- 0:00Speaker 1: Sean, what's the deal with Owen Chambliss? Why do people
- 0:02Speaker 1: think this is some sort of a savior for the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Nebraska football team? He's one of 11 out there. He's
- 0:08Speaker 1: a transfer. He's never played here before, but there's this
- 0:11Speaker 1: incredible emphasis on his presence on the field. Walk us
- 0:14Speaker 1: through the Owen Chambliss story.
- 0:17Speaker 2: He led San Diego State in tackles last year. What
- 0:21Speaker 2: was it? As they call him, the general of the defense.
- 0:25Speaker 2: That's what they call him here now as far as
- 0:27Speaker 2: leading the charge and Scored very well on his pro
- 0:30Speaker 2: football focus grade in his first game back. You know,
- 0:32Speaker 2: things just looked cleaner, operated better with him out there
- 0:37Speaker 2: running the show. I mean, he was Vincent Shavers kind
- 0:40Speaker 2: of in that role the week before when he wasn't
- 0:43Speaker 2: out there. I just think it's an important part of
- 0:45Speaker 2: your defense, almost the quarterback, the guy that kind of
- 0:48Speaker 2: sets the table for the entire defense when he plays.
- 0:51Speaker 1: All right. Well, he probably didn't get blocked as well
- 0:53Speaker 1: in the Mountain West Conference, as he will in the
- 0:56Speaker 1: Big Ten, but we'll see how it goes.
- 0:57Speaker 2: What's wrong with him?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Well, I, I, I'd like to see guys prove they
- 1:02Speaker 1: can do it here before we start bronzing statues.
- 1:05Speaker 2: He had a good first game.
- 1:08Speaker 1: He did have a good first game against a team
- 1:10Speaker 1: that's liable to lose every game this year. That's all. Uh,
- 1:14Speaker 1: just before we bronze statues, let's see what he can
- 1:17Speaker 1: do against a guy that blocks them. That's all. He
- 1:20Speaker 1: might be great, but let's hold on.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Um, all right.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Let me talk about North Dakota. Uh, Now, North Dakota
- 1:26Speaker 1: State has been a powerhouse of college football, maybe the
- 1:29Speaker 1: most underrated program in the country over the last 15
- 1:32Speaker 1: or 20 years. They've produced NFL guys. They've won big
- 1:36Speaker 1: games and national championships. Talk about the state of high
- 1:39Speaker 1: school football up there. When did North Dakota suddenly become
- 1:43Speaker 1: a football state?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, high school football there, the numbers are really limited
- 1:48Speaker 2: in both South and North Dakota. There's just not a
- 1:50Speaker 2: lot of Class A-level programs if you're going like to
- 1:55Speaker 2: that level, but there are developmental prospects. Kids, they get
- 1:59Speaker 2: a lot of their players from Minnesota, Wisconsin, in the
- 2:03Speaker 2: surrounding areas. And they get some Nebraska kids there, too.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It's not just North Dakota kids by any means. It
- 2:08Speaker 2: wouldn't be enough guys. But, you know, you find the
- 2:11Speaker 2: developmental linemen that can play. And you get them, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: for five years, hopefully, in two or three years. You know,
- 2:20Speaker 2: a 250-pound type kid. Like, their left tackle, Trey Spaden,
- 2:23Speaker 2: is from Millard West. He was a 6'7 tight end
- 2:26Speaker 2: in high school. And now he's 6'7, 308 pounds. And
- 2:29Speaker 2: he's an NFL draft pick. But... that's the track record
- 2:35Speaker 2: of what those Dakota schools have all done over the years.
- 2:39Speaker 2: They have the patience to build on some of these guys.
- 2:42Speaker 2: In the Power Four, there's so much more pressure to
- 2:45Speaker 2: bring guys in that can play now and play immediately.
- 2:48Speaker 2: A 250-pound tight end in high school that you want
- 2:51Speaker 2: to play on the offensive line wouldn't be able to
- 2:53Speaker 2: play in the Power Four. I just think there's different
- 2:56Speaker 2: developmental philosophies that you see in the FCS ranks. And
- 3:00Speaker 2: Eric Schmidt, who comes from that Kalen DeBoer mafia of coaches,
- 3:05Speaker 2: he worked with DeBoer at Washington. It's interesting, all these
- 3:08Speaker 2: Dakota guys that have had success, a lot of them
- 3:10Speaker 2: kind of have intertwined with DeBoer in some way or another.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And Schmidt worked with him at Washington and obviously has
- 3:17Speaker 2: the background, or they worked in the Dakotas together, too.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Now, North Dakota State has joined the Power Conferences. North
- 3:24Speaker 1: Dakota U, who Nebraska's playing this week, is going to
- 3:26Speaker 1: stay at the FCS level. But North Dakota State is
- 3:30Speaker 1: now a member of the Pacific 10 Conference, or Pac-8, 10, 12,
- 3:33Speaker 1: 14 Conference. Mountain West. Yeah, Mountain West, which is essentially
- 3:37Speaker 1: the rebuilding of the old Pac-12. Do you think that
- 3:41Speaker 1: North Dakota State, because of that, and the retooled Mountain West,
- 3:44Speaker 1: has a chance to join the elite of college football
- 3:48Speaker 1: and be a regular playoff contender?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Well, kind of the higher-branded programs like Washington State, Oregon State,
- 3:54Speaker 2: they re-launched the Pac-12. North Dakota State is in the
- 3:58Speaker 2: Mountain West, and UNLV and New Mexico are kind of
- 4:01Speaker 2: the bell cows in that league now. But they're with
- 4:04Speaker 2: them at this point. But yeah, North Dakota State... The
- 4:07Speaker 2: move has gone very well for them, and they have
- 4:10Speaker 2: a chance to win the Mountain West in their first
- 4:12Speaker 2: year and could potentially get a college football playoff spot
- 4:16Speaker 2: as the at-large. A lot depends on kind of Boise State, Memphis,
- 4:19Speaker 2: and Western Michigan, probably the three best teams right now.
- 4:23Speaker 2: But it's been a very good move. But on the
- 4:26Speaker 2: other side of it, it's gone very well for North
- 4:28Speaker 2: Dakota this year. They're ranked number six right behind South
- 4:31Speaker 2: Dakota State in the Missouri Valley at this point. And
- 4:35Speaker 2: they think they can contend for the national championship. So, yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 2: they're playing high-level football at all of those schools right
- 4:41Speaker 2: now in the Dakotas.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Can North Dakota State compete in the transfer portal?
- 4:47Speaker 2: You know, they've never really had to do that. I mean,
- 4:50Speaker 2: it kind of remains to be seen what their money
- 4:54Speaker 2: situation is to get players in the portal. You know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: what kind of guys are they going after? Are they
- 4:59Speaker 2: going to continue to do things the way they've always
- 5:01Speaker 2: done them and find guys, develop guys? They've lost guys
- 5:05Speaker 2: in the portal, but... They've done an excellent job of
- 5:07Speaker 2: retaining kids there to stay there, too, over the years
- 5:11Speaker 2: because they get comfortable in the culture and they like
- 5:13Speaker 2: it there. So, yeah, I don't know if that's necessarily
- 5:17Speaker 2: their model. They're not going to go after guys that
- 5:19Speaker 2: Nebraska and Ohio State are going after in the transfer portal.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I think it's kind of a different recruiting philosophy regardless
- 5:26Speaker 2: when they go in the portal. All right, Sean.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Great update.
- 5:29Speaker 1: We'll get an update on personnel if there are any
- 5:31Speaker 1: major changes ahead of the North Dakota game tomorrow. on
- 5:35Speaker 1: the Husker Buzz report every morning at 647 on 1110 KFAB.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Email here from Ronald says, I thought Callahan and Rosie
- 5:43Speaker 1: were going to get into fisticuffs.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Calm down, boys. It's just football.
- 5:47Speaker 1: This is what fans do. They go at each other
- 5:50Speaker 1: for 60 minutes.
