Latest / Skin Anarchy / Shaping Skincare’s Sustainability History with BABOR Co-CEO, Tim Waller
Transcript
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I remember um way before skincare anarchy started, I was always, you know, checking out their products.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Um, they really literally introduced me to the idea of like single-use um, you know, doses of skincare.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: And it was such a revolutionary time for me as a consumer to experience you know a skincare brand like that.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: So um I'm really excited to dive in.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: But without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the co-CEO of uh Babor Beauty Group, um, Tim Waller.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Tim.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited to host you.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Hey, Ecta.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Um uh likewise really appreciate speaking with you.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I've been excited and waiting for this day for quite some time now.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Um and and uh yeah, I just love talking about uh our brand and and um and glad to know that you've uh you've been a secret fan for quite some time.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I think we've been uh a bit of a a hidden uh gem and uh certainly making inroads and becoming uh more well known recently.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, no, absolutely.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: You guys are truly um a true gem in the industry, and I I cannot wait to learn all about the brand um from you, Tim.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: But I really want to start off the interview by learning about you and um you know just how you um you know moved into the co-CEO position at the company and uh tell us about yourself, if you could, um, just to get us started.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Um so I kind of uh came into the industry just because uh I thought it was a glamorous and very interesting uh field to work um a little over 20 years ago and uh did the the uh traditional track and uh started to work for the big ones.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I worked for L'Oreal for about seven years and moved transitioned to the Estee Lauder Companies.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Um worked there for about nine years in uh some international roles, and um yeah, ended up meeting my wife who lives in the United States and has kids, and so I needed to find a job um in the United States.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I was working at larger companies in in Europe before.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh Babor had an opening in uh in southern Florida, and this is uh how I actually got to run the US um and Canadian business for a couple of years, actually for five, six years.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then I was asked uh if I'm not interested in moving into the global role as that uh became free.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: That's so exciting.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, you know, I I can't imagine um being an international brand, I'm sure there's a lot of like traveling and stuff.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: So that's good to know that you were able to settle in, you know, in where where your family was.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: It's cool.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I I still go back and forth.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: So my let's say my uh my base actually uh job-wise is is in Aachen, Germany, and my family's still in in Miami, Florida.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So uh it's a bit tedious, but I travel, as you said, uh frequently and and uh where I make my stops really at this point doesn't matter because we are really focused on on expanding into a global player um from an international one that we've been so far.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and on that note, Tim, you know, uh Bapor for me has always been you know that brand.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Like I I know you guys said you guys were a hidden gem, you know, for a long time in the industry, but I I always viewed you as such a such a huge player because I mean what you what the brand was doing, you know, was so, like I said, for me, very novel, you know, with the MPULs and the way that the skincare was being delivered.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was as if I finally was coming into as a consumer, you know, uh it was like discovering the pharmaceutical kind of approach, you know, to OTC products.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I remember the first time I discovered the brand, and and you know, from that note, I immediately was like, yeah, they're really doing something that I haven't seen anyone else doing.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: And on that note, I want to ask you, you know, how did uh Babor start?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: And what's the real story behind the brand?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: You know, if you could walk us down that journey.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think it's a fantastic one, and it's one that's that's unique to us and and makes the brand into what it is.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And and maybe let's switch out the word hidden gem and move it into an underdog.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: We're certainly smaller than some of the big companies uh that I've mentioned before, but that doesn't make us any less uh potent or powerful.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And and I think everything stems uh in its origin, right?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: We were founded by a German biochemist, Dr.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Michael Babor, um, almost 70 years ago in 1956.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And he was really interested in natural ingredients um married with science and the um relationship between um you know water, your skin, and and uh skincare products.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And he developed an oil cleanser in 1955 that was patented in his kitchen in Cologne.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And uh he was a brilliant scientist, but he needed a partner in business.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And so the current owning family, uh the Vossen family, came out of the pharmaceutical field um and invested into the company in the early 60s.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And this is where you have the background, exactly what you said, is marrying the pharmaceutical background, the single-dose ampules, um, with skincare.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: So we feel that we've always been pioneering in skincare, whether it's with our first patented oil cleansing system or with the ampules and many, many other innovations that we've uh marketed in our almost 70 years uh in market.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that I mean that's so interesting that you guys are you're a very old company then in the sense that you've been around for a long time and basically seen it all, you know.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: So that that makes sense to me, you know, as a consumer, because you when we when I was discovering you, it's always like the the brand is always ahead of its time.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: That's what it feels like, you know?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Um it always felt like it was um something very well thought out, very um much ahead of its time, ahead of the game.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, in in that regard, I I really want to know, you know, you mentioned a little bit about the science, but what was, you know, from the science perspective, you know, where where was that um inflection point for the brand if you can uh give us a little insight into, you know, when you were coming into market and and what you wanted to bring to the scene, you know, what did you guys always know that this is how it was going to be presented?
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: But what was the journey is really what I'm asking.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: You know, I think the journey has always been marrying science and nature, really the power of natural ingredients has been something and respecting the skin.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: So we've always looked at what we call it maximum skin compatibility, respecting um the skin barrier, the skin microbiome.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And and uh we feel that sustainable skincare is is really also um preventing aging in the long run, right?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Some some of the harsher um uh treatments could could essentially also at times speed up aging.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Um and the the journey that we took and that we chose to go to market was the professional skincare channels.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So we really came from the experts, so spas, the European Cosmetic Institutes.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, but we are we were also prescribed um by doctors already since the inception of the company, um with the scientific approach that we had.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: So I would say um this is the journey, and and today we define it as the trinity uh of bar, which kind of combines all these different things that we've been about since inception, and we've just kind of put it into words recently, and and really it combines um the high performance that that we always strive for, so maximum results with the high skin compatibility, together with the luxury experience, the sensorial feel of like a luxury uh spa skin line.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And and that is always done in the most uh mindful or sustainable way.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: And so these the sustainability, luxury, and the performance together is something that we feel is unique to the brand.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, on that note about sustainability, I'd love for you to tell us a little bit about some of the initiatives that the company took on to to really kind of uh you know push this forward.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Because I think sustainability, you know, I'm sure Tim, you've seen it, you know, in the industry, I feel like there's a lot of very meaningful words that mean different things to different people, you know.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: And I think with uh with brands such as uh yours, like I I think you guys are really paving the path in these in that way.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, setting an industry standard is very important when it comes to certain terminologies, and sustainability is definitely one of those terms in my book.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And I would love to hear, you know, what is the um definition of sustainability for you guys for us, most most and foremost, it's something that's in our DNA and it always has been, right?
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: We were founded as a biomedical skincare company in 1956, and we've always looked at respecting the planet and being mindful to planet and people.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Um and and so it's been a journey for us, to be honest.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: We've been ahead of the curve at times.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Um just in 1990, we we launched our first refillable system at a time when nobody cared about it and obviously was not a market success.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Um, and and especially looking at the professional uh industry when you know it's not a uh we didn't have vast distribution, and and you also have to look at where you recycle or refill your jars.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: So um so we've done things because we thought they were right, not because we thought they were a story that would resonate with the consumer and sometimes at the detriment uh to financial success.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: But um uh what it is now for us is you know, we started to look at what everybody looks at.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: So we've been producing, so we've been producing carbon neutral since 20 uh 2014, and actually our entire operations was carbon neutral since 2020.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And we're extremely proud to have been able to achieve this um well ahead of our um aggressive targets, and also in a challenging year like uh uh like the COVID uh you know outbreak, um, that really took a toll, and we were still able to be mindful uh to the business.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Um but that isn't all for us, right?
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: So just looking at the carbon footprint is is not enough for us.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: So we look at at um formulating clean and sustainable formulations.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Um we're looking at also other impact that our production, our products can have on the environment.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and so we've done a thorough analysis or still in the process of completing it with all of our products, um looking at formulation and packaging and and what goes into each product in terms of the footprint.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And we're not only looking at um at uh carbon, so we're looking at um we're looking at soil, water, and air.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and so there's impacts that you can have in producing um skincare that you wouldn't think of.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So there would be a nutrient-enriched water system that has a negative impact or um uh enhanced uh acidity um in the soil.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And none of these things are are positive to the environment, so we monitor those.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Um and uh we look to in the future formulate to minimize these impacts.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Uh that's what we yeah, I think the the the one thing when we talk about sustainability, however, that um is is super important and is really showing uh how it's deeply rooted in our DNA is our new production facility.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Um we call it the Barber Beauty Cluster, but what it really is is a almost fully electric um carbon neutral facility um using no fossil fuels.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Um and and it's really the the uh target of the facility is to be energy self-sufficient um by 2030.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Um so we currently have a very massive photovoltaic system and we work together with uh um you know second life carb, you know, EV car batteries in in a storage cube that stores uh solar energy um so that we can use it when it's not so sunny.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Um and uh you know, we're um we're we're capturing carbon emissions out of the atmosphere around our plant as a as a test.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: And so we're really proud of this facility.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Obviously, it's the highest investment that the company's ever done, and it's a true testament of how deeply committed we are to sustainable ways of business and manufacturing.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: That is so amazing.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: How long did that take to build, Tim?
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think the planning process is is been more than 10 years.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: So the company has been actually uh very visionary um creating uh this this this project.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Actually, when we started to look and plan it, a lot of the technologies didn't even exist yet.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And we've pushed the architects and engineers um really uh to pioneer also in their spaces.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Um and uh the decision to actually build, believe it or not, was was done in 2020, uh when when most companies probably would not have made a significant investment decision um that's on the on the high double-digit millions.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Um and and so I think this just shows the confidence in the future of the of of the business um as as as well as the commitment to doing uh well uh or doing good for the environment.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: That's really cool.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Um I'm really happy to hear that that is something that's baked into the DNA of your brand is this idea of keeping such technical aspects at, you know, uh in mind, you know, and at the forefront.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Because I think, you know, for me, Tim, like I look at the industry and I see that there is a movement right now towards sustainability.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: And I think for a few years there has been, but sometimes I get lost because I think that's why I'd asked you the question the way I did, because I really do believe that sustainability means different things to different brands.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I just see some people hitting just missing that mark, you know, because unwantingly they're creating more pop plastic, you know, and that's where I think uh Babber really stands out to me because the individual MPLs, the fact that, you know, they're glass, they're not, it's just a different feel, you know.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: It feels like as a consumer that I'm I'm actually practicing sustainability as I'm using the brand.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: And I think there's a lot to be said about that experience, you know, from the consumer side is that when a brand really pours that into their actual products and their the thought process has been put in, you as a consumer will feel that you're practicing sustainability.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: So I think I think that's where I I really love you guys' approach.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And I I am really glad to hear that everything has really been thought out from your hand and it it continues to be thought out.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I'd almost want to go back to to to a bit more on you know, kind of that that entire sustainability piece because there's just so many things that we do, and you know, we're able to do it because you know we're a family business and our family owner our owning family is looking into future-proofing the company and and you know creating a legacy for generations.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: But you know, we have all these things, you know, we have a barbare forest that is uh a biodiverse uh ecosystem, uh, home to bee colonies, and you know, all the things that would be a great marketing story.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: We we we do all these things, and we but I think what's the real tedious work and what's not always being appreciated, and I think you mentioned some of those, is really reducing waste, reducing plastic um in the process, making sure that products are recyclable, right?
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Because there's a very strict European standard of what's considered recyclable.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: So you basically need uh monomaterials that um a machine can grab and identify as and recycle.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: And um and this creates some challenges.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And um we're we're going the extra mile, and it's you know, it's not always fun, and it's a challenge for the teams to create uh you know a luxury packaging that is sustainable.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Um I think we're we're just uh you know in early stages of that journey as as more and more materials become available.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's it's something that that is is deeply rooted in our DNA.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: And we just um I mean we're on that path and we're not questioning it for sure.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: That's really that's really, really nice to hear.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: And it's I think it it's going to take you guys a long way.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I think the the fight for sustainability is definitely not going to end anytime soon.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: And I think we definitely need more brands that can be pillars, you know, in that space.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Because I like I said, I think, you know, setting these definitions as an industry is so important.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: It's like having benchmarks, you know, to look at and say, you know what, this is a really great way to do it.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And I could do it like that too.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: And especially if you're like, for example, like you know, small brands that come out every day.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: There's uh there needs to be some guidance right there.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: And I think um brands such as you know, Babor, like you guys have been around, you've seen it, you've seen what's going on.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: And for you to, you know, do the things that you're doing and approach it the way you are, it's it's also setting a standard that is then gonna be followed by I think a lot of indie brands that come out, you know, afterwards.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm a huge fan.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: I think you're really killing it in that space.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Um and you know, I want to actually shift gears a little bit and talk about the actual science and the and the amazing ingredients, you know, that are in your products because um another huge draw-in for me as a consumer was that the products really work.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: You know, they're like jam-packed with just good science and it really just reflects as soon as you start utilizing them.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: And for everyone listening, you know, um as soon as you guys dive into the line, you will notice that, you know, you have options for hyaluronic acid.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: Like whatever your skin concerns are, you're able to then really target them.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: And I think that's something that makes you guys stand out to me a lot in this current state that we're in, because there are so many um options right now that mix too many things together.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: You know, they don't give people the um, I guess, the freedom to understand what their skin needs and then let me go and approach the ingredients that I will need.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: So, you know, Tim, I want to ask you from that standpoint, what was the approach from the RD perspective?
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: You know, when when the initial products were being crafted or as you are crafting your products now, you know, what is that approach that your RD team takes towards bringing um new innovations out to market um when it comes to what consumers need and and whatnot?
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: I I think it's an excellent question.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: I think the uh the the real foundation of that is that uh we're an expert brand, right?
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: And we are founded to service the aestheticians, the dermatologists, the surgeons, uh, and take care of their patients and guests' skin.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: And so we have over 100,000 experts around the world that rely on Barbour to transform their guests and patients' skin.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: So we needed to be able to treat any skin condition that you could treat with a cosmetic product.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, so yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: And so the the you know, we have a relatively vast product offering, right?
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: We have over 300 retail SKUs in our assortment, uh, not counting our makeup line.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: And and that's just because we believe that you know each skin is as individual as a person's fingerprint.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: And you know, this means that that with our experts, we we really believe in analyzing skin and putting the right combination of the right product on the right skin.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's we need that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: That's that and it makes sense that you what you said, that you're gearing it towards the professionals because that is what you look for.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: As a doctor, I can say, you know, you we never look at things as like, what's the mixed-up solution that I can buy, you know, off the bat.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: You're looking for the exact thing that you need, and and that's how we approach, you know, pharmaceuticals, you know.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: So I can see uh how that would really resonate with the professionals, you know, out here in the space.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: It's very cool.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And I and I I think we've been we've been true to this path um again since the inception and and always trying to combine you know the scientific basis, um and and and really looking obviously as new trends emerge, um we have our entire value chain uh in-house, right?
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: We own everything from you know, we we source, we research, we manufacture um everything here in in Germany.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: And so it's really easy for us to look at what's coming and and and be at the forefront of of that science that's available for skincare.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And you know, I I completely agree.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: I feel like um Germany is just for me, has always been that hub of uh technology, you know, especially in the medical space.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: You know, I I remember even in my residency, I was very fortunate to have a mentor.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: He was um He was German and he was practicing in the US and he told me that, you know, when I was training, we had all sorts of devices that you guys don't even know about yet, you know, and it was it was so cool to hear him say that.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: And ever since then, I've always appreciated the technology that comes out of Germany because it seems to always be this one step forward, you know.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: And I think as a brand, when I look at you guys as a skincare brand, it's never just as like a skincare brand.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: I am all that's why I said like pharmaceutical in the early on in the episode, because it is that merger between that feeling of good pharmaceutical and truly good OTC products, you know, and it's it's very rare to find that combination and to find something that is working as if you went to a dermatologist or a doctor and they gave you something very specific that is, you know, not readily available, right, right?
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Usually to everybody.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: But, you know, that that's what I think makes you really stand out is that technology.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And on that note, I want to learn um, you know, is there any interesting biotech in your products that we could uh learn about as consumers?
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Because I know right now biotech is really buzzing and the whole industry is talking about it.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, we have a couple of of stories of that, but I think there's um we don't necessarily go for biotech because it's it's buzzing right now and we feel like we need to do something in biotech.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Uh we always look at what's the right solution for uh any given product.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: And um, and so we have um, you know, one of the key components in in our spa bodyline is um is an ingredient, is a service berry here um from a local region, but it's it's rather strenuous to the environment to extract.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: And so we ended up making um uh a biotech lab derived version of it so that we you know no longer deplete the environment.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: And uh and we actually have a little plantation of that ingredient now in our bour forest uh that you know that where we're planting trees uh uh every year, and it's kind of a company outing.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: So I think that that's uh something where we'd say, okay, we we use a targeted approach to um for biotech, but uh we also have some really, really powerful just plant-based um um extracts.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Um and one was actually still created by Dr.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Michael Babor in the early stages of the company.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: It's one of our still most powerful ingredients to date, and it's called the biogen plant extract.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: It's really when you look at the uh the components, it's eight um uh homeopathic herbal essences, and the way that they're they're formulated together um just make it a super powerful 360-degree kind of um, yeah, let's say superhero in skincare.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: It's um from skin regeneration, uh cell turnover, skin texture, sebum control.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Um it's it's really a superhero ingredient, and we're getting ready to launch that as a heritage ingredient with with a relaunch of our Dr.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Babbo range uh as an homage to Dr.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Michael Babor next year.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, that's very exciting.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm very curious to see what's in that range.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like, yeah, I mean, like I said, you know, he he definitely knew what he was doing because you guys are very much ahead of your time, I think.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: And um, even as something like, you know, for example, the the Hydra Plus um serum is one of my favorites.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: It's really, really great for hydration.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: And, you know, there are just these Hallmark products in your line that I think everybody could benefit from.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: You know, I think um when I look out into the landscape of skincare and skin health right now, I see a lot of consumers confused about what is wrong with my skin, right?
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: And it's it's always this battle of what should I buy?
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Where should I go to get these like best ingredients or what whatever, you know, but really what it comes down to sometimes is the the key hallmarks like hydration.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: And, you know, not all hydration products are made equal.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: You know, that's the truth of it.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: And I think um when I, for example, when I, you know, discovered the lion, I was really using it.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: Um, that is one thing that stood out for me was that the products they deeply hydrate your skin in the right way to where it's not just something that you're you know, slathering on your face and then hoping that it works.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: It's no, it's like a deeper level of hydration that I was getting um with this, for example, this product alone.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: I was getting that feeling of now my skin feels rejuvenated, you know, it feels like it's doing better.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: And I think that mess, like that feeling, it resonates throughout the product.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: So, you know, every product is like that, you know, and that's why I I was actually saying for everyone listening earlier is that you can go onto the website, you know, and shop for what you need.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: And it's going to do what you need it to do.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: That's the beauty of the brand, I think.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's what makes you guys to me, Tim, really stand out, you know, in the in that sense where if you're somebody who needs a brightening, you know, serum, you can have it.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: We we have I guarantee you need something, we have it.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and we sometimes have it in ways that you you wouldn't necessarily think that we're addressing it, right?
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: So we're not always addressing acne with uh with acids, etc.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we believe in in the long-term um control of the skin uh situation, and and you know, more isn't always more when it comes to that because harsh ingredients can damage the skin.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: So we we were very targeted.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Um, and we have a beautiful line in the US that's called calming RX that works with microsilver and a component called neuroxyl.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Microsilver is antibacterial, antifungal, it's it's just a beautiful ingredient that's very calming and and soothing to the skin, but it also has a side effect of, for example, um fighting off uh acne and blemishes, right?
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Um so there's cool things, but if you talked about one of our bestsellers, the Hydro Plus ampul, right?
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And we we love ampules, and this is one that's very water-like and really can penetrate deep into the skin.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: If you love hydration, then then I um I'm gonna have to send you our new um Dr.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Bob or power serum ampules.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and that one has an eight-dimensional hyaluronic acid.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Um, so really formulate it so that that each of the different molecule sizes and linkages um target different areas in the skin and really penetrate deep.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Um, so if if if you love uh really hydrated and plump skin, this is the one for you.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: It's by the way, one of my favorites, and and it's the base of our philosophy is that you have to have nourished skin uh to go to the next uh topic to treat.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: So if you have dehydrated skin, or you know, there's no point to look at anti-aging uh with more complex um components.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So we really start with hydrating the skin and then move on to the next logical step.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: Kind of like you said, like in science, like at a doctor, um, we really look at a very targeted prescription.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm gonna have to try that for sure because yeah, I'm all about hydration.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: I think I was reading some sort of an article a while ago where it said literally, if you hydrate your skin, you can get rid of almost any skin ailment.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it was uh written by I believe a dermatologist, and you know, it was really great, you know, very eye-opening.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And I think, you know, that's what I mean is that you can get that, you know, and that's where I think consumers, like I've if anybody gave me the power, I would keep directing people towards this approach of go where the science is, you know what I mean?
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Like go where the brands are that are doing the science.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: And and that's where I kind of want to ask you about this, Tim, because I know I'm sure a lot of you know time goes into formulating your product.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: So on average, if you were to tell us like how long does it take when you guys are coming up with like a new product or you know, trying to come up with it, come out with a new product um in the line, how long does that RD process usually take on average?
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Honestly, I I kind of want to give you um like it can take it can be quick, um, but if we really look for something groundbreaking, it can be two years, five years, it could be longer.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, but but really on average, let's say two years is a good ballpark.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Um but we've we've recently been working on a clean version of kind of an um uh let's say an ointment, uh so a wound-healing ointment.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: And usually these are packed with mineral oils um and and synthetic polymeres.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: And to do this clean in a luxury version that also has a calming effect, uh just has taken a little bit of extra time.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: We're gonna launch this product hopefully in the spring of next year.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: But uh we're super proud of doing that.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's that's really cool.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to see it.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that makes sense though.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: It takes you guys a couple of years because I know that you know, RD must it takes a long time, you know, the testing and all that.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: So that's why I asked, like, you know, a lot of times people assume that product, you know, there are a lot of times you see products coming out immediately.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: A brand will launch, and then you see bam, 10 products came out, and it just makes you wonder like how much time went into this?
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Like, did someone really think about what they're creating?
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: So it makes me feel better as a consumer, knowing that you guys really do take your time and and I mean it shows in the products.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: So we we certainly we certainly put in our time, and and I I alluded earlier to the fact that we're relaunching our Dr.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Babboard range, and and what we're doing basically is um we we have um a promise that we made or a sustainability target of launching uh you know clean formulations fully clean to our clean standard, which is far above the the European directive um by 2025.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: And so it's a necessity for us to really look at everything closely.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Most of our stuff is already much cleaner than the European directive, but you know, the thing that that makes formulations uh you know kind of feel silky smooth and melt into your skin often are are uh synthetic polymeres.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: Um and um it's hard to do a luxury skin line with that luxury sensorial um uh yeah feeling that um without these synthetic polymeres.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: And uh we've been able to find a way to do that in several kind of base formulations, and uh that also took extra time.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: We were scheduled ideally to launch this year, but we've had to postpone it and and you know we're gonna be launching it um throughout all of next year and maybe some some of 2025 because it's just taking a little bit longer to solve the problem that we look to solve.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: And rather than taking a compromise on product quality, um we're just pushing out the launch dates.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, it's better to be done perfectly, you know, than uh done before it needs to be.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm glad that you guys have taken so much time, you know, with every single launch.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: That's very important for I think a lot of consumers, especially I've noticed, you know, since I've launched this podcast, honestly, Tim, I've noticed that consumers are just so much more um science savvy now.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Like they're so interested in like they want to know, you know, how much time does it take?
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Why do you, you know, why do you need this kind of uh hyaluronic acid versus the other?
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: And so I think that time is well spent.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And I think all of the people out there that really value good um, you know, skincare products that are actually rooted in um true medicine and clinical studies and and all that good stuff, like they value that.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: And so I'm I'm happy to hear that.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: And one of my questions though, and I know this is kind of a it's an interesting place we're at right now, I think, as an industry where we're now seeing all these different generations come into this place of wanting to better their skin, start at an earlier age, right?
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: With like taking care of themselves.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: And I I guess my question for you is more of like, I guess, a marketing question, um, where how has Babor like approached the new generation?
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Because we, as you know, there's so many people right now on like TikTok, Reddit, you know, everywhere that are just they're new consumers, you know, they're they're new to the skincare space.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: So how how have you guys really approached that?
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Um the messaging there, you know, getting to them and making them understand what you're bringing to the table and and why it's different.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm gonna have to circle back and give you a little bit of of of more context rather than just saying how we're addressing the messaging, right?
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Because um our brand as it is, obviously um just our by the nature of the distribution that we were born into, let's put it that way, is is a a brand that's not necessarily you know started or just geared towards the TikTok generation, right?
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: So we are um addressing really skin as skin being individual, like I said before.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Um so from a product standpoint, you know, we're looking at addressing skin needs and skin concerns, uh, no matter what origin, uh color, age, uh, race, anything.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Um we really have an all-inclusive approach to skin.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: Um and and and we try to demonstrate that.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: When it comes to how do we address uh messaging across channels, um I've been obsessed with um before and afters for many, many years when it became big in in makeup.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: And we feel that that being able to show this this dramatic skin transformation is something that that um uh uh hasn't really been effectively done in skincare yet.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: And we've just launched a campaign this year that is called My Skin, My Story.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: It's really about real skin, real people, and and showing their um uh experience and and you know their journey with skin problems and our way of helping and treating them.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: And uh that's that's been really, really powerful.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know what makes Barbour stand out is that we don't have five of these stories, um but we have uh hundreds, and we're in the process of producing these.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: So I I want to give you maybe a couple of these examples.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Um one that I personally actually I came across two while I was managing the US business, and um and and one was uh that uh there was uh one of our our spa's um customers, and she had um really dramatic cystic acne and uh had been to the dermatologist, etc., and gotten all the the harsh um prescriptions that that that we all know.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: And uh our partner has treated her with uh a combination of treatments, peels, and take-home care that have been able to fully eliminate the acne problem.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Um that consumer now became an aesthetician, started to work at that spa, and even better, um, a few years in, created her own business and now is running her own spa.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: So these are some of the powerful stories that uh that we were able to show with Bob.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Or by the way, I I showed these results to our labs um what when I first encountered this.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: And you know, I was like, guys, we have to do something with this.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: And they were like, Well, this is normal.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Uh it's just not normal where I where I came from.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: So I I thought that was cute, and this is a bit of the German way of doing things.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, we we we just do it, and uh you know, we we're not so loud of claiming it, but it uh the stuff, like you said, it works.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: And I want to give an another one, and and we feature those on our website, so anybody that wants to look into it, it's called MySkin My Story on Bobar.com.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: But it's um so a spa director um uh was on his way to work with his bicycle in Miami and and he had an almost fatal accident.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I didn't hear from him for a while because I didn't really understand what happened.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, he had massive scarring throughout, you know, over his whole body.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: And he used a Bob or repair cream with the biogen plant extract that I was talking about earlier on one side of the body on his scars, and uh and uh just nothing on the other side with regular, I guess, moisturizer or so on.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, the one side of the scars is pretty much healed, and uh you can barely see them, and the other side are black scars, they're still very visible.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: So, so these kind of stories.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: We I I could tell you we have, like I said, hundreds and hundreds, and we're gonna be publishing these uh throughout the next years as one of our key initiatives and strategic campaigns going forward.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, you must publish them.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: I know that it's it's uh normal for your lab, but it's not normal for us consumers to hear such a success story.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: That's I can tell you it wasn't normal for me, and and you know, I just the same with sustainability, you know.
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: They were saying, okay, this is just how you do business.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: And so that there's just a normalcy of doing things right.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: And I think this is what the company has been always about, and and this is what we continue to be about.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you guys are normalizing amazing, amazing products.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: That's I mean, that's that's so cool though.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, that that really blew me away to hear that.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: That someone was inspired by their skincare healing journey, and then they did something, you know, to reflect that in their own.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: That's huge.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, that there's not there's no way to pay homage to something that really revolutionizes like the way you see yourself, than to to you know, experience something like that and then go and do something about it in your own life.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: And that so that's huge.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, no matter who hears that, I think they would resonate with that.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: That's that's a really great you know, to see it on your own body and to see the transition and the transformation and the power of you know this holistic approach to skin, by the way, which isn't just putting product on skin, but is really looking at skin in a holistic way, um, you know, with treatments.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: And you know, we're also starting to look in our labs on kind of the impact and the the the gut-skin axis, basically the impact of your digestive system on skin or uh something similar with the you know your moods and and and and your um yeah your mental state um and and what it does to skin healing and and and skin.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: So we're really looking at kind of a holistic approach to healthy skin.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: Again, you guys are ahead of your time.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, that is the next like frontier, you know, with uh any anything, whether that's in medicine, OTC products, whatever.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: I have this conversation on the daily with like my colleagues, you know, um in the clinical realm, where it's like, you know, I wish more people in general, right?
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Whether that's um in the OTC space or in our in the medical space or wherever, people would start looking at the body as a unit, right?
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: Rather than just individual and um, you know, like individualized just organs.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: It's all connected.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: And so um it's very important what you said, you know, that that skin to gut access, the the mind-body connection, all of that matters.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: And you know what's crazy, Tim, is that we see it every day with like, you know, for example, like I worked with very critically ill patients, and I think it's easier to see it there because they're, you know, it's always changing, you know, their state.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and but it on a daily level as consumers, like something like what you had explained with the success story, like seeing your acne disappear, you know, or heal is a huge thing, you know, for you mentally.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Like what your mind goes through when it sees that happen, and when when, you know, uh consumers, when we see our skin is improving from what we've done, it's a very powerful thing.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: And that is so tied to so much tied to the rest of your health, you know, in so many ways.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: And I think I really believe in that.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: So to hear you guys say that as a brand is it's so promising for me because I I genuinely believe that that is where, as just people, we need to be in that direction of holistic thinking.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: We need to go in that route because there's not gonna be more innovation until we embrace that, you know, that holistic culture and understanding that everything is tied together.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: And no matter what, we're gonna have to address this concern, you know, from the from all angles.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: So I I love that.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad that you guys are doing that and you're at the forefront of that.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: We feel it's super important and and we certainly have no taboo when it comes to to skin and skin health.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: And and I think you know, what's really important for this holistic approach is is is the treatment.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, we are an expert brand and we really believe in the power of the treatment.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, we're we've been um so we created something that we call the barber expert method, which is our treatment system.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: Um and it's really a combination of kind of six um yeah, let's say super well-known massage and health therapies, you know, ranging from the KNIP um therapy with you know hot and cold induced um uh compressed techniques, which really allows the the you know the skin to metabolize uh ingredients better, etc.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: We've been using reflexology um uh you know for many, many decades in our treatment uh methods, same as lymphatic drainage and and traditional Chinese met uh uh medicine pressure points.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Massages and so on.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: So I just wanted to say that we have all these holistic uh components and we've been doing them for decades.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: And uh I I think the results just uh just show.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Wow, I mean that's really, really it's very promising, you know, and and I'm really excited to see what you guys bring to the table and for the whole industry to really look look at as a shining example because I mean we need that.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: I I really see it every day.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I'm just so excited that you're doing it and that you guys are thinking um ahead in this way because it's it's very much needed and it's something that I think a lot of this is how change happens.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: If you were to ask me, people always say, you know, what is the catalyst for change?
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: And I think at at some point someone has to just grab the bowl by its forms and do it, right?
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: It's like it's not so much about like talking about it, it's about actually showing that it things can be done and you can approach things in a different way.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: And I think holistic medicine, holistic healing is the next way to do it.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: And it it has to be.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: So I I love that you guys are doing it.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: I'm a huge fan.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: I've been a huge fan of the brand, and um, everything that you shared here has just made me fall in love even more with the whole, you know, the whole line and everything that you guys are doing.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: Um, but one question I do have for you before we go, and um, it it's really about you know, if professionals want to work with you as a brand, what can they do?
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: Like what do they reach out to you guys and just um work with your team, or how does that whole process come together if you're like an aesthetician or a dermatologist?
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you're if you're a dermatologist, we we do have uh a concierge hotline either via email on our website or or or phone, and and you know, we'd we'd uh really love to reach out.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: My team's very engaged in in vetting these these inquiries and calls and and um and and usually very quick to uh to turn around.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: So um I think we can we can give the um the email and the number um maybe to the um which by the way I'd have to look up.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's fine.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: I I I was just wondering if there's like a streamline way to do it.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: Uh but but but yeah, no, we're excited um uh obviously to work uh with with aestheticians and and and doctors and and are constantly looking at uh at who's relevant and and at the forefront and and and matches our philosophy.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: That's really great.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: And for everyone listening, I know we have a lot of uh germs and uh aestheticians and professionals that listen in.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: So if you are somebody who's interested, definitely um look into it because this is such a such an amazing brand, and I cannot rave about you guys enough, Tim.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: I really, really love everything you guys are doing, and I'm a huge fan.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: And I think on a closing note, I would love to for to hear your advice to any um, you know, budding entrepreneurs or anyone um who is in the executive space in the skincare or beauty industry, any advice you have, because I know that you've really, you know, um you're an international brand.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: So I'm sure there have been many challenges in the you know in the road that's led up to now, and any advice you have for um the people listening in?
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, absolutely.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: I think the the key is is never to compromise uh on quality.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: I think if you're an entrepreneur in the skincare uh industry, I think it's really important that trust isn't built overnight and it's not going to be a quick win.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: Uh it really takes time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears, and we've all felt that.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: And for anybody to come in and think that in this very um saturated and and kind of hard-fought uh uh skincare industry, it's an easy uh win because there's a new story or something is is probably going to be disappointed.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: So I really think quality is key because that really uh creates repurchase and loyalty, and and this is certainly what we've seen.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: Our our repurchase rates are through the roof, to be honest.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: Um and uh if you're looking for uh somebody to formulate uh good skincare, we're always happy to help.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: We do have a private label division that does formulate for some indie brands uh throughout the world.
