- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on everybody. I hope you're doing well. I
- 0:02Speaker 1: wanted to let you know. This podcast episode was recorded
- 0:05Speaker 1: on Wednesday, December fourth, twenty twenty four. By the time
- 0:09Speaker 1: you hear this, some things may have changed here there,
- 0:11Speaker 1: but we hope you enjoy the show. Welcome to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:50Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world, over eleven and a
- 0:53Speaker 1: half years strong. Can't believe it's been that long. I
- 0:56Speaker 1: am Jeff Warren. I am here with my good buddy
- 1:00Speaker 1: Leonard Hunsicker. Lend buddy, how are you. It's good to
- 1:03Speaker 1: hear your voice. I'm glad you're feeling a little healthier
- 1:06Speaker 1: now after after having some and I procedure in this
- 1:08Speaker 1: past week.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, just nothing I haven't had before, and you know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: it's like super quick and so hopefully it's the last
- 1:16Speaker 2: time I ever have to do that, but who knows.
- 1:19Speaker 2: But yeah, it just coming out of that, and I
- 1:22Speaker 2: mean that was Yeah. I would have been groggy as
- 1:26Speaker 2: hell for that show just because I was still it
- 1:27Speaker 2: would have been coming on anesthesia, so I didn't Maybe
- 1:30Speaker 2: it would have been great, might have even.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Like the crazy stuff and been like, oh, the hell
- 1:34Speaker 1: is going on with embiid? Why don't you get on
- 1:36Speaker 1: the court, you mook.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'd let him know exactly how I felt, give him
- 1:42Speaker 2: the business I've I've got my opinions on that at
- 1:48Speaker 2: this point anyway, and none of them are positive, which
- 1:51Speaker 2: there's there's really I mean, you know, okay, mac the's
- 1:55Speaker 2: nice player, and McCain has been pretty good so far
- 1:59Speaker 2: for a rookie, But man, and you would to talk
- 2:00Speaker 2: about you want to talk about an organization that's not
- 2:04Speaker 2: engendering any goodwill? All right now?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Exactly cool gez And you know, you know what's interesting, folks,
- 2:11Speaker 1: is that's about the extent of the Sixers that we're
- 2:14Speaker 1: going to be getting into on this particular show.
- 2:16Speaker 2: What else is there to say?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Exactly exactly? I didn't put it on the agenda at
- 2:21Speaker 1: all this week. I have nothing sixers on the agenda, Like,
- 2:23Speaker 1: what are we going to talk about? They won two
- 2:25Speaker 1: in a row? Whoo big whoop? What are we going
- 2:30Speaker 1: to talk about? Like, honestly, like you said, Jared McCain
- 2:32Speaker 1: has been fun to watch. It's great to watch a
- 2:34Speaker 1: rookie doing some good things. You know, who knows, maybe
- 2:36Speaker 1: he's gonna be Rookie of the Year, big whoop.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I don't know, and maybe I shouldn't. I don't know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: maybe I shouldn't disrespect the poor kid like that.
- 2:45Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't mean like I'm not trying to
- 2:47Speaker 2: disrespect him or anything, but yeah, just like I mean,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I hope he is good and has a good year
- 2:55Speaker 2: and proves that he's a piece going forward on the
- 2:57Speaker 2: steams as they move into the next iteration of whatever,
- 3:01Speaker 2: because I don't know if there are many long term
- 3:05Speaker 2: pieces for this team. All the people that are making
- 3:08Speaker 2: all the money, I would not consider long term pieces. Yeah, exactly,
- 3:12Speaker 2: even if they do have long term contracts, they are
- 3:14Speaker 2: not long term pieces.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, that's about enough of the sixers here, So folks,
- 3:20Speaker 1: real quick, just to give you a quick synopsis of
- 3:23Speaker 1: what we're gonna be getting into on this show. We're
- 3:25Speaker 1: gonna get in some major League baseball talk, the Golden
- 3:28Speaker 1: at bat rule, Yes, we're gonna get into that. We're
- 3:30Speaker 1: gonna get into robo umps as well, and what the
- 3:33Speaker 1: future may hold for major League baseball as it pertains
- 3:35Speaker 1: to these two ideas for the off season, and then
- 3:41Speaker 1: after that we're gonna get into some Philadelphia Union talk,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and after that we're gonna get into some brief Flyers
- 3:48Speaker 1: talk as well. Are they getting back to their twenty
- 3:50Speaker 1: twenty three twenty twenty four form. We're gonna give our
- 3:53Speaker 1: thoughts on that. Just some real quick thoughts on the
- 3:56Speaker 1: college football playoff bracket and where the team may actually
- 4:00Speaker 1: be like right now at this point early December, there's
- 4:04Speaker 1: still some unknowns. But college football playoff bracket. I think
- 4:07Speaker 1: it's gonna be really interesting this year. And then we
- 4:09Speaker 1: got a ton of Eagles talk too. We've got BLG.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Brandley Gouton from Bleedinggreen Nation dot com. He's gonna be
- 4:15Speaker 1: joining us for a deep dive into what we've been
- 4:16Speaker 1: seeing from this Eagles team and really where our expectations
- 4:20Speaker 1: are now for this team. As Lenn, I think facing
- 4:24Speaker 1: the Detroit Lions and the NFC Championship game is where
- 4:27Speaker 1: everybody's expectations are at this point.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I think that's fair. I mean, I think, honestly, I
- 4:33Speaker 2: think anything less than that for both franchises. Really, it
- 4:38Speaker 2: wouldn't surprise me if you were talking to a couple
- 4:40Speaker 2: of people in Detroit and the and their thought process was, yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 2: we'll probably see the Eagles in the in the NFC
- 4:47Speaker 2: Championship game. I think for both the fans of both organizations,
- 4:51Speaker 2: if that's not what it is, there will probably be
- 4:54Speaker 2: there not probably, there will definitely be some disappointment.
- 4:57Speaker 1: There absolutely Well, we got a ton of Eagles talk
- 4:59Speaker 1: coming your way. But first, let's get into some off
- 5:02Speaker 1: season major league baseball talk. A man who loves baseball,
- 5:08Speaker 1: Rob Manfred, he loves baseball. I'm kidding, of course, the
- 5:11Speaker 1: man just hates baseball for God's sake, and he's in
- 5:13Speaker 1: charge of it. He's been floating and looking to implement
- 5:16Speaker 1: a few new ideas this offseason and into the future. Len,
- 5:21Speaker 1: we got to get into the golden at bat rule
- 5:25Speaker 1: that was proposed and floated by him. So, folks, if
- 5:29Speaker 1: you don't know what this is at this point, what
- 5:33Speaker 1: is the golden at bat? Exactly what Rob Madford has
- 5:39Speaker 1: proposed or just floated, I should say. So, what if
- 5:43Speaker 1: a team could choose one at bat in every game
- 5:48Speaker 1: send their best hitter to the plate at any point
- 5:51Speaker 1: in the game, even if it wasn't that particular's player,
- 5:55Speaker 1: that particular players turn to hit at that point, A
- 5:59Speaker 1: rule that would likely be used eighth, ninth innings tenth
- 6:03Speaker 1: innings perhaps, and it's basically a pinch hitter whenever you
- 6:08Speaker 1: want in the game. Len, this sucks. This entire idea
- 6:17Speaker 1: fucking stinks. I have never seen a.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Rule a language show.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Oh it is, it is. This is gonna be like
- 6:24Speaker 1: the Eric Shows.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, i'd been, I'd been, you know, watching my
- 6:30Speaker 2: language on purpose, but now I won't.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Okay, fuck that. Now when we're talking about this golden
- 6:35Speaker 1: apt bat rule, Rob Manfred hates baseball to float something
- 6:40Speaker 1: like this, this shitty idea. It actually enraged me when
- 6:46Speaker 1: I first read it. I seriously thought I was reading
- 6:48Speaker 1: an Onion article or something like that, and I was like,
- 6:50Speaker 1: what's happening here? Like, are you serious what this would
- 6:54Speaker 1: do for the game of baseball? From a negative perspective, Len,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'm actually upset right now talking about this. I am
- 7:01Speaker 1: because it you are. You're the traditionalist when it comes
- 7:05Speaker 1: to baseball on this podcast. You have been you always
- 7:08Speaker 1: have been a traditionalist. I've been more of the guy
- 7:10Speaker 1: of Okay, we need to take baseball into the future
- 7:13Speaker 1: in certain in some way, shape or form, right. I mean, look,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I think most of the changes that Major League Baseball
- 7:19Speaker 1: has made over the past, you know, year or two,
- 7:22Speaker 1: they've been pretty much a smashing success. Include the pitch clock,
- 7:26Speaker 1: a limited on pitching, changes to greatly speed up the game,
- 7:29Speaker 1: larger bases, and banning the shift, increase action with the
- 7:33Speaker 1: ball in play. I mean, other rules like the ghost
- 7:37Speaker 1: runner and extra innings have been I think begrudgingly accepted
- 7:41Speaker 1: from traditionalists and purists of the game. They feel it
- 7:44Speaker 1: goes a little too far, would you say, right? I
- 7:49Speaker 1: mean they've been tinkering here and there with the purity
- 7:52Speaker 1: of the sport, I guess you would say. And I
- 7:55Speaker 1: think that's where I get really pissed off with this
- 7:57Speaker 1: golden at bat issue, like the what what is left
- 8:01Speaker 1: of the purity of the game of baseball? You put
- 8:03Speaker 1: this golden app bat in there, and it is complete dogshit.
- 8:06Speaker 1: The game has really changed in a lot of ways.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Why not just Okay, so let's say it's a nine thing, yes,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and you got your seven, eight, nine hitters up for
- 8:14Speaker 2: the Phillies, and you know, wouldn't it be nice to
- 8:16Speaker 2: have Bryce Harper hit in that situation. I get why
- 8:19Speaker 2: they're doing it. Maybe they want to market their stars more.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I get I get that that is maybe part of
- 8:25Speaker 2: the thinking behind it. Why not just have Bryce Harper
- 8:28Speaker 2: hit every and you know, let him hit. If he
- 8:32Speaker 2: hits a double, then there's a designated runner that goes
- 8:34Speaker 2: out and takes a spot and he goes right back
- 8:36Speaker 2: up and hits again. Just just have him hit every
- 8:38Speaker 2: app out of the game then exactly. I mean, why
- 8:42Speaker 2: have a team, why why have a team at all?
- 8:45Speaker 1: Pay him five billion dollars he's the team?
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, hell, these guys are making, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 2: as much money as like Sodo is about to make
- 8:52Speaker 2: an Otani nakes. Why not have him just be the
- 8:54Speaker 2: whole team? You know, I don't know, It's silly to me,
- 8:59Speaker 2: and I'm not here. I don't want to dump on
- 9:01Speaker 2: everything that that Manfred has done because you mentioned some
- 9:04Speaker 2: things that are genuinely Like the pitchcock is great. The
- 9:08Speaker 2: shift thing, I was a little unsure about it, but
- 9:10Speaker 2: you know, hey, it opened up offenses that the thing
- 9:14Speaker 2: with the larger basis has opened up stealing again, which
- 9:18Speaker 2: is exciting. There have been some legitimately good changes, but
- 9:23Speaker 2: I feel like this is gimmicky. Those are more natural within,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you know, getting getting baseball back to what it was
- 9:30Speaker 2: and more of a flow of the game type thing.
- 9:33Speaker 2: This is more gimmicky, like you were saying, like the
- 9:36Speaker 2: ghost runner thing that that is a complete gimmick gap.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You're not letting the players that are on the rosters.
- 9:42Speaker 2: You're you're not letting them play the game in order
- 9:44Speaker 2: to get on base. You're not letting them play the
- 9:46Speaker 2: game in order to listen. Hey, look, there have been
- 9:49Speaker 2: plenty of times or I looked at the batters that
- 9:52Speaker 2: were coming up for the Phillies and going, oh, smells
- 9:55Speaker 2: like no hits to me. But you know, that's just
- 9:57Speaker 2: the way the batting order goes sometimes, and that's that's
- 10:01Speaker 2: the game. I mean. Otherwise, again, why even have a team?
- 10:05Speaker 2: Why not just have a designated guy that just does
- 10:08Speaker 2: everything right? So I mean, well, why not just you know,
- 10:13Speaker 2: while we're out of you know, just let's let's put
- 10:15Speaker 2: let's put like spots out in the in the seats,
- 10:19Speaker 2: you know, you know behind the fence that say two
- 10:22Speaker 2: x and every time you hit a home run it
- 10:24Speaker 2: lands in that spot. If you hit a three run homer,
- 10:27Speaker 2: it counts for sick runs. It doubles the runs. Like,
- 10:30Speaker 2: let's just do that now, Like and I hope Rob
- 10:33Speaker 2: Manford isn't listening to this because that they'll be like,
- 10:36Speaker 2: oh cool again any ideas, But yeah, like I I
- 10:43Speaker 2: just feel like that's where where some of these things
- 10:45Speaker 2: he's doing are headed. And Yeah, I when I when
- 10:50Speaker 2: I found out about I was like, that is that's
- 10:54Speaker 2: just really stupid?
- 10:54Speaker 1: It really is. Well, like I said, I kind of
- 10:57Speaker 1: thought this was like an onion piece or something like that.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But then Jason still Or was writing about it. And
- 11:02Speaker 1: as Jason Stark is writing about this and I'm reading it,
- 11:06Speaker 1: Manfred talks about this and it sounds a whole lot
- 11:11Speaker 1: like more like he's talking about it seriously behind the scenes,
- 11:16Speaker 1: And I'm thinking to myself, what the hell are these
- 11:18Speaker 1: baseball owners and even general managers, Like, why are they
- 11:22Speaker 1: not putting the kai bosh to this and saying no,
- 11:24Speaker 1: this is fucking dumb. This is absolutely insane.
- 11:28Speaker 2: That are doing this. How about you if you weed
- 11:31Speaker 2: out the owners that clearly don't give a shit, right
- 11:34Speaker 2: and they're going to just make a buck, yes, Or
- 11:36Speaker 2: you have situations where I don't know your your team
- 11:39Speaker 2: can't play in its home stadium because the roof got
- 11:41Speaker 2: ripped off in a hurricane. Why don't you figure that
- 11:44Speaker 2: stuff out and get rid of the John Fishers of
- 11:47Speaker 2: the world of baseball ownership. Why don't you do that
- 11:51Speaker 2: stuff instead of worrying about dumb shit like this.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Exactly exactly, Well, I mean, i'd love to hear from
- 11:57Speaker 1: some folks out there what they think about this philadelph
- 12:00Speaker 1: Sports Table at gmail dot com. Shoot us off an email.
- 12:03Speaker 1: We'd love to read it here on the show and
- 12:05Speaker 1: respond to it. But another another thing that's gonna be
- 12:08Speaker 1: happening this, you know, I mean, they there was a
- 12:11Speaker 1: memo that was actually sent out earlier this year to
- 12:14Speaker 1: all thirty teams to really kind of shed some light
- 12:18Speaker 1: on where they want to take umpire calls in the
- 12:23Speaker 1: game of baseball. So beginning this coming season, I think, uh,
- 12:29Speaker 1: this coming season in Triple A, and I believe that
- 12:33Speaker 1: it's even gonna be happening in Actually, I should actually
- 12:36Speaker 1: say it's going to be happening in spring training. With
- 12:40Speaker 1: the majority of facilities, We're actually going to have robo
- 12:45Speaker 1: umpiring every now and again, Len, And it's gonna be
- 12:50Speaker 1: h It's gonna be something where there're gonna be a
- 12:53Speaker 1: certain amount of challenges. And I think this is something
- 12:56Speaker 1: that's interesting because you're taking something that it's it's legitimate
- 13:00Speaker 1: baseball discourse that why do we have umpires when we
- 13:05Speaker 1: can just have a robot doing this and and and
- 13:09Speaker 1: you know, a gun or whatever it is laser technology
- 13:14Speaker 1: showing us what balls and strikes are because there there's
- 13:17Speaker 1: a lot of times that games are determined by officiating
- 13:21Speaker 1: and by umpiring, and Major League Baseball is going to
- 13:25Speaker 1: be testing this out during spring training to see, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: if these robo ump ump calls are you know, going
- 13:32Speaker 1: to be effective with regard to the game of baseball.
- 13:35Speaker 1: This I can see a little bit more certainly than
- 13:37Speaker 1: the Golden at bat. But you know what, what are
- 13:40Speaker 1: your thoughts on where robot umpiring may start going because
- 13:44Speaker 1: of where or I should say, what we're actually going
- 13:47Speaker 1: to be seeing, you know, in spring training this year.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I I I part there's a part in this, like,
- 13:55Speaker 3: you know, I don't want to see you know, robots,
- 13:58Speaker 3: you know, in general across you know, the the American workforce.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I don't want to see the American worker you know,
- 14:05Speaker 2: out of jobs due to due to robots, you know.
- 14:07Speaker 2: But in this case, I think, you know, there's a
- 14:12Speaker 2: reason that there is a hashtag ump show you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: because these guys are have gotten way too big for
- 14:19Speaker 2: the bridges. A lot of them think that we're all
- 14:21Speaker 2: here to see them, and we're not. So I mean,
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'd love to see them get knocked down a peg. Absolutely.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Now there's in addition to the the automatic amps, there
- 14:34Speaker 2: is the challenge system, which I think we should also
- 14:37Speaker 2: talk about. Yeah, but yeah, I don't know. I would
- 14:42Speaker 2: like to go the challenge route first, see how that works,
- 14:46Speaker 2: and because I think it can be used almost as
- 14:48Speaker 2: a told you so or a punishment towards some of
- 14:51Speaker 2: these umps, and and you know, really, you know, just
- 14:55Speaker 2: you know, keep stats on, Okay, how many challenges for
- 14:59Speaker 2: this ump were called and how many of them you know,
- 15:02Speaker 2: were you know, man that that challenge is legitimate because
- 15:05Speaker 2: this un blew that call. I'd like to see stats
- 15:08Speaker 2: kept on that because I'd like to see you just
- 15:13Speaker 2: you know. What the reward is for the amps. Yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 2: they get to work the World Series and that's a
- 15:17Speaker 2: big prestige thing, and they work in the playoffs and
- 15:20Speaker 2: they make more money that way. But by and large,
- 15:23Speaker 2: it doesn't feel like there's any kind of repercussions for
- 15:26Speaker 2: umps that are bad. There's no accountability it took how
- 15:29Speaker 2: long to get you know what's his name? That they're
- 15:32Speaker 2: really horrible and Angel Hernandez out of the Yeah, and
- 15:34Speaker 2: there's still some bad ones in there, so you know
- 15:38Speaker 2: what kind of repercussions are there for these guys. I
- 15:40Speaker 2: would like to see this go. Let's go down this
- 15:42Speaker 2: challenge thing first, see if we can maybe maybe improve
- 15:47Speaker 2: the umps that way, you know, give them a chance
- 15:49Speaker 2: to see you're wrong here, you're wrong here, you're wrong here,
- 15:52Speaker 2: and then maybe that'll help them become better umpires. Go
- 15:56Speaker 2: that route first, and then if it's not working, then go, Okay,
- 16:00Speaker 2: we gave you guys a chance. We're going robot umpires.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Now screw you guys exactly. You know, best of luck
- 16:06Speaker 2: in your future endeavors. So my only concern with the
- 16:11Speaker 2: challenge is, and I from the article I read, is basically,
- 16:14Speaker 2: you know maybe two or three challenges per game, and
- 16:17Speaker 2: if you if you challenge the strike call and you
- 16:20Speaker 2: were correct, then you get to keep that challenge. So
- 16:22Speaker 2: you as long as you keep winning these challenges, you
- 16:25Speaker 2: could have an indefinite number of challenges. Theoretically. My only
- 16:29Speaker 2: concern about that is then that eats into the whole
- 16:32Speaker 2: pace of play thing that we were fixing with the
- 16:35Speaker 2: pitch clock. Yes, so you know that you're going to
- 16:38Speaker 2: have to find a way to go. Yes, you keep
- 16:41Speaker 2: winning these challenges, but you can't. You can't challenge every
- 16:45Speaker 2: pitch here there needs they're gonna have to. Yeah, they're
- 16:48Speaker 2: gonna have to figure that out.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, because like you can't. Could you imagine like
- 16:52Speaker 1: every every third inning or something like that. You know,
- 16:56Speaker 1: there's our every I mean every inning, you know, every
- 16:59Speaker 1: maybe like every other batter you're challenging. You know, you're
- 17:03Speaker 1: the pictures I challenge.
- 17:06Speaker 2: I think of those Yankees Red Sox playoff games from
- 17:09Speaker 2: like the early part of the two thousands. Every game
- 17:13Speaker 2: turned into a five or six hour affair because they
- 17:16Speaker 2: were microman and and and that's what I'm afraid it's
- 17:18Speaker 2: going to turn into one of those type things. So
- 17:22Speaker 2: you know, yeah, I want to avoid that at all costs.
- 17:25Speaker 2: So they're they're gonna have to figure some stuff out there.
- 17:28Speaker 2: So I would go to the challenger out first, and
- 17:29Speaker 2: then hey, if these guys aren't getting better, then sorry
- 17:34Speaker 2: you're out. Because we see it all the time. You know,
- 17:37Speaker 2: you watch a game and they've they've got that box now,
- 17:40Speaker 2: you know, on the on the TV screen and it's
- 17:43Speaker 2: just like that picture was clearly outside like how is
- 17:45Speaker 2: he calling? This is strike? So you know, it would
- 17:49Speaker 2: be nice to as a fan be able to go
- 17:52Speaker 2: that that was a bullshit call and then okay, then
- 17:54Speaker 2: they challenge it and then okay, good, I'm I'm not insane.
- 17:57Speaker 2: That wasn't fact ball, you know that kind of thing.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you. Uh, let's try the challenge
- 18:04Speaker 1: first and then maybe, you know, if you gotta hold
- 18:07Speaker 1: I think officials and umpires just in every sport need
- 18:11Speaker 1: to be held more accountable. And I know, you know,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you can only maybe slap these umpires on the risks,
- 18:18Speaker 1: and we don't even know if they get slapped on
- 18:20Speaker 1: the risks. Actually, you know, if the majority of the time,
- 18:22Speaker 1: it'd be nice to know that. I do understand from
- 18:25Speaker 1: a pr standpoint, why these organizations and sports leagues don't
- 18:31Speaker 1: necessarily make that public if it if it happens at all,
- 18:35Speaker 1: because like the public could just completely just turn on
- 18:39Speaker 1: officiating to the point where it would be worse than
- 18:41Speaker 1: it actually is now. I think, however, there needs to
- 18:44Speaker 1: be some sort of accountability. There just has to be
- 18:47Speaker 1: some sort of accountability as athletes get better at their sports.
- 18:51Speaker 2: And in any you know, boss employee relationship. You know,
- 18:56Speaker 2: let's say you have an employee that's performing poorly. You
- 19:00Speaker 2: know you have you know you want. If you're gonna
- 19:04Speaker 2: get rid of them, you have to be careful about
- 19:05Speaker 2: it because you don't want them coming back saying I
- 19:08Speaker 2: was fired onjustly. So a lot of times what a
- 19:11Speaker 2: boss will do is, Okay, I'm going to create a
- 19:13Speaker 2: paper trail. I'm going to create a document thing where
- 19:16Speaker 2: I can go into any kind of grievance and just
- 19:18Speaker 2: say this, this, this, this, this, then this happened after
- 19:22Speaker 2: we talk to them, and the continue to happen. That's
- 19:25Speaker 2: why they're getting free out. So and I think that's
- 19:28Speaker 2: what this could be. Because you know, the the the
- 19:31Speaker 2: MLB umps, they have their own union, which obviously there's
- 19:35Speaker 2: gonna be huge grievances if you know, people start losing
- 19:38Speaker 2: jobs there and you can say, hey, look we put
- 19:40Speaker 2: in this challenge system. We we have documented proof now
- 19:45Speaker 2: that your guys are consistently wrong. And we tried to
- 19:47Speaker 2: work and and and make you work with you guys
- 19:50Speaker 2: and be better. You guys suck, So you're gonna go
- 19:53Speaker 2: and and then there could because you can, you can,
- 19:57Speaker 2: you can argue, you know, about different things. But when
- 19:59Speaker 2: you've got that paper trail in front of you, when
- 20:01Speaker 2: you've got documented evidence in front of you, what are
- 20:04Speaker 2: you gonna say?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Exactly exactly?
- 20:06Speaker 2: That's that's why I'd be looking to go go down
- 20:09Speaker 2: that route.
- 20:10Speaker 1: All right, Well, it's gonna be interesting to follow these
- 20:14Speaker 1: these proposals, these things that have been floated. My god,
- 20:17Speaker 1: the golden appat run. It can't happen, dude, it can't happen.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It just can't.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I'm sure it will.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Oh my god. Well, we're gonna keep tabs on it
- 20:27Speaker 1: here at the PSD podcast show for sure. But uh,
- 20:29Speaker 1: before we go to our first break, we wanted to
- 20:31Speaker 1: get into some Philadelphia Union talk, Lens, since we have
- 20:34Speaker 1: you on the show here, and uh gotta say, I
- 20:38Speaker 1: was not necessarily surprised that Jim Curtin was fired longest
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know, tenured, of course, you know union coach. He
- 20:45Speaker 1: just did a lot for the team, did a lot
- 20:47Speaker 1: for the organization. Folks. If you want to hear a
- 20:50Speaker 1: very detailed conversation about this, go back in the podcast
- 20:53Speaker 1: feed to our table talk show. This past week where
- 20:55Speaker 1: we got into some post mortem about this Union season,
- 20:59Speaker 1: the two twenty four season. But len Philadelphia Union, they're
- 21:03Speaker 1: gonna be looking for a new coach and that means
- 21:05Speaker 1: a lot of different changes are gonna be coming to
- 21:07Speaker 1: this team. The one thing that we talked about on
- 21:10Speaker 1: the Table Talk pod was the fact that Aleandre Badoya
- 21:14Speaker 1: Kai Wagner that their negotiations right now to potentially come
- 21:18Speaker 1: back to the team. It'd be great to have Kai
- 21:21Speaker 1: Wagner back. Aleandre Bdoya, as much as people have loved
- 21:25Speaker 1: him over the years, having that dual role of being
- 21:29Speaker 1: in the front office and also playing on the field
- 21:31Speaker 1: too might not be the best in our buddy. Josh
- 21:35Speaker 1: Schuster of Philadelphia soccernow dot com made some really good
- 21:38Speaker 1: points about that, quite frankly, and I really do agree
- 21:41Speaker 1: with Josh that maybe Bedoya just needs to stay in
- 21:44Speaker 1: the front office at this point, if that's gonna be
- 21:46Speaker 1: your job, if that's gonna be where you want to
- 21:49Speaker 1: contribute most to the organization moving forward, as they're obviously
- 21:52Speaker 1: going to be in this any quote rebuild type of
- 21:55Speaker 1: mode after this season. There's a lot of guys not
- 21:58Speaker 1: coming back on this roster. Uh I think that needs
- 22:03Speaker 1: to happen from from Bedoya standpoint, sign Wagner. But there's
- 22:08Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of changes coming to this team. Line.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Well yeah, with the Badoya thing, I mean that just
- 22:13Speaker 2: screams conflict of interest. I mean having somebody, you know,
- 22:17Speaker 2: be I don't know what kind of role he's supposed
- 22:19Speaker 2: to have in the front office, if it's like, you know,
- 22:22Speaker 2: consultant to the GM or to the you know, the
- 22:26Speaker 2: sporting director or whatever, you know, I don't know, but
- 22:30Speaker 2: that just like to me, I would feel like, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 2: if I was a player, you know, he'd be watching
- 22:36Speaker 2: me and as a member of the front office. Now
- 22:39Speaker 2: he's you know, yeah, I'm a.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Front office specialist. I think like player development in front
- 22:44Speaker 1: office specialist.
- 22:45Speaker 2: That to me, you can't be in both roles. That
- 22:49Speaker 2: to me is a recipe for disaster, for mistrust, uh honestly,
- 22:54Speaker 2: you know, and and just insecurity among the players. I
- 22:58Speaker 2: just I don't like to thought of that all.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not a big fan of that either. But
- 23:04Speaker 1: I have no idea what team is going to be,
- 23:06Speaker 1: or I should say, what coach is going to be
- 23:08Speaker 1: coming to this team. It's gonna be bizarre. Watching this team,
- 23:12Speaker 1: you know, whether we're gonna be watching on Apple TV plus,
- 23:14Speaker 1: where I've really enjoyed watching this team. I like what
- 23:17Speaker 1: Apple TV is actually done with their Major League soccer programming.
- 23:22Speaker 1: But we're gonna We're gonna see some different stuff from
- 23:24Speaker 1: this team. And will the talent on this team be
- 23:29Speaker 1: able to reflect whatever the new coach wants them to
- 23:31Speaker 1: do on the field. I mean, and that's that's really
- 23:33Speaker 1: going to be that big off season issue that glare.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Are they going to be able to do what this
- 23:41Speaker 1: new coach and whoever that is going to be, what
- 23:44Speaker 1: type of position that coach wants to put them in
- 23:46Speaker 1: on the field, if the talent's gonna be there to
- 23:48Speaker 1: actually do that. So Jim Curtin probably gonna get swooped
- 23:52Speaker 1: up by somebody sooner rather than later. But I don't know.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Twenty twenty five could be a rough go with this
- 23:59Speaker 1: Union team teams Land. I think it could be rough
- 24:02Speaker 1: next year.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I love nothing more than to see Curtin hook on
- 24:07Speaker 2: somewhere else as as as a coach and and just
- 24:12Speaker 2: consistently win. Yes, I would, because I think it's something
- 24:16Speaker 2: that and maybe they don't care, which is certainly a possibility.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Maybe you know, Sugarman and Ernst Tanner, the sporting director.
- 24:24Speaker 2: You know, maybe maybe they just won't care one way
- 24:27Speaker 2: or the other, but it would be really nice for
- 24:29Speaker 2: them to see, here's how the talented coach that you
- 24:32Speaker 2: had when working with, you know, actual talent, here's how
- 24:37Speaker 2: he performs. And because they don't put into this team,
- 24:40Speaker 2: they don't put enough into this team, right, and that's
- 24:44Speaker 2: the problem. And I'll be interested to see what kind
- 24:46Speaker 2: of coach they get because to me, you know, I
- 24:50Speaker 2: guess if you're I guess if you're a coach that's
- 24:52Speaker 2: coming up. I mean, any MLS job would be oh man,
- 24:55Speaker 2: I'm I'm the manager of an MLS club. You know,
- 24:58Speaker 2: there's a certain something to that. But you know, if
- 25:01Speaker 2: you're an experience manager that's been our coach or whatever
- 25:04Speaker 2: the term is, that's been around for a while, you
- 25:06Speaker 2: know when you're walking into a bad spot, whereas maybe
- 25:10Speaker 2: a younger guy is just too excited about the opportunity.
- 25:12Speaker 2: So I think they're going to get a young guy
- 25:14Speaker 2: for that reason, because I think anybody that's had some
- 25:17Speaker 2: time in the game that understands what's happening with the
- 25:21Speaker 2: with the organization, I think they're going to look at
- 25:24Speaker 2: that and go, hmm, I don't know if I want
- 25:26Speaker 2: to go to Philadelphia.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I think they're gonna have a hard time finding an
- 25:30Speaker 2: experience manager for that reason, because I just I don't
- 25:33Speaker 2: think it's an attractive situation.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that's going to be interesting for sure. Well, folks,
- 25:39Speaker 1: if you are new to listening to the show, subscribe

- 26:08Speaker 1: your soul. You took a break from social media and
- 26:11Speaker 1: apparently you've really been enjoying it. Maybe I should do it.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's uh the first little bit because like the
- 26:19Speaker 2: first couple of days after I got off Twitter, I
- 26:21Speaker 2: kept like going to like not going to the app,
- 26:24Speaker 2: but like going where the app used to be. Yeah, like, oh,
- 26:27Speaker 2: that's right, I can't scroll through and see what's going on. Yes,
- 26:30Speaker 2: And then over time it's just been like, I don't know,
- 26:33Speaker 2: I've been I've been happier since I since I got
- 26:36Speaker 2: off it.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Everybody says that, everybody who gets off Twitter or even
- 26:41Speaker 1: social platforms in general say they're actually happier about it.
- 26:46Speaker 2: It's amazing, it's it's better the world. The world was
- 26:49Speaker 2: better before we were all connected, before you knew every
- 26:54Speaker 2: thought that every idiot in the world had, the world
- 26:57Speaker 2: was a better place.
- 26:58Speaker 1: It was.
- 26:59Speaker 2: It was.
- 26:59Speaker 1: But if you want to follow us folks on the Twitter,
- 27:01Speaker 1: slash x at exactly at Philadelphia pst at Jeffrey Underscore Warren,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I'm over a blue sky, you can actually uh search
- 27:11Speaker 1: me out over there. Just search out Jeff Jeff Warren
- 27:14Speaker 1: and uh we're on Instagram as well. We are on
- 27:18Speaker 1: and we're on other social platforms too. All right, we're
- 27:20Speaker 1: gonna take a break, and when we get back, I
- 27:22Speaker 1: gonna get into Flyers, a little bit of college football
- 27:24Speaker 1: and some Eagles talk. To take that break. We'll be
- 27:27Speaker 1: right back. All right. We are back, and Lynn we
- 27:31Speaker 1: gotta get into this Philadelphia Flyers team. Wanted to talk
- 27:34Speaker 1: to you about, you know, how this team has really
- 27:37Speaker 1: been performing. Seems like they may be getting back perhaps
- 27:40Speaker 1: to their twenty twenty three twenty twenty four form. I mean,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it was a rough start to the season, but I
- 27:46Speaker 1: gotta say it appears that, you know, some of the
- 27:49Speaker 1: goaltending issues that have haunted this organization for the past,
- 27:51Speaker 1: you know, thirty thirty five years, you know, maybe maybe
- 27:55Speaker 1: a thing of the past. Here, sim Erson having a
- 27:57Speaker 1: pretty good season, Ivan Fanotov having a pretty good season
- 28:01Speaker 1: thus far, and this team is really coming together in
- 28:05Speaker 1: a lot of ways. I think a lot of the
- 28:06Speaker 1: lines are really just starting to solidify themselves. And I
- 28:11Speaker 1: think John Tortorella, of course, is going to continue to
- 28:13Speaker 1: tinker here and there, you know, around the edges. But
- 28:16Speaker 1: I think overall, this Flyer season has been again getting
- 28:21Speaker 1: fun to watch as the as the quote rebuild, and
- 28:24Speaker 1: when I say rebuild on this platform, folks, I know
- 28:27Speaker 1: that this organization didn't do too much during this offseason.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I know that they didn't bring in much talent, but
- 28:35Speaker 1: what we want to see is growth from certain players.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I mean, you have got a player like Travis Sandheim,
- 28:39Speaker 1: who's having an incredible, incredible career. Two years ago, we
- 28:44Speaker 1: thought he was out the door. John Tortorella probably thought
- 28:47Speaker 1: he was out the door. Tortorella didn't want to have
- 28:49Speaker 1: anything basically do with him two years ago. Now, all
- 28:52Speaker 1: of a sudden, Travis Sandheim is having a career year
- 28:56Speaker 1: and is really one of the leaders on this team. Len,
- 28:59Speaker 1: we're seeing the growth and development of certain guys still
- 29:03Speaker 1: after a certain period, after a long period of time
- 29:05Speaker 1: of following a lot of these guys. Met Ve Mitchkov
- 29:08Speaker 1: has been fun and electric to watch as well. Again,
- 29:13Speaker 1: I think we're starting to see this fun Flyer season
- 29:15Speaker 1: here and starting to see certain guys develop and where
- 29:19Speaker 1: they may be put perhaps in the future.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, there's definitely some interesting stuff going on with
- 29:30Speaker 2: the team. I feel like just in general in terms
- 29:32Speaker 2: of like just maybe just their name throughout the league,
- 29:37Speaker 2: I think maybe there's a little bit more respect. I
- 29:38Speaker 2: know that there's the Four Nations tournament that's coming up
- 29:42Speaker 2: between you know, Canada, the US, oh yes, and Finland.
- 29:46Speaker 2: There was there's two guys from on the on the
- 29:49Speaker 2: Canadian team from the Flyers, both the Travises Ye Connectney
- 29:52Speaker 2: and Sandheim, and I wasn't surprised to see Connectney, but
- 29:56Speaker 2: I was very pleasantly surprised to see Sandheim on that team.
- 30:00Speaker 2: And then you have a restera line and is on Finland.
- 30:03Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean it's good to like, I don't know,
- 30:08Speaker 2: it just felt like for a couple of years like
- 30:11Speaker 2: they were just a complete afterthought, like none of those
- 30:14Speaker 2: guys would be on any of those teams. And you know,
- 30:17Speaker 2: you look at the year that connect Me's havn't He's
- 30:20Speaker 2: over a point per game player. He's got thirty points
- 30:23Speaker 2: in twenty five games. He's I think fifteenth in the
- 30:26Speaker 2: league in scoring. Right now, are tied for fifteenth in
- 30:28Speaker 2: the league in scoring. You know, you've got mitchkov has
- 30:33Speaker 2: got nineteen points in twenty three games, so he's almost
- 30:36Speaker 2: a point per game player. So you're you're seeing some
- 30:39Speaker 2: you know, high, you know, high level scoring going on.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Katurier has looked really good since he's kind of come
- 30:46Speaker 2: back from that injury that he had last healthy. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 2: it's it's been noticeable. He had a nice overtime winner
- 30:53Speaker 2: against Nashville, so yeah, I mean it's fun and you know,
- 30:57Speaker 2: you can tell especially mitchkoff Man. He loves that at
- 31:00Speaker 2: three on three overtime situation, all that open ice he
- 31:04Speaker 2: gets to work with, and I mean he's scored a
- 31:06Speaker 2: couple overtime you know, game winning goals. So yeah, it's
- 31:10Speaker 2: been it's been fun to watch so far. They're right now,
- 31:13Speaker 2: they're in a good position. It makes me curious for
- 31:16Speaker 2: you know, I've heard a number of things of like,
- 31:19Speaker 2: you know, guys that might be dangled at the trade deadline,
- 31:23Speaker 2: the Scott Lawton's and wrist the lines of the world. Yes,
- 31:26Speaker 2: is that something that they're going to do if they're
- 31:29Speaker 2: legitimately in in playoff contention, which as it stands right now,
- 31:32Speaker 2: they're they're the the second wildcard team, I believe. So yeah,
- 31:37Speaker 2: I mean that that's that's gonna be some decisions they
- 31:39Speaker 2: have to make. I still want to see some growth
- 31:41Speaker 2: from some of the younger guys. I like to see
- 31:45Speaker 2: a little bit more out of Forrester. I like to
- 31:48Speaker 2: see a little bit more out of Farrabee. Tip it's
- 31:51Speaker 2: been I think I think he's been decent, but you know,
- 31:55Speaker 2: I kind of expected a little bit more out of
- 31:58Speaker 2: him so far. Brink is as pleasantly surprised me with
- 32:03Speaker 2: with kind of what he's been doing. But yeah, so
- 32:08Speaker 2: there's a lot of young guys that you'd like to
- 32:09Speaker 2: see maybe take a little bit more of a step
- 32:12Speaker 2: forward before I really feel good about Okay, we have
- 32:16Speaker 2: the young talented core that i'd hope we had, because
- 32:19Speaker 2: I still, you know, again, I still think that it
- 32:23Speaker 2: would behoove them to have a high pick in there,
- 32:25Speaker 2: and I know that they've got a few first round
- 32:28Speaker 2: picks in this draft. I think they're just going to
- 32:30Speaker 2: have to hit on a couple of guys if they're
- 32:31Speaker 2: going to go down this route and make the playoffs.
- 32:33Speaker 2: They're just going to have to hit on some guys
- 32:35Speaker 2: that other people miss in the first round, you know,
- 32:38Speaker 2: in order to just keep that pipeline of young talent going.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Unless we start to see the Farabees and Forresters and
- 32:47Speaker 2: Tippets of the world, Like, prove to me that you're
- 32:49Speaker 2: a you're a top six player, Like that's what I want.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I want you to prove to me you're a top
- 32:55Speaker 2: six player. Otherwise, you know, I have to wonder about
- 32:59Speaker 2: the seal of this team in the future. So we'll
- 33:02Speaker 2: see what they do.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Right, One thing, I wanted to mention really quick before
- 33:07Speaker 1: before we move on here, but with regard to this
- 33:09Speaker 1: Flyers team and with regard to mattfe Mitchkov. Okay, if
- 33:12Speaker 1: you remember well before that draft where he was drafted
- 33:16Speaker 1: by the Flyers, some pundits were writing that Mitchkov had
- 33:22Speaker 1: some character issues with his team at the time, SKA
- 33:26Speaker 1: and the KHL, even so much so some of his
- 33:29Speaker 1: teammates then actually had to come to his defense via
- 33:32Speaker 1: some interviews to debunk those rumors. And I just wanted
- 33:36Speaker 1: to throw out there because I haven't heard much of this.
- 33:38Speaker 1: As you know, as Mitchkov is now here in the
- 33:41Speaker 1: US playing for the Flyers, and again, as I use
- 33:44Speaker 1: that word electric, he's been absolutely electric on the ice.
- 33:48Speaker 1: It turns out that those rumors were exactly that they
- 33:51Speaker 1: were rumors. I mean, this guy has been a team player,
- 33:54Speaker 1: and I think it really sucks every now and then
- 33:58Speaker 1: when pundits analysts they get some sort of quote story
- 34:03Speaker 1: behind the scenes, they bring things out, they talk about, oh,
- 34:07Speaker 1: this guy could be a character problem. We see it
- 34:09Speaker 1: with the NFL draft.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Lend.
- 34:11Speaker 1: You know, we hear about it in baseball every now
- 34:13Speaker 1: and again. You hear about it in every single sport
- 34:16Speaker 1: basketball too, and sometimes it just it's just crap and rumors.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And I think we saw that with Matt Veab mitchkov here.
- 34:25Speaker 1: You know, the character stuff that was talked about him
- 34:27Speaker 1: before he was drafted to the Flyers. It was all rumors.
- 34:31Speaker 1: It was just all rumors and innuendo and people probably
- 34:34Speaker 1: trying to get clicks. This guy's been a really good
- 34:37Speaker 1: teammate thus far. I just wanted to throw that out
- 34:39Speaker 1: there because I don't think too too many folks are
- 34:41Speaker 1: talking about it at this point. He's been great. He's
- 34:44Speaker 1: been fantastic thus far, and a great teammate. And like
- 34:47Speaker 1: I said, I just wanted to throw that out there.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it seems like everybody on the on
- 34:52Speaker 2: the Flyers loves them. Yeah, I mean yeah, you know,
- 34:55Speaker 2: so I don't really think there's much for an issue there. Honestly.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I think that is more people from what in Russia
- 35:01Speaker 2: that wanted him to maybe maybe deflate his value because
- 35:04Speaker 2: they wanted him to be in Russia for as long
- 35:07Speaker 2: as humanly possible, and you know, I'm sure they didn't
- 35:11Speaker 2: want to see him leave after the one season with SKA,
- 35:14Speaker 2: But you know, that's what happened. But I think maybe
- 35:16Speaker 2: that was like, Okay, if we can maybe deflate his
- 35:20Speaker 2: value a little bit, maybe he'll be over here a
- 35:21Speaker 2: little bit longer. Yeah, that was my thought on And
- 35:25Speaker 2: you know that talk starts there in Russia, and maybe
- 35:28Speaker 2: he gets picked up by a couple of people, you know,
- 35:31Speaker 2: in the Western hemisphere, and you know, maybe that happens.
- 35:34Speaker 2: But it wouldn't surprise me if all that talk started
- 35:37Speaker 2: in Russia.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 1: All right, well, good talk there about the Flyers. Let's
- 35:41Speaker 1: move on to some brief college football talk here, Lenn.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I don't really get to talk college football with Eric,
- 35:48Speaker 1: but I'm just dude, I am so pumped for the
- 35:51Speaker 1: twelve team college football playoff bracket. I mean, as of now,
- 35:55Speaker 1: as we're recording this here on Wednesday, December fourth, as
- 35:59Speaker 1: things are today, number one would be Oregon. Number two
- 36:03Speaker 1: would be Texas. Number three would be SMU, number four
- 36:07Speaker 1: Boise State. And to kind of go down the list
- 36:10Speaker 1: how these matchups would would take place, Tennessee would face
- 36:14Speaker 1: Ohio State, Arizona State would face Penn State, Alabama would
- 36:18Speaker 1: face Notre Dame, Indiana would face Georgia in that first round.
- 36:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of good games there in those four games,
- 36:26Speaker 1: a lot of good games.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Man.
- 36:27Speaker 1: And I will say, you know, we went to Penn State,
- 36:31Speaker 1: Penn State play in Arizona State. Of course I would
- 36:33Speaker 1: take Penn State, but boy, Penn State against Boise State
- 36:36Speaker 1: would be one hell of a game. It really would be. Listen.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I gotta say this. I'd mean people may be listening
- 36:43Speaker 1: to this after Saturday, after the Big Ten National Championship. No,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I don't think Penn State is gonna win the game.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I think They're gonna give it a good fight. It's
- 36:51Speaker 1: gonna be on a neutral field in Indianapolis, I believe,
- 36:55Speaker 1: and I think Oregon's gonna end up winning. But Lynn,
- 36:59Speaker 1: I cannot wait to see some of these teams play
- 37:02Speaker 1: each other because this is good. This is going to
- 37:04Speaker 1: be really good, compelling and entertaining college football when you
- 37:08Speaker 1: look at these brackets right now, where we're at here
- 37:11Speaker 1: in December, even if they change a little bit, because
- 37:13Speaker 1: you've got a couple of teams that are on the
- 37:15Speaker 1: bubble with Miami and Ole Miss, they're on the bubble,
- 37:17Speaker 1: they could potentially make it here. Things have to work
- 37:19Speaker 1: out for them with other teams winning and losing. So
- 37:23Speaker 1: I'm really pumped for this at this point.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's definitely interesting. I wanted to ask you
- 37:30Speaker 2: something I wanted to get into about this, is, you know,
- 37:32Speaker 2: talking about scenarios and things like that, is you know, yeah,
- 37:36Speaker 2: Penn State is playing Oregon in the Big Ten Championship game.
- 37:40Speaker 2: We do expect Oregon to win that game. If they do,
- 37:44Speaker 2: how far do you think that drops Penn State in
- 37:47Speaker 2: the in the rankings? Because currently their fifth, how far
- 37:50Speaker 2: do you think that drops they're seeding if at all?
- 37:53Speaker 1: I would think, See, it's it's interesting. Excuse me. It's
- 37:58Speaker 1: interesting because of Penn State beating whom I think, Oh
- 38:05Speaker 1: my gosh, who DoD they recently beat? Or no, Ohio
- 38:08Speaker 1: State beat Penn State, right, so if they are if
- 38:13Speaker 1: the rankings go, it's I mean, I would say they
- 38:15Speaker 1: would probably fall to like eighth somewhere around there.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I would think, Okay, so you think they could fall
- 38:21Speaker 2: the way to eight?
- 38:22Speaker 1: I think they could. I think that I could either
- 38:24Speaker 1: seventh or eighth I think is where they could actually fall.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I yeah, I think they I think they could actually
- 38:32Speaker 1: so if they do, but if they beat Oregon, I
- 38:35Speaker 1: mean they're probably looking at number three.
- 38:38Speaker 2: You know. Yeah, It's funny because you know, where I
- 38:41Speaker 2: work and live, like, you know, Penn State is the
- 38:44Speaker 2: home team, whether you went to that to that school
- 38:47Speaker 2: or not. You know, you know, there's yeah, professionally, you know, yeah,
- 38:50Speaker 2: I mean there's Philly fans, and there's Pittsburgh fans, and
- 38:53Speaker 2: there's Baltimore fans here in central Pennsylvania. But you know,
- 38:57Speaker 2: Penn State is kind of like the overwhelming uniting thing.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Especially where I work. I hear people talk about all
- 39:02Speaker 2: the time. One of the guys that is, you know,
- 39:06Speaker 2: at my terminal. It doesn't work in my building, but
- 39:09Speaker 2: he played under Paterno, so he you know, he definitely,
- 39:13Speaker 2: you know, is a huge Penn State fan. And I
- 39:15Speaker 2: was talking to him about it, and it almost sounded
- 39:19Speaker 2: like not that he wanted Oregon to win, but I
- 39:22Speaker 2: could hear it in his voice, like, man, I really
- 39:24Speaker 2: want to go to that that that home playoff game
- 39:28Speaker 2: because it's only the first round before it goes to
- 39:29Speaker 2: neutral sites. So like like I could hear in his
- 39:33Speaker 2: voice like, yeah, it'd be great if they won the
- 39:35Speaker 2: Big Ten, but man, I want to go to that
- 39:37Speaker 2: first round game. Like so it's an interesting conundrum. So yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 2: I don't know, it would be interesting. The other thing
- 39:44Speaker 2: that is interesting for me with regard to Penn State is,
- 39:48Speaker 2: you know if they if they do host in the
- 39:52Speaker 2: first round, it's already snowing up there, it is, So
- 39:55Speaker 2: you know, how would it be if an Arizona State
- 39:58Speaker 2: or a Tennessee or an alle Bama. How would it
- 40:01Speaker 2: be if any of those teams had to come up
- 40:03Speaker 2: north and play in those conditions? Would that affect them
- 40:06Speaker 2: too much? Right? Right?
- 40:08Speaker 1: Ah, that's that's like the great unknown. It really is
- 40:12Speaker 1: the great unknow. But I go back to go back
- 40:13Speaker 1: to your initial question though, Lehn, I actually do think
- 40:16Speaker 1: that Penn State would drop behind Notre Dame if they lose.
- 40:20Speaker 2: They will just because if it wasn't Notre Dame, if
- 40:23Speaker 2: it was some school that wasn't like name brand or whatever. Right,
- 40:27Speaker 2: you know, that's one thing. But because it's Notre Dame,
- 40:30Speaker 2: I have a feeling that they're looking for a reason
- 40:34Speaker 2: to put to bump them up, and I think that
- 40:36Speaker 2: that would be Penn State losing, like oh great, we
- 40:40Speaker 2: can you know, bump Notre Dame up one more spot?
- 40:42Speaker 2: Like I just I don't know. Maybe maybe that's just
- 40:45Speaker 2: me being haterish, but you know, it's just how I
- 40:48Speaker 2: feel like.
- 40:48Speaker 1: You know, well, I think because I think because I
- 40:51Speaker 1: think Penn State would drop behind Notre Dame because of
- 40:54Speaker 1: Penn State's lack of a I guess quote quality win
- 40:58Speaker 1: would not make up for their two laws. His Notre
- 41:00Speaker 1: Dame's lost in Northern Illinois if you remember that, I
- 41:02Speaker 1: mean that was bad. But even they were Yeah, even
- 41:05Speaker 1: their win over Army I think is better than anything
- 41:07Speaker 1: Penn State probably is done up to this point in
- 41:10Speaker 1: terms of a.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Big time win Illinois.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I don't know that's true, that that is true.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I mean I think they would go behind. Of course,
- 41:19Speaker 1: they would go behind Ohio State because they lost to
- 41:21Speaker 1: Ohio State. They probably dropped down.
- 41:23Speaker 2: I think the number if they're both two loss teams
- 41:25Speaker 2: and they lost to Ohio State. I as much as
- 41:28Speaker 2: they hate Ohio State, I can find I can follow
- 41:31Speaker 2: the logic there at least, Yes.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Exactly, God, I would I hope Ohio State is at
- 41:35Speaker 1: good old, good old soy sauce hair and is I'm
- 41:40Speaker 1: really despising him.
- 41:42Speaker 2: If if if they don't win their first round game,
- 41:46Speaker 2: I think he's gone.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, could you imagine inheriting that inheriting that
- 41:51Speaker 1: program from where it was, and he just hasn't been
- 41:54Speaker 1: able to beat Michigan. I was, I was genuinely rooting
- 41:57Speaker 1: for Michigan past I really want.
- 42:01Speaker 2: True, did not completely hate them.
- 42:05Speaker 3: That is true.
- 42:06Speaker 1: That is true. Well, buddy, we definitely got to get
- 42:09Speaker 1: into some Eagles talk here too, so uh, you know,
- 42:13Speaker 1: and I know it's running a little laid here and stuff,
- 42:15Speaker 1: but okay, Eagles here. I cannot believe we are at
- 42:20Speaker 1: this point in time. Like I remember, you know, Eric
- 42:22Speaker 1: and I were going through a few weeks ago, we
- 42:26Speaker 1: were going through our season predictions and we were just like,
- 42:30Speaker 1: you know, the Eagles, I mean, maybe they'll win a
- 42:32Speaker 1: playoff game, you know, maybe they'll get into the playoffs.
- 42:35Speaker 1: We thought they were gonna win the division, but it's like,
- 42:37Speaker 1: you know, maybe are they gonna go far in the playoffs?
- 42:40Speaker 1: Holy cow? Did we think number one defense in the
- 42:43Speaker 1: league at this point? No, nobody did too. I don't
- 42:46Speaker 1: be talking to BLG about this too. We had concerns
- 42:49Speaker 1: about the linebacker position, We had concerns about the pass rush.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I was really concerned about that. Since Week six, they're
- 42:57Speaker 1: number one in the league and just about every category
- 43:00Speaker 1: on defense. At this point, they're the number one defense
- 43:02Speaker 1: in the league. Not in a million years did I
- 43:04Speaker 1: think Vic Fangio would be able to do this with
- 43:07Speaker 1: this roster. Sure, the roster is very, very talented, but dude,
- 43:11Speaker 1: I did not think it was going to get to
- 43:13Speaker 1: this point. I feel like the rug is going to
- 43:16Speaker 1: get pulled out from under us, kind of like it
- 43:17Speaker 1: did last year. I don't think they're gonna collapse by
- 43:20Speaker 1: any stretch of the imagination, because it is a completely
- 43:23Speaker 1: different feel, right, It's a different feel, It's a different vibe.
- 43:26Speaker 1: This team is geling. You can see it when they
- 43:29Speaker 1: go down to Baltimore and handily beat them. Of course,
- 43:33Speaker 1: they didn't look good in the first quarter. They never
- 43:35Speaker 1: look good in the first quarter, But you want to
- 43:36Speaker 1: talk about a team that bounces back after three quarters, Like,
- 43:39Speaker 1: holy freaking cow, I'm amazed at where this team is
- 43:43Speaker 1: at right now. I love it.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I win it was And it's funny because I was
- 43:47Speaker 2: thinking back to like, you know, okay, we did our
- 43:49Speaker 2: show at the beginning of the season. I was like, ah,
- 43:52Speaker 2: I think they'll win the division, and then they get
- 43:54Speaker 2: they start the season two and two, and you're just like, right,
- 43:57Speaker 2: I don't know if they're that good. I remember we
- 44:00Speaker 2: had conversations at one point, you know, in our text
- 44:03Speaker 2: group of like, man, I think you got to get
- 44:05Speaker 2: rid of Sirianni asap and things like that. And now
- 44:08Speaker 2: they're ten and two, Like it's it's completely wild. I
- 44:12Speaker 2: will say that I have a feeling this week that
- 44:18Speaker 2: you know, I think they're gonna beat Carolina. But I
- 44:21Speaker 2: have a feeling it's gonna be one of those you
- 44:23Speaker 2: know how every now and again we had one of
- 44:24Speaker 2: those post game shows where yes they won, but it
- 44:27Speaker 2: doesn't feel like a win, right, Yeah, Because I just
- 44:30Speaker 2: I don't know. I have a feeling they're gonna this week,
- 44:32Speaker 2: they're gonna go, ah, it's just Carolina. Yeah, and they're
- 44:34Speaker 2: just gonna let them hang around too long. I don't
- 44:37Speaker 2: know why, but you know, and hopefully I'm wrong, Hopefully
- 44:39Speaker 2: they just come out and handle business.
- 44:41Speaker 1: But Caroline. Carolina has been playing decent football over the
- 44:43Speaker 1: past couple of weeks and almost beat the freaking Kansas
- 44:46Speaker 1: City Chiefs.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they have been. Yeah, but I mean, I
- 44:49Speaker 2: just I don't know. I just have a feeling that
- 44:51Speaker 2: that's gonna that's gonna be the case. Like we're gonna
- 44:54Speaker 2: it's gonna be like a win. That doesn't feel like
- 44:57Speaker 2: a win, but you know, but yeah, I mean listen
- 45:02Speaker 2: that that game against Baltimore, Like I said, statement win,
- 45:06Speaker 2: that's I mean, they're impressive. I don't know how you
- 45:10Speaker 2: can't have them in the you know, if you're picking
- 45:13Speaker 2: out four teams that could win the Super Bowl, I
- 45:16Speaker 2: don't know how you don't have them as one of them.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Right now, They're an absolute Super Bowl contender. They are.
- 45:20Speaker 1: They are, especially because of the defense. How many years
- 45:23Speaker 1: we've been talking about the fact, no matter what you
- 45:26Speaker 1: do during the regular season, especially on offense, it's been
- 45:30Speaker 1: a passing league. But we see how important running backs
- 45:33Speaker 1: have now been over the past two years. Even though
- 45:35Speaker 1: it is a passing league in general, when you look
- 45:39Speaker 1: at what defenses are able to do during the playoffs,
- 45:42Speaker 1: that's inevitably where you win games in playoff games, I
- 45:45Speaker 1: should say, And the Eagles are right at the top.
- 45:48Speaker 1: They are the cream of the crop in terms of defenses.
- 45:51Speaker 1: And it's consistent week after week. I mean, there's no
- 45:54Speaker 1: drop off here, and like you said, there may be
- 45:57Speaker 1: a few hiccups here and there. Against Carolina pant they
- 46:00Speaker 1: still got to play the Steelers, who are a pretty
- 46:02Speaker 1: good team. There may be a couple hiccups there as well,
- 46:05Speaker 1: but the schedule is extremely favorable. They play some real
- 46:08Speaker 1: crappy teams down the stretch here where Saquon Barkley should
- 46:13Speaker 1: be eating as he has been, and I man, getting
- 46:19Speaker 1: a first round by thin could I.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Think it happly? Really nice? I mean they could absolutely
- 46:25Speaker 2: use that. Yeah, I agree, I really. I mean it's
- 46:30Speaker 2: hard for me to see anybody outside of Detroit and
- 46:34Speaker 2: Philadelphia representing the NFC in the Super Bowl, right yeah,
- 46:38Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. Maybe a team catches fire
- 46:41Speaker 2: at the end. I don't know, but you know, right now,
- 46:45Speaker 2: those two look like, hands down, the two most complete
- 46:48Speaker 2: teams in the NFC.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely, well, buddy, I'm gonna let you go here.
- 46:53Speaker 1: You got any final thoughts before we go to break
- 46:55Speaker 1: and before we get to work. Thrown down on the table,
- 46:57Speaker 1: I do not, all right, my man? Well your eyes
- 47:00Speaker 1: are feeling better here, I hope your eyes are feeling better.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Everything's good. I'm not lay sensitive at all. I have
- 47:06Speaker 2: a slight, you know, like a slight headache every now
- 47:09Speaker 2: and again above the one eye, but it's not even
- 47:12Speaker 2: anything I've been taking tilent all for It's that, you know,
- 47:15Speaker 2: that minute of an issue that I really haven't felt
- 47:17Speaker 2: the need to take anything for it. So yeah, it's
- 47:20Speaker 2: been it's been good. All right. I go back to
- 47:23Speaker 2: you know, in I think in February just to follow
- 47:26Speaker 2: up and make sure everything looks good and then we
- 47:28Speaker 2: go from there.
- 47:29Speaker 1: So keeping those beady eyes around that's most important, buddy.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Yeah, keeping people out.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Yes, all right, folks are gonna take a break when
- 47:39Speaker 1: we get back. We got a lot more Eagles talk
- 47:40Speaker 1: with our good friend Brandon Lee GOUTENBLG from Bleeding Great
- 47:43Speaker 1: Nation dot com. Stick with us, all right, we are back.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Let's get to what we are thrown down on the
- 47:49Speaker 1: table this week. Lots of Eagles talk. Let's get to
- 47:53Speaker 1: it and now on the table joining us this week
- 47:58Speaker 1: to get into this Philadelphia Eagles team and some great
- 48:01Speaker 1: things that they are doing. We have from Bleedinggreen Nation
- 48:06Speaker 1: dot com. You can catch him on the Twitter slash
- 48:08Speaker 1: x at Brandon gouton We've got the one and only
- 48:11Speaker 1: Brandon lygaut and BLG. How you doing, buddy, Jef?
- 48:14Speaker 4: Glad to be here always helps when the Eagles are
- 48:16Speaker 4: doing well, they're actually exciting to talk about.
- 48:18Speaker 2: So here we go.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Buddy, you have been one of our longtime guests where
- 48:22Speaker 1: for well over eleven years, and first and foremost thank
- 48:26Speaker 1: you for that. But secondly, I gotta say, this Eagles
- 48:30Speaker 1: team is doing something that we haven't seen in quite
- 48:33Speaker 1: some time, even the Super Bowl year. The challenges that
- 48:36Speaker 1: they had during that twenty seventeen year with so many injuries,
- 48:41Speaker 1: we were not necessarily seeing the same type of team
- 48:44Speaker 1: that we saw back then that ended up winning the
- 48:46Speaker 1: Super Bowl. So like I have high hopes in terms
- 48:48Speaker 1: of expectations, we're gonna be getting into that. But I'm
- 48:51Speaker 1: feeling good about where this team is at right now.
- 48:53Speaker 4: Hard not to when they're winning eight games in a row.
- 48:56Speaker 4: Their defense is giving up ten point nine offensive points
- 49:00Speaker 4: per game excluding three garbage time touchdowns over the past
- 49:03Speaker 4: three weeks. Like obvious, clear garbage time touchdowns. It's just incredible.
- 49:07Speaker 4: Is the best defense in the NFL.
- 49:08Speaker 2: It is.
- 49:09Speaker 4: The running game is amazing to say, Coon Barkley, it's
- 49:13Speaker 4: just such a joy to.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Watch exactly look performing at such a high level as
- 49:18Speaker 1: we're heading into this latter part of the regular season,
- 49:21Speaker 1: especially on defense, as you just mentioned BLG, so I
- 49:24Speaker 1: really wanted to start off the discussion with regard to
- 49:27Speaker 1: what Vic Fangio has done from a more macro perspective.
- 49:30Speaker 1: I mean, there were a lot of unknowns, a lot
- 49:33Speaker 1: of changes on defense that we were all concerned about
- 49:36Speaker 1: coming into this season, the linebackers, the pass rush, I mean,
- 49:40Speaker 1: two rookie cornerbacks and how and if they were going
- 49:43Speaker 1: to produce at all. But now that the number one
- 49:46Speaker 1: defense in the league, as you mentioned, and I believe
- 49:49Speaker 1: they're the least penalized defense in the league two at
- 49:52Speaker 1: this point, if I'm not mistaken. So I guess to
- 49:54Speaker 1: get this discussion started, First, should we actually be giving
- 49:58Speaker 1: even more praise to than what he's getting at this point?
- 50:02Speaker 1: And second, you know, what do you think overall has
- 50:05Speaker 1: led to the rise in this defense? Really just being
- 50:08Speaker 1: so dominant.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's clearly a situation where he deserves
- 50:13Speaker 4: the credit as opposed to Oh, it's just like star
- 50:16Speaker 4: players making these big plays and they're not really disciplined. No,
- 50:20Speaker 4: they're extremely disciplined. They tackle well, they play smart, the
- 50:23Speaker 4: way they pass off, you know, coverages to each other.
- 50:26Speaker 4: You can just see on a weekly basis, like they're
- 50:27Speaker 4: they're operating at such a high level, so cohesive, and
- 50:31Speaker 4: that matches with the talent. Obviously, you have to have
- 50:34Speaker 4: the talent there. You don't have the number one defense
- 50:36Speaker 4: without that. You can't just have you know, a bunch
- 50:38Speaker 4: of below average players. But it's everything kind of just
- 50:42Speaker 4: coming together. And I also think, you know, more than
- 50:45Speaker 4: just like implementing a scheme. It seems like on a
- 50:47Speaker 4: week to week basis, the Eagles are just like ready
- 50:50Speaker 4: for the opponent who they're playing, and Vic Fangio is
- 50:53Speaker 4: drawing up you know, really good game plans for this
- 50:55Speaker 4: defense to execute. It's not just like, hey, this defense
- 50:58Speaker 4: does what it does regardless of the opponent. It's like, no,
- 51:01Speaker 4: actually like tailoring it to the team they're facing, which
- 51:05Speaker 4: is what ideally you would you would want conceptually, you know.
- 51:09Speaker 4: And it's it's also it's all coming together at a
- 51:11Speaker 4: high level, and you just see like the players who
- 51:13Speaker 4: have been playing well, like Zach Bond, like for example, credible,
- 51:15Speaker 4: I mean for him to go from what he was
- 51:18Speaker 4: as this back up kind of player too. Again, I
- 51:20Speaker 4: don't think it's hyperbolic to say all pro like we're
- 51:23Speaker 4: talking above Pro Bowl here, we're talking about all pro
- 51:25Speaker 4: kind of player, maybe like the best linebacker in the
- 51:28Speaker 4: NFL this season, like that kind of level. You know,
- 51:31Speaker 4: Like obviously you give Zach Brawn some credit in there
- 51:34Speaker 4: as well, but like I don't think that happens without
- 51:36Speaker 4: Vic Fangio. So it's really just kind of amazing how
- 51:38Speaker 4: all this has come together.
- 51:40Speaker 1: It really is, because you know, there were a lot
- 51:41Speaker 1: of questions about Fangio coming into coming from Miami. You know,
- 51:44Speaker 1: I guess a lot of those Miami players are a
- 51:46Speaker 1: little soft down there. I guess we could take that
- 51:48Speaker 1: away from you know what, what Vic Fangio had to
- 51:51Speaker 1: deal with perhaps in Miami. But you know, even even
- 51:54Speaker 1: after the start of the season, BLG, I was concerned
- 51:57Speaker 1: about how effective the pass rush was actually going to be.
- 52:00Speaker 1: It's something I mentioned a number of times on this
- 52:02Speaker 1: podcast platform. And they're currently ranked eighth in terms of sacks,
- 52:06Speaker 1: and while they're not like completely dominating in terms of
- 52:09Speaker 1: sacks maybe like the branc like the Broncos are, And yes,
- 52:12Speaker 1: I know since Week six they are first in sacks
- 52:14Speaker 1: in the NFL with thirty. I mean, Jalen Carter is
- 52:17Speaker 1: a big reason why this pass rush is seeing success,
- 52:20Speaker 1: why the defense is seeing success as well. But aside
- 52:23Speaker 1: from him, what else have you been seeing from the
- 52:26Speaker 1: pass rush perspective as of late, which is really creating
- 52:29Speaker 1: some havoc for some opposing offenses.
- 52:32Speaker 4: Yeah, on the Fangio note real quick about the Miami thing,
- 52:34Speaker 4: I do wonder like how much the Eagles were cognizant
- 52:37Speaker 4: of that and have kind of tried to set up
- 52:39Speaker 4: a structure where the kind of safeguard against some of that. Probably,
- 52:42Speaker 4: you know, some of it, like you said, is the
- 52:43Speaker 4: Dolphins players maybe not being the most conducive to success
- 52:47Speaker 4: and winning. But part of it, I think also is
- 52:49Speaker 4: the Eagles were you know, cognizant of that. And I
- 52:52Speaker 4: think you have kind of like the good cop maybe
- 52:54Speaker 4: the position coach Christian Parker bad cop defensive coordinator of
- 52:57Speaker 4: Vic Fangeo more old school minded, So I think that's
- 53:01Speaker 4: kind of interesting. But to the point of the pass rush,
- 53:04Speaker 4: like I think part of I mean, John Carter, as
- 53:06Speaker 4: you mentioned, is making life easier on everyone with how
- 53:09Speaker 4: much he gets double teamed and held and held. But
- 53:13Speaker 4: also I think just the way the coverage has married
- 53:16Speaker 4: together with the pass rush, like just the way that
- 53:19Speaker 4: they're the Eagles coverage unit is giving time for the
- 53:22Speaker 4: pass rushers to get to the quarterback there, so, you know,
- 53:26Speaker 4: I think and part of that's just them being amazing players,
- 53:28Speaker 4: whether it's Quinn Mitchell or Cooper to Gene or whoever.
- 53:32Speaker 4: The part of it, I think again is the scheme
- 53:33Speaker 4: kind of helping the pass rush kind of just again
- 53:35Speaker 4: everyone being so sound, giving those edge rushers and the
- 53:39Speaker 4: interior defensive lineman as well chances to get to the quarterback.
- 53:42Speaker 4: So it's not really just working together in sync and
- 53:45Speaker 4: obviously to your players like elevating their game. Milton Williams
- 53:48Speaker 4: is taking advantage of those one on one opportunities getting
- 53:51Speaker 4: because John Carter is double team. Nolan Smith is really
- 53:54Speaker 4: progressing from where he was as a rookie. So Josh
- 53:57Speaker 4: Sweat obviously tailed off in a big time way last season,
- 54:01Speaker 4: but legals have been purposefully kind of like keeping his
- 54:04Speaker 4: snapcount down so he can be a more effective player
- 54:06Speaker 4: than he was. So you know, part of it is
- 54:09Speaker 4: is just really there's a lot of reasons going into
- 54:11Speaker 4: why this pass rush is working.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Absolutely, and you know, there's one position group that I
- 54:16Speaker 1: really wanted to dive into next in terms of this defense,
- 54:19Speaker 1: and it's the safeties who I think, I don't know,
- 54:21Speaker 1: maybe if they're not getting a lot of credit this
- 54:24Speaker 1: year because we don't hear too too much about specifically
- 54:27Speaker 1: Read Blank and Ship, CJ. Gardner Johnson, maybe even the
- 54:29Speaker 1: backups who are making some pretty good plays, you know,
- 54:32Speaker 1: week in and week out. But you know, we certainly
- 54:36Speaker 1: know that, you know, the two rookies cornerbacks are doing
- 54:40Speaker 1: a phenomenal job. But in terms of the safeties themselves,
- 54:43Speaker 1: with Reid Blank and Ship, CJ. Gardner Johnson, I mean
- 54:46Speaker 1: CJ has been on this team before, and we know
- 54:48Speaker 1: what type of talent he is in the NFL, But
- 54:51Speaker 1: what have you been seeing from the safety position BLG
- 54:53Speaker 1: where we can really start to give them some more
- 54:56Speaker 1: credit I think for maybe how this defense is performing.
- 54:59Speaker 1: What are your thoughts.
- 55:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been a big Read Blankenship fan. I thought,
- 55:03Speaker 4: you know, he obviously struggled a bit last year. I
- 55:05Speaker 4: thought people were getting a little too low on him
- 55:07Speaker 4: after some of those struggles, you know, when in reality,
- 55:10Speaker 4: the whole defense fell off basically last year, so I
- 55:14Speaker 4: think he has really stepped it up this season. For
- 55:17Speaker 4: the most part of me is the three interceptions and
- 55:19Speaker 4: they're not just like you know, cheapis too. These are
- 55:21Speaker 4: like really good plays that he's diving. Ticks almost look
- 55:24Speaker 4: similar all of them, and they were at crucial parts
- 55:26Speaker 4: in the game too. You think back to Week one
- 55:28Speaker 4: against the Packers, he seals that game. Week three against
- 55:30Speaker 4: the Saints, he seals that game basically kind of like
- 55:32Speaker 4: a real turning point and kind of sort of officially
- 55:35Speaker 4: closed the deal in the Commander's game. So, you know,
- 55:37Speaker 4: I think Read Blankenship has been excellent. And that's not
- 55:39Speaker 4: even just that's just the coverage. I mean as a
- 55:41Speaker 4: run defender as well. He also had a role in
- 55:44Speaker 4: that Commander's game and that fourth down stop on Jail
- 55:46Speaker 4: and Dayden Daniels. He just has I think a high
- 55:49Speaker 4: IQ player consistently what we've seen in practice over the years.
- 55:52Speaker 4: He just knows where to be, is often in position
- 55:55Speaker 4: to make the play and really seems like a good
- 55:57Speaker 4: fit in the Vic Fangio defense that way, when you
- 55:59Speaker 4: know communication and positioning all that's so key. So I
- 56:02Speaker 4: think Blankenship's having a pretty good year. Obviously, we'll see
- 56:05Speaker 4: where he's at coming off the concussion in this game.
- 56:07Speaker 4: Then CJGJ. I think it has kind of had an
- 56:09Speaker 4: uneven year. He had that really big fourth down stop
- 56:11Speaker 4: in Week two, which should have sealed the deal if
- 56:14Speaker 4: the offense delivered on their end of the bargain there
- 56:16Speaker 4: late in the game. Other than that, you know, he's
- 56:18Speaker 4: given up some big plays. We haven't really seen the
- 56:21Speaker 4: kind of ball production obviously that he had back in
- 56:23Speaker 4: twenty twenty two. But I mean in this Ravens game,
- 56:26Speaker 4: he was the one, obviously who took the defense aside
- 56:28Speaker 4: after those first two Ravens drives and was speaking to
- 56:31Speaker 4: the team and got them fired up. And even if
- 56:34Speaker 4: he's not necessarily playing his best game in terms of
- 56:36Speaker 4: assignment sound, he plays physical and certainly we see that,
- 56:40Speaker 4: and I think he's kind of coming on a little
- 56:42Speaker 4: bit here. So certainly I think both of those guys
- 56:45Speaker 4: are really vital to this team's success.
- 56:47Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, you know, we all receive as you know,
- 56:51Speaker 1: as you well know, we all received bizarre tweets every
- 56:53Speaker 1: now and again from folks out there on the internet.
- 56:56Speaker 1: And I want to shift over to the offensive side
- 56:58Speaker 1: of things, and specifically with the quarterback position here because
- 57:04Speaker 1: I've received some tweets and responses from folks who don't
- 57:08Speaker 1: like the fact that Jalen Hurts is the Philadelphia Eagles
- 57:11Speaker 1: quarterback even though the Eagles are thirty five and nine
- 57:15Speaker 1: in Jalen Hurts' starts dating back to the start of
- 57:17Speaker 1: the twenty twenty two season. That is a I mentioned
- 57:21Speaker 1: it on our Opposition Territory podcast this past week. It
- 57:23Speaker 1: said seven to ninety five win percentage, it's the best
- 57:26Speaker 1: in the NFL during that time. So, I don't know,
- 57:30Speaker 1: why do you think there are still those Eagles fans
- 57:33Speaker 1: out there BLG that don't believe that Jalen Hurts is
- 57:36Speaker 1: the guy who should be under center? Because I think
- 57:38Speaker 1: to myself as well, well who else do you want
- 57:40Speaker 1: under center? You know, who else could the Eagles have
- 57:43Speaker 1: gotten to be under center that's going to be producing
- 57:46Speaker 1: for this team better? As this team is ten and
- 57:48Speaker 1: two on the season here. So I don't know, why
- 57:50Speaker 1: do you think we're still seeing that every now and
- 57:52Speaker 1: again with certain sectors of this Eagles fan base as
- 57:54Speaker 1: it relates to Jalen Hurts.
- 57:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think part of it is kind
- 57:57Speaker 4: of what you touched on there, a little bit of
- 57:59Speaker 4: like who else would it? You have to have the
- 58:01Speaker 4: perspective the league wide perspective of what this looks like
- 58:04Speaker 4: and also the idea and if you're saying, if you
- 58:08Speaker 4: don't want it to be telling Hurts, you'd have to
- 58:09Speaker 4: propose realistic alternative, which is not so easy. I mean,
- 58:13Speaker 4: I get it from a standpoint. No, like, there are
- 58:14Speaker 4: still questions about this passing offense, no doubts about it. Yes,
- 58:18Speaker 4: And I think the way they are playing defense at
- 58:22Speaker 4: such a high level and the way they're able to
- 58:23Speaker 4: run the ball, let's say Quon Barkley, at such a
- 58:25Speaker 4: high level, they can win a Super Bowl with this formula.
- 58:28Speaker 4: But I mean there's more there's less margin for error
- 58:31Speaker 4: than there would be if you had the passing game clicking,
- 58:33Speaker 4: and how ideally it should be when you have all
- 58:36Speaker 4: the talent you have offensively and then just again from
- 58:39Speaker 4: what we've seen from Jalent Hurts ability as a passer before.
- 58:42Speaker 4: So you know, I think there are still some fair
- 58:44Speaker 4: questions and you have's an area for improvement and part
- 58:47Speaker 4: of its nickpicking, right, that's what you're going to do
- 58:49Speaker 4: when the team is this good. You're going to look
- 58:50Speaker 4: at the areas like, Okay, how could we get even better?
- 58:54Speaker 4: And what the potential pit falls could be down the stretch,
- 58:56Speaker 4: and I certainly think you could look at the passing
- 58:58Speaker 4: offense being an issue you at some point, but I
- 59:02Speaker 4: don't think it's disqualifying by any means. I think there
- 59:04Speaker 4: is something to Jaleen Hurt's being this like force of
- 59:06Speaker 4: personality and you know, setting the tone and you know,
- 59:10Speaker 4: just making winning plays as simple and as I say,
- 59:13Speaker 4: as that sounds like his ability to pick up the
- 59:15Speaker 4: football in this pile of bodies last week he did
- 59:19Speaker 4: against the Ravens where that snap kind of gets fumbled there,
- 59:21Speaker 4: like that shouldn't be taken for granted. Yeah, on the
- 59:23Speaker 4: way he's able to run through, you know, and and
- 59:26Speaker 4: and take you know, make take advantage of defenses with
- 59:30Speaker 4: his legs, Like it's it's easy to take some of
- 59:32Speaker 4: the things he does for granted. And I think like
- 59:35Speaker 4: this is part of what goes into It doesn't always
- 59:37Speaker 4: feel like the most impressive thing you're watching, as may
- 59:39Speaker 4: it is with Joe Burrow or whoever, like making these
- 59:42Speaker 4: kind of incredible passes, but it's just quietly contributing to winning.
- 59:45Speaker 4: And I think that ultimately is reflected in the record.
- 59:47Speaker 1: You mentioned a phrase setting the tone, and I think
- 59:49Speaker 1: that's a really important part of what his game has been.
- 59:52Speaker 1: I mentioned again I mentioned on our Opposition Territory podcast
- 59:54Speaker 1: this past week. He doesn't need to be that quarterback
- 59:57Speaker 1: that's going to throw for three hundred and fifty yards
- 59:59Speaker 1: three to touchdowns per game. That's that that's not with
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: this team right now at this particular point in time,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: needs from him because of Saequon Barkley, because of how
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: the defense is performing at such a high level. But
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: he is able to set the tone. And I think
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: while it's not the sexiest thing to say, it's not
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: the sexiest phrasing in the world, it is extremely important
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to have a quarterback in this league that can set
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: the tone for an entire game. Even though the yes
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: first quarters rough in terms of getting points on the
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: board and sustaining drives. But if you can set the
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: tone for another three quarters, there's something to be said
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: for that.
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: Absolutely. And you know, look, this could matter more if
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: the defense doesn't play as well, better stretch or Saquon
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: Barkley knock on wood gets hurt, you know somehow, playing
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: it like it's got that's that's when it would show
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: up or potentially could be a huge issue. Until then,
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: you don't worry about that, but obviously, you know, you
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: look at the history, and that's why I think people
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: look at too, like you know, typically the passing offense
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: that those team teams are going to be the more
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: successful teams in the long run. But when you talk
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: about an exceptional kind of years and players, I mean,
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: that's I think we're looking at that.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: This year.
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: The defense is exceptional. Sakon Barkley is exceptional, and that
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: takes the pressure off Jillen Hurts absolutely.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Again, folks, we're talking to Brandon Lee Gouten at Brandon
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Gouton on the Twitter slash x Bleeding Green Nation dot com.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: They got fantastic content all the time being put up
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: daily over there again at Bleedinggreen Nation dot com. We
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: mentioned Saquon Barkley here. We know what he can do.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: We know what aj Brown and DeVante Smith can do
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: as well. BLG. But I wanted to get into the
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: tight end position with you. It's one of those storylines
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I think on the side here that nobody's really addressing
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: too too much, and I'm wondering, really how we should
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: be viewing Dallas Goddard and I'm not sure as of
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: us recording this year on Wednesday, December fourth, could potentially
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: be going on ir maybe he already is, and maybe
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: you can give it update on that. But you know,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: when he was out earlier this year, we basically saw
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: just about the same kind of productivity from Grant Calcata
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: that we saw from Goddard in various stats in terms
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: of the stat lines, and I wonder how much of
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: an important cug as much as I love him, Dallas
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Godder is within this offense moving forward here, what are
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: your thoughts on godd or what he's been able to
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: give to this offense and how this team may proceed
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: with him in the future.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: He did make some big catches in the Ravens game, specifically, yes,
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: the touchdown a key first down at one point, so
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: he can contribute, but you know, hasn't quite been like
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: the volume target And then you know, I think some
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: of that hurts too. It's not just about god Her,
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: but and part of it is also Dallastart is struggling
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: to stay on the field. It has been a big
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: issue for some time now, and you would have to think,
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: given his age, given the contract and everything, those are
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: going to probably be looking doesn't mean they're going to
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: cut him this off season, but they're going to be
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: looking for a potential replacement and successor that that could
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: take over in the future. Certainly, Dallas Gotter is older
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: now than when the Eagles drafted him, when they still
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: had Zach Hurtz. So yeah, I think you know his
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: future situation. But I mean, and you know, we'll see
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: where he's at injury wise now, still on the roster.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: That could be a sign that Eagles maybe think he's
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: only going to miss three games at most, certainly like
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: he did earlier this year. But they still have until
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: Saturday at four pm. If they do want to put
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: him on IR and have this week and Week fourteen
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: count towards one of the four games he would have
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: to miss, and then that in that situation, he would
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: be eligible to return as soon as the Week eighteen finale.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: Maybe he just could keep him on ice to the
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: playoffs if you just want to play it safe there.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: We'll see how that goes. But yeah, I mean, Grant
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: cal Katara, as you mentioned, I think, did a really
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: nice job filling in for him. He's an explosive kind
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: of target when he look at his yards per reception.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: I think if you look at like the qualified tight ends,
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: he doesn't rank among them, you know, because of a
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: small sample size. But he's like in top six, top
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: five in terms of yards per reception, so he can
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: offer you some of that. Obviously, not as good as
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: a blocker, that's where he struggles. Ye, but Eagles did
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: sign C. J. Uzoma to the roster from the practice squad,
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: will be their second tight end. They might just roll
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: with two. They kind of did that when Goddard was
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: missing time earlier with just Calcatar and Jack Stole, so
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: they might just kind of roll with two for now.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: They have E. J.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: Jenkins on the practice squad. They can't use the elevations
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: on him because they've already run out of those, So
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: we'll see. But for now it's Cal, Katerra and Uzoma
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: for the next couple games.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: All right, well, BLG, before I let you go, just
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: one last topic really to get into, and that topic
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: is the expectations game. The expectations amongst this fan base
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: here because it's of course it should be rising week
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: after week. The expectation is now that the Eagles should
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: end up playing in the NFC Championship Game against the
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Detroit Lions. It's what folks are talking about what we'd
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: love to see right here as we're heading into week fourteen.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Is this a fair expectation for US fans to have?
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: And how do you think the Eagles really would stack
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: up against the Detroit Lions, who who are absolutely dominating
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: their opponents this year as well? What are your thoughts?
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think it should be because they're
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: formula for winning. Is legit, there's nothing fluky about this. Yeah,
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: Like they're dominating opponents to go down to Baltimore and
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: beat that team basically by two possessions before you know,
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: the garbage time touchdown, Like teams don't do that. No
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: one goes to endto Baltimore and beats Lamar Jackson like that.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Like what they're doing this year, what Saquan is doing,
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: what some of the players are doing, what the team
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: is doing, it's special stuff. Yeah, and it can't just
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: be taken for granted and not to be a doomer
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: about next year, but like you're not gonna probably get
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: some of that same kind of production just because of
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: how special it is this year, Just like I was
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: saying about the twenty twenty three goals back in twenty
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: twenty two, how special the season that was. They're going
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: to have some drop off. Doesn't mean to fall cliff entirely,
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: but I mean they have to take advantage of this,
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: and they have a real chance of getting the one seed.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: Obviously the Lions are in the more favorable position given
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: they only have one loss at the moment. But this
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: game on Thursday night against the Packers is going to
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: be huge. Like if the Paickers are able to win
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: that game, and assuming the Vikings that lose at least
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: one of their remaining games with decent chance, then he
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: goes control their destiny at that point for the number
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: one seed. And like, you know, they can't say winning
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: these final all these final games is a lock, but
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: like you just want to be favored, and all these
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: final g are yeah, and four of them are at home,
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: So there's a real path to like winning out here
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: and getting that one seed, and that has to be
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: the goal, especially like the bye I think is so
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: especially valuable this year for a team that had their
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: regular season by Baction Week five has to break.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: And then also just playing Jared Goff at the Link
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: is entirely different than playing him in Ford Field in Detroit.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Yep.
