- 0:00So Wednesday thirteen, vocalist of Murder Dolls and Wednesday thirteen, beautiful mate Hay
- 0:08doing today. I'm good, I'm good. Good to talk to you again,
- 0:12my friend. So you're returning to Australia next February for a special tour
- 0:18where you'll be performing Murder Dolls songs from the albums Beyond the Value of the
- 0:22Murder Dolls and Women and Children Last. But I don't know about you,
- 0:25mate, but I'm already excited and I'll be looking forward to something like this
- 0:28for years. Uh me too, I'm excited. I didn't realize that,
- 0:35you know that people were this is passionate about about the music. I mean,
- 0:44I know they liked it, but it's just it's just great to see
- 0:46that it's, you know, twenty one years later. There's still the old
- 0:50fans, but there's this whole new generation of young fans that have been dying
- 0:54for it as well. So it's just a it's just a great reaction.
- 0:58We're in the middle of a US tour now and it is nothing but fun
- 1:03just going out playing these songs that we're doing a full hour, forty five
- 1:07minute set, playing twenty songs off both Records, thirteen off the first album,
- 1:11the rest off the second, and it's just been a complete blast every
- 1:17single night. And I cannot wait to bring it to Australia and see the
- 1:22madness that it will create there. It's just it's I can't wait. Oh
- 1:26yeah. And before announcing these soors earlier this year, mate, you hadn't
- 1:30played any Murder Gold songs in over a decade, So what made you decide
- 1:34to revisit them now? Well, I've I mean, there are Murdered Doll
- 1:40songs scattered in the Wednesday thirteen set list, like I love to say the
- 1:44fuck has been like a staple in my set list nineteen seventy six sixty six.
- 1:49There are several songs that have kind of switched in and out over the
- 1:53years. But the main thing that started this unfortunate was the passing of Joey
- 2:02and last year when I was touring and I was sort of doing a celebration
- 2:07of my twenty years of history, including Murder Dolls and Wednesday thirteen stuff,
- 2:13and uh, there's a part of the set where I we played four or
- 2:17five Murder Doll songs and I did a little story about Joey and I whatever,
- 2:22And it was after the shows everyone was like, you know, I've
- 2:25never heard murdered doll songs like that. You should do a full set like
- 2:29this, and you know, now that Joey's past, it'd be a great
- 2:31thing. And I'm like, you're right, you're right, You're right,
- 2:34You're right. And it was just hearing it over and over every night,
- 2:38and I realized this, why why shouldn't we do it? It's perfect time
- 2:43to do it, and uh, you know, and also it was a
- 2:46it was a healing thing for me, and I think it's a healing thing
- 2:50for the fans. A lot of people didn't get to go to a concert
- 2:54and and and celebrate something like that and have someone you know, I mean,
- 3:00the whole concert isn't all about talking about Joey. There's a part where
- 3:02I talk about him. I talk about Ben Graves as well, and but
- 3:07you know, for people to come out and hear those songs, some people
- 3:09have never even got to hear them ever live. So to hear that and
- 3:13also have a little memorial tribute thing to to Joey, it's there's there's it's
- 3:19the best of all worlds with it. So so yeah, it's uh,
- 3:22it's it's been fun and I know that Australia tour is going to be something
- 3:25to remember. So what can fans actually expect from the shows? Made Like
- 3:30there's probably quite a few people who haven't seen Medals before, Like I remember
- 3:34from seeing you when he came out for the big day out. I think
- 3:36it's as much a visual show as it is a sonic show, isn't it.
- 3:39Yeah, I mean I think what Murdered Dolls did well was just we
- 3:45carried an attitude with us that was with the music and not necessarily it was
- 3:52I mean, we had our image whatever that was, uh, and that's
- 3:54pretty much was the stage show. We were the stage show, the energy,
- 4:00the look, the dreadlocks, the black and red, it was.
- 4:05It worked and we really didn't need a whole lot more gimmicks than that.
- 4:10Of course I pulled out the umbrella and the brush my teeth on stage like
- 4:14pee wee Herman. But yeah, this was you know, that's that's kind
- 4:19of what we what we did. So went to do this tour and to
- 4:24go back and revisit these songs. The main thing that I wanted to focus
- 4:29one hundred percent was make sure these songs sounded justice with the albums everything like
- 4:35drumming wise, I told my drummer who's a huge Joey fan as well,
- 4:41and just I was like, do it justice, do these songs? Play
- 4:44these songs the way Joey played the drums and he is and you know,
- 4:48guitar everything. I want the vocal and want everything to be because this is
- 4:53twenty one years in the making for some people never got to hear it.
- 4:55I want them to come to the show and I want it to be everything
- 4:58they wanted and more. It's it's not murder Dolls. It's Wednesday thirteen playing
- 5:01murder Dolls. And it can't be murder Dolls without without Joey beside me.
- 5:05And that's why I can't or don't want to call it murder Dolls, because
- 5:09that was that was He was the thing. This is a tribute to the
- 5:13music, and it also is a tribute to him and Ben and uh it's
- 5:15it's been a blast so far, and I'm glad I get to take it
- 5:18around the world and uh see a reaction the same way in other places,
- 5:23so I know it's going to be a really important tour and special for a
- 5:27lot of people, including including us. I'm not sure if I've told you
- 5:30this before, but I've chatted before, mate, But I actually had Die
- 5:33my Bride as my wedding song. I got married walking down the aisle.
- 5:36I had that plane and like she had, her family was on that side
- 5:40of the room. My mates are on that side, and my mates are
- 5:42all going, fuck me. He said he was going to do it,
- 5:44and her family's all like, oh my god, what is she marry an
- 5:47inch? That's great, man, that's I think you did tell me that
- 5:51before. That's cool. I've several people have gotten married to that song,
- 5:57I think around the world, and that's crazy. Need to think that I
- 6:00wrote that song literally ten minutes from where I'm standing right now in my parents'
- 6:04bedroom. That was that song was written in nineteen ninety seven. You know,
- 6:12that's how long that song goes back. So it's just crazy to know
- 6:15that there's people around the world have embraced it like yourself and and may get
- 6:19part of their of their world. You know, we actually break up before
- 6:23eight pm on that night, So I'm not sure if that was his song.
- 6:28Hey, hey, you know it is what it is. So go
- 6:34back to the start of Maude and I was broad let. You started with
- 6:36Joey back in two thousand and two, so what was your early vision for
- 6:40the band? Was it just getting together with your mate and having a bit
- 6:43of fun or did you just sort of did you want to do something more?
- 6:46That's really all it was. It was how I mean it happened so
- 6:50fat People will ask all the time, like, I mean you could look
- 6:54at the band and you could if you didn't know anything about it, you
- 6:57could guess and say, oh, I bet they worked on that for a
- 7:00couple of years and it took him a while to craft that. No,
- 7:03it was literally fly by the seat of your pants. Now now now what
- 7:09are we doing. Luckily, when we started the band and Joey and I
- 7:14met, we looked very similar, you know, the the way we dressed.
- 7:17Joey had black hair, I had red and black dreadlocks. It was
- 7:21just like. And then when we put the band together, the live band
- 7:25together, and we brought in Eric and Ben, we picked them out of
- 7:30we saw photos of them and then we were like, oh, let's send
- 7:31us a video. So we picked We picked the band because we knew we
- 7:35wanted a band that looked like something between the sex pistols and Motley Cruze shouted
- 7:45the devil and that's what our image. And other than that, it was
- 7:48just that look and the music. And we didn't really have to work on
- 7:54the image that much because when we met Ben and Eric they looked like that.
- 7:57They looked like that during the day. We looked like this during the
- 8:00day. We just put on a little more makeup. We were just we
- 8:03were already half dressed. We just and that was the fun thing about it.
- 8:05It really wasn't a lot of thought, and we made stuff up on
- 8:11the spot. Uh. I love to say. Fuck was the reason Murder
- 8:15Dolls recorded that song. It wasn't on the original Uh, it was on
- 8:18the on the uh the special edition. It's a bonus track because we were
- 8:22in Europe and we were opening up for Papa Roach and the audience hated us
- 8:26every night, and we we thought, okay, well, how can I
- 8:28fuck with them even more? And I saw the Umbrella sitting over in the
- 8:33corner and we had just started playing that song, and I was like,
- 8:37I'm gonna write fuck on it and we'll see what happened. And that now
- 8:43that's the staple of the show. People expect to see it and make it.
- 8:46It's just part of it. And that's how we made stuff up,
- 8:50you know. And uh, just oh well, let's I'm gonna shave my
- 8:52eyebrows off today. Okay, I'll do it too, all right. Cool,
- 8:56let's let's all wear red and we're all wearing red and blae. Let's
- 9:00just kind of make it more uniform. All right, let's do it.
- 9:03It was very and and then and so we were making it up as we
- 9:07were going along, and it was also really fat. Joey had just a
- 9:11short amount of time to do this and get back to slip Knock, so
- 9:16it wasn't any time to think about it. And when the band started getting
- 9:18some traction and getting eyes on us, you know, obviously because it was
- 9:22the first time Slipknock members had been a mass so we had all these eyes
- 9:26on us. And then it just it took off in different parts of the
- 9:30world and here we are twenty one years later. It's it's it worked out.
- 9:35It worked out in my favorite thanks to Joey. I don't have to
- 9:39work a day job anymore. This is this is my job, and I
- 9:43don't I don't consider it job. Are think probably the biggest shock for people
- 9:46at the time too, with seeing Joey play the guitar like he was a
- 9:50fucking good guitarist as well as a good drum uni. Yeah, he was
- 9:54all an all around musician. The funny thing was when we got together and
- 10:00we started playing them making the Murder Doll's album because lot people don't know,
- 10:03because when you see the packaging, you see the band on it. Nobody
- 10:07played on that record except for Joey, me and Trip. There were three
- 10:11people on that album. That's it. Nobody else played on it, and
- 10:16Trip came in just one day to do guitar solos, but everything else was
- 10:20ninety Joey ten percent Me on the instruments. I did some bass and guitar
- 10:26solos I think on nineteen seventy six or something like that. But between Joey
- 10:31and I we were a full band. Joey couldn't sing and I couldn't play
- 10:35drums, but he could play drums and I could sing, and we both
- 10:39could play guitar and play bass and play piano or whatever enough, and we
- 10:43together we were a two man band, and instantly we had chemistry. We
- 10:48worked like Joey be like I don't know, there was something about him.
- 10:50He could pull some of the coolest ideas out of me, just because it
- 10:56made me feel good when I could get a reaction out of him when he
- 10:58would go, that's fucking awesome, and I'm like, whoa, I just
- 11:03made the guy slipped on the guy with a Grammy say, I you know
- 11:07what I mean? Like it was it meant something when he would and he
- 11:11was serious about it. He was like, that's a great idea. And
- 11:13I loved having a miss having that, you know, having a dude.
- 11:18It would be like he pushed and pulled a lot with me. And I
- 11:20don't think I would do or be who I am without having his involvement in
- 11:26my in my world. When you actually came together, like Joey was with
- 11:31slipping not a clause and you sort of mainly with Frankenstein, Greg Queens from
- 11:35Planet thirty ente of a time. So how did the union of that metal
- 11:39and you're sort of glam punky sort of stuff, how to come together and
- 11:43create them redivols? I mean, you know it was just it was our
- 11:46influences. I mean, uh, you know, I was doing Frankenstein,
- 11:50Drag Queens. My favorite bands were were Alice Cooper, I was really listening
- 11:56to like New York Dolls and stuff around that time. I really got it
- 12:00to the to the the guy Ed Wood in that movie Tim Burton put out
- 12:05and all that sort of created Frankenstein Drag Queens. And then Joey happened to
- 12:11be simultaneously, not even knowing him. He was in Iowa doing the Rejects,
- 12:15which was this punk kind of thing. So whenever he heard Frankenstein Drag
- 12:20Queens and it was up for me being a part of this project with him.
- 12:24He was hearing what I was doing mixed with what he was doing.
- 12:26He was like, that's the closest thing I've heard to what I'm doing.
- 12:31If we could get this together, maybe we can make something that that's even
- 12:35better than what we have on our own. And that's what it what it
- 12:39was. And he was able to take my songs that he heard from Frankenstein
- 12:43Drag Queens and go that's pretty good, but what if what if we do
- 12:46this and twisted a bit. He produced it. He produced those songs.
- 12:50A lot of people will go, well, Murdered All's first album is Frankenstein
- 12:52Drag Queens re Recordings. I'm like, no, they're re recording, they're
- 12:56reproduced, they're they're they're produced by Joey. Joey is you know all people
- 13:01don't know him as outside of the drummer and well he plays guitar, but
- 13:05he's a great producer. He knows how to to hear. He knows when
- 13:09he hears a song and goes, that's a good song. And for example,
- 13:13you can take my two favorite songs on the last Murder Dolls record,
- 13:16Nowhere in Summertime Suicide were songs that I didn't think were good songs until Joey
- 13:22Georgison said, you're crazy, those songs are good. There was a demo
- 13:26I hadn't just left it in the corner. He heard it and went,
- 13:30these songs are amazing, and I'm like, are you sure? Are you
- 13:33crazy? And then when I hear them now, I'm like, was I
- 13:37crazy? He made He heard that in the little bit that I had,
- 13:45and those songs, that song would have never had the light of day had
- 13:48he not heard the potential in it. And that's what I missed the most,
- 13:52is having someone that can because I'm so unsure of myself with songs all
- 13:56the time, and he was He was the one to tell me that's good
- 14:01or that fucking sucks, and he had no problem doing either one. And
- 14:05I had no problem with him telling me that either. It was a I
- 14:07liked. I liked the honesty with it. I think he was probably I
- 14:13think about the third person I ever interviewed way back into late nineties, and
- 14:16she did like I've done hundreds since then, but to this day, he's
- 14:20still probably one of the most eloquent, well spoken, nicest people I've ever
- 14:24Smeeart and it was just it was an absolute gentleman. Yeah, he's a
- 14:28good dude. Man the world lost to good dudes, and a lot of
- 14:31people didn't know him other outside of the drumming, but he was He was
- 14:35a good a good friend. He was a good, good hearted person.
- 14:37He loved his fans and and I've never seen a more of a music fan
- 14:43than that guy. Like he turned me on to so much music. I
- 14:46was a little stubborn, one sided. If it wasn't this way, I
- 14:50wasn't gonna listen to it. And he's like, you're an idiot. Listen
- 14:52to this, Listen to this, listen to this. And there's so many
- 14:56bands I love now that I wouldn't have listened to if he wouldn't have like
- 15:00he introduced me to a killing Joke and the Melvins and Faith no more bands.
- 15:03I wasn't gonna give a chance. And he's like, and now I
- 15:07can't imagine what my music would be without having that that sprinkled in. So
- 15:13he's he's he was a genius and we lost a good dude. Right now,
- 15:18I'm gonna ask you to do something, sabooy. You might pick between
- 15:20your two kids. So which should the two medals albums your personal favorite?
- 15:28The second one is my favorite because there was I worked on it longer then
- 15:37I did the first. The first one was we did a little bit of
- 15:41music on it. I went home a little bit of music on it,
- 15:43and then I came back and it's like, do all the vocals in two
- 15:46days and you're done. The record's done. It wasn't like and plus those
- 15:50songs were songs I had recorded before, so it wasn't brand new to me.
- 15:54It was a new version of it, but it wasn't brand new.
- 15:56I was excited to hear those new versions. But when we did the second
- 16:00album, it was literally they went, Okay, we're going to put you
- 16:03in this recording studio and a house. Live in the house basically a compound
- 16:10and for thirty days, all you got to do is make a record and
- 16:14you've got food, booze, whatever you want, just do it. And
- 16:18I'm like, this is great. We got thirty days and Joey and I
- 16:21rekindled our friendship. Ramon was there, he joined the band, and it
- 16:26was just literally an entire thirty days of dudes. Just we were the best
- 16:30of friends. Uh. And we made that record from scratch. And that's
- 16:37why that one means a lot more to me. And because, like I
- 16:41said, the first one was re recordings. I still love that record too,
- 16:45but the second one just there's there's memories with it more than the music.
- 16:49Sometimes that I that makes me a lot closer to that. I'll before
- 16:55I let you go, mate, I've started doing not three different Spotify playlists
- 16:59people could get a quainted with the Bandstery Speak. Do you say, here's
- 17:02in your own songs that could be frankenstearin they can be murdered all as that
- 17:04could be your own. Give us a song for a playlist to get the
- 17:07party started, one for a playlist to save your marriage, and one for
- 17:11a playlist to end your marriage. And I know what that one's going to
- 17:14be. Straight up. I want one to end my marriage off of my
- 17:21songs. Uh hmmm, let's see. Uh let's fuck would be the one
- 17:30to end my marriage because that would be one not going toward my wife.
- 17:33I would say so. And what's the other question, I want one to
- 17:41save my marriage? Uh? I love it first fright, that's a that's
- 17:47me giving my heart out. So there you go. Okay. I wanted
- 17:49to get the party started. Oh I love to say fuck. That's a
- 17:55party starter. Beautiful Wednesday or may well. Thanks very much your time,
- 18:00Bra, it's been a pleasure and today this side of you as well.
- 18:03Mate. And I'll be front center of the Brisbane Show in February, So
- 18:06take care of yourself. You'll the maten always good talking for you man,
- 18:08take care, see you soon, all right. Rather make it
