- Lucas: Velkommen tilbage til Learn Danish with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 67, can you believe it? I've been practicing my Danish a lot. Lucas: That's great, Luna. Today we're going to talk about two very small but very important words: 'i' and 'på'. They both mean something like 'in' or 'on' or 'at', but they're used in different situations. Luna: Oh, I've seen those. They're prepositions, right? Like 'i' means 'in' and 'på' means 'on'? Lucas: Exactly. But in Danish, we use them a bit differently than in English. Let's start with 'i'. It means 'in' when you're inside a room or a building. For example: 'Jeg er i køkkenet.' That means 'I am in the kitchen.' Luna: Jeg er i køkkenet. So if I'm in the living room, I'd say 'Jeg er i stuen'? Lucas: Yes! Perfect. 'Stuen' is the living room. And what about a cinema? 'Vi er i biografen.' That means 'We are in the cinema.' Luna: Vi er i biografen. Okay, that makes sense. So when do we use 'på'? Lucas: We use 'på' for 'on' a surface, or 'at' a place like work or school. For example: 'Bogen er på bordet.' That's 'The book is on the table.' Luna: Bogen er på bordet. So 'on' the table. And what about 'at work'? Lucas: Good question. For work, we say 'på arbejde'. So 'Hun er på arbejde' means 'She is at work.' Luna: Hun er på arbejde. So it's 'på' for work, but 'i' for kitchen. That's a little tricky. Lucas: It is, but you'll get the hang of it. Let's practice with a few more. 'Katten er på stolen.' The cat is on the chair. Luna: Katten er på stolen. And if the cat is in the kitchen, it would be 'Katten er i køkkenet'? Lucas: Exactly! You're catching on. Now, another common one: 'Nøglerne er i tasken.' The keys are in the bag. Luna: Nøglerne er i tasken. So 'i' for inside a bag. Lucas: Right. And if the keys are on the table, you'd say 'Nøglerne er på bordet.' Luna: Nøglerne er på bordet. Okay, I think I'm getting it. Let's do a quick recap. Lucas: Sure. Repeat after me: 'Jeg er i køkkenet.' Luna: Jeg er i køkkenet. Lucas: 'Bogen er på bordet.' Luna: Bogen er på bordet. Lucas: 'Vi er i biografen.' Luna: Vi er i biografen. Lucas: 'Hun er på arbejde.' Luna: Hun er på arbejde. Lucas: 'Katten er på stolen.' Luna: Katten er på stolen. Lucas: 'Nøglerne er i tasken.' Luna: Nøglerne er i tasken. That feels good! I can already use these in real life. Lucas: Absolutely. And if you find these episodes helpful, you know, Fexingo is all about making language learning accessible. If today was actually useful to you, the way these stay ad-free is listener support. Just go to buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It really helps us keep going. Luna: Yeah, I think that's a great way to give back. Even a small coffee goes a long way. But back to prepositions — what about 'at the station'? Is that 'i' or 'på'? Lucas: At the train station is 'på stationen'. So 'Jeg er på stationen' means 'I am at the station.' It's like a place you go to, not inside a room. Luna: Jeg er på stationen. So 'i' is for enclosed spaces like rooms, and 'på' is for surfaces and places like work or station. Lucas: That's a good rule of thumb. Now, let's try a little dialogue. I'll ask a question, and you answer using 'i' or 'på'. 'Hvor er du?' Luna: Jeg er i køkkenet. Lucas: Great. 'Hvor er bogen?' Luna: Bogen er på bordet. Lucas: Perfect. 'Hvor er katten?' Luna: Katten er på stolen. Lucas: Excellent. And 'Hvor er nøglerne?' Luna: Nøglerne er i tasken. Lucas: You nailed it! So remember: 'i' for inside, 'på' for on or at a place. Luna: I'll practice these all week. Tak for i dag, Lucas! Lucas: Selv tak, Luna! And to all our listeners, keep practicing these prepositions. See you next time on Learn Danish with Fexingo!
