- 0:00Speaker 1: I've made some real big mistakes, but you make the
- 0:04Speaker 1: worst ones. This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home
- 0:08Speaker 1: of the best insight of your youths. Let's get back
- 0:11Speaker 1: to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We have reached a point in the season where our
- 0:24Speaker 2: guy Jeff Schwartz is so depressed over how Oregon is
- 0:28Speaker 2: performing that he's doing it. University of Utah Film Study.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And I'm happy we're here. Jeff Schwartz, NFL veteran, former
- 0:36Speaker 2: Oregon Duck, betting expert, NFL expert, college football expert. He's
- 0:42Speaker 2: an expert on a lot of things. He joins us. Hi, Jeff.
- 0:45Speaker 3: You're taking pleasure in my pain? Is that a word
- 0:48Speaker 3: I just heard?
- 0:49Speaker 2: A little bit. A little bit, yeah. Because, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: it's just part of our friendship.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I did not get a text from Kono. So I'm
- 0:57Speaker 3: glad that I think when it's also, it's weird because
- 1:00Speaker 3: you Washington USC also aren't very good. So like, it's
- 1:05Speaker 3: been a, it's been a fairly like fairly tame, like
- 1:10Speaker 3: response on social media. It's mostly just duck fans tweeting
- 1:12Speaker 3: at me. Cause like, what are Washington fans going to say?
- 1:14Speaker 3: What are USC fans going to say? Like, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 3: I see this thing. It's just, it's the dumbest thing ever. Right.
- 1:20Speaker 3: You know, like, Dan Lanning, you know, his speeches and blah, blah, blah,
- 1:24Speaker 3: his appearances. I'm like, what has Chesney done for 24
- 1:27Speaker 3: hours to do a national TV appearance? Of course, why
- 1:30Speaker 3: would you not? They put out a video today of
- 1:32Speaker 3: Chesney talking before the Oregon game, like a great speech.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Of course you put that stuff after you. When you lose,
- 1:37Speaker 3: you don't. I don't know why this is a controversial thing. Like,
- 1:40Speaker 3: show the Ducks first then when you lose. No one
- 1:43Speaker 3: shows a highlight video when they lose. Who does that?
- 1:48Speaker 3: What are we doing here?
- 1:49Speaker 1: So.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I saw a graphic today that had the 10 highest-paid
- 1:54Speaker 3: coaches in all of college football, and it listed out
- 1:57Speaker 3: their accomplishments, like conference championship, playoff appearance, playoff win, and
- 2:01Speaker 3: national championship. And Dan Lanning is the youngest on that
- 2:05Speaker 3: list by four years. And I'm disappointed with how the
- 2:10Speaker 3: season has gone. It hasn't gone the way that it should,
- 2:12Speaker 3: but I still have a lot of faith in our program.
- 2:15Speaker 3: So it was a bummer. You know, we can't turn
- 2:19Speaker 3: the ball over six times, you know? And with all
- 2:21Speaker 3: that being said, had a chance to tie the game
- 2:23Speaker 3: and go to overtime. We'd probably win in overtime, right? So,
- 2:25Speaker 3: you know, we've spent a lot of time talking about
- 2:28Speaker 3: Oregon over the years, me and you, and what the
- 2:30Speaker 3: Oregon's done, and we've talked about this often, is they
- 2:32Speaker 3: win a lot of the margins, you know? And they
- 2:35Speaker 3: haven't done it at all this year. Just like zero
- 2:37Speaker 3: of the margins have been won. You know, fourth down's
- 2:39Speaker 3: terrible this year. Two-point conversion attempts were terrible this year.
- 2:42Speaker 3: You know, I mean, it's a bad year. It stinks.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I haven't felt this way in October and a season forever.
- 2:49Speaker 3: But I will say this, give me 12 playoff teams
- 2:52Speaker 3: right now. You know, like, so a lot of football left.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I was talking with someone about this today. I mean,
- 2:58Speaker 3: the big 12 could have two playoff teams. If Utah
- 3:00Speaker 3: plays Texas tech and they're both 12 in the, in
- 3:03Speaker 3: the big 10 championship game, they're both going to play
- 3:05Speaker 3: off the way things are breaking right now.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So right now I just looked at this during the break.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Utah's got, according to some metric, they've got a 51%
- 3:14Speaker 2: chance to make the college football playoff. And look, we're
- 3:18Speaker 2: the home of the youths. I love seeing something like that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: There's a lot to talk about with this team. There's
- 3:23Speaker 2: a lot to talk about with this roster. We talked
- 3:27Speaker 2: about this before week one even happened. Until you get
- 3:31Speaker 2: to the Houston game, you will not have played anybody.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And that is still the truth. I mean, Utah is
- 3:36Speaker 2: showing us who they are. They're a team that is
- 3:38Speaker 2: capable of winning and covering against inferior competition. And I
- 3:42Speaker 2: think they're going to mollywop Colorado this week. And then
- 3:45Speaker 2: we're going to see what happens against Houston. And when
- 3:48Speaker 2: they win that game, if they win that game, then
- 3:51Speaker 2: I'll start to pay a little bit more attention to
- 3:53Speaker 2: some of these lofty expectations. But everyone in sports should
- 3:58Speaker 2: have learned this lesson many times over that Oregon might
- 4:02Speaker 2: be better at the end of the year than they
- 4:03Speaker 2: are now. Utah might be better at the end of
- 4:05Speaker 2: the year than they are now. They might not. And
- 4:07Speaker 2: we just have to let it play.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely. But you're allowed as a fan to get
- 4:11Speaker 3: a little ahead of yourself, I think, right? Like Utah
- 4:13Speaker 3: to me has looked better than I thought they would. And,
- 4:15Speaker 3: you know, I was watching the film for the Joe
- 4:19Speaker 3: Moore Award. That's why I was, you know, I was
- 4:21Speaker 3: looking at Utah to see, you know, we're putting on
- 4:23Speaker 3: a mid-season honor roll, come out pretty soon. And so
- 4:26Speaker 3: I was looking, you know, doing my checks and whatnot.
- 4:28Speaker 3: And I've watched a Utah film last couple of weeks
- 4:30Speaker 3: just to, you guys are scoring a lot of points, right?
- 4:32Speaker 3: You tend to look at teams that score a lot
- 4:34Speaker 3: of points. Like what are the reasons why? And some
- 4:37Speaker 3: of the stuff you guys do on offense, buddy, I
- 4:39Speaker 3: don't even know how to explain it. I don't even
- 4:42Speaker 3: know what they call it in the huddle. I want
- 4:44Speaker 3: to know what they call it in the huddle.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Well, we have Kevin McGiven on. We'll record the interview
- 4:49Speaker 2: with him this week. We'll record it tomorrow. And, like,
- 4:52Speaker 2: the play that you put on your Twitter where they
- 4:54Speaker 2: have two quarterbacks who start the play or start the
- 4:59Speaker 2: formation lined up out as wide receivers, and then they
- 5:01Speaker 2: motion together back into the backfield. So you've got two quarterbacks,
- 5:05Speaker 2: two running backs, two tight ends. You've got a little
- 5:08Speaker 2: bit of everything.
- 5:09Speaker 3: No, it was two quarterbacks, two wide receivers, two tight ends.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Right, sorry, two quarterbacks, two wide receivers, not two running backs. Yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 2: so you've got these insane sort of combinations, and then
- 5:25Speaker 2: the motions that they run and the blocking schemes that
- 5:29Speaker 2: they run off of those things, especially if one of
- 5:31Speaker 2: those tight ends is Semitao Longo, who's 320 pounds.
- 5:34Speaker 1: It's really crazy.
- 5:37Speaker 2: A novel offense. It's really different. And it's something that,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, I think we're having so much fun watching,
- 5:45Speaker 2: but how much of that can you make your bread
- 5:48Speaker 2: and butter?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Okay. So this is, this is sort of, I'm glad
- 5:52Speaker 3: we talked about this because, you know, I've, I've long
- 5:56Speaker 3: believed that you need to have sort of a, a
- 6:00Speaker 3: base offense and a lot of these fun things you
- 6:04Speaker 3: guys do. aren't going to work as well. Historically, they've
- 6:07Speaker 3: not worked as well against better defenses, right? Because it
- 6:10Speaker 3: is a lot of eye candy. It's a lot of...
- 6:13Speaker 3: Gimmick's the wrong word to use, but there's just a
- 6:15Speaker 3: lot happening on these plays, and better teams just aren't
- 6:18Speaker 3: going to get fooled by it. Then it comes down
- 6:19Speaker 3: to just, are you blocking and tackling? It's not offensively,
- 6:24Speaker 3: but blocking and executing better than the opponent, right? But
- 6:28Speaker 3: some of the stuff, even... There was a play, first
- 6:30Speaker 3: play of the second half, you had a... You were
- 6:34Speaker 3: in empty... You motioned Parker from right to left, and
- 6:39Speaker 3: then it was like a quarterback trap or a run
- 6:43Speaker 3: to left with Parker with a tackle pulling. Like you
- 6:46Speaker 3: two see a G play and then like a trap,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and you read the defensive tackle. Like that stuff is wild, man.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And it works.
- 6:53Speaker 3: It works really well. And so I will see Houston
- 6:57Speaker 3: a couple weeks. I do think you guys just– I
- 6:59Speaker 3: think Colorado is dead, deader than dead. Any concern at
- 7:03Speaker 3: all about the defense, though? Kansas threw the ball. I
- 7:06Speaker 3: know the first half was mostly, I think it was
- 7:09Speaker 3: they scored 70 points off turnovers, right? If we count
- 7:12Speaker 3: fourth down, being stopped on fourth down. So I don't
- 7:14Speaker 3: know if that's a big deal. But second half, they
- 7:15Speaker 3: threw the ball pretty well. They shouldn't score points.
- 7:19Speaker 2: When you've got, there was, in the third quarter, I think, right?
- 7:23Speaker 2: As the fourth quarter was starting, they had, Kansas being day,
- 7:27Speaker 2: had 250 yards on chunk plays and like 49 yards
- 7:29Speaker 2: outside of chunk plays. And I was like, wait, how
- 7:35Speaker 2: am I supposed to feel about that? Because obviously that's
- 7:39Speaker 2: just all offense. You don't want to be giving up
- 7:43Speaker 2: more than one chunk play a game when it's a
- 7:45Speaker 2: dozen of them. That's really alarming and problematic. But also.
- 7:51Speaker 2: And something that I don't think is going to be
- 7:53Speaker 2: the norm, at least I hope is not going to
- 7:55Speaker 2: be the norm, as you're watching it and you're seeing
- 7:57Speaker 2: that on film, are you like, oh, yeah, well, these
- 8:01Speaker 2: guys are not as good at man coverage as Utah
- 8:03Speaker 2: typically is at man coverage, and they're not going to
- 8:05Speaker 2: be able to get away with this anymore?
- 8:07Speaker 3: I don't know. So a couple of things. So obviously
- 8:10Speaker 3: you're right. You'd rather give up less explosive plays than not, right?
- 8:14Speaker 3: I mean, those are a lot of teams get into
- 8:16Speaker 3: games or get back against explosive plays, right? But some
- 8:19Speaker 3: of that just felt like Kansas, this quarterback, just being extra.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And sometimes when you're extra, it's hard. The defense just
- 8:28Speaker 3: sometimes they let their guard down. It's tougher to cover, obviously,
- 8:34Speaker 3: very long into a possession. I don't make much of
- 8:37Speaker 3: it because it hasn't been a problem all season. And again,
- 8:39Speaker 3: 17 of those points came off a turnover, right? I'm
- 8:43Speaker 3: including turnover on downs, right? I think about midfield. Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 3: and then Kansas scored, and then you fumble first, whatever
- 8:51Speaker 3: it was. I mean, Kansas scored 17 first-half points on
- 8:54Speaker 3: essentially three turnovers. So I'm not really worried about it.
- 8:58Speaker 3: In Colorado, their quarterback play is atrocious. They're starting with
- 9:02Speaker 3: Isaac Wilson, they said, who's been bad, like bad, bad,
- 9:04Speaker 3: bad this year. I'm not sure because of the matter
- 9:06Speaker 3: this weekend, but it'll matter. It's Houston. I'm not going
- 9:08Speaker 3: to tell you the better teams on your schedule. Obviously,
- 9:10Speaker 3: BYU is one of them.
- 9:11Speaker 2: So looking at what Utah is, though, right? They are 5-0.
- 9:15Speaker 2: They are.
- 9:17Speaker 2: One of the top-ranked teams in the country. They've won
- 9:20Speaker 2: and covered. They're taking care of business the way that
- 9:23Speaker 2: they're supposed to. They've scored on their opening possession of
- 9:26Speaker 2: every single game. I mean, look, we've spent the last
- 9:29Speaker 2: five weeks nitpicking because that's what we're going to do
- 9:31Speaker 2: when everything's going well. As you prognosticate and you project
- 9:35Speaker 2: it out to Colorado and beyond, do you feel like
- 9:40Speaker 2: this team is going to justify their number 11 rankings?
- 9:44Speaker 3: I think so. Look, it depends. I've not watched them
- 9:47Speaker 3: as closely as you have, obviously. Do you have individual
- 9:50Speaker 3: pass rushers that can win?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm glad we're talking about this because that is...
- 9:56Speaker 2: and it manifested itself against Kansas where the pass rush
- 10:00Speaker 2: was creating pressure and making him move but Ike Marshall
- 10:06Speaker 2: is not going to finish his career at Kansas. He's
- 10:08Speaker 2: too dynamic of an athlete. That guy just extended the
- 10:12Speaker 2: play and then your defensive back in second, number five,
- 10:16Speaker 2: six and seven is eventually going to lose his coverage
- 10:18Speaker 2: and Some of those explosive plays came off that. Their
- 10:22Speaker 2: pass rushers in all of these games have won. They
- 10:26Speaker 2: beat the offensive linemen, or they beat the tight end,
- 10:30Speaker 2: or they beat the chip from the running back. But
- 10:33Speaker 2: then they don't finish the sack. And it drives me
- 10:36Speaker 2: absolutely insane. I could probably cut you like 25 plays,
- 10:40Speaker 2: no exaggeration, that that has been the case. And again,
- 10:43Speaker 2: against Bear Bachmeier and Connor Wegman and Noah Fafita, that
- 10:47Speaker 2: is going to be a lot more problematic.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's exactly right. So the question, obviously, as
- 10:53Speaker 3: I mentioned, you're doing a lot of things well, but
- 10:57Speaker 3: then when you play the big dogs, these are some
- 10:59Speaker 3: of the things you have to do great, right? Like,
- 11:02Speaker 3: can you rush the passer on the third down? Can
- 11:04Speaker 3: you keep the quarterback in the pocket? Can you win
- 11:06Speaker 3: first and second down to make sure third down is
- 11:08Speaker 3: very manageable? So the passers thing is a little bit alarming.
- 11:12Speaker 3: You can't sag. Now, pressures are great. And maybe you're just,
- 11:16Speaker 3: the more reps you convert those into, This weekend, Colorado
- 11:21Speaker 3: should score no more than 10 points on you guys.
- 11:23Speaker 3: That's how Colorado's just not good. That's a benchmark for
- 11:28Speaker 3: this weekend, I feel like. But otherwise, I think you've
- 11:31Speaker 3: got to be pretty excited about where the offense is at,
- 11:33Speaker 3: even where it could get to with more reps. I
- 11:37Speaker 3: just find the two-quarterback thing is so fascinating to me, Matt.
- 11:41Speaker 3: It's just so unique. I'm sure it creates a lot
- 11:45Speaker 3: of problems for for teams you play against to prepare.
- 11:49Speaker 3: How do you prepare for it?
- 11:51Speaker 2: How do you prepare for it? I mean, you don't
- 11:54Speaker 2: know who's going to take the snap, much less what
- 11:56Speaker 2: they're going to do when they get the snap.
- 11:59Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, you know if, you know, one, if essentially,
- 12:03Speaker 3: you know, Ficklin gets it, he's throwing left, right? Like,
- 12:06Speaker 3: and Dan Pierce throwing right, but you don't know if
- 12:07Speaker 3: they're getting the ball, you know what I mean? Like,
- 12:10Speaker 3: you don't know what's going to happen on a given play.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It just, it seems like it's just very difficult to
- 12:15Speaker 3: figure out, and that's obviously the point of all this,
- 12:17Speaker 3: but Again, we'll see how it works against Houston and
- 12:21Speaker 3: BYU and some of the better teams you're going to play.
- 12:22Speaker 3: It'll work. You're going to do Colorado, Northwestern, dominate them
- 12:27Speaker 3: with just game plan, play action, pass and run plays.
- 12:30Speaker 3: You guys should dominate Colorado. Even if Colorado's off a bye,
- 12:32Speaker 3: it doesn't matter to me.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Plus, they're going to leave a playbook around so you
- 12:37Speaker 2: get to see what's.
- 12:38Speaker 3: In the playbook. It does not button up. I think, too,
- 12:41Speaker 3: one thing about Utah that's been impressive so far is again,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I'm not watching every game, so you could be wrong
- 12:47Speaker 3: on this, but It does feel like there's not a
- 12:49Speaker 3: lot of first-time coach in-game mistakes. Oh, man.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I think that that has been one of the most
- 12:55Speaker 2: impressive things about it because, again, it's five new starting
- 12:59Speaker 2: offensive linemen with a new offensive line coach. And there's
- 13:05Speaker 2: not a lot of procedural penalties. There's not false starts.
- 13:08Speaker 2: There's not even a bunch of holding. I mean, they're
- 13:10Speaker 2: just not heavily penalized. And that was a group that
- 13:12Speaker 2: we were looking at saying, like, all right, there's going
- 13:15Speaker 2: to be growing pains here. New coordinator on offense, new
- 13:17Speaker 2: coordinator on defense. And in both cases, you're looking at
- 13:21Speaker 2: pretty clean play. And that is something that, to me,
- 13:25Speaker 2: is not overly influenced by the quality of your opponents, right?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Your self-inflicted wounds. It doesn't really matter who's across from you.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And Morgan Scali just runs a nice, tight ship.
- 13:36Speaker 3: The offensive line, as I mentioned, I watched for Joe
- 13:38Speaker 3: Moore Ward consideration. And, you know, they sort of embody...
- 13:44Speaker 3: what I saw from Jordan Gross, the player, right? They're
- 13:47Speaker 3: real technically sound. I don't know if you noticed, they're
- 13:50Speaker 3: pretty scrappy as well. They're a little undersized, right? A
- 13:55Speaker 3: little bit, I think, still. You know, they're not putting
- 13:59Speaker 3: guys in the dirt as much as you would like, probably,
- 14:00Speaker 3: because I think they're a little smaller, right? They're not
- 14:04Speaker 3: as thick, right, as you would, I think, like. But again,
- 14:06Speaker 3: they're all five new starting guys. But a couple of things, like,
- 14:09Speaker 3: their technique is really good. Like, you could tell they're
- 14:11Speaker 3: very well coached. And then they don't have a lot
- 14:13Speaker 3: of mental mistakes. eyes are where they're supposed to be.
- 14:16Speaker 3: They're not missing blocks. They're not falling off blocks. It
- 14:19Speaker 3: looks like a very well-coached group. I'm not surprised given
- 14:22Speaker 3: DeJuan is their coach, but to have five new guys
- 14:26Speaker 3: and not have any of the issues that Oregon's having
- 14:29Speaker 3: right now, Oregon's the worst offensive line in, I couldn't
- 14:32Speaker 3: tell you, Sean. They're playing really bad right now. Not
- 14:36Speaker 3: any of those concerns at Utah is really good. Credit
- 14:39Speaker 3: to the coaching staff.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Are you at all surprised that college game day decided
- 14:45Speaker 2: to come to Provo this week when Ohio state and
- 14:48Speaker 2: Indiana are playing also.
- 14:50Speaker 3: No, cause that's a Fox game.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Oh, that's right.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Not, not that game that cares, but that's, that's probably
- 14:56Speaker 3: why that the Provo, the BYU game is on in
- 14:59Speaker 3: ESPN network. So Disney ABC network. So I'm not watching
- 15:03Speaker 3: a BYU. I couldn't tell you much about BYU. Um,
- 15:06Speaker 3: I don't know. Irish are really good. They're just fricking
- 15:09Speaker 3: rolling along right now. Um, Very curious to see if
- 15:13Speaker 3: a step-up competition for the Irish here will change how
- 15:17Speaker 3: they've been playing.
- 15:18Speaker 2: BYU's good. They're really good. Without two of their best
- 15:22Speaker 2: five players, they still beat Iowa State, who I know
- 15:26Speaker 2: is not particularly great, but held their best players to
- 15:30Speaker 2: well below season averages in every category that mattered. I
- 15:34Speaker 2: think BYU's pretty good. The spread makes sense to me.
- 15:38Speaker 2: It's a 10.5-point game right now.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that's about right.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Utah fans keep getting mad at me because I'm like,
- 15:44Speaker 2: it's actually in Utah's best interest if BYU beats Notre
- 15:48Speaker 2: Dame and then Utah beats BYU. But people don't want
- 15:51Speaker 2: to root for BYU, of course. Why would you? It's
- 15:54Speaker 2: not about conference pride either. It's not about, well, do
- 15:56Speaker 2: what's best for the Big 12. It's about beating a top,
- 16:00Speaker 2: potentially beating a top five team instead of beating a
- 16:02Speaker 2: top 11 team. Like if BYU loses to Notre Dame,
- 16:06Speaker 2: I don't think they'll get punished heavily for it, but
- 16:09Speaker 2: it would be a bigger win if you smashed your
- 16:11Speaker 2: rival or you beat your rival that thought that they
- 16:13Speaker 2: were headed to the college football playoff after beating a
- 16:16Speaker 2: nationally relevant power.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I understand that. But also, I want Washington to
- 16:22Speaker 3: lose every game. It's fair, yeah. I understand that idea,
- 16:27Speaker 3: what you said. But again, I'm okay if Washington loses
- 16:30Speaker 3: as many games as possible. So it is interesting that
- 16:32Speaker 3: Pacific Northwest, like Oregon State might be the best team.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I don't think they would beat Oregon in a game.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I know Oregon State fans have this like, this fantasy world,
- 16:39Speaker 3: they're going to be Oregon or Washington. But, like, Oregon
- 16:41Speaker 3: State's played some really good football, man.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah, where's that Jesse Legree kid going to be next year?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Texas.
- 16:49Speaker 2: He's so good.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Isn't it terrible that we have to talk about it
- 16:51Speaker 3: like this?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it is pretty terrible.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Like, Oregon State can't enjoy their quarterback and wide receiver
- 16:57Speaker 3: for more than a year because they'll be offered $ 3
- 17:00Speaker 3: million to go play Texas. I mean, heck, Oregon could
- 17:03Speaker 3: probably use him. I mean, I don't know if they're
- 17:05Speaker 3: going to do that. But, like, this kid... I think
- 17:09Speaker 3: I wrote this week, 38 catches for 900 yards at
- 17:14Speaker 3: Oregon State through six games and 12 touchdowns.
- 17:19Speaker 2: It's a really good season for most people.
- 17:21Speaker 3: And it's 5-11? Yeah. Now, again, it's Colorado State, San
- 17:26Speaker 3: Diego State. They get Boise in two weeks. We'll see
- 17:29Speaker 3: what that looks like. It'll get a better team, but
- 17:33Speaker 3: your job is, if you're good, you should beat bad teams, right?
- 17:36Speaker 3: And play well against bad teams. And that's what they're doing.
- 17:38Speaker 3: They're playing really well against these teams. We'll get a
- 17:40Speaker 3: new sense of that. And now the question for Beaver fans, again,
- 17:43Speaker 3: this really stinks, is like, is their coach there next year?
- 17:46Speaker 3: Does Washington call him? He just came from Washington. Or
- 17:48Speaker 3: came from Bama. Is he getting calls to go somewhere else?
- 17:53Speaker 3: Jake Dickard, who we covered in the Pac-12, is he
- 17:56Speaker 3: getting calls to go leave Wake after this? Wake's having
- 17:59Speaker 3: a great season.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look, this is something that BYU fans
- 18:03Speaker 2: get mad at me for because you had that controversy
- 18:06Speaker 2: in the offseason. Kalani Satake and the athletic director didn't
- 18:09Speaker 2: get along. Penn State almost got him to come to
- 18:12Speaker 2: Happy Valley. And now, you know, there's teams on the
- 18:15Speaker 2: West Coast where he's got more intuitive connections that are
- 18:19Speaker 2: going to be looking for head coaches and potentially even
- 18:21Speaker 2: bigger jobs still to open. So, yeah, it's just part
- 18:23Speaker 2: of college football now that there's this spirit of predatory
- 18:27Speaker 2: competition anytime– You don't have what you want at a
- 18:31Speaker 2: big school with a lot of money. You can just
- 18:33Speaker 2: go steal it from somebody else.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I know. It stinks.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Unless you're Florida State, apparently, because they're like a half
- 18:40Speaker 2: a billion dollars in debt and can't pay the buyout.
- 18:43Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Well, the thing about that, it's like bad debt, too.
- 18:48Speaker 3: It's facility debt. You're not making the money on the
- 18:52Speaker 3: facilities to pay off the debt. They can't take a
- 18:56Speaker 3: loan out against. They have no more leverage to take
- 18:58Speaker 3: out more loans. Because they basically are against the property
- 19:01Speaker 3: they're never going to sell. They don't make enough money
- 19:03Speaker 3: off the property, right? I mean, the bank gets the
- 19:05Speaker 3: money back when they sell the property eventually, right?
- 19:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:07Speaker 3: That's, I guess, technically how it'll work. And you're not
- 19:10Speaker 3: making enough money off the property so that the bank
- 19:12Speaker 3: is like, nah, you're not getting a loan anymore. It's crazy.
- 19:14Speaker 3: That's a lot. To be in debt that much money
- 19:16Speaker 3: is a lot of money, dude.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Seems unfathomable, if we're being honest.
- 19:23Speaker 3: But this is not to turn into a financial show,
- 19:25Speaker 3: but the thing about debt, though, too, is that, like,
- 19:28Speaker 3: If the bank's never going to call them on their debt,
- 19:30Speaker 3: who cares?
- 19:32Speaker 2: Well, you care if it means that you're… You.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Can't find a valve. I'm talking about just like conventionally. Oh,
- 19:40Speaker 3: my God, that's a lot of debt. It is, but
- 19:42Speaker 3: if the bank doesn't call you on it, then who cares?
- 19:45Speaker 3: It doesn't matter because ….
- 19:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but this is the scenario in which you do care.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure … every university and every major
- 19:52Speaker 2: institution can just bury a lot of things, like bury
- 19:55Speaker 2: debt and not worry about anyone ever coming to collect.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I mean, we're in the United States. It's our entire country, right? However,
- 20:02Speaker 2: when it means, oh wait, we can't make a move
- 20:05Speaker 2: to improve our football team.
- 20:07Speaker 3: That's a problem, yeah.
- 20:07Speaker 2: That's a big problem.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I agree. No, that I agree with.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Are we ready to crown the San Francisco 49ers as
- 20:14Speaker 2: the eventual Super Bowl champs?
- 20:15Speaker 3: I don't know how you keep doing all those injuries.
- 20:18Speaker 3: It makes no sense. I thought Cooper Cup was easily
- 20:21Speaker 3: out of bounds. I don't get the fury over that call.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Neither do I.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I thought he was very clearly like the ball was
- 20:29Speaker 3: out of bounds before he got the first down. I
- 20:31Speaker 3: don't think it was that controversial. People are very angry
- 20:34Speaker 3: when you say this. I'm sure you thought the same thing.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I mean, you're a Niners fan, but like Yeah, I'm
- 20:38Speaker 3: not going to be objective, probably. I don't think he
- 20:40Speaker 3: made it to the first down before the ball crossed
- 20:43Speaker 3: the plane of the out-of-bounds.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Is Josh Allen getting his first overtime win meaningful in
- 20:53Speaker 2: any way besides it being a stat?
- 20:55Speaker 3: So he's the same as DeMarcus Russell now. Good for him. No,
- 21:00Speaker 3: the thing with Josh is it just depends on what
- 21:01Speaker 3: he does in the playoffs. No one cares what he
- 21:04Speaker 3: does now.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yeah, fair.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Are you going to win the playoffs? That's the question
- 21:08Speaker 3: for them. If he's not going to win the playoffs,
- 21:10Speaker 3: none of this matters. That's really what it comes down
- 21:13Speaker 3: to for Josh. We know he's good in the regular season.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Are you good in the playoffs? Yes or no?
- 21:19Speaker 2: Who has impressed you most in the NFL so far,
- 21:21Speaker 2: besides San Francisco?
- 21:26Speaker 3: Jacksonville has played really good football so far this year.
- 21:29Speaker 3: We'll see, obviously, what that looks like. I think they've
- 21:32Speaker 3: got Houston this week. Jacksonville, I guess the teams I
- 21:37Speaker 3: didn't expect to be good, Jacksonville was certainly one of them.
- 21:41Speaker 3: The Giants have played, you know, the 3-1-1. They played
- 21:44Speaker 3: better than I thought, even with Jameis. I think they've
- 21:46Speaker 3: been better than I thought they would be this year.
- 21:48Speaker 3: A lot of teams I thought that would be bad, though,
- 21:52Speaker 3: were really bad. And I was right about Bo Nix, too.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So Sean Payton, I'm sure he's on Twitter, you know,
- 21:57Speaker 3: going to respond to me and say, you know what, Schwartz,
- 21:59Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 21:59Speaker 2: You were right.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I apologize. Sorry. I'm sorry. I'll take it back. But
- 22:07Speaker 3: I don't think that's going to happen, unfortunately.
- 22:11Speaker 2: How is it handled in the NFL when you procedurally
- 22:14Speaker 2: fail to get a potential game winner off in a
- 22:18Speaker 2: field goal situation?
- 22:20Speaker 3: For the commanders?
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yes.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you're freaking furious at your coaching staff and your
- 22:25Speaker 3: quarterback for that. But you're a professional, and so you
- 22:27Speaker 3: have to continue doing your job. This week, you can't
- 22:30Speaker 3: just go in the tank over this. But I had
- 22:33Speaker 3: a situation like this with the Giants where we had a,
- 22:37Speaker 3: a thing where someone told us to do something that
- 22:39Speaker 3: was just like the wrong thing to do. And we
- 22:41Speaker 3: lost the game and I threw my helmet in the
- 22:43Speaker 3: locker room and just like, just furious, man. But you know,
- 22:46Speaker 3: your job, you come back next week, you play football, man.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Like that's your job. So, but this is a problem
- 22:52Speaker 3: with this is that Dan Quinn's, sorry, another nail in
- 22:54Speaker 3: the coffin for Dan Quinn, like just not a good
- 22:57Speaker 3: coach with Washington and he's probably gonna lose his job.
- 23:00Speaker 3: And also this is a trickle down effect for Campbell.
- 23:03Speaker 3: I also, you know, Jaden, buddy, Do you want to
- 23:08Speaker 3: know the situation?
- 23:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah. When your quarterback is supposed to be like
- 23:15Speaker 2: an extension of the coaching staff, how much blame goes
- 23:17Speaker 2: to him?
- 23:18Speaker 3: A lot. So he claims the coaches didn't tell him
- 23:22Speaker 3: he needed to get down, you know, throw the ball
- 23:25Speaker 3: out of bounds in his headset, which is, I would
- 23:28Speaker 3: just say, I wouldn't, you know, other quarterbacks wouldn't throw
- 23:31Speaker 3: their coaches under the bus like that, first of all, right? So, like,
- 23:34Speaker 3: You know, the Holmes would never do that. Josh Allen
- 23:35Speaker 3: would never do that. They wouldn't do that. They just wouldn't.
- 23:38Speaker 3: That's beside the point, though. Like, you have to know
- 23:43Speaker 3: what the situation is. You had no timeouts, which you knew,
- 23:45Speaker 3: and you had 20 seconds left, and, like, you have
- 23:48Speaker 3: to know, just throw the ball out of bounds, throw
- 23:52Speaker 3: the ball somewhere, the clock's got to stop. And the
- 23:55Speaker 3: clock just didn't stop, and it was something that I
- 23:57Speaker 3: thought was just really something that they couldn't have done.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Do the Schwartz kids already have their Halloween costumes picked out?
- 24:06Speaker 3: Let me just walk to my office upset with Alex.
- 24:09Speaker 3: What's your Halloween costume? Doesn't know yet.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Figure it out.
- 24:13Speaker 3: What's the problem with your brother?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Okay. Do you hear what she said?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I ate those two shoes. Tell him to give you
- 24:27Speaker 3: one more.
- 24:27Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 24:29Speaker 3: I ate one of those sushis. I was hungry. I
- 24:31Speaker 3: bought two things of sushi.
- 24:33Speaker 2: You've caused a problem between your children because of your
- 24:36Speaker 2: sushi gluttony.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Yes, and so they're now going to... Everything's got to
- 24:42Speaker 3: be 50-50. You can't do that with your house. I
- 24:45Speaker 3: don't know how you're going to do that in your house.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Just slice everything into thirds?
- 24:50Speaker 3: Just thirds. We have 18 pieces. You just get six.
- 24:53Speaker 3: It's good. Go to thirds.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I'm just going to have to have a fourth kid
- 25:01Speaker 2: so I can make it quarters and much easier.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I mean, a fourth kid requires a couple things. So
- 25:07Speaker 3: we're stuck at two. Do you want to explain it?
- 25:10Speaker 3: I'm not on this network. I think other places maybe.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Family show.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Uh, that's why we're, we're at two. We're never, we can't,
- 25:18Speaker 3: just can't go to three. So, um, but you know, I,
- 25:21Speaker 3: Meredith looked into the third kid like two years after
- 25:23Speaker 3: Emmy and just didn't tell me. And the doctor was like,
- 25:25Speaker 3: you can't do this. So she did. She, she's like, looked,
- 25:29Speaker 3: she went to the back of the clinic, decided not
- 25:31Speaker 3: to involve you. Yeah. Emmy was, uh, Emmy was IVF.
- 25:34Speaker 3: And so she went to the doctor and the doctor
- 25:37Speaker 3: was like, yeah, you had kidney failure last time. She goes,
- 25:39Speaker 3: I had what? And he's like, yeah, we can't have
- 25:41Speaker 3: any more kids. So we went ahead a third. I'm
- 25:44Speaker 3: glad we did. I'm fine with two. you know, one
- 25:47Speaker 3: of each.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Well, good luck with the baseball and the softball. And
- 25:50Speaker 2: thanks for tonight.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Thunderbats, six and one, six and one bats.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Go Thunderbats. Thanks for joining me, bud.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Take care, buddy. Have a good week.
- 25:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 25:57Speaker 2: That's Jeff Schwartz, college football, NFL gambling insider.
