- 0:04podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm your host, Anna McGivern for October 31st.
- 0:12Happy Halloween. Yes, today is Halloween, one of
- 0:18the most widely celebrated holidays in the world.
- 0:22Well, at least North America and a few other places too.
- 0:26The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of
- 0:30Samhain when the Celts, who lived 2000 years ago in what is
- 0:34now Ireland, the United Kingdom and Northern France, celebrated
- 0:38their New Year on November 1st. This day marked the end of
- 0:42summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold
- 0:46winter. The Celts believed that on the
- 0:48night before the New Year, the boundary between the worlds of
- 0:52the living and the dead became blurred.
- 0:55In the 8th century, Pope Gregory the Third designated November
- 0:591st as the time to honor All Saints, and soon afterward, All
- 1:05Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.
- 1:10The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve and later became
- 1:15Halloween. Over centuries, European
- 1:18immigrants brought these customs to North America, where
- 1:21traditions like pumpkin carving, trick or treating, and costume
- 1:24parties transformed Halloween into that festive celebration we
- 1:28know today. What makes Halloween special is
- 1:32its blend of ancient spirituality and modern
- 1:35playfulness, a night when we can explore our fascination with the
- 1:39mysterious and supernatural in a joyful, creative way.
- 1:44And that brings us to today's quote from author Stephen King,
- 1:49who said monsters are real and ghosts are real too.
- 1:55They live inside us, and sometimes they win.
- 2:02King's chilling observation captures why Halloween has
- 2:05resonated with humans for thousands of years.
- 2:09This holiday isn't really about literal monsters and ghosts.
- 2:14It's about acknowledging the darkness that exists within and
- 2:17around us and finding ways to confront it.
- 2:22Think about what King is really saying.
- 2:25We all have inner demons, fears, regrets, anger, grief,
- 2:29insecurities. These are the real monsters.
- 2:33Halloween gives us a night to externalize them, to dress them
- 2:37up, to parade them around the neighborhood.
- 2:40By making our fears visible and even playful, we gained some
- 2:45power over them. This is what the ancient Celts
- 2:48understood when they created Samhain.
- 2:51They believed that confronting death in darkness helped them
- 2:54appreciate life and light. Modern Halloween continues this
- 2:59tradition. We watch scary movies, visit
- 3:03haunted houses, tell ghost stories, all safe ways to face
- 3:08our fears. We dress as monsters, claiming
- 3:12that power for ourselves rather than feeling victimized by it.
- 3:16King has made a career exploring our darkest fears through
- 3:19fiction, and he understands that naming our monsters, looking
- 3:24them in the eye, and even laughing at them diminishes
- 3:27their power over us. Halloween is one night a year
- 3:32when we collectively acknowledge that yes, monsters are real, but
- 3:36so is our courage to face them. As you enjoy your Halloween
- 3:41tonight, think about King's insight about monsters living
- 3:45inside us. What fears or demons are you
- 3:49carrying? Halloween gives you permission
- 3:52to acknowledge them, maybe even laugh at them a little.
- 3:57Whether you're watching a scary movie, visiting a haunted
- 4:00attraction, or just handing out candy, use this night as a
- 4:04reminder that facing our fears even playfully diminishes their
- 4:09power. The monsters may be real, but so
- 4:12is your courage. And if you have children trick
- 4:16or treating tonight, remember that when they dress as monsters
- 4:21and superheroes, they're practicing something important,
- 4:26learning that they can face scary things and come out OK on
- 4:29the other side. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:32I'm Andrew Mcgibbon, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:37tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod
