Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Vincent McAviney: UK Correspondent on Liam Payne's death, the statement from his family
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Israeli Foreign Minister has just confirmed that they have
- 0:03Speaker 1: killed the so called face of evil, Yaya Sinhwa. He's
- 0:07Speaker 1: the Hamas leader, architect of October seven, Vincent Mechavin, he's
- 0:10Speaker 1: our UK europe correspondent, Vincent. How did this happen?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Well, we, as you say, have just had that confirmation.
- 0:18Speaker 2: We know that Israel has been on a renewed offensive
- 0:21Speaker 2: the IDF in Gaza, and as we understand it, they
- 0:25Speaker 2: got into a conflict with a group of Hamas fighters.
- 0:30Speaker 2: One of them was killed. They believed it to be
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yaya Sinhwa. We saw graphic images online of someone that
- 0:38Speaker 2: was suspected to be him lying in rubble of a
- 0:40Speaker 2: building in the aftermath of intense military conflict with clearly
- 0:44Speaker 2: fatal injuries. Now we understand that Israel used dental records
- 0:48Speaker 2: and DNA because he was held prisoner for a number
- 0:51Speaker 2: of years by Israel in jail. He was released in
- 0:54Speaker 2: twenty eleven and they've now used DNA profiling to confirm
- 0:59Speaker 2: we believe that it is him. So this is a
- 1:01Speaker 2: big victory in Israeli minds. He was, as you say,
- 1:05Speaker 2: the architect of October the seventh, which killed over twelve
- 1:09Speaker 2: hundred people. Those hostages, two hundred and fifty were abducted,
- 1:13Speaker 2: some still stuck in Gaza. No hostages were recovered in
- 1:17Speaker 2: this mission, but I think in Tel Aviv they will
- 1:21Speaker 2: be celebrating what they think will be a clear a
- 1:25Speaker 2: part of their victory in Gaza against Hamas.
- 1:28Speaker 1: In intro and fascinating. As you say, it sounds almost like,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know, by accident, not that he was particularly targeted,
- 1:34Speaker 1: but that he came into confrontation with them. Let's talk
- 1:37Speaker 1: about the One Direction style. Liam Payne has obviously died
- 1:40Speaker 1: in Argentina. What's the reaction being like in the UK.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I mean it was a real shock reaction really because
- 1:47Speaker 2: you know, One Direction were globally famous and they were
- 1:52Speaker 2: from you know, slightly humble beginnings, a reality show The
- 1:56Speaker 2: X Factor on ITV here, and he was only thirty
- 1:59Speaker 2: one years old. You know, he had been going through
- 2:03Speaker 2: struggles and he'd admitted to problems with alcohol. He had
- 2:06Speaker 2: been to rehab. But still for a lot of young people,
- 2:11Speaker 2: you know, this is a band that they grew up with.
- 2:13Speaker 2: They sold out concerts, they sold out albums, They were
- 2:16Speaker 2: constantly you know, in the media on TV for sort
- 2:19Speaker 2: of the five six years that they were together, so
- 2:21Speaker 2: there's a lot of shock and sadness about this. He had,
- 2:23Speaker 2: of course a relationship with Sheryl Cole, the singer from
- 2:27Speaker 2: Girls Allowed, a few years ago and they had a son,
- 2:29Speaker 2: seven year old, Bare Pain, and there's a lot of
- 2:32Speaker 2: sadness for that little boy. And of course Liam Payne's
- 2:36Speaker 2: wider family and his bandmates and friends. There hasn't been
- 2:40Speaker 2: any statements yet from the rest of the band, that's
- 2:44Speaker 2: of course Zaye Malik, Harry Styles Nihor and Louis Thompson.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But there has been a statement now from his family,
- 2:53Speaker 2: Liam Payne's family saying they are heartbroken and that Lian
- 2:56Speaker 2: will live forever in our hearts and will remember him
- 2:58Speaker 2: for his kind, funny and so.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Very sad, isn't it very said? Thank you very much
- 3:03Speaker 1: for that update. Vincent macinbee are UK and Europe correspondent.
