Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 0:18Speaker 3: He's Paul Paps, and we are in full October mode.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Beautiful weather this weekend. Did you enjoy it, Paul?
- 0:25Speaker 4: Absolutely not. I was on the couch the entire time,
- 0:27Speaker 4: but I heard it was lovely out.
- 0:28Speaker 2: No, it was really nice. What are we coming up today?
- 0:30Speaker 2: A lot.
- 0:31Speaker 4: We got the MLB playoffs with the Brewers. We're going
- 0:33Speaker 4: to touch on that. Yogi Roth of NBC Sports with
- 0:35Speaker 4: the college football weekend. But first, Perloff. an interesting, impactful
- 0:39Speaker 4: weekend of NFL football.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll let you get started. Who's your biggest winner?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Because there are a lot of heavyweights that played this weekend.
- 0:44Speaker 3: What did you come out of on Monday morning saying
- 0:46Speaker 3: the biggest winner of Week 4 so far?
- 0:48Speaker 4: I'm going to go with the Chiefs, and I know
- 0:50Speaker 4: it's kind of obvious that the Chiefs are 4-0, but
- 0:52Speaker 4: that was a tough win. They lost two wide receivers,
- 0:55Speaker 4: Rasheed Rice and Thornton, and that Thornton injury was really bad.
- 0:58Speaker 4: But they played well. Kenneth Walker, 177 in two touchdowns.
- 1:02Speaker 4: He's the sure thing of the whole offense. And I
- 1:04Speaker 4: think that holding off a young, exciting team like the
- 1:07Speaker 4: Raiders was a very good win. National TV, everybody saw it.
- 1:10Speaker 4: And also, you've got to factor in other things. They
- 1:13Speaker 4: still had these injuries before the trade deadline. So right now,
- 1:16Speaker 4: Thornton is down. Are they going to look at Tyreek Hill?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 1:19Speaker 4: But remember, in the Trent McDuffie trade, they have an
- 1:22Speaker 4: extra third-round draft pick, the Chiefs. So they can parlay that.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Trade deadline is in four weeks. They're going to need
- 1:27Speaker 4: help for Mahomes. But that was a good game. And
- 1:29Speaker 4: I don't think it was an awful game for the Raiders.
- 1:31Speaker 2: No, I came out of that liking the Raiders. So
- 1:33Speaker 2: back to the Chiefs.
- 1:34Speaker 3: If they don't get a wide receiver back, would you
- 1:38Speaker 3: be like the Rams and trade high picks to get
- 1:40Speaker 3: a receiver?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:41Speaker 4: You're in a win-now situation. Anytime Mahomes is on your roster,
- 1:44Speaker 4: it's win this season. And you don't need that extra
- 1:47Speaker 4: third-round draft pick. If you can go get Brian Thomas Jr.
- 1:50Speaker 4: from the Jaguars, grab him. Why not?
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, Dan had really interesting comments about Kenneth Walker, the
- 1:56Speaker 3: running back and MVP. We'll get to that later. But
- 1:59Speaker 3: I worry that they're using him too much. Emma Johnson,
- 2:02Speaker 3: his backup, a rookie running back, didn't play at all, barely.
- 2:05Speaker 3: He had one catch yesterday. Can Ken Walker carry the
- 2:08Speaker 3: ball 23 times a game at this? He was so
- 2:10Speaker 3: good last night, you couldn't take him out of the game.
- 2:12Speaker 3: But I worry about a running back who Seattle said,
- 2:15Speaker 3: you know what, we don't want to carry him 20
- 2:17Speaker 3: times a game and we'll even let him go tomorrow.
- 2:18Speaker 3: The Chiefs are just all in, as many carries as
- 2:21Speaker 3: he can handle.
- 2:21Speaker 4: By the way, did you see those jump cuts? I
- 2:23Speaker 4: don't think he gets enough credit for his jukiness, if
- 2:26Speaker 4: that's a word. I think not only can Kenneth Walker
- 2:28Speaker 4: do it, I think he's going to have to for
- 2:30Speaker 4: the next two weeks. If they're down two wide receivers,
- 2:32Speaker 4: I know they've got decent players, but I think he
- 2:35Speaker 4: carries the ball more in October than he did in September.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I don't think that's a good idea. Look at their schedule.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The charge is whatever, but at Seattle and at Denver. Now,
- 2:44Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker already torched Denver, but this is at Denver.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I think they have good defenses on the schedule. I
- 2:50Speaker 3: don't know if I would overuse him, but you need
- 2:52Speaker 3: him in the postseason. You don't need him right now, Paul.
- 2:54Speaker 4: I see. I think you step on the gas with
- 2:56Speaker 4: Ken Walker for a couple reasons. The Bills lost. And
- 2:59Speaker 4: if the Bills lost, you're trying to get home field
- 3:02Speaker 4: advantage in the AFC playoffs. I do think that long term.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I think that home field advantage against the Bills nullifies
- 3:09Speaker 4: the Bills.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Well, Andy Reid said after week two that we want
- 3:12Speaker 3: to minimize Walker's workload. And then what does he do?
- 3:15Speaker 3: He just gives it auto. And this is Andy Reid.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Andy Reid doesn't even like to use running backs. He's
- 3:19Speaker 3: a pass all the time guy.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Who's your winner of the weekend?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Okay, my biggest winner of the weekend is Dallas. Now,
- 3:24Speaker 3: the Cowboys had a tough loss in Rio that everyone
- 3:27Speaker 3: watched to the Ravens. Now, in past years, I think
- 3:30Speaker 3: Dallas sort of folds in the 10 after that game.
- 3:33Speaker 3: They came out and played really tough against Houston. Down
- 3:36Speaker 3: by 10, come back. Now, here's the thing. We know
- 3:39Speaker 3: the offense is great. We know CeeDee Lamb is amazing.
- 3:42Speaker 3: You cannot cover him. We know that Dak Prescott's going
- 3:44Speaker 3: to be in the MVP conversation. All you need is
- 3:46Speaker 3: some defense. And that's what they got.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Some defense.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Joey Porter Jr. didn't get targeted barely at all. Deron
- 3:53Speaker 3: Bland's a bit of a problem on the other corner.
- 3:55Speaker 3: But they made some big stops at the end where
- 3:57Speaker 3: Sean Gary finally got a sack. What I'm impressed by
- 4:00Speaker 3: is Brian Schottenheimer had these guys ready to play. In
- 4:03Speaker 3: the past, I'm not sure Cowboys coaches could do that.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Yeah, and the thing about the Cowboys defense, I look
- 4:08Speaker 4: at them as at the halfway point, where are they?
- 4:10Speaker 4: You know, Downs is a new guy. Gary's a new guy.
- 4:13Speaker 4: If they can get those guys up to speed. They
- 4:15Speaker 4: do seem better against the run, and that was their
- 4:17Speaker 4: goal last year with the Parsons trade. Again, I don't
- 4:19Speaker 4: think they're ever going to be, I shouldn't say ever,
- 4:21Speaker 4: not this season, be a great defense. But that second
- 4:23Speaker 4: half by their offense, Dak wasn't getting touched. He was
- 4:26Speaker 4: sitting back there. You saw that clip we just showed.
- 4:28Speaker 4: He's just sitting back there looking. CeeDee Lamb all day,
- 4:31Speaker 4: Pickens less so. but 28 points against the supposed best
- 4:34Speaker 4: defense in the league.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Well, one thing they have to do is slow the
- 4:37Speaker 3: game down a little. Not so fast, as we like
- 4:38Speaker 3: to say. So they do need to run the ball
- 4:40Speaker 3: with Javante Williams to keep that defense off the field.
- 4:43Speaker 3: But it's a new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, from the Eagles.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I think it's going to take some time to master
- 4:48Speaker 3: his scheme, the Vic Fangio scheme, as.
- 4:50Speaker 2: We like to say.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But I think the Cowboys' defense is going to improve
- 4:53Speaker 3: to the point where they're good. Here's the other thing.
- 4:55Speaker 3: The NFC East is struggling, Paul. The Giants aren't going
- 4:58Speaker 3: to do anything. The Commanders are down to their third-string quarterback.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And I think the Eagles' injuries are a problem. So
- 5:04Speaker 3: the road is wide open for Dallas to win the division.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I think that's another team that will be active at
- 5:08Speaker 4: the trade deadline. If you look at the rest of
- 5:09Speaker 4: their division, we talked about this last week, you compare
- 5:12Speaker 4: yourself to the rest of the division, and they don't
- 5:14Speaker 4: seem that threatening. You may not have the best team
- 5:16Speaker 4: in the division, but clearly you could host a home
- 5:18Speaker 4: playoff game.
- 5:18Speaker 2: All right, you're up. Who's the next winner?
- 5:20Speaker 4: I'm going to give a bounce-back win, a big win,
- 5:22Speaker 4: for the Patriots and mostly Drake May. Drake May had
- 5:25Speaker 4: a rough September. I mean, as rough as it could be.
- 5:27Speaker 4: People forgot he was in the Super Bowl last year.
- 5:29Speaker 4: I just checked. He was in the Super Bowl last year.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I remember.
- 5:33Speaker 4: You watched it?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 4: One touchdown, six picks in September, as bad as it gets,
- 5:37Speaker 4: but insane. He wasn't great against Buffalo. He was good
- 5:42Speaker 4: when it mattered in the fourth quarter. He did have
- 5:43Speaker 4: two turnovers. This game could have easily gone the other way,
- 5:46Speaker 4: and we talk about, hey, Drake may have played better,
- 5:49Speaker 4: but in another loss. Last few plays of the game,
- 5:52Speaker 4: he made the plays. The one thing that still bothers
- 5:54Speaker 4: me is when a play isn't there, he takes off
- 5:56Speaker 4: and runs, which is... In theory, okay, because he runs
- 5:59Speaker 4: very well, but he does it too often. He picks
- 6:01Speaker 4: the ball, and then he's kind of looking around too much.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Wow, look at the quarterback on the other side. Isn't
- 6:05Speaker 2: that Josh Allen?
- 6:06Speaker 4: Josh Allen, though, is a house. He can get away
- 6:08Speaker 4: with whatever he wants.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Drake May's not small.
- 6:10Speaker 4: No, he's not small, but I would say Drake May,
- 6:13Speaker 4: he kind of put everyone off his back for a week,
- 6:15Speaker 4: and he said so in the postgame. When he asked
- 6:17Speaker 4: how you feel after the win, he said, it's relieving.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 4: He actually said what everyone thought. Like, this was a
- 6:23Speaker 4: relief win, not an excitement win.
- 6:24Speaker 3: At halftime, I was with, you know, people in Boston
- 6:27Speaker 3: Radio want a bench.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 3: At halftime of that game, I was thinking to myself,
- 6:30Speaker 3: Drake May is in big trouble. Then the second half,
- 6:33Speaker 3: it was the old Drake May. I disagree a little bit.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I think it starts with his legs. When he runs,
- 6:37Speaker 3: he gets a little more confidence.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Right. I know what you mean about going through his progression.
- 6:41Speaker 4: I want him to go to that later in the process.
- 6:43Speaker 3: You know, I remember coming out, people always said, watch
- 6:46Speaker 3: out for Drake May's legs.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I think it's an underrated aspect. All right, I'm going
- 6:49Speaker 2: to go up next.
- 6:50Speaker 3: My big winner is San Francisco. I said coming into
- 6:52Speaker 3: this weekend, Paul, that San Francisco-Denver could be a Super
- 6:55Speaker 3: Bowl preview.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I maintain that.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I don't know about Denver, but San Francisco looks like
- 6:59Speaker 3: they're ready to go. And let's hear it for the
- 7:01Speaker 3: old guys.
- 7:02Speaker 2: McCaffrey, awesome.
- 7:04Speaker 3: George Kittle, tight end screen touchdown to seal the game.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Mike Evans, solid. Debo looks rejuvenated. Trent Williams holding it
- 7:11Speaker 3: down a left tackle.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Wild.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Then you got Warner on defense. We'll get Bosa back eventually.
- 7:17Speaker 3: This is the geriatric team, and I love it. I
- 7:20Speaker 3: believe the Niners are playing the best football of any
- 7:23Speaker 3: team in the league right now.
- 7:24Speaker 2: They proved it.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Denver, even this Denver team, who's not really gelling on offense–
- 7:29Speaker 3: is a tough assignment.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Their defense is so good.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Once Patrick Chetan went out for Denver, then Brock Purdy
- 7:35Speaker 3: just did whatever he wanted.
- 7:36Speaker 2: He looked amazing in the second half.
- 7:38Speaker 4: It was a classic Broncos game, save it for the
- 7:40Speaker 4: fourth quarter. But the problem is Bo Nix, he didn't
- 7:42Speaker 4: do it in the fourth quarter. And the thing about Purdy,
- 7:44Speaker 4: I would like to check this stat. He was not
- 7:46Speaker 4: sacked and didn't throw an interception the first four games
- 7:48Speaker 4: of the season.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 7:49Speaker 4: That's as good as it gets. He's sitting back there
- 7:51Speaker 4: and just picking and choosing his guys. 11 touchdowns, one pick, 126.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I mean, Sacks taken zero.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I heard a comp that I don't love.
- 8:00Speaker 4: For Purdy?
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Someone said he's a new Joe Montana. Now, he's different
- 8:04Speaker 3: than Montana. Montana was the ultimate West Coast thing. Brock
- 8:06Speaker 3: Purdy runs around a lot. He will buy time in
- 8:09Speaker 3: the pocket like there's no tomorrow. Like the touchdown to
- 8:11Speaker 3: Debo yesterday.
- 8:12Speaker 4: You know I don't like easy comps just because he's
- 8:14Speaker 4: a 49er.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:15Speaker 4: But I will say that early Montana was a bit
- 8:18Speaker 4: of a scrambler runner more than a runner runner.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't buy it. I think Brock
- 8:22Speaker 2: Purdy's superpower is his legs.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Okay, but Brock Purdy is physically unimpressive. No offense. I'm
- 8:28Speaker 4: saying when you see him on the street, he looks
- 8:29Speaker 4: like he's 15. He's not the biggest or strongest guy,
- 8:32Speaker 4: and he's not the fastest nor slowest guy. That's just
- 8:35Speaker 4: like Joe Montana.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I will tell you one thing that I think is different.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I think he's thicker than you think. I think he's
- 8:40Speaker 3: a little bigger. You put him next to Bryce Young.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Bryce Young is a midget. I think he's a thick dude.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I've never thought about his thickness, but now I will.
- 8:48Speaker 3: No, he's stronger than you might think, and I understand
- 8:50Speaker 3: what you're saying.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think Brock is a little more durable. All right.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Helmet stickers, Paul. There's a lot to go around.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I'll go first. This is really obvious. Let's go back
- 8:58Speaker 4: to the Dallas Cowboys game. Look, I don't know what
- 9:00Speaker 4: the scouting report is when you're getting ready to play
- 9:03Speaker 4: the Cowboys, but you've got to think, maybe keep an
- 9:06Speaker 4: eye on C.D.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Lamb.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Well, he had 21 targets, 17 catches, 189, and a touchdown.
- 9:11Speaker 4: He was targeted 21 times in the game. There's one
- 9:13Speaker 4: for C.D.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Lamb.
- 9:14Speaker 4: I'm sure he's excited about this, but It's one of
- 9:17Speaker 4: those games where you're watching like, OK, you get the
- 9:19Speaker 4: point now. They're going to CD. They're not really running
- 9:22Speaker 4: the ball because they don't have to. And it became
- 9:24Speaker 4: pitch and catch.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Absolutely. And George Pickens is a good beat. He's a
- 9:27Speaker 2: good Robin to see these.
- 9:28Speaker 4: They combine for 19 catches.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Well, yeah. But Pickens had the big catch. I love Pickens.
- 9:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I'm going to go to a guy that I've been
- 9:35Speaker 3: talking about all season long. It's about time he won
- 9:37Speaker 3: the sticker. That is, of course, the Patriots' Efton Chisholm.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 9:40Speaker 4: You were always a big fan.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Efton Chisholm.
- 9:43Speaker 3: He had a one-handed catch to beat the Bills that
- 9:45Speaker 3: I still can't believe. Obviously, I don't know if you
- 9:48Speaker 3: heard Chauncey Gardner-Johnson's comments about it. This is Odell Beckham
- 9:53Speaker 3: from someone I've never heard of. Unbelievable play by Efton Chisholm,
- 9:57Speaker 3: and he definitely deserves a sticker.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Yeah, he sure does, and he's got real... on the
- 10:00Speaker 4: helmet for a lot of stickers i didn't know much
- 10:02Speaker 4: about this guy i think he's eastern washington one double
- 10:05Speaker 4: a fcs okay can you comp him without using a
- 10:08Speaker 4: white small wide receiver danny amandola Julian Edelman, are we going?
- 10:13Speaker 4: We got to go there, right?
- 10:14Speaker 2: I have no idea. Yeah, no, I can't do that.
- 10:17Speaker 2: It's too early in the morning. Do you have one?
- 10:19Speaker 4: No, of course not.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Coming up next, Paul has a warm take on a
- 10:23Speaker 3: team he's been talking about for a long time, the
- 10:25Speaker 3: Milwaukee Brewers. And I dive into my new superstar quarterback.
- 10:29Speaker 3: That's next, Not So Fast.
- 10:30Speaker 4: All right, Pearl, back on Not So Fast. Here is
- 10:36Speaker 4: the midday pick-me-up. Brewers by the ninth.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Bango.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Gets through. Seeing eye singles, I like to call it.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Play at the plate.
- 10:45Speaker 2: No dice.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Jackson Churio, Mason Miller. The place goes wild.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that was fun.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Let me walk you through that at bat. Mason Miller,
- 10:52Speaker 4: the flamethrower for the Padres. 101, 102, 104, 101, and
- 10:58Speaker 4: Jackson Churio puts it right through the box.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Miz hit 105, too.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Yep.
- 11:04Speaker 2: These numbers are kind of silly, Paul.
- 11:06Speaker 6: It's fun.
- 11:06Speaker 4: That was a great ending for the Brewers. I'm going
- 11:07Speaker 4: to stay with the Brewers. It's time for warm takes.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Pass and pro-off, not so fast.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I'll go first.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Warm take time. If you're a Brewers fan, you've got
- 11:15Speaker 4: to be out of your mind this morning. It feels
- 11:17Speaker 4: like your time. You have 103 wins. You're up 2-0
- 11:20Speaker 4: against the Padres in the playoffs. Even the Dodgers have
- 11:23Speaker 4: a loss in the playoffs. You may not have to
- 11:24Speaker 4: face them. Mizorowski, 105 with his first pitch of the night.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You've made the playoffs eight of the last nine years.
- 11:30Speaker 4: If not now, when? The Brewers are kind of this
- 11:33Speaker 4: feel-good team, and they've been a feel-good team for a while.
- 11:36Speaker 4: And sometimes a team needs to get over the hump.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I go back to the 15 Cubs. Very good team.
- 11:41Speaker 4: They couldn't get past people. They won it the next year.
- 11:44Speaker 4: This feels like destiny year for the Brewers. If somehow
- 11:46Speaker 4: you could avoid the Dodgers in round two, that would
- 11:49Speaker 4: be fantastic. But you can't count on that. You have
- 11:51Speaker 4: to think to yourselves, we're going to beat them. You've
- 11:53Speaker 4: got to go back to 1982. They were in the
- 11:55Speaker 4: World Series. You know every player on that team, the
- 11:57Speaker 4: 82 Brewers.
- 11:58Speaker 2: That was one of my favorite teams as a little kid.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 12:01Speaker 4: But the Dodgers are right ahead. If you look at
- 12:03Speaker 4: this play, bango.
- 12:06Speaker 2: There it is.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Brewers fans were out of hand. Everything has their place
- 12:10Speaker 4: in time. It feels like the Brewers' place in time.
- 12:12Speaker 4: A couple wins, get through, face the Dodgers, take down
- 12:15Speaker 4: the Dodgers, get to the World Series. And you may
- 12:18Speaker 4: only get this once in a generation or once in
- 12:20Speaker 4: every other generation. But Brewers, this is your time. Make
- 12:22Speaker 4: it happen.
- 12:23Speaker 3: No, you've been selling me the Brewers, and I'm totally buying.
- 12:25Speaker 3: This feels like the year. That being said, if Atlanta
- 12:28Speaker 3: finds a way to beat the Dodgers, then Atlanta can
- 12:31Speaker 3: find a way to beat anybody. I know it's 1-1,
- 12:34Speaker 3: but it's interesting to me that when you crunch the numbers,
- 12:36Speaker 3: Atlanta has a shot in this series.
- 12:38Speaker 4: You know, I know we're a long way away from
- 12:40Speaker 4: this World Series, but let's say somehow it's White Sox
- 12:43Speaker 4: versus Brewers in a World Series. Who's the feel-good team?
- 12:47Speaker 2: Oh, I mean, the White Sox got one in 05.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Right, but the White Sox.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I think the Brewers still... Still.
- 12:52Speaker 4: You can't have two feel-good teams. Can you have two
- 12:53Speaker 4: feel-good teams?
- 12:54Speaker 3: Well, everyone likes the Brewers in my generation. It'd be
- 12:56Speaker 3: Robin Youn and Paul Molitor. We all love those guys.
- 12:59Speaker 4: 2016 World Series, Cleveland Indians at the time versus the Cubs.
- 13:03Speaker 4: That was two feel-goods.
- 13:04Speaker 3: And that was a heck of a series. Okay, I'm
- 13:07Speaker 3: going to go to the NFL for my warm take.
- 13:09Speaker 3: The Jacksonville Jaguars. Talking about feel-good, talking about breaking through.
- 13:13Speaker 3: This could be the year. They're a little Milwaukee Brewers-esque, Paul.
- 13:16Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:17Speaker 3: The Jacksonville Jaguars, top five in defense, and they have
- 13:20Speaker 3: plenty of offense. Now, what impressed me was when they
- 13:24Speaker 3: lost a close game to Denver, another AFC contender, it
- 13:27Speaker 3: looked like they didn't know how to close games. On Sunday,
- 13:30Speaker 3: they closed the games against Cincinnati and Joe Burrow.
- 13:33Speaker 2: It was the defense.
- 13:35Speaker 3: The defense got to Burrow eventually, and that's a hard assignment, Paul.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I was really impressed with their defense, and Trevor Lawrence
- 13:41Speaker 3: looks great with Liam Cohen. Reminds me a little bit
- 13:44Speaker 3: of last year's Seattle, because you had Mike McDonald with Seattle,
- 13:47Speaker 3: a coach that not everybody knew, but seemed to really,
- 13:50Speaker 3: the team bought into him. Same with Liam Cohen, fiery guy,
- 13:54Speaker 3: offensive guru, as it were. So I think everything is
- 13:56Speaker 3: moving in the right direction for Jacksonville. I'm really excited.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I know the Chiefs are 4-0, but I got to
- 14:02Speaker 3: tell you, when I look at the AFC picture, and
- 14:04Speaker 3: if I could have a mulligan, I would strongly consider
- 14:06Speaker 3: the Jags.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I would give you a mulligan. My comp for the
- 14:08Speaker 4: Jaguars this year is Indiana University football last year.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Love it.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Kurt Cignetti, this wild guy from James Madison who no
- 14:14Speaker 4: one bought into. Remember he said, Google me, all I
- 14:16Speaker 4: do is win. Remember Liam Cohen's press conference? He did
- 14:19Speaker 4: the Duval thing and everyone was like, this guy's nuts.
- 14:21Speaker 4: He's doing well, and I've seen him in interviews. He's
- 14:23Speaker 4: a really smart guy.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Well, Nick Sirianni was psychotic in his first press conference.
- 14:27Speaker 2: He won a Super Bowl.
- 14:28Speaker 4: He was sweating all over the place.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I think that's the new trend is be really weird
- 14:31Speaker 2: in your introductory press conference.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're crazy, we make fun of it during
- 14:35Speaker 4: that day, but you're great later.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I really like Liam Cohen. The funny thing, Liam
- 14:39Speaker 2: Cohen can go totally bananas.
- 14:41Speaker 3: But he's mild-mannered most of the time. A lot like
- 14:43Speaker 3: the Bears coach, Ben Johnson. There's a new wave of
- 14:45Speaker 3: coaches coming. I don't want to break down. They have
- 14:48Speaker 3: a great defensive coordinator, And this could be the next
- 14:51Speaker 3: team with a young head coach that we don't know.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Great win for your Jaguars. All right, my next warm
- 14:55Speaker 4: take is this. I like to call these hangover games
- 14:57Speaker 4: in college football. You win a big game, you lose
- 15:00Speaker 4: the next week. Remember Ole Miss beating LSU a couple
- 15:02Speaker 4: weeks ago? Then they gave it up versus Florida. It
- 15:05Speaker 4: happened the other day. Florida takes down Ole Miss last week.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Everyone gets on the Florida bandwagon. Then Florida doesn't do
- 15:11Speaker 4: very well at all going against Mississippi State. This happens
- 15:16Speaker 4: a lot.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Against Missouri.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Yeah, Missouri, my bad. And this happens a lot. And
- 15:21Speaker 4: teams that you want to jump on the bandwagon of,
- 15:23Speaker 4: Mississippi State was one of those. They were the flavor
- 15:25Speaker 4: last week. Mississippi State, Camario Taylor. And they just get
- 15:28Speaker 4: the doors blown off them versus Bama. You get a
- 15:31Speaker 4: week to yourself in college football. And Florida had it
- 15:35Speaker 4: last week, and Mississippi State had it last week. And
- 15:37Speaker 4: they just absolutely, you know what, the bed this weekend.
- 15:39Speaker 4: And it's tough because now you go to the back
- 15:41Speaker 4: of the line. We have short attention spans in the media.
- 15:44Speaker 4: And right now, Florida, you've got to wait. Mississippi State,
- 15:46Speaker 4: you've got to wait. You're going to need a big
- 15:47Speaker 4: October win to get our attention again. Florida and Mississippi State,
- 15:50Speaker 4: they have some big games in October. But when you
- 15:53Speaker 4: lose after we love you, we don't love you for
- 15:56Speaker 4: a while. So take the day off. But now it's Missouri.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Everyone's going to be on the Missouri bandwagon for a
- 16:00Speaker 4: couple days and see how they do. See if they
- 16:02Speaker 4: can keep it rolling or they go to the back
- 16:04Speaker 4: of the line.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Well, can I... Share a theory.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Maybe the SEC is just not that good. Maybe Florida
- 16:10Speaker 3: beating Ole Miss. Maybe Ole Miss isn't that good. Maybe
- 16:12Speaker 3: Ole Miss beating LSU. Maybe LSU is not that good.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Maybe these teams are all medium.
- 16:16Speaker 4: So, okay, so the second tier of the LSU, of
- 16:19Speaker 4: like the SEC is not that great, but what about
- 16:22Speaker 4: Alabama and Georgia?
- 16:23Speaker 2: Well, that's a two.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Alabama and Georgia, I don't know that they're that great.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Georgia hasn't played anybody. And Alabama, since when do we
- 16:29Speaker 3: credit Alabama for beating Mississippi State? What world am I
- 16:32Speaker 3: living in where that's a big win?
- 16:33Speaker 4: Well, Alabama has suffered the hangover from last year's when
- 16:37Speaker 4: they didn't do so well against Indiana, and that's being nice.
- 16:40Speaker 4: When they got blown out in the playoffs versus Indiana,
- 16:42Speaker 4: that was debilitating on the national schedule. And so Alabama
- 16:45Speaker 4: has to almost run the table to get back in
- 16:47Speaker 4: the thick of it.
- 16:48Speaker 2: But Missouri. Missouri's always ranked, but I don't know. You know,
- 16:51Speaker 2: you lose 45-10 or whatever it was. I'm disappointed. I
- 16:54Speaker 2: think the SEC might be overrated.
- 16:56Speaker 3: And listen, I know no one's going to like that
- 16:58Speaker 3: down south, but I think in Big Ten country they
- 17:00Speaker 3: would totally agree.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Huge down south.
- 17:01Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to talk about a former SEC
- 17:03Speaker 3: quarterback who now looks like he did in college at Alabama,
- 17:07Speaker 3: and that.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Is Bryce Young. You know, I was on the fence
- 17:09Speaker 2: with Bryce Young.
- 17:11Speaker 3: He is officially declared good. He's declared good. I'm putting
- 17:13Speaker 3: the Perloff stamp of good. Now, I'll take it a
- 17:17Speaker 3: step further.
- 17:18Speaker 2: And this might be controversial.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Maybe it's because it's a 20-year anniversary of what happened
- 17:22Speaker 3: in New Orleans when the Saints came back from Katrina.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I think he might be Drew Brees-like. Now, he reminds
- 17:29Speaker 3: me of Drew Brees in the sense he's not big
- 17:31Speaker 3: and he always knows where to go with the football.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Last night against Detroit, he started out 11 for 11.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Seems like he's finally mastered that offense. And like Drew
- 17:40Speaker 3: Brees was with Sean Payton, I think he's a good
- 17:42Speaker 3: marriage with Dave Canales in Carolina. I think their defense
- 17:46Speaker 3: is terrible. Lost their two starting cornerbacks. So that's going
- 17:49Speaker 3: to help Detroit. created a lot of shootouts, and I
- 17:51Speaker 3: think Bryce Young, who is the leading passer in the
- 17:53Speaker 3: NFL right now, will keep up these big numbers, and
- 17:56Speaker 3: that's very Drew Brees.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Why not, Paul? Why can't Bryce Young be Drew Brees?
- 18:00Speaker 4: Well, I think he can, and if you watched that
- 18:02Speaker 4: game yesterday, he was just dealing all over the field,
- 18:04Speaker 4: not getting rushed. It goes back to his rookie year
- 18:06Speaker 4: and his second year. He was declared a bust, but
- 18:08Speaker 4: he was set up to fail. Go back to that
- 18:10Speaker 4: trade when Carolina gave all that draft capital to the
- 18:13Speaker 4: Bears to move up.
- 18:14Speaker 2: They had no.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Roster around them. They got rid of DJ Moore. They
- 18:16Speaker 4: had no offensive line, and everyone's like, This guy's a bust. No,
- 18:20Speaker 4: the team around him was the bust. He was good.
- 18:22Speaker 4: He fought through it. He played well. If you said
- 18:25Speaker 4: right now, who would you give a big extension to?
- 18:27Speaker 6: C.J.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Stroud or Bryce Young?
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Where do you think the money would be?
- 18:31Speaker 3: Well, Stroud actually is playing very well right now.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I think both get him.
- 18:34Speaker 4: The fact that that's a debate. The fact that that's
- 18:36Speaker 4: a really fair debate when C.J. Stroud, two and a
- 18:38Speaker 4: half years ago, was the future of the sport.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Well, the reality is it's the NFL. Both are getting
- 18:42Speaker 3: big money, probably. But Bryce Young, you're right, it's been
- 18:45Speaker 3: incredibly impressive. You know why there was no pass rush
- 18:48Speaker 3: last night? Because Bryce Young got rid of it, and
- 18:50Speaker 3: he kept running away from Aidan Hutchinson. I'm sure if
- 18:52Speaker 3: you're a Detroit fan, you're quite miserable. But that's what
- 18:54Speaker 3: he can do. It's a very smart offense right now.
- 18:57Speaker 4: He's also a smart runner. He doesn't take unnecessary hits.
- 18:59Speaker 6: So far. So far.
- 19:00Speaker 2: We're probably jinxing him.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah, of course. His rookie year, he was all over
- 19:04Speaker 4: the place. But now, when he runs, zip right out
- 19:07Speaker 4: of bounds. Like early Russell Wilson, don't be a tough guy.
- 19:09Speaker 3: And it might also be Ted Arroyo and McMillan is
- 19:11Speaker 3: that good. So maybe his number one wide receiver is
- 19:14Speaker 3: helping a lot.
- 19:14Speaker 4: 12 catches for him.
- 19:15Speaker 6: All right.
- 19:16Speaker 4: It's time for Not So Good. What was the worst performance,
- 19:19Speaker 4: worst player, whatever it may be. We try not to
- 19:21Speaker 4: go loser. Not so good from the weekend, specifically NFL.
- 19:25Speaker 4: I will go first. I think we agree on this one.
- 19:27Speaker 4: This was a tie. We both put in. These Chargers.
- 19:29Speaker 2: 0-4.
- 19:31Speaker 4: At some point, we can't hope for the best in
- 19:33Speaker 4: the next week. I know they were playing the Seahawks,
- 19:35Speaker 4: and that's a really good defense. But you need one
- 19:37Speaker 4: game where you outperform the expectations. They were terrible yesterday
- 19:41Speaker 4: from the jump. Pick on the first play. They had
- 19:43Speaker 4: some plays in the second half where they made it interesting,
- 19:45Speaker 4: but it was too late. It was too late.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I worry about Justin Herbert. He's a big target.
- 19:50Speaker 3: At the end of the game, he got hit in
- 19:51Speaker 3: the ribs, and I can't believe he stayed in the game.
- 19:54Speaker 3: He looked like he had broken a rib, and he
- 19:56Speaker 3: probably did, but he was playing tough guy. I think
- 19:58Speaker 3: they're so desperate to do something. Justin Herbert is using
- 20:01Speaker 3: his legs a lot. They want to win so badly
- 20:03Speaker 3: that he's risking his health.
- 20:04Speaker 4: All right, I got a bonus not so good for you.
- 20:06Speaker 4: The Eagles' fourth quarter against the Rams, they had the
- 20:09Speaker 4: Rams dead to rights. They had a 10-point lead. How
- 20:11Speaker 4: not so good was the Eagles' loss?
- 20:12Speaker 3: You mean when you go 0 for 12 on third
- 20:14Speaker 3: down and blow a massive lead when you have third
- 20:17Speaker 3: and goal?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Of course, it was terrible. Everything about it was awful, Paul.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Is there any doubt? How not so good? Really not
- 20:25Speaker 2: so good because of the injuries. That's what worries me
- 20:27Speaker 2: about the Eagles. Forget the loss. The Rams are a
- 20:29Speaker 2: great team.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Lane Johnson was out for undisclosed reasons, the right tackle.
- 20:33Speaker 3: That worries me big time. Defensive injuries, offensive injuries. When
- 20:37Speaker 3: Saquon goes out, I actually didn't think they should have
- 20:40Speaker 3: been leading that game. I was shocked they were leading
- 20:42Speaker 3: the whole way because they weren't doing anything. They still
- 20:44Speaker 3: could have gotten away with a win, so that's frustrating.
- 20:46Speaker 3: But I have much bigger picture worries about the Eagles.
- 20:49Speaker 4: All right, a lot more NFL coming up. But coming
- 20:50Speaker 4: up next, we hit the college football weekend. Our boy
- 20:53Speaker 4: Yogi Roth of NBC Sports, the entire college football weekend
- 20:56Speaker 4: and next week. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 21:01Speaker 2: Paul Paps.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Now, Paul, I understand you got some college football in
- 21:04Speaker 3: person this weekend.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 21:05Speaker 4: I went to a big-time, huge, rough-and-tumble matchup. Brown hosting URI, Rhodey.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Oh, boy. Who came out on top?
- 21:13Speaker 4: You know who came out. Rhodey football. They brought home
- 21:15Speaker 4: the old crab cake or whatever the word is. It
- 21:17Speaker 4: was great. Good football.
- 21:18Speaker 3: All right, let's go to the absolute opposite end of
- 21:20Speaker 3: the college football spectrum and bring in our guest, NBC
- 21:24Speaker 3: Sports College football analyst Yogi Roth. Yogi, I want to
- 21:27Speaker 3: start down south. Kamario Taylor, Keelan Russell, showdown, Alabama, Mississippi State.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Turned out it didn't make much of a showdown. It
- 21:36Speaker 3: was all Keelan Russell. What was your take off that game?
- 21:39Speaker 6: Well, it was so fun to watch.
- 21:40Speaker 7: You know, last time we talked as you guys kicked
- 21:42Speaker 7: off your brand new show, we talked about the quarterback development.
- 21:45Speaker 7: And I get to see these guys at 16. Both
- 21:47Speaker 7: of these guys we had at our summer camp called
- 21:49Speaker 7: the Elite 11. So think like American Idol for high
- 21:51Speaker 7: school quarterbacks. Both of them were there. You could tell
- 21:54Speaker 7: how talented they were. And I'm so just intrigued to
- 21:56Speaker 7: see what would happen in the game. You know, sadly,
- 21:59Speaker 7: Camario goes down with an injury. And then you look
- 22:01Speaker 7: at the other side and Keelan Russell in Alabama. They
- 22:04Speaker 7: just look like it's year three, right? Like you look
- 22:06Speaker 7: at Kalen DeBoer and everything he's done there. I think
- 22:08Speaker 7: Keelan Russell was special. He's one of those few guys
- 22:10Speaker 7: you put in like select company at that stage in
- 22:13Speaker 7: high school, like Tua, Trevor, Jameis. Like there's a couple
- 22:17Speaker 7: guys that we've seen when they were 16, 17 years old.
- 22:19Speaker 7: They're like, oh yeah, look out. Like they're coming. He
- 22:22Speaker 7: was definitely in that conversation. Just the type of young
- 22:25Speaker 7: man that he was, the mentality. And then you watch
- 22:27Speaker 7: him throughout the season. He just keeps progressing. Not surprised
- 22:30Speaker 7: in Ryan Grubb's offense, what Kalen DeBoer is doing.
- 22:32Speaker 6: So huge win.
- 22:33Speaker 7: For the Crimson Tide, and I don't think people are
- 22:35Speaker 7: talking about them enough. I think they're a legit national
- 22:37Speaker 7: championship contender.
- 22:38Speaker 6: I think they'll get better as the season goes on.
- 22:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up, because Alabama's getting
- 22:42Speaker 4: very little coverage this year, which is odd, but it's
- 22:44Speaker 4: the way they finished the playoffs last year. And they're
- 22:47Speaker 4: playing against Georgia next weekend, and Georgia seems to be
- 22:50Speaker 4: in the same boat. All Georgia's doing is comfortably winning
- 22:52Speaker 4: football games, but they don't have a Matthew Stafford. They
- 22:55Speaker 4: don't even have a defensive star. It's like they're not star-laden,
- 22:58Speaker 4: and they're not getting the coverage. How good is Georgia?
- 23:01Speaker 6: I think they're a really good team.
- 23:02Speaker 7: And I think that's a huge part of, obviously, finding
- 23:04Speaker 7: success in this era of college football, being connected. You
- 23:08Speaker 7: don't see a lot of loaves. You watch them play.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Not any finger pointing. The culture is clearly set. But
- 23:13Speaker 7: when I look at Alabama, I think they're the more
- 23:14Speaker 7: talented team. It's going to be a challenge. We know that,
- 23:17Speaker 7: especially when you look at their recent history. But I
- 23:19Speaker 7: like Alabama in this one. I think that Kalen DeBoer's
- 23:22Speaker 7: got a phrase that he's had since he's been a
- 23:24Speaker 7: head coach. I remember it back at Fresno State, of course,
- 23:26Speaker 7: at Washington and Alabama. You're built for this. And I
- 23:30Speaker 7: think that their team has that. When I watch them,
- 23:32Speaker 7: I'm just saying to myself, man, this is a team
- 23:35Speaker 7: that I think lessons learned from last year in the
- 23:37Speaker 7: Rose Bowl when they got smoked by Indiana. We all
- 23:39Speaker 7: know that game. I think this team is going to
- 23:42Speaker 7: march forward. It won't be easy. But I also think
- 23:44Speaker 7: in offensive football, the trends this year and the last
- 23:47Speaker 7: couple years, if you've got playmakers, which they do, if
- 23:50Speaker 7: you can push the ball down the field and you've
- 23:51Speaker 7: got a guy.
- 23:51Speaker 6: A quarterback that can handle it, I think they win. Now,
- 23:54Speaker 6: it's not easy.
- 23:54Speaker 7: It's his first start in this type of game, in
- 23:56Speaker 7: this environment, of course. But I like Keelan Russell. I
- 23:59Speaker 7: think Alabama gets one here.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Yogi, I know you know quarterbacks really well.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Watching Notre Dame-North Carolina this weekend, and I watched CJ Carr,
- 24:07Speaker 3: maybe not the most talented player in college football, but
- 24:10Speaker 3: he looks like an NFL guy to me. At the
- 24:12Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, he looks like he knows what he's doing.
- 24:15Speaker 3: What do you think his future is?
- 24:17Speaker 6: Yeah, we had him two weeks ago, called the Purdue game.
- 24:19Speaker 7: And you just watch him operate at the line of scrimmage,
- 24:21Speaker 7: everything's shoulders and above.
- 24:23Speaker 6: He's getting in and out of so many cool plays.
- 24:25Speaker 7: And I love when cameras and the microphones can capture,
- 24:29Speaker 7: you know, his dialect, but also his clap. So a
- 24:31Speaker 7: lot of times teams that play in the gun, Notre
- 24:33Speaker 7: Dame plays a lot of shotgun offense primarily.
- 24:35Speaker 6: You're just a clap, right? It's just one clap and
- 24:37Speaker 6: here comes the ball.
- 24:38Speaker 7: But he's fake clapping, three claps, like clap, show your hands,
- 24:41Speaker 7: like all these little things. Why is he doing it?
- 24:44Speaker 7: He's doing it to try to get a tell. What's
- 24:45Speaker 7: Belichick's defense doing? What's Miami going to be doing? What's
- 24:49Speaker 7: BYU going to be doing? Those are little nuanced elements
- 24:53Speaker 7: where he can see just a foot up, a foot back,
- 24:55Speaker 7: a lean by a safety.
- 24:57Speaker 6: And that's why you're seeing him be absolutely surgical.
- 25:00Speaker 7: I know his numbers aren't crazy stupid, but to me,
- 25:03Speaker 7: He's played at the highest level of any quarterback in
- 25:06Speaker 7: the country this year.
- 25:07Speaker 4: I hate to interrupt you, but I'm glad you explained that.
- 25:10Speaker 4: I thought he was going like this to try to
- 25:11Speaker 4: get him to snap the ball like they weren't getting
- 25:13Speaker 4: the ball fast enough.
- 25:15Speaker 7: Yeah, no, it's fascinating to watch. We broke it down
- 25:16Speaker 7: in our game. If you want to go back and
- 25:18Speaker 7: watch the Purdue game, congrats Purdue on a win. They
- 25:19Speaker 7: finally got a conference win. But he's here and it's boom.
- 25:23Speaker 7: And then it's boom, boom. And then it's boom, clap.
- 25:25Speaker 7: Fake your hands.
- 25:26Speaker 6: Fake it.
- 25:27Speaker 7: He's doing all these little things, but he's getting intel.
- 25:29Speaker 7: His center's getting intel. His backs are getting intel. It's
- 25:32Speaker 7: a veteran-laden group in that regard. They've got to find
- 25:34Speaker 7: who's going to be their lead back, but maybe they
- 25:36Speaker 7: won't have one. Maybe they'll have three of them. We
- 25:37Speaker 7: saw the freshman go off against Carolina, but I really
- 25:40Speaker 7: just like this team because they very rarely have negative plays.
- 25:44Speaker 6: I think as you go into.
- 25:45Speaker 7: Bigger games, bigger environments, college football playoff, if Notre Dame
- 25:49Speaker 7: can handle business like we think and find their way
- 25:51Speaker 7: to the postseason this.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Season, you can't have negative plays.
- 25:54Speaker 7: And At times, you can overanalyze, and I think you've
- 25:58Speaker 7: also watched Notre Dame go fast and say, hey, forget it.
- 26:00Speaker 6: We've got a great play. Let's move. One clap and
- 26:03Speaker 6: let's go, or vocal cadence and let's roll.
- 26:05Speaker 7: I think that type of unique duality within C.J. Carr
- 26:10Speaker 7: and this offense is going to allow them to continue
- 26:12Speaker 7: to have tremendous success.
- 26:13Speaker 4: I know you got NBC this weekend, USC at Penn State.
- 26:17Speaker 4: How vital was USC beating Washington this weekend for Lincoln-Riley?
- 26:21Speaker 7: Man, you know, I heard you guys talk about your weekend, right?
- 26:23Speaker 7: You went to a great game. I had a weekend
- 26:25Speaker 7: off too. So I took my son, our oldest son,
- 26:27Speaker 7: to SC Washington.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:28Speaker 7: And the final play of the game is like right
- 26:30Speaker 7: in front of us. And we're watching this thing shake out.
- 26:32Speaker 7: Both of those programs, backs against the wall. They both
- 26:35Speaker 7: needed to win. It's the same deal this weekend for
- 26:37Speaker 7: Penn State, backs against the wall. And I think it's
- 26:40Speaker 7: the same way for USC. They've got to try to
- 26:42Speaker 7: win their next two, which won't be easy. And then
- 26:45Speaker 7: can you host Ohio State on Halloween night? And now
- 26:48Speaker 7: it's very similar to what happened against Oregon. Place will
- 26:50Speaker 7: be rocking. You'll have an opportunity to make a statement.
- 26:52Speaker 7: We'll see what will happen. But it will not be easy.
- 26:54Speaker 7: I think the biggest takeaway I had was that SC
- 26:57Speaker 7: was able to regroup.
- 26:59Speaker 6: I mean, I live in L.A., man.
- 27:00Speaker 7: The last week in advance of this past weekend's game,
- 27:03Speaker 7: the vitriol was crazy. And it was because the hype
- 27:07Speaker 7: was also crazy. If they beat Oregon, the roof was
- 27:09Speaker 7: coming off. They lose in a dramatic fashion, off the field,
- 27:13Speaker 7: all the stuff on the sideline, as I'm sure you
- 27:15Speaker 7: talked about all week long.
- 27:16Speaker 6: They were able to come together.
- 27:18Speaker 7: And Todd Blackledge and I were talking about earlier this
- 27:20Speaker 7: week on our podcast of everybody thinks that the culture
- 27:23Speaker 7: was fractured after that hit and after what transpired on
- 27:27Speaker 7: the sidelines. I'm around that program probably as much as
- 27:29Speaker 7: anybody in America, and I just don't believe that. I
- 27:32Speaker 7: don't believe that. I think they're a really tight-knit group,
- 27:34Speaker 7: and I'm glad that they showed it. The way they
- 27:36Speaker 7: had to come from behind, down two scores. They had
- 27:38Speaker 7: that defensive sack, cause fumble. for a touchdown, big play,
- 27:42Speaker 7: lights up the Coliseum, the game flips. And now can
- 27:45Speaker 7: they go do it on the road where they've had
- 27:46Speaker 7: a lot of trouble? And this is a really proud
- 27:48Speaker 7: Penn State team with Rocco Beck, and they have underperformed
- 27:51Speaker 7: based on, I think, what we thought they would be.
- 27:53Speaker 7: So SC is going to get their very best in
- 27:55Speaker 7: a whiteout. Man, I can't wait.
- 27:57Speaker 6: I grew up in Pennsylvania. I can't wait to go
- 27:58Speaker 6: back and watch this thing.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Awesome. Okay.
- 28:01Speaker 3: You mentioned Ohio State. Jeremiah Smith, number one in Heisman
- 28:04Speaker 3: odds right now. Can he hold on to that spot?
- 28:06Speaker 3: He sure seems like he's way ahead of everybody else
- 28:09Speaker 3: for the big award.
- 28:11Speaker 6: You know, as a voter, he's got everybody's attention. I'll
- 28:15Speaker 6: say that.
- 28:16Speaker 7: He reminds me of Larry Fitzgerald, my old roommate from
- 28:19Speaker 7: 20 years ago when he was so dominant. And he
- 28:21Speaker 7: should have won the Heisman that year. Now, social media
- 28:24Speaker 7: wasn't popping. You know, you didn't have the campaigns that
- 28:27Speaker 7: people have. And Pitt was an Ohio State. I hate
- 28:29Speaker 7: to even admit that, but that's just the case. And
- 28:31Speaker 7: that's the reality. And I don't think there's an analyst
- 28:33Speaker 7: in the country or voter that is going to argue
- 28:36Speaker 7: that Jeremiah Smith's the best overall player.
- 28:39Speaker 6: I don't think anybody would have argued it last year.
- 28:41Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 28:41Speaker 7: I mean, he was on my final ballot because I
- 28:43Speaker 7: thought he was that dominant. So, yeah, I think if
- 28:45Speaker 7: he can continue to put up 200-yard games, of course.
- 28:48Speaker 7: But I think we also have to look at reality.
- 28:50Speaker 7: There's not a team on Ohio State's schedule that isn't
- 28:53Speaker 7: going to try to take him away. And Ohio State's
- 28:55Speaker 7: smart enough to not just force him the ball in
- 28:57Speaker 7: double coverage. They've got other weapons. So I think it's
- 29:00Speaker 7: going to be a storyline for sure. But is he
- 29:02Speaker 7: the most outstanding player in college football right.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Around the midseason mark? No question. He might have been
- 29:07Speaker 6: as a freshman.
- 29:08Speaker 7: As a sophomore, and then I think this year in
- 29:10Speaker 7: his third year with Ohio State.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I mean, Yogi, I assumed you were like that in
- 29:14Speaker 2: high school and college.
- 29:16Speaker 3: You had a lot of Jeremiah Smith in you.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 29:19Speaker 7: Yeah, the Suburban League in Lackawanna County was popping.
- 29:22Speaker 6: Off, man. But we threw the ball, so you pretended
- 29:24Speaker 6: like you were him. I'm sure we would now.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Awesome. Yogi, thanks for the time. We'll talk to you soon, bud.
- 29:29Speaker 4: See you, bud.
- 29:30Speaker 6: You got it. Congrats on everything, fellas.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 29:32Speaker 4: It's a great topic. They were talking about it earlier
- 29:34Speaker 4: today on the Dan Patrick Show. Jeremiah Smith, he's going
- 29:36Speaker 4: to be one of the great wide receiver prospects of
- 29:38Speaker 4: all time. And I was thinking... who is the best
- 29:40Speaker 4: college wide receiver you've seen in your lifetime? I'll go first.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Larry Fitzgerald's up there because he didn't seem like the
- 29:46Speaker 4: fastest guy, but he was completely unstoppable at Pitt and
- 29:49Speaker 4: just dominated people. Calvin Johnson at Georgia Tech, they didn't
- 29:53Speaker 4: throw the ball.
- 29:53Speaker 2: They never threw it. I know.
- 29:54Speaker 4: So it was kind of weird. And then I'm going
- 29:56Speaker 4: to go really, really old school. There was a Michigan
- 29:58Speaker 4: wide receiver in the early 80s named Anthony Carter, number one.
- 30:02Speaker 4: He was the Tyreek Hill, a skinnier version of Tyreek
- 30:04Speaker 4: Hill back in the 80s.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I'm well aware because you talk about Anthony Carter all
- 30:07Speaker 2: the time.
- 30:08Speaker 3: You know what I was thinking about the best prospect
- 30:10Speaker 3: I ever saw, and I said this, was Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 30:13Speaker 2: At Ohio State.
- 30:14Speaker 4: That's weird.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Who looked a lot like Jeremiah Smith, but then he's
- 30:16Speaker 3: been a disappointment in the NFL, so I'm not sure
- 30:18Speaker 3: if I'm going to stick with that. By the way,
- 30:21Speaker 3: Malachi Toney in Miami is not so far from this conversation.
- 30:23Speaker 3: He's a little younger. He is elite, too, but he's
- 30:26Speaker 3: not Jeremiah Smith.
- 30:27Speaker 4: And we can't leave off Keyshawn Johnson. He was at
- 30:29Speaker 4: USC big, strong, and fast. He had everything.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah, awesome.
- 30:33Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, Dan talks to Gerald McCoy,
- 30:37Speaker 3: who weighs in on the slowest quarterback he ever faced.
- 30:40Speaker 3: You want to hear this answer, not so fast.
- 30:46Speaker 1: This season averaging 162. That's third and just under 30
- 30:51Speaker 1: points per game. That's because of Kenneth Walker. That's the difference.
- 30:57Speaker 1: How is he not in the top five for MVP? Now,
- 31:01Speaker 1: I know it's a quarterback award, but this guy is
- 31:04Speaker 1: controlling the Chiefs offense. He's changed the Chiefs offense. He
- 31:09Speaker 1: is a power back with speed. There aren't many of
- 31:13Speaker 1: those in the NFL, but he is their go-to guy.
- 31:17Speaker 1: He's the difference maker. And look, DraftKings, they can have
- 31:21Speaker 1: their odds here, but If I ask Patrick Mahomes who's
- 31:25Speaker 1: the MVP on your team, he's not saying himself. He's
- 31:28Speaker 1: going to say Kenneth Walker Jr.
- 31:30Speaker 2: III.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff right here
- 31:35Speaker 4: on NBC Sports Now. This is the Clip Joint. That
- 31:37Speaker 4: was DP talking about Ken Walker of the Chiefs. He
- 31:40Speaker 4: was September VP on this show.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you call that September MVP.
- 31:44Speaker 4: It does frustrate you that a guy who's not a
- 31:47Speaker 4: quarterback really can't win the MVP. The last one was
- 31:50Speaker 4: Adrian Peterson. That was 2012 MVP. 2015, I think it was,
- 31:54Speaker 4: and he had to have knee surgery and run for
- 31:56Speaker 4: basically 2,000 yards.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Well, why is it frustrating, though? It's a sport where
- 32:00Speaker 3: the quarterback touches the ball every play. He should be
- 32:02Speaker 3: the MVP. He's the highest-paid player. He's the most important player.
- 32:05Speaker 4: But I would say that valuable also matters with how
- 32:08Speaker 4: the team has changed. What's new on this team? They
- 32:10Speaker 4: don't have any wide receivers left in the building almost,
- 32:13Speaker 4: and Kenneth Walker is running like this every week. He
- 32:16Speaker 4: is the most valuable guy in this roster. He's the
- 32:19Speaker 4: new guy.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Okay, that is true, and I agree with that point.
- 32:22Speaker 3: But if you took Patrick Mahomes off this team, they're
- 32:27Speaker 3: in big trouble. You could probably get by without Kenneth
- 32:29Speaker 3: Walker in a pitch.
- 32:31Speaker 4: So Offensive Player of the Year only counts for wide
- 32:33Speaker 4: receivers and running backs.
- 32:34Speaker 2: It's like the Cooper Cup Award, exactly. You know what, though?
- 32:37Speaker 3: If Ken Walker keeps his up, he will get real
- 32:39Speaker 3: MVP votes. I saw those odds on the Dan Patrick
- 32:42Speaker 3: Show graphic. You're telling me Lamar Jackson has a better
- 32:45Speaker 3: chance than Kenneth Walker?
- 32:46Speaker 4: It's just like you said. I think Vegas calls it
- 32:48Speaker 4: like they see it. They know you can't get it.
- 32:49Speaker 4: And so one of our... Dylan, who handles the betting here,
- 32:52Speaker 4: he even said they put Kenneth Walker on there just
- 32:54Speaker 4: to get some found money because they know anyone who
- 32:57Speaker 4: bets on Kenneth Walker to win the MVP is giving
- 32:59Speaker 4: their money away.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:00Speaker 3: And he's good, don't get me wrong, but I have
- 33:02Speaker 3: trouble believing he can keep up this pace.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Is he that good, Paul? Well, no, he is.
- 33:06Speaker 4: I mean, he's in his prime. He is entering running
- 33:08Speaker 4: back prime. He didn't run for... He didn't have like
- 33:10Speaker 4: five 300-carry seasons. This guy... You paid him. You got
- 33:13Speaker 4: him for three years. See what happens.
- 33:15Speaker 2: You know, I had a little theory.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Remember last year with Seattle, Zach Charbonnet got hurt, and
- 33:18Speaker 3: they used Kenneth Walker primarily. Walker led them in the
- 33:22Speaker 3: playoffs and obviously led them in the Super Bowl win.
- 33:24Speaker 3: That Charbonnet injury told the Seahawks, go all Walker. I
- 33:28Speaker 3: wonder if the Seahawks regret not doing Walker all the
- 33:30Speaker 3: time because he's obviously a bell cow running back.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I wonder if they regret not spending the money on him.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. I don't think they knew.
- 33:37Speaker 3: He was this good, even as good as he was.
- 33:39Speaker 3: I get the sense that they didn't know he's one
- 33:41Speaker 3: of the top three backs.
- 33:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Gerald McCoy was on the Dan Patrick show today and
- 33:46Speaker 3: had a great answer when Dan asked him, which QB
- 33:48Speaker 3: did he face that was the least athletic?
- 33:52Speaker 5: Probably Tom Brady.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 5: I mean, he's got incredible pocket feet. His pocket presence
- 34:00Speaker 5: is ridiculous. But that moving and running, my goodness. Tom,
- 34:05Speaker 5: I love you.
- 34:06Speaker 6: But my brother, wait, slower than Peyton?
- 34:11Speaker 5: You know what, Dan?
- 34:12Speaker 6: You might be right.
- 34:13Speaker 5: That dang Peyton, he played football like he had already
- 34:17Speaker 5: had hip replacements.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Like he had hip replacements.
- 34:24Speaker 3: I could have listened to that conversation for another hour.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Gerald McCoy is so funny.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I think the Mannings are so historically slow as a family,
- 34:30Speaker 4: mostly Eli and Peyton. that they were almost like emeritus,
- 34:33Speaker 4: and he went to Brady out of default.
- 34:34Speaker 3: And Eli's like Usain Bolt compared to Peyton. Peyton did
- 34:37Speaker 3: not move at all.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Okay, is there a slower quarterback all-time or less athletic?
- 34:41Speaker 4: I would go back to the Chargers of the 80s
- 34:43Speaker 4: with Dan Fouts. Dan Fouts had a beard. He looked
- 34:46Speaker 4: like a professor back there carving up defense.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but I don't think he's quite as unathletic.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Peyton, after the neck injury when he got to Denver
- 34:54Speaker 3: the last couple years, that was probably the all-time.
- 34:57Speaker 4: When Peyton ran, it looked like a dog on his
- 34:59Speaker 4: hind legs running on the street. What is going on there?
- 35:01Speaker 4: What's going on?
- 35:01Speaker 3: But if you go back to the 80s and 90s,
- 35:03Speaker 3: nobody ran. Nowadays, you come in the NFL as a
- 35:05Speaker 3: quarterback and you can scramble. Back then, there were a
- 35:08Speaker 3: lot of guys like that.
- 35:08Speaker 6: All right.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Speaking of quarterbacks, Ben Johnson, the coach of the Bears,
- 35:11Speaker 4: was a little coy all week with who his quarterback
- 35:13Speaker 4: would be this weekend. Well, he messed around a little
- 35:17Speaker 4: bit and started Case Keenum technically under center for the
- 35:20Speaker 4: first play and had Tyson Bajent, the actual starter, out
- 35:23Speaker 4: at wide receiver. Here's his explanations.
- 35:25Speaker 8: Well, I got all these memos saying that Tyson was
- 35:28Speaker 8: starting before I ever made an announcement, so I didn't
- 35:31Speaker 8: want to get Case out there the first time. It
- 35:33Speaker 8: was like his ceremonial first pitch out there, handing off
- 35:36Speaker 8: the torch.
- 35:37Speaker 7: He gets credited with the win for that, right?
- 35:40Speaker 6: Good for him. I think the team gets credited for
- 35:42Speaker 6: a win.
- 35:43Speaker 4: Very cute. Ben Johnson likes to poke the bear.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 35:46Speaker 4: No pun intended. Case Keenum actually gets credit for the start,
- 35:50Speaker 4: so he gets the win on his docket. I will say, though,
- 35:52Speaker 4: if you watch right there, there's Tyson Bajent split out.
- 35:55Speaker 4: I didn't love it in the moment, being cute like this.
- 35:58Speaker 4: Let's give Tyson Bajent the pure start and let him go.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Show faith in him. And I think also that what's
- 36:04Speaker 4: being glazed over is Tyson Bajent, through four interceptions that game,
- 36:07Speaker 4: three of them were called back due to defensive penalties.
- 36:10Speaker 4: It's hard to throw four interceptions in a game, especially
- 36:12Speaker 4: when you're running the ball most of the time.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Well, if you look at the opponent, you could have
- 36:15Speaker 3: started Paul Paps at quarterback for the Chicago Bears and
- 36:18Speaker 3: won that. Oh, yes, you could have. There is no
- 36:20Speaker 3: way the Jets were competing in that game. Now, I
- 36:22Speaker 3: don't think Ben Johnson knew that. I think he does
- 36:25Speaker 3: get mad when the media assumes things. But that was
- 36:28Speaker 3: obviously a domination on the ground. Mighty Menungai just dominating
- 36:32Speaker 3: the Jets. I mean, it's interesting about the Bears get
- 36:35Speaker 3: all this credit for being a high-flying offense.
- 36:37Speaker 2: They are a grind-you-down offense.
- 36:39Speaker 4: But I will say, though, that's one of those games,
- 36:40Speaker 4: if you nationally didn't watch that game and saw some
- 36:43Speaker 4: of those passes Bajent made, I would be concerned that
- 36:45Speaker 4: your second-string quarterback isn't as good as your third-string quarterback
- 36:49Speaker 4: while you wait for your first-string quarterback. Update, Ben Johnson
- 36:52Speaker 4: was just at the podium. He said they plan— is
- 36:54Speaker 4: to start Bajent for week five against the Packers. But
- 36:58Speaker 4: that means Caleb Williams is still somewhat in flux.
- 37:01Speaker 3: That's interesting because I thought Caleb Williams might be back
- 37:04Speaker 3: from now with a hamstring injury.
- 37:05Speaker 2: But the Packers as an opponent, I don't think you
- 37:08Speaker 2: need a starting quarterback to beat the Packers. None at all.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying Paul Paps could start.
- 37:13Speaker 3: But I think Bajent can easily win that game. I
- 37:15Speaker 3: think Case Keenum could easily win that game. The Bears
- 37:18Speaker 3: are in a great spot because I know Minnesota's.
- 37:20Speaker 2: 4-0, Paul.
- 37:21Speaker 4: And you hate their 4-0.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Oh, it's one of the weakest 4-0s. And even, I
- 37:25Speaker 3: don't know how they beat the Dolphins, who are not
- 37:27Speaker 3: even trying to win. Okay, for our next clip, let's
- 37:30Speaker 3: go to the Bengals. Now, the Bengals threw the ball
- 37:32Speaker 3: 54 times yesterday in a loss to Jacksonville. They only
- 37:36Speaker 3: ran it 15 times. And Joe Burrow had this exchange
- 37:38Speaker 3: with a reporter after the game.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Do you feel like there needs to be a little
- 37:44Speaker 2: bit more balance there?
- 37:45Speaker 6: Obviously, you guys are always going to be a pass-first offense,
- 37:48Speaker 6: but do you feel like it's balanced enough? My response
- 37:52Speaker 6: to that would be let's throw more.
- 37:55Speaker 4: That's not a good sign. You talk about a team
- 37:57Speaker 4: that needs a running back, like an alpha dog running back.
- 38:00Speaker 4: They had Joe Mixon for a few years, and he
- 38:02Speaker 4: wasn't a superstar, but he was a good— all down
- 38:05Speaker 4: running back. They're not in that position right now.
- 38:07Speaker 2: No, I mean, Joe Burrow is one of the best
- 38:09Speaker 2: quarterbacks in the league. There's no doubt about it.
- 38:11Speaker 3: But eventually Jacksonville was able to see, oh, they're only
- 38:13Speaker 3: throwing the ball and they brought the rush on.
- 38:15Speaker 4: I'm no math guy, but 1.5 yards a carry doesn't
- 38:18Speaker 4: seem like you get it done.
- 38:19Speaker 3: No, I like Chase Brown, but Chase Brown has become
- 38:21Speaker 3: more of a third-down receiving right. He's like a Roger Craig,
- 38:25Speaker 3: so you need a run attack, especially when Cincinnati's defense
- 38:28Speaker 3: is good but not dominant. This was a huge win
- 38:31Speaker 3: for Jacksonville and really raised concerns. If you pick the
- 38:33Speaker 3: Bengals to go to the Super Bowl, you look at
- 38:35Speaker 3: that game and say, something's missing.
- 38:36Speaker 4: What frustrates me about the Bengals is they were a
- 38:39Speaker 4: play away from winning the Super Bowl. They were an
- 38:40Speaker 4: Aaron Donald tackle on Joe Burrow. They'd probably win that
- 38:43Speaker 4: Super Bowl. They feel every year that they're just a
- 38:45Speaker 4: tick further away. And two weeks ago, we were talking,
- 38:48Speaker 4: you were talking about their defense. Their defense is fine.
- 38:51Speaker 4: And now the offense is the issue.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting. What do you think of Joe Burrow's answer?
- 38:56Speaker 2: Throw the ball more.
- 38:57Speaker 4: I would do whatever Joe says.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Joe is a bit defiant. It's funny.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Ben Johnson was going at the reporters a little bit there.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Joe Burrow, I think, did not like the tone of
- 39:06Speaker 3: the questions.
- 39:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 39:07Speaker 3: For our next clip, Sean Payton has some issues in Denver.
- 39:10Speaker 3: He gave up play calling this summer to Davis Webb.
- 39:14Speaker 3: I'm not sure it's all working out great. Let's hear
- 39:16Speaker 3: from the coach.
- 39:18Speaker 9: Yeah, like I said, that's too early to... It's a
- 39:21Speaker 9: fair question. I appreciate it. And man, it's tough you
- 39:26Speaker 9: know to discuss any of that right now but i
- 39:29Speaker 9: told those guys like hey you know we played some
- 39:33Speaker 9: some tough teams and this is another good football team
- 39:36Speaker 9: um you know there were a lot of things we
- 39:40Speaker 9: did well defensively for a good portion of the game
- 39:43Speaker 9: i felt like the time of possession um began to
- 39:47Speaker 9: affect us and uh We have the big turnover, obviously,
- 39:52Speaker 9: in the kicking game, and that flips the field, and
- 39:54Speaker 9: all of a sudden you're back out there.
- 39:57Speaker 4: It seems like they'll talk about play calling every week
- 39:59Speaker 4: out there in Denver. It only works in the fourth quarter.
- 40:01Speaker 4: If I'm Sean Payton, I give up things like gluten.
- 40:03Speaker 4: I'm scrolling on my phone. I don't give up play calling.
- 40:06Speaker 4: You're one of the best play callers of all time.
- 40:08Speaker 4: I know you have Davis Webb there. Make him earn it.
- 40:11Speaker 4: Make him earn it and take control back of it.
- 40:12Speaker 4: I think he's trying to be not awkward to his
- 40:15Speaker 4: new play caller. You can't do that. You were this
- 40:17Speaker 4: close to the Super Bowl last year. Everything's in place.
- 40:20Speaker 4: I know you got a couple injuries yesterday, but take over.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Well, the issue is Davis Webb might have left if
- 40:25Speaker 3: you didn't promote him because there was nowhere to go.
- 40:27Speaker 2: But I agree.
- 40:28Speaker 3: The one caveat, and I'm going to say this for
- 40:30Speaker 3: Sean Mannion, our buddy, who's the new offensive coordinator in Philadelphia.
- 40:33Speaker 2: This is four games in.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Do you think it's possible that the whole offense gets
- 40:37Speaker 3: more used to Davis Webb? By week 10, we see
- 40:40Speaker 3: a completely different offense?
- 40:41Speaker 4: Yeah, you think. You always get that ramp-up thing. But
- 40:44Speaker 4: you've got to be in a position where you want
- 40:45Speaker 4: to be on the road for the entire playoffs. I
- 40:47Speaker 4: always look at these early September, early October games. You
- 40:50Speaker 4: can afford losses there. If you're the Chiefs, you could
- 40:53Speaker 4: afford a loss right now. The Broncos aren't one of
- 40:55Speaker 4: those teams.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Wow, the Broncos were home in the AFC title game
- 40:57Speaker 3: last year, and it snowed in the second half and
- 40:59Speaker 3: ruined their chances, but that was with a backup quarterback.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree.
- 41:03Speaker 3: Sean Payton, take this back, because the Broncos are my
- 41:05Speaker 3: Super Bowl pick, and only Sean Payton calling plays is
- 41:07Speaker 3: going to do that.
- 41:08Speaker 4: I hope you heard that, Coach. All right, coming up next,
- 41:10Speaker 4: we have Constructed Criticism, and get you ready for Monday
- 41:13Speaker 4: Night Football, Falcons-Saints. That's going to be a banger.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Banger. Back on Not So Fast. Oh, boy, Paul. I'm
- 41:22Speaker 2: Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps. That is Trey McBride.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Getting into it with an official, and according to many
- 41:28Speaker 3: angles on this video, the official curses out Trey McBride.
- 41:32Speaker 3: This feels like we're at the beginning of this story.
- 41:34Speaker 3: This is going to be problems for the officiating crew.
- 41:37Speaker 2: It's going to be problems not for Trey McBride, but
- 41:39Speaker 2: I think Trey McBride was rightfully upset after this. The
- 41:41Speaker 2: officials cannot do that under any circumstance.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a perfect bad storm for the NFL. The
- 41:46Speaker 4: camera had to be in the right spot. Trey McBride
- 41:49Speaker 4: has such field awareness, maybe camera awareness, that he said,
- 41:51Speaker 4: You just got that on tape. He F-bombed him twice,
- 41:54Speaker 4: and the NFL is going to have to answer for
- 41:56Speaker 4: this one because the players' union stepped on the gas.
- 41:58Speaker 4: Now that the players' union says something, they're going to answer.
- 42:00Speaker 4: There was another thing where a guy from the Vikings
- 42:03Speaker 4: ran into a ref, and the ref jumped up like
- 42:04Speaker 4: it was go time. Here's the problem with refs. They
- 42:07Speaker 4: know the players can't do anything. If you know you
- 42:09Speaker 4: can't be punched in the face by someone, you'll F-bomb them.
- 42:12Speaker 4: You'll go like this to them, and it's almost like
- 42:14Speaker 4: a 14-year-old at a Starbucks. You can't do anything when
- 42:16Speaker 4: they yell at you. So the refs, they're untouchable.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Here's J.C.
- 42:19Speaker 3: Tretter's full quote, by the way, the union chief on
- 42:22Speaker 3: the Trey McBride incident. This kind of behavior from an
- 42:25Speaker 3: official towards a player, unacceptable. Players are constantly being held
- 42:29Speaker 3: accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL
- 42:31Speaker 3: to hold officials to the same standard. I mean, that's
- 42:34Speaker 3: a fair statement.
- 42:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:35Speaker 4: And it's going to be one of those things until
- 42:37Speaker 4: we get more clarity or more. Everyone's going to want
- 42:40Speaker 4: the ref's sideline for a week. Most people don't know
- 42:41Speaker 4: the ref's names. At this point, they don't give out names,
- 42:44Speaker 4: and they don't make them available.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Don't even talk to me. The Scott Novak crew and all.
- 42:48Speaker 3: I'm sick of it. I want money back from the
- 42:50Speaker 3: NFL on all my prescription. Whenever there's a touchdown that's
- 42:52Speaker 3: called back by holding, a little part of me dies inside, Paul.
- 42:55Speaker 4: No one hates holding more than this guy, Pearl. All right,
- 42:57Speaker 4: let's get to Monday Night Football. It's an anniversary game.
- 43:00Speaker 4: But you have Falcons at Saints tonight, and this is
- 43:02Speaker 4: a game for your pure football fans. You know, Tyler
- 43:04Speaker 4: Shuck and Michael Penix, you're not putting on the jumbotron saying, hey,
- 43:07Speaker 4: tune into this one. These are two teams that are
- 43:09Speaker 4: kind of interesting, maybe not threatening. Shuck has been really
- 43:13Speaker 4: good for the Saints, and Michael Penix had a good
- 43:15Speaker 4: weekend last week against the Green Bay Packers. Everything's in
- 43:18Speaker 4: place for the Falcons to go on a mini run
- 43:20Speaker 4: here and tonight's the night.
- 43:22Speaker 3: It's funny because the NFL was criticized for having three
- 43:24Speaker 3: straight weeks of Atlanta in primetime, but it ends up working.
- 43:27Speaker 3: I think football fans are really curious about Tyler Shuck
- 43:30Speaker 3: as well. You can go from either angle, but the
- 43:32Speaker 3: emotion is going to be.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Interesting to me.
- 43:33Speaker 3: 20 years since the first game back at the Superdome
- 43:36Speaker 3: after Katrina.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Do you know who's playing this weekend, Paul?
- 43:39Speaker 3: Tonight, Trombone Shorty, Eric Church, and the Neville brothers all
- 43:43Speaker 3: going to be in the stadium. I just think all
- 43:46Speaker 3: the players coming back, the swell of emotion, I'm not
- 43:49Speaker 3: necessarily going to bet this game, but I think that's
- 43:51Speaker 3: an advantage for New Orleans.
- 43:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that game 20 years ago, September 25, 2006, some
- 43:56Speaker 4: of the players on the field, Michael Vick, Drew Brees,
- 43:59Speaker 4: Reggie Bush, Warwick Dunn, Steve Gleason with the punt block,
- 44:03Speaker 4: the statues out there. That's one of those games. I'd
- 44:05Speaker 4: like to almost go watch in real time, like run
- 44:07Speaker 4: that game back, play that at 5 o'clock before this game.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Steve Gleason will, I assume, be in
- 44:12Speaker 3: the building, of course. I actually met Steve Gleason at
- 44:16Speaker 3: his home, which is right near the Super Bowl. Ryan
- 44:18Speaker 3: Leaf took me during Super Bowl week one time, and
- 44:20Speaker 3: it's incredibly powerful. He's an incredibly inspiring person, and it's
- 44:24Speaker 3: so interesting. For young fans who weren't there, New Orleans
- 44:27Speaker 3: coming back from Katrina meant so much.
- 44:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 44:30Speaker 2: The Saints in particular.
- 44:31Speaker 4: One more feel-good leftover. I got a leftover here for you.
- 44:34Speaker 4: The Minnesota Gophers took down Michigan at Michigan. Watch this
- 44:37Speaker 4: field rushing. They were singing Mr. Brightside. Look at the Jumbotron.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Watch this. Please remain off the field. They're not listening
- 44:44Speaker 4: to that one. Minnesota doesn't go to the big house
- 44:46Speaker 4: too often to take down Michigan. Everybody was on the field.
- 44:49Speaker 4: People were coming from the interstate running on the field.
- 44:51Speaker 2: It was go time. That looked like so fun.
- 44:54Speaker 4: And P.J. Fleck, after the words, was crowd surfing his players.
- 44:57Speaker 4: A good time for Minnesota.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Really good win.
- 44:59Speaker 4: All right, let's get to it's constructive criticism time, Pearl.
- 45:02Speaker 4: That's your feedback, your tweets, your social media notes to us.
- 45:05Speaker 4: This first one is from a guy we know, Pearl.
- 45:08Speaker 6: Here we go.
- 45:10Speaker 4: From Andrew Perloff, responding to a fan. Is the SEC
- 45:13Speaker 4: good or bad? Ooh, wow, bad. How'd that go for
- 45:18Speaker 4: you on social media when you tweeted that out?
- 45:19Speaker 2: Good. Well, look at this guy. He said, it is
- 45:21Speaker 2: very good, not top-heavy, and much better than every other conference.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Most people disagree.
- 45:25Speaker 3: The SEC is, if you're saying, are they the most
- 45:27Speaker 3: overrated conference, there's not even a question.
- 45:29Speaker 4: Overcovered or overrated?
- 45:31Speaker 2: Overrated.
- 45:32Speaker 3: The AP ranking puts all these SEC teams in. And
- 45:36Speaker 3: what happened last year in the playoff? What happened to
- 45:38Speaker 3: Alabama and Oklahoma?
- 45:40Speaker 4: It does feel like they don't have a heavyweight contender
- 45:43Speaker 4: this year.
- 45:43Speaker 2: No, it's the names. NIL spread all the talent away
- 45:46Speaker 2: from the SEC.
- 45:47Speaker 3: It used to be Georgia would have five All-Americans on
- 45:50Speaker 3: their depth charts. Now there are all sorts of schools. No,
- 45:53Speaker 3: I think they're definitely overrated. I think it's history.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Why, for example, was Missouri ranked 25 coming into this week? Yeah,
- 46:00Speaker 2: I know they blew out Florida, but do we know
- 46:02Speaker 2: that they're better than other divisions?
- 46:03Speaker 4: They still win the tailgate. One more constructive criticism. Maybe
- 46:06Speaker 4: we wanted to get this story. Dante Reno, this one's
- 46:08Speaker 4: for you, Pops. I think you know the back story.
- 46:11Speaker 4: Dante Reno's father, Tony Reno, was a very good head
- 46:14Speaker 4: coach at Yale football. I've seen him play multiple times
- 46:17Speaker 4: right down the street. His son, Dante Reno, great quarterback,
- 46:20Speaker 4: went to South Carolina, came back to play for his father.
- 46:23Speaker 4: His father passes away on Friday. Dante Reno goes out
- 46:26Speaker 4: there and carves up Merrimack for four touchdowns with a
- 46:28Speaker 4: comeback win, played the day after his father passed away.
- 46:32Speaker 4: What a great kid. His father ran a really good program,
- 46:35Speaker 4: and one of those stories that You want to give
- 46:37Speaker 4: a shout-out to.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Remember when Brett Favre played in a situation way back
- 46:41Speaker 3: in the day on Monday Night Football?
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yep. That's tough, but that's what football players do.
- 46:45Speaker 8: Yep.
- 46:45Speaker 4: Four touchdowns for Dante Reno, and Tony Reno was his father.
- 46:48Speaker 4: All right, it's time for the feel-good. We were all
- 46:50Speaker 4: agreed on this one. The control room loves dogs. We
- 46:52Speaker 4: love dogs.
- 46:53Speaker 6: Here we go, Pearl.
- 46:54Speaker 4: They have a race at halftime of the Seahawks game.
- 46:57Speaker 4: The Corgi race. Corgi? Corgi, I think. Look at the
- 47:00Speaker 4: look back by that dog.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 47:03Speaker 4: That was Usain Bolt-ish. Remember when Bolt had the big lead?
- 47:07Speaker 2: Yep.
- 47:07Speaker 4: And did the look back at all the other, like,
- 47:09Speaker 4: slow dudes?
- 47:10Speaker 3: But are you worried about a potential taunting penalty? They
- 47:14Speaker 3: might have awarded it to one of the other Corgis.
- 47:15Speaker 2: I looked.
- 47:16Speaker 4: There was no laundry on the field. The Corgi just
- 47:18Speaker 4: gave the stare back at the 50-meter mark. Like, keep up, fellas.
- 47:21Speaker 2: What if he had put one paw behind his head,
- 47:23Speaker 2: like Dion?
- 47:23Speaker 4: Oh, and fam you?
- 47:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be pretty cool.
- 47:26Speaker 4: That was pretty cool. Now, will there be future?
- 47:28Speaker 2: Does this.
- 47:29Speaker 4: corgi come back next week to defend his title.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Oh like that guy in the marlins who runs around
- 47:34Speaker 2: the stadium.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Yes but i don't think so that is one of
- 47:36Speaker 4: the great photos of all time there's a photo of
- 47:38Speaker 4: a usain bolt in a race only 100 meters it's
- 47:41Speaker 4: not a marathon and he's looking back at the rest
- 47:43Speaker 4: of the crew with this big smile.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Yeah it looks like ai and i think he still
- 47:46Speaker 3: set the all-time record in that race i mean by
- 47:49Speaker 3: the way it's the second usain bolt mention.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Of the show that's fantastic okay before we go Monday
- 47:54Speaker 4: Night Football, Falcons, Saints, what do you got tonight? How
- 47:56Speaker 4: does that play out?
- 47:56Speaker 2: I mean, I'm just going pure emotion. I'm going with
- 47:59Speaker 2: the Saints.
- 48:00Speaker 4: What about Michael Penix, second start? I know you want
- 48:03Speaker 4: the feel good.
- 48:04Speaker 3: At home, I would like Michael Penix tonight, but no.
- 48:06Speaker 3: In New Orleans, Tyler Shuck has played well. That team
- 48:08Speaker 3: is actually pretty good for NFC South. I think it's
- 48:12Speaker 3: Carolina and New Orleans are the two teams to watch there.
- 48:14Speaker 4: It's going to be good to see how that division
- 48:16Speaker 4: plays out because no one knows who it's going to be.
- 48:19Speaker 4: I think everyone would pick the Buccaneers generally.
- 48:21Speaker 2: But not now. Not now.
- 48:23Speaker 4: But at the start of the season, the Buccaneers were
- 48:24Speaker 4: the safe pick, and now it's up for grabs.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Yeah, whoever wins tonight, it's going to be paired with
- 48:28Speaker 3: Carolina because Carolina did something very important.
- 48:30Speaker 2: They won in a standalone game on national TV. Now
- 48:33Speaker 2: everyone's into them, including me.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Including you. All right, coming up tomorrow, join Dan Patrick,
- 48:38Speaker 4: 9 to noon Eastern, right here on NBC Sports Now.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Then come hang with us. Not so fast. Paps and Perloff.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Enjoy the football tonight. Come hang with us after.
- 48:45Speaker 6: Take it easy.
