Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Bright Lights, Big City With JAKE DAVIES From OF LIMBO
Transcript
- 0:26And how's it going everybody? This is Jake Davies from of Limbo and uh,
- 0:30we're talking to Heavy mag today and our new single it was California Demon.
- 0:35It's got a lot of fire, a lot of demonic visuals, right,
- 0:40all dig it? So yeah, enjoy it? Thanks, okay man,
- 0:42thanks for joining us today. Yeah, buddy, I like the what
- 0:46you did there with the play on words toom be totally up the mark.
- 0:48But California Deamon and California Dreaming it's very very similar. Yeah, that's uh,
- 0:53I think you're pretty spot on with that one. Yeah. Nothing flew
- 0:56over your head on that one nicely. Very did you say, man,
- 1:00you recently released that song California dam and say, how's the only reception been
- 1:04for it? Yeah? Doing good, dude. God. We even had
- 1:08the Alison s Chane singer Willem Duvall gave us some praise for it, so
- 1:14we were pretty pumped on that. It was like when those kind of things
- 1:15come in, it's like makes it all worthwhile, you know. But yeah,
- 1:19a lot of our a lot of our peeps have liked it a lot.
- 1:21I think it's angered a few people that maybe took it the wrong way.
- 1:26A few Christian conspiracy people maybe took it a little bit too seriously and
- 1:32thought that we might have actually sold our souls to Satan. But one of
- 1:36those few people, it's it's been received pretty well. Nice people. Just
- 1:40need to get light, mate, That's all I need to do with it.
- 1:42Love. Yeah, something that tells me more about the song from the
- 1:48musical point of view, bro, when what you've gone forward it? Uh,
- 1:52yeah, it really. It's definitely hits a lot of Alison Chainsy notes,
- 1:57a lot of sort of Marilyn Mancy kind of vibe Mansony kind of vibe.
- 2:00But you know, the most important or most impressive part of the song
- 2:06to me is the ending section. We had this idea of making a rift
- 2:09solo. So instead of your regular solo, which is just I guess defined
- 2:14by constantly changing melodic leads on the guitar, this is like, okay,
- 2:19what do we actually just make a rift that's changing every time? And the
- 2:23idea kind of built from there. At one point we have this full like
- 2:27thrash section that it went into, but it was a little bit too long
- 2:30at that point, so kind it down to a modest three and a half
- 2:32minutes, and yeah, I really love that section where we lit loot guitar
- 2:37and fire for the video. Yeah, pretty proud of that, and talking
- 2:40about the video mentioned an absolutely banging the music video that comes with it.
- 2:45It's like, did you run us through that? And what's happening? Yeah.
- 2:50We went out to a studio here in Long Beach and we made it
- 2:53look like all of the worst parts of California combined, sort of ally would
- 3:00Hell Escape with all the hobo tent city stuff and like random bikes. We
- 3:05actually paid a hobo that lives out front of our house to steal us a
- 3:08steal us a shopping cart. He said that he stole it from another bomb,
- 3:14which I don't feel too good about now they're here. I thought I
- 3:15was just going to go to the Safeways and steal it from there, but
- 3:19now he jacked from another bumb We just got a whole bunch of bells and
- 3:22whistles and built this set within within the studio and then had Luke and me
- 3:28walking out as much as we could. But then we couldn't do any of
- 3:31the flames in that studio. We had to go to another friend's studio that
- 3:36was out in Santa Anna. He's a cool South African guy and he's just
- 3:39like, gave us the keys. Oh yeah, Jake, you do whatever
- 3:42you want. So yeah, we got the gasoline, the lighter fluid and
- 3:46just kept lighting his guitar on fire over and over again until we had enough
- 3:50takes. And then the final time he's like asking for more and more the
- 3:53lighter fluid to he poured onto it. I'm like getting this. It's getting
- 3:55pretty sketchy out here, Luke. And uh that last time he had some
- 4:00much on it that has started traveling up his jacket and almost caught his hair
- 4:03on fire to run in with the wet blanket. It's pretty hectic. A
- 4:08lot of times. California Day been a standalone single mite or is it part
- 4:13of a big album or repay picture? Yeah, well, right now it's
- 4:16just in the standalone single phase. We recorded another five songs with the same
- 4:20dude, Mike Pepe, so we're hoping to get those pushed out early next
- 4:26year, so as they come out, we might sort of do what's called
- 4:30a waterfall release and sort of just compile them one after another. That's the
- 4:34only good thing about this singles game that you can do is Spotify These days
- 4:38is you can just sort of stack them on top of each other until the
- 4:42full album is built. And rather than giving everybody an album at once,
- 4:45where people with their twenty twenty three attention spans being so small, don't have
- 4:50to lose songs on it by them not having enough attention to listen to a
- 4:54whole album, we just give it to them one by one and then eventually
- 4:57they can listen to the whole album if they do have the patience, right.
- 5:00Waterfall effect, Yeah, waterfall release, I believe is what it's called
- 5:06for those here in Australia not familiar with oblim By, mate, tell us
- 5:10a bit about the band and any music. So me and my little brother
- 5:14actually grew up in Melbourne, Australia. I know you wouldn't hear that from
- 5:16the accent, but yeah, I moved it out here when I think it
- 5:19was twenty three, and uh Luke was about maybe eighteen when he moved out
- 5:25of here out here after high school and he started going to Berkeley College of
- 5:28Music, which is a real like hoity toity prestigious music school out here,
- 5:31and he's doing jazz guitar there. But he came to stay with me one
- 5:35summer and it's the drinking started and the playing guitar started, and we just
- 5:41never looked back. Dude. We're like, okay, you got to drop
- 5:43out of school, Luke, this is this is too much fun. We
- 5:45got to just keep doing this, dude. We started living that. I
- 5:47don't know if you've ever seen the Pantera Vulgar videos, but when I was
- 5:50a kid, that was just like our inspiration. We'd watched those all the
- 5:54time. And then yeah, we finally when he was of age and we're
- 5:59partying together little beat Shack. It was just like living the Pantera Vulgar videos
- 6:02dream and we had to just keep it going, dude. Yeah, And
- 6:06how different did you find the music scene ever there or what you had back
- 6:10on me in Melbourne? Well, I'll be honest, dude, I didn't
- 6:13really get to that many shows back when I lived in Melbourne. Like,
- 6:17we used to go a little bit of hip hop stuff every now and then,
- 6:20and there was a there was a bar called the Tote in Melbourne that
- 6:25some of our friends played in and wrote local rock bands blah blah blah.
- 6:29And I think I saw Jet years ago at uh it was called the Something.
- 6:34Lord Duke of windsor Duke of Windsor right next to where I went to
- 6:38college. But I feel like Australia, even though now it's it's had a
- 6:43real big resurgence to ross music, which is great. I feel like at
- 6:46the time rock wasn't too in vogue over there. So I'm glad that me
- 6:50and Luke dropped across the pond to start this out because I think it's been
- 6:57a better situation for us. Rock has got a very large audience, especially
- 7:00in the middle of the country still in America, so you can jump from
- 7:04show to show, our hour to hour and it goes pretty well. Have
- 7:09a decent, decent crowd out there. When you first started music over there,
- 7:13road, do you think the fact that you were from Australia helped or
- 7:15hinted or or it didn't really matter. I think because I've got the American
- 7:20accent because our mom's American. Even though Luke was born and raised in Australia,
- 7:24he's got an American accent too, I can actually put on a pretty
- 7:26decent Australian accent, but I won't. I won't bore you with it.
- 7:31Yeah, we came out here here and I just want one thing led to
- 7:35another and uh yeah digging it? Yeah cool? Reading through you press release,
- 7:41bro, it refers to your unique take on rock and roll? Can
- 7:45you elaborate on that? What's what's what are unique about it? What's unique
- 7:49to our take on rock and roll? Well, I guess it's not that
- 7:54unique because another band that we very much aspired to is Faith No More and
- 8:00that they really make every song its own complete vibe. There's no like two
- 8:05songs that sound alike. It's not like your average metalcore album where you hear
- 8:11your little soft intro and then bang, everything's in, and then it starts
- 8:15streaming in the verse, and then bang there's some clean vocals in the chorus.
- 8:18We try and paint a different color with every single song that we put
- 8:22out. I guess that would be one of the things that really separates us.
- 8:26Another thing that's been horribly calmon these days is bands are playing more and
- 8:31more backing track stuff, which I think is pretty weird for a rock and
- 8:35roll band. But what makes us truly unique? I can't say that we
- 8:41are truly unique. We definitely pull a lot of influence from a lot of
- 8:43different people. So maybe whoever wrote that press release, I should edit that
- 8:48somehow. Speaking of influences, might like you saw your influences bands like Allison
- 8:54Change, Sam Godden, Ride Against Machine and Fight Night all but your music's
- 8:58still to sound like your Ryan mate, so like, and in the writing
- 9:03stage of music, like how fun a line is there between imitation and inspiration
- 9:07and where do you draw that line? Well, I think something that does
- 9:11happen every now and then is me or Luke will show each other a riff
- 9:15and the other one will be like, yeah, that's pretty cool, but
- 9:18a little bit too close to this one, and oh damn, that is
- 9:20a bit close to that old pearl damn riff or something, so that one
- 9:24always has to get thrown away. But yeah, we just we have a
- 9:28vault of so many riffs and so many sort of basic structures for songs to
- 9:33draw up on that I don't think we're ever going to have to get too
- 9:37close to being considered a rip off. Although the other day is someone commented
- 9:41on the Instagram it was like an ad for that California demon that when he's
- 9:46doing the solo or the riff solo thing on the lot of the guitars on
- 9:48fire, And somebody commented well, this is a deaf Tones rip off.
- 9:52It's like deaf Tones rip off. How does this sound like deaf Tones?
- 9:56I'm thinking, oh, you know what, maybe he thinks it sounds like
- 9:58my own Summer, that bah Bad album him now, And I'm like,
- 10:03so, dude, it's a descending riff. Uh that's about the only thing
- 10:07that's similar. But even that's not similar because Luke's got Lammy going on in
- 10:09there. He's got us sending descending whatever sending, you know. And uh.
- 10:15Then other people in the chat were like, oh, this sounds a
- 10:18lot like Black Sabbath. Oh, this sounds a lot like was at the
- 10:20Gates. And I'm like, listen, dude. If people are saying everything
- 10:24from at the Gates the Black Sabbath to Allison Chane's, then clearly those bands
- 10:28that predated Deftones are not ripping off death tuns. We're probably safe on We're
- 10:33probably safe on the Summer ripoff too, I gotta say. And another quote
- 10:39I love you the press releaser is that you guys pride yourselves on making every
- 10:43show a party. Like that's pretty much about as Astralian as you can get.
- 10:46Yeah, it's definitely our strine wroots. We do love to party.
- 10:50We've got this one song. I don't know if I'm a lowed to swear,
- 10:52but I won't swear anyway. There's this one song called LGFU, which
- 10:58is an acrona for Let's get fed up, and it's definitely our party anthem.
- 11:05For live shows, we usually put it at the very last last song
- 11:09of the set. It always just sells a hell of a lot of booze
- 11:13and get people into it. And if there's a headliner band that plays after
- 11:18us, very many times they have pointed out that song in particular because it
- 11:24gets the crowd hyved and going, and they always go and by they rush
- 11:28to the bar at the end of the set and get get some more shots
- 11:31in them so that when the big boys after us come on, they're nicely
- 11:35primed with shots in them and ready to rock out for them. So yeah,
- 11:37we always want to make it feel like people are involved. You know.
- 11:41If that means jumping out in the crowd and singing into people's faces,
- 11:43if they're acting a little bit of zombies, that we'll do that. If
- 11:46that means like pouring the beer into Luke's mouth while he's doing a solo do
- 11:50that. But I mean the worst thing ever is when you're when you're playing
- 11:54like a high energy rock and roll show and you see the crowds just standing
- 12:00there, or even worse than that actually is when the crowd wants to have
- 12:03that fun night out, that big party rock and roll experience, and then
- 12:07you just got these guys sort of morosely standing there, just going through the
- 12:11motions. Like if you're not having fun doing it, the crowd's not going
- 12:16to have fun doing it, you know. Actually yeah, I mean speaking
- 12:20of love shows, you have you got any coming up that you want to
- 12:22sell a smith? Yeah. We're actually touring all across the country with a
- 12:26band from late eighties early nineties fame called Faster Pussycat. I think they were
- 12:33big in that whole Motley Crue era. So we're going out on tour with
- 12:37them for all of November, which is super great. We haven't been out
- 12:41since I think last year, so it's great. We've got a little bit
- 12:43of a lineup change in the band. New friend willis playing bass with us,
- 12:48so we've been practicing a lot with him, getting the chops already,
- 12:52and they super psyched to just get back in the van and go play twenty
- 12:56seven shows in thirty days from a friend bons band I'm from, Uh from
- 13:03the US and mid Light Devils just did to run the shows and they said
- 13:05they had a great job. Oh that's epic. That's a great name,
- 13:09Midnight Devil. I have to check them out. Very glad rocky sort of
- 13:13stuff, but fucking wholesome band. Very cool. Well I just saw today
- 13:16speaking of Australia. Uh, our good friends Candle Blocks, who we went
- 13:20out with, like I think it was a year and a half ago.
- 13:24Uh. They are just announced their Australian tour, so they're doing one in
- 13:26just about every city. I think. I don't know where you are?
- 13:30Are you Brisy? Yeah you sound like you're from Brisbane. Yeah, I
- 13:37thought that was announced was Brisbane. I think it's their first show down there,
- 13:39dude, So you gotta get out. Why don't you come with them?
- 13:43Dude, I'd love to if they if they offered, believe me,
- 13:48we'd be on the next plane. My guess is that they probably want to
- 13:52uh take a lot of phenomenal Australian local bands along with them and give them
- 13:58the chance to get more disposure to their fans. Et cetera. But hey,
- 14:03if Kevin Kevin, if you hear me, mate, and you want
- 14:05us to come, I'll book the flat today, dude, if you're speaking
- 14:07of a mate telling them, I'll push the whole fucking noussy boys coming home
- 14:11angle for you, mate, and we'll get a heap of people. Well,
- 14:13you got to go out and see him, even if we're not put
- 14:15on though, no, ra is it all my friend? Well before we
- 14:18go, mate, I'm started three new Spotify playlists up so our listeners can
- 14:22get acquainted with the bands of the interview. So use it your own songs.
- 14:26You've already given me the first one, I'm pretty sure. But a
- 14:28song for a playlist to get the party started? Second, let me move
- 14:31this god getting bad signal? Give me a secon mate, all right,
- 14:35I'll turn my video off for a second. That might help you. All
- 14:39right, cool, I think we're good. Now give us a song for
- 14:43a playlist to get the party started, one for a playlist to save your
- 14:46marriage, and one for a playlist to potentially end your marriage. Are these
- 14:50my songs? Are these other people's not your songs? Run my songs?
- 14:54Okay? So party? Oh say again? What was the first one party
- 14:58started, so that to be LGF party party started, I would say,
- 15:01let's go, let's go as great high energy, even though another one LGFU
- 15:05is good. That one's more like after the party's been going for a bit
- 15:09and you want to kick it on to the next level, but just to
- 15:13get the party going, party started, I'd say, either let's go to
- 15:18get popping, or maybe if you want to get the girls involved, you
- 15:20want the you want a little bit more uh, female attention. My kind
- 15:26of girl would be a good one for that. Yeah, Now I want
- 15:28to save your marriage. One to save the marriage. God, we got
- 15:33a lot of sassy ones, dude. W The W you know is kind
- 15:39of if. If the if the woman's willing to listen to reason, then
- 15:43the lyrics of the W you know might might make sense. It's all about
- 15:46a girl who's looking to the grass is always greener kind of scenario, like
- 15:52pretending like she could do better than you, and when she realizes what's out
- 15:56there is actually a hell of a lot worse than the devil she knows.
- 16:00Yeah, beautiful, and now about once to potentially end the marriage. On
- 16:04to end the marriage, uh and on of course, says, uh,
- 16:11I can't love you on the inside, but the outside puts on a damn
- 16:15good show. I'm with you because of what you look like, not what's
- 16:18inside. But I won't never let you know. So that's a pretty mean
- 16:19one. That was Yeah, that was and on that was for I was
- 16:25written about one of my ex girlfriends. She didn't she didn't take too kindly
- 16:26to that. That great inspiration. X skirl friends the best us everyone have
- 16:33a lot of our songs are a lot of the concepts for the songs.
- 16:36Had I knock one through, this, that and the other failed relationship.
- 16:40Very good check card bro very very nice to speak with you, brother.
- 16:42You in your single California game. But is that now? And she's a
- 16:45Parlamedo. Look forward to hear new stuff as she comes out. Absolutely,
- 16:51man, would you ever get to Brisbane? I'll definitely hit you up.
- 16:52I'll even pick you up from the airport, my briend. I love that
- 16:56dude. Bring the bring the stubbies, this girl, wash you no matter
