- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: All Right, episode forty four, coming at you here on
- 0:24Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Hey V and JD. Right to rock.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Is it NHL season yet? JD? This is truly the
- 0:29Speaker 1: dog days of August where you're just lurching towards getting
- 0:32Speaker 1: some hockey talk going. We do have a little bit
- 0:33Speaker 1: of hockey talk coming up, by the way, was not
- 0:35Speaker 1: expecting a little Hextall conversation with Jack Hextall conversation. On
- 0:39Speaker 1: a serious note, we'll be honoring the Gaudreaux brothers and
- 0:41Speaker 1: our special guest day is Danton Cole movie talk. We'll
- 0:44Speaker 1: get into Eddington as well. But this is kind of
- 0:46Speaker 1: that point. JD is a hockey finder going. Okay, we're
- 0:48Speaker 1: almost a couple more weeks training camps, open season previews,
- 0:51Speaker 1: blah blah blah.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I feel like at this point, you know,
- 0:56Speaker 2: the fans that are still listening here to us in August,
- 1:00Speaker 2: they're just waiting for the season to start, just the
- 1:02Speaker 2: way we're all waiting for the seasons to start. It
- 1:04Speaker 2: is one of those things, all the all the storylines,
- 1:07Speaker 2: we're fishing for storylines and things like that, and we're
- 1:09Speaker 2: giving our predictions, but you know, it just goes to
- 1:13Speaker 2: show you that these kind of months are are are
- 1:15Speaker 2: when things start to ramp up. And I think right
- 1:18Speaker 2: around the beginning of September is when really things start
- 1:22Speaker 2: to go and we start feeling the training camp coming in.
- 1:24Speaker 2: But but yeah, let's just let's just let's just get
- 1:27Speaker 2: us there already, because you're on vacation right.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I am. We're all here on the West Coast here
- 1:31Speaker 1: in the Bay Area with my wife's family. So we
- 1:33Speaker 1: uh just hanging out a little barbecue, a little splosh.
- 1:36Speaker 1: San fran Yeah, I flew to San Francisco. She lives
- 1:39Speaker 1: in My assister Lunch lives in South San Jose. So
- 1:42Speaker 1: hopefully we'll see some Demurse fifty five jerseys today. The
- 1:44Speaker 1: Santa Cruz Boardwalk. That's the goal.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Youah, oh, so you're up in Santa Cruz. Amazing. That's incredible.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That's like, that's my old stopping grounds for years. Go
- 1:53Speaker 2: to go to Willow Glenn, go to the table, Willow
- 1:55Speaker 2: Glennay a little Willow Glen. Go to the table. Okay,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and then oh god, I'll think of a sandwich space.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I gotta give to you, but it's it's a it's
- 2:05Speaker 2: a sneaky good city for food. Man Jose is what
- 2:07Speaker 2: they call it.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned that because years ago I had
- 2:11Speaker 1: some buddies were traveling Canadian media when the Sharks were
- 2:14Speaker 1: in the Cup Final. They're like, I go one, they go,
- 2:16Speaker 1: I go, that's great, I go. I really liked the
- 2:17Speaker 1: Bay Area. It's beautiful, weather, good five people greet that,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but not a lot of a lot of talents. I go,
- 2:22Speaker 1: it's Silicon Valley. It's a lot of nerds.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, the the guys that were probably on
- 2:28Speaker 2: location too, from the from the who was going? Who
- 2:31Speaker 2: were there? There was just some MENHL guys.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Going there ts N guys that were producing.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Nerds too.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Anyways, Fine, it's not like they're a wheeling beef anyway.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, t s N.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yikes. But that's is that what they called the
- 2:48Speaker 1: man Jose. They go, they go if you look at
- 2:49Speaker 1: the fast So.
- 2:51Speaker 2: They did initially back in the day, not back in
- 2:54Speaker 2: the day, but they I listened. When I was there,
- 2:56Speaker 2: I was was young and single and and we had
- 2:58Speaker 2: a great team, and I mean listen, we we had
- 3:01Speaker 2: no issues. It was a great city. I thought it.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You know, it's gotten expensive, it's got way too expensive
- 3:08Speaker 2: now and people have started to move, so you're not
- 3:11Speaker 2: seeing as many young people there. But it's I think
- 3:14Speaker 2: there's gonna be a little bit of a renaissance that
- 3:16Speaker 2: area of San Francisco. Everything with AI, you know, not
- 3:19Speaker 2: giving people market advice now, but you know if you
- 3:22Speaker 2: look where AI is going. But we're talking, we're really
- 3:25Speaker 2: fishing for stories here because we're talking about AI and
- 3:28Speaker 2: San Jose real estate market.
- 3:31Speaker 1: By low Yeah, I mean that's definitely a it's definitely
- 3:34Speaker 1: a good conversation because you're right, it's expensive as some
- 3:36Speaker 1: of these house prices out there. Mcteese like, I get it,
- 3:38Speaker 1: but it's just gone to a different level over the
- 3:40Speaker 1: last ten to fifteen years, having's exploded one under.
- 3:43Speaker 2: We've got the sorts out there though.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Just hopefully. Yeah, I got to ask one of our
- 3:47Speaker 1: cousins that we grab a racket, go get go, get
- 3:50Speaker 1: a set in. By the way, nhl' strip's going back
- 3:52Speaker 1: to posting weekly after Labor Day, so we're almost at
- 3:55Speaker 1: that point. We'll strict giving you weekly content again. But
- 3:57Speaker 1: as we're lurching our way through August, we're as JD said,
- 4:01Speaker 1: fishing for a little bit of content here. I do
- 4:03Speaker 1: want to say out a serious don't we been talking
- 4:05Speaker 1: about the Goodrow brothers. Now we're coming up with the
- 4:06Speaker 1: one year anniversary of the loss of Johnny and Matthew.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's still heartbreaking to think about. Saw some of the
- 4:12Speaker 1: interview of the widows there on Good Morning America talking
- 4:15Speaker 1: with Will Reeve to commemorate what would have been Johnny's
- 4:18Speaker 1: thirty second birthday, Johnny's widow, Meredith and Matthews would of Maddeline.
- 4:21Speaker 1: They did reveal the formation of the John and Matthew
- 4:24Speaker 1: Gudreau Foundations, So that foundation was officially launched in March
- 4:28Speaker 1: to help preserve the memory of the Goodrow brothers by
- 4:31Speaker 1: quote supporting projects and initiatives that align with the values
- 4:33Speaker 1: and passions that they champion during their lives. So it's
- 4:36Speaker 1: really a great tribute, and you know, maybe there's more
- 4:40Speaker 1: thought right now on hockey. Can even an award after
- 4:41Speaker 1: Johnny Hockey. I don't know if that's really the step
- 4:43Speaker 1: you want to go, but it's really nice to see
- 4:46Speaker 1: the strength of them and the fact that they've been
- 4:47Speaker 1: publicly out there. You know, it really starts to kind
- 4:50Speaker 1: of make their memory as strong as possible in the
- 4:51Speaker 1: public eye.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, the two widows kind of
- 4:56Speaker 2: finding closure and finding ways to kind of move forward
- 4:59Speaker 2: in a positive manner. I think is just is very
- 5:02Speaker 2: good and it's good to see them creating this foundation.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And you know, I don't quite know what you know,
- 5:10Speaker 2: award you could you can maybe put Johnny under or
- 5:15Speaker 2: you know, his brother the name itself, but I think
- 5:18Speaker 2: just kind of doing what we've been doing and honoring
- 5:21Speaker 2: him in as many ways as possible and keeping his
- 5:24Speaker 2: memory alive, because you know, we've kind of set him
- 5:26Speaker 2: multiple times in the podcast just gone but not forgotten,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and I think this is a beautiful way to kind
- 5:31Speaker 2: of continue that sentiment.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Absolutely. As far as actual hockey action took place last
- 5:36Speaker 1: week the Helenka Gretzky Cup stage in Czechia and Slovakia,
- 5:40Speaker 1: so the term of previously the Under eighteen Cup, then
- 5:42Speaker 1: the Helenka Cup before becoming the Helnka Gretzky Cup, whatever
- 5:45Speaker 1: you want to call it, featuring the world's best players
- 5:47Speaker 1: age seventeen and younger, and the first time this is
- 5:49Speaker 1: two thousand and three, the Americans do come out on top.
- 5:52Speaker 1: They won goal by beating Sweden five through the championship game.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Player of the Game honors going to Jack Hextall and
- 5:58Speaker 1: before you wait, related to Rodny Leah Brian No, Hextall
- 6:02Speaker 1: does not appear to be related to the famous hockey family.
- 6:04Speaker 1: We all know he's attending Michigan State in twenty twenty six,
- 6:07Speaker 1: but in terms of previous standouts at the tournament, Matthew, Mitchkoff,
- 6:11Speaker 1: Cole Profetti, Nathan McKinnon, Tyler Sagan, Alex Ovechkin, gdie, what
- 6:15Speaker 1: do you got for me on the Helenka Gretzky Cup.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Well, you know, good job by Jack Hextall. But I
- 6:23Speaker 2: love that little thid bit of Is he related No,
- 6:27Speaker 2: not at all. It's like me and Jack Demerz. It's
- 6:29Speaker 2: just waste of a last name. You think it is
- 6:33Speaker 2: no famous ties to it. Listen, it's it's kind of
- 6:36Speaker 2: always in a weird spot, the Helenkas. So, you know,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I feel like it doesn't get the coverage that it
- 6:40Speaker 2: deserves because it's a good tournament. I mean, it's very competitive.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I mean, if anybody watched that tournament, you know, watching
- 6:48Speaker 2: the US win and in the way in the fashion
- 6:50Speaker 2: they did and you know, especially beating Canada. I mean
- 6:54Speaker 2: they took that game like it was it was the
- 6:57Speaker 2: Olympics final. So it's really it's really something I think
- 7:02Speaker 2: anytime you I think any tournament we're guys represent their
- 7:06Speaker 2: country is something that should get more viewership. And I
- 7:08Speaker 2: think it is a very good format and it's always fun.
- 7:11Speaker 2: People get excited when they're watching you know, Sweden Finland
- 7:14Speaker 2: or you know Sweden Canada, you know check USA. It's
- 7:19Speaker 2: just something that kind of brings out the energy of
- 7:22Speaker 2: of of the fan base and in a way that
- 7:25Speaker 2: you know, the Stanley Cup finals do. So it's it's
- 7:28Speaker 2: one of those things. It just makes it a little bit
- 7:29Speaker 2: more high stakes when when it's for countries. So I
- 7:31Speaker 2: like it. I thought it was it was a great tournament.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I thought that game against Canada was US Canada was
- 7:38Speaker 2: was very very good and as advertised, because anytime you
- 7:42Speaker 2: get the two big dogs together, they don't.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Bark right right exactly anytime USA Canada's evolved as surely
- 7:49Speaker 1: right now, as you said, people just starve for hockey's
- 7:51Speaker 1: if you're a fan of hockey, you're gonna be watching
- 7:52Speaker 1: something that's there. As far as being on the ice.
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's right, our boy JD back on the ice. Saw
- 7:57Speaker 1: on the instagium. You're posting the annual pro Am sun
- 8:00Speaker 1: Life event in Quebec City. Players were in Canadians and
- 8:03Speaker 1: or deeks them. I love that you're out there with
- 8:05Speaker 1: Steven Stamcos, Jonathan marchisso, David Deharnay direct Brossard. How is
- 8:10Speaker 1: the event looking? You had a blast.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Well, I've been on the ice a couple of times now.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Uh you know. I did a shoot with the NHL
- 8:18Speaker 2: and body armor for with Jordan Cayrou a couple of
- 8:22Speaker 2: weeks before that pro Am needed to get on the ice,
- 8:24Speaker 2: touch the ice. I was with Cole Profetti and Jordan
- 8:27Speaker 2: Cairou and then they're gonna they're gonna air that in October.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's it's we kind of went on the ice before
- 8:31Speaker 2: I get into the sunlight. Not to talk all about me,
- 8:34Speaker 2: which we're gonna do, but uh no.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Just pointing out the United as rusty as some might thip,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you'ple thin can hang up the skates. That's say you're
- 8:40Speaker 1: still on the ice.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I mean, geez, I did that. I did that, uh
- 8:45Speaker 2: that shoot with body armor, and then I was on
- 8:47Speaker 2: the ice for this tournament. I was like, fuck, I
- 8:50Speaker 2: make mate might take a comeback here. Jonathan Tames can
- 8:53Speaker 2: do it taking three years off. I'm right on that cuss.
- 8:55Speaker 2: So if anybody's looking big Daddy's coming back. Light up.
- 9:00Speaker 2: A few guys play a nice ten minutes a night.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Exactly one year deal depth defense. It's been great in
- 9:05Speaker 1: the room. No one's going to tee that.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, give me one hundred thousand dollars and then give
- 9:10Speaker 2: me every signing bonus under the sun and I'll get you.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I'll get you, I'll get you to the playoffs. But yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 2: it was. It was a good tournament. It's fun to
- 9:17Speaker 2: see you know, the pro am sun Life uh in
- 9:20Speaker 2: Quebec City. They do a great job. I used to
- 9:23Speaker 2: do it when I was, you know, a lot younger
- 9:25Speaker 2: and starting out in the league and you know, just life.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I missed it for you know, five six years, and
- 9:31Speaker 2: they reached out this year and there was It's funny
- 9:33Speaker 2: because there's there was two games. So you mentioned, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 2: you mentioned the likes of Stamkos and Jonathan Marcia show.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I wasn't in that game. I was in the LEAs,
- 9:44Speaker 2: which is the old guys, the retired guys. So I
- 9:47Speaker 2: was playing with like I was playing with like you know,
- 9:50Speaker 2: Patrice Bergron was there, Derek Pissard, David Derrihett Derenet, Alan
- 9:55Speaker 2: Colti of the Nordiaks. There's a bunch of Nordiaks. Sylvan
- 9:58Speaker 2: la Fay like not Sylvana Fay, I'm sorry, but no, no, no, no,
- 10:02Speaker 2: alant Coote, Eric Schwuinard like like just the guys that
- 10:08Speaker 2: played years ago, and that ain't will tell you who's
- 10:12Speaker 2: who's you know, one of the original rdiques and.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Uh legend think of the stasties. Now, that's amazing that era.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeahs hockey. Yeah, And he was taking the draw, so
- 10:22Speaker 2: he was taking the opening face off, like the you know,
- 10:24Speaker 2: the commemorative face off whatever, the ceremonial puck drop.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I like, by the way, he Jady's sixty eight years old,
- 10:30Speaker 1: still playing hockey.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah. So he was taking the draw against David Darnett
- 10:35Speaker 2: and he was on the Quebec side, so and we're
- 10:37Speaker 2: in Quebec, so he's gonna win the draw, he's so
- 10:40Speaker 2: he goes and wins the draw and then there's a
- 10:41Speaker 2: pause and he just leans into David Deren and he
- 10:45Speaker 2: goes in French. He goes, I can't bend down and
- 10:47Speaker 2: get that.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Puck sixty eight year old man, What are we expecting here?
- 10:53Speaker 2: Man? He was moving. I five fucking locked him up, though,
- 10:56Speaker 2: Oh I ran him on.
- 11:01Speaker 1: So many out there.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Fun event. It was a really fun event, and it
- 11:08Speaker 2: was it was done well good cause, you know, children's
- 11:12Speaker 2: cancer and and and really good stuff.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Just to thought. Will Folger, one of our great producers
- 11:17Speaker 1: at MLB Network, just went for the first time with
- 11:18Speaker 1: his family to Montreal and Quebec City. So I said,
- 11:21Speaker 1: what's the scouting report? He goes, We liked it, and
- 11:23Speaker 1: I was like, little understand. He said, no, that was good.
- 11:25Speaker 2: He goes.
- 11:25Speaker 1: He goes, Montrell was nice, he goes, it felt more
- 11:27Speaker 1: like an American city, like it was cool. It was
- 11:29Speaker 1: Quebec City definitely felt more like you felt different. I said, yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He said. The one tricky thing was as soon as
- 11:34Speaker 1: they say they're from America, you can kind of get
- 11:36Speaker 1: that hairy eyeballs, you know, but we're not Trumpers, like,
- 11:38Speaker 1: oh okay, good godess It's like it's not not the
- 11:40Speaker 1: best time for American's traveling. But he said, uh maybe,
- 11:43Speaker 1: so he said, he goes. Food wise he goes, we weren't.
- 11:45Speaker 1: We were hesitant on the poutine. I go, why because
- 11:47Speaker 1: we're just not because this sounds ridiculous. We're just not
- 11:49Speaker 1: big French fried people. So I'm like, we're really that
- 11:51Speaker 1: excited for French fries. He goes. So eventually we're driving
- 11:54Speaker 1: at my one Sone's like, oh, we gotta try the
- 11:55Speaker 1: poutine and it was like a McDonald's. But we're not
- 11:57Speaker 1: gonna have that. Go tell you at least went to
- 11:58Speaker 1: Saint Hubert's like, tell me you did something.
- 12:00Speaker 2: So you get it. There's like a million of them.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so I don't know what place they went to.
- 12:03Speaker 1: He said they did have it was good, but he
- 12:05Speaker 1: was like, you know, it's not really much. Alem like, yeah,
- 12:07Speaker 1: but but you did like Old Quebec. He's like, here's
- 12:09Speaker 1: the thing about Ubec city. I said, my wife, being American,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I go, she likes Montreal, but Quebec City, especially Old Quebec,
- 12:14Speaker 1: you think, is unbelievable. Like everyone who goes to Old
- 12:16Speaker 1: Quebec is taken away. Anybody who can't go to Europe
- 12:18Speaker 1: just be goes. I'll just go to Old Quebec.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I go.
- 12:20Speaker 1: It's like a honeymoon. Spot in North America. He's like, no,
- 12:22Speaker 1: he goes. Listen that four and a half kilometer area
- 12:24Speaker 1: going to shot to a front and Actuly, that'll take
- 12:26Speaker 1: your breath away. You're seeing castles and ship from the
- 12:28Speaker 1: sixteenth century. It's awesome.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the Canadian little piece of history that it's
- 12:34Speaker 2: to your point, it feels so much like Europe. And yeah,
- 12:37Speaker 2: it's it's as expensive in terms of flying into that
- 12:40Speaker 2: fucking airport. It's so so gosh turned expensive to flying
- 12:43Speaker 2: in there. It's a small international airport. But uh yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 2: my parents are there and I was that's where that
- 12:50Speaker 2: sun Life game was and I spent a week there
- 12:53Speaker 2: with family, and it's it's beautiful. It's it's really a
- 12:56Speaker 2: nice place. You know, cold as all hell in the
- 12:59Speaker 2: winter time, but it's it's it's it's so nice. There's
- 13:01Speaker 2: so much history to it. And yeah, I always tell people.
- 13:05Speaker 2: People are like, what do you go to Montreal? Correct,
- 13:07Speaker 2: I'm like, you know, maybe go to Montreal for the weekend.
- 13:09Speaker 2: It's fun, you know, there's a lot of vibrant city.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But I'm like, go to Quebec, especially during the summer
- 13:15Speaker 2: when they have they have a concert series that goes
- 13:17Speaker 2: on for like a month and a half and it's
- 13:18Speaker 2: like it's it's it's good, And I can't believe he
- 13:24Speaker 2: was considering a poutine. Your friend at McDonald's is like,
- 13:27Speaker 2: just just drive off a cliff, like, come on.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Tals of Montreal got the debate of Montreal Quebec City,
- 13:34Speaker 1: Where do you land?
- 13:36Speaker 3: I think I think the best thing is to try
- 13:38Speaker 3: and do both. They're like different, you know, they're a
- 13:41Speaker 3: different vibe of both. Obviously, like Quebec City definitely feels
- 13:45Speaker 3: more like a foreign country for no other reason that
- 13:47Speaker 3: fewer people speak English there. But I said, Quebec City's
- 13:51Speaker 3: more walkable too. Montreal is a little bit more spread
- 13:53Speaker 3: out Quebec City. You're pretty much all hanging out in
- 13:56Speaker 3: the same stretch, you know. I think you got to
- 14:00Speaker 3: do both if you can. I mean, if you're driving,
- 14:03Speaker 3: it's a bit of a schlep.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But oh it's just three hours on the Yeah.
- 14:08Speaker 3: If you're looking for a lot to do, like especially
- 14:11Speaker 3: during the summer, Montreal's got a million things going on,
- 14:14Speaker 3: and if you wanted to do like fast food poutine,
- 14:17Speaker 3: just go to a LaBelle Province or something like that.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Skip the McDonald's yea.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Be right Montreal just for laugh, Jazz Festival, always a
- 14:26Speaker 1: lot of stuff happening. Definitely in the summer. But to
- 14:28Speaker 1: Jade's point, Quebec it's it's cold as hell. But they
- 14:30Speaker 1: do winter right because they have to embrace it. It's
- 14:32Speaker 1: six months of it. So like, all right, lebo m,
- 14:35Speaker 1: let's let's get after it.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Lebo m. The Peewee tournament in Quebec in the winter,
- 14:39Speaker 2: they do the whole ice Castle and everything. Yeah, ice
- 14:41Speaker 2: Castle on Quebec. I get to Quebec. We're all your
- 14:43Speaker 2: dreams come true.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But you're right. I can imagine. I can imagine that.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I mean, I hear people stories of friends flying within
- 14:49Speaker 1: Canada and the prices are absurd. I can't imagine they
- 14:53Speaker 1: got you right now. That are Canada Air Canada strike
- 14:55Speaker 1: right now by the way.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Anyways, okay, oh, I can say, because my mom's out
- 14:58Speaker 2: there anywhere. What a dump of a company. It is crazy.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's I mean, they're touching customers. It's just unfair.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Oh, it's just that Air Canada rouge. Yeah, cheaper, Stacy.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Those seats are from nineteen fifty five. The plane is
- 15:15Speaker 2: from nineteen fifty five. I can't believe it gets up
- 15:17Speaker 2: and down. You're just like, oh my god, here we go.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Life in my hands for six thousand Canadian to fly
- 15:23Speaker 2: an hour.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Next time, just hop on the v rail one more
- 15:28Speaker 1: top before we'll get to our guest. The Red Wings
- 15:30Speaker 1: make a little It's not a lot of news that
- 15:31Speaker 1: get here, but they did as sign defense fan Travis
- 15:33Speaker 1: Haminick to a one year, one million dollar deal. So
- 15:35Speaker 1: Hamnick's a depth defenseman Ottawa the past three plus seasons.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Before that, he was playing with the Abbots for the HL. Again,
- 15:42Speaker 1: Detroit's a team and he've been waiting for a while
- 15:44Speaker 1: now since Seve Weisman's taking over from them to do anything.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I'm not gonna make this sound like they're signing Nick Litstrom,
- 15:49Speaker 1: but thoughts on Haminick adding to the mix.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yeah, old veterano, you know, old veterano defenseman. He's, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 2: guy that's been around the league and understands. I think
- 15:59Speaker 2: he's gonna, you know, he'll play a he'll play a role,
- 16:04Speaker 2: and I think, you know, he'll be that bottom bottom pairing.
- 16:07Speaker 2: You know. Listen, this is a big prove of year
- 16:10Speaker 2: for Detroit, not only for the team, but for Steve Eiserman.
- 16:14Speaker 2: You know, I didn't haven't loved what they did in
- 16:16Speaker 2: the off season. You know, they brought in James en Riemsdyke,
- 16:19Speaker 2: they brought back you know, Patrick Kane, but other than that,
- 16:22Speaker 2: you know, they brought in a goaltender. So you know,
- 16:25Speaker 2: they brought in John Gibson and you're hoping that shores
- 16:29Speaker 2: up things. But I just don't feel like they did
- 16:33Speaker 2: much and they impacted anything, and especially in that Atlantic division,
- 16:36Speaker 2: like the Gold Standards Florida and if you're not thinking
- 16:39Speaker 2: you're getting close to Florida, well you got to get
- 16:41Speaker 2: through them to make the finals. And it's not like
- 16:43Speaker 2: you're going to just quietly stumble your ass into the finals,
- 16:47Speaker 2: like you gotta beat these guys because they're not going anywhere.
- 16:49Speaker 2: And there's a lot of teams that got a lot
- 16:52Speaker 2: better in the Atlantic, and Detroit was in one of them.
- 16:55Speaker 2: So I think we're all, I think everybody's kind of
- 16:59Speaker 2: hard on Steve Eiserman now and we're all like, hey,
- 17:03Speaker 2: what's the plan, what's the iSER plan. We're looking, we're waiting,
- 17:05Speaker 2: we're trying to see what's what's happening. Who you bringing in?
- 17:08Speaker 2: And I think they just ran out of guys, and
- 17:11Speaker 2: you know, Hamminick was available, a good veteran defenseman to
- 17:13Speaker 2: come in on a on a small deal hopefully can
- 17:17Speaker 2: help that that Decoor. And you know they got a
- 17:19Speaker 2: good four Sherriot along with Maurite Cider and then you
- 17:23Speaker 2: got Edmonson and this Johansson. But you know, this is
- 17:26Speaker 2: a big year for this Decorp, big year for this
- 17:28Speaker 2: team and and you know, hopefully John Gibson really does
- 17:31Speaker 2: help them and can get them into a good spot
- 17:33Speaker 2: where Eiserman can kind of take a swing at the deadline.
- 17:36Speaker 2: But this is not a team for me. That's that's
- 17:39Speaker 2: Stanley Cup contending, and I would say borderline. This is
- 17:42Speaker 2: a borderline playoff team.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, which I feel like it's been for the last
- 17:46Speaker 1: couple of years. It just feels like, you know, there's
- 17:48Speaker 1: a time Hockey Down was was that for a reason.
- 17:50Speaker 1: It was the enviable place to go. People know the
- 17:52Speaker 1: passion they have for the sport there, right, They couldn't
- 17:55Speaker 1: even get a meeting with Nikolai Eilers think about that.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's uh, it's something that's a little bit,
- 18:06Speaker 2: you know, it was kind of what it's It's weird
- 18:08Speaker 2: because when I was in the league, the Sharks and
- 18:10Speaker 2: the Red Wings, we were in the playoffs every year,
- 18:12Speaker 2: you know. For I think they had that amazing stretch
- 18:14Speaker 2: of like twenty one twenty two straight seasons, maybe more.
- 18:17Speaker 2: And it's like now you're just kind of like, Okay,
- 18:20Speaker 2: when is this turnaround going to happen? And when are
- 18:23Speaker 2: these these guys that they brought in, these young prospects,
- 18:27Speaker 2: when are they going to kind of develop and flourish?
- 18:29Speaker 2: And you know, I'm I'm a little worried. If they
- 18:33Speaker 2: don't make the playoffs this year, there's gonna be some
- 18:35Speaker 2: serious changes there. I think this has to be Eiserman's
- 18:38Speaker 2: last chance, so I expect to swing by him at
- 18:41Speaker 2: the deadline and if they're in a good spot, and
- 18:44Speaker 2: but who knows, Man, it's just it's just doesn't look good.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Hockey Town, great pizza, best pizza in America.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Little Caesars, No, you Caesars Kicks. But yeah, I feel
- 18:58Speaker 4: like you're a chain guy. I think, no, God, you
- 19:00Speaker 4: can I never go change.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I kidding, no, never. The only chain that support is
- 19:03Speaker 1: the Keg. But if I'm back home, only because I'm
- 19:05Speaker 1: not in Canada, so I'll go to the cake. But
- 19:06Speaker 1: that's it in America, Chin decent?
- 19:10Speaker 2: How could Bee fit the cake?
- 19:11Speaker 1: See little baseball stake.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I'm all in a little baseball stake.
- 19:14Speaker 1: These how to be. We'll talk baseball. But later on
- 19:16Speaker 1: the Blue Jays, by the way, having it just a
- 19:18Speaker 1: fantastic season, first place right now in the Al East.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Also a little smelling salts get into that conversation in
- 19:23Speaker 1: the NFL. But it is time for our special guest
- 19:25Speaker 1: coming up after this quick break. Danton Cole was drafted
- 19:28Speaker 1: in the sixth round, one hundred and twenty third overall
- 19:30Speaker 1: by the Jets back in nineteen eighty five. Had an
- 19:33Speaker 1: interesting career playing for the Jets, the Lightning, the Devils,
- 19:36Speaker 1: the Islanders, the Blackhawks, at won the Stanley Cup in
- 19:38Speaker 1: New Jersey, and an impressive coaching career. Danton Cole coming
- 19:41Speaker 1: up right for this you're an NHL unscripted. Our next
- 19:56Speaker 1: guest was drafted in the sixth round, one hundred and
- 19:58Speaker 1: twenty third overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the nineteen
- 20:00Speaker 1: eighty five NHL's draft. He went on to score fifty
- 20:02Speaker 1: eight goals and one hundred and eighteen points at three
- 20:04Speaker 1: hundred and eighteen games. The Jets, Lightning, Devils, Islanders and
- 20:08Speaker 1: Blackhawks want a Stanley Cup in New Jersey and well
- 20:10Speaker 1: into an impressive coaching career in the IHL, HL and
- 20:13Speaker 1: us HL as well as college hockey. Quite an accomplished career.
- 20:17Speaker 1: It is dancing Cole Welcome to NHL and script. Good
- 20:19Speaker 1: to see a dancing Hey.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Nice seeing you guys, Thanks for having me on.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Of course, you started out at Michigan State under legendary
- 20:25Speaker 1: coach Ron Mason, who retired as the winning his coach
- 20:28Speaker 1: in US college hope hockey history. What kind of a
- 20:31Speaker 1: coach was he?
- 20:33Speaker 5: Uh? You know, Coach Mason was just great to play for.
- 20:37Speaker 6: And I think you know, one of the things when
- 20:39Speaker 6: a lot of us look back on you are playing
- 20:42Speaker 6: time there, what he did a really good job was
- 20:45Speaker 6: one he kind of brought you along and gave you
- 20:48Speaker 6: kind of what you could handle.
- 20:49Speaker 5: And as you know, a real good trait in the coach.
- 20:51Speaker 6: And you know, you're think in your freshman year and
- 20:53Speaker 6: everybody came and everybody was on the power play before,
- 20:56Speaker 6: so you know, you thought you'd come in and do that,
- 20:57Speaker 6: but you had to kind of earn your time and
- 20:59Speaker 6: maybe kill penalties, and you know, you take faceoffs and
- 21:02Speaker 6: then you work your way.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Into those roles.
- 21:04Speaker 6: And I know that patience has maybe lost a little
- 21:07Speaker 6: bit in today's game, but he was real good with
- 21:10Speaker 6: that and identifying again giving you some things that you
- 21:12Speaker 6: could see succeed at and build on that. And then
- 21:15Speaker 6: I think just from a mental aspect in terms of
- 21:18Speaker 6: preparing you to play pro hockey, we just the guys
- 21:21Speaker 6: that I went to camp with Brian mccrenolds in Winnipeg
- 21:23Speaker 6: the first time, we just felt that when we're in
- 21:26Speaker 6: Winnipeg's camp that especially in the rookie camps back then,
- 21:29Speaker 6: we were just very prepared.
- 21:30Speaker 5: You know.
- 21:30Speaker 6: We knew how to get through a practice, We knew
- 21:32Speaker 6: how to take care of ourselves away from the rink,
- 21:34Speaker 6: We knew how to you know, amp it up for
- 21:36Speaker 6: a game and you know, how to finish off a
- 21:38Speaker 6: win or you know, to claw back from a loss.
- 21:40Speaker 6: So I think he just from a mental aspect, did
- 21:43Speaker 6: a great job. And then lastly, like just just his
- 21:45Speaker 6: knowledge of hockey. And we've looked, you know, I went
- 21:47Speaker 6: back at when Chris Alango and I coached together several
- 21:51Speaker 6: times in different places, and we were together in Michigan State.
- 21:54Speaker 5: We looked at some old films from like our Jeesus
- 21:56Speaker 5: sophomore in junior year, and.
- 21:58Speaker 6: You know, some of the things we did was i'd
- 22:00Speaker 6: say pretty much ahead of its time just in how
- 22:02Speaker 6: we organized going through the neutral zone. We for checked
- 22:05Speaker 6: how that kind of transitioned back and some of our
- 22:07Speaker 6: penalty killing, and it just it was kind of fun
- 22:10Speaker 6: to watch and see it and say, hey this, you
- 22:11Speaker 6: know coach was you know, it's like your parents, there
- 22:14Speaker 6: are always a lot smarter after you leave and you
- 22:16Speaker 6: figure it out. But but I love playing for him,
- 22:19Speaker 6: and he made me a lot better hockey player and
- 22:21Speaker 6: it made me a great uh or Greg made me
- 22:24Speaker 6: a lot better coach as well.
- 22:27Speaker 2: What was kind of one of the unique things that
- 22:29Speaker 2: he did that that set him apart as a coach.
- 22:32Speaker 6: You know, I think with with him and again it
- 22:35Speaker 6: was different. You know, we're back in the eighties, so
- 22:36Speaker 6: it was a different era. I think, especially coming from
- 22:39Speaker 6: juniors where you know, you knew your coach real well.
- 22:42Speaker 6: I think he really separated his duties. I mean he
- 22:44Speaker 6: ran practices, he ran the games, and then uh coach
- 22:49Speaker 6: Gwasdeki and Coach Christensen were the assistants that we had
- 22:52Speaker 6: when I was there, you know, they did a lot
- 22:53Speaker 6: of the day to day things, and so he really,
- 22:56Speaker 6: I think again a lot of things he was ahead
- 22:57Speaker 6: of his time. And now it's the way things are
- 22:59Speaker 6: run is like that. If you look in the NFL,
- 23:01Speaker 6: I mean, the head coach in the NFL are like
- 23:04Speaker 6: see Eos And I think I think back then he
- 23:07Speaker 6: kind of ran it that way. And it wasn't hey
- 23:09Speaker 6: if you needed stuff, And again he had a boy,
- 23:12Speaker 6: had a great psychological point of view on things, and
- 23:16Speaker 6: when you needed it wasn't an he never deal with
- 23:18Speaker 6: you individually, but it was always kind of like when
- 23:21Speaker 6: you needed it, and he just he had a real
- 23:22Speaker 6: good feel when to jump in on that and then
- 23:24Speaker 6: also when to delegate. So again I think he was
- 23:27Speaker 6: just he was ahead of his time in a lot
- 23:28Speaker 6: of ways.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Well, it's been great because you've been in part of
- 23:33Speaker 1: hockey and so much hockey history and notable personalities. You
- 23:35Speaker 1: were on the Tampa Bay Lightning when the team entered
- 23:37Speaker 1: the league. What was that first you like with expansion franchises,
- 23:40Speaker 1: maybe a Phil Esposito story for us.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Well, there's a lot of stories, but yeah, it was
- 23:47Speaker 6: it was fun. You know, I was in Winnipeg and
- 23:50Speaker 6: Mike Hartman was there with me and we got kind
- 23:52Speaker 6: of bundled together and the expansion draft, and you know,
- 23:56Speaker 6: we're kind.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Of excited about that.
- 23:57Speaker 6: You know, you know, new start with a new team,
- 24:00Speaker 6: and you know, playing in Florida, you know, Winnipeg, that's
- 24:04Speaker 6: a little bit different weather. So it was a little
- 24:06Speaker 6: bit nice, a little change there for us. But you know,
- 24:08Speaker 6: it was exciting down there.
- 24:09Speaker 5: The people. You know, Phil did a great job in
- 24:12Speaker 5: terms of getting everybody in the.
- 24:14Speaker 6: Community excited about it and the crowds coming out and
- 24:17Speaker 6: you know, and it was again you look back, it
- 24:19Speaker 6: was a lot different then than it is now with
- 24:22Speaker 6: an expanse or franchise and you didn't have you know,
- 24:24Speaker 6: the social media and all that you had to you know,
- 24:27Speaker 6: Phil had he had to hype it and do a
- 24:29Speaker 6: lot of work in that sense.
- 24:30Speaker 5: So but it was fun, like you know, the whole
- 24:32Speaker 5: communities behind it.
- 24:33Speaker 6: We had pretty good first year and I think, uh,
- 24:36Speaker 6: you know, at the time, it was you know, probably
- 24:38Speaker 6: one of the most successful first year teams. Think Florida
- 24:41Speaker 6: came in a little later and had a better first
- 24:43Speaker 6: year than we did.
- 24:43Speaker 5: But but it was good. Got us in the community.
- 24:45Speaker 6: We played in a you know, small rink there and
- 24:49Speaker 6: out at the fairgrounds. It was like ten thousand people
- 24:52Speaker 6: temporary and then then moved over after that first year,
- 24:54Speaker 6: but it just had a real good community feel. We
- 24:57Speaker 6: had a uh Phil put together a lightning club, and
- 25:01Speaker 6: there was a big ten outside the building, which made
- 25:03Speaker 6: sense because around the fairgrounds there, and and we had
- 25:06Speaker 6: elephants walking around and everything.
- 25:07Speaker 5: But the fans could kind of go there after the.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Game, and then the players were encouraged to go there,
- 25:12Speaker 6: so you know, he really tied the community in with
- 25:14Speaker 6: the team and and and build it from there. But
- 25:16Speaker 6: it was it was a lot of fun with a
- 25:19Speaker 6: really good locker room. I'd say, you know guys like
- 25:21Speaker 6: you know, Brian Bradley's you know, been involved with the
- 25:23Speaker 6: team ever since, and you know Rob Rammage and Basil
- 25:26Speaker 6: McCrae and you know, just guys like that that that
- 25:29Speaker 6: had been around and understood the game and understood how
- 25:32Speaker 6: to you know, do things, but just appreciative of what
- 25:35Speaker 6: we had. So it was, like I said, it was
- 25:36Speaker 6: a lot of fun and we enjoyed our three years
- 25:39Speaker 6: down there.
- 25:41Speaker 2: You know, you mentioned the Jets and that's where you
- 25:43Speaker 2: kind of began your career and uh, you know, I
- 25:45Speaker 2: just want to know, you know, how that was starting
- 25:48Speaker 2: in Winnipeg. And you know, do you have any welcome
- 25:51Speaker 2: to the NHL moments that may or may not include
- 25:54Speaker 2: Big Walt Keith Kitchuk.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, well came in, uh yeah, a little
- 26:00Speaker 6: just you know, we practiced with us after the Olympics
- 26:02Speaker 6: when I was there and then was gone.
- 26:04Speaker 5: They came in. But I really liked Winnipeg. It was
- 26:08Speaker 5: you know, they as an organization, they did a good job.
- 26:10Speaker 6: You know, I played most of my first year in
- 26:12Speaker 6: the AHL and had you know, Dave Ferris was a
- 26:14Speaker 6: coach down there, got a lot of playing time and
- 26:16Speaker 6: then kind of made the team. Was there for for
- 26:18Speaker 6: most of the next two years. And I'd say, just
- 26:21Speaker 6: great playing in a hockey town.
- 26:22Speaker 5: You know, we had you know, he had.
- 26:23Speaker 6: Two two newspapers and boy there's two or three pages
- 26:27Speaker 6: every day that were just about hockey. So it was
- 26:29Speaker 6: it was neat and he playing it came down now
- 26:32Speaker 6: puts you you know, in the spotlight a little bit,
- 26:33Speaker 6: but it just it felt good and uh to have
- 26:36Speaker 6: that that kind of talk. And I remember, I don't
- 26:39Speaker 6: know if it was our first home game, but it
- 26:41Speaker 6: was one of the first home games we had Winnipeg
- 26:43Speaker 6: my my first full year, and we were playing Toronto
- 26:45Speaker 6: and Wendell Clark was there, and I got I was
- 26:49Speaker 6: like a checking forward back then when you used to
- 26:51Speaker 6: do that, need shadow guys and do things like that.
- 26:54Speaker 5: So I was on the ice against a decent amount.
- 26:56Speaker 6: We ended up in front of the net and uh,
- 26:58Speaker 6: you know, jostling around a little bit, and you know,
- 27:00Speaker 6: he shoved me, probably first because I'm smart enough not
- 27:03Speaker 6: to hit and shove him for and then so I
- 27:04Speaker 6: show him back and then just drilled me right right
- 27:07Speaker 6: in the face with his glove and just smote me
- 27:10Speaker 6: right And so I kind of turned around rough. I'm like,
- 27:13Speaker 6: what the hell's going on here this guy? And he's like, hey,
- 27:16Speaker 6: he goes there, he goes, he goes less, less talking, more.
- 27:19Speaker 5: And more fighting. Just skate it away. So all right,
- 27:22Speaker 5: I got.
- 27:23Speaker 6: I guess it's uh there, there's a pecking order and
- 27:25Speaker 6: I'm near the bottom of it.
- 27:26Speaker 5: So anyhow, keep keep my head up.
- 27:30Speaker 1: That was hockey of that era. It's true, less talk
- 27:32Speaker 1: and more fighting. Yeah, you go from the outhouse of
- 27:34Speaker 1: the penthouse strikes short in ninety four to ninety five season,
- 27:37Speaker 1: you get traded from Tampa to Jersey and winning that
- 27:39Speaker 1: Stanley Cup. What was that whole experience.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Like it was I tell you what in terms of
- 27:45Speaker 6: I was, and I'm glad I was. I was a
- 27:47Speaker 6: little bit older, you know, I was twenty eight maybe
- 27:50Speaker 6: twenty nine when I won it.
- 27:52Speaker 5: Just so you can kind of sit back and enjoy it.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Sometimes when things happen to you when you're young.
- 27:57Speaker 6: You just go through them and then you you hear
- 27:59Speaker 6: a lot of guys talk about that. We want you know,
- 28:00Speaker 6: we got to the conference or the Stanley Cup finals
- 28:03Speaker 6: my first year in the league, and I was nineteen
- 28:04Speaker 6: or twenty and then just thought that would happen every year.
- 28:07Speaker 5: So for me, it was.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Nice to be able to sit back and I would
- 28:10Speaker 6: you know, I kid when we have reunions and Sean
- 28:13Speaker 6: Chambers and I got traded over there, I said, that's
- 28:15Speaker 6: that was it.
- 28:16Speaker 5: You know, I was the key part that put us
- 28:17Speaker 5: over the top there. But I was.
- 28:19Speaker 6: I was a bit player and I filled in when
- 28:21Speaker 6: guys were hurt. And but from an experience wise and
- 28:26Speaker 6: later in life, between coaching and managing, there was there
- 28:29Speaker 6: was a few people there that just made it really,
- 28:31Speaker 6: I mean outside of the team, which was fantastic, but
- 28:34Speaker 6: playing for Jacques Lamira was in and Larry Robinson was
- 28:38Speaker 6: unbelievable and is you know, and I was lucky. So
- 28:40Speaker 6: I think I think Ron Mason was the best college coach,
- 28:44Speaker 6: and I know there'll be some arguments, but Jacques was
- 28:46Speaker 6: an unbelievable tactician and the way he did things and
- 28:50Speaker 6: ran a team, and Larry was Larry was amazing as well.
- 28:53Speaker 6: So to be around those guys and kind of soaking
- 28:55Speaker 6: the knowledge and kind of see how how a team run.
- 28:58Speaker 6: Those guys so much excited would Jacqua have twelve thirteen
- 29:00Speaker 6: Stanley Cup rings and Larry's either. And then on the
- 29:05Speaker 6: other side of it, you know, with loul Lamarillo being
- 29:07Speaker 6: being the general manager and how how he ran things
- 29:10Speaker 6: and just you know, you know, people answering the phones
- 29:12Speaker 6: and you're there on time, and and you just do
- 29:15Speaker 6: things professionally.
- 29:16Speaker 5: You don't, you know, cut corners to do it.
- 29:18Speaker 6: So I was able to kind of sit back and
- 29:20Speaker 6: kind of watch all of that happen and go through
- 29:23Speaker 6: it and go through a playoff series. And I tell you,
- 29:26Speaker 6: as a coach, I stole so much stuff from Jock
- 29:28Speaker 6: and Larry and how they did things that I mean,
- 29:32Speaker 6: we ran, you know, a lot of the same systems
- 29:34Speaker 6: for a lot of times, and how we approach things
- 29:36Speaker 6: and just you know, little sayings that Larry had about
- 29:38Speaker 6: you know, how to go in the corner, how defense play.
- 29:40Speaker 6: I had I think, pretty good success coach and defenseman
- 29:44Speaker 6: and had a lot of have a lot of guys
- 29:46Speaker 6: in the NHL playing, but ninety percent of what they
- 29:49Speaker 6: did was stuff that Larry talked about. And again I
- 29:51Speaker 6: was glad I was a little bit older that, you know,
- 29:53Speaker 6: I could remember some of that and I wasn't just
- 29:55Speaker 6: you know, drinking water from a fire hose that I
- 29:57Speaker 6: was you know, could do it.
- 29:58Speaker 5: But what what an experience?
- 29:59Speaker 6: And you know, you win a Stanley Cupp or you're
- 30:02Speaker 6: on a team that wins it, then you know, it's
- 30:03Speaker 6: funny your life people that's they all, well, you know,
- 30:07Speaker 6: Stanley Cup winner, and they describe you're introduce you that
- 30:09Speaker 6: way and I always try and you know, segue away
- 30:11Speaker 6: from that. That's not not really what what you want
- 30:14Speaker 6: I am as a man or what I want to
- 30:15Speaker 6: be regarded as. But it's it's a good way to
- 30:17Speaker 6: get your foot in the door, and it's a like
- 30:18Speaker 6: I said, I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you know the Stanley Cup. It's when you
- 30:24Speaker 2: finish your career. The one question is did you win
- 30:27Speaker 2: or did you not win? So it's always a tough
- 30:30Speaker 2: question to answer because you get judged based on that.
- 30:33Speaker 2: But I you know, speaking to somebody that won so
- 30:35Speaker 2: much later Robinson, I had him as a coach as well.
- 30:38Speaker 2: I had Big Bird as a coach in in San
- 30:40Speaker 2: Jose and I loved him. I think his knowledge of
- 30:44Speaker 2: the game, like you said, it's his little the little
- 30:46Speaker 2: tips and tricks he has of like little things that
- 30:49Speaker 2: you would never expect, like picking the puck off the
- 30:51Speaker 2: wall when it's stuck. Things like that that that he
- 30:54Speaker 2: knew that I've never seen another coach teach. Uh is
- 30:59Speaker 2: just absolutely incredible. And then also his his looseness around
- 31:04Speaker 2: the rink and how he just has fun. I mean,
- 31:07Speaker 2: talk a little bit about him as as as a
- 31:10Speaker 2: guy coming in and you know you said you were
- 31:12Speaker 2: a little bit older twenty seven, twenty eight, but like
- 31:14Speaker 2: for young guys and also old guys, he's just like
- 31:16Speaker 2: kind of the perfect mix for a Jacques Lamaire.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Yeah, no, that's yeah, that's what I was going to say.
- 31:20Speaker 6: That that's perfectly he and Jack just because you know,
- 31:23Speaker 6: Jacques didn't say a lot. He was he was pleasant
- 31:25Speaker 6: to be around on it, but he was kind of
- 31:27Speaker 6: quiet and kind of like real urse and direct to
- 31:29Speaker 6: the point. But then Larry, like you said, was relaxed
- 31:31Speaker 6: and you know, he'd play he'd played three on three
- 31:34Speaker 6: after practice with the guys that weren't playing and still
- 31:37Speaker 6: be probably the best best player there.
- 31:40Speaker 2: He still crazy.
- 31:42Speaker 6: Yeah, so it was uh, and I played against Larry,
- 31:45Speaker 6: so it was kind of you know, we had.
- 31:46Speaker 5: A few a few run ins when we'd mail back
- 31:49Speaker 5: in the day when.
- 31:49Speaker 6: He's playing in LA and stuff, and uh, but no,
- 31:52Speaker 6: he again, you're right, just just tactically, he was really
- 31:55Speaker 6: good and just to make the game you know, easy,
- 31:57Speaker 6: and you know, we we we'd talk about it later
- 31:59Speaker 6: on when we're teaching the defenseman. Just just your automatics,
- 32:03Speaker 6: you know, just you know, how going like you're saying,
- 32:05Speaker 6: how you're going back for a puck, how you're pulling
- 32:06Speaker 6: it off the wall, how you're setting yourself up. You know,
- 32:09Speaker 6: he'd you know talk about you know, not you don't
- 32:12Speaker 6: have to be the first guy back in the corner
- 32:13Speaker 6: and you know, get your face smashed. You know, there's
- 32:15Speaker 6: a smart way to play it in then dumb way.
- 32:17Speaker 6: And but you know, not being the odd man in
- 32:19Speaker 6: a pile. I mean, just stick on puck stuff.
- 32:21Speaker 5: I mean, I can go on and on.
- 32:22Speaker 6: But it's one thing to have the knowledge, and it's
- 32:26Speaker 6: another thing to be able to you know, be able
- 32:28Speaker 6: to pass that on and teach it in a way
- 32:30Speaker 6: that's presentable the guys. And like I said, I loved it.
- 32:33Speaker 6: I just I thought it was fascinating to hear. And
- 32:35Speaker 6: again it's a guy that you know, was you know whatever,
- 32:38Speaker 6: I don't know. You can throw him top five top
- 32:39Speaker 6: defenseman of all time.
- 32:41Speaker 5: You know, and did it and want it.
- 32:43Speaker 6: And then you know, also be able to be on
- 32:45Speaker 6: the ice with him and go through some of that stuff.
- 32:47Speaker 6: So he was and he was good. Like I said,
- 32:49Speaker 6: I didn't. You know, there was a lot of games
- 32:50Speaker 6: if we didn't have injuries. I wasn't I wasn't playing,
- 32:53Speaker 6: So you know, I spent probably more than my fair
- 32:56Speaker 6: share time with him after practice. And you know, I
- 32:58Speaker 6: think one drill that we used to do, and man,
- 33:01Speaker 6: I scored and went and the year after I ended
- 33:04Speaker 6: up in the eye, and I think I scored twenty
- 33:06Speaker 6: eight goals and thirty two games of UTAH or something.
- 33:08Speaker 6: But I'd say ninety percent of that was because Larry.
- 33:11Speaker 6: We'd stay on after and you had to hit ten
- 33:13Speaker 6: one timers, you know, on net before you could get
- 33:16Speaker 6: off the ice, and sometimes that took a took me
- 33:18Speaker 6: a little longer maybe some of the guys, but man,
- 33:20Speaker 6: my one timer I came back. I remember skating in
- 33:22Speaker 6: the summer and I was.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Like, I'm shooting.
- 33:24Speaker 6: I'm taught an old dog some new tricks. Man, my
- 33:26Speaker 6: shot was way better, and they carried over after that.
- 33:30Speaker 6: But I used those drills. I used three or four
- 33:32Speaker 6: one time or drills that Larry had and how he taught,
- 33:34Speaker 6: Like I said, I carried that all the way through.
- 33:36Speaker 6: And when we had times with guys with USA Hockey
- 33:38Speaker 6: and the young kids that don't know how to shoot
- 33:40Speaker 6: a one time, you just just go back to the
- 33:42Speaker 6: basics with what Larry taught.
- 33:43Speaker 5: And there's just a ton of things like that.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Well as smart as you're saying, Dan, just to kind
- 33:49Speaker 1: of borrow from legends wherever you can. I'm curious with
- 33:52Speaker 1: your time the New Ork Calender, speaking of a by
- 33:54Speaker 1: gone era, Mike Melbray was the coach but also the
- 33:56Speaker 1: general manager. How chaotic was that, Like, all of a sudden,
- 33:59Speaker 1: you've a bad shift, he could trade you the next day.
- 34:02Speaker 2: It was.
- 34:03Speaker 5: It was interesting, you know.
- 34:05Speaker 6: I I signed there, and I knew I was kind of,
- 34:08Speaker 6: you know, getting getting towards maybe maybe the end of it.
- 34:11Speaker 6: And I thought, you know, get to a team where
- 34:13Speaker 6: I have an opportunity to be more and more of
- 34:14Speaker 6: a full time player and finish up that way. And
- 34:17Speaker 6: I ended up signing with the Islanders, and I kind
- 34:20Speaker 6: of I think coming out of camp I was there,
- 34:22Speaker 6: I was looking for a place and then Jason, you
- 34:24Speaker 6: can I don't know if you ever had this experience
- 34:26Speaker 6: where you're looking for a place and headn't sign a
- 34:28Speaker 6: contract and then they make a trade and all of
- 34:29Speaker 6: a sudden, Uh, I'm in Utah playing for Butcher Goring,
- 34:32Speaker 6: which actually kind of a blessing in disguise because I
- 34:35Speaker 6: love playing for Butch and again another famous player, but he.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Had a lot of interesting things and fun to play for.
- 34:43Speaker 6: And man, it was I tell you, guys, back in
- 34:45Speaker 6: college because I was killing penalties and power play, and
- 34:47Speaker 6: I mean it was it was. It was just a
- 34:49Speaker 6: lot of fun and that was good. But yeah, the
- 34:52Speaker 6: brief time I was in the island and Mike was
- 34:54Speaker 6: it was interesting. And you're right, coach GM, you're not
- 34:58Speaker 6: sure when when you go into the office afterwards, if
- 35:00Speaker 6: you're you know, if you're getting traded or you're gonna.
- 35:02Speaker 5: Go over a video or or what was going to
- 35:05Speaker 5: go on. And it was it was some interesting times.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Uh yeah, he's he didn't go up into the stands
- 35:12Speaker 6: and hit anyone with a skater or shoe when I
- 35:13Speaker 6: was there.
- 35:14Speaker 5: I think that was when he did that. But uh, yeah,
- 35:17Speaker 5: it was it was interesting.
- 35:19Speaker 6: He uh, you know, there there were some struggles there,
- 35:23Speaker 6: and I don't think the team was Great's funny because
- 35:25Speaker 6: the team in Utah, I think won like back to
- 35:27Speaker 6: back championships and all that, so it's a little more fun.
- 35:30Speaker 6: But you know, hey, you try and take something away
- 35:33Speaker 6: from everywhere you're at, and you know what, I thought
- 35:36Speaker 6: he had some interesting ideas on some things. There's there's
- 35:39Speaker 6: a I remember one time in the penalty kill and
- 35:42Speaker 6: we were five I was killing it was five on
- 35:44Speaker 6: four and my stick broke and I was out there
- 35:46Speaker 6: and and the bench was at the far end, and
- 35:49Speaker 6: I'm not going to change and killing a penalty leave
- 35:51Speaker 6: it a five on three to go to the bench,
- 35:53Speaker 6: let someone else get and I get to mention. He
- 35:55Speaker 6: was just barking, you lose your stick, you got to
- 35:57Speaker 6: come off the ice and get a stick and then
- 35:59Speaker 6: go back. And I was like, I don't know if
- 36:01Speaker 6: I I still don't think i'd buy that theory, but hey,
- 36:04Speaker 6: diff different way of thinking, and now you see it.
- 36:06Speaker 6: Sometimes I guess if it was a short side of
- 36:08Speaker 6: the bench, maybe you switch sides with the player and
- 36:10Speaker 6: then get a six. So you know, maybe, uh, maybe
- 36:13Speaker 6: there's a theory there. Some I'm not sure I agreed
- 36:14Speaker 6: with it at the time, but he was a coach
- 36:17Speaker 6: in the GM, so I guess you do what they're
- 36:19Speaker 6: going to tell you.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Do you still yeah, Like I I think that's a
- 36:23Speaker 2: hot topic debate with a lot of guys in the
- 36:26Speaker 2: dressing room even today, Like when you break your stick
- 36:30Speaker 2: on the penalty killer in the d zone, when is
- 36:33Speaker 2: the good time to change? Like, because I agree with you,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I think on a five on four you can still
- 36:39Speaker 2: block a shot. You can still you know, you're necessarily
- 36:42Speaker 2: not not that you don't need your stick, but if
- 36:45Speaker 2: you just played the top, you just play the point guy,
- 36:48Speaker 2: and you stop shifting and you just take those one
- 36:51Speaker 2: timers and you're the you're the blocker. If you leave,
- 36:53Speaker 2: you open up a five on three really quickly. So
- 36:56Speaker 2: what's your thoughts on that, Like, when is the right
- 36:58Speaker 2: time to change?
- 37:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's you know, for me personally, like
- 37:04Speaker 6: I would have my guys come off, And I think
- 37:05Speaker 6: what you can do is at least from a theoretical
- 37:08Speaker 6: you know, if you're walking through you say you can
- 37:10Speaker 6: do it in practice, right, you lose your stick and
- 37:12Speaker 6: then at least try and get to the bench side
- 37:14Speaker 6: of the ice so that if they're hey, there's a
- 37:16Speaker 6: puck in the neutral zone, then maybe you know you
- 37:18Speaker 6: can zip and cheat a guy off the bench and
- 37:20Speaker 6: he can get back. But yeah, I don't think i'd
- 37:23Speaker 6: I'd personally get off the ice like you said, I.
- 37:25Speaker 5: Think you can.
- 37:26Speaker 6: You can stay in lanes and sometimes you can do
- 37:29Speaker 6: a better job with that. You lose that stick and
- 37:30Speaker 6: you lose the reach a little bit. But yeah, i'd
- 37:33Speaker 6: leave guys out. I wouldn't tell him to come off
- 37:35Speaker 6: in that situate. Now, if it's if it's in the
- 37:38Speaker 6: zone where your bench is right there, like I said,
- 37:40Speaker 6: and there's a contested buck right at the blue line
- 37:42Speaker 6: and you're out there, Hey, if you can jump off
- 37:43Speaker 6: or grab a stick and have a guy get on,
- 37:45Speaker 6: that's that's a one or two second thing.
- 37:47Speaker 5: But I think you're right.
- 37:47Speaker 6: If you give guys, you give him ten seconds on
- 37:50Speaker 6: a five on three and you got a guy like
- 37:52Speaker 6: a Vetchkin out there, I mean they're gonna wheel it
- 37:54Speaker 6: around and you know what's going to happen. So yeah,
- 37:57Speaker 6: I probably lean towards more BB patient, standing your lanes
- 38:00Speaker 6: and try and change when it's possible.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Yeah, And I just I was curious. You know, we've
- 38:05Speaker 3: been going through your career obviously, and towards the end
- 38:07Speaker 3: you have a brief stay in Chicago with just a
- 38:11Speaker 3: murderer's row of personalities. Chris Chellios, Jeremy Ronick, Tonia, Monte
- 38:17Speaker 3: Ed Belfo Vadislav Tretziak is the goalie coach on that team.
- 38:21Speaker 3: I would love to hear any any memories of of
- 38:24Speaker 3: that group of guys for the brief time you were
- 38:26Speaker 3: in Chicago.
- 38:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it was, it was, It was interesting. The nice
- 38:30Speaker 5: thing about that was I played.
- 38:32Speaker 6: I'd played with the US team a few times, and
- 38:35Speaker 6: so I played with Celli and uh Tony and and
- 38:40Speaker 6: uh and and Mike as well, So so I knew
- 38:43Speaker 6: some of those guys. I didn't know Eddie as well.
- 38:46Speaker 6: But it's kind of fun to come in and play
- 38:48Speaker 6: with a guy like that. I mean, it's a lot
- 38:50Speaker 6: of goalies don't have personality like he does, and he did,
- 38:53Speaker 6: and he was I was lucky to play with a
- 38:55Speaker 6: lot of great goaltenders and he's definitely one of them.
- 38:58Speaker 6: And then it was neat because you know, when I
- 39:00Speaker 6: was in Winnipeg, we had some of the early Russians
- 39:02Speaker 6: that had come over, so we had some those guys
- 39:04Speaker 6: are some of the first that came in, and New
- 39:06Speaker 6: Jersey was kind of doing that at the same time.
- 39:09Speaker 6: And then when I went to New Jersey, feed us
- 39:10Speaker 6: Off was still there and he wasn't playing a lot either,
- 39:13Speaker 6: So again, maybe one of the best players I've ever
- 39:18Speaker 6: been on the ice with, and just just some of
- 39:19Speaker 6: the things he could do in a huge human being,
- 39:21Speaker 6: like I don't know if people realize.
- 39:22Speaker 5: I mean he's six three six four two fifty maybe
- 39:26Speaker 5: and just a rock. He was an unbelievable hands.
- 39:30Speaker 6: I mean it was so he'd be out there playing
- 39:31Speaker 6: three on three and you'd have Slava and Larry and.
- 39:35Speaker 5: Then I'd jump in, I'm go hamm. With these two guys,
- 39:37Speaker 5: you'd never lose.
- 39:38Speaker 6: But so I knew some of the Russian guys and
- 39:41Speaker 6: then and then having treat Check around was kind of neat.
- 39:43Speaker 6: So obviously you know you want to you want to
- 39:46Speaker 6: chat with him. He wasn't around a ton I do.
- 39:48Speaker 6: He liked the sona after practice, and so did I,
- 39:50Speaker 6: so I'd always try and time it or I could
- 39:52Speaker 6: get in there and chat with him a little bit.
- 39:53Speaker 6: But those guys are their stories and what they went
- 39:56Speaker 6: through in the eighties and getting out of that country
- 39:59Speaker 6: and getting over here. I mean, they're they're fascinating. Those
- 40:02Speaker 6: those movies that you watch, that's that's exactly what they
- 40:05Speaker 6: talk about. And like I said, and if you watch
- 40:08Speaker 6: the old treat Check videos and some of the crazy
- 40:11Speaker 6: stuff they had training.
- 40:11Speaker 5: But yeah, it was fun being around them.
- 40:14Speaker 2: It was.
- 40:14Speaker 5: It was neat.
- 40:15Speaker 6: And I love Chicago's back then. The Old Stadium was
- 40:17Speaker 6: always my favorite place to play on the road, and
- 40:19Speaker 6: I love the National Anthem, and I love the I
- 40:22Speaker 6: even like the lousy locker room they used to stick
- 40:25Speaker 6: in in the basement. You had to walk up through
- 40:26Speaker 6: the gold judge's box to get out on the ice,
- 40:30Speaker 6: and yeah, then you hit the national anthem.
- 40:32Speaker 5: It was just fans were right on.
- 40:33Speaker 6: It was.
- 40:34Speaker 5: It was a really cool place to play.
- 40:35Speaker 6: So, you know, I got the chance to play there
- 40:37Speaker 6: and uh, you know, and be in that city for
- 40:39Speaker 6: just just a little bit.
- 40:40Speaker 5: But yeah, good, good memories there.
- 40:42Speaker 6: They in fact, they treated me really well and had
- 40:46Speaker 6: no complaints and it was kind of neat to sneak
- 40:48Speaker 6: in and, like you said, be around some of those guys.
- 40:50Speaker 3: You go from playing right into coaching with Grand Rapids,
- 40:54Speaker 3: and then you end up becoming the head coach of
- 40:57Speaker 3: the Motor City Mechanics of the United Hockey League and
- 41:00Speaker 3: you're coaching them during the four o five season when
- 41:03Speaker 3: the NHL is is locked out. There's a lost season,
- 41:06Speaker 3: so the Red Wings aren't playing. So you're coaching in
- 41:09Speaker 3: the United Hockey League in Detroit and you're the only
- 41:11Speaker 3: pro hockey available at that time in Detroit. What was
- 41:15Speaker 3: it like being the only show in hockey town?
- 41:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it was, it was. It was interesting.
- 41:21Speaker 6: So I was with Grand rapids, and I'm I'm in
- 41:24Speaker 6: the coaching business. So I got I got fired, and
- 41:26Speaker 6: I was sitting at sitting at home, and and like
- 41:29Speaker 6: I said before, I knew Chilly a little bit and
- 41:31Speaker 6: he was playing there. So, uh, Darien Hatcher, Chilly was there,
- 41:37Speaker 6: Sean Avery and Brian Smolenski were all playing for that team.
- 41:40Speaker 6: And so Chllie called me and he said, hey, he goes,
- 41:43Speaker 6: do you want to coach? And I said, yeah, I'm
- 41:45Speaker 6: I've been at home about a week. I was chomping
- 41:46Speaker 6: at the bit and so yeah, let's.
- 41:47Speaker 5: See what what do you got? So he kind of
- 41:50Speaker 5: threw that my way.
- 41:51Speaker 6: And then the owners of the team called me and
- 41:53Speaker 6: asked if I wanted to finish up the season, and
- 41:55Speaker 6: they had they had twenty games to go in the season.
- 41:57Speaker 6: So yeah, I jumped down there and finished up that
- 42:00Speaker 6: season with him.
- 42:01Speaker 5: It was fun. They they played only only home.
- 42:05Speaker 6: Games for US, so that was in tr a nice
- 42:07Speaker 6: little uh kind of like the NBA now and some
- 42:09Speaker 6: of those guys don't play all the time.
- 42:10Speaker 5: But but it was. It was good. And I tell
- 42:13Speaker 5: you they were they were.
- 42:14Speaker 6: They were great and now and I mean I always
- 42:17Speaker 6: I'm a big Chris Chelios fan I and and people
- 42:19Speaker 6: always say he was the best American player of all
- 42:21Speaker 6: the time. Well, I always kind of come back to him,
- 42:24Speaker 6: and not just from longevity, but wow, what he could,
- 42:28Speaker 6: what he could do, and as good as he was offensively,
- 42:31Speaker 6: he was that good defensively.
- 42:33Speaker 5: He was tough, he was smart. I mean, I don't know.
- 42:35Speaker 5: I'm again I'm I'm a big fan, and but in
- 42:39Speaker 5: that level. I always I used to use this.
- 42:41Speaker 6: A lot talking to younger guys, and I said, here's
- 42:43Speaker 6: a guy that's he's forty forty two years old playing
- 42:47Speaker 6: playing for me, And thank goodness I knew him because
- 42:49Speaker 6: that helped. But man, he'd come off the ice and
- 42:51Speaker 6: he'd ask about a situation, Hey when when they for checked,
- 42:54Speaker 6: like this, what do you want to do in there?
- 42:55Speaker 6: And I'm like, it's kind of impressive, right Like he
- 42:57Speaker 6: just just the receptiveness and and the professionalism and wanted
- 43:01Speaker 6: to be coached.
- 43:02Speaker 5: And and to be open to it.
- 43:04Speaker 6: And I don't know, I just I found it. It
- 43:06Speaker 6: was really interesting. And though those four guys were fund
- 43:09Speaker 6: we had a pretty good team. It was a little
- 43:11Speaker 6: it was funny. We went We went eighteen and two
- 43:13Speaker 6: to finish the season and always and people go, oh,
- 43:15Speaker 6: he had all the NHL guys that go, well, we
- 43:17Speaker 6: were eight and two at home and we were ten
- 43:18Speaker 6: and zer on the road when they didn't play for us,
- 43:20Speaker 6: So I don't know if they were they were helping
- 43:22Speaker 6: us or hurting us, but but it was fun. It
- 43:25Speaker 6: was the owners of the team were fantastic guys, and
- 43:30Speaker 6: you know, they tried to make a goal of it.
- 43:31Speaker 5: It's it's it's tough.
- 43:32Speaker 6: Down in Detroit, like you said, it's it's it's tough
- 43:35Speaker 6: enough when there's no other pro sports, but minor league
- 43:37Speaker 6: sports in Detroit just haven't really ever taken hold.
- 43:40Speaker 5: And been able to work. But I love working for him.
- 43:42Speaker 5: Learned a ton. They're really good business guys.
- 43:44Speaker 6: And you know, they lasted one more year and then
- 43:47Speaker 6: I moved on from there.
- 43:47Speaker 5: But that was a lot of good memories.
- 43:49Speaker 6: It was a fun team and the guys, it was
- 43:51Speaker 6: it was neat how everyone kind of accepted that these
- 43:53Speaker 6: guys were playing for US at times and not other times,
- 43:56Speaker 6: and guys would step up and then step back when
- 43:58Speaker 6: they had two and it was, yeah, it was fun.
- 44:00Speaker 1: It was.
- 44:00Speaker 5: It was a really good locker room, good bunch of guys, coach.
- 44:05Speaker 2: I mean another American born player that you've coached, especially
- 44:09Speaker 2: with the United States national team the development program, Jack Keel.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I mean, talk about a guy that's on his way
- 44:16Speaker 2: to being considered in in the top you know, US
- 44:20Speaker 2: born hockey players. So what was a young Jack Kele like?
- 44:23Speaker 2: And uh, you know what what have you seen in
- 44:27Speaker 2: his growth and development?
- 44:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 44:28Speaker 6: Jack, you know, Jack was a I want to say freak,
- 44:33Speaker 6: but that always sounds wrong.
- 44:33Speaker 5: He was just he was a machine. It's and he
- 44:36Speaker 5: was young, so you know he had.
- 44:37Speaker 6: That delayed draft you're there, but he uh, you know,
- 44:41Speaker 6: he could come in and I mean he was like
- 44:42Speaker 6: a you know, his vertical jump and is you know,
- 44:45Speaker 6: he could clean three hundred pounds of sixty you know
- 44:48Speaker 6: what I mean, just he did.
- 44:49Speaker 2: This just really yeah, oh he was.
- 44:51Speaker 5: He was.
- 44:52Speaker 6: Jimmy Cummins, who's still still scull with Calgary, called me
- 44:56Speaker 6: and he'd seen a video and he goes, that's not real.
- 44:58Speaker 5: He's not.
- 44:58Speaker 6: I mean he's just like cleaning you know before the draft,
- 45:01Speaker 6: like you know, three hundred pounds like ten times like.
- 45:03Speaker 5: It was not And and he yeah, he was.
- 45:06Speaker 6: He was a force and his power you can see
- 45:08Speaker 6: it on the game and he just when he's on
- 45:10Speaker 6: the ice and skating, he can really make it look
- 45:12Speaker 6: easy like he's he's like the old Russians, you know,
- 45:14Speaker 6: they're full stride and in about two strides they are
- 45:17Speaker 6: at full speed.
- 45:18Speaker 5: And uh.
- 45:19Speaker 6: But yeah, he he was interesting and I like coaching him,
- 45:23Speaker 6: and Jack and I had had a good relationship and
- 45:25Speaker 6: we put a lot on him. But you know, one
- 45:27Speaker 6: thing he really had to work on offensively and defensive
- 45:31Speaker 6: he was just playing without the puck. And that's not
- 45:33Speaker 6: not a slam on him. It's just he was so
- 45:36Speaker 6: dominant that when he had the puck offensively, he just
- 45:39Speaker 6: had it, and you know what I mean, he wasn't
- 45:41Speaker 6: kicking it and driving to the nat or playing off
- 45:43Speaker 6: the pucket on Defensively, his theory on defense was just
- 45:46Speaker 6: I just skate back and take the puck away from
- 45:48Speaker 6: the other team and just go back on offense, which
- 45:50Speaker 6: is which is is fine to a certain extent, but
- 45:53Speaker 6: when you get into a little bit more mature hockey
- 45:55Speaker 6: and all that, then you just end up.
- 45:56Speaker 5: Chasing those Yeah, and he you know what.
- 45:59Speaker 6: He took to really well his second year, Like he
- 46:02Speaker 6: and Sunny Milano and Alex Tuck were line and I
- 46:05Speaker 6: always said it was the best junior line in hockey
- 46:07Speaker 6: in the world that year. I mean, they were just
- 46:09Speaker 6: fantastic together and they kind of got that where they
- 46:11Speaker 6: would kick pucks and Barry Smith would talk a lot
- 46:14Speaker 6: about trying to get a teams, trying to get good
- 46:17Speaker 6: players to play a two man game. If you get
- 46:18Speaker 6: really good players, he can play a three man game
- 46:20Speaker 6: where you can you can set up odd man situations
- 46:23Speaker 6: all over the ice. And they were just fantastic at it, so,
- 46:26Speaker 6: you know, and he and he led in his own
- 46:27Speaker 6: way and and just just a savage in the weight room.
- 46:31Speaker 6: And like I said, he just he just kept growing.
- 46:34Speaker 5: Up getting there.
- 46:35Speaker 6: And I in my mind what I saw when they
- 46:37Speaker 6: won the Stanley Cup was was that's how he was
- 46:40Speaker 6: for us when he was eighteen. I mean, he just
- 46:41Speaker 6: he just you know, brought confidence to the whole team
- 46:44Speaker 6: the way he played, and he'd dominate with the puck
- 46:46Speaker 6: and his he he could be really physical and physically
- 46:50Speaker 6: dominant without without throwing.
- 46:52Speaker 5: A check in a game, if that makes sense. I mean,
- 46:53Speaker 5: he was just a load to.
- 46:54Speaker 6: Play and we had the U seventeen year old Challenge
- 46:58Speaker 6: and they had McDavid and on Canada's team and we
- 47:03Speaker 6: ended up winning that game six, But it was it
- 47:05Speaker 6: was about halfway through the game and all of a sudden,
- 47:07Speaker 6: it was like we could have just played one on one.
- 47:10Speaker 6: It was just those those are the only two guys
- 47:12Speaker 6: on the ice. It was what it seemed like, and
- 47:13Speaker 6: it was just, I mean, what a high level of
- 47:16Speaker 6: hockey and how fun that was. And I just in
- 47:18Speaker 6: my mind, I always looked at and I said, you
- 47:19Speaker 6: know what, that's when you know, when Jack finally gets
- 47:22Speaker 6: to that point, and it just hasn't surprised me how
- 47:25Speaker 6: he's played, and it's been, like I said, it was
- 47:26Speaker 6: great to see him win a Cup, and then last.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Year you have another great year, and yeah, it's just
- 47:31Speaker 5: it's fun to see young guys like that.
- 47:32Speaker 6: Now now he's a young man, but you know, play
- 47:34Speaker 6: that well and do what I thought he could do.
- 47:38Speaker 3: You're a Michigan guy through and through. I grew up there,
- 47:41Speaker 3: played there, coached there, you still live there.
- 47:43Speaker 2: I'd love to get your.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Take on with so many players coming from all over
- 47:47Speaker 3: the United States now, California, Florida, Arizona, wherever it is,
- 47:51Speaker 3: where do you think Michigan is right now in terms
- 47:54Speaker 3: of their place in the in the USA Hockey map.
- 47:57Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think you know I personally and
- 48:02Speaker 6: I'm not working for anyone, so I can say whatever
- 48:04Speaker 6: I want. I think personally, I think we have Yeah,
- 48:07Speaker 6: we have some work here to do in the state
- 48:09Speaker 6: of Michigan. And I think, you know, there was a
- 48:11Speaker 6: time when it was Minnesota, Michigan and Massachusetts where you know,
- 48:15Speaker 6: most of the guys are coming from.
- 48:16Speaker 5: I think that it's wonderful that it's expanded.
- 48:19Speaker 6: I mean, you look at all the guys coming from
- 48:21Speaker 6: California and Texas and Florida and Arizona, and you know,
- 48:24Speaker 6: it's amazing. And the NHL has driven a lot of that.
- 48:26Speaker 6: All those all those teams have made the games more popular.
- 48:30Speaker 6: But I think what we've done in Michigan is is
- 48:32Speaker 6: I think we've lost a little bit of focus on
- 48:35Speaker 6: on what it made us, made us good in the competition.
- 48:38Speaker 6: I think we've turned and this this is probably a
- 48:41Speaker 6: nationwide thing too, where you know, if too many triple
- 48:45Speaker 6: A teams, not enough double A teams, too many kids,
- 48:48Speaker 6: you know, running to get to the next spot instead
- 48:50Speaker 6: of being good where you're at I mean, I see
- 48:52Speaker 6: guys leaving, you know, Detroit has and I go way
- 48:55Speaker 6: back when when Ali Fredi and Pat la Fontaine and
- 48:59Speaker 6: Alfie Turcott, we're all on the same midget Triple A
- 49:02Speaker 6: teams as juniors in high school and I think we
- 49:04Speaker 6: had the best midget league in the in the world
- 49:07Speaker 6: at the time, going to where guys are fourteen years
- 49:10Speaker 6: old and can't you know, they're they're too good for
- 49:12Speaker 6: a team Detroit, so they move their family to Chicago
- 49:15Speaker 6: when they go there and play like you should not
- 49:17Speaker 6: have to leave the state of Michigan. Now there's a
- 49:19Speaker 6: time when you have to. I mean, you know, you
- 49:20Speaker 6: get to juniors and you go to the USHL and
- 49:22Speaker 6: that's a fantastic league, but you know, when you get drafted,
- 49:26Speaker 6: they have to move. But I think people are just
- 49:28Speaker 6: they're just chasing the next thing, and instead of being
- 49:30Speaker 6: really good where they're at first and then moving, they
- 49:34Speaker 6: think the problem is where they're at and they need
- 49:35Speaker 6: to get somewhere else. And I think I think Michigan,
- 49:38Speaker 6: the state of Michigan or hockey is really good and
- 49:40Speaker 6: we're getting good players, but I think we're leaving a
- 49:42Speaker 6: lot on the table because we're a microcosmo.
- 49:45Speaker 5: What's going on all over the place.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Figure it out, Michigan. Dan, thank you so much for
- 49:52Speaker 2: your time. I appreciate it. That's Danton Cole and I
- 49:55Speaker 2: could talk to you all day about just so many
- 49:57Speaker 2: amazing stories Michigan, your time in Tampa, Chicago, everywhere. So
- 50:02Speaker 2: thank you so much for your time, and hopefully we'll
- 50:04Speaker 2: talk soon.
- 50:05Speaker 5: All right, my pleasure. Thanks a lot. It's a lot
- 50:06Speaker 5: of fun, all right.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Thanks once again to Dan Cole.
- 50:17Speaker 2: He was terrific.
- 50:19Speaker 1: As far as they're Cinophon sixty. This week, I really
- 50:21Speaker 1: wanted to go watch Highest to Lowest working Friday night,
- 50:23Speaker 1: went right to the theater there in Seacaucus, right where
- 50:26Speaker 1: MLB Networking Angel that We're Kids sold out JD in
- 50:28Speaker 1: a Friday night, A lot of demand for the latest
- 50:30Speaker 1: Spike Lee joint, fifth time him and Denzel Washing reunited.
- 50:33Speaker 1: So yeah, I didn't get a chance. I watched the
- 50:36Speaker 1: Corosala movie again, which is an all time classic that's
- 50:38Speaker 1: called High and Low, and Spike is remaking it now.
- 50:41Speaker 1: This movie called Highest to Lowest and High and Low
- 50:43Speaker 1: is a great, great Corosala film. It's one of his
- 50:46Speaker 1: best and Spike's a big corsela guy he's remade Asian
- 50:49Speaker 1: movies before. It didn't go well. He did Old Boy
- 50:51Speaker 1: maybe a decade ago with Brolin. It was terrible. The
- 50:53Speaker 1: original Old Boys an outstanding movies. So I was like
- 50:55Speaker 1: a little skittish when you're trying to take on one
- 50:57Speaker 1: of the great masters. But great reviews so far. Tal
- 50:59Speaker 1: is gonna give us a little review because I still
- 51:01Speaker 1: want to watch. I don't want to anything spoiled yet,
- 51:03Speaker 1: but good reviews. To Artel, what did you think of
- 51:05Speaker 1: Hyas Solois which was not sold out in Los Angeles?
- 51:09Speaker 3: Definitely not sold out in Los Angeles.
- 51:11Speaker 1: I enjoyed it.
- 51:11Speaker 3: I'm a I'm a big Spike Lee fan. I was
- 51:13Speaker 3: thrilled to see another Spike Denzel collab. You know, it's
- 51:17Speaker 3: like it's like when a new Scarcese DeNiro or Scarcese
- 51:20Speaker 3: DiCaprio movie comes out. It's really exciting and first time
- 51:24Speaker 3: since Inside Man seeing these two together. You know, Spike
- 51:27Speaker 3: definitely made some choices here that my friend who went
- 51:31Speaker 3: with me didn't quite get, and I think there were
- 51:34Speaker 3: some without giving anything away, there were a couple of
- 51:36Speaker 3: potential little holes in the plot. But it's a great
- 51:39Speaker 3: Denzel performance. And you know what's I really loved about
- 51:42Speaker 3: it is that some of my favorite Spike joints, if
- 51:46Speaker 3: you want to call him that, are the ones where
- 51:47Speaker 3: they're kind of like a love letter to New York,
- 51:49Speaker 3: where he shoots New York a ton and you get
- 51:51Speaker 3: the skyline and the neighborhoods and all that. And this
- 51:54Speaker 3: is like an all time love letter to New York.
- 51:57Speaker 3: You've got you've got Denzel playing this mogul living in
- 52:00Speaker 3: his penthouse in Dumbo, and you get you know, the
- 52:03Speaker 3: Brooklyn Bridge, and he shot all over New York and
- 52:06Speaker 3: a lot of shots at Boston sports fans, which I
- 52:09Speaker 3: definitely enjoyed. There's literally Nick Turturo, She's staring at the
- 52:14Speaker 3: camera yelling fuck Boston.
- 52:16Speaker 2: At one point.
- 52:17Speaker 1: So I enjoyed it a lot.
- 52:20Speaker 3: I think if you're not as into Spike Lee, you
- 52:24Speaker 3: might not get it as much. But as someone who
- 52:25Speaker 3: enjoys his films and love seeing Denzel, it's a great
- 52:28Speaker 3: Denzel performance. I think the character he's playing is supposed
- 52:31Speaker 3: to be younger than Denzel is. Bear in mind, Denzel
- 52:34Speaker 3: is seventy. I think the character was supposed to be like,
- 52:37Speaker 3: maybe more around fifty but still fun performance and really
- 52:42Speaker 3: enjoyed it. I want to hear what you think about
- 52:44Speaker 3: when you get a chance to see it.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Adn't well, yeah, what about me? Jesus Chop you too,
- 52:49Speaker 2: of course? What's your what's your? What do you think
- 52:53Speaker 2: Denzel's worst performance is in a film, because I feel
- 52:57Speaker 2: like he's always great.
- 52:59Speaker 3: Oh Ann, I'd love to hear your thought on this.
- 53:01Speaker 3: He's virtual too many times virtual.
- 53:04Speaker 1: He's a pretty bad movie him and Russell Crowe, which
- 53:06Speaker 1: on the Dan Levittard Show they bought it up and
- 53:08Speaker 1: that's laughed. He's like, man, I made Russell Crow's career.
- 53:11Speaker 1: What are you guys talking about? Virtue Watch. He's pretty
- 53:12Speaker 1: bad some of these action movies, I mean Falling, I
- 53:15Speaker 1: don't think is great, like some of those like you
- 53:17Speaker 1: know those they're kind of become a retrits and all
- 53:19Speaker 1: those action movies are not great. But when he's great,
- 53:21Speaker 1: he's unbelievable. I mean he's an all time genie. I
- 53:23Speaker 1: mean Malcolm Max Fences, he got game like love.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Him like he's an varetyat or two.
- 53:29Speaker 1: And I didn't think that was great either.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Yeah, not great.
- 53:32Speaker 1: He was doing a little scenery, you know, I was
- 53:34Speaker 1: like overall than he wasn't great only he was great
- 53:37Speaker 1: in it either. Oh the movie was, but with him
- 53:39Speaker 1: in spiked.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Together doing that, yeah, yeah ruined.
- 53:44Speaker 1: By the way that. One of the things that just
- 53:45Speaker 1: to quickly mention is twas mentioned New York Matthew Lebatique shot.
- 53:48Speaker 1: He's a cinematographer. He did Record for a Dream and
- 53:51Speaker 1: Darren Arnofski, So I rewatched Record for Gream last week,
- 53:53Speaker 1: which an unbelievable movie. I love that movie, but I
- 53:55Speaker 1: heard the way he shoots New York's great swooping camera
- 53:57Speaker 1: and stuff, and you're mentioning, you know, in Krosawa's movie
- 54:00Speaker 1: Hind and Low, it's a kidnapping movie, the one major
- 54:02Speaker 1: scene is on the train. So I love the fact
- 54:04Speaker 1: Spike did this. They're taking the fore train a Yankee
- 54:07Speaker 1: Stateium and that's where you're referencing the Boston sucks. But
- 54:09Speaker 1: I did hear that, So I do appreciate what Spike
- 54:11Speaker 1: and take his his flourishes and certainly make it his
- 54:14Speaker 1: owne always Eddington's the moay that I want to talk
- 54:16Speaker 1: to you guys about, which is from Ari Astor, who's
- 54:18Speaker 1: a terrific director. Obviously he did Hereditary, did Midsimar. He
- 54:22Speaker 1: came out as like this great horror movie guy and
- 54:24Speaker 1: then goes, hey, you know what, I kind of want
- 54:25Speaker 1: to serve a little bit. Everyone wants me to eat,
- 54:27Speaker 1: and I'm gonna go yang. He does Boways Afraid, which
- 54:29Speaker 1: is a really funny, nearly three hour movie about Jewish neuroses,
- 54:33Speaker 1: wasn't for everyone's taste. And now he makes Eddington, which
- 54:35Speaker 1: is a COVID movie. It's literally set during twenty twenty
- 54:38Speaker 1: and it's in a small town and it's out there
- 54:42Speaker 1: man again, he's getting away from what he was known for,
- 54:44Speaker 1: which is these horror movies instead of wreaking these really dark,
- 54:46Speaker 1: bleak comedies. It came out at Sundance, had a bit
- 54:48Speaker 1: of a mixed reception. It's really two movies. The first
- 54:51Speaker 1: half is a very dark comedy in which Joaquin Phoenix
- 54:54Speaker 1: plays the sheriff who's just flaunting COVID rules, doesn't want
- 54:57Speaker 1: to wear a mask, thinks the whole thing's ridiculous, and
- 55:00Speaker 1: then Pedro Pascal, who's in everything right now, feels like
- 55:02Speaker 1: it's mandated. You have to watch Patro Piscal's much the
- 55:05Speaker 1: overexposure of Pedro Pascal. He's there being the guy who's,
- 55:09Speaker 1: you know, more on the side of hey, let's be clear,
- 55:12Speaker 1: we have to wear a mask. He's the rules. He's
- 55:13Speaker 1: running for office. What King thinks ends up being a
- 55:15Speaker 1: sheriff is running for office basically just on anti COVID rules.
- 55:18Speaker 1: And some of the best jokes are really made at
- 55:20Speaker 1: the liberals, like there's this whole section where they're supporting
- 55:23Speaker 1: Black Lives Matter. It's really funny, really pointed stuff and
- 55:26Speaker 1: certainly very satirical. The second half thote takes a dramatic
- 55:29Speaker 1: departure in which it gets very dark. I mean when
- 55:31Speaker 1: I say black comedy, dark comedy, it is about as
- 55:34Speaker 1: bleak as it gets. But I did really enjoy because
- 55:36Speaker 1: Aria Astor is a unique filmmaker. It's definitely a good
- 55:38Speaker 1: antidote to Superman and all the super movies you see
- 55:41Speaker 1: at the summer. So particularly, I was thinking of tell
- 55:43Speaker 1: I think you'd enjoy Edding today. I feel like you're
- 55:45Speaker 1: an already. Astra Fante definitely is a unique director.
- 55:49Speaker 3: I've been hearing so much about this guy and have
- 55:51Speaker 3: not seen one of his films so and I've heard
- 55:54Speaker 3: a lot about Eddington, but he seems he's like definitely
- 55:57Speaker 3: having a moment right now. It seems like he's just
- 55:59Speaker 3: one of these guys who like very talented at a
- 56:02Speaker 3: pretty young age, is pretty accomplished a ready and yeah,
- 56:06Speaker 3: and Eddington seems pretty seems pretty contemporary as far as
- 56:10Speaker 3: the themes and the stories, and I love what keen,
- 56:13Speaker 3: So we'll definitely have to check that out.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Yeah, he's definitely a great actor. All right, that's your
- 56:19Speaker 1: cinephon says, go ahead, you do what you got. What
- 56:20Speaker 1: any movies you've seen lately? What you got?
- 56:22Speaker 2: No, I just was gonna say, Eddington, I got to
- 56:25Speaker 2: check that out. I just saw the trailer for it,
- 56:27Speaker 2: and uh, I have to check it out. Whalle Quene Phoenix.
- 56:31Speaker 7: Actually like right, oddball different locked the line right, Yeah,
- 56:34Speaker 7: he's always I mean his personality in real life, I
- 56:37Speaker 7: mean the whole Pedro Pascal OFVI it is, it's absolutely
- 56:40Speaker 7: ridiculous right now, like what you.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Were all over at, the whole sexual harassmus issue with him,
- 56:44Speaker 1: like touching.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Got it, he's still touching and anxiety in public Vanessa Kirby.
- 56:51Speaker 1: But apparently also says the male co stars as well,
- 56:53Speaker 1: not that we're making it way.
- 56:54Speaker 2: I've never seen that who's seen that? Adnan, Are you
- 56:57Speaker 2: into getting into a little Jay's talk now that we
- 57:00Speaker 2: finished in a file and sixty?
- 57:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I was about to say, Man, what a store
- 57:02Speaker 1: of this team has been there. They're poised to a playoffs?
- 57:04Speaker 2: Can I lead you?
- 57:05Speaker 1: Can?
- 57:05Speaker 2: I can I lead you into it?
- 57:08Speaker 1: I love it?
- 57:09Speaker 2: Yeah? This is this We're We're still weeks away from
- 57:13Speaker 2: Opening Night in the NHL, but it's the most exciting
- 57:15Speaker 2: time of the season in Major League Baseball and the
- 57:17Speaker 2: favorite baseball team of roughly half of the NHL's players,
- 57:20Speaker 2: The Traddle Blue Jays are poised to win a playoff
- 57:23Speaker 2: series for the first time in twenty sixteen. Avy, we
- 57:27Speaker 2: need your take here? Is this the fine Jesus? Is
- 57:30Speaker 2: this finally the year for the Jays? What sticks out
- 57:33Speaker 2: for you this season? Where does a vlad Junior rank
- 57:35Speaker 2: among the all time Jays? Give me your thoughts, add
- 57:39Speaker 2: Nan Verkers, the Jays man cometh. Let's go well, right.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Around Victoria Day May two to four, Memorial Day in America,
- 57:47Speaker 1: the Jays were like a five hundred team. They felt
- 57:49Speaker 1: like another mediocre team, probably gonna be around five hundred,
- 57:52Speaker 1: no big deal. And then also they take off ironically
- 57:54Speaker 1: their one big reagent signing was Anthony Santander. He was
- 57:57Speaker 1: hurt Dalton varshow out. They call up Addison Barge, who's
- 58:00Speaker 1: been a great story banging down the door. He's been
- 58:03Speaker 1: slucking and has been really one of the stories of
- 58:05Speaker 1: this Jay's team. They've had a lot of unherlded players
- 58:08Speaker 1: and like when you look at their lineup, their five
- 58:09Speaker 1: through nine has been great. So Varsha has come back,
- 58:12Speaker 1: by the way and still slugging the ball great. But
- 58:13Speaker 1: Adamson Barger, Ernie Clement, Heineman Straw rotation wise, you know,
- 58:18Speaker 1: Eric Lower came out of nowhere, has been a great
- 58:20Speaker 1: starter for them. Their bullpen, little Rodrigue has been great.
- 58:23Speaker 1: I'd make the hockey analogy. You'd be like, if your
- 58:25Speaker 1: fourth line becomes the best fourth line of hockey, Oh
- 58:27Speaker 1: my god. If these guys can score a scular a
- 58:29Speaker 1: top line can score. And some of the concern earlier
- 58:31Speaker 1: on JD was that Vlad is good, not great. Bo's okay,
- 58:35Speaker 1: But now the stars sicked up big time as well.
- 58:37Speaker 1: And to your question about Vlad again, the first half
- 58:40Speaker 1: he was fine, just wasn't hitting many home runs. Even
- 58:42Speaker 1: now he's got twenty home runs. People like, hey man
- 58:43Speaker 1: for five hundred million dollars, I'm expecting thirty thirty five
- 58:45Speaker 1: home runs. But if you look at his numbers now,
- 58:48Speaker 1: it reminds me of in basketball. If you see a
- 58:50Speaker 1: guy who shoots forty percent from three, fifty percent from
- 58:53Speaker 1: the field, ninety percent from the free throw line, that's
- 58:55Speaker 1: like Vlad. He's hitting three hundred, he's a four hundred
- 58:58Speaker 1: on base and he's a five hundred luck Like, dude,
- 59:00Speaker 1: that's a nine hundred oh ps Like, that's outstanding numbers.
- 59:02Speaker 1: So he was facing a little bit criticism earlier in
- 59:05Speaker 1: the season, slow start, specifically with power. Lad always gets
- 59:07Speaker 1: on bas He'll draw walks, he hits the ball hard,
- 59:10Speaker 1: like his exit field is great. But now the powers back,
- 59:12Speaker 1: it's great. Boba Sheett now having a healthy full season
- 59:14Speaker 1: last year was a real disappointment. Was it an aberration?
- 59:17Speaker 1: Was he on the decline? No, dude, he's gonna leave
- 59:19Speaker 1: the league. And it hits like he's great. So you
- 59:20Speaker 1: have a Blue Jays team which has superstars in Vladimba,
- 59:24Speaker 1: George Springer's having his best year in four years. His
- 59:26Speaker 1: legging percentages back to what it was in twenty twenty one,
- 59:28Speaker 1: and then you've got good stories that I mentioned barjar Clement.
- 59:31Speaker 1: The concern is, this is your question was as far
- 59:32Speaker 1: as them being contenders, they're starting pitching is bottom ten
- 59:36Speaker 1: in baseball and they don't happen true, right, they don't
- 59:38Speaker 1: have a true age. Barrios is in the area of four.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Gosman's three eight nine. Shane Bieber they just got from Cleveland.
- 59:44Speaker 1: He's been out for Tommy John for a year and
- 59:46Speaker 1: a half. He's gonna make his first start. Looks like
- 59:47Speaker 1: later this week with the Blue Jays against the Marlins.
- 59:50Speaker 1: So he won the side on five years ago. He's
- 59:51Speaker 1: been a great pitcher, but it's been five years, so
- 59:53Speaker 1: you're really relying on past history. He's looked great. So
- 59:55Speaker 1: from the miners, can that translates to the majors? We
- 59:58Speaker 1: shall see. So I when I look at the other
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: contenders in the AL, I do think the blue Jays
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: pitching is a little susceptible. Hoffin a good closure but
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: prone to giving up some bad performances. But are they legit?
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Like yeah, Like I think they're gonna win this division.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: And the overarching question is this, can they finally win
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: a playoffs game? They don't want a playoff game in
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: the run of bow and a flat right. I haven't
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: won a serious since twenty sixteen, so it'd be really
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: important NEXTU you finally see them win, because I do
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: think Bo's gonna get like two hundred million dollars. He
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: could be out the door. You know what that's like
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: when two guys get drafted or kind of brought up
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: in the organization at the same time. One guy got
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: five hundred million dollars, the other guy wants to get
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: paid to The Jays can't low ball Bo. If they
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: didn't campaig him, he could be done. Chris Bassett's depending
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: free agents. So listen, man, it's a great time to
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: be a baseball fan. Jays fans should be excited. I
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: do think they win that division. They're five up on
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: the Red Sox or six up on the Yankees. And
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Tal has a George Springer tidbit for us. By the way,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: he's a Connecticut guy, the pride of hard hitting New Britain.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: What do you got?
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: That's right?
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: A Yukon alum and the Little Ti. It is a
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: hockey show, so had to present a little hockey tidbit.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: George Springer attended avon Old Farms with Stanley Cup champion
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: Nick Benino. There you go, there's my tidbit.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Ain't nobody nobody.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: That was an all time great call those.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: A great little those a great little Blue Jays. Drop
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: down for everybody back home. I appreciate you and you're
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: very good. Go ahead at your gohead. I just find
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: with baseball it's so interesting you see more, you know,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: like you see more of these teams lately in the past,
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: you know ten years that are five hundred kind of
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: milling around and then they just explode and catch lighting
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: in a bottle. You don't see that often in like hockey,
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: you see it. You know, the Saint Louis Blues are
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: probably recent memory that the team in nineteen that you know,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: worst team in the league and then exploded after January.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: But it's so hard to make up ground in the
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: in the NHL versus baseball. You get these teams on
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: you know these you know, you're playing three four games
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: back to back and you could really catch fire if
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: things kind of line up the right way. So that's
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: it's good to see the Blue Jays. You know, hopefully
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: they it'll kind of be funny. You know, we're tying
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: this in a hockey it'll kind of funny if they
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: win a series before, you know, even though they please
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: have won a series, but if they go deep in
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: the playoffs and yeah, they become Toronto's team.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Well, in the AL, it's wide open. So, like somebody
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: said to me, could you see a scenario in which
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: they win the World Series? I go, I can't really
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: see them winning, but can I see them making the
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: World Series? I'm like, yeah, Like they're they're better than
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the Yankees, they're better than the Red Sox right now,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Detroit's real even slumping recently. Houston's been up and down.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Seattle I think looks pretty strong, but they're still a
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: game in half out of the division.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: So you're right.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: I mean, Toronto can end up being the Jayson b.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Toronto's teams winning and you're still they're flickering away.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Who's your prediction to win?
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I still think in the nationally, the Dodgers, like Genie,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: they've been slumping. Recently, they faced the Padres Big Series.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: What happened? They swept the Padres like no problem. Padres
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: had won thirteen to fifteen games. Like heard, they go guys,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: the changing the guard Dodgers, like watch this Bam swept
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: so like I will call out LA when they lose.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: I'm not going to count against them one hundred percent
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: of because you can't do that in sports ago, and
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: I think it kind of can. Like when I watch
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: these guys they do it.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: It's crazy. Yeah, They're one of the only light switch
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: teams that I've seen in a long time that can
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: just we don't really, Let's just get a lot like
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: a little bit like Florida, get to the playoffs. We'll
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: be fine.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I want to get your thoughts on smelling salts before
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: we depart. The NFL sent an interesting memo to its
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: teams a couple of weeks ago, tell me they could
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: not administer smelling salts or ammonia capsules to their players,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: although players could by their own little pick me up.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: I bring it up because you know how popular smelling
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: starts are in the NHL. You see players using. They
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: get kind of that wide. I'd look, JD, how much
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: do they help? Where are you out on smelling salts
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: helping you during the game.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: It becomes like a fixation to a point where you know,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: for me, it it just the sensation of you know,
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: sniffing the smelling salts and you're like it kind of burns.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: It does wake you up a bit, but it's not
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: like this.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: For me.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: It's never been this crazy thing where I was like,
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: oh my god, I'm alive. Like Jonah Hill is like
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Jonah Hill, Jonah Hill and get him too the Greek.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: You know. It's it's not like a Jeffrey, but it's
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: it gives a good shot, and it's I mean, man,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: does it burn. It burns, So I mean maybe there
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: it's one of those things smelling. So it's you're gonna
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: do studies on it. It's gonna be like it just
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: burns holes in your brain or some shit like that,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: or like you're people are blind and they're just gonna
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: have some random study come out to Campella June in
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: the next ten to twenty years. They just get ahead
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: of it now. But yeah, it's it's I feel like
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: the NFL. There's a fucking league that needs smelling salts.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: It's the NFL because I mean, you got to be
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: so on top of your game and it's such a
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: car crash sport. Especially certain positions. I feel like you
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: should probably so you know, nobody kills anybody in the NFL.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: I feel like the linebackers and like the safety should
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: not be allowed to take it, but like the kicker
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: and the punter can take it.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: That's actually a great idea, the one who is at
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: the most disadvantage, Like, yeah, the smallest guy. Hey, the kicker,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: he's like five ten buck eighty, go ahead, buddy, go nuts.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: But the linebacker, we don't need that.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: We don't need you, we don't need two seventy absolute
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: made a muscle man coming Downhill on smelling salts, on
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: basically bath salts, just eating his own face just to
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: murder you. I'm like, we don't need that.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: I think George Kittle came out with saying how frustrating
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: he was, but he's like, dude, we gotta have her
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: smelling salts. Like oh, what fun is life could be
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: if you can't have the smelling salts. I'm like, hey, man,
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: I'm sure sure it makes an impact. I just like
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: that when you made a Jonah Hill drug reference, I
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: would have thought immediately Wolf of wall Street, but instead
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: you went and get him to the Greek under the
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: radar like it.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: I honestly I think get Him to the Greek does
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: not get enough credit. I think it is so funny. Yea,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: it is so ridiculous, but it is absolutely so funny
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: because it paints such a funny picture of like, you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: rock stars and I hearing stories from a couple of
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: people that have like I mean, it's very on brand
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: with what shit goes on in that world. But it's
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: just I just found that scene, the Jeffrey scene is
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: the best to think about a Jeffrey. It goes away,
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: but then it comes back.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Another rewatch here for you. Send up on sixty. Go
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: check out Good in the Greek if you haven't seen
