She Faked Her Brother_s Death for PTO · NO FILTER

0:00
Speaker 1: The conversation started with her screaming that a ghost was
0:04
Speaker 1: in the house and the house was.
0:06
Speaker 2: Hunted because I caught my man cheating, so I burned
0:08
Speaker 2: his house down.
0:10
Speaker 3: We paid her based on her word, but now know
0:13
Speaker 3: that her brother did not die and she was lying
0:17
Speaker 3: from day one.
0:18
Speaker 1: Oh, this is the Bad Hire, the show with the
0:21
Speaker 1: best stories about the worst employees.
0:24
Speaker 3: We fired him.
0:24
Speaker 1: Of course, people are crazy. It's like an hr nightmare rife.
0:28
Speaker 1: One Bad Hire stole all of it crazy stuff.
0:32
Speaker 4: She got what she deserved.
0:34
Speaker 1: Oh, I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
0:37
Speaker 1: dive into real life stories from the wild world of
0:41
Speaker 1: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
0:45
Speaker 1: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when they are
0:48
Speaker 1: cautionary tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started.
0:54
Speaker 1: Hey everyone, and welcome back to The Bad Hire, the
0:56
Speaker 1: show with the best stories about the worst employees. So
1:02
Speaker 1: welcome back, as I'm happy to have you. This is
1:04
Speaker 1: Morgan and Emma. Hi, guys, Hi, So we get we good.
1:08
Speaker 1: We good to get back. Yep, it's been a while.
1:10
Speaker 1: We take a little bit of break for the holidays,
1:12
Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah, I don't know that it'll be a
1:14
Speaker 1: break when the release schedule, but we didn't. Yeah, we
1:17
Speaker 1: have a shot since before Christmas, so it's fun.
1:19
Speaker 3: We shot last week, not last week, but week before
1:21
Speaker 3: last with Nathan.
1:24
Speaker 2: You.
1:25
Speaker 1: Oh, I don't remember. I was just telling you I
1:33
Speaker 1: watched clips. I watched some clips, and I'll be like,
1:35
Speaker 1: oh my god, I don't remember that. I don't remember
1:37
Speaker 1: doing that. I don't remember sending that. Yeah, it's pretty
1:41
Speaker 1: pretty funny. Oh my gosh. So you know the drill.
1:43
Speaker 1: Every week we dive into the wildest and weirdest. Uh,
1:46
Speaker 1: some jaw dropping stories for real. You guys shocked me
1:49
Speaker 1: at which' s growned up. But what's really kind of
1:52
Speaker 1: cool right now is that a lot of we're starting
1:56
Speaker 1: to get a lot of submissions and a lot of
1:58
Speaker 1: guest requests, and we're so we're getting submissions online. Our
2:03
Speaker 1: our email outred outreach to people that we think would
2:06
Speaker 1: be great on the show is starting to do results.
2:08
Speaker 1: I think we have how many guests in the pipeline
2:13
Speaker 1: pipeline right now that we're interviewing.
2:14
Speaker 5: Five active guests in the pipeline right now, sixty five guests,
2:20
Speaker 5: sixty five people lined up to try to come on
2:21
Speaker 5: the show, and so what we're doing now is we're
2:23
Speaker 5: shooting some segments with them and stead of coming and
2:26
Speaker 5: trying to coordinate everyone's schedule to get here on the couch,
2:29
Speaker 5: you know, one of the producers, you.
2:32
Speaker 1: Or Nathan, you guys are Nathan, reach out.
2:34
Speaker 6: To them and do a one on one segment with
2:38
Speaker 6: them and just get to know them and then let
2:40
Speaker 6: them tell their stories. And it sounds like it's it's
2:43
Speaker 6: working pretty well and it's pretty cool.
2:45
Speaker 1: I think I think we played one now. I remember
2:48
Speaker 1: h yes, because we played the we we played the
2:53
Speaker 1: clip from the recruiter from zoom Yes yeah, yeah, yeah,
2:57
Speaker 1: that was a nuts nuts so and so those are
3:00
Speaker 1: starting to line up and stack up, and so we
3:02
Speaker 1: encourage you to keep going. You know, if you're if
3:04
Speaker 1: you've got a story you want to be on the show.
3:06
Speaker 1: You can be interviewed in a segment one of our
3:08
Speaker 1: producers reach out to you, or you can submit a
3:10
Speaker 1: story online. You know, we've got a young man, Corey
3:14
Speaker 1: who'll reach out to you. If you respond, he's going
3:16
Speaker 1: to reach out to you. Try to set up a
3:18
Speaker 1: time to just quickly talk to you, help you understand
3:20
Speaker 1: what it's about. And then he'll book you into a
3:23
Speaker 1: time for the segment, and so that's that's what it does. Now,
3:29
Speaker 1: you could win ten thousand dollars if you give us
3:30
Speaker 1: the best story of the year.
3:31
Speaker 4: Yeah.
3:32
Speaker 1: Right, So you submit to that story, whether you tell
3:34
Speaker 1: it on video, you write it and we tell it
3:36
Speaker 1: either way, if you win ten thousand bucks, are excited
3:39
Speaker 1: about that?
3:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, why not give it a shot?
3:41
Speaker 1: Yeah for sure. All right, So let's get let's get started.
3:46
Speaker 1: You guys ready, Yeah, all right? So now where did
3:53
Speaker 1: this story come from?
3:54
Speaker 4: Which one of the first one.
3:55
Speaker 1: The ghosting candidate?
3:57
Speaker 3: I'm not sure. I don't think. I don't think think
4:00
Speaker 3: it was submitted to us.
4:02
Speaker 4: I don't know. I'd have to go pull it.
4:03
Speaker 3: Up because normally, if it's been submitted.
4:05
Speaker 1: I'm making it okay, because this sounds like I'm going
4:09
Speaker 1: to read the story, but it sounds like someone's trying
4:11
Speaker 1: to be a mystery writer or it really spooks me out.
4:15
Speaker 1: So either way, I don't know that it's about a
4:18
Speaker 1: terrible employee, but it's about kind of a weird experience.
4:22
Speaker 1: And so when I read it, I was like, okay,
4:26
Speaker 1: not one hundred percent here.
4:27
Speaker 2: But it could have also been an anonymous submitted story.
4:30
Speaker 2: So I'll look for it while you tell it.
4:32
Speaker 1: It doesn't really matter. But have you read it? Okay,
4:37
Speaker 1: well you can, I have to react. Yeah, so you
4:40
Speaker 1: react to it afterwards. So I skeluled a call with
4:43
Speaker 1: a candidate for a software engineer role whose name was Cy.
4:49
Speaker 1: There was no photo on LinkedIn, so I was unsure
4:53
Speaker 1: of gender or anything else. So ill I called at
4:56
Speaker 1: the time scheduled, and a woman answered, okay, that makes sense.
5:00
Speaker 1: The conversation started with her screaming that a ghost was
5:05
Speaker 1: in the house and the house was haunted.
5:07
Speaker 3: In her house.
5:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, so called someone for an interview. Someone answers, the're
5:14
Speaker 1: screaming about a ghost. She was very scared and even
5:17
Speaker 1: wanted me to give her advice on what to do,
5:20
Speaker 1: and she didn't want me to hang up the phone
5:22
Speaker 1: as she was afraid to be alone. I don't think
5:26
Speaker 1: they even know this. No, this is the candidate. Who
5:29
Speaker 1: this is. She told me that she didn't want to
5:31
Speaker 1: go outside because the ghost was going to hunt for her,
5:35
Speaker 1: as happens in American horror stories.
5:38
Speaker 4: She says, it sounds like the show we watched what Supernatural?
5:41
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that does sound very so is this.
5:44
Speaker 1: A spoof off for show. After several minutes of listening
5:48
Speaker 1: to her scream and trying to calm her, I finally
5:51
Speaker 1: ended up thinking I would just add this to my
5:53
Speaker 1: rolodex of like creepy recruiting stories, which is kind of
5:56
Speaker 1: funny in and of itself. I know recruiters have probably
5:59
Speaker 1: stay of these weird recruiting stories. On the following day,
6:03
Speaker 1: I received an email from the same candidate saying that
6:07
Speaker 1: they didn't receive any call at the scheduled time. I
6:11
Speaker 1: told them that I did call, and a woman answered
6:13
Speaker 1: and even checked with them that the phone number was correct,
6:16
Speaker 1: and it was We scheduled again, and when I called,
6:18
Speaker 1: a man answered that was the real candidate and said
6:22
Speaker 1: that the phone never rang the previous day. We had
6:24
Speaker 1: our conversation normally and moved him forward in the process,
6:27
Speaker 1: although he was finally not selected. But to this moment,
6:30
Speaker 1: I never found out who I talked to that day.
6:34
Speaker 4: That's really creepy.
6:34
Speaker 3: And he said that there wasn't like anybody else.
6:37
Speaker 1: In the house with the phone. That's crazy, that's really right.
6:41
Speaker 1: What she called the wrong er. Maybe someone just like.
6:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe said but still like to call the wrong number.
6:47
Speaker 3: And that's who answers And that's what she said, is like, yeah, DoD,
6:50
Speaker 3: that's still really really I.
6:52
Speaker 1: Got you know the number of times when you're just
6:55
Speaker 1: doing these kind of random interviews and like, uh, you're
7:00
Speaker 1: just calling a complete stranger. It is an absolute crap
7:03
Speaker 1: shoot on who's going to be the other rant? Yeah,
7:06
Speaker 1: you're look at that resumes or they're writing beautiful things
7:08
Speaker 1: about themselves. You get him up the phone, they're like,
7:11
Speaker 1: you know, who is this person? Have you ever seen
7:15
Speaker 1: some of those clips of on TikTok or something where
7:18
Speaker 1: the guys he like does these like he'll get on
7:22
Speaker 1: an interview, Oh yes, and he just messes with recruiters
7:25
Speaker 1: and I feel so bad for them that he waste
7:27
Speaker 1: their time. Yeah. I always say if it happened to me,
7:30
Speaker 1: I would hope that I would like, like, just be
7:33
Speaker 1: a good sport about it, just like play along. You know,
7:36
Speaker 1: you've got all if you got a busy day in
7:38
Speaker 1: your foot, you know, and you're driving hard and and
7:41
Speaker 1: you waste some time. But he like he'll be at
7:43
Speaker 1: a drive through eating and she was like, you're gonna
7:46
Speaker 1: drive through? No, I'm not.
7:50
Speaker 3: He just wait, does he schedule these interviews?
7:53
Speaker 1: Yeah? He schedules these interviews. Then he puts himself in
7:56
Speaker 1: some odd place and then swears he's not there. He's like,
8:00
Speaker 1: she's like you're eating. He's like, I'm not, you know, right,
8:06
Speaker 1: And I got it credit many of them. What gets
8:10
Speaker 1: me is for how here's what tells you the life
8:12
Speaker 1: of a recruiter is very challenging and they see a
8:15
Speaker 1: lot of stuff. When you watch the front of that
8:18
Speaker 1: right the first thirty seconds, him acting a fool, Yeah,
8:22
Speaker 1: they stay professional in most cases, they stay professional and
8:24
Speaker 1: just try to keep it moving. And you're like, it's
8:27
Speaker 1: clearly a troll. But yeah, the recruiters staying locked in.
8:31
Speaker 1: And it's only after like it's gone to the extreme
8:35
Speaker 1: that the recruiters.
8:36
Speaker 5: Like, okay, you're like a right.
8:40
Speaker 1: They must see to stay locked in that long. Like
8:43
Speaker 1: you watch it, TikTok, you're like total troll right off
8:46
Speaker 1: the back. You're lacking within the first ten seconds and
8:48
Speaker 1: they're staying locked in.
8:49
Speaker 3: I wouldn't be able to keep a straight thing. Yeah,
8:53
Speaker 3: there's no way.
8:53
Speaker 4: No, I don't know.
8:57
Speaker 1: Anyway, Kudos to kudos to whatever I see you. That
9:03
Speaker 1: just shows me how much say they probably put up
9:05
Speaker 1: before we dive back into the chaos on the bad hire.

9:44
Speaker 1: That's bc h ex dot io. The magician by this
9:51
Speaker 1: story was what we called it the magician on splent Okay,
9:56
Speaker 1: this is got to be a submitted story because someone's
9:58
Speaker 1: trying to be a.
9:59
Speaker 4: I don't think this is I don't where did it
10:01
Speaker 4: come from. I think that it was a Reddit one.
10:03
Speaker 1: It was okay, so well, someone.
10:04
Speaker 3: Something that from last time that we didn't get to film.
10:07
Speaker 1: Okay, so someone wrote this, and you know, sometimes they
10:11
Speaker 1: try to be creative with they're writing. Either way, I
10:18
Speaker 1: love them. Also, we'll try it anyway. Once U part
10:20
Speaker 1: of Full Moon, we had a we had to reject
10:23
Speaker 1: a candidate After an on site interview. The process went
10:26
Speaker 1: forward with a little fanfare or drama, but the real
10:30
Speaker 1: twist was later revealed the candidate was moonlighting as a magician.
10:36
Speaker 1: It's ok It's worth noting that this was not the
10:39
Speaker 1: reason for the rejection. Okay, you're a magician. Oh, I'm sorry,
10:43
Speaker 1: we don't take magicians. Yeah, what is it? What does
10:46
Speaker 1: he say?
10:47
Speaker 3: That a position he was applying for.
10:49
Speaker 1: What does it say?
10:49
Speaker 6: What?
10:51
Speaker 1: It doesn't? It doesn't. It was worth noting that that's
10:56
Speaker 1: not the reason we didn't. Okay, you know, but who
11:00
Speaker 1: doesn't love a little magic from time to time. A
11:02
Speaker 1: little while later, a new candidate appeared, and our recruiting
11:05
Speaker 1: by blunt. This candidate had some striking similarities to the
11:11
Speaker 1: old magician friend. Tiptoeing forward cautiously, we asked if there
11:15
Speaker 1: was any relation to or if a new magician candidate.
11:20
Speaker 1: What came next made our jaws hit the floor and
11:22
Speaker 1: solidified his place in our collection of weird recruiting stories.
11:27
Speaker 1: The candidate proceeded to tell us that the magician candidate
11:30
Speaker 1: was none other than his identical twin brother. Obviously, we're
11:36
Speaker 1: hesitant to believe this. I mean, you know, what are
11:39
Speaker 1: the odds of having identical twin brothers following the same
11:42
Speaker 1: career path and applying for the same position. To back
11:45
Speaker 1: up his claim, the candidate and whipped out his phone
11:48
Speaker 1: to show us doctored photos and fake social media profiles.
11:52
Speaker 1: It's we set up there the day before. Our recruiters
11:55
Speaker 1: were too sharp to be fooled. The magician then showed
11:57
Speaker 1: us his real disparian trick ghost in this after that encounter.
12:01
Speaker 2: This reminds me of impractical jokers when they try and
12:04
Speaker 2: have as many disguised as they can to check in
12:06
Speaker 2: for see how long it will take them to realize
12:09
Speaker 2: it's a person.
12:10
Speaker 3: Like Yes, it's like they're like checking in for like somewhere,
12:15
Speaker 3: and they have like the check in person at the desk,
12:17
Speaker 3: and they walk in wearing a certain disguise and they
12:21
Speaker 3: have and then they come around and walk back through
12:22
Speaker 3: again in a different disguise and see if the check
12:25
Speaker 3: in person notices isn't exactly It's never.
12:28
Speaker 1: Happened to me, but it surely happened, Like like, surely
12:31
Speaker 1: this happens where people just kind of reinvent themselves to
12:34
Speaker 1: try to reapply. Yeah, I mean, book didn't do good
12:37
Speaker 1: in an interview, but I learned I'll just try again for sure.
12:41
Speaker 1: It was crazy, all right, Morgan, I think you're up.
12:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, all right.
12:46
Speaker 2: My first story is titled The Felon with a Heart,
12:49
Speaker 2: so it's not a horror story but a heartbreak story.
12:51
Speaker 2: I was at a job fair years ago, hiring for
12:54
Speaker 2: logistics employees when this young man comes up to me
12:57
Speaker 2: and asks me if we hire felons. I told him
12:59
Speaker 2: that it did, hinted on whether the felon would be
13:01
Speaker 2: considered work related or not. For the felony, for example,
13:05
Speaker 2: felony duy would not hander him for working for us
13:08
Speaker 2: since he was not a truck driver. He proceeded to
13:11
Speaker 2: tell me that he just finished a five year centage
13:13
Speaker 2: for distribution of drugs and his girlfriend was pregnant when
13:16
Speaker 2: he went in, he got out and only wants to
13:18
Speaker 2: focus on taking care of his daughter. It was him
13:22
Speaker 2: main Oh, it was his main focus in life, and
13:24
Speaker 2: that broke my heart. We couldn't hire him, but I
13:26
Speaker 2: sure wish we had made that exception. That was a
13:29
Speaker 2: submitted story, right.
13:31
Speaker 3: That one was?
13:31
Speaker 4: I don't think that one was really okay.
13:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that does someone posted that, Yeah yeah, yeah,
13:37
Speaker 1: but they this has actually got a cool story, I mean,
13:41
Speaker 1: have a cool vibe in here to this. Yeah, and
13:44
Speaker 1: that it's been five it's been five years. Tell me
13:48
Speaker 1: he just finished a five year cent. So he's just
13:50
Speaker 1: out and for distribution of drugs and so and she's
13:57
Speaker 1: you know, wanting to see if she can help. But
14:00
Speaker 1: and what's interesting in here is it does outline how
14:04
Speaker 1: some companies think, right and how they're supposed to think.
14:07
Speaker 1: And that is is is is it job related? You know?
14:11
Speaker 1: Some some would say that, you know, many are job related.
14:15
Speaker 1: There's lots of reasons how it could be job related.
14:17
Speaker 1: But is it job related? In it? In it? You know,
14:20
Speaker 1: since they're not driving, you know, they could have a dui.
14:26
Speaker 1: But when you go distribution and drugs, typically an organization
14:33
Speaker 1: or company is going to want some more time to
14:34
Speaker 1: burn off right before they see them. You hope they
14:41
Speaker 1: would do like an individualized assessment or personal you know,
14:44
Speaker 1: and instead of just rejecting them totally, would give them
14:47
Speaker 1: a chance to tell their story. You know, who knows
14:50
Speaker 1: when he was in prison, he could have gone back
14:52
Speaker 1: to school, he could have gotten his ged, could have
14:54
Speaker 1: all types of classes, you know, and really worked hard
14:58
Speaker 1: during his five years to Yeah, you could take into account,
15:03
Speaker 1: but I don't know.
15:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't even consider that a lad higher. I
15:07
Speaker 2: feel like it's like in the process higher kind of thing.
15:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, so hopefully he'll be a super great higher.
15:14
Speaker 3: Yeah in the future, Yeah for sure.
15:16
Speaker 1: All right.
15:17
Speaker 4: My next one is titled It's All Up in Flames. Now.
15:20
Speaker 2: We were in final rounds with a woman for an
15:21
Speaker 2: in house designer role. She was a very promising candidate.
15:24
Speaker 2: We get back the offer on the table and she says,
15:28
Speaker 2: the final step is just a background check. There's dead
15:31
Speaker 2: silence on the phone, and finally the woman says, well,
15:33
Speaker 2: I have to go ahead and admit that I won't
15:35
Speaker 2: pass the criminal background check. We ask her why, and
15:37
Speaker 2: she says, because I caught my man cheating, so I
15:39
Speaker 2: burned his house down.
15:44
Speaker 4: At least she's honest.
15:47
Speaker 3: Good for her.
15:47
Speaker 4: But yeah, then, so I feel like you could take
15:52
Speaker 4: that multiple ways. I mean, I don't know if you
15:54
Speaker 4: got the job or not.
15:56
Speaker 1: I don't know.
15:57
Speaker 2: I mean, you imagine the Oh my gosh, I mean,
16:01
Speaker 2: what do you say straight up back, like, oh, okay, okay,
16:04
Speaker 2: I'm glad she told the truth, though.
16:06
Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, at least she's.
16:09
Speaker 4: Her designer role too, So she had a creative like following.
16:12
Speaker 3: Because if she didn't say anything and the background check
16:15
Speaker 3: comes back and the like, So, why do you have
16:17
Speaker 3: like an artist in church.
16:21
Speaker 1: Hoping it slips.
16:22
Speaker 4: Through literally maybe attended murdered.
16:24
Speaker 1: No, she did the right thing. She did the right thing. Yeah,
16:28
Speaker 1: she talked about it up front, said what it was,
16:30
Speaker 1: and gave them an opportunity to ask some questions.
16:33
Speaker 3: I thought you were saying she did the right thing.
16:37
Speaker 4: We cannot promote Arson.
16:39
Speaker 3: On the channel.
16:40
Speaker 1: Emma was like, go girl, good for her. No, oh
16:47
Speaker 1: my gosh, all right, Emma, what do you got me?
16:52
Speaker 3: Okay, I've got to today. Both of the Yes, both
16:57
Speaker 3: of my stories were submitted for other contests, but they
17:00
Speaker 3: wanted to stay anonymous, So I gotcha. I'm not gonna
17:02
Speaker 3: say like who submitted it or anything. This first one
17:05
Speaker 3: sounded sounds like really ominous, like there's it's not super specific, gotcha,
17:12
Speaker 3: but I'm I'm gonna read it anymore. I still remember
17:16
Speaker 3: how confident I felt the day we made the offer.
17:18
Speaker 3: On paper. This hire was perfect, impressive resume, strong interview answers,
17:23
Speaker 3: glowing references. They spoke our language, understood our mission and
17:27
Speaker 3: assured us they'd hit the ground running. After months of searching,
17:31
Speaker 3: it felt like a win. Spoiler alert, it was not
17:34
Speaker 3: a win. Within the first few weeks, small.
17:39
Speaker 1: Famous like last words in a good hire writer about
17:41
Speaker 1: are after months of searching, Yeah, I felt like a win.
17:44
Speaker 1: Yeah when we hired this person. Yeah.
17:46
Speaker 3: Within the first few weeks, small red flags began to surface.
17:50
Speaker 3: Deadlines are missed, communication was vague, Tasks that should have
17:54
Speaker 3: taken hours dragged into days. At first I blamed onboarding,
17:58
Speaker 3: then the workload, then myself. I doubled down on support,
18:02
Speaker 3: offered clear instructions, adjusted timelines, anything to make it work.
18:06
Speaker 3: Instead of improving, things quietly unraveled. Projects stalled because others
18:10
Speaker 3: had to redo their work. Team morale dipped as frustration grew.
18:14
Speaker 3: Meetings became tense, with more energy spent managing problems than
18:17
Speaker 3: building solutions. What hurt most wasn't just the lost productivity,
18:21
Speaker 3: It was the slow erosion of trust within the team.
18:24
Speaker 3: The biggest lesson came when I realized the issue wasn't skill,
18:26
Speaker 3: it was alignment. This person didn't take ownership. Feedback was
18:30
Speaker 3: met with defensive defensiveness instead of curiosity. Accountability was always redirected,
18:35
Speaker 3: never absorbed. What we thought was confidence turned out to
18:38
Speaker 3: be over confidence, and what we assumed was experience masked
18:41
Speaker 3: as unwillingness to adapt. By the time we made the
18:44
Speaker 3: difficult decision to part ways, the cost was far greater
18:47
Speaker 3: than their salary. We had lost time, momentum, and the
18:50
Speaker 3: sense of psychological safety within the team. Rebuilding took months.
18:55
Speaker 3: That bad hire changed how I lead forever.
18:58
Speaker 1: Now.
18:58
Speaker 3: I listened more closely to how can, and it's talk
19:00
Speaker 3: about failure, not to success. I prioritize values and accountability
19:04
Speaker 3: over polish, and I trust early signals and stuff explaining
19:09
Speaker 3: them away. It was an expensive lesson, but one that
19:14
Speaker 3: reshaped our hiring process for the better.
19:16
Speaker 1: Wow.
19:18
Speaker 3: I thought it was worded very well. Yeah, I just
19:21
Speaker 3: also I just felt like it wasn't super specific on
19:24
Speaker 3: like and.
19:25
Speaker 2: I think it was probably because she was trying to
19:27
Speaker 2: maintain that yeah anonymous.
19:30
Speaker 3: And I guess I guess also she was trying to
19:31
Speaker 3: be relatable because I'm sure that there's been.
19:36
Speaker 1: Y Yeah, so this you know who wrote this is
19:40
Speaker 1: not just telling a story, but like trying to help
19:46
Speaker 1: you understand, like how you could be better because she's
19:48
Speaker 1: waking out, like listen, here's here's here's what I can.
19:53
Speaker 1: You know she got early warning signs.
19:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, because that's kind of the point of the show anyways,
19:58
Speaker 3: to learn from the uh, you know, to learn from
20:02
Speaker 3: to learn from the stories that we tell.
20:04
Speaker 1: Someone burning down their house.
20:06
Speaker 2: But like to keep her like anonymous still the industry
20:10
Speaker 2: that she works in, because we do know who the
20:12
Speaker 2: individual is.
20:13
Speaker 4: She just doesn't want everybody else to know. It's a
20:15
Speaker 4: super important industry. Safety is super important.
20:17
Speaker 2: And I think like whatever happened must have been a
20:20
Speaker 2: big enough deal for her to write.
20:22
Speaker 1: When you've got somebody failing and then not taking accountability
20:25
Speaker 1: and then resisting back and getting defensive. You know, she's
20:29
Speaker 1: right to point out, it just starts, it just starts
20:31
Speaker 1: deteriorating the entire team. And you know, I remember talking about,
20:37
Speaker 1: you know, skills versus behaviors, traits and behaviors, and this
20:42
Speaker 1: is the traits and behaviors miss higher. And you know,
20:45
Speaker 1: skills can Skills don't necessarily lead the way, or I
20:51
Speaker 1: don't think they lead the way when you hire someone,
20:53
Speaker 1: because this is certainly someone who probably was higher on
20:56
Speaker 1: the skills list.
20:58
Speaker 3: And well I understand how they probably wanted to like,
21:00
Speaker 3: also respect the privacy of the person that they were
21:03
Speaker 3: talking about. Probably the the way that the story was
21:05
Speaker 3: worded sided super professional.
21:07
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's tell written by some many very professional Yeah.
21:10
Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, and some good learning there. Really.
21:14
Speaker 1: I loved how she or he I don't actually know
21:16
Speaker 1: said they overlooked early warning sons in the interview process.
21:24
Speaker 1: So cool. What's next?
21:26
Speaker 3: The next one is called the Ghost of Insurance Past.
21:29
Speaker 1: Oh wait, another ghost story for our contest. Okay, what
21:33
Speaker 1: they wanted to stay it on this? Okay, crossing my
21:35
Speaker 1: fingers for them.
21:36
Speaker 3: Okay. I was hiring a benefits manager in Q four
21:39
Speaker 3: twenty twenty five. I considered myself lucky to find a
21:42
Speaker 3: great candidate with almost thirty years of experience. She joined
21:45
Speaker 3: on a Thursday, did orientation, and then came back Friday
21:49
Speaker 3: for training. That Sunday night, she called and told me
21:51
Speaker 3: that her brother had passed away and she needed to
21:53
Speaker 3: go to New York for a week. I worked for
21:55
Speaker 3: a generous company with a great culture, so we went
21:58
Speaker 3: ahead and paid her three days of berevement wow holiday
22:00
Speaker 3: because it was Thanksgiving week, and a vacation day because
22:03
Speaker 3: she had earned a half day. I checked on her
22:05
Speaker 3: well being frequently while she was away. The following Monday,
22:08
Speaker 3: she asked to work remote because her flight had arrived late.
22:11
Speaker 3: I agreed and told her to do online training. She
22:14
Speaker 3: showed up Tuesday. On Wednesday, she came in, picked up
22:17
Speaker 3: her check and said she'd be right back, and she
22:19
Speaker 3: never returned. Oh, wouldn't answer our calls or texts, and
22:22
Speaker 3: had us very worried. We called her emergency contact. They
22:25
Speaker 3: did like a police well wellbeing check on her or whatever,
22:29
Speaker 3: and still didn't hear anything back. When her next check
22:32
Speaker 3: was due, it was a paper check, and she called
22:34
Speaker 3: us to and then she called us raging that her
22:36
Speaker 3: check hadn't been direct deposited.
22:38
Speaker 4: She called the.
22:39
Speaker 3: Department of Labor, cussed us all out, called incessantly, et cetera.
22:44
Speaker 3: We paid her based on her word, but now know
22:47
Speaker 3: that her brother did not die, and she was lying
22:50
Speaker 3: from day one. Oh gosh, it's like that one guy
22:53
Speaker 3: that live and said that his mom died. Oh yeah,
22:56
Speaker 3: and then his mom like called he was like hey see, okay, yeah.
23:00
Speaker 3: Or there was also one where she was like, oh,
23:02
Speaker 3: my husband, my husband died in the rick. Yeah, and
23:05
Speaker 3: then her husband, yeah, her husband called the office and
23:08
Speaker 3: asked for her.
23:09
Speaker 4: This is crazy.
23:11
Speaker 1: It's uh yeah, deaths. Deaths in the family happened a
23:15
Speaker 1: lot around the holidays, and to extend out the holidays.
23:18
Speaker 3: Really, it's crazy. I just think it's an insane thing
23:21
Speaker 3: to lie about the family members.
23:23
Speaker 1: Do you have a company though? Look at they paid bereavement. Yeah,
23:27
Speaker 1: they give her a half a day PTO right off
23:29
Speaker 1: the bat.
23:30
Speaker 4: What happens if your papa actually dies?
23:32
Speaker 1: Though?
23:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's really what do.
23:34
Speaker 1: You do then you have? Well I haven't, you know,
23:38
Speaker 1: I don't know. It's it's it's crazy when people do that,
23:42
Speaker 1: and they do it to get time off. But it's crazy.
23:47
Speaker 1: I don't know. But what I what I liked about
23:49
Speaker 1: that story was how good the you know, the company was. Yeah,
23:55
Speaker 1: it was like they're sending all these signals that they're
23:58
Speaker 1: a really good company. First their first thing was the show.
24:03
Speaker 1: That thing isn't to think bad. It's like be worried
24:05
Speaker 1: about her, like they must do like, yeah, this isn't
24:10
Speaker 1: their person. You know, they didn't think negative. They thought,
24:13
Speaker 1: oh no, something must be wrong, sent called the police
24:16
Speaker 1: into a wefair jack.
24:17
Speaker 4: I mean she was a benefits manager too, so yeah.
24:21
Speaker 1: So they were then they give her the time. Yeah,
24:24
Speaker 1: you know, wow, and then well she she turned around
24:29
Speaker 1: on them, and I'm sure that was a complete another
24:31
Speaker 1: shock because it sounds like a great culture. Yeah, so
24:37
Speaker 1: is that it?
24:38
Speaker 4: Yeah?
24:39
Speaker 1: Those were good. How we look on our on our
24:41
Speaker 1: submitted stories got a lot.
24:43
Speaker 3: I think next time we film, they're.
24:46
Speaker 1: All going to be submissions, is that right. It's kind
24:48
Speaker 1: of fun. It's been fun to watch this kind of Yeah.
24:50
Speaker 1: I mean we're like nineteen times into this. Yeah, it's
24:54
Speaker 1: been a little bit of a labor of love just
24:56
Speaker 1: to keep going when no one's paying attention. Yeah. And
24:59
Speaker 1: then but then people start paying attention, you know, and
25:02
Speaker 1: you start seeing you know, submitted stories. People reached out saying, hey,
25:07
Speaker 1: I'd like to tell a story beyond the show. You know,
25:10
Speaker 1: all that stacking up, you know, it would be Hopefully
25:14
Speaker 1: we'll soon be in a place where we can play
25:17
Speaker 1: clips of people telling their stories.
25:19
Speaker 4: We have lights in the queue right now.
25:21
Speaker 1: Yeah. And then also and still read a few people
25:25
Speaker 1: who don't just want to submit stories.
25:27
Speaker 4: Yeah.
25:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good fun because you know, we were you
25:30
Speaker 1: guys were doing a lot of internet research trying to
25:32
Speaker 1: find stories, and there's you know, everyone's got a story.
25:37
Speaker 1: I can't tell you the number of times people have
25:39
Speaker 1: said to me. I was talking to CEO the other
25:41
Speaker 1: day of another background screening company and he goes, yeah,
25:46
Speaker 1: everybody's got a story. I was like, oh, yeah, you're right.
25:49
Speaker 1: You know, everybody's been hiring he's got a story, and
25:51
Speaker 1: that we and he loved the idea of what we
25:53
Speaker 1: were doing, and he goes, I've gotten one I want,
25:57
Speaker 1: you know, And so I think he's gonna do a segment.
26:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't matter what industry you're into. Everybody has
26:03
Speaker 2: some sort of story. Like, yeah, it's all across the
26:06
Speaker 2: board where you've been about higher So yeah.
26:08
Speaker 1: So I've loved I love the traction we're getting and
26:13
Speaker 1: you know, the views we're getting not necessarily on the
26:17
Speaker 1: podcast itself. Yeah it's not like a podcast you call
26:20
Speaker 1: and listen to for like, you know, two three hours
26:23
Speaker 1: a day, like the news source, but we're using that
26:26
Speaker 1: to turn all these stories into clips, and you know,
26:30
Speaker 1: they're really getting a lot of traction online. So I
26:32
Speaker 1: love the idea of people enjoying the clips of the show.
26:34
Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of fun. Yeah all right, So,
26:38
Speaker 1: uh that's it for today. So thanks for listening to

Speaker 1: of those everybody's got a story stories and get on.
26:59
Speaker 1: You'll talk to Morgan, Emma or Nathan and they'll interview
27:03
Speaker 1: you and just do a segment for the show and
27:06
Speaker 1: you'll see it spin on here and we'll react to it.
27:08
Speaker 1: It could be super cool for you. Or you can
27:10
Speaker 1: just submit. When you don't want to do that, you
