- 0:00This is Ground Signal, Markets and Economy, Monday,
- 0:02October 12, 2026. I'm Tenet. We are three sessions
- 0:06away from a decision that will define the rate
- 0:08environment through year -end. J .P. Morgan and
- 0:11Wells Fargo report tomorrow morning, CPI lands
- 0:13Wednesday, and the FOMC convenes October 27.
- 0:17What changed over the weekend, and why this week
- 0:20carries more weight than most? The S &P 500 closed
- 0:24Friday at 7 ,811. up 0 .59 % on the session,
- 0:29with Dow futures pointing flat into Monday. The
- 0:3210 -year Treasury yield sits at 5 .24%, just
- 0:37one basis point above last week's close. That
- 0:40yield has not materially moved in 10 days, and
- 0:44the market is reading that stability as a hold
- 0:46signal. The Fed funds futures market, tracked
- 0:49through CME pricing, currently puts an 82 % probability
- 0:53on a hold at the October 27 meeting. with an
- 0:5618 % chance of a 25 basis point hike still priced
- 0:59in. No cut is on the table. This week's CPI print
- 1:03on Wednesday will either reinforce the hold or
- 1:05reignite the hike debate. We'll come back to
- 1:07that. Equities. The S &P 500 at 7 ,811 is holding
- 1:12near its recent range, and the structure of this
- 1:15market is rotating. Technology has dominated
- 1:17performance for the last three months, but State
- 1:20Street's latest sector analysis flags financials
- 1:22as the next leg. That thesis gets tested this
- 1:25week. The Nikkei 225 closed essentially flat
- 1:29at 69 ,031, down 0 .02%. The Hang Seng gained
- 1:340 .25 % to 24 ,271. The DAX added half a percent,
- 1:41closing at 25 ,212. European equities are outperforming
- 1:45Asian markets modestly, supported by euro strength
- 1:48and improving industrial data. The VIX. The market's
- 1:52fear gauge is at 15 .48, up 4 .31 % on the session.
- 1:58That's not a distress reading, but it's a meaningful
- 2:00uptick ahead of a heavy data week. The options
- 2:04market is pricing slightly more uncertainty than
- 2:06it was a week ago. On earnings, JP Morgan and
- 2:09Wells Fargo both report Tuesday morning JP Morgan's
- 2:12call at 8 .30 Eastern, Wells Fargo at 10. According
- 2:15to FactSet, Q3 2026 EPS growth for the S and
- 2:20P500 is tracking higher than the initial estimate
- 2:23at the start of the quarter. The big banks are
- 2:26the first real data point on whether financials
- 2:28can carry this rotation. The key question, if
- 2:31JP Morgan posts strong net interest income, which
- 2:34tends to rise in a high -rate environment, it
- 2:37validates the financial sector thesis and could
- 2:40accelerate rotation out of tech. A miss on loan
- 2:43growth or credit quality would read very differently.
- 2:47Signal 4 on bank earnings this week. Fixed income.
- 2:50The yield curve is steep and holding. The 10,
- 2:53year at 5 .24, the 30, year at 5 .60, and the
- 2:582, year at 5 .02. The spread between 2s and 10s
- 3:03has normalized, a structural shift from the deep
- 3:05inversion we saw through much of 2024 and 2025.
- 3:09That normalization matters for banks. A steeper
- 3:12curve improves net interest margins. Money borrowed
- 3:15short and lent long becomes profitable again.
- 3:18It also suggests the market believes the economy
- 3:20can sustain higher rates without tipping into
- 3:22recession, at least for now. The 13 -week T -bill
- 3:26is at 4 .06%, up 35 basis points on a percentage
- 3:30basis today. Short -end yields are rising as
- 3:33markets price in a modestly more aggressive Fed
- 3:35stance. The ECB meets October 28 -29, one day
- 3:39after the FOMC closes, two central banks, back
- 3:42-to -back, with conflicting mandates. The ECB
- 3:45is navigating a softer European growth picture
- 3:48while the Fed is still fighting residual inflation.
- 3:50If the Fed holds and the ECB cuts, a real scenario,
- 3:54you get dollar strength and euro weakness in
- 3:57the same week. Signal three on fixed income.
- 4:00Signal four if Wednesday's CPI comes in hot.
- 4:04Currencies. The DXY, the dollar index against
- 4:07a basket of major currencies, is holding around
- 4:10102 .2. That's consistent with last week. Dollar
- 4:15strength is broad, supported by the rate differential
- 4:17between the U .S. and most other developed economies.
- 4:20For the Nomad audience, here are the current
- 4:23FX levels as of October 12. Dollar to Peruvian
- 4:27Sol, 3 .43. Dollar to Philippine Peso, 62 .73.
- 4:33Dollar to Indonesian Rupiah, 17 ,914. Dollar
- 4:37to Thai Baht, 33 .54. Dollar to Malaysian Ringgit,
- 4:424 .09. Dollar to Brazilian real, 4 .99. The ringgit
- 4:47and bot are relatively stable this week. The
- 4:50real has strengthened slightly, 4 .99 versus
- 4:525 .193 weeks ago, reflecting some Brazil -specific
- 4:56optimism around commodity export revenues. The
- 4:59rupiah continues to hold near the 17 ,900 level,
- 5:02a range that Bank Indonesia has been managing
- 5:05carefully. Watch the peso closely this week.
- 5:08At 62 .73, it's near recent lows for the dollar,
- 5:11meaning the peso has held reasonably well against
- 5:14the stronger DXY. Philippine remittance flows
- 5:17and the BSP's rate posture have been a stabilizing
- 5:20force. Signal 2 on EM currencies, no acute stress,
- 5:25but DXY strength is a slow bleed for most of
- 5:27these pairs. Crypto. Bitcoin is at $83 ,479,
- 5:33up 0 .67 % on the day. according to Coindesk
- 5:37data captured Monday morning. Market cap sits
- 5:40at $1 .68 trillion with 24, our trading volume
- 5:44of $9 .58 billion. Bitcoin has been in a tight
- 5:47range between $82 ,000 and $85 ,000 for the past
- 5:51two weeks, compression ahead of a catalyst. Ethereum
- 5:55is at $2 ,554, up 2 .17%. Solana at $111 .47,
- 6:01up 1 .81%. The altcoin market is showing slightly
- 6:06more upside momentum than Bitcoin today, a pattern
- 6:08that sometimes precedes broader risk on moves
- 6:10and sometimes just reflects rotation within crypto.
- 6:14The macro correlation to watch. If Wednesday's
- 6:17CPI prints soft, say 2 .8 % or lower, the market
- 6:21will reprice Fed odds toward a cut, risk assets
- 6:24rally, and Bitcoin could break above $85 ,000.
- 6:27If CPI runs hot, above 3 .2, the hike probability
- 6:31jumps, the dollar strengthens, And crypto faces
- 6:34selling pressure. Bitcoin is effectively a CPI
- 6:37trade this week. Signal 3. Commodities. Brent
- 6:41crude is at $103 .18 to $103 .35 per barrel,
- 6:46according to market reports from October 12.
- 6:48The Houthi attack on Riyadh's King Khalid International
- 6:51Airport last week sent Brent above $105 briefly.
- 6:55OPEC Plus held November output targets steady,
- 6:57and the EIA expects Brent to average around $105
- 7:00per barrel in the fourth quarter. WTI, West Texas
- 7:04Intermediate, is at 92 .66, up 0 .89%. The Brent
- 7:10WTI spread at roughly $10 to $11 reflects logistical
- 7:14and quality differentials, but also Middle East
- 7:16risk premium being priced into the global benchmark
- 7:19more aggressively than the domestic U .S. price.
- 7:22Gold is at $4 ,174 to $4 ,178 per ounce, down
- 7:27slightly on the day, about half a percent. Goldman
- 7:30Sachs Research has a year -end 2026 target, of
- 7:33$4 ,900. Citing persistent central bank buying
- 7:37and the argument that American retail investors
- 7:39remain dramatically under -allocated to gold
- 7:41relative to historical averages. If Goldman's
- 7:45thesis is right, the current pullback is noise.
- 7:47Signal three on gold, the structural bid is intact.
- 7:51Mobility signal. Three updates this week for
- 7:54the globally mobile audience. Thailand's destination
- 7:57Thailand visa, the DT5, remains active and fully
- 8:01operational. Thailand updated its supporting
- 8:04document requirements on September 1, 2026, so
- 8:07if you applied before that date or are planning
- 8:09to apply, check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- 8:12September 2026 guidance. The DT VI is a five
- 8:16-year multiple -entry visa designed for remote
- 8:18workers and long -stay tourism. It remains one
- 8:20of the cleanest options in Southeast Asia for
- 8:22geographic arbitrage. Malaysia's Durantau program
- 8:25is in a transition period. The Durantow Nomad
- 8:28module is now scheduled for implementation at
- 8:30the end of Q1 2027. That's a delay from earlier
- 8:33timelines. MDEC has acknowledged processing backlogs.
- 8:36If you're planning on Malaysia, factor that delay
- 8:39in. Durantow is still active in processing. It's
- 8:42just slower than expected. On the Philippines,
- 8:45there is no clearly confirmed, publicly opened
- 8:48digital Nomad visa as of this week. Executive
- 8:50Order 86 remains on the books, but the Bureau
- 8:53of Immigration has not opened formal applications.
- 8:56Treat current Philippines DN5 reports with skepticism
- 8:59until the BI confirms. Signal 2 on Philippines
- 9:03mobility. Watch for a formal announcement. Forward
- 9:06signal. Three things to watch over the next 72
- 9:09hours. First, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo Q3 earnings.
- 9:14Tuesday morning, starting 8 .30 Eastern. The
- 9:17key metrics are net interest income, loan growth,
- 9:20and credit quality. Strong NII with clean credit
- 9:23confirms the financial sector rotation thesis.
- 9:26A miss on any of those three changes the sector
- 9:28story for Q4. Signal 4. Second, U .S. September
- 9:32CPI. Wednesday, 8 .30 Eastern, Bureau of Labor
- 9:37Statistics release. The consensus expectation
- 9:39is a print in the 2 .8 to 3 .0 % range. Above
- 9:443 .2 % raises the FOMC hike probability meaningfully
- 9:47and forces a reassessment of the rate ceiling.
- 9:50Below 2 .7 opens the door to a November cut discussion,
- 9:53which markets currently assign near zero probability.
- 9:57This is the week's most consequential data point,
- 9:59signal four. Third, the FOMC meeting October
- 10:0327 to 28. Markets are pricing an 82 % hold probability.
- 10:08The decision itself is in two weeks, but this
- 10:11week's data will determine whether that probability
- 10:12holds or shifts dramatically. Jerome Powell's
- 10:16post -decision press conference on the 28th will
- 10:18be the real signal. Any language change around
- 10:21the pace of future decisions matters more than
- 10:23the rate outcome itself. Signal 4. This is Ground
- 10:27Signal, Markets and Economy, October 12, 2026.
- 10:31I'm Tenet. Stay sharp, stay mobile, and I'll
- 10:34see you at the next signal.
