- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. You have joined me as we today
- 0:19will do just what the name of this podcast says, a chapter a
- 0:22day Bible reading podcast where friend you and I, we are going
- 0:27to have a real treat. We are going to continue reading
- 0:30the Gospels, these incredible accounts of the life and
- 0:34ministry of our Lord. What an incredible, mind-blowing
- 0:38thing. That God not only came down to
- 0:41our planet in human form so that we could know him, but he got
- 0:45these four people to write down different accounts of that life
- 0:50so that we can see it from different angles for different
- 0:53audiences, for different moments in our journey, so that we can
- 0:57truly understand the multifaceted man who is our God.
- 1:03And today we get to do that. Today we get to walk the
- 1:06streets, sit down and back rooms and hear Jesus speak to his
- 1:12beloved 12 friends as he gets closer to fulfilling his
- 1:16mission. Oht let's do it, friends.
- 1:19Let us hear these words of Jesus and see what he is up to today
- 1:23as we read together. Mark, Chapter 10.
- 1:37Then Jesus left Capernaum and went down to the region of Judea
- 1:42and into the area east of the Jordan River.
- 1:45Once again, crowds gathered around him and as usual, he was
- 1:49teaching them. Some Pharisees came and tried to
- 1:53trap him with this question. Should a man be allowed to
- 1:56divorce his wife? Jesus answered them with a
- 2:00question. What did Moses say in the law
- 2:02about divorce? Well, he permitted it, they
- 2:06replied. He said a man can give his wife
- 2:09a written notice of divorce and send her away, but Jesus
- 2:13responded. He wrote this commandment only
- 2:17as a concession to your hard hearts, but God made them male
- 2:22and female from the beginning of creation.
- 2:25This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is
- 2:29joined to his wife and the two are united into one since they
- 2:35are no longer 2 but one. Let no one split apart what God
- 2:39has joined together. Later, when he was alone with
- 2:44his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.
- 2:48He told them whoever divorces his wife and marries someone
- 2:52else commits adultery against her.
- 2:55And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone
- 2:57else, she commits adultery. One day some parents brought
- 3:03their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them, but
- 3:07the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.
- 3:10When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his
- 3:13disciples. He said to them, Let the
- 3:16children come to me. Don't stop them, for the Kingdom
- 3:20of God belongs to those who are like these children.
- 3:24I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of
- 3:28God like a child, will never enter it.
- 3:31Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on
- 3:35their heads and blessed them. As Jesus was starting out on his
- 3:40way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down,
- 3:44and asked, good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
- 3:48life? Why do you call me good?
- 3:51Jesus asked. Only God is truly good.
- 3:55But to answer your question, you know the commandments.
- 3:58You must not murder. You must not commit adultery.
- 4:02You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.
- 4:06You must not cheat anyone. Honour your father and mother,
- 4:10teacher, the man replied. I've obeyed all these
- 4:13commandments since I was young. Looking at the man, Jesus felt
- 4:18genuine love for him. There is still one thing you
- 4:22haven't done, he told him. Go and sell all your possessions
- 4:27and give the money to the poor and you will have treasure in
- 4:31heaven. Then come follow me at this.
- 4:36The man's face fell and he went away sad, for he had many
- 4:41possessions. Jesus looked around and said to
- 4:44his disciples, How hard is it for the rich to enter the
- 4:48Kingdom of God. This amazed them.
- 4:51But Jesus said again, Dear children, it is very hard to
- 4:55enter the Kingdom of God. In fact, it is easier for a
- 4:59camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to
- 5:03enter the Kingdom of God. The disciples were astounded.
- 5:08Then who in the world can be saved?
- 5:10They asked. Jesus looked at them intently
- 5:14and said humanly, speaking, it is impossible, but not with God.
- 5:20Everything is possible with God, and Peter began to speak up.
- 5:25We've given up everything to follow you, he said.
- 5:29Yes, Jesus replied. And I assure you that everyone
- 5:33who has given up house, or brothers or sisters, or mother,
- 5:36or father, or children or property, for my sake and for
- 5:41the good news we'll receive now in return, 100 times as many
- 5:46houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property,
- 5:51along with persecution and in the world to come, that person
- 5:57will have eternal life. But many who are the greatest
- 6:01now will be least important then, and those who seem least
- 6:05important now will be the greatest then.
- 6:09They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking
- 6:13ahead of them. The disciples were filled with
- 6:16awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with
- 6:19fear. Taking the 12 disciples aside,
- 6:23Jesus once more began to describe everything that was
- 6:26about to happen to him. Listen, he said.
- 6:30We're going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be
- 6:33betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious
- 6:37law. They will sentence him to die
- 6:40and hand him over to the Romans. They will mock him, spit on him,
- 6:45flog him with a whip and kill him.
- 6:49But after three days he will rise again.
- 6:53Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to
- 6:57him teacher. They said we want you to do us a
- 7:02favour. What is your request?
- 7:04He asked. They replied.
- 7:07When, When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit
- 7:12in places of honour next to you, one on your right and the other
- 7:15on your left. But Jesus said to them, you
- 7:19don't know what you were asking. Are you able to drink from the
- 7:23bitter cup of suffering I'm about to drink?
- 7:27Are you able to be baptised with the baptism of suffering?
- 7:30I must be baptised with OHP. Yes, they replied.
- 7:33We are able, then, Jesus has told them, You will indeed drink
- 7:38from my bitter cup and be baptised with my baptism of
- 7:42suffering. But I have no right to say who
- 7:45will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places
- 7:49for the ones he has chosen. When the ten other disciples
- 7:54heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.
- 7:58So Jesus called them together and said, you know that the
- 8:02rulers in this world lorded over their people, and officials
- 8:06flaunt their authority over those under them.
- 8:09But among you it will be different.
- 8:13Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,
- 8:17and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of
- 8:21everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not
- 8:26to be served, but to serve others and to give his life as a
- 8:30ransom for many. Then they reached Jericho, and
- 8:35as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed
- 8:39him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus,
- 8:43son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.
- 8:47When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began
- 8:51to shout. Jesus, son of David, have mercy
- 8:56on me. Be quiet.
- 8:58Many of the people yelled at him, but he only shouted louder.
- 9:02Son of David, have mercy on me. When Jesus heard him, he stopped
- 9:08and said tell him to come over here.
- 9:11So they called the blind man. Cheer up, they said.
- 9:14Come on, he's calling you. Bartimaeus threw aside his coat,
- 9:18jumped up, and came to Jesus. What do you want me to do for
- 9:23you? Jesus?
- 9:24Asked my rabbi. The blind man said, I want to
- 9:28see and Jesus said to him, go, for your faith has healed you
- 9:35instantly. The man could see and he
- 9:38followed Jesus down the road Our Lord.
- 9:50There are some hard teachings in this chapter, teachings which
- 9:57can cause well, a lot of consternation and and confusion
- 10:02and doubt and fear. But we hear you say that even
- 10:08though we attempt to do the right thing, it is hard to live
- 10:12this Christian life. But then you tell us that if we
- 10:18try to do these things in our own power, it is impossible.
- 10:25These things are only possible because of you and your grace in
- 10:29our lives and the forgiveness that you hold out to us.
- 10:33Again and again. Thank you that as flawed and
- 10:38broken people walking through this life, even with the best of
- 10:42intentions, to live a life of worship for you.
- 10:46When we get it wrong, we arrive before the cross, where there
- 10:52you are, your arms stretched wide, but forgiveness and an
- 10:58embrace of love and acceptance. Ah, Lord, continue to work on
- 11:04us, to change us, to renew us, to make us more like you.
- 11:11And even though we'll never get close, we just want to be a work
- 11:15in progress, getting closer every day.
- 11:19So we accept your grace and we love you, and we're so grateful,
- 11:25and it's in your precious name that we pray all of these
- 11:28things. Ah man.
