- 0:01The field of psychology in the West has developed over the last
- 0:04couple of centuries with a focus on the influence of the
- 0:08subconscious levels on our external lives, fixating on
- 0:13trauma, past events and their effect on the way we respond to
- 0:17circumstances in our lives. This has led to techniques such
- 0:22as psychotherapy, dream interpretation, regression
- 0:26therapy, and hypnosis as mechanisms to unlock the
- 0:30subconscious realm to gain an understanding of what what lies
- 0:34hidden there. Western psychology has notably
- 0:39failed to expend much effort on understanding levels that are
- 0:42super conscient or circumconscient.
- 0:47Sri Aurobindo has included these planes or levels in his more
- 0:50comprehensive review of human psychology.
- 0:54Without an understanding of these additional segments of our
- 0:57existence, it is virtually impossible to truly resolve the
- 1:01issues that arise through a deep examination of the subconscious
- 1:05errors. And thus such such examinations
- 1:10as Western psychology have undertaken have revealed a
- 1:13number of dangers for the individuals involved who get
- 1:17labeled as having certain conditions and who create a
- 1:21surface personality around the existence of those conditions
- 1:26and act to actually strengthen and embed them further rather
- 1:31than find ways to resolve them and move forward freely without
- 1:35them. Thus, few people ever succeed in
- 1:39going beyond the need for therapy in the currently
- 1:43understood methods and techniques of psychological
- 1:45practice without the active intervention of the forces
- 1:50active at the Super conscient levels.
- 1:52Such a review of the sub conscient acts primarily as a
- 1:56stirring up an awakening of those forces that lie hidden
- 2:01there, Fiorobindo writes, Quote. The subconscient is a concealed
- 2:07and unexpressed inarticulate consciousness which works below
- 2:12all our conscious physical activities.
- 2:15Just as what we call the superconscient is really a
- 2:18higher consciousness above from which things descend into the
- 2:22being, so the subconscient is below the body consciousness,
- 2:27and things come up into the physical, the vital, and the
- 2:31mind nature. From there, just as the higher
- 2:35consciousness is super conscient to us and supports all our
- 2:40spiritual possibilities and nature, so the subconscient is
- 2:44the basis of our material being and supports all that comes up
- 2:50in the physical nature. Men are not ordinarily conscious
- 2:54of either of these planes of their own being, but by sodna
- 2:59they can become aware. The subconscient retains the
- 3:03impressions of all our past experiences of life, and they
- 3:07can come up from there in dream forms.
- 3:10Most dreams and ordinary sleep are formations made from
- 3:15subconscient impressions. The habit of strong recurrence
- 3:20of the same things in our physical consciousness, so that
- 3:24it is difficult to get rid of its habits, is largely due to a
- 3:28subconscious support. The subconscient is full of
- 3:33irrational habits. When things are rejected from
- 3:37all other parts of the nature, they go either into the
- 3:40environmental consciousness around us, through which we
- 3:44communicate with others and with universal nature and try to
- 3:48return from there, or they sink into the subconscient and can
- 3:54come up from there even after lying long quiescent, so that we
- 3:58think they are gone. When something is erased from
- 4:02the subconscient so completely that it leaves no seed, and
- 4:07thrown out of the circumconscient so completely
- 4:10that it can return no more than, only can we be sure that we have
- 4:16finished with it forever. End Quote Reference Shriorobindo
