-conference game.
- 18:36Speaker 3: The fans want to see, I mean, think about this again,
- 18:38Speaker 3: Ohio state, they had a big noon kickoff game the
- 18:44Speaker 3: same day that the actual big noon kickoff show was
- 18:47Speaker 3: in London. for Arizona State-Kansas, a Big 12 game. The
- 18:52Speaker 3: actual 10 a.m. game was in Columbus. They were playing
- 18:56Speaker 3: Kent State this year. Gus Johnson fell asleep on the air,
- 19:00Speaker 3: pretty much.
- 19:01Speaker 2: He was incredibly bored by the time Ohio State made
- 19:04Speaker 2: it 42-0.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 19:06Speaker 3: And that's Gus Johnson, who's always excited, right? So that's
- 19:10Speaker 3: what we have now when... Teams are kind of afraid
- 19:17Speaker 3: to lose games in September because it's only a 12-team field, right?
- 19:22Speaker 3: You can't really afford more than two losses and feel
- 19:28Speaker 3: like you can make the playoff as an at-large. Certainly
- 19:34Speaker 3: can't really afford to lose more than one game and
- 19:37Speaker 3: make the field as an automatic bid. in a power
- 19:39Speaker 3: for conference is a conference champion, right? You get the
- 19:43Speaker 3: occasional three, three loss team that gets in, but in
- 19:49Speaker 3: the 14 playoffs, it's like, as soon as you lost
- 19:51Speaker 3: your second game, you were basically eliminated in this 12
- 19:53Speaker 3: team playoff. As soon as you lose your third game,
- 19:56Speaker 3: you're basically eliminated in a 2014 playoff. You may not
- 19:59Speaker 3: be completely out of it till you lose your fourth game.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So in the sec or big 10.
- 20:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 3: So that, I mean, is there going to be the
- 20:08Speaker 3: same kind of stakes, same kind of meaning to every
- 20:12Speaker 3: game on the schedule? I think naturally it will not,
- 20:16Speaker 3: that will not exist. You bring up a benefit though,
- 20:19Speaker 3: a potential benefit though, Tyson, because you can afford to
- 20:23Speaker 3: lose multiple games and still be in the playoff picture.
- 20:28Speaker 3: The hope is, and I've heard this, Ted Robinson was
- 20:31Speaker 3: on with Spence check.
- 20:32Speaker 4: It's yesterday.
- 20:32Speaker 3: The, uh, the, former Pac-12 network legend, and he's done
- 20:36Speaker 3: so many other things, pro and college sports. He was
- 20:40Speaker 3: on the show yesterday because he's a Notre Dame alum,
- 20:42Speaker 3: and they were talking a lot about this Notre Dame-BYU game.
- 20:47Speaker 3: And Ted brought up, did you watch the games in
- 20:51Speaker 3: September from the Power 4 teams? I brought up a
- 20:54Speaker 3: glaring one. for me as an Ohio state fan, when
- 20:57Speaker 3: they played Kent state on big noon, on a big
- 20:59Speaker 3: noon kickoff game, like no, no, thank you.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Even me. I'm like, I don't need to watch that.
- 21:03Speaker 8: Sorry.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Um, I would have preferred that you just put the
- 21:08Speaker 3: Kansas a ASU at 10 AM mountain time, big noon kickoff,
- 21:14Speaker 3: even though that game doesn't have a lot of juice
- 21:17Speaker 3: to it. Other than the fact that it's at Wembley stadium,
- 21:20Speaker 3: like at least it's two power four teams going at it.
- 21:22Speaker 8: Right.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Um, you had Texas and Ohio state play, but every
- 21:28Speaker 3: year there's like two or three of those big time,
- 21:31Speaker 3: top five, top 10 matchups in, uh, in September, maybe
- 21:37Speaker 3: you get a full month of that with a 2014 playoff.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Cause you're not, you're way less afraid to lose a game.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Maybe instead of an FCS opponent, as your tune in
- 21:46Speaker 3: game to start tune up game to start the year
- 21:49Speaker 3: and a G six opponent group of six opponent, the,
- 21:52Speaker 3: the next week, and then you play maybe a, a
- 21:56Speaker 3: power four team in the non-conference or a higher, even
- 22:00Speaker 3: higher level group of 16, whatever. Maybe you have only
- 22:03Speaker 3: an FCS opponent and then you play a couple of
- 22:06Speaker 3: power four teams in the non-conference because it might be
- 22:10Speaker 3: ranked alongside you because you're not afraid of losing that
- 22:14Speaker 3: game anymore. You're not feeling like if we lose, we
- 22:17Speaker 3: might be out of the playoff picture soon. That could
- 22:20Speaker 3: be a potential benefit. I think that that might be
- 22:22Speaker 3: a little bit wishful thinking though, Tyson, just because teams
- 22:25Speaker 3: can seemingly can do that, can start to feel safer about,
- 22:31Speaker 3: potentially losing one of those games, doesn't mean they want
- 22:34Speaker 3: to schedule.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Tough opponents in September.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I still think we're going to have soft schedules to
- 22:42Speaker 3: start this season, but hopefully less of that.
- 22:45Speaker 2: It's like what Steve Sarkeesian mentioned, yet he doesn't want
- 22:48Speaker 2: to play Ohio State, lose by a field goal or
- 22:50Speaker 2: something like that, and then drop five spots in the rankings,
- 22:54Speaker 2: and then eventually maybe miss a playoff spot because they
- 22:58Speaker 2: scheduled a tough non-conference team. played them close, and somebody's
- 23:02Speaker 2: got to win and somebody's got to lose. And so
- 23:05Speaker 2: hopefully with that, just give them some more incentive. I mean,
- 23:09Speaker 2: you look at a matchup this week where in a
- 23:12Speaker 2: 2014 playoff format, Mississippi State and LSU becomes a huge game.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Mississippi State's 16th in the country, LSU's 24th. So maybe
- 23:20Speaker 2: instead of the top 10 matchups being huge, maybe matchups
- 23:23Speaker 2: like that become huge in the 2014 playoff.
- 23:26Speaker 4: The middle class matchups.
- 23:28Speaker 2: You know, might be on the outside looking in and
- 23:30Speaker 2: that scenario.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 4: And that's another benefit.
- 23:34Speaker 3: More access means later in the year, you're going to
- 23:37Speaker 3: have more games that feel like they have higher stakes.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Also though, we see something in the NBA and the
- 23:46Speaker 3: NFL in particular, all the time when the number one seed,
- 23:52Speaker 3: when someone clinches a number one seed, when someone clinches
- 23:54Speaker 3: a number two seed, what do they do?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Tyson?
- 23:58Speaker 3: They, they rest their starters for the last couple for
- 24:01Speaker 3: the last game or two in the NBA. It's like
- 24:04Speaker 3: the last week in, in NFL, it's, it's one or
- 24:07Speaker 3: two games. I remember I'm old enough to remember as
- 24:09Speaker 3: a Colts fan, 2009, the last time they went to
- 24:12Speaker 3: the super bowl, they were, I think they got to
- 24:16Speaker 3: 14 and oh, and they were, they were the ultimate.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Front runners blowout city.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Every game they play their starters, Peyton Manning and company
- 24:23Speaker 3: for a half against the jets at the end of
- 24:25Speaker 3: the season. And it's like a, They might've been up
- 24:29Speaker 3: one score. They might've been down one score. Didn't play
- 24:32Speaker 3: their starters second half. And it's like, okay, well there
- 24:35Speaker 3: goes the undefeated. There goes potential undefeated season because they're like, well,
- 24:39Speaker 3: we don't, we care about a super bowl, not an
- 24:41Speaker 3: undefeated regular season. They end up going to the super bowl,
- 24:43Speaker 3: but losing anyway, I digress.
- 24:45Speaker 2: That's Jim Sorge's time to shine.
- 24:47Speaker 3: That was that you're right. That was Jim Sorge's time.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Good memory by you. Um, but yeah, so that happens. We're,
- 24:56Speaker 3: we're used to that. We've, reluctantly been okay with that
- 25:01Speaker 3: in the NBA and NFL. Are we going to be
- 25:03Speaker 3: okay with that in November in college football? Like think
- 25:07Speaker 3: about rivalry week, Tyson. What if Ohio state, Michigan, what
- 25:12Speaker 3: if Ohio state is locked in the number one overall
- 25:14Speaker 3: seed in a 2014 playoff the week before the game,
- 25:19Speaker 3: as they call it over there, Ohio state, Michigan. And
- 25:22Speaker 3: they're like, all right, we're locked in. We got to
- 25:26Speaker 3: keep our guys healthy. starters you're sitting in a rivalry
- 25:31Speaker 3: game and the, maybe the biggest rivalry game in the country, right?
- 25:35Speaker 3: What if the big 12 finally, Brett, your marketing company
- 25:39Speaker 3: finally come to their senses and put the holy war
- 25:41Speaker 3: on rivalry week and Utah locks in a top four seed,
- 25:46Speaker 3: or let's just say, cause we're this all hypothetical. Anyway,
- 25:49Speaker 3: they lock in the number one overall seed and they're like,
- 25:53Speaker 3: you know what? We can't risk injury. This game against
- 25:57Speaker 3: BYU has now become a meaningless game.
- 26:00Speaker 4: We're going to play. Bird Ficklin's going to start, if
- 26:03Speaker 4: it were this season. Bird Ficklin's going to start. You
- 26:05Speaker 4: know what?
- 26:06Speaker 3: Brandon Rose is going to start the game. Third string quarterback,
- 26:10Speaker 3: Brayden Pagan, you don't need to play. Way Sean Parker,
- 26:14Speaker 3: go ahead and sit this one out. Like, that'd be
- 26:18Speaker 3: terrible for college football. And that's something that we might
- 26:21Speaker 3: see in November.
- 26:24Speaker 4: We could see some load management.
- 26:26Speaker 3: While there will, will also be like a matchup, like
- 26:29Speaker 3: you're talking about this week, Mississippi state LSU, bottom half
- 26:33Speaker 3: of the top 25. There, there will be games at
- 26:37Speaker 3: the end of the season like that, that all of
- 26:39Speaker 3: a sudden, okay, this is one I need to tune into.
- 26:41Speaker 4: This got a lot of high stakes.
- 26:42Speaker 3: The teams are going to be up for this game
- 26:45Speaker 3: because the loser maybe misses out on the playoff winner
- 26:48Speaker 3: secures a spot.
- 26:50Speaker 8: Sure.
- 26:50Speaker 3: But then the biggest games you got second and third stringers,
- 26:54Speaker 3: maybe like, double-edged sword there this week.
- 26:57Speaker 2: You got Ohio state in Indiana, 2014 playoff. We know
- 27:00Speaker 2: they're probably both in, whereas, you know, the loser, if
- 27:03Speaker 2: the loser gets blown out in this game, you're going
- 27:06Speaker 2: to have to play with, especially with Ohio state already
- 27:08Speaker 2: having a loss in Indiana, not looking quite like the
- 27:10Speaker 2: way they did last year. I mean, if somebody gets
- 27:13Speaker 2: blown out in that game where they're going to have
- 27:15Speaker 2: to play while the rest of the way to get
- 27:16Speaker 2: a playoff spot.
- 27:17Speaker 3: So, so the potential for load management is something that
- 27:20Speaker 3: would be really bad for college football. Um, But the
- 27:26Speaker 3: good things are the quote-unquote middle class, which BYU and
- 27:30Speaker 3: Utah are in most years, then not. They get more
- 27:35Speaker 3: access to the playoff. They're going to play games and
- 27:37Speaker 3: meaningful games in December. Play for a potential national championship
- 27:42Speaker 3: in December. Well, so far, haven't had that chance, right?
- 27:48Speaker 3: Potentially better games in September.
- 27:51Speaker 4: More ranked on ranked matchups in September.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Cause you don't have as less, less fear of what's
- 27:56Speaker 3: going to happen if you lose those games and more
- 27:59Speaker 3: potentially more meaningful games in November. But then that, that
- 28:02Speaker 3: comes with the drawbacks of 24 too many.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Is that too many teams?
- 28:07Speaker 6: Right.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Are we taking, are we saying.
- 28:12Speaker 3: You just decent teams get in now, decent teams can
- 28:15Speaker 3: play for a chance at a national championship now, like not,
- 28:19Speaker 3: good and great teams.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Now you just have to be decent. Like that's not
- 28:23Speaker 4: a great thing.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I don't certainly downgrades the accomplishment of reaching the playoffs,
- 28:27Speaker 2: you know, with 12 teams, you know, you reach the playoffs.
- 28:29Speaker 2: That's a great accomplishment. That's something that, you know, is
- 28:32Speaker 2: worth celebrating where if it's you for team 22 in
- 28:35Speaker 2: the playoffs, like, all right, we're in, but so is
- 28:38Speaker 2: So are 23 other teams.
- 28:39Speaker 3: How great of an accomplishment is it really? Did you
- 28:41Speaker 3: really earn it, right? It's a great point by you.
- 28:44Speaker 3: And then we talk about, could there be load management
- 28:46Speaker 3: at the end of the season? We've never seen that
- 28:48Speaker 3: in college football before. That'd be terrible. And so many
- 28:54Speaker 3: more other unintended consequences, I guess. But here's the thing
- 28:57Speaker 3: that will happen. The power brokers in college football, all
- 29:01Speaker 3: the conferences, Power 4 conferences, all the schools, everyone's going
- 29:07Speaker 3: to get it. everyone's going to get more money. So
- 29:12Speaker 3: it's going to get, that's all that matters to them.
- 29:14Speaker 3: It's getting pushed through. And honestly, I'm open to just
- 29:19Speaker 3: seeing how it plays out as much as I would
- 29:22Speaker 3: prefer it to be at tops, a 16 team field,
- 29:25Speaker 3: or just keep it at 12 forever. Don't dilute things
- 29:29Speaker 3: too much. Keep it a rare thing, a great accomplishment
- 29:33Speaker 3: to make the playoff and, and the, And the absolute
- 29:36Speaker 3: best teams have a chance in national championship not just
- 29:39Speaker 3: these decent and solid teams that's that's how I would
- 29:43Speaker 3: prefer it to be I'm open to seeing if this
- 29:46Speaker 3: actually ends up being better than expected and you know
- 29:49Speaker 3: what and you know what if Utah and BYU get
- 29:54Speaker 3: in more often I mean that's exciting for us That's
- 29:59Speaker 3: good for people like me who cover the sport. That's
- 30:02Speaker 3: good for the fans of those programs. Certainly the Utes
- 30:06Speaker 3: fans here on the home of the Utes. That's a
- 30:09Speaker 3: good thing. So maybe that's just where we should land
- 30:12Speaker 3: on this.
- 30:13Speaker 4: And we'll see.
- 30:14Speaker 3: We still got a whole year before we know how
- 30:17Speaker 3: this is going to play out. BYU, Notre Dame tomorrow. 5.30
- 30:23Speaker 3: on ABC. Game day is there in the morning starting
- 30:26Speaker 3: at 7 a.m. You're going to have to get there
- 30:28Speaker 3: really early if you want to be one of the
- 30:30Speaker 3: people holding up a sign tomorrow. We've got an injury
- 30:35Speaker 3: update we've got to give you brought to you by
- 30:36Speaker 3: the Advocates Injury Attorneys for the Utah game. Nothing necessarily
- 30:42Speaker 3: new on the BYU side of things, but we'll tell
- 30:45Speaker 3: you what we've found out. this week about potential BYU
- 30:49Speaker 3: injuries as well. No official injury report for them because
- 30:52Speaker 3: it's not a Big 12 game. We'll do all that
- 30:54Speaker 3: and more coming up next in about three minutes on
- 30:58Speaker 3: the Sean O'Connell Show. James Peterson filling in for OC
- 31:01Speaker 3: on Utah's number one sports talk.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Your home of the Utes and your home for football.
- 31:04Speaker 4: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:08Speaker 1: You tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 31:12Speaker 1: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show, Hour One, rolling along here. I'm doing
- 31:30Speaker 3: a Utah Advocates injury update, brought to you by the
- 31:34Speaker 3: Advocates Injury Attorneys. Here on the Sean O'Connell Show, were
- 31:40Speaker 3: you injured in an accident? Doesn't have to be a
- 31:42Speaker 3: car accident. Car, motorcycle, did you slip and fall? Get
- 31:49Speaker 3: hit by something as you're walking on the street? Did
- 31:52Speaker 3: you trip somewhere? All of a sudden you got hospital
- 31:54Speaker 3: bills you got to deal with potentially, or you just
- 31:57Speaker 3: got nagging pain from something that just won't go away
- 32:00Speaker 3: because of some kind of accident, again, auto or otherwise.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Don't know if you have a case. You don't even
- 32:08Speaker 3: have to be going, man, is there someone I can
- 32:12Speaker 3: sue for this? No, you don't even have to be
- 32:14Speaker 3: thinking that way. Just do you have a case? Do
- 32:16Speaker 3: you have a need for a financial need to get
- 32:21Speaker 3: some of this pain or injury taken care of somehow?
- 32:26Speaker 3: And you still have the means for it right now.
- 32:28Speaker 3: And you're wondering, hey, do I have a legal case
- 32:30Speaker 3: on this? Call the Advocates, 801-355-5550 or visit UtahAdvocates.com.
- 32:32Speaker 7: They....
- 32:38Speaker 3: Don't get anything from you. They don't collect a fee
- 32:41Speaker 3: from you unless they win. So calling them and asking
- 32:46Speaker 3: if you have a case, that's free. That's a free consultation.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Getting the, they tell you you got a case. They
- 32:52Speaker 3: start working on that for you. They, they file something
- 32:56Speaker 3: for you in the courts. They get that going for you.
- 32:58Speaker 3: They talk to the insurance companies that may or may
- 33:01Speaker 3: not be withholding some money from you that you need
- 33:04Speaker 3: to take care of your, the, uh, Accident that you're
- 33:08Speaker 3: in whether it's your car that needs repairs or you
- 33:10Speaker 3: again You're just hurt somehow not in a car accident
- 33:13Speaker 3: and you need you need help with your medical bills
- 33:16Speaker 3: or whatever They don't charge you for any of that
- 33:20Speaker 3: unless you win the case So there's no reason not
- 33:24Speaker 3: to give them a call just to see if you
- 33:26Speaker 3: do have a case get that free consultation and let
- 33:30Speaker 3: them Advocate for you. That's the Utah advocates injury attorneys
- 33:35Speaker 3: and You didn't deserve to be an accident, but you
- 33:37Speaker 3: do deserve an advocate. Update to the official Big 12
- 33:43Speaker 3: football availability report, injury report.
- 33:47Speaker 4: No, nothing new for Utah. J.C.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Hart, cornerback, is still out. Preston Pitts, the linebacker, is
- 33:54Speaker 3: still listed as doubtful. Colorado, it looks about the same
- 33:59Speaker 3: to me. Still, just like I said yesterday, still only
- 34:03Speaker 3: one notable player on the injury report. And that's Lamont
- 34:07Speaker 3: Lester Jr. He's still listed as questionable. He is their
- 34:11Speaker 3: sack leader, and he's second on the team in tackles
- 34:14Speaker 3: for loss. Everyone else on the injury report, not really
- 34:18Speaker 3: key players for Colorado. A lot of people listed as out.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Lester listed as questionable.
- 34:25Speaker 2: He's a big deal.
- 34:26Speaker 3: If he can't play, that's even more reason for optimism
- 34:30Speaker 3: for the Utes. And then the good news for the
- 34:32Speaker 3: Utes is, obviously, you don't want to see anybody injured.
- 34:34Speaker 4: But J.C.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Hart, Preston Pitts, those are guys who have not played
- 34:37Speaker 3: very much for Utah. So you certainly can get by
- 34:43Speaker 3: without those guys in a game against Colorado, especially tomorrow
- 34:47Speaker 3: night in Boulder. Something else to note here, Carson Kalfusi,
- 34:53Speaker 3: who's been playing through some kind of injury. He's been
- 34:57Speaker 3: listed as questionable the last few weeks, most of the
- 34:59Speaker 3: weeks this season. He's not on the injury report at all.
- 35:02Speaker 3: He wasn't on it yesterday. He's not on it today.
- 35:04Speaker 3: And Ike Garcia, the offensive lineman who hasn't played a
- 35:08Speaker 3: game yet this year, if I'm not mistaken. He's been
- 35:11Speaker 3: on the injury report every week this season, whether he's
- 35:14Speaker 3: out or questionable. He is not on this injury report.
- 35:18Speaker 3: So we might see Ike Garcia out there in Boulder tomorrow,
- 35:21Speaker 3: which is a big deal. Bolster this offensive line depth. And,
- 35:26Speaker 3: you know, great to hear for Ike because his career,
- 35:29Speaker 3: he's a guy who's thought to have a lot of
- 35:32Speaker 3: talent but hasn't really been able to show it. Because
- 35:34Speaker 3: his whole career thus far, this season included, he's just
- 35:37Speaker 3: been out with injuries. So hopefully we get to see
- 35:40Speaker 3: him on the field tomorrow night against Colorado. BYU, no
- 35:44Speaker 3: official Big 12 injury report because Notre Dame is not
- 35:47Speaker 3: a Big 12 team. So this is not a conference game.
- 35:50Speaker 3: So we don't have anything official. But we heard Aaron
- 35:53Speaker 3: Roderick say earlier in the week, Sione Moa is medically
- 35:57Speaker 3: cleared to play. He also said that he can't guarantee that.
- 36:01Speaker 4: He will play.
- 36:03Speaker 2: One of those game-time decisions type things. And with L.J.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Martin out, that's certainly going to be a big one
- 36:08Speaker 2: if they can get him out. Even if he's a
- 36:10Speaker 2: decoy out there. You want him to be out there
- 36:13Speaker 2: just for the threat of a solid running back back there.
- 36:17Speaker 3: It really would be huge if he can play. Especially given,
- 36:21Speaker 3: like you said, that L.J. Martin is still out. He's
- 36:24Speaker 3: not expected to be back until, if you're a BYU fan,
- 36:28Speaker 3: you're hoping the Holy War game.
- 36:30Speaker 4: But it could be longer than that.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Yeah, they're definitely shooting to get him back for that
- 36:35Speaker 2: Utah game because regardless of what happens tomorrow against Notre Dame,
- 36:40Speaker 2: BYU is going to be playing for a Big 12 championship,
- 36:42Speaker 2: and they're at least hoping that they can be either
- 36:46Speaker 2: undefeated or have one loss going into that Utah game.
- 36:50Speaker 2: There is one big story for Notre Dame involving an injury,
- 36:53Speaker 2: and that's All-American cornerback Leonard Moore. As Marcus Freeman yesterday
- 36:57Speaker 2: said that– more is expected to play after missing some
- 37:01Speaker 2: time and he is an all American cornerback. So it'd
- 37:03Speaker 2: be certainly huge for Notre Dame if he can play.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a big deal. I did not see that.
- 37:08Speaker 3: So thank you Tyson for bringing that to our attention.
- 37:12Speaker 3: Speaking of Marcus Freeman, he's on our TVs right now
- 37:14Speaker 3: on ESPN on the Pat McAfee show. Probably talking about
- 37:19Speaker 3: that in particular, but it looks like breaking down tomorrow's
- 37:23Speaker 3: game as well. So that's a big, that's two key
- 37:27Speaker 3: guys that, For each team that could end up playing tomorrow,
- 37:32Speaker 3: it sounds like Leonard Moore will play for Notre Dame.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Sione Moa, we don't know if he's going to play,
- 37:38Speaker 3: but we know that he is medically cleared to play.
- 37:40Speaker 3: He may not be ready to play, I guess is
- 37:43Speaker 3: how I would characterize that. If you're a BYU fan,
- 37:46Speaker 3: you're praying, you're hoping that Sione Moa can be out
- 37:50Speaker 3: there because we've seen what he can do when he's healthy.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Tyson, I talk to O.C. all the time, too.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I almost called you O.C., we've seen what he can
- 37:58Speaker 3: do when he's healthy, not just as a running back,
- 38:00Speaker 3: but as a kick returner, punt returner would be huge
- 38:05Speaker 3: because he's a, he's a contributor in multiple fronts for
- 38:08Speaker 3: this team. And we'll see if he, we'll see if
- 38:11Speaker 3: he ends up being available. Stay tuned to game day tomorrow.
- 38:14Speaker 3: It of course in Provo and all day leading up
- 38:19Speaker 3: to that game to see if we, we see Moa
- 38:22Speaker 3: out there. But speaking of, this BYU Notre Dame game.
- 38:27Speaker 3: I said this to you off air Tyson. I just,
- 38:29Speaker 3: I have nothing more to say about Utah, Colorado. Go
- 38:34Speaker 3: win Utah.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Like just take care of business. It's almost like playing
- 38:38Speaker 2: one of those non-conference games against a, you know, a low,
- 38:41Speaker 2: a group of five team. Like you're playing a team
- 38:43Speaker 2: from the Mac or the Sunbelt. Just take care of business,
- 38:46Speaker 2: get off to an early lead. That's one of the
- 38:47Speaker 2: things I've really liked about Utah is, is whether it's
- 38:50Speaker 2: a Ray, Ray Sean Parker touchdown, the first play from
- 38:53Speaker 2: scrimmage against Iowa state, or just a, a nice 10-play
- 38:56Speaker 2: drive to get a touchdown that first drive of the game,
- 38:58Speaker 2: that's going to be big for Utah, especially against a
- 39:00Speaker 2: Colorado team where the strength of their club is their defense.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Get out, get a couple scores early, put the pressure
- 39:06Speaker 2: on Isaac Wilson and force him to make mistakes. And
- 39:09Speaker 2: as Utah knows well, Isaac Wilson's going to give you
- 39:12Speaker 2: a few. So you've got to take advantage of that,
- 39:14Speaker 2: get a big lead at halftime, and then get the
- 39:17Speaker 2: backup some experience in the second half.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Yeah, just go take care of business. We talked about,
- 39:22Speaker 3: and if you still want to share... The things that
- 39:25Speaker 3: you need to see about... um, things that you need
- 39:30Speaker 3: to see from Utah in this game, that's how I
- 39:32Speaker 3: framed it yesterday. Look at this as a, as not
- 39:36Speaker 3: a get right game. Cause you're undefeated. There's game perfect
- 39:45Speaker 3: some things kind of game you want to you want
- 39:47Speaker 3: feel free to text those in 877-353-0700 if you got
- 39:51Speaker 3: some of those on the mind i don't have anything
- 39:53Speaker 3: more to share about this oc has been always been
- 39:56Speaker 3: really good at like what what could we what more
- 39:59Speaker 3: could we say about about utah football even in games
- 40:03Speaker 3: like this i i just don't have more to say
- 40:05Speaker 3: so let's move on to the top 10 matchup that's
- 40:08Speaker 3: happening in our state for the next few minutes here
- 40:11Speaker 3: tyson i know you're a byu fan So you're excited
- 40:14Speaker 3: about this.
- 40:14Speaker 4: That's because I'm old.
- 40:16Speaker 2: I grew up in the early 1990s, and Ty Detmer
- 40:18Speaker 2: influenced me.
- 40:20Speaker 3: End of the Lavelle era there, for sure. Glory days.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Number two, Notre Dame. Visiting number eight, BYU. We talked
- 40:28Speaker 3: about the health for both teams. I wanted to throw
- 40:32Speaker 3: just some stats at you to try to answer this question.
- 40:37Speaker 3: What chance... does BYU have without their best player, without
- 40:41Speaker 3: LJ Martin? Isaiah Glasker is another guy expected to play.
- 40:45Speaker 3: He missed last week. That's going to be a big deal.
- 40:47Speaker 3: But they still don't have LJ Martin. Scoring offense. Here's
- 40:54Speaker 3: how these two teams rank in scoring offense. Notre Dame
- 40:58Speaker 3: is number four in the country right now, according to
- 41:00Speaker 3: college football stats.
- 41:02Speaker 4: BYU is 46th.
- 41:03Speaker 3: So Notre Dame's averaging 44 points per game. BYU about
- 41:08Speaker 3: 35 points per game. Scoring defense, Notre Dame also fourth
- 41:12Speaker 3: in the country, 11 points a game. BYU eighth in
- 41:16Speaker 3: the country, 13 points a game. So much closer in
- 41:20Speaker 3: that regard of these two teams. Rush offense, BYU number 17,
- 41:24Speaker 3: over 220 yards per game. Notre Dame number 37, just
- 41:27Speaker 3: under 200 yards per game. Passing offense, Notre Dame, 37th
- 41:35Speaker 3: in the country, over 260 yards per game. BYU, 89th
- 41:39Speaker 3: in the country, about 210 yards a game. Rush defense.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Notre Dame, 3rd in the country, just under 60 yards
- 41:46Speaker 3: a game. BYU, 10th at about 80 yards per game.
- 41:50Speaker 3: So much closer there. Again, defense, they are close here. Pasty,
- 41:56Speaker 3: Notre Dame, 12th, over 150 yards a game.
- 41:58Speaker 6: BYU, 24th.
- 42:02Speaker 3: About 175 yards a game. Total offense, Notre Dame 27th, 450,
- 42:07Speaker 3: about almost 460 yards a game. BYU, just over 430
- 42:12Speaker 3: yards a game at 44th in the country. Total defense,
- 42:16Speaker 3: Notre Dame is number one in total defense, 214 yards
- 42:20Speaker 3: a game. BYU is seventh, 254 yards a game. So
- 42:24Speaker 3: if you only look at the defensive stats, the main
- 42:27Speaker 3: defensive stats, Tyson, you... a BYU fan, other BYU fans,
- 42:32Speaker 3: you got to feel like BYU is going to be
- 42:34Speaker 3: able to go toe to toe with the Irish.
- 42:36Speaker 4: It's when you look at the offense, Notre Dame's not.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Necessarily outstanding other than scoring offense. When you break it
- 42:43Speaker 3: down to how they get their yards, they're not in
- 42:46Speaker 3: the top 10 in anything, but they're significantly higher in
- 42:51Speaker 3: most of these than, than BYU is in the country.
- 42:54Speaker 3: So that's probably where you get that 10 point line
- 42:59Speaker 3: in favor of Notre Dame. How does that make you feel?
- 43:02Speaker 2: Tyson?
- 43:02Speaker 3: Do you, do you hearing all that, knowing that your
- 43:05Speaker 3: best player, LJ Martin is out. Do you feel like
- 43:09Speaker 3: this is a game that know that BYU can still
- 43:11Speaker 3: win or at least keep it really close?
- 43:14Speaker 2: I almost have a feeling the defense is going to
- 43:16Speaker 2: keep them in the game. You know, you talk about
- 43:18Speaker 2: this being a moment of truth game for BYU, but
- 43:21Speaker 2: it's also a big game for Notre Dame considering who
- 43:24Speaker 2: they've played. You know, Wisconsin gave them a pretty good
- 43:26Speaker 2: test for a half. North Carolina gave them a really
- 43:28Speaker 2: good test for about two and a half quarters. Obviously,
- 43:30Speaker 2: Bill Belichick had a good game plan for them, and
- 43:33Speaker 2: I think there was some weather involved in that game.
- 43:35Speaker 2: The big thing, though, for Notre Dame is their balanced offense.
- 43:38Speaker 4: C.J.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Carr, obviously he can throw the ball about as well
- 43:41Speaker 2: as anybody in the country. They've got a three-headed monster
- 43:45Speaker 2: in the backfield, does Notre Dame. They use three different
- 43:47Speaker 2: running backs about equally. They don't have that one superstar
- 43:50Speaker 2: like they had last year, obviously the first-round pick of
- 43:53Speaker 2: the Arizona Cardinals.
- 43:54Speaker 3: I know Jeremiah Love this year, but C.J. Carr has
- 43:56Speaker 3: looked to be a Heisman candidate.
- 43:58Speaker 2: For BYU, they need to find a way to get
- 44:00Speaker 2: Notre Dame to be one-dimensional. They've got to find a
- 44:03Speaker 2: way to stop the run and force Notre Dame to
- 44:05Speaker 2: beat them with a pass. But even then, BYU is
- 44:07Speaker 2: going to have to stop a really good receiver in
- 44:09Speaker 2: Jordan Faison, who seems to be Notre Dame's top receiving
- 44:14Speaker 2: target and certainly a future pro. So this is certainly
- 44:17Speaker 2: going to be tough for BYU. They're going to have
- 44:18Speaker 2: to find a way to steal a possession somewhere. Kalani
- 44:21Speaker 2: Satake likes to be aggressive on fourth down, and he
- 44:24Speaker 2: really has had no success in fourth down situations, but
- 44:27Speaker 2: at some point, whether it's a surprise onside kick, BYU's
- 44:30Speaker 2: going to have to find a way to steal a
- 44:31Speaker 2: possession and try to win the game that way and
- 44:35Speaker 2: see if they can keep it a 17-10 type of game,
- 44:38Speaker 2: because if it's a lower scoring game, Bear Bachmeier has
- 44:41Speaker 2: proven that he can just take the team down the field,
- 44:44Speaker 2: and he had a pretty good passing game this past
- 44:47Speaker 2: week against Iowa State, so BYU can hang in there,
- 44:50Speaker 2: but LJ Martin is the difference maker. And if you're
- 44:52Speaker 2: a Utah fan, that would definitely be the equivalent of
- 44:56Speaker 2: Utah losing way Sean Parker.
- 44:57Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 44:58Speaker 2: That would certainly hurt Utah. And it certainly has hurt BYU.
- 45:01Speaker 4: It absolutely, it absolutely would.
- 45:04Speaker 3: I it's these kinds of reasons, obviously a school like
- 45:08Speaker 3: Notre Dame, that's, that's number two in the country. That's
- 45:11Speaker 3: been in the top five all season was preseason top five.
- 45:16Speaker 3: They obviously have, a much more top end talent than
- 45:21Speaker 3: BYU as well, but that's talent doesn't win games, right?
- 45:24Speaker 3: That it helps you win games, but talent alone does
- 45:27Speaker 3: not win games. I mean, Utah fans know this about
- 45:29Speaker 3: playing with USC in the same conference as USC and
- 45:32Speaker 3: beating them most years in the PAC 12, right? But
- 45:37Speaker 3: the talent, there's a gap there just because Notre Dame's
- 45:41Speaker 3: Notre Dame, Marcus Freeman's tenure so far, especially has they've
- 45:46Speaker 3: gotten them in the national championship conversation every year. Once again,
- 45:52Speaker 3: there's also the injury to LJ Martin, but also you,
- 45:56Speaker 3: even with a healthy LJ Martin, there's only one of
- 45:59Speaker 3: these games that these stats I just read off factor
- 46:02Speaker 3: into that. They did not have LJ Martin when you're
- 46:05Speaker 3: talking about BYU and yet Notre Dame has the advantage
- 46:09Speaker 3: in all of them, except for rushing yards per game,
- 46:12Speaker 3: which A little bit of a surprise with Notre Dame
- 46:14Speaker 3: because they just had the best running back in the nation, right?
- 46:18Speaker 3: But they also just lost the best running back in
- 46:20Speaker 3: the nation last year. Takes a minute to replace a
- 46:25Speaker 3: guy like Jeremiah Love, for sure. But you kind of
- 46:28Speaker 3: expected as big a deal, as much as the running
- 46:33Speaker 3: game is factored into their offense the last few years
- 46:35Speaker 3: under Marcus Freeman, you expected it to be higher. You
- 46:39Speaker 3: expected it to be higher than 37th in the country
- 46:41Speaker 3: so far in that one. but they're better than BYU
- 46:46Speaker 3: in every other category there. That's why the line is
- 46:50Speaker 3: where it is probably, in addition to the fact that
- 46:53Speaker 3: Notre Dame just gets the benefit of the doubt, that
- 46:56Speaker 3: they're one of those programs that get the benefit of
- 46:58Speaker 3: the doubt against just about anybody that BYU just doesn't
- 47:02Speaker 3: at this point. I don't think, I would venture to say,
- 47:08Speaker 3: feel pretty good about BYU playing about Notre Dame not covering,
- 47:12Speaker 3: about BYU making this a one-score game, but I don't
- 47:17Speaker 3: feel that great about the Cougars coming out on top.
- 47:19Speaker 3: If LJ were playing, I'd feel much better. BYU's at home.
- 47:25Speaker 3: They're also a top-ten team. Their defense is just as
- 47:29Speaker 3: stout as Notre Dame's is, and like you said, Tyson
- 47:31Speaker 3: is going to keep them in the game. I think
- 47:34Speaker 3: you nailed it, though. They're going to need the defense
- 47:37Speaker 3: probably to do more than keep.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Them in the game.
- 47:38Speaker 3: They're going to need them to come up with some
- 47:40Speaker 3: turnovers and kind of turn the game probably to make
- 47:43Speaker 3: this happen. We'll see if they can do that. I,
- 47:46Speaker 3: right now I'm feeling like Notre Dame comes out on
- 47:49Speaker 3: top on this. I'm, I'm hoping BYU does though, because
- 47:53Speaker 3: pull for the local teams, right? But also this, that'd
- 47:57Speaker 3: help Utah in the, in the holy war matchup. How,
- 48:02Speaker 3: if BYU is undefeated, they're probably a top five team.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Utah goes and beats a top five team and stays undefeated. If,
- 48:09Speaker 3: if they're able to beat, Houston next week, get it
- 48:12Speaker 3: done against Colorado tomorrow night.
- 48:16Speaker 4: Beat Cincinnati, obviously, the week after that. After Houston.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Helps Utah's resume.
- 48:21Speaker 4: It helps it.
- 48:22Speaker 3: I mean, you're all of a sudden Utah's a national
- 48:24Speaker 3: championship contender if you beat a top five BYU team.
- 48:27Speaker 3: If BYU's between 10 and 15 with a loss, maybe
- 48:32Speaker 3: a lopsided loss to Notre Dame, which I don't think
- 48:35Speaker 3: is going.
- 48:35Speaker 4: To happen, but could.
- 48:35Speaker 3: According to the, you look at the betting line, it
- 48:38Speaker 3: could end up being a lopsided loss. That's not quite
- 48:43Speaker 3: as good of a win for Utah if they beat
- 48:45Speaker 3: them in the Holy War at Rice Eccles Stadium.
- 48:48Speaker 2: And with Big 12 non-conference matchups when you're facing big teams,
- 48:52Speaker 2: it's almost like the Big 12's image and reputation is
- 48:54Speaker 2: on the line in part in these games. For BYU,
- 48:56Speaker 2: I think that you look at those two losses where
- 48:59Speaker 2: they just got overwhelmed by Texas Tech. That's probably the
- 49:02Speaker 2: worst case scenario for BYU is that they just get
- 49:04Speaker 2: overwhelmed by speed and power and athleticism from Notre Dame,
- 49:08Speaker 2: but You know, BYU probably is going to hang in there.
- 49:10Speaker 2: Three key factors, though, for BYU. They're going to have
- 49:13Speaker 2: to find a way to do well on third down,
- 49:16Speaker 2: both offensively and defensively. If they're going to take those calculations.
- 49:20Speaker 2: risks on fourth down, they're going to have to be
- 49:21Speaker 2: successful with that, and they're going to have to find
- 49:24Speaker 2: a way to slow down Notre Dame's running game. If
- 49:25Speaker 2: Notre Dame can run the ball, BYU's probably got no
- 49:28Speaker 2: chance to win. Absolutely.
- 49:31Speaker 3: So there you go. That's 5.30 again tomorrow on ABC.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Game day live from BYU's campus in Provo. starting at
- 49:39Speaker 3: 7 a.m. Check that out tomorrow. Broadcast on ESPN, of course,
- 49:45Speaker 3: for game day. And we'll have a Sunday night football
- 49:49Speaker 3: preview coming up next. We've got Packers-Cowboys. This was thought
- 49:53Speaker 3: to be a Micah Parsons revenge game at first, or
- 49:57Speaker 3: that was the hope to be it, that it will be.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Micah Parsons is not going to play, though, but still.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Two of the most storied franchises in the NFL going
- 50:06Speaker 3: at it on Sunday night. We'll give you a Sunday
- 50:09Speaker 3: night football preview. And then at noon, we chat with
- 50:12Speaker 3: Dan Sorensen of Ute Zone on a Ute Zone Friday,
- 50:16Speaker 3: not a Ute Zone Wednesday. You're on a football Friday
- 50:18Speaker 3: on Sean O'Connell Show. James Peterson filling in. Utah's number
- 50:21Speaker 3: one sports talk. Your home of the Utes. Your home
- 50:23Speaker 3: for football. ESPN 700. This is the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Your home of the best inside of your Utes. Let's
- 50:33Speaker 1: get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 50:37Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. All right.
- 50:44Speaker 3: Sunday night football preview NFL before we... Welcome in Dan
- 50:49Speaker 3: Sorensen of Ute Zone for a Ute Zone Friday. We
- 50:52Speaker 3: weren't able to do Ute Zone Wednesday this week because
- 50:54Speaker 3: Devin Danpeer had to do edition with Devin live at
- 50:59Speaker 3: 1130 on Wednesday, which is usually when we do when
- 51:03Speaker 3: we catch up with Sammy Mora or Dan Sorensen. So
- 51:06Speaker 3: we're going to do a Ute Zone Friday in a
- 51:08Speaker 3: few minutes here. But first, a Sunday night football preview.
- 51:11Speaker 3: This is brought to you by Southern Steer Butcher and
- 51:14Speaker 3: Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn. Southern Steer Butcher. Do a tailgate
- 51:21Speaker 3: for your watch party at home this week since the
- 51:23Speaker 3: Utes games in Boulder. Head out to Southern Steer Butcher
- 51:28Speaker 3: in Saratoga Springs. It's at the new Redwood Square on
- 51:31Speaker 3: Redwood Road out in Saratoga Springs. Worth the drive, but
- 51:34Speaker 3: also you can visit southernsteer.com and check out their selection online.
- 51:42Speaker 3: But it's definitely worth the drive if you are not
- 51:45Speaker 3: in Utah County, if you're not in the Lehigh-Saratoga Springs area.
- 51:49Speaker 3: to go check out Southern Steer Butcher. It's your neighborhood
- 51:54Speaker 3: butcher shop, old-fashioned neighborhood butcher shop, but with a modern feel,
- 52:00Speaker 3: a modern twist to it, out at Southern Steer Butcher
- 52:04Speaker 3: in Saratoga Springs.
- 52:06Speaker 4: Sunday night football preview.
- 52:07Speaker 3: It's Cowboys at the Packers, a classic NFL rivalry matchup,
- 52:14Speaker 3: two-storied programs, of course, programs, franchises. Talking college football for
- 52:19Speaker 3: the whole first hour. Got to get the right terminology here.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Two-storied franchises, Lambeau Field. It's at 620 on NBC on
- 52:28Speaker 3: Sunday night. Packers are 3-2. Cowboys are 2-3. The Cowboys,
- 52:34Speaker 3: if you recall, they're coming off one of the most head-scratching,
- 52:39Speaker 3: unbelievable losses of the NFL season so far, Tyson, as
- 52:43Speaker 3: they lost to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers. last
- 52:47Speaker 3: Thursday night, 24 to 16. So they need to get
- 52:53Speaker 3: right against the Packers on Sunday night football. This is
- 52:57Speaker 3: not going to be a Micah Parsons revenge game. The
- 53:00Speaker 3: new Packer, you remember, out, it was an ACL tear
- 53:05Speaker 3: at the end of last season.
- 53:06Speaker 2: I believe so.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Or middle of last season. He's still out with that.
- 53:10Speaker 3: He did say, earlier this week that if it was
- 53:13Speaker 3: the super bowl, he'd be playing. So that means that
- 53:15Speaker 3: he's got to be close to being able to return.
- 53:18Speaker 3: But the fact that this is a regular season game,
- 53:20Speaker 3: he's not going to, he and the team are not
- 53:22Speaker 3: going to push, push it out and get him risk
- 53:25Speaker 3: further injury, re-aggravation, anything like that by coming, coming to
- 53:30Speaker 3: play maybe too soon. So maybe next week, maybe the
- 53:33Speaker 3: week after we see Micah Parsons return, but not against
- 53:36Speaker 3: his former team.
- 53:38Speaker 4: Dallas Cowboys.
- 53:39Speaker 3: So that's a bummer. That would have been a great
- 53:41Speaker 3: thing to watch here. Packers are three and two. Like
- 53:43Speaker 3: I said, they've been, I mean, what a three and
- 53:46Speaker 3: two record would suggest Tyson. They've been kind of hit
- 53:48Speaker 3: and miss this year. Jordan love has underachieved for the
- 53:51Speaker 3: most part, but they're over 500 because they absolutely smashed
- 53:58Speaker 3: their biggest rival, the Chicago bears in a revenge game
- 54:01Speaker 3: for them. They went Owen three against the bears last season,
- 54:04Speaker 3: including in that playoff game in the wildcard round where
- 54:07Speaker 3: the bears came back to beat them. Um, they took
- 54:11Speaker 3: it to them. He had 367 yards, two touchdowns, no picks.
- 54:16Speaker 3: He went 25 for 31. So that was quite the
- 54:19Speaker 3: get right game for Jordan love. They win 31 to seven.
- 54:23Speaker 3: So the Packers riding in on a high Cowboys riding in.
- 54:26Speaker 2: On a low.
- 54:27Speaker 4: How do you feel about this one?
- 54:28Speaker 7: Tyson?
- 54:28Speaker 2: Well, the Packers looked outstanding against the Bears, and it
- 54:30Speaker 2: was certainly surprising because you thought the Bears were going
- 54:32Speaker 2: to win one for Mike Dick, who passed away last week.
- 54:36Speaker 2: With the Packers, it almost seems like they get off
- 54:38Speaker 2: to these slow starts for a few games of the season.
- 54:41Speaker 2: For whatever reason, Jordan Love always seems to be a
- 54:43Speaker 2: quarterback that's better in the second half of seasons than
- 54:46Speaker 2: he is in September. It's like a typical Green Bay quarterback.
- 54:49Speaker 2: When the temperature drops, Jordan Love's production just all of
- 54:52Speaker 2: a sudden elevates, and that was certainly something the Packers
- 54:54Speaker 2: needed as they had gotten off to a really slow
- 54:56Speaker 2: start the first four games. And as for the Cowboys,
- 55:01Speaker 2: I thought their defense was going to be good. I
- 55:02Speaker 2: think everybody thought that this was going to be a
- 55:04Speaker 2: much improved Cowboys defense. It hasn't quite materialized as of yet,
- 55:09Speaker 2: and I think they're just going to have to hope
- 55:12Speaker 2: to make some progress. It almost seems like with a
- 55:15Speaker 2: few more losses, Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, will
- 55:19Speaker 2: be on the hot seat. So this is certainly going
- 55:20Speaker 2: to be an interesting game.
- 55:21Speaker 3: Players only meeting, I believe, they had this between their losses.
- 55:27Speaker 3: against Tampa and this game, too, sometime in there.
- 55:30Speaker 2: It's never a good thing. But when you lose the
- 55:32Speaker 2: Tampa Bay, especially with as bad as Tampa Bay has been,
- 55:35Speaker 2: you have to find a way to do something.
- 55:37Speaker 3: So that usually isn't a good thing when you have
- 55:40Speaker 3: a players only meeting, especially this early in the season.
- 55:43Speaker 3: So things not looking good for the Cowboys, things feeling
- 55:47Speaker 3: much better for the Packers after smashing their rival, the
- 55:50Speaker 3: Bears on Sunday. Jordan Love again, almost perfect. 25 of 31.
- 55:55Speaker 3: You throw it over 30 times and you complete it
- 55:58Speaker 3: 25 times.
- 55:58Speaker 4: That's incredible.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Those receivers are making some amazing catches. That was a
- 56:02Speaker 2: game that we got locally, and so I watched a
- 56:04Speaker 2: lot of that game. Between Christian Watson and some of
- 56:07Speaker 2: the other receivers, they're making some outstanding catches.
- 56:09Speaker 3: Yeah, so maybe the Packers keep a good thing going here,
- 56:13Speaker 3: keep the good vibes going here at home against the
- 56:15Speaker 3: Cowboys in a bit of a rivalry game just because
- 56:17Speaker 3: they're two of the most storied franchises. going back a
- 56:20Speaker 3: long time in the league. So that's your Sunday night
- 56:24Speaker 3: football preview. Again, 620 kickoff Sunday on NBC. And it's
- 56:30Speaker 3: brought to you by Southern Steer Butcher and Murdoch Ford
- 56:34Speaker 3: Santa Quinn. Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn, by the way, you're
- 56:37Speaker 3: driving on I-15. Look to your right as you get
- 56:40Speaker 3: by the old red barn there. You see a big
- 56:43Speaker 3: Ford dealership. That's the Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn. It's an
- 56:47Speaker 3: absolutely huge.
- 56:50Speaker 3: Building a lot of selection there. Head over there for
- 56:54Speaker 3: a new vehicle. If you're in the market for a
- 56:56Speaker 3: new vehicle at Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn.
- 56:59Speaker 2: I might have to get out there after the show.
- 57:01Speaker 2: One bit of NFL news. Looks like Lamar Jackson's been
- 57:03Speaker 2: ruled out once again for this week. So the former
- 57:05Speaker 2: Ute Tyler Huntley will get a start.
- 57:06Speaker 3: Tyler Huntley going to start again. Thank you for bringing
- 57:09Speaker 3: that to our attention. Maybe we can talk more about
- 57:10Speaker 3: that in the Daily Dump. But next we have Dan
- 57:13Speaker 3: Sorensen from Ute Zone. to talk more about this Utah-Colorado
- 57:18Speaker 3: game coming up tomorrow night for a Ute Zone Friday
- 57:22Speaker 3: with Dan Sorensen. That's next in about three minutes here
- 57:25Speaker 3: on the Sean O'Connell Show. James Peterson filling in for
- 57:27Speaker 3: OC on Utah's number one sports talk in your home
- 57:29Speaker 3: of the Utes, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 57:31Speaker 4: You're listening to the.
- 57:38Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN
- 57:43Speaker 1: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Starting hour two of the Sean O'Connell show in perfect
- 58:00Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell show fashion, OC style.
- 58:03Speaker 4: We're over ten minutes late, but that's okay.
- 58:06Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 58:08Speaker 3: We're going to reset here with Dan Sorensen from Ute Zone.
- 58:12Speaker 3: No Ute Zone Wednesday this week. Devin Dampier, addition with Devin,
- 58:16Speaker 3: bumped our guy Dan Sorensen to a Ute Zone Friday
- 58:20Speaker 3: on this football Friday. Dan, I hope you don't take
- 58:22Speaker 3: that personally.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 58:25Speaker 8: Thank you. And, and, and, and how could I, I mean, no, no,
- 58:30Speaker 8: we don't have 50,000 people in a stadium, you know,
- 58:33Speaker 8: lining up to watch me pontificate about the youth. So
- 58:37Speaker 8: I suppose I can feed my time to Devin.
- 58:41Speaker 3: I think we did that to Sammy earlier this year too. We,
- 58:44Speaker 3: but it was for Morgan Scali. So you guys, the
- 58:46Speaker 3: only reason we bump you guys is for the head
- 58:48Speaker 3: coach or the starting quarterback.
- 58:50Speaker 4: How about that?
- 58:51Speaker 6: You know, I'll take that all day long.
- 58:55Speaker 3: Utes Insider, Utes Own segments, part of those Utes Insider

- 59:03Speaker 3: new furnace installed for $ 29. 99 or as low as $ 29
- 59:04Speaker 3: a month with approved credit financing. terms and conditions apply,
- 59:11Speaker 3: and it's a limited time offer. That's Mountain Home Services. Dan,
- 59:17Speaker 3: I already said earlier in the show, I already admitted,
- 59:19Speaker 3: I just have nothing more to say about this game,
- 59:23Speaker 3: Utah and Colorado. But we'll come up with some things
- 59:26Speaker 3: to say here, or I'll ask you the question so
- 59:29Speaker 3: you say the things.
- 59:30Speaker 4: How about that?
- 59:31Speaker 3: It just feels like it's that much of a lopsided
- 59:35Speaker 3: matchup where it's like, just take care of business, Utah.
- 59:38Speaker 4: How do you see this?
- 59:40Speaker 7: I mean, yeah.
- 59:41Speaker 8: And on paper, absolutely. It's a lopsided matchup and, and,
- 59:45Speaker 8: and it's, it's really funny. This is, this is one
- 59:48Speaker 8: of those weird games, right? It's, it's double digit point spread.
- 59:52Speaker 8: There are some weird undercurrents in the sense of some
- 59:56Speaker 8: of the things that, that, that are the, the, the game,
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: the game behind the game type of stories, right? So
- 1:00:03Speaker 8: everybody of course is talking about Isaac Wilson and, and,
- 1:00:06Speaker 8: you know, facing off against his old team and, And look,
- 1:00:12Speaker 8: Isaac's an interesting guy in the sense that Scali talked
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: about the fact that he's got arm talent. We saw
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: last week he put up, what, 290 yards on Texas Tech. Now,
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: he did throw three interceptions, and they were pretty bad.
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: Two of those were an ended double or triple coverage,
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: and one of them was... the guy was standing flat
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: footed in the end zone when he caught it. Like,
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: I just don't understand how that wouldn't even happen. I
- 1:00:39Speaker 8: don't think I've ever seen a zero yard return pick
- 1:00:43Speaker 8: six before, at least not that I can remember. And
- 1:00:46Speaker 8: so the three interceptions were bad, but he did also
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: make some really good throws, some throws on the run.
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: He showed some escape ability. And so he's got it
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: in him. So is the question is, can, can Isaac Wilson,
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: can he motivate himself and get up enough to play
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: the kind of game where, where he can keep his
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: team in it? Now, if he's the Isaac Wilson that
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: played for the Utes for two years, the answer to
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: that is is an emphatic.
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: No.
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: But once again, it's, he's, he's not on the Utes.
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: It's a new roster. It's a new situation. He's going
- 1:01:22Speaker 8: to be motivated. And so really when you look at
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: this game overall with things like that, it's if the
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: youth take care of business and do what they're supposed
- 1:01:32Speaker 8: to do, they should win handily. But there, there are
- 1:01:34Speaker 8: those X factors, Isaac being one of them, this Colorado defense.
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: And I, and I've watched the last couple of Colorado games.
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: They're better than the point output that they've given up.
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: They are very tough at times. They can get after
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: the passer. They can make life tough on an opposing quarterback. And,
- 1:01:54Speaker 8: and so they're, this is a, this is a better
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: Colorado team than their record dictates. It's a better Colorado
- 1:02:03Speaker 8: team than even the on paper. When you look at the, the,
- 1:02:07Speaker 8: the compare the eyeball test to the, to the what's
- 1:02:11Speaker 8: on paper than that dictates. And so Utah still needs
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: to be ready for this game. If they walk into
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: that stadium and they expect to just walk away with
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: a victory because it's Colorado and because Isaac didn't look
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: very good as a youth, That is a recipe for danger.
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: But if this team does what they should do, if
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: they live the culture that they've been talking about all
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: year long, if they go in and they do their
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: job and handle their responsibility, that 15 or 14 or
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: whatever the point spread is these days, that's not going
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: to be an issue. They're going to beat it once again.
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: And obviously that's the hope and that's the expectation for
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: this Utah team talking with Devin Dampier this week, OC
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: talking with him. It sounds like that's the attitude. And
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: one of the reasons why Utah has had the early
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: success that they've had is that's the attitude that Devin
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: brings into every one of these games. Respect for the opponent.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Doesn't matter who it is. Doesn't matter if you expect
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: to beat them by three, four scores, two, three, four scores.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: You still respect them as if you, feel like you
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: don't have a chance to win this game. It's that
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: kind of professionalism that Devin in particular has felt like
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: he's brought into every game. And that should give you
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: a lot of hope that this is not going to
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: be one of those trap games with Houston coming up
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: next week, who's probably going to be ranked at Rice
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Eccles Stadium.
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: Well, and that's just it. And look, I'm not surprised
- 1:03:46Speaker 8: in the least bit that that's the kind of attitude
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: that Devin would take. He comes from, he was highly
- 1:03:52Speaker 8: under-recruited based on his college performance as a high schooler.
- 1:03:56Speaker 8: He played for a, you know, a mid tier Mexico,
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: New Mexico team that, you know, didn't they, that New
- 1:04:03Speaker 8: Mexico team didn't go undefeated. They got beat by a
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: bunch of squads. But, and, and he, so he's seen
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: the fact that even on a team that may not
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: have a winning record there, you know, himself included, there
- 1:04:15Speaker 8: are guys that can play, you know, it's, it's, it's
- 1:04:18Speaker 8: hard to get to an FBS football program. You've got
- 1:04:23Speaker 8: to have a lot of talent, even if you're the
- 1:04:24Speaker 8: worst guy on the worst team, You've got to have
- 1:04:27Speaker 8: a lot of talent. And so that commands and deserves respect.
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: And so I love that Devin is very much taking
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: that mindset. He, of all people, should know and will know.
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: And it's just that. Like, you can't have any letdowns.
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: And we've seen it over the years how many– over,
- 1:04:46Speaker 8: you know, Kyle Whittingham, who was the winningest coach in
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: the history of the program. How many times a season
- 1:04:51Speaker 8: would he have that? What the heck game where the
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: team would just come out flat against somebody that they
- 1:04:58Speaker 8: should absolutely just pound into the ground. And they would
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: either win a narrow one if they were lucky or
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: they would lose and have that just weird loss. And
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: it happened pretty frequently. And so it's one of the,
- 1:05:12Speaker 8: the tests of Morgan Scali as a coach is, can
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: he avoid those? Can he make sure that his guys
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: are up mentally and ready for the task, regardless of
- 1:05:23Speaker 8: who the opponent is, don't play to the level of
- 1:05:26Speaker 8: your opponent and go out and take care of business
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: when you're supposed to, like you said, next week, there's
- 1:05:32Speaker 8: a lot of, there's a lot at stake. in that
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: Utah Houston game, but Utah has got to beat Colorado
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: before they can have anything at stake in that game.
- 1:05:40Speaker 8: And so it's, it's the attitude and it's, it's what
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: needs to happen. And it's that respect factor. There are
- 1:05:47Speaker 8: a bunch of, you know, there are a couple of
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: ex-youths on that Colorado roster. There are a bunch of
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: guys that Utah recruited and, and guys that they would
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: have taken happily. The Williams receiver was committed to the
- 1:05:58Speaker 8: youth at one point, and he's probably the best player
- 1:06:01Speaker 8: on their team. And the font and that kid was
- 1:06:04Speaker 8: a kid that Utah wanted the safety. And so, so yeah, there, there,
- 1:06:08Speaker 8: there are guys on the roster that they would want
- 1:06:10Speaker 8: and there are guys on the roster that deserve respect. And,
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: and so, but if they, if they go out and they,
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: they own that 10 square yards around them or the
- 1:06:18Speaker 8: 10 square feet around them or the, whatever it is,
- 1:06:21Speaker 8: the phrase that they use in the program, they're going
- 1:06:24Speaker 8: to be just fine and they should win this game handily.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: So assuming that they do, assuming they win by multiple
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: scores like we expect them to, maybe in three or
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: four scores, what else, Dan Sorensen, I asked this question yesterday,
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: what else do you feel that Utah needs to do
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: besides winning the game, taking care of business, and winning
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: big like we expect them to? What are you looking
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: for specifically to say, not necessarily get right, because they're undefeated,
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: there's nothing to get right in that regard, but maybe perfect?
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: in a game against Colorado that you expect to win
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: big in?
- 1:07:02Speaker 8: Yeah, look, if you look at some of the things
- 1:07:05Speaker 8: that maybe they struggled with last week, I'd love to
- 1:07:08Speaker 8: see some improvement on that. Can you get home to
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: the quarterback? They had no sacks against Marshall for Kansas.
- 1:07:16Speaker 8: And look, Marshall, a really elusive guy. Isaac Wilson has
- 1:07:21Speaker 8: his moments where he can be elusive. He's not quite
- 1:07:23Speaker 8: as fluid an athlete as as Marshall was, but being
- 1:07:27Speaker 8: able to get home and, and, and get the sack. And,
- 1:07:30Speaker 8: and there's a lot of talk about the defensive ends
- 1:07:33Speaker 8: and whether they've gotten the sack or not. And, and,
- 1:07:36Speaker 8: and look, that's, that's something that should be improved. I'd
- 1:07:39Speaker 8: love to see one of those edge guys be able
- 1:07:40Speaker 8: to get, get home. Finally, you can't have a, a
- 1:07:43Speaker 8: season where your edge rushers aren't, aren't getting home and
- 1:07:47Speaker 8: getting those sacks, but getting the sack, completing the play
- 1:07:50Speaker 8: in the backfield is one thing being better at the 50,
- 1:07:54Speaker 8: 50 balls. Once again, Marshall, he was so good at
- 1:07:59Speaker 8: escaping the Utah pass rush, and then he'd put it
- 1:08:01Speaker 8: up there and see, yes, there were times where he
- 1:08:04Speaker 8: dropped dimes, where only his receiver could get it. And frankly,
- 1:08:08Speaker 8: we size of Wilson do that last week against Texas
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: tech too. So he's capable But a lot of the
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: 50-50 balls that Utah lost out on last week, can
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: the defensive back come down with it? Can they knock
- 1:08:22Speaker 8: it down? Can they make that big play when they
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: need to? Now, last week they did. Can they make
- 1:08:29Speaker 8: it earlier in the drive so that the opponent's not
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: driving all the way down the field until you get
- 1:08:36Speaker 8: the fourth down stop in the red zone or you
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: get the– the, the turnover in the, in the, in
- 1:08:43Speaker 8: the red zone, that kind of thing. So those are
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: the things that I'd like to see, especially on the
- 1:08:47Speaker 8: defensive side of the ball on the offensive side of
- 1:08:50Speaker 8: the ball would love to see this team continue to,
- 1:08:54Speaker 8: to show, to, to be efficient in the way that
- 1:08:57Speaker 8: they're moving the ball. I love the balanced attack. I
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: love what way Sean's bringing to the table. If you,
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: Utah does need to establish the run, Colorado is going
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: to sell out to stop the run. If the youth
- 1:09:09Speaker 8: are still able to run on this defense, if they're
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: able to loosen them up over the top and and
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: make those plays when they're there, those kinds of things
- 1:09:17Speaker 8: are important. And then the third thing I would say is,
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: is there have been in the last three games times
- 1:09:24Speaker 8: where there's been mental walls, where it's been a driver
- 1:09:27Speaker 8: to or a full quarter, but would love to see
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: the team stay sharp until the game is well in hand.
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: You know, it's one thing if they're up 30 in
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: the fourth quarter and, and things get a little bit sloppy, but,
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: but No mental lapses in terms of the penalties that
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: kill drives, the penalties that extend drives, the being out
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: of position, the not lining up. If Colorado goes tempo,
- 1:09:56Speaker 8: the not getting set in time so that you're half
- 1:09:59Speaker 8: a step out. And that kind of a thing is
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: a big deal. It's the difference between those 50-50 balls
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: that Kansas was completing. If you're half a step off...
- 1:10:10Speaker 8: you know, if, if you're not half a step off, you're,
- 1:10:12Speaker 8: you're going to stop that completion. And so those are,
- 1:10:16Speaker 8: there are a lot of little things that this team
- 1:10:19Speaker 8: can work on. And it's, and that's a great thing
- 1:10:21Speaker 8: in my opinion, that look, they're, they're undefeated. They're five
- 1:10:25Speaker 8: and Oh, they've beaten every team by double digits. So
- 1:10:28Speaker 8: they've dominated every opponent they've had. And There's still things
- 1:10:33Speaker 8: that need to be worked on. There's still things that
- 1:10:35Speaker 8: need to be improved upon. And as long as they
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: can stay sharp and continue to do those things and
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: get better at those things, especially the ones I just
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: rattled off, that's what you want to see out of
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: this team. And so how sharp can you get when
- 1:10:48Speaker 8: you get ready for that gauntlet? Because Houston at home,
- 1:10:51Speaker 8: Cincinnati on the road, BYU at home, that is a
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: tough stretch that this team is going to need to
- 1:10:59Speaker 8: be ready for.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: And Arizona after that.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: It doesn't let up after the Holy War, for sure.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: You mentioned at the end there just not having those
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: offensive lulls, not having those mental mistakes, those stretches where
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: they go three and out a bunch of times or
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: have a turnover and some three and outs. It feels
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: like they've had at least one of those every game
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: that's almost been a quarter long or maybe just over
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: a quarter. It felt like it was the second quarter
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: last week against Kansas. The other games of this season,
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: it felt like it was mostly the third quarter's And
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: that's the thing that I'm watching closely. And then I
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: also love what you said about just finishing plays on defense,
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: whether it's finishing pass rush and getting home and taking
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: down the quarterback, getting some sacks from the defensive ends
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: or whoever. In my opinion, obviously we expect defensive ends
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: to be dominant in sack numbers, but as long as
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: you're getting to the quarterback, it doesn't really matter if
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: it's a defensive end or someone else.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: Just get there and finish the job.
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: But also.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: I love that you mentioned, like, finishing plays in the
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: secondary too, turning some of these PBUs into interceptions or
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: these passes that are just barely completed, turn those into PBUs.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: It feels like we're nitpicking, but it feels like the
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: defense has kind of just been just below the standard of, like,
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: we're going to make huge plays and set our offense up. in,
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: in great positions, or we're going to score ourselves on defense.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: It feels like they're just behind that standard to start
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: this season. This feels like a great game to maybe
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: get back up to that standard.
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:12:42Speaker 8: And that's exactly what you want to see. And well,
- 1:12:45Speaker 8: and it's funny because, and we are nitpicking, this is
- 1:12:47Speaker 8: the number one defense scoring defense in the big 12. And, and,
- 1:12:51Speaker 8: and when you look at the things that actually matter yet, yes,
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: they gave up 333 passing yards to the quarterback last week. And, and,
- 1:12:58Speaker 8: And at the same time, they held the, the, the,
- 1:13:01Speaker 8: the top rate, the top rushing team in the big 12,
- 1:13:04Speaker 8: the 60 yards looked at the top rushing defense in
- 1:13:07Speaker 8: the conference. They they're at, they're giving up 10 points
- 1:13:10Speaker 8: a game. They're once again, a lead in third down
- 1:13:13Speaker 8: conversion defense. And those are the things that matter points
- 1:13:16Speaker 8: per game, the third down conversion defense, the red zone
- 1:13:19Speaker 8: scoring defense. Like those are the stats that really, really matter. And,
- 1:13:23Speaker 8: and the teams that are the highest at that tend
- 1:13:26Speaker 8: to be the teams with the best records. And so
- 1:13:28Speaker 8: they're getting to some great results and they're doing it
- 1:13:32Speaker 8: while still needing reasons to, to improve to your point.
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: And so, yeah, it's, As long as we can continue
- 1:13:42Speaker 8: to see that continuous improvement, as long as we can
- 1:13:44Speaker 8: continue to see these guys buying in and showing up and,
- 1:13:49Speaker 8: and going out and making plays, this is going to
- 1:13:51Speaker 8: be a really dang good football team all year long. And, and,
- 1:13:55Speaker 8: and once again, it's, it starts with Colorado again, like
- 1:13:58Speaker 8: everything that they've done to this point kind of doesn't
- 1:14:01Speaker 8: count each week is its own little, little, separate entity.
- 1:14:07Speaker 8: And so they need to go out and they need
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: to prove themselves once again. And as long as they
- 1:14:12Speaker 8: have that attitude, as long as they continue doing that,
- 1:14:15Speaker 8: this is a team that's going to go places this season. Yeah.
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: And undefeated so far, we expect to remain them to
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: remain undefeated and have a dominant win tomorrow night in Boulder.
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: Before I let you go, Dan, we're talking with Dan
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: Sorenson from mute zone. Our Utes Insider segment is brought
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: to you by Mountain Home Services here on the Sean
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: O'Connell Show. James Peterson filling in. Before I let you go,
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: got a top ten matchup in the state tomorrow. BYU
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: welcoming Notre Dame to Lavelle Edwards Stadium. How do you
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: see this one playing out? BYU seems to be getting healthier,
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: but still no LJ Martin. I don't know that Notre
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: Dame should be a double-digit favorite, but I also, looking
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: at the stats... Weighing the fact that BYU's best player
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: is not playing, I can see why these sportsbooks are
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: making Notre Dame a 10.5-point favorite. But BYU's at home.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: We know how tough they are at home. We know
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: how good that defense is. They can keep them in
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: games and make plays for them to make this a
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: much closer game if not pull off this upset. Do
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: you think BYU has a legitimate chance to pull off
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: the upset?
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: I mean, of course they do. Look, we've learned time
- 1:15:32Speaker 8: and time again that every time some Ute fan decides
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: to declare the demise of BYU, they're like cockroaches in
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: the nuclear war. You cannot count against them. They find
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: a way to survive. They find a way to survive. to,
- 1:15:52Speaker 8: to make something happen. So of course they can come
- 1:15:55Speaker 8: out and, and, and, and win this game and, and,
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: and make Notre Dame look silly. And, and, and if
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: they do, you know, that's a, it's great for the
- 1:16:02Speaker 8: big 12 conference. I, it's not great for Utah fans
- 1:16:05Speaker 8: or their egos, especially the ones that, that want BYU
- 1:16:09Speaker 8: to lose. And so I, and I totally understand that anybody.
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: In that camp, that's the best thing about rivalries, right?
- 1:16:16Speaker 8: That it absolutely is. So, but, but yeah, this is
- 1:16:19Speaker 8: a look, I don't count out Connie's talkie ever. I
- 1:16:23Speaker 8: don't count out a discount. What he can do. Do
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: I expect Notre Dame to win this game?
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: 100%.
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:16:28Speaker 8: And I, and even cover on this one, but And
- 1:16:34Speaker 8: to your point, like L.J. Martin's not in. Let's see
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: what happens. Let's see if they continue, if BYU continues
- 1:16:40Speaker 8: to stay healthy. Let's see whether the depth of Notre
- 1:16:44Speaker 8: Dame makes a difference. But yeah, I... An upset wouldn't
- 1:16:50Speaker 8: shock me. I don't expect it, but it wouldn't shock me.
- 1:16:54Speaker 8: I've learned a long time ago, you just don't count
- 1:16:58Speaker 8: out BYU. If you think they're going to go away,
- 1:17:00Speaker 8: they're never going to go away. It's a fact of life.
- 1:17:03Speaker 8: I'm 50 years old. They've never gone away. I don't
- 1:17:08Speaker 8: expect it to happen now, but I do expect Notre
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: Dame to come out on top.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Even in that nine-game win streak.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: recent win streak in the rivalry matchup that Utah had
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: in BYU's independence era, Utah's Pac-12 era. I mean, even
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: then when you, when it was on paper, Utah's dominating
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: this team, those are one point games. Those are one
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: score games that Utah was winning most of those years.
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: You know, few exceptions there. And so even when you
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: look at it from that regard, Utah, The cockroach survival
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: analogy you brought up is perfect for that because you're like, okay,
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: every year almost every Utes fan in that win streak
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: was like, oh, we got this. We're going to dominate BYU.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: And then BYU brings the doubt, right? They get to
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: last play of the game. They have a chance to
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: win the game. So, yeah, you cannot count out this team,
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: especially under Kawane Satake for sure.
- 1:18:05Speaker 8: No, he's got them bought in. They're playing good football.
- 1:18:09Speaker 8: They're going to be a good football team the whole year.
- 1:18:11Speaker 8: And we'll see what happens with what they do with
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: the Irish. But like I said, I still expect the
- 1:18:18Speaker 8: Irish to win. And if they don't, if BYU comes
- 1:18:22Speaker 8: out with the upset, then fingers crossed that they're both
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: undefeated by the time that BYU comes into Salt Lake
- 1:18:28Speaker 8: City because it's going to be the hottest game in
- 1:18:31Speaker 8: all of college football that week.
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: And it's... There's... No other way to think about it, Dan,
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: a win for BYU helps Utah, assuming Utah can stay
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: undefeated and beat BYU in that rivalry game, in that
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: Holy War game.
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: It just helps Utah's resume.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: Makes them from a playoff contender to a potential national
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: title contender, the way that they're looked at.
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: It would be a top five BYU team if that's
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: the case.
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: So if you're a Utah fan, you don't have to
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: root for BYU. But just know in the back of
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: your mind, if BYU wins, it's a good thing for Utah.
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: So it's not the worst thing in the world if
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: they pull off this upset. Dan, thank you so much
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: for taking the time, man, for coming on, bringing the insight.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: We'll talk with you and Sammy again next week.
- 1:19:20Speaker 8: Thanks for having me on. Have a great weekend, and
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: have a good game this weekend. Yeah.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: That's Dan Sorensen, Ute Zone publisher on a Ute Zone Friday. Typically,
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: we do Ute Zone Wednesdays. Devin Dampier ended up having
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: to be live on a Wednesday this week. So bumped
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: our guy, Dan Sorensen. Happy that he had the time
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: to come on just now on a Friday. Daily Dump
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: is next. We've got an ALCS game tonight. We'll react
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: a little bit more to the Brewers getting the World Series,
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: sweeping the Dodgers. There's a lawsuit, an NCAA lawsuit against
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: a governor out there. You've been hearing that in Tyson's update.
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: PFL fights tonight. And much more to get to in
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: the Daily Dump. Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: and Cooling. That's next on the Sean O'Connell Show. James
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: Peterson filling in on a Friday on Utah's number one
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: sports talk and your home of the Utes.
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: with the duck.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: All right, Daily Dump brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: and Cooling. Look for the truck with the duck if
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: you have any Plumbing needs, they even do excavation, any
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: kind of where they got to dig into the ground
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: outside to fix your pipes that go outside the house
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: a little bit. They can do advanced jobs like that
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: as well. And also HVAC, heating and cooling, part of
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: the name now as well, the truck with the duck.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: Appreciate their support.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Game four of the ALCS tonight in Cleveland. The Guardians
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: hosting the Rays. Guardians lead the series two games to one.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: We got coverage starting at 530 on your home of
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: the MLB playoffs. That's right here on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: The Brewers already in the World Series. We talked about
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: this at the top of the show. Tyson and I did.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: They sweep the Dodgers. This is their first National League pennant.
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: Because the last time they were in the World Series
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: was 1982. They were an American League team, the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: Was that Robin Yount?
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: That was Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Cecil Cooper, Ben Ogilvie,
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Gorman Thomas and company.
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: Got it. I woke up going, Robin Yount, that was
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: a Brewers guy, right?
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Long time Brewer, over 3,000 hits. Oddly enough, he made
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame, but he was only a three-time All-Star.
- 1:22:05Speaker 7: Really?
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: So he must have been a much better second half
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: of the season player.
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Easily made the Hall of Fame at over 3,000 hits,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: but was only a three-time All-Star.
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: I did not know that about Robin.
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: Back then, especially, and it's really been up until the last, what, 10,
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: 15 years. And the 3,000 hit mark is still one
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: in the 500 homers mark, which we may not see
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: for a long time. 300 wins, the pitcher we may
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: not see ever again. Those were the counting stats that
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: said if you get to that mark, you're a Hall
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: of Famer automatically.
- 1:22:37Speaker 7: And so.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: Only a three-time All-Star, but he got to 3,000 hits.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: That might have been what it was. And he was
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: a two-time MVP.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: One of the times he was an MVP was a
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: center fielder, and the other time he was a shortstop.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: Got it.
- 1:22:50Speaker 3: So a versatile guy, two-time MVP. Another two-time MVP still
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: looking to get in the Hall of Fame. Let's get Dale.
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: Murphy in the Hall.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: Absolutely. His peak five or six years were as good
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: as anybody's.
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: But anyway, Brewers, they sweep the Dodgers. They're in the
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: World Series. They're waiting on the winner of the Guardians
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: and the Rays. We talked about this a little bit yesterday,
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: and I brought it up to OC too, Tyson. Obviously,
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: Brewers' best record in the majors all year long. They
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: finished a couple games ahead of the Dodgers in that regard.
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: They're going to have home field advantage in the World Series.
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: They should be favored to win this series, not just
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: because they're the first team in, but because they've been
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: the best team in baseball. They don't have the star power,
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: but none of these teams left have huge star power.
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: Jose Ramirez is probably the biggest star left in these
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: playoffs playing for Cleveland. Maybe not the best player left,
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: but he's the biggest name recognition, if not the best player.
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: So it's not going to be star power that wins
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: this World Series. It's going to be things like making contact,
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: getting on base, not striking out, not popping out, moving
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: runners along, hitting the timely home run, the timely hits,
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: getting the timely RBIs, having great starting pitching, and probably
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: more realistically with the way that today's game is, particularly
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: in the playoffs, having good shut a shutdown bullpen. That's
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: the Brewers MO, but it's also the Rays and the
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: guardians MO. So it's almost going to be like two
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: teams looking in the mirror, whoever ends up winning out
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: of the American league. And I think that will make
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: for a great world series.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: And if we were to come up with a list
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: of the top 30 managers and all of baseball, top
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: three might be the three teams still remaining. Pat Murphy's
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: been unbelievable with the Brewers in his third season. Steven
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: Vogt has just made Cleveland a winner almost from day
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: one when he joined them two or three years ago.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: And Kevin Cash, who I think is the best manager
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: in all of baseball in Tampa. So the top three
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: managers are still going on. So you've got managers that
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: really know what they're doing, and they get the most
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: out of their teams.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and Dave Roberts is probably in the top four,
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: if you make it four. And that was the LCS
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: teams we had this year. So that's a really good
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: part of what's going on here and a really good
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: part of the storyline of whoever makes it out of
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: the American League and into the World Series.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: So there you go. Game four, Guardians Rays tonight, ALCS.
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: Winner of that series gets, we know now, the Milwaukee
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: Brewers in the World Series. There's going to be at
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: least tonight's game and one more game in that series.
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: And we won't have game five because that's going to
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: be going on during Utah's game tomorrow night against Colorado.
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: So we'll have Utah football.
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: But if it gets to game six and game seven,
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: you'll hear that on Monday and Tuesday night, respectively, here
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: on your home of Major League Baseball and the MLB playoffs,
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. This story you put in
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: your update, Tyson, a fascinating story in Ohio. The NCAA
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: is suing. The governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, because he
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: recently signed an executive order allowing players from the 2022
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: freshman class this year would have been their fifth year
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: if they would have been granted a fifth year of eligibility.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: He signed an executive order that says, okay, these guys
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: get a fifth year. I'm the governor and so it
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: shall be written, so it shall be done. But of course,
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: since it's an Ohio executive order and it's not a
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: federal executive order by by president Trump, it's only applying
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: to the state colleges and universities in Ohio. So you're
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: talking about Ohio state, the Ohio Bobcats and whatever other
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: public universities they have in, in Ohio. He's saying, okay,
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: you guys are eligible to play in this, in, uh,
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: in for those schools. If you're from the 2022 freshman class,
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: you will get a fifth year eligibility because I'm the
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: governor and I get to say that you will.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: Now, this is happening.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: All that's fine, except for this is happening when the
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: Ohio Court of Appeals already denied a preliminary injunction, undid
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: a preliminary injunction for these this class of players.
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: Like weeks ago.
- 1:27:31Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: So the governor is saying, you know what? I don't
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: care what the court says. we're going to, I'm going
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: to circumvent this and just make it law myself with
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: an executive order. So the NCAA Charlie Baker is like, sorry,
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: you don't, we don't believe you get to do that.
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: And so that's where this lawsuit's coming in.
- 1:27:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: Ohio, Ohio gets five years. Everybody else gets four. That
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: seems fair.
- 1:27:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: We're just going to create rules. That just shows you
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: how little power the NCAA has these days.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: You know, any state can just come up with any rule.
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: It feels like, you know, Texas techs trying to come
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: up with a bunch of rules and, You know, the
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: SEC teams, I mean, LSU's trying to get G League
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: players eligible for the basketball season and get guys who
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: are in NFL training camps eligible. It's almost like the
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: Wild West and then some with the NCAA.
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: It really is.
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: I hope that the Ohio courts or the federal judges,
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: wherever this case is going to be heard, I hope
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: that they side with the NCAA in this case because
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: they're it re this is a whole new thing the
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: courts have said we're not siding with these players We've
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: seen courts side with these players before. In my opinion,
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: too often recently. We have not seen courts decide that
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: we're going to rule against them and then a governor say,
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: I'm going to take things into my own hands.
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: After the courts have already ruled.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: This is a whole new thing So I hope that
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: the NCAA is able to prevail in this. But to
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: your point, Tyson, there's no real reason to believe that
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: that's realistic. The NCAA is taking so many losses lately.
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: They got a win in this one from the courts.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: Now they have to go back to the courts to
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: undo this executive order. We'll see what happens. The lawsuit
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: just filed today. Real quick, just for our guy OC
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: who's in Chicago calling PFL fights, want to make sure
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: you know about what he's doing. You get a chance
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: to see him and watch him call some MMA fights
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: for the PFL four o'clock today is when the preliminary
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: card starts. I believe that parts on ESPN plus. And
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: then I think around, I saw around nine o'clock Eastern
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: is when the main card will be or nine o'clock
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: mountain time, excuse me, 11 Eastern is when the main
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: card is going to take place on ESPN too.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: So no OC here on the radio, but you will have.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: A chance to, Catch him on ESPN Plus and ESPN2
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: calling PFL fights from Chicago. So be sure to tune
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: into that. This one's really interesting. There's a really interesting
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: story in the NBA. We'll get to that later. We've
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: got to get to Lee Sterling. But real quick, Tyson,
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: I want to get your insight on a huge hockey story.
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: Brady Kachuk, brother of Matthew Kachuk, star in his own right,
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: Brady is. Now they're teammates in Florida, of course. He
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: became just the third player in NHL history to have
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: back-to-back natural hat tricks. Six goals in two games, Tyson.
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: He joins Hall of Famer Pavel Burr and current Flyers
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: forward Noel Achari, if I'm saying that right. He also
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: bested his Hall of Fame father, Keith, who at the
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: most had five goals in a two-game span, and the
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: most Matthew, his teammate and brother, who's a future Hall
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: of Famer in his own right, the most he's had
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: in a two-game span is four. So he's now the
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: leader in the Kachuk household, right? But tell me about
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: the difference between a hat trick and a natural hat trick,
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: and just put this in perspective, just how big a
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: deal it is, back-to-back hat tricks and natural hat tricks
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: at that for Brady Kachuk.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: Well, a natural hat trick occurs when a player scores
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: three consecutive goals in a game without any other player
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: from either team scoring. So you basically score three goals
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: in a row as opposed to scoring like the first goal,
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: third goal, and fifth goal for your team. Whereas that'd
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: just be a hat trick, whereas in his case, he
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: just gets three in a row for the natural hat trick.
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: And so it's a little bit difficult.
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: Even harder to do speaks to why there's only two
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: other guys that have done it in two games.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Pavel Bure was about as fast as anybody with
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: the Vancouver Canucks. I mean, he was about as fast
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: as I think any NHL player I've ever seen. It's
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: interesting to see Brady Kachuk and Matthew Kachuk reunite because
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: they're different style players. Brady Kachuk is just like his father,
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: Keith Kachuk, as they're both power forwards. I mean, Keith
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: Kachuk was like 6'5, 230 pounds. He was like a
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: Mack truck out there. But he had great hands and
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: can score with the best of them. And Brady Kachuk
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: is a lot more like Keith Kachuk, whereas Matthew Kachuk
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: is a little bit smaller and kind of plays a
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: different style of hockey.
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: Physicality is the name of the game for all three
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: of them, though, right? Certainly with Brady and Matthew. I
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: was not an NHL fan at the time when their father, Keith,
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: was playing, but I've got to imagine he was laying
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: in the wood like Matthew and Brady do.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: He did that, and yet he was scoring like 40
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: or 50 goals a season. So he was like one
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: of those ultimate power forward type of guys. Get in
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: front of the net, and you had a really tough
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: time moving him.
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: That's why he's a hockey Hall of Famer, right? There
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: you go.
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: So we got Lee Sterling coming up next from Paramount Sports.
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: We'll discuss some of the lines for some of the
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: biggest games in college and pro football with Lee in
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: about three minutes here on the Sean O'Connell Show. James
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: Peterson filling in. This is Utah's number one sports talk
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: in your home of the Utes, your home for football.
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: We are winding down our number two with one of
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: our favorites on a Friday, on a football Friday, Lee
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: Sterling from Paramount Sports. looking for a bounce back week,
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: still six or seven weeks. And our college football 50
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: unit game of the year goes live on Saturday. That's
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: for paramount sports. Lee, welcome in.
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: Oh, thanks so much for having me a big weekend,
- 1:33:41Speaker 7: big weekend where you guys are for college football.
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely. We got a top 10 team.
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: We'll get into the BYU Notre Dame game, Utah got
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: a very winnable game against Colorado, but you got to
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: make sure you don't have a, trap game looking ahead
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: to Houston next weekend for sure. Let's start with a
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: huge one nationally. You got last year's Big Ten championship
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: game rematch, Ohio State, Indiana, Ohio State, my Buckeyes looking
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: for revenge against the Hoosiers last year.
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: How do you see this one?
- 1:34:21Speaker 7: Well, revenge is one thing, but I still think Ohio
- 1:34:24Speaker 7: State has two weaknesses here, and no one talks really
- 1:34:27Speaker 7: about either. Their pass rush, only nine sacks in six games.
- 1:34:31Speaker 7: I mean, they've led going into the fourth quarter, even
- 1:34:33Speaker 7: in the game against Texas, and they only had one
- 1:34:36Speaker 7: sack against Ball State, one against Kent State, and a
- 1:34:40Speaker 7: big fat donut against Maryland. So they're going to have
- 1:34:45Speaker 7: to do better in this game. Got to put some
- 1:34:47Speaker 7: pressure here on the Indiana passing game, and Well, Jeremiah Smith,
- 1:34:52Speaker 7: there's no one even close to him. I mean, he's
- 1:34:54Speaker 7: by far the best player in college football, but they
- 1:34:57Speaker 7: have not been able to find a number two receiver.
- 1:35:00Speaker 7: No one's resurfaced here. And all these five stars are
- 1:35:03Speaker 7: playing like two and three stars here. And I give
- 1:35:06Speaker 7: Indian a lot of credit. They were going into the
- 1:35:08Speaker 7: wind of 30, 35 mile an hour wind. for two
- 1:35:12Speaker 7: of the four quarters last week, and they held on.
- 1:35:14Speaker 7: They were tough, and then when they needed the right
- 1:35:17Speaker 7: play call, Kurt Cignetti, two fourth-down calls that were masterful.
- 1:35:22Speaker 7: I think the wrong team's favorite. I like Indiana, 24-23.
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: I don't like to hear that as a Buckeyes fan, Lee.
- 1:35:28Speaker 7: Sorry.
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: Ohio State favored by three-and-a-half points. But, yeah, I.
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: I don't disagree with what you're saying, though, the defense,
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: which has carried them over the last three, four years.
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: And when they've been great teams, the defense has been
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: one of the best defenses, if not the best defense
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: in the league. It doesn't feel like it's quite that
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: strong this year. And I'm just not a huge fan
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: of Julian saying he doesn't. He leaves a lot to
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: be desired in my opinion there. So I could see
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: Indiana coming out on top. I don't want it to
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: happen though, but we'll see what happens. Should be a
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: good one on big noon set up big noon kickoff
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: 10 AM here locally on Fox air force is favored
- 1:36:08Speaker 3: by a point against UNLV.
- 1:36:11Speaker 7: So I think air force, you know, there's certain teams
- 1:36:14Speaker 7: out there like Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt playing close game after
- 1:36:18Speaker 7: close game. And then finally Ole Miss blew their doors
- 1:36:21Speaker 7: off last week. I think Air Force is a team,
- 1:36:25Speaker 7: they just don't have much talent at all. Now they're
- 1:36:29Speaker 7: playing the second game without their starting quarterback. Everyone usually
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: plays against the team the first game. They weren't playing
- 1:36:36Speaker 7: much competition last week. Now they go up against a
- 1:36:39Speaker 7: UNLV team that's all of a sudden red hot. And
- 1:36:42Speaker 7: Air Force has real trouble with teams that have mobile
- 1:36:46Speaker 7: dual threat quarterbacks. And that's Jackson Arnold here. Blowout City,
- 1:36:51Speaker 7: UNLV getting a point. Are you kidding me? They're going
- 1:36:55Speaker 7: to win this game here at 38-20.
- 1:36:56Speaker 9: Wow.
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a big going against the spread there for
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: picking UNLV there. So I know OC usually likes to end,
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: since we're home of the Utes, end with the Utah game.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: But because the other team in the state here is
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: a top-10 matchup, that's the one I want to end
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: with as far as the college games go. So let's
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: talk about Utah here first. favored by 15.5 points at Colorado.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: I've been talking about this game as kind of like
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: it's such a huge talent gap. Colorado feels vastly inferior
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: to Utah. It feels like not a get-right game because
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: Utah's undefeated. What do you got to get right? It's
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: more like a perfect things kind of game. So how
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: do you see this one playing out? It feels like
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: Utah should win big just like they're favored to.
- 1:37:46Speaker 7: Right. At some point this season, Utah is going to
- 1:37:49Speaker 7: have to play something resembling a good defense. As the
- 1:37:53Speaker 7: number one scoring and number one yardage offense, they literally
- 1:37:57Speaker 7: cannot have done much better. Colorado's defense is very slightly
- 1:38:03Speaker 7: in the top half of the rankings. Not good, but
- 1:38:05Speaker 7: not bad. The Utes, three big games on deck. I
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: think this might be a spot here where they take
- 1:38:12Speaker 7: their foot off the gas here and maybe give up
- 1:38:15Speaker 7: a couple big plays here. I think they're going to
- 1:38:17Speaker 7: win 32-20, but I think the line here, 15.5, just
- 1:38:22Speaker 7: a little bit too much.
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: So that'd be the first game all year that they
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: will not cover if that turns out to be the case.
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: But you still see them winning by a couple of
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: scores probably, just not quite.
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: 16, 15, 16 points.
- 1:38:35Speaker 7: Yeah, 10 to 14 points. What happens is when you
- 1:38:39Speaker 7: start getting ranked higher, They just say add a couple
- 1:38:42Speaker 7: points to what you've got to give. It's like a
- 1:38:45Speaker 7: tariff tax.
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: Got it. That makes a lot of sense.
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: Let's look at the game of the week in the
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: NFL before we get to the Notre Dame-BYU game.
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: Bills, Raiders, Bills favored by four and a half.
- 1:38:55Speaker 9: Yep.
- 1:38:56Speaker 7: Yeah, I like the Raiders here. I think the Raiders
- 1:38:59Speaker 7: were in a really tough spot last week. After fighting
- 1:39:03Speaker 7: the Chiefs tooth and nail that fourth quarter, there's 30-something
- 1:39:07Speaker 7: points scored in the last fourth quarter. They had to
- 1:39:11Speaker 7: go east and play in a 1 o'clock Eastern game
- 1:39:13Speaker 7: against the red-hot New England team. So they were up
- 1:39:16Speaker 7: against it. Buffalo wanted the game last week. And in
- 1:39:19Speaker 7: that win, which was paramount to them, If the Rams
- 1:39:24Speaker 7: make any of those two field goals in the second
- 1:39:26Speaker 7: half for an overtime, the bills lose that game. Their
- 1:39:30Speaker 7: defense is just too weak here. I think Gentry is
- 1:39:33Speaker 7: going to have a big game, Austin Gentry for the
- 1:39:35Speaker 7: Raiders here. And I think her cousins might be able
- 1:39:37Speaker 7: to dial up some big plays on this really bad
- 1:39:41Speaker 7: Buffalo secondary room team favored. I got the Raiders pulling
- 1:39:45Speaker 7: the upset here, 28, 25. And that's your game of
- 1:39:48Speaker 7: the week.
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: So that that's your special promo on that, right? Every week.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:39:52Speaker 7: Yeah, and we'll give them a free game. We're going
- 1:39:55Speaker 7: to go with the Cowboys and Packers. Anyone wants to
- 1:39:57Speaker 7: get that game? Yeah. All they need to do is
- 1:40:00Speaker 7: call 800-400-9741. Give them the Packers and Cowboys. You talk
- 1:40:06Speaker 7: about a must-win for both teams. Packers lose this game.
- 1:40:10Speaker 7: They could be three games back of Minnesota. Little, little hint.
- 1:40:14Speaker 7: I have a feeling that the Chargers, if they lose,
- 1:40:17Speaker 7: Justin Herbert could be on the trading block in a
- 1:40:20Speaker 7: perfect scenario. Minnesota Vikings and the Cowboys. There's not going
- 1:40:25Speaker 7: to be a wild card team coming from the NFC East.
- 1:40:30Speaker 7: They got to win the division. So big game. All
- 1:40:32Speaker 7: they need to do is call 800-400-9741 to get that
- 1:40:36Speaker 7: game for free.
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: Now let's look at this top 10 matchup. here down
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: in Provo, Lee, number eight, BYU hosting number two, Notre Dame,
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: Notre Dame favored by 10 and a half points.
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: Does that feel too high to you or about right?
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: At first I thought it was too high and I
- 1:40:54Speaker 7: started studying the game and I'm like, wow, no games
- 1:40:57Speaker 7: won 16 straight games. Every game's been by double digits.
- 1:41:01Speaker 7: So you think, oh, they're going to have a close game.
- 1:41:03Speaker 7: But they had one real weakness coming into the season.
- 1:41:07Speaker 7: It took them like four games to figure it out.
- 1:41:10Speaker 7: They went through a couple different running backs. They lost
- 1:41:12Speaker 7: two running backs drafted in the first round. I can't
- 1:41:14Speaker 7: remember a team that's had that happen before. They went
- 1:41:17Speaker 7: through a couple guys, and the third guy, they finally
- 1:41:20Speaker 7: hit pay dirt here with John Eswalton. He had 120
- 1:41:23Speaker 7: rushing yards against North Carolina, 181 against Stanford. They're going
- 1:41:28Speaker 7: to be a tough out here. They're not going to
- 1:41:31Speaker 7: give up many big plays. Bear Bachmeier is great, but
- 1:41:33Speaker 7: without the top running back and the receivers, not getting
- 1:41:37Speaker 7: a whole lot of separation, hitting on big plays. This
- 1:41:40Speaker 7: is a really good defense. BYU might have the hardest-hitting defense,
- 1:41:44Speaker 7: but Notre Dame, certainly a top-five defense. It's going to
- 1:41:47Speaker 7: be fun, but I think Notre Dame is the right
- 1:41:49Speaker 7: side here. I think they pull away late here. Winning cover, 28-13.
- 1:41:52Speaker 7: Winning cover, all right.
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: I know a lot of our listeners, Utes fans, don't
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: mind hearing that, Lee. But not the greatest thing for
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: the Big 12, and kind of secondarily maybe not the
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: greatest thing for Utah if BYU's not able to pull
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: out this game.
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: But again, it's rivalries. Utes fans don't care about that.
- 1:42:15Speaker 7: No, not at all. Not at all. And the only
- 1:42:18Speaker 7: thing that would be better is if it was next year,
- 1:42:20Speaker 7: then every team, as long as they're nine and three,
- 1:42:22Speaker 7: everyone gets in. So that's a stretch, a story for
- 1:42:25Speaker 7: another day.
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: What, what do you think about this 14, 2014 playoff?
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: I should say that that's looks like it's going to
- 1:42:33Speaker 3: go into effect next year.
- 1:42:35Speaker 7: I think it's horrendous. It's really diminishes the regular season. And,
- 1:42:41Speaker 7: you know, having teams 13 to 24 play opening weekend
- 1:42:47Speaker 7: of the playoffs, not good. So anyone wants to check
- 1:42:50Speaker 7: us out, just one place, ParamountSports.com.

- 1:43:00Speaker 3: you get some extra money there. Lee, thank you so
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: much for your time.
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: Have a good weekend.
- 1:43:06Speaker 7: Okay, sounds good.
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: That's Lee Sterling, Paramount Sports. All right, coming up next,
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: we've got Coordinator's Corner. Kevin McGiven, the offensive coordinator, a.k.a.
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: Mac G.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: O.C.
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: Talked with him earlier in the week.
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: We'll bring that to you for the first time, bring
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: that to the air for the first time next in
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: about three minutes here on the Sean O'Connell Show. James
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: Peterson filling in on Utah's number one sports talk and
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: your home of the U. It's ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: Let's dive into this week's matchup in the coordinator's corner
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: of the Sean O'Connell Show. OC chats with the coordinators
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: every week of the Utah football season. On your home
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: All right, it is that time of the week again
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: here on the Sean O'Connell Show coordinator's corner. We go
- 1:43:55Speaker 5: back and forth between offense and defense. This week we're
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: lucky enough to catch up once again with With offensive
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: coordinator for your Utah football team, Kevin McGiven, more affectionately
- 1:44:05Speaker 5: referred to as Mac G.
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: Coach, welcome back.
- 1:44:09Speaker 6: To the show.
- 1:44:09Speaker 4: How are you?
- 1:44:11Speaker 7: Good. Doing good.
- 1:44:11Speaker 6: I appreciate it.
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: Your Utes are 5-0.
- 1:44:15Speaker 5: You are a top-ranked offense in multiple categories, and you're
- 1:44:21Speaker 5: on the road this week.
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: At the university of Colorado.
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: Uh, we'll take a look back at Kansas, take a
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: look ahead to Colorado, but overall, when you're going back
- 1:44:30Speaker 5: and you're studying tape and, you know, we haven't spoken
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: to you since the bi-week, uh, you know, grade out
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: your overall offense and your overall feeling on how this
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: has come together relatively quickly.
- 1:44:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:44:43Speaker 6: Um, you know, I was talking to the, to the
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: office on Monday as, as we were reviewing the game and, um,
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: There's obviously been a lot of positives, a lot of
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: really good things that we can lean into, but a
- 1:44:58Speaker 6: lot of things I think we can get a lot
- 1:45:00Speaker 6: better at, a lot cleaner executionally. I still think this
- 1:45:08Speaker 6: team has a bunch of potential that we haven't reached yet,
- 1:45:12Speaker 6: and show some examples of that, the guys of things,
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: things that we left out there, but, but a lot
- 1:45:18Speaker 6: of really good positives that have shown up over the
- 1:45:20Speaker 6: first five weeks with, you know, situational areas with third
- 1:45:25Speaker 6: down efficiency with, you know, how we've been in the
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: red zone, getting into some backup situations, you know, and,
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: and some of those, you know, came on the hills
- 1:45:34Speaker 6: of defensive stops that were awesome, but so punching it
- 1:45:37Speaker 6: out of backup situations. And then I feel like we've
- 1:45:40Speaker 6: been pretty effective with our, with our balance and distribution.
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: When you talk about the things that you're able to
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: highlight and say, Hey guys, this there's meat left on
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: the bone. We can get better at this. Can you
- 1:45:52Speaker 5: give me an example or two of what those things
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: are in your mind?
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:56Speaker 6: You know, those are always things we go through with,
- 1:45:59Speaker 6: with dev every week, you know, maybe it's a situation
- 1:46:02Speaker 6: where he kind of touches the runs, but some, some
- 1:46:05Speaker 6: things in the past name where we've, we've left some
- 1:46:07Speaker 6: things out there with, with open guys or, or everything
- 1:46:11Speaker 6: is getting a little bit, you know, disconnected in terms
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: of where a guy needs to be, or if he's,
- 1:46:17Speaker 6: if he's got a concept where he's reading on the
- 1:46:19Speaker 6: run and, and, you know, doesn't make a right decision,
- 1:46:23Speaker 6: you know, there's just, just kind of little things, little
- 1:46:26Speaker 6: nuances like that all over the place that we can,
- 1:46:28Speaker 6: that I think we can really clean up and get
- 1:46:30Speaker 6: better as, as we move forward. You know, I've been
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: effective with the, with the run game. Um, you know,
- 1:46:37Speaker 6: the times when we can sustain better, communicate better, um,
- 1:46:42Speaker 6: you know, we're, you know, targeting maybe a little bit
- 1:46:45Speaker 6: off and, um, we can fix some of those things
- 1:46:47Speaker 6: as well to even, to even clean that up and
- 1:46:49Speaker 6: make that, make that better.
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: A moment ago, you alluded to your, your team showing
- 1:46:54Speaker 5: the ability to get themselves out of the backed up situations.
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: We saw that against Kansas after a great defensive stop,
- 1:47:00Speaker 5: right on the goal line. Uh, you know, what third
- 1:47:03Speaker 5: play of the series, uh, and way Sean takes it
- 1:47:05Speaker 5: 90 yards and, and shifts the momentum in the game.
- 1:47:11Speaker 5: What makes you so good at getting out of those
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: backed up situations? And maybe more importantly, how much does
- 1:47:16Speaker 5: that affect your play calling when you're in that condensed
- 1:47:21Speaker 5: in your own end zone effectively?
- 1:47:23Speaker 6: Yeah, you really kind of shrink down to a menu of,
- 1:47:29Speaker 6: you know, maybe, seven or eight calls in, in, in
- 1:47:33Speaker 6: that situation, you know, because especially with a lot of
- 1:47:36Speaker 6: the things we do offensively, that may be a little
- 1:47:38Speaker 6: more intricate in terms of ball handling and, you know,
- 1:47:43Speaker 6: meshing with our option game or, or, or whatever it
- 1:47:45Speaker 6: may be. There's, a lot of things going on there. So,
- 1:47:49Speaker 6: you know, it can make you a little bit more
- 1:47:50Speaker 6: vanilla when you, when you get down there a little
- 1:47:53Speaker 6: bit more direct in the run game in terms of
- 1:47:56Speaker 6: just making sure you're trying to be downhill and, and
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: getting bodies accounted for, not, not cutting guys loose in
- 1:48:02Speaker 6: the backfield, but you know, but those plans are generated
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: throughout the week, just based on how we see teams playing.
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: If they're playing a little more aggressively or conservatively, then
- 1:48:11Speaker 6: that'll kind of dictate the menus as well with, with
- 1:48:15Speaker 6: some things you can do. But I think that the
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: kids have done a good job, you know, in practicing
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: those situations, understanding, um, situation football and being, being smart and, um,
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: and capitalize, you know, in terms of punching us out there.
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: So we've got to give the credit to them and
- 1:48:30Speaker 6: their execution.
- 1:48:32Speaker 5: Uh, that play where way Sean took it all the
- 1:48:34Speaker 5: way to the house was obviously a massive momentum swing
- 1:48:37Speaker 5: in the game when it had gotten a little bit tight. And,
- 1:48:40Speaker 5: There were several of those in this contest against a
- 1:48:42Speaker 5: Kansas team that I thought was, you know, they performed
- 1:48:46Speaker 5: pretty well against you guys in a way that maybe
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: surprised me, especially with Isaiah Marshall on their offensive side
- 1:48:54Speaker 5: of things. When you're looking at momentum swings in a game,
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: obviously you're so enwrapped in game plan and calling the
- 1:49:02Speaker 5: next right play. Do you have to factor in who's
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: got the momentum? Do you have to consider any of
- 1:49:07Speaker 5: that when you're calling the play down?
- 1:49:11Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think that's something that I need to
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: get a better beat on even, just kind of playing
- 1:49:19Speaker 6: the hot hand, if you will. Because I think both
- 1:49:24Speaker 6: of the last two games in Iowa State, it kind
- 1:49:26Speaker 6: of came in the third quarter, and this last game
- 1:49:30Speaker 6: came in the second quarter where there were some momentum
- 1:49:35Speaker 6: shifts in those games after a good early started Kansas
- 1:49:39Speaker 6: and good first half against, against Iowa state. And again, there,
- 1:49:44Speaker 6: you know, I think there were things there, you know, and, but,
- 1:49:48Speaker 6: but I think it's just us maintaining our focus and
- 1:49:51Speaker 6: really understanding because it's because we are pretty explosive on offense,
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: we're able to generate explosive plays that we can swing
- 1:49:57Speaker 6: momentum really quickly. If we're just dialed in and focused
- 1:50:00Speaker 6: and we don't let things compound, you know, and even,
- 1:50:04Speaker 6: even some of those in terms of momentum is, is just,
- 1:50:07Speaker 6: you know, it's, it's a killer to momentum when you
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: go out there and you're three and out, or it's
- 1:50:12Speaker 6: a one plate and then, and a turnover or something
- 1:50:14Speaker 6: like that. But, but just even, you know, I'm not
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: ignorant to the fact that you're not, you know, not
- 1:50:20Speaker 6: going to score on every single possession, but you can
- 1:50:22Speaker 6: still momentum back just by, by being methodical as well. And,
- 1:50:27Speaker 6: and just maintaining a drive, even if it doesn't result
- 1:50:29Speaker 6: in a score, you know, where it keeps the defense
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: off the field a little bit. And, and, and usually,
- 1:50:35Speaker 6: you know, when we're able to get a couple of
- 1:50:37Speaker 6: first downs in a drive, and even if it starts
- 1:50:40Speaker 6: out methodically like that, because we have been pretty explosive,
- 1:50:42Speaker 6: those usually generate scores.
- 1:50:45Speaker 5: Kevin McGiven is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: Show Coordinator's Corner on a Friday. You mentioned turnovers. The
- 1:50:52Speaker 5: team's been really good at taking care of the ball
- 1:50:54Speaker 5: against Kansas. There were a couple of turnovers. An interception
- 1:50:59Speaker 5: that was ultimately ruled a fumble that I thought was
- 1:51:01Speaker 5: a fumble in the first place, but they called an
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: interception on the broadcast, and then an actual regular interception.
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: What happened on those two plays when you go back.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: And look at them?
- 1:51:11Speaker 6: Yeah, so one came on a One came on third down,
- 1:51:15Speaker 6: you know, and Kelvin was kind of in protection. You know,
- 1:51:21Speaker 6: the guy that he was on, he ended up kind
- 1:51:24Speaker 6: of on Devin's right side trying to kind of wash
- 1:51:26Speaker 6: that by. And Devin was just trying to make a
- 1:51:31Speaker 6: move sliding to his left and then about to step
- 1:51:35Speaker 6: up into the pocket. And, you know, the guy was
- 1:51:38Speaker 6: just able to barely get a hand on him. on
- 1:51:41Speaker 6: his Jersey, you know, so I think, you know, Kelvin
- 1:51:43Speaker 6: was trying to wash him by and then it kind
- 1:51:44Speaker 6: of hooked, hooked down. He, but he was getting ready
- 1:51:46Speaker 6: to step up and throw the BP on a, on
- 1:51:48Speaker 6: a shallow that would have had a chance for a
- 1:51:51Speaker 6: conversion right there. But, um, you know, obviously didn't, didn't
- 1:51:55Speaker 6: go our way there. Um, and then, and then the
- 1:51:58Speaker 6: other one, you know, we've kind of gotten to it, um,
- 1:52:00Speaker 6: a two minute situation at the end of the half and,
- 1:52:04Speaker 6: you know, probably, probably a little bit aggressive with the
- 1:52:06Speaker 6: play call, but there was, there was some things we
- 1:52:09Speaker 6: saw with in our two minute study with their, with
- 1:52:12Speaker 6: their boundary coverage and a way we wanted to, a
- 1:52:17Speaker 6: way we wanted to attack that. And so I, you know,
- 1:52:21Speaker 6: I immediately went to a pretty aggressive call. It was,
- 1:52:23Speaker 6: it was a double post into the, into the boundary.
- 1:52:25Speaker 6: We had a kind of a smash concept to the
- 1:52:27Speaker 6: field and you know, Deb got a little bit locked
- 1:52:30Speaker 6: into kind of holding the quarter safety to the field.
- 1:52:33Speaker 6: And then, And then maybe a little bit late to
- 1:52:35Speaker 6: get back to BP where it was a little bit underthrown.
- 1:52:39Speaker 6: And then trying to make an adjustment to the ball.
- 1:52:42Speaker 6: And the defender came back and made a really nice
- 1:52:45Speaker 6: play on it. But I think the concept was appropriate.
- 1:52:48Speaker 6: What we would call a premier look for that play
- 1:52:52Speaker 6: based on what we were seeing. But again, just didn't
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: execute and capitalize in that situation.
- 1:52:57Speaker 5: I get confused when I see the underthrown deep balls
- 1:53:00Speaker 5: from Dev because then in the same game we'll see
- 1:53:03Speaker 5: a bunch go the way that they're supposed to go. And,
- 1:53:06Speaker 5: you know, I'm not enough of a quarterback guru to
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: be able to explain it one way or another.
- 1:53:10Speaker 4: I don't think it's an arm strength issue.
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: I don't know if it's a footwork issue, if it's
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: maybe a late read and trying to rush the throw
- 1:53:17Speaker 5: or whatever. But it seems like there's maybe one or
- 1:53:20Speaker 5: two each game where he floats it a little bit
- 1:53:23Speaker 5: or he underthrows it a little bit. And then most
- 1:53:25Speaker 5: of the time it goes where it's supposed to go.
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: How do you approach that? How are you guys coaching that?
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I think a couple things. You know, Dev's a
- 1:53:35Speaker 6: really innate football player. And, you know, so I think
- 1:53:39Speaker 6: there's times when he tries to play balls based off
- 1:53:42Speaker 6: leverage that he sees. You know, even in that situation,
- 1:53:45Speaker 6: he saw the corner, you know, kind of on the
- 1:53:48Speaker 6: high side of BP and probably could have used a
- 1:53:53Speaker 6: little bit more of a field to kind of throw
- 1:53:55Speaker 6: him across. the field a little bit. Um, you know,
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: but I, I think he was kind of trying to
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: bring BP back inside away from the corner and just
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: left a little bit short. And then, and then I
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: think also, you know, sometimes you get off platform a
- 1:54:08Speaker 6: little bit and maybe your feet aren't underneath you. And, and,
- 1:54:12Speaker 6: you know, so you kind of lose that power source
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: a little bit, but Dev's got the, the arm talent
- 1:54:16Speaker 6: to make all those throws when he's got his feet
- 1:54:18Speaker 6: underneath him and, and he's just letting it ride.
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: Was there a concerted effort?
- 1:54:24Speaker 5: Was there a desire in your offensive coordinator heart that you,
- 1:54:27Speaker 5: you wanted to see semi tell longer, get into the
- 1:54:30Speaker 5: end zone finally.
- 1:54:30Speaker 4: And of course we did.
- 1:54:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:54:33Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely. You know, the, the, and there wasn't, you know,
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: that was, I think a fourth and two situation, probably
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: a pretty pivotal moment in the game. And, you know,
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: so it, there wasn't any hesitation on my part when I,
- 1:54:51Speaker 6: when I made the initial call and then I kind
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: of put my talk up and I was like, well, crap,
- 1:54:55Speaker 6: what did I just do? Um, but no, but, but
- 1:55:00Speaker 6: something again that, um, you know, we've, we've been practicing
- 1:55:04Speaker 6: that for a while and it's like, you know, if
- 1:55:07Speaker 6: we have, if we have an opportunity and, you know,
- 1:55:09Speaker 6: the correct hash and the correct style of defense and, um,
- 1:55:14Speaker 6: you know, we're, we're able to manipulate that the right way, then, um,
- 1:55:18Speaker 6: then we were looking for opportunities that we could call that.
- 1:55:21Speaker 6: So I wouldn't say it was knee-jerk. There was preparation
- 1:55:26Speaker 6: that went into it. I felt like we were going
- 1:55:28Speaker 6: to get a good look for it. But it was
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: really cool to see that and get him involved in
- 1:55:34Speaker 6: that way.
- 1:55:35Speaker 5: Does Dev have the option to give on that play,
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: or is that just a play-action look?
- 1:55:41Speaker 6: He does have the option to give, and absolutely. you know,
- 1:55:45Speaker 6: it looked like the way it sorted out the way
- 1:55:47Speaker 6: Sean could have buried that in there for a touchdown
- 1:55:50Speaker 6: as well. But yeah, but it's kind of, you know,
- 1:55:54Speaker 6: when we sent, when we sent Ricky in motion from
- 1:55:57Speaker 6: that side, so we kind of created that stack look
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: and basically Dev's looking to see how the defensive adjust
- 1:56:03Speaker 6: on it. So that if he, if you see someone
- 1:56:06Speaker 6: travel or, or there's a, you know, enough of a
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: reaction to, Um, where, where BP is going to be
- 1:56:15Speaker 6: able to go pin a man player on the, on the,
- 1:56:19Speaker 6: you know, it would be the man player on semi
- 1:56:21Speaker 6: in that situation, able to pin him. Cause that's really
- 1:56:23Speaker 6: a designed more screen to throw behind the line of scrimmage. So,
- 1:56:28Speaker 6: but yeah, I guess I'll be appropriate. Look, I'm not, but, and,
- 1:56:31Speaker 6: and decided to throw that. All right. Uh, you just
- 1:56:34Speaker 6: mentioned Ricky and did a good job, did a good
- 1:56:36Speaker 6: job sneaking in those guys inside even, even further with
- 1:56:39Speaker 6: the action.
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it was great.
- 1:56:40Speaker 5: And actually, I don't know if you heard the radio call.
- 1:56:43Speaker 5: Bill Riley, voice of the Utes, called it as a
- 1:56:45Speaker 5: way Sean Parker touchdown. He got faked and thought way
- 1:56:48Speaker 5: Sean had gotten the ball and but ended up being semi.
- 1:56:52Speaker 5: Either way, it's a touchdown, which is, of course, the
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: result that you're looking for in, like you said, a
- 1:56:56Speaker 5: very pivotal moment of the game. You mentioned Ricky also
- 1:57:00Speaker 5: Ricky Johnson, five catches, 104 yards and a touchdown. Great
- 1:57:04Speaker 5: to see him have a little bit of a breakout game.
- 1:57:07Speaker 5: And at the beginning of this conversation, you mentioned that
- 1:57:09Speaker 5: there's maybe still some untapped potential of this offense. And
- 1:57:14Speaker 5: I wonder how much of that lies in, you know,
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: just guys that haven't had as many touches or have
- 1:57:20Speaker 5: had the opportunity for those breakout games. When you're saying
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: something like, Oh, there's still more here. We got gas
- 1:57:25Speaker 5: left in the tank. How much of that is there's
- 1:57:28Speaker 5: three more Ricky Johnson's potentially who could have this type
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: of a breakout game?
- 1:57:33Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's, you know, just, just, Kind of
- 1:57:38Speaker 6: the way I break it down, I guess, going into
- 1:57:41Speaker 6: a game, I think there's always your top guys that
- 1:57:45Speaker 6: you want to make sure are getting opportunities. Obviously, Weishan
- 1:57:48Speaker 6: has been a huge contributor offensively and manufactures a lot
- 1:57:55Speaker 6: of our total offense every game. It's getting Devin involved
- 1:57:59Speaker 6: certain ways. It's getting Bird involved certain ways. It's getting
- 1:58:02Speaker 6: Daniel Bray involved. certain ways, making sure BP gets his targets.
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: But the rest of those guys, you kind of just
- 1:58:10Speaker 6: leave it up to the quarterback to distribute accordingly based
- 1:58:14Speaker 6: on what he sees. And so you never know. who
- 1:58:17Speaker 6: could have a breakout game, you know, just when there's
- 1:58:20Speaker 6: a lot of different options within calls, you know, it,
- 1:58:23Speaker 6: you know, I think Arkansas game where Noah Benny had
- 1:58:27Speaker 6: it kind of like coming out in, in that game.
- 1:58:29Speaker 6: And it was, it's not necessarily that you're, you're calling
- 1:58:33Speaker 6: things any differently. It's just who the ball is finding
- 1:58:36Speaker 6: in those situations based on, based on the looks and
- 1:58:40Speaker 6: the decisions that making. And so any guy at any
- 1:58:43Speaker 6: time could have a breakout game like that. And, and,
- 1:58:46Speaker 6: So I think that's the cool part of it is
- 1:58:50Speaker 6: there's a lot of guys out there that we trust.
- 1:58:51Speaker 6: You trust the distribution of the quarterback and whoever the
- 1:58:58Speaker 6: ball finds, you trust that they're going to make plays
- 1:59:01Speaker 6: and make good on their opportunities.
- 1:59:03Speaker 5: Kevin McGiven for another minute or two here on the
- 1:59:05Speaker 5: Sean O'Connell Show, Coordinator's Corner. We're talking Utah offense as
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: they get ready for a road trip to Boulder, Colorado.
- 1:59:13Speaker 5: I saw something this morning that you guys have trailed
- 1:59:17Speaker 5: for something like four and a half minutes so far
- 1:59:20Speaker 5: this season. And you're five for five in all five games,
- 1:59:25Speaker 5: scoring a touchdown on the first possession.
- 1:59:28Speaker 4: Who gets the credit for that besides you?
- 1:59:30Speaker 5: I mean, of course you do, but this is an
- 1:59:33Speaker 5: incredibly efficient offense, especially the first time it touches the
- 1:59:36Speaker 5: ball in a game.
- 1:59:39Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a.
- 1:59:41Speaker 6: Obviously, any time you put yourself in that situation, whether
- 1:59:45Speaker 6: you have the ball first or whether you get it,
- 1:59:49Speaker 6: our defense has done a good job when we haven't
- 1:59:51Speaker 6: gotten first of usually making stops. It's been nice that
- 1:59:56Speaker 6: we've been able to play with a lead, even in
- 1:59:58Speaker 6: games that have gotten close. We spend time on those openers.
- 2:00:06Speaker 6: you know, throughout the week, you know, it's, and it's
- 2:00:09Speaker 6: usually kind of picking from a, from a list of
- 2:00:11Speaker 6: things that we had worked on up until the point
- 2:00:13Speaker 6: where we get to like a Thursday or Friday. Um,
- 2:00:17Speaker 6: so then you got Thursday practice, um, you know, Friday
- 2:00:21Speaker 6: walkthrough Saturday walkthroughs where that's your, pretty much your main
- 2:00:24Speaker 6: focal point are those things that you're going to.
- 2:00:28Speaker 7: Open up with.
- 2:00:28Speaker 6: And so that, um, you have the ability to get
- 2:00:30Speaker 6: a fast start. So those are usually things in the
- 2:00:33Speaker 6: plan that, um, you know, that, get a little bit
- 2:00:36Speaker 6: more attention than, than some of the rest of the,
- 2:00:39Speaker 6: some of the rest of the things. And so you're
- 2:00:40Speaker 6: really working through the details. And so the kids have
- 2:00:42Speaker 6: done a great job owning that. And then, and then
- 2:00:45Speaker 6: even with a lot of those thoughts, we do something
- 2:00:48Speaker 6: as a staff where I have the staff members pick their,
- 2:00:52Speaker 6: their top 10 plays. And, you know, so it's kind
- 2:00:56Speaker 6: of fun as we, as we get to the back
- 2:00:58Speaker 6: end of the week, seeing what, seeing what the staff
- 2:01:01Speaker 6: likes and if that's, similar to the thoughts that I
- 2:01:05Speaker 6: have going in as well, and so incorporate all their
- 2:01:08Speaker 6: thoughts into those openers as well. It usually ends up
- 2:01:10Speaker 6: being kind of similar things that everybody is like, yeah,
- 2:01:14Speaker 6: let's get this going earlier. This can be later because
- 2:01:19Speaker 6: it complements this or whatever it is, but we kind
- 2:01:22Speaker 6: of build those out together, and then the kids do
- 2:01:24Speaker 6: a great job owning it.
- 2:01:26Speaker 5: It's obviously been great, and the results have been fantastic
- 2:01:28Speaker 5: as Utah sits 5-0 headed to Boulder, but do you
- 2:01:32Speaker 5: have to like mentally practice or at least script things or,
- 2:01:36Speaker 5: or get yourself ready for a scenario in which you
- 2:01:39Speaker 5: might have to play from behind this year? Will that
- 2:01:41Speaker 5: alter your play calling? If you have to play from
- 2:01:43Speaker 5: behind a couple of scores, heaven forbid.
- 2:01:46Speaker 6: Yeah. You know, I think just, you know, situation by situation,
- 2:01:50Speaker 6: I think, you know, we've, we've shown that, you know,
- 2:01:53Speaker 6: that we can, you know, and, and, and even in
- 2:01:56Speaker 6: this last game, maybe a little bit more extended drives than,
- 2:01:59Speaker 6: than some we've had. A lot of drives have been,
- 2:02:01Speaker 6: been pretty fast scoring but you know I think the
- 2:02:04Speaker 6: ability that um that we can be pretty explosive that
- 2:02:07Speaker 6: we can be methodical and put drives together um you
- 2:02:11Speaker 6: know I don't think it have to have to see
- 2:02:14Speaker 6: when we get in that situation and what exactly the
- 2:02:16Speaker 6: situation is you know in terms of where in the
- 2:02:19Speaker 6: game and things like that that could maybe dictate play
- 2:02:23Speaker 6: calling or you know how aggressive or you know whatever
- 2:02:26Speaker 6: the sequencing of the calls may be but um but
- 2:02:29Speaker 6: yeah I don't you know, hopefully not a situation that
- 2:02:33Speaker 6: we would be, you know, and, and I think Coach
- 2:02:36Speaker 6: Scali does a really good job, you know, even in
- 2:02:38Speaker 6: situations where we've had a lead, but we didn't have
- 2:02:41Speaker 6: momentum and, you know, we're facing a little bit of adversity,
- 2:02:46Speaker 6: but just how we're responding in those situations. And so
- 2:02:49Speaker 6: it's something that we're talking about with the guys all
- 2:02:51Speaker 6: the time that, yeah, we're going to be in the
- 2:02:53Speaker 6: situation sooner or later and you just got to strap
- 2:02:56Speaker 6: it up and play the next play.
- 2:02:59Speaker 5: What do you expect from the Colorado Buffaloes defense coach?
- 2:03:08Speaker 6: Really, overall, probably as athletic or more than anybody we've
- 2:03:14Speaker 6: seen this year. They play a lot of man coverage,
- 2:03:18Speaker 6: so they trust their back-end guys to be able to
- 2:03:20Speaker 6: do that. They trust their guys on that front to
- 2:03:23Speaker 6: be able to get home bringing four or maybe adding
- 2:03:26Speaker 6: in a fifth. And, you know, and so they've got
- 2:03:29Speaker 6: an athletic group that, you know, moves, moves around a
- 2:03:32Speaker 6: lot and, you know, a little bit light up front,
- 2:03:34Speaker 6: but very switchy and very disruptive. I think they lead
- 2:03:38Speaker 6: the big 12 and TFLs, you know, and so they,
- 2:03:42Speaker 6: they've been, they've been really disrupted that way. And they,
- 2:03:45Speaker 6: they've got guys that can, they can match you on the,
- 2:03:48Speaker 6: on the backend. And so I would expect them to,
- 2:03:51Speaker 6: you know, have confidence in what they've been doing and,
- 2:03:55Speaker 6: and come out and try to do that.
- 2:03:58Speaker 5: Is your like voicemail inbox or your text messages or emails,
- 2:04:02Speaker 5: whatever it is, are you getting extra traffic now? Because
- 2:04:05Speaker 5: I'm starting to see after week four, week five, more
- 2:04:09Speaker 5: national pundits, more of these college football sort of sickos are,
- 2:04:15Speaker 5: are doing tape study on, your mastermind stuff on the
- 2:04:20Speaker 5: weird formations and the weird personnel packages. It took a
- 2:04:23Speaker 5: couple of weeks, but people are really noticing the unique
- 2:04:26Speaker 5: nature of this offense, and they're talking about it on
- 2:04:29Speaker 5: national shows, on TV, on podcasts everywhere. Has that increased
- 2:04:33Speaker 5: Kevin McGibbon's traffic in the messages at all?
- 2:04:38Speaker 6: Well, so I... I guess, truthfully, I wouldn't know too
- 2:04:43Speaker 6: much because I've gotten off of social media and all
- 2:04:49Speaker 6: that stuff. I always felt like that was a distraction.
- 2:04:54Speaker 6: I think the biggest focus for me is that there
- 2:04:59Speaker 6: are so many people involved in this thing from.
- 2:05:05Speaker 6: Coach Scali giving us autonomy and giving us creative freedom
- 2:05:08Speaker 6: and the things that the guys on the offensive staff
- 2:05:11Speaker 6: are coming up with every week. And the players owning
- 2:05:17Speaker 6: it and buying into it and even having thoughts and
- 2:05:20Speaker 6: ideas of their own where this is a team effort
- 2:05:23Speaker 6: and it's got to remain that way. So this is
- 2:05:27Speaker 6: not about me by any stretch. And so just... stay
- 2:05:31Speaker 6: away from the noise.
- 2:05:32Speaker 4: Well, I acknowledge that.
- 2:05:34Speaker 5: We don't dispute that, that it is very much a
- 2:05:36Speaker 5: team effort, but it is a little bit, it does
- 2:05:38Speaker 5: have a little bit to do with you, Coach, because
- 2:05:40Speaker 5: you're calling some great plays and this offense is humming.
- 2:05:43Speaker 6: I appreciate that.
- 2:05:44Speaker 5: We hope it stays that way and always appreciate you
- 2:05:46Speaker 5: giving us some time. I know I've taken up too
- 2:05:48Speaker 5: much of it here today. Good luck in Boulder. We'll
- 2:05:51Speaker 5: chat again in a couple of weeks. Thanks for your time.
- 2:05:53Speaker 6: Okay, sounds good. I appreciate it.
- 2:05:56Speaker 5: Kevin McGiven, that's Mac G. On a Friday here for
- 2:06:00Speaker 5: Coordinator's Corner. Brought to you by Mountain Home Services. The
- 2:06:07Speaker 5: airing of grievances is next. It's ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:06:21Speaker 8: The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: I got a lot of problems with you people.
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: Now you're going to hear about it.
- 2:06:33Speaker 4: That's right.
- 2:06:34Speaker 3: It's time to unburden yourself.
- 2:06:38Speaker 4: Spence check.
- 2:06:38Speaker 3: It's called this segment. The best segment of the week.
- 2:06:42Speaker 3: I have to agree. It's a great, it's a great segment.
- 2:06:46Speaker 3: Time to unburden yourself. Let's air some grievances. It's fun to, uh,
- 2:06:52Speaker 3: be the one in the air chair doing this segment
- 2:06:54Speaker 3: usually of course it's OC here on the Sean O'Connell
- 2:06:57Speaker 3: show I'm James Peterson filling in for OC today he's
- 2:07:00Speaker 3: in Chicago calling PFL fights those get started about two
- 2:07:03Speaker 3: and a half hours from now on ESPN plus and
- 2:07:06Speaker 3: I think later tonight he'll have the main card on
- 2:07:09Speaker 3: ESPN too so be sure to tune into that you'll
- 2:07:12Speaker 3: get to hear from OC today if you tune in
- 2:07:15Speaker 3: to those PFL fights from Chicago but let's air some
- 2:07:18Speaker 3: grievances We got a few on the text line. Get
- 2:07:23Speaker 3: them in, 877-353-0700. Tyson will be manning the phone line
- 2:07:28Speaker 3: as well. If you want to say your grievance out loud,
- 2:07:33Speaker 3: get on the show. The phone line, same phone number
- 2:07:37Speaker 3: as the text line, 877-353-0700. I'm going to start with mine,
- 2:07:43Speaker 3: and then we'll go to Tyson, and we'll read some
- 2:07:45Speaker 3: of yours. Maybe get a phone call or two if
- 2:07:48Speaker 3: you want. you are able to. All right, Tyson, a
- 2:07:54Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago, I'm playing pickup basketball with a group.
- 2:07:59Speaker 3: I've been able to find and hang out with once
- 2:08:04Speaker 3: a week here, and one of the guys there that
- 2:08:07Speaker 3: I don't know very well yet, I'm kind of new
- 2:08:09Speaker 3: to this group, he's not there every week, but he
- 2:08:13Speaker 3: was there a few weeks ago, and he He's younger
- 2:08:18Speaker 3: than me. He's probably Gen Z, somewhere in there, 20-something.
- 2:08:23Speaker 3: And as you have probably seen, a lot of the
- 2:08:28Speaker 3: 20-somethings and younger like to have at least one AirPod
- 2:08:32Speaker 3: in the air at all times, even when they're playing basketball.
- 2:08:35Speaker 3: Bugs me when I see that playing basketball with someone,
- 2:08:41Speaker 3: just because you can't be like 10 minutes from your...
- 2:08:46Speaker 3: unconnected to your phone, disconnected from your phone for 10 minutes, really.
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: It's a lot if you're under the age of 30.
- 2:08:52Speaker 2: You have to have an AirPod in and you have
- 2:08:54Speaker 2: to be connected at all times.
- 2:08:55Speaker 3: You've got to have your own music playing in your ear,
- 2:08:57Speaker 3: even if we've got music playing over the speakers or whatever.
- 2:09:01Speaker 4: Strange.
- 2:09:02Speaker 3: My wife's a school counselor. She's dealing with middle schoolers.
- 2:09:06Speaker 3: She's telling me a lot of the times they're not
- 2:09:09Speaker 3: listening to anything. They just have to have an AirPod
- 2:09:12Speaker 3: in their ear. So that bugs me enough. This story, though...
- 2:09:16Speaker 3: But what made this even worse was he's playing, and
- 2:09:20Speaker 3: I'm not guarding him. I didn't hear any of this.
- 2:09:23Speaker 3: I just heard the person who was guarding him. I
- 2:09:26Speaker 3: was next to him as they're having a conversation after
- 2:09:28Speaker 3: the game. The person who was guarding him goes, were
- 2:09:33Speaker 3: you on the phone?
- 2:09:35Speaker 4: And the guy goes, yeah.
- 2:09:36Speaker 3: So the guy's playing basketball. He's a really good ball handler, too.
- 2:09:40Speaker 3: He's handling the ball most of the time, scoring a lot.
- 2:09:43Speaker 3: While talking to someone else on the phone with his
- 2:09:46Speaker 3: air pod, which first of all, got to give you
- 2:09:48Speaker 3: props for that.
- 2:09:49Speaker 4: You're a good player.
- 2:09:49Speaker 3: If you can, if you can do multitask like that.
- 2:09:52Speaker 3: But secondly, and here's the grievance talking on the phone
- 2:09:57Speaker 3: while you're in the middle of a pickup basketball game,
- 2:09:59Speaker 3: like just answer it. Let call them later. Call them
- 2:10:03Speaker 3: after you miss the free throw. and not able to
- 2:10:06Speaker 3: play the next game.
- 2:10:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:10:07Speaker 3: Like just disconnect while you're playing, while you're getting a
- 2:10:12Speaker 3: sweat in, while you're playing some basketball, you do not
- 2:10:14Speaker 3: need your air pod. And first of all, and you
- 2:10:16Speaker 3: certainly don't need to be taking phone calls while you're
- 2:10:18Speaker 3: playing basketball.
- 2:10:19Speaker 2: Who could you possibly be talking to? That'd be important
- 2:10:22Speaker 2: enough to be like, okay, well I'm on a fast
- 2:10:24Speaker 2: break here, but I've, this conversation is just as important.
- 2:10:28Speaker 2: You just pull up, hit a three, and then you
- 2:10:30Speaker 2: continue your conversation with whoever's on the phone and whoever's
- 2:10:33Speaker 2: on the other side of that conversation is You know,
- 2:10:36Speaker 2: they're probably thinking to themselves, wait, you're playing basketball and
- 2:10:39Speaker 2: talking to me at the same time? Just hang up.
- 2:10:41Speaker 2: I'll call you back when the game's over.
- 2:10:43Speaker 3: I bet it was a buddy who is in this
- 2:10:46Speaker 3: same world and doesn't care.
- 2:10:48Speaker 4: That's just, it's a whole, just.
- 2:10:50Speaker 2: What they do. Probably wasn't the first time he was
- 2:10:52Speaker 2: carrying on a conversation and playing basketball at the same time.
- 2:10:54Speaker 2: It sounds like some Gary Payton stuff where Gary Payton
- 2:10:57Speaker 2: will be trash talking everybody on the court, trash talk
- 2:11:00Speaker 2: and the person in the fifth row calling plays and
- 2:11:02Speaker 2: playing basketball at the same time. That's basically what this
- 2:11:04Speaker 2: guy was doing.
- 2:11:05Speaker 3: If Gary Payton grew up now and was 20 something now,
- 2:11:10Speaker 3: and he were allowed to an NBA games, he'd be
- 2:11:13Speaker 3: trash talking to someone on the phone on an air pod.
- 2:11:16Speaker 3: while schooling people on the court like he did back
- 2:11:19Speaker 3: in the day. That's the kind of level we had here. Yeah,
- 2:11:24Speaker 3: it was weird.
- 2:11:25Speaker 4: First time I've ever seen that.
- 2:11:26Speaker 3: I've seen the guys wearing the AirPod while they're playing
- 2:11:30Speaker 3: basketball before, and I assume they're listening to music or something.
- 2:11:34Speaker 3: I've learned later that they may not be listening to anything.
- 2:11:37Speaker 3: They just can't stand to not have their AirPod in
- 2:11:39Speaker 3: their ear. I have never seen or heard of someone
- 2:11:44Speaker 3: who's on the phone With their AirPod while they're playing
- 2:11:48Speaker 3: ball before.
- 2:11:49Speaker 4: Until then, a few weeks ago. So just disconnect.
- 2:11:53Speaker 3: We were playing two games of 11 or 15, sometimes
- 2:11:57Speaker 3: 21 by ones and twos. That's like 10, max 15 minutes.
- 2:12:03Speaker 3: You're going to be okay if you're not connected to
- 2:12:06Speaker 3: your phone there.
- 2:12:07Speaker 7: But, I mean.
- 2:12:10Speaker 3: It's a whole different generation. It's the way of the
- 2:12:12Speaker 3: world now. So I guess I need to get over it.
- 2:12:14Speaker 3: But grievance, okay?
- 2:12:16Speaker 4: Grievance.
- 2:12:17Speaker 3: We need to get away from that. Tyson, you got
- 2:12:20Speaker 3: a couple of grievances. What's the first one you want
- 2:12:22Speaker 3: to add?
- 2:12:22Speaker 2: You know, this morning on the way here, I decided
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: I want to get a double croissant, which was sausage.
- 2:12:27Speaker 2: So I stopped at a Burger King. I ordered in
- 2:12:30Speaker 2: the person. I couldn't understand them all that well, but
- 2:12:31Speaker 2: I did understand second window. So I went over. And
- 2:12:35Speaker 2: there was a car in front of me, so I
- 2:12:36Speaker 2: was parked at the first window for a good two minutes.
- 2:12:39Speaker 2: There was nobody hanging out at the first window, and
- 2:12:41Speaker 2: the person said second window anyway. Well, a person in
- 2:12:43Speaker 2: front of me pulls out. I pull into the second window,
- 2:12:46Speaker 2: and somebody like 20 feet away from the window goes,
- 2:12:51Speaker 2: go back to the first window. Go back to the
- 2:12:53Speaker 2: first window. There's a cashier. I could see the cashier.
- 2:12:57Speaker 2: I could see that you can easily pay at the
- 2:13:00Speaker 2: second window, especially since at this same location, I have
- 2:13:03Speaker 2: paid at the second window the previous five times I've
- 2:13:06Speaker 2: been there. She wants me to back up in a
- 2:13:08Speaker 2: very tough parking lot to the first window, and I'm like,
- 2:13:13Speaker 2: why don't we just pay it here? I don't understand it.
- 2:13:15Speaker 2: So she walks towards the first window and I pull ahead.
- 2:13:18Speaker 2: I am not, I am not going to put up
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: with that. And so I just, uh, I bolted on him.
- 2:13:23Speaker 2: I did not get my breakfast. You just said, I'll
- 2:13:26Speaker 2: get breakfast somewhere else then.
- 2:13:27Speaker 6: Huh?
- 2:13:27Speaker 2: I don't understand the previous five times. And you know,
- 2:13:30Speaker 2: when you say second window, I, I, I give them,
- 2:13:33Speaker 2: you know, I usually, if they say second window, I
- 2:13:36Speaker 2: was at the first window for a good two minutes.
- 2:13:38Speaker 2: They weren't there. And so I pulled up to the
- 2:13:40Speaker 2: second window specifically because they said second window. And all
- 2:13:43Speaker 2: of a sudden they want me to go back to
- 2:13:45Speaker 2: the first window.
- 2:13:46Speaker 7: Nope.
- 2:13:47Speaker 2: I'm never going back to that location ever again. I'm devastated.
- 2:13:50Speaker 4: Yeah, that's terrible. That's terrible.
- 2:13:52Speaker 3: You cannot expect someone to back up in a drive-thru line. Thankfully,
- 2:13:57Speaker 3: there was no one behind you.
- 2:13:58Speaker 4: So I guess you... I guess you.
- 2:14:00Speaker 3: Technically could have, but I don't blame you for just
- 2:14:02Speaker 3: throwing your hands up and be like, I'll just, I'll
- 2:14:04Speaker 3: get breakfast somewhere else.
- 2:14:05Speaker 2: Now, if you go to a hundred drive-thrus, I mean,
- 2:14:07Speaker 2: how many do you actually pay at the first window?
- 2:14:09Speaker 2: Every McDonald's, it seems like you pay at the first window,
- 2:14:11Speaker 2: but that's universal. And you got somebody sitting there waiting
- 2:14:13Speaker 2: to take your cash.
- 2:14:15Speaker 4: In and out is always busy enough.
- 2:14:17Speaker 3: They got the, they got both windows there, but, but
- 2:14:20Speaker 3: nowadays it's like, those might be the only two.
- 2:14:23Speaker 2: If you want me to pay at the first window,
- 2:14:25Speaker 2: have somebody sitting there. And I was parked there for
- 2:14:27Speaker 2: a good two minutes as the person in front of
- 2:14:29Speaker 2: me was waiting for their order. You know, if you
- 2:14:31Speaker 2: wanted me to pay at the first window, have somebody
- 2:14:33Speaker 2: sitting there.
- 2:14:33Speaker 4: Take your payment.
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: I'll gladly give them some money and then give me
- 2:14:36Speaker 2: some change.
- 2:14:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that's annoying. Grievance.
- 2:14:40Speaker 3: Against you burger King and Tyson Whiting, you just lost
- 2:14:44Speaker 3: his business forever. So at least at that location, I
- 2:14:47Speaker 3: might go to a different location, a different burger King,
- 2:14:49Speaker 3: that location.
- 2:14:50Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 2:14:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 2:14:51Speaker 3: You will not be getting any of Tyson Whiting's life
- 2:14:54Speaker 3: savings anymore. Got some grievances coming in on the text line.
- 2:15:00Speaker 3: Let's see. Derek, our guy, Derek H who is a
- 2:15:04Speaker 3: daily texter for us. We love you, Derek grievance. All caps.
- 2:15:08Speaker 3: It's too early for Christmas music. Bunch of exclamation points.
- 2:15:13Speaker 3: I should not be hearing that stuff at Walmart or Target.
- 2:15:16Speaker 3: It's still October. You guys can wait a few weeks.
- 2:15:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:15:21Speaker 4: Listen.
- 2:15:23Speaker 3: When it comes to department stores or anything like that,
- 2:15:26Speaker 3: I agree with you.
- 2:15:27Speaker 4: Let's wait a little bit.
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: It's Halloween. This is Halloween music.
- 2:15:31Speaker 3: As far as like, there's people that complain about people
- 2:15:34Speaker 3: who listen to it on Spotify in the car too
- 2:15:38Speaker 3: early in their house too early. You guys that love
- 2:15:42Speaker 3: Christmas that much. And I'm happy to be married to
- 2:15:44Speaker 3: someone who loves Christmas that much that they'll, they'll turn
- 2:15:47Speaker 3: it on. My wife's not listening to it now. She
- 2:15:50Speaker 3: loves Halloween and Halloween music too much to do that,
- 2:15:53Speaker 3: but she's, you know, first of first of November, she's,
- 2:15:58Speaker 3: It's it's Christmas time.
- 2:16:00Speaker 4: Like we got to cool it.
- 2:16:02Speaker 3: On complaining about people who want to live their lives
- 2:16:04Speaker 3: that way, but publicly at department stores, you can wait
- 2:16:07Speaker 3: to play the Christmas music. I'm with you there on
- 2:16:10Speaker 3: I'm with you there, Derek on that. Uh, let's, let's
- 2:16:13Speaker 3: play some monster mash. Let's play some, uh, some Halloween tunes,
- 2:16:17Speaker 3: play some thriller. If you want to get festive until
- 2:16:20Speaker 3: at least until November 1st, I know a lot of
- 2:16:23Speaker 3: people are like, don't do it till after Thanksgiving, like whatever.
- 2:16:26Speaker 2: Um, Don't need to be hearing that in the department source.
- 2:16:29Speaker 2: Good grievance there by Derek. Especially when the temperature is
- 2:16:32Speaker 2: like 70 degrees today.
- 2:16:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true. It's nowhere near winter weather. Let's see.
- 2:16:38Speaker 3: Whoa, this is a long one here. From 1466. Thanks
- 2:16:46Speaker 3: to a different texter's comment last week, I've learned that
- 2:16:49Speaker 3: sometimes I might be the problem. So today I'm asking
- 2:16:52Speaker 3: for a ruling. I drive the carpool lane from Spanish
- 2:16:55Speaker 3: Fork to North Salt Lake doing... nine over the speed
- 2:16:58Speaker 3: limit because apparently 10 over is when the motorcycle cops
- 2:17:01Speaker 3: start getting interested but inevitably somebody gets on my right
- 2:17:04Speaker 3: bumper and stays there for miles it's like we're playing
- 2:17:07Speaker 3: chicken and they're convinced i'm going to blink first here's
- 2:17:10Speaker 3: my thinking i'm already breaking the law by going nine
- 2:17:13Speaker 3: over do i really need to break it by 15
- 2:17:15Speaker 3: just to make somebody behind me happy so am i
- 2:17:18Speaker 3: the problem should i move over or am i allowed
- 2:17:20Speaker 3: to enjoy my speeding at my own carefully calculated speed
- 2:17:24Speaker 3: so let's see You're in the carpool lane is what
- 2:17:29Speaker 3: you're saying. Going nine over. See, no, you are carpool
- 2:17:32Speaker 3: lane is not the fast lane. You can go like
- 2:17:36Speaker 3: you should be going the speed limit and you should
- 2:17:38Speaker 3: probably be going a little bit over the speed limit.
- 2:17:41Speaker 3: Like you are when you're on the, when you're on
- 2:17:43Speaker 3: the freeway, but you carpool lane is not the fast lane.
- 2:17:47Speaker 3: You do not have any obligation to, to even go
- 2:17:51Speaker 3: over the speed limit in the carpool lane. You can
- 2:17:53Speaker 3: go as fast as you want in the carpool lane.
- 2:17:55Speaker 3: If you're in the left lane, get out of there.
- 2:17:58Speaker 3: That's a passing lane. That's for people who want to
- 2:18:00Speaker 3: go 20, 30 miles over and camp in there going
- 2:18:03Speaker 3: that fast.
- 2:18:04Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:18:04Speaker 3: If that's not you, which it probably shouldn't be anybody,
- 2:18:07Speaker 3: to be honest with you, then you need to get
- 2:18:10Speaker 3: out of the fast lane.
- 2:18:11Speaker 4: That's the left lane. Carpool lane is not the fast lane.
- 2:18:15Speaker 4: They got to get out.
- 2:18:16Speaker 3: They got to move and get out in front of
- 2:18:17Speaker 3: you if they don't like the speed you're going.
- 2:18:20Speaker 4: That's my take on that.
- 2:18:21Speaker 2: There's a lot of people that think the carpool lane
- 2:18:23Speaker 2: is the fast lane. They almost think that, all right,
- 2:18:27Speaker 2: I'm in the carpool lane. That means I should just
- 2:18:28Speaker 2: be able to fly down the freeway at 15 over.
- 2:18:31Speaker 2: And they get very upset when somebody's going nine over.
- 2:18:33Speaker 3: The carpool lane is the far left lane, but you
- 2:18:36Speaker 3: know that it's got the double lines there? It's a
- 2:18:39Speaker 3: different lane than the other four or five, depending on
- 2:18:42Speaker 3: where you are. You get to go about as fast
- 2:18:46Speaker 3: as you want in the carpool lane. So, no, you
- 2:18:48Speaker 3: are not the problem, Texter 1466. It's the people behind you.
- 2:18:53Speaker 3: It's the people playing chicken with you. You're the problem.
- 2:18:56Speaker 3: Stop it. If you want to go faster, you've got
- 2:18:59Speaker 3: to get out of the carpool lane and pass the
- 2:19:01Speaker 3: slower person in front of you in the carpool lane.
- 2:19:03Speaker 3: If you want to go faster in the carpool lane,
- 2:19:05Speaker 3: that's what you've got to do. That's the rules of
- 2:19:07Speaker 3: the carpool lane. Jace Babka, friend of the show, grievance
- 2:19:14Speaker 3: for sports outlets or people who cover teams just throwing
- 2:19:16Speaker 3: out the most insane obscure stats of all time. Most
- 2:19:20Speaker 3: rushing yards on the second Saturday of October when it's
- 2:19:22Speaker 3: raining and flags are at half mass after being.
- 2:19:24Speaker 2: Two years sober.
- 2:19:26Speaker 4: Absolutely. Biggest game when it's raining on a Tuesday.
- 2:19:32Speaker 3: First home run when it's sunny on a Saturday morning. Yeah,
- 2:19:38Speaker 3: these are these are ridiculous, obscure stats. That's a valid
- 2:19:42Speaker 3: grievance by you, Jason. It's a we say hello to
- 2:19:45Speaker 3: you and the family. Uh, Spencer, I'm Gen Z and I'm,
- 2:19:48Speaker 3: and I'm with you on AirPods. I see so many
- 2:19:50Speaker 3: people making calls with biking slash running. And I'm just
- 2:19:53Speaker 3: wondering how the recipient of the call isn't pissed listening
- 2:19:55Speaker 3: to the heavy breathing and loud talking combo.
- 2:19:58Speaker 7: LOL.
- 2:19:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Let's just, just disconnect and exercise people. It should
- 2:20:04Speaker 3: not be that hard. Thank you, Spencer. And it's great
- 2:20:06Speaker 3: to hear that and refreshing to hear that from a
- 2:20:08Speaker 3: Gen Z. Maybe it's the generation younger than Gen Z.
- 2:20:11Speaker 3: Maybe it's not you guys that are doing this, uh, Spencer. Um,
- 2:20:16Speaker 3: So I appreciate you. It should not be that big
- 2:20:20Speaker 3: a deal to disconnect for a few minutes at a
- 2:20:22Speaker 3: time when you're exercising, for crying out loud. A couple
- 2:20:25Speaker 3: more here, and then we will get to crosstalk with
- 2:20:28Speaker 3: Spence Checketts and hand it over to the drive for
- 2:20:30Speaker 3: the day. Grievance with Bo Nix. This is from 1943.
- 2:20:35Speaker 3: I don't usually stress watch my Broncos the way I
- 2:20:38Speaker 3: do with Utah, mainly because I don't care as much
- 2:20:41Speaker 3: about NFL, but last night he looked absolutely awful. Also
- 2:20:45Speaker 3: glad Peyton has taken over offensive play calling, and I
- 2:20:49Speaker 3: hope Bo can get it right before the playoffs because
- 2:20:51Speaker 3: as good as the defense is, they still need to score.
- 2:20:56Speaker 3: I came in with a bit of a take here
- 2:21:00Speaker 3: that I'm not quite sure about, I'm not 100% confident in,
- 2:21:04Speaker 3: but this is how I'm feeling anyway. I'm starting to
- 2:21:06Speaker 3: think that Bo Nix is the new Jimmy Garoppolo. Remember
- 2:21:11Speaker 3: how much hope that everyone had for Jimmy G as
- 2:21:15Speaker 3: Tom Brady's backup? He's the future for the Patriots, and
- 2:21:19Speaker 3: then he gets traded.
- 2:21:20Speaker 4: To San Francisco.
- 2:21:21Speaker 3: They go undefeated at the end of his first season
- 2:21:26Speaker 3: after he's traded to the Niners. They finish that year undefeated,
- 2:21:29Speaker 3: and there's all this hope about Jimmy G is going
- 2:21:31Speaker 3: to be a superstar, and then he's just Jimmy G.
- 2:21:34Speaker 3: I think Bo Nix, not that people have thought that
- 2:21:38Speaker 3: Bo Nix was going to be a superstar, but I
- 2:21:40Speaker 3: feel like we've had higher hopes, especially with them getting
- 2:21:43Speaker 3: to the AFC championship game last year, the playoffs the
- 2:21:46Speaker 3: last two years since he got drafted. I feel like
- 2:21:50Speaker 3: there was an elevated expectation for Bo Nix, and yet
- 2:21:53Speaker 3: he's playing more like Jimmy G. He's playing a lot
- 2:21:57Speaker 3: more like Jimmy G than someone that we expect that
- 2:22:00Speaker 3: we've expected Bo Nix to play like.
- 2:22:03Speaker 4: So I don't know.
- 2:22:05Speaker 3: Maybe that's too early to say something like that. But
- 2:22:07Speaker 3: Broncos fans, you might be dealing with the Jimmy G
- 2:22:10Speaker 3: of the NFL now.
- 2:22:12Speaker 4: Last one.
- 2:22:12Speaker 3: And then we're going to have to break Adam on
- 2:22:15Speaker 3: the text line grievance. I know this is nothing new,
- 2:22:17Speaker 3: but why is it totally acceptable for doctors to be
- 2:22:20Speaker 3: 30 plus minutes late for routine scheduled appointments?
- 2:22:23Speaker 4: I'm tired of waiting.
- 2:22:25Speaker 3: An hour to fit my 10-minute appointment. Figure it out,
- 2:22:29Speaker 3: Intermountain Health. Yeah, Seinfeld called it two waiting rooms in
- 2:22:37Speaker 3: the doctor's office, right? You have the big waiting room
- 2:22:39Speaker 3: with other people in it. You're waiting to be called back,
- 2:22:42Speaker 3: and then they call you back, and you sit in
- 2:22:44Speaker 3: the smaller waiting room, which is the examination room for another,
- 2:22:47Speaker 3: it feels like the same amount of time. Yeah, I
- 2:22:51Speaker 3: don't know why that's the norm, but I'm with you.
- 2:22:54Speaker 3: I'm with you, Adam. If we could just be a
- 2:22:57Speaker 3: little more prompt. If we could just get these routine appointments.
- 2:23:01Speaker 4: In a lot quicker. I don't know.
- 2:23:02Speaker 3: Maybe they're patient loads every day. Maybe there's a plausible
- 2:23:07Speaker 3: reason why. But it does feel like it could be
- 2:23:10Speaker 3: a lot quicker.
- 2:23:11Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:23:12Speaker 3: Appreciate those grievances. I feel a lot more unburdened. Tyson,
- 2:23:16Speaker 3: I hope you do, too.
- 2:23:17Speaker 2: I'm just never going back to that location again. Maybe
- 2:23:23Speaker 2: I should have backed up and just went to window one.
- 2:23:27Speaker 4: I don't blame you for not doing it. That's a
- 2:23:29Speaker 4: ridiculous thing to do.
- 2:23:31Speaker 3: And I hope all of you listening, especially those that
- 2:23:34Speaker 3: texted in, feel unburdened heading into a big sports weekend.
- 2:23:40Speaker 3: Real quick before we break, just want to remind you,
- 2:23:42Speaker 3: speaking of big sports weekend, some of the top games
- 2:23:45Speaker 3: happening this weekend. Tonight on the station, we have the
- 2:23:47Speaker 3: game four of the ALCS game. Guardians hosting the Rays,
- 2:23:51Speaker 3: Cleveland up 2-1. That starts at 5.30 with pregame coverage.
- 2:23:54Speaker 3: 6 o'clock around there is first pitch here on your
- 2:23:58Speaker 3: home of the MLB playoffs.
- 2:24:00Speaker 7: No.
- 2:24:00Speaker 3: 11 Utah at Colorado, 8.15 kick. We've got 10 hours
- 2:24:03Speaker 3: of game day coverage for you as we do every
- 2:24:06Speaker 3: Utes game day. Begins at 4.15 with Porter Larson in
- 2:24:09Speaker 3: the pregame show. We also have tomorrow No. 7 Texas
- 2:24:14Speaker 3: hosting Florida at 10 a.m. right after Utah Golf Radio.
- 2:24:18Speaker 3: here on your home for football. The Mammoth are hosting
- 2:24:22Speaker 3: the Oilers tomorrow night, 8 o'clock on Utah 16 and
- 2:24:25Speaker 3: Mammoth Plus. They just beat Connor McDavid and company 4-2
- 2:24:28Speaker 3: last night in Edmonton. You got the big noon kickoff game,
- 2:24:32Speaker 3: number four Ohio State at number five Indiana.
- 2:24:35Speaker 4: That's at 10 a.m.
- 2:24:36Speaker 2: On Fox.
- 2:24:37Speaker 3: Sunday night football, Cowboys at Packers just after 6, about
- 2:24:41Speaker 3: 6-20 kickoff on NBC. A lot on the line for
- 2:24:45Speaker 3: both teams, so could be the difference between staying in
- 2:24:47Speaker 3: the playoff picture, even though this, even this early in
- 2:24:50Speaker 3: the season and falling out of the playoff picture. And
- 2:24:52Speaker 3: then Tyler Huntley getting his second straight start for the Ravens.
- 2:24:56Speaker 3: They're taking on Spencer Fano and the Browns in Cleveland
- 2:25:00Speaker 3: to Utes going, uh, head to head, although they won't
- 2:25:03Speaker 3: be on the field at the same time. That's at
- 2:25:05Speaker 3: 11 AM on Fox, hopefully on it's the local game
- 2:25:09Speaker 3: here on Fox 13. Um, And then it's October, guys,
- 2:25:13Speaker 3: so it's time to take in one of Utah's most

- 2:25:46Speaker 3: And then we'll hand it over to Spence check. It's
- 2:25:49Speaker 3: next in about three minutes on the Sean O'Connell show,
- 2:25:51Speaker 3: James Peterson, filling in on Utah's number one sports talk
- 2:25:54Speaker 3: and your home of the UTS ESPN, 700 and 92,
- 2:25:57Speaker 3: one FM.
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell show from the Murdoch
- 2:26:03Speaker 1: Hyundai studio of ESPN, 700 and 92, one FM.
- 2:26:11Speaker 3: All right, winding down a Friday, Football Friday, Sean O'Connell show,
- 2:26:16Speaker 3: James Peterson sitting in for O.C.
- 2:26:18Speaker 4: Yet again, O.C.
- 2:26:19Speaker 3: Will be back Monday, though, back from his PFL assignment
- 2:26:24Speaker 3: in Chicago.
- 2:26:24Speaker 4: By the way, you can watch O.C.
- 2:26:26Speaker 3: Call those fights starting at 4 o'clock two hours from
- 2:26:29Speaker 3: now on ESPN +. I think it moves to when
- 2:26:33Speaker 3: the main card happens around 9, it moves to ESPN2, so.
- 2:26:37Speaker 4: Be sure to check.
- 2:26:38Speaker 3: OC out and the PFL out on the ESPN networks
- 2:26:41Speaker 3: tonight from Chicago.
- 2:26:43Speaker 4: He'll be back on Monday. I got Spence check.
- 2:26:46Speaker 3: It's in studio for cross talk before we hand it
- 2:26:48Speaker 3: over to the drive.
- 2:26:50Speaker 4: Spence, how are you?
- 2:26:50Speaker 9: I'm good, man. Glad that it's Friday. Glad that it's sunny.
- 2:26:55Speaker 9: Ready to play some mediocre golf this weekend and hopefully
- 2:26:57Speaker 9: watch a lot of really good football.
- 2:26:59Speaker 4: Where are you? Where's your tea time?
- 2:27:01Speaker 6: Bonneville.
- 2:27:01Speaker 2: Always Bonneville.
- 2:27:02Speaker 4: Always Bonnie.
- 2:27:03Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:27:04Speaker 9: If I hit the lights right, I can get there
- 2:27:05Speaker 9: in seven minutes.
- 2:27:07Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:27:07Speaker 9: So, I mean, I like to go up to Mountain Dell,
- 2:27:10Speaker 9: you know, just mostly the local city courses, some beautiful
- 2:27:15Speaker 9: courses up north, Bountiful Ridge, Valley View. I need to
- 2:27:18Speaker 9: get down to Hobble Creek down south before the snow flies.
- 2:27:21Speaker 9: I'm trying to take advantage of every sunny day we
- 2:27:24Speaker 9: have because most people that are experts in weather, which
- 2:27:27Speaker 9: I'm not, believe that we're actually getting snow. So the
- 2:27:31Speaker 9: golf course is actually, I think I played, I think
- 2:27:34Speaker 9: I played around last year and every month.
- 2:27:36Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:27:36Speaker 9: December, January played like five times in February.
- 2:27:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean, it was a lot more mild last
- 2:27:41Speaker 3: year too. So a lot better chance of doing that
- 2:27:45Speaker 3: last year. Maybe we have a real winter this year
- 2:27:48Speaker 3: and won't have as many chances, but that's, that's great.
- 2:27:51Speaker 3: So BYU, Notre Dame, I said earlier, I just have
- 2:27:55Speaker 3: nothing more to say about Colorado, Utah.
- 2:27:58Speaker 4: Just go win Utah.
- 2:28:00Speaker 3: Obviously, what we talked about yesterday, can you perfect some
- 2:28:04Speaker 3: of these things that have not been ideal? And we
- 2:28:07Speaker 3: talked about those things yesterday in crosstalk, too. I don't
- 2:28:10Speaker 3: think we need to talk much more about that. Just
- 2:28:12Speaker 3: go win and don't get got before a big Houston game.
- 2:28:17Speaker 3: So BYU-Notre Dame, top 10 matchup, could end up being
- 2:28:23Speaker 3: the biggest win in BYU history in Provo if they're
- 2:28:27Speaker 3: able to pull off this upset. But it's a 10.5
- 2:28:30Speaker 3: And if you.
- 2:28:33Speaker 4: Look at the stats, if you look at the fact
- 2:28:35Speaker 4: that L.J.
- 2:28:35Speaker 3: Martin is out, it's not hard to see why Vegas
- 2:28:40Speaker 3: likes Notre Dame that much. I still think BYU probably
- 2:28:43Speaker 3: makes it a one-score game, but I don't have much
- 2:28:47Speaker 3: problem with the line because BYU is compromised health-wise, even
- 2:28:50Speaker 3: though they're getting healthier, and Notre Dame just appears to
- 2:28:54Speaker 3: be that good. How much of a chance do you
- 2:28:57Speaker 3: give BYU without L.J.
- 2:28:58Speaker 8: Martin?
- 2:28:59Speaker 2: To win or to cover?
- 2:29:00Speaker 4: To win this game.
- 2:29:02Speaker 2: Not a great one.
- 2:29:03Speaker 9: I wouldn't be stunned. That's a really tough place to
- 2:29:06Speaker 9: play at night for teams.
- 2:29:07Speaker 3: And it's still a great BYU defense that's going to
- 2:29:10Speaker 3: keep them in the game.
- 2:29:11Speaker 9: Yeah, and they've done such a good job with that
- 2:29:13Speaker 9: game day experience. The stadium is crazy when it's a
- 2:29:17Speaker 9: night game, much like here at Rice-Eccles Stadium. I think
- 2:29:20Speaker 9: BYU is 15 and one in their last 16 games
- 2:29:23Speaker 9: that have kicked off after five.
- 2:29:25Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 2:29:26Speaker 9: They just play there. They're like demons at night. And
- 2:29:29Speaker 9: Utah is too. It's just, it's a weird deal. Notre
- 2:29:33Speaker 9: Dame on paper is as talented as any team in
- 2:29:37Speaker 9: college football. And over the past couple of days, I've
- 2:29:40Speaker 9: listened to countless college football shows. I've, I've heard one
- 2:29:44Speaker 9: person pick BYU to win. Oh, and he has a
- 2:29:47Speaker 9: big 12 centric podcast. So it felt a little like,
- 2:29:50Speaker 9: But I've heard several people pick BYU to cover.
- 2:29:53Speaker 2: And that's kind of where I'm at.
- 2:29:55Speaker 9: I could see like a 21-17, 24-21 Notre Dame win.
- 2:30:00Speaker 9: The problem is the way Notre Dame is built. I mean,
- 2:30:03Speaker 9: everybody talks about CJ Carr. Marcus Freeman is the type
- 2:30:05Speaker 9: of coach that if he's up, if BYU gets off
- 2:30:09Speaker 9: to a tough start and Notre Dame's up like 14-0,
- 2:30:13Speaker 9: Marcus Freeman will sit on the ball and kill the
- 2:30:15Speaker 9: clock and just choke you until you die. He's not
- 2:30:18Speaker 9: a style point guy. He just wants to win, and
- 2:30:21Speaker 9: he'll do it in any way, shape, or form. And
- 2:30:23Speaker 9: to your point about BYU's defense, you always have to
- 2:30:29Speaker 9: talk about whether or not Notre Dame's schedule gives us
- 2:30:31Speaker 9: a fair view of who they are, because BYU's been
- 2:30:33Speaker 9: tested in a way Notre Dame hasn't.
- 2:30:35Speaker 4: That's true.
- 2:30:36Speaker 9: Arizona's a good team. Noah Fede is a good quarterback.
- 2:30:39Speaker 9: Arizona's one of the top three offenses in the Big 12,
- 2:30:42Speaker 9: and BYU shut them out in the second half. And
- 2:30:45Speaker 9: I don't think Iowa State is a pushover. I don't
- 2:30:47Speaker 9: think they're great. So, The numbers right now are tough
- 2:30:52Speaker 9: to lean into, but both BYU and Notre Dame have
- 2:30:54Speaker 9: a top 10 defense in more or less every metric
- 2:30:57Speaker 9: that matters. Now, in most metrics that matter, Notre Dame
- 2:31:00Speaker 9: is either 1, 2, or 3, and BYU is like 6, 7,
- 2:31:03Speaker 9: or 8. Overall defense, BYU is 7, Notre Dame is 1.
- 2:31:07Speaker 9: Notre Dame, over the past three weeks, has started to
- 2:31:09Speaker 9: run the ball more with a Jonas Walton kid to
- 2:31:12Speaker 9: take some pressure off of CJ Carr. The problem is,
- 2:31:16Speaker 9: for BYU the way I see it, is Bears are
- 2:31:19Speaker 9: going to have to throw it And there are four
- 2:31:21Speaker 9: NFL dudes in that defensive backfield. And, you know, outside
- 2:31:26Speaker 9: of the Glasgow kid, the legend Glasgow kid, there hasn't
- 2:31:29Speaker 9: been a ton of, I know the Kyler Casper kid
- 2:31:31Speaker 9: has had some moments and they've got some decent tight ends,
- 2:31:35Speaker 9: but in order for them to allow the run game
- 2:31:37Speaker 9: to open up a little bit, they're going to have
- 2:31:39Speaker 9: to throw it. And I don't think they can against
- 2:31:40Speaker 9: the secondary. So I wouldn't be stunned if it was
- 2:31:43Speaker 9: a low scoring game and BYU covers. I have a
- 2:31:46Speaker 9: hard time seeing them win the game though.
- 2:31:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:31:48Speaker 4: If Sione Moa, can play.
- 2:31:50Speaker 2: Is he available?
- 2:31:52Speaker 3: He's been, it seems like he's been medically cleared, but
- 2:31:56Speaker 3: they may, they haven't said he's going to play or
- 2:31:58Speaker 3: not yet. So maybe he's not ready to play, but
- 2:32:00Speaker 3: he can physically play. It might be the situation. If
- 2:32:03Speaker 3: he plays, that'll be huge for BYU because he's not
- 2:32:07Speaker 3: LJ Martin, but he's your second string running back, not
- 2:32:10Speaker 3: your third or fourth.
- 2:32:11Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:32:12Speaker 3: I still don't think that's going to be enough for
- 2:32:14Speaker 3: BYU to pull off this upset at home. Um, But yeah,
- 2:32:19Speaker 3: I would love it if BYU goes out and proves
- 2:32:21Speaker 3: us wrong. It just feels like they're dealing with a
- 2:32:26Speaker 3: team that's just at even a higher level than they
- 2:32:29Speaker 3: are in Notre Dame. But we'll see. 5.30 kickoff on
- 2:32:33Speaker 3: ABC tomorrow. Game day starting at 7 a.m. in Provo.
- 2:32:37Speaker 3: That'll be exciting. Any grievances, Spence, on this Friday? Grievance
- 2:32:44Speaker 3: with my shoulder and neck. I have a neck kink
- 2:32:48Speaker 3: that for two weeks.
- 2:32:49Speaker 4: I've heard you talking about that.
- 2:32:50Speaker 2: Dude, it won't go away. I've tried everything.
- 2:32:52Speaker 4: And Porter's not been very helpful.
- 2:32:53Speaker 9: Porter's not helpful with anything ever, no matter what.
- 2:32:56Speaker 4: Just stretch.
- 2:32:57Speaker 9: But I've stretched. I did the yoga thing, hot compress,
- 2:33:00Speaker 9: cold compress last night. Got a little massage this morning.
- 2:33:03Speaker 2: Did nothing. Nothing.
- 2:33:05Speaker 9: I don't know what's going on, man. So that's my
- 2:33:07Speaker 9: biggest grievance right now. I'm in constant physical pain. And
- 2:33:10Speaker 9: as my mama likes to say, it's hard to be
- 2:33:13Speaker 9: yourself when you don't feel like yourself.
- 2:33:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:33:15Speaker 9: I've got my words. I've got my little massage ball
- 2:33:17Speaker 9: in the bag. So for our viewers on YouTube today,
- 2:33:20Speaker 9: you're going to be seeing me on the ground stretching
- 2:33:22Speaker 9: during breaks. If you want to tune in, I did
- 2:33:24Speaker 9: get my Halloween costume done this morning.
- 2:33:26Speaker 4: Was it Ted Lasso?
- 2:33:28Speaker 2: It is. I'm going to just get it.
- 2:33:30Speaker 9: It's low hanging fruit because I have to go. I
- 2:33:32Speaker 9: have a Halloween party tomorrow and it's with my RSL people.
- 2:33:35Speaker 9: So I might just do a soccer thing, you know,
- 2:33:37Speaker 9: so got that done, taken care of and Yeah, man,
- 2:33:40Speaker 9: excited for the weekend.
- 2:33:41Speaker 2: It's going to be beautiful weather and a lot of
- 2:33:43Speaker 2: good football.
- 2:33:43Speaker 3: Yeah, the other great game, other great top ten game
- 2:33:47Speaker 3: with my Buckeyes in Indiana should be great on big
- 2:33:50Speaker 3: noon kickoff. We got baseball on the station tonight, so
- 2:33:53Speaker 3: what a great time. We say it every October, maybe
- 2:33:56Speaker 3: the best month in sports.
- 2:33:58Speaker 4: No doubt. It should be a lot of fun this weekend. Thanks, Spence.
- 2:34:00Speaker 2: Good to see you, James.
- 2:34:02Speaker 3: We will hand it over to Spence next. This has
- 2:34:04Speaker 3: been the Sean O'Connell Show. OC is back Monday. It's
- 2:34:08Speaker 3: been a lot of fun filling in for OC, and
- 2:34:11Speaker 3: we hope he has safe travels from Chicago after tonight's fights.
- 2:34:16Speaker 3: This has been the Sean O'Connell Show with me, James Peterson.
- 2:34:19Speaker 3: The Drive with Spence Chekits is next here on Utah's
- 2:34:21Speaker 3: number one sports talk, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
