- 5:29Jennifer Davis: Is your tree ready for the next windstorm?
- 5:33Jennifer Davis: A stressed tree is more likely to come down in a fall windstorm, and the City of Redmond wants you to look at yours before the next one hits.
- 5:41Jennifer Davis: Signs worth a closer look include a leaning trunk, dead branches, or fungus growing at the base.
- 5:48Jennifer Davis: If something seems off, a certified arborist can tell you how risky that is.
- 5:54Jennifer Davis: The city assessed nearly 18,000 of its own trees in 2023 and 2024, with follow-up work scheduled to continue through November.
- 6:03Jennifer Davis: While you're at it, sign up for Alert Redmond, the city's very own emergency notification system, for Redmond-specific alerts on hazardous weather, local emergencies, and public safety.
- 6:16Jennifer Davis: The link's in the show notes and in our newsletter.
- 6:19Dan Schulz: If you've got a hidden leak, the worst plan is grabbing a shovel and hoping.
- 6:24Dan Schulz: Here's Lincoln Spencer from Simply Leak Detection.
- 6:27Lincoln Spencer: You know, I mean, it just depends on where you wanna spend your time.
- 6:31Lincoln Spencer: Some people have more time than money, and they're happy to dig up their yard.
- 6:34Lincoln Spencer: But I would say for most people, it's well worth the money to pay us to know exactly where to dig, saving a lot of time in digging and repair effort, but also just saving their landscape so they don't
- 6:47Lincoln Spencer: have to put everything back together again.
- 6:50Jennifer Davis: They mark the spot so you dig once instead of five times.
- 6:54Jennifer Davis: Call 253-800-1412 or go to simplyleakdetection.com and tell them The Best of Redmond sent ya.
- 7:03Dan Schulz: It's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share a piece of history, a tidbit, or some trivia about life in and around Redmond.
- 7:13Dan Schulz: Today's trivia question is: Warren Perrigo, one of Redmond's two founding settlers, came to the area after serving in which conflict?
- 7:24Dan Schulz: And your choices are, The War of 1812, B, The Mexican-American War, C, The Civil War, D, The Spanish-American War.
- 7:36Dan Schulz: And your timer starts now
- 7:39Jennifer Davis: Oh, geez.
- 7:40Jennifer Davis: Okay, a founding settler.
- 7:42Jennifer Davis: I'm gonna guess, like, if Redmond had people coming to settle in, like, the 1850s or '60s, that's quite a bit after the War of 1812.
- 7:53Jennifer Davis: He'd have to be an old guy by then.
- 7:55Jennifer Davis: I'm gonna go ahead and guess the Civil War.
- 7:57Jennifer Davis: I'm gonna go C.
- 7:58Jennifer Davis: I'm gonna guess he came out here after he was, serving in the Civil War.
- 8:03Jennifer Davis: C, final
- 8:04Dan Schulz: cannot believe it.
- 8:05Dan Schulz: You have three in a row.
- 8:07Dan Schulz: This is a new Best of Redmond record
- 8:10Jennifer Davis: Yeah, I don't think I've ever done this well before
- 8:13Dan Schulz: The answer is, in fact, C, the Civil War.
- 8:17Dan Schulz: Warren Wentworth Perrigo was a decorated Civil War veteran from Maine.
- 8:22Dan Schulz: After the war, he and his wife, Laura, headed west, arriving in Seattle in 1866 and settling near Lake Sammamish in 1871.
- 8:32Dan Schulz: He bought 80 acres, built the Melrose House Inn, and blazed many of the first trails and roads connecting the early Eastside settlements, which made him essentially the region's first trail builder.
- 8:46Dan Schulz: Laura died after 16 years in Redmond, and Warren eventually sold the hotel and moved to Seattle.
- 8:52Dan Schulz: A soldier turned innkeeper turned road builder.
- 8:55Dan Schulz: That is really good.
- 8:56Dan Schulz: Good job, Jennifer
- 9:10Jennifer Davis: We've heard a book vending machine operation is being planned for a high foot traffic spot near the Redmond Saturday market.
- 9:18Jennifer Davis: Think curated paperbacks from five to $12, rotating titles, and nobody behind a counter.
- 9:25Jennifer Davis: It sounds gimmicky until you hear the numbers from a pilot in Tacoma.
- 9:29Jennifer Davis: None of this is confirmed, not the exact spot, the timing, or who's running it.
- 9:34Jennifer Davis: So here's our question: What's the one paperback you'd want to find in a Redmond vending machine?
- 9:41Jennifer Davis: If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/bestofredmond and drop it in the Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses post.
- 9:51Jennifer Davis: If you've enjoyed this podcast, you're gonna love our companion newsletter.
- 9:55Jennifer Davis: Find it at bestofredmond.com and we'll see you in the next one
- 10:00Dan Schulz: Or maybe before then, walking around Redmond
