- 0:08Speaker 1: and also we'll hear more from Long Horn's head coach,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Steve Sarkashan coming off today's weekly press conference part of
- 0:17Speaker 1: our Long Horns Monday And of course we begin our

- 0:31Speaker 1: we bring you the press conference live at the bottom
- 0:34Speaker 1: of the hour at eleven thirty with sark And then
- 0:37Speaker 1: we know a lot of folks can't hear it at
- 0:39Speaker 1: that time, so what we do is we bring you
- 0:44Speaker 1: in SoundBite form the answers that he had to the
- 0:48Speaker 1: questions of the news conference, and we're going to have
- 0:50Speaker 1: that coming your way here in a little bit. But
- 0:55Speaker 1: also we're going to preview the World Series. Gene Watson,
- 0:58Speaker 1: our MLB insider in the Chicago White Sox front office
- 1:02Speaker 1: who correctly predicted that it would be the Dodgers against
- 1:05Speaker 1: the Yankees once he got to the NLC. Yes, now,
- 1:07Speaker 1: when the playoffs began, he had the padres and guardians
- 1:11Speaker 1: but after the Padres who won the wild Card sweeping Atlanta,
- 1:17Speaker 1: then after they lost to the Dodgers. I told him
- 1:21Speaker 1: he could have a chance to waffle and reconnect, and
- 1:26Speaker 1: he did and picked Los Angeles, and he came off
- 1:29Speaker 1: as Guardians pick, even though they had won their division series.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Came off of that and said he was going to
- 1:37Speaker 1: go with the Yankees to win. So it is the
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yankees and the Dodgers and they're playing. They will be
- 1:44Speaker 1: meeting in the World Series for the twelfth time. That's
- 1:46Speaker 1: more than any other two teams have faced off against
- 1:49Speaker 1: one another. So it'll be and but it's the first
- 1:55Speaker 1: time since nineteen eighty one. And if you go back
- 1:58Speaker 1: over the history of those teams, the Yankees dominated it
- 2:02Speaker 1: for many years. Here was an interesting number I think
- 2:05Speaker 1: I saw the Yankees and Dodgers met. I think it
- 2:10Speaker 1: was eleven times in forty years. That's a lot. Between
- 2:17Speaker 1: nineteen forty one and nineteen eighty one. They met eleven times.
- 2:22Speaker 1: First time they met nineteen forty one. Yankees won it
- 2:26Speaker 1: in five games, had two very memorable moments in it.
- 2:30Speaker 1: One in I believe it was Game three. Bill Bevins,
- 2:34Speaker 1: who had been kind of a journeyman Guy had carried
- 2:37Speaker 1: a no hitter into the ninth even though he had
- 2:38Speaker 1: allowed one run, had a no hitter going, and the
- 2:42Speaker 1: Dodgers broke it up with a cookie lava jetto double
- 2:44Speaker 1: off the wall at Ebbittsfield, and the Dodgers won that game.
- 2:47Speaker 1: But the very next game was when it looked like
- 2:51Speaker 1: the Dodgers were gonna win. They were up in the
- 2:54Speaker 1: ninth and a drop third strike allowed a runner to
- 2:57Speaker 1: reach and the Yankees ended up I think scoring three
- 3:00Speaker 1: runs in the inning, and they won that anyway. They
- 3:03Speaker 1: then wrapped up the series the next day they won
- 3:05Speaker 1: in five games. They met in nineteen forty seven. That
- 3:07Speaker 1: was actually the Bevans no hitters nineteen forty seven, not
- 3:10Speaker 1: forty one. In forty seven, Bevans carried the no hitter
- 3:14Speaker 1: into the ninth and the Dodgers beat him. But also
- 3:17Speaker 1: in nineteen forty seven, there's this incredible catch that Aljianfrido,
- 3:22Speaker 1: the center fielder, made right at the four fifteen mark
- 3:26Speaker 1: there in the canyons in centerfield Yankee Stadium, which would
- 3:29Speaker 1: have been a three run homer from Joe DiMaggio, and
- 3:33Speaker 1: he hauled it down and I believe in Game six,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and Demaggio in what was described as the only show
- 3:41Speaker 1: of emotion ever in his entire Major league career, we
- 3:44Speaker 1: see him kick the dirt like right near second base.
- 3:47Speaker 1: He was rounding second when it was caught or nearing second.
- 3:50Speaker 1: But the Yankees won that in seven games nineteen forty nine,
- 3:55Speaker 1: each team won a game, the first two games by
- 3:58Speaker 1: a one to nothing final score. Game one, game two,
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yankees won, the next three they won. Nineteen fifty two,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yankees won it six games. What preserved it diving in
- 4:08Speaker 1: a little pop up with a young second basement by
- 4:10Speaker 1: the name of Billy Martin nineteen fifty three. Actually, I
- 4:16Speaker 1: guess was the Billy Martin when that was in six games.
- 4:18Speaker 1: In seven games and fifty two, the Yankees won, So
- 4:20Speaker 1: they won all these in a row. The Dodgers finally
- 4:23Speaker 1: broke through in nineteen fifty five, Brooklyn's only World championship.
- 4:27Speaker 1: They used to say, wait till next year. Next year
- 4:28Speaker 1: finally arrived. The Dodgers won it in seven games. In
- 4:32Speaker 1: fifty five, Sandy Amios with a great running catch near
- 4:36Speaker 1: the wall to take away what would have been a
- 4:40Speaker 1: double to give the Yankees the lead or a triple
- 4:43Speaker 1: off the bat of Yogi Bearra, but he made the catch,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and they said he never would have made the catch
- 4:48Speaker 1: had he not been left handed with the glove on
- 4:49Speaker 1: the right hand running toward the foul pole that made
- 4:53Speaker 1: the catch. Yankees came back the next year in fifty
- 4:55Speaker 1: six and beat him in seven games. Highlighted Game five
- 4:58Speaker 1: the only perfect game World Series history, and Don Larson
- 5:02Speaker 1: did that. A journeyman did that in Game five. The
- 5:06Speaker 1: next time they met, the Dodgers were in Los Angeles.
- 5:08Speaker 1: It was nineteen sixty three and La was Sandy Kofax.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Don Drysdale swept the Yankees, who had Mickey Mantle of course,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and Roger Marrison all of those, but the Dodgers swept them.
- 5:19Speaker 1: See only time one side has swept the other that
- 5:22Speaker 1: they met twice in nineteen seventy seven to seventy eight,
- 5:27Speaker 1: back to back years. Great ESPN thirty for thirty documentary
- 5:32Speaker 1: called the Bronx Zoo and it was something else and
- 5:35Speaker 1: Reggie Jackson hits the five home runs. In seventy seven
- 5:38Speaker 1: and seventy eight they went again. So the Yankees won
- 5:41Speaker 1: those two back to back, but in the last time
- 5:43Speaker 1: they met nineteen eighty one was the strike year, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: the Dodgers dropped the first two games of the series
- 5:49Speaker 1: in New York and then won four straight, becoming the
- 5:51Speaker 1: first team in MLB history two win four consecutive games
- 5:57Speaker 1: to win a World Series after dropping the first two.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So they met at times. The Yankees have won eight
- 6:02Speaker 1: of those, but since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles,
- 6:05Speaker 1: the last four times that they've met have been when
- 6:08Speaker 1: the Dodgers played in LA. They've split those four, so
- 6:11Speaker 1: that sets the backdrop for that. So's that's how to be,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and we'll see how it goes. Starting Friday night in
- 6:19Speaker 1: Los Angeles. Games one and two Friday and Saturday at
- 6:22Speaker 1: Dodgers Stadium. Sunday's a travel day. They'll play Monday Tuesday.
- 6:26Speaker 1: If necessary, Wednesday Game five in the Bronx at the
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yankee Stadium. If it has to go back to LA
- 6:33Speaker 1: for a game six, there'd be a travel day on Thursday.
- 6:37Speaker 1: They would play Friday, November first, and if they have
- 6:42Speaker 1: a final game, it would be Saturday. A seventh game
- 6:44Speaker 1: would be Saturday, November second. So it's set the stage
- 6:48Speaker 1: for that. But how did they get there? And who
- 6:51Speaker 1: could win this thing? Coming up. We'll visit with Gene Watson,
- 6:54Speaker 1: our MLB insider, to talk about it, and then we're
- 6:56Speaker 1: going to hear more from Long One, said coach Steve Sarkesan.
- 6:58Speaker 1: More on the NFL, More coming up on sports Radio
- 7:02Speaker 1: AM thirteen, under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
