Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: We're cracking down on the kids
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we're cracking down on the kids. We're going to
- 0:02Speaker 1: crush the cars. We're going to crush the smartphones, which
- 0:05Speaker 1: all sounds nice and lovely, but it'll come down to enforcement.
- 0:10Speaker 1: For all the time Judith Collins spent in the scrap
- 0:12Speaker 1: metal yards for photo ops, it's not quite the crusher
- 0:16Speaker 1: that those photo ops made her out to be. She wasn't.
- 0:19Speaker 1: And the five years after they passed the law, guess
- 0:22Speaker 1: how many cars they crushed? Three? But that was a
- 0:25Speaker 1: three strike solution. Mark Mitchell, the destroyer is moving us
- 0:29Speaker 1: to a first strike program. So you're gone in sixty
- 0:32Speaker 1: second street race. You just won away of those from
- 0:36Speaker 1: the destruction of your car or potentially your car ending
- 0:39Speaker 1: up on the turner's auction website. If you've tried to
- 0:42Speaker 1: get some sleep in an area where this convoy or
- 0:44Speaker 1: one like at some sabaru at three am in the
- 0:47Speaker 1: morning and there are dozens of them, very annoying, very distracting,
- 0:53Speaker 1: can't sleep. I can see why they're doing this, So
- 0:56Speaker 1: why not double down on the crusher thing? But it's
- 0:59Speaker 1: about enforced, isn't it. And that's the same with the phones.
- 1:04Speaker 1: The phones, the tiktop problem far bigger than the car
- 1:08Speaker 1: one because it affects well most kids. About ninety percent
- 1:11Speaker 1: of kids when they get to high school have a smartphone.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So this is interesting because we moved beyond a members
- 1:18Speaker 1: bill now to a government bill, so a social media
- 1:21Speaker 1: ban of some sort is officially on the agenda. The
- 1:24Speaker 1: problem with enforcement here is obvious. How do you you
- 1:29Speaker 1: know when there are so many workarounds, how do you
- 1:31Speaker 1: make sure they're not going on social media? And the
- 1:34Speaker 1: enforces will not be the police, It will be the parents.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And here is the problem with that. Most parents spend
- 1:41Speaker 1: time on social media, spend more time on social media
- 1:44Speaker 1: than their kids. Nearly half of KIWI teams say that
- 1:48Speaker 1: their parent is at least sometimes distracted by their phone
- 1:52Speaker 1: when they're talking to them. What sort of an example
- 1:56Speaker 1: is being set here? Is it like telling you not
- 1:58Speaker 1: to smoke while you're puffing away on a pack of
- 2:00Speaker 1: Winning Blues on the couch. Enforcement of whatever rules we
- 2:05Speaker 1: pass to manage the impulses of our teenagers will ultimately
- 2:10Speaker 1: be determined by how successful those measures are in being enforced.
- 2:16Speaker 1: For more from early edition with Ryan Bridge, Listen live
- 2:19Speaker 1: to News Talk Set B from five am weekdays, or
