- 1:00Hello, my name is Neil, I'm an alcoholic.
- 1:04And here's my story. I was grow up broadmeadows and
- 1:10Melvin pretty poor. My first addiction was lollies
- 1:16when I could get them. Anything that made me feel good
- 1:20instantaneously was my addiction right throughout my life,
- 1:24actually. So I'm what you may call, a all
- 1:29of the above alcoholic, my tried everything more than once.
- 1:35And my first drink started with a Brandy on a toothache with the
- 1:43cotton bud or cotton swab. And And I place it on the tooth.
- 1:49There, numb, the pain and a bit trickle down the back of my
- 1:53throat and did something to my head as well. 10 minutes later,
- 1:59I was reaching for another Gaba. Brandy on the Cotton bud.
- 2:03I'll cotton board and not much stayed on the tooth.
- 2:08I think I sucked. It dry two or three times until
- 2:12I was quite a little bit of hammered for a nine-year-old.
- 2:17And I remember dancing into the lounge room and showing off
- 2:22doing a bit of a boogie. And dad said, I think you're
- 2:26pissed. I think you need to go and have
- 2:27a lie down which I did and I woke up a couple hours later and
- 2:37like a bear that are coming out of hibernation too early and it
- 2:43made me feel like I just didn't want to live.
- 2:47I always, I I changed, you know, prior to that day, I had my own
- 2:52little bubble and it was a bubble of all happiness.
- 2:59And that first drink changed my life.
- 3:02I suppose I overindulged on a spirit.
- 3:07I stayed off alcohol, it scared me.
- 3:09I stayed off alcohol until Millie my 18th birthday and
- 3:16mate. Next door.
- 3:17And I went around to the Foodland shop grabbed a couple
- 3:21of bottles for bottles were Babbitt's logger and proceeded
- 3:25to drink those for dry. Sitting on his home in Chevy In
- 3:30the Heat of the day. I didn't feel too good after
- 3:33that and I went, I did the same thing.
- 3:37I went to bed and woke up a few hours.
- 3:39Later. Swearing I'd never touch the
- 3:41stuff again. But I wanted to drink like a
- 3:45man. So I tried and I tried and
- 3:48failed and tried and failed, and I couldn't take to it, but I was
- 3:54becoming used to drinking when I did in Social occasions.
- 3:59And I overindulged. I made a fool of myself.
- 4:04I became a laughingstock sometimes and I was the life of
- 4:09the party others and I couldn't control what that drink was
- 4:13doing to me. Never have been able to On a
- 4:17constant basis, I haven't been able to reliably reliably rely
- 4:21on alcohol to be anything but a foe to me.
- 4:27I had many jobs, I moved on jobs because I thought that the jobs
- 4:32didn't suit me, but it was a Restless discontent and
- 4:36irritability within me that saw me not only getting bored, but I
- 4:40needed a new face in life, you know, every now and then if I
- 4:45found myself embarrassed by my alcoholic Behavior, How did this
- 4:53and gravitated through, from Victoria through New South
- 4:57Wales? Brisbane.
- 5:00Back down. Using my thumb for transport.
- 5:02A lot of the time and sleeping in cow paddocks.
- 5:08I did that for a couple of years and then knocked on the back
- 5:10door at home after my father suggested, I should go and find
- 5:14myself. I thought I'd been out for a
- 5:16long enough to show him that I had.
- 5:21This lasted probably six months and I was back off the wagon,
- 5:26back in back in Melbourne and I was on the road again looking
- 5:31for a place to live. I had good jobs throughout my
- 5:36life. I worked in cinemas, I worked in
- 5:44gardens. I was a Rose Garden for a while
- 5:48and many others too long to to mention Restless discontent and
- 5:56and irritable. I got married.
- 5:59When I was 26 I was working in the gardens in Brisbane.
- 6:04I followed a girl from the Geelong up to Brisbane and said
- 6:07this is the girl for me but it wasn't it was and and I wasn't
- 6:13for her in the long run. I joined the military and got
- 6:21posted to Melvin then Adelaide and I thought the military will
- 6:26sort me out. I'll become a better person and
- 6:29that was my intention to try. But I think it was a party for
- 6:36me in the military because the drink was cheap.
- 6:43Everyone seemed to be participating and but not as
- 6:49much as me, you know, I'd make it a habit and it was brought to
- 6:54my superiors attention that I was making it too much of a
- 6:57habit and I needed to be counseled And I took that
- 7:02counsel because the other alternative was the tank in in
- 7:09Richmond, in New South Wales and I'd heard about it and I tried
- 7:14my hardest to stick that out. I didn't though I end up getting
- 7:22canceled and and spoken to and and a written warning, this
- 7:28meant that the next time I'd be a formal warning and I'd be in
- 7:33real trouble. Sorry, my life started in AI in
- 7:40the year 2000. My family's gone back to
- 7:44Brisbane. I'd separated from a wife and I
- 7:50started life a new winner in a room.
- 7:53That was a much bigger that bigger than, you know, a prison
- 7:56cell, it was called an airline's block, and that's where he lived
- 8:01and walked down the hall to Shave and shower.
- 8:05And then back to that block was Solitude oil.
- 8:10It was not the best way after I came out of her, married
- 8:14quarter, and, and kids and family to be stuck in that spot,
- 8:19which was my own fault. You know, I wasn't smart enough
- 8:22to realize what path I was going down and it made me maybe think
- 8:30a little bit, you know, once I had some money gathered or I
- 8:35moved off base and bought a house with a bit of money that I
- 8:42had I don't know how I found it. I think it was a cash in of some
- 8:46super and I put a money down on a house in Salisbury and
- 8:54continue to drink and you can't do that when you've got a
- 8:57mortgage. And I lost that house after
- 9:02renting it out and living with some people that I befriended
- 9:08and they did some damage. So I lost the house and had to
- 9:12start all over again. I found my way to LA to go all a
- 9:18meeting after talking to an office manager by the name of
- 9:24Horst. And he said after he's telling
- 9:27me his story and I spoke a little bit about where I was,
- 9:32you said, well you better get yourself without a drink to a
- 9:34meeting tonight at gawler And I did that and it was the best
- 9:41thing I've ever done in my life because it wasn't that night
- 9:44that changed me. That wasn't the next or, you
- 9:48know, four or five meetings later but something twigged in
- 9:52about my fifth of six meeting. I, which I spoke at all the
- 9:57meetings in the northern suburbs are from Monday to Friday or
- 10:03Monday to Thursday and which is the best thing I could have done
- 10:08to because I was getting a lot off my chest.
- 10:11It must have bored people but I needed to do it and I needed to
- 10:15talk. And and one member said, that's
- 10:18what you need to do. You need to need to talk.
- 10:20You need to get honest with yourself and other people.
- 10:25A few weeks later, I had an argument with a Zen girlfriend
- 10:28and I put 100 dollar bill in my top pocket.
- 10:32And I went off to the front bar the Salsbury Hotel.
- 10:39With the intentions of getting drunk with the poor meat.
- 10:43And at that stage, I'd already bought a big book.
- 10:48I went to go into the bar but for some reason, I reached out
- 10:52to the left hand side of the bench seat and we holdin and
- 10:57grabbed hold of the big book that I purchased proceeded to
- 11:00walk to the door of the front front bar at Salsbury, Jack's
- 11:05Bar. and, I realize when looking down in my left hand, and I was
- 11:13pushing with my right hand to go into a pub, and I had a big book
- 11:16in the other hand and I thought, I'll something's telling me
- 11:19something here. There's a story behind this, so
- 11:23I got back to the car was a Wednesday night and got to the
- 11:25second half of the Wednesday night Hospital meeting in
- 11:31Elizabeth. Which I was greeted with all the
- 11:34friendly faces, after not drinking to get into a meeting.
- 11:40And, and that was when my lifestyle changed, Headphones on
- 11:46my sex started and I haven't looked back since that day.
- 11:51Oh yeah, I took a request of from an older member that I
- 11:58should start a meeting or not. Start a meeting but take over
- 12:01from a meeting and and be secretary, which I did.
- 12:06And it was a good big job for. This was a few months later and
- 12:13I was about six months. Sober at this stage and they
- 12:17said you're ready, do some do some internal work. 12 months
- 12:22later. I found myself organizing a
- 12:26camper Melrose camp and, and doing that that same job and
- 12:31then wearing two hats and which wasn't condoned at any stage
- 12:37that you should. But I felt I could handle it and
- 12:40put my hand up for it. I've always been a bit of a
- 12:44workaholic Like, I think that was to support habits that I
- 12:48that I created alcohol being the mainstay. and I, I guess. it was
- 13:01up to me to do something, you know, and I felt not in the
- 13:07Inner Circle but I felt that I was a part of ia2 to become a
- 13:15member and a valued member to to do Something that was right for
- 13:22a change and not something that was wrong.
- 13:24I can see a change in myself. I could see people other people
- 13:29asking advice the newcomer. And I was only knew myself, I
- 13:34did my best to either Point them in the right direction or answer
- 13:38their questions and at became a good thing for me to help other
- 13:44people. And I think, you know, in the
- 13:46wrong one, you know, after 22 years helping people is what AAA
- 13:51is all about and to start off and realize that early was a
- 13:58good thing for me. It was a good thing for people
- 14:00that I helped. I am now five years sober for
- 14:07more than the first time in my 22 years.
- 14:10In a, a first bus was eight and a half.
- 14:14I had a wine turn that wine around in my hand after it was
- 14:20poor data. Naughty Boy, someone who was a
- 14:22friend of and he had received this bottle from his father,
- 14:27handed down to him to open during this.
- 14:30He's birthday, his 50th birthday.
- 14:34I had a glass in front of me and I turned it around and around
- 14:39and around, it was warm and it was fingerprinted and and it
- 14:44wasn't worth while drinking because I changed that Grange 86
- 14:49into goon. I Not drinking it straight away
- 14:56or when it was ripe and and anyway I had a sip.
- 14:59And then the next two golf's was as if it was grown. and I, It
- 15:07changed me. I didn't drink straight away,
- 15:10but retrospectively. I look back and said that wasn't
- 15:14so bad. and then was a few lights later, it was a few
- 15:20Heavies later within a week and And it was a change, your life,
- 15:30I'd busted. And I'd throw in a way, what I
- 15:33thought eight and a half years sobriety which is a lot of dogs,
- 15:37a day at a time. But it wasn't the end old.
- 15:41You know, I've learned some things in a and that was to come
- 15:44back. Do some work confess?
- 15:48The fact that you've had a drink, you're busted and start
- 15:51again, that very next day after my last drink.
- 15:56And which lasted a few weeks. And I eventually happened to
- 16:06bust another two times. My Road in a I thought was all
- 16:12straight and narrow wasn't such and I didn't take advice from
- 16:17people to do the steps. I took advice from close me up,
- 16:21friends to do certain things. I did do a steps program with
- 16:28Border Town, Eric, a guy that was in the early days around
- 16:32about the 2000. Mark, I don't know what's
- 16:33happened to him now, but I value his friendship, then, and And it
- 16:39was an x-ray. I remember that had the 12-step
- 16:41program going and I wasn't the only one in attendance and you
- 16:44helped a lot of people. He knew about alcoholism.
- 16:49You knew about the steps program, and he took me through
- 16:52them and then 16 weeks later, I felt that I was ready to stand
- 16:57up on my own and, and, and do the right thing.
- 17:03I did and I lasted another five or six years and I've got the
- 17:10poem. He's I I was on a work pressure
- 17:15and I think pressure kills the alcoholic is good.
- 17:17Precious, it's bad, pressures. There's pressures of weddings,
- 17:20as you can lose your job, you have the addiction and and it's
- 17:25the first thing people reach for is the remedy for the addiction.
- 17:31That's The immediate and it wasn't until the last five years
- 17:36of my sobriety, which I've just covered up to five years and two
- 17:41months that I've learned in the last five years.
- 17:45What a, a has been all about and that's to be honest, open down
- 17:51the line truthful. Now, I've had bust on that
- 17:55truthfulness. I've had a bus in other avenues
- 17:59of my life. But I've repented to the truth
- 18:05with somebody, a close wealth friend which has helped me get
- 18:09over those. It hasn't helped.
- 18:12The fact that I've had to confess to my wife and my
- 18:15ex-wife through the night that I've relieved.
- 18:22Certain aspects of a a that I didn't didn't know existed.
- 18:25I'd never got to the night before.
- 18:28You know, in a, in a, in a way that I've actually not stepped
- 18:33people and my ex-wife was the hardest because she knew me
- 18:39she'd been to Al-Anon me meetings and and during the hour
- 18:43and a half phone call with her. She actually said, oh, I went a
- 18:48Ellen on a long time before you went to AA, and I didn't even
- 18:52know. So it's a, it's a closed mouth
- 18:55for a fellowship either way, whether it be Ellen, I know.
- 18:58A or, you know, you don't have to sing it from the rooftops.
- 19:04But your friends are within the fellowship and and my friends
- 19:12are still here. You know, I can, I can talk to
- 19:14people and whether it's playing music with them or, or, or going
- 19:21out to dinner, or swapping advice.
- 19:25It's something that My life has changed because of a and I can't
- 19:32think I and the people in it enough because there's always a
- 19:37fellowship at every different group conscious that you go to
- 19:41with, in a meeting and some suit, some people some suit
- 19:45others. But I got to be honest now and
- 19:50say I love them all. Now, you know, I didn't in the
- 19:55past, I always had a, you know, Way a wall up against some and
- 20:03resentments and resentments is it can be what someone of the
- 20:07biggest Killers because people drink on resentments. but, Yeah.
- 20:17I'm at an AA camp at the moment. I'm hidden away and so I'm not
- 20:22interrupted. So I'll wish everyone that's
- 20:25listening to this a good night, good day and I hope you get
- 20:30something out of my share. Thank you.
- 20:33And now a historical broadcast made on behalf of a first
- 20:38broadcast in Adelaide On 5K in 1952 good evening everybody many
- 20:45times in these go. Cast.
- 20:47It has been stretched by members of a, a, and an alcoholic.
- 20:51No matter his station in life, his religious beliefs or his
- 20:55political convictions. Need not experience any feeling
- 20:59of timidity or discovered, whatever in approaching an
- 21:03alcoholics anonymous group. But even today, you members who
- 21:08have summoned up sufficient, courage to take the first step
- 21:12towards recovery frankly, admit that they had previously.
- 21:16I hesitated to come to us because of weird.
- 21:20I'll misconceptions of a its environment and its members.
- 21:25In this broadcast, I will endeavor to give a true
- 21:29portrayal of the atmosphere of AA meeting, and a tent picture
- 21:35of the evidence member admitted that every alcoholic is
- 21:40hypersensitive in between belts. Here is not 5 minutes at his
- 21:44first meeting before here. Realizes that all his fears have
- 21:49been grounded, impact laughable. Neither need a new member, feel
- 21:54any humiliation in coming to his first meeting.
- 21:58I certainly felt love unity. Yes.
- 22:01But not even the agent, that was what I would agonizingly
- 22:05experience when suffering a reversal recovery out of bounds.
- 22:10And if it to pronounce an alcohol in any company, among a
- 22:15alcoholic who have suffered as we have seven, or before extreme
- 22:20temperature, Advocate who made the Sizer for what they
- 22:24consider. Our weakness GPA only joy and
- 22:27pride in the house. And if you are contemplating
- 22:31coming to your 40D removed from your mind in the idea that we
- 22:36are a religious text, or that we are losing phonetic.
- 22:40Numbers are out of many creeps, if one member knows and others
- 22:45religious denomination. It Is by X's there by voluntary
- 22:49and unpolluted achievement as a great Redeemer up.
- 22:54Aliens to any specified, organized, religious body, and
- 23:00any members faith in his own concern, only in its broadest
- 23:05sense, its General application is religion ever discussed at
- 23:09the meeting We are not religious in the sectarian, but we are far
- 23:15from even a, a program radiate, spirituality front cover to
- 23:21cover, but do not confuse us with those obsessing.
- 23:26The video on hating saying, abandonment at revive the
- 23:30fusions in other countries, you may have If we discovered a man
- 23:36bordering on me 33 and doesn't realize that one is a dangerous.
- 23:44As a matter of being, whatever the record may have Z whatever
- 23:52humiliation. We experience in retrospect, it
- 23:55is bearish. When we realize that a US is
- 23:59given a pair of pair denied, even two, Ministers of religion
- 24:03and medical men. And nevertheless, both do Yeoman
- 24:07service. Collecting personalities and we
- 24:53are deeply grateful to five. Stay or do you go up top?
- 24:58This session has proved the most effective means of contacting,
- 25:02those who are willing to help you see, a is composed of two
- 25:07parts, the selfish and the, under the former prevails where
- 25:13we are. So out of coverage, land surface
- 25:16element activates really had re-established.
- 25:20Pastels and to capable of helping others.
- 25:24But Coon extent, we are sensitive about individually
- 25:28after that help. We are not curious or
- 25:31inquisitors about another man's problems, but we are always
- 25:35willing and anxious to have helped himself.
- 25:39The new member felt the sprayer to unburden himself.
- 25:42All these problems even before the full group of members, we
- 25:46need even then he will know you and the agency.
- 25:50Of the lives of most alcoholics but of the same button.
- 25:54When you remember night, imagine, he has been a deep
- 25:57Dives in. What else perhaps take it today
- 26:01have been presented in comparison to those of some
- 26:04members who composed the audience.
- 26:07I hope I am not creating the impression that members are men
- 26:12and women with do thought their Chieftain gain Society,
- 26:17accepted, maybe Paul has been the ha Ah, may have wrote to
- 26:21themselves for the fitting isn't group.
- 26:25The alcoholic is the greatest ever.
- 26:31But a new member is not ask The Boy Who Sold the World, believe
- 26:36into that small portion of its represented by a a usual
- 26:41practice to have it stuck in the ready room, with an old member
- 26:44before, he tells it all member of his fallen and indicate that
- 26:49he is anxious and willing to do. We have local maintenance for
