- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning, happy Monday, if there is one. Headlines are
- 0:10Speaker 2: brought to you by Frostbrew Coors Light, as cold as
- 0:12Speaker 2: the Rockies. When the Seahawks turn the ball over, they lose.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That's just the truism. It happened again yesterday, and none
- 0:19Speaker 2: worse than this one. The ball is loose.
- 0:23Speaker 3: In the end zone.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Can the Tigers have it?
- 0:26Speaker 3: They do.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's a touchdown. Mason Hogan.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Holy cow.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Look, the ball came out of Helani. The ball is
- 0:35Speaker 4: just not secure ever. He had the ball out in
- 0:38Speaker 4: the flat earlier in the second quarter, dropped it around
- 0:40Speaker 4: with nobody, and he's carrying that ball like it's a walkthrough.
- 0:45Speaker 2: The ball's on his hip. It's never tight or secure.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Unbelievable.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Pretty indicting comments there by the Hall of Famer Tom
- 0:54Speaker 2: Brady with Kevin Burkhart on Fox Sports broadcast of Seahawks 49ers.
- 0:58Speaker 2: But then the Seahawks did get Jackson Smith and Jaguars
- 1:00Speaker 2: showing up as usual. I guess the ankle's okay. Oh,
- 1:18Speaker 2: my God. Cooper Cupp and Smith and.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Jigba working together.
- 1:22Speaker 2: They get a little bit of a rub here. The
- 1:26Speaker 2: corner has to play off.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Lenore, he's late in his coverage, and then they're a
- 1:32Speaker 4: tough defense to get a beat on.
- 1:35Speaker 2: You know who he beat on that after Lenore? He
- 1:37Speaker 2: beat Fred Warner. Just ran around him like he was
- 1:40Speaker 2: a traffic cone. Like the best guy. Seattle's All-Pro beat
- 1:43Speaker 2: San Francisco's All-Pro for that touchdown. But four turnovers, two
- 1:47Speaker 2: more interceptions by Sam Donald. He's got five in his
- 1:49Speaker 2: last three games. Two backup running backs dropping the ball,
- 1:53Speaker 2: including you heard Helani in the end zone. Three turnovers
- 1:56Speaker 2: in the first half handed the 49ers 21 points. Opponents, Jessamyn,
- 2:01Speaker 2: have scored 45 points off Seahawks turnovers the last three games.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Having been covering the Cougs lately, I can also relate.
- 2:09Speaker 2: That is why the Seahawks lost 32-29 to the undefeated 49ers.
- 2:13Speaker 2: There's Mike Evans and his broken rib torching Josh Jobe repeatedly.
- 2:16Speaker 2: There's not trusting those backup running backs as the offensive
- 2:18Speaker 2: line get them all at key times. But the fact
- 2:21Speaker 2: remains with this defense that the Seahawks offense doesn't turn the.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Ball over, they win.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Short week, Seahawks at Denver Thursday night, a matchup of
- 2:28Speaker 2: two 3-2 teams. Broncos beat the winless Chargers yesterday. Struggled
- 2:31Speaker 2: somewhat to do it. In the NFC West, the Cardinals
- 2:34Speaker 2: got smashed at home by Detroit, just like we said
- 2:36Speaker 2: they would. Another win for us on Factor Fiction. Let's go!
- 2:39Speaker 2: You were 2-0 this week, weren't you?
- 2:41Speaker 6: I think so.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So we're 4-1 this week. Again, bottom line is, $ 11. 35,
- 2:45Speaker 2: if you want to win $ 1, 000, just text FACT to 49451,
- 2:47Speaker 2: even before you know what this pick is. The Rams
- 2:51Speaker 2: tonight are going to host. They're 2-2. They host the
- 2:53Speaker 2: Bills at 3-1, 5-15 right here on KJR from Inglewood.
- 2:56Speaker 2: The Vikings are 5-0 because they beat the 1-4 Saints.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The Giants and Commanders tied when Washington unaware quarterback Jaden
- 3:03Speaker 2: Daniels just gave away the final 10 seconds of overtime
- 3:06Speaker 2: in D.C.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Oh, I fictioned that one. So I was 1-1. I'm
- 3:10Speaker 6: bad in a 500.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Oh, I thought you took the Giants on that one.
- 3:13Speaker 5: No, I didn't. I went with my heart, Greg.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Remember?
- 3:16Speaker 2: He kind of made fun of me.
- 3:18Speaker 5: No, I went with the Commanders.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, your buddies.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 6: Well, a lot of people were right because I got
- 3:24Speaker 6: below 50% fact on that one.
- 3:25Speaker 2: They know when they disagree.
- 3:27Speaker 5: You're welcome.
- 3:29Speaker 2: The Ravens beat the Falcons in overtime after Michael Penix Jr.
- 3:32Speaker 2: hurt his ribs getting sacked late in regulation. Tua Tagovaiola
- 3:35Speaker 2: comes in. He throws the game. clinching interception in overtime. Cracking, cracking, man.
- 3:39Speaker 2: They're 4-2. They won the first two games of a
- 3:42Speaker 2: five-game road trip. They won at Detroit on Friday. Yesterday,
- 3:45Speaker 2: they did this in Washington. Here's Montour, near side of neutral.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Sends it in for McCann, catching the pass.
- 3:54Speaker 7: McCann cuts, shoots, scores!
- 3:59Speaker 8: Sharon McCann down the right side, cut back into the middle.
- 4:03Speaker 2: He used the capital defender as a screen and a
- 4:07Speaker 2: twisted wrister.
- 4:09Speaker 8: In pass, Logan Thompson has Seattle back up by one,
- 4:13Speaker 8: 4-3 with 5.27 to play in the third.
- 4:17Speaker 2: The guttural ever fits you on the call here for
- 4:20Speaker 2: KJR yesterday. Kraken win 5-3 against the Alachovechkins. At 2-0
- 4:25Speaker 2: on the road, you're 4-2 overall to start the season.
- 4:28Speaker 2: The Kraken are playing the Flyers in Philadelphia tomorrow, 3.30 pregame,
- 4:30Speaker 2: 4 p.m. puck drop right here on 93.3 KJFM, your
- 4:34Speaker 2: home for the Kraken. The Washington Huskies lost their third
- 4:37Speaker 2: straight Big Ten game Friday night, smacked around early and
- 4:40Speaker 2: often across Husky Stadium by Iowa. And now there's what
- 4:44Speaker 2: former UW quarterback Hugh Millen said on our air this
- 4:46Speaker 2: morning about an hour ago. It was a, quote, full-blown
- 4:49Speaker 2: quarterback controversy after DeMond Williams left The game, not the program.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He tried to leave the program, but he came back.
- 4:55Speaker 2: He left the game Friday night. His replacement came in
- 4:58Speaker 2: and lit it up, trying to get the Huskies back
- 5:00Speaker 2: in anyway. They lost again. They're 3-4. Huskies have another
- 5:04Speaker 2: Friday night game this week at Purdue. Purdue just beat
- 5:07Speaker 2: the Minnesota team that beat UW. Not much better or
- 5:11Speaker 2: maybe worse for Jessamyn's Washington State Cougars. They lost a
- 5:14Speaker 2: 16-10 lead late in the game.
- 5:15Speaker 3: 17-16.
- 5:15Speaker 2: We were 16-3 at the half. Was it one touchdown
- 5:22Speaker 2: and three field goals?
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay.
- 5:25Speaker 2: So one touchdown for the Cougs offense and a loss
- 5:27Speaker 2: at previously one-win Utah State.
- 5:31Speaker 5: They came in with the same record.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I know. And now the Cougs are 1-5. I'm sorry
- 5:34Speaker 2: to report. Saturday, they play at the Beavs, Oregon State,
- 5:38Speaker 2: down in Corvallis. Oh, yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 5: And they're just, like, not that good.
- 5:41Speaker 2: They're rolling right now. They're crushing it.
- 5:43Speaker 3: They are.
- 5:43Speaker 5: DeMarcus Shepard has really got something going down there.
- 5:46Speaker 2: They do. The coach down there, the former UW assistant, he's...
- 5:48Speaker 2: They might win the Pac-12.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Also former... Washington State. One year with them.
- 5:53Speaker 2: That's right.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah, no, Joe Marcus has really got them cooking, and
- 5:56Speaker 5: he's got the cachet. He's got everything that he needs.
- 5:58Speaker 2: They might get a playoff berth win in the Pac-12.
- 6:00Speaker 5: I think they will.
- 6:01Speaker 2: The Sounders, they're rolling. Typical late-season surge for Coach Brian
- 6:05Speaker 2: Smetzer's guys. Now they're back healthy. 3-0 win at New
- 6:08Speaker 2: England on Saturday. The Sounders play Wednesday at Dallas. Major
- 6:12Speaker 2: League Baseball playoffs. The Guardian and Rays play Game 1
- 6:14Speaker 2: of the American League Champions Series tonight in St. Petersburg.
- 6:18Speaker 2: 5 p.m. first pitch last night. The Brewers ended a
- 6:21Speaker 2: seven-game postgame losing streak against the Dodgers. They beat L.A.
- 6:24Speaker 2: 2-1 in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Now they did it. Manufactured small ball run in the
- 6:30Speaker 2: fourth inning. And then four and two-thirds innings of scoreless.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Remember that?
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I do. It happens. It still happens in baseball.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Now on with the Monday show.
- 6:39Speaker 1: This is the Countdown to Monday Night Football with Greg Bell.
- 6:43Speaker 5: He's going to go into the open field.
- 6:46Speaker 1: As we count you down to tonight's game at 515.
- 6:49Speaker 1: He'll coast in for the touchdown. Brought to you by
- 6:53Speaker 1: Frostbrew Coors Light. Cold as the Rockies. On Sports Radio 93.3,
- 6:58Speaker 1: AJR FM.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Welcome back to the show from Monday, 10 a.m. to noon,
- 7:08Speaker 2: every weekday, 93.3 KJR FM. Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre
- 7:12Speaker 2: with you. And, yeah, the Seahawks, they at least can
- 7:18Speaker 2: take solace in we just got to clean up our
- 7:20Speaker 2: own stuff. Take care of ourselves. Don't worry about the opponent.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But we are going to talk during the show about
- 7:25Speaker 2: how Kyle Shanahan got Mike McDonald yesterday. We've been talking
- 7:29Speaker 2: all week about how, hey, has McDonald got Shanahan's number
- 7:32Speaker 2: and three points in Week 18 and holding the 49ers
- 7:35Speaker 2: to six points in the divisional playoff game up here. Well,
- 7:39Speaker 2: yesterday with the game on the line, actually, it was
- 7:41Speaker 2: the start and the end. I thought it was interesting
- 7:43Speaker 2: how Shanahan and the 49ers went away from Mike Evans
- 7:48Speaker 2: on Josh Jobe in the middle of the game. They
- 7:50Speaker 2: started off the game with that. The first third down
- 7:53Speaker 2: conversion after the Darnold interception. By the way, the first interception, again,
- 7:57Speaker 2: a third play of the game. I mean, the defensive back,
- 8:02Speaker 2: Renato Green, was standing between Darnold and Smith and Jigba,
- 8:05Speaker 2: squatting on that out route. I don't know how he
- 8:07Speaker 2: threw that pass, why he threw that pass. It was
- 8:09Speaker 2: almost like the Chargers game where he just threw it
- 8:11Speaker 2: out in the flat blindly, intercepted by the linebacker. But
- 8:14Speaker 2: this one, after the interception on the key third down
- 8:17Speaker 2: on the red zone, the 49ers go at Josh Dobe
- 8:21Speaker 2: with Mike Evans. Next play, two-yard line, touchdown. Mike Evans
- 8:24Speaker 2: on Josh Dobe. Game on the line yesterday. Let's go
- 8:27Speaker 2: Mike Evans on Josh Dobe. We talked to Mike McDonald
- 8:30Speaker 2: after the game about that. You're going to hear from
- 8:32Speaker 2: McDonald in other ways, too. We're going to hear what
- 8:37Speaker 2: he said with Brady Henderson of ESPN.com asking that question
- 8:41Speaker 2: of why was Josh Jobe continuing to stay on Mike Evans?
- 8:44Speaker 2: Mike Evans may be going to be in the Hall
- 8:47Speaker 2: of Fame, but he was playing with a broken rib
- 8:49Speaker 2: at 30-plus years old yesterday, and he torched Josh Jobe.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And Mike McDonald didn't have an answer for it. We're
- 8:56Speaker 2: going to talk about that. We're going to talk about
- 8:57Speaker 2: how Kyle Shanahan kept Mike Evans on Josh Jobe. And
- 9:02Speaker 2: McDonald flipped Jobe and Witherspoon during the first half. Early
- 9:07Speaker 2: in the game, Witherspoon was on the left side and
- 9:09Speaker 2: Jobe was on the right. And then they swapped.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Why do you think that happened? I'm just curious.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yesterday, I was going to get in the way, but
- 9:16Speaker 2: I'll tell you. Yesterday, remember we talked about, okay, Nicky
- 9:20Speaker 2: Maury's full go back. So here comes the dime defense
- 9:23Speaker 2: they played last year and shut the 49ers down with. Well,
- 9:26Speaker 2: Shanahan knew that too. So likely he was prepared for that.
- 9:30Speaker 2: So what did McDonald do yesterday? He did not go dime.
- 9:33Speaker 2: He went with Eamon Worry as basically the extra linebacker,
- 9:36Speaker 2: the Sam linebacker. And they call that nickel because they
- 9:40Speaker 2: have Eamon Warrior listed as a safety, but it's really
- 9:42Speaker 2: not nickel in how McDonald's play it.
- 9:44Speaker 3: I know.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Can you describe the vernacular just for the listening audience?
- 9:48Speaker 2: So nickel is fifth defensive back. You put five defensive
- 9:50Speaker 2: backs with it. Most teams, nickel is an extra corner.
- 9:53Speaker 2: The Seahawks, because the NFL and everybody recognizes Eamon Warrior
- 9:58Speaker 2: officially as a safety... they call a nickel when he's
- 10:01Speaker 2: on the field with two deep safeties and two corners.
- 10:03Speaker 2: But it's not. It's a hybrid linebacker. It's a big
- 10:07Speaker 2: nickel hybrid linebacker. Eamon Warrior is playing often at the
- 10:11Speaker 2: edge of the line of scrimmage or definitely on the
- 10:13Speaker 2: second level, but not the third. It's not a fifth
- 10:15Speaker 2: defensive back. But what McDonald did to win the Super
- 10:18Speaker 2: Bowl last year and lead the league in points allowed
- 10:20Speaker 2: is he had Imoire in the field, and then he
- 10:22Speaker 2: brought a third cornerback in. It was usually Reek Woolen
- 10:26Speaker 2: with Josh Jobe. And that move, they played outside, and
- 10:29Speaker 2: that moved Witherspoon inside, where we've talked so many times
- 10:32Speaker 2: that McDonald wants to play Witherspoon. And the league knows it,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and Shanahan knows it. So yesterday the changeup was they
- 10:39Speaker 2: kept Witherspoon outside. They didn't go dime and they didn't
- 10:42Speaker 2: move Witherspoon into the nickel spot that McDonald would rather
- 10:45Speaker 2: play him in because he knew Shanahan would have prepared
- 10:47Speaker 2: for that.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:48Speaker 5: This is chess on another level.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I feel a little bit like Hugh Millen here, but
- 10:51Speaker 2: it's not.
- 10:53Speaker 5: It's always great to be Hugh Millen.
- 10:55Speaker 2: In some ways. I'm kidding you. You know that. You
- 10:58Speaker 2: and I get along great. I appreciate your respect. I
- 11:01Speaker 2: had some Joshy there. I saw him. He was at
- 11:04Speaker 2: the game yesterday and we talked about that. But McDonald.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So he didn't want to play Witherspoon inside that much.
- 11:11Speaker 2: The extra corners, Nehemiah Pritchett, we saw the interception, but
- 11:15Speaker 2: he only played four snaps. And Trevon Diggs, who was
- 11:18Speaker 2: signed to the active roster, made it sound like, oh, okay,
- 11:21Speaker 2: he's probably going to play a lot. He only played
- 11:22Speaker 2: nine snaps or eight snaps. So that's 12 snaps of
- 11:26Speaker 2: the 60 on defense. 20% of the time they were
- 11:29Speaker 2: in extra corner, which means Witherspoon was staying outside because
- 11:33Speaker 2: they didn't have a third cornerback to push him inside.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Got it? Well, Witherspoon was starting the game on the
- 11:40Speaker 2: left corner side, and then they went to the right side.
- 11:43Speaker 2: They flipped over with Jobe. What did Shanahan do? He
- 11:47Speaker 2: flipped Mike Evans with him, and he went to Josh
- 11:50Speaker 2: Jobe's side again. And McDonald never countered that counter. He
- 11:54Speaker 2: stayed with Jobe the whole time. He didn't move Witherspoon
- 11:57Speaker 2: on to Evans.
- 11:58Speaker 5: How many times can you flip, though, throughout a game?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Well, you really could.
- 12:03Speaker 5: You could.
- 12:03Speaker 2: You could do it.
- 12:04Speaker 5: With that mess up your guys.
- 12:07Speaker 2: McDonald does not want to do that. He is really
- 12:09Speaker 2: big on having the defense dictate to the offense. So
- 12:13Speaker 2: he was not going to let Shanahan dictate to him
- 12:16Speaker 2: what side of the field Witherspoon played on. So he didn't.
- 12:19Speaker 2: That's one reason. Another reason is he wanted to free
- 12:22Speaker 2: Witherspoon up to do other things. Blitz or come up
- 12:25Speaker 2: the edge or what have you. Run support. He didn't
- 12:28Speaker 2: want him... I'm going to say this and you're going
- 12:30Speaker 2: to listen and you're listening. Well, what do you mean?
- 12:33Speaker 2: He didn't want to devote Witherspoon to Evans for the
- 12:36Speaker 2: fear that then Evans would take Witherspoon out of the
- 12:38Speaker 2: game for all the plays. He didn't get targets for
- 12:40Speaker 2: as great as Evans was. He still only had 10 targets,
- 12:44Speaker 2: seven catches. So that's 50 other offensive plays, right? So
- 12:48Speaker 2: McDonald didn't want to take Witherspoon out of the game
- 12:51Speaker 2: by just pinning him on Evans when Evans wasn't going
- 12:54Speaker 2: to get the ball on every single snap. You follow
- 12:56Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Yeah, I do. So they wanted to
- 12:57Speaker 2: keep Witherspoon available to do everything else that he's so
- 13:00Speaker 2: good at.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Sure.
- 13:01Speaker 2: But the difference was he didn't play inside at nickel.
- 13:04Speaker 2: So he was not in the middle of the field
- 13:06Speaker 2: as often to make tackles on run support and affect
- 13:08Speaker 2: the game in blitzing from a shorter route and all
- 13:10Speaker 2: those things that he usually does, all because McDonald was
- 13:13Speaker 2: trying to give a change up to Shanahan and play
- 13:17Speaker 2: Less dime, less essential nickel, and keep Witherspoon outside. Shanahan
- 13:22Speaker 2: beat him. Shanahan beat him by keeping Evans on Jobe.
- 13:26Speaker 2: And when the game was on the line, that's how
- 13:28Speaker 2: the 49ers won. And Jobe had no answer for him.
- 13:32Speaker 2: After the break, we're going to dig out the quote
- 13:34Speaker 2: of Mike McDonald talking about answering the question from Brady
- 13:38Speaker 2: Henderson of UH Penn.com. Why didn't you change up the
- 13:40Speaker 2: coverage on Evans when it was clear that Jobe was
- 13:43Speaker 2: having a hard time? He did not like that question.
- 13:46Speaker 2: He's not used to getting that in this market. He's
- 13:48Speaker 2: a Super Bowl champion coach who's had a number one defense. And, yeah,
- 13:53Speaker 2: we'll hear his answer. It actually was the mic drop
- 13:56Speaker 2: end of the press conference. We got an anything else,
- 13:58Speaker 2: and it was over after that question.
- 14:00Speaker 6: I mean, I think everyone who's been listening and following
- 14:02Speaker 6: the Seahawks and listens to SportsHearts Radio knows that that's
- 14:06Speaker 6: the end of a press conference by now. Yep.
- 14:08Speaker 5: I mean, we all do.
- 14:09Speaker 2: It's a rhetorical question.
- 14:11Speaker 5: As in, this is over. It's a nice courtesy to
- 14:15Speaker 5: actually ask, but bye.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It is.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Has anyone ever gone beyond when there isn't anything else?
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yes, I have a couple times.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Because I feel like I've heard that before.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I have a couple times. Oh, one more. And then
- 14:26Speaker 2: they stare. Both the coach and the vice president of
- 14:29Speaker 2: communications don't like that because they wanted it to be over.
- 14:32Speaker 2: But literally, you did offer if there are any more questions.
- 14:35Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Maybe he should not be as kind.
- 14:38Speaker 2: We'll talk about why. I was in the locker room yesterday,
- 14:40Speaker 2: and we'll talk about why they weren't running around and
- 14:42Speaker 2: they're throwing tables and thinking the sky is falling. There's
- 14:45Speaker 2: a reason for that. One of them is that they're
- 14:47Speaker 2: defending Super Bowl champions. Another is it's only October the 11th.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Personal story. on how the world of sports journalism continues
- 14:55Speaker 2: to crash and burn. We're going to talk about that.
- 14:58Speaker 2: At 11 o'clock, a really special guest. I mean, really
- 15:01Speaker 2: special guest. Coach Bobby McIntyre, longtime college assistant defensive coordinator,
- 15:05Speaker 2: linebackers coach. Somebody he knows really well. Put him on
- 15:09Speaker 2: an assignment yesterday to break down the Seahawks 49ers game.
- 15:12Speaker 2: He watched it live. He broke down the tape of it.
- 15:15Speaker 5: He was so excited. He's like, I've got to get
- 15:17Speaker 5: it on YouTube so I can rewind it.
- 15:19Speaker 2: That is Jessamyn McIntyre's dad.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:21Speaker 2: He's going to be on the air live from Long Island,
- 15:24Speaker 2: former coach at Hofstra, Bryant, a long time.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Stony Brook.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Stony Brook. He's going to be on live to break
- 15:31Speaker 2: down the Seahawks 49ers game for us. And I'm going
- 15:34Speaker 2: to just turn the comms over to his daughter and
- 15:36Speaker 2: let them roll with it. I'll chime in a couple times.
- 15:39Speaker 6: You want to hear some Irish people fight with each other?
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yes, we do.
- 15:41Speaker 5: All right, 11 o'clock.
- 15:43Speaker 2: We had him on the air at an Army-Navy game
- 15:44Speaker 2: in Washington a couple years ago, and it was fantastic.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Well, yeah, he bombed into the Dan Quinn interview.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he did. It was awesome. At 1130, we'll read
- 15:52Speaker 2: back your texts and talkbacks. The talkbacks are on the
- 15:55Speaker 2: 933KGR. com website, which, by the way, I'm going to start
- 15:58Speaker 2: writing to. More on that later. But my stories and
- 16:02Speaker 2: videos you're used to seeing at TheNewsTribune.com, don't go to
- 16:04Speaker 2: that anymore. There's no reason to because they folded up
- 16:07Speaker 2: their sports department.
- 16:07Speaker 5: I canceled.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Thank you. Appreciate that.
- 16:10Speaker 5: You're welcome.
- 16:10Speaker 2: 40 years, or I should say 21 years with McClatchy,
- 16:14Speaker 2: and they laid me off yesterday. We'll talk about that
- 16:17Speaker 2: and what sports journalism is going to. The sports department
- 16:19Speaker 2: for The News Tribune has gone dead. The legacy of
- 16:22Speaker 2: John Clayton and Dave Bowling and Mike Sandoe and John
- 16:26Speaker 2: McGrath and Manny Hatz-Miles.
- 16:29Speaker 5: And Greg Bell.
- 16:30Speaker 2: No, not Greg Bell. I was carrying everybody else's luggage
- 16:34Speaker 2: for the last 12 years.
- 16:34Speaker 5: You've been fantastic.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I appreciate that. But, yeah, the News Tribune Sports Department
- 16:38Speaker 2: is disintegrated to zero. Well, John Manley is going to
- 16:42Speaker 2: carry the load in high school sports. But nothing covering
- 16:45Speaker 2: the Seahawks anymore, nor the Mariners, nor the Kraken, nor
- 16:48Speaker 2: the Huskies.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Well, now you can do it for us.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm going to do. Exactly. 933KJR. com.
- 16:54Speaker 5: All right. Look at that sunny side of the street.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Starting Thursday, I'll be in Denver covering for KJR.
- 17:00Speaker 5: And I love that selfishly.
- 17:03Speaker 2: We'll read back your text. Thank you. We'll read back
- 17:05Speaker 2: your text at 49451 on the Tacoma Dutch text line
- 17:08Speaker 2: at 1130. 1135 Factor Friction brought to you by the
- 17:12Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Again, if you want to
- 17:15Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000, text FACT. Just set your alarm for 1135,
- 17:18Speaker 2: then text FACT to 49451, and you're good to go.
- 17:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 2: That's basically how it works on this show.
- 17:22Speaker 5: It's Greg's pick today, and he was, what, you were 2-1.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I was 2-1 because of the Georgia-Alabama game. Army and
- 17:29Speaker 2: the under worked like a charm. 20-17, one on the
- 17:32Speaker 2: final play, beating Tulane for the under. And I told
- 17:37Speaker 2: you that the Lions were going to boat race Arizona,
- 17:39Speaker 2: and they did.
- 17:39Speaker 5: You were correct.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Five and a half, and they won by 17. But
- 17:43Speaker 2: the damn Georgia-Alabama game, I thought that was going to
- 17:45Speaker 2: be a track meet, and it ended up being a
- 17:47Speaker 2: lower scoring than 55 points. And you saw the Kalen
- 17:50Speaker 2: DeBoer meltdown at the end of the game. Sure did.
- 17:54Speaker 2: He's got a flush, pale complexion anyway, but he was
- 17:58Speaker 2: as red as his Alabama cap at that non-interference call
- 18:02Speaker 2: in the end zone. when his receiver got trucked by
- 18:04Speaker 2: the Georgia defense.
- 18:05Speaker 5: Yeah, that was a bad non-call.
- 18:07Speaker 6: I mean, there's some where you're like, let them play,
- 18:09Speaker 6: but that was terrible.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 6: And I'm not an Alabama fan. I'm not a Georgia fan.
- 18:15Speaker 6: I'm just saying that was a bad non-call.
- 18:17Speaker 2: 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line. The first thing
- 18:21Speaker 2: I have to ask, what are you concerned about with
- 18:23Speaker 2: the Seahawks? Most. There are multiple issues. They're only three
- 18:27Speaker 2: and two, and it's only October the 12th. They were
- 18:30Speaker 2: three and two last year. You know what happened after that.
- 18:33Speaker 2: They went on an absolute tear. They only lost one
- 18:35Speaker 2: game of the final four and a half months of
- 18:37Speaker 2: the season, and they won the Super Bowl. Do you
- 18:40Speaker 2: know this? Under Mike McDonald in three seasons, when the
- 18:43Speaker 2: Seahawks turn the ball over two or more times, their
- 18:46Speaker 2: record is nine wins against ten losses. When they turn
- 18:49Speaker 2: the ball over once or zero times, you know what
- 18:51Speaker 2: their record is?
- 18:52Speaker 3: 21-1. Wow.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Now, turnovers in football are such a huge factor anyway,
- 19:00Speaker 2: but for this team in particular, because of how good
- 19:02Speaker 2: their defense is, I mean, they gave up 11 points
- 19:06Speaker 2: on defense basically yesterday because the other 21 points were
- 19:09Speaker 2: handed to them in their own territory. In fact, once
- 19:12Speaker 2: in their own end zone, were handed to the 49ers.
- 19:14Speaker 2: So the 49ers scoring drives in the first half for
- 19:17Speaker 2: a 21-13 halftime lead, 18 yards, 10 yards, zero yards.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Fumble in your own end zone touchdown. And that's the
- 19:28Speaker 2: difference in the game. They lost 32-29. They only gave
- 19:30Speaker 2: up 11 points on defense. You give up 11 points
- 19:33Speaker 2: to an undefeated team, you should win that game. And
- 19:36Speaker 2: they did not because of their turnovers. They don't trust
- 19:39Speaker 2: their running backs. We're going to talk about when is
- 19:43Speaker 2: Zach Charbonnet coming back? When is Jadarian Price coming back?
- 19:48Speaker 2: What happened to Robert Henry Jr., who got signed to
- 19:50Speaker 2: the active roster and wasn't even active yesterday? We'll talk
- 19:53Speaker 2: about the running back situation next. That would be my
- 19:56Speaker 2: answer to the Tacoma Dodge text on what I'm worried
- 19:58Speaker 2: about if I was a Seahawks fan right now. We'll
- 20:00Speaker 2: talk about that running back situation. When's Zach Charbonnet going
- 20:02Speaker 2: to play? Is it going to be Thursday night in Denver?
- 20:04Speaker 2: That's next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Now back to Countdown to Monday Night.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Football with Greg Bell.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Cold as the Rockies.
- 20:34Speaker 1: On Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Welcome back to the show. The day after the Seahawks
- 20:47Speaker 2: lose for the second time in three games. 32-29 to
- 20:52Speaker 2: the San Francisco 49ers who are now 5-0 in a
- 20:54Speaker 2: two-game lead. in the NFC West after five weeks. Seahawks,
- 20:58Speaker 2: short week. They're working today. I'll be running from here
- 21:01Speaker 2: down to Seahawks headquarters in Renton, reporting for 933KGR. com and
- 21:07Speaker 2: what Mike McDonald says day after they play the Denver Broncos,
- 21:10Speaker 2: who are also 3-2 on Thursday night in Denver. The
- 21:13Speaker 2: question I asked at the start of the show, 49451
- 21:15Speaker 2: on the Tacoma Dodge text line, what are you concerned
- 21:18Speaker 2: about most with the Seahawks? A lot of you writing
- 21:20Speaker 2: in about Sam Darnold. Five interceptions in the last three games.
- 21:25Speaker 2: He led the NFL in turnovers last year with 20.
- 21:28Speaker 2: It is not just a coincidence that when he did
- 21:30Speaker 2: not turn the ball over over consecutive games from Week
- 21:34Speaker 2: 18 on the end last season, the Seahawks won the
- 21:37Speaker 2: NFC West, won the No. 1 seed, and won the
- 21:39Speaker 2: Super Bowl when he went four games in a row
- 21:42Speaker 2: without a turnover. A lot of you are putting on
- 21:46Speaker 2: the text line, your biggest concern is the running back situation.
- 21:50Speaker 2: You heard Tom Brady at the top of the show
- 21:53Speaker 2: just say, excoriating him going after George Ohlone for his
- 21:56Speaker 2: casual holding of the football.
- 21:58Speaker 6: I mean, it was not incorrect, though.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Coach Mack is going to join us at 11 o'clock
- 22:05Speaker 2: to talk about that. All right, so what's the situation
- 22:09Speaker 2: at running back? Well, we know Jadarian Price is on
- 22:11Speaker 2: the injured reserve list. He has to be out at
- 22:14Speaker 2: least until the November 2nd game against Chicago, the Monday
- 22:17Speaker 2: night game. So it's still going to be three more
- 22:20Speaker 2: weeks at least before he can play. The Seahawks play
- 22:22Speaker 2: Denver Thursday night. Then they have 10 days off before
- 22:25Speaker 2: they play the Chiefs on a Sunday night game. And
- 22:27Speaker 2: then the game after that is November 2nd against Chicago.
- 22:31Speaker 2: That's the one that Price could first come back for.
- 22:34Speaker 2: He's got an upper rib injury, according to the general manager,
- 22:37Speaker 2: John Schneider. So he's out for at least into November.
- 22:40Speaker 2: What about Zach Charbonnet? He's on the physically unable to
- 22:43Speaker 2: perform list. He has returned to practice. He finished his
- 22:46Speaker 2: second week of practice yesterday. or excuse me, last week,
- 22:50Speaker 2: going into his third or so week. October 22nd is
- 22:53Speaker 2: the day the Seahawks have to decide whether he's ready
- 22:56Speaker 2: to go and activate him to the active roster or
- 22:59Speaker 2: put him on the physically unable to perform list for
- 23:01Speaker 2: the remainder of the season he's out for the year.
- 23:03Speaker 2: All signs are that they will activate him on or
- 23:05Speaker 2: before October 22nd, which could put him in line to play.
- 23:10Speaker 2: That would be three days before they play the Chiefs
- 23:14Speaker 2: in Seattle, that would be the Kenneth Walker return match.
- 23:17Speaker 2: You remember him, the guy who didn't fumble in four
- 23:19Speaker 2: years when he was the starting tailback?
- 23:21Speaker 5: Yeah, we do remember that.
- 23:22Speaker 2: He leads the NFL in rushing.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Memories.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Leads the NFL in yards per carry.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Light the corners of my mind.
- 23:29Speaker 2: He's averaging 6.9 yards per carry and 134 yards a game.
- 23:32Speaker 2: He's as promised. 134 yards a game.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I put that out on Twitter during the game yesterday,
- 23:39Speaker 2: and a lot of Seahawks fans did not appreciate me
- 23:41Speaker 2: reminding them that Kenneth Walker never fumbled. Never lost a
- 23:44Speaker 2: fumble in four years.
- 23:46Speaker 6: I mean, I wouldn't, I'm not saying that George Lonnie
- 23:48Speaker 6: should be compared to Kenneth Walker in any way, but
- 23:52Speaker 6: I have not seen a professional running back have that
- 23:57Speaker 6: kind of lack of ball security is what I could say.
- 24:00Speaker 2: He's beyond his scope of his duties here. He's a
- 24:03Speaker 2: special teams player who is good on third down and
- 24:06Speaker 2: pass blocking and sometimes pass kitchen.
- 24:07Speaker 5: I'm not blaming him for lack of experience.
- 24:10Speaker 2: I'm just saying he's miscast in a running back room
- 24:12Speaker 2: that is on threads now.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Okay.
- 24:15Speaker 2: When's Charbonnet coming back? We asked Mike McDonald that question
- 24:18Speaker 2: post game yesterday.
- 24:22Speaker 3: As of right now, I don't, the plan right now
- 24:26Speaker 3: isn't for sure for him to play.
- 24:27Speaker 5: So that could change, but as of right now, he's
- 24:29Speaker 5: not going to play.
- 24:31Speaker 2: I don't know what the first part of that answer was.
- 24:33Speaker 2: The second part is the pertinent one that as of
- 24:35Speaker 2: right now, he's not going to play Thursday night. So
- 24:39Speaker 2: what's that leave him with? It was mostly what you
- 24:42Speaker 2: saw yesterday. Emmanuel Wilson, 20 carries, 61 yards in the fumble.
- 24:46Speaker 2: When he allowed Fred Warner to punch the ball out,
- 24:49Speaker 2: I talked to him in the locker room after the game,
- 24:50Speaker 2: and Wilson said, I got to run with tighter hold
- 24:54Speaker 2: on the ball and keeping my legs moving. He said
- 24:57Speaker 2: that keeping your legs moving and forward momentum helps keep
- 24:59Speaker 2: a defender from punching the ball out, and boy, did
- 25:02Speaker 2: Warner do that expertly yesterday. He also said what I
- 25:05Speaker 2: thought was interesting, Jessamyn, as in why aren't they already
- 25:09Speaker 2: doing this? He said that he was going to talk
- 25:11Speaker 2: to the scout team defensive players in practice this week,
- 25:14Speaker 2: Emanuel Wilson said, and he's going to ask them to
- 25:16Speaker 2: punch at the football while he's running it in practice.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Shouldn't they already have been doing that? Well, apparently not
- 25:24Speaker 2: because Emanuel Wilson said he's going to ask them to
- 25:26Speaker 2: do that. I thought that was an interesting comment, but
- 25:30Speaker 2: that's what the week is ahead for Emanuel Wilson or
- 25:34Speaker 2: so he says. We know about Helani, and we've already
- 25:38Speaker 2: talked about him being miscast and being used beyond the
- 25:40Speaker 2: scope of what they meant to. Velas Jones Jr. was
- 25:42Speaker 2: active for the game yesterday. He played as many snaps
- 25:46Speaker 2: on offense as you and I did, Jessamyn, as you
- 25:49Speaker 2: did driving around Seattle right now. Zero on the strength.
- 25:52Speaker 5: I'd like that paycheck.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Zero on the strength, as I'll be sure used to say.
- 25:56Speaker 2: For those of you who know, I'll be sure out there.
- 25:58Speaker 2: One of my guys in high school and college.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Zero.
- 26:02Speaker 2: It really surprised me. How much do they not trust
- 26:05Speaker 2: Velas Jones Jr.? I know he's just up from the
- 26:07Speaker 2: practice squad, but after what we were seeing yesterday, maybe
- 26:11Speaker 2: some of those carries that Helani was getting to Jones?
- 26:14Speaker 2: And what about Robert Henry Jr.? They used an active
- 26:17Speaker 2: roster spot to sign him off the commander's practice squad
- 26:20Speaker 2: last week, and he didn't play at all. He wasn't
- 26:23Speaker 2: even active. I thought for sure he was going to
- 26:24Speaker 2: be active given the running back situation. Give him a
- 26:26Speaker 2: handful of plays and say, this is your package. You'll
- 26:29Speaker 2: come in when we call these plays. Wasn't even active.
- 26:33Speaker 2: So do we see Robert Henry Jr.
- 26:35Speaker 3: This week?
- 26:35Speaker 2: I think that's a fair question that I'm going to
- 26:37Speaker 2: try to ask. Why was he not active yesterday? Was
- 26:40Speaker 2: he not spun up on the game plan? He was
- 26:42Speaker 2: certainly football ready. He's been practicing since the end of
- 26:44Speaker 2: July in training camp with the commanders every day. So
- 26:47Speaker 2: apparently he didn't know enough of the game plan to
- 26:49Speaker 2: make the coaches trust him either. You see my point.
- 26:52Speaker 2: The story I wrote as a side story yesterday after
- 26:54Speaker 2: my game story was about not trusting running backs and
- 26:57Speaker 2: the trickle-down effect. The trickle-down effect is you're relying on
- 27:00Speaker 2: a quarterback to beat a defense who knows you can't
- 27:03Speaker 2: run and knows you won't run in key situations, and
- 27:06Speaker 2: that puts a pass rush that gives them far more
- 27:09Speaker 2: lethality on the pass rush if they know they don't
- 27:11Speaker 2: have to honor the run.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Like you were saying, Kyle Shanahan read the room.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Exactly. So Sam Darnold, the way to help a quarterback
- 27:19Speaker 2: who's thrown five interceptions the last three games is to
- 27:21Speaker 2: have a running game, and the Seahawks have running backs
- 27:23Speaker 2: they don't trust. Bottom line. And we can revisit this
- 27:28Speaker 2: because I think this is going to be a story
- 27:29Speaker 2: the entire season. But that philosophical decision to not pay
- 27:33Speaker 2: a running back $ 14 million a year is biting them.
- 27:36Speaker 2: That has not aged well. You cannot argue that fact.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I was talking to Michael Sean Dugar yesterday. He came out.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Now he's an enterprise writer for The Athlete or whatever
- 27:45Speaker 2: the heck the title he has. He's not on the
- 27:47Speaker 2: beat every day, but we were talking about that. And
- 27:48Speaker 2: he said, man, that choice hasn't aged very well. Not
- 27:52Speaker 2: so far. And I know the Seahawks don't want to
- 27:55Speaker 2: hear it, but that's what a lot of you are
- 27:57Speaker 2: thinking about. They could have afforded both Rashid Shahid to
- 28:01Speaker 2: re-sign at $ 17 million and re-sign Kenneth Walker, but they
- 28:04Speaker 2: made a value assessment at the running back position that
- 28:06Speaker 2: they are not going to pay that money for the
- 28:08Speaker 2: sport's most injured position to a guy who did not
- 28:11Speaker 2: complete a full season until they had a job share
- 28:13Speaker 2: with him last year at 45% of the snaps with Charbonnet.
- 28:17Speaker 2: So they didn't. And they drafted one instead. The guy
- 28:19Speaker 2: they drafted fumbled, fumbled, and then got hurt, and he's
- 28:22Speaker 2: on the injured reserve list. That's Dardane Price's season so far.
- 28:26Speaker 2: That's where they are at running back.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Where do you think the fumbling issues come from?
- 28:30Speaker 6: Because I don't know if I want to look at
- 28:32Speaker 6: position coaches or not, but this is not something that
- 28:35Speaker 6: we've typically seen from the Seahawks running back core.
- 28:38Speaker 2: I believe, Jessamyn, that running backs in college get by
- 28:43Speaker 2: on skill. And in college, they're great players, of course.
- 28:46Speaker 2: They're the best of their high school. But you can
- 28:48Speaker 2: get by on skill, and you can get by on speed.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 28:51Speaker 2: They don't have Fred Warner in college football taking a
- 28:54Speaker 2: right hand, a Marvin Hagler right hand to the ball
- 28:56Speaker 2: as he's tackling you. They just don't.
- 28:58Speaker 5: But Helani fumbled with no one around him.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Correct.
- 29:00Speaker 5: So that's what I'm wondering.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Correct. He dropped a pass after he caught it. He
- 29:05Speaker 2: would have probably not gotten in the end zone, but
- 29:07Speaker 2: he would have at least gotten five or ten more yards.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 29:10Speaker 2: And he had to go back and pick up the
- 29:11Speaker 2: ball just past the line to gain. And it ended
- 29:14Speaker 2: up— did they settle for a field goal that drive? I
- 29:16Speaker 2: can't remember, which I think they may have.
- 29:18Speaker 5: That sounds right.
- 29:19Speaker 2: But yeah, they did, actually. And I remember noting at
- 29:22Speaker 2: the time that if Helani had gotten 10 more yards,
- 29:25Speaker 2: they had a better chance at a touchdown.
- 29:26Speaker 5: Fresh set of downs.
- 29:28Speaker 2: They did get the first down on that play, but
- 29:29Speaker 2: he had 10 yards of open space and he dropped
- 29:31Speaker 2: the ball in the clear. And then we saw what
- 29:34Speaker 2: happened in the end zone. Now, I want to say again,
- 29:36Speaker 2: I think I said it during the headlines, but.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Jalen.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Sundell got beat on that play right at the snap.
- 29:42Speaker 2: He got slanted into, and the center got blown back
- 29:45Speaker 2: into that exchange, the handoff exchange between Darnold and Helani.
- 29:49Speaker 2: There's not supposed to be a defensive tackle and center
- 29:52Speaker 2: at the mesh point of a handoff in the end zone.
- 29:54Speaker 2: That's not supposed to happen. Okay, let's talk about the
- 29:57Speaker 2: decision that that even occurred. The 49ers had the ball
- 30:01Speaker 2: stacked up back near midfield after a couple penalties in
- 30:05Speaker 2: the final minute of the first half. And Mike McDonald,
- 30:07Speaker 2: it was a 14-13 game. Mike McDonald chose to use
- 30:11Speaker 2: his timeouts on defense, as he often has in his
- 30:13Speaker 2: tenure here, so he could save time for his offense
- 30:16Speaker 2: to steal a score. He was trying to do the
- 30:19Speaker 2: old two-for-one because the Seahawks were going to receive the
- 30:22Speaker 2: second-half kickoff having won the opening coin toss and deferred.
- 30:25Speaker 2: So he was trying to get two chances to score
- 30:28Speaker 2: without the 49ers and Brock Purdy touching the ball, which
- 30:30Speaker 2: would swing the game when you're down by a point, right? Okay,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but now field position was working against Seattle. He was
- 30:37Speaker 2: counting on a punt into the end zone. The 49ers
- 30:40Speaker 2: punted from their own 42, eschewing a 60-yard field goal
- 30:46Speaker 2: into the open end. Shanahan didn't want to miss that
- 30:48Speaker 2: field goal and then give the Seahawks a 42-yard line
- 30:51Speaker 2: drive start, so he punted. McDonald was hoping for a
- 30:55Speaker 2: fair— he even said after the game, we were hoping for
- 30:57Speaker 2: a touchback and a drive start to 20 and get
- 30:59Speaker 2: a couple completions with 18 seconds left. We're in business.
- 31:03Speaker 2: We can possibly get a long field goal try. Well,
- 31:05Speaker 2: the 49ers punt down the ball at the 4. The
- 31:10Speaker 2: former Steelers punter for the 49ers got the ball dead
- 31:12Speaker 2: at the 4. It was a great punt.
- 31:13Speaker 5: That was a bomb-ass punt.
- 31:15Speaker 3: It was.
- 31:15Speaker 2: It was Michael Dixon-esque. So then the Seahawks drive start
- 31:18Speaker 2: is at the four, and you have 18 seconds left.
- 31:20Speaker 2: The 49ers have all three of their timeouts remaining. So
- 31:24Speaker 2: Josh Dubow, the Associated Press, and I were sitting next
- 31:26Speaker 2: to each other at the press box saying, I take
- 31:29Speaker 2: a knee here. Uh-huh.
- 31:32Speaker 5: Were they backed up enough where they couldn't?
- 31:34Speaker 2: No, he could.
- 31:34Speaker 5: He could have.
- 31:35Speaker 2: You could have taken a direct snap and gone straight.
- 31:36Speaker 2: And they were in the four-yard line.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:38Speaker 2: You had four yards before the goal line.
- 31:39Speaker 5: I'm just trying to do the math in my head, yes.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Now, and I said to Josh— Just like under center, Neal.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 2: I said to Josh, well, if you take a knee here,
- 31:47Speaker 2: the 49ers are going to take three timeouts and force
- 31:49Speaker 2: you to punt from your own end zone. But we
- 31:51Speaker 2: were guessing that there might have been 10, 12, 8
- 31:54Speaker 2: seconds left on the clock by then. Chances are, if
- 31:57Speaker 2: Dixon does his job and gets the punt off out
- 31:59Speaker 2: of your own end zone, most, if not all, of
- 32:02Speaker 2: that time remaining in the half is going to elapse
- 32:04Speaker 2: on the punt. You know how high he kicks the ball.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 32:07Speaker 2: He probably would try to kick the highest punt of
- 32:09Speaker 2: the season to try to elapse all that time.
- 32:10Speaker 3: For sure.
- 32:11Speaker 2: And even if the 49ers field that punt, there might
- 32:13Speaker 2: be a second or two. And depending on how far
- 32:15Speaker 2: the punt is, you might have a 60-yard field goal.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Follow me? So that's why I thought they were going
- 32:20Speaker 2: to take an E there. Instead, McDonald runs offense. And
- 32:25Speaker 2: he said after the game, we're always trying to stay aggressive.
- 32:29Speaker 2: We were hoping that maybe one run would pop there
- 32:32Speaker 2: and we could rush up to the line and get
- 32:33Speaker 2: a playoff. But there are only 18 seconds and you're
- 32:35Speaker 2: on the own four-yard line. Running offense there cost him
- 32:39Speaker 2: a touchdown. It cost him seven points. And instead of
- 32:41Speaker 2: a 14-13 game, it was 21-13. Yeah. McDonald's quote was,
- 32:49Speaker 2: we have to be able to execute the run game
- 32:51Speaker 2: and hold on to the football there.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 2: That's what he said. He, again, trusted his running back
- 32:58Speaker 2: and quarterback to execute a handoff in his own end zone.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And they did not. Partly because Jalen Sandell got blown up.
- 33:05Speaker 2: What we're dealing with is in the weeds are the
- 33:08Speaker 2: details of a loss. And in the NFL, this is
- 33:10Speaker 2: the difference between winning and losing. These kind of things. Details.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Not taking a knee, not having the right mesh point,
- 33:16Speaker 2: your center getting blown up on a handoff out of
- 33:18Speaker 2: your own end zone, touchdown 49ers. And instead of being
- 33:21Speaker 2: down by one, you're down by eight, and you're chasing
- 33:24Speaker 2: the rest of the second half. That was definitely a choice,
- 33:29Speaker 2: the way they handled that. Greg Papa, the longtime broadcast host,
- 33:34Speaker 2: Radio play-by-play guy, the 49ers. He's had huge health problems lately, infections, cancer.
- 33:41Speaker 2: He's trying to be— it' s been bad. Well, he texted me.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Right after that sequence, he texted me from, for all
- 33:48Speaker 2: I know, his ICU unit. He's been in the Bay Area.
- 33:51Speaker 2: He texted me and said, what's McDonald doing? Why is
- 33:55Speaker 2: he using his timeouts there? And then what happened happened.
- 34:01Speaker 2: A touchdown with a fumble in the back of the
- 34:02Speaker 2: end zone. So— That's how you lose. When things like
- 34:06Speaker 2: that happen, of course, McDonnell wasn't counting on dropping the
- 34:09Speaker 2: ball in his own end zone when he was deciding
- 34:11Speaker 2: to take those timeouts and run it out. But that's
- 34:14Speaker 2: what happens, and that's why the Seahawks are 3-2 instead
- 34:16Speaker 2: of tied with the 49ers at 4-1 at the top
- 34:19Speaker 2: of the division. At 11 o'clock, Coach Bobby McIntyre is
- 34:23Speaker 2: going to join us from Long Island. He broke down
- 34:25Speaker 2: the game.
- 34:25Speaker 5: Just prepare to live.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Oh, man, it's going to be highly entertaining. I'm just
- 34:29Speaker 2: going to take some popcorn, put my feet up, and
- 34:31Speaker 2: listen to it. Coach Bobby McIntyre and his daughter Jessamyn
- 34:34Speaker 2: talk about the Seahawks 49ers.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Game at 11 o'clock.
- 34:36Speaker 6: Just so you guys know, this isn't just me having
- 34:38Speaker 6: my dad on the show.
- 34:39Speaker 2: No, he's qualified. He's a coach.
- 34:41Speaker 5: He broke down all the film.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Decades coach. I mean, a half century of coaching.
- 34:45Speaker 5: Has not done a ton of media.
- 34:48Speaker 6: But if you have ever heard him speak in public,
- 34:51Speaker 6: you're going to be in for a treat.
- 34:53Speaker 2: That's going to be entertaining at 11 o'clock. Up next,
- 34:56Speaker 2: we'll talk about the state of sports journalism in an institution.
- 35:01Speaker 2: In the Pacific Northwest died yesterday. That's the sports department
- 35:06Speaker 2: of the Tacoma News Tribune. We'll describe what happened, the
- 35:09Speaker 2: legacy that I was carrying for 12 years that I
- 35:11Speaker 2: no longer am carrying, and it's just sad. I want
- 35:14Speaker 2: to honor those, including a Pro Football Hall of Famer
- 35:17Speaker 2: next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Now back to Countdown to Monday Night Football with Greg Bell.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. Cold as the Rockies.
- 35:44Speaker 1: On Sports Radio.
- 35:45Speaker 2: 93.3, AJR FM. Yes, we've got Rams and Bills coming
- 35:55Speaker 2: up at 5.15. Dave Softy, Mahler, and Dick Fain are
- 35:57Speaker 2: going to take you up to that. They're at the
- 35:59Speaker 2: Emerald Queen Casino where they usually are on Monday afternoons
- 36:02Speaker 2: writing into Monday Night Football. Rams a 2-2 in the
- 36:05Speaker 2: NFC West, trying to get to 3-2, which would even
- 36:08Speaker 2: them with the Seahawks. Two games behind the San Francisco 49ers,
- 36:12Speaker 2: who are now 5-0 after their win here in Seattle yesterday.
- 36:16Speaker 2: We've talked a lot about that. Your Tacoma Dodge text
- 36:19Speaker 2: line 49451 is blowing up with concerns about the running game,
- 36:23Speaker 2: the running backs in particular. We'll see what they do
- 36:26Speaker 2: Thursday night in Denver. And if Robert Henry Jr., whom
- 36:30Speaker 2: they just signed last week to the active roster off
- 36:32Speaker 2: the Commander's practice squad in Washington will get a chance.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Dallas Jones Jr., up from the practice squad yesterday, did
- 36:39Speaker 2: not get a chance. He stayed on the sidelines while
- 36:41Speaker 2: Helani fumbled in the zone-end zone, and Emmanuel Wilson handed
- 36:45Speaker 2: the 49ers a second touchdown with a fumble deep in
- 36:48Speaker 2: the 11-yard line, in fact, of Seahawks territory. Yesterday was
- 36:52Speaker 2: my last day at the News Tribune. It really was
- 36:54Speaker 2: the last day of the News Tribune Sports Department. We
- 36:57Speaker 2: were down to just three writers before yesterday. Now we're
- 37:00Speaker 2: down to one. It was two prep high school sports
- 37:04Speaker 2: writers and myself, Seahawks. And really for a couple of
- 37:07Speaker 2: years now, many years now, I've been looking over my
- 37:09Speaker 2: shoulder wondering when this day was going to happen. We
- 37:12Speaker 2: were owned McClatchy Corporation. It owns also the Sacramento Bee
- 37:16Speaker 2: where I started working in 1999 as a sports intern. Yeah, 1999.
- 37:20Speaker 3: I'm old.
- 37:22Speaker 2: McClatchy was bought by a hedge fund. And Chatham Hedge Fund,
- 37:28Speaker 2: anyone who knows anything about hedge funds knows they strip
- 37:30Speaker 2: it for parts and Maximize the profits of it. Six
- 37:33Speaker 2: months ago, McClatchy pivoted to a new artificial intelligence initiative.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Not too hard to connect the dots there. So, as
- 37:45Speaker 2: of today, to the News Tribune and the South Sound. Actually, nowadays,
- 37:49Speaker 2: it's not just South Sound. It's everywhere you have a
- 37:51Speaker 2: thumb and a website, you can get the News Tribune.
- 37:54Speaker 2: It's as if the Seahawks franchise folded last night. They
- 37:58Speaker 2: will not even cover them. They won't have anything in
- 38:00Speaker 2: the paper that Seahawks, nothing. And we're talking about a
- 38:03Speaker 2: sports department that used to be one of the nation's
- 38:06Speaker 2: best for the size of its paper. Winning all kinds
- 38:09Speaker 2: of national awards. They covered the Olympics, the Super Bowls,
- 38:12Speaker 2: Final Fours, NBA Finals. They were everywhere, just like all
- 38:17Speaker 2: the big boys. The News Tribune was everywhere. John Clayton
- 38:21Speaker 2: is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. largely for
- 38:24Speaker 2: his work with the News Tribune for decades as a
- 38:27Speaker 2: Seahawks beat writer. And then his work for local radio and,
- 38:31Speaker 2: of course, ESPN television is what most people know him for.
- 38:35Speaker 2: But out here in Seattle, we first got to know
- 38:38Speaker 2: him when he moved off the Steelers beat in Pittsburgh
- 38:40Speaker 2: for the Pittsburgh Press and moved to the Tacoma News Tribune. Jessamyn,
- 38:45Speaker 2: you know John Clayton.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Very well.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I've cooked dinner at his house. He passed away in 2022.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I still talk to Pat, his wife.
- 38:51Speaker 3: His wife.
- 38:54Speaker 2: He's an institution at the Tacoma News Tribune. Then it
- 38:58Speaker 2: was Mike Sandoe, who's not exactly a nobody. You hear
- 39:02Speaker 2: him all the time on this station.
- 39:03Speaker 6: He has always been such good friends with Clayton and
- 39:07Speaker 6: with Pat still.
- 39:09Speaker 2: He lives in Spanaway in Pierce County and writes for
- 39:12Speaker 2: The Athletic and National Report. You hear him all the
- 39:14Speaker 2: time on the radio station here at KJR. Dave Bowling.
- 39:19Speaker 2: who ran with Clayton and ran with Sando and ran
- 39:21Speaker 2: with me on the beat. And we used to eat
- 39:23Speaker 2: taco time in Sheboygan on the drive back from Green
- 39:25Speaker 2: Bay and Lambeau Field. Wonderful human being. Now he's a novelist.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Had been working part-time for the spokesman. About six, seven
- 39:34Speaker 2: years ago now, the News Tribune forced him out. They
- 39:36Speaker 2: got rid of the other columnists. They got rid of
- 39:39Speaker 2: all columnists. John McGrath, who's just a fantastic wordsmith. John McGrath,
- 39:46Speaker 2: I sat next to him in the Super Bowl press
- 39:48Speaker 2: box at Glendale. In Super Bowl XLIX. And we marveled
- 39:52Speaker 2: over Jermaine Kersh's catch that got them down in position
- 39:55Speaker 2: to win the Super Bowl.
- 39:56Speaker 5: That was a circus catch.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I remember it. It would have been more famous than
- 40:01Speaker 2: David Tyree's catch, perhaps.
- 40:03Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. MVP right there.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Had the Seahawks pushed it across from the one-yard line.
- 40:07Speaker 2: When Russell Wilson turned and threw the pass intended for
- 40:10Speaker 2: Ricardo Lockett at the Patriots... Malcolm Butler intercepted at the
- 40:15Speaker 2: goal line. John McGrath turned to me and said, we
- 40:18Speaker 2: just witnessed the worst play call in Super Bowl history.
- 40:21Speaker 2: And I tapped John amid all the frenzy in the
- 40:24Speaker 2: stadium and in the press box. And I'm writing on deadline.
- 40:26Speaker 2: My story just flipped for a third time. I put
- 40:28Speaker 2: my hand on John McGrath's shoulder next to me. He
- 40:30Speaker 2: was chewing on a cigar. And he said, I said, John,
- 40:33Speaker 2: there's your call. And he just nodded. I just nodded.
- 40:36Speaker 2: And we went on about our work and we didn't
- 40:38Speaker 2: say anything for the next three hours while we were
- 40:39Speaker 2: just grinded. That's what I'm going to miss. That stuff.
- 40:43Speaker 2: The Sheboygan Taco Bell at 2 in the morning after
- 40:45Speaker 2: a Sunday evening game in Green Bay in the snow
- 40:50Speaker 2: with Dave Bolling. I did that for 12 years. And
- 40:54Speaker 2: John Clayton and Dave Bolling and Eric Williams after me.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I saw Eric Williams, a Tacoma native, Mount Tahoma High School,
- 41:03Speaker 2: who now works for the athletic or Fox Sports, excuse me,
- 41:06Speaker 2: covers the NFC West. I saw him yesterday. I said,
- 41:09Speaker 2: I'll pour one out for you, man, because the News
- 41:11Speaker 2: Tribune's sports section is No more. Many hats miles. Todd Millis.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Todd Millis is everywhere and everywhere and everywhere. Former prep writer.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Todd Dibas, who covered the News Tribune's Seahawk beat before
- 41:26Speaker 2: I did. Ryan Divish covered the Mariners so well.
- 41:32Speaker 5: Still does.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Larry LaRue was an institution on the Mariners beat for
- 41:35Speaker 2: the Tacoma News Tribune. Christian Capel became a Everything, what
- 41:42Speaker 2: he is for the Washington Huskies beat, started at the
- 41:45Speaker 2: News Tribune. All of that gone. Disintegrated and over like
- 41:50Speaker 2: it never happened because the people that own legacy journalism,
- 41:55Speaker 2: print journalism today just don't get it. They're not about people.
- 41:58Speaker 2: They're soulless.
- 42:00Speaker 5: As soon as you said hedge fund.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Hedge fund. Say no more, right? That's what happened. When
- 42:06Speaker 2: people say to me, well, what happened in the News Tribune?
- 42:08Speaker 2: I just say hedge fund.
- 42:11Speaker 6: Do you think this is something that could cycle where
- 42:14Speaker 6: it overcorrects at some point and they're like, oh, crap,
- 42:16Speaker 6: we need people?
- 42:17Speaker 2: Not in my lifetime. Here's the thing about AI. AI
- 42:20Speaker 2: is still going to be based on somebody's original work somewhere.
- 42:23Speaker 6: Right.
- 42:23Speaker 2: There's just so few or somebody somewhere doing the first
- 42:26Speaker 2: person reporting anymore. So you're perpetuating garbage and slop that's
- 42:30Speaker 2: not first-person accurate reporting. The fewer people that are out
- 42:34Speaker 2: there doing beat writing at the local level, the fewer
- 42:36Speaker 2: people that have first-source information for AI. AI has got
- 42:40Speaker 2: to be based on something. A computer can't wake up
- 42:42Speaker 2: in the morning and tell you about the Seahawks beating
- 42:44Speaker 2: the 49ers. They have to base that on something that's
- 42:47Speaker 2: out there. Some original source information, right?
- 42:51Speaker 5: Bring newspapers back, man, so that AI can't get it.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Well, the economic model is broken. Yes, it is. And
- 42:58Speaker 2: between advertising and free clicks on the Internet that you're
- 43:01Speaker 2: trying to charge for and all of that, the horse
- 43:03Speaker 2: and the hay had been out of the barn for decades.
- 43:06Speaker 2: And now it's just a slow, slow, sad, drip, bleed
- 43:09Speaker 2: to the end of an industry. I was fortunate. I
- 43:12Speaker 2: was in it for 27 years. I was an intern
- 43:16Speaker 2: in 1999. Unreal. I felt like a dinosaur every time
- 43:19Speaker 2: I got on an airplane that I was going to
- 43:21Speaker 2: a game as a daily newspaper print beat writer. There's
- 43:25Speaker 2: so few of us anymore. And my hat's off and
- 43:27Speaker 2: good luck to the Seattle Times, my colleagues and friends
- 43:30Speaker 2: on the beat. Bob Condotta and I have talked a
- 43:32Speaker 2: lot about this. He's another one. Bob Condotta from the
- 43:34Speaker 2: Tacoma News Tribune. Used to be the UW beat writer
- 43:36Speaker 2: for the News Tribune after he came over from Pullman
- 43:39Speaker 2: and the Moscow area. I could go on and on
- 43:42Speaker 2: to the break of dawn about the News Tribune's legacy
- 43:44Speaker 2: in the sports department and it's gone.
- 43:46Speaker 3: All gone.
- 43:47Speaker 2: No turkey hash, no turkey pot pie.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Gone.
- 43:50Speaker 2: What's that from?
- 43:53Speaker 5: Gosh, I'm really good at quotes.
- 43:54Speaker 2: No, Turkey Alley King.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Gone.
- 43:56Speaker 2: All gone.
- 43:58Speaker 5: I don't have it.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Christmas Story. Ah, dang it. The Bumpus Hounds.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Oh, gosh, yeah, no.
- 44:02Speaker 2: The Bumpus Hounds run right through the kitchen and tear
- 44:05Speaker 2: through the Christmas Day turkey.
- 44:07Speaker 5: Oh, that's what it is.
- 44:08Speaker 2: And Ralphie's talking about gone, all gone. And Dad comes
- 44:11Speaker 2: in and goes, get upstairs, get dressed. We're going out
- 44:15Speaker 2: to eat. I know. I love that.
- 44:17Speaker 5: And then they had Chinese food.
- 44:19Speaker 2: They cut the guillotine, the duck's head.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Yes. It's smiling.
- 44:22Speaker 2: It's smiling. Yeah.
- 44:24Speaker 5: At least they made light of it.
- 44:25Speaker 2: All right. Up next, let's go to New York, to
- 44:30Speaker 2: Long Island. This is going to be a family affair.
- 44:32Speaker 2: It's going to be hilarious. Coach Bobby McIntyre spent half
- 44:36Speaker 2: a century coaching college football, a defensive coach. He's going
- 44:40Speaker 2: to break down what he saw yesterday with the Seahawks
- 44:42Speaker 2: and 49ers. And Coach Mac's got questions. His daughter's got
- 44:45Speaker 2: questions for Coach Mac next on 93.3 KJRFM. The countdown
- 45:06Speaker 2: is on.
- 45:06Speaker 1: This is the countdown to Monday Night Football with Craig Bell.
- 45:10Speaker 2: He's going to go into the open field.
- 45:12Speaker 1: As we count you down to tonight's game at 515.
- 45:15Speaker 1: He'll coast in for the touchdown. Brought to you by
- 45:19Speaker 1: Frostbrood Coors Light. Cold as the Rockies. On Sports Radio 93.3,
- 45:24Speaker 1: KJR FM.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Welcome back. Yep, Rams and Bills is the Monday night
- 45:34Speaker 2: game tonight. We got that at 515 here on 93.3 KJFM.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre with you. The day after
- 45:41Speaker 2: the Seahawks lost 32-29 to 49ers. The undefeated San Francisco
- 45:46Speaker 2: 49ers now 5-0. Leading the NFC West by two full
- 45:49Speaker 2: games over Seattle. And the Rams are trying to get
- 45:51Speaker 2: the 3-2 tonight against the 3-1 Bills in Englewood. 515
- 45:56Speaker 2: kickoff right after Dave Softymiller and Dick Fain's show. at
- 46:00Speaker 2: the Emerald Queen Casino. 1135 Factor Fiction, your first chance
- 46:03Speaker 2: of the week to win $ 1, 000 from Lucky Eagle Casino
- 46:06Speaker 2: and Hotel. Right now, this is going to be cool.
- 46:09Speaker 2: We have a special guest, Jessamyn McIntyre, producer and co-host
- 46:12Speaker 2: of the show, The Greg Bell Show, has welcomed onto
- 46:16Speaker 2: the show Coach Bobby McIntyre. Coach Mac, who's spent, what,
- 46:22Speaker 2: half a century coaching football? Mostly college football, defensive coordinator.
- 46:28Speaker 2: I'm just trying to underscore his expertise here. Linebackers and
- 46:31Speaker 2: defensive coordinator. His daughter Jessamyn yesterday tasked him on Long
- 46:37Speaker 2: Island to watch the Seahawks and the 49ers. He did that.
- 46:40Speaker 2: He broke down film, just like he always has. And
- 46:42Speaker 2: he joins us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline from the
- 46:46Speaker 2: McIntyre Estate on Long Island.
- 46:49Speaker 5: Quite the estate.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Good morning, coach. It's great to hear from you again.
- 46:53Speaker 3: You too, Greg. Good to hear from you, man. You
- 46:58Speaker 3: guys put me to work out. Yes.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Your daughter wouldn't even let you have a Sunday in
- 47:01Speaker 2: October off.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Oh, you loved it.
- 47:05Speaker 3: I would have watched that game anyway.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I know you would have. So tell us your impressions.
- 47:10Speaker 2: First of all, maybe big picture. And then what concerns
- 47:12Speaker 2: you most about the hometown Seahawks after watching that game yesterday, Coach?
- 47:18Speaker 3: Well... First of all, if you told me the Seahawks
- 47:21Speaker 3: would have three turnovers and four sacks in the first half,
- 47:24Speaker 3: I'd say the game's over. So I give a lot
- 47:28Speaker 3: of credit to the defense for controlling what they could control,
- 47:32Speaker 3: you know, and forgetting about the things they can't. So
- 47:35Speaker 3: they play really tough. You know, Shanahan's offense is loaded
- 47:39Speaker 3: with talent. He does such a great job with that offense. So,
- 47:44Speaker 3: you know, but three picks in the first half and then,
- 47:47Speaker 3: Donald throws a pick in the first series of the
- 47:49Speaker 3: second half and, you know, the Seahawks go three and out.
- 47:53Speaker 3: So I think they did an unbelievable job. And there was,
- 47:57Speaker 3: you know, like Debo Samuel turned the ball over. Pritchett
- 48:02Speaker 3: had a huge pick. So it was going both ways.
- 48:06Speaker 3: The other thing I liked about it was how physical
- 48:08Speaker 3: and passionate it was. It was, you know, it's people
- 48:12Speaker 3: say the NFL is getting soft and all that stuff.
- 48:15Speaker 3: That wasn't the case. Yesterday, that was a really fun
- 48:20Speaker 3: game to watch, even though it didn't come out the
- 48:22Speaker 3: way that you guys wanted it to. I thought it
- 48:25Speaker 3: was a great game to watch right down to the end.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. The final play. Your daughter has the floor, sir. Oh, yeah.
- 48:33Speaker 6: Well, let's talk about the fumbling issues. I asked Greg
- 48:36Speaker 6: this question a little bit earlier. George Lonnie, especially in
- 48:39Speaker 6: the end zone, in his own end zone. fumbles that ball,
- 48:42Speaker 6: but it seems to be kind of a bugaboo for
- 48:45Speaker 6: the Seahawks right now when it comes to the fumbling issues.
- 48:49Speaker 5: Is that on the coaches? Is that on the players?
- 48:52Speaker 5: Where is the issue?
- 48:53Speaker 3: Here's what guys are taught at a very young age
- 49:00Speaker 3: in high school. You cover four points of pressure on
- 49:03Speaker 3: the ball. So you cover the ball with your fingers
- 49:06Speaker 3: and you squeeze them into your ribs and forearm and
- 49:10Speaker 3: your bicep. Those are your four points of pressure. And
- 49:14Speaker 3: I always said, even though I'm a defensive guy, you know,
- 49:17Speaker 3: and I've heard from other coaches who I've coached with,
- 49:20Speaker 3: if you're in a city, you always have those city,
- 49:22Speaker 3: meaning you're in a crowd of people. You have those
- 49:25Speaker 3: four points covered and your offhand is your fifth point
- 49:29Speaker 3: of pressure. And that is the most important thing to you.
- 49:33Speaker 3: You know, if, if you don't control the ball, meaning that,
- 49:39Speaker 3: you know, turning the ball over, you're going to win
- 49:41Speaker 3: most of your games. So that's the utmost important thing,
- 49:45Speaker 3: is to cover that football with four points of pressure. Now, Helani,
- 49:50Speaker 3: and I don't want to be too critical of him,
- 49:52Speaker 3: but he was hanging that ball out with his hand
- 49:54Speaker 3: and his forearm, and that was it. You know, so...
- 49:57Speaker 3: And that's for kids. If you're listening to the show,
- 49:59Speaker 3: cover the ball with four points of pressure if you're
- 50:02Speaker 3: in the country, and five points of pressure if you're
- 50:05Speaker 3: in the city. And that's what you do.
- 50:07Speaker 2: And.
- 50:10Speaker 3: And he fumbled the ball. You all saw him. He
- 50:14Speaker 3: fumbled the ball with nobody near him. It was wild.
- 50:17Speaker 2: After the catch, exactly.
- 50:18Speaker 5: It was like one point of pressure there.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Coach, when you have.
- 50:21Speaker 3: I think the running back, the running back coach is
- 50:24Speaker 3: going to have him outside pre-practice with all the other
- 50:28Speaker 3: running backs just swiping at that football. And I would
- 50:31Speaker 3: ask for that if I wanted it. I'd say, if
- 50:33Speaker 3: I was the line, I'd say, can we go out early?
- 50:36Speaker 3: So you guys can punch the ball out from my forearms,
- 50:41Speaker 3: you know.
- 50:42Speaker 2: For a coach, Coach Mack, how difficult is that to
- 50:46Speaker 2: instill on a running back in the open field or
- 50:48Speaker 2: when he's just running? Because he's getting paid in college
- 50:52Speaker 2: football too now. He's getting paid to get yards. And
- 50:55Speaker 2: his instinct is to run as fast as he can
- 50:57Speaker 2: and not put four or five points of contact on
- 51:00Speaker 2: a ball. Jadarian Price talked about the same thing in
- 51:02Speaker 2: the locker room. After he lost his second fumble in
- 51:04Speaker 2: two games against Washington, I'm just going to have to
- 51:06Speaker 2: not worry about gaining yards. How hard is it to
- 51:09Speaker 2: convince a running back to do that? Because let's face it,
- 51:12Speaker 2: if he's in the NFL, he's been running free for
- 51:14Speaker 2: thousands of yards his whole life.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I just, and it's maybe from a coach's point
- 51:20Speaker 3: of view, I just think once you do that, make
- 51:24Speaker 3: it part of your routine, you're always going to have
- 51:28Speaker 3: four points of pressure on that ball. And I don't think.
- 51:31Speaker 2: it.
- 51:31Speaker 3: Affects your speed or ability to change direction or any
- 51:34Speaker 3: of those things. That's the most important thing. The ball
- 51:37Speaker 3: is everything, right? Exactly. On defense, you get the ball out.
- 51:41Speaker 3: On offense, you don't lose that football. So that's number one.
- 51:45Speaker 3: I'm an NFL running back. I'm going to get used
- 51:47Speaker 3: to running full speed with four points of pressure on
- 51:51Speaker 3: that ball.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Coach, let me ask you, Coach Mack, let me ask
- 51:56Speaker 2: you about the sequence at the end of the first
- 51:57Speaker 2: half when Mike McDonald used his timeouts on defense, even
- 52:00Speaker 2: though the 49ers were on the plus side of the field.
- 52:03Speaker 2: They punt the ball and down it at the four.
- 52:04Speaker 2: The Seahawks have first down going out from the four-yard
- 52:07Speaker 2: line with 18 seconds left in the first half of
- 52:09Speaker 2: a one-point game. I was talking in the press box
- 52:12Speaker 2: with a colleague of mine, take a knee, if the
- 52:15Speaker 2: 49ers want to use their three defensive timeouts, three knees,
- 52:18Speaker 2: so be it. But what do you think about running
- 52:20Speaker 2: offense there in that situation?
- 52:23Speaker 3: Well, it's okay for me if you want to run
- 52:26Speaker 3: the ball. I didn't like the play choice.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Oh, why is that?
- 52:30Speaker 3: Somebody, I don't know. Who announced that game.
- 52:32Speaker 2: By the way? It was Kevin Burkard and Tom Brady
- 52:36Speaker 2: on the Fox call yesterday.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Well, one of those guys made a good point. Like,
- 52:40Speaker 3: if you're going to run an outside zone in that situation,
- 52:45Speaker 3: an outside zone or a stretch zone has a lot
- 52:47Speaker 3: of chance for penetration from the D-line players. And that's
- 52:51Speaker 3: exactly what happened. You know, Holani just, you know, just
- 52:55Speaker 3: got the ball in his hands and there was a
- 52:57Speaker 3: D lineman in his face. You know, it's almost like
- 52:59Speaker 3: he didn't have a chance to cover the five points
- 53:02Speaker 3: of pressure there. He should add five points of pressure still.
- 53:05Speaker 3: But I didn't like the play choice, to be honest
- 53:08Speaker 3: with you. You know, and that's a little bit of
- 53:10Speaker 3: second guessing in hindsight. But I agree with you 100%.
- 53:15Speaker 3: If you're going to run the ball, run an inside
- 53:17Speaker 3: zone where it's more man blocking and you know, you
- 53:20Speaker 3: have a better chance of ball security there. And, but I,
- 53:25Speaker 3: I agree with you. You gotta, you know, just run
- 53:28Speaker 3: the clock and punt the ball if you can.
- 53:31Speaker 6: So, Robert McIntyre, Coach Mack, joining us here on TKJR.
- 53:37Speaker 6: And Coach Mack, you gave a lot of roses to
- 53:41Speaker 6: the defense, and I think you're correct when it comes
- 53:44Speaker 6: to them staying in that game.
- 53:46Speaker 5: But what more would you want to... We had a.
- 53:48Speaker 6: Good conversation last night about Josh Jobe, and I wanted
- 53:52Speaker 6: to get your analysis on him.
- 53:55Speaker 3: I really like that kid. I mean, it's a real
- 53:58Speaker 3: casual observation, but I think... First of all, they put
- 54:02Speaker 3: him on Evans, who's out of control, that kid. He's
- 54:06Speaker 3: so good.
- 54:07Speaker 5: He's on my fantasy team.
- 54:10Speaker 3: So that in the first place, and he's a young kid, right? Yes.
- 54:15Speaker 3: That corner, 29? Yes. I think he's really good, that kid.
- 54:19Speaker 3: I think he's got a really good future. Changes directions well.
- 54:24Speaker 3: He's tenacious. All those things you want. He had a
- 54:29Speaker 3: big PI at some point, but Shoot, that was against Evans.
- 54:34Speaker 6: Yeah, give up a touchdown or 15 yards.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Exactly. So, yeah, I think he's got a bright future.
- 54:44Speaker 2: What'd you like about the Seahawks defense, Coach, from a
- 54:46Speaker 2: Seahawks perspective? Ernest Jones had nine tackles and a sack.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Byron Murphy, a defensive tackle with two more sacks. Brock
- 54:54Speaker 2: Purdy had not been sacked at all before yesterday's game.
- 54:58Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you, Brock Perry did a good
- 55:00Speaker 3: job of escaping pressure too yesterday. But the thing I
- 55:03Speaker 3: like is, you know, when you are setting up your
- 55:08Speaker 3: offense and trying to protect the quarterback, you have certain
- 55:10Speaker 3: guys you're going to double. Certain guys you're going to
- 55:13Speaker 3: single block. There's nobody on that defensive line that I
- 55:16Speaker 3: would be comfortable single blocking, you know? So, and I
- 55:22Speaker 3: think every one of those guys is a threat up
- 55:24Speaker 3: to the single block. And you don't get that on
- 55:26Speaker 3: every defensive line. And frankly, I feel the same way
- 55:29Speaker 3: about the 49ers D line. They're just as good. Those
- 55:32Speaker 3: two defensive lines are unbelievable. So I'm not comfortable as
- 55:36Speaker 3: an offensive coordinator, single blocking any of those guys, you know?
- 55:41Speaker 3: So what are you gonna do? You chip more to
- 55:42Speaker 3: back or a tight end or something like that. But
- 55:45Speaker 3: you know, then you're changing what you're trying to do
- 55:48Speaker 3: on offense. So I think both defensive lines are really good.
- 55:55Speaker 3: And you know, the, The Seahawks play so much too
- 56:00Speaker 3: high safeties, and that's hard to stop the run in that. So,
- 56:05Speaker 3: you know, unless you jump the front up and stuff,
- 56:07Speaker 3: but they weren't doing that. So they play so much
- 56:11Speaker 3: too high safeties and then run some zone pressures out
- 56:15Speaker 3: of that look and stuff. But that's hard, in my opinion.
- 56:19Speaker 3: So I think they have so much confidence in their
- 56:21Speaker 3: front guys.
- 56:25Speaker 2: That.
- 56:26Speaker 3: you know, they're going to make the plays and they
- 56:28Speaker 3: can play a little bit more coverage, you know? So
- 56:32Speaker 3: I was really impressed with that. I thought the linebackers
- 56:35Speaker 3: were good. Who's number three? Is he a safety or
- 56:37Speaker 3: a strong linebacker?
- 56:39Speaker 2: He's a hybrid Sam strong side linebacker, Nicky Manwari. He
- 56:42Speaker 2: was a demon last year playing as a safety, as
- 56:44Speaker 2: a linebacker. And he played, he's even played some defensive end,
- 56:46Speaker 2: but that's the Jack of all trades guy that Mike
- 56:49Speaker 2: McDonald uses.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Especially. I saw him wind up at the strong linebacker,
- 56:54Speaker 3: but they haven't listed as a safety.
- 56:55Speaker 6: Right.
- 56:56Speaker 3: He's a good player, that kid.
- 56:59Speaker 5: We like him.
- 56:59Speaker 3: I thought number 32 got a little glummed up in
- 57:04Speaker 3: the run game, you know, but I think he's a
- 57:07Speaker 3: good cover guy.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Great Thomas.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, and their backhand's really good, I think. So,
- 57:16Speaker 3: I don't know. The thing about the Seahawks to me is,
- 57:20Speaker 3: and I always liked them because they run a football
- 57:23Speaker 3: team and they still try to do that now, is
- 57:27Speaker 3: be able to run the game, open your playbook up
- 57:30Speaker 3: if you can with some play-action pass and, you know,
- 57:35Speaker 3: that type of thing to control football, use the clock up,
- 57:39Speaker 3: and just play great defense. You know, on defense, you
- 57:42Speaker 3: do the exact opposite. You stop the run, but they
- 57:45Speaker 3: can't open their playbook, you know, and then you try
- 57:48Speaker 3: to affect the quarterback in obvious passing situations with coverage
- 57:52Speaker 3: and pressure and so on and so forth. They always
- 57:54Speaker 3: did that. I think the Seahawks are not quite as
- 57:58Speaker 3: good in the run game anymore. So when Donald's running
- 58:01Speaker 3: a play action pass, it's like, you know, linebackers are
- 58:04Speaker 3: not flying up and, you know, it's, I think they
- 58:08Speaker 3: have a little less effective run game, which that really affects,
- 58:13Speaker 3: you know, how defenses look at. how they're going to
- 58:17Speaker 3: attack an offense. Exactly.
- 58:19Speaker 2: It's like, you've been watching them since training camp. You're
- 58:21Speaker 2: exactly right. You just crystallize the offensive situation. You watch
- 58:26Speaker 2: a lot of coach Mac is joining us from long Island.
- 58:28Speaker 2: You watch a lot of East coast football giants or
- 58:30Speaker 2: jets are always on your local screens and, You probably
- 58:33Speaker 2: don't get to watch the Seahawks as much unless Jessamyn's
- 58:36Speaker 2: your daughter.
- 58:36Speaker 5: I tell him to.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Yeah. What do you think of that?
- 58:40Speaker 3: I actually do when I can.
- 58:41Speaker 2: Okay. So what do you think of the Seahawks and
- 58:43Speaker 2: 49ers versus the rest of the NFL teams you've been
- 58:46Speaker 2: watching so far this season? Where do they rate? Pretty high,
- 58:48Speaker 2: it sounds like.
- 58:50Speaker 3: They're very highly, you know. I just think they're better
- 58:53Speaker 3: than probably, you know, Super Bowl contenders, both of them.
- 58:58Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Like, either one of them
- 59:00Speaker 3: could get in the Super Bowl. I do think that.
- 59:03Speaker 3: The Seahawks have to find a way to be more
- 59:06Speaker 3: effective in the run game. I kind of like the
- 59:08Speaker 3: 49ers a little better. right now. But I think they're,
- 59:13Speaker 3: you know, in the top five in the NFL right now.
- 59:18Speaker 3: You know, maybe the 49ers have a little edge on them.
- 59:22Speaker 3: But I just love the brand of football. You know,
- 59:24Speaker 3: those guys are all tough, playing tough. you know, how
- 59:28Speaker 3: about green lawn head.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Head, butts, head, but the guy without his helmet on,
- 59:35Speaker 2: what'd you think of that?
- 59:37Speaker 3: Well, coming from my coach's day, I'm saying, how dumb
- 59:41Speaker 3: is that? That is the dumbest thing I ever saw,
- 59:44Speaker 3: you know? And cause I hurt your team, but that's
- 59:48Speaker 3: the type of game it was. It was high passion,
- 59:51Speaker 3: you know, a fiery game. And that's what you want
- 59:54Speaker 3: to see when you turn on any football, college, NFL, So,
- 59:59Speaker 3: you know, and then you got this Fred Warner kid
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: is unbelievable too. He's sick. He's so good. And he
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: looks like a God physically. Then he's so fundamentally sound.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: You could tell like in high school, he was well coached,
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: you know, seeing schemes and, you know, and the other
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: thing I love about him, he's always in a perfect stance.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: You know, he's like, fundamentals first and everything else is
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: after that. He's so good. That kid. So, and he
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: punched out that one on the 11th.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: He did directs direct hit what Jason got the best
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: of it.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> Anyway.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: That's why I thought 32 got a little glum. But anyway,
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: go ahead, Jess. I'm sorry.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: You're fine, dude. I'm used to it.
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: Anyway, no, I was just going to say, because we
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: were praising Fred Warner so much, but how did JSN
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: get the best of him in that situation?
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: That was insane. He didn't get touched going into the
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: end zone.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: I know it. Bo actually, my grandson, he's 11. He
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: was screaming about that.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: He got a lot of talent on the field. Nobody's perfect.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: And how about the Jigba?
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: Yes, Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: That's what I was talking about. He was limping on
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: the sideline. He was trying to walk that out in
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: his first half.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: He went right back into the game. He did. He
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: was obviously taped up and You know, it's just that
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: type of passion and toughness. You just love that. And
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: you don't see it all the time. That was a
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: great thing to watch.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: That was another thing I was going to ask. Oh, wait, no,
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: he's continuing.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: No, go ahead. Go ahead, Jess.
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: Okay, thanks, Dan. I have the floor now. I've got
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: the big spoon.
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: So what I was going to ask is whether you
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: see the toughness of NFL being eroded throughout the changes
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: we've seen in the sport.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: Well, I think... I think some of it had to
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: take place. Like, you have to protect the quarterbacks. They've
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: taken such a beating over, you know, since 10 years
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: ago and back. And you got to do something to
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: protect those guys. And I think through collective bargaining, you know,
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: they've cut down contacts and practice and all of that stuff.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: But if I watched the game yesterday, I'd say it hasn't...
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: these changes haven't affected the physicality and toughness and passion
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: in the game at all. I do think it has
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: in other places. But, you know, I think it's a
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: fine line to play. You do have to protect the
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: players better than we have in the past. So I
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: think that was necessary. Yeah.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Coach, Bobby McIntyre, former Hofstra, Stony Brook, Bryant, High school.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Everywhere, man.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: All over the place. A friend at Army, Navy. I
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: appreciate you joining us, sir. Is Jessamyn grounded for interrupting you?
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: We'll talk about that when we get off. Hey, Greg,
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: I'm going to the Army, Navy.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Yes, sir. You will, and we'll put you back on
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: the air in Times Square on December the 11th. That's awesome.
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: We might put you on before that, too, just so
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Coach, it's great to catch up with you again. Thanks
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: for joining in, and thanks for watching the game with us.
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: You too, man. Great talking with you guys. I'll talk
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: to you. Bye. He said, bye, Dad.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: She's talking to him now and saying goodbye on the phone.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: That's Jessamyn McIntyre's father, Coach Bobby McIntyre, who spent pretty
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: much damn near half a century coaching college football, a
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: little bit of high school football on the East Coast,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: on Long Island. Great friends and coached with Dan Quinn,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: the commander's coach. He's got a legacy and a lineage
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: that goes far in East Coast football. Did he coach
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: Dan Quinn as a player? No, they were coaches together.
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: DQ was the defensive line coach and my dad was
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: the linebackers coach. And then they collectively, even though it
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: wasn't their position coach, but Raheem Morris came from there
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: as well.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Raheem Morris was on your staff with your dad? He
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: was a safety.
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: No, he was a safety. He actually played for them. Yeah, but,
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: I mean, they weren't.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: My dad's best friend, who is my best friend's dad,
- 1:04:36Speaker 6: was a defensive coordinator, so we all considered him ours.
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: And we're still friends to this day. So he comes
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: from a long line of really, really great people, coaches,
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: and friends.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: And he raised a pretty hell of a nice daughter, too.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: She's a great family.
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: No, it's just he's so good and engaging when he talks.
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: And he can break down things so much. Like, I
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: can't watch a game with him. I would go home
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: for Christmas, you know, when the Seahawks were in their
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: Pete Carroll heyday.
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: And he would just pause everything. I'm like, Dad, this
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: is life. Like, I have to watch this. And he's, no, no,
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: hold on. Who is 31? He's my favorite player in
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: the league. That is not a flag. And he was
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: talking about Cam Chancellor. You notice how he talks about
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: guys as numbers.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Oh, that's what coaches do. I know.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: That's exactly what coaches do.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: 29.
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: That was not a flag. 31 is my favorite player
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: in the league now. Didn't even ask his name. I'm like,
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: that's Cam Chancellor. We like him too.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: Anyway, thank you guys.
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: Hopefully we'll get him on, as it's been asked by
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: a lot of people on the text line.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: Hopefully we can make this a regular thing.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: One of the best ones. I can't even wait for
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: the break to say this. 206, Jess's dad sounds like
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: he knows people, if you know what I mean.
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: Yeah, I did respond and I said we're Irish, not Italian, okay? Like,
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: I know what he's saying. It's his New York accent.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: I know what he's getting at. It was like a
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: good fellow's thing.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Up next, we'll read more of the text off the
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line 49451. I love that, Eric. Thank you.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: 49451 Tacoma Dodge. And any talkbacks, and you know she'll. Jess,
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: we're going to play any talkbacks you have on the
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Hit that little red microphone button.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: And in 10 minutes' time, 1135 Factor Fiction, your first
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: chance this week to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Casino and Hotel, all coming up on 93.3 KJRFM. Coach
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Mack is an absolute stud. Watching one Seahawk game. He
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: really knows his stuff. Awesome to have him on.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: Hey, Jess.
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: Love hearing your dad on the reel. Is there any
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: way you can do a show with him and Hugh
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: Millen together? That would be an awesome episode. I would
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: love to hear that. A lot of football knowledge there.
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: We could learn a lot from him.
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: Hi.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: Dan Wilson here, watching the Seahawks game.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: It's pretty tough out there.
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: Thank you for those. And if I got Hugh... And
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: my dad together. We'd have to live stream it.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: That would be pretty hilarious. What do you mean he'd be?
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: He'd have from a defensive perspective. And of course, she
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: would be the quarterback from an offensive perspective.
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: It'd be the best thing ever.
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: Next time I go to Arizona, I'm just going to
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: invite my dad and we'll go visit here.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: I can't wait to see him at Army-Navy. December 11th,
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Jess and McIntyre and I will be in Times Square
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: for the Army-Navy Radio Row Media Day, the day before
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: Army and Navy play in the latest of one of
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: the greatest rivalries in sports. It's on the Meadowlands, the
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: second Saturday in December, and we're there every year for KJR,
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: and I am so honored to be there. It's a
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: reunion for myself and West Point classmates and faculty members
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: that I know. I've gotten to know Jeff Monk and
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: the Army coach a little bit through this. It's pretty cool.
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: Yeah, well, the access that they provide us to has
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: been just second to none.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: They are really proud of their student-athletes.
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: The military students as well, and we should mention the
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: fact that they're also students.
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: Officers. Officers, sorry, but yes, they are in college.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Officers to be.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: We do get a lot of, yes, the cadets, my bad.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: They're students.
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: They are students, and they're still doing all of this
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: while earning degrees.
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: I've been blown away. This will be my fifth one.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: And I'm just blown away by.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: All of it.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: 2-5-3 on the Tacoma Dodge text line. 4-9-4-5-1. Why the
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: hell didn't they take a knee going into the half?
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: 2-5, another 2-5-3. Hawks sideline. All caps. Why the hell
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: didn't they take a knee to go into the half?
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: The entire sideline and crowd was screaming, take a knee. Instead,
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: they ran the ball and dropped the ball in the
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: end zone. Your dad was right. It was the defensive
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: line getting penetration on the outside zone stretch play. And
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: a longer developing play invites that penetration, and your guys
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: get beat. Christian Haynes, by the way, made a little
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: token double-team chip before he got to the second level.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: He didn't even try to help Jalen Sandella, who was
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: getting overwhelmed by the nose tackle in that play. What
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: else from the Seahawks? Yeah, the Seahawks sideline, got that.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: A lot of people chiming in about AI. 206. So
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: AI is going to plagiarize somebody else's nudes and fact-finding? Yes,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: already doing it. Like, did it since the beginning of it. Yeah.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: 253 says, I have no interest in reading something written
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: by someone, something, excuse me, written by something that has
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: no physical experience in said arena. I could give a
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: rat's behind the comprehension it has. 425, it's very sad. Yes,
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: my mom worked for the Everett Herald back in the 90s,
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: but tradition doesn't pay the bill. Just ask Sears, Kmart,
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: carriage makers, and now newspapers, magazines, and the whole other
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: host of businesses, print businesses. Because if a business isn't profitable,
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: then it will become extinct. Now, of course, it's capitalism.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: But it's a shame they couldn't find a way to
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: change with the times and make it somewhat profitable. And
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: here we are. Speaking of money, you want $ 1, 000?
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: Here we go. I can't take that from you.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: We're set to go. Glad you're with us. It's your
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: shot at our.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000 grand prize.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: There's the drumline. We're going back onto campus. The big
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: game this coming weekend in college football is No. 4
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Ohio State and No. 5 defending national champion Indiana. That's
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: down the road actually in Bloomington from West Lafayette where
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the Huskies will be on Friday night playing at Purdue. Saturday,
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: 9 a.m. our time on Big Fox, No. 5 Ohio
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: State at No. 4 Ohio State, No.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: 5 Indiana.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: A rematch of the Big Ten title game last year.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Indiana's Big Ten wins this year, 29 points in winning
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: at Northwestern, 47 at Rutgers, if you can call them
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: a Big Ten team, 20 at Nebraska this past weekend
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: when they won by three late in the game against
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: the Cornhuskers. Last year in the Big Ten title game
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: in Indianapolis, Coach Cignetti's Hoosiers held down the Buckeyes 13-10
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: in winning the Big Ten title en route to the
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: national championship game. The total points in this game, 50
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: and a half. Ohio State's favored by three and a half,
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: and I was intrigued by that. But 50 and a
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: half total points in a rematch of a Big Ten
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: title game that had 23 total points last December. It
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: probably won't be 13-10, but I'm not sure it's going
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: to get up to 50 combined. Give me the under.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: I'm taking Ohio State, Indiana, under 50 and a half.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Army in the under worked for us last week. So
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: an inflated number to me. Two teams with stellar athletes
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: on the defensive side of the ball. Two of the
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: best in the country. Ohio State, Indiana, under 50.5 points,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: total points. That means 25, 50.5. So 50 and fewer
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: would win.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: If you agree.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: In other words, if you want to win $ 1, 000, text
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you want to disagree and just
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: throw your chance away, text FICTION to 49451. Remember, this
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: show leads the station. We're number one in the standings.
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: No surprise there.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Hey, all I have to do is bat 500 and
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: I'm good.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: 49451. Text fact or fiction.
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: Fact.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Ohio State and Indiana. Fifty and a half under total
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: points is what I'm saying. You got about 11 and
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: a half minutes to do that. And then Ian Furness
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: will have another choice at 235 p.m. O-H-I-O. My native state.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Back to the. Technically mine, too.
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: Is it?
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Sandusky. You were born in Sandusky?
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: I was born in Sandusky. Moved to New York. before
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: I was one, but yes, Tommy Boy Town.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: I didn't know that.
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: That's why I'm so funny.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: How did I not know that?
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: Yep, that's what it says on my passport.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Sandusky, Ohio. My wife was born and raised in Elyria, Ohio,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: which is about 45 minutes east of Sandusky, Cedar Point.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Been there many times to Cedar Point, the roller coaster
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: capital of the world.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Back to the Tacoma Dodge. That's great. I didn't know that.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge, text line 49451. A lot of people worried
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: about Sam Darnold. 360, Sam Darnold, five interceptions last three games.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: What I see in Sam is a lack of confidence.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Looks slow when he rolls out. Does not look comfortable.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: He looks fearful. Either he's playing hurt or he's worried
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: about getting hurt again. Or he doesn't have a dependable
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: running game. About Kenneth Walker, 206, you can't pay everyone.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: The mistake was relying on Helani and not adding a
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: third string depth and free agency or deep in the draft.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Serviceable will do until the other guys get healthy. They
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: still have Murphy and others to pay, too, down the road.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: That's true. 206 reminds us that Walker was not coming
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: back anyway. Yes, that's true. I learned that back in
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: September when he got started this job share last year
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: with Zach Charbonnet in a contract year. He was not. 360.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: I have concerns in all three phases, honestly. Pretty much
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: everything about the offense. If it's not JSN, we pretty
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: much have no offense. And I heard Hugh Mellon this
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: morning saying they do not have a number two receiver
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: right now. That last pass to Cooper Cup was only
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: his second target of the game. He had one catch
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: for six yards before that. And Rasheed Shaheed is still
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: not a factor in this offense. Not a consistent threat
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: to get the ball. He's just not.
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: But when he is.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: It's just like a lightning strike right now.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: Are they hiding him?
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: I don't think Darnold trusts and looks at him. I mean,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: he's so dependent on Smith and Jig, but he even
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: threw to him when he was completely covered on the
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: third play of the game yesterday on third down.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Special 206, 360 says special teams are starting field position
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: all season. Hasn't been very good. And opposing teams tend
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: to start every drive beyond the 35 yard line, even
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: on punts. The defense is pretty solid. However, not stuffing,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: stuffing the run very well. And past defense has been sketchy. Well,
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: that's about covers the whole team. That's why he said that.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: 253 wants to know, why is Helani still on the roster?
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: His blocking on third down is anything but good. It
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: has been poor. We've mentioned that a couple times, that
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: he's known for that, and he's missed some key blocks
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: on past situations over the season. His ball security is
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: not good. This might be from Coach Mack. His ball
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: security is not good. He fumbled a reception that could
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: have gone for significant yardage.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: He did.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Had to go back and pick the ball up. If
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: you bench your first-round draft choice for two fumbles, why
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: not Helani as well? We asked Mike McDonald that yesterday.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: And he said, we're out of running backs. You don't
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: want me out there, nor do I want to be
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: out there. That was his answer. But it still goes
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: unsaid as to why Velas Jones Jr. did not play
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: after being active to the roster.
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: Yeah, when he was activated, I was surprised that they
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: didn't at least try.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Oh, do you have the clip of him talking about
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: not traveling to Witherspoon or moving Witherspoon on to Evans?
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: Not immediately.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Okay, we'll try to get to that for the next segment.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: McDonald had a comment about being asked, Brady Henderson, the
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: very last question in the press conference yesterday. It was
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: the walk-off. McDonald didn't like it. About why did you
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: stick with Josh Jobe on Mike Evans throughout the game?
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: Oh, on Josh Jobe. Yeah, I have that right now.
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: Hang tight, hang tight.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Was there any thought of approaching him a little bit
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: differently after, you know, they featured him there at the end? Or,
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: you know, what were those conversations on the sideline? What
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: do you mean, treat him to anything differently? You know,
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: covering him up any differently, it seemed like Cho was
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: kind of on an island.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: No. What do.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: You mean, treat him to anything?
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: The guy's a great receiver. We're trying to cover him.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Anything else?
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: Anything else?
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: I think that our friend Dave Pearson read the room
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Brady Henderson was trying to be nice to Josh Jobe
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: and take Jobe off of him, and that's what he meant,
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: but he just said, cover him differently. Meaning with Witherspoon,
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: who was the other outside corner for the majority of
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: the game yesterday, again, Trevon Diggs and Nehemiah Pritchett only
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: played a combined 12 snaps out of 60 on defense,
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: which meant that preponderance of time The outside corners were
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: Witherspoon and Jobe. Witherspoon started the game on the left side,
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: and he flipped over to the right after that first
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: touchdown drive that went down the defensive right side. The
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: third down completion to Evans on Jobe was down the
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: defensive right corner, as was the two-yard touchdown pass on
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: the next play. So McDonald flipped him. And what did
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Shanahan do? He flipped Evans back over to the other
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: side and had him on Jobe for most of the
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: rest of the first quarter and then almost all of
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: the fourth quarter. I was really curious why they went
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: away from that for much of the second and third quarter.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: But then when the game went online, They got their
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: 11 points by throwing at Josh Jobe with Mike Evans,
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: who was playing with a broken rib. Talk about toughness.
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: You can barely breathe, most people, with a broken rib.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: And Mike Evans is getting 100-plus yards in an NFL
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: game against the No. 1 defense in the league. Up
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: next is Ian Furness. I'm not sure if he's out
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: here or where he might be today. Maybe he's at Krakening.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: He's up next to tell us what's on his show.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Kraken had a big weekend, winning their first two games
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: on a five-game road trip. Ian's up next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre, Justin McIntyre's dad. I threw the
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: day after the Seahawks 49ers game. Now Ian Furness, the
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: mayor of Maple Valley, joining us. I heard that was
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: a fantastic event, by the way. The end of your
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: keg last week. Oh, we had a good time.
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a good time. We had great support.
- 1:18:56Speaker 8: Great support out there.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: It was awesome.
- 1:18:58Speaker 8: The vehicle that is radio, Greg, is a powerful tool.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: It is. Unlike other mediums, unfortunately.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: The print medium was at one time. It used to be.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: It used to be.
- 1:19:07Speaker 8: It used to be. But no more, unfortunately.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: You were very eloquent and poignant and accurate last night
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: on TwitterX stating how great the News Tribune's sports department
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: had been.
- 1:19:18Speaker 8: It takes me a lot to say something on Twitter
- 1:19:20Speaker 8: outside of retweeting something that's a fact.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: Can confirm.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: I just don't care. And I hate that.
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: I hate that because I think that's part of the
- 1:19:28Speaker 8: reason we are where we are with newspapers now is
- 1:19:31Speaker 8: stupid stuff like Twitter.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: But, uh, yeah, I, I.
- 1:19:36Speaker 8: For those who didn't see, I just, Greg mentioned in
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: his video last night, wrapping up the Seahawk game, you know,
- 1:19:40Speaker 8: that was it. And we've known that for a while, uh,
- 1:19:43Speaker 8: Jess and me and a few others and, you know,
- 1:19:45Speaker 8: became official yesterday. Uh, you know, and it's awful for
- 1:19:49Speaker 8: you and it's awful for, uh, Not just sports fans.
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: It's awful for people. I mean, the newspaper should be
- 1:19:56Speaker 8: an important part of our society. And for the South
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: Sound to lose its newspaper, and make no mistake, they have.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: It's no longer.
- 1:20:06Speaker 8: It might still be there in name, but it's no
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: longer relevant. It's a sad day. And just from a
- 1:20:12Speaker 8: sports standpoint, yeah, it's just amazing the people that came.
- 1:20:15Speaker 8: And I didn't mention all of them. You know, the
- 1:20:18Speaker 8: late Mike Kahn.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:20:19Speaker 8: Um, you know, Bart Wright and others that I didn't mention,
- 1:20:22Speaker 8: but you know, Sando, Clayton, Larry LaRue, yourself, uh, Dave Bowling,
- 1:20:27Speaker 8: John McGrath, uh, Manny Hatt, Millis, uh, you know, and
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: John Manley is left there with the high school stuff
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: and he does a hell of a job, but, uh, yeah,
- 1:20:35Speaker 8: it's a sad, it's a sad time. Uh, it's a
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: remarkable also what that paper did produce from just from
- 1:20:40Speaker 8: a sports standpoint, the amount of great journalists, uh, and,
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: and writers. And it's just, it's, it's, it's sad, you know, uh,
- 1:20:47Speaker 8: I think it's sad what the Seattle Times has become.
- 1:20:49Speaker 8: Their sports section isn't nearly what it used to be. And,
- 1:20:54Speaker 8: you know, they've decided not to cover certain teams full-time. Basically,
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: the only thing they're covering full-time now is Seahawks football,
- 1:21:00Speaker 8: Mariner baseball, and Husky football.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:21:02Speaker 8: Nothing else is full-time. They're doing a thing with women's sports,
- 1:21:06Speaker 8: which is great. But they were already doing that. I'm
- 1:21:09Speaker 8: not sure how it's different. So, yeah, it's unfortunate.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: It's unfortunate. Thank you. How are the Kraken, 4-2, and–
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: Off to a really good start. Well, I think it
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: remains to be seen. They're better. They're better.
- 1:21:24Speaker 8: Yesterday was big. No one watched it. No one saw it.
- 1:21:26Speaker 8: We had a hell of a broadcast, I can tell
- 1:21:28Speaker 8: you that. But it was head-to-head with the Seahawks and
- 1:21:30Speaker 8: the 49ers. So, God, the NHL is so stupid. They're
- 1:21:34Speaker 8: just morons. Why they play on Sundays in the fall is.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: So you think they should just not play at all?
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: I just don't think they should play on Sundays. That's
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: They don't have any games on Sunday. I just think
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: you avoid Sundays.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: Yeah. If you play.
- 1:21:47Speaker 8: There's very few Friday games in the NHL. It's very odd.
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: So put them on Fridays.
- 1:21:51Speaker 8: Yeah, like, I mean, Kraken are going to play three
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: straight games on Seahawk days.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: Sunday.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: Thursday. Sunday, Thursday, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: They're better.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Lane's got them.
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: Their depth scoring is really good. All four lines are contributing.
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: Joey and Phillip have been good in goal, and they're
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: playing faster. They're playing tougher. Yesterday was a quality win.
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: People mock them. You know, my man, Andrews in the morning,
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: he's the most negative person I've ever seen with a
- 1:22:18Speaker 8: hockey team, but you know, well, their socks, they are awful.
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: They beat Calgary. That's it. Oh, whatever, man.
- 1:22:22Speaker 8: Sometimes you just need to enjoy games. Sometimes you just
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: need to enjoy the wins. I, you know, it was
- 1:22:27Speaker 8: a lost weekend along the way. Washington was 13, one
- 1:22:32Speaker 8: and two in their last 16 home games dating back
- 1:22:34Speaker 8: to last year. That's only their second regulation loss since
- 1:22:37Speaker 8: last January.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: So that's a quality win. That's a quality win.
- 1:22:41Speaker 8: Now you've got to pick it up and do it
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: tomorrow because you play a team that hasn't won yet
- 1:22:44Speaker 8: this year in Philadelphia. So don't let that go by
- 1:22:46Speaker 8: the wayside because the most cracking thing in the world
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: over the last few years has been, hey, nice win.
- 1:22:51Speaker 8: You beat Carolina. Then what happens the next game against
- 1:22:53Speaker 8: a bad team? So you've got to follow it up.
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: But they're getting better, and that's all you can ask.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: They're getting better. I'll ask you what I asked the
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: text line. What's your concern with the Seahawks if you
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: had to pick one?
- 1:23:03Speaker 8: Well, I think there's reason for concern. And I don't
- 1:23:09Speaker 8: want to say significant concern, but I think there's reason
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: for concern. Yes, they were 3-2 last year.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: We all know that.
- 1:23:16Speaker 8: But Sam Darnold is... There's a problem there.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: There just is.
- 1:23:21Speaker 8: The running back thing, you figure maybe it'll fix itself
- 1:23:24Speaker 8: when the two top guys come back.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: Can we trust that the number one pick's going to
- 1:23:28Speaker 8: ever be.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: He could be Rashad Penny.
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Yeah. And can we trust Sarbanes is going to come
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: back eight and a half months removed from reconstructive knee
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: surgery and just jump right onto the field and be
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: like he was last year?
- 1:23:41Speaker 8: I mean, I would think he'll be fine just because
- 1:23:43Speaker 8: you see all these guys coming back from ACLs now.
- 1:23:45Speaker 8: That one's less of a concern. Price, to me, is
- 1:23:47Speaker 8: a big concern. That's a big concern. That's a really
- 1:23:52Speaker 8: big concern, I think. I mean, the Seahawks have had
- 1:23:56Speaker 8: a couple of high draft picks at running back that
- 1:23:58Speaker 8: have not panned out. But you can't keep putting the
- 1:24:01Speaker 8: ball on the floor.
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: On the ground.
- 1:24:03Speaker 8: You can't keep, you can't keep throwing interceptions and you
- 1:24:05Speaker 8: probably shouldn't leave Josh Jill ball alone on Mike Evans
- 1:24:07Speaker 8: like he did.
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: And we talked about McDonald and that choice and yeah.
- 1:24:13Speaker 8: We talked about Friday with Greg Cosell. He, Greg said it.
- 1:24:16Speaker 8: He goes, that's, I would be concerned. And that's how,
- 1:24:18Speaker 8: but he goes, that's how they play defense and that's
- 1:24:20Speaker 8: what's going to happen. And boom, guess what?
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: That's what happened. That's right. And he stayed in that
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: way the whole time.
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: What do you have today?
- 1:24:25Speaker 8: We'll get to, we'll get into all that coming up.
- 1:24:27Speaker 8: We'll play Mike McDonald speaking at 1230. So we'll have
- 1:24:29Speaker 8: that for everybody. Weird week, obviously with the Thursday game.
- 1:24:31Speaker 8: So we'll hear from the head coach, see what's going
- 1:24:34Speaker 8: on a day later at 1230 today. And then Hugh Millen,
- 1:24:37Speaker 8: one o'clock hardcore football. Speaking of the TNT, TNT alum,
- 1:24:41Speaker 8: Mike Sandel is weekly visit coming up, taking.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: A tour of the NFL at 2 PM today.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: My guy.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: It's also great to me yesterday as well. Thanks to everybody.
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: Thanks for the well wishes on the text line and
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: on Twitter X and at the stadium yesterday and all
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: of that. I'm still here. I'm going to Denver for KJR.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: I'm going to write to the website. If I can
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: figure out the password for radio edit and write to
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: our website, that's where our stuff's going to be. That's
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: where you'll find my Seahawk coverage for the time. I've
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: got a couple things in the works I'm working on
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: to stay in Seahawk coverage.
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: That's what they call a radio pro to use.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I'm headed down to Renton right now to hear what
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: Mike McDonald has to say. Ian's up next. Thanks for listening.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: Thanks for Jess's dad being on 93.3 KJR FM.
