- 1:00:00We've seen a lot of policies and
- 1:00:01executive orders come
- 1:00:02down in the last little bit.
- 1:00:03From the US, Canada, all over the world.
- 1:00:06We see policies all the time.
- 1:00:07A lot of times we just
- 1:00:08don't even know what it means.
- 1:00:09There are so many different levels to
- 1:00:11each policy that makes
- 1:00:13it really difficult to
- 1:00:14understand how is it actually going to
- 1:00:16protect us as people and the oceans and
- 1:00:18nature in general.
- 1:00:20It could be very difficult to understand
- 1:00:22some of these policies, even though I've
- 1:00:24been studying them for quite some time
- 1:00:26and sometimes I get confused.
- 1:00:27Now let alone just actually seen the
- 1:00:29wording of an actual bill.
- 1:00:31I know here in Canada, it can be very
- 1:00:33complex to even just translate that.
- 1:00:35It's almost like translating Shakespeare
- 1:00:37into modern day English.
- 1:00:39It can be very complex and you can
- 1:00:40stumble on some of those words.
- 1:00:42Regardless of it, policies are extremely
- 1:00:43important and the problem
- 1:00:44that we're seeing right now,
- 1:00:45that was highlighted in an article at
- 1:00:47phys.org, which I'll
- 1:00:47link in the show notes,
- 1:00:49is that we are falling
- 1:00:50behind in the policy.
- 1:00:52A lot of the times it has to do with the
- 1:00:53government at hand or a
- 1:00:55government of the day,
- 1:00:56but we are falling behind in those
- 1:00:58policies, which is showing right now
- 1:01:00based on climate change,
- 1:01:02based on overfishing, based on plastic
- 1:01:05pollution, and we need to bring those up.
- 1:01:07And on today's episode of the how to
- 1:01:09protect the ocean podcast, we're going to
- 1:01:10talk about ways that we can
- 1:01:11catch up and ways that we can actually
- 1:01:13get people more connected
- 1:01:14to nature and the ocean.
- 1:01:16Let's start the show.
- 1:01:21Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 1:01:22exciting episode of the how
- 1:01:23to protect the ocean podcast.
- 1:01:24I'm your host, Andrew
- 1:01:25Lew, and this is the podcast.
- 1:01:25We find out what's happening with the
- 1:01:27ocean, how you can speak up for the
- 1:01:28ocean, what you can do to live for a
- 1:01:30better ocean by taking action.
- 1:01:32Now today's episode, we're going to be
- 1:01:33talking about policy and I know policies
- 1:01:35are really hard to get a handle of
- 1:01:37because it can be really complex.
- 1:01:39There's a lot of layers and sometimes the
- 1:01:40language of like a bill that's actually
- 1:01:42read through Congress or
- 1:01:44Parliament or wherever you live
- 1:01:46and whatever the government reads through
- 1:01:48can be really complicated.
- 1:01:49It's like converting
- 1:01:50Shakespeare into modern English.
- 1:01:51It's really difficult to kind of
- 1:01:53understand at the
- 1:01:53beginning when you first learn it.
- 1:01:55But once you get used to it, then you
- 1:01:56start to listen and we have a lot of
- 1:01:58experts in the how to protect the ocean
- 1:02:00network that really
- 1:02:01contribute to doing that.
- 1:02:02Andrew Thaler talked a little bit about
- 1:02:04some of the policies for deep sea mining
- 1:02:06just the other day and the other episode.
- 1:02:08And so we do a lot of
- 1:02:09stuff around this today.
- 1:02:11What I want to talk about was the fact
- 1:02:13that policies are not really catching up
- 1:02:15with the times with all the problems that
- 1:02:17we're seeing and there are a lot of
- 1:02:19things that I will go into.
- 1:02:20But before we do, I want to talk to you a
- 1:02:22little bit about the last couple weeks.
- 1:02:25Let's just take a breath because look,
- 1:02:28it's winter time up here and it gets
- 1:02:30cloudy and it gets cold and we don't go
- 1:02:33out as much and we see problems on TV.
- 1:02:35We see forest fires like wildfires out of
- 1:02:37control destroying homes.
- 1:02:39We see the introduction of a president
- 1:02:40that some of us may not want to see and a
- 1:02:43lot of the policies that
- 1:02:44they're pushing through.
- 1:02:45It could be a little tough to digest
- 1:02:47really tough to digest for a lot of us
- 1:02:49and it could be really hard on our mental
- 1:02:51health and I know mental
- 1:02:53health is a big big thing.
- 1:02:55And for me, especially over the last
- 1:02:56couple of years, you know, coming out of
- 1:02:58covid, I've seen a lot
- 1:02:59of changes in my life.
- 1:03:01I've lost my father a
- 1:03:02couple of years ago.
- 1:03:03I was getting really messed up in terms
- 1:03:04of my organization in terms of my focus
- 1:03:06in terms of my clarity and that really
- 1:03:08took a hit on my mental health of the
- 1:03:10last couple of years.
- 1:03:11And I started to wonder
- 1:03:12like how do I change this?
- 1:03:14You know, I saw the right people.
- 1:03:16I spoke to the right people spoke to my
- 1:03:18family and really started to gather like
- 1:03:20what in my life was so messy that I could
- 1:03:23clean up and help me
- 1:03:24focus on specific ways.
- 1:03:26It ran for a lot of things that are
- 1:03:28personal that I won't go into, but a lot
- 1:03:29of us go through this stuff where we just
- 1:03:31don't really get it after a while and we
- 1:03:34need that focus and clarity.
- 1:03:35Something that's really actually helped
- 1:03:36me is with Magic Mind and Magic Mind is
- 1:03:39like a little concoction that I take.
- 1:03:41It's like a little elixir that I take
- 1:03:42every morning and I just down it.
- 1:03:45It just keeps me focused.
- 1:03:46It keeps me clear.
- 1:03:47It allows me to get
- 1:03:48things done now on top of that.
- 1:03:50I've done a lot of organizing of my life
- 1:03:52and making sure that I've gotten rid of
- 1:03:53some of the things that I don't need to
- 1:03:55take on and that clog up my life and clog
- 1:03:57up up here in my mental health.
- 1:03:59But Magic Minds really helped me to focus
- 1:04:01through the day to get through the
- 1:04:03process and not lose focus to get
- 1:04:05distracted by other things in my life and
- 1:04:07focus on the task at hand because I do
- 1:04:09have a lot of tasks with the podcast.
- 1:04:11My job being a parent
- 1:04:12all that kind of stuff.
- 1:04:13It's a lot and so having Magic Mind in my
- 1:04:16life has really helped.
- 1:04:17It helps with just like a nice little
- 1:04:19dosage of caffeine that's
- 1:04:20released throughout the day.
- 1:04:22I don't like slam down Coca-Cola's
- 1:04:24anymore where I get like a shot of
- 1:04:25caffeine and I just crash.
- 1:04:27I don't feel like doing anything.
- 1:04:28And so now I'm able to do a lot of things
- 1:04:30in my life and to be honest for the first
- 1:04:31time in a long time.
- 1:04:32I actually feel great.
- 1:04:33This is a personal story of mine.
- 1:04:34I'm not saying this
- 1:04:35going to happen to you.
- 1:04:36I put in a lot of work but Magic Mind has
- 1:04:38really been there and
- 1:04:39really helped me focus in.
- 1:04:40So I want to provide you with something
- 1:04:42that could help you and
- 1:04:44this is just helps me as well.

- 1:04:47to buy your own, please

- 1:05:00highly recommend that you grab it.
- 1:05:02It's really important that you do for
- 1:05:03your own mental health and I think it'll
- 1:05:05help you with just your overall
- 1:05:06performance in life and trying to do
- 1:05:09better for yourself
- 1:05:10because it's done better for me.
- 1:05:11Put the link in the description below and
- 1:05:13you can click on that and
- 1:05:14hopefully it'll help you.
- 1:05:15I'd love to hear if it'll help you.
- 1:05:16All right.
- 1:05:17Let's get started with the show.
- 1:05:19This is going to be a lot of fun in a way
- 1:05:21because it's one of those things where we
- 1:05:23only talk about conservation.
- 1:05:25Like I love talking about ocean animals
- 1:05:27and seeing new things that are happening.
- 1:05:29Orcas hunting whale sharks
- 1:05:31and being able to discuss that.
- 1:05:32But at some point we have
- 1:05:34to discuss conservation.
- 1:05:35How we get conservation done.
- 1:05:38It really starts with understanding the
- 1:05:40ocean, the science behind understanding
- 1:05:42how we can protect the ocean.
- 1:05:44What is going on in the ocean that we
- 1:05:46need to protect
- 1:05:47better than we were before.
- 1:05:49A lot of the times it has to
- 1:05:50do with human disturbances.
- 1:05:52We have fishing.
- 1:05:53We have pollution.
- 1:05:55We have development along the coastline
- 1:05:57and then of course we have other indirect
- 1:05:59effects like climate change that we're
- 1:06:01contributing to and we need more
- 1:06:02understanding of the science allows us to
- 1:06:05collect that information and then
- 1:06:07understand the information and then
- 1:06:09nonprofit organizations and other groups
- 1:06:12and scientists will allow that
- 1:06:13information to be decided.
- 1:06:14And then we have the people who want to
- 1:06:15know like you want to know what's
- 1:06:17happening with the ocean how we can
- 1:06:19better protect it by watching or
- 1:06:20listening to this podcast.
- 1:06:22I provide that information to you the
- 1:06:23best I can by looking up
- 1:06:25information and bringing it to you.
- 1:06:27I'm not collecting it raw data like a lot
- 1:06:29of the other scientists are but I'm
- 1:06:30trying to tell you about what everybody's
- 1:06:32doing so we have a channel you can find
- 1:06:34out a lot of different things about.
- 1:06:35That's my goal is to get it out.
- 1:06:37A lot of other organizations have their
- 1:06:39own constituents their own audiences that
- 1:06:41they speak to on a regular basis whether
- 1:06:43it be through email whether it be through
- 1:06:45videos whether it be through reports or
- 1:06:48anything like that or community events
- 1:06:50and they help get that awareness raised
- 1:06:52so that you can know more about what's
- 1:06:55happening with the ocean once we have
- 1:06:57that knowledge then we start to look at
- 1:06:59what should we be doing about this and
- 1:07:01that's where we start to talk to our
- 1:07:02government and the governments will put
- 1:07:03in policies that will allow
- 1:07:05these things to be rectified.
- 1:07:08Right so for instance let's talk about
- 1:07:09plastic pollution right if we have
- 1:07:11plastic pollution going on we know that
- 1:07:13this plastic pollution in every piece of
- 1:07:15our ocean to the deepest depths that we
- 1:07:17know of all the way to the surface we
- 1:07:19know it's everywhere and we know that
- 1:07:20we're causing it this is not just a
- 1:07:22natural phenomenon that's happening we
- 1:07:23are causing it we are consuming more
- 1:07:26plastic we're using more single use
- 1:07:27plastic so what do we do we talk to the
- 1:07:29government we start putting policies on
- 1:07:31banning certain plastics that we find
- 1:07:33most in the environment whether it be in
- 1:07:35the ocean on a beach or in the ocean or in the ocean or in the ocean.
- 1:07:37Or in the mangrove or in a salt marsh or
- 1:07:40in a river system we find it everywhere
- 1:07:42just as a matter of fact if you ever walk
- 1:07:44down your neighborhood when is after
- 1:07:46garbage a it's a windy day using plastic
- 1:07:48all over the place we pick that up we get
- 1:07:50rid of it as a neighborhood as a
- 1:07:51community that helps each other out and
- 1:07:54we say hey you know what like let's keep
- 1:07:56this neighborhood clean so we don't see
- 1:07:57plastics we don't get animals hurt we
- 1:07:59don't get in our gardens we don't get in
- 1:08:01our systems and we can be happy well
- 1:08:04that's what we hope that the government
- 1:08:05will do by putting
- 1:08:06those policies in place.
- 1:08:07To clean the plastic pollution up this
- 1:08:09could work for pretty much every single
- 1:08:12thing the problem is that the
- 1:08:14government's don't always want to listen
- 1:08:16out you're probably wondering why would
- 1:08:18they want to listen to the people well in
- 1:08:20a democracy that we live in canada in the
- 1:08:22us in the UK in australia a lot of the
- 1:08:25other countries are listening to this
- 1:08:26where we get to vote for elected
- 1:08:28officials they should be
- 1:08:29listening to the people.
- 1:08:31They don't always they listen to the
- 1:08:32people who speak up the most that could
- 1:08:34be a small population to be a small
- 1:08:37percentage of the population says hey you
- 1:08:38know what I'm really really passionate
- 1:08:40about this and I want to see this being
- 1:08:42rectified and whatever that could be we
- 1:08:45you know it could be anything from the
- 1:08:46environment to human rights to.
- 1:08:49You know other policies that we are may
- 1:08:51not care about but people want those in
- 1:08:53place and that's how government works and
- 1:08:55hopefully the
- 1:08:55government puts it in place but.
- 1:08:58A lot of the times they don't listen
- 1:09:00because there are competing factors or
- 1:09:02competing interests that
- 1:09:04want something opposite.
- 1:09:06And this is where I feel that we're
- 1:09:08running behind and we'll talk about that
- 1:09:10in a second with in terms of the policies
- 1:09:12right this article talks about sort of
- 1:09:14like the interconnected crisis so we have
- 1:09:17biodiversity loss
- 1:09:18climate change and pollution.
- 1:09:19That are deeply intertwined so they're
- 1:09:21like I always call this the cumulative
- 1:09:23effects when one makes it the other one
- 1:09:25the worst and it makes the other one the
- 1:09:26worst and when they combine it just makes
- 1:09:28it that much worse it's really hard to
- 1:09:30untangle those cumulative effects and
- 1:09:33trying to figure out stuff.
- 1:09:35Either together or separately a lot of
- 1:09:37times we try and figure them out
- 1:09:38separately because again competing
- 1:09:39interest so it's leading to compound
- 1:09:41impacts on human health and well being
- 1:09:44which we know we've seen with climate
- 1:09:45change and force fires and hurricanes and
- 1:09:47floods and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:48We've seen those human effects affect the
- 1:09:50way people live where they live in the
- 1:09:52future it's going to be really
- 1:09:54interesting to see what happens over the
- 1:09:55next 30 years as this crisis continues to
- 1:09:58move without these policies catching up
- 1:10:00so if we address each of these policies
- 1:10:02individually that's going to be a problem
- 1:10:04we have to address these policies as they
- 1:10:07are intertwined so they
- 1:10:08have to address them together.
- 1:10:09There were some reports that were
- 1:10:11mentioned in the articles and they are
- 1:10:12two major assessments by the
- 1:10:14Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform
- 1:10:17on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
- 1:10:19which called IPBES highlight the need for
- 1:10:22transformative change the nexus
- 1:10:24assessment emphasizes the links between
- 1:10:26biodiversity loss water quality food
- 1:10:28security health risk and climate change.
- 1:10:31So they had some policy recommendations
- 1:10:33based on these two reports basically
- 1:10:36looking at integrating biodiversity
- 1:10:38considerations into sectors like
- 1:10:40agriculture fisheries forestry urban
- 1:10:42development infrastructure mining and
- 1:10:44energy the proposed actions include and
- 1:10:47I'm going to read these off because I
- 1:10:49think these are really important
- 1:10:50implementing nature based solutions in
- 1:10:52urban areas and
- 1:10:53reconnecting people with nature.
- 1:10:54That's a really important one if you
- 1:10:57think about how to connect people you
- 1:10:59look around if you're living in a bigger
- 1:11:00city you don't have as much nature as you
- 1:11:04do say in the country right in the
- 1:11:06country it's a little bit slower moving.
- 1:11:07It's not densely populated you don't have
- 1:11:10concrete everywhere you have a lot of
- 1:11:12maybe rolling meadows or maybe
- 1:11:14agricultural fields but it's quiet it's
- 1:11:17slowed down people tend not to move as
- 1:11:19quickly in and about because they're not
- 1:11:21in a rush to do things they've done their
- 1:11:22job maybe they're a farming community or
- 1:11:24fishing community and they maybe sit on
- 1:11:27their patio maybe sit with some neighbors
- 1:11:29or just relax after a hard day's work and
- 1:11:31they just kind of relax and they get to
- 1:11:32see the green they get to see the blue
- 1:11:35where they live and they get to enjoy.
- 1:11:37Just enjoy looking out right into the
- 1:11:40horizon and just be like wow that we live
- 1:11:41in a really cool place in cities where I
- 1:11:44live it's a lot faster you're trying to
- 1:11:46get your kids to all these different
- 1:11:47activities are trying to do this you're
- 1:11:49trying to do that you go out to dinner
- 1:11:50but if you look around.
- 1:11:51There's not as many green spaces that
- 1:11:54there are say in the country right is
- 1:11:56more densely populated there are more
- 1:11:57residences are more businesses their
- 1:11:59business plazas their business areas
- 1:12:01there's playgrounds and so forth but
- 1:12:03there's not a lot of green space as there
- 1:12:05is when you compare to the country and I
- 1:12:07feel as though and a lot of people are
- 1:12:10thinking the same thing if businesses had
- 1:12:12their way a lot of them developers
- 1:12:14especially they would turn those cities
- 1:12:17into more concrete areas because it's
- 1:12:18more profit for them the
- 1:12:20more they can sell on the
- 1:12:21land the better it is so case in point in
- 1:12:24Ontario they're gonna go very local here
- 1:12:26in Ontario where near I live they want to
- 1:12:29create a different highway now we have
- 1:12:31already the gardener like the QEW we have
- 1:12:35401 we have the four seven which is a
- 1:12:37toll route so we have three different
- 1:12:39highways that go through Toronto and they
- 1:12:42hit different parts of the city so one
- 1:12:45hits really really self by like the
- 1:12:47gardener in the QE hit right by the lake
- 1:12:49shore by Lake Ontario
- 1:12:50then you have in the lake
- 1:12:51the middle of the city is the 401 which
- 1:12:53is insanely busy so is the QE at times
- 1:12:55and the 401 seems to be busy all the time
- 1:12:57then we have the four seven which is a
- 1:12:58toll highway very expensive to use but a
- 1:13:01lot of people will use those back and
- 1:13:03forth and the trucks aren't allowed on
- 1:13:04there so the truck stay on the 401 there
- 1:13:06is more development that has gone on
- 1:13:08since I've been here since I've been on
- 1:13:10this earth north of Toronto and it's been
- 1:13:12now it's just blooming neighborhoods like
- 1:13:15they're just neighborhoods with malls and
- 1:13:17car washes and restaurants and everything
- 1:13:19they are like small
- 1:13:20cities in comparison to the
- 1:13:21Toronto but they are cities and there's
- 1:13:23more concrete than there was when I was
- 1:13:25younger I used to go up there and these
- 1:13:27be farm fields and things like that very
- 1:13:28little homes now it's like a bustling
- 1:13:31area but there are less green projects
- 1:13:33and what the Ontario government is
- 1:13:35proposing is like let's do a highway at
- 1:13:39the bottom of those cities but the top of
- 1:13:40Toronto that's free to ride it's Ontario
- 1:13:43owned but it goes right through a green
- 1:13:47space a number of green spaces in one
- 1:13:49part it goes through the
- 1:13:50green belt now the green belt
- 1:13:51is a protected area is owned off as a
- 1:13:54protected area to protect the rest of the
- 1:13:56watershed that goes down to Lake Ontario
- 1:13:58we have been messing up and I can't go
- 1:14:00into it now because we don't have the
- 1:14:01time we have been messing up the greater
- 1:14:03Toronto watersheds for a long time
- 1:14:05because of creating this city we've
- 1:14:07buried a lot of our rivers as they get
- 1:14:09close to downtown so they don't interrupt
- 1:14:11we've lost a lot of our green spaces they
- 1:14:13have become heavily polluted in certain
- 1:14:15areas they're getting better but still
- 1:14:17not the best and there's sometimes
- 1:14:19there's nothing we can
- 1:14:19do about it or there's not
- 1:14:21enough priority to do something about it
- 1:14:23now we're talking about putting a highway
- 1:14:25into a section of green space that is
- 1:14:27protected to make sure that we protect
- 1:14:29the rest of the integrity of the
- 1:14:30watershed and why are they doing this
- 1:14:33because what's been uncovered in some
- 1:14:34scandals is that the Ontario premier Doug
- 1:14:37Ford has his buddies who got the
- 1:14:40contracts to build on those areas that
- 1:14:42are going to make like billions of
- 1:14:43dollars just from the development of that
- 1:14:45area there are other green spaces that
- 1:14:47are not used that are not protected that
- 1:14:49could be used for this high
- 1:14:51way but they refuse to use that one
- 1:14:52because it's not land that will make
- 1:14:54these developers even more rich and more
- 1:14:55billions of dollars so this is the
- 1:14:58problem when we're talking about
- 1:15:00implementing nature based solutions in
- 1:15:01urban areas and reconnecting with nature
- 1:15:03we keep taking away our green spaces we
- 1:15:06keep taking away access to our blue
- 1:15:09spaces in 20 years ago as downtown
- 1:15:12Toronto was being built and even here in
- 1:15:14Burlington where I am another local
- 1:15:15example and I'm sure this has happened in
- 1:15:17other cities buildings were put up and it
- 1:15:19was sold with hey you have access to
- 1:15:21beautiful views of Lake Ontario of
- 1:15:23whatever coastline you live off of and
- 1:15:26then like 10 years later another building
- 1:15:27gets built right in front of your view so
- 1:15:30now you have a view of another building
- 1:15:31that has a view of the ocean or of the
- 1:15:33Lake Ontario of a great lake or whatever
- 1:15:35that might be whatever coastline you're
- 1:15:36on this is the problem that we keep
- 1:15:38seeing is the access to more money takes
- 1:15:41away all the stuff that we're doing to
- 1:15:42protect and putting in nature based
- 1:15:44solutions but making sure that having our
- 1:15:46politicians abide by the regular zoning
- 1:15:49and not changing it for green spaces
- 1:16:03ininson growth and I from different
- 1:16:13methods nature studied is extremely
- 1:16:18important they'll use other means to get by there really good at
- 1:16:21let's plan it out and
- 1:16:22let's just make sure this area
- 1:16:24will never get chosen to be developed on
- 1:16:27because it's a green space.
- 1:16:28It's very important to this
- 1:16:29area that we have green spaces.
- 1:16:31We need to continue
- 1:16:32to keep nature abett us
- 1:16:34because that's what regulates our lives.
- 1:16:37We need to keep that intact.
- 1:16:38We need to recognize
- 1:16:39that the dollar value
- 1:16:40should not matter about these places.
- 1:16:43These places are forever protected.
- 1:16:45They should be forever protected, right?
- 1:16:47And that's really important.
- 1:16:49Measure, and the third one,
- 1:16:50measuring and reporting on natural assets
- 1:16:52to manage and enhance ecosystem services.
- 1:16:55So in other words, making sure that when
- 1:16:57you see these green spaces and blue
- 1:16:59spaces and the coastal spaces,
- 1:17:01right, making sure that we're monitoring
- 1:17:02them, we're saying,
- 1:17:03"Hey, are they healthy?
- 1:17:04Is this what we need? Is this what we
- 1:17:05need to keep around? Can we keep around
- 1:17:07more? Do we need to restore more?
- 1:17:08How are they keeping those services that
- 1:17:10they provide intact?
- 1:17:12And if that's changing, what can we do to
- 1:17:14bring them back or enhance those areas?
- 1:17:17That's extremely important.
- 1:17:18Restoring carbon-rich ecosystems such as
- 1:17:21forests, soils, and mangroves.
- 1:17:23Now, we're talking a little bit of land
- 1:17:24and sea here because it really matters
- 1:17:26when we talk about pollutants
- 1:17:27because pollutants usually come from the
- 1:17:28land and they end up into the sea.
- 1:17:30Talk about plastic pollution, bad water
- 1:17:32quality with chemicals
- 1:17:33and nutrients and so forth.
- 1:17:34We need to make sure
- 1:17:35that land is available.
- 1:17:37A lot of times, basic watershed
- 1:17:39maintenance, basic forestry maintenance
- 1:17:41can really help in this.
- 1:17:43But the priority has to
- 1:17:44be there by the government.
- 1:17:45You can't put policies in to take an
- 1:17:47entire area down for a residential build
- 1:17:49or for a commercial build, right?
- 1:17:51Like we see a lot with these massive
- 1:17:53warehouses that are showing up in Canada,
- 1:17:55the US and all over the world
- 1:17:57that have like huge plants or storage
- 1:17:59warehouses, drop shipping warehouses
- 1:18:02becoming really popular these days.
- 1:18:04And we're seeing land being used that are
- 1:18:06normally natural and contributing to our
- 1:18:09ecosystem services, right?
- 1:18:10We need to make sure that we enhance
- 1:18:12those and restore those
- 1:18:14that have been taken away
- 1:18:15because you'd be surprised at how much
- 1:18:16has been taken away.
- 1:18:17Seeing a salt marsh or a mud flat may not
- 1:18:19look appealing to many people, but it's
- 1:18:22extremely important into coastlines
- 1:18:24and making sure that we're maintaining
- 1:18:25the intactness, the importance of those
- 1:18:28coastlines and the
- 1:18:29protection, not only to our coastline,
- 1:18:31but also for the animals that run those
- 1:18:33ecosystems that provide
- 1:18:34us with those services.
- 1:18:35Nice views, but also just regular
- 1:18:37ecosystem services that provide
- 1:18:39protection,
- 1:18:39biodiversity, stability and so forth.
- 1:18:41And I think it's really important.
- 1:18:43Also, carbon rich ecosystems, mangroves,
- 1:18:45seagrasses, those as soils, forests,
- 1:18:48those are really important.
- 1:18:50They're so important now more than ever
- 1:18:51because of the amount of pollution that
- 1:18:53we're putting into the air,
- 1:18:54the amount of greenhouse
- 1:18:54gases that we're putting in.
- 1:18:56We need more absorption.
- 1:18:57We need more tools to absorb.
- 1:18:58If we don't put those in, we can't put
- 1:19:00those in, especially when we're talking
- 1:19:01about marine-based or aquatic-based.
- 1:19:04Seagrasses, mangroves hold up to like
- 1:19:06four to 10 times as much carbon than
- 1:19:08land-based forest trees, right?
- 1:19:10Trees.
- 1:19:11So this is important that we do both.
- 1:19:13And it's expensive to restore.
- 1:19:14It's less expensive to protect and we
- 1:19:15should be protecting those and restoring
- 1:19:17those in other areas as well.
- 1:19:19Now, this is the last one is probably the
- 1:19:20most important is
- 1:19:21supporting indigenous food systems.
- 1:19:23This is not just supporting indigenous
- 1:19:24food systems, but we as people that have
- 1:19:27taken over land from indigenous people in
- 1:19:29the histories that we have, right?
- 1:19:31In our country's histories.
- 1:19:32We have lost a lot of the knowledge or we
- 1:19:34haven't taken up a lot of the knowledge
- 1:19:36that have kept indigenous communities
- 1:19:38living here for hundreds
- 1:19:40of years, maybe even more.
- 1:19:42The way they take care of the land and
- 1:19:46they integrate their economies or their
- 1:19:49way of life into the land and protecting
- 1:19:52that land and doing it in harmony.
- 1:19:54We need to learn from that.
- 1:19:56Like I can't even tell you how important
- 1:19:58it is that we need to learn
- 1:19:59from those systems, right?
- 1:20:01We need to have workshops.
- 1:20:03We need to incorporate more indigenous
- 1:20:06communities into putting these policies
- 1:20:08together so that we can really understand what is a way to build that.
- 1:20:12And that's a true caretaker of this, you
- 1:20:15know, like for me in North America, what
- 1:20:17indigenous people call Turtle Island.
- 1:20:19It's an important aspect.
- 1:20:21It's an important way to put this
- 1:20:23together economy and environment.
- 1:20:25So how do we live off the land where we
- 1:20:27can be prosperous, but also how do we
- 1:20:28maintain the land so we can continue to
- 1:20:30be prosperous at this point right now?
- 1:20:33We're just destroying the land and we
- 1:20:34don't care about the harmony.
- 1:20:36We don't care about the environment.
- 1:20:37That's how many of our
- 1:20:38companies are working.
- 1:20:40And we need to incorporate more of that
- 1:20:42indigenous culture into our practices so
- 1:20:45that we can actually take care of the
- 1:20:47land and have a good economy.
- 1:20:49Doesn't necessarily mean that our economy
- 1:20:51has to grow all the time, but it's really
- 1:20:53important that we do this kind of stuff.
- 1:20:55That's sort of my opinion on all and what
- 1:20:57this article discusses.
- 1:20:58It's extremely important thing to do when
- 1:21:00we look at policies, but we really need
- 1:21:02to catch up and we
- 1:21:03need to catch up quickly.
- 1:21:05And our politicians have to be smart.
- 1:21:07They have to listen
- 1:21:08to the experts, right?
- 1:21:11And us as citizens, we have to pressure
- 1:21:13the government to listen to the experts.
- 1:21:16We have to say, look, we may not
- 1:21:18understand all the science and everything
- 1:21:19that goes on in the environment or
- 1:21:20everything that goes on in economies and
- 1:21:22politics and everything like that.
- 1:21:23But there are people who do listen to
- 1:21:25those people and let that drive our
- 1:21:27policy, not just the opinions of
- 1:21:29politicians based on not listening to
- 1:21:33people and just
- 1:21:33forming their own opinion.
- 1:21:35Okay, for instance, Donald Trump, a
- 1:21:38number of years ago when he was
- 1:21:39president, he stated he was in front of a
- 1:21:41panel of forestry people during the last
- 1:21:43big wildfire scares or
- 1:21:45wildfires are always scary.
- 1:21:46But the wildfires when he was president
- 1:21:48and he was listening to some scientists
- 1:21:50and scientists like we just
- 1:21:51can't ignore the science here.
- 1:21:52We need to do something more about
- 1:21:53climate change rails.
- 1:21:54These forest fires are going to get out
- 1:21:56of hand and more people are going to get
- 1:21:58hurt and lose their homes.
- 1:21:59Donald Trump looked the guy in the eye.
- 1:22:01Actually, he didn't even
- 1:22:01look the guy in the eye.
- 1:22:02And he just looked straight and he says,
- 1:22:04well, you know, I'll tell you it's going
- 1:22:05to get cooler in the next few years.
- 1:22:07I'm telling you that right now.
- 1:22:07It's going to get cooler.
- 1:22:09No scientist that has any kind of
- 1:22:11reputation, no NASA scientist, no
- 1:22:13government scientist at the time were
- 1:22:15saying that it's going to get cooler.
- 1:22:17We were saying it's going to get hotter.
- 1:22:18Everybody was saying
- 1:22:18it's going to get hotter.
- 1:22:19The entire world knew it
- 1:22:21was going to get hotter.
- 1:22:21We were hitting records and records and
- 1:22:22we have continued to hit records and
- 1:22:24record breaking years
- 1:22:26every year for heat.
- 1:22:28And look what happened just not long ago,
- 1:22:30like a month ago, and
- 1:22:31it's still kind of going on.
- 1:22:32Devastating wilds across California
- 1:22:34floods due to hurricanes that are earlier
- 1:22:37and more severe that scientists have been
- 1:22:39particularly for a long time hit in 2024.
- 1:22:42This stuff is happening, but we are keep
- 1:22:44continuing to put politicians in place
- 1:22:46that are like, no, I don't
- 1:22:47think it's going to happen.
- 1:22:49I'm going to ignore everybody else.
- 1:22:50He goes, well, I just don't think the
- 1:22:51science knows it doesn't make sense.
- 1:22:54It just doesn't make sense from a
- 1:22:55prosperous life, like in
- 1:22:57the future perspective.
- 1:22:58Right. And even now,
- 1:22:59it does not make sense.
- 1:23:00We need to put politicians in power where
- 1:23:03they listen to experts.
- 1:23:05That's all.
- 1:23:06That's really what it comes down to.
- 1:23:08It doesn't matter
- 1:23:08what party they're from.
- 1:23:09Every party the leader should know we're
- 1:23:11going to listen to the experts and make a
- 1:23:13decision based on what the experts say.
- 1:23:15That's really what it goes
- 1:23:16and what the people feel.
- 1:23:17And that's really what it comes down to.
- 1:23:19And policies need to catch
- 1:23:20up according to this article.
- 1:23:22And I agree with it.
- 1:23:23And I want to share that with you.
