- 0:02Our number 2, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 0:05Glad you're with us. We'll take you until 2:00 in
- 0:08this next hour. Momentarily, Elliot Cliff
- 0:10hotguyinsider.com, part of 24/7 sports.
- 0:14We'll do basketball, men's and women's and some football for
- 0:17Elliot. That's coming up.
- 0:19Bill Bender covers college football.
- 0:20That's his primary beat over at The Sporting News.
- 0:23We'll talk to him at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:25Trent will make some pics. Boys, a brutal slate of college
- 0:28hoops again tonight. Did you?
- 0:30Oh, absolutely. And you found a couple.
- 0:32Of this, well, it's finals week. It's every year.
- 0:33I know, I know, every year, but doesn't mean it's not brutal.
- 0:37It is. It's hockey night in the Miller
- 0:39house. Anyways, let's get to Elliot
- 0:42Clef. He joins us talk some Hogs.
- 0:44Hello, Elliot, Trent and Ken, how are you?
- 0:46Good. How are you guys?
- 0:48Doing well press conferences today.
- 0:50Seems like Jen Jensen met with the media, making maybe some
- 0:55news when it comes to Emily Rodriguez.
- 0:57Just the fact that this continues to linger.
- 1:00How's this going to end, Elliot? As far as you know, will she
- 1:04remain a hawk? This, this point we're we're all
- 1:08kind of in the dark as to what's going on there.
- 1:11But I guess the longer it goes on with no clarity, you got to
- 1:13start wondering, don't you? Right.
- 1:17Well, to to be frank with you guys, women's basketball isn't
- 1:21my beat. So I'm definitely not the one to
- 1:24to go to on, on a lot of stuff like this, but on talking to a
- 1:28few people around the situation, it it does it it's just it's a
- 1:33little odd, right? And it makes you raise an
- 1:35eyebrow as to how maybe things could be going awry, especially
- 1:40so quickly for a transfer portal edition that you made one of the
- 1:45best programs in the country, one of the best, you know,
- 1:48coaches in the country and Jan Jensen.
- 1:50And so, yeah, I mean, I'd, I'd love to provide more clarity on
- 1:54that, but yeah, right now it it just appears to be a huge
- 1:58question mark. We jump over to the men's side
- 2:01of things, a dominating performance against Western
- 2:04Michigan on the heels of, you know, what could have been,
- 2:06should have been against Iowa State.
- 2:09The opportunity to get that signature victory to really kick
- 2:12off the Ben McCullum era. To do that I thought was
- 2:14impressive. Western Michigan's terrible.
- 2:16They're a bad basketball team. But still, to be able to show up
- 2:18like that right away, put it to him and just keep going, I think
- 2:22that said a lot about this group.
- 2:25Yeah, I think he did too. And honestly, I think we saw it
- 2:27in the Iowa State game when they went on.
- 2:30There were, you know, taken to 22 to four runs from Iowa State
- 2:35in the in the beginning of that second-half, they responded it
- 2:38wasn't like the Michigan State game.
- 2:40I mean, even between those two games, we heard about how how
- 2:43Ben and and the Iowa staff really focused on offense and
- 2:47getting to their sets for their actions, even if the the
- 2:51opposing defense isn't allowing it and and making things happen
- 2:55one way or another offensively. And we saw that happen in the
- 2:58second-half. They really stagnated, but
- 3:00eventually got things going, got an 8 O run against the Cyclones
- 3:03and then, you know, following it up with with a big win against a
- 3:06program that you said it, Trent, not my word.
- 3:10They're terrible. Getting to bounce back when like
- 3:14that is, is really positive. It's like, OK, you know, that
- 3:17sucks. We lost a rivalry game.
- 3:19It's also the first year of the Ben McCollum era.
- 3:21Like you can't be too upset. That was an incredible showing
- 3:24on the road against the top five team in the country with guys
- 3:27like Damon lips beam on Sheila Vich.
- 3:29I mean, you guys know the roster Joshua Jefferson like those guys
- 3:32are stud and for Iowa. Did you do that with mostly a
- 3:35mid major Ross rosters pretty damn impressive and pretty
- 3:38telling of how good of a coach Ben McCollum is.
- 3:40But I think I think honestly the mentality is is there for them
- 3:44to to get right back to their winning ways clearly, and I mean
- 3:47we've just continued to see Tate stage continue to improve and
- 3:50and he played really well against Western Michigan.
- 3:53I think he might be one of the more underrated 2025 recruits in
- 3:57in high major basketball. I mean, he's he's been really
- 3:59good. Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 4:01You know who else I mean that they all of the Drake transfers.
- 4:04We thought Sturtz's game would, you know, would transfer to the
- 4:06Big 10 and he clearly has. But but as I, as I look at the
- 4:10at the rest that came with them, Banks, Combs, Manawao and and
- 4:14and Howard, really all of them, at least thus far, you know,
- 4:17with Big 10 play on the horizon night in and night out, they
- 4:21don't look out of place at all in my for my money, Elliott, how
- 4:24about you? Yeah, of course, you know, you'd
- 4:27love to have Cam Maniow be two or three inches taller, but
- 4:31other than that, you know, Speaking of the mentality, I
- 4:34mean, those guys are just attack, attack, attack gonna
- 4:38what McCollum like to describe Isaiah Howard is as like half
- 4:42nut, half crazy, and you can kind of see it in the way he
- 4:45plays. There's there's no, but I I, I
- 4:48don't know. It's always, like I said, always
- 4:50in attack mode, ready to do what he needs to be.
- 4:53It's a controlled chaos from all of those guys.
- 4:56They're willing to do The Dirty work.
- 4:57Kale Combs is silky smooth, man. Like, I did not think he was
- 5:00going to be this good, let alone this impactful.
- 5:04The nice little floater. He's got a nice little jump shot
- 5:06too. Banks is, I think starting to
- 5:09figure some things out. He kind of disappeared for a few
- 5:11games there, but he was really good the second-half against
- 5:14Iowa State, Yeah. I mean, they've they've really
- 5:18thought, I really, really thought Kale Combs was going to
- 5:20be an end of the rotation guy. But he's been a great, you know,
- 5:23additional ball handler in that starting lineup to take some of
- 5:26the pressure off Bennett Thirst. But yeah, yeah, the Drake guys
- 5:30have been good. Brendan Hassan has been one of
- 5:33the more confounding things. He played a few minutes against
- 5:36Iowa State. He played a few minutes a much
- 5:38more against Western Michigan. What kind of role?
- 5:40Let's say it's the middle February.
- 5:43They're hanging around. They're going to be a tournament
- 5:45team. What part of the rotation is it?
- 5:47Is it maybe 7 minutes a game? Is it pushing up to 15 minutes a
- 5:51game? What do you anticipate?
- 5:52Crystal ballot here is Fort Elliot.
- 5:54What do you think for Hassid as we kind of make our way through
- 5:56the Big 10 Conference schedule? Man, Trent, you know, Dave and I
- 6:01had a conversation about this on Swarm cast last week, I think
- 6:07and I I do think he's one of the top five most talented players
- 6:10on this roster just because he's so good at his given skill set,
- 6:14right? Like he's one of the best
- 6:15shooters in the country. Like the defense is, it's not
- 6:20great, but I don't think it's necessarily bad.
- 6:22Like in what we've seen, it hasn't been awful.
- 6:25I'd like to think that he starts to work his way up closer to 15
- 6:29minutes and and earn some of that trust from the staff to
- 6:32play decent defense, to be, you know, maybe a guy that that
- 6:35brings the ball up the floor a little bit here and there.
- 6:39Honestly, as as just a guy who who loves to watch stellar
- 6:42shooters. I, I, I, I want it to be 15
- 6:46minutes a game. I, I'd probably, I'd probably
- 6:48put it in the middle right there at like 10.
- 6:50It's just a, it's just a strange situation in a roster filled
- 6:54with mid major guys. Your high major player is, is,
- 6:59you know, kind of a reserve. It is in a reserve role.
- 7:02I really thought he'd start from from game one and and that's the
- 7:05way it would be with this team. But yeah, it's it's been odd.
- 7:09It's not quite the Emily Rodriguez situation, but but it
- 7:12is. It is odd.
- 7:14What about Fulgaris? Are are we?
- 7:18I'm not disappointed, but did we?
- 7:20At least I thought that, you know, that the transition would
- 7:23have been smoother. He certainly had his moments,
- 7:25but like the rest of the team, he's about to embark in the Big
- 7:2810. There's a bunch of dudes in the
- 7:29Big 10, you know, that are going to look him right in the eye or
- 7:32he's going to look up at Fulgaris's first go round in the
- 7:35Big 10. How do you think it's going so
- 7:36far as a Hawkeye? I think it's OK.
- 7:41I, I, I think we're all in the same boat of wanting to see more
- 7:45from him because he was brought in to be the secondary playmaker
- 7:49to Bennett Sturtz, right? Like you, you don't bring in an
- 7:51all conference player, even from the mid major program who has
- 7:54that type of skill set and don't look to have him be that type of
- 7:59impactful player. Honestly, guys like I, I think
- 8:02having him start would, really would, would change some things
- 8:05offensively for Iowa. Probably take Tavion Banks out
- 8:08of the starting line up. He was the 6th man of the year
- 8:11in in the Missouri Valley Conference last year.
- 8:13Maybe he's going to be a little bit more comfortable, a little
- 8:15bit more consistently impactful off the bench like an Isaiah
- 8:18Howard. I mean, you look at Isaiah
- 8:19Howard starting those first few games, he looked really
- 8:22uncomfortable and coming off the bench, he's looked much more
- 8:25comfortable and much more confident.
- 8:27Who's to say that flipping that with Banks and Alvaro wouldn't
- 8:31ignite something? I would, I would love to see him
- 8:34start. I, I, I don't know that coming
- 8:37off the bench is something that you can look at it as sort of a
- 8:40spark drug plug roll where yeah, he's, he's not starting, but he
- 8:45provides minutes or provides, yeah, minutes and, and scoring
- 8:49like a starter would. But he hasn't done that off the
- 8:51bench. He's he's done something, he's
- 8:53shown some 3 point build shooting ability.
- 8:55He's obviously got a skill set tailor made by, by European
- 9:00skill coaches, if you will. And I, I, I would love to
- 9:05honestly, like, it's kind of the same thing with Brendan Hosson.
- 9:08I just want to see more. I want to see more.
- 9:11I want to give, see him given more responsibility on the court
- 9:15to be who he is. And I don't know, I don't know,
- 9:19you know, obviously I'm not in practice every day.
- 9:21We're not seeing everything. But man, I I just want to see
- 9:24them given that opportunity and see what they can do with it.
- 9:27So Iowa had their two big 10 games as they've struggled with
- 9:30them historically got to win got the win against Maryland and he
- 9:34looked at the beginning slate UCLA pretty good, really good
- 9:37point guard with Donovan Dent UCLA but a very winnable home
- 9:40game. You go to Minnesota feels like
- 9:42that's one that you have to get. And then after that see line.
- 9:45I could we be talking about this team getting off to a really
- 9:49good start when the UCLA Minnesota game and suddenly that
- 9:52Illinois matchup on January 11th that the conversation may be may
- 9:56be starting to shift in the top of maybe we can actually get a
- 9:58full Carver. Man, I hope so.
- 10:02I don't think, well, other than covering a few women's games
- 10:06here and there, I haven't been part of a full Carver yet in in
- 10:09my few years on the beat. So I hope so.
- 10:11Yeah. Like you said, UCLA is a
- 10:13winnable game. You got to beat Minnesota.
- 10:15I mean, from what I've seen in Minnesota, they're not good like
- 10:18at all. I mean almost lost to UW Green
- 10:21Bay. Like took overtime to get
- 10:24Gottlieb's boys. Exactly.
- 10:26Exactly So which by the way, Bettendorf alum plays for UW
- 10:31Green Bay, Kaden Wilkins for high school basketball fans out
- 10:35there. But yeah, you know, I, I think
- 10:38they the, the, the hope is that they at the very least go 2 and
- 10:42O to start the new year going against UCLA, going against
- 10:46Minnesota. And then you set up for an
- 10:48awesome Big 10 battle. You start to figure out where
- 10:51these Big 10 teams start to, you know, find their spot in in the
- 10:56league, if, if you will, you know what echelon they belong
- 10:58in, whether it's middle of the pack, top, middle, top between
- 11:01programs like Iowa and Illinois, who Illinois just lost to
- 11:04Nebraska at home. I mean, and this Nebraska team
- 11:08is showing some pretty good things.
- 11:10Price Stanford playing really well.
- 11:12Is he ever? Yeah.
- 11:14So that that's the that's definitely something to watch.
- 11:17But yeah, I mean, I think we're going to learn a lot about this
- 11:20team in the next few weeks as as they start Big 10 play,
- 11:24obviously Bucknell coming up in in Des Moines and then UMass
- 11:27Lowell and then things start to get rolling.
- 11:30That's where the season starts to get fun.
- 11:32The Illinois game Sunday, the 11th.
- 11:34That's wild card Sunday in the NFL and that the time is TBD.
- 11:39It's going to be carried on Fox. Doesn't that lead you one to
- 11:42believe that that'll be an early tip on Sunday the 11th because
- 11:45Fox has to get in? I'm assuming Fox has a game on
- 11:48that Sunday. I don't know 100%, but it's Fox
- 11:51in the NFL. I'd be surprised if they don't.
- 11:54Doesn't that lead you to 1-1 to believe that that might be a
- 11:57real early tip on Sunday? Yeah, I guess that would make
- 12:01sense. I haven't looked that far ahead
- 12:03from being honest, Ken. And man, I only have so much
- 12:06room for sports in my brain. So I don't pay that much
- 12:09attention to the NFL. But I yeah, I mean, I guess I,
- 12:14I, I think about you. You got a factor in church on
- 12:16Sunday, too, folks. Don't, don't can't forget about
- 12:18Jesus. So, yeah, I don't know.
- 12:21I don't know what time the the game will fit, but yeah, what
- 12:24your, your, I follow your logic. Makes sense?
- 12:26Let's jump into a little football with you, Elliot.
- 12:28Transfer portal still a couple of weeks away from that thing
- 12:30opening up. We're already hearing names,
- 12:32plenty of quarterbacks more than anything starting to get in in
- 12:35there and the bidding process will begin on that front.
- 12:38What's the latest that you're hearing as the transfer portal
- 12:41as it gets set to open a from an Iowa perspective?
- 12:44In fact, let's start there. Do you anticipate that we're
- 12:46going to see a bunch of names enter the portal?
- 12:49Is it just going to be a handful as it's been in years past?
- 12:52I, I would get a handful and you know, we've got our eyes on on a
- 12:56few position groups starting to hear a little bit more about the
- 13:00running back position group and a few possible entries there.
- 13:03So keep an eye on that. Of course, you know, you look at
- 13:06youngsters that haven't been able to quite to breakthrough,
- 13:10but you know, maybe they end up somewhere else and they get some
- 13:13playing time. So I would, I would probably say
- 13:15a handful at this point. I don't think you're going to
- 13:18see any big, you know, super productive players enter the
- 13:22portal. And that's just necessarily
- 13:23there might be in that running backroom.
- 13:25Keep it, like I said, keep an eye on that.
- 13:27But yeah, right, right now, I wouldn't expect more than that.
- 13:31Maybe 10:10 to 11:50, maybe it's not going to be a lot.
- 13:37I mean, there's, there's obvious, you know, walk on.
- 13:39You can probably make their way to the FCS and find some playing
- 13:43time somewhere. But yeah, I wouldn't expect a
- 13:45ton. Hank Brown, maybe?
- 13:49Maybe yeah, I, I think I told you guys last week that I'd
- 13:53actually heard some Yeah at a, at a bulb prep practice.
- 13:57So we'll see. I it's definitely going to be a
- 14:00battle between him and Hecklinski.
- 14:01I don't want to count out Brown yet.
- 14:03No, I hope they both stay in. I hope they both battle.
- 14:05We've talked about edge rusher. Certainly it's going to be a
- 14:09very costly one if they'll go that direction.
- 14:11Wide receiver? What about kicker?
- 14:13The kid from Bettendorf is a Burr.
- 14:16Do they anticipate he's the starter next year taking over
- 14:19for Drew Stevens? I saw Drew Stevens brother was
- 14:22at wazoo. Is there a connection there?
- 14:24What can you tell us at a position that we know for Iowa
- 14:26football is incredibly important?
- 14:29Right. Right now, just based on what
- 14:32we've seen and and what we know with this team, I would expect
- 14:36Iowa to dip into the portal for a kicker.
- 14:38You mentioned Drew Stevens, brother, He was recruited by
- 14:40Iowa out of high school. Iowa was not going to offer him
- 14:44a scholarship. So we opted to go to South
- 14:45Dakota State and then Washington State.
- 14:48Now you're looking at it as well.
- 14:49He's got experience. You need a kicker.
- 14:52He's a couple years older than Burr.
- 14:54I think that would make a lot of sense.
- 14:56I'm not reporting anything, but I do think that would make a lot
- 14:58of sense if that were to come to fruition.
- 15:00Obviously, it would make sense for him to go to Iowa State too,
- 15:03depending on what Conradi does. Could he be a hot?
- 15:08Who knows? That's that's the I he's a walk
- 15:12on. That's true.
- 15:14We'll see. But yeah, I would not be, I
- 15:18would honestly most likely expect I would go after a kicker
- 15:21because Burr has shown some encouraging things.
- 15:24Just, you know, with with Drew, the one thing that you noticed
- 15:27and like open kids, they practice and and spring practice
- 15:30is the ball just comes off Drew's foot different compared
- 15:34to Kaden Burr. Whereas Kaden Burr's ball kind
- 15:36of lost. So he's still working on that
- 15:38power. We're still working on some of
- 15:39those things to add to his frame.
- 15:41So I I would expect I want to go get maybe a little bit older of
- 15:45a kicker that, you know, you can trust in those situations where,
- 15:49you know, you got to beat Nebraska 1310 at at home this
- 15:53coming year, right? So yeah, that that would make
- 15:55sense to me. Vanderbilt will be the opponent.
- 15:58Diego Pavia made NASA of himself, but he does that kind
- 16:01of weekly, so it's not a big surprise on that one.
- 16:04Mentioned this yesterday, Elliot.
- 16:06There's going to be a lot of casual fans going to be flipping
- 16:09on the TV on New Year's Eve, and I think a lot are going to be
- 16:11rooting for the good black and gold, not their black and gold.
- 16:16Yeah, I mean, he went from a lovable underdog.
- 16:19Wow, don't really like this guy anymore.
- 16:23We're rooting for the, the big or I guess monster program that
- 16:29Indiana has become and Fernando Mendoza over him to win the
- 16:32Heisman. So, yeah, too bad, too bad.
- 16:35You know, I, I think I said it last week too, is that
- 16:37Vanderbilt's kind of become my side team, if you will, that I
- 16:40like to watch a little bit. And I I do like the roster.
- 16:43I think Clarkley's a really good coach.
- 16:45But yeah, Diego not not doing himself any favours.
- 16:49Nope, that's for sure. Elliott Clef, good stuff.
- 16:51You certainly did us a favour, as you do most weeks.
- 16:53Elliott, thanks for jumping on. We will talk to you in advance
- 16:57of that football game, the Reliant Quest on the 31st.
- 17:00Thank you Ellie, appreciate you coming on.
- 17:02Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to you and happy holidays.
- 17:05Thanks pal. Back at you.
- 17:07Bye guys. Yep.
- 17:07Good to talk to you, Elliott Clef as we check in on Iowa and
- 17:11where they go. I I did not realize just there's
- 17:15some winnable games right off the fat bat in the big 10.
- 17:17There are there are. I like it.
- 17:19The UCLA game, that it's a Saturday game, it's at home,
- 17:24feels like that's one where get the crowd going, beat a name
- 17:28opponent, pretty solid team. You get Minnesota on the road
- 17:32and suddenly it sets up that Sunday.
- 17:35Or if that plays out, if, if Iowa actually does that, they're
- 17:38sitting at a 13 and 2. They're in the top 25
- 17:41everywhere. All advanced metrics have them
- 17:43as a top 25 team currently. And they're just out of the AP
- 17:46poll. They're in the coaches poll.
- 17:49They're probably in the top at that point, what, 20 maybe in
- 17:52the country. And here comes Illinois.
- 17:54And we know that by basketball rivalry.
- 17:57God love it. And for our listeners in the
- 17:58Quad Cities, you know it better than even we do.
- 18:00But that rivalry, it mattered. And it still can matter.
- 18:04We've seen that recently where there was vitriol.
- 18:07That's got to be an early tip, Trent.
- 18:08I'm sorry. That has to be early.
- 18:10Please be early. As opposed.
- 18:12Well doesn't it depend on what game gets placed where on Fox?
- 18:16Well, there's there's three games on that day and one of
- 18:18them Sunday night. So one of them is going to be
- 18:20noon, one of them is going to be 325.
- 18:23But if it's a noon game, it's not going to be early.
- 18:27I want to watch the damn basketball game.
- 18:30You can. I know you have ADVR.
- 18:31I know, I know, I know. Anyways, it's all about me.
- 18:34But yes, then they play Purdue. But then there's some winnable
- 18:37games. You know, you go take on to
- 18:38Freeze, then here comes Rutgers, USC, there's some winner.
- 18:42This is some. You do get a double play against
- 18:45Nebraska. Do get a double play against
- 18:47Purdue. Only see Michigan, you see him
- 18:49again. Only see him once though.
- 18:51Michigan State. Done right, they are done.
- 18:54Done with Michigan, it's done with.
- 18:55Michigan State. Do not do not have the
- 18:57tiebreaker. You do get to see Maryland
- 18:59again. That's.
- 19:01Winnable Rd. game. You know.
- 19:03Of the road games. And you said Wisconsin got
- 19:05embarrassed last time they played.
- 19:07They lost by 30 to Wisconsin or to Nebraska Rd.
- 19:11Games winnable Minnesota. Yes.
- 19:14Purdue No, no. Can they win in Indiana?
- 19:18I think they can. OK.
- 19:19I think it's a toss up type game.
- 19:21Yeah. Ken, Tom has him a three-point
- 19:23underdog possible, Yeah, at Oregon or Washington.
- 19:26Feels like he got to win one of those split.
- 19:27Yeah, get at least one when you go to the West.
- 19:30Coast. Oh my God, this is right up your
- 19:31elves. You see what time that the game
- 19:33at Washington tips 10:00. Perfect.
- 19:37That is perfect. I love that one.
- 19:40Yeah. You go to Maryland.
- 19:41Winnable. You go to Wisconsin.
- 19:44All right. They're favored to win by one at
- 19:46Ken Palm in that game. Iowa is.
- 19:48Iowa is how about that? At Penn State?
- 19:51They got a ton of winnable Rd. games.
- 19:52They do. They do say you lose at home to
- 19:58Purdue. Yep, maybe one other.
- 20:00You go 8 and two in the Big 10, eight and two, you get Ford Rd.
- 20:05wins. Yeah, 12 and 8.
- 20:08No, you're in. You're well there.
- 20:09You're not just in. No, you're well in.
- 20:11We're talking about. Taking a couple of days off at
- 20:14the Big 10 tournament, Maybe at least one is.
- 20:16It is it better to be a seven seed?
- 20:18Is it better to be a six seed? That's the kind of conversation
- 20:20we're having. Yes, we are.
- 20:22How about? That got to get the hand you.
- 20:23Know what I I saw? I never clicked on it.
- 20:26Damn it. Leonardi came out with that and
- 20:28it was way too early. I get it.
- 20:29But let me see what he where. He's got the Hawks.
- 20:31All right, let's race Leonardi. Come on, Twitter machine.
- 20:37All right, here's his bracketology from today.
- 20:40Well, Iowa states are one seed. How about that?
- 20:43They got the winner of Southern and Norfolk.
- 20:45Street he's only This is the first four.
- 20:49I got them all here. I got the bracket.
- 20:51I got the whole big bracket in front of us.
- 20:52Yes, they get the winner. Iowa State of Southern and
- 20:55Norfolk State good in the round of 32.
- 20:58Either Clemson or Kentucky. Kentucky.
- 21:02That's how Fall. Around a 32.
- 21:04I don't want that to happen. They would play in Saint Louis
- 21:06in this scenario with the Houston region.
- 21:09They are the number one seed in the South region in Houston for
- 21:12the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8 for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- 21:16Iowa shipped out to Philadelphia where they would face a team
- 21:22that clobbered them and a secret scrimmage, the Saint Louis
- 21:25Billikens Good Saint Louis 710 game.
- 21:29Then they get UConn in the round of 32.
- 21:32Well. They're in the dance.
- 21:33They're in the dance, Yes. Can just once Iowa have a
- 21:37bracket open up, we get a 215 upset.
- 21:39And on top of it, for UConn and the most unlikeable figure in
- 21:43college athletics? College basketball.
- 21:46Might be certainly in college basketball.
- 21:49I will take a time out. Bill Bender's next.
- 21:51He covers the He covers college football.
- 21:53That's his primary beat at THE Sporting News.
- 21:55Bill's next Miller in Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:01I'm Mary Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 22:04Network. Wherever you're listening in the
- 22:05state of Iowa. We are grateful that you are
- 22:08coming up at the top of the hour.
- 22:10Off the bench, Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts, take you until
- 22:135:00. Bill Bender covers college
- 22:15football, at least that is his primary beat at
- 22:18sportingnews.com. sportingnews.com for Bill, we've
- 22:21got a full breakdown of the first round of the playoffs up
- 22:25and posted. Hello Bill, Trenton, Ken,
- 22:27compliments of the season to you and to yours.
- 22:30Good to talk to you. Let's get let's get right to
- 22:33these games. Do want to spend a little bit of
- 22:34time at the end maybe speculating a little bit all
- 22:36these quarterbacks and where they may or may not land couple
- 22:39in particular. But on we go to Friday night
- 22:42Bill, I think that's the headliner.
- 22:44I do. We've seen the the Tulane Ole
- 22:47Miss game. Obviously Miami A&M has some
- 22:49buzz, but I think Friday night is the headliner, don't you?
- 22:54I do, but I might be more excited to watch Miami, Texas
- 22:58A&M and I don't ask me why. I just you know what I mean?
- 23:01Like I I think that might be the more exciting game with
- 23:04quarterbacks. The defensive line, Oklahoma,
- 23:07Alabama is the headliner, no question.
- 23:09And it will probably be another defensive slugfest like last
- 23:13two, especially if miss here and Simpson both under 60%
- 23:19completion percentages in the last four games.
- 23:22So you know who's who, use the break for their advantage then.
- 23:26I like Alabama in the game. I don't love the pick.
- 23:31Need to see him run the football and not turn the ball over.
- 23:34Just got to have a feeling that Miami too on some level, where
- 23:38when you've been told you don't belong to two weeks, I think it
- 23:41heightens the focus. I'm right there with you.
- 23:44I think we're going to get a couple of good games and setting
- 23:47the scene for something that I think is going to be good.
- 23:50Before we get to the games though, what we saw, the vitriol
- 23:53of the committee, the vitriol of the TV show.
- 23:57Or do we need to go to 16? Are we going to get to 24?
- 24:00What do you think the fallout is initially?
- 24:03People are losing their minds, freaking out.
- 24:05Is there going to be a fallout? Are we already going to get
- 24:08bracket creep? Easy for me to say, and already
- 24:11advanced to 16. What is the fallout from what we
- 24:14saw a week and a half ago? I'm not looking forward to
- 24:17Saturday night. I'm looking I'm not looking
- 24:23forward to the tweets about if JMU gets grilled by Oregon or if
- 24:31Tulane gets beat in similar fashion like they did to old
- 24:33Mess. I mean, because we're going to
- 24:35spend a lot of time saying things like, well, Texas should
- 24:39be in or well, Notre Dame should be in.
- 24:41And you know, we did that last year on some level.
- 24:44But I actually think it's going to be worse.
- 24:46And answer your question, Trent, I think this is going to.
- 24:54Yes, we're losing you, Bill. Bill, we're going to call you
- 24:56right back, call you right back. We are we're breaking up.
- 25:00I want to get that answer. We got right to that point and
- 25:02then they still all these years and it's not a Bill Bender
- 25:07thing. It's a it's a cell phone thing.
- 25:08It is. I'm with you.
- 25:09I think Bill makes an excellent point.
- 25:11I think the vitriol is going to be fast and furious on Saturday
- 25:14night. Look at ESPN knew it as well.
- 25:17They're they were up against the NFL.
- 25:19If if they thought that this was a, you know, a good game, they
- 25:22wouldn't have been scared to put, you know, I don't think
- 25:25anyways one of the maybe the Miami A&M game in that time
- 25:29slot, but instead they're going to give us this game.
- 25:31Where's a 21 1/2 point 21 and a half 22 points point spread in
- 25:36this game? Bill, sorry about that.
- 25:37We were we were losing. You finish your point on Trent's
- 25:40question, if you would. No, you know, I just think, you
- 25:43know, you know, we'll be arguing about teams that should be in
- 25:49instead of looking at the teams that will be in.
- 25:51And it will probably push us to 16 sooner rather than later.
- 25:55Yeah, I think you're probably right.
- 25:57Do you give any of the two big dogs a chance to even get make
- 26:00this a close? Maybe with the kind of
- 26:03uncertainty maybe that's going through old miss with Lane
- 26:06Kiffin leaving, etcetera, might that be make a make for a better
- 26:10game? Tulane's losing their head coach
- 26:12as well, might that be of the two with the big, with the big
- 26:16spreads, might that be the better of the two?
- 26:20I think so. I think Tulane looked good
- 26:23enough in the American Conference championship and they
- 26:25weren't a team that was looking like, hey, our coaches leaving,
- 26:30they look very focused. I think one thing to keep in
- 26:32mind, you know, with Lane, it is going to be different for Ole
- 26:35Miss, a different experience. Ritz laughed in that first
- 26:38meeting, missed his first nine passes.
- 26:41So maybe Tulane changes up how they tackle, miss a little bit,
- 26:45can keep on Lacey. That'll be the key.
- 26:49But to your point, of the two, I think that one could be more
- 26:53competitive. JMU runs the football well, but
- 26:56if they can't get a running game going against Oregon, it could
- 26:58be a long night at Austin Stadium.
- 27:00Yeah, that one has the feeling in Oregon, they've been able to
- 27:03put it on teams in the past, and I want to go to Ohio State.
- 27:07We're not going to see them, of course, until New Year's Eve,
- 27:09when they'll take on the winner of the 710 matchup.
- 27:12But the Buckeyes after losing to Indiana, and it was different
- 27:17because it's Indiana, it's not Michigan.
- 27:18But boy, it felt a whole lot to me like Michigan games the last
- 27:23couple of years where they were very conservative.
- 27:27They almost played into the style that Indiana wanted them
- 27:30to play. What is it about Ryan Day?
- 27:33He's got more talent than anybody in the country year
- 27:35after year after year. And boy, there is just some
- 27:37moments where you say what in God's neighbor you doing?
- 27:40And and felt like another one to be against the Hoosiers.
- 27:43Yeah, you know, a couple second guess calls in the red zone.
- 27:46The goal I, I'll tell you this, our our all American team will
- 27:52be out tomorrow. There are quite a few.
- 27:55I mean, spoiler alert, there are Ohio State guys all over it
- 27:58couple Hawks on there too. You know that you'll look
- 28:00forward to seeing them. But yeah, you know, so there's
- 28:05still pressure on them. I think they would be the
- 28:08betting favorite. If they're not, they should be
- 28:10the betting favorite to win this thing.
- 28:11But you know, Indiana matched the intensity and kept
- 28:14everything in front and made Jillian saying indecisive, which
- 28:18was the first time that happened all year.
- 28:20So I absolutely think I was beatable.
- 28:24Kind of lines up that they might play Georgia in the semi finals
- 28:27and then a lot of people want that game to happen.
- 28:30I will say this about Georgia. They're the out of those SEC,
- 28:34they're the one that has found a way to win all year.
- 28:36They run the ball well. Gunner Stockton reminds me of
- 28:38Gunner, gunner, Stetson Bennett. They all have outstanding
- 28:42quarterback names down there. But, you know, I think he's
- 28:45really made good decisions with the ball season.
- 28:48Yeah, I do. Are we any closer to at least
- 28:50identifying a couple of names that actually make sense at
- 28:54Michigan? Bill, where are you with the
- 28:56Michigan higher and do you have a couple of names maybe that
- 29:00that you think might have a better chance than some of the
- 29:02others? Well, I you know, Kenny
- 29:04Dillingham's interesting and you know, here's one thing I'm going
- 29:07to get on the soapbox for two seconds.
- 29:10I don't think coaches should be pegged to their answer.
- 29:13Like, you know what, like they're we're making Kenny
- 29:16Dillingham say he's staying so we can RIP him if he goes, you
- 29:21know what I mean? And if somebody presented you
- 29:23with a lot of money, you're going to weigh that opportunity
- 29:26while trying to stay at the job you have.
- 29:28And I think Kaylin de Boer is probably going to go through the
- 29:30same thing, Jed Ish on some level after their bowl game.
- 29:34But no, Kenny Dillingham is an interesting fit, young,
- 29:37charismatic, He's done a very nice job at Arizona State.
- 29:40Whoever they hire, I think 110, they need to break away from the
- 29:44hardball era completely. So too many scandals at this
- 29:49point. And then two, you do a culture
- 29:52builder type that can work with the quarterbacks.
- 29:54I mean, if you're worried about Bryce Underwood or a five star
- 29:58running back leaving, you're you're worried about the wrong
- 30:01things. They need to clean up culture
- 30:02there. No question.
- 30:03No more scandals. Well, we found out that Dylan
- 30:05Rayola is leaving Nebraska and with it, well, there's going to
- 30:09be a lot of quarterbacks that are going to get paid.
- 30:11What is a potential landing spot?
- 30:12What's the place that makes sense for Rayola?
- 30:15A guy that we know, he's got an arm, there's no doubt about
- 30:17about it. Not a whole lot of athleticism
- 30:19and speed in today's college football game.
- 30:21Where does a fit make sense for Ayola?
- 30:25LSU, Can you imagine Dylan Ryola and Lane Kiffin?
- 30:31You know that that can happen. I can see it.
- 30:34He has 31 touchdowns, 17 interceptions for two seasons.
- 30:37The talents there, though, and and it is the old man of me kind
- 30:41of watches these announcements and like really, we're
- 30:44announcing that Jayden my office staying at his school, is that
- 30:47what we're doing now? And resigning, resigning.
- 30:50I'm sorry I got it wrong. You know, this is the world we
- 30:55live in though, where you retain the quarterback and it's almost
- 30:58like musical chairs in some aspects.
- 31:01DJ Lagway is another interesting one to me.
- 31:03I mean, it just didn't pan out at Florida for whatever reason.
- 31:07Sorry about the music in the background.
- 31:08The washer is apparently done. I think that's a context clue
- 31:13for my wife while she's gone. Yeah, good stuff.
- 31:16Bill Bender, Sporting News. Bill, thanks for jumping on for
- 31:19us. Appreciate what you do.
- 31:20Merry Christmas to you and yours.
- 31:22Have a happy holiday season. Thank you, Bill Bender.
- 31:24Appreciate it. Hey.
- 31:25Anytime guys, have a great week. Take care bill benders.
- 31:28We struggled with the cell phone.
- 31:30It was unfortunate but some good info of the top 4 seeds.
- 31:34Top 4 who? Who's jettison first?
- 31:39Maybe from the semi final? What would that be?
- 31:43Semi final? Who doesn't make it?
- 31:46Indiana, Ohio State? Georgia.
- 31:48Texas Tech? I guess Texas Tech would be the
- 31:51answer because. They'd get they get Oregon,
- 31:53yeah, by far the most difficult game that they would have.
- 31:56I think that's the easy. So let's take away the easy
- 31:59answer, OK of the top. Three.
- 32:01All right everyone, now you're into.
- 32:02ATC that a boy so Indiana against either Alabama or
- 32:07Oklahoma. OK.
- 32:09Georgia, Ole Miss Ole Miss dispatch is too late.
- 32:12You know, they kind of got best past the weirdness of the Week
- 32:151. Ole Miss had them beat in
- 32:16Athens. Had them beat.
- 32:19Does Ohio State a cinch against either of their opponents?
- 32:23I don't think so. If it's Miami, Miami I.
- 32:27Wanna see that game on New Year's Eve, Trent?
- 32:29They are. I wanna see so.
- 32:30Talented upfront. What they did against Notre
- 32:33Dame, that was a long time ago. Did we over value Ohio State
- 32:38during the season? They were they've been the
- 32:41favorite the entire year. They they struggle against Texas
- 32:44in week one. A lot of teams struggle in week
- 32:461. I get it.
- 32:47They haven't really had the most dauntingest schedule until they
- 32:50got, it was easy, OK, until they got to the Big 10 championship
- 32:53game and then they finally played an opponent with a pulse.
- 32:56We saw what happened. They've been the favorite all
- 32:59year long. And I, I, I don't love them.
- 33:02I don't. I don't love the offense.
- 33:04I don't love Ryan Day in a big spot.
- 33:07Yeah, and you should love the offense because they got a
- 33:09couple of NFL receivers. I think all three of those
- 33:13teams, you can paint a realistic scenario where they lose,
- 33:17including the number one Indiana Hoosiers.
- 33:19What don't you like about them? They took another injury on the
- 33:22defensive line. Yeah, they did the depth that
- 33:24they have and Ohio State played a style that worked in that.
- 33:28Maybe it's too much that I go back to October and what
- 33:30happened in Kennick Stadium. I would have them beat.
- 33:33They did. I would have them beat in that
- 33:35game. But every team's allowed one of
- 33:37those. But I agree with you, I would
- 33:38have them beat. And Alabama, if they returned
- 33:40Jim Miller, 'cause they couldn't run the ball against.
- 33:42No, no. And he's going to play,
- 33:43apparently. But what happened?
- 33:44What has happened to Simpson? Well, it's been something all
- 33:48year long, I've been telling you.
- 33:49He led the country in fumbles when you have that.
- 33:52But he went through that stretch in October that he looked all
- 33:55right. There's the Heisman winner, or
- 33:56if not the Heisman winner, I thought this was a guy that
- 33:59could win the Heisman. And I never got to that point,
- 34:02but if all of a sudden William starts to get involved again,
- 34:05which has been a weird season for him, Alabama can absolutely.
- 34:09And you know what I'm saying, Alabama could beat Indiana in
- 34:14football. This isn't a basketball
- 34:16conversation in football. But I don't think it's a
- 34:19stretch. I don't think Oklahoma can.
- 34:21Oklahoma can only win it one style and I don't think Indiana
- 34:23would let them play that style. What about Georgia?
- 34:27I think they're fine. I do too.
- 34:29I think they're fine. I do too.
- 34:30I think it's the two Big 10 schools.
- 34:32I put only against Miami, though.
- 34:34I don't think A&M can beat Ohio State.
- 34:36I think Miami could, and I think Alabama can beat Indiana.
- 34:40What order 1221 Big 10 and if that would happen, if we would
- 34:48see both Indiana and Ohio State lose in the quarterfinals, oh,
- 34:51the SEC wonks would be going. Crazy, that's for sure.
- 34:55Marie Condon, Trents plays of the day there.
- 34:57Next, you're listening to Des Moines Sports Station one O 6.3
- 35:01KXNO. I'm Marie Condon.
- 35:11Final couple of minutes. Salute to Veterans bowl tonight,
- 35:14Trent. Oh yeah.
- 35:16I'm in. You are.
- 35:17Yeah, this is one that I had circle.
- 35:19This is one of my Friday picks. Still, you still got one left?
- 35:23Yes. So how did we do against the
- 35:25boys in the afternoon? I think we got him.
- 35:27Well, I was awful so. I think we got him.
- 35:29I think I carried you again. Well, again, the week before I
- 35:32went five and oh, that was the first.
- 35:33You went one and. Four, I know, but that was the
- 35:35first time. All year.
- 35:36Don't say it again. I've been carrying your ass most
- 35:40of this contest since we tried to beat these knuckleheads.
- 35:43Well, it's not difficult. It hasn't been so far.
- 35:46Look at us go, you know what, they're going to snap on off and
- 35:48get us in the last couple of weeks of the season.
- 35:51So what is the number tonight? I well, there's been a ton of
- 35:54steam on the Gamecocks. Jacksonville State is now the
- 35:57favorite. And who do you have?
- 35:58I have Jacksonville State. And you're getting points.
- 36:01I'm getting 2 1/2. All right, I bet this one.
- 36:03This was one of my first bets of the season, the bowl season, and
- 36:07at the time they were getting 3 1/2, so we're in good shape for
- 36:13these purposes, though today it's -1 1/2.
- 36:16Do what you will with that information with Jacksonville
- 36:18State against Troy so they can run the ball.
- 36:21That's all I know. Can they?
- 36:22They can run the ball good, got a good running back.
- 36:25Where are you going to give us that website you go to for the
- 36:27latest injuries, the latest affections, in, in or out?
- 36:32Not playing play because I don't know how.
- 36:34You bet these games. I truly don't because we're
- 36:37going to see changes right up until kick off.
- 36:39It is on the Action Network. It's always on the front screen
- 36:42there. If you just Google Action
- 36:44Network bowl opt in or Stuckey, he is the author of it.
- 36:49Bowl game, Stuckey, it'll pop up there, but it's on the Action
- 36:52Network. And yes, it is a necessity as
- 36:55you're going through and trying to figure out who's in, who's
- 36:58out, who's not going to play. Now, we got a decent team
- 37:01playing tomorrow, South Florida, but Byron Brown, the great
- 37:06quarterback is not going to play.
- 37:08He's going to serve it as assistant coach in the game.
- 37:11But all this information is stacked up there.
- 37:13So thank you to Stuckey, who is awesome.
- 37:15I really enjoy Stuckey and does really good work and keeps us
- 37:18updated on at least as much information as he can get on all
- 37:21these ridiculous bowl games. What else you betting on?
- 37:25College basketball tonight. Not as bad as you were painting
- 37:27earlier. It's not.
- 37:28Great though is it Louisville, TN does nothing for you.
- 37:32Yeah, OK. I'm going to grab the Cardinal
- 37:33plus the three and a half of that one Georgia Tech Marist.
- 37:37No, I can't believe you're not going to be locked and loaded
- 37:39then won't ACC Network plus tonight for that one, grab 7 and
- 37:43Marist. Georgia Tech's not very good.
- 37:46They're gonna play most state tonight.
- 37:47Missouri State. They have hit the skins of late.
- 37:49Losers of four, their last five. Or Roberts on the other side,
- 37:52Not very good. Lay the four and a half there.
- 37:54And finally, it's the NBA Cup. And if you know one thing about
- 37:57me, I got to be playing the NBA cup -2 1/2.

- 38:05Yes, he can't wait for. He's an NBA fan.
- 38:08KG was this guy growing up. I guess that's where he got it.
- 38:10But Yep. But I'm sure it's banged out,

- 38:16Wenban, Yama. Banged out.
- 38:19I would love to see a real shot of what the.
- 38:21Right. I would too.
- 38:22I. Would, Well, we'll have somebody
- 38:23there. Yeah, let's give them have Kale
- 38:25snap us a picture and we can put it up on social media and see.
- 38:28Because I would just guess and it's just a guess that it's not
- 38:31going to be shoulder to shoulder in the upper.
- 38:33Like that? What when you and I and Kale and
- 38:36Sage went to see the the Olympic teams, right?
- 38:40Team USA against Team Canada. That was great.
- 38:42It was fun, except when we tried to get out of there.
- 38:44That wasn't much fun. You did not handle situations
- 38:47like that very. Well, no, sure didn't.
- 38:49But you know what? I got us home.
- 38:50You did got you did get us home. Paid a big price, but we got us
- 38:53home anyways. That's if.

- 39:15for them. We had our Wednesday, January
- 39:17set with Mitch Holtis. I know for the last six years.
- 39:21Yes. Not this season, no.
- 39:23Dave Sinican. Not the same, but I like
