- 0:00Hello and welcome to another episode of the Christian Reef
- 0:03podcast. Today's guest is a musician and
- 0:05podcaster hailing, all the way from New Jersey in the United
- 0:08States is name is Daryl Watson? Welcome to The Showdown, hide
- 0:11it. What's going on?
- 0:13Christian, glad to be here. Thanks for having me here.
- 0:16Glad to finally have you here. My let's just jump straight into
- 0:18it. Took us for your musical Journey
- 0:21from the beginnings. Until now what's the story?
- 0:25Well, currently right now. I'm 31.
- 0:28I story officially making. Music, when I was 17, I made my
- 0:32friend Ryan, we made a group, The Board of Education, got
- 0:35lights, 45 projects that came out back, then been writing ever
- 0:39since I got to work with last cabal, which is another van
- 0:43group that I work with and I have some solo work out now.
- 0:46So I've been, I've been at it for about 14 15 years now, on
- 0:49Independence it. But what's kind of inspired you
- 0:52to get into? Because of say, everyone has
- 0:54kind of a connection to music in a different way.
- 0:56For some people, it's maybe upbringing, Or you know, a case
- 1:01of where they are and they use that to kind of artistically say
- 1:07motivate them or you know, okay that for example with me and
- 1:10music, I've been a musician or my life as well and over time
- 1:15it's developed. So when I was younger, it was
- 1:17more about kind of the love of music and just wanting to
- 1:20perform. And then years later it's become
- 1:22more about, I don't know, communicating what the soul has.
- 1:27I don't know, but what is it for you, was it?
- 1:30View. Go back to the first part of the
- 1:33question just growing up. Like, with both my parents, my
- 1:37dad, we should listen to Funk like early hip hop, no run
- 1:41d.m.c. Kurtis, Blow stuff like that
- 1:43from his day and, you know, 90s into the 2000.
- 1:47I just always been like I always loved music, you know, obviously
- 1:51hip-hop, but I've been to a lot of other stuff too.
- 1:53Like a local radio. Hey, I love like I said, Funk
- 1:56Jazz, like I'm into a lot of different stuff as well, but As
- 2:00far as me personally, like I do I like the challenge of just
- 2:05because just being a better artist but also I like you said
- 2:08just being able to like, express yourself.
- 2:11You know, I think that's the most important thing of Music.
- 2:14We get so caught up, especially how, you know, capitalism and
- 2:17everything is now. It's crazy.
- 2:20It's wild out here, but end of the day, music supposed to
- 2:22really at the core of these self-expression, you know, what
- 2:26do you make of how the music treats?
- 2:28A scene has changed over the I mean we're similar in age on 29
- 2:32your 31 so we're grew up at the same time, different parts of
- 2:35the world. So we've seen the same sort of
- 2:37changes certainly in the last 15 or 20 odd years.
- 2:41Like what what do you make of the industry now?
- 2:45So Romper Room industry is a Romper Room.
- 2:48What's that think? It's just wow like it's hard for
- 2:52all kind of it. You know I feel as though the
- 2:57last 10 years Have been ridiculous, but I think the last
- 3:01like three have been, even more ridiculous.
- 3:06I'm pretty sure you can attest to some of the things that you,
- 3:08you know, you have across the pond.
- 3:10Like, how it's always been like, you know, emulate.
- 3:13Whatever is popular now, whatever the popular things
- 3:16that's always a, you know, that's always a thing.
- 3:19However, we can always count on music always changing.
- 3:23Yeah, I feel like the last three, four years, it all and
- 3:28all genres. Not Necessarily just hip-hop,
- 3:30but it as a whole everything. So stagnant, like country music
- 3:35is stagnant. Rock is stagnant, at a lot of
- 3:38genres are very, very stay hip hop is super stagnant right now,
- 3:41but a lot of things are very, very stagnant and there hasn't
- 3:44been a lot of like change going on.
- 3:47But I feel as though, with how everything's going like as far
- 3:51as like, culture as itself is changing, like work from home is
- 3:54a big thing. Now, the pin them and brought a
- 3:57lot of Entrepreneurship. In general, you know, just in
- 4:00general, not speaking just music, but with all that being
- 4:03said, I think that's going to trickle back to Independent
- 4:06Artists because I feel as though, as some point, it's like
- 4:10bigger labels. They keep pushing the same type
- 4:12of stuff, the same type of artists and it's like really bad
- 4:17downward. The consumer, I feel as though
- 4:20will gravitate to something different, you know.
- 4:24Yeah, I agree with you. Like all the best music.
- 4:26I listen to these days is all even unsigned.
- 4:29Artist or lesser known. And that's not me, like, trying
- 4:32to be like, oh, I listened to the underground stuff on.
- 4:34Oh, cool. It's just this bad music.
- 4:36I don't know, like, when I hear stuff in the charts like it's,
- 4:40it's okay, you know? I'm not as bothered as I used to
- 4:44be. When I was younger, I used to,
- 4:45when I was a teenager, I was like really, like know down with
- 4:47the system and it's not about underground right?
- 4:50But now I'm just like that. If it sounds good like he cares,
- 4:53right? But and I like means streams
- 4:55artist and things is that too. But I always judge your artist.
- 4:59Unlike their growth. Hmm, you know, and I feel like
- 5:02they don't push none of that really, it's just kind of like,
- 5:05but at the same time, bigger artists can get away with doing
- 5:09stuff like that. Like I can just regurgitate the
- 5:11same stuff over and over and it's like, people going to eat
- 5:14it up. It's a disservice is what, like
- 5:16always listening to. Yeah, Samantha Netherland ton of
- 5:19the other day, just him reviewing people because I'm a
- 5:22bit of a sadist. So I love to hear him.
- 5:24Just shit on people. It's just funny and it's
- 5:27brilliant. Yeah.
- 5:28And he was We're sitting on Drake and I was sort of sitting
- 5:32there and thinking about it like over the last 10-15 years of his
- 5:35career and I kind of found myself agreeing with a lot of
- 5:39the point specifically what we're talking about.
- 5:41Like just I agree like I say from views.
- 5:48To now he's been coasting. Yeah, but and that begs the
- 5:53question, doesn't it? Like is their responsibility in
- 5:56a musician to be the best you could be or can you get away
- 6:01with just, I mean, we know you can get away with just putting
- 6:04out, whatever people will buy it, based on name value alone.
- 6:07But is that right? I don't feel like it's right,
- 6:10especially within hip-hop, because you can't really pop
- 6:14shit. Like, oh, I'm the biggest, I'm
- 6:16the best rapper but then not push the genre.
- 6:20Hmm, you know, especially within hip-hop because it's so at the
- 6:24core fundamentally supposed to be very, very, you know,
- 6:27competitive. You know, I feel like the
- 6:30biggest thing that's happened with hip-hop, as well as that
- 6:32it's, I mean, this is nothing new, it's become more
- 6:36mainstream. Like it's always been At the
- 6:39heart of that popular culture, they always used to be more like
- 6:43not the central Focus but more kind of the thing to decide
- 6:45that's like, oh, this is interesting, this is different.
- 6:47No, yeah, you know me, I especially like 10 years ago to
- 6:51now, I hip-hop is the number one genre in America right now.
- 6:56Like that's never been. If not the number one, not like,
- 6:59you know, it's been in the top three, four, five, but now, it's
- 7:02just so full. It's just so much in culture,
- 7:05period, you know, and that's the thing.
- 7:08Like, I don't know about you, but like, when I was growing up
- 7:10Hip Hop, for me, it was always about, you know, who's got the
- 7:14best raps, who's got the most kind of encouraging backstory of
- 7:20something, you can connect to relate to.
- 7:22I just, I don't know. I can't really relate to some
- 7:24rich guy. Rapping about how difficult it
- 7:27is, to be famous and have millions in the bank, like, I
- 7:31mean, and and again it's the same criticism that's been made
- 7:35a 50 million times but there's a lot more of those Now it used to
- 7:39be there's like a few of them at the top and then everyone else
- 7:41is struggling trying to get to the top.
- 7:42Now, everyone's at the top and it's like, hmm.
- 7:45Like people, for instance, you shouldn't someone like Eminem,
- 7:48right? At the end of the day, what else
- 7:51does he have to wrap up? That is true and I am afraid.
- 7:55I know I'm a big fan, although I do feel like, at some point I
- 8:00feel like certain like I think Jay-Z is a good example.
- 8:03He kind of like slows down. You know Nas is kind of sort of
- 8:08an as of late and I feel like whatever he said that in an
- 8:14interview recently with double XL he said he's not really
- 8:16worried about making the best songs, he just wants to be the
- 8:18best rapper, which makes sense. And at that point, if that's
- 8:22what you say, you are, and that's what you're trying to do,
- 8:24I get it because I feel like his as a technical or technical
- 8:28level. Obviously he's a creme de La
- 8:30Creme but what makes him so great or what I like most about
- 8:33him is the fact he has good songs.
- 8:35Like, you know, Haley is Until his soldiers, etc, etc.
- 8:38He makes really great songs that, you know, that that that
- 8:42hit impact and he makes songs that other artists couldn't
- 8:46make, you know, I feel like to me that that helps to find how
- 8:49how go to the artist is well, given that you're a producer as
- 8:53well. So you can kind of appreciate
- 8:55this. I feel like a lot of that comes
- 8:57from from dr. Dre really.
- 8:59I mean, yeah, if you look at everything, he's connected with
- 9:03both from what he's directly involved in.
- 9:06In producing and even rapping on two projects that he's just
- 9:10worked with. I mean, I feel like I feel like
- 9:15that I haven't really heard of many other producers in the game
- 9:19similar to dr. Dre that a new Jenna and I'm
- 9:21sure there are. Maybe you just don't hear about
- 9:23them but like, I don't know, like it's rare that I overhear
- 9:27something that comes from under his umbrella that I don't like
- 9:30gentleman. You know, I got to get you, I
- 9:33mean, it's all about the vibe and the connections that you
- 9:36meet and like the overall feel that you're going for, you know,
- 9:41he's a very underrated producer, as well.
- 9:43Very amazing producer. I mean he's a couple of songs.
- 9:48I was like, you know, as far as And I think that has a lot to do
- 10:03with how music as a whole. It's kind of been like I want to
- 10:08say cheeping, but to a degree almost sheep.
- 10:10And, you know, it's like when we like 10 years ago, it was like,
- 10:14oh, well now you have a microphone like anybody can just
- 10:17make music. But now it's like, damn, anybody
- 10:19can produce two? So it's like them two together
- 10:22is just like a whole bunch of, like, short people looking for
- 10:25shortcuts and things of that nature.
- 10:27And, you know, speaking of which, like what do you make of
- 10:30this? Thought I've always found this
- 10:31really weird. In the last 10 or 12 years, you
- 10:34get a lot of people selling Beats.
- 10:35Now, it's like a weird thing like where you can be like oh
- 10:39yeah you can pay me extra money and you can have free use of
- 10:44these beats and I don't know why but it just strikes me is really
- 10:49odd. It's like no different to.
- 10:51If I would just quickly, write something on guitar.
- 10:53And then be like, oh yeah, I'm going to charge you a flat fee
- 10:57of $250 to use the fuck's fee fucking cause I don't, I don't
- 11:02At that the I guess I got samples and stuff but like right
- 11:06right I don't know and there's a lot of people did.
- 11:10Yeah. It's really tough.
- 11:11Like personally I like musically outside of a anything that I
- 11:17like work with my co-producer. Start the actual production end
- 11:20of it, I work with, go gasps know who's from Philly?
- 11:23One of my friends Focus far from Romania.
- 11:26Like I have a network of producer that I do work with
- 11:29like because it's like they have a similar style they come And
- 11:32get where I'm coming from, whatever the case is.
- 11:34But going back to that. Yeah, it's kind of crazy because
- 11:36now it's like you can just download the program.
- 11:39Use the, in the thing is when people sell like a lot of the
- 11:41beats and things, it's like your Beats.
- 11:43Don't sound like it's just stock sounds, you don't tweak
- 11:46anything. It's just.
- 11:47It doesn't sound like, you know, and I feel like especially like
- 11:50you were saying going back to like paying for it.
- 11:53Like I don't have a problem purchasing production but that
- 11:56came to the point. It'd have to be some sort of
- 11:57production, whether it was $10 or $150, it has to be some sort
- 12:01of Somewhere. It's like, all right, I can do
- 12:04something with this. That either a, I can do
- 12:09something on this, that no one else would do because that, that
- 12:12also eliminates a lot of the problem because you have the
- 12:14same be to someone, but if you can make a the type of song that
- 12:19no one else would be able to make with that, that that helps
- 12:21out but it's just like lazy is really lazy man.
- 12:25Cuz it's like if people just get so you know, it's just they'll
- 12:30be like oh who's hot now that make this wrapper type beat into
- 12:35that wrapper type beat and stuff and it's like to the point where
- 12:38it's I feel as though producers as a whole Is almost less
- 12:45genuine than like artists and artist is like copying do allow
- 12:50shit. But producers it's like they
- 12:52just biting sounds biting Styles like they don't take time to
- 12:55learn it or do you want a computer?
- 12:57Yes. Do you like music?
- 12:58Yes. Well, you were producing them,
- 13:01basically, as I to stop drums, the stock sounds, it's like the
- 13:06very it's like damn, like, at least, you know, Make it
- 13:10personalized. I will say this.
- 13:13Sometimes it can be really, really well done.
- 13:15Like I remember back in the day, there was so there's this metal
- 13:18band called periphery, right? It's a progressive style, metal
- 13:22band. And I remember hearing the story
- 13:23that they're very first album was just entirely produced on a
- 13:27computer by one guy. And that blew me away because I
- 13:30was like, surely not like I normally you can tell the
- 13:34difference but this was not the first instance where you just
- 13:36couldn't tell that it was midi drums or whatever.
- 13:40And I was like, Wow, leave me while I would say even with
- 13:44that, I'm pretty sure they did not have tweak tweak, some
- 13:47things, change some things around, you know, not as much,
- 13:51just like drag and drop. But that's, that's actually
- 13:53dope. You say, miss all one person.
- 13:57See, that's, that's really cool like me as an artist I would, I
- 14:01would not like be opposed to having a one-on-one project.
- 14:06Was one producer. However, I do think sometimes
- 14:09you can and pigeonhole yourself into like a certain sound and
- 14:14you don't want to be pigeonholed into a certain sound like
- 14:16because even if it works, even if your sounds original like the
- 14:20baby, he he's he's popular and he got Popular by having his own
- 14:24style, his own flow, his own whatever.
- 14:26But now it's like, bro, you kind of just be doing the same thing
- 14:29over and over. There's no growth as an artist,
- 14:32some people do careers on the other slide of the middle
- 14:34button, did that? But again, to your point, they
- 14:37release released almost the same record for the 30.
- 14:40They get a bit tiring after a while.
- 14:43Why did I man? I mean I guess it depends
- 14:46there's always there's always going to be a core audience and
- 14:50it's going to be like the bigger might mainstream audience to
- 14:55know me. Like there's so many artists
- 14:56over the years that have like were big in a particular moment
- 15:00and then suddenly, you know, just one like for instance at
- 15:04work I've been, I've noticed a lot of the music that's played
- 15:08where I work is all that 20. Years old.
- 15:10So it's stuff that I listen to when I was growing up.
- 15:12Right. Right.
- 15:14Well, it's a balanced approach. Yeah, no.
- 15:16Fair. Best time.
- 15:17And the best time period. The interesting thing about it
- 15:21is that some of the stuff is still relevant to this day.
- 15:24So like, if you hear like, let's say an Arctic Monkeys record,
- 15:28it's still really Arctic Monkeys is though, but they're still in
- 15:32the game, but they're in a complete over and a journey
- 15:34where we're going. Off to its.
- 15:43Now, we just off to the balcony. Like I said trips, but like, you
- 15:51were saying, Arctic Monkeys. Yeah.
- 15:56Obviously, that first record and then next, most current record,
- 15:59I like night and day. But what the point is, that,
- 16:02like, a band, like, that has longevity, but then, as you as
- 16:06we sort of discussed earlier, they've kind of grown with the
- 16:08time to stay relevant. But then there's some artists
- 16:11that were huge in a particular year and then you just never
- 16:16hear from them again and they still make music to this day.
- 16:19Another good example of the same time, the band toured front
- 16:22Spider-Man had a huge record. One of, are you gonna take me
- 16:25home? Like the biggest record ever of
- 16:28the year? And then yeah.
- 16:30Just it's just I mean they did a few things off to that but not
- 16:34to the same level and sometimes I wonder like how much of that
- 16:39is actually done to Lark or down to the artists, trying to stay
- 16:42liver irrelevant and then sometimes, maybe it's just a
- 16:44case of like they're not interested in trying to keep
- 16:47putting out stuff to stay popular.
- 16:49Ella and they just want to release music like, you know,
- 16:51that's interesting. I need is a balanced personally,
- 16:58like creating. I try to Branch out as much as I
- 17:03can and do as many different have as many different sounds.
- 17:07But one thing I've always liked, try to take pages from like
- 17:10other artists and see how they adapt my friends.
- 17:13I think Kanye. Whoa, Kanye and Kanye's.
- 17:17Time for my favorite artist, I would say he's a good example
- 17:21because he came out early. Thousands, he helped change the
- 17:24game but still he still reinvented himself, you know.
- 17:30He's a, he's a, he's an interesting example.
- 17:32Me, he kind of goes back to what you were saying before, about an
- 17:35artist who creates their own thing, like early Kanye was just
- 17:40very in line with what was kind of going on.
- 17:43At the time in the hip hop scene, there's a lot of artists
- 17:46are very similar music and then I feel like from that point
- 17:50onwards, he just made his own obviously made his own brand and
- 17:54he became like his own entity. But his music has always kind of
- 17:57been Just very spicy and out there and weird.
- 18:01It's just Kanye. Like, it's almost like a genre
- 18:04at this point. Not agree.
- 18:07And like, it's just like one thing that I like most about him
- 18:10is even within hip-hop, like he kind of like Bridge there yet.
- 18:14Like he gets songs of like most death and Times of poly their
- 18:17songs with Jay-Z thing. You know, he did a whole album
- 18:20with common, you know, which I personally think my I think
- 18:23that's Percy is best album but like stuff like that.
- 18:26Just, you know, Bridging the Gap.
- 18:28He worked with the clips. To work with, you know, like
- 18:30different types of size of just, you know, the one genre, you
- 18:34know, which is though. He worked for Thirty Seconds to
- 18:36Mars. He's a using.
- 18:37He's he's, he's worked out and that's one thing as RS.
- 18:42I'm always trying to do just Branch out and just be being
- 18:47more and be more Collective because even within just
- 18:50hip-hop, like you said, like, I like, you can have a lot of
- 18:52different sounds just within that one jungle.
- 18:55Hopefully, show. Ya know, it's fun me away, how
- 18:58much hip-hop is Has changed over the years as far as like.
- 19:01There's so many different styles of.
- 19:03You got trapped Grime, drill, just all sorts of different
- 19:08styles and record different countries as well.
- 19:12Correct. That it makes, it makes sense.
- 19:14You're going to have these different subgenres.
- 19:16I mean, it was the same when I was growing up with, with Rock
- 19:18and metal music. I remember trying to explain to
- 19:21people the idea of subgenres and people would just look at me
- 19:23blankly, like, like what do you mean?
- 19:25It all sounds the same and I'm like, does it.
- 19:27Does it really Yeah, me and then you got, you got, you got
- 19:31artists that kind of like, can be in more than one, you know,
- 19:35like that Radiohead, like Radiohead.
- 19:37It's like, depending on what I will, miss more electronic than
- 19:41anything, you know, saying, yes with I'll send this to a friend
- 19:45the other day, but, like, how there was some artists like same
- 19:48use who started this, just like a out-and-out.
- 19:51Rock band, and then, like, in more recent years, I think they
- 19:54did. They did like a DubStep out of
- 19:55at one point or something. Yes, I believe.
- 19:57So, Previous at what and like, hey, Fairplay, try something new
- 20:01right, but just just really odd. I don't know, but I guess, yeah.
- 20:05If you don't, if you want to do it, you want to do it.
- 20:07You know. And that's kind of the beauty of
- 20:10creative expression, I suppose in music, but you're always
- 20:14gonna be heavily criticized for doing anything that deviates
- 20:16from I suppose people's expectations of what you should
- 20:20be. That is true, even, I would say,
- 20:24have you heard Drake's last project?
- 20:26No, I, I had fun. Time I shit on it and I just
- 20:29kind of I mean I imagine it's like all things where he won't
- 20:34like he won't like it will get a bad review but then I'll
- 20:36probably hear on the radio and I won't be that bothered about it,
- 20:38you know, be like, okay, I heard it.
- 20:41It's more like dance tight, it's not rap.
- 20:45So it's kind of like that's all his stuff there, isn't it?
- 20:47Like every once in a while, he'll try and see.
- 20:50That's the funny thing about him.
- 20:51It's like you're a rapper. But yeah, you don't have a full
- 20:54wrap project, but then you got like, Jersey, Marley where he's
- 20:58kind of like, you know, then you got like UK Drake, then you got
- 21:04Caribbean Drake and you got, you know I'm saying?
- 21:08You got it just reminds me of that time with Snoop Dogg it
- 21:15like for like 20 years. It's crazy.
- 21:25Like what see? I feel like the only difference
- 21:28I would say is I feel like it's interesting because I feel like
- 21:34Drake, kind of like wise Wings when Snoop did what he did?
- 21:39I feel like that's probably like how he felt his career and, you
- 21:42know, he's just he probably was, you know, in a mental space.
- 21:46You found me. He's just smoking a lot of weed,
- 21:50and he happened to be in Jamaica at the time and he was like, if
- 21:53it's in my top five sleep is definitely my favorite boss.
- 21:57Nice brilliant for real. I think he get, he's one of
- 22:00those people that gets it like, it's okay.
- 22:02It's okay to move with the times.
- 22:04And try different things, but I think you kind of stay true to
- 22:08yourself and stay somewhat consistent, you know, and he has
- 22:12a personality. Sure.
- 22:15Yeah, I think I'll be more impressed by like his business
- 22:18exploits over the last 10-15 years.
- 22:20Like still, he's different cooking shows and reality shows
- 22:23he's been doing and this hot like he literally has a show.
- 22:28I loved, I loved his kind of brazen approach to life like
- 22:31he'll ever be doing this show, where he's essentially doing.
- 22:34Like a podcast with a bunch of his friends and they will get
- 22:37high and just shoot the shit or he he said that they just live
- 22:42streams games and just gets high and just does that and I one
- 22:46time he I think he likes forgot that he was live streaming and
- 22:48just left it for like 24 hours and then he came back and he's
- 22:51just like oh shit. Okay?
- 23:02And then he came out with, you know, one of the best albums
- 23:04ever. So I mean that I mean if that's
- 23:09not you to me within itself is crazy like because he came out
- 23:15with doggy style, which is probably one, you know, it took
- 23:18top however you want to rank it. It's a top whatever, you know,
- 23:23and he still, you know, continue and wasn't like haunted by that.
- 23:28Where if you look at someone like Nas, I think he still he
- 23:32still haunted by all night to this day.
- 23:34I feel like earlene has fun. I love all of his early stuff.
- 23:38Like I mean I'm in I'm personally just when it comes to
- 23:42rap and hip-hop I'm stuck in the 90s / 2000s for me, that's like
- 23:46the true. And that that would that would
- 23:48be like what's on my gym playlist for example.
- 23:50But when it comes to new stuff like I don't know, I try to get
- 23:54into it but I just it's not, it doesn't have the same Vibe, the
- 23:59same fear. I mean, Who do you like, like,
- 24:01listen to that's like newer. Like, like I always say, like
- 24:05someone that came out or didn't get I'll say, pop it in till
- 24:09like 2015 and down. So like, oh geez.
- 24:14Then I guess. No one listened to Freddie
- 24:19Gibbs. Nah.
- 24:21Nah, like solid sphere. Yeah, I'm sure they were good
- 24:32artists out there. It's just different now back
- 24:35then it was like if you say 90s and 2000's it was like you had
- 24:39to be different but you can name 10, random hip-hop artists from
- 24:43the 90s and 10 from the 2000s and more than likely.
- 24:46None of them sound the same or have similar Styles even like in
- 24:50New York, like you have Prodigy, right?
- 24:53You had Nas. And let's say, No, let me tell
- 24:58one out. Hello.
- 25:01That's three different artists from the same area and you know,
- 25:04saying very close. But they're not, you know, I'm
- 25:06saying, like the slang might be kind of closer but the artists
- 25:09like you're not, you know, I'm saying that's within the same
- 25:12region, even the even down south at that time, anyone, you know,
- 25:16like yeah, I'll cast me as Scarface.
- 25:19They both Southern rappers almost sudden, you know
- 25:21something acts, but they're not, you know, I got you, I got you.
- 25:27I think it's just like, I'm very picky when it comes to rap and
- 25:29hip-hop and that's the more the issue mommy.
- 25:33Not to say, there isn't a make that that makes you a good
- 25:35taste, maybe. I don't know.
- 25:38I I feel like I'm just not into what the majority of people were
- 25:41in to. Maybe I think that might just be
- 25:45an age thing to be honest with you, more than anything else.
- 25:49Because I mean, I'm getting to the age now where there's stuff
- 25:51that I grew up with that people don't don't know, and I'm just
- 25:56How can, you know this? But then of course they didn't
- 25:58grow up with it. They don't know about it.
- 25:59And that's just aging Justice, what happens?
- 26:02Yeah, I'm about to get Sarah's to because even like, because
- 26:07even like, when we were younger, right?
- 26:09You had like even if you didn't like listen to others armors,
- 26:13you would know other artists, but they be still, like,
- 26:16respected in their own. Like, if you're my glue listen
- 26:19to like Blink 182, but, you know, blink, when he needs to.
- 26:24And it's like there's the A respected within their genre.
- 26:27You know I'm saying or like Good Charlotte when they first first
- 26:31first first came out, you know I'm saying like they won't pop
- 26:34in. You know I'm saying they were
- 26:35popping but they were still respected like it.
- 26:37If someone didn't listen to rap they'd be like well at least I
- 26:39know 50 but he's still read. I'm saying like even like what
- 26:43they will push back to the dolls armors and Compass because even
- 26:46now it's like, even pop, like you, Christina, Aguilera Britney
- 26:49Spears, etc, etc. Now, it's like it's hard even
- 26:53across genres, you know. I saw something recently, which
- 26:57I think sums this up very well. It was, it was like a like a
- 27:02tick tock about how hard 50 Cent went back in the day, back in
- 27:06the early 2000s, right? And it was, It was kind of one
- 27:10of those like, are you just had to be there kind of things.
- 27:12And I think it's like, that's kind of the key to know to make
- 27:16like you can don't get me wrong, you can appreciate music before
- 27:18your time in a pack. Like, for instance, I love The
- 27:20Smiths. I adore this, right?
- 27:22And I was not born in the 80s, I have no way of appreciating what
- 27:25that must have. Been like to grow up with that
- 27:27but I love it. I still think it's iconic even
- 27:30to this day but like it's the same with 50 Cent.
- 27:33Like people don't know how bit like huge.
- 27:36It was when he came on the scene and they drop those albums like
- 27:40you can go back and listen to it and it's still slams but it's
- 27:44just yours in there. Yes it was going down.
- 27:48Like I look back now in the 2000s and you know what it
- 27:50probably is rose-tinted glasses but like we I do feel like there
- 27:54was a lot of exciting. A progressive music at that time
- 27:58right across the board. Yeah, and I feel sometimes I
- 28:02feel like there just isn't that anymore.
- 28:04Sometimes I'm wrong. Sometimes something will come
- 28:06when it will blow you away in about who I feel like a lot of
- 28:09the stuff that's interesting and out there is as I said earlier,
- 28:13like it's stuff that you've maybe not so aware of or not.
- 28:18So, well, yeah, look, it's not push.
- 28:21Yeah. You know what?
- 28:23It's algorithm game now. Algorithm.
- 28:26That's that's that's a big problem.
- 28:28Everything is algorithm, do you think numbers?
- 28:34Because I've had some people say like album album is dead like
- 28:37album and I don't know if I believe that really.
- 28:40I still think there's a market for it but like I'm seeing that
- 28:44more and more artists. Now, we're just releasing
- 28:46singles and sometimes that's all they'll do.
- 28:48They'll just keep releasing singles.
- 28:51Did you think like, that's where we're headed?
- 28:52Is just endless singles? Or do you think projects can
- 28:56still kind of exist as they did? I think I think it depends on
- 29:03the artist because that is also something, personally, I've been
- 29:09I've been working on like, tying into this.
- 29:14I've recorded a lot of tracks and the way I wanted to release
- 29:18it was, you know, some songs like I was just released an EP
- 29:21and then songs like every couple weeks, but make a big project at
- 29:24the end and put it together, but I think it depends on momentum
- 29:28of the artist. that's like if you're a big, big, I always want
- 29:32to keep stalking my mainstream engine, but if you have a super,
- 29:35super big following, and You can get that off, you can but one
- 29:41thing I think people you can do a little bit of both.
- 29:46My last project 16 transfer that ass, I dropped a single, another
- 29:51single, we dropped the 16 songs and then we pick singles off the
- 29:55album, but I think it's starting to create like two different
- 29:59lanes for ours to go into either you're going.
- 30:01I feel like if that's what you and therefore there's no wrong
- 30:04way about it. If you, if you just depends on
- 30:07my how you hear your game plan towards, you know, if you want
- 30:10to do the every, you know, every couple whatever is drop single,
- 30:13single singles, you can. However, the Time the
- 30:17disadvantage that I think are, if you're going single single
- 30:20single single continuously, you're either going to push
- 30:23something one way or another. And it's like, let's say you
- 30:26make one song is like a party saw another song.
- 30:28It's a Party Song and you're getting a lot of good.
- 30:31You know. You did a lot of good that you
- 30:33know momentum going that way. Then the next song you want to
- 30:36talk about something different like a breakup or something.
- 30:38That meat that might disadvantage you, because people
- 30:40are used to bang, bang. Not something different.
- 30:43Whereas, if you lose our project, you can Hit somebody
- 30:47with it. So I think the best method is
- 30:49probably a little bit of both moving forward, but more artists
- 30:53are doing the singles but that can feel a flame out and that's
- 30:56the tations of a certain way, you know, I feel like the
- 31:00streaming game has slowly but surely begun to kind of Kill
- 31:05album as we know it and let not completely.
- 31:09But I think that as we move forward, we're starting to
- 31:14realize what's this? You can't.
- 31:16Me he's back in. Here you go.
- 31:19I'm back. Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 31:23As we move forward with beginning to sort of see the
- 31:26artists aren't really making as much money as they should be
- 31:29from streaming. Correct.
- 31:31And some people do like they're very very upper top Echelon of
- 31:35obviously like it when they get like hundreds of millions of
- 31:38streams, they probably owning a little bit from it but the
- 31:41consensus seems to be that people are learning from like
- 31:44gigs and merchandise. Ice and then, anything else.
- 31:48And for big artists, maybe they're not going to feel that
- 31:53impact. But for up and coming artists, I
- 31:55mean, I feel like the numbers they don't do much for them as
- 31:59far as money is concerned but they do as far as like showing
- 32:02like okay this is the potential of this artist.
- 32:04Look at how much reach they have kind of thing.
- 32:08But yeah my point just connecting it to what we were
- 32:10talking about before is that like if you're an artist up and
- 32:13coming now is there really much point for you to release an
- 32:16album. given the context of that, you know, maybe it is
- 32:19worth kind of continually releasing singles to a time when
- 32:25it becomes. I don't know.
- 32:26Somewhat profitable. It seems like it's a the time to
- 32:30release a records. Maybe.
- 32:32Yeah. It's the time I personally
- 32:36wouldn't if you're like just starting out within a year or
- 32:41two I by saying no because you want to build up that quick
- 32:45catalog because at the end of the day, when it comes to music
- 32:49and everything, it's all about catalog.
- 32:52You know do you think at the end of the day it's all about
- 32:56catalog and cuz at because you have one hot song if no one you
- 33:02know has nothing else to go back to those on, they're going to
- 33:04forget about you either way. Like, you know, you come in, we
- 33:08all come across. Like, yo, this song is crazy
- 33:11here artist and I don't got nothing.
- 33:14That's a good point actually. Yeah their husband is 30.
- 33:19What's worse is that they got one good track but the rest of
- 33:23the tracks are trash and you're like oh yeah it's tough.
- 33:31You just got chalk it up man. I think I think probably the
- 33:36best thing but end of the day it always comes back to catalog.
- 33:39Whether it's How much you have to offer because even though
- 33:43we're in the quick consumer Market is still a consumer
- 33:47Market in it. I've lost them.
- 33:51I've lost them. He's gone, he's gone again.
- 33:54Oh no, I've got fill up this space right now with the silence
- 33:58and it's really odd because I'm not used to this level of
- 34:00silence, all I hear is Blackness and darkness.
- 34:04Nothing. And he's back, and I'm back.
- 34:11See, the only reason I wanted to keep that going.
- 34:12This is I don't have to edit Okay but now that's all great
- 34:17but I yeah like you got to have content and then the day you
- 34:22know and it's like on a personal level as an artist like I'm like
- 34:27I got a lot of songs. How many songs you go?
- 34:31Like in total that are release. 140 140 since when, since what
- 34:40year 2010 every year since 2010 or 11, I would say 10 tracks a
- 34:48month crikey. Oh damn.
- 34:52Something like that. If you broke it down like that.
- 34:54Yeah, but I got like eight projects.
- 34:57Not know I got my projects now. So what would you say your
- 35:00biggest successes so far? Even numbers performances
- 35:03merchandise, What would you say? Oh, people you work with maybe?
- 35:09Hmm. No, reverse order people.
- 35:12I've worked with, I've worked with Mickey facts.
- 35:16He's a, he's a rap using a double XL back with like think
- 35:20was in two thousand, eight or nine.
- 35:22He's an underground. He's very prominent working with
- 35:27obviously my best friend. Mark, Thomas went to Saks, is in
- 35:30the stacks, a lot of the songs, I have died, Michael row when
- 35:33the keys in the world. Hooks, as I said before,
- 35:36producer wise go to my 14, Really G from Jersey but I
- 35:42shows. All right, there's a lot of the
- 35:46pandemic kind of, you know my stat all up a little bit but I'm
- 35:53more interested in doing like a live shows on YouTube and stuff.
- 35:56I think that's a good Avenue in the alley to get into.
- 36:00I'm so like what are you looking to do live streams, likewise
- 36:05streams live performances stream?
- 36:07Because you can do a lot at one time by utilizing the internet,
- 36:11you know, I think that opened up We've lost him.
- 36:16I've lost them again, as a hat-trick.
- 36:18Now, we call that a hat-trick in the UK, we have an all sorts of
- 36:23technical difficulties today, but it is a pleasure to have
- 36:27Daryl on the show. I hope he does return to us if
- 36:30he doesn't, I guess and wheeze back.
- 36:33And I we missed all of that. What will you say, okay?
- 37:13Doing things such as that online is a big Avenue.
- 37:19And on top of that, it's still important.
- 37:20You know, to be in a physical, which has driven a demand up.
- 37:26Well, you looking to achieve in your music career moving
- 37:29forward. Moving forward, and then
- 37:34immediate you just want to keep ramping it up.
- 37:38You know, I got to pull out by BP, everything available on my
- 37:42YouTube, all the songs I've been talking about all the videos and
- 37:45whatnot. I got another EP coming out next
- 37:49month and we want to keep it. You guys are super singles.
- 37:52Before I drop something, real big in quarter one next year and
- 37:56just continue to network and, you know, work with You know,
- 38:01great artists keep keep making up music, you know, keep
- 38:05improving keep raising the bar. And what would you say is the
- 38:10biggest lessons. Is that a child?
- 38:12You got kid that. Yeah, my little boys over there
- 38:15eating. Wow.
- 38:36Turn it up. How is being a father changing?
- 38:39You Oh, it gives you a lot more insight.
- 38:45Do you have any kids? No, no, not yet.
- 38:48Ah, well just, you know, like I know that sounds mad cliche, but
- 39:07but you it almost gives you a whole different like point of
- 39:10view of life. Would you say the whole
- 39:15expression? You don't know.
- 39:17Love until you see your told is true.
- 39:24Yes, you have to say. So you know the funniest thing
- 39:31is when my son was born, you know, if they show them to us
- 39:35and no, I'm not my girlfriend, she's my mother.
- 39:55Just a little guy. What?
- 40:01Yeah, he over there eating. But but yes the little guy Ray
- 40:07will cameras over here. So that's it.
- 40:10Hey kid load a oh well, just like me sure but Okay.
- 40:19Out of your career, with regards to music and producing and
- 40:22everything in between, what would you say the biggest
- 40:24lessons that music is taught you?
- 40:28I think the biggest lesson that music is taught me, Is that?
- 40:38There's never you can never find you can never not find new ways
- 40:41to get your point across. You know, I think when when I
- 40:47first started, I was about 17 and right out the gate go.
- 40:53Well this is back then going back to their what we were
- 40:56saying earlier. We came out for a whole album
- 40:59after Rick and from the gate I always was in a more like I I
- 41:05want to be independent before anything because at the end of
- 41:09the day, like I really enjoy what I do.
- 41:12It's not really about. I'm obviously going to have
- 41:16break but but you know I'm saying by the same time.
- 41:19It's like this is something that I enjoy like this is like, you
- 41:21know, part of me, extension of me.
- 41:23So one thing I was really worried about when I was
- 41:27younger. I was like, you know, as things
- 41:29is moving along, I'm gonna make my own like our third project, a
- 41:33my 21, So, I'm still like mad young, but even like, as are
- 41:38some like, damn, bro. Well, if I run out of stuff to
- 41:41come up with, well, if I run out of material, like, like this is
- 41:45something even, you know? Then I saw myself continuously
- 41:48doing consistently like, this is like, as I enjoy this, am I all
- 41:52invite? Maybe some people don't think
- 41:54that but I damn, well, if I run out of ideas, like, that's
- 41:57that's crazy. I'm still here and I ain't never
- 42:00did without an idea. I never said the bar twice and
- 42:03new songs sound the same. Same.
- 42:04But I think the biggest lesson is being I just just going with
- 42:14your gut. Whatever decision, whatever the
- 42:19case is, you gotta go with your gut and I feel like that
- 42:22translates into real life. Hmm.
- 42:25Like Vibes. Don't lie.
- 42:28Even though feelings, don't lie and staying true to yourself.
- 42:31Like if you always really liked true to yourself, Why you going
- 42:36to be alright? Like, We just lost sound but I
- 42:42totally agree with what that was saying here.
- 42:46I don't know, I don't know if you can hear me, but I'll
- 42:48continue on that point. There is a lot to be said for
- 42:53relying, on your gut feeling and your instincts.
- 42:56And I think for me possibly five or six years ago, maybe even
- 43:01sooner than that couple of years back.
- 43:03I started doing that and it's true.
- 43:06It never never. Does you wrong.
- 43:09It really, doesn't it. Like I often like to refer to it
- 43:13as like a cheat code. It's like you're getting the
- 43:15answers. All you have to do is just
- 43:17listen Interesting now. You're right and then just being
- 43:21resourceful show. Yeah yeah.
- 43:25Make the most of what's around you.
- 43:27I will say there's like you have to kind of like Put yourself in
- 43:31the right head space, in order to receive opportunities, like
- 43:37you got to have the right attitude of think, because if
- 43:39you don't, that's when you miss opportunities.
- 43:43And obviously, when opportunities come, you've got a
- 43:45make the most of them. I really try and do your best to
- 43:49make it make it, you know, they are for it's like this.
- 43:53This show every time I have someone on the guest, on the
- 43:56show I try to Get a good conversation out of them.
- 44:01I try to kind of get something that people can take away from
- 44:04it and go, okay? This is what I took away from
- 44:06this episode. This is what I learned from this
- 44:08episode or yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 44:10And it could be anything. It doesn't have to always be
- 44:11inspiring. It could be like poignant, it
- 44:13could be funny. It could be whatever, but you
- 44:17take something from it and I pride myself on the show, always
- 44:20being different. Every episode, no episode 2
- 44:23episodes are ever the same and part of that comes to Adapting
- 44:30around my guest somewhat and trying to shift myself around
- 44:34and it's not easy. It's really not easy, especially
- 44:37when it's like the first time meeting someone as well, because
- 44:40you don't always never going to click with someone and you got
- 44:43to kind of try and maneuver that.
- 44:44And I don't know it in my life right now.
- 44:48Like I've just recently started bartending again, I haven't been
- 44:53in customer services for like a while, but I came back to it
- 44:56because it just it works right now and the thing.
- 44:59Thing that I'm realizing that's really useful that I'm using
- 45:02back in podcasting is just communicate just a lot of
- 45:05confidence because obviously when you're a bartender you know
- 45:08you have a big queue, got a kind of announce yourself.
- 45:10They're like hey I'm available, you don't hear so I'm a man
- 45:14however at me sometimes. Yeah but you did it with that.
- 45:24Is that like sometimes I really actually need to do work and
- 45:28someone's Trying to confide in me.
- 45:30And I'm like, hmm, yeah, yeah. And I'm doing like, 15 different
- 45:34drinks. And once in a while that.
- 45:35Uh-huh. Great.
- 45:36Yeah, hope that works out. Yeah.
- 45:39Hmm. What should I do?
- 45:42What's, what's the best? Drink, you make real quick real
- 45:44quick? What's like, what's like, what's
- 45:47like, what's like that been worse?
- 45:48Like this is the Mitch right here.
- 45:52I got you some to say, you know, what's your I think?
- 45:54I make a good espresso martini. And I've always, I've always
- 45:58been pretty good at that. I love making cocktails to me
- 46:02whenever you make her up tells it's like that's like ultimate
- 46:06bartending 101, right there. It's, you really feel like,
- 46:10yeah, man, I'm the man. This is, this is like, and in,
- 46:13to be honest, making cocktails is really easy.
- 46:15It really is Much easier than lighting a cigarette
- 46:37slowly getting into because I've always felt uncomfortable with
- 46:41advertising myself in real life. Yes, I don't I don't like to be
- 46:47Hey, yeah, great. So, here's my life story.
- 46:49Here's everything on trying to do these care, because most
- 46:52people don't care, but I'm slowly like, I kind of try to
- 46:56get to know someone first or see if, in someone like him, would
- 47:01they be interested in this? And if it seems like they might
- 47:03be, sometimes I'll float. The idea of be like, hey, if
- 47:07you're interested, I do this by the way or, you know, but
- 47:10normally I wait for when people ask me or it comes up in
- 47:13conversation and then talk about it, but yeah.
- 47:17I'm getting, I'm getting better at it getting Paradigm.
- 47:19Trying to advertise more because that's how you get hurt.
- 47:23I say get scenes and you never know who you where that
- 47:27conversation could go and what it could lead to.
- 47:29So day by day man. A couple of final questions for
- 47:36you. What's the best advice you've
- 47:39ever received? The best advice I ever received.
- 47:52I think the best advice I ever got probably have to be
- 47:56something from my dad. Definitely had to be something
- 48:01for my dad so many lessons. I think one of the best things I
- 48:05learned about him was Just be. Damn, what's that word?
- 48:16Conviction. There you go.
- 48:20Like, you know, just like being be purposeful with hearing tank.
- 48:26Whatever it whatever it is like you know just be purposeful with
- 48:29your intent. And then now like but it helps
- 48:34out with a lot of shit. Like like if you're a friend, is
- 48:37somebody supposed to be the through thick and thin?
- 48:40Well, if I'm not really going to try to be there for somebody to
- 48:43take it friend, thick and thin. I'm not really going to be a
- 48:45monopoly fake but you know since boundaries to help set
- 48:48boundaries and Boundary setting boundaries in life you know
- 48:51especially as IRS as a creative guy set boundaries because you
- 48:55know sometimes you know how it is the people that are closest
- 48:59to always you know see the vision that You see the vision
- 49:02so you have to like with it. When you get into your creative
- 49:05space you guys you know such a value wherever the cases or
- 49:08whatever it may be and personal or whatever it is.
- 49:12So just be a very purposeful with me intent, you know, just
- 49:15being very about what you about keeping the main thing, the main
- 49:20thing Great stuff. What's the biggest life lesson
- 49:25you've learned so far? Then everything is always made
- 49:33up of little things, add up to like The Compound Effect.
- 49:39You feel me? No, I think I lost him like The
- 49:42Compound Effect like the penny doubling or whatever the case
- 49:45may be. Like everything's always working
- 49:48in one way or another. So it's like even if it's
- 49:51something has like someone's ability, do I want to lose
- 49:52weight? It's like, that's cool and all
- 49:54but it's like, wow. Like little step that shit.
- 49:57You found me. It's funny.
- 49:59You mention that today, I posted a bunch of pictures online of my
- 50:04progress over the last five months training in the gym gym
- 50:09as working hard. Yeah.
- 50:11And exactly what you said the first month, it make any
- 50:15progress, two months, very little progress.
- 50:18Three months, starting to see stuff for months.
- 50:22Really starting to make progress five months.
- 50:25Finally starting to be happy with how I feel about how I look
- 50:28and it all starts and the little things you're right.
- 50:32It all comes together and you just have to keep working at it
- 50:35working on it, working on it. And eventually you get that how
- 50:38many days a week ago? It varies.
- 50:42Before I started this bartend and stuff I was doing like every
- 50:46other day so it'd be like one day on one day off one day on
- 50:49one day off right now because I'm working like 50 hours a week
- 50:52or whatever. I'm sort of going on my off
- 50:54days. Right this week on for instance
- 50:58today tomorrow. And then Saturday.
- 51:02I mean at the same time you over time because of that, little bit
- 51:05about little bit you can go you know at the very minimum three
- 51:09times a week and you're good because you ramped it up, it
- 51:12also helps with bartending because you're always moving
- 51:15around. So you do less cardio in the gym
- 51:18and then also lifting barrels in the cellar.
- 51:22It's heavy. It's basically like lifted like
- 51:2740 kg or whatever. Like when it's full y'all need
- 51:30they need is just a little sprinkle me here and there for
- 51:35real It's interesting as well with the gym.
- 51:39Do you get you do go to the gym as well?
- 51:41Yeah. Yeah I do go right now, the one
- 51:46that go to the courts messed up so I go in there and just
- 51:49whoo-hoo whooping. Oh wait I got ya.
- 51:51So it's not you know I think personally I prefer staying
- 51:56Sports to Jimmy because I love Jim.
- 51:59Look at me wrong it's part of the lifestyle but I feel like
- 52:02when you're playing sports You don't notice like you're pushing
- 52:08yourself harder like I'm really competitive price.
- 52:10I love playing football, basketball, whatever.
- 52:12Like I love that. And yeah you you push yourself
- 52:17harder. You're sweating like crazy.
- 52:18And you don't notice the effect until afterwards.
- 52:22Yeah, you can play like three or four pickup games, it's like
- 52:25shit. I was an hour and 45 minutes,
- 52:28but it's like, yo you just played like not this summer but
- 52:32the last summer I was legit going to the basket.
- 52:35Ball court like four or five times a week and playing like
- 52:39five hours straight basketball, is insane.
- 52:45It was in shape. No, but I was I discovered, I
- 52:51still have stamina. Let's put it that way over time.
- 52:55Now though. Over time though.
- 52:59Yeah, I mean it's I think the biggest thing it made me realize
- 53:02one thing, it taught me which I already knew but it was good to
- 53:05be reminded of was that like the way to get better in life is to
- 53:09always be around people better than you.
- 53:11That's how you learn. Because I mean I was playing
- 53:14with people that were like, I'm paying a teams miles better than
- 53:18me, been paying all their life. I'd only been playing like six
- 53:21months, but I got better because of being around them and I
- 53:24really enjoyed. It was a lot of fun.
- 53:28But yeah, I just want to bring this to a close and say, a
- 53:31massive, thank you for being on the show as a final question.
- 53:34Do you have any upcoming projects or final thoughts you'd
- 53:37like to share with our listeners?
