- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Today we're heading back to the pharmacy, but focusing on something new. Lucas: Right. In previous episodes we covered headaches and pain relief. Today we're talking about coughing and cough syrup. Luna: Ooh, that's timely. I've actually been fighting a little cough lately. Lucas: Well, perfect. Let's start with saying you have a cough. In Dutch, 'Ik heb hoestbuien.' Say it with me: Ik heb hoestbuien. Luna: Ik heb hoestbuien. That's a new one. So 'hoestbuien' is like coughing fits? Lucas: Exactly. 'Hoest' means cough, and 'bui' means a bout or spell. So 'hoestbuien' are coughing bouts. Good ear. Luna: Okay, so if I'm at the pharmacy, I could say 'Ik heb hoestbuien.' Then I'd ask for something, right? Lucas: Yeah. You can ask 'Hebt u iets tegen hoesten?' That means 'Do you have something for coughing?' Let's hear it. Luna: Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? That sounds familiar from the headache episode, but with 'hoesten' instead. Lucas: Exactly. 'Tegen' means 'against' or 'for'. So 'iets tegen hoesten' is 'something for coughing'. Good connection. Luna: And if I specifically want cough syrup? I'd say 'Ik zoek hoestsiroop.' Lucas: Perfect. 'Ik zoek hoestsiroop.' 'Zoek' means 'seek' or 'look for'. 'Hoestsiroop' is cough syrup. Say it. Luna: Ik zoek hoestsiroop. That's easy because 'siroop' sounds like syrup. Lucas: Right. Then you'll want to ask the price: 'Hoeveel kost dit?' And if you agree, 'Ik neem het.' Let's practice the whole conversation. Luna: Okay. So I walk in and say 'Ik heb hoestbuien. Hebt u iets tegen hoesten?' Lucas: Then the pharmacist might say yes and show you something. Then you say 'Ik zoek hoestsiroop.' Luna: And they'll show you a bottle. I ask 'Hoeveel kost dit?' They tell me, and I say 'Ik neem het.' Lucas: Exactly. Let's go through each phrase once more. Repeat after me: Ik heb hoestbuien. Luna: Ik heb hoestbuien. Lucas: Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? Luna: Hebt u iets tegen hoesten? Lucas: Ik zoek hoestsiroop. Luna: Ik zoek hoestsiroop. Lucas: Hoeveel kost dit? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit? Lucas: Ik neem het. Luna: Ik neem het.
