- 0:26your car and you left the door open. Somebody slipped inside. They're in there now.
- 0:31I didn't see anyone. I know that. Your back was turned.
- 0:38What are you doing standing outside my house? My husband's going to be back any minute.
- 0:45Music.
- 0:45Dr. Timmer's works nights.
- 0:49Oh, um.
- 0:55Are you a patient of Ted's? I heard them in the wall.
- 1:02And I came here and I saw someone. Just open the door. I'm trying to help you.
- 1:09Hey, welcome back to another episode of C.S. Frame. It's a bonus episode.
- 1:13Now, we did mention last podcast. Well, a couple podcasts behind this that we
- 1:18weren't going to do anymore horror for a while.
- 1:19And we are going to stick by that. But we lied.
- 1:23Yeah, we lied. But because we had a delay in getting something out,
- 1:27and I just saw recently saw this one I wanted to get one out because I wanted
- 1:32people to know about it this is a new this is a new one and it's very Hitchcockian
- 1:37kind of story so it is twists and turns so,
- 1:42if you don't want to know the twists and turns go fuck yourselves you're gonna
- 1:45listen to us anyway because we're gonna spoil them for you stay tuned anyway
- 1:48or or go watch it and then come back and listen to us,
- 1:54nah or just listen to us first or just listen to us anyway thank you so thank you so,
- 2:00Yeah, the movie is a film there in the south of Ireland, outside of Cork, I believe, Cork County.
- 2:07And it's written by newcomer Damian McCarthy.
- 2:11And he both wrote and directed this one. His first film he wrote and directed called Kavit.
- 2:17And it's about like a killer or a possessive doll buddy in this old house.
- 2:26It's pretty creepy. You would probably get a kick out of it,
- 2:28Trevor. I haven't seen it, but I've heard some decent reports about it.
- 2:33Is a doll like a rabbit or a herd or something?
- 2:36It's a hare, yeah, which actually has a cameo on this film. Yes.
- 2:41But, yeah, it's, I don't know if this is his thing, possessive dolls,
- 2:46because we've got a woodman in this one.
- 2:48And, but if it works, it works.
- 2:51I'm okay with it, because I'll tell you what, so far he's two for two in my
- 2:54eyes, and I'll go with it. He's really into self-isolation. Kavit took place in one house.
- 3:00This one, yes, you have some flashbacks, fast forwards here and there of some
- 3:05external areas, but the main area is going to be this country house.
- 3:12It's basically, in many ways, a haunted house story.
- 3:17Yeah, what I liked about it, it plays, oh God, and I'm honest, some great stuff.
- 3:25All the way from the haunting, to, I would say, probably rope,
- 3:31Hitchcock's rope. Yeah.
- 3:33Where it's who done it, why they did it, and his spirit's there to completely rest.
- 3:42A vengeful spirit, yes, type thing. I think as well there's a lot of other things
- 3:47going on here in terms of mythology.
- 3:51I would say he's borrowing a bit from Judaism, Jewish mythology,
- 3:57you know the whole golem sort of character,
- 4:00which is sort of resurrected, which we'll have here as the wooden man,
- 4:04and there's also a bit of witchcraft here as well and the whole sort of psychic stuff and even a bit of,
- 4:11as we've just discussed in the last podcast a bit of needful things you know,
- 4:16with the character who owns the antique store and stuff,
- 4:20and you know all of the items in it are cursed, that sort of thing be careful
- 4:24what you wish for Type thing.
- 4:26Yeah. It's kind of a ground bag of everything. Yes. I just like wood man.
- 4:30Yeah. Wood man's just fucking creepy. Yeah.
- 4:33Yeah, so we've got Danny, Darcy, Ivan, Bernie, Ted, Odin, and Yada, and the Wooden Man.
- 4:41Now, very simple cast.
- 4:44Very, very easy to follow. Pretty much follows Danny.
- 4:48She has a twin sister named Darcy. Danny is killed in the beginning of this
- 4:53film, the first 15 minutes or so.
- 4:56And the rest of it is Darcy trying to figure out what happened to her sister.
- 5:01And out for revenge herself as well.
- 5:04Yeah. And she's a blind clairvoyant. I would say as well, like the previous
- 5:08film we just reviewed, The Monkey, the twins are played by the same actor.
- 5:13Yeah? Oh, yeah, yeah. The sisters are played.
- 5:18Danny and Darcy are played by the same actor. Yeah, well, they're twins.
- 5:23Well, yeah. That would make sense, right? And they're never in the same scene because one's dead.
- 5:29Yes, obviously. although there is well we'll get to it anyway about Danny so
- 5:35the whole opening sequence is one of my favorites I mean it kind of plays in
- 5:41like three acts a lot like a stage play.
- 5:45And it can in the opening sequence it's so creepy and so well done,
- 5:52That you have this woman who is taking consistent pictures for her sister's
- 5:57sake of this flat that they're remodeling, her and her husband, Ted.
- 6:00And she's by herself while the husband's away working in an asylum.
- 6:04And she's fixing a trap door. The great thing about this beginning is the setup.
- 6:10And the setup places things that we are going to have to reference again soon.
- 6:15It's kind of blatant, but that's okay. The fixing a trap door,
- 6:18that will come into play.
- 6:20You've got the camera auto clicking anytime a movement happens yeah all these
- 6:25little tools that are in place will become an important,
- 6:31an important piece of evidence that Darcy or somebody else would need to see or witness and,
- 6:38the whole conversation when she's by herself in this quite frankly creepy little
- 6:44college by herself I don't know why you'd want to live here but.
- 6:48And there's This man knocks on her door and it's, it just, I won't give you
- 6:54the gist of it because I don't want to ruin it.
- 6:55If you are listening to this podcast, I think you got to listen to it because
- 6:59the guy who plays them does a really nice job.
- 7:02He's coming off very sincere. He's got a glass eye, which can kind of throw people off.
- 7:07And you know, it's also kind of a, a little misdirect because you could trust the guy with the glass.
- 7:13Exactly. Yes. He looks creepy.
- 7:15No offense to people with glass eyes, obviously, but that's the setup.
- 7:18Wow. Wow, what about poor people with glass eyes, make fun of Columbo?
- 7:22Make fun of Peter Columbo? I love Columbo, yeah, just one more thing.
- 7:26But yes, it's obviously set up here to make him look as though he may be the culprit.
- 7:31And whenever he's sort of trying to get into this woman's house,
- 7:33although he's trying to help her ultimately, the audience don't know that at
- 7:38this point, and neither does she.
- 7:40Yeah, so she's having this conversation with him. He's trying to tell her,
- 7:44you need to get out of the house, somebody's in there. and she wants to believe
- 7:49him, but she's obviously...
- 7:51She can't her nerves are saying i can't do
- 7:54this he's vulnerable it's very disturbing scene and
- 7:58what i love about it this whole opening sequence plays
- 8:01like when you're a kid you're raised on these old urban legends there's a film
- 8:05i love in the 70s called when a stranger called yeah it's a classic and yep
- 8:09and the whole thing's about why haven't you checked the children and it's so
- 8:14creepy so creepy oh my god the killer's in the house blah blah blah you gotta
- 8:18gotta check it It's really good.
- 8:20But it reminded me of all those classic tales.
- 8:23You got them even in Tales from the Crypt and the Vault of Terror did them all.
- 8:28And that's why this whole opening sequence plays in the first 13 minutes because
- 8:32she decides she's not going to open the door.
- 8:37Although we don't find that out until later on that she doesn't open the door. Yes.
- 8:41What happens is the, yeah, well, yes. But that's my point. It's the cutaway. Yes.
- 8:46She. Yeah. it's a really solid
- 8:5012 minutes it sucks you
- 8:53in now you want to know what has happened
- 8:56to daddy yeah and i would say as well right
- 8:59from the off i mean even even the setting of
- 9:02the house which appears to be some old converted mill
- 9:05or monastery or something just this whole atmosphere
- 9:09of isolation and there's
- 9:12like and this dread that comes along with it is very
- 9:15well done and you know although this is
- 9:18set in modern times the feel
- 9:22of this film feels like it's set in the 1950s or
- 9:25something despite even with the asylum more isolation just that grim sort of
- 9:30it just feels so old in terms of i mean whereas if you didn't see the mobile
- 9:36phones and the early scenes and the digital camera you'd be sort of thinking
- 9:41to yourself is this set in the 1950s and when is this set?
- 9:44Because there is that sort of just a dark and foreboding atmosphere that works very well.
- 9:51Yeah, no, it's all about setting, especially if you're using pretty much one
- 9:54location for the entire it's an old farmhouse.
- 9:57It's an old, uh, so they're, and yeah, I don't get why they move.
- 10:02It's just too Well, we'll find out maybe, well, maybe the doctor,
- 10:05I mean, we'll find out more about him as he plot progresses.
- 10:08Yeah, but he never tells you. I always wonder why they picked that place. Yeah.
- 10:12But it is the reason why he has to. Yes. Nothing. We'll get to it.
- 10:16But I do like the fact that we cut to the asylum real quick and we see a gentleman
- 10:21and his head is, well, we don't see a gentleman, but we see his head's all smashed in. Yes.
- 10:26And we zoom in and there's a glass eye in the middle of the goo. So we know this is Olin.
- 10:33Yes. So, we already know that Olin, who was trying to help her in the last scene, is dead, and...
- 10:42Why is he dead? Yeah. Yeah. So now we've got Darcy's death, Danny's death,
- 10:47and now we got to focus on Allman's death.
- 10:50These are all key elements to what's about to be played here. It's a chess game.
- 10:55Yeah. Always going to be a chess game. And in fact, they're actually playing
- 10:58chess later on in a scene.
- 11:00Yep. There's another movie that I compare it to. No, I'm probably dating myself
- 11:04and no one's ever seen it.
- 11:05Actually, two films, both starring Michael Caine, Sleuth. Yes. And Death Trap.
- 11:11Yeah. and I've seen yeah again I believe stage plays originally so yeah,
- 11:18so if you're into those kind of things now the first yeah the first half pretty much straight,
- 11:26Hitchcockian De Palma-esque kind of thriller but then it turns the great thing
- 11:32about Oddity is that you never know what you're going to get and then it does
- 11:36go hard that here is a thing I'm going to bring up I do have to admit But as soon as the doctor,
- 11:44we find out that the doctor has a new woman after,
- 11:48not long after his wife's death,
- 11:51straight away, I did catch it. Hear me.
- 11:53He's fucking behind it. You know? Oh, yeah. But, you know, I don't think it's really a whodunit.
- 11:59No, it's not a whodunit. Not an Agatha Christie whodunit or a Columbo whodunit.
- 12:03It's how it was done. Yes. And how they're going to get their cluppets.
- 12:07But straight away, as soon as I found out. It's almost like a Columbo.
- 12:11In the Columbo, you already know who did it.
- 12:14You just got to figure out how Columbo is going to figure it out. Yes.
- 12:17Yeah, because pretty much once you find out that the doctor has a new woman
- 12:22almost straight away, it's just like, yeah, he did it. You know?
- 12:26Yeah. And you knew right away, Darcy...
- 12:29She's a blind clairvoyant. You know, her being blind, any time,
- 12:32they use your senses more. They're other senses.
- 12:35Yeah. To adapt. So she's not stupid. She knows exactly what's fucking going on.
- 12:40Well, she also does the thing where she gets a hold of the stuff from,
- 12:47you know, the murder scene.
- 12:48And she does her whole feeling them and sort of sensing what happened.
- 12:52So yes, she knows what happened.
- 12:53She seems... I do think it's funny that the doctor, Ted, played by Ted,
- 12:57the husband, who's a fucking dumbass, by the way.
- 13:00Why would you give your clairvoyant sister-in-law the eye of the man who supposedly killed your sister?
- 13:11Why would you give her any type of evidence, just in case he's clairvoyant?
- 13:15Because he doesn't believe, he's a doctor.
- 13:18He's a man of science. He even states it. He's a man of science,
- 13:21and he states it several times, how all of this.
- 13:24Superstitious nonsense is indeed nonsense and he's
- 13:27a man of logic and science and he will in no
- 13:30way in the world buy into the supernatural
- 13:33so that's why so he felt that he had basically nothing to worry about in in
- 13:40that case and in fact that's his character arc in many ways where he goes from
- 13:45being a complete non-believer to basically being a murderous molder by the end of it you know,
- 13:53Yeah, he gets his comeuppance and more ways than one.
- 13:56Yeah, I mean, that comeuppance is the best. Again, more plants you ever see,
- 14:00like I mentioned, the trap door.
- 14:02She tells a story of the bellhop. Yes. And this bell was haunted.
- 14:10All she's doing is telling him a story of her trinkets. All of her trinkets
- 14:13have a story. They have a curse to them.
- 14:16Leetful things, yeah. I would love to visit this shop. But anyways.
- 14:21So any time you ring this bell, that bellhop will come and kill you. Yeah.
- 14:26Yeah. And so the ghost, yeah. So he sees, he's laughing, really,
- 14:32severing the bell, you know, playing with her and stuff like that,
- 14:34being, you know, kind of a condescending prick.
- 14:36Yeah. And then that story's left.
- 14:39We don't, we don't care about it. I mean, we move on.
- 14:41But this is where she goes into that, she goes into that back room after he
- 14:45leaves and she goes to that back room. You see the case where the wooden man is going to be.
- 14:49And there's this wall. And if you see this wall, they're toys.
- 14:53And that's where you see the could be rabbit or hair, the doll. You even see the monkey.
- 14:59It looks like the monkey shines, but it's the cymbals, not the drums.
- 15:02Yes. It's a different monkey, obviously.
- 15:05Yeah. So it's a little homage to some of the classics he's probably seen growing up. So...
- 15:13That whole sequence, again, is just pretty much an introduction that Ted's a twat. Yes.
- 15:19And now Darcy's had enough, and she's going to figure out what's going on.
- 15:22So she just invites herself over at this point. And this is where we meet Yana, the dipshit.
- 15:27Well, she's not even... Now... She's quite sort of unlikable as well.
- 15:31So she is. And very sort of past remarkable. And, you know, yeah.
- 15:36She's set up well. And actually acted quite well by the actress,
- 15:40who looks very like Kate Winslet, a young Kate Winslet.
- 15:44Hello you there you know what shut up
- 15:47of all your fucking
- 15:51comparisons which are
- 15:54terrible by the way literally fucking terrible
- 15:58ray charles can pick better comparisons i
- 16:02have a say i have that i said she looked like kate wind so
- 16:06i've been proof right once once
- 16:10yeah oh well you know
- 16:13thank you thank you so you know i agree
- 16:16that tom skirt looks like tom atkins and yeah go fuck
- 16:19yourself and catherine hicks looks like amanda weiss jesus
- 16:23christ yeah you're cool it's not amanda weiss it is from nightmare on street
- 16:28one is that not her name i can't remember well listen i'm giving you i'm giving
- 16:35you a pass that is like i always think the light has to has to shine on a dog's ass someday.
- 16:43You should have a dog's ass. Yeah, there you go. There you go.
- 16:47You're welcome. That's pretty nice of me. You're a papoon's arse.
- 16:53So, I love when Yana's playing with the camera.
- 16:57Yeah. And she's like, look, I found your eyes camera. Well, it's been a year.
- 17:03I mean, you're just playing with that now. I never get that.
- 17:06You figured she would have saw some of these photos a long time ago.
- 17:08So I wasn't really I wasn't sure of the move-in date here. Yeah.
- 17:14Well, the fact that Yana is just quite content to move in with her lover,
- 17:19who's been her lover, so that we'll find out since obviously before Danny died, was murdered.
- 17:25But the fact that she just casually moves into a dead woman's house,
- 17:29takes her place, and is just fucking about with her camera, just makes her even more unlikable.
- 17:35You know, just in this sort of blasé sort of manner, you know,
- 17:39as if, you know, it's water off a duck's back.
- 17:42She's pretty unlikable. They both are, actually.
- 17:45Yeah, but that's what I kind of like about what happens to Yana. Yes.
- 17:50Which is nothing. Well, she sort of gets off the hook. So she does, by the end of it.
- 17:55Well, no, that's what I liked about it, because Danny, the woman who died,
- 18:01saves her life. I know that, yeah.
- 18:04Yeah. She pretty much tells her to get out. Yeah.
- 18:08But so Darcy shows up with the trunk with the wooden man. This fucking thing's
- 18:13awesome. I want one of these.
- 18:16And she starts telling the story about how a witch gave her parents something
- 18:24made out of wood for their fifth anniversary.
- 18:27Because wood, fifth anniversary is, well, fifth anniversary for a wedding is
- 18:32wood. Yeah. Hence, the wooden man.
- 18:35Kind of an odd choice to give somebody, but- That's witches for you.
- 18:39You know? Those damn witches.
- 18:41Wood, trees. You probably got a hard-on right there. I got word.
- 18:46Yeah, I bet you did, you fucking sick fuck. And you're probably going,
- 18:49God, I hope there's naked old people in this. So excited.
- 18:52No naked old people, unfortunately. You know?
- 18:56Yeah. But you can't have it all. You know?
- 19:01So the whole time, when she takes- the one man's in the box and they're just
- 19:05looking down in the box. We don't really know what's in there as of yet.
- 19:08You know, we put the piece together pretty quick and Yana is just walking around doing a thing.
- 19:15And then Yana comes out and the one man is seeing the table.
- 19:17He's like, who, who, who put them there?
- 19:20And Darcy's just like, I don't know. So playing with her. Yeah.
- 19:25Oh yeah, totally. I mean, she's totally playing with her.
- 19:27The great thing about the wood man, they're saying so fucking creepy.
- 19:31It's the movement. she doesn't make that are scary because when he gets to point
- 19:36A to point B, oh sorry, point A to point C there's no B. We don't see it.
- 19:40Yes. Yeah, you think that's a cheat, but it works. Well, there's one scene where
- 19:43Yana looks down and he's sitting in one position and then when she looks again,
- 19:49she drops her phone and then looks again and he's like looking up at her but
- 19:52you don't see the in-between, like you say, the B point.
- 19:55Yeah. And that's what works and that's why she drops her phone,
- 19:58scares the fuck out of her.
- 19:59Yes. A concern of mine was that when wooden
- 20:02man was obviously going to come to life that it
- 20:05would become a bit cheesy and a
- 20:08bit sort of b-movie-esque which totally
- 20:11which is fine in and of itself but it totally would have ruined the tone and
- 20:16atmosphere of this film but they do pull it off just about i think and it's
- 20:21i would have liked to have seen less of them when he comes comes alive but what
- 20:25we do get is is very well done and they do pull it off I think.
- 20:30The dialogue between Yana and.
- 20:35And Darcy's quite good. It's a very intense scene in terms of- There's a scene
- 20:39where she goes, Yana makes a comment, I wouldn't have left these.
- 20:44They all think Olin killed.
- 20:46That's why the case is closed. Yes. And Darcy knows that's not true.
- 20:50So Yana makes a comment, I would never let him in. That's a stupid thing to do.
- 20:54Yeah. And she goes, let me ask you something, Yana. Am I stupid? No, you're not stupid.
- 20:59Well, my sister- We were identical? My sister looked just like me. She's my twin.
- 21:04Does she look stupid? no and then
- 21:07she says all they didn't do this it's a it's a very well i
- 21:10mean overall the acting's brilliant but this scene in particular is
- 21:14very well done and it's a very tense back and forward so it is and at this point
- 21:18you the audience know without it being explicitly stated that darcy has all
- 21:22the cards here or is basically in control of the chess game and she is basically
- 21:29she knows exactly what's happened.
- 21:32Yeah. Even though we'll find out that she has made a mistake earlier by killing Olin.
- 21:38She was the one who killed Olin. Yeah, I know.
- 21:41She admits that. Yes. And she goes, I will pay for that. And she knows she's
- 21:46going to die. She does pay for it. Yeah.
- 21:49So this is where, when she tells her, when they have these battle the witch,
- 21:54I guess she can say, when she's pretty much dominating that cat and mouse really,
- 21:59We get a flashback, and this scene is just heartbreaking and terrifying at the same time.
- 22:04We see this poor woman is somebody in this house, and she's in this tent.
- 22:12I don't know why she isolates herself in the tent.
- 22:15No, I think with the tent, it's because they were still moving into the house,
- 22:19so they hadn't proper beds yet.
- 22:21So they had this tent set up in the house to sleep in, you know,
- 22:24with sleeping bags and stuff.
- 22:26No, but do you hear what I said? Yes. go
- 22:29ahead why would you pick to go into a little tent when
- 22:32you got a whole house there because i don't think they had
- 22:35beds in it yet and it was like my god oh my god she dude listen genius okay
- 22:41let's hold on i'll give you time that's where she was sleeping she was sleeping
- 22:45in the tent let me finish please she's not going to bed but she's hiding away
- 22:49so why would you pick a little tent.
- 22:54With one exit and one entrance, would you have a whole house you can kind of
- 22:59scope around and kind of get the feel of and see if there's someone else in the house?
- 23:03Why would you put yourself in such an isolated spot?
- 23:08If you say she wants to go to fucking bed, I swear to God.
- 23:12No, no, not because she wants to go to bed, but I would actually go even further
- 23:15and say, if this situation was happening to most people in the real world,
- 23:20they would actually run out the back door or try and get some help in some way,
- 23:25not go into a cupboard or into a tent or any of those places.
- 23:29I think the problem is she was vulnerable. She was scared that if she went outside,
- 23:34Olin would be waiting for her.
- 23:35If she stayed inside, at least she has the whole field to manage.
- 23:38But you don't go into a fucking tent.
- 23:41But anyways, she does go into a tent, and then she hears something,
- 23:44and then she unzips the tent. It's so cool. And then the white mask just pops up.
- 23:49And we don't see anything, but it's very well done,
- 23:53where he walks into the tent with his weapon of choice, a hammer,
- 23:56I think it is, and he walks, he goes into the tent and it cuts to,
- 24:01he's all bloodied, we see the innards of the tent bloodied, but we don't see her,
- 24:05and that's her death, that's how we see it.
- 24:07It is extremely, the violence is very minimal here.
- 24:11It's more about atmosphere and dread than it is anything else. It's very well handled.
- 24:17We see the before and then And the aftermath, it's brilliant and it's very,
- 24:22very creepy, especially his get up, which is basically a boiler suit and this
- 24:27extremely creepy, like sort of porcelain or stone mask.
- 24:32And then it's just very well done where we know what's going to happen,
- 24:35but then it cuts away and we'll see the aftermath.
- 24:38Yeah, and this is where we find out Ivan. We meet Ivan, who's an orderly.
- 24:42He's the one who pretty much, we figure out right away.
- 24:45Yes, he does. We figure out, at this point, we know Ivan and Ted are the guilty
- 24:49parties. Yes, Ivan's done it on behalf of Ted.
- 24:53Yeah, and we find out where all it was picked on by Ivan and the way he treated him.
- 24:57And he overhears the conversation because his room is right next to Ted's office.
- 25:01So he can hear Ivan planning the, and Ted planning her death.
- 25:07And he makes the comment why not why not just fucking leave her and he's right
- 25:11why not he goes I have two months all my money is invested in this house I have no choice.
- 25:18Yeah she'll get it all yeah at that point so he has no choice yeah,
- 25:24now I do like the voodoo aspect it was a witch that gave the one man to her family,
- 25:32yes and the one man has these holes in his head
- 25:34like bowling ball yes and each one
- 25:37has something one would be a picture of of the
- 25:40two girls when they're young a vial of blood a
- 25:43lock of her a tooth yes stuff like
- 25:45that something relating to what's about to happen
- 25:48it's kind of like a voodoo or almost like a voodoo doll yeah
- 25:52it's very which well it's like a giant voodoo doll but also with
- 25:55the the witchcraft element of you know
- 25:57like personal possessions or like a lock of her of people who you're looking
- 26:02to to avenge or get revenge on so yeah like I say he's sort of the director
- 26:09and writer he's sort of you know sort of pinching bits of different sort of
- 26:13mythologies and stuff but it works here.
- 26:16The scene where Danny is going to warn Yana.
- 26:21Yeah. Which I liked because it gives the character a lot more weight,
- 26:24how vulnerable and kind this woman was that was taken so abruptly and so cruelly.
- 26:29Yes. She won't even let Yana take
- 26:32the hit, even though she's the one who technically broke up the marriage.
- 26:36Which is basically a good ghost as opposed to a vengeful spirit. A good ghost.
- 26:40Yeah. She's Casper. That wood man. Now when the wood man comes.
- 26:44But anyways, so we've got, Yeah, so she's going through the camera,
- 26:49and she plays this video.
- 26:53And the video is of Danny and Ted in the tent, and they're talking.
- 26:57And she watches the same video again. I was like, why are they showing this
- 27:01again? But this time, Ted turns into the dead corpse of Danny.
- 27:04And so she panics. Then you see Danny in the corner of her room.
- 27:08She runs out of the bedroom.
- 27:10Things are starting to pick up a little bit. She hears some banging at the crate
- 27:13where the woodman was placed.
- 27:15She opens up the crate. There are her car keys. She's able to go.
- 27:19She's able to get out of there. She's been seeing it. That whole thing was planned by Danny.
- 27:22Yes. So, and there's a great shot. And it's almost, it reminded me of the others. Very, uh.
- 27:30Uh, Victorian maybe I want to use. Very, uh, anyways.
- 27:35It is done when she runs out and the whole place is dark. It's fucking like
- 27:38two o'clock in the morning, I say.
- 27:40Everything's black. And you just see the, the, the border of the,
- 27:43of the door into the house.
- 27:44And that's all black inside. and all of a sudden she comes to light the ghost
- 27:47of Danny and she's got the white eyes and the pale face it's shadowy, it's terrifying,
- 27:54it's so well done, it's so creepy also the scene in the bedroom did remind me
- 27:59of a similar very effective scene in Hereditary you know in the bedroom with
- 28:06Tony Collette, I know you didn't like the ending Hereditary,
- 28:09I'm not talking about the ending but it also did remind me of that and it works
- 28:13very well here too Thank you.
- 28:15I can't remember Heroditary that much. I haven't seen it since I saw it.
- 28:18Yeah. Yeah, a lot of Heroditary's positives were a lot of good jump scares.
- 28:23Well, that's what I was going to say. You know, you get a lot of people,
- 28:27myself included, who have criticized jump scares, but when done right,
- 28:32and where they actually forward the plot and aren't just cheap and thrown in for the sake of it.
- 28:37As in the case here, they actually work very well.
- 28:41Like we'll get here with other things. It's not like a cat coming through a
- 28:45window. It's not cheap. No.
- 28:47No. Yeah. Exactly. There's a point to them here, and they work.
- 28:51So, Ted comes back. Yep. He finds out Jan is gone.
- 28:57So now it's pretty much him and Darcy.
- 29:00And Darcy... Ivan, you mean not Ted?
- 29:04Ted sends Ivan? No. No. Dude, don't interrupt me.
- 29:10I can fucking interrupt you if I want to. You fucking idiot. You fucking idiot.
- 29:15If you let me finish as I'm hosting, you would let you know Ivan does come into
- 29:20play, but can I finish why he comes into play?
- 29:22For the love of Jesus, our Lord, please, can I finish this? Go ahead. Continue.
- 29:26Because when Ivan sees her through the trap door falling on the ground,
- 29:29who do you think sets that trap up?
- 29:31The trap that was done by the good ghost. So it was. Oh, my God.
- 29:37Oh, my God. You're clueless. Oh, no. Sorry. That's done by Ted.
- 29:39Sorry. That's done by Ted. Yes. Oh, Barry. Sorry. Sorry. He sees the light. Sorry.
- 29:44Sorry. I take that back.
- 29:46I will admit when I'm wrong. I've only seen this film once just yesterday before recording this.
- 29:51Yes, Ted sets that up with the trap. So he does. Yes, he does.
- 29:54So what Ted does, like I said in the beginning, he's got that floor. Yeah.
- 30:00Okay, you're still jumping in. If there's anything else you want to not add,
- 30:03that's wrong. Go ahead. Bastard.
- 30:09Chill out. So Ted...
- 30:12So don't fucking, Jesus Christ. I'm waiting for you to go, hey,
- 30:15this is when Spider-Man shows up, isn't it?
- 30:18Bell and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Oh, fucking hell.
- 30:23Oh, my God. I got a cold and now him. I've got an ear infection.
- 30:27What do you think? So Darcy, so Darcy is on the, you know, near the,
- 30:33she's on the top floor now.
- 30:35Yeah. And she's pretty much telling him, which I don't know why you would do
- 30:40it, but she thinks she's holding all the cards.
- 30:42She thinks she has him at this point but ted's quite convincing i'll give him
- 30:47that but he tells darcy i didn't do this so this is what i'm going to do i'm
- 30:52going to leave my phone right over here,
- 30:54pick up this phone when i call i'm going down to the police precinct i'm gonna
- 30:57have a detective give you a call on this phone you need to pick up the phone
- 31:01please don't do this and it's the one time where Darcy is a little vulnerable.
- 31:09Where she's like... Let your guard down? Jesus.
- 31:13Do I? Yeah. She lets your guard down. Just that one second. So he leaves.
- 31:18When time passes, the phone rings. But what she doesn't realize is Ted has lifted
- 31:24the trap door open and when she walks to get the phone, she falls through. Return.
- 31:29Terrible. I felt so sorry for her. Well, even more so whenever Ivan does arrive,
- 31:35and she's laying there broken and he's like taunting her. I mean, he's a psychopath.
- 31:39And it also turns out, which is actually makes a lot of sense too,
- 31:42that Ted actually plucked him.
- 31:44He was a former patient, a psychopathic patient at the asylum.
- 31:48But yes, whenever he comes and finds her laying there, it's pretty rough to
- 31:51watch. Her life's ebbing away from her.
- 31:54When they had that conversation, Ted and Darcy. Yes. That's not bad,
- 32:01pretty much the closing arguments.
- 32:03She goes, and she's great. She's very good in this.
- 32:07All she says to him is, all you had to do is say, I'm sorry.
- 32:12I don't love you anymore.
- 32:14And I met somebody else. Yeah. And she would have walked away.
- 32:19There would have been tears, but she would have moved on.
- 32:23But instead, you killed her. It's a great little line where it sums up that
- 32:30this guy's just an evil prick.
- 32:31Yeah. Basically, he's a sociopath, whereas Ivan's a psychopath.
- 32:36Yeah. And it actually makes a lot of sense because, you know,
- 32:39a lot of psychopaths and sociopaths are actually medical professionals,
- 32:45apparently, according to, you know, statistics.
- 32:47You know, because it's a whole plain God thing, you know, which that profession
- 32:53apparently seems to invite. Yeah.
- 32:55So when Ivan shows up to clean up the mess, pretty much what Ted was telling
- 33:00Ivan to go clean up the mess, he shows up and there she is on the floor and
- 33:04she's pretty much dead, but she's still, she's still hanging on there.
- 33:08And her last thing is we are both connected. We are both connected.
- 33:11She gets the wood man to come up and do her, you know, do what needs to be done with Ivan.
- 33:18Yes. And this whole sequence of him being chased by a wood man,
- 33:22you figure it'd be like very funny because he's slow.
- 33:25But the way they manipulate him, they lock all the doors. So if he goes upstairs
- 33:29and tries to go to the back door, he can't.
- 33:31No matter what, he's going to have to face the woodman. And the woodman's just
- 33:34taking his time, coming up the stairs. And you can hear the creepiness.
- 33:38Like when he goes down the stairs, and then you see the woodman,
- 33:40he's no longer in the table, and his head moves down the stairs,
- 33:43and there's a woodman looking up from down the stairs. It's so creepy.
- 33:47And then you hear him walking up the stairs as he's walking the other's way.
- 33:52And the whole thing is just so effective.
- 33:55Until, obviously, he has to jump and he gets a compound fracture.
- 33:58Well, it goes back to the whole slow-moving zombies and how Frankenstein's monster,
- 34:04how they always catch up with them in the end.
- 34:07But here, I wasn't worried of mine that it was going to, with the wood man coming
- 34:11alive, it was going to be cheesy and ruin the atmosphere and tone of this film.
- 34:15But they pull it off and you just, maybe a little too much you see of the wood
- 34:19man whenever he's alive.
- 34:21I would have liked to have seen less, but they do, It does work, and it's very sinister.
- 34:25And what's great about it, I just caught this in my fourth viewing. I've seen it.
- 34:30I don't know why I didn't catch it. The wood man is going to crush his head,
- 34:35but the reason he doesn't finish the job is because Darcy dies.
- 34:41Yeah. I didn't catch that because they were both connected. And once he died,
- 34:46he couldn't finish his job.
- 34:47So he's pretty much just laying there holding Ivan's head.
- 34:51And that's why Ivan is still alive in the hospital, where Ted obviously is going
- 34:55to. Well, what Darcy's saying, we're both connected, we're both connected,
- 35:00that has a double meaning to her sister, who was murdered.
- 35:03But also, as we find out with the woodman, it's a double meaning.
- 35:08What is it? Sorry, what? What Darcy says, we're both connected,
- 35:11that has a double meaning.
- 35:13It could mean that we're both connected, as in her and Danny,
- 35:16but also her and the woodman.
- 35:19Oh, yeah, yeah. But she was always connected with Danny, really.
- 35:22Yes, yes. Well, she says it earlier on to Yana, but it takes on a different
- 35:27context later on whenever she's laying down.
- 35:30And you think maybe she's talking about Danny still, but Danny's actually a
- 35:33good ghost, and she's not looking a good ghost.
- 35:36She's looking badass woodman, who she's also connected to. Yeah,
- 35:39that's why she brings the woodman.
- 35:42Yeah. Because otherwise the ghost would just take all the killing.
- 35:44Yeah. That's the problem.
- 35:45But because she's a good soul and a good spirit, And technically, so is Darcy.
- 35:51Somebody has to do a job, and that's what the woodman's for.
- 35:53He's the hitman. Yeah, yeah. Just like Ivan's also the hitman for Ted.
- 35:58Yeah. I do love, we know Ivan gets his clump, and we won't go into details of
- 36:03it, but the ending's the best.
- 36:06Yeah. It is so fun. Ted goes in. There's a pack is waiting for him at the door.
- 36:11Everybody's dead. He's moved on. He's like, fine. Yana wants nothing to do with him.
- 36:16He's moved on. And he gets his little package. He opens up the little package
- 36:20and it's the bellboy bell. Yes.
- 36:22And he, because he's such an arrogant prick. And like you said,
- 36:26he's a doctor of science first.
- 36:27Yeah. He rings the bell and it's like a couple, a few minutes long. He's looking around.
- 36:33We're all like, a couple of, a couple of weaknesses and cricks. Yeah.
- 36:37Yeah. The little things you hear, like you would hear in the house,
- 36:40which get the shit out of you at this point, but he's taking it all,
- 36:43you know, he's, he's, he's doesn't, doesn't bother him at all.
- 36:47And at the end, he looks around, he chuckles, and then we quickly cut to the
- 36:53right side of him, and the dead bellboy is like, yeah, yeah.
- 36:58So creepy. Yeah, I do love that he is hesitant about, you know,
- 37:01before he hits the bell, and he sort of, you know, and then he is a bit nervous,
- 37:04but then he laughs. He says, oh, this is nonsense, I'm a doctor.
- 37:07He doesn't say it explicitly, but that's what he's laughing, you know.
- 37:10That's what basically he's saying, you know, that this is all nonsense,
- 37:13but then you see the bellboy. Yeah.
- 37:16What a wonderful ending. And it's sad that Darcy had to meet her ends.
- 37:26But at the end, the white people got it. She said she would pay for it anyway,
- 37:28and she had to pay for it for killing Olin.
- 37:31The only real, true, innocent characters here are, well, the wife, you know, and also Olin.
- 37:40And Olin didn't kill anybody. Exactly.
- 37:43The only reason he's in the hospital is because I mean it's more depressing
- 37:46he killed his mother because she used to beat the shit out of him and he finally
- 37:51lost it apparently there's a short film,
- 37:54played by the same actor where you find out how Olin lost his eye but it was
- 37:58filmed years ago so apparently this guy's short films and his feature film here
- 38:02are all connected set in the same universe so apparently there is a short film
- 38:07out there where you find out about that,
- 38:09I just bought the blu-ray it hasn't come yet so I might actually see if that's
- 38:12on there yeah it could very well be it might even be on YouTube It'd be interesting.
- 38:17Yeah, guys, this is a wonderful film. Absolutely wonderful. It's very good.
- 38:20Everyone needs to see it.
- 38:22It goes back to the classic movies like The Haunting, all the way to Hitchcock,
- 38:26as we mentioned, Rear Window and Rope and all these films.
- 38:29And it's got its own elements of horror to it. Even the little goth horrors
- 38:33in there, Victorian horror, the others.
- 38:36It's just a nice blend of everything with its own touch, like it should be done.
- 38:42Great atmosphere in acting as well. So it also, it also, it also reminded me
- 38:46of a little film like Ty West did called The Innkeepers. Yeah.
- 38:52That is a very familiar feel to it. If you like The Innkeepers,
- 38:54you really enjoy this film. You need to check it out. And I can't wait to see what this guy does next.
- 38:59It's very, very good with a great tone and atmosphere.
- 39:04And yeah, very well handled. Really impressive.
- 39:08There you go, guys. The Oddity, nice pleasant surprise for you horror fans out there. Go check it out.
- 39:13We're going to retire from horror for a while. I promise. This is it. This is it.
- 39:18We're doing Stephen King's It next? No, no, no. We're doing Gladiator 1 and
- 39:232. We're going to do a couple westerns.
- 39:27And sad note, obviously the great, great, great, great, great Gene Hackman has passed away.
- 39:33And we're going to definitely be tackling some of his best works.
- 39:37Preferably, probably looking at the Poseidon Adventure, French Connection,
- 39:41maybe Unforgiven, Hoosiers, Crimson Tide. I mean, I could keep going.
- 39:46I mean. Yep. Guys. The Quicken the Dead, he's in as well.
- 39:50Yeah. Anything we touch, we can, yeah, that's right. He was. Superman.
- 39:54So, Superman. Ah, that's right. Lex Luthor. The best Lex Luthor for me. On screen anyway.
- 40:01Always will be. Yep. But yeah, we'll post more soon.
- 40:06Listen, guys, give us a shout out. at citizenframe on the square podcast and
- 40:09Instagram and of course Facebook.
- 40:11We're going to wrap this one up. Go see the oddity. It's worth it.
- 40:15Take care of yourselves.
- 40:18Music.
