- 0:43This morning scripture comes from the Gospel of Mark chapter
- 0:4710. Then they reached Jericho and as
- 0:51Jesus said, his disciples left the town.
- 0:54A large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus,
- 0:58son of Timaeus was sitting beside the road.
- 1:01When Bartimaeus heard the cry that Jesus would now as the
- 1:05earth was nearby, he began to shout.
- 1:07Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me, be quiet.
- 1:12Many people yelled at him, but he only shouted louder.
- 1:15Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.
- 1:18When Jesus heard him he stopped and said Tell him to come here
- 1:22and so they called the blind man.
- 1:24Cheer up. They said come on he is calling
- 1:26you. Bartimaeus threw side his coat,
- 1:29jumped up and came to Jesus. What do you want me to do for
- 1:33you? Jesus asked my rabbi.
- 1:35The blind man said I want to see and Jesus said to him, go for go
- 1:41for in your go, for your faith has healed you.
- 1:44Instantly the man could see and he followed Jesus down the road.
- 1:48This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 1:51Thanks be to God, it's. Interesting to me.
- 1:57The way that. Different people.
- 2:00Handle change at. Different points in.
- 2:03Life right? Sometimes we don't.
- 2:06Like our current. Situation and.
- 2:08We're we're looking for. Change to come.
- 2:12Other times we're a little more reticent for that.
- 2:16Change to come. Still other times.
- 2:18We know. That there's a.
- 2:20Change that needs to take place. But we either.
- 2:24Don't know. How to start the change?
- 2:26Or we aren't willing to do what we know we need to in.
- 2:32Order to affect. That.
- 2:34Change. You ever had that experience?
- 2:40Have you ever wanted to make a change in life?
- 2:42But either not known where to start the process in order to
- 2:46get you from where you are to where you.
- 2:48Want to be or you know that you need to what you need to do?
- 2:55But you're unwilling. To actually.
- 2:57Do it either because it seems. Too difficult.
- 3:00Or maybe sometimes. Because it seems too easy.
- 3:04For me. One of those things is getting
- 3:07to a little. Healthier of a weight, right?
- 3:11Now, I'm not body shaming myself or anything like that this
- 3:15morning, but I know that I would.
- 3:17Feel better if I. Shed a few.
- 3:19Pounds right and I'd be more. Available to God, to my family.
- 3:25In the future, whatever. God might have for me down the
- 3:28road, and I know I need. To eat better.
- 3:33I already know that more. Whole Foods, more fruits and
- 3:37vegetables, less processed foods.
- 3:42But I really like ice cream and I really liked baked.
- 3:46Goods, right? And so I'm stuck in that place
- 3:51of deciding which. Hard.
- 3:54Am I going to choose? Am I going to choose?
- 3:57The hard of. Complacency.
- 3:59With my current reality and the trajectory that I'm on, or am I
- 4:04going to start? Doing the small things.
- 4:07That I already know I need to do.
- 4:10And lean into that hard right we we have a choice I've.
- 4:17Always been struck. By the times in the.
- 4:19Gospels where Jesus encounters someone.
- 4:23And often that someone is. A person who seemingly.
- 4:27Has a very obvious need. Right, like a.
- 4:30Healing and Jesus asks a question at the pool of
- 4:36Bethesda. The question was do you want to
- 4:40get well? Seems.
- 4:44Like a no brainer to me, right? Who?
- 4:47Wouldn't want to get well, but Jesus asks the question.
- 4:54Or in the story in today's scripture reading that Ben read
- 4:58for us. As Jesus is walking out of.
- 5:02Jericho. He's on his way to Jerusalem for
- 5:04the last. Time, right, He knows.
- 5:07He's going up to Jerusalem. To face his own death and his
- 5:12disciples. Are with him.
- 5:13There's a crowd. That's following them.
- 5:16And there's a. Blind beggar seated on the side.
- 5:20Of the road there as they're leaving Jericho and this blind
- 5:25beggar, he hears that Jesus of Nazareth is.
- 5:30Passing by so he begins to shout to.
- 5:32Try to get. Jesus's attention, he's crying
- 5:36out. Jesus, son of David, have mercy
- 5:40on me. You see he.
- 5:43Recognizes in what he's heard about Jesus the fulfillment of
- 5:50God's promises that a Messiah was going to come, that's what.
- 5:54It means when Bartimaeus. Says when he calls Jesus the son
- 5:58of David, he's looking for the messiahs.
- 6:02And so Bartimaeus is shouting, and the crowd is trying to hush
- 6:07him, and they're telling him to be quiet.
- 6:09They're trying to put him back in his.
- 6:11Place there on the margins. Of society.
- 6:16But Bartimaeus cries. Out even.
- 6:19Louder. Jesus, son of David, have mercy
- 6:24on me. And it's after this.
- 6:27Second round of yelling that Jesus.
- 6:30Hears Bartimaeus or. At least this is when he stops
- 6:36and Jesus. Calls Bart Bartimaeus.
- 6:39To him and the message is passed.
- 6:42Through the crowd and miraculously.
- 6:44That crowd's attention shifts on a dime.
- 6:48Right, their attitude. Shifts and they begin.
- 6:51To encourage him. Get up, take.
- 6:54Heart they say he's he's calling for you.
- 6:57And so Bartimaeus. This blind.
- 6:59Beggar who probably. Needed help even to.
- 7:02Find the right. Place to sit.
- 7:04On the side of the road so he could.
- 7:05Beg that. Morning, he jumps.
- 7:08To his feet. And he throws.
- 7:10Off his cloak and he goes to Jesus, and so Jesus is standing.
- 7:18There in the middle of the road. Face to face.
- 7:23With blind Bartimaeus. And Jesus, this time he he
- 7:28doesn't put his. Hands on Bartimaeus.
- 7:30'S face. He doesn't kneel down in the
- 7:34dirt and spit and make some mud that he puts on the face.
- 7:38Not this time. He does that somewhere else, but
- 7:41not this time. Jesus asks a question.
- 7:47What do you want? Me to do for you, and I don't
- 7:54think Bartimaeus even. Hesitated in that moment.
- 7:57My. Rabbi, he said.
- 7:59I want to see. I've come to really appreciate.
- 8:08What Jesus is doing here, I think it shows us something so.
- 8:14Central to the work. Of Jesus, not just in the
- 8:20Gospels, in these. Stories that we read in this.
- 8:22Word that's been passed down to us, but it shows us how, he
- 8:26continues. To work.
- 8:27With us today. Because Jesus asks the question,
- 8:35He doesn't. Force.
- 8:36Us into change. Sorry, I'm having trouble with
- 8:39this mic today. It's driving me nuts.
- 8:42I'll try to stop. Messing with it.
- 8:47But he. He doesn't.
- 8:48Force us to. Change, he invites us.
- 8:52Into transformation, right? He's.
- 8:56Willing to do. The work.
- 8:57Within us, but he wants. Our participation.
- 9:00With it he wants. Our cooperation.
- 9:04We call. This synergism.
- 9:06Like Jeremy told us. Last week, right?
- 9:08It's working together us. With God, it's how God.
- 9:13Has chosen to work in this world and.
- 9:15Specifically with us human beings.
- 9:19God's still. Sovereign.
- 9:20He's all powerful. He can.
- 9:22Do anything he wants to do. But it's rare that God.
- 9:27Moves in in a. Unilateral way.
- 9:30Right in a way where we're not involved.
- 9:32He he comes to us, he comes 90% of the way.
- 9:37And he's waiting for us to just. Meet him in that last.
- 9:41Little bit. But I don't.
- 9:46Think this story. With Jesus.
- 9:49And Bartimaeus. Is the only place where we see
- 9:53this dynamic. At work in the story of
- 9:57Scripture SO this morning. I want to tell.
- 10:00You briefly 3 more stories. That we find.
- 10:05In scripture that illustrate. How God invites us into.
- 10:09The work. That he's doing and how God
- 10:12limits himself according. To our response, right Notice
- 10:19you'll need to start writing your letters yet.
- 10:21Notice I'm not saying that we. Have the power.
- 10:25To limit God. Right, God.
- 10:27Can still do anything he wants to do, but in bestowing.
- 10:35Real authority. And real agency to humanity.
- 10:40God chooses to limit himself. To grant us.
- 10:45Real choices that have a real effect in.
- 10:49The world around. US.
- 10:53Right. So our first story this morning,
- 10:57well, I guess it's actually our second one because we already
- 10:59heard Bartimaeus, but our first story comes from.
- 11:01The Old Testament. It's the story of a foreign
- 11:04military commander. Who led?
- 11:07The military of a country called.
- 11:09Aram, one of Israel's enemies. And the thing about this?
- 11:14Aramean military commander. Was that he was.
- 11:17Suffering from leprosy, right This.
- 11:20Skin disease that. Was really pretty terrible.
- 11:25Not going to go into all the details, but Naman, his name was
- 11:30Naman by the way. He wanted a change in his life.
- 11:34He needed a change in his life because ultimately this disease
- 11:38was going to lead him to death. But Naaman didn't even know
- 11:43where to begin looking. For the change he needed.
- 11:48And and one day a young. Israelite girl.
- 11:52Who had come into? The the service.
- 11:54Of Naaman's wife. Through being captured in in war
- 11:58or a raid or. Something along those lines.
- 12:01This young Israelite girl says. To Naaman's wife.
- 12:05I wish my master would go and see.
- 12:08The prophet in Israel. He would heal him of his.
- 12:11Leprosy, so. You know how these things go.
- 12:15Naaman's wife. Hears this from the young girl
- 12:17she. Goes and she tells Naaman, and
- 12:20Naaman then tells the king of Aram all about it and the king.
- 12:24Of Aram says. Go go see and so when.
- 12:30They arrived there with carts full of gifts and a letter.
- 12:36Of introduction. From the.
- 12:38King Elisha the. Prophet in Israel.
- 12:43He doesn't even come out to see this.
- 12:46Powerful commander. Instead, he passes messages.
- 12:50Through his servant. Who instructs Naman to go and
- 12:54dip himself? In the Jordan River.
- 12:56Seven times. After which.
- 13:00He would be healed. So now we have Naaman standing
- 13:04outside of Elijah's house. He's angry.
- 13:07He's offended. The prophet didn't even come to
- 13:10speak to him. He didn't make a big.
- 13:13Deal of of. Showing Naaman and his healing
- 13:16to the people around them. Instead, he tells Naaman to go
- 13:19and wash. In The Dirty little Jordan
- 13:23River. When they had much bigger and.
- 13:26Finer rivers back. Home in Damascus he doesn't
- 13:31want. To do it.
- 13:34He now knows what he needs to do and he doesn't want.
- 13:38To do it. But listen to.
- 13:41What the officers who are with. Naman say to him this is second
- 13:47Kings chapter. 5 verses 13 and 14.
- 13:52But his officers tried to reason with.
- 13:55Him and said, Sir. If the prophet.
- 13:57Had told. You something very difficult.
- 14:00Wouldn't you have done it? So you should certainly obey.
- 14:03Him when he says simply go and wash.
- 14:07And be cured. So Naaman went down.
- 14:09To the Jordan River. And dipped himself 7 times as
- 14:13the man of. God had instructed.
- 14:14Him and his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young
- 14:18child and he. Was healed.
- 14:25So you've got Naaman this big? Military commander.
- 14:34And Elijah? Says just go dip in the river 7
- 14:36times. If Elijah had told Naman to do
- 14:41something. Difficult or heroic?
- 14:46He would have done it. In a heartbeat.
- 14:48Right, it would have seemed. Worthy.
- 14:50Of his healing, but instead Elijah told Naaman to do
- 14:56something very simple to dip. In the river.
- 14:59Seven times. It wasn't hard.
- 15:05It wasn't dangerous, it wasn't complicated, and in Naaman's
- 15:10mind, it was beneath him, right? So he almost didn't do it.
- 15:18Naaman almost allowed. His pride and his stubbornness.
- 15:23To keep him. From this miraculous.
- 15:26Healing that God. Had in store for him. 2nd.
- 15:30Story. Comes from the.
- 15:32Book of Acts. And.
- 15:33Features the Prophet or not the prophet, The Apostle Peter.
- 15:39Peter. Who had?
- 15:40Walked closely. With Jesus.
- 15:42Right, not. Just as one of his 12 disciples,
- 15:46but as one of the. Three on the inner circle,
- 15:50right? Those who had been with him on
- 15:51the mount of. Transfiguration.
- 15:53Who prayed with him in the Garden of Gethsemane, or at
- 15:57least fell asleep trying to pray with him in the Garden of
- 16:00Gethsemane. Peter.
- 16:02Who is now one of the? Key leaders of these people who
- 16:06followed the way of. Jesus, one day.
- 16:10Peter is up on his roof and he's praying.
- 16:14And he has. A dream he has his vision where
- 16:17God. Tells him to eat.
- 16:19Foods that were considered. Unclean in the.
- 16:22Jewish dietary laws. God's message.
- 16:24To Peter through. All this was that Peter should
- 16:27not call unclean what God had made clean the same time he's
- 16:32having these this vision then representatives.
- 16:36Of a Roman centurion named Cornelius.
- 16:39Show up at. Peter's door and they asked
- 16:43Peter to go. With them to Cornelius's house.
- 16:46Cornelius being a. Roman Centurion, not someone.
- 16:52Who's Jewish right and and? Jewish and Gentile people, they
- 16:55didn't mix all that much. But Peter?
- 16:59With the help of the Holy. Spirit, he begins.
- 17:01To put the pieces. Together of.
- 17:03What God might be doing and so. Maybe a little bit reluctantly.
- 17:10He goes to. Share with Cornelius.
- 17:12And I want you to listen to. Luke How Luke records Peter's.
- 17:16Testimony in acts. Chapter 11, beginning in verse.
- 17:2015 as I began to speak. Peter continued the Holy Spirit.
- 17:26Fell on them just as he fell on us at the beginning, then I
- 17:31thought. Of the Lord's words when he
- 17:33said. John.
- 17:33Baptized with water, but you will be.
- 17:36Baptized with. The Holy Spirit.
- 17:38And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift He gave
- 17:43us when we believed. In the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 17:46Who was I to stand in God's way when the.
- 17:50Others heard this. They stopped objecting.
- 17:53And began praising God, they said.
- 17:54We can see that God has also given the Gentiles.
- 17:58The privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving
- 18:02eternal. Life gentiles too.
- 18:11Peter wasn't looking for this. Kind of change that day when he
- 18:16went up on his. Roof to pray.
- 18:19Up until that point, most of the people coming to faith in Jesus
- 18:23were coming from a Jewish background.
- 18:25They had this commonality to them.
- 18:30But Peter chose to cooperate with what?
- 18:33God was wanting to do and even though Peter's.
- 18:37Cooperation might have been somewhat reluctant.
- 18:40God. Used it to do something bigger
- 18:44than what? Peter.
- 18:46Wanted. Peter said yes.
- 18:50To the change that he. Was confronted with.
- 18:52Yes to the. Opportunity that God.
- 18:55Gave him. And the door was opened for.
- 18:58People outside the Jewish faith. Gentiles to receive.
- 19:04Salvation. And the rest, as they say, is
- 19:09history, right? We're here today.
- 19:11Because of what God did that day.
- 19:16Our last story I want to touch on comes from the Gospel of
- 19:19Mark. It's found at the tail.
- 19:22End of A larger story, a longer story.
- 19:24Of Jesus delivering the man. With the Legion.
- 19:28Of demons, right if you. Know that.
- 19:30Story This man was living among the tombs.
- 19:33He had this supernatural strength.
- 19:35No one could control him. They could bind him with with
- 19:38chains and he. Would break them.
- 19:40He was living there. Among the tombs.
- 19:44And when Jesus casts the demons out of this man, he allows them
- 19:48to go. Into the herd of pigs that was
- 19:51there on the hillside over 2000. Pigs and when the demons enter
- 19:55these. Pigs, they rush.
- 19:57Down the hill into the lake and drown.
- 20:01And those who are caring for the pigs there?
- 20:03That they leave. They run away.
- 20:05And they go telling everyone, everywhere all that had.
- 20:08Happened to share. What they had just.
- 20:11Experienced and Mark. Continues the.
- 20:13Story like this in verse 14 the herdsmen.
- 20:19Fled. To the nearby town and the
- 20:21surrounding countryside spreading.
- 20:23The news as they ran. People rushed out to.
- 20:27See what had happened A. Crowd soon gathered around.
- 20:30Jesus And they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion
- 20:34of demons. He was sitting.
- 20:36There fully clothed and perfectly.
- 20:39Sane and they. Were all afraid.
- 20:43Then those who had seen what happened.
- 20:45Told the others about the demon. Possessed man and the pigs and
- 20:49the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them
- 20:56alone like. Peter, the townspeople weren't
- 21:02looking for a change. That day they had built a a nice
- 21:07little life and and even with the man who was demonized kind
- 21:11of. There on.
- 21:12The the. Outskirts of their.
- 21:14Community. They saw Jesus.
- 21:17'S work as a disruption. Of that life, a disruption they
- 21:22didn't want. And so they beg Jesus.
- 21:28To leave. Them and he.
- 21:32Does right Jesus? Gets back.
- 21:35In the boat if we were to continue reading it and he
- 21:37returns to the other side. Of the lake Jesus knew when he
- 21:44wasn't wanted, and so he left. And the people there, in those
- 21:50towns, they missed out on what God could have done, the
- 21:56transformation and life. He could have brought into their
- 21:59community. So we've got.
- 22:03These four stories. Bartimaeus.
- 22:08Naman, Peter. The townspeople.
- 22:12Four different people, four different situations, four
- 22:18different results. And it got.
- 22:22Me wondering. What do we want Jesus to do?
- 22:29For us, maybe more specifically, what do you?
- 22:35Want. Jesus to do for you.
- 22:38How are you responding? To the change that God is
- 22:42inviting you into, because he is always inviting us into.
- 22:46Transformation. He's always inviting us to.
- 22:50Cooperate with His grace. He's always inviting us.
- 22:54To go deeper. With him and maybe today.
- 22:59You're you're looking at your life.
- 23:01And you know. That there are some.
- 23:03Things. That you wish were different
- 23:06things. You want to.
- 23:08See changed. Maybe, like Naman, you know what
- 23:13God has told you to do. You've been unwilling to do
- 23:18those things, maybe even because they seem too simple.
- 23:24Too easy, too basic. Maybe today you feel like Jesus
- 23:30is inviting you in to change. But that transformation.
- 23:34Feels like a disruption to the life that you've built for
- 23:37yourself. And like the townspeople, even
- 23:41though you see the evidence of what God could do.
- 23:44In a person's life, you're begging him to.
- 23:47Leave you alone because the disruption seems.
- 23:50Too great. Maybe today you're like Peter
- 23:56and you aren't particularly looking for a change.
- 23:59Life seems to be going just fine, thank you very much, and
- 24:04the change feels like it'll take you.
- 24:07Outside your comfort zone. You see where?
- 24:11God is. Leading you when?
- 24:13There's a reluctance. To give an unreserved yes to
- 24:18Jesus. Maybe today you know exactly
- 24:24what needs changing in your life.
- 24:27And like Bartimaeus, you know the power for change can.
- 24:30Never come from. Within yourself, but you're
- 24:34ready to name. That need.
- 24:37You're ready to. Trust Jesus can do something
- 24:40about it so you can follow Him as he goes on the way.
- 24:48Wherever you are today. I believe Jesus is asking you a
- 24:53question. What do you want me to?
- 24:57Do for you and he's waiting for our response.
- 25:07Would you? Name your need today.
- 25:13Would you trust that he can do something about it?
- 25:19Would you? Ask him to make you willing to
- 25:22do what he's. Already told you to do no matter
- 25:26how. Basic it seems.
- 25:29Or how? Simple, would you?
- 25:33Surrender your reluctance. Cooperate wholeheartedly with
- 25:38His Spirit working in you. Would you be willing to see?
- 25:43Transformation. Not as a.
- 25:45Disruption to your life? But as an invitation to.
- 25:49Walk. With Jesus, because friends.
- 25:54It's worth it, whatever God is. Asking of you, whatever.
- 26:00Opportunity for. Change and transformation he's
- 26:03presenting to you it's. Worth it?
- 26:08It may not be easy, It may not. Feel comfortable.
- 26:15It may seem too simplistic too. Basic.
- 26:20It's worth it. And while the cost?
- 26:26For change the. Cost for transformation may seem
