- 1:29Dave Hamilton: We'll talk more in depth about all that in a little bit. For now,
- 1:32Dave Hamilton: here in Durham, New Hampshire, at least for another hour, I'm Dave Hamilton.
- 1:37Shannon Jean: Hey, I'm Shannon Jean. I'm up here this week at our river house.
- 1:41Shannon Jean: Nice. You know, Dave, it was so loud at the river last night.
- 1:43Shannon Jean: I had to put my Fitnexes in to block the river. Normally I love the river music.
- 1:48Shannon Jean: It's the best, but I was like, man, I'm just, I got a block and it was awesome. That's great.
- 1:54Dave Hamilton: Really good. That's awesome.
- 1:55Shannon Jean: That's awesome. Very cool. Sweet. So, hey, I want to talk about a couple of things.
- 1:59Shannon Jean: Okay. Two little short things. Yeah. I want to talk about, I bought a domain
- 2:04Shannon Jean: this weekend. Okay. And on Friday, anyway. And I want to talk about the negotiation.
- 2:08Shannon Jean: I know you've recently sold the domain.
- 2:09Dave Hamilton: I just sold the domain and negotiated.
- 2:11Shannon Jean: So I thought it would be a good discussion. So I'll start, and then you can
- 2:16Shannon Jean: tell from your flip side. So I wanted this domain.
- 2:21Shannon Jean: Resellerrocket.com is the domain. We call our cohort set, and we're doing some
- 2:26Shannon Jean: other stuff with Reseller Rocket that I want to go. So I wanted to have it.
- 2:29Shannon Jean: I picked up the related stuff, .co, .app, all kinds of stuff.
- 2:33Shannon Jean: Of course. I want the .com,
- 2:35Dave Hamilton: Right? I understand.
- 2:36Shannon Jean: And so I went to the site and I just saw it kind of had this generic like hosting,
- 2:43Shannon Jean: buy our hosting, do this kind of thing. I'm like, this is an affiliate site.
- 2:46Dave Hamilton: They're not doing anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're just trying to catch.
- 2:49Dave Hamilton: I mean, and there is business. That's a valid business that you just,
- 2:54Dave Hamilton: you know, harvest domains and put essentially redirects or sales pitches on
- 2:58Dave Hamilton: them and you're good to go.
- 2:59Shannon Jean: Yeah.
- 3:00Dave Hamilton: Yeah.
- 3:00Shannon Jean: So I jumped on Namecheap, which is what I use for most of my domains now.
- 3:04Shannon Jean: And I just looked at it, I just wanted to see some information.
- 3:06Shannon Jean: It's like, hey, this domain's for sale. I said, great, let's go, let's try to,
- 3:12Shannon Jean: I'll make an offer. And so it came, I always said, it came up and said,
- 3:16Shannon Jean: it's for sale for like $4,000. Okay. Somewhere around there.
- 3:20Shannon Jean: Yeah. I said, Oh, that's pretty interesting. Something like that.
- 3:22Shannon Jean: I, you know, I would have paid $4,000. It's like, Oh, this is worth it for me.
- 3:26Dave Hamilton: For sure. That's a great domain. Yeah.
- 3:29Shannon Jean: It is a good domain and it's right in my niche. If it were mine,
- 3:32Dave Hamilton: I would have sold it for more. I'll talk about that in a minute. Of course.
- 3:34Shannon Jean: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, but I can't, I always have to get a deal, right?
- 3:39Dave Hamilton: Of course.
- 3:39Shannon Jean: I can't not, I couldn't just pay for it. So I made a really low ball offer.
- 3:44Shannon Jean: I offer, oh, and I, so I made an offer of 2,300 bucks.
- 3:47Dave Hamilton: Okay.
- 3:48Shannon Jean: Just to get, just to get to negotiate.
- 3:50Dave Hamilton: Absolutely. It's serious enough. Like you're not offering $20 or somebody's going to be like.
- 3:54Shannon Jean: Okay, we're out of this. Yeah, a few hundred bucks. Like I'll pay 2,300
- 3:56Dave Hamilton: Bucks for it. Yeah, okay.
- 3:57Shannon Jean: You know, we're.
- 3:58Dave Hamilton: That's a smart offer. If the, if the value's for just higher than 50%,
- 4:02Dave Hamilton: I think is a great place to go.
- 4:04Shannon Jean: To get them. Cause I want them to respond.
- 4:06Dave Hamilton: You want them to, that's it. You need the conversation to start. Yes.
- 4:09Shannon Jean: I don't want to do ignore me. Right. So then I got an email from this company
- 4:13Shannon Jean: called Spaceship. You know what this is? Spaceship.com?
- 4:16Shannon Jean: Nope. So I guess they're a huge domain broker. At least I hope they are because
- 4:20Shannon Jean: I just sent them a bunch of money.
- 4:23Shannon Jean: So I get this domain or this thing, hey, welcome, da-da-da-da.
- 4:27Shannon Jean: I'm going to be, we're the intermediary here. Yep. And we're going to act as
- 4:31Shannon Jean: your broker during this negotiation. It's like, great. Okay, no problem.
- 4:35Shannon Jean: So I jumped into this new AI that I'm using, which I'm going to talk about on-
- 4:41Shannon Jean: Friday AI. Friday AI. And I said, hey, I want to buy this domain.
- 4:46Shannon Jean: Just give me some feedback. And I said, I offered $2,300. So in the meantime,
- 4:50Shannon Jean: they came back and they offered $3,450.
- 4:53Dave Hamilton: Okay, so we're moving here.
- 4:54Shannon Jean: I was like, hey, we're moving. So I throw it in the AI and go back and forth,
- 4:58Shannon Jean: just having a conversation about value and how to respond. Yeah.
- 5:02Shannon Jean: It's like, why would it respond with like, I don't know, $2,700 or $2,800 or
- 5:07Shannon Jean: something like that? And I said, go ahead and respond with, and I gave it an exact number, $2,671.
- 5:15Dave Hamilton: Okay.
- 5:16Shannon Jean: And my thought press was set. I'm hoping that they'll think that's it for me.
- 5:21Dave Hamilton: That you've got some math that you've done and here's the ceiling. And that's it.
- 5:24Shannon Jean: Yeah, it's not $2,700, it's not whatever. Right. So I'm going back and forth
- 5:29Shannon Jean: in the meantime. I haven't sent the response yet.
- 5:31Shannon Jean: About four hours later, they send me another offer, which is a terrible thing. Why? I don't know.
- 5:41Shannon Jean: So, however, this offer was, hey, pay like $1,100 down, and then you could make
- 5:48Shannon Jean: these payments over like 24 months.
- 5:52Shannon Jean: But it worked out to be about the same price that they were offering.
- 5:55Shannon Jean: So they're trying to give me payments, right? Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 5:59Dave Hamilton: But it's the, you know, you can't afford this car, but you could pay,
- 6:03Dave Hamilton: you know, $200 a month FFE.
- 6:05Dave Hamilton: And then, you know, FFE, have you ever seen that written down?
- 6:08Shannon Jean: No, what is FFE?
- 6:09Dave Hamilton: I asked because I had a guy write it down. Like, you know, I was offering to
- 6:12Dave Hamilton: buy a car for cash and he was like, well, here's the number.
- 6:15Dave Hamilton: And I'm like, I don't care about that number. I want to know. Nope.
- 6:18Dave Hamilton: I'm like, I want to know what the end, like what's what my total cost is going
- 6:22Dave Hamilton: to be. And he's like, yeah, he's like, the problem is I have a lot of people
- 6:24Dave Hamilton: come in here, can't afford cars. And so I tell him it's $200 FFE.
- 6:28Dave Hamilton: And when they ask me what's FFE, he says, I tell him.
- 6:30Dave Hamilton: And he used slightly different language than I'm going to use,
- 6:33Dave Hamilton: but he says it's for fricking ever.
- 6:37Shannon Jean: Yes, exactly.
- 6:38Dave Hamilton: You never will stop.
- 6:39Shannon Jean: Yeah. Yeah. So, but I thought it was kind of weak.
- 6:42Shannon Jean: I was like, man, they're, they're already responding. They should have waited.
- 6:46Shannon Jean: And so I, I, I said, okay, I'm going to go. So I waited until the end of the
- 6:50Shannon Jean: day and I had this AI respond for me. I said, okay, 2006, 74. And then I stopped.
- 6:55Shannon Jean: And then the craziest thing happened is when they came back, they just accepted it.
- 6:59Dave Hamilton: Of course. Like that.
- 7:00Shannon Jean: I'll take it. So yeah, it's really interesting.
- 7:04Dave Hamilton: Uh, I did something. Go ahead.
- 7:07Shannon Jean: Yeah. My take is like, it's just the same thing.
- 7:10Shannon Jean: Always using math, not emotion, right? When you're buying, you want to focus
- 7:15Shannon Jean: on the math, right? When you're going to sell, you want to be emotional.
- 7:18Shannon Jean: You want to get excited because you're trying to get them excited.
- 7:20Shannon Jean: You're trying to break them out of the math bubble and get their emotion.
- 7:24Shannon Jean: And I think you have a good, you started telling us a story about this.
- 7:27Dave Hamilton: Yeah. I think I told it a couple of weeks ago. I'm not going to mention the
- 7:30Dave Hamilton: domain because I want to talk about the price and I don't want to,
- 7:32Dave Hamilton: like it's somebody else's business.
- 7:34Dave Hamilton: The person who bought it, it's up to them to disclose, you know,
- 7:37Dave Hamilton: how much they paid for it, not me.
- 7:39Dave Hamilton: Makes sense. But I got an email out of the blue.
- 7:43Dave Hamilton: I hold all my domains with Cloudflare, so it came through Cloudflare.
- 7:47Dave Hamilton: And it was, you know, I want to buy your domain. But there was no offer associated
- 7:50Dave Hamilton: with it. And I'm like, okay, like fine.
- 7:53Dave Hamilton: And candidly, and I know this is not Friday AI, but I think I told this story
- 7:57Dave Hamilton: on Friday AI because without AI, i would not have responded to the email
- 8:02Dave Hamilton: because i'm like i well yeah because i don't know how to value a domain and
- 8:06Dave Hamilton: i didn't have time to figure it out but i asked our buddy claude you know or
- 8:10Dave Hamilton: i think i'm sure it was claude yeah uh whatever i asked some llm like okay,
- 8:15Dave Hamilton: i don't know how to value a domain how do we do that and specifically how do
- 8:19Dave Hamilton: we do it with this particular domain it was like okay i got you okay and it
- 8:22Dave Hamilton: found like three different domain,
- 8:25Dave Hamilton: you know websites and it It was like, okay, this one says that domain's worth
- 8:28Dave Hamilton: this, this one says this, and this one says this.
- 8:30Dave Hamilton: And it, you know, kind of, it did some analysis. Now, I'm way out over my skis
- 8:36Dave Hamilton: with this, right? So I just had to trust that what it, the three that it found,
- 8:40Dave Hamilton: I mean, I verified that the ones that it found said that it was worth the thing
- 8:43Dave Hamilton: that Claude said it was worth.
- 8:45Dave Hamilton: But I don't know if I should be trusting these or not, right?
- 8:47Dave Hamilton: You know, so I just decided, well, I got nothing to lose. Like,
- 8:50Dave Hamilton: these prices all seem good.
- 8:51Dave Hamilton: So they came back and they said, you know, the domain was worth somewhere between
- 8:54Dave Hamilton: like six grand and eight grand, let's say.
- 8:58Dave Hamilton: Okay. And I thought, okay, like for a domain, for, for something that I've been
- 9:02Dave Hamilton: sitting on and paying registration fees on for literally 20 plus years,
- 9:07Dave Hamilton: like that, but sure. Like eight grand, I'll take it, you know, six grand, I'll take it.
- 9:11Dave Hamilton: And, uh, and so I asked Claude, all right, now you write the response to the,
- 9:15Dave Hamilton: the, the, the person that wrote it.
- 9:17Dave Hamilton: And it was like, yeah, they're not giving us much to work with here.
- 9:19Dave Hamilton: We don't know who they are really, you know, um, which was smart of them.
- 9:23Dave Hamilton: you know you never want to divulge like they aren't part of a publicly traded
- 9:27Dave Hamilton: company but if they were that would be a bad thing to divulge right you know like.
- 9:32Shannon Jean: You know that's right
- 9:33Dave Hamilton: And so i it but it said you're probably going to get about 7500 for this i think you should ask 15,
- 9:41Dave Hamilton: and and i was like okay great like if we lose and they walk away no harm no
- 9:47Dave Hamilton: foul you know and we Yeah.
- 9:48Shannon Jean: That's a big ask.
- 9:49Dave Hamilton: Yeah, we respectfully offered 15, but it was still like, it was definitely a stretch.
- 9:55Dave Hamilton: And it was like, but, you know, don't just take whatever their offer is.
- 9:59Dave Hamilton: Like, you can definitely, there's going to be a little bit of back and forth
- 10:02Dave Hamilton: on this. I'm like, yeah, of course, no problem.
- 10:04Dave Hamilton: A week goes by, I haven't heard anything.
- 10:06Shannon Jean: So Claude sent the offer for you.
- 10:08Dave Hamilton: Correct. A week goes by, never heard anything. They come back.
- 10:12Dave Hamilton: I can't do 15, but I can do 10.
- 10:14Dave Hamilton: And I was like, I don't need Claude for that. I'm going to run this past Claude,
- 10:18Dave Hamilton: but my decision is already made.
- 10:20Shannon Jean: Yeah, I'm taking it.
- 10:20Dave Hamilton: I'm taking it. And Claude's like, wait, stop. The previous advice I gave you
- 10:25Dave Hamilton: about negotiating is out the window. You say yes.
- 10:29Dave Hamilton: And they even said that the offer was, I can pay $10,000, and I'll be the one
- 10:37Dave Hamilton: to, like the buyer offered to eat the escrow.com fees.
- 10:41Shannon Jean: The escrow.
- 10:42Dave Hamilton: And we used escrow.com, which was great for domain. Like, it worked really, really well.
- 10:45Shannon Jean: You have to use, I mean, when you're buying and selling domains,
- 10:48Shannon Jean: which I've done a lot, like 400 at one time, you have to use an escrow company
- 10:53Shannon Jean: to manage the whole thing. It's a disaster if you try to do it.
- 10:56Shannon Jean: Yes, correct. Just pay the fee.
- 10:58Shannon Jean: Like, with Spaceship, we're splitting the fee.
- 11:00Dave Hamilton: Okay, yeah, that's fine.
- 11:01Shannon Jean: Like $130 each.
- 11:03Dave Hamilton: Yeah, it was less than, I think it was just a little over $200 for escrow.com's fee. And it was like.
- 11:09Shannon Jean: Great. Yeah, that sounds about right. Yeah, yeah. It's worth it.
- 11:11Dave Hamilton: And I made sure to tell them, look, you know, pay like fund escrow.com with
- 11:15Dave Hamilton: an ACH or something, not with a credit card because you don't want to pay an additional 3%.
- 11:19Dave Hamilton: Now, I don't care if they wanted to pay the additional 3%. I was just trying
- 11:22Dave Hamilton: to be a nice guy, you know, like give them some advice. But yeah,
- 11:25Dave Hamilton: yeah, yeah. And then on Friday, I just week, I'll share because I took since AI earned me that 10K.
- 11:31Dave Hamilton: I took that 10K and I told AI to invest it for me. And we'll talk about the
- 11:35Dave Hamilton: results of how that's going on Friday.
- 11:38Dave Hamilton: Yeah. Sweet. All right.
- 11:41Dave Hamilton: I have a question that I want to ask you, Shannon, but and I will,
- 11:47Dave Hamilton: I promise you that I will.
- 11:49Dave Hamilton: But the next thing that I want to do is talk about our sponsors.
- 11:55Dave Hamilton: Listen, entrepreneurs, our problem usually isn't falling asleep.
- 11:59Dave Hamilton: It's that the world keeps talking, right? The house, the street and the brain
- 12:04Dave Hamilton: still running a stand up meeting all by itself at midnight.
- 12:08Dave Hamilton: So I've been using Somnipods 3 from our sponsor Fitnexa, and the noise cancellation
- 12:15Dave Hamilton: knocks down enough of what's around me that I can just tune it out and wind
- 12:20Dave Hamilton: down, right? And this is great on an especially distracting day.
- 12:23Dave Hamilton: Like, that's the whole ballgame.
- 12:26Dave Hamilton: You know, these have absolutely earned a spot in my travel kit.
- 12:29Dave Hamilton: I will be bringing them with me to New York this week without question.
- 12:33Dave Hamilton: They're already packed.
- 12:34Dave Hamilton: And yes, the noise cancellation is important. Comfort is what makes it work, though.
- 12:40Dave Hamilton: They're flat enough that I can lie directly on them. You know, I sleep on my side.
- 12:45Dave Hamilton: And for me, these stay comfortable with my head on the pillow.
- 12:49Dave Hamilton: And the companion app is awesome. The content is genuinely good.
- 12:53Dave Hamilton: And you can get the sounds you want in seconds. Nobody wants to fight a menu
- 12:57Dave Hamilton: at midnight. And their app doesn't make you, right?
- 13:00Dave Hamilton: That's the charmed life, right? Owning your own night.
- 13:04Dave Hamilton: Fit Nexa is giving our listeners you $10 off Somnipods 3.
- 13:09Dave Hamilton: Head to go.fitnexa.com slash brain and the discount applies automatically.
- 13:14Dave Hamilton: You can also use code brain for $10 off.
- 13:17Dave Hamilton: That's go.fitnexa.com slash brain. Code brain. The link's in our show notes
- 13:22Dave Hamilton: too. Check it out. I think you're going to like them.
- 13:24Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to Fit Nexa for sponsoring this episode.
- 13:28Dave Hamilton: And founders, we are world-class at a specific kind of self-deception.
- 13:33Dave Hamilton: We'll get to it after the launch, or after the quarter, or after the thing that comes after the thing.
- 13:41Dave Hamilton: I have a recurring calendar event
- 13:43Dave Hamilton: called Get Healthy that's been politely rescheduling itself since 2019.
- 13:48Dave Hamilton: You get what I'm saying, right? You've got weight loss goals,
- 13:51Dave Hamilton: and this summer, it's time to actually hit them.
- 13:54Dave Hamilton: Weight Loss by HIMSS, our sponsor, is designed to support you every step of the way.

- 15:11Dave Hamilton: Go check it out. I think you're going to like it. And our thanks to HIMSS.com
- 15:14Dave Hamilton: for sponsoring this episode.
- 15:16Dave Hamilton: All right, Shannon, you, when we were talking recently and you've said this
- 15:22Dave Hamilton: many, many times, one of your favorite things to do, one of your favorite ways
- 15:25Dave Hamilton: perhaps to manage people is to go up to them and ask them a question.
- 15:31Dave Hamilton: And I believe that question is, you want to say the question,
- 15:35Dave Hamilton: make sure I have this right?
- 15:36Shannon Jean: How can I help?
- 15:37Dave Hamilton: That's the one.
- 15:40Dave Hamilton: So I'm wondering if perhaps there's an improvement to be made here.
- 15:46Shannon Jean: Oh, awesome.
- 15:47Dave Hamilton: Well, because I had somebody ask me this question recently.
- 15:53Dave Hamilton: And, of course, we've all been asked this question throughout our lives.
- 15:56Dave Hamilton: It is part of the charmed life when someone offers assistance. I love it.
- 16:00Dave Hamilton: But how can I help to me when asked of me?
- 16:09Dave Hamilton: Put something on me because now I need to stop and figure out how to fricking
- 16:14Dave Hamilton: delegate this thing that I'm in.
- 16:17Dave Hamilton: Right. Like it's like you could you could help me by not asking that question. Right.
- 16:22Dave Hamilton: Like I if I wanted to delegate this, I would have already told you what to do.
- 16:27Dave Hamilton: Now, I know that's different when you're asking an employee.
- 16:31Dave Hamilton: But yeah, but yeah, but that the the the internal response might be similar.
- 16:38Dave Hamilton: Like, well, if I knew what to what I wanted help with, I like if I knew how
- 16:42Dave Hamilton: to teach you what I wanted, I would already have asked that or I would already
- 16:47Dave Hamilton: have thought through that.
- 16:48Dave Hamilton: And I haven't. And so it like it when it was asked of me recently,
- 16:53Dave Hamilton: it was triggering. It was like, come on, like, I don't what? No, like I want action.
- 16:59Dave Hamilton: So I'm wondering if there's an improvement to be made to this here,
- 17:03Dave Hamilton: because you don't know what people don't know. And the people that work for
- 17:05Dave Hamilton: you aren't going to tell you what I'm saying here if it happens to be their
- 17:09Dave Hamilton: reaction, right? Because, you know, you're the one that signs the check.
- 17:11Shannon Jean: Yeah, I have comments. I'll wait until you're done.
- 17:14Dave Hamilton: Yeah. So I'm wondering if instead of only asking how can I help, an iteration of it is –,
- 17:23Dave Hamilton: Would it be helpful if I did X or can I help by doing X or is there something else?
- 17:31Dave Hamilton: Right. So you're you're you're offering a thing and then also leaving it open
- 17:37Dave Hamilton: ended. If they've got if they've got X covered, maybe they want Y.
- 17:41Dave Hamilton: It starts to come. It's the it's just like we, you know, with the blank slate syndrome. Right.
- 17:46Dave Hamilton: And we want to avoid we use A.I. to avoid blank slate syndrome.
- 17:49Dave Hamilton: you know all of that stuff and
- 17:51Dave Hamilton: asking somebody how can i help basically is giving them a blank slate and,
- 17:58Dave Hamilton: i certainly am learning that i work a lot better when there's
- 18:01Dave Hamilton: anything on the slate even if it's a crappy idea on the slate right you know
- 18:06Dave Hamilton: because then yeah then we can iterate and edit and and or whatever version of
- 18:10Dave Hamilton: that is you know in a conversation you can collaborate on on that. So yeah, I, I.
- 18:15Shannon Jean: I, let me, let me, let me add some nuance here. So how can I help is a good soundbite.
- 18:20Dave Hamilton: Exactly.
- 18:21Shannon Jean: I don't really say it like that every time,
- 18:23Dave Hamilton: But some people do.
- 18:25Shannon Jean: I got that. Yeah. I hope don't always say it. Let me tell you how I would typically
- 18:29Shannon Jean: say it to one of my employees is I'd be walking around in the morning and you
- 18:32Shannon Jean: know, I, the reason I walk around in the morning when I walk into the building
- 18:36Shannon Jean: is I just want to see what's going on.
- 18:38Shannon Jean: Who's got the stack of laptops that are getting a little high yep why is this
- 18:42Shannon Jean: box of iphones hasn't moved in three days you know i'm observing but i'm doing
- 18:47Shannon Jean: it nicely and along the way
- 18:49Shannon Jean: i often am like emptying the trash so they see me being of service to them because
- 18:54Shannon Jean: but as i'm emptying the trash i'm like looking what's going on and i'm looking
- 18:57Shannon Jean: i hate to say this but i'm looking in the trash like
- 19:00Shannon Jean: who's throwing away all this good stuff i always want to know what's going on
- 19:03Shannon Jean: this is how i micromanage but i try to do it subtly.
- 19:06Shannon Jean: The way I would typically say it to an employee like this, I would say something like,
- 19:11Shannon Jean: Hey, is there anything I can do for you to help you clear this pile?
- 19:14Shannon Jean: Yes. Is there anything I can do for you to help speed up?
- 19:18Shannon Jean: You know, I see we don't, we didn't have like red and green lights on the tech
- 19:22Shannon Jean: stations. Oh, there's lots of companies that do because that would freak me
- 19:25Shannon Jean: out. Very big brotherish.
- 19:27Shannon Jean: But we definitely had, you needed to be on pace to get a certain number of things done.
- 19:32Shannon Jean: So instead of berating somebody, I would just go, what can I do to help you?
- 19:39Shannon Jean: I know you've done this before. yeah if your pace is eight laptops a day i'm
- 19:44Shannon Jean: just making that up sure sure sure you and you and for a week you're at five
- 19:47Shannon Jean: a day what can i help you need another tool are you struggling with something yeah
- 19:52Dave Hamilton: That's it it's the follow-up questions it's yeah i and i it doesn't surprise
- 19:58Dave Hamilton: me that you quickly learned not to only ask how can i help whether you did ever or not like you
- 20:05Dave Hamilton: certainly now you know that that's but,
- 20:09Dave Hamilton: there are many people out there that that is their version of,
- 20:16Dave Hamilton: i want to participate but i don't know how to and so i'm going to put it on
- 20:20Dave Hamilton: you to tell me how to participate i'm going to essentially put it on you to
- 20:24Dave Hamilton: to to manage me to delegate me yeah and it's like uh you know well the.
- 20:29Shannon Jean: Smart people just do it
- 20:31Dave Hamilton: That's the thing right it's just you don't.
- 20:33Shannon Jean: Wait Like if I'm helping, like there's, I don't know a lot of,
- 20:38Shannon Jean: my beginner mind, just like we talked, we started the show.
- 20:41Shannon Jean: There's so much I don't know anything about. Of course. But if I'm helping someone
- 20:44Shannon Jean: like build a deck, which I don't know really anything about, I mean, I could fake it.
- 20:51Shannon Jean: It doesn't take me long to start watching going, oh, you know what?
- 20:54Shannon Jean: Every few minutes they need this thing. Or I need to keep the level close by
- 20:59Shannon Jean: because I'm the helper. I'm handing it to them. Yeah, yeah. So your job as if
- 21:06Shannon Jean: we're employers, right? This is business brain. We're business owners.
- 21:09Shannon Jean: I think my job is to then watch and start to think, okay, what is this?
- 21:14Shannon Jean: This guy's making a big U-turn every time he has to go get this thing.
- 21:18Dave Hamilton: Yeah, how can we make this more efficient?
- 21:20Shannon Jean: He has to do this. We need to change the shape of the workstation,
- 21:22Shannon Jean: right? And so you're constantly looking at those things.
- 21:25Dave Hamilton: So that's what I really mean. That's how I look at things. It's like I'm always looking to optimize.
- 21:33Shannon Jean: But I want them to do, you know, I want the idea to come. It's like we had that discussion about KPIs.
- 21:40Shannon Jean: I never tell my people what their KPIs are. I let them tell me.
- 21:44Dave Hamilton: Yes. Oh, for sure. It's so much better.
- 21:46Shannon Jean: It's so much better because they own it.
- 21:48Dave Hamilton: If they sandbag a little bit, then it's like, oh, well, that's a bad sign.
- 21:52Shannon Jean: You know? Yeah. They either go too low or they go crazy high.
- 21:54Shannon Jean: I'm like, well, so we figured out. But it's the same thing. I'm going to try
- 21:58Shannon Jean: to nudge and make suggestions to where they're going to say,
- 22:03Shannon Jean: you know what really helped me?
- 22:04Shannon Jean: My laptop's a piece of crap and it crashes every whatever. And I really need
- 22:09Shannon Jean: to get a better system. Oh, I can help you fix that problem.
- 22:12Shannon Jean: That, yes, exactly. That's what I'm talking about.
- 22:15Shannon Jean: So, yeah, I do agree. They need some more nuance. Yeah.
- 22:18Dave Hamilton: Asking open an open ended question like that, especially when you're trying
- 22:22Dave Hamilton: to help is probably the least helpful thing you can do.
- 22:26Dave Hamilton: It's asking with with some with some some context.
- 22:32Dave Hamilton: It seems like you might need help barrier. Yeah.
- 22:36Shannon Jean: Cause people, I think often feel like, well, they're offering,
- 22:38Shannon Jean: but they don't really want to help.
- 22:39Dave Hamilton: Right. Well, and sometimes that's how that is interpreted. When somebody offers
- 22:44Dave Hamilton: open-endedly, it's like, how can I help? It's like, well, you can help by paying attention.
- 22:47Shannon Jean: Another iteration. Yeah. Another iteration I really like before we put this
- 22:52Shannon Jean: topic to bed is, is to say, I do anything I could to help you succeed.
- 22:58Dave Hamilton: Yes.
- 22:59Shannon Jean: Let's talk about that. Yeah. What skills do I have?
- 23:04Shannon Jean: How could my network help you? How could my tools that I have help you? How could whatever?
- 23:09Shannon Jean: Yep. So, you know, I'm trying to put in front of them that I'm a resource and
- 23:14Shannon Jean: train them that it's okay to ask people.
- 23:17Dave Hamilton: To use you as a resource.
- 23:18Shannon Jean: To use me as a resource. Yes. Yeah. And to have that kind of back and forth
- 23:23Shannon Jean: and not just be like, oh, God, the boss is coming. I'm going to get in trouble.
- 23:26Dave Hamilton: Yeah, right.
- 23:27Shannon Jean: No, it doesn't work that way here. It doesn't, no. We just, yeah,
- 23:29Shannon Jean: we're building something. I want to enjoy working this. I want to be able to
- 23:32Shannon Jean: laugh and hang out with you at the Friday barbecue. And so I'll do whatever
- 23:36Shannon Jean: I can to help you succeed and give you as whatever it is. Whatever it is.
- 23:42Shannon Jean: But I try to always tell them, I want it to come from you because you know better
- 23:46Shannon Jean: than me walking in the door saying. You're the one doing it every day. Yeah.
- 23:49Shannon Jean: You need this. This is the tool we use for this. And I had a guy forever,
- 23:53Shannon Jean: we used this certain tool to open up. And then I had a guy come in and say,
- 23:56Shannon Jean: you know what? I used to work for a glass repair company and we use this tool.
- 24:01Shannon Jean: And I was like, what is that? What is that tool?
- 24:03Dave Hamilton: Domain expertise, man.
- 24:05Shannon Jean: Yeah. And he goes, look, and this tool, it's better. It's got a better plastic
- 24:09Shannon Jean: hook and I can pop it in and pop that screen right off.
- 24:12Shannon Jean: And I said, that's genius. Where do we buy a whole bunch? And he's like,
- 24:15Shannon Jean: well, I could probably get them. I'm like, great. How much money do I need to give you?
- 24:18Dave Hamilton: Yeah, go.
- 24:19Shannon Jean: Yeah. You know, recognizing those things and letting other people figure it out. It's, it's huge.
- 24:24Dave Hamilton: Great.
- 24:25Shannon Jean: You know, so it's cool.
- 24:27Dave Hamilton: Good stuff all right uh well before we end this what is our big takeaway today,
- 24:35Dave Hamilton: i know i'm looking so we did just as a recap we did the domain negotiating and then buy with.
- 24:41Shannon Jean: Math sell with
- 24:41Dave Hamilton: Emotion we revisited how can i help um,
- 24:46Dave Hamilton: i i think it's some version of of this second topic that we had i do too i think
- 24:52Dave Hamilton: there's there's because there's a lot there is um maybe the the big takeaway
- 24:57Dave Hamilton: is uh be mindful and i'm i'm,
- 25:02Dave Hamilton: riffing on this be mindful of how you can help your how you can offer help to your team.
- 25:10Shannon Jean: Yeah being a being of service yeah and and and uh that that takes time yes to
- 25:17Shannon Jean: believe it because they don't believe yes right they
- 25:20Dave Hamilton: Don't yeah so that's fair yeah right there's a lot to this.
- 25:23Shannon Jean: So yeah yeah yeah so we'll break it down we'll dig in deeper um you can down
- 25:28Shannon Jean: we're going to create a business blueprint based on this, which is basically
- 25:31Shannon Jean: a business plan to roll out this concept to your team.
- 25:36Shannon Jean: And you can get it at businessbrain.show slash blueprints. Come grab it.
- 25:41Shannon Jean: It'll be up there after this show airs. That's it.
