- 0:00What you do if you've got the family in the car, don't click
- 0:02on the happy endings button. Where is the applause button
- 0:08this week on that car show, Ryan not only feels an invisible
- 0:13touch when driving a Genesis, but he finds out that Jesus does
- 0:18love him. Lindsay talks about.
- 0:21That's. Another song from Genesis, isn't
- 0:24it? Come on, come on, come on.
- 0:28How much do I have to work with? Lindsay sees random Japanese
- 0:32cars on the freeway in Seattle, including the Toyota.
- 0:36Will I talk a little bit about getting license plates in
- 0:42California? I am finally legal.
- 0:45We talk a little bit about the prices of supers and how they
- 0:48seem to have gone out of perspective or gone out of
- 0:51control. We give you a few life hacks
- 0:54when it comes to Car Week. You know what you can do on a
- 0:57relative budget. That and a whole lot more TuneIn
- 1:01or relax, enjoy. It's that car show.
- 1:04So I had this gym teacher at Dulzer Middle School in
- 1:07Indianapolis, IN His name was Mr. Bell, I do believe.
- 1:10I remember him very, very well. He used to wear those coach
- 1:14shorts, I think made by a company called Bike.
- 1:16And they were these nylon things that were way too short.
- 1:19Used to wear the the stripes tube socks, you know, and he
- 1:23sounded like a frog and he had the shiny bald head, you know,
- 1:28little guy, powerful little man. But I never heard the phrase
- 1:33circular file before for a trash can.
- 1:37And I remember coming in late one day with like a pass, I
- 1:40don't know, doctor's appointment or something.
- 1:43And, and he said throw it in the circular font.
- 1:46And I and I just, I thought that was like the funniest.
- 1:49Try that again, Throw that into the circular file.
- 1:53And I just, I thought like, I just thought that was like the
- 1:56funniest thing I'd ever heard. Well, and do you only like I'm
- 2:00sure you only hear it in that voice now for the rest of your
- 2:02life. That's it.
- 2:03So whenever I I hear that that oh so clever phrase, I think of
- 2:07Mr. Mr. Bell. Right back to mid pool PE.
- 2:11He was an old school, like we climbed ropes in that glass.
- 2:15No medicine balls, but. That's crazy.
- 2:18You guys ever go to a gym, like an old gym and they have those
- 2:21like those bars on the wall like those dowels.
- 2:24You ever seen that like? Primary school did.
- 2:27Yeah, what the hell are those, Dean?
- 2:30The ones that we had at primary school came out of the wall,
- 2:32like kind of were fixed to the yeah.
- 2:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like like almost some drying
- 2:36racks or something. Yeah, and yeah, the climbing and
- 2:39then the ropes and all that crap.
- 2:41They were some highly underutilized.
- 2:44Yeah. Anyway, it's that car show.
- 2:48What's up? It is how are you guys it's.
- 2:51Good, it's raining here. What about there?
- 2:54I know it sounds like you're having a bit of a tornado,
- 2:57typhoon, hail, smorgasbord. I we live in this weird like
- 3:03strip where like nothing touches us, knock on wood.
- 3:05It always goes north or South, north or South.
- 3:07And so once again it seemed to bypass us.
- 3:10But I've got this giant car. Thank you Genesis USA.
- 3:17I've got AG 90. It's a car I hardly knew
- 3:20existed. I'm writing an article for
- 3:22Autoblog about Kenny family dot dot dot sedan question mark and
- 3:29and that you know, everyone goes and immediately, you know, shops
- 3:32at a crossover, an SUV or whatever.
- 3:34And I was kind of thinking, well, maybe I'll I'll get a a
- 3:37mid sized sedan, you know, a typical mid sized sedan.
- 3:39And then this thing shows up and had I done my research, I would
- 3:42have known guys, this thing, I'm not even sure it would fit in my
- 3:45garage. And I don't have a small garage.
- 3:47The the car is giant. You can put you park it in.
- 3:50It's massive. It is like, do you remember like
- 3:52a 750 Illinois of your right, like the extended wheelbase, you
- 3:57know. So this is, yeah, 2025.
- 4:00I don't know. You can probably see it behind
- 4:02me, behind the lawnmower there. G90.
- 4:05It's a hell of a thing. It's got a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder
- 4:09that is twin turbocharged and I think also has an electric
- 4:13supercharger. So it's 400 horsepower and
- 4:15change, but it's also a hell of a lot of car to move around.
- 4:18Is it quick? Like could you remake Ronin with
- 4:21it? See, now The thing is, it's
- 4:23probably faster than anything in that movie, right?
- 4:25It's zero to 60 and 5.9, but it just doesn't feel fast.
- 4:31I mean, driving the the pole start right where it's quick off
- 4:33the line, right? You know, it's just a different
- 4:35thing. You get used to that.
- 4:36This is not that it's a, you know, a bit of a hesitation, but
- 4:40it's it's plenty of plenty of power, you know, plenty of
- 4:42plenty powerful do. You feel like it's turbo lag?
- 4:45Do you feel like it's the? Way a little bit like I think
- 4:48it's probably got a 10 or 12 speed transmission and it's got
- 4:51auto Start Stop too. So you know which I finally
- 4:54figured out how to turn off. But guys, it has a chauffeur
- 4:58mode. And this is, this is not a
- 5:00driver's car. This is a passenger car.
- 5:02And I was trying to think how many passenger cars like this
- 5:05exist right outside of, like, the upper echelons of, you know,
- 5:09Rolls Royce, Bentley. My Bach.
- 5:11My Bach, Yeah, this is a budget, My Bach.
- 5:14And I think that is the best way.
- 5:16I've heard it referred to as a budget.
- 5:17Rolls Royce. No, this is a budget.
- 5:18My Bach It is it. Has that volume.
- 5:22It oh volume, yeah, it goes to 11, yeah.
- 5:27Yeah, physically, literally and figuratively.
- 5:30It's in a beautiful white matte finish, which I, I don't know
- 5:34how you keep that nice, but I'm sure there are ways.
- 5:37And I was out driving it today and I can tell you a little bit
- 5:39more about it 'cause there's so much to share.
- 5:42But I saw a car that I had. I did a triple tank.
- 5:47Do you know the movie Superfly? It's like this 70s
- 5:51blaxploitation. It's a, it's a pimp car
- 5:54basically. And I don't like the term, but
- 5:56the movie was about a pimp and he drove a car that I think was
- 5:59a, a Lincoln or a Cadillac of its era.
- 6:01And you'd know it if you saw one.
- 6:02Do you remember the Excalibur cars that people drove, right?
- 6:06The neo classics, right? This was kind of like that, but
- 6:10built on one of those 70s cars and and retains a little more of
- 6:14that sort of square bodied shape.
- 6:15But it has these headlights that I can't really describe.
- 6:18If I, if I get off my butt later when I edit this, I'll I'll put
- 6:21a picture in here, but it's got these giant headlights that sort
- 6:25of have these metal bars that come in almost like a Lantern in
- 6:28there like. An aircraft plane, like a really
- 6:30old aircraft plane light. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's there.
- 6:34It's it's like, like they should be gas, gas lanterns or
- 6:37something. And they're giant.
- 6:38And it looks like a like Benjamin Buttons, you know,
- 6:41spectacles, you know, shining back.
- 6:43Yeah. You know, it's just it's, it's
- 6:44an odd, odd thing. And I wanted to get the Gen. a
- 6:47picture of the Genesis next to this pit mobile, because it
- 6:50would have been perfect. It was black.
- 6:52It had all the Chrome. I don't know who was driving it.
- 6:54I don't know what possesses someone to obtain such a
- 6:57vehicle. And it was this beautiful day
- 7:00and I guess he was just out driving it like I was driving.
- 7:02There so many questions so. Many questions I want.
- 7:04To know everything. I wanted to I was so wanted to
- 7:07get the pic the cars next to each other.
- 7:09I would have had a great and. Get the story.
- 7:11Yeah, get. The story, you know, but not
- 7:14that this is a pimp car, but it is pimped out it's got
- 7:17everything. It's the the rear seats in the
- 7:19back lie flat, much like a Maibach, but not a 57.
- 7:23You know, in the old school Maibach parlance, like the the
- 7:2562, right? It's got that, you know, it's
- 7:27got a screen. The screen in the back overrides
- 7:30the stereo and air conditioning controls for the front.
- 7:32So that tells you who the car's for who's the boss, right?
- 7:34Who's the boss? And so far it's been my
- 7:37daughter, who I've been shuttling around just for fun,
- 7:39does. It mean like the seats do you
- 7:42get like a nice massage? Oh my God, in all four seats and
- 7:47it's a good massage. I went, I got my biannual Manny
- 7:50Petty earlier today, you know, and they put you in that like
- 7:52that terrible massage seat that every time I turn it off, the
- 7:55lady turned it back on. I stop.
- 7:58It's hurting me. This is not that.
- 8:00This is this feels good. And you can, you know, dial it
- 8:04in. It's all four seats.
- 8:06It's got power shades and all all the windows in the back.
- 8:10It's got dual sunroofs. It's got a banging holes and
- 8:12stereo. It's got in lieu of wood.
- 8:15It's got I think it's like pressed carbon fiber or molded
- 8:18carbon fiber like a Lamborghini, right.
- 8:21You know where it's almost this camouflage.
- 8:23It is, it's, it's, I don't know. It's not only my style, but it
- 8:28is a hell of a thing to drive around for a week and we are
- 8:31like. How much does that cost?
- 8:33So it starts at 99 five. So I, I was shocked because I
- 8:38think that's more than A7 series starts at.
- 8:40I don't know what an S class is at these days and I haven't
- 8:43driven either one of those in years.
- 8:46So I don't know that the value proposition is there.
- 8:48I think the previous generation started at 70 or 75.
- 8:51And that makes sense, right? It's got big beautiful wheels,
- 8:55but I don't think it has anything special in the
- 8:56suspension. Maybe I'm wrong.
- 8:59One thing it seems to do is it seems to lift its front end when
- 9:02you slow down for like a dip in the road or something or which
- 9:05is which is cool or that or just hasn't hasn't managed to scrape
- 9:08yet. Hell of a thing.
- 9:10It's got a brown leather interior.
- 9:13It is 70 smells good. You know, it's, it is something,
- 9:18it is what you'd want to take three friends like on a trip
- 9:20from like LA to New York in or something into that.
- 9:24Or it's like the modern swingers, like if you're going
- 9:26to remake swingers. Yeah, yeah, I want someone to
- 9:29drive me in the back, right, like I want, you know, with a
- 9:32couple buddies or whatever. I'm taking my daughter, my wife
- 9:35and my daughter's friend to a concert tomorrow night and I'm
- 9:38going to drop them off like I'm, you know, Yeah, you are a lift
- 9:41black car pumping AJR in front of the band.
- 9:45AJR. Nice.
- 9:46Yeah, That's that's what will be on the soundtrack.
- 9:49But anyway, thank you. Genesis USA Drive shop because
- 9:54it is a it's a fun car and it is growing on me.
- 9:57This happens a lot. You get a car not so sure about
- 10:00after day or two, you don't want to get the thing back.
- 10:03But I bet when I get back in my GT4, it's going to seem like the
- 10:06quickest, tiniest, you know, raciest little thing ever
- 10:08because this is very much on the other end of the spectrum.
- 10:12Have either one of you had any experience with Genesis or cars
- 10:15like this? I have sat in a Maibach like a
- 10:19new Yeah. And it was remarkable.
- 10:22And like you said, I mean, it's just very passenger oriented, as
- 10:25we all know. And I saw the genesis that you
- 10:29have. I saw three of them in the
- 10:32parking out in the field at Lamar, right, Right.
- 10:35And I saw them from far away. And I was like, what is that?
- 10:39Because it was enough. It was Maibach esque enough.
- 10:43But I'm like, I knew it wasn't a Maibach, but I'm like, what is
- 10:45it? It's giant.
- 10:47It's just voluminous. And definitely it drew me in.
- 10:51I'm like I have to go see what this.
- 10:52Is, yeah. Not the directly I needed to be
- 10:54going. Yeah, exactly.
- 10:55It's like the homing beacon. Yeah, I haven't driven them, but
- 11:00fascinating because it was enough like a Mybot that we're
- 11:03like, yeah, it's going on, but it's a Genesis.
- 11:05Yeah. We knew it was brand new.
- 11:07So yeah, it's really interesting to hear what it's like to
- 11:10actually experience. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:12And maybe this makes more sense as a car, right, If you, I
- 11:15imagine this was created for like Korean executives or
- 11:17something and they just decided, hey, we'll sell some in the
- 11:19States and see if it hits, right.
- 11:21I don't think I've ever seen one on the road, but yeah.
- 11:25But yeah, I mean, it's it's an interesting proposition for
- 11:27Genesis because they were spun out into their own brand, you
- 11:31know, just in the last couple years as the more luxury brand.
- 11:35So it makes sense that they would sort of like dip their toe
- 11:38in something like this. But yeah, I mean, we're all used
- 11:42to my Bach, and we sort of understand what that means to
- 11:46try and introduce something that's like relatively
- 11:49competitive, you know, obviously much more affordable.
- 11:53But it'll be interesting to see how this unfolds and whether it
- 11:56does find an audience in the States.
- 11:58Yes, yes, I think it probably shares an audience with what is
- 12:02it the Crown sedan, not the US one, but the one that they sell
- 12:05in Japan, right, with the Lacy curtains and and all that, you
- 12:08know. But this is a much more modern
- 12:12option. Yes, yes.
- 12:13That styling, you know, does look a little dated.
- 12:17Even the new one, yeah. Unique as it is, yeah.
- 12:20So this could be a different solution or different option for
- 12:24somebody who wants that but doesn't really care for that
- 12:26styling. It's that vibe every time you
- 12:28get in that car. It's Suntory time.
- 12:30I mean, it is, it is, is that vibe.
- 12:32It is swanky Asian businessmen businesswoman car, but it
- 12:38basically, you know, we've talked about this a lot, but
- 12:39what is luxury in 2025, right? Just throwing everything.
- 12:44It's like that SNL skit about the nightclubs, right?
- 12:47Like this club has little people on unicycles and like this car
- 12:51has everything that you that you think is luxury, right?
- 12:54Past and present future, right? Exactly.
- 12:58You know, I'm still discovering little things you can do.
- 13:00Like I can open the back doors from the front seat by pressing
- 13:03a button, right? You know, it's probably an
- 13:06umbrella in the door. So I.
- 13:07Was going to say other umbrellas in the doors.
- 13:09I'm excited for your article, man, because you've been like,
- 13:12here are the quirks and features of MM.
- 13:13Hmm. Mm hmm.
- 13:16Yeah, yeah, should be an easy one.
- 13:18So it starts at 99 five, that's the base without any options
- 13:23like what is the one that you're driving?
- 13:26Retail. Yeah, I've got to pull the
- 13:28Monroney sticker, but I know it starts at 99 five.
- 13:31There is a smaller engine, or at least one that's less complex
- 13:34that has a little bit less power, and I think that one may
- 13:38start a little bit less. But you know, if you are, I
- 13:42don't know if you want to be driven, you don't have many
- 13:44options, right? This would be 1 as a driver's
- 13:47car. It's not a bad thing.
- 13:48I mean, it's relatively quick. It stops well, you know, but
- 13:52it's probably not what I would choose to drive myself.
- 13:56I don't know that there's a short wheelbase version or a
- 13:58sporty version necessarily. It's just it's kind of
- 14:00everything that I don't look for in a car, but it's also kind of
- 14:04kind of amazing. And you know, as I get older and
- 14:08wearier and you know, my, my, I guess my priorities change.
- 14:12I assume cars like this will be more appealing or not, I don't
- 14:17know. It's a great car.
- 14:18It's a hell of a lot of fun for a week.
- 14:19We're going to do fun family things in it.
- 14:21We're going to write about it. And, you know, I mean, it's,
- 14:24it's a, it's a, it's a hell of a thing.
- 14:26It's a hell of a. Yeah, well, enjoy the
- 14:29experience, you know, I mean, and that's kind of the fun of
- 14:31getting to try different cars as you get to try it on and you
- 14:34don't have to live with it if you decide it's not for you.
- 14:37I will say I've had two people come up to me as the car was
- 14:40parked in front of the house and said nice car.
- 14:43I don't know that they know what it is, right.
- 14:45I think probably see the wing thing things to Bentley,
- 14:47honestly, or something. Right.
- 14:49But no one's ever said shit about the GT4 or the pole star.
- 14:53But I've had two people in two days comment on how much they
- 14:56like the Genesis. So.
- 14:57Wow. But next time I'll ask them, do
- 14:59you know what it is or do you know, like, you know, is this.
- 15:01No, I mean, it's just, you know, I don't know what.
- 15:03Yeah. Like, I didn't really know that
- 15:05this car existed. It was not on my radar.
- 15:06Sure, the G70 or the, you know, sedan or the SUV, the GX-70 or
- 15:11you know, whatever, but. You should make some bullshit
- 15:13up. You should tell them it's a pro
- 15:15the time Bentley and they're not allowed to take any pictures of
- 15:17it and it's just wearing a Genesis badge so no one realizes
- 15:22and see how far. That's very good.
- 15:24I've done things like that, Dan. So, so maybe record next.
- 15:28I'll have a story for you. Expect a phone call from Bentley
- 15:31PR. Yeah.
- 15:35How far can you take it before you know it's bullshit?
- 15:37Like kind of like that letter, that Coldplay guy letter that
- 15:40you wrote where I thought it was pretty real until the bit of
- 15:43until he quoted Coldplay. The lyrics.
- 15:47Yeah, which by the way, you can't see this, you listeners
- 15:50and viewers. But you know, much like a Zoom
- 15:52call, when we record this, it's on a platform called Riverside.
- 15:54I'm Ryan Barkey. I see Lindsay, Josh and then
- 15:56there's a Chris Martin there to my left.
- 15:59Just to tribute to last episode, but presumably will people see
- 16:03if they watch on YouTube or does it?
- 16:06Yeah, I'll put some pictures in there.
- 16:08No, I mean the names. Do the names disappear?
- 16:11I believe they do, yeah. Yeah.
- 16:13Sorry. They'll see the car.
- 16:14They won't see Chris Martin. But I do love the tribute to the
- 16:17worldwide hero. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:19Not often that someone unites the entire world.
- 16:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, that the incidents of
- 16:26of or the incident of of recent days has sent Chris Martin into
- 16:31a tailspin. 25 kidding. This is turning into a podcast.
- 16:38It's turning into a bullying session, which takes my sad
- 16:43attempt at a segue. Bullying.
- 16:45Protocol, you know, Jalopnik, you know it's no auto blog, but
- 16:49occasionally they'll have a good article.
- 16:51One day get. There one day there's certainly
- 16:55no drive, but or certainly no trying.
- 16:58To start a start a battle of the.
- 17:01We love Jalopnik. Yeah, we like Jalopnik.
- 17:04And I think that's where we saw the article.
- 17:05And I guess there's some some legislation in play in Tennessee
- 17:10of all places. Now that would not be at the top
- 17:12of my list of of the states that would be implementing anti
- 17:16bullying legislation. But but basically if you're a
- 17:21kid and you're a Dick, they can take your driver's license away.
- 17:23If you are found cyber bullying, bullying someone in the
- 17:27classroom, or just generally being a jerk, they can take your
- 17:31driver's license away. And sounds OK to me.
- 17:35I don't think I can. We send this to adults, right?
- 17:40Well, what I think is so interesting too is I'm really
- 17:43curious to see if it gets passed in some form because we all know
- 17:47a lot of these go through, you know, multiple iterations and
- 17:50they have to go through multiple votes or whatever.
- 17:52If it does get put into law, I'll be really curious to see
- 17:56how often it's actually applied, like how often they have a
- 17:59chance to apply it. Right.
- 18:01How do you quantify it? You have.
- 18:02To like to actually be impacted and have your license taken
- 18:06away, you have to be convicted of bullying in court.
- 18:10So I'm curious, like, how often does that actually happen where
- 18:13it makes it to that level? But I wonder if even if somebody
- 18:18isn't officially convicted and doesn't officially lose their
- 18:21license, will the threat of this be enough to maybe keep a few
- 18:25more people you know, help them make nicer choices and treat
- 18:29each other better? Yeah.
- 18:31And this wasn't specific to automotive bullying, right?
- 18:33I I'd maybe have. Missed.
- 18:34No, no, no. The punishment would be
- 18:37bullying. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:39I thought it was like. Tailgating someone or.
- 18:41No, no. Clicking them off with driving
- 18:44the undertake or you know, no. Does that venture bullying?
- 18:48No. So it's any bullying.
- 18:49Yeah. So does that venture too close
- 18:51to sort of like thought policing like I don't know, but I.
- 18:55Don't know. I mean, you could like, I, I was
- 18:58surprised to learn that you could be convicted of bullying
- 19:01in court. I didn't know that was even a
- 19:03thing. Yeah, where were these laws when
- 19:04we were 13, Right, You know? Are politicians exempt?
- 19:10Yeah, well, that's right though. That's yeah, that's the irony,
- 19:12right? If you're making the laws, they
- 19:15don't apply. Yeah, it's what is it?
- 19:17Rules for me not or rules for thee not for me.
- 19:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:22That's, that's basically, But, you know, I mean, I, you know,
- 19:25I, I didn't have it half as bad as a lot of kids when I was
- 19:27younger. But I do remember I had one, the
- 19:29two, two bullies in my life, one when I was younger, one that was
- 19:32more, you know, 5th grade middle school.
- 19:33And I still remember that both their names.
- 19:36And I think I may have told the story at one time on one of the
- 19:38podcasts about I went back from my 10 year high school reunion
- 19:43and went in to get a car washed and that bully was washing my
- 19:47car. So sometimes.
- 19:50Karma is a bitch. Karma is a bitch and we do love
- 19:53her. And Lindsay, what was it?
- 19:55And they drive, but she drives a big truck and she drives.
- 19:58Yeah, she she drives a big bus and she remembers your name and
- 20:01address. Do you remember this?
- 20:04Do you remember the scene and Back to the Future when when
- 20:06Biff, you know, the scene flips and he starts washing the car.
- 20:09This is before he came president, by the way, But there
- 20:12was a brief moment in the Back to the Future.
- 20:15Reverse. Where where he was washed in the
- 20:18car and it just, you know, that felt OK.
- 20:20Wait, this moment has come to life.
- 20:22I'm living back to the future. So anyway, but that's
- 20:25interesting. I don't know, we'll see if it,
- 20:27you know, they'll probably attach it to some pork belly
- 20:29bill or something And and you know, it'll never come to
- 20:33fruition, but I don't know. I'm, I'm, I'm at least willing
- 20:36to learn more. You know, I, I think people, the
- 20:40level of civility has gotten to the point where we're all just
- 20:43looking for a fight, you know, a lot of the time, myself
- 20:46included. And I don't know, maybe we need
- 20:47a little reining in, but anyway. Yeah, I think you're right.
- 20:53Like that's maybe that would just be a good incentive to
- 20:57encourage people to treat each other.
- 21:01Yeah, especially the car. I mean, we know it would upset
- 21:03the car people, the threat. Of having a drive for a year.
- 21:06Might be enough to make. You righted it.
- 21:09The kids even care about driver's licenses anymore.
- 21:11And we've talked about this before the the move in my
- 21:13neighborhood and other neighborhoods near me is it's
- 21:15kind of what I remember being big in in Socal a couple years
- 21:18ago. It's these like motorcycle style
- 21:21electric bikes right whizzing around.
- 21:25I mean, that definitely seems to be where their hearts are these
- 21:29it may be time to regulate those two by the way, but.
- 21:32Yeah, I mean there are packs of those all over.
- 21:35I mean, especially when school's in session, it's just a constant
- 21:39parade of those into the junior high.
- 21:41I think the only, and now I'm not at the high school, so I'm
- 21:45not seeing what's happening there.
- 21:46But I think really the only impact of the electric bikes is
- 21:50that it is motorizing. It's putting kids on vehicles
- 21:53who are too young to have their licenses.
- 21:55So I don't know when they get to 16, you know, and they, yeah,
- 21:59they're, they're quick. So I don't know if they're
- 22:03getting to 16 and they're like, yeah, but I have this electric
- 22:05bike. I'm good.
- 22:07I mean, I know that would not have been me, but.
- 22:09Yeah, maybe they need to be licensed.
- 22:12And Speaking of licenses, Dan, you just got your.
- 22:15No, I just read today. I got plates.
- 22:18You got plates? OK, you have a hack.
- 22:22What's that? You have a hack if you want to
- 22:23get your plates in a Jiffy I. Do although I've got an anti
- 22:27hack as well. So the story is a few weeks ago
- 22:30I went into AAA. Yeah, so the Automobile
- 22:35Association of America can issue number plates.
- 22:38So I thought just. In California though, right?
- 22:42I don't know, it might be everywhere, but it worked in
- 22:44California. But as we talked about in the
- 22:47previous episode, I went to get it done a few weeks ago and they
- 22:51were like, where is your smog test?
- 22:53And I went, I beg your pardon, and I had to get the car smog
- 22:55tested, but no one told me. So I went back in this week and
- 23:00it was a very easy process. And I've got beautiful number
- 23:05plates that sit on the the Audi now.
- 23:09But the next step, which is what I'm not looking forward to, is
- 23:14in order to swap my Washington state driver's license for a
- 23:18California driver's license. Apparently the laws are so
- 23:22slightly different that you have to pass the written test and an
- 23:27eye test. So at the moment I've got
- 23:31ChatGPT creating quizzes for me on the the different questions
- 23:36that I might get asked. I think you're probably
- 23:38overthinking this. And if the eye test in
- 23:40California is anything like the eye test in any state I've ever
- 23:43lived in, it's a box that sits on the counter that you are able
- 23:46to use your glasses or contacts. And there's like a three inch
- 23:49tall, you know, set of numbers that you just have to, you know,
- 23:52I don't think it's real intense. The written test.
- 23:56That's pretty wild that you have.
- 23:58But I remember when I moved out here like so this was 11 years
- 24:01ago, someone said to me you should do like a pre driver's
- 24:06test with an instructor and you basically book an hour ahead of
- 24:10your test and they do the test with you and they tell you the
- 24:13the way to do it and stuff. And I was so close to getting
- 24:17100% on the practical. But I think if I had of got 100%
- 24:22the instructor gets investigated.
- 24:25So this guy knocked me down to points which was completely
- 24:29judge worthy and something that I'm still holding on to, right?
- 24:33Now, yeah, that's a boy and. I hadn't noticed.
- 24:36I'm really glad that you've worked through it and let it go.
- 24:38Yeah, so he was dead. You.
- 24:40Remember his? Name taken?
- 24:41Yeah, and now he's gonna be washing my damn car.
- 24:44Yeah. Karma's on the way to that guy's
- 24:47house right now in her bus. Come on.
- 24:49And for the record, listen, we're all big fans of car
- 24:52washes, car detailing. It's not this this, this, this
- 24:55wasn't this wasn't ammo NYC, OK, This was, this was your, your
- 24:59neighborhood, you know, car. It's not a yeah, it's not a
- 25:02knock on car wash. No, no, no at all.
- 25:05No. Big big fan of of those who keep
- 25:07our cars good. In each this space and hopefully
- 25:11I will have a driver's license soon.
- 25:13That's crazy. Yeah, it's, there's been a lot
- 25:16of that going around and I know, you know, obviously my fiance
- 25:19moved here and then I have other family that have moved here.
- 25:21And Dan, I don't know if you ran into this because maybe AAA
- 25:24helps, but here getting an appointment to get a Washington
- 25:28state license, they're booking out like 3 or 4 months.
- 25:33And but you need to have your license to renew your vehicle
- 25:36tabs or to switch the vehicle tabs here.
- 25:39And so people are people who have moved here knowing their
- 25:42tabs were going to expire and not, you know, they said, OK,
- 25:45I'll just renew them when I get to Washington in the correct
- 25:48state and then get here and can't get a license for several
- 25:50months. And they're going like, what do
- 25:53we do? So luckily, if you are in that
- 25:55situation, the office will give you an appointment sooner.
- 25:58But you have to go in and sort of plead your case and say,
- 26:01like, this car is going to be unregistered.
- 26:04What do we do? What's the problem here?
- 26:06Like, where are they dropping the ball?
- 26:07It's not like, you know, you have a million people moving to.
- 26:10I think part of the reason is because in May this year they
- 26:15updated the flight details, right?
- 26:18So you have a. Real ID.
- 26:20Well, but so here's the weirder thing too.
- 26:22They're still issuing the old IDs.
- 26:24They're still issuing regular IDs, but then when you go to the
- 26:27airport, they're like, where's your real ID?
- 26:28You have to have a real ID. Why would they even still be
- 26:31issuing the old ones? Do do we even know what the real
- 26:34ID entails? I know you get a little like a
- 26:36like a like a Dallas Cowboys star on your piece of plastic.
- 26:42I think if you then get stopped by the police, you can use it,
- 26:44yeah. Yeah, I'm like, oh, the jokes
- 26:46right themselves or do they? Yeah.
- 26:49Well, it's yeah, I think it's a more extensive like you have to
- 26:52provide more documentation to. Get it?
- 26:54But what's weird is that, yeah, they said, OK, we'll give you an
- 26:58earlier appointment, but we aren't doing the REAL ID at the
- 27:01earlier appointment. So you're going to have to come
- 27:02back for that. It's a mess, bureaucracy.
- 27:06Across the board, it's a mess. Somebody lived in Chicago for 20
- 27:09years. I can tell you no matter what
- 27:11you're dealing with, it's probably not as bad as what you
- 27:13deal with there. That said, here in Denver, if
- 27:19you live anywhere in the state but Denver, you have one set of
- 27:21DMVS. If you live in Denver, you have
- 27:24a different set of DMVS. So go figure What?
- 27:26Does that even. Mean you just if you live in
- 27:30Denver, you can't go to a DMV like in the next county over,
- 27:33right? Yeah, it's it's really.
- 27:36Yeah, I have no idea. I'm sure.
- 27:38Yeah, sure. There's a reason.
- 27:40Sure it's. A very good reason.
- 27:43Speaking of good reasons, I'm sure there was a good reason
- 27:45someone stole Chris Harris E28M5 this week.
- 27:49But how about it? Either one of you know Harris at
- 27:53all? I don't.
- 27:54I mean, I met him briefly in Le Mans.
- 27:56We talked about the podcast for five seconds.
- 27:58That's true. So yes, of the three of us.
- 28:03Well, he said he was a fan. He.
- 28:05Likes that guy. He was like, yes, absolutely.
- 28:07I listen every week and I said well I do the same.
- 28:09Thing he heard it here first, so I didn't even know he had this
- 28:13car. I know he's had some GT threes
- 28:15and some other stuff, but apparently had this E28M5, yeah,
- 28:19the second best of all M fives, you know?
- 28:23Second only to the E39. Is that what we're saying?
- 28:26You know, I'm, I'm a sucker for the, what is it, the E 31?
- 28:33Is that the one that ahead of the one that he had?
- 28:36No, the one after E 31, right? The one that's got the the
- 28:39turbine wheel covers. Which was the V10 because they
- 28:42did AV 10. That was that's probably my
- 28:44least favorite M5. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:46I think we need to get them all reviewed on your the website.
- 28:50That you all right if you're listening.
- 28:51There's your next series. Yeah, I have successfully driven
- 28:56a career GT Surely you can throw me the keys to your M5 of each
- 29:01generation. But right.
- 29:03I love that E 28 though. That's a good one that that's
- 29:05when if you had one of those, that was something special.
- 29:07And I remember the first time I ever saw one of those.
- 29:09I was working in a record store in Wisconsin and a guy rolled up
- 29:13and I heard the exhaust and I never seen one.
- 29:15And you just didn't see M fives in Wisconsin.
- 29:18And I just thought that was the greatest thing ever.
- 29:21I probably told this story. I went out to him and said I'm
- 29:23not in a position to buy this car now, but someday I will be
- 29:25or you know, my dad will buy it here, take my information and
- 29:28when you're ready to sell it, I want to buy it.
- 29:29And he, he wrote me back recall it was just probably pre
- 29:32Internet. So he called and I've always had
- 29:35a special place in my heart for an E28.
- 29:37But anyway, he had one. Where was the thing parked?
- 29:40Was it on the street? Was it his house?
- 29:42Like sounded. Like it was parked on the street
- 29:45because of his, when he wrote about the recovery, he commented
- 29:49like these cars are becoming, like his feeling is the cars are
- 29:52becoming targets now. And so we have to be more aware
- 29:54or like more cognizant of where we're leaving them.
- 29:57So it sounded like it was not in a garage or something like that.
- 30:00OK, OK. So the the power of the Internet
- 30:04was that he published a story on Instagram that the car had been
- 30:09stolen. And.
- 30:11Within, I think it was within 24 hours, someone found the car,
- 30:16stood by it till he arrived. So like to make sure he didn't
- 30:20get stolen when he got there. And if you saw the video but
- 30:23they went in on one of the backside windows.
- 30:27So that was the way they broke in.
- 30:29But a funny story. They used to be away back in the
- 30:3280s, if you wanted to break into a BMW of a certain ilk, you
- 30:37would take a tennis ball and you would chop the tennis ball in
- 30:40half. You would cup it over the
- 30:43ignition. You know the the unlocking
- 30:46mechanism. And you would hit it hard and it
- 30:49would create a vacuum. And when it created a vacuum,
- 30:52all the central locking would pop up and you'd get into the
- 30:54car. So it was a pneumatic kind of
- 30:56thing? Yeah.
- 30:57Wow. How do you ignore this?
- 31:00Just just a life of crime, a life.
- 31:02Of crime, Well, Speaking of is, is like, you know, is this
- 31:06common? I mean, is the UK, you know,
- 31:08slipping? Like what?
- 31:10It depends on the cars, right? Yeah, For quite a while, Range
- 31:13Rovers were uninsurable in London.
- 31:15Really. Brand new ones.
- 31:16Really. Really.
- 31:18Because of you, you got a Range Rover trick.
- 31:20It involved a lacrosse ball and a can of WD40 it.
- 31:25Was a table tennis ball. You you winked your left eye
- 31:29three times and bound the table for the ball on the hood and all
- 31:31the doors pop. Up right.
- 31:33Also I think there's a joke about small balls and Range
- 31:35Rover drivers, but I'll. Save it for another show, yeah.
- 31:40That's the after hours. Right, right.
- 31:42That's. The Patreon, Yeah.
- 31:44Join us on the Patreon for the Off Coach.
- 31:46But the good news is he's got the car back.
- 31:48The bad news is did do a bit of damage.
- 31:50Yeah. So like.
- 31:51Would they, I mean just from driving it hard or?
- 31:54It was the electrics near the barrel, the ignition barrel, it
- 31:56was all kind of ripped out. But like, I don't know about you
- 31:59guys, but I put Apple Car tags in my cars.
- 32:03Is that something you guys thought about?
- 32:05Come on, Harris Monkey. Yeah.
- 32:08He may do that now. No, I haven't thought about it
- 32:11before, but I have heard of other people doing that.
- 32:13I think it's a smart like a good safety move if.
- 32:16I look, I can probably tell you where my GR Corolla that I sold
- 32:19two months ago is. That's what that rattle is.
- 32:24I made a minute. I saw one up here the other day,
- 32:27same color as yours and I was like is Dan's old one.
- 32:30Yeah, Could it be? Well, Dan can tell you.
- 32:32Yeah, exactly. I can tell you where it was a
- 32:36week ago and we can see if it was the same one.
- 32:38I just learned that I always wondered how those worked
- 32:41because again, I'll be turning 50 this year.
- 32:42Oh, Speaking of missing cars, and I've got this Genesis.
- 32:46I went to have some some work done today and on myself, car
- 32:50weeks coming up. And as we discussed before the
- 32:52show, I had big plans getting in shape, you know, looking good
- 32:56for car weeks. Brazilian buttocks.
- 33:00BBL. That's a good.
- 33:03BBL in under an hour. Well, I figure if I get my nails
- 33:08and my toes did I can at least have that going for me.
- 33:10But I I drove this thing and I parked it on the street and, you
- 33:12know, by itself under a tree. And I came out and, you know,
- 33:16sure enough, that car was nowhere to be found.
- 33:19I was out there walking around in circles with the remote car
- 33:23like I was 85 years old, you know, and I had just parked the
- 33:27car street over, of course and as.
- 33:30One does. It was I thought maybe, you
- 33:32know, the Kia boys had extended to, you know, Hyundai and and
- 33:35turned Genesis or something the Genesis boys.
- 33:37But I figured the Genesis takes more than a, you know, a.
- 33:41Tennis ball. A tennis ball.
- 33:43And a drummer called Phil. Yeah, that's, that's the other.
- 33:47That car only plays Genesis on the bank.
- 33:49No, it doesn't. But it does have moods, right?
- 33:52It has moods so you can get in and don't know who in the right
- 33:55mind would ever do it. But there are a handful of like
- 33:58moods. One of them is like driver
- 34:00Energizer. Another is like, you know,
- 34:02coming down gently or something like it's like real, like, you
- 34:06know, contrived things where it plays something on the on the
- 34:10screen, which could be, say hot air balloons, like floating
- 34:12around. But it's very, you know,
- 34:14obviously not real. Or I think one has a volcano and
- 34:16then it it emits a smell which I have not yet spelled myself.
- 34:20Maybe it's run dry and then, you know, I probably massages you to
- 34:24a certain rhythm and then plays that.
- 34:26It plays a soundtrack that's very much like you're on hold.
- 34:29So I don't know when you would actually do this, like outside
- 34:32of the showroom. But if you ever find yourself in
- 34:34the Genesis, please do promise you'll play with those.
- 34:38Please enjoy the. Whatever you do, if you've got
- 34:40the family in the car, don't click on the happy endings
- 34:42button. You gotta scroll all the way to
- 34:46the bottom. The hot air balloon Muzak mood.
- 34:51It's like these hot air balloons, like they're kind of
- 34:53going to and fro and like like, oh, please don't hit the
- 34:55mountain. Like it's really odd.
- 34:56It's like, you know, I don't know, old school animation or
- 34:59something. It's just very, very strange.
- 35:01But they're like. Look, we can make the pictures
- 35:03move. Like it's a zoetrope or
- 35:09something or whatever that mechanism is back in the but.
- 35:12Well, I always wonder about those too, because I know there
- 35:15was an event that I went to at Car Week last year and they were
- 35:17unveiling a car and it had a similar thing.
- 35:20So you can choose these sort of modes and our hope is that
- 35:23people will take, you know, 10 minutes for themselves when they
- 35:25get home and sit in the car and enjoy these.
- 35:27Is that what that is OK? Experiences, but yeah, when you
- 35:31see. Cars dispensing alcohol.
- 35:35Well, and when you think about like, OK, if you're you can
- 35:39play, it sounds like you can play them in the Genesis while
- 35:41you're driving. It's like, do we really want
- 35:43people going like, hey, look at the hot air balloon as they're
- 35:45driving down the road? Dan, you sent over a list of the
- 35:49most stolen cars, and I know it's not a genesis, but #1
- 35:54Hyundai Elantra #2, Hyundai Sonata, and then the Chevy
- 35:59Silverado, 15 hundreds, so. The American bit of Korean but
- 36:05is the Hyundai the Genesis cousin is that.
- 36:09Yeah, I think isn't it? Wasn't it Kia supposed to be
- 36:11sort of like the lower cars until they weren't and then it
- 36:15became more of a styling exercise.
- 36:16If you wanted something a little different looking you got a Kia
- 36:19and Hyundai was more traditional and then Genesis is just like
- 36:23fancy boy stuff so. Genesis isn't the luxury brand.
- 36:29Yes, yes, yes, yeah. And as expensive as a Lexus or
- 36:32anything else now. So yeah, you know, Dan, you sent
- 36:37in a comment about Supros and how they're having a moment.
- 36:39And I think you're right. I don't have a whole lot of
- 36:41super experience. Mine is limited to when my buddy
- 36:43Andy was supposed to be gifted A Supra by his father who was a
- 36:48car used car dealer. And he we had this vision of an
- 36:5286 and on and it ended up being an 85, which was a very
- 36:55different car. It was also an automatic and
- 36:58really wasn't that sporty, but got us through a summer, you
- 37:01know, working a summer job up in Wisconsin.
- 37:04But is it the? Is it the Gen. 5 that we all
- 37:07know and love that? From Fast and Furious.
- 37:11Is that the Gen. 4? We should know this.
- 37:13We have to edit this out. We're going to get a card taken
- 37:16away. Like the really good one, the
- 37:18one that was like 4.9 seconds to 60, right?
- 37:21Like in, you know, the 90s. The ones I saw were the 90s ones
- 37:27on Bring a Trailer and yeah yeah, yeah.
- 37:28Those are the. Those are the ones you.
- 37:29Want. I remember when those cars were
- 37:33like 40 grand. I know.
- 37:35And then there was a regular car and then there was a twin turbo,
- 37:37right? And but they had this, it was
- 37:40such a departure from the car before it had and someone, we're
- 37:44going to have 10 people or whatever correct this on the
- 37:46generation. But you know the one, it's the
- 37:48big basket. At least if it you got the
- 37:50turbo, it was the big basket sort of handle, you know,
- 37:53spoiler or wing in the back. It had this great cockpit that
- 37:56was, you know, driver oriented. They were legit fast.
- 38:01You know, they were really, really cool cars.
- 38:03There was a Targa version, right?
- 38:06You know, I've never driven one. Would love to drive one.
- 38:09You never see them, right? You see fewer of these than you
- 38:12do G 90s, right? Say it, but why?
- 38:19I mean, and honestly, the Genesis is probably almost as
- 38:21fast even if it doesn't feel like it, but that thing was a
- 38:23rocket back in the day and and why wouldn't they be $100,000
- 38:26right if Porsches of the era are are that right it?
- 38:32Makes you wonder which cars are undervalued, right?
- 38:34So. Are there any left I?
- 38:36Want to jump to my mind? Are those Nissan ZS from the 80s
- 38:41all? The ones our friend Jorge likes,
- 38:43he likes the 90 and on right, the 909190, yeah.
- 38:47I don't think they've had their moment yet, have they?
- 38:50No, and I remember it that much like the supers at the time,
- 38:52they were contemporaneous to each other.
- 38:54Yeah, I think the Supers were quicker, but there was also a
- 38:57non turbo and there was a turbo, right or twin turbo or whatever
- 39:01they used to make that beautiful pearlescent white 1.
- 39:03You know, that was that was hot stuff.
- 39:06But I don't think they were ever considered to be quite as good
- 39:08in the, in the era or in the time as the the Supras.
- 39:11But it would it would make sense that they would follow then,
- 39:14right? That those would be the next big
- 39:16thing. Or maybe they are.
- 39:17Or hey, you can tell us it's. We're getting, we're getting.
- 39:20No, no, you know that. I know boys, girls.
- 39:25Let me set you straight, dude. Bros, what's happening?
- 39:31We'll have to bring him on for that Jorge's corner again for 10
- 39:33minutes or? Nobody puts Jorge in a corner.
- 39:37Come on. That's true.
- 39:41Hey, here's a question for you. I have a a a friend listener to
- 39:43the show, an architect man about town named Matt.
- 39:49I don't know how to say his last name, but Matthew, I guess he
- 39:51goes by because he's an architect.
- 39:52Matthew, no last name. Thanks for joining us.
- 39:56Matt, it's called Matthew F He just fell into an interesting
- 40:01thing, which is do you remember the, the Volvo cross country
- 40:04like back like in the 2000s? It was, it was a great car.
- 40:08There was like a first generation.
- 40:10A wagon that was lifted, it had big wheels and tires.
- 40:14You know, there was a first generation, This is the second
- 40:16generation. This is this is the one that
- 40:18really kind of, you know, came into its own and he was able to,
- 40:24but they I think they made it like 2003, 2005.
- 40:26I mean, the car is 20 plus years old, right?
- 40:29He's a, he goes by scandomaniac on Instagram.
- 40:32You may know him by that. So he likes, he likes the, the,
- 40:34the cars of the people of the North, right.
- 40:36So he fell into this car. It was, I think a great Ant or
- 40:39something passed away. It's a 2003 cross country with I
- 40:44think 12,000 miles on it. So it's like rolled off the
- 40:48showroom floor, right? Yeah.
- 40:50But it is, it's not a Porsche, right?
- 40:53It's not a, you know, Ferrari or.
- 40:55Something it would be. High miles right for 2003.
- 40:59Does something like that appeal to either of you?
- 41:02It appealed to him. He got it for free, which is
- 41:04part of the I guess. I mean, that always makes
- 41:06everything more appealing. Come on.
- 41:09And I want to check it out because, you know, when is the
- 41:11last time you saw one of these things and when is the last time
- 41:14you saw one that was like new, right?
- 41:15Yeah. Well, you've got another
- 41:18article, haven't you? You could compare it to the all
- 41:21Rd. That's what I've been saying.
- 41:23Is that right? Sounds like a Volvo competitor
- 41:26to the All Rd. Yeah, right, right.
- 41:28Well, it doesn't. Volvo still make a lifted wagon?
- 41:32I don't know if they called the cross country, maybe it's the XC
- 41:34or something, but. Yeah.
- 41:35I think they've moved more towards like the smaller SUVs,
- 41:38maybe replaced, yeah. Yeah.
- 41:40As far but I. I like those things.
- 41:43Yeah. Back in the day, Hertz used to
- 41:44rent them. We'd try to get them whenever we
- 41:46could. I remember one time, you know,
- 41:48because they were off road, there was a, there was a, a, a
- 41:52railroad tie on the. No, actually, no, it was a, it
- 41:55was a, it was a telephone pole that someone was using in a
- 41:57parking lot. Like, is it, you know, a sort of
- 41:59a border? Yeah.
- 42:00And, you know, I looked at my buddy and said, yeah, yeah, we
- 42:03can drive over that, right? And it got stuck.
- 42:07It was a rental. I'm shocked, I'm shocked and.
- 42:11Then the people at the restaurant for the parking lot,
- 42:13like came out of the kitchen door like yelling at us.
- 42:15What are you kids doing? And, you know, just 20 years
- 42:17ago, 25. Years, the good job.
- 42:18It's not now because you'd have had that Hertz AI scanner.
- 42:22Yeah. Can we talk about that for a
- 42:23second like. Do we want anything?
- 42:25This is a this is a telephone pole on the ground.
- 42:28Clearly did this damage. Right.
- 42:30Yeah. It hasn't.
- 42:32That's it. All Seinfeld, you're going to
- 42:34beat one of these cars to death, right?
- 42:36And we, we, we did, but do you know about this AI scanner that
- 42:39we talked about this? Yeah, I think we're we did.
- 42:42But yeah, it's. I've been thinking about this a
- 42:45lot. Yeah, I guess if you're going to
- 42:48rent from Hertz, rent from one of your local, you know, in an
- 42:51old gas station type deals because they must have these at
- 42:55airports and basically they run this car through an MRI and then
- 42:58they see like what Dings didn't you know that are there that
- 43:02didn't exist before. That makes me if you didn't need
- 43:05another reason not to rent from Hertz.
- 43:07This may be this may be what what keeps me from them forever.
- 43:11Final nail. Right.
- 43:14Yeah, and it's. Sorry.
- 43:16High volume locations like where they're trying to run the cars
- 43:18through like an airport or something like that.
- 43:21Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's and it's not, I just don't
- 43:26trust them. That's my problem.
- 43:28I, I'm pretty confident I can rent a car and not damage it,
- 43:31right? But who's to say that, you know,
- 43:34it wasn't the guy before me or the girl before me or whatever.
- 43:37And I just, Hertz doesn't have a very good track record of trust
- 43:40and, you know, all the things you want in a relationship.
- 43:43There you go, you heard it here first.
- 43:46Yeah, Hertz is the Coldplay guy of rental.
- 43:49Car Next Week's episode brought to you by car rental Hertz.
- 43:54And Astronomy dot AI. Sort of wise, yeah.
- 44:00Do you have a, do you have a favorite car rental place either
- 44:03of you like is who's your go to? Who do you have points with who
- 44:06you know? No points, but I've had really
- 44:08good luck with Avis particularly.
- 44:10Avis. Eli at Avis in Monterey, right?
- 44:14Would he be using his services in three weeks time?
- 44:17Possibly. We'll see.
- 44:20What would you think about getting him on the show?
- 44:22Do we talk about this? That would be fun.
- 44:24I'm sure he's got stories we can get.
- 44:28We can get an insider's expert opinion on the Hertz AI scanner.
- 44:32Yeah, yeah. Or.
- 44:33We might need to get a representative from a car rental
- 44:36company who is definitely not Eli and like do that thing where
- 44:39the pictures black so you can't see his actual face and and that
- 44:43way he can tell us all the stories.
- 44:45Yes, yes, very deeply. It's like a silhouette, but it's
- 44:48a super distinctive silhouette. Let me tell you a little thing
- 44:51or two about hurts. You're like, yeah, I didn't.
- 44:53Definitely know Eli. Right.
- 44:55Hey, weren't you my gym teacher in middle school?
- 44:57The voice is familiar. Wait a minute.
- 44:59That's my. Favorite word?
- 45:01They like, barely blur it and they don't change the voice.
- 45:04They're like, you know, we can see you, right?
- 45:06It's like a little kid playing hide and seek.
- 45:08They're like look. Moves around.
- 45:11Yeah, like. No shoot.
- 45:13Not working shoot. Yeah.
- 45:15Well, it made you feel comfortable, but yeah, doesn't
- 45:17work. I'm looking at her show notes
- 45:20here. And Lindsay, you had some.
- 45:22You've seen some crazy cars on the road in Seattle, OR.
- 45:25Some SoCal very crazy cars. Some really random.
- 45:27Seattle lately, yeah, and there's it's been like K car
- 45:31heavy. I saw one the other day.
- 45:34And like, like Japanese K car, Sir.
- 45:37I'm thinking like everyone's cruising around in like a coca
- 45:40at Lebaron's, OK? No, no, no, no, like.
- 45:43Thank you, Derek. Kei Yeah, they no, I saw a
- 45:47Suzuki cappuccino which are teeny tiny.
- 45:50And then I saw. I mean, and I saw another one
- 45:55that was cappuccino sized, but it wasn't a cappuccino.
- 45:58And I don't know what it was. I couldn't get close enough to
- 46:00see what it was. But I saw it on the freeway.
- 46:02Yeah. And nothing emphasizes maybe, I
- 46:06mean, nothing emphasizes the teeny tininess of those cars,
- 46:10like seeing it on the freeway. And there was definitely a
- 46:13discussion of like, would you drive one of those on the
- 46:16freeway? And I do not think I would.
- 46:18Yeah. Yeah, but yeah.
- 46:20And then I saw a Toyota will which.
- 46:22What's a Toyota will? It's it's the only time I've
- 46:25ever seen it and it's like, it really looks like a cartoon come
- 46:28to life is the only way to describe.
- 46:29It I mean, it's got. Like this up sharp angles and
- 46:32diagonal lines and it's sort of like a like puffed up cabin with
- 46:36big. Nose, it looks like that.
- 46:39It looks like that was the Citroen van or whatever that had
- 46:42that. Chopped.
- 46:43But they, like, chopped it up. Yeah, it's.
- 46:45Yeah. Wow.
- 46:45And the one I saw was like a Unicorn, pinkish silver.
- 46:49So it added to the like cartooning us.
- 46:51Sure. Yeah, look at that.
- 46:53That's an odd talk about getting in an accident.
- 46:56Yeah, yeah, looks. Like it's already been in an
- 46:59accident. Yeah, describe what you were
- 47:03going for here with this design language.
- 47:06Well, imagine post accident and there you have it.
- 47:10But like they do a like they do like a soft top roof.
- 47:16Oh man. You can get it.
- 47:17You can see the roof. Well, the hard top looks exactly
- 47:20like a Karen haircut brought to life.
- 47:23But it looks like a can of sardines.
- 47:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's got a jaunty angle to the
- 47:28roof line. It's.
- 47:29Yeah, and it peels back. The roof peels back.
- 47:32Oh, interesting. Yeah, that's something that you
- 47:35don't see much anymore. Yeah, yeah, The last couple cars
- 47:39I could think of that had those what are the California tops or
- 47:42whatever? Right.
- 47:43Those peel back those sardine tops was there was.
- 47:46Do you remember the 318 TI you could get?
- 47:49Oh yeah, soft top. I think a very few of those in
- 47:51the States had those. And then there was a weird like
- 47:52Jeep Liberty that had those of all things I don't.
- 47:56Think I ever saw one of those. I always think of the the Nissan
- 47:59Murano convertible. That's a proper convertible,
- 48:03Lindsay. As I know it's not a peel back,
- 48:06but it just it's such an absurd proposition that it make like it
- 48:09might as well be a peel back. Top.
- 48:11You have one. These are $8000 to buy, all
- 48:14right? Don't ask me how I know.
- 48:16I had dozen. 2 wheel drive, a 1.3 litre engine automatic.
- 48:22I'm surprised they even made it onto the freeway.
- 48:25Yeah. There's something.
- 48:27What a foreground. Here's one for four.
- 48:29Oh wow. Hey, what a what a name the will
- 48:33that's like the Brandon or the exactly you know, it's a very
- 48:36benign for like older brother. For like the two hour, yeah.
- 48:42The Toyota determination, yes, I think we will get on the
- 48:45freeway. Yeah, the determination, yeah.
- 48:48And then, yeah. And then the other one I saw was
- 48:50a Ford Crown Vic sedan from the 80s driving on the freeway, and
- 48:54it was for sale. Yeah, I was.
- 48:56Never see those anymore. This used to be.
- 48:57Ever, I know. I remember when the police cars
- 49:00were those, Right? Yeah.
- 49:02So like, you knew to watch out for those quad, you know,
- 49:04rectangle headlights, you know, behind you.
- 49:06It's. Yeah.
- 49:07Yeah, definitely. Like I would be lying if I
- 49:10didn't debate getting the number off of the for sale sign just
- 49:13because like it's just, it's one of those things where you just
- 49:17go like how can you not? Do you ever long for like an ex
- 49:20police car of any sort? Like I do not.
- 49:25I know one of our friends in California has a fleet of X, you
- 49:29know, police cars and I know, you know, Jay Leno and his show
- 49:31has has had some of these Mustangs and things.
- 49:34But I always thought it'd be kind of cool that, you know,
- 49:36maybe a Crown Victoria is too old now.
- 49:38I was like the Dodge diplomat that ages me because that was
- 49:42kind of a rare police car back in the day.
- 49:45But I think it'd be something about a, you know, a relatively
- 49:47new, you know, Ford Explorer or, you know, Taurus or something
- 49:50with the spotlight and. The Spotlight.
- 49:54Bullying. Think of the things.
- 49:55Yeah, Speaking of bullying, I'm determined to lose my license
- 49:59for a year. Used your eyes on this
- 50:01spotlight. Well, I would love that.
- 50:04The police cars are actually. It's a different vehicle.
- 50:08You go like a police explorer and like, really it's like a
- 50:11Mercury Marauder or something. Yes.
- 50:14Like a police interceptor, Like I love that they get they're
- 50:18different enough, they get their own names.
- 50:19Yes, yes, yes. I don't know how different they
- 50:21really were, but you know, it made for a better sale.
- 50:24I said this the Mercury. What's in a name, right?
- 50:27Yeah. Was there a less impressive
- 50:28muscle car in the Mercury Marauder?
- 50:31Sounds amazing, doesn't it? Yeah, it does.
- 50:34I don't think much more. Tune you up and spit you out and
- 50:37really not. Meant to compete with the with
- 50:40the s s, right? The Impala SAS based on the
- 50:42Caprice, which actually did I think have some power to it
- 50:46because I think it was a detuned Corvette engines.
- 50:49I don't know. The Michael La Sasso is pounding
- 50:51his Where are you this keyboard right now?
- 50:56Anyway, Dan, come on. You've sent me on a rabbit trip.
- 50:59Like a rabbit hole trip. And on YouTube, apparently
- 51:02there's a first look for a new 2025 Toyota wheel.
- 51:07Ah, so I would encourage our listeners to go look at that
- 51:10because it's still ugly. Where there's a will, there's a
- 51:12way. Go look and put your deposits
- 51:15in. Right.
- 51:17I mean a brand new will what's? Not yeah, yeah, yeah, probably
- 51:21not. What if they did a GR will?
- 51:24Well, now we're talking. Yeah.
- 51:27Yeah, yeah, there's, I mean, there's, there's a lot going on.
- 51:30You should buy one and put an Apple tag in it, Dan.
- 51:32That's right. That is right, but just.
- 51:34Leave it with the keys in it and then we can just watch.
- 51:36We're like, this is social experiment.
- 51:38That's worth it for four grand we're.
- 51:40Trying to get it stolen so we can see what happens.
- 51:42Please stay on me. Danny didn't answer my question.
- 51:45You live in California now? Yeah, land of chips.
- 51:48You know, any desire to own an ex police car just for, you
- 51:51know, shits and giggles? I think maybe a charger or a
- 51:54challenger. Yeah, there you go.
- 51:56Just to get people to move out of the left lane, Yeah, that
- 52:00would be the only reason. Yeah, yeah, that'd be fun.
- 52:03I think it'd be, you know, fun for a weekend, right?
- 52:06Yeah. No.
- 52:06Then you're probably playing with fire, but.
- 52:08You're gonna go from the Genesis 90 to an ex police car.
- 52:11Yeah, yeah. Just for the weekend, yeah.
- 52:14We are helping you Ryan, with all your future articles.
- 52:17No, I appreciate it. You guys are a font of a font of
- 52:20ideas. Shoot, what else we you know,
- 52:24we're at 51 minutes. It's almost a show, but I got
- 52:28together. So you know, I've talked about
- 52:31Fuel Fed, got the shirt on tonight.
- 52:33Love Fuel Fed started with this group, I don't know, 20 plus
- 52:37years ago, I think maybe 1520 years ago back in Chicago.
- 52:41They are such a good car enthusiast group.
- 52:45They're just just a great group. Everything they do much like
- 52:47Avance, right? They just everything they do is,
- 52:49is done, done, right. Started in in Chicago.
- 52:53They have a chapter down in Fort Lauderdale and a chapter here in
- 52:55Boulder or over there in Boulder.
- 52:59I'm on the other side of the tracks, but shout out to them.
- 53:02They were going to do something very cool last night.
- 53:04There's a piece of property that one of the guys in the group
- 53:06owns. It's where Zuffin Grupa and
- 53:09other events for Fuel Fed have been held.
- 53:12And they were going to do an outdoor movie where they showed
- 53:15a classic car movie. I think it was Grand Prix with
- 53:20what's his name, that one of those, one of those classic
- 53:24stars of screen. Yeah.
- 53:25It wasn't Steve McQueen. It was.
- 53:29Yeah, Yeah. But it would have been so much
- 53:31fun. And then we had a little bit of
- 53:33weather and so it didn't happen. And so some of us still showed
- 53:37up because, you know, we just didn't get the e-mail in time or
- 53:40whatever. So there's a group of about
- 53:41eight of us that went out for a drink at A, at a nice boulder,
- 53:47you know, establishment and. And that was not outside, so it
- 53:50wasn't weather. Defense, not outside and it
- 53:52ended up, you know, it would have been fine, but you know,
- 53:54you don't want to get your screen wet.
- 53:55I get it, you know, but we were talking and pretty much I think
- 53:59everyone but one at the table was or is going to car week.
- 54:03And you know, it's so got us talking about what we're doing,
- 54:08what we're not doing, you know, and it's just, I'm so excited.
- 54:12It's going to be so great. It's 3 1/2 weeks away from the
- 54:15time you hear this, maybe even 3 weeks, right?
- 54:17Got to check the calendar. It's going to be here before we
- 54:19know it. It's going to be amazing.
- 54:21Every time I turn around, there's some new event that's
- 54:23popping up or new opportunity. It's just going to be epic.
- 54:26I just, I, you know, it's going to be great.
- 54:29You guys, are you feeling the excitement?
- 54:31Is it? Yeah.
- 54:32Yeah. You look excited.
- 54:34I wanted to give you both. A challenge maybe for next week.
- 54:36OK, please, Which is maybe go and have a look at the auction
- 54:41site for Car week and come back with two cars that you think our
- 54:46listeners won't have realized are in the auctions.
- 54:50So these big ticket cars always get a lot of press, but some of
- 54:55these cars are like there's hidden fines or really
- 54:58interesting cars. So two cars for next week from
- 55:02all the auction sites. So that's everyone that's got an
- 55:04auction, but just come up with two.
- 55:07You know what, Speaking of hacks, that's a Car week hack.
- 55:10If you're new to Car Week, I know we've got a few friends,
- 55:12this will be their first car week, you know, and they ask,
- 55:15well, what should we do? What shouldn't we do?
- 55:16And some of these events are expensive, right?
- 55:18Like Pebble and Quail and other things.
- 55:20You know, all the auction houses are there and oftentimes the
- 55:22previews are, are very, very inexpensive, right?
- 55:25Some might even be free, I don't know.
- 55:26They probably got to pay for all of them, but they're like 20
- 55:28bucks or 40 bucks or whatever, right, to get in.
- 55:30They're very, very inexpensive. And the cars there are as
- 55:33amazing sometimes as anything you'll see anywhere else, right?
- 55:36And they're for sale. So if you get drunk and got your
- 55:40Amex card, you know, but so don't go to the auctions, go to
- 55:46the previews and they're always a very good time.
- 55:49And you'll be amazed at who you see and who you run into.
- 55:51And, and it's just, I, I think that's the dollar, you know, for
- 55:56dollar, whatever, that's the, the best you can do at car week.
- 55:59But, and to Dan's point, there's always some amazing stuff.
- 56:02And I'm always amazed at some of the stuff that like, oh, wow,
- 56:04OK, this is auction grade stuff now.
- 56:07This is stuff I grew up with, right?
- 56:08Or used to see. And, and now it's like, you
- 56:11know, at auction, you know, car week, right, how, how things
- 56:14have changed. So and then race cars too, they
- 56:17always have a lot of race cars and cars with provenance and.
- 56:19Yeah, which is fun. But yeah, I think you're right,
- 56:21right. It is like an illustration of
- 56:24you kind of go like time is passing.
- 56:27You're right to see some of the cars where you go.
- 56:28Wait a minute, this isn't an auction already.
- 56:30I know, I know. Really good settings.
- 56:34So if you go to if you go to RM, then that's kind of downtown,
- 56:39isn't it in, in Monterey. If you go to Pearl Arrow, then
- 56:44that's actually at the Jet Center, which is where the
- 56:47Wednesday night party is. So you're seeing part of the
- 56:50cars from that collection. I think Meekum's are on a golf
- 56:54course and they've got some interesting cars this year and
- 56:58I'm missing a couple. Of Gooding I think is, is that
- 57:01like a farm or ranch right last? Year Gooding is next to the
- 57:03quail, isn't it, Lindsay? It's Gooding is at.
- 57:09I'm thinking of bottoms Gooding is is.
- 57:10Bottoms next to. Is that Pebble?
- 57:13Yeah. We say RM Sotheby's.
- 57:16Sotheby's is down in Monterey, OK, OK.
- 57:19I think they're the main ones. Hopefully we've not missed
- 57:21anyone, but if we have, come sponsor us and we'll make sure
- 57:24we represent you correctly. Absolutely.
- 57:27And the coolest thing is because you know, we're 2-3 weeks before
- 57:32four weeks. I don't know about 3 weeks, I
- 57:33guess before the grand, which follows.
- 57:35And so it's happened before where someone's gone and bought
- 57:38a car at auction during car week and then ended up driving it in
- 57:43the grand. That's not how you're supposed
- 57:44to do. You're supposed to get the car,
- 57:46you know, okayed way before, but it has happened.
- 57:48Ask me how I know and, and some amazing stuff has come of it.
- 57:53And and if someday, you know, one of us is you know that much
- 57:57of A baller or could do that and then show up in.
- 58:00Some when when we all have cars that we can drive in the ground.
- 58:03Exactly, Exactly. Well, Speaking of markers of
- 58:06time, I mean, that time is running out.
- 58:09Like tomorrow is today. I'm.
- 58:11I'm realizing. Yeah, this great pie in the sky
- 58:14dream. You know, I thought my life
- 58:16would. Listen, we're going to speak it
- 58:19into existence and we're all on the grand racing each other.
- 58:23Hey, guys, we're living, we're living good lives.
- 58:25Think about the things we're doing.
- 58:26We're going to we're doing things like the grand, you know,
- 58:29I mean, this is, you know, most people don't get to do this
- 58:32stuff And and you know, we're life is good.
- 58:35Life is good. In the range genesis.
- 58:38Yes, I mean I may just go. Out in the the Land Rovers,
- 58:42haven't you, Lindsay? Yeah.
- 58:43Yeah, I know. I know the experiences that
- 58:46we've gotten to have and when you think about like going to
- 58:49the auction previews, one of the things I love is it's a little
- 58:52calmer and you can just sort of take your time and you get to
- 58:55get up close with the cars. What's interesting is a lot of
- 58:58times you see, you know, you do see prospective buyers, they're
- 59:02meeting with representatives from the auction houses or you
- 59:04see them moving some of the cars.
- 59:06Yes. Last year they were moving a car
- 59:08that I think was from 1920. Really.
- 59:11When do you see one of those in motion and they.
- 59:13Move. It to the tent, you know, it's
- 59:15unbelievable. And I should add that you don't
- 59:18have to necessarily pay. You can register to be a bidder
- 59:20and then you don't have to pay a cent.
- 59:22In there, that's true too. That too SO.
- 59:24Well, and I think a lot of the previews depending on especially
- 59:27if you go earlier in the week, I don't know that you have to pay
- 59:29to go. OK, right on.
- 59:30OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:31See, this will only be my second.
- 59:33You're like a I'm an. Old.
- 59:36Man, you're a lifer. Veteran was what I was thinking
- 59:38of. Veteran.
- 59:39Yeah, veteran. There we go.
- 59:41Car week lifer. Yeah.
- 59:43Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think sometimes we have to
- 59:45stop and realize how good we have it.
- 59:46It's easy to get caught up in the crap of the day-to-day, you
- 59:48know, I was, that's why I enjoyed doing the show with you
- 59:51guys every week, you know, right.
- 59:52I can start in one mood and by the the time you know we wrap it
- 59:55up, I'm in generally a month. You're in a different mood.
- 59:58We don't make any promises that it's better.
- 1:00:01Yeah, but it's different than when you start.
- 1:00:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. At that car show, everything is
- 1:00:07perfect, right? And on that note, should we call
- 1:00:11it a show? I think we're right at an hour.
- 1:00:13Guys, on that note, always be driving.
- 1:00:16I was just going to say we we've saw a lot of good feedback from
- 1:00:19last week, so thank. You, everyone.
- 1:00:21And it is important if you write us a review, we'll be very
- 1:00:24grateful. Yes.
- 1:00:26And if you do write us a review and you see us at Carl Week, we
- 1:00:28will definitely have stickers for you.
- 1:00:30Absolutely. That's the way.
- 1:00:32Absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:34We really do appreciate all the all the feedback.
- 1:00:35It means the world. Sometimes we forget people
- 1:00:37actually listen to this thing. And so when we're reminded, it's
- 1:00:40kind of nice and. Yeah, yeah, we got a text,
- 1:00:46didn't we? The comment this week was my
- 1:00:48wife loves the show and she doesn't even like cars.
- 1:00:51Yeah, yeah. I think that was from Rich.
- 1:00:54That's a compliment of the highest order.
- 1:00:56Yeah. It is.
- 1:00:57It is so well, let's keep this this thing going.
- 1:01:01Keep on trucking and and look forward to next week.
- 1:01:05So keep, yeah, keep on driving and keep on listening.
- 1:01:10That's right, always be driving. Always be driving.
- 1:01:14You think I know the damn tagline?
- 1:01:15On your. Tag.
- 1:01:20All right. Thanks guys.
- 1:01:22Thanks so much. We'll see you next week.
