- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern. And let's jump into today's
- 0:12quote from an unknown person from the tech world who once
- 0:17said, if you haven't backed up your work, you haven't done any.
- 0:21Think about that for a second. You haven't done any work.
- 0:25Sounds harsh, but it's true. You can spend 10 hours writing a
- 0:29document, but if your computer crashes and you didn't save it,
- 0:33you have 0 hours of work. Not ten hours.
- 0:37Zero. You can spend months building a
- 0:39business, but if you don't protect your contracts, your
- 0:42files, your data, you have nothing.
- 0:45One hard drive failure and it's gone.
- 0:48The work you did doesn't matter if you can't prove it existed.
- 0:51This quote comes from the painful reality of technology.
- 0:56Every programmer, every writer, every designer has learned this
- 1:01lesson the hard way. You lose something important
- 1:04once, and you never forget to back it up again.
- 1:08But here's what's interesting. This principle extends way
- 1:12beyond computers. If you're pursuing a goal, but
- 1:15you haven't tracked your progress, you haven't really
- 1:18done the work because you can't prove to yourself that you're
- 1:21moving forward. And if you've learned a skill,
- 1:24but you're not documenting what you've learned, the knowledge
- 1:28evaporates. If you're building a habit, but
- 1:31you're not recording your consistency, you'll convince
- 1:34yourself you haven't been consistent.
- 1:37Backing up your work isn't just about protecting against loss.
- 1:40It's about creating proof, evidence, a record that says I
- 1:45did this now, I learned this the hard way today.
- 1:49I booted up my computer this morning and I should say I tried
- 1:54to boot up my computer this morning but I got an error
- 1:56screen and it turns out the hard drive that has my operating
- 2:00system on it died when I turned it off last night or when I
- 2:04booted it up this morning. I don't know.
- 2:06But I can't get into my computer or access any of my stuff.
- 2:10So today I'm recording on a different computer that I
- 2:13borrowed to get the podcast done.
- 2:15But I don't have all my fancy plug insurance and templates
- 2:19that make this show sound good. But I have to admit, it does
- 2:24sound good anyway, maybe even better.
- 2:26So perhaps I've been over processing a little.
- 2:29Anyway, that doesn't matter this time around it looks like I
- 2:32didn't actually lose much data because the other hard drive
- 2:36that has all my files on it is hopefully still good.
- 2:41But the show must go on. So I'm working on this computer
- 2:44for now. But enough about me, what about
- 2:47you? What work are you doing right
- 2:49now that you're not protecting? What progress are you making
- 2:54that you're not tracking? Because if you haven't backed it
- 2:57up, documented it, or recorded it, you haven't really done it.
- 3:01Protect your work, protect your progress.
- 3:04That's it for today. I'm Andrew Mcgibbon, signing off
- 3:06for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:11Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
