- 0:00Charlie Marlow talk in AFCNFC championship games, a look ahead
- 0:05preview, Super Bowl 2025. Hello everybody.
- 0:08Also listening in on podcast on Kenny Wallace media.
- 0:12Did you guys watch the games? Did you watch the games all day
- 0:18long for like 7 hours? That's a tough ask.
- 0:22I live in central time here in the great city of St.
- 0:26Louis, MO. So the game start 2:00 central,
- 0:30the second game right around 5:30 there.
- 0:34That's a tough ask. You got kids and all that to sit
- 0:37down and watch 7 hours of football.
- 0:40But I was pretty efficient and productive.
- 0:43I got the the man cave in the basement, which is essentially
- 0:46become my kids playroom and I just was cleaning their their
- 0:51play room, their messes while I'm watching the game and trying
- 0:54to help out and not be the deadbeat dad that just sits down
- 0:57there and watches football for seven straight hours.
- 1:00But that's also essentially what I did.
- 1:03Don't do that very often though, not going to lie.
- 1:05By the way, I bring that up because I put this out on XI
- 1:10believe it was either Saturday or Sunday.
- 1:14Are you guys with me on this? Do you think it'd be better for
- 1:17the NFL if instead of having the AFC and NFC Championship game
- 1:21both on Sunday, they did one on the Saturday and the other one
- 1:27on Sunday and they can switch it up?
- 1:30Doesn't have to be AFC on Saturday, NFC on Sunday,
- 1:32whatever it is. Do you guys like that idea?
- 1:35I know people say that the AFCNFC championship game Sunday,
- 1:38it's actually the best football day of the year, better than the
- 1:42Super Bowl. And I don't necessarily
- 1:44disagree, but I'm also a person where I like that one event each
- 1:49day to focus on. And if you're the NFL, you could
- 1:52own two different days. You could own that Saturday.
- 1:56Think about it, the game's going to be three, 3 1/2 hours.
- 2:00The post game, the post game ceremony is going to be half an
- 2:04hour. You do a 2 hour pre game show,
- 2:07you do an hour post game show. You still got something like 7
- 2:10hours of coverage each day. I think the NFL should look at
- 2:14that. That's just my opinion.
- 2:16What do you guys think? All right, let's get to the
- 2:17games and we'll go in reverse order.
- 2:20We'll go backwards because the late game, by the way, was by
- 2:24far the better game, classic game.
- 2:28Bills, Chiefs, Chiefs win 3229. I was looking at the the stats
- 2:35and you talk about an evenly matched game.
- 2:38Look at this. So total yards, Bills 374.
- 2:43Chiefs 368. Time of possession Bills 30
- 2:48minutes and 32 seconds. Chiefs 29 minutes and 28
- 2:53seconds. Bills penalized 6 times for 48
- 2:56yards, Chiefs five times for 21 yards.
- 2:59The Chiefs did have a turnover there, but essentially identical
- 3:03stats. Chiefs 233.
- 3:06Passing yards, Bills 227. Rushing yards, Chiefs 135, Bills
- 3:12147. You look at the team stats and
- 3:15Dang, so close total plays. Bill 68, Chiefs 63.
- 3:21But in the end, the Chiefs win the game 3229.
- 3:25I mean, this is a freaking dynasty, folks.
- 3:27What do you think about this? I have nothing against the
- 3:30Chiefs, nothing against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelsey, Taylor
- 3:35Swift. I know some people don't like
- 3:36all that, but I'm just a little tired of them and it's nothing
- 3:40they did to me. It's more about I just like to
- 3:43see new teams win, different teams win.
- 3:48And I have to say also, I do feel sorry for Buffalo Bills
- 3:53fans. And this is going back, what,
- 3:573035 years now? I'm 42 years old.
- 4:01I'll be 43 years old this year. Everybody remembers the Bills,
- 4:06those great Buffalo Bills 90s teams, Jim Kelly, Marv Levy and
- 4:14going to four straight Super Bowls, Thurman Thomas, right,
- 4:19Don Beebee, the names, the list goes on and on.
- 4:23Four straight Super Bowls and could never win a Super Bowl.
- 4:28And so I feel sorry for Bill's Mafia.
- 4:31Cool fanbase. They love football up there.
- 4:36Place like that. I've only been to one game at
- 4:39Bill Stadium, whatever they call it, Orchard Park up there.
- 4:41But it was awesome. Bill's Mafia is legit.
- 4:44They're passionate. It's one of those places where
- 4:46there's not much else to do besides be a football fan
- 4:50besides be a hockey fan, right? That's what being a a member of
- 4:55Bill's Mafia is all about. You got to love that.
- 4:59You got to love it. So I feel bad for Bill's Mafia,
- 5:02feel bad for the fans, but also they had their chances.
- 5:05I mean, at the end of the day, Josh Allen and the Bills, one of
- 5:09these days they just have to breakthrough.
- 5:12But you're running up against a freaking dynasty in Patrick
- 5:17Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 5:19That's the thing. It's starting to look like
- 5:22Michael Jordan when Michael Jordan was going through his
- 5:26back-to-back three peats with the Chicago Bulls.
- 5:29How many other great players were never able to win a
- 5:32championship against Jordan for all those years, whether it be
- 5:36the Knicks, Patrick Ewing? Well, you had some great Indiana
- 5:40Pacers teams there. But that's that's what you're
- 5:44having here with the Chiefs because you have generational
- 5:48and Hall of Fame future Hall of Fame quarterbacks like Josh
- 5:52Allen. And what is he now, Owen 4
- 5:54versus the Chiefs in the playoffs?
- 5:57Lamar Jackson, How many MVPS is he going to have?
- 6:00And that's right there in the AFC.
- 6:03And these guys sometimes can't get past each other before they
- 6:06even get to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
- 6:09You saw Joe Burrow and the Bengals breakthrough a few years
- 6:14ago. But man, it's, it's hard for me.
- 6:16I, I can't hate on the Chiefs. Like I said, I'm not, I'm not
- 6:19mad at him. I don't, I don't hate him.
- 6:21I just like to see new teams. And now we have a a rematch of
- 6:24the Super Bowl from a couple years ago, which I couldn't
- 6:28remember if that was a great Super Bowl or not.
- 6:29It was, by the way, 3835 Chiefs, Eagles.
- 6:35So hopefully we have that again. For me, I'd like the reverse
- 6:39outcome though. I'd like to see the Eagles now
- 6:41breakthrough and beat the Chiefs just because again, let's see
- 6:45some new teams win. I know the Eagles won a few
- 6:48years back with Nick Foles and all that, but that was also a a
- 6:53time ago, right? I mean, that wasn't the same
- 6:55team with Jalen Hurts and all that.
- 6:57So for me, you know, different coaching staff, enough time has
- 7:00passed where I'm OK with the Eagles winning the Super Bowl.
- 7:04What did you guys think of that game, though?
- 7:07I think in the end, first of all, you have Patrick Mahomes,
- 7:10who's probably the greatest of all time.
- 7:13He might not win more Super Bowls and Tom Brady, but I think
- 7:16he's a better quarterback than Tom Brady.
- 7:19He makes plays. He makes throws that really
- 7:22nobody else makes. I I would have said Aaron
- 7:26Rodgers back in the day, but there's even some throws that
- 7:28Patrick Mahomes makes that I don't think anybody in the
- 7:30history of the NFL can make. The other thing is, I feel like
- 7:35when you watch the Chiefs play, they have a coaching advantage,
- 7:40they have a play calling advantage.
- 7:42That's pretty obvious when you watch them and you watch other
- 7:45teams. Andy Reid is an absolute
- 7:48offensive genius and he's getting better and better with
- 7:52age. The way he draws up plays and
- 7:55motion, it just always seems like somebody's open.
- 8:00And then you look on the other side of the ball, Steve Spagnolo
- 8:03dialing up exotic blitzes the way he did at the end with a
- 8:07corner blitz, catching Josh Allen and the Bills off guard on
- 8:13the biggest play of their season defensively for the Chiefs.
- 8:17And by the way, so people know. So again, I live in Saint Louis
- 8:22and I covered the Rams from 2008 till when they left.
- 8:27And when I got here, basically you had the Rams and they got
- 8:33rid of their coach right then and Steve Spagnolo came in the
- 8:37the next year. So that was 2009.
- 8:41So Spags was here, what, 3-4 years?
- 8:44I'll look it up. But it was a really, really
- 8:47rough stretch for the Rams under Steve Spagnolo.
- 8:50And I don't think he did a good job at all as a head coach, to
- 8:53be honest with you. He focused on the wrong things.
- 8:55Now, also, it was it was a, an organization that was totally
- 9:00dysfunctional. But Spags had some
- 9:03self-inflicted wounds as well. He he didn't focus on things
- 9:06that matter. There's a lot of talk in the
- 9:08media about him taking down old pictures from the Greatest Show
- 9:12on Turf. And he would worry about where
- 9:14the photographers were standing and the media couldn't use a
- 9:17certain bathroom. And it's like, focus on the
- 9:20field. Focus on what's going on in the
- 9:21field. OK.
- 9:23So I was not a huge fan of Spags when he was here.
- 9:26Nice guy, by the way. And his wife, Maria, great
- 9:29people interviewed him a million times.
- 9:32I don't think he did a good job at all as a head coach of the
- 9:34Saint Louis Rams. He'd probably even tell you
- 9:36that. But also, this dude is an
- 9:38unbelievable defensive coordinator.
- 9:41You got to give him credit going back to his days with the New
- 9:44York Giants. I know he had a bad year there
- 9:46right with the New Orleans Saints, but how many Super Bowls
- 9:50is this dude going to have when it's all said and done?
- 9:52And and look, it's it's not a knock to say that this dude
- 9:57isn't a a great or even good NFL head coach, but he's an elite,
- 10:01unbelievable defensive coordinator.
- 10:03And I don't know if he'll get another chance as a head coach.
- 10:05Maybe he doesn't want another chance as a head coach.
- 10:07Maybe he loves the fact that he's winning Super Bowls.
- 10:11He's with a great organization now with the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 10:15with Andy Reid, he can take over the defense.
- 10:17You have the best quarterback in the history of football,
- 10:20arguably with Patrick Mahomes. So maybe Spags is very happy
- 10:24right there as the DC with the Chiefs.
- 10:26What I'm trying to say though is that dude is really good at his
- 10:29job. He is really good as ADC and
- 10:32when you watch those games, it sure looks like the chiefs have
- 10:36a coaching advantage on both sides of the football and
- 10:39they're really good organizationally at drafting and
- 10:43finding value as well. So I want your guys comments
- 10:47watching the game you had Jim Nance, Tony Romo.
- 10:51I also, at the end of the game, I had to run to the store real
- 10:54quick for my wife and I was listening to the game on the
- 10:56radio for a bit and that was actually during the
- 10:59controversial spot call. I want to hear your guys
- 11:02comments on that as well. But I was listening to Kevin
- 11:06Harlan. Kevin Harlan is just freaking
- 11:08unbelievable on the broadcast. He's so good.
- 11:11As I was listening to him, I'm like, you know what?
- 11:14I almost prefer listening on the radio 'cause I feel like Kevin
- 11:16Harlan is that good. He adds that much to the game.
- 11:22So want to hear from you guys on that.
- 11:24And look, I know there was a lot of talk, there was a lot of
- 11:30discussion, huge narrative about the Chiefs getting basically
- 11:33every single call and all that. And then there were some stats
- 11:36that back that up over the years that the Chiefs got a ton of
- 11:38calls in the play offs. This game.
- 11:41I I told you about the turnovers.
- 11:43It was pretty damn close, six and five and I think yardage was
- 11:46maybe 48 yards versus the Bills and 21 penalty yards versus the
- 11:51Chiefs. Whatever it is, it was it was
- 11:53pretty close. I also think the Chiefs are just
- 11:56really good, right? Mahomes is really good.
- 12:00I'm not saying it's a good thing, but in terms of just kind
- 12:02of knowing how to get calls, and I, I said this, I was very
- 12:06public last week. I thought the Chiefs got every
- 12:09single 5050 call versus the Houston Texans.
- 12:13That was pretty egregious to me. I didn't think this game was
- 12:16decided by the officials at all. And by the way, I didn't think
- 12:20last week's was decided by the officials at all.
- 12:22It just became a big storyline. I'm not saying that the Chiefs
- 12:25would have lost to the Texans. It just became a huge,
- 12:28overwhelming storyline when on the surface, one team seems to
- 12:33be getting every single 5050 call.
- 12:36All right, let's let's go back then.
- 12:38The first game, OK, Eagles commanders, not a very good
- 12:43game. And this one just straight up
- 12:45came down to turnovers. I haven't looked at the stats.
- 12:48I'm not saying I'm not saying that the commanders would have
- 12:52won this game without the turnovers.
- 12:53I don't think they would have. But it had been a much better
- 12:56football game when you're watching that.
- 12:58So in the end, it's 5523. But early on in that game, so
- 13:03many unforced errors by the commanders.
- 13:07So let's go ahead and look at the the stats here.
- 13:10Turnovers I mean this pretty much tells the story 4 turnovers
- 13:15for Washington, 0 for the Philadelphia Eagles zero and
- 13:21this was kind of the the storyline last week too in terms
- 13:25of you look at that game between the bills and the Ravens, who
- 13:29turns the ball over less right. That team is usually going to
- 13:33win in the playoffs in bad weather where there's not a a
- 13:36ton of offense typically, although in this game you had
- 13:41the Eagles just scoring at will, especially on the ground.
- 13:46And look at the yards disparity. Eagles 459 Commanders, 350
- 13:52rushing yards, 229 rushing yards for the Eagles.
- 13:57But again, look, look, time of possession, 30 minutes, 31
- 14:02seconds for Philly, 29 minutes, 29 seconds.
- 14:05Basically, even you look at that, you go, oh, is it an even
- 14:07game? Hell no, Eagles just demolished
- 14:10them 5523 winning the turnover battle for zip.
- 14:14So again, look, if the commanders, I know it's kind of
- 14:18like if if grandpa had balls, she'd be grandma, he'd be
- 14:23grandma, whichever way you say it, right?
- 14:25But I mean, take the four turnovers away.
- 14:27It's a much better game. I still don't think, look, just
- 14:30go right there. I mean, give the commanders,
- 14:33let's say they score a touchdown in every single one of those
- 14:36drives. OK, it's it's a much closer
- 14:38game, but I think the Eagles still win.
- 14:41But the turnovers were the story Eagles unbelievable team.
- 14:45Another another really well run organization.
- 14:48And that's what if you're if you're a fan of football and
- 14:52just doing things the right way, the Eagles and the Chiefs, they
- 14:55both do that drafting, finding value.
- 15:01Now on the other side, look, look, Jaden Daniels unbelievable
- 15:04season as a rookie, he led my fantasy football team have to
- 15:07say all season long. But I remember Jason Kelsey said
- 15:11this. And I'm not even saying that
- 15:14Jaden Daniels necessarily is better overall than Jalen Hurts,
- 15:18but he was looking at just the fact that Jaden Daniels had led
- 15:22the Commanders to the NFC championship game.
- 15:25And he goes, you know what if you take away the quarterbacks,
- 15:28though, And he wasn't even trying to knock Jalen Hurts.
- 15:32Yeah, Jalen Jaden, Jalen Jaden. But what he was saying was he
- 15:36would take the the Eagles basically at every other
- 15:40position group. And I know he's biased a little
- 15:42bit, maybe a lot because he was a long time Eagle, but he's also
- 15:45an NFL analyst. I think he was right.
- 15:48You can you can say Jaden Daniels is is better than Jalen
- 15:51Hurts, pretty close. But whatever.
- 15:53Where else would you rather have a commander's player or a
- 15:58position group instead of the Philadelphia Eagles?
- 16:00That's what he's trying to say. And I think that was a pretty
- 16:03fair and apartment statement. Broadcasters, I'm going to go
- 16:09back to broadcasting because you know, Jim Nance.
- 16:12When you hear Jim Nance, it feels like a big game.
- 16:15When you hear to me, Kevin Harlan, it feels like a big
- 16:18game. Even though I'm not the biggest
- 16:20Romo fan and he he's fine. I don't really critique
- 16:24broadcasters that much. But the reason I bring this up,
- 16:27Tom Brady is such a big name. He's trying his best out there.
- 16:32He's just he's just not a great analyst yet.
- 16:34And I also think like Kevin Burghardt, great, great analyst,
- 16:39right? I mean, pro, but he's also he's
- 16:42not a Nance yet. He's not a Joe Buck.
- 16:45He's not a Kevin Harlan. Just because he's younger now,
- 16:48maybe he he becomes that guy. It's really hard to replace a
- 16:52Joe Buck. I mean, same with baseball.
- 16:54Joe Davis had to replace Joe Buck for the World Series for
- 16:58Fox Baseball. Now, obviously it was different
- 17:00because Joe Buck and Troy Aikman moved from Fox to ESPN.
- 17:03But still, I think it takes a while as a broadcast crew to to
- 17:09to feel as iconic as some of these big names, the, the Joe
- 17:13Bucks, the AL Michaels, the Jim Nance of the world.
- 17:17And I'm one of the guys. I know a lot of people say this.
- 17:20I think Greg Olson is a better analyst than Tom Brady right
- 17:24now, especially clearly Tom Brady's a bigger name.
- 17:27Maybe Tom Brady does become a really good analyst.
- 17:31And then you understand, they gave him a huge contract.
- 17:33What did they give him was like $275 million for 10 years,
- 17:37whatever it was unbelievable contract for Tom Brady.
- 17:40And he's he's trying. He's out there smiling, clearly.
- 17:45I mean, the dude knows the game, but it's hard to articulate it
- 17:48in quick little spurts there right before the next play is
- 17:52called. What do you guys think?
- 17:54Kevin Harlan To me, I'd take Kevin Harlan over anybody.
- 17:58I like Nance Nance for me, little little squeaky clean.
- 18:03I I like a little more fun in the booth.
- 18:06I like a little more edge in the booth.
- 18:09But Nancy's a golf guy and all that.
- 18:11Kevin Harlan to me though, is just it's just the man.
- 18:14When I hear Kevin Harlan's voice, he elevates the sporting
- 18:18event to me. But I want to hear from you guys
- 18:20as well. So I'm not going to go super
- 18:23long here, but Super Bowl coming up here, Super Bowl 2025,
- 18:30whatever the hell the Roman numeral is, because again, we
- 18:32only care about Roman numerals when it comes to Super Bowls.
- 18:35I want the Eagles to win. I won't be mad at the Chiefs
- 18:39win, but I've had enough of the Chiefs.
- 18:42There's a big, there's a big debate also here in Saint Louis
- 18:45about if Saint Louis football fans should be Chiefs fans
- 18:50because clearly we're in the same state even though we're on
- 18:53opposite sides and Kansas City is a good 3 1/2 hours away.
- 18:58We don't have a team because our Rams left.
- 19:01So you want to root for a team. We have a bunch of teams within
- 19:04about a three, 3 1/2, four hour radius.
- 19:07If you just go around, you got the Chiefs, you got Dub Bears,
- 19:12you got the Tennessee Titans. Who am I missing there?
- 19:15That's that's relatively close. Packers aren't super far away,
- 19:22but also you had the Chiefs and the fact that they voted against
- 19:25us in terms of when the team was relocated.
- 19:29I will say this, I have a 7 year old daughter, 3 1/2 year old
- 19:33son. Especially with my daughter when
- 19:35I see a bunch of kids around the playground and all that, or if
- 19:39I'm watching one of her sporting events.
- 19:41So many Mahomes jerseys, so many Kansas City Chiefs jerseys.
- 19:45But you probably don't see that just honestly in in Saint Louis
- 19:48because we're kind of close. You probably see that all over
- 19:50the country because Patrick Mahomes is such an incredible
- 19:54and also fun player to watch. You see some Kelsey jerseys here
- 19:58and there. I'm sure there.
- 19:59Hey, look, there's probably a lot of young girls that now are
- 20:01Chiefs fans because of Taylor Swift.
- 20:03My daughter hasn't gotten to Taylor Swift yet, but I know
- 20:06that that phase is is certainly coming.
- 20:08Once again, I want to hear from you guys in the comments.
- 20:12What do you think about everything I said?
- 20:15Do you like Do you like both games?
- 20:18Being on Sunday, I'd like to split them up.
- 20:21The other thing is here's here's what I was thinking though.
- 20:24People were complaining about the College Football Playoff
- 20:26National championship game being on a Monday, which I don't love
- 20:29either. But what if you made this past
- 20:32weekend just the massive football weekend?
- 20:36What if you kept AFCNFC championship game on Sunday, but
- 20:39you had the College Football Playoff National Championship
- 20:43game on Saturday night about 6:30 central time?
- 20:49Saturdays, those are for college football.
- 20:51Sundays are for the NFL. To me, I like the NFL games on
- 20:55Saturdays, but only when the college football season ends.
- 20:59Do you guys feel like the the college football national
- 21:03championship game, has it been kind of has it lost a little bit
- 21:07of its luster as it kind of goes further in the NFL playoffs?
- 21:12It's on a Monday night, kind of a weird night to me.
- 21:15Saturday makes all the sense in the world, unless you're going
- 21:19to do the holiday thing and you're going to build it around
- 21:22New Year's, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, but specifically New
- 21:26Year's Day. New Year's Day is another day
- 21:27that college football has historically owned.
- 21:30So those are my thoughts on the AFCNFC Championship games.
- 21:35I appreciate you guys watching. I appreciate you guys listening.
- 21:38For all of our local people, please support our sponsors, our
- 21:41local sponsors, Triad Bank, Triad banking.com.
- 21:45Best thing I ever did for my rental property business, taking
