Transcript
- 0:00Tesla's sales in Europe dropped nearly 50% last month.
- 0:02But if Elon Musk continues to draw fire for political
- 0:05entanglements, will Tesla ever regain its standing with global
- 0:09consumers? So we're going to talk about
- 0:12Tesla's sharp fall of April 2025 European sales.
- 0:17Today, we're going to explore the impact of Elon Musk's
- 0:20involvement with the Trump administration and how it
- 0:22affected Tesla. And we're going to talk about
- 0:26the outdated line up and factory shutdowns that are affecting
- 0:29performance and examine how buyer sentiment is shifting in
- 0:34the electric vehicle market right now.
- 0:36So Tesla only sold 7261 cars across 32 European countries in
- 0:42April of 2025, compared to 14,228 a year earlier.
- 0:48That's a 49% drop. And it came even as the overall
- 0:52EV market in the region grew by 28%, according to European
- 0:56Automobile Manufacturers Association, or the ACEA.
- 1:00Now the contrast raises serious questions about why Tesla is
- 1:04shrinking while its competitors are growing.
- 1:07A protest against Elon Musk's are playing a key role.
- 1:10In the last few months, demonstrators have shown up at
- 1:12Tesla dealerships in several European cities calling for
- 1:15boycotts in response to Musk's work with the Department of
- 1:19Government Efficiency, or DOGE, under President Donald Trump.
- 1:23Now, the group has been criticized for massive federal
- 1:26workforce cuts and several lawsuits, and activists are
- 1:29targeting Tesla because of Musk's deep financial ties to
- 1:32the company. Now, Tesla's first quarter
- 1:35earnings missed Wall Street forecasts by a wide margin.
- 1:38The company's revenue dropped 9% and profit collapsed 71%.
- 1:44CEO Elon Musk blamed the numbers on a factory retooling process
- 1:48to update the Model Y, Tesla's top selling car.
- 1:51He said that factories were temporarily shut down to launch
- 1:54a refreshed version and added that the first quarter is the
- 1:57best time for such changes due to seasonally weaker demand.
- 2:01Now, April's sales suggest otherwise.
- 2:04Tesla's sales fell dramatically in many countries, with Sweden,
- 2:07Denmark and the Netherlands posting the steepest declines.
- 2:11In some of these markets, Tesla sales dropped as much as 80% of
- 2:15this happened, while competitors, especially Chinese
- 2:17automakers, saw sales climb. SAICA, Chinese company that owns
- 2:23the MG brand, recorded a 54% increase in April sales.
- 2:28European buyers are increasingly drawn to M GS cheaper electric
- 2:31models, which are seen as more affordable and more frequently
- 2:34updated than Tesla's offerings. Tesla's product lineup has
- 2:37barely changed in years, which is hurting its ability to
- 2:40compete with Chinese brands now. Tesla also had to shut down
- 2:44factories for several weeks this year to upgrade to the Model Y.
- 2:47While necessary, these shutdowns limited inventory during a time
- 2:51when demand was already cooling. Many buyers simply chose to look
- 2:56at other cars. European trade tensions with the
- 2:59US were also souring the market for American made vehicles.
- 3:03Donald Trump's threats to impose a 50% tariff on EU goods have
- 3:08further damaged Tesla's appeal in Europe.
- 3:10Though the tariffs have been delayed until July, they've
- 3:13already added friction to Tesla's presence in a region
- 3:16where political relationships influence buying habits.
- 3:20And year to date, Tesla's European sales fell about 39%,
- 3:24totaling 61,320 vehicles in the first four months of 2025.
- 3:29Over the same time period, the European car market remained
- 3:32flat, with battery electric sales rising and gas and diesel
- 3:36models declining. Tesla's drop stands out because
- 3:39it goes against the direction of the wider market.
- 3:42Now, Elon Musk insists that his political involvement is not
- 3:46affecting Tesla's brand. He questions how much buyers
- 3:50really care about CE OS political views, but organized
- 3:53protests and declining sales numbers suggest otherwise.
- 3:56Musk's alliance with controversial political figures
- 3:59is becoming harder to ignore for many customers.
- 4:03Now. Tesla's fall matters for anyone
- 4:05watching the EV market. If you're in the market for a
- 4:09vehicle for an EV especially, they have more choices now.
- 4:13And many are selecting brands that offer not just good
- 4:16technology but also a sense of neutrality or values alignment.
- 4:21Now, if Tesla and Elon Musk continue to lose trust of their
- 4:25customers and may not matter how good the cars are because people
- 4:31will buy a vehicle due to what Musk has done politically, the
- 4:36sales are falling for Tesla while other EV demands are
- 4:41growing. And these numbers suggest that
- 4:44Elon Musk's political image has done real damage to the Tesla
- 4:48brand.
