- 1:23of Old Time Radio. We will celebrate one thousand episodes with a second download
- 1:30on Tuesday, so I'll be looking for that. Well. Now it's time
- 1:36for today's episode of the Lineup the Railroad Roundhouse Roundup case. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:44we take you a noile behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a
- 1:47great American city where one of the cold, glaring lights will pass before us,
- 1:52the innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. This is
- 1:59the enough. Oh man, are cline? You're busy tonight? Yeah?
- 2:38Stillman, boys are in the line. Half of the people in here witnesses.
- 2:42We stillman boys are popping. Isn't they deserve a good audience. We
- 2:46are still going to play Tuesday as far as I know. Yeah, look,
- 2:51uh, this time, let's settle on a limit and stick to it.
- 2:53Yeah, it starts getting out of it. Sure it doesn't. It's
- 2:57a stupid partner of yours. Have stupid irish. He gets real courageous when
- 3:00he wins a few bucks diamond Jim Grebb, I think he's been taken ground.
- 3:06Kid. Let's stay away from some of those wild clings. He gets
- 3:07a low ball with Jack's wild. What is that really? Well, it's
- 3:13almost that he had something wild and lord oh he didn't play and he was
- 3:16just kidding with my money. He was kidding. May I have your attention
- 3:21be few people out there on the other side of the wild the audience.
- 3:27Okay, thank you. My name is Greb, Sergeant Matt grev i' let
- 3:31to spread the line up to you. Each and the suspects you will see
- 3:36will be number. I'll call off a number, the name and charge at
- 3:40the end of each line. When I ask for questions or identifications, call
- 3:45out the number. If you're shore, are not too short of a suspect,
- 3:49have him held the officers who took your name. When I assist you,
- 3:53they are seated among you. When the prisoners leave here, they are
- 3:57sent to the last room and dress back into their jail, for it makes
- 4:00it quite difficult to bring them back after they leave here. The questions I
- 4:05asked these suspects, I'm merely to get a natural tone of voice, So
- 4:10do not pay too much attention to their answers, as they often lie.
- 4:15Okay, bring on the line, all right, come on, keep it
- 4:18moving right over here at the end of the stage. Now turn and face
- 4:24but hands to your sides, look straight ahead. When I call your name

- 9:11just with a minor examination, I'd say she'd been dead about a week
- 9:15in the trunk. Yeah, it looks like strangulation. It's a little hard
- 9:20to tell right now, but I'll do one off top. See as soon
- 9:22as we get her downtown. Okay, I'll see you down there, right
- 9:26okay, boys cleared up. Where's your manager in his room? The names
- 9:30Fisher. Let's go talk to him. You haven't had one in a trunk

- 9:52about a week. You got somebody looking over three thirty eleven. Yeah,
- 9:56cargo's up there. We talked with Fisher, so about it in cargo.

- 10:24should say live in free with her husband and mister Green. Yes, he
- 10:30hasn't been around for about a week. I'll bet he did it. Uh
- 10:35with both of them gone for a week didn't you miss h When Green left,
- 10:39he said he and his wife are planning a short trip. I didn't
- 10:41think anything until I opened that trunk. Boy, that was the most awful
- 10:46thing I've ever seen. I'll think about that the rest of my life.
- 10:50Did the Greens arguement? Not too much? They had a couple of good
- 10:54wood. But who don't wait my wife gets home. She never did like
- 11:00Green told me I should get rid of them. Why she want that?
- 11:03She didn't like him. Green told her the mind of business one day,
- 11:07and she didn't like him after that. Not much reason though, she you
- 11:11and me. I wish small people would tell my wife the mind of business?

- 11:46He paid his rent. I never asked him what he did. He
- 11:50went very friendly, didn't go out much, but won a good description.
- 11:54Oh, I can give you that. You know. I never thought i'd
- 11:58get mixed up like this. You read about things like this, but you
- 12:03never think you're going to get mixed up in the coffee. I think it's
- 12:07boiling over the excuse me? Sure well you think ben? I don't know.
- 12:13Husband, sure looks like it. It isn't. He gotta have a

- 12:41a woman and stuffed her in the trunk. Yeah, I heard everybody's making
- 12:46coffee. I was getting tired. You want something, Yeah, don't take
- 12:50a cup. Any suspects her husband he disappeared about the same time the woman
- 12:58was killed. Manager gave us a pretty good description, and lab boys got
- 13:03some clear prints from the room running a check on them. Mound Hey a
- 13:09little strong, and it probably is. I didn't measure. Got any identifications
- 13:15on the Stillman boys. Six. Oh great, I had a little trouble
- 13:18too. You missed a good show. Rap Stillman got sore this kid brother,
- 13:24we nearly hit a family, fucked on the stage. You made better
- 13:26coffee, Yeah, Bob Stillman's clothes I think maybe he's going to tell us
- 13:31all about it. You need me, he likes you. Okay, we'll
- 13:35be down. Can I come here? Yeah? Say, maybe you should
- 13:39bring some of that coffee. You could give it to stillman one swallow all
- 13:43that stuff. And you confess to anything, You're sure you get them grouchy
- 13:46in your old age. And you'd think, after being married eleven years of
- 13:50at least to learn how to make a good cup of coffee. Molly's neglected
- 13:54my education. Oh no, I don't blame your false on that sweet little
- 13:56girl. Ah, you're prejudiced because you te tell you what about the woman
- 14:03in the trunk? How long? Dave says about a week? He's done

- 14:43just blame. But I'm Bob here and nuts. You're just trying to work
- 14:46us. Look, Bob, six witnesses identify the three of you. For
- 14:50Pete's sake, lay off. I don't care if six dozen people identified us.
- 14:54I'm just tired, Bob. Yeah, yeah, what is it?
- 15:00But it's important. I wouldn't. If you're smart and you're I can't,

- 15:28we wait for me. I'll be right out. Don't believe what you
- 15:31said, Bob. We know what you were doing, and why keep fast.

- 16:00He stuffed her in the trunk and skipped. So what's that got to do
- 16:03with me? You're twenty eight, aren't you? That's right. When Kirk
- 16:07was twenty eight, he was probably a lot like you, not the same
- 16:11recond he's only around thirty three. Now, look what's this all? Think
- 16:15about it? Man? Now he's killed somebody an LA eight the five.
- 16:19He is dead inside of a year. If you catching, we will think
- 16:25about it. Come on, man, what is it? Five card?

- 29:19out of here. This stuff is making me sick. Hey, h ooh,
- 29:25bitch Amy the lineup or before you passed the innocent, the vagrant,
- 29:45the thief, the murderer. Listen again next week when we again bring you
- 29:52the lineup. Hey, I have your retention. Read a few people up
- 29:57there on the other side of the wire the audience room, May I have
- 30:02your attention? Please thank you. My name is Greb, shouting Matt greb
- 30:07alexplain the lineup field each to the suspect. You will say will be numbered.
- 30:14I'll call off a number the name of John. If you have any
- 30:18questions identifications, please remember the number side of the present. The line up,
- 30:36starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie and Wally Mayer as Sergeant Matt Grebb,
- 30:41is written by Blake Edwards, with music composed and conducted by Eddie Dunstetter.
- 30:47Featured and tonight's cast were High Everback, Howard mcneer, Peter Leeds,
- 30:52Clayton Post, Dave Young, Sidney Miller and her Butterfield. The lineup is
- 30:57produced and directed by High Welcome Back Well. What stands out to me in
- 31:07this episode is the performance of Wally Mayre as a sergeant Matt Grabs. Sadly,
- 31:17this is believed to be the last original episode featuring Wally Mayer. There
- 31:26are two other episodes, but both are marked on the Digital Deli as possible
- 31:33rebroadcast, so this very well could have been the very last one that Wally
- 31:37Mayer originally recorded, with the two previous ones being reruns. This episode aired
- 31:45on on November twenty ninth, nineteen fifty one. There were a couple episodes
- 31:52after that, the December sixth on the Bastile Bound Bad Boys case, but
- 32:01that one we don't have in our possession, and then there was three episodes
- 32:07that were marked by the Digital Belly as possible rebroadcast. Mayor died on December
- 32:15twenty seventh, nineteen fifty one, a little less than a month after this
- 32:21episode aired, and it was definitely I think it's going to be hard to
- 32:28imagine the lineup without him because he really brought a great amount of humanity to
- 32:35the character of Matt Gribb and really this great dynamic between him and Bill Johnstone.
- 32:43That's just a classic. I haven't listened to a ton of the post
- 32:46Wally Mayor episodes, but it's definitely a huge loss to the program. It
- 32:52should be noted that December nineteen fifty one was not a good month for great
- 32:59radio character actors, playing the sidekit character on a detective shows that same month.
- 33:12Earlier in December, bartiny Yarborough, who played Ben Romero on Dragnet,
- 33:17passed away, and they actually made the episode The Big Sorrow in which Ben
- 33:27Romero died in the story I've never heard in any of the episodes I've listened
- 33:31to Postmatt greb any acknowledgment of the character, but he actually died on the
- 33:42day that The Big Sorrow aired. Well, here Greb. I believe in
- 33:46a couple of these future episodes that are rebroadcast, but this is the last
- 33:52original one, and in many ways I have to wonder, as I've listened
- 33:55to this performance by Mayor, how much this influenced the character of Frank Smith
- 34:05that would come on Dragnet because the character that Wally Mayre played was very different
- 34:13than Ben Romero. Romero was, I think while he was married, he
- 34:17was a lot more of a grumpy character, while Mayor played Matt Greb as
- 34:27this very quirky, fun character was just a lot of different characteristics, including
- 34:35trying to get the single lieutenant married off. So it's it's definitely as I've
- 34:46listened to this, I can definitely see how somehow or another, if not
- 34:52influencing Jack Webb directly, it may have influenced Ben Alexander. I mentioned this
- 35:00possibility before, but Ben Alexander was a game show host and businessman prior to
- 35:07taking on this responsibility, so it's fair, and he was a fan of
- 35:12Dragnet, so it's possible he also could have listened to the lineup as well.
- 35:16So it's definitely an interesting question as to how much you know Dragnet definitely
- 35:23influenced the start of the lineup, but did the lineup in some way influence
- 35:29the much better known Dragnet program. All right, well, that will do
- 35:32it for today. We'll be back with another episode of the Lineup next week.
