- 0:09Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I'm Mike D.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Giovanna, joined by my regular co host Mark Trumbo, and
- 0:16Speaker 1: as you can see, we have a very special guest
- 0:19Speaker 1: with us today, Tory Hunter, former Angels outfielder, current special
- 0:24Speaker 1: assistant to the Angels General manager. Tory Welcome to the show.
- 0:29Speaker 1: How are you doing on this morning of the Angels
- 0:32Speaker 1: home opener tonight?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Well, first of all, thank you guys for having me.
- 0:36Speaker 2: It's great to be with my old teammate, Mark Trumpbo,
- 0:39Speaker 2: Mike D. G Ivanni. Man, you've always reported the news correctly.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate that.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Thank you guys for having me on the show. All right,
- 0:51Speaker 2: But yeah, this morning I woke up ready to go
- 0:54Speaker 2: open a day. I'm talking to you guys starting off,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and then we go to Angel Stadium and take care
- 1:00Speaker 2: of business there hopefully. All right.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Well, Tori, you were nine time Gold Glove winner, nicknamed
- 1:05Speaker 1: spider Man for your ability to scale walls and take
- 1:08Speaker 1: home run balls back. I'm gonna put you on the
- 1:11Speaker 1: spot right at the top here. What were your top
- 1:13Speaker 1: three catches of your career?
- 1:16Speaker 2: Man? Top three, I would definitely have to put just
- 1:21Speaker 2: the moment of the All Star Game in two thousand
- 1:23Speaker 2: and two. The guy that's hitting the ball is Barry Bonds,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and this is my first All Star Game. I'm twenty
- 1:30Speaker 2: five years old, and to be able to take away
- 1:34Speaker 2: a home run on a big stage like that from
- 1:36Speaker 2: one of the greatest hitters that ever played the game,
- 1:39Speaker 2: if not the best hitter they have played the game.
- 1:41Speaker 2: For me, a twenty five year old kid from Pompluth, Arkansas,
- 1:45Speaker 2: to take a home run away from Barry Bonds, definitely
- 1:48Speaker 2: probably my number one. Probably not my best catch, but
- 1:52Speaker 2: it was my greatest moment. And I was ay. Carlos
- 1:55Speaker 2: Lee with the White Sox hit a ball in the
- 1:57Speaker 2: Metro Dome and imp over that baggy fence out there
- 2:02Speaker 2: in center field and stretched out and caught the ball.
- 2:05Speaker 2: The next day, I was so sore, I felt like
- 2:07Speaker 2: I couldn't play, but you know, Trump Brow don't come
- 2:09Speaker 2: out of the game. And then number three, I would say,
- 2:16Speaker 2: with the Angels on Mother's Day, I made a catch
- 2:19Speaker 2: on Mother's Day against the Royals, and I was able
- 2:23Speaker 2: to catch that ball, and I was so pumped up
- 2:25Speaker 2: and so hyped that I almost passed out.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Of course, there was some great catches, and then there
- 2:33Speaker 1: was always the one that got away. Game two of
- 2:35Speaker 1: the twenty thirteen ALCS. You're playing right field for the
- 2:39Speaker 1: Detroit Tigers. You're in Fenway Park, Detroit has a five
- 2:42Speaker 1: to one lead. In the eighth inning, You're about to
- 2:44Speaker 1: go up two games to none on the Red Sox,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and upsteps Big Poppy. David Ortiz take us through that
- 2:51Speaker 1: sequence too.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Man, you know what's crazy as a story behind that.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Ortiz and I went to Capitol Grill to night before
- 3:00Speaker 2: and just we're sitting up talking. We're sitting up talking
- 3:03Speaker 2: and uh, he says, hey, I got wasquing Ben WASH's pitches.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, snap, right. So I went back to
- 3:12Speaker 2: the stadium the next day. The day of that game.
- 3:14Speaker 2: It was like, then, why you got to you gotta
- 3:17Speaker 2: change it up on Big Poppy. He said, he has
- 3:19Speaker 2: your pitches and Ben while I was like, man, I
- 3:21Speaker 2: forget that. I always get him out.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my god.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So now Suirsey comes out of the game in the
- 3:29Speaker 2: eighth inning and just struck out the side. We thought
- 3:32Speaker 2: he was going to go back out there, but I
- 3:34Speaker 2: saw Ben Wall running running to the man when I
- 3:37Speaker 2: went back out there in the night, and all of
- 3:39Speaker 2: a sudden, I'm thinking, like, I hope he doesn't throw
- 3:42Speaker 2: a change up because he knows it. It was an
- 3:44Speaker 2: eighty eight mile an hour change up and Dave Ortiez
- 3:47Speaker 2: hit the ball. I'm like, oh my god, I'm running
- 3:49Speaker 2: after this ball, swearing, pissed off. I'm like, I can't
- 3:54Speaker 2: believe this guy through this pitch. So it now it's
- 3:57Speaker 2: hit and it's in the lights, and I felt the
- 4:00Speaker 2: wall and I'm like, forget this. This is the ALCS.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I've never been to the World Series. That said, my life,
- 4:06Speaker 2: I do not to down this field today. I knew
- 4:08Speaker 2: I was gonna die, but I came back to life
- 4:11Speaker 2: after I got older, when I woke up on the
- 4:13Speaker 2: other side, I came back to life. So and then
- 4:15Speaker 2: the cop, you know, he was right there. He was
- 4:17Speaker 2: supposed to be protecting the service, but but he was
- 4:22Speaker 2: so far away. Man, he had no shot to help
- 4:24Speaker 2: with me. So, uh, it was just a It was
- 4:26Speaker 2: a great effort, great moment for the Red Sox, great
- 4:30Speaker 2: moment for Big Poppy, one of my one of my
- 4:32Speaker 2: best friends in the game. Uh, but that's that's all
- 4:34Speaker 2: our effort and I was thirty eight years old.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Does that play still kind of keep you up at
- 4:40Speaker 1: night or show up in your dreams?
- 4:42Speaker 2: Uh? No, that play doesn't show up in my dreams
- 4:46Speaker 2: at all. That pitch does, Oh yeah, because uh Ortiz
- 4:51Speaker 2: struck out three times that game. He didn't hit the
- 4:54Speaker 2: ball at all. And then he stepped up right there,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and the night before he told me that's all I
- 4:59Speaker 2: can remember. This guy had his pitches, and trust me,
- 5:03Speaker 2: first pitch eighty eight mile. Now he throws ninety eight. Yeah,
- 5:07Speaker 2: So how you sit on that in the first pitch? Right?
- 5:11Speaker 3: Well, you don't, you don't. And now you see what
- 5:14Speaker 3: I have to do with I mean, you caught you
- 5:16Speaker 3: caught almost fifty five hundred balls in your career. That's
- 5:19Speaker 3: fourteenth in history, and this man wants to talk about
- 5:22Speaker 3: the one you didn't catch right.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Just earlier?
- 5:29Speaker 1: How how iconic was this photo of the two v's
- 5:32Speaker 1: of the cop and unfortunately down to.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Did you know, hey?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Did you ever talk to that cop or autograph a
- 5:41Speaker 1: picture for him? Did you ever got you two ever
- 5:43Speaker 1: hook up? After that crazy photo?
- 5:46Speaker 2: I know him before that? Oh? Really? The spoken worst
- 5:49Speaker 2: of Oh yeah, he's a great guy. He had no shout.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I cracked a joke afterwards, and I said, man, he's
- 5:56Speaker 2: supposed to be protecting and suffer. I think people got
- 5:58Speaker 2: kind of serious. I'm like, I was joking. He's like
- 6:00Speaker 2: twenty yards away from the wall. Help me. I was
- 6:04Speaker 2: already dead.
- 6:06Speaker 3: All right, Well, one of the one of the rare
- 6:08Speaker 3: great guys in Boston, at least when you're on the
- 6:11Speaker 3: visiting team. But all right, all right, I got a question.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I got a question. It's a little more serious current,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but can you can you kind of take us through
- 6:20Speaker 3: what your day to day role looks like with the
- 6:22Speaker 3: Angels right now as a special assistant. It's a GM
- 6:25Speaker 3: Perry mnasium.
- 6:28Speaker 2: H Well, I mean I'm there. I'm like a shalllam monk.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And you you walk in the clubhouse, you get there
- 6:37Speaker 2: when they're there, and and I just I try to
- 6:40Speaker 2: be present. You know, you got guys. They have things
- 6:44Speaker 2: going on off the field. You got guys they have
- 6:46Speaker 2: things with finances, with relationships with their family, but also
- 6:50Speaker 2: in baseball they give it. I give them a different
- 6:53Speaker 2: perspective on different things and how to hit, you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: running a basis, preparing themselves. So I just try to
- 7:01Speaker 2: be available for all the guys, and then if Perry
- 7:05Speaker 2: needs an extra eye on evaluate something or someone. Actually
- 7:11Speaker 2: I'm there for them. They ask questions, but I try
- 7:14Speaker 2: to be available when I'm here and be at the
- 7:16Speaker 2: stadium as much as I can so they can see
- 7:18Speaker 2: me and be and be present for those guys.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I mean, that's invaluable. I think that you know, I've
- 7:26Speaker 3: kind of wondered too, what is that you know, special assistant?
- 7:28Speaker 3: You see that title and it's not always totally clear,
- 7:31Speaker 3: but it sounds like you're doing it all, which is
- 7:34Speaker 3: cool and really helpful for these guys. One question that
- 7:38Speaker 3: you know, I've been out of the game for five
- 7:40Speaker 3: or six years now, things have changed a lot. Can
- 7:44Speaker 3: you talk about like what the day to day work
- 7:46Speaker 3: looks like that the guys are doing compared to you know,
- 7:49Speaker 3: maybe when you played. I don't see as many guys
- 7:52Speaker 3: out there hitting batt in practice. Some teams rarely do
- 7:54Speaker 3: it apparently, And I'm wondering when when guys are working
- 7:57Speaker 3: on their defense and other things. I mean, I know
- 8:00Speaker 3: what we were used to, but it seems different to
- 8:03Speaker 3: me now. Is it is that true?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Uh? I feel like it was. I think this year
- 8:09Speaker 2: with Kurt Suzuki coming in. Uh, they really tried to
- 8:13Speaker 2: put more emphasis on defense. Uh. The guys are out
- 8:18Speaker 2: with Brady Anderson as the hitting coast. Now, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 2: he's gonna have him out there early hitting. I saw trout.
- 8:23Speaker 2: You know, he's there at eight in the morning on
- 8:25Speaker 2: the field hitting you know, extra and some guys will
- 8:27Speaker 2: go out with him so he can catch it, get
- 8:29Speaker 2: a break and uh. And the results are showing. Uh
- 8:34Speaker 2: in this early part of the season, and in spring
- 8:36Speaker 2: training he was actually hitting the ball, going back to
- 8:38Speaker 2: hitting line drives and and getting his pistol to hit. Uh.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I think he stopped hitting off the machine and and
- 8:44Speaker 2: uh and started going with live arm and uh and
- 8:47Speaker 2: and we definitely see some results. So these guys do work.
- 8:52Speaker 2: You know, they still have a lot of injuries in
- 8:54Speaker 2: Major League baseball. Uh. And and you got all this technology.
- 8:58Speaker 2: You guys got workout program, nutritionists, besides therapists. They got
- 9:02Speaker 2: everything they need. But at the same time, they got
- 9:05Speaker 2: more injuries. And so I don't understand that, but I
- 9:08Speaker 2: think it's they get a lot of days off. They
- 9:11Speaker 2: don't have the like when you're working out, you bench
- 9:15Speaker 2: press two hundred pounds, but if you do it enough
- 9:17Speaker 2: and then you max out. Then you can bench press
- 9:20Speaker 2: two twenty, then you can bench press two forty. I
- 9:22Speaker 2: think these guys got to push themselves to play every
- 9:24Speaker 2: day as much as they can if you have an opportunity,
- 9:27Speaker 2: and that'll actually your mind will overtake the body and say, hey,
- 9:32Speaker 2: you got to go out and perform, and it heals itself.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So if you keep you know, baby, and a lot
- 9:38Speaker 2: of these guys giving them days off because they don't
- 9:40Speaker 2: feel right or whatever it may be, then they don't
- 9:43Speaker 2: know how to push through those walls and then you
- 9:46Speaker 2: get a lot of injuries that way.
- 9:48Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna take a quick break for a
- 9:50Speaker 1: word from our sponsors, and when we come back, we're
- 9:52Speaker 1: going to talk about Mike Troutz move back to center field,
- 9:55Speaker 1: something Tory knows a little bit about, and we're gonna
- 9:58Speaker 1: talk about Tory's work with Joe Adell. We'll be right
- 10:00Speaker 1: back with more Halo Territory.
- 10:02Speaker 4: This episode is brought to you by Fox One. Go
- 10:05Speaker 4: get that new app, stream baseball, stream football, stream World

- 10:13Speaker 5: and get to a game, but well, and there. I'll

- 10:49Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with our special guest,
- 10:52Speaker 1: Tory Hunter. Tory Mike Trout back in centerfield this year
- 10:56Speaker 1: after toying with right field for a little bit. You
- 10:58Speaker 1: played centerfield mostly pretty much all of your career. In
- 11:01Speaker 1: a late career switch to right field.
- 11:07Speaker 2: What is it? You know?
- 11:09Speaker 1: Trout's talked about people have talked about this being easier
- 11:12Speaker 1: on your body moving the right field, but is it
- 11:15Speaker 1: really easier on your body? Is there any big difference?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Well, it's less running, especially if the dug out is
- 11:22Speaker 2: on the first base side. You you don't have to
- 11:26Speaker 2: run all the way across the field. But you know what,
- 11:30Speaker 2: there are some quick bursts in right field. Some balls
- 11:33Speaker 2: have a little seak, some got some balls have a
- 11:35Speaker 2: cut and you really have to really get after it
- 11:39Speaker 2: for about five to ten steps. In center field, you
- 11:43Speaker 2: go after and you can stay as smooth as possible.
- 11:45Speaker 2: And that's what I think Trout is talking about playing
- 11:48Speaker 2: center field. Actually, it's less on your body because you're
- 11:51Speaker 2: able to glide to the ball and uh and without
- 11:55Speaker 2: that quick burst and uh with with Trout having leg
- 11:59Speaker 2: injuries and his lower body, I definitely think that center
- 12:02Speaker 2: field and you know what, mentally him playing center field
- 12:06Speaker 2: and be able to be that kid again. I mean
- 12:08Speaker 2: he's thirty four years old, I think yeah, and uh,
- 12:11Speaker 2: just be in center field and be that kid again.
- 12:14Speaker 2: He still can run, he still can go after the ball. Uh.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It actually probably would help him in his total game.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So allow him to go and be that kid again
- 12:23Speaker 2: and be the Trout that his mind tells him to be.
- 12:26Speaker 2: He then his body will follow. Yeah.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of backing up bases and
- 12:32Speaker 3: things in the corners too that that people don't always
- 12:35Speaker 3: account for. You know, right field you counted on to
- 12:38Speaker 3: bust it, you know, and all the players to first base.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Whether everybody does that, you know, you can judge for yourself.
- 12:45Speaker 3: But uh, you know, I, yeah, played a lot of
- 12:48Speaker 3: right field. Couldn't hold your duck, but uh, you know
- 12:53Speaker 3: I would have liked to. Uh, but you know I
- 12:56Speaker 3: never had the speed.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Remote you know.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Part of this is is you have to have the speed.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Center field. Were fast, Yeah, you were really, That's what
- 13:05Speaker 3: I'll tell my daughter.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But down the line, you were my teammate for two years, so.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I know maybe, well I appreciate that even if you're
- 13:14Speaker 3: being nice. Uh, okay, so well, thank you very much.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I know it means a lot. Another thing that means
- 13:23Speaker 3: a lot, I think, probably to you. Joe Adell credited you,
- 13:27Speaker 3: uh with really helping him out, improving his approach at
- 13:30Speaker 3: the plate, improving his defense, especially in right field. I
- 13:33Speaker 3: mean I watched well now I watch every game, and
- 13:37Speaker 3: he made some tremendous strides and it really seems like
- 13:40Speaker 3: it came after the work you guys did. And I
- 13:43Speaker 3: know from you know, doing some coaching and hitting, especially
- 13:46Speaker 3: with hitters last few years. When you're not playing, kind
- 13:49Speaker 3: of the next best thing is getting credit, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 3: and it's not the credit, but you know, somebody's showing
- 13:54Speaker 3: appreciation for the work you put in to help them.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And that was really neat to see. Maybe if you,
- 13:59Speaker 3: if anything click with Joe that you can talk about. Uh,
- 14:02Speaker 3: was it more mental?
- 14:03Speaker 2: Maybe? Yeah, I definitely think it was more mental. I
- 14:08Speaker 2: think he's maturing. Uh. He's he's listening to more wisdom
- 14:13Speaker 2: and uh, and he's able to separate, you know, what
- 14:16Speaker 2: works for him and what doesn't work for him, So
- 14:18Speaker 2: you can give him a lot of options and whatever
- 14:20Speaker 2: doesn't work, he's he's mature enough to throw it out
- 14:23Speaker 2: the window and and keep the things that does. And
- 14:26Speaker 2: I think that's just maturation over time. He's uh, he's
- 14:31Speaker 2: starting to gather the right information. He's starting to shoot
- 14:34Speaker 2: the ball the other way a little more, uh, so
- 14:36Speaker 2: he could cover the whole field. This guy has tremendous
- 14:39Speaker 2: a tremendous amount of pop, you know, maybe the highest
- 14:43Speaker 2: exit velocity on the team, uh, majority of the time.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And uh and the ball that flies out the right
- 14:49Speaker 2: center field, he has more power than most people I know,
- 14:52Speaker 2: maybe not you, Trumbo, but this guy has some thumb
- 14:54Speaker 2: and right, he's got some and Uh. And if the
- 15:01Speaker 2: you know, the last two or three years we're in
- 15:03Speaker 2: the outfield, all he wants to do is get better defensively.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Hitting is like it has his ebbs and flows, it's
- 15:10Speaker 2: up and down, and defense should never slump. And I
- 15:13Speaker 2: told him, you want to play a long time play
- 15:14Speaker 2: defense because if he can be relied upon defense. When
- 15:18Speaker 2: you're struggling at the plate and you're not good at defense,
- 15:21Speaker 2: then you're not good at all of the team. But
- 15:24Speaker 2: when you struggling at the plate and you actually saved
- 15:26Speaker 2: runs on defense, you actually can keep yourself in the game.
- 15:30Speaker 2: And sometimes making good plays on defense can carry over
- 15:33Speaker 2: to your offense. So uh, he wants to get better defensively,
- 15:37Speaker 2: and you can see the improvement in the last two
- 15:40Speaker 2: or three years.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Sorry, Mike, Uh, you don't get enough credit for your
- 15:48Speaker 3: throwing arm. I think you know, everyone talks about your
- 15:51Speaker 3: you know, the the acrobatic players, the you know Robin
- 15:54Speaker 3: home runs, But I mean you had literally the most
- 15:59Speaker 3: accurate throwing arm that I played. I mean I played
- 16:01Speaker 3: first base. So part of the time you're counted on
- 16:03Speaker 3: to cutballs that have you know, side spin, not online.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Sometimes you're going to cut them if the runner might
- 16:09Speaker 3: be safe at home and the batter runner is going
- 16:12Speaker 3: to just run into that silly out. But with you,
- 16:15Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think I cut. I can't remember
- 16:17Speaker 3: cutting anything. They were always right on the money, perfect
- 16:20Speaker 3: one hot never overthrew the cutoff man either, which really
- 16:24Speaker 3: speaks to like fundamentally sound baseball. And you know, it
- 16:28Speaker 3: pains me to see these outfielders throw these you know, grenades,
- 16:32Speaker 3: and I'm not saying the angel players, but around the league,
- 16:35Speaker 3: it just like, and that's been as an outfielder that
- 16:38Speaker 3: is in your control, but you were I just wanted
- 16:40Speaker 3: to point that out that you're throwing arm just doesn't
- 16:42Speaker 3: get enough credit because strong and accurate.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I'm probably the one of the last guys that actually
- 16:48Speaker 2: took infield at six fifteen before the game started, you know,
- 16:53Speaker 2: And they kind of took that out of baseball. So
- 16:56Speaker 2: we had to throw with Tom Kelly with the Twins.
- 16:59Speaker 2: If you missed the cut off man, he will take
- 17:01Speaker 2: you off the field in front of all the people
- 17:03Speaker 2: and say, get off the field. You're not ready, right,
- 17:06Speaker 2: So we always had to take the field and it
- 17:08Speaker 2: was a serious thing. And so we have to be
- 17:12Speaker 2: fundamentally sound with the Twins. Kirby Puckett was one of
- 17:15Speaker 2: the guys say, I need you to be accurate. You
- 17:17Speaker 2: got a strong arm, but be more accurate. And my
- 17:19Speaker 2: only way you can be more accurate is one hop
- 17:21Speaker 2: the base. So I learned to throw hard and one
- 17:25Speaker 2: hop the base, which keeps it accurate. So when the
- 17:28Speaker 2: ball bounces, it only bounces a small disbursement and you
- 17:32Speaker 2: can make the player, you know me, trying to throw
- 17:34Speaker 2: the ball all the way to the bass. It's one
- 17:37Speaker 2: hundred and ten percent, which doesn't exist. And actually you're
- 17:40Speaker 2: throwing it. You're off, but your arm looks good. It's
- 17:43Speaker 2: for show, but you're not You're not getting any dope.
- 17:46Speaker 2: You're not getting making any money. So you're not throwing
- 17:48Speaker 2: anybody out because they have to reach up and come
- 17:50Speaker 2: back down. That's too much time for them to be safe.
- 17:53Speaker 2: So one thing I teach when I'm in the outfield
- 17:56Speaker 2: with the guys the last three years with the Angels
- 17:58Speaker 2: is hey, one hop base and not try to throw
- 18:01Speaker 2: the ball all the way. So we're doing that from
- 18:03Speaker 2: the minor leagues all the way to the major leagues.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Be more accurate. You'll be more accurate if you can
- 18:08Speaker 2: just one hop that base with with your strength.
- 18:11Speaker 1: One follow up on Joe Tory. You know he has
- 18:15Speaker 1: struggled a bit moving to center field, and he's a
- 18:19Speaker 1: lot better of for right field. Theer's a guy who's
- 18:20Speaker 1: played both, so well, how would you sort of coach
- 18:23Speaker 1: this guy up right now and when he has to
- 18:25Speaker 1: go up, you know, shift over to center field.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Joe's a big guy. You know, people don't understand. Jon's
- 18:34Speaker 2: about six', three you, know and and he's, jacked and
- 18:38Speaker 2: AND i think he's just a big body. Kid center
- 18:42Speaker 2: field is a place where if you need to Give
- 18:45Speaker 2: trout a, rest you can put him in center. Field
- 18:47Speaker 2: he can hold it. DOWN i don't think he's a
- 18:49Speaker 2: true center, fielder BUT i think he can hold it
- 18:51Speaker 2: down right. Phield it just seems like that's a better.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Fit his arm is strong enough to throw guys, Out
- 18:57Speaker 2: he's able to get to the. BALL i think he's
- 18:59Speaker 2: more comfortable on right, field and, uh sometimes where guy's,
- 19:03Speaker 2: comfortable you got to allow him to play over. There
- 19:05Speaker 2: he's not hurting the team playing at right. FIELD i
- 19:08Speaker 2: would even try to stick him in center field for
- 19:10Speaker 2: as a mainstay at.
- 19:11Speaker 1: All, yeah switching gears a little bit you interviewed for
- 19:15Speaker 1: the man managerial job with The angels last. Fall how
- 19:18Speaker 1: do you feel about that, process how it played out
- 19:23Speaker 1: and the outcome and are you still interested in becoming
- 19:25Speaker 1: a major league? Manager?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Uh, WELL i really enjoyed the process the last two
- 19:34Speaker 2: years with With perry AND. Uh we sat down and
- 19:38Speaker 2: we had great. Conversations some of the things that you,
- 19:40Speaker 2: KNOW i would, do some of the THINGS i wouldn't,
- 19:42Speaker 2: change some of the PEOPLE i would, change some of
- 19:45Speaker 2: the GUYS i would, keep you. Know AND i gave
- 19:47Speaker 2: my my honest opinion and uh and and we we
- 19:51Speaker 2: we had great. Conversation it's, just you, know it didn't
- 19:54Speaker 2: work out and uh for some. Reason and AND, Uh
- 19:58Speaker 2: i'm not sad about. IT i stayed in The. ORGANS
- 20:00Speaker 2: i love the. Organization it's something THAT i really want to,
- 20:03Speaker 2: do is uh be a part of. It and Uh
- 20:06Speaker 2: and when the opportunity came presented itself to be a,
- 20:09Speaker 2: manager possible, manager you, KNOW i, said you know, what
- 20:13Speaker 2: If i'm gonna do, Anything i'll. MANAGE i don't know
- 20:16Speaker 2: IF i want to coach full, time but IF i
- 20:18Speaker 2: can manage and create the team that THAT i can,
- 20:21Speaker 2: see you, know AND i can see that wins and
- 20:24Speaker 2: give them the fundamentals that they need to go out
- 20:27Speaker 2: perform on a day to day. Basis Like Mark, trumbull
- 20:29Speaker 2: the it's the small, things, uh even in business right,
- 20:33Speaker 2: now it's the small things in the business, service you, Know,
- 20:37Speaker 2: uh the customer experience and all these different, things those
- 20:40Speaker 2: small things that people forget about because they looking at
- 20:44Speaker 2: the big. Thing the you, KNOW i definitely think that's
- 20:47Speaker 2: what keep customers coming. Back in, baseball if you fundamentally,
- 20:51Speaker 2: sound you can field the, ball turn the double, plays
- 20:54Speaker 2: throw the guys, out be more accurate at the, plate
- 20:56Speaker 2: have good two strike, approach battle at the, plate trying
- 21:00Speaker 2: to do less to get. More you do all these little.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Things that's what actually wins game because when you get
- 21:05Speaker 2: to the, playoffs that's what. Matters during the, season if
- 21:09Speaker 2: you're hitting bombs and you're doing all those, things it
- 21:11Speaker 2: doesn't matter because you're gonna face a one to two
- 21:12Speaker 2: and the three. Starter if you don't have if you're
- 21:15Speaker 2: not fundamentally, sound you're not gonna. WIN i don't care
- 21:18Speaker 2: what you. Say SO i think if you teach that
- 21:22Speaker 2: droughout the, SEASON i think that. Works and that's something
- 21:25Speaker 2: THAT i wanted to bring to The, angels bring back
- 21:28Speaker 2: to The, angels BECAUSE i GOT i think we got
- 21:30Speaker 2: to a point four or five years ago where we
- 21:32Speaker 2: had launch angle guys swinging for the. Fence you, know
- 21:36Speaker 2: defense was. Terrible i'm telling you. Now five years AGO
- 21:39Speaker 2: i could not stand watching. It The. Angels, wow now
- 21:44Speaker 2: they actually getting. There they're actually getting. There they turned the.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Corner no one really talks about that stuff. Anymore we talk, About,
- 21:51Speaker 2: hey the small, things play the. Games the. Controllables that's
- 21:55Speaker 2: What kirchuzuki always talks. About the controllable control of the
- 21:59Speaker 2: things that you could control and throw out the other
- 22:01Speaker 2: things that you.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Can you do have a lot of business interest In,
- 22:04Speaker 1: Texas but if another opportunity to interview for manager's job comes,
- 22:09Speaker 1: up you're going to pursue.
- 22:10Speaker 2: IT i don't, KNOW i don't. KNOW i really love
- 22:14Speaker 2: What i'm doing right. Now that opportunity came AND i
- 22:19Speaker 2: took try to take advantage of. It it even came
- 22:21Speaker 2: up with the twins as, well and uh and and
- 22:23Speaker 2: that didn't work out as. Well but AND i understand
- 22:26Speaker 2: that you, know you have a. Catcher catchers they seem
- 22:29Speaker 2: to be more of a manager. Manager But i'm a baseball.
- 22:34Speaker 2: GUY i got a PhD in this. Game trumpbo got
- 22:36Speaker 2: a PhD in this. GAME i know how to play this,
- 22:39Speaker 2: game AND i know THAT i need a short, stop
- 22:41Speaker 2: a second base of the third. BASEMENT i need everybody around.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Me you build a team around. You that's what they.
- 22:46Speaker 2: DO a pitcher, coach a bitch, coach a formal manager
- 22:50Speaker 2: that helped you go through the. Process IF i build
- 22:52Speaker 2: a team around, me doesn't matter what what you throw at,
- 22:55Speaker 2: ME i. GOT i got a great team and a
- 22:57Speaker 2: team THAT i trust uh as as my. Staff so
- 23:02Speaker 2: THAT'S i think a lot of guys can be, managers you.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Know BUT i think it's just a notion that people
- 23:07Speaker 2: think that catchers are. BETTER i don't.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Know, No you're right about. That they got. It it's
- 23:13Speaker 3: like a built in you, know this guy's got you,
- 23:15Speaker 3: know got the got the goods or. Something i've interviewed
- 23:19Speaker 3: for a couple of things, too more on the hitting.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Side but you know it didn't get. Them you don't know,
- 23:24Speaker 3: Why like you, know you come, away who knows what
- 23:28Speaker 3: what somebody is looking? FOR Sodj thanks for the Hot
- 23:31Speaker 3: tomali questions.
- 23:32Speaker 2: There that was? Hot that was so?
- 23:34Speaker 3: Hot, yeah, okay all, right all, RIGHT i gotta.
- 23:41Speaker 2: EVERYTHING i just. Said it was. Great now you're acting
- 23:45Speaker 2: the hot.
- 23:45Speaker 1: QUESTION i always love WHEN i asked you a question
- 23:49Speaker 1: and you say that's a hot.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Is a good?
- 23:52Speaker 3: Question all? Right not so not so? Hot not so?
- 23:57Speaker 3: Hot here we.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Go uh.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Yeah So i'm watching other Day Matt. Chapman he has
- 24:01Speaker 3: some direct words for his first, Baseman Casey. SCHMID i
- 24:05Speaker 3: don't know if you saw it or, not but it's
- 24:07Speaker 3: some pretty direct. Feedback he felt like the play should
- 24:09Speaker 3: have been. Made in, ADDITION i also read a pretty
- 24:12Speaker 3: cool article the other day on The dodgers Where Dave
- 24:14Speaker 3: roberts was talking how important it was to Get Clayton
- 24:18Speaker 3: kershaw's buy in early, on at least as the team.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Leader kershaw being the you, know unequivocal leader of The,
- 24:24Speaker 3: dodgers and if he bought, in the other guys would buy.
- 24:27Speaker 3: In so you've talked About Kirby puckett being a big
- 24:30Speaker 3: mentor to you and, showcasing you, know his, leadership AND
- 24:35Speaker 3: i didn't know, him SO i don't know if you
- 24:37Speaker 3: know WHAT i saw from you, was you, know close
- 24:40Speaker 3: to what he did or. Not but you you were
- 24:42Speaker 3: one of a, kind you, know you're not going to
- 24:44Speaker 3: be able to replicate. That as far as, LEADERSHIP i,
- 24:46Speaker 3: mean hundreds of guys have benefited from having you on their,
- 24:50Speaker 3: team and you, Know i've never seen anybody as good
- 24:53Speaker 3: as it than. You BUT i guess my question is
- 24:57Speaker 3: in this in this current, game the were the analytics
- 25:01Speaker 3: and and a lot of teams going. YOUNGER i, mean
- 25:04Speaker 3: guys are getting big deals that are in DOUBLE a right,
- 25:06Speaker 3: now and it seems to be a. THING i, mean
- 25:10Speaker 3: is leadership as important as it's always been in the.
- 25:13Speaker 3: GAME i think it. IS i see playoff teams they
- 25:16Speaker 3: have a pretty clear leader usually if not more than.
- 25:18Speaker 3: One and what do you what are your thoughts on.
- 25:21Speaker 2: THAT i definitely think that you have to have wisdom
- 25:25Speaker 2: on your. SQUAD i mean every business, model EVERY uh
- 25:29Speaker 2: team that you know about that is one or or
- 25:33Speaker 2: going to the next, level they've always had wisdom amongst.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Them AND, uh AND i think just having a great
- 25:39Speaker 2: you just can't have the wisdom without the talent as.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Well so you got to have some talent with your.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Wisdom so you got to prove that you can go
- 25:46Speaker 2: out there and play every, day AND, uh they got
- 25:48Speaker 2: to watch you fail and see how you, react and
- 25:51Speaker 2: if you can bounce, back and the quicker you bounce,
- 25:53Speaker 2: back it builds up their. Leadership and, uh you, know
- 25:56Speaker 2: most leaders don't say that they're. Leaders they let other
- 25:58Speaker 2: people say that they're. Leaders and and and in this game,
- 26:02Speaker 2: TODAY i think it can't be analyzed and you can't evaluate,
- 26:08Speaker 2: it so they don't that leadership is like the last
- 26:11Speaker 2: quality that they're looking for because of analytics and. Data
- 26:15Speaker 2: that's what they're looking more, at what what you're not
- 26:18Speaker 2: doing and what you can. Do but as far as,
- 26:21Speaker 2: leadership it's like the last quality that they're looking. For
- 26:25Speaker 2: and BUT i think it should be something that You
- 26:27Speaker 2: i'll take character THAT i can teach you all the
- 26:30Speaker 2: fundamentals and teach you the. Game if you in a
- 26:33Speaker 2: professional ram in minor leagues and you come to the major,
- 26:36Speaker 2: league if you've got great character and great leadership, SKILLS
- 26:40Speaker 2: i can teach you how to hit and how to
- 26:42Speaker 2: play the game the right. Way SO i would definitely
- 26:45Speaker 2: take the character or the leadership skills, first and THEN
- 26:49Speaker 2: i can teach you whether it's in business and whether
- 26:51Speaker 2: it's in this. Game BECAUSE i think if you got great,
- 26:56Speaker 2: character that shows that you know you're gonna represent me
- 26:59Speaker 2: off the, field and for The, angels it shows that
- 27:04Speaker 2: you're gonna treat people with love and respect around, you
- 27:07Speaker 2: and you're gonna make people around you. Better and that's
- 27:10Speaker 2: what good leaders. Do they make you better even when
- 27:12Speaker 2: they're going through rough.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Times, tory how is your perspective on the game changed
- 27:18Speaker 1: since you, retired especially watching it now from the front office.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Side oh, Man i'll tell you. What one thing that the,
- 27:27Speaker 2: abs the abs is kind of it's cool because now
- 27:32Speaker 2: they're getting it. Right but the abs, also When i'm
- 27:35Speaker 2: watching it doesn't allow the players to. Swing they're thinking
- 27:39Speaker 2: that they're supposed to be, balls and that's not how
- 27:43Speaker 2: the game should be. Played you should be ready to
- 27:44Speaker 2: hit no matter. What AND i think they're getting more
- 27:47Speaker 2: lax because if it's even an inch off the, plate
- 27:51Speaker 2: they're like tapping their. Head i'm, like you should have
- 27:53Speaker 2: been swinging at. That it's can protect the, plate you,
- 27:57Speaker 2: Know and so it's kind of like it's kind of
- 28:02Speaker 2: like a push and pull good and. Bad you, know
- 28:05Speaker 2: there's a lot of good in. It you, know we
- 28:08Speaker 2: all KNEW Cd butler was, bad but now we really.
- 28:11Speaker 6: See so you get some guys that exposed but at
- 28:21Speaker 6: the same, time it's not about.
- 28:24Speaker 2: That it's really showing those guys. Up i'm be honest with.
- 28:27Speaker 2: YOU i like a lot of the umpires as as. People,
- 28:30Speaker 2: uh but it's really showing those guys up a. Lot and.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Uh but at the same, TIME i think it's heard
- 28:37Speaker 2: the hitter because they're not aggressive. Enough. There there's it's two.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Lacks they if it's, close they're taking pictures down the
- 28:45Speaker 2: middle thinking that they're gonna get a. Walk i've never
- 28:48Speaker 2: seen so many backward backward kds in my life this,
- 28:53Speaker 2: year it seems so to.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Me it seems kind of, awkward to be, Honest AND
- 28:57Speaker 3: i know the umpires are not happy at. All i'm not.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Sure and maybe there was a memo that went out talking,
- 29:02Speaker 3: about you know how they're trying to actually judge these
- 29:06Speaker 3: pitches and some of these you know that are so
- 29:09Speaker 3: borderline their, strikes but they you, know they're they're barely
- 29:13Speaker 3: in the. Box and you, know guys are getting a
- 29:16Speaker 3: lot of flat for either challenging the wrong ones or
- 29:19Speaker 3: not challenging other ones that you, know, confusion and we'll
- 29:24Speaker 3: have to see as it. GOES i think it's brand,
- 29:26Speaker 3: new so you, Know i'm all for, accuracy but with this,
- 29:29Speaker 3: One i'm not seeing it. Yet If i'm being, honest
- 29:32Speaker 3: it doesn't feel like the game THAT i. Knew and nobody,
- 29:36Speaker 3: gives you, know whatever about my opinion of WHAT i
- 29:40Speaker 3: want to, Watch BUT i don't. KNOW i do, thinking
- 29:43Speaker 3: and there's been a lot of storylines about. It if
- 29:45Speaker 3: that's what they're looking, for you got, it all? Right all,
- 29:48Speaker 3: Right my last question for, today but it's it's my personal.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Thing and you were a career two seventy seven. Hitter
- 29:56Speaker 3: over seventeen, years you average twenty one homers eighty two.
- 29:59Speaker 3: RBIs BUT i vividly remember you talking about that you
- 30:03Speaker 3: could count On Tory hunter to hit two, eighty to
- 30:06Speaker 3: hit twenty home runs and drive in eighty eighty. Runs
- 30:10Speaker 3: and If i'm, MISTAKEN i, apologize BUT i feel like
- 30:12Speaker 3: you said, that you, know and that was but you
- 30:15Speaker 3: were saying that that's what you held yourself too every,
- 30:18Speaker 3: year and you were dependable and teams could count on
- 30:22Speaker 3: that at least from, you if not more the batting.
- 30:25Speaker 3: AVERAGE i think that you know you do the best you.
- 30:30Speaker 3: CAN i always wanted to hit to. EIGHTY i never got,
- 30:32Speaker 3: there BUT i wanted to do, it AND i wasn't. Satisfied, Whatever, no, no,
- 30:39Speaker 3: no it's part of the part of the, deal had
- 30:41Speaker 3: the home. Runs BUT i thought it was AND i
- 30:43Speaker 3: still think it's very. Important do you think it's still
- 30:45Speaker 3: important to try and hit for high batting.
- 30:47Speaker 2: AVERAGE i think it's very important to hit for high bat.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Average if you've got a high bat average and you
- 30:53Speaker 2: got runners in scoring, POSITION i want you at the.
- 30:55Speaker 2: PLATE i don't want the guy that swings and whales
- 30:58Speaker 2: at you, know and rarely hits the ball. Consistently IF
- 31:02Speaker 2: i can have A riots at the plate every time
- 31:05Speaker 2: with a running scoring position the NiFe, ENDING i Want
- 31:07Speaker 2: Luisa riots at the plate because he's gonna make contact
- 31:10Speaker 2: and give me a chance to jump up and. Down
- 31:12Speaker 2: and SO i still think that trying to make contact
- 31:16Speaker 2: and trying to get that average up is very. Important
- 31:19Speaker 2: AND i think with the you know that spell in
- 31:22Speaker 2: five years, ago six years, ago where we got into
- 31:24Speaker 2: that launch launch angle and the exit velocity and all
- 31:28Speaker 2: these different, THINGS i think the average suffered a. Lot
- 31:31Speaker 2: but guys are getting paid for. That so if guys
- 31:34Speaker 2: are getting paid for, that and these players see that
- 31:36Speaker 2: they're getting paid for, this but hitting two forty two
- 31:40Speaker 2: thirty with forty home runs and sixty RBIs if they
- 31:45Speaker 2: getting paid for, that why WOULDN'T i try to do?
- 31:47Speaker 2: It SO i can't fault the players on. THAT i
- 31:51Speaker 2: fought the, philosophy AND i think that philosophy is starting
- 31:55Speaker 2: to change and come. BACK i think you saw With
- 31:57Speaker 2: Milwaukee brewers who went out there hit and, run, ran
- 32:01Speaker 2: and they bunted the. Ball they played the game the
- 32:03Speaker 2: right way and end up making themselves a playoff contending.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Team and uh, SO i think you're going to see
- 32:10Speaker 2: a lot of teams change that you saw it in the,
- 32:12Speaker 2: playoffs the way they played the game With Blue jay's
- 32:14Speaker 2: and it was all the little things that actually hurt
- 32:17Speaker 2: them and on both. Sides BUT i definitely think that you,
- 32:22Speaker 2: know when you when you talk about the small things
- 32:25Speaker 2: hidden for average is a thing THAT i will want
- 32:27Speaker 2: it to play opposed to trying to wait for a home.
- 32:30Speaker 2: RUN i want to see. ACTION i want to see,
- 32:33Speaker 2: movement And i'm pretty sure the fans want to see
- 32:35Speaker 2: the same thing as.
- 32:35Speaker 3: WELL a lot of hits on the ground. TOO i
- 32:38Speaker 3: mean it's like the ground ball hit kind of you,
- 32:41Speaker 3: know it's not as popular and, whatever but that's how
- 32:44Speaker 3: you keep your batting average up is getting those ground ball.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Hits you, know you hit them, hard sometimes you don't
- 32:49Speaker 3: hit them. Hard they all, count especially and you Mentioned
- 32:52Speaker 3: joe using the whole. Field there's there's a lot of
- 32:54Speaker 3: hits over there in that, fororehole you. Know but but
- 32:57Speaker 3: it's not going to happen with a swing that's trying
- 32:59Speaker 3: to hit the, fields foul, pole get off if that's your.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Goal so SO i think that that's kind of What
- 33:05Speaker 3: i'm getting. At and you talked about, it you said
- 33:08Speaker 3: it better than, me but it is, IMPORTANT i, think

- 33:13Speaker 3: Watching Stephen. KUAN i like Watching. Arias these guys have
- 33:16Speaker 3: nothing in common with, me but they you, know it's, like,
