- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, there's certainly a lot happening right around the Northern
- 0:03Speaker 1: Territory at the moment, and if you hadn't heard the news,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Senator Sam McMahon has indeed resigned from the Country Liberal Party,
- 0:10Speaker 1: effective from Friday, issuing a statement this morning that said
- 0:13Speaker 1: I have informed the COLP President, Management Committee, Leader of
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Nationals, the Honorable Barnaby Joyce MP, and the President
- 0:21Speaker 1: of the Nationals of my decision. This has not been
- 0:24Speaker 1: an easy decision and I have wrestled with it in
- 0:26Speaker 1: recent times. It brings to an end a thirty year association.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I feel I no longer have the confidence in the COLP.
- 0:34Speaker 1: She went on to say there are a number of
- 0:36Speaker 1: unresolved issues beyond the pre selection. The issues include formal
- 0:40Speaker 1: complaints lodged with Management Committee that have not garnered a response,
- 0:45Speaker 1: let alone an acknowledgment, and she went on to say
- 0:48Speaker 1: my intentions regarding the next election will become clearer as
- 0:52Speaker 1: the date draws closer, and that speculation regarding the next
- 0:55Speaker 1: parliamentary sittings in a week's time will also become clearer.
- 0:59Speaker 1: She currently doesn't have any plans for her future political
- 1:04Speaker 1: or otherwise, and she intends to vigorously pursue my private
- 1:08Speaker 1: Senator's Bill ensuring Northern Territory rights when Parliament returns, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: continue working hard for the Northern Territory. So that is
- 1:16Speaker 1: a statement there from Senator Sam McMahon. But what does
- 1:20Speaker 1: this mean now for the COLP? Are they still a
- 1:23Speaker 1: viable party?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Well?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Joining us on the line right now is the CLP
- 1:27Speaker 1: President Jamie de Brenny. Good morning to you.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Happy here, Cody, How are you very well?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Thank you, Jamie.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I tell you what an interesting way for the COLP
- 1:37Speaker 1: to start the year, Sam McMahon, Sam McMahon resigning from
- 1:42Speaker 1: the party, What does this mean for the CLP? Are
- 1:45Speaker 1: you still going to be able to operate as a
- 1:47Speaker 1: political party?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Of course we are, of course we are, and you've
- 1:51Speaker 2: I think I've stated this before. All the accusations in
- 1:53Speaker 2: regard to our nonconformances already undertaken with god legal advice,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and everything under our concertitution with affiliations to federal and
- 2:03Speaker 2: state parties is aligned with the Nationals under their associate
- 2:07Speaker 2: affiliate flaws in their constitution which was set up in
- 2:11Speaker 2: nineteen seventy nine. We've got full advice from the policy
- 2:13Speaker 2: writers that in both this nude rules everything. So we've
- 2:17Speaker 2: done all our due diligence regards to Sam, look for respect.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Sam's decided to do what she's doing and we move on.
- 2:27Speaker 2: We've got incredible candidates that were elected you know by
- 2:32Speaker 2: they pre selected by the same process, which is a
- 2:35Speaker 2: territory wide represented process, and we'll move forward, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 2: to senterprise. Sammy Ryan and team McFarlane are our ash party,
- 2:45Speaker 2: the double five one down, no matter what's putting in
- 2:47Speaker 2: front of us, and they won't fed the one while
- 2:49Speaker 2: we're worry about the next step. They're going to win
- 2:51Speaker 2: the setutation the title. So we've got a pub the
- 2:53Speaker 2: bulldog there.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So Jamie, with that legal advice that the CLP has
- 2:57Speaker 1: been provided, it has said this, you know that the
- 3:00Speaker 1: CLP is not going to have to cease.
- 3:03Speaker 3: As a party, are you you know, are you.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Required to have a certain number of members within the party.
- 3:10Speaker 2: No, we are actually associated with the Nationals Australia which
- 3:15Speaker 2: has been covenant. How their is everyone, it's Australia. It's
- 3:18Speaker 2: an association act. That's my understanding, and with that we're
- 3:22Speaker 2: compliance and yeah, and with Sam, it's the first part
- 3:25Speaker 2: of her with her statement, it's all respect to her,
- 3:28Speaker 2: and you know, if they're aspirations politically to keep going, congratulations,
- 3:33Speaker 2: we now know we have had to be respectful. We
- 3:36Speaker 2: do have a candidate in there. We've always been respectful
- 3:39Speaker 2: to Sam. We can promote center for the Senate. Damian
- 3:42Speaker 2: and Tina get to work and look, we've got to respect.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Now we're in probably the most difficult this is Sam
- 3:51Speaker 2: takes resources with her. Each candidate we're like to remember,
- 3:56Speaker 2: were now fighting for incuvenants have take of funded allowances
- 4:01Speaker 2: and provisions and resources to campaigns. We don't have that.
- 4:06Speaker 2: We're going to have to do what we are, which
- 4:08Speaker 2: is a territory party. We're true territory representation. But we're
- 4:12Speaker 2: going to have to rely on people to donate support
- 4:15Speaker 2: three voluntary and everything and then say to them, well,
- 4:18Speaker 2: we can say to you, you are donating your money
- 4:20Speaker 2: to the cause that would be spent on what you want,
- 4:22Speaker 2: which the taxpayers don't have that privilege.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So Jamie, does the nationals? I mean, look, does the
- 4:29Speaker 1: national membership cover the COLP.
- 4:34Speaker 2: It's my understanding and as I said, is yes, and
- 4:37Speaker 2: that's not just after these other affiliations and associations as well.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So Victoria everyone like that.
- 4:43Speaker 3: So yeah, so how many members of the CLP are they?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Well, at the moment, it's up and down everywhere. We're
- 4:51Speaker 2: actually restructuring. We don't have a firm that we're compliant.
- 4:55Speaker 2: We've always been compliant where we all need to be
- 4:57Speaker 2: and we'll keep doing that. Unfortunately, we we got here memberships,
- 5:00Speaker 2: we've got everything. We're restructuring our program. So I don't
- 5:04Speaker 2: have a firm figure and I'm not going to speculate,
- 5:06Speaker 2: but I know we are complying. We are always doing
- 5:09Speaker 2: that and it's part of our restructure internally that we
- 5:12Speaker 2: are doing so we can ensure that we can try
- 5:14Speaker 2: and this is the first stage of the federal elections
- 5:17Speaker 2: to save the territory. You know, there's enough water, bad enough,
- 5:20Speaker 2: we're drowning, but crime is killing us and we need
- 5:23Speaker 2: federal federal representation that's going to bring this to the
- 5:25Speaker 2: four you know we're dying, so good time and publicly
- 5:30Speaker 2: acknowledged Matt Patterson, the mayor of our Springs and his
- 5:34Speaker 2: statement that's their maid regards to crime. And I call
- 5:36Speaker 2: on every mayor being next counselor and that get behind
- 5:40Speaker 2: Madam Patterson and let's start taking this head on.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Well, we down.
- 5:45Speaker 2: There with him.
- 5:45Speaker 1: We are going to talk more about about that issue
- 5:48Speaker 1: of crime in Alice after eleven o'clock this morning. I've
- 5:50Speaker 1: got a business signer coming on to speak further to
- 5:53Speaker 1: us about that.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Too, Thank you. Yeah, because we don't have any acknowledgement
- 5:58Speaker 2: here with it. It's just things. By My fear is,
- 6:01Speaker 2: we've had a pregnant woman be knocked over being rob.
- 6:04Speaker 2: We've had seventy year olds rob, We've we've got statements
- 6:07Speaker 2: out today that bus drivers are just not even reporting.
- 6:12Speaker 2: We can't accept this. You have a look at even
- 6:14Speaker 2: look in the shelves, look like a bloody man makes film.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, look And like I said, we'll talk more about that,
- 6:19Speaker 1: but I am keen to just to just stick on
- 6:22Speaker 1: this issue of the senator at this point in time.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Does the CLP operate as I mean, are you an affiliation?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Are you either? You know, does the legislation Association?
- 6:34Speaker 2: We're association. We're associated with a federal party.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And that is the National Party. So what would happen?
- 6:41Speaker 1: What would happen if later this week Senator Sam McMahon
- 6:46Speaker 1: decided to join the NATS and run at the federal
- 6:50Speaker 1: election as a National Well.
- 6:53Speaker 2: He'll be a national representative, which would mean that we're
- 6:56Speaker 2: associated with that representation. That's purely is simply up to them.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I can't speculate, and I've got personal guarantees. And remember
- 7:04Speaker 2: this is the Nationals that have helped us to be
- 7:06Speaker 2: ensure we're compliant. We've talked to the policy writers that
- 7:10Speaker 2: wrote the policies, which is Liberals and everything, and our
- 7:12Speaker 2: legal advice that they've given us everyone is we are
- 7:15Speaker 2: police compliant where it is required for all our needs.
- 7:18Speaker 1: What would it mean though, I guess what would it
- 7:20Speaker 1: mean though Jamie if if if? And I'm purely speculating here,
- 7:24Speaker 1: but we know that she has a very good relationship
- 7:26Speaker 1: obviously with Barnaby Joyce and a very good relationship with
- 7:30Speaker 1: the National Party. So what would happen if if Sam
- 7:34Speaker 1: did decide to take that route? What would then happen
- 7:36Speaker 1: with the CLP's candidate just enter price.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It would not change the CLP would resent that's been
- 7:45Speaker 2: the CLP, And this is you know, it's just a
- 7:49Speaker 2: very big speculation. Realistically, you know, you're right. In a
- 7:53Speaker 2: good story you might have to go into story writing
- 7:55Speaker 2: would be good. Well, the scenario that comes out she
- 7:59Speaker 2: can run for the Liberals, can run for Labor. She
- 8:01Speaker 2: is still another candidate. We've put her hand up in
- 8:05Speaker 2: her mind, given choice.
- 8:07Speaker 1: But then in the Senate, though, Jamie. But then in
- 8:10Speaker 1: the Senate, obviously, you know, in the Senate, the CLP's
- 8:15Speaker 1: senator or whoever that may be, sits with the Nats.
- 8:18Speaker 1: So would it then make things difficult? And I know
- 8:21Speaker 1: I am speculating, but would it make things more difficult?
- 8:24Speaker 2: Look, well, well I don't know. We haven't got that scenario.
- 8:28Speaker 2: We don't choice. We have an agreement, which is the
- 8:31Speaker 2: long term that we prioritize sitting with the Nats, with
- 8:34Speaker 2: our per senity, our second tenancy Theligne with the Liberal
- 8:38Speaker 2: Now that's been something way back since nineteen seventy four,
- 8:42Speaker 2: you know, and in two years time as the fifty
- 8:44Speaker 2: years that's been there, it is speculation. Look, it's another scenario.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It's like today we've broken up and right we now
- 8:52Speaker 2: are not just Enterprise as our candidate as our only
- 8:55Speaker 2: Senate representative of the CLP. Let's get behind the Australia
- 9:00Speaker 2: and the Northern Territory. Because this is a very very
- 9:02Speaker 2: strong woman. I'll tell you what I tear anyone to
- 9:05Speaker 2: say that she doesn't speak out now, dare anyone.
- 9:07Speaker 1: One of the other things that Senator Sam McMahon said
- 9:10Speaker 1: in this statement is that there are a number of
- 9:12Speaker 1: unresolved issues beyond the pre selection. She says the issues
- 9:16Speaker 1: include formal complaints lodged with the management Committee that have
- 9:21Speaker 1: not garnered a response, let alone an acknowledgment.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Is that the case?
- 9:26Speaker 2: Sorry, sorry, I apologize that I've never heard that statement before.
- 9:30Speaker 2: As I said, I've just climbed out from inside the
- 9:32Speaker 2: bloody roof trying to find leaks because where it desert
- 9:35Speaker 2: and when that range, everything leaks. But look, there is
- 9:38Speaker 2: issues now, there is acknowledgement that happened accepted, and we're
- 9:41Speaker 2: dealing with their internal affairs and there are complaints and
- 9:46Speaker 2: not activation. So there's things that we have to do
- 9:48Speaker 2: and we're MoMA volunteers and it's due diligence will be undertaken.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm not going to come back with a response that
- 9:53Speaker 2: we don't have.
- 9:54Speaker 1: But if someone makes it, wouldn't you respond to somebody
- 9:57Speaker 1: if they do make a complaint, if is something that
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know that is a concern, But none is a complaint.
- 10:04Speaker 2: In regard to issues that Sam has had with people
- 10:09Speaker 2: inside the party, individuals inside the party, and that's going
- 10:14Speaker 2: to be dealt with. We two. We have to get
- 10:16Speaker 2: a response and that's an internal thing. And God help me,
- 10:19Speaker 2: Conservative politics throughout Australia and now there's problems everywhere. So
- 10:23Speaker 2: look you, that's SAMs Shorts. I don't want to lower
- 10:26Speaker 2: myself for this sor the standard and bagging people and
- 10:29Speaker 2: shit like that. We need to get on our positivity
- 10:32Speaker 2: for the territory. And it's not me. I'm not going
- 10:34Speaker 2: to bag out on Sam because I got so much
- 10:37Speaker 2: respect for her. She represented our emblem, which is we
- 10:41Speaker 2: gave her the privilege to do for three years and
- 10:44Speaker 2: I'm going to respect her for that. You know, as
- 10:46Speaker 2: long as I.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Know her well, Jamie, I am going to have to
- 10:49Speaker 1: wrap things up very quickly. How the supermarket shells looking
- 10:53Speaker 1: in Alice At the moment.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I'm actually just going to get smoke over the boys.
- 10:58Speaker 2: There's fans and trucks coming in. As I said, I
- 11:01Speaker 2: was funny when I was driving here. There's somebody on
- 11:03Speaker 2: John Law saying we're about to eat each other, and
- 11:06Speaker 2: beside me, I was getting a bit worried because I'd
- 11:08Speaker 2: be able to probly sight anyway. No, we're not that bad.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Amazing we get behind each other and always with a
- 11:18Speaker 2: roadkill and grab anyway.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Oh goodness mate, that'd be getting a bit desperate. Mate.
- 11:23Speaker 3: We better leave it there. Good to catch up with you,
- 11:25Speaker 3: no doubt I'll talk to you again soon.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Look forward to it.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Katie, thank you, thanks for your time.
- 11:30Speaker 1: That is the COLP president there, Jamie de Brenny. Now
- 11:34Speaker 1: that number if you do want to send us a
- 11:35Speaker 1: message zero four, double nine seven, double one three six zero.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Will take a very short break. When we come back,
- 11:42Speaker 1: we're going to be catching up with Craig Garaway from
- 11:43Speaker 1: Saint John's
