- 0:01As the curtain of human history nears its final drop, God and
- 0:09His profound kindness will raise up two powerful preachers to be
- 0:16some of the clearest and loudest witnesses to the world before
- 0:23Christ returns in judgment. That is not to say that there
- 0:28will be no other Christian evangelists or missionaries in
- 0:30the Tribulation period. But the Holy Spirit highlights
- 0:34these two distinct individuals because of their extraordinary
- 0:39influence and impact in that time.
- 0:43And for the Holy Spirit to single them out in this way is a
- 0:46thrilling invitation for us to examine them more carefully.
- 0:50And in doing so, I trust and I pray that we will learn some
- 0:55valuable things for our own witness as followers of Christ
- 1:00today. Moreover, we will definitely
- 1:05understand the One who will one day summon these two preaching
- 1:10powerhouses as an extension of His grace and wisdom.
- 1:18And there are at least five things that I want us to
- 1:20consider and take note of regarding these two prophets in
- 1:26Revelation Chapter 11. The first thing that we will
- 1:29look at is their identity. Who are these messengers
- 1:34exactly? We will from there look at their
- 1:39ability, because not only are they preachers, they are
- 1:44prophets with incredible power and it's difficult to ignore
- 1:49what they are able to do and what that means for them, for
- 1:53their generation and even for us, their identity, their
- 1:57ability. Thirdly, we will be confronted
- 2:00with their mortality. As phenomenal as these preachers
- 2:05are, they are human, and we are told about their death and the
- 2:10manner of it, and it is very revealing from their mortality.
- 2:16We will fourthly look at their indignity, the opposite of
- 2:21dignity. Now why is that an appropriate
- 2:23word? Well, we are told in detail of
- 2:27the great humiliation they will experience, the mistreatment,
- 2:32the dishonor by their global audience, and finally, we will
- 2:40meditate on their testimony, the overall impact of their
- 2:44ministry, and what that means for us as well.
- 2:48Let's begin by reading Revelation 11/3 and four as we
- 2:53meditate on their identity. And I will grant authority to my
- 2:592 witnesses and they will prophecy for 1260 days clothed
- 3:06in sackcloth. These are the 2 olive trees and
- 3:09the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.
- 3:14Pray with me, Father, the study of Your Word has been done, but
- 3:27Lord, the delivery requires just as much of Your help, and we
- 3:33pray that Your blessing would rest upon these truths being
- 3:38expounded and delivered to the hearts of Your people.
- 3:44And Lord, we come with hunger and expectation, believing that
- 3:51Your Word will be sweet to our mouths.
- 3:53And even if it is bitter in our stomachs, we accept it because
- 3:56we trust that even this portion of Scripture will nourish us and
- 4:02it will strengthen our fellowship with Christ and it
- 4:06will help us advance in holiness and it will, by your grace, make
- 4:11us better witnesses. For your name's sake.
- 4:16In Jesus name we pray these things.
- 4:19Amen. The identity of these witnesses,
- 4:23it's strange, we're never given their names.
- 4:27And that has led many to believe that these two witnesses are
- 4:32actually symbolic representations and not
- 4:36individuals at all. And some would say that these
- 4:42two witnesses are actually just a picture of the church's
- 4:46witness in the last days. Others prefer to say, no, no,
- 4:51what you have here is actually a picture of the powerful work of
- 4:56the Old and the New Testament. Others would disagree and say,
- 5:00no, it's, it's actually more acceptable to conclude that this
- 5:05is what the law and the prophets will do to a generation of
- 5:10unbelievers who refuse to believe all of that.
- 5:15Any kind of symbolism you would attribute to these two witnesses
- 5:18is very, very, very difficult to sustain because we haven't read
- 5:23it yet. But we're going to see that
- 5:26there are behaviours and we read it.
- 5:29There is actually clothing that they wear, sackcloth, and
- 5:32there's going to be a real death that these two witnesses will
- 5:35undergo. And just their overall destiny
- 5:40dispels any notion that these are some kind of just imagery or
- 5:45some kind of picture or symbol of something other than two real
- 5:50human beings. What you and I have here are two
- 5:54actual people that God will use in His end time program.
- 5:59Now, among those who hold that view, there is friendly
- 6:02discussion. OK, they are real human beings,
- 6:04but who are they exactly? This is the stuff that some
- 6:08people here like to talk about during lunch, after the service.
- 6:11Who are they exactly? 1 popular view is that because
- 6:17of the characteristics attributed to them, as we're
- 6:19going to see, they have to be somebody like Moses or Elijah.
- 6:24In fact, let's read verse 5 and 6.
- 6:25Let's get ahead of ourselves. Just for a moment.
- 6:28Let's look at this and if anyone would harm them, fire pours from
- 6:33their mouth and consumes their foes.
- 6:36If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be
- 6:38killed. They have the power to shut the
- 6:41sky that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying,
- 6:44and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood
- 6:48and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as
- 6:52they desire. This is strikingly resembling of
- 6:57what the ministry of Moses and Elijah and that's why many are
- 7:00comfortable to interpret these witnesses as a reappearance of
- 7:04these mighty men of God. And they would add to that to
- 7:06say, well, doesn't Malachi say that before the day of the Lord
- 7:09Elijah will appear? Good point.
- 7:13Others would also include there's a a group of Jews that
- 7:16also claim that Moses will make a reappearance and I won't get
- 7:19into the reasons why they hold to that view.
- 7:21So this duo being those two mighty prophets is something
- 7:26that people think is is very fitting.
- 7:29Now there are others who would say not Moses and Elijah, but
- 7:31but it's more likely that it's going to be Enoch and Elijah.
- 7:36Now why is that? Because they are the only two in
- 7:38all of the Bible that have departed from this world without
- 7:41experiencing death. And Hebrews 927 is often quoted
- 7:45to support this view, where it says that it is appointed for a
- 7:48man to die once, and then comes what judgement?
- 7:51And so it makes sense then that you have these two prophets
- 7:55making a reappearance, ministering, undergoing death
- 7:58like the rest of us, and experiencing their own
- 8:01resurrection. Well, there are strengths and
- 8:05weaknesses to those views, but unless it is clearly stated, we
- 8:09can't say with absolute certainty that these witnesses
- 8:12are the reappearance of well known men, of God, of the past.
- 8:16What is clear though, as much as that might be possible, the
- 8:21reasonable interpretation is that these are unknown servants
- 8:24of Christ that God will one day recruit and empower to be mighty
- 8:31voices to speak to a generation that desperately needs this
- 8:35demonstration of supernatural power.
- 8:41With that being said, there is one clear reference to the Old
- 8:43Testament and we read it. I'm not sure if you saw it, but
- 8:46look again at verse 4. These are the 2 olive trees and
- 8:50the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.
- 8:54So you can debate if this is Moses, Elijah, Enoch.
- 8:57What you can't debate is that this verse is clearly drawn from
- 9:01a vision in the book of Zechariah.
- 9:05This is going to help us understand a little bit more
- 9:07about their identity. Zechariah was a prophet during
- 9:12the days of the Exiles who returned from Babylon, came back
- 9:15to the city of Jerusalem, and attempted to rebuild the temple.
- 9:19And he was used by God for many reasons.
- 9:21But one of his purposes was to infuse grace and encouragement
- 9:26to this remnant as they face many difficulties and challenges
- 9:30in their desire their endeavor to resurrect this House of
- 9:34worship. And in the midst of these
- 9:37obstacles, God gives Zechariah a vision to share with the leaders
- 9:42and the people so that they would know a new grace to see
- 9:47this actually fulfilled. This is worth turning to in
- 9:51Zechariah. So find the book of Zechariah
- 9:54and meet me in chapter 4 and look at verse one with me.
- 9:59Zechariah 4 verse one reads And the Angel who talked with me
- 10:04came again and woke me like a man who is awakened out of his
- 10:08sleep. And he said to me, what do you
- 10:11see? I said, I see.
- 10:14And behold, A lampstand all of gold, with a bowl on the top of
- 10:19it and seven lamps on it, with seven lips on each of the lamps
- 10:24that are on the top of it. And there are two olive trees by
- 10:28it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.
- 10:32So I can't draw this for you, but I'll attempt to use my hands
- 10:35to make it a little bit more clear.
- 10:37Here's what the prophet sees. He sees this golden lampstand
- 10:42and a bowl on top of it and these two olive trees on both
- 10:46sides. And what's happening here is
- 10:48that these olive trees are feeding oil into the bowl, and
- 10:52then this bowl is then trickling oil into the lamps of this
- 10:56lampstand. That's the picture.
- 10:59But what's the meaning? Zechariah wants to know.
- 11:02So look at verse 4. And I said to the Angel who
- 11:05talked with me, what are these, my Lord?
- 11:08And the Angel who talked with me answered and said to me, do you
- 11:11not know what these are? I said No, my Lord.
- 11:14Then he said to me, This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel,
- 11:18not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of
- 11:22hosts, Who are you, O great mountain, before it's ruble?
- 11:25You shall become a plane, and he shall bring forward the top
- 11:28stone amid shouts of grace, Grace to it.
- 11:33So the Angel gives Zechariah the general interpretation of this
- 11:38vision, and here's what it is. The completion of the temple
- 11:42will be realized, and it's not going to be through human
- 11:48diligence or man's strength. It's going to be attributed to
- 11:53the energizing work of the Holy Spirit.
- 11:56It's going to be God himself energizing his people and
- 11:59providentially making a way for this to be done.
- 12:03But more than that, whatever Zerubbabel began with the
- 12:07Temple, because he was one of the leaders who led this
- 12:10project, he will see through to completion, which will result in
- 12:15what? The life and the light of the
- 12:20nation of Israel being reignited and abundantly sustained.
- 12:26That's what you have here. And Zechariah understood the
- 12:29broader message, but he is curious, and so he begins to
- 12:34probe and ask about certain details.
- 12:36And what really he wanted to know was what about these olive
- 12:39trees? And so Scroll down here to verse
- 12:4211 of Zechariah 4. Then I said to him, what are
- 12:48these two olive trees on the right and the left of the
- 12:50lampstand? And a second time I answered and
- 12:53said to him, what are these two branches of the olive trees
- 12:57which are beside the 2 golden pipes from which the golden oil
- 13:01is poured out? Can you pause for a moment?
- 13:04Do you notice how many questions Zechariah is asking?
- 13:08That's for your instruction and mine.
- 13:10Here's a man who is beholding visions from God and he doesn't
- 13:15understand. So what does he do?
- 13:17He asks and when he doesn't get an answer, he asks again.
- 13:22He keeps asking, can I ask you something?
- 13:24When you don't understand something in the Word of God,
- 13:26how desperate are you to know it?
- 13:29How much investigation do you do?
- 13:33Or are you just content with seeing it, closing your Bible,
- 13:35saying why? At least I did my part.
- 13:37I read. Revelation does not come to
- 13:42readers, it comes to thinkers. And for those who meditate and
- 13:46take what they see and bring it before the Lord in prayer,
- 13:49that's where they get illumination.
- 13:51Here's this man, He's not giving up easily.
- 13:55Even in the verses we just read, He asked the question.
- 13:57He didn't get an answer immediately.
- 13:58So what does he do? He asks again, ask, seek, and
- 14:02God will give you answers. He doesn't in many ways, but you
- 14:06and I have to do our part and seek Him.
- 14:09Verse 13 He said to me, do you not know what these are?
- 14:13I said no, my Lord. Verse 14 Then he said, these are
- 14:18the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
- 14:23Does that sound familiar? You should.
- 14:25We read in Revelation 11 something very similar
- 14:29contextually. The two anointed ones in this
- 14:32vision are representation of two people, Zerubbabel, the man that
- 14:37we read of earlier and Joshua, Zerubbabel and Joshua the high
- 14:43priest of this time. Now why them?
- 14:46For two simple reasons. Number one, these were the two
- 14:50that God raised up to lead the Exiles to go back home and start
- 14:54the rebuilding of the temple. They oversaw this endeavor.
- 14:58And secondly, Zerubbabel and Joshua both came from lineages
- 15:03that experienced and required anointing oil.
- 15:08Zerubbabel was a political leader.
- 15:10He was the governor of this time, but he came from the royal
- 15:13line of David. Were kings anointed in the Old
- 15:15Testament? They were anointed.
- 15:17Joshua, who worked alongside Zerubbel, came from the priestly
- 15:20line. Were priests anointed?
- 15:22They were. Then.
- 15:24It would make sense then for these two to be the anointed
- 15:26ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
- 15:29Now here's how this interpretation adds to the whole
- 15:32vision. As much as the life and the
- 15:37light of the nation of Israel will be reignited by the Holy
- 15:41Spirit's work, it will be channelled through the agency of
- 15:46these leaders. These leaders will be God's
- 15:50instruments of bringing in God's favor, God's blessing on the
- 15:56nation, surviving and thriving again.
- 16:02And this is precisely why the Holy Spirit connects these two
- 16:05witnesses in Revelation 11 with this description and Zechariah.
- 16:10Not only because these two witnesses will be supernaturally
- 16:13empowered by God, but because they will play significant role
- 16:20in the restoration of the people of Israel during a time of
- 16:25renewed persecution in a world under the control of the
- 16:27Antichrist. In the same way that Zerubbabel
- 16:31and Joshua were used by God to help the Exiles who are harassed
- 16:35by the enemies of their time. Go back to Revelation 11.
- 16:39Let me remind you of something in verse 2.
- 16:41In verse 2 of Revelation 11, we learned that the holy city is
- 16:45going to be trampled for 42 months, right?
- 16:48That speaks of persecution against the holy city, that is
- 16:52Jerusalem and its people. But in verse 3, we read that
- 16:55these two witnesses will be preaching for the same length of
- 16:58time. So the duration is given in
- 17:01days, and we're going to see how the impact of these two
- 17:07witnesses will have on the people of Israel by the end of
- 17:10the message. But before we move on, allow me
- 17:13to say one more thing. I find it amazing that the
- 17:17length of the preaching of these two witnesses was only 1260
- 17:21days. To put into perspective, we just
- 17:26at the time of this message, pass our four fourth year
- 17:29anniversary as a church. That's not very long in terms of
- 17:33a preaching resume. And these men will be preaching
- 17:37for 3 1/2 years. And it's a helpful reminder
- 17:43about how God sovereignly works in our ministries.
- 17:48Each of us in His mind, the length and the duration of our
- 17:53service to Him varies. It varies, and quantity does not
- 17:57always mean quality. These men will do profound
- 18:01things in a short amount of time.
- 18:03And listen, you and I should strive.
- 18:05Strive for longevity and loyalty wherever God has placed us to
- 18:09serve. But we also must be dependent
- 18:12upon the truth that He is the one who determines what we do
- 18:17and how long we do it for. This is His prerogative, and
- 18:22what makes the quality of your service to God and mine
- 18:26meaningful and lasting is the same thing with Zerubbabel,
- 18:29Joshua, and these two witnesses. Dependence on the Holy Spirit
- 18:34being connected to Him, continually asking for His hand
- 18:38to remain on your life and to bless your efforts and to
- 18:41multiply your fruit. Can I ask you, O precious Saints
- 18:44who serve God, how much? How much do you seek God to
- 18:48bless what you do for God? How much are you aware?
- 18:51How much are you? Are you, are you understanding
- 18:54of your neediness of Him? So what we see here is that the
- 18:58picture from old to new is that men and women who have done
- 19:01great things for God are those who are aware that they need
- 19:05Him, They need to abide in Him, That unless He goes before them
- 19:10and is by their side and behind them and over them, they will
- 19:12not know true success. And this is what we find here,
- 19:17that the Holy Spirit will work through these men not just to do
- 19:20miracles, but to play a part in the people of Israel coming
- 19:25closer to their salvation. That being said, they do
- 19:30accomplish remarkable things, which brings us to our second
- 19:34heading. Not just their identity, but
- 19:36their ability. So like the fire that fell from
- 19:40heaven and consumed Elijah's enemies by command, by the way,
- 19:45we see these men doing something similar.
- 19:49And like Elijah, who according to James prayed and for 3 1/2
- 19:54years there was no rain, these men apparently can shut the sky
- 20:00by their word. And I find it interesting.
- 20:04It's for the same duration that Elijah did, 3 1/2 years.
- 20:07And what about the water turning to blood and plagues striking
- 20:12the earth? That is a clear parallel to
- 20:16Moses. So what do we do with these
- 20:20parallels? What do we do with these
- 20:21connections? Here's the key take away.
- 20:25Just as the miracles of Elijah and Moses vindicated their
- 20:31message in times of great apostasy and oppression by
- 20:36empires, these witnesses will have comparable power.
- 20:41In other words, you're going to see here that these signs and
- 20:44wonders mirror these prophets of God of old, to authenticate the
- 20:49ministry of these men, to show to the world that they are
- 20:53genuine prophets of God. And this will be extremely
- 20:56useful in a time where there will be terrifying distractions,
- 21:01palpable demonic activity, and frightening deception on all
- 21:07sides. This kind of power that we read
- 21:09in verse 5 and 6 is necessary and it will show the world that
- 21:16these these prophets, they resemble the prophets of the
- 21:19Hebrew Scriptures. Therefore they represent the
- 21:20true God. And that is an indirect message.
- 21:23But we got to think about the practical implications of this.
- 21:26You've been with us week after week.
- 21:27Is the world in a good place at the time of these ministers
- 21:30preaching? Everything is falling apart,
- 21:33diseases and waters being corrupted and land being
- 21:36destroyed and things falling from the sky.
- 21:38And and with all of that, what do you have?
- 21:41Two men, whenever they desire, adding to their suffering,
- 21:48adding to their turmoil. And it's really going to show us
- 21:54why the world hated these guys. They make sense because of the
- 21:59torment they will inflict, not just by the truth that they
- 22:02preach, but even by the power that they will demonstrate.
- 22:07But there is a phrase, the last part of verse 6, that caught my
- 22:10attention and moved me deeply. Look at it again.
- 22:13As often as they desire, they will have the ability to perform
- 22:22any of these powerful acts whenever they wish and as many
- 22:24times as they want. That is incredible.
- 22:31That is staggering, and here's why it's intriguing.
- 22:35Much of Revelation, including this section, shows how God has
- 22:39carefully fixed and planned events.
- 22:43Down to what? The very hour the holy city will
- 22:47be trampled for 42 months? These two witnesses will preach
- 22:50for 1260 days. Later on, in the same section,
- 22:53we're going to see that an earthquake is going to Sheikh
- 22:55Jerusalem and a tenth of the city fell.
- 22:57That is precise, undeniable, sovereign acts of God.
- 23:06And yet in the in the middle of this, just witnessing the
- 23:10absolute control that God has over the affairs of the world in
- 23:14the final days, you get a hint that man is granted freedom of
- 23:20choice as often as they desired. This reminds me actually of
- 23:27another place concerning the last days, namely with Jesus
- 23:32Christ when He gave His own play by play prophecy of the final
- 23:37moments of human history. Let me remind you of this.
- 23:39In Matthew 2419 and 20, our Lord said, and alas, for women who
- 23:47are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those
- 23:50days, look at verse 20. Talking Matthew 2419 and 20,
- 23:55Look at verse 20. Pray that your flight may not be
- 23:59in winter or on a Sabbath, for then there will be great
- 24:04tribulation. Such has not been from the
- 24:06beginning of the world until now.
- 24:08No, and never will be. Pray.
- 24:10Pray for what? We'll pray that the conditions
- 24:14will be favorable in your travels.
- 24:17Pray that it will not happen where there will be traffic
- 24:20jams. And so Jesus here even indicates
- 24:27that prayer can still make a difference even in the context
- 24:35of predetermined events and elements of it being
- 24:40established. Do you see what I see?
- 24:46So here's what I want to say. You and I may not be able to
- 24:48fully understand how this all works, but one thing is certain.
- 24:50God's foreknowledge does not make our freedom an illusion.
- 24:56Our freedom is real, our actions or our inactions actually make a
- 25:01difference, and all of this makes our relationship with God
- 25:05what authentic and it makes our responsibility very genuine and
- 25:12personal as often as they desire.
- 25:16I love that thought as it's sandwiched between what days
- 25:20determined and events taking place.
- 25:24God's foreknowledge does not negate your responsibility.
- 25:29My brother and sister Jesus equally says pray, pray.
- 25:35Prayer makes a difference. Well preacher, can you explain
- 25:37all the mechanics? I can't do you much service in
- 25:40that area. But what I do understand is that
- 25:44God has asked of me to do certain things and I will obey
- 25:48Him, believing with all my heart that should I not do it, it will
- 25:51actually change or not change their ability.
- 25:58But let's consider their mortality.
- 25:59Now we haven't read this yet, but let's look at it in verse 7.
- 26:04And when they had finished their testimony, the beast that rises
- 26:11from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer
- 26:15them and kill them and their dead bodies will lie in the
- 26:20street of the great city That symbolically now the Greek there
- 26:24were for symbolically is actually spiritually, that's
- 26:28symbolically slash spiritually. It's called Sodom in Egypt where
- 26:32their Lord was crucified. This is the first time in the
- 26:37Book of Revelation, the words the beast that title this
- 26:42individual, the beast appears the first time.
- 26:47But reference to the Beast will actually resurface nearly 30
- 26:52times in the rest of the Book of Revelation.
- 26:55So obviously whoever the Beast is, he is an integral part in
- 27:01the events of the Last days. And all we know up to this point
- 27:04in his introduction is where he came from.
- 27:07The Beast came from the Abyss. We were here when we learned
- 27:12about the Abyss. This is in reference to the
- 27:15underworld where certain demonic spirits were imprisoned by God
- 27:19himself. This has then LED some to say,
- 27:22well the beast has to clearly be a demonic creature or even Satan
- 27:27himself. Is Satan appearing before these
- 27:29two witnesses and slaying these two witnesses?
- 27:33Well it's not until you continue Revelation where you discover
- 27:36who the beast actually is. More light is shed on this
- 27:39character. So look at Revelation 13.
- 27:42Just to give you an example how this is going to help us.
- 27:47Revelation 13 Look at verse one, John says.
- 27:52And I saw a beast rising out of the sea with 10 horns and seven
- 27:56heads, with 10 diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on
- 28:00its heads. And the beast that I saw was
- 28:02like a leopard. Its feet were like a bear's, and
- 28:05its mouth was like a lion's mouth.
- 28:07And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great
- 28:13authority. One of its heads seemed to have
- 28:16a mortal wound, but it's mortal wound was healed and the whole
- 28:20earth marveled as they followed the beast.
- 28:25It's very tempting to go deep into this passage, but we're
- 28:28going to refrain from doing so and look at just two simple
- 28:30observations about the beast number.
- 28:33We know based on this passage that the Beast is not Satan.
- 28:37Why? Because contextually, the dragon
- 28:41is Satan, and he empowers the Beast.
- 28:44That's clear. More than that, though, there is
- 28:47strong indication that the beast is actually flesh and blood.
- 28:53Why? Because John says that he he saw
- 28:55a mortal wound that the beast had and the wound was was
- 28:58healed. Well, some would say that this
- 29:01is reserved just for a symbolic picture of an empire falling and
- 29:04rising again. But if you continue Revelation
- 29:0613, which we will when we get there, there's great support
- 29:10about how this beast is actually an individual.
- 29:14And if that is the case, then there is something that will
- 29:16happen to this beast that will affect his body.
- 29:19It will be healed almost in a miraculous fashion that will
- 29:23even cause the world to devote themselves more ferociously and
- 29:28intensely to the beast. This leaves us with only one
- 29:33logical conclusion, that the beast is the Antichrist, that he
- 29:37is the prophesied coming world ruler that Jesus spoke about,
- 29:42that Paul spoke of, and it's given out in great detail in
- 29:45this marvelous book, Revelation. This is the Antichrist.
- 29:48And So what does it mean for us in Revelation 11?
- 29:52That the Antichrist will be the one who will personally deal
- 29:56with these two witnesses, that their message and their movement
- 30:02will be so enraging to him that he will deal with them with a
- 30:07devastating blow. You have to remember, Paul
- 30:11prophesied that in the last days one of the turning points would
- 30:15be the man of lawlessness entering into the temple of God
- 30:20and declaring himself to be God as he takes his seat there.
- 30:24Where's the temple of God? Jerusalem.
- 30:27And it could be that these two witnesses who are prophesying in
- 30:33the holy city, in the great city, are getting in the way of
- 30:37the Antichrist sustaining his headquarters in Jerusalem.
- 30:44They're not making his job easier as he is trying to win
- 30:46the worship of the world. Here they are preaching about
- 30:49the true Christ. Here they are preaching with
- 30:51power, interfering with his attempt to dominate the globe.
- 30:58And so finally, he will take action, but not until what Their
- 31:05testimony was complete. Don't you love that truth?
- 31:10I love it because it shows that even the Antichrist who is
- 31:16empowered by Satan will not be able to touch any of Christ's
- 31:22witnesses until he says so. Let's take it, take a breath
- 31:28now, OK? What is this truth show about
- 31:32our life in Christ? It shows that our existence on
- 31:38earth is tied to our service to the Lord.
- 31:44They could not be touched until their ministry was accomplished.
- 31:51And once their ministry was fulfilled, God allowed them to
- 31:56be killed. What does that say about life?
- 32:03Life is about living for Him. Life is about serving God.
- 32:09Life is about discovering your ministry.
- 32:11And even though if you don't have a clearview of what your
- 32:13calling is, and I put that in quotation marks, just knowing
- 32:17what God's will is from His Word and finding a place and a people
- 32:20to do it with, that's what your life is about.
- 32:25And I wonder if we think of it that way.
- 32:28I wonder if you think about your life that way.
- 32:32Paul did. Do you remember what he said to
- 32:35the Philippians and Philippians 122?
- 32:38If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for
- 32:43me. What is he saying to the
- 32:46Philippians? Well, he's in prison.
- 32:48There's talks about him potentially dying, being
- 32:51martyred, and he's wrestling with, departing and being with
- 32:54Christ for that is far better. Amen.
- 32:56It is far better. But then he realizes that I only
- 32:58have one opportunity to serve God in a way that I can't in
- 33:03heaven. And so the only compelling thing
- 33:07for me to remain in this body, battered in bruises, succumb to
- 33:11all these things and to stay on this wretched planet is if I am
- 33:16fruitful for him. There is no other appeal from
- 33:21this world apart from that truth serving him.
- 33:27And that's what we find here. These men were taken once.
- 33:32They served well. Speaking of thinking a certain
- 33:35way, did you notice a contrast in these verses?
- 33:37Look again at verse 8 and their bodies, their dead bodies will
- 33:42lie in the street of the great city.
- 33:44That's worth highlighting. The great city that
- 33:48symbolically, or again I told you earlier, the Greek word is
- 33:51spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where their Lord is
- 33:56crucified or was crucified. So in case there's any confusion
- 34:00of what this great city is there, there's no more debate
- 34:03now. It's it's Jerusalem.
- 34:04That's where our Christ was crucified and Jerusalem here for
- 34:08some reason it's called the great city.
- 34:13Whatever the reasons are for it being called great, they're not
- 34:16godly ones. Do you know why?
- 34:19Because in the very same breath, this city is condemned by being
- 34:26titled two of some of the worst cities in all of biblical
- 34:31history. And so in God's eyes, Jerusalem
- 34:37at this point is bankrupt. But in worldly terms, it's
- 34:44great. Here's how this challenged me in
- 34:52my perception of everything around me.
- 34:56Do I discern and evaluate spiritually, or am I prone to do
- 35:00so in my flesh? What's great in the eyes of the
- 35:05world, symbolically and spiritually, is horrendous to
- 35:11God. You know, some of you know that
- 35:14my wife and I had a chance to go to Rome just a few weeks ago,
- 35:19and there was so much about Rome that was great.
- 35:23The historical preservation, the architectural beauty was
- 35:26stunning. But throughout our stay there, I
- 35:30had to constantly remind myself to perceive these things from a
- 35:35spiritual standpoint and to make my final estimation there,
- 35:40especially when looking at these religious structures.
- 35:47Great. But spiritually, what is it?
- 35:52You know, there are a lot of Christians who are passionate,
- 35:55sometimes too passionate about politics.
- 35:57If they fail to consider the spiritual reality behind it,
- 36:00it's never in the conversation. It's just left and right and
- 36:05this news and that is, do you perceive it spiritually, though?
- 36:11You have others Christians who are enthralled by certain forms
- 36:13of entertainment but never reflect on the spiritual
- 36:15influences at work. You know Christ has something
- 36:20profound in light of this. When He was dealing with the
- 36:23self-righteous Pharisees in Luke 1614, He said, For what is
- 36:29exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
- 36:33Let me say that again, For what is exalted among men is an
- 36:37abomination in the sight of God. Well let me read you the whole
- 36:41verse. And he said to them in Luke
- 36:431615, You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God
- 36:49knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is
- 36:51an abomination in the sight of God.
- 36:53Why is he saying this? Because in the verse right
- 36:55before it, we learned that the Pharisees were lovers of money
- 37:01and they justified it. In fact, they actually convinced
- 37:04people that their growing wealth was a sign of God's favor.
- 37:11And Jesus reminds them and us, your value system, Pharisees,
- 37:17that might be praised, you might have excused it and convince
- 37:21others of it, but in God's sight it's an abomination.
- 37:30You and I have to constantly come before the Lord and ask Him
- 37:35to sharpen our perception the way we understand the world, how
- 37:40it functions, what is valuable, what is not, what is to be
- 37:43treasured, what is to be despised, what is to be pursued,
- 37:47what is to be ignored. Because your default setting and
- 37:51mine is not to see it spiritually, it's to see it
- 37:55carnally. It's to see the the way the rest
- 37:58of the world does. And the closer you get to God,
- 38:02the more you will see the way he sees the city of Jerusalem.
- 38:08Great. Oh, but to God spiritually,
- 38:10Sodom and Egypt, this is striking and it carries
- 38:16instruction for us. We still have two more thoughts
- 38:19to consider. We moved out from their
- 38:21mortality to their indignity. Not their dignity, their
- 38:25indignity. Look at verse 9.
- 38:27Now, for 3 1/2 days, some from the peoples and tribes and
- 38:34languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse
- 38:40to let them be placed in a tomb. And those who dwell on the earth
- 38:45will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents,
- 38:50because these two prophets have been a torment to those who
- 38:53dwell on the earth. This is a fascinating passage in
- 38:58a book that's primarily about the future, because what would
- 39:05have been unexplainable to John's immediate audience up to
- 39:09roughly 70 years ago, it's very understandable to us today.
- 39:15How could the peoples and tribes and languages and nations of the
- 39:18world gaze upon the dead bodies of these two prophets for 3 1/2
- 39:24days in one specific location? Is that hard to imagine today?
- 39:30Absolutely not. These slain bodies of these
- 39:32prophets will be so significant that it will be broadcasted.
- 39:38That's the only explanation for this.
- 39:39It will be broadcasted live on streaming platforms across the
- 39:42world, and not from an objective journalistic standpoint.
- 39:47No, no, no, no. It will be recorded as a
- 39:50celebratory event. They're they're gone.
- 39:55Finally, we don't have to watch another sermon short.
- 39:58We don't have to deal with another plague in these random
- 40:01cities. We have better chances to have
- 40:03drinking water. They're done.
- 40:09And so exciting will this news be that they will actually go to
- 40:13the stores, purchase presents, visit their friends and
- 40:17neighbors, and exchange gifts. Someone called this passage a
- 40:22Satanic Christmas. That's very fitting.
- 40:29You you can't think of another way, I'm sure, of trying to
- 40:33explain the joy of these peoples, the inhabitants of the
- 40:38earth, over the death of two righteous men who are calling a
- 40:41dying and collapsing world to repentance and eternal life.
- 40:49And this may be just a few short years ago, might have been also
- 40:52unthinkable to us. But I can't help but think about
- 40:55the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk and understand that
- 40:59we got a sobering reality check of just how vile people can be
- 41:06at the sight of a man who had his neck blown up by a bullet in
- 41:10front of people, including his family.
- 41:17More shockingly, this is the first time the word rejoice
- 41:23appears in the Book of Revelation.
- 41:26The only other occurrences in Revelation 19, seven where we
- 41:29read of the righteous celebrating, rejoicing, exalting
- 41:34in God in the marriage supper of the Lamb.
- 41:39Imagine this. How staggering is this?
- 41:41You're reading through the Book of Revelation and the first time
- 41:43you are confronted with the word rejoice on earth.
- 41:47Rejoicing on earth is when sinners are gleeful about the
- 41:52assassination of two of God's chief workmen.
- 41:59Let me take this opportunity to remind you and I that we live in
- 42:01a very wicked and depraved world.
- 42:04And listen. It has always hated the truth.
- 42:07It has always attempted to run from the light.
- 42:09But that hatred for the truth will intensify, and those who
- 42:13speak it will also be objects of people's hatred.
- 42:18So if you're despised, dear brother or sister, do not be
- 42:22surprised. It's only going to get more
- 42:26intense. The fate of these prophets isn't
- 42:32too surprising, though, is it? How many times have we read both
- 42:35an Old and New Testament of God's faithful messengers being
- 42:39killed, sometimes in the prime of their lives?
- 42:43But what we discover in our final heading is most definitely
- 42:47not common. Let's discover now their
- 42:49testimony in verse 11 down to verse 14.
- 42:56But after the 3 1/2 days of breath of life from God entered
- 43:00them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on
- 43:05those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice
- 43:08from heaven saying to them, come up here.
- 43:11And they went up to heaven in the cloud, and their enemies
- 43:13watch them. At the hour there was a great
- 43:16earthquake and a tent of the city fell. 7000 people were
- 43:20killed in the earthquake and the rest were terrified and gave
- 43:24glory to the God of heaven. I sat back and I use my
- 43:33sanctified imagination at this point of my study that if indeed
- 43:40it will be modern technology that will be able to allow the
- 43:45world to look at these slain bodies for 3 1/2 days.
- 43:50Maybe, just maybe, again, sanctified imagination that
- 43:54while cameras are rolling and people are posting breaking news
- 43:58alert, this is not AI footage. Suddenly, unexplainably,
- 44:06miraculously, these two witnesses are alive again.
- 44:13You can just imagine the replays of these two slain bodies
- 44:16suddenly getting up to their feet and dusting their
- 44:20sackcloth. This is incredible.
- 44:28But in a book with so many miracles, not just Revelation,
- 44:30but our entire book, the Bible, this is not so hard to imagine.
- 44:36In fact, many, many years before this, there was another faithful
- 44:42witness, the Witness of Witnesses, Christ himself, who
- 44:48ministered in Jerusalem. And he too was killed.
- 44:51And he was buried for three days before he was resurrected.
- 44:57And now we read here of the Messiah's two witnesses who also
- 45:02minister in Jerusalem. They will be killed.
- 45:04They will be slain, though not buried for 3 1/2 days before
- 45:09they are resurrected. But here's the main difference.
- 45:14Their resurrection and essentially will be seen by the
- 45:17entire world. Even their enemies will behold
- 45:23this remarkable reversal of events.
- 45:28Why? Why is the Lord doing this?
- 45:31Why is He making it so public? Well, surely to vindicate His
- 45:34witnesses, but also to extend undeserved mercy to this
- 45:41generation as they are accelerating and racing towards
- 45:46eternal doom. This is God again in His great
- 45:51grace, allowing this world at this point to actually see
- 45:58resurrection and ascension to validate their message even
- 46:04more. Things are wrapping up as much
- 46:09as the judgments are increasing in intensity.
- 46:12So at this point is God's grace and trying to get the attention
- 46:17of these unbelievers. So instead of trying to wrestle
- 46:23with why and why them and just see God's mercy, just look at
- 46:30His wonderful grace and be moved by it.
- 46:34How much more can He do to awaken a generation that is
- 46:38inundated by so much filth and so much carnage and so much
- 46:43evil? And what happens?
- 46:49Well, if that wasn't enough, the Lord will cause an earthquake to
- 46:52shake the city of Jerusalem to confirm that what it just
- 46:55transpired was His doing. 7000 will perish as a tent of the
- 46:59city will collapse. But notice again in verse 13.
- 47:03Look at it. The rest were terrified and gave
- 47:06glory to the God of heaven. Who are the rest?
- 47:11Well, the thing that makes the most sense here is that they are
- 47:16the rest of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
- 47:18Contextually, that's what makes the most sense.
- 47:21And what does it mean then that they gave glory to the God of
- 47:25heaven? Is this a forced confession, or
- 47:29is this genuine repentance? And there's debate about that.
- 47:34And you can actually make a strong case that this is real
- 47:39because whenever you see giving glory to God in the context of
- 47:42revelation, it is strongly associated with genuine
- 47:46repentance. And we don't have time to look
- 47:49at every reference, but we will as we move forward in this text.
- 47:54But let's just step out of this for a second.
- 47:56Whether this means that they genuinely repented or this is
- 48:00just a spontaneous, sudden kind of response of recognizing that
- 48:05God is actually real, one thing is absolutely certain.
- 48:10The testimony of these men will bring the people of Israel that
- 48:16much closer to their destiny, and that is them acknowledging
- 48:22Christ as their true Messiah. That is the impact of these men.
- 48:27We're seeing what Paul taught about in Romans 11 coming to
- 48:30fruition more and more. We saw it with 144,000.
- 48:34We see it with these two witnesses who very likely were
- 48:36Jews themselves. And as they are brought into the
- 48:41clouds, there is something that we rarely see happening in this
- 48:45book. Sinners giving God glory.
- 48:50And not just sinners across the board, but sinners in a
- 48:54particular city, A city that is called holy, a city that's
- 48:57called great. A city that spiritually is not
- 49:00pleasing to God, but because of His covenant towards them is
- 49:04doing His part to lead them to His pleasing will.
- 49:08Let me remind you as I close now, that what we've discussed
- 49:11in these past few weeks is the pause and the interlude between
- 49:17the 6th and the 7th trumpets. Next week, God permitting, we
- 49:22will look at the 7th trumpet and we will move that much closer to
- 49:26the end of the end. Let's pray.
- 49:49Oh Lord, your word is wonderful. How even in a text like this
- 49:57that is often cited as a platform of debate, has become
- 50:03our nourishment. We received instruction from it,
- 50:08and we glorify you for that. We thank you, Lord, that this
- 50:13has provided some clarity in our understanding of the last days,
- 50:17but we're, Lord, even more thankful that you were able to
- 50:20make it so relatable to us because Your word is designed to
- 50:23do so. So speak to our hearts, God.
- 50:29Speak to our hearts with these words, and maybe they echo in
- 50:33our hearts throughout this week. Lord, if anybody is here and
- 50:38they don't know you, we pray that you would use even this to
- 50:43awaken them to the saving love of Christ and that they would
- 50:47not waste a moment. They would bend their knee and
- 50:50realizing I was made for God and I was separated from Him, but he
- 50:55redeemed me and he built the bridge again and I can know him.
- 50:59I pray, Lord, with my brothers and sisters, that that would be
- 51:02that would be a testimony for the unbeliever in this place.
- 51:07For those of us who know you, Lord, we pray that you would
- 51:10sharpen our perception that we would see things the way you do,
- 51:13including our own lives. I pray Lord that you would
- 51:18energize each of us in our service to You because that's
- 51:22where life is, worshipping you and serving you.
- 51:26Before we meet you, we glorify you and we sing Your praises.
- 51:29Now in Jesus name we pray. Amen.
