- 0:26Speaker 1: I am Tom Davis. Welcome aboard, and my goodness, golic
- 0:30Speaker 1: sun is shining.
- 0:31Speaker 2: He it must mean it's Thursday.
- 0:33Speaker 1: How you doing there?
- 0:35Speaker 2: You wow? And friends, thank you for joining us this morning.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I brought a bunch of props today. I've got got
- 0:41Speaker 2: John Panel here from the morning. Just Toyota Indians gotta
- 0:46Speaker 2: used to saying that the seniors baseball team here since
- 0:51Speaker 2: nineteen forty one. Yes, pretty amazing legacy we've got here,
- 0:58Speaker 2: don't you? Thank John?
- 0:59Speaker 3: It isn't and it's you know, even crazier to think that.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I mean, that's what eighty I can't do the matter
- 1:06Speaker 3: eighty forty years. But then it's ninety years this year
- 1:09Speaker 3: of American League baseball here in Bartlesville. Yeah, so we're
- 1:13Speaker 3: excited to get going. We had tryouts last Saturday and
- 1:15Speaker 3: our first practice last night, and there's going to be
- 1:18Speaker 3: some exciting things to come.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It's a great time of year and as we head
- 1:23Speaker 2: into summer and Memorial Day, it's a big weekend. This weekend,
- 1:27Speaker 2: we've got a bunch of sales at the dealership and
- 1:30Speaker 2: great great deals on new Toyota's and our used cars,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and everybody's planning a busy summer, but we don't want
- 1:37Speaker 2: to forget about baseball. You've got your schedule lined out
- 1:40Speaker 2: and their team is practicing and getting ready to start.
- 1:43Speaker 2: So tell folks about the schedule. Let's just start there,
- 1:46Speaker 2: and when does when do things kick off? And what
- 1:49Speaker 2: do we have on store for this year?
- 1:51Speaker 3: We're all set. We don't last any time. In May
- 1:53Speaker 3: twenty seventh, we'll we'll hit the roads for a nine
- 1:56Speaker 3: any game in which toile against a team called the
- 1:59Speaker 3: Kansas Curve. They're out of the College of the Kansas
- 2:02Speaker 3: Collegian League. And then on the thirtieth fact Kansas Curve
- 2:06Speaker 3: team will come over here to Bartlesville for doubleheader.
- 2:10Speaker 2: That that evening.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I think we start at four four pm on that
- 2:15Speaker 3: Then we do play in the d BAT League now,
- 2:18Speaker 3: which is a college league, so the majority of our
- 2:21Speaker 3: games are Dungeons Stadium.
- 2:23Speaker 2: But we will travel to Stroud and meet.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Teams from Oklahoma City halfway play at Rogers State University,
- 2:30Speaker 3: so we'll get some guys in front of some college
- 2:33Speaker 3: scouts there.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You got a number of home games throughout the year,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and we do.
- 2:38Speaker 3: We do in the first two weeks in June, we
- 2:41Speaker 3: hit the road two tournaments, but then we'll be home
- 2:44Speaker 3: for a majority of the rest of the summer in
- 2:47Speaker 3: June through July. The wind it so it looks to
- 2:51Speaker 3: be a good summer.
- 2:52Speaker 2: You know, we'll have the fireworks show again.
- 2:55Speaker 3: It's a great time to bring the family out, good atmosphere,
- 2:59Speaker 3: kids can p get a hot dog.
- 3:02Speaker 2: It's a great time down at the stadium. It always is.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And you know, if people haven't been down to the
- 3:07Speaker 2: to the stadium, they really need to come out down
- 3:09Speaker 2: and check out the baseball. It's great, great league you're in.
- 3:13Speaker 2: You know, there's these young men in mature and start
- 3:17Speaker 2: to look for their college careers, and many of them
- 3:21Speaker 2: are in their first year of college and finishing it up.
- 3:25Speaker 2: You know, tell us about the team you've got this
- 3:28Speaker 2: year and where they come from and their background a
- 3:30Speaker 2: little bit.
- 3:31Speaker 3: You've been I mean, our guys are we are fifteen
- 3:33Speaker 3: to nineteen. You know, the youngest guy ever took was
- 3:36Speaker 3: fourteen years old, and that's that's Brendan Asher, who's now
- 3:40Speaker 3: you know, starting pitch for l Roberts University, and he's
- 3:44Speaker 3: still eighteen years old, so you know, to watch his
- 3:47Speaker 3: maturity and go up, it is just an amazing thing.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I'ts go through the list of guys. So Jackson's one
- 3:53Speaker 3: from Bartlesville. Brett Eases from Bartlesville. Cale Seemers is a
- 3:57Speaker 3: Barnsville guy. Brendan Asher huntershe Leam Clark, Grant Clark, he's
- 4:02Speaker 3: a College of the Ozarks a picture but coming back.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Owen Dumb he's a younger one at Bartlesville. Sam Marcella
- 4:08Speaker 3: Eli Winters is from Blinpool. His brother also helped us coach.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Ben Spilman is from Kanie, Kansas, played high school ball
- 4:18Speaker 3: up there. Bryce Slough is a Bartlesville guy. Uh so
- 4:22Speaker 3: we keep it like with them traditions. So his uncle
- 4:25Speaker 3: is Matt Sedorris who used to United Lennon here and
- 4:28Speaker 3: then used to coach. So Matt and I go way back,
- 4:31Speaker 3: and so it's exciting to have guys like Bryce.
- 4:33Speaker 2: We have a lot of multi generational players through the
- 4:35Speaker 2: years and oh yeah, oh yeah families and they have
- 4:38Speaker 2: been involved in in a number of ways.
- 4:41Speaker 3: So we got another Pascal kid, Kaden Williams. So we're
- 4:43Speaker 3: excited about him as a young a young and Zane
- 4:46Speaker 3: Strickland from Copain, Bryce Stickler from Dewey, Tucker Wootin from Worcester, Oklahoma.
- 4:52Speaker 3: He was a freshman of Carl Albert and and I
- 4:54Speaker 3: played he his father and I played together at Southeastern
- 4:58Speaker 3: Oklahoma State, So there's that connection there. Adrian O'Dell's from
- 5:02Speaker 3: No Water. Leith Griggs and Zane Griggs, so we have brothers.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Zane is the older one.
- 5:09Speaker 3: He's in college already late is going to be a senior,
- 5:12Speaker 3: I believe it. Dewey, but exciting. Good things to come
- 5:15Speaker 3: from those guys. And then lastly, but definitely not least
- 5:19Speaker 3: Pitcher Justin Schwart. We just graduated from Barbsville. So we're excited.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Even down to the coaching staff.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it take the coaches and and a lot of
- 5:29Speaker 2: times the parents and all the family to help pull
- 5:32Speaker 2: all this off through the season.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so it's fun with all the coach I
- 5:36Speaker 3: think we have six coaches, five of them played for me.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It's so it's bad when you have one of your
- 5:42Speaker 3: old coach your coaches called an old coach who played
- 5:45Speaker 3: for me. But he's even got gray hair too.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:48Speaker 3: So that's like, oh my god, I am feeling really old.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Well and something that's been going on since nineteen forty
- 5:53Speaker 2: one that happened brought, you know, just to show it
- 5:59Speaker 2: for people who want. And this is our Guinness World's
- 6:02Speaker 2: Record certificate. It's the record for the longest corporate sponsor
- 6:08Speaker 2: of a sports team at this time. It was sixty
- 6:12Speaker 2: six years. Was achieved by dungeus Ford sponsoring American Legion
- 6:16Speaker 2: Baseball at the time since nineteen forty one in Bartsville, Oklahoma, USA.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And I approved by the Guinness World Records And yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 2: it's you know, things change over time, or not really
- 6:27Speaker 2: playing American Legion exactly anymore.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I think we are actually back playing that BIBAT is
- 6:34Speaker 3: not an American league. We're kind of a hybrid. Okay, so
- 6:38Speaker 3: we are officially registered in the state of Oklahoma's American
- 6:41Speaker 3: Legion team. So we will play in the Oak or
- 6:44Speaker 3: the American Legion playoffs.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Okay, so you playing the same advance into the same
- 6:49Speaker 2: tournament round for the playoffs, and we end up in
- 6:51Speaker 2: the stand usual I think they call it.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Right, Yes, yes, yes, yes, So we have a couple
- 6:56Speaker 3: of different things we play in and it's just.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Baseball has evolved and and you.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Know, baseball has evolved greatly here. It's the number of
- 7:06Speaker 3: you call them prospect teams or travel teams that's that's
- 7:09Speaker 3: come up. The hometown teams, you know, us going down
- 7:11Speaker 3: to Claremore for UH Thursday night game at seven o'clock,
- 7:16Speaker 3: it's nine innings doesn't exist anymore.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It's sad or going up to Arc City or running
- 7:21Speaker 2: over to Miami with some of those old old competitive
- 7:24Speaker 2: rivalries aren't necessarily yeah, all you know, everybody, almost everybody
- 7:30Speaker 2: and then literally almost everybody is just a tournament team now,
- 7:33Speaker 2: and so they planned the weekends.
- 7:35Speaker 3: We still got a great full schedule throughout the week
- 7:38Speaker 3: and we'll go play tournaments on the weekend and got
- 7:41Speaker 3: some weekends series. So it's it's fun. We'll get over
- 7:45Speaker 3: fifty games and guys will get their money's worth.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I'm sure it's a great thing and it's always fun
- 7:54Speaker 2: every summer. And it's a great value for people that
- 7:57Speaker 2: can get a season pass.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Get a season pass for fifty dollars amidst two adults
- 8:03Speaker 3: on that gets you into any home game no matter
- 8:06Speaker 3: what's going on on the back is UH is a
- 8:11Speaker 3: coupon free onion strings with the purchase of two entrees
- 8:14Speaker 3: from our good buddy Landing Kurd, who is one of
- 8:17Speaker 3: my former players that owns Dinks.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Now you know him and his dad.
- 8:22Speaker 3: May occurred, uh, you know, great friends of the program
- 8:25Speaker 3: and family. So it's you know, the connection dround bars
- 8:29Speaker 3: was a good time.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So yeah, and what else is going on? Any other
- 8:33Speaker 2: big baseball news or anything you want to announce about
- 8:36Speaker 2: the team. I know you've had some changes in how
- 8:39Speaker 2: things operate. Are you are you raising money for anything
- 8:44Speaker 2: in particular? You're dragging it out? You know that we
- 8:49Speaker 2: always we have a platform here John, this is and
- 8:53Speaker 2: I don't Yeah, I think it's important to know that
- 8:56Speaker 2: this takes a big operation. We're glad to sponsor you,
- 8:59Speaker 2: and I hope we can get that match we talked
- 9:01Speaker 2: about from Toyota. That would be great to get them
- 9:04Speaker 2: to support the team too. And yeah, it's but I
- 9:07Speaker 2: know you need additional resources to be able to pull
- 9:09Speaker 2: off what what you do, and we do.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I mean it's you know, we have you know, a
- 9:15Speaker 3: league fee and then this year we do have a
- 9:18Speaker 3: stadium lease feed that we do pay the bars and schools.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It was kind of shocked we have done in the
- 9:24Speaker 3: past because the majority of our team is barsweall guys,
- 9:26Speaker 3: and that's fine, but there is expenses that come. You know,
- 9:30Speaker 3: nobody can tell me, you know about expenses to the stadium.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yea, I understand that. I understand that there is. Yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 2: I mean, into the past, a lot of times with
- 9:41Speaker 2: their parents and everybody else, the coaches would go out
- 9:43Speaker 2: there and do that.
- 9:45Speaker 3: You're right, So we we had so I've reached out
- 9:47Speaker 3: to a couple of players, you know, Curtis Shaw being
- 9:50Speaker 3: being one of them. Of so he suggested, let's let's
- 9:53Speaker 3: set up and go fund me, you know, kind of
- 9:55Speaker 3: send that out to older players. So the league fee,
- 9:59Speaker 3: the fee is fifty five hundred dollars. So we started
- 10:02Speaker 3: to go fund me. It's on our Facebook page. It's
- 10:06Speaker 3: got some good tracks. I think we're over fifteen hundred
- 10:08Speaker 3: dollars now towards that towards that goal.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I want to encourage everybody to support it and come
- 10:14Speaker 2: out and support the team. These guys really work really
- 10:17Speaker 2: hard to get this point in their careers. I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 2: that's the thing that's so incredible. Here they're at the
- 10:23Speaker 2: kind of the pinnacle of their youth baseball career. Many
- 10:27Speaker 2: of them go on to play in college and have
- 10:30Speaker 2: have you know, learned into all those skills. And I
- 10:33Speaker 2: know that's why my time's working on a swing over
- 10:35Speaker 2: my grandfather started, I still got a chance. Yeah no, Tom.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Tom played youth baseball too, And you know that's why
- 10:42Speaker 2: my grandfather started sponsoring the team that first spring when
- 10:46Speaker 2: he came to town. He I'm sure I don't know
- 10:51Speaker 2: exactly what had happened to the sponsor before, but that
- 10:53Speaker 2: opportunity came available. That's April when he first came to town.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And in nineteen forty one, he and my grand mother
- 11:00Speaker 2: came from Tonkawa and I bought the Ford Dealership here
- 11:04Speaker 2: and you know, I've got my pen for seventy five
- 11:08Speaker 2: year Ford Dealer on today on my little pel and
- 11:12Speaker 2: brought the World Series plaque. We also have this cool
- 11:17Speaker 2: you know, why would he sponsor a baseball team? And
- 11:21Speaker 2: this is one of those things I love to tell
- 11:23Speaker 2: this story because this is what we call the Sparks
- 11:26Speaker 2: Fishure and it's a picture of a basketball team from
- 11:29Speaker 2: Tonkawha Ford in nineteen twenty five and it's got three
- 11:33Speaker 2: dungeus men on it. My grandfather and two of his brothers,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and they worked at the dealership. Their father had actually
- 11:41Speaker 2: passed away and they moved from from Blackwell where they
- 11:44Speaker 2: lived and he had my great grandfather was the grand
- 11:46Speaker 2: the Methodist minister there, and he passed away and they
- 11:49Speaker 2: moved to Tonkawha so they could work, and my grand
- 11:53Speaker 2: great grandmother ended up teaching at the college there. And
- 11:56Speaker 2: it's got all the My grandmother wrote all the scores here,
- 12:00Speaker 2: the games they played and who played on it and
- 12:03Speaker 2: all that. But you know, that opportunity he got to
- 12:07Speaker 2: be part of that team, and he went on and
- 12:09Speaker 2: played college sports at Oklahoma City University, was a letterman
- 12:13Speaker 2: in football and basketball and tennis, and on the Browse
- 12:18Speaker 2: Award for their Athlete of the Year, and came back
- 12:21Speaker 2: and ended up being the dealer in talk a Lot
- 12:24Speaker 2: and then moved to Bartlesville in nineteen forty one. So
- 12:27Speaker 2: that that whole idea of sponsoring the team and being
- 12:31Speaker 2: part of that, you know, it's so important in business.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You know that that team mentality and working together to
- 12:38Speaker 2: accomplish a goal that you guys, you know that you
- 12:41Speaker 2: can't play baseball without without all the pieces and without
- 12:46Speaker 2: that that kind of cohesion as a group, or you can,
- 12:49Speaker 2: but you're not going to be very successful. No, no, no,
- 12:52Speaker 2: and that's true.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I mean even to think back to the Dungeon's name
- 12:55Speaker 3: and the legacy that your grandfather built, just it's mind
- 13:02Speaker 3: blowing just the number of kids that it has helped.
- 13:04Speaker 3: You know, some of the kids may come from a
- 13:07Speaker 3: troubled situation that where baseball's their outlets to grow, you know,
- 13:12Speaker 3: where you can get around some good man and some
- 13:14Speaker 3: coaches that that's going to help him.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And learn, learn to win and lose and and go
- 13:20Speaker 2: through the process.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Baseball is a sport, you know that it's it teaches
- 13:23Speaker 3: us adversity because it is a game of failure, you know,
- 13:26Speaker 3: and the greatest hitter of all time failed six out
- 13:30Speaker 3: of ten times. You know, you're gonna get fired from
- 13:32Speaker 3: any other job in the world baseball player. Ted Williams.
- 13:37Speaker 3: You yeah, you he.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Failed six out ten times before successful.
- 13:41Speaker 3: We'll take that in the cart, you know a little
- 13:43Speaker 3: bit about that.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good. That there are many parallels, No that
- 13:49Speaker 2: I think there are. There are a lot, and that
- 13:52Speaker 2: certainly our team at Dungeons is uh, you know, a
- 13:54Speaker 2: belt like that and we look at ourselves as a
- 13:56Speaker 2: team and and proud to help you guys every year.
- 14:00Speaker 2: And really, uh, it's one of those parts of the
- 14:03Speaker 2: legacy that's so important or really cloud to be proud
- 14:06Speaker 2: to continue it. And yeah, the fact that you were
- 14:10Speaker 2: a part of the team you know before and now
- 14:12Speaker 2: I've come back and helped manage it here for an
- 14:14Speaker 2: ear years. Thank you for your for your dedication to
- 14:17Speaker 2: the youth around here in Barcela. Here You're welcome.
- 14:21Speaker 3: You're welcome then, you know, it's even we're thinking like
- 14:24Speaker 3: even being in communication with guys. We have guys in
- 14:26Speaker 3: Alabama right now.
- 14:28Speaker 2: We have a player in Florida.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you know Kansas, Arkansas so well.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And as you mentioned, this has been going on for
- 14:36Speaker 2: a long time, back to the many of the old
- 14:38Speaker 2: managers you know, I know you guys gathered at some
- 14:42Speaker 2: point recently. You told me a lot, you know, we did.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Tud Bond, who who meant a ton to me.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Was a great guy and good customer and friend of
- 14:51Speaker 2: my grandfather's for sure. Yeah.
- 14:52Speaker 3: We were at was with his grandson Jared, and we
- 14:55Speaker 3: went to the journey home and say goodbye and myself
- 15:00Speaker 3: Tug Carbrooks and Stan Walton in one room and that
- 15:06Speaker 3: you know, that goes back to So that was that
- 15:08Speaker 3: was managers and coaches from seventies to today, that much
- 15:14Speaker 3: in generation.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember, I remember those. I mean we would
- 15:19Speaker 2: remember like the van and stuff. They had the Indians
- 15:23Speaker 2: van and we're gonna do that again, brad Well Insurance
- 15:26Speaker 2: made that more difficult. They don't really want to. We
- 15:29Speaker 2: could spawn and put our logo on one and you guys,
- 15:32Speaker 2: you know, but the days of of loaning it, Oh yeah,
- 15:36Speaker 2: I know that gone. Yeah, yeah, that was with the
- 15:39Speaker 2: vans and the way the team traveled then, because travel
- 15:42Speaker 2: was very different back in those days. And the families
- 15:44Speaker 2: would all go together and and uh, you know then
- 15:47Speaker 2: we had the vans and and team parties and things
- 15:50Speaker 2: out at the ranch at times, and and I remember
- 15:55Speaker 2: I was particularly my memories are going with my grandfather
- 15:58Speaker 2: to the games and and you know, going in and
- 16:01Speaker 2: he he kind of had this routine where he wouldn't
- 16:04Speaker 2: stay for the whole game, but he would go to
- 16:06Speaker 2: virtually every game, and he would go in and he'd
- 16:08Speaker 2: talk to the team and the manager real quickly. Then
- 16:10Speaker 2: he'd go up into the stands and sit down for
- 16:13Speaker 2: a minute, and then, as was his way, he would
- 16:15Speaker 2: be restless and move on and keep going.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Now, it's according to Jim Bowle, who was a dear
- 16:19Speaker 3: old friend and played back in the fifties. You know,
- 16:23Speaker 3: he told great stories of your grandfather of like he
- 16:26Speaker 3: would get on and ride.
- 16:27Speaker 2: The bus and that. Oh yeah, well definitely if he
- 16:30Speaker 2: went with the team that was back in the day.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I guess they had a bus man.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I was like, they did, yeah, but it was he said,
- 16:36Speaker 3: he goes. If a player needed cleats, he'd go by him.
- 16:40Speaker 3: The player needed a glove, they would go by him.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 3: He was just a very generous man when it came
- 16:46Speaker 3: to the kids and whatever it took for them to succeed,
- 16:50Speaker 3: he was going to do it.
- 16:51Speaker 2: So that's that's awesome, That's what that is, what it's
- 16:53Speaker 2: all about. And it's yeah, he'd love to love the
- 16:56Speaker 2: team and loved to be a part of that. I
- 16:59Speaker 2: think it was special to him and that so that's
- 17:01Speaker 2: why I started doing it all those long ago. And
- 17:03Speaker 2: the picture of him and his brothers is just a
- 17:06Speaker 2: it's a great testament to that the kinds of opportunities
- 17:09Speaker 2: that can give you and and I know he wanted
- 17:11Speaker 2: to make sure everybody had those, and he and my
- 17:15Speaker 2: grandmother had that.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Nineteen twenty nine was twenty four is this that's twenty
- 17:20Speaker 3: four and so it.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Was in twenty nine nine is when the dealership first started.
- 17:28Speaker 2: So we're in like ninety five ninety six a year
- 17:31Speaker 2: in Tankola and started in Tonqua. The first Done just
- 17:34Speaker 2: that was Solan and my grandfather Bill Done just had
- 17:39Speaker 2: that dealership. So one ended up being a dealer in
- 17:42Speaker 2: Colorado and uh and was also a great guy. And
- 17:47Speaker 2: the other brother was actually a coach in Guthrie and
- 17:50Speaker 2: football coach in high school for many many years for decades.
- 17:53Speaker 2: And then of course my grandfather there and they started
- 17:58Speaker 2: out there in Tonkawa, had another little store and Brahmin
- 18:02Speaker 2: that wasn't particularly successful. I didn't last very long. And
- 18:06Speaker 2: oh the stories are incredible. There's everything from the the
- 18:10Speaker 2: they're in the depression, when the banks closed down my
- 18:13Speaker 2: grand They say, my grandfather went up and tried to
- 18:15Speaker 2: make a deposit at the bank and the teller wouldn't
- 18:18Speaker 2: take the money and somehow kept him from depositing his
- 18:21Speaker 2: cash and ate it and they shut they cloth, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 2: the bank, and he couldn't have withdrawn it the next day,
- 18:27Speaker 2: but he had cash to help keep his business going.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I heard, you know, the stories are he was able
- 18:33Speaker 2: to help the city keep going and other businesses and
- 18:36Speaker 2: things by making loans and things and helping people get
- 18:40Speaker 2: through that period when there was access to money. And
- 18:43Speaker 2: another story was the when a friend, Don mclannon, was
- 18:49Speaker 2: going through Bartlesville in nineteen fifty four. Don mcclannon was
- 18:54Speaker 2: the founder of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and he
- 18:58Speaker 2: was coming into Artlesville and he had a car that
- 19:02Speaker 2: had a thousand dollars loan on it at from a
- 19:05Speaker 2: bank that he'd borrowed. Take him out the loan to
- 19:08Speaker 2: get some money. He'd start to get momentum going for
- 19:12Speaker 2: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. And he had heard about
- 19:15Speaker 2: my grandfather and he and his wife had been praying
- 19:18Speaker 2: about it, and we're planning to ask him for money,
- 19:21Speaker 2: and he ended up giving him twenty two hundred dollars
- 19:24Speaker 2: and he paid off the loan and then he had
- 19:28Speaker 2: some money left and they planned this trip to Pittsburgh
- 19:32Speaker 2: to meet branch Rickey, who had Don had met before
- 19:37Speaker 2: and had kind of inspired him with his vision of
- 19:40Speaker 2: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and so the idea was
- 19:43Speaker 2: to get some athletes up there to Pittsburgh and raise
- 19:46Speaker 2: some money and start this organization really getting going. And
- 19:52Speaker 2: so they did. My grandfather went with Don and some
- 19:56Speaker 2: athletes from the state of Oklahoma to to this to
- 20:01Speaker 2: meet with Branch and he introduced them to some people.
- 20:04Speaker 2: They ended up getting a ten thousand dollars donation that day,
- 20:07Speaker 2: I think, and that was really the beginning of the
- 20:10Speaker 2: Fellowship of Christian Athletes and really just you know, can
- 20:14Speaker 2: other one of those stories of things that get started.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, generous people helping people. It's a great story.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And no, that is that is that is an amazing story.
- 20:25Speaker 3: You know, I was thinking, those are two jagganic things
- 20:28Speaker 3: that you know, Bran Tricky was a part of. And
- 20:30Speaker 3: then also having your grandfather part of Brand Tricky, who
- 20:33Speaker 3: people don't know that he's the one that signed Jackie
- 20:36Speaker 3: Robinson to break the color barry right in Ajor League Baseball.
- 20:39Speaker 3: And then also to be a part of essentially the
- 20:42Speaker 3: beginning of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Which still goes on today and so many kids and
- 20:49Speaker 2: my grandfather was on the original board. And that's a great,
- 20:53Speaker 2: great organization. And you know, but again just one of
- 20:56Speaker 2: those legacies. I brought a ball too. Here of the
- 21:00Speaker 2: nineteen eighty two team you mentioned Carl who was the
- 21:04Speaker 2: manager at the time. Carl Brooks is the manager. There's
- 21:07Speaker 2: names here like Kevin Fields, Greg Brewer. You know, I
- 21:12Speaker 2: don't know. I'm not even spar Breda Maddox eighty two.
- 21:19Speaker 2: So I would have John hart Is on there is
- 21:21Speaker 2: you know there he is right there, number thirteen, and yeah,
- 21:25Speaker 2: I would have been. I graduated in high school in
- 21:27Speaker 2: seventy nine, so this is a couple of years after
- 21:30Speaker 2: these guys are all seventy five a. You know, you're
- 21:37Speaker 2: getting percentage wise, you're getting much closer to my age
- 21:40Speaker 2: than already up.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this is you know like this, you know,
- 21:46Speaker 3: I remember chasing me and getting these balls. He's diamond
- 21:49Speaker 3: ball has been around forever, but you know, seeing just
- 21:52Speaker 3: this the professional league, the diamond logo, and this is
- 21:57Speaker 3: it was so cool to go chase a foul ball,
- 21:59Speaker 3: you know, seven, eight, nine, ten years old. So if
- 22:03Speaker 3: you give him back, you can get a pop or
- 22:05Speaker 3: a slash or something. Sometimes I'll sneak him off and
- 22:08Speaker 3: throw in the back of my dad's pick up bed
- 22:10Speaker 3: so you can play with them at home. But yeah,
- 22:12Speaker 3: these are you know, so many kids. Phil Pasqual Took Kramer,
- 22:18Speaker 3: So Took Kramer was my coach.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Also played with his son Mark in Pony Leagues.
- 22:25Speaker 3: He was my coach and then as I moved up,
- 22:30Speaker 3: he was our assistant coach on the Indians. So Took
- 22:34Speaker 3: was awesome. He worked at Phillips and calm up, say, Took,
- 22:36Speaker 3: can I come get the key? You're bad, I'll meet
- 22:38Speaker 3: you downstairs. So he'd be in the Phillips building and
- 22:41Speaker 3: you go to the lobby and you get the key
- 22:43Speaker 3: to the stadium and don't get early work in, so
- 22:46Speaker 3: just oh, may just bring.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Back to the swimmers. So it's fun. Well, it's good stuff.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I wish you a lot of luck this season. I
- 22:53Speaker 2: probably won't see a lot of you. I know you're
- 22:56Speaker 2: a busy, busy man this time of year. And yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 2: let's uh we'll be out there to help you need
- 23:03Speaker 2: to get our dungeus night going. I know there's a
- 23:05Speaker 2: kW N night coming up to this year too. You
- 23:08Speaker 2: have big sponsor nights there.
- 23:09Speaker 3: He is, I never wrap up here, but uh, June
- 23:13Speaker 3: twenty seventh is Remax night. And then there it is
- 23:19Speaker 3: in Yeah see I'm getting old Brad June nineteenth, nineteenth.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Everyone can get in Kevin's pocket that night.
- 23:26Speaker 3: So yeah, come down on out on the night Kevin
- 23:29Speaker 3: Kevin pottery writing checks, giving money out for a strack
- 23:32Speaker 3: ass we get is on defense. And then every hit
- 23:35Speaker 3: we get and somebody hits over the K one sign,
- 23:37Speaker 3: Kevin will give away fourteen dollars.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Slip those kids up. I'm close at the top of
- 23:43Speaker 2: the wall.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I think he gave you one hundred and forty on
- 23:46Speaker 3: that one, because I really want to see him.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Round check for one hundred and forty dollars. And of
- 23:50Speaker 2: course there's the big Winget tournament also don't figure out
- 23:53Speaker 2: that around the fourth of July, and uh, all kinds
- 23:58Speaker 2: of other stuff going as we lead on into the
- 24:00Speaker 2: playoffs and and potentially on into the series and such.
- 24:04Speaker 3: And you know, and you talk about the legacy, I
- 24:06Speaker 3: keep going back to your grandfather's like, you know, the
- 24:08Speaker 3: Safari Smiles six or six Gleni Safari Smiles owners is
- 24:13Speaker 3: John Lindblum who's a former player of mine. So he's
- 24:16Speaker 3: been so generous to us giving back. So he help
- 24:20Speaker 3: sponsored part of the you know, besides the widget, it's
- 24:23Speaker 3: that money goes towards the fireworks we have to try,
- 24:25Speaker 3: which is almost six thousand dollars John uh for that.
- 24:29Speaker 3: So yeah, he does awesome. Man. I you know so
- 24:32Speaker 3: many guys around town that who have played not just
- 24:35Speaker 3: for the Engines, that playing for me.
- 24:36Speaker 2: But it's well, that's why I brought good. That's a
- 24:39Speaker 2: good story of that one hundred and one of you.
- 24:41Speaker 3: You know, things have just it just keeps coming back around.
- 24:44Speaker 3: And that's the fantastic thing about every year.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Every year there's a new team and it starts over
- 24:50Speaker 2: and uh and so I move on and a few
- 24:53Speaker 2: stay and and it just regenerates and there's new families
- 24:56Speaker 2: coming in every year that you know, new dynamics, and
- 24:59Speaker 2: you know, it's just it is. Uh. It's one of
- 25:02Speaker 2: those great things about oh yeah, summer in Martlesville. You know,
- 25:05Speaker 2: it's fun.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So the guys on the team this year, I had
- 25:07Speaker 3: to tell him, I go, okay, so Brendan, Brendan will
- 25:10Speaker 3: be pitching on TV. I'm as sure so he'll be
- 25:13Speaker 3: back playing with us. It's so weird to think about that.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I told the guys, I go okay, listen, guys, do
- 25:20Speaker 3: not ask for his autograph during the season. He is
- 25:24Speaker 3: one of your teammates. I go, it's gonna be weird.
- 25:26Speaker 3: I go, he's just like one of you. So it's
- 25:29Speaker 3: funny how some of the younger guys.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Look up to him so much.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, this kid was just a fourteen year old, quiet,
- 25:36Speaker 3: reserved brat when he started out, and you know, just
- 25:39Speaker 3: to watch him grow, it's you know, I love it
- 25:42Speaker 3: with all the.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Guys that go off to college. So this is a
- 25:45Speaker 2: great thing. And congratulations and good luck of this season.
- 25:49Speaker 2: We'll be out as to as many games as we
- 25:52Speaker 2: can get to and everyone what do they need to
- 25:55Speaker 2: do to get get a season patch if they want
- 25:58Speaker 2: to do that, or what are and tickets? Just if
- 26:01Speaker 2: you just want to walk up? How does that work?
- 26:03Speaker 2: That's going to bring back up? So where where we
- 26:06Speaker 2: at here? There's the pass if you wonder, if you're
- 26:09Speaker 2: watching on Facebook live, get one of.
- 26:15Speaker 3: These reach out any player? Uh so what these passes do? Yes,
- 26:24Speaker 3: so we have player sets associated there's a there's a
- 26:27Speaker 3: player fee associated with the regular player, and then it's
- 26:30Speaker 3: half priced for a guy who is just a picture
- 26:32Speaker 3: on our team. So what these do is they if
- 26:35Speaker 3: they sell all their a lot of passes. Regular guys
- 26:38Speaker 3: got to sell thirty pictures, got to sell fifteen fifty
- 26:41Speaker 3: bucks each. If you can do the math that you
- 26:42Speaker 3: know what a player fee costs. If they sell them all,
- 26:47Speaker 3: they're they that player. Their families not out of pocket
- 26:51Speaker 3: any money.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Awesome. And so when we go on the road and
- 26:53Speaker 2: we go to Brands and we go to.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Mountain Home, Arkansas for five days, you could seriously send
- 27:01Speaker 3: your kid with no money and they will stay fed,
- 27:04Speaker 3: they will get drink, they will be taking care of
- 27:07Speaker 3: the whole time there. They don't play any money for
- 27:09Speaker 3: standing in the cabins of the airbnb's. If we stand out,
- 27:12Speaker 3: we're staying in a hotel, doesn't cost It looks like.
- 27:14Speaker 2: We have a lot of fun. We do watch Facebook
- 27:19Speaker 2: a little bit. You see the occasional poach there, and
- 27:21Speaker 2: I'm sure that's only the tip of the iceberg.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Guys go fishing, and we were going to surprise them
- 27:26Speaker 3: this year with uh, you know, we're playing Brands and
- 27:29Speaker 3: it's prospect camp, so we'll be get guys frond of
- 27:32Speaker 3: some uh college coaching coaches and some guys will be
- 27:35Speaker 3: their first experience. But that Sunday, we were going to
- 27:38Speaker 3: surprise them. Surprise. I doubt ain't of them are listening,
- 27:42Speaker 3: but we're going to surprise them with We're gonna take
- 27:44Speaker 3: them to Silver dar City.
- 27:45Speaker 2: For the day, lots of fun. Well, like I said,
- 27:49Speaker 2: good luck this season and to all our listeners out there,
